Feature: See No Evil Bristol invites you to See No Evil This summer, Bristol will play host to the most diverse art project to take place in the UK, with live projections, art installations and some of the biggest names in street art descending on the city from 13th- 19th August. The week-long event is part of the London 2012 Festival, a summer-long arts festival throughout the country to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Curated artists will paint Nelson Street, to reinvent a selection of urban spaces, with some jaw-dropping images expected to be added to the Bristol street. The event will be accompanied by Hear No Evil, organised by Team Love and featuring a series of music events throughout the week and a FREE New York style Block Party on Saturday 18th August on Nelson Street, with the main road remaining closed to vehicles on Sunday 19th August for further public viewing. A visual spectacular will open the weekend’s music on Friday 17th August: Joanie Lemercier of world-renowned projection experts AntiVJ and Adrian Utley of Portishead have been commissioned to collaborate on an immersive performance in the Passenger Shed in Temple Meads. This FREE ticketed performance, which is curated by Watershed, will also feature a film programme, supporting special guests and a host of performers including Will Gregory of Goldfrapp. The best of Bristol’s music culture will set the backdrop to live street painting and outdoor stages on Saturday, while buskers will be chosen to take up a number of pitches throughout the festival site and lead the street party on Sunday 19th August, while artists put the final touches to their creations. 30 of the world’s most prolific street artists will paint the streets, including abstract artist Lyken, Nick Walker and Connor Harrington. The artists are being curated by Bristol bred graffiti legend Inkie, who inspired the event’s first outing last year. Mike Bennett, organiser of See No Evil explains: “See No Evil is a unique event, designed to showcase the emerging and established talent in the world of urban art and music, to develop the innovative footprint in Bristol’s creative quarter. The pieces created over the week will create a legacy from the project and a destination for urban art fans from all over the world. There are going to be some massive names from the world of graffiti involved this year, we’re really excited to welcome them.”

Feature: See No Evil Artist Line Up The official line up has been unveiled for See No Evil, 13-19th August 2012 with some of the biggest names in the global urban art scene involved in the most diverse and exciting project to take place in the UK. The See No Evil art curation team, curated by Inkie has carefully selected 30 of the top street artists in the world to descend on Bristol’s Nelson Street and paint giant pieces of art onto multi-story buildings, leaving a stunning outdoor gallery for the people of Bristol and visitors to the city to enjoy. New York based legendary Mark Bode, son of the inventor the original graffiti cartoon character, Cheech Wiz, he has work displayed in galleries across the globe and will be joined by the likes of M City, who creates stunning black and while post industrial stencils. Abstract artist Lyken who creates captivating geometric cosmic paintings is also confirmed at the event, as will home grown talent Nick Walker. Hear No Evil, a series of free music events across the week, organised by Team Love will see the city’s best DJ’s, promoters and undiscovered artists perform over three nights from 16th to 19th August 2012 in the historic Westgate building and at an incredible Block Party on Nelson Street itself on Saturday daytime. Feature: See No Evil launches Hear No Evil See No Evil, the ambitious urban art project that will take over Bristol’s Nelson Street in August has announced a diverse music line up of the best DJ’s, promoters and undiscovered artists. They will perform over three nights from 16th to 18th August 2012 in the historic Westgate building and at an incredible Block Party on Nelson Street itself on Saturday. Block Party – 18th August 2012, Nelson Street Team Love, the event’s producers have lined up a phenomenal set of acts for this year’s Block Party, extending the site to include three new stages. The music selection will include everything from hip hop, soul and funk to house, disco and reggae – all for FREE while the world’s best street artists put the finishing touches to their creations on Nelson Street. The stage on Fairfax Street, opens with a disco extravaganza from Crazy P Soundsystem, The Boogie Cartel, Brassroots and Jus Now. It wouldn’t be a line up without Bristol’s DJ Derek, playing his own brand of reggae and funk. Other stages include ‘Speak No Evil’, ‘Hear No Evil’, ‘Dub No Evil’, Shambarber and the Love Truck. Local heroes Weapon of Choice will host live graff battles, while Shambarber’s own stage will feature all sorts of exciting new additions for tache and quiffs. BooDior and Glittermasque will be servicing all visitors dressing up needs, and no Block Party would be complete without its own B-Boy convention. The Block Party will take place between 12pm – 9pm on Saturday 18th. Westgate Building, 16th -19th August Team Love has secured the ultimate location for celebrations of Bristol’s music scene. The historic Westgate Building on Nelson Street will open its doors for three nights from Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th August and will feature legendary talent not to be missed. Thursday 16th August 2012 – Resident Advisor – A taste of Bristol Resident Advisor, the world’s leading underground dance music platform, has what looks set to be another stellar showcase of acts. From the cutting edge sounds of the Young Echo Collective who have recently been hailed as the future of what was once known as dubstep – to the main room power of local boy done good Dan Pearce aka Eats Everything who has shot to fame in the last 12 months with a string of heavyweight singles that have lit up the globe with support from everyone from Pete Tong to Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones. Livity Sound – Bristol legend Peverelist’s brand new imprint brings its live show to the event with the super group of Peverelist, Kowton and Asusu – they will be playing one of their only gigs outside Fabric and Boiler Room Last up but by no means least Outboxx will be getting the crowds dancing with their sophisticated take on house music.

Feature: See No Evil launches Long Playa ‘Long Playa’ Cardboard Catalyst Converges on Bristol’s ‘See No Evil’ Festival Bristol’s prestigious Westgate House is the latest venue addition to the See No Evil Bloc Party. On Saturday 18th August – Long Playa – hosted by local creative design agency Epoch Design, will stage an impressive and creatively unique environment installation. With doors opening from midday the public are invited to come along and see this amazing display, beginning from a disused building to a mass of catalytic cardboard geometrics. Over 20 local artists will enter the arena to paint, print, carve and produce individual sectors, all-in-all completing a visual collective masterpiece. The participation of youth students from Bristol’s Knowle West Media Centre and Trinity Community will also be on hand contributing their auspicious eye and steady hand to display the next generation insight of blank space. All of this will be supported by a host of DJs throughout the event. Lewis Plummer, Head Concept Designer of SNE’s ‘Long Playa’, commented; “The artists will enter this cave-like concept and apply their keen eye and multitude of styles, in a haven of complex cardboard structures built around the pillars and walls. This epic canvas has been specifically created for the very best of the artistic talent in Bristol’s creative community where they will be able to apply their imagination and interpretation to the main ‘See No Evil’ 2012 event.” Time lapse video coverage of the ‘Long Playa’ internal art event day will be directed by Omni Productions, who return after documenting Nick Walker’s participation in the ground-breaking urban art Nelson Street takeover SNE 2011. Much of the commissioned artwork created during the day will be subsequently auctioned off to support Bristol based creative outreach projects, namely the Knowle West Media Centre in the South of the city and Trinity Community Arts in the North.
Feature: See No Evil launches Long Playa Epoch’s Head of Creative Services, Will Cleverly commented on how important it is for Bristol to showcase its creative talent; “The collaboration between Epoch, Omni Productions and Insight Media Print is a great example of what can be dreamt up when like-minded creative people come together and support projects such as ‘See No Evil’. We are really excited to be involved in such a huge project with the aim to help build Bristol’s profile. The installation highlights the potential for developing Bristol City as the number one creative and media hub outside of London, showcasing assets of creative vision and appreciation of freedom in art.” Artists will be putting down their pens, pencils and paint at 5:30pm to embrace the final multi-faceted canvas, which will partly remain in place during the final night of ‘Westgate’ frolics that evening. Feature: See No Evil Mails, Maps and Motion in Bristol – See No Evil 2012 Watershed’s visua¬¬¬l spectacular, ‘Mails, Maps and Motion’ starts See No Evil’s weekend programme in style. On the evening of Friday 17th August, Bristol’s iconic Passenger Shed will be transformed with a host of one-off commissions and collaborations which blend cutting edge music and film. Drawing on the extraordinary film archive of the General Post Office Film unit and the rich history of Bristol’s Enterprise Zone; Mails, Maps and Motion brings together a host of world-renowned musicians and artists in a stunning performance that will captivate its audience. Clare Reddington, Director of The Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed’s Creative Technology lab, talks in more detail about the event; “The performance on Friday night will feature a selection of films and a host of Watershed collaborators bought together for the first time. The evening will explore themes of industry, modernity, technology and communication, juxtaposing our industrial past with the technological present.” The finale of the evening will be a specially commissioned performance which explores the rich material heritage of Temple Meads one of Bristol’s most iconic buildings. This spectacular one-off brings together the visual innovation of Joanie Lemercier from world-renowned projection experts AntiVJ with the musical creativity of Adrian Utley from acclaimed band Portishead. From Brunel’s original sketches to the arrival of the 125, from the echo of the steam train to the building’s electric future, Adrian and Joanie will play with the city’s industrial history, offering an immersive aural and visual treat to leave you breathless. The performance will feature mapped projections, guitars, percussion and synths. Joanie and Adrian will be joined on stage by a host of performers, including Will Gregory of Goldfrapp. This years See No Evil promises to be even better than last year. This is a friendly and inclusive event which is quite simply a great testiment to how Bristol’s creativity and innovation brings people together from all walks of life in a celebration of our cities greatness. First Impressions Exhibition Runs: 16th Aug - 9th Sep 2012 www.viewgallery.co.uk First Impressions is an exciting new venture that aims to discover young local artistic talent and provide a unique platform for exhibiting their work. Over the past few months we has been receiving entries from schools, colleges and universities in the local area. With submissions ranging from a class of ten year-olds to mature students embarking on their artistic career, the exhibition promises to showcase the full range of the most promising emerging talent in the South West. This exhibition will give students an opportunity to have their work displayed in a commercial gallery and provide them a taste of what it’s like to be a professional artist. The process includes the submission, the acceptance/rejection, and (for some) the exhibiting and maybe even the sale. Furthermore, one lucky student, who most impresses our judging panel, will be awarded a prize which will guarantee a commercial exhibiting opportunity at View within the next 12 months.

Organisers of Manchester Pride, have announced that G-A-Y will be bringing pop royalty Steps to the Big Weekend festival, headlining the Gaydar Main Arena. Fresh from their reunion and Ultimate Tour, Claire, ‘H’, Faye, Lee and Lisa will be wowing a packed arena at the UK’s leading Pride event. Formed in 1997, Steps were the Pop Sensation of the Millennium. In total the five-piece have sold 20 million records, and achieved 14 consecutive Top 5 singles. They have won countless awards and had sell out tour after sell out tour all over the globe. They were the second most successful British pop group ever (behind the Beatles). The group reformed in May 2011 for a four-part documentary series on Sky Living titled Steps: The Reunion. A second Greatest Hits album, The Ultimate Collection released in October last year became the band’s third UK number one album. Series 2 of the Steps Reunion titled “Steps: On the Road Again” aired in April 2012, following the band as they embarked on their sell-out 22-date UK tour. MANCHESTER PRIDE 2012 ANNOUNCES STAR DJ’S Bad boy actor and Attitude cover star Danny Dyer and chart-topping All Saints vocalist Mel Blatt to play live DJ sets during the Big Weekend as part of the Gaydar Radio Dance Day. Organisers are pleased to announce the addition of two celebrity DJ names to the Saturday night Gaydar Main Arena roster. Danny Dyer, one of Britain’s most popular and recognisable young actors, came to fame in 1999 following his breakthrough performance in the clubbingthemed film ‘Human Traffic’, but it was his role in ‘The Business’, and his white shorts, which got everyone talking. Danny has since gone on to appear in numerous acclaimed productions, and recently finished filming ‘Run for Your Wife’, an adaptation of Ray Cooney’s classic English farce co-starring Denise Van Outen and Sarah Harding of Girls Aloud. Recently playing the cavernous BCM Dance Planet nightclub in Mallorca, dance music publication Mixmag named the actor as their favourite celebrity DJ. Mel Blatt was one quarter of platinum-selling girl group All Saints, who dominated the pop charts in the late-90’s/early-00’s with their number one singles ‘Never Ever’, ‘Under the Bridge’, ‘Pure Shores’ (the second biggest selling single of 2000), and ‘Black Coffee’. Mel achieved independent success on collaborations with UK garage act Artful Dodger and Outsidaz, a hip-hop group from New Jersey; however her debut solo album was shelved in favour of a brief All Saints reunion in 2006. Recently singing vocals on ‘E-Funk’, dance act Soul Clap’s debut artist album, Mel’s DJ set betrays a depth of musical knowledge and impeccable taste. Danny and Mel are joined on the bill by emerging pop/dance artist Hatty Keane. Salford-born Hatty will be performing her new single, ‘No One Loves You’, as well as several other tracks from her upcoming debut album. Just 17 years-old, Hatty has already toured with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Pixie Lott, Pitbull, and Tinchy Stryder. No father, no food and an unknown future This is a guest article by my friend and colleague David Heap who is currently based in Tulkarm. It was originally published on the EAPPI website. For the Abu Ihab family, Friday wasn’t too bad. Admittedly there were Israeli soldiers on their roof firing tear gas, they couldn’t leave the house, the sons had been chased down the stairs by armed soldiers and the stink of tear gas and burning car tyres drifted through the room. But Isra’a, the youngest daughter, said they weren’t really afraid today. Kafr Qaddum is a pleasant Palestinian hillside village of some four thousand people. It has a mayor, a mosque, an elementary school. It had a road joining it to the next village one and a half kilometres away – but not anymore. Between the two villages are two Israeli settlements, legal under Israeli law, but illegal according to UN Resolutions, which expressly forbid the civilian settlement of lands occupied as a result of conflict. The road was closed for security reasons by the Israeli authorities in 2003. The only security problems the townspeople were aware of were some damage to their crops and olive trees in the early days of the settlement, but all had been peaceful for a good while. Israeli authorities had reportedly promised to re-open the road at the same time as the main road beyond it to Nablus re-opened. This happened two years ago, but their road remained closed. Since the first of July 2011 the people of Kafr Qaddum have held a demonstration every Friday against the closure, which means a 20 kilometre detour to get to families and friends and a six-fold increase in bus fares for students. It can get very angry, as it had on the 15th of June this year, because the Israeli army had raided the village in the middle of the night before and detained 20 young men. They can be held in administrative detention inside Israel, many kilometres away from their families for hours, days, weeks, months or years, often without trial. If they admit to the claims against them (often stone-throwing) they can be released upon payment of a fine that is around 10,000 shekels (€2000.) A Palestinian going to work in Israel as a labourer or farmhand earns 120-180 shekels per day. That Friday, it was a game of kids advancing and throwing stones, soldiers dashing forward threateningly with the guns, kids running back, soldiers withdrawing, kids advancing again went on till the main adult procession came up the hill. Tyres had been set alight and were now billowing smoke. The same pattern of ebb and flow was repeated, only now tear gas was being lobbed regularly. Mostly into a field to the side of the demo, but some skittering along the road into the crowd. Men were regularly brought back choking and temporarily blinded and a
Politics: Commentary Red Crescent ambulance zoomed up and down giving aid to the worst affected. One man was hurt more seriously as it seemed his shirt had caught fire and he was burned. Things quietened down after an hour or so and the procession came back chanting slogans. A quiet enough day we were told. Unlike the previous week there had been no chemically-created “Skunk� water shot from water cannons and no sound bombs, which disorientate and nauseate as well as deafen. Back in the Abu Ihab house, which is at the outer limit of the village and always caught up in the midst of things, things were now quite calm. The soldiers had left the roof and for once had not cut the television cable. The mother was preparing a huge and delicious meal of chicken, rice, vegetables, pickles, pitta bread, tea and coffee.
Politics: Stonewall Homophobic bullying ‘a daily nightmare’ for over half of Britain’s gay school pupils Pioneering research reveals serious concerns about homophobic language Nearly a quarter of gay young people attempt suicide New research carried out by the University of Cambridge forStonewall’s School Report 2012 has found that 55 per cent of lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils in Britain’s secondary schools experience homophobic bullying. The research, based on a national survey of 1,614 young people, also found that nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of gay young people have attempted to take their own life, and more than half (56 per cent) deliberately harm themselves. The School Report 2012 reveals that 99 per cent of gay young people hear homophobic language – like ‘that’s so gay’ and ‘you’re so gay’. However, a quarter of gay young people – rising to over a third in faith schools – report that teachers never challenge homophobic language. In schools where teaching staff never challenge homophobic remarks, the rate of homophobic bullying is far higher than in schools where such language is always challenged (71 per cent compared to 43 per cent). Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill said: ‘It’s unacceptable that over half of gay young people face a daily nightmare of homophobic bullying, and deeply worrying that many schools and teachers still fail to challenge it effectively. Thankfully Stonewall’s years of work with thousands of schools and local authorities has reduced the overall level of homophobic bullying significantly. But we won’t rest until every single gay young person in this country can walk through their school gates every morning without fear of being bullied just because of the way they were born.’ Schools Minister Nick Gibb said: ‘Homophobic bullying, of any kind and of any child, is completely unacceptable. No child should have to suffer fear, victimisation or disruption as a result of bullying, either on or off school premises. Tackling poor behaviour and bullying are top priorities for the Coalition Government. Working with Stonewall and other groups, we are supporting schools to take a zero tolerance approach to all forms of bullying. We are also clear that homophobic language should become as unacceptable as racial slurs.’ Shadow Education Secretary StephenTwigg, speaking at Stonewall’s Education for All Conference in London today, paid tribute to Stonewall for making a ‘vital contribution’ to discussions about homophobic bullying. ‘Every school and college must be a safe environment for everyone learning and working there,’ he said. ‘Stonewall’sSchool Report sets out challenges for schools, the Department for Education and Ofsted. It also makes recommendations for local authorities and academy chains - it’s vital that these are adopted.’ Today’s report updatesStonewall’s 2007 School Report, which found that nearly two thirds of young people were beinghomophobically bullied. The Bristol Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Forum (LGBT Bristol) is looking for new Management Committee members. We are looking for people with a passion for and committment to LGBT rights, willing to put their skills, creativity, intelligence, flair and confidence to work. Help us continue to challenge homophobia and make Bristol a City that welcomes LGBT people. You would be working with other Management Committtee members and staff to serve our Membership and LGBT communities in the City. In the 18 years since the Forum came into existence, and 8 years after it became an independent Charity, there is still much left to do to consolidate the rights of LGBT people. The local PCT, Constabulary, Fire Service and other major service providers regularly consult us on a wide range of issues and our influence gives a voice to LGBT people within both, the Equalities Team and other departments of Bristol City Council. One of the major outcomes of our work has been the Authority’s rapid advancement in the Stonewall Workplace Equality List (41st) and, following three years’ lobbying by us and other LGBT groups, it has joined the Stonewall Education Champions Programme, following intense lobbying by the Forum on action against homophobic bullying in Bristol schools. Our current projects include developing anti-bullying policy and practice in primary education and promoting universal inclusion of trangender, as well as older and disabled LGBT people. We have funding for 20012/13 and will be submitting our bid for the following 3 years, in July, but we are committed to developing new strategies to help us remain financially viable in the changing landscape of Charity funding and at this difficult time of cuts and austerity. We are asking members of the LGBT community to join us and leave their legacy in our brilliant, vibrant City, and help put it on the map as an LGBT destination of international calibre.
