Blaze a trail this autumn

W

hen the beach houses come down at the end of August, sun worshipers lament the end of summer. Not me. My Pacific Northwest DNA welcomes autumn in Japan with open arms. It’s still warm enough to hit the beaches which are less crowded in and out of the water, and the nighttime air is cool and crisp, especially if you head up to higher altitudes where the leaves start dramatically changing from green to gold.

After the late summer typhoons pass through, the weather is generally clear and stable, which makes it a great time for cycling tours, rock climbing and hiking.

Check out our Autumn Guide for some ideas (Page 66).

If you still need to get in a bit more sand and sun, Okinawa is always a great option (Page 48). You can grab your scuba gear and explore undersea ruins or even catch some waves (Page 52). If you want to go further abroad, another destination best-known for beaches and diving is Phuket; yet here too, especially during the monsoon season, you’ll find some surprisingly decent surf (Page 56).

It’s also an excellent time to explore new places you’ve had on your wish list, such as the Fuji Five Lakes area in Yamanashi (Page 20). Colorful hillsides and gorges await, with epic mountain treks such as the Shinetsu Trail (Page 36), and old post towns steeped with history on the Nakasendo Trail (Page 28).

A

few years ago a woman called the Outdoor Japan office asking to drop by to talk about an adventure race going on in South America. I was expecting someone from Latin America, but in walked a tall, energetic German, Ann Meidinger. I also vividly remember the photos and video she showed us from the Patagonian Expedition Race (PER), because they were absolutely stunning.

Although adventure racing had been slowly growing in popularity in Japan, there simply wasn’t anything in Japan on par, or on scale, because there simply is very little terrain in Japan that can match what racers experience in Chilean Patagonia. The skill level of adventure racing teams in Japan consequently wasn’t well suited for expedition races because it is impossible to organize races such as this in Japan where teams can train.

However there was one team that had been competing internationally for years. Masato Tanaka formed Team East Wind in 1996, and over the years members have included well known Japanese trail runners Minehiro Yokoyama and Hiroki Ishikawa, among others.

Since then the professional adventure racing team has competed in international events such as Eco Challenge, Raid Gauloises, Southern Traverse, Mild Seven Outdoor Quest, Primal Quest, X-Adventure and the World Championships.

East Wind also organizes the Adventure Racing Japan

Series (ARJS), which consists of three-to-four one-day adventure races as well as the SALOMON X-Adventure, a two-to-three-day race held once a year. They hope teams will use these races as stepping stones for entering bigger races outside Japan.

In 2010 East Wind joined the Patagonia Expedition Race. None of the members had ever been to Chile, but team captain Tanaka, a veteran of many international races, recognized going in that “the way of thinking of the people there and the race organizers would be quite different from what we Japanese racers are used to, and we have to be prepared for that.”

The Chilean Patagonia landscape is as beautiful as the climate is harsh. It can be extremely cold, windy and inhospitable for humans, despite the modern gear teams carry. This is pristine terrain, some of which was being explored for the first time by the race director, Stjepan Pavicic, as he set the course.

On top of the daunting challenges the team faced from the elements, none of the East Wind team spoke English, so there were bound to be some communications problems to overcome. Nonetheless the team was impressed by the organizers, Nómadas Outdoor Services, who were able to offer this truly wild and adventurous race at, what feels like, the end of the world.

itself, and East Wind battled through, becoming the first Japanese team to finish the race, coming in seventh place.

In November 2010, Kay Waki joined East Wind as a “trainee.” Three months later, she found herself on the way to Chile with the East Wind team to take another crack at PER. “It was my first expedition race, so I wasn’t so sure what to expect, but I knew it would be the hardest thing I had ever done in my life,” she admits.

During the race she had to dig down deep to deal with the pain and suffering adventure racers endure. She had huge blisters on her feet, a broken rib, was sleeping just one or two hours each day and had to keep moving when she was awake. The forest was so thick in places, they inched along. Other times they tramped through turba (swamp), bushwhacked their way through undergrowth, crossed icecold rivers and endured seemingly endless storms.

“It was so hard and painful, I cried a lot, but sucked it up. I pushed myself as far as I could because I wasn’t alone; my teammates helped me get through it, and I really grew to trust them,” she says.

The trust and teamwork that are such an integral part of adventure racing tested Kay and East Wind on Day 6, when she faced serious risk to her health if she kept going with a broken rib. The team had to make a decision to either drop out of the race (all team members must finish the race together or be disqualified) or take a calculated risk and continue.

“We were all scared,” she recalls, “but adventure racing is about getting over difficulties by working as a team. We discussed it and decided to accept the challenge and keep going. When we finally crossed the finish line, all the pain and suffering was worth it, and I was so glad we didn’t drop out. Sharing the joyful moment with my teammates after going through everything together was amazing. I would do the whole race again just to experience that feeling again.”

In 2011 East Wind finished fifth. “Part of our improvement was attributed to having a new female member of the team who speaks English,” says Tanaka.

And evidently, Kay wasn’t joking, as she plans to head back to Chile with the team and see if they can use their experience to improve on their results at PER 2012, the 10th anniversary of the race. ✤

Don’ t forget to open the door?!! ドアを開けておくのを忘れずに！ ！ There are a lot of things to worry about during an adventure t usually come to race, but suffocating in your sleep doesn’ mind. However, East Wind members were about to do just that one night while they were getting some needed rest in their tent. The tent is made of a material that completely shuts out air when it is wet, so they left the door open a little when sleeping because it was raining a lot.

Luckily, another member woke up later, because he literally found everyone being suffocated, as there was no air in s lives. the tent. He opened the door and possibly saved everyone’

It’ s not uncommon for PER racers to pronounce their love for Patagonia after the race, but American Gearjunkie.com teammates Chelsey Gribbon and Jason Magness took it a step further by getting engaged at the closing ceremony.

There was nothing to laugh about when Team East Wind’ s Kay Waki broke her rib on the first day of the race. It created a functional disturbance, making it difficult for her to breathe, and easy to lapse into dyspnea. On top of that, she got hypothermia while repeatedly swimming in an icy river with cold, stormy weather. Sounds like fun, eh! レース初日、 イースト・ウインドの紅一点であるケイが胸骨を骨 折した。息を吸うだけでも痛みがひどく、呼吸困難に陥りやす い状態だった。更に、氷点下の川に浸り強風にさらされたこと で、低体温症に陥ってしまったのだ。 まさに不屈の精神の持ち 主である。

アドベンチャー・レースでは心配の種は山ほどあるが、仮眠中の 窒息事故とは思いもしないだろう。イースト・ウインドのメンバー たちはテントを張って、大切な睡眠をとることにした。テントは雨 の際には完全に空気を遮断できる素材で作られていて、 どしゃ ぶりの夜だったので、 テントの入り口を少しだけ開けて眠りにつ いた。夜中にトイレに行きたくなってテントを這いだしたメンバー が、戻ってきた時にうっかりテントの入口を閉めてしまった。幸運 にも他のメンバーのひとりが、皆が息苦しそうにしているのに気 が付いてあわてて空気を入れた。思わぬところで命の恩人とな ったわけだ。

Fourteen global teams from 13 nations pushed themselves to the limit to take on the 2011 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race. Six teams finished.

The race covers 617 challenging kilometers of terrain with teams racing up to 10 days.

Each four-person team must navigate the course on foot, bike or kayak using just a map and compass to guide them while facing whatever nature throws at them. If any member cannot finish the race, the entire team is disqualified.

The winning team, AdidasTERREX/Prunesco, from the UK, finished in five days, 12 hours and 36 minutes.

Team East Wind finished fifth in seven days and 58 minutes.

B en Brown had been hearing about the rivers of Hokkaido ever since he and Pat O’Keeffe did some expedition paddling in Thailand years ago. The Red Bull and Teva-sponsored kayaker had wanted to get to Japan to see for himself but the stars had not been aligned.

his time, however, when he picked up the phone and heard Pat’s voice on the other end asking him to come over for the HOA & Pyranha Extreme Whitewater Challenge and some “creeking Japanese-style,” the timing was right, and the next thing he knew he was grabbing his gear at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport and looking for his ride.

Sure enough, Pat pulled up and it wasn’t long before the pair arrived at the base of Hokkaido Outdoor Adventures in the central Hidaka Mountains just in time for a BBQ with staff and fellow paddlers, with plenty of food, beers and sake to shake the jet lag.

The next morning they were up early to hit some local rivers near the HOA base, starting with a great “play boat” run on the Saru River where the HOA Extreme Whitewater event would be held. With Pat’s local knowledge of the river and Ben’s input, they put together a fun slalom course that would challenge paddlers at the event.

Next on the agenda was to fix the “feature” for the rodeo kayak event. The Hidaka yakuba (town hall) supplied a crane and a driver, and they set out to construct a play

feature but, due to high water, after some thought they decided to run a natural feature higher up on the river.

This would test the local paddlers; it was big hole and a big wave which would make for some nervous boaters on the day.

Once the HOA Extreme Whitewater events began, Ben showed the local boys how to paddle the slalom course, besting the next fastest competitor by more than 30 seconds. He also raised the level on the downhill race, winning by 700 meters over the four-kilometer race and showing other aspiring boaters you have to train hard to be on top of your game.

That night the white water enthusiasts were treated to the latest Extreme Kayak movies, by Steve Fisher and Rush Sturgess, which Ben not only helped film but also starred in. It’s not every day you get to paddle and hang out with one of your sport's top athletes.

With the event finished, it was time to explore some of the creeks and waterfalls Pat had paddled or at least checked out. They started with some local Hidaka runs, paddling some great Grade 3 and 4 sections of some low

volume creeks. Ben was impressed by the quality of the water and several 25-to-30-foot drops that were available.

Moving even further into central Hokkaido, Pat had an eye on a couple of first descents he wanted to hit with Ben while he was here. They checked out the water levels of one 70-foot waterfall, but it needed more water to make it possible. So they set their sights on a 55-foot waterfall upstream in a creek section on which Pat had his eyes for a few years.

At first glance, it looked like a go. But, on a closer inspection, the top revealed an almost river-wide hole just before the lip of the fall that would give you a hell of a beating before letting you go, making it an almost impossible waterfall to run. After some time discussing several lines, Ben said he would fire it up.

There was a very fine line down the left that was just a kayak wide with just enough water going over to make the impact at the bottom “not so bad.” With rain falling, the water levels came up a bit, making it a little better. Ben cut out of the eddy and slotted the line perfectly, although it was a bigger impact at the bottom than expected,

ripping the camera from the front of his kayak and giving him a hard body slam on landing. Yet Ben was stoked to have made this first descent and left his mark on Japan.

The next mission was a creek near Furano. The weather was great, so Ben and local paddlers Ryu and Kazato put their kayaks on their backs and followed Pat for a 30-minute hike up the trail. Upon reaching the putin, Pat told Ben there were two waterfalls above that had been run once before by Pat Keller seven years earlier, so they decided to go check them out.

After running the top 20-foot waterfall, Ben wanted to check out the 35-foot waterfall below. It looked sweet, but after checking the bottom, they found it was too shallow. He was bummed, but put-in just below and paddled down to where the other guys left their kayaks.

The run was a good Grade 3-4 creek Pat had paddled several times before. They pulled up before the first 25foot waterfall in this section to get out and inspect it. It looked good, so Ben ran it first, followed by Pat, then Ryu and Kazato. A little bit further down, things had changed a bit after some high water had passed through earlier

in the season, leaving a few trees and moving some rocks around, making for some unavoidable portages.

Further down into the canyon, the water levels had raised a lot, making for a couple of nervous paddlers.

Looking downstream, Pat showed Ben what to expect, and the high water made it intimidating; not to mention there was a 20-foot slot drop with a big Grade-4 move to be done above it. The boys decided it was probably above their level. So, the group made the smart decision and finished there, trekking back, loading the car with kayaks, and they headed for Furano’s finest curry at Yuigadokuson.

After two weeks in Hokkaido, it was time for Ben to catch his flight to New Zealand before heading back to California. He had enjoyed the event, the rivers and meeting fellow enthusiasts here in Japan. He scoped out some creeks for which he’s keen to return, some waterfalls to film and some creeks to paddle that have yet to be run. ✤

he first time I heard the name “Fuji-san,” I thought the locals respected the mountain so much they referred to it with an honorific title.

San, however, is the Chinese reading of yama or “mountain.”

There are a few theories as to the origin of the name with some believing the original name to be Fuji-yama, which means “second to none in size,” or Fujin-yama, “mountain surpassing all others.”

Another popular theory is the name came from the Ainu (original inhabitants of Japan) word funchi, meaning “god-of-fire.”

Every year, Mt. Fuji attracts more than 200,000 climbers, with 30 percent of them being foreigners.

Climbing the mountain usually begins at the Fifth Station, of which there are four, the most popular being the Kawaguchi-ko Station, at 2,300 meters, also the highest. From here it is just a five-to-eighthour hike to the top.

The official climbing season runs from July through the end of August. The station hosts a number of shops and eateries as well as a shrine to protect trekkers. Take the time to tuck into a Fujisized plate of curry rice or a Fuji-shaped melon pan (bun) on offer…delicious.

Synonymous with the mountain is Fuji Goko, or the “Fuji 5 Lakes,” each offering its own perspective from which to enjoy the view.

The largest is Yamanaka-ko. Here, there are plenty of places to pitch a tent, eat a good meal or enjoy a resort-style vacation. You can enjoy water sports and fishing activities as well as the many vantage points from which to see Mt. Fuji.

Kawaguchi-ko, a 30-minute drive from Yamanakako, is the area’s central hub. The shore of the lake hosts numerous eateries and attractions, and it is the center of the area’s sport fishing. With easy access from Tokyo, and to the mountain, here is where many begin their close encounter with Mt. Fuji. It is also home to Fuji-Q Highland Park. The theme park hosts some of the fastest rides in Japan and offers some interesting views of the mountain.

Kawaguchi-ko is great place to try the local delicacy, hōtō. It’s a miso-based dish made of thick, wide noodles, veggies galore and sometimes game meat such as boar or pheasant. I can vouch for the pheasant version which I enjoyed at the Kijizuku restaurant in town.

Between the two lakes lies the small village of Oshino. It is a national treasure famous for the pure water that flows out of the eight springs. The springs are fed by the melting snow from atop the mountain.

After an 80-year journey through rock and pumice, the water emerges in the village where it is noted for its purity and high mineral count.

Sai-ko sits about 15 minutes (by car) west of Kawaguchi-ko. One of the smaller lakes, it is famous for the pleasant campgrounds as well as easy access to nearby caves popular to explore. Here you’ll find caves with icicles, wind caves noted for the year-round warm temperatures, some home to

large colonies of bats.

Aokigahara Jukai, or the “sea of forest,” lies between this lake and the foot of Mt. Fuji. The forest itself has a morbid history, due to the number of suicides, second only to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Venturing into the forest, your unease may be heightened as your compass goes haywire if it responds at all.

Traveling farther west, we find ourselves on the shore of cheerful Shoji-ko, the baby of the Fuji Five Lakes family. It is noted for its upside-down view of Mt Fuji reflected in the still water.

The last of the five lakes is Motosu-ko. It is the deepest of the lakes with a depth of 138 meters.

The lake’s main claim to fame is the fact it adorns Japan’s ¥1,000 note, yet is it also well-known by windsurfers. All five lakes are in Yamanashi Prefecture and can be found along Rt. 139 from the west or 138 from the east.

Shirai-no-taki is a great place to soak up some negative ions. 素晴らしい白糸の滝ではマイナスイオンをたっぷり浴びながら、 その美しさに誰もが癒されることだろう。

めて『フジサン』の名前を聞いた時は、地元民の 崇拝の証として、富士の山を “さん”付けで丁寧に

呼んでいるのかと思ったものだ。しかし実のところ、富士 山の名前の起源には諸説あるようなのだ。 まずは『不二山』。この山が “他に比べようがない唯一 無二の高峰“であるという意味を持つ。次に『不尽山』だ が、その大きさを “尽きる事なき山” であると表現したと考え られている。他にもアイヌ語で火を意味する『フンチヌプ リ』を起源だとする説もあると言い、どれも説得力がある言 い伝えである。 毎年、実に20万人以上の登山客が富士山を訪れ、そ のうちの3割は外国人。ほとんどの登山客は5合目から登 り始めるが、富士山に4か所ある5合目登山口の中でも、

2,300メートルと最も標高の高い河口湖口が人気となって いる。ここから山頂までは5 ～ 8時間ほどの道のりを登っ て行くことになる。 一般的な富士登山のシーズンは、7月の山開きから8月 末までと短い。頂上へ行く途中には売店や食堂も沢山あ り、登山客の安全を祈願する神社も建っている。富士サ イズの山盛りカレーライスや、富士山にならったメロンパン でエネルギーをしっかり充電しよう。味の方もお墨付きだ。 富士山と言えば、忘れてはならないのが富士五湖の存 在である。それぞれの湖には違った趣があり、水面ごしに 眺める富士山もひとつひとつ全く違った顔を見せてくれる。 ひときわ大きい山中湖にはキャンプ場が多く、美味しい レストランや別荘感覚のコテージもある。ウォータースポー ツや魚釣りなどアクティビティが満載で、絶好の富士山 撮影スポットも選び放題だ。 山中湖から30分ほどドライブすると、次にお目見えする のは河口湖だ。町の中心地にあり、湖畔には沢山のレス トランやショップが立ち並ぶ。河口湖はスポーツ・フィッ シングの拠点としても人気の湖。東京からのアクセスも良 く、富士山と最初のご対面を果たすには持ってこいの場 所であり、富士急ハイランドも同エリアにある。日本最速 のジェットコースターからのぞむユニークな富士山の眺めを 楽しみたいものだ。 さらに、せっかくここまで来たのなら、ほうとうは必ず味 わっておきたい。ざっくりと切った太麺を、たっぷりの野菜 と共に味噌仕立ての汁で煮込んだ名物郷土料理だ。お 店によっては猪肉やキジ肉が入っている場合もある。郷 土料理屋のきじ亭で注文したキジほうとう鍋は、まさに絶 品だった。 山中湖と河口湖の間には、国の天然記念物でもある 忍野八海で有名な忍野村がある。富士山の雪解け水が

80年もの歳月をかけて濾過され、8つの美しい泉に湧き出 ている。この水は、清らかでミネラルたっぷりの “忍野の名 水” として知られている。 河口湖から西へ車で15分ほど行ったところにあるのが 西湖だ。小さな湖ではあるが、設備の整ったキャンプ場が 多々あり、溶岩洞窟への探検の拠点に便利である。氷 柱や風穴を見られる洞窟や、コウモリが生息する一年中 暖かい洞窟など、見どころが満載だ。 西湖と富士の麓の間には、ゴールデン・ゲートブリッジ に続く自殺者の多さを誇る、悪名高き青木ヶ原樹海が広 がっている。森の中に進んでいくにつれて機能を失うコン パスが、よぎる不安に拍車をかける。 さらに西に車を走らせると雰囲気は一変、のどかな精 進湖のほとりに出る。富士五湖の中では最も小さなこの 赤ちゃん湖は、穏やかな湖面に映る逆さ富士でよく知られ ている。 最後のひとつは本栖湖。最大水深は富士五湖で最も

Continuing west, we say goodbye to Yamanashi and hello to Shizuoka Prefecture, as we make our way onto the Asagiri Kogen or Asagiri (Morning Fog) Plateau. From here, forests and wild lands give way to pastures, and the scene becomes rural. The plateau affords many uninterrupted views of the great cone.

The Asagiri Road Station is also a great place to savor local dairy and meat goodies. Music lovers come to the area each autumn for the Asagiri Jam, a more intimate event from the organizers of the Fuji Rock Festival, which attracts some big names.

There are some spectacular distractions here such as Jinba-no-taki, a six-meter waterfall that sits off the main road in the village of Inakoshira. Despite its charm, it isn’t featured in many travel rags yet, and it can be quite difficult to find. It is best to ask locals who should be able to point you in the right direction. Not only is it a stunning little waterfall, but also the water tastes delicious.

The pièce de résistance of a sojourn around Fuji is Tanuki-ko. The small man-made lake, used to drain surrounding rice fields, is considered by many as the best place from which to view Mt Fuji. Photographers flock to the area, particularly around April and late August, hoping to immortalize Fuji Diamond, when the sun rises directly over the mountain. Depending on the weather, the sunrise from here is stunning in any season.

Tanuki-ko hosts the government-run hotel Kyukamura Fuji. There are 36 similar establishments across the country that make up the National Park Resort Villages of Japan. As the name suggests, they are all found in and around national parks, and they offer a little bit of luxury at very reasonable prices.

Kyukamura Fuji is the most popular, and it can be booked solid all year ’round, so you need to reserve a room well ahead of time. The rate includes a room with a panoramic view of Fuji as well as a buffet style dinner and breakfast featuring local cuisine.

There is a magnificent onsen bath (indoor) from which to watch the sunrise over Fuji. The hotel is a hop, step, jump away from the lake and the surrounding park. Camping is also available. Another treat to the south is the Shirai-no-taki, or the “falls of white thread.” It is one of the area’s prettiest attractions and a great place to soak up some minus ions.

Temperatures range from mild, during the day around the foot of Mt. Fuji, to really cold up at the Fifth Station. Evenings are chilly at this time of year (fall), so dress in layers. ✤

深い138メートル。千円札紙幣の裏面に描かれた富士山 として有名だが、実はウインドサーファーたちのメッカでも ある。富士五湖は全て山梨県内にあり、国道139号を東 から西へ向かって巡ることができる。 そのまま西方面へ車を走らせ、朝霧高原に向かうと山 梨県から静岡県に入っていく。周辺の景色は森林から牧 草地帯に姿を変え、広々とした草原から見える霊峰の姿 をゆっくりと堪能できる。 朝霧高原道の駅では、新鮮な乳製品や畜産品を味 わえる。毎年秋には、フジロックフェスティバルのオーガ ナイザーによる豪華な野外イベント、朝霧ジャムが行わ れ、会場の朝霧アリーナにはフェス好きが集結して賑や かになる。 この辺りには魅力的な寄り道スポットが沢山ある。その ひとつ陣馬の滝は、猪の頭地区にある落差6メートル程 の美しい滝だ。観光スポットとしてはまだそれほど有名で はなく、メイン道路から辿り着くのはなかなかの至難の業。 地元の人に道を聞きながら辿り着きたい。景観の美しさは もちろんのこと、水の味も実に素晴らしい。 富士宮市の誇るメインディッシュは、田貫湖である。 この小さな人造湖は、周辺の農業用水を蓄えるだけでな く、数ある富士山のビュースポットの中でも最高の眺めと 称される。ダイヤモンド富士が見られる4月頃と8月下旬に は、山頂と太陽が重なる神秘的なその姿を写真に収めよ うと沢山のカメラマンが押し寄せる。天気にさえ恵まれれ ば、もちろんどの季節でも素晴らしいご来光に出会うこと ができる。 田貫湖には、全国36カ所の国立・国定公園に建つ 休暇村のひとつ、休暇村富士がある。お手頃な値段で 贅沢気分が味わえる休暇村富士は、通年を通して大人 気なため、かなり余裕を持った予約をお勧めする。料金は 富士山を一望できる客室と、地元食材を使用したビュッ フェスタイルの朝食・夕食込み。富士山に輝く日の出を 眺めながらの温泉は最高だ。ホテルは湖のほとりに建っ ていて、周辺にはキャンプ場も充実している。 もう少し南下すると、大人気の観光地、白糸の滝があ る。マイナスイオンをたっぷり浴びながら、その美しさに誰 もが癒されることだろう。 富士山麓の気温は暖かい日でも5合目まで上がればかな り低下する。秋の夜は冷えるので、重ね着を忘れずに。✤

To Kyukamura and Tanuki-ko: From JR Fuji Station, take the Minobu Line to Fujinomiya Station. Take the bus bound for Kyukamura Fuji. About a 45-minute ride.

Get off at the last stop.

Buses also run from Kawaguchi-ko and Fujinomiya stations to Shiraito Falls, but you need to check locally for times.

For months I have relished the prospect of spending four uninterrupted days hiking from village to village, exploring one of Japan’s ancient kaidō (trails). Finally, I find myself on the trail, maps in hand, ready to explore the Nakasendō (中山道), which translates to “Middle Road” or “Central Mountain Route.”

During the Edo Period (16031868), it linked Kyoto to Edo (Tokyo), running through the modern-day prefectures of Saitama, Gunma, Nagano, Gifu and Shiga.

ようやく叶い、地図を手に中山道の探訪に出かけることにした。

he Nakasendō was one of the gokaido (five official routes) maintained by the Tokugawa Shogun. Daimyo (feudal lords) made regular journeys to Edo as part of the sankin kotai system of “alternate attendance,” in which they were forced to spend alternate years in Edo, keeping their families effectively there as hostages and diminishing any possibility of revolt.

The Nakasendō was sometimes called the “Himekaidō” (Princess Road), since princesses sent to Edo for marriage with the Shogun took this route, as it was safer and less liable to flooding than the other route connecting Kyoto and Edo, the Tōkaidō (East Sea Road), which follows the coast.

Another name for the trail was the Kisokaidō (木曾街道), and one of the best preserved sections of the Nakasendō is found in the beautiful Kiso Valley which connects Nagano and Nagoya. The juku (post-towns), overnight rest stops for samurai, traders and feudal lords, have been thoughtfully preserved here, with many village houses now functioning as minshuku (inns).

In the 1960s, when traditional buildings were in disrepair and other villages were knocking them down in favor of modern pre-fabricated homes (often with the encouragement of local authorities), the Kiso villagers decided instead to restore them.

being allowed to sell or alter them, have preserved part of a vanishing rural landscape.

On the first day of my journey I find myself standing in Magome, one of the 69 juku (stations) on the original Nakasendō. At the entrance to the village is a sharp turn called a masugata (square shape), a defensive measure often used in Japanese castles.

The long central cobblestone street runs between machiya, traditional wooden houses often referred to as “bed of eels,” as they are long and narrow. Some operate as shops or cafés, selling the local specialty, gohei-mochi, sticky pounded rice covered in a thick sauce made of miso, sesame and walnuts.

My first hike takes me over Magome Pass to Tsumago, the most popular section of the trail.

Leaving Magome, the path rises gently and is easy to follow. Half an hour out of the village, I stop by a small restaurant selling soba noodles and run by the wife of the village postman.

After reaching the pass, I descend on a dirt trail, reaching a small cha-ya (tea house), modeled after the cha-ya that would once have lined this and other kaido around Japan, offering rest to weary travelers.

Three hours into the hike I arrive in Tsumago and get my first opportunity to stay in one of

the machiya. The scene here is one of the most evocative of the Nakasendō post-towns. The view cannot be much different than during feudal times. Overhead wires and modern buildings are banished. Tourists do turn up in the middle of the day, but few stay overnight, and I feel wonderfully privileged. I take a walk before dinner as the village is almost deserted.

The Daikichi Minshuku sits at the far end of the kilometer-long village. Three generations of the Hara family run the inn which features five simple yet clean rooms and fresh, beautifully prepared food. The family grows many of the ingredients and forage in the surrounding hills for sansai (mountain vegetables).

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, I look through my walking itinerary for the day.

The weather looks good, so I opt for the longer of the two suggested routes to the next stop, KisoFukushima. With map in hand, and using the accompanying route notes, I hike one hour to the town of Nagiso, then head uphill. I walk by fields full of soba and rice. Locals tending their plots smile encouragement as I walk by.

The six-hour hike takes me to another low pass on a well-marked trail, then through the woods and down a paved road to Nojiri. Here I catch a local train for the 15-minute ride to Kiso-

SELF-GUIDED WALKING TOURS セルフ・ガイドのウォーキング

Fukushima, the largest town in the central Kiso Valley and the political center of the Kiso Region.

Travelers were required to stop here at the main

sekisho (checkpoint) in order to control smuggling and make sure families of the feudal lords did not abscond from Edo. My accommodation for the night is Komano-yu, a comfortable (hot spring) ryokan. After muscles are soothed in the bath and a stomach full with a six-course meal, I fall into a deep sleep in anticipation of my next hike.

The following day I start the next section, over the Torii Pass from Yabuhara to Narai-juku.

Yabuhara was known for its oroku-gushi (combs) made from local birch trees, manufactured here until the 1960s when plastic combs appeared.

After a brief but brisk climb, I reach the pass. To the left I can see Mt. Ontake, the second-highest volcano in Japan at 3,067 meters. I ring the bell by the trail to ward off bears, and start descending to Narai. Once known as the village of a thousand inns, it was the most prosperous of the Nakasendo post-towns.

The contrast with Yabuhara, whose residents

decided not to restore their traditional houses and impose strict rules on their ownership, is stark.

While Yabuhara is encumbered with modern pre-fab houses and the usual cobweb of cables, Narai, like Magome and Tsumago, has been able to elegantly preserve the past. Yet it manages not to fall into the trap of becoming a living museum or Disney-esque theme park. It is a working village, and its residents have lived here for generations.

My last night is spent at Iseya, where Masaki Sakaiya and his parents manage the inn with evident pride. The walls inside their 200-year-old machiya house have a deep burnished shine up to head height, a result of generations of young women in the family polishing the wooden walls coated with soot from the irori (sunken hearth).

My last hike, more of a gentle stroll, takes me from Narai to Hirasawa, a center of the lacquer ware trade. Dozens of shops sell bowls, hondana (bookshelves), tables and other wooden objects coated in layers of lacquer. You’ll be tempted to pick up some beautiful mementos, but if your budget won’t stretch very far, you can at least take home a pair of nice chopsticks. ✤

I am not one for group tours. I’m too independent, and perhaps stubborn, to travel with a guide and a bunch of other people. I like to do things at my own pace, to be able to stop and browse in shops and take as many photos as I want without feeling guilty about holding up the group.

Yet I find myself tramping through the Japanese countryside on a “guided tour” discovering one of the old kaidō. The great thing about self-guided tours is that, other than bringing the right gear and knowing how to get to the start of the trail, you don’t need to do any preparation.

The self-guided walking pack includes a hiking map, step-by-step trail guide, train tickets and pre-paid reservations at historic inns along the way. There is also a phone number to call in case of a problem, but other than that you are on your own; just you, the trail and the adventure.

The Nakasendō self-guided walking tour can be done as a 3, 4, 5 or 10-day trip. The best time to hike is from April to November.

There are many places in Japan where you can climb up to a mountain, stay in a hut or tent, then get up the next day and head off to climb another peak.

ut what has been largely missing is a place to do a real long-distance hike — trails where you can go off for multiple days, put quite a few kilometers under your boots, see animals, beautiful scenery and flowers, but not really do a lot of upand-down.

According to Ken-ichi Takano, back in 2000 Nagano Prefecture was looking for a project to link Nagano City and the Sea of Japan, which is not too far to the north. “One of the first ideas to come up was a walking course of some kind,” Takano says.

“Some national funds were available, and people were looking for some way to get local people involved as well.”

So, after three years of planning, preparation began for a course that would lead from Mt. Madarao in the south, along the Sekida mountain range to the north. Takano, who today manages Nabekura Kogen Mori no Ie, a combination nature center, lodge and home of the Shinetsu Trail Club NPO, says he started working here from the early days in 2003.

“We knew we would need an organization to maintain the trail, so we established the NPO right away,” he says. “The first stage was a 50-km. course, from Madarao to Maki Pass that opened in April 2005. By September 2008, it had been extended even further north to Mt. Amamizu.”

Staying high on the ridgeline, there isn’t a great deal of variation in elevation and, depending on the section, the trail provides excellent views of the Nagano mountains from Shiga to Nozawa Onsen, the Chikuma River to the east, and the Kubiki Alps, including Mt. Myoko to the west, and even across to the Sea of Japan to the north.

“The main idea was that we wanted to use existing roads and paths as much as possible, without cutting down trees,” Takano says. “The image was to have a narrow, single-track path.”

For that reason, he says, hikers are welcome to

do trail running on the trail, but it will not be used for racing. “Well, a small section is used for the 100K Shinetsu Five Mountain Trail Run,” he says with a smile, “but the rest is just too narrow for a race, and that’s the way we want to keep it.”

The Shinetsu Trail Club has developed some excellent information materials, detailed maps and a useful Web site (www.s-trail.net) that even includes an extensive English-language section, but experiencing part of the trail is, of course, the only way to feel the attraction.

After waiting for a break in August’s nearly endless rains, I gave up and decided to do a short portion of the southernmost of the six distinct sections, despite some occasionally heavy rain and fog.

Heading south from Route 292, one of the biggest roads crossing the trail, the path followed mountain and farm roads — all still pleasant and without any fellow hikers along the way — before heading into the woods along a narrow, well-marked and not overly worn path (this despite, Takano says, the 35,000 hikers annually during the main five-month season).

It was beautiful in the fog, with a rich variety of trees all around, the songs of countless birds, and a carpet of green that included sparkling red fruit, a variety of ichigo, somewhere between a raspberry and strawberry. The trail rose and rose, and I began imagining what it would be like to enjoy those berries — and then the bear came down from the tree.

I heard a human-size rustling, looked up, and down he came, claws raking the bark. I clapped my hands and hollered but didn’t hear him crashing off into the woods — so I thought it might be a good time to turn around.

“You were lucky,” Takano laughs. “There aren’t many bears along the trail except maybe in that section.” As much as I personally dislike bear bells,

りの距離を歩きながら、道の途中ではそこに暮らす動物を 観察したり、美しい景色や植物を楽しんだり。しかしアップ ダウンは全行程を通してもそれほど激しくない、というタイ プのハイクがあまりないのだ。 タカノ・ケンイチ氏によれば、2000年頃に長野県は、 長野市と日本海を結ぶプロジェクトに乗り出したという。日 本海は長野県の北、それほど遠くない距離にある。 「最初に出てきた案は、いわゆるウォーキング・コース のようなアイディアでした。国からの補助金もある程度は 出る予定でしたし、地元の人たちも、自分たちも何らかの 形で関われるようなものにできれば、と考えていたんです」 そして3年をかけて計画を練り、南の斑尾山から関田山 脈に沿って北へと向かうコース作りの準備が始められた。 現在は、ネイチャーセンター、ロッジ、NPOの信越トレイル クラブの本部でもある『なべくら高原森の家』のマネジャー を務めるタカノ氏は、2003年頃からここでの仕事をスタート したのだそうだ。 「このトレイルを管理維持するための何らかの組織が必 要だと考えていたので、すぐにNPOを作ったのです。第1ス テージは斑尾から牧峠までの50キロのコースで、2005年 の4月にオープンしました。2008年9月には、さらに北の天 水山まで延びました」 ほとんど尾根沿いの道のりであるため、どこでも標高の 変動は少なく、セクションによってはトレイル上から素晴ら しいビューを楽しめる。志賀から野沢温泉にかけては長野 の山々が楽しめるし、東には千曲川、西には妙高山を含 めた頸城アルプスが見える。さらに北の方向を見れば日 「できる限り既存の道路や道を使って、無意味に木々 を伐採しないことを心がけ、 それほど幅の広くないシングル・ トラックの道をイメージしていました」とタカノ氏。 そのため、ハイカーのトレイル・ランニングは歓迎するが、 基本的にレースには使用しないということになる。

周囲には様々な木々が生い茂り、 鳥の声が聞こえ、緑のカーペットの 中にイチゴの一種の赤いフルーツ がなっていて、そのすべてが霧の中 に浮かぶ光景はとても美しい。

JAPAN it might be a smart idea to attach one in the area, especially if there aren’t a lot of fellow hikers. Even so, he says, there has never been any incident along the trail.

There aren’t any figures, Takano says, on how many people have actually through-hiked the entire trail. “About 200 people have registered with us and received the official certificate of completion,” he says. “I’m sure a lot more people do the whole route, though.” The six sections are set up for each to be done in a day, although Takano adds that fast hikers will finish in four days.

“A typical hiker will do one section, then stay in a pension overnight,” he says. “Right now we have two tent camping sites in the northern sections, but we hope to have camping sites set up in all sections next year.” Camping along the course in other areas is officially not allowed, he says, although some people may be arranging with local landowners to camp for a night on their property.

For people with just a weekend to spare, Takano suggests the Madarao Kogen area. “There are a lot of courses there as well as the Shinetsu Trail,” he says. “You could do 50K there alone. There a lot of places to park a car, hike around and then come back. The view from the top of Madarao is also really beautiful.”

The alternative, he says, is sections 4 and 5, moving toward the northern half of the trail. “Along there you have really beautiful views of the Nagano mountains and the ocean,” he says. “There are also beautiful buna (beech) forests. Buna are very strong trees, so they can stand up to the heavy snows in the area.

“It’s unusual to find stands of only beech at these altitudes, so this is really a special area.” He does recommend caution during inclement weather, as the ridgeline here is not a good place to be in thunderstorms.

Many pension owners will drop off and pick up guests who are hiking and then staying in their lodges, he says; some sections also have bus and train connections as well.

He adds the winter is also a great time to travel along the ridgeline. “We snowshoe and hike on telemark or cross-country skis,” he says. He does suggest using a guide, as some of the sections are dangerous because of cornices and steep terrain.

“The Shinetsu Trail is also really interesting for people, and not only because of the natural beauty,” he adds. “You pass through old farm areas, you can see the towns, there are onsen everywhere, and great food. It’s a really good way to see Japan in a whole different way.” ✤

ounded in 1998, Oni Densetsu is operated by a company that makes a ll ma n ner of con fe c t ioner y t re at s purchased by tourists visiting Hokkaido.

Since the island is an ideal place to produce beer, it only makes sense the parent company, Wakasaimo, would start brewing beer for sale in small gift packages.

Not surprisingly, the beer soon beca me quite good and in recent years has won several awards. A s a result, you can now find Oni Densetsu beer in craft beer bars such as Beer Club Popeye in Tokyo.

Known for its sol id P i l se ne r- st y le lager, Oni Densetsu is a lso fa mous for the Akaoni Red Ale, technically a brown a l e t we a ke d to a c h i e v e a surprisingly reddish color through the use of roasted malts. At five percent alcohol, and with a slightly malty flavor with minimal hopping, it is a great beer

for long fall evenings when nabe-style one-pot dinners are enjoyed.

he Japanese are great imitators. They love to take little slices of the rest of the world and put them here in Japan. Go to Nagasaki to experience Holland at the Huis Ten Bosch Dutch Village. Marvel at the tree-lined canals and windmills made with authentic bricks imported from the Netherlands. It’s just like the real thing minus the hash-brownies.

Yokohama does a great impression of China. Their China Town’s colorful gates, gaudy temples and authentic steamed buns and noodles will keep Beijingers from getting homesick. There was even a Russian theme park established at the foot of the Gozu Mountains in Niigata, featuring Russian folk tales, traditional Kremlin-style domed roofs, boiled sausages and borsch. Sadly, this place went the same way of Soviet-style communism and communal work farms and now lies rusting in the sun.

The Naked Stranger recently discovered a place that gives you a little slice of North America in Nagano by recreating that Lake Wenatchee-feel of an authentic North American summer camp. It feels so authentic, you nearly expect a lunatic with an ice hockey goalie’s mask to leap out brandishing a kitchen knife.

The aptly named Gaijin-mura (Foreigner’s Village) sits on the edge of beautiful Lake Nojiri

in the Myoko Kogen area.

Unlike the commercial theme parks, Gaijinmura was established by foreign missionaries from North America nearly 100 years ago as an escape from the Tokyo summer heat and a refuge from the rat race. They built a number of cabins on the edge of a national park and have managed to protect the place from the ravishes of bubble-era developers. There is nary a swan boat or teddy bear museum to be found here.

Gaijinmura is managed by the Nojiri Lake Association, a foreigner-dominated committee with a mandate to maintain the natural, lowkey ambiance of the place. There are cabins to rent, marshmallows to be roasted and old Beatles songs just waiting to be butchered by second-rate guitar picking. Yes, all the things you loved spending summers on a lake in the U.S. or Canada.

Perhaps due to the Japanese fear of deathby-unagi (eel), you will be hard-pressed to find a single local swimming in the clear blue waters of Lake Nojiri, but you will see plenty of foreign kids bombing each other from diving boards.

So, if you are homesick for a little cabin at the lake, it may be worth a visit. Oh, and while you are there, be sure to drop by the Landmark for a bath.

The baths are quite acceptable, though nothing about which to get overly excited. The rotenburo (outdoor bath) has black mud (kuroi doro) in the water. It was originally established as a fortress for the forces of the legendary Niigata samurai Uesugi Kenshin in his war against Nagano’s Takeda Shingen in the 16th Century. The fortress was called Samegao and was maintained by Kenshin’s adopted son Saburo Kagetora.

•• Saburo Kagetora was renowned for his dashing good looks, and women from all over Japan still converge on Myoko Kogen in spring for a festival in his honor. Being handsome may have won him groupies 500 years after he died, but it didn’t do him any favors with the army of Takeda Shingen. He died by his own hand on Samegao Fort.

•• The Myoko Kogen area consists of seven main hot spring areas: Akakura, Shin Akakura, Ikenotaira, Myoko, Suginosawa, Tsubame and Seki. The onsen water in the Myoko region is known for its variety, boasting “seven hot springs, five spring qualities and three colors of water.”

•• Landmark Myoko Kogen has three main types of ions in the water: calcium, naturium and ammonium. The black mud in the rotenburo is said to be remedial for many skin ailments.

•• Skiiing in Myoko Kogen dates back to 1911, and Akakura, established in the 1930s, lays claim to be Japan’s first international ski resort.

It was like waking up from a dream.

Three decades of fishing flashed before me as I looked over the rail and locked eyes with the silver giant laying on its side at the ocean surface. After a two-and-a-half-hour fight, there wasn’t enough time for a photo op before the deckhand cut the leader and my trophy slipped back into the blue. The funny thing was I didn’t even care. In that instant every bit of the “fishing jones” in my soul cathartically evaporated and left me more at peace than I could ever remember. ot long ago I came up with a T-shirt design, jokingly illustrating the “staircase of fishing addiction,” in which the afflicted saltwater angler progresses from the easy coastal species to more challenging pelagics.

As he ascends the staircase, he engages in an increasingly relentless pursuit of bigger and bigger quarry located in the most remote watersheds around the globe. People who can continuously fish at this level are usually independently wealthy, or just plain crazy and willing to go at it with reckless abandon, no matter the consequences.

For all anglers there is an apex, a target at the very top of the staircase, over which they obsess. For game fish, this Holy Grail that will push anglers over the edge is, without

a doubt, thunnus thynnus, the majestic northern bluefin tuna.

Until recently the number one item on my bucket list had been landing a giant bluefin weighing more than 400 kilograms on standup tackle. When I first told some inshore fishing buddies what I was going to do, they laughed in my face, having never heard of such an absurd notion. What I knew was, not only was it possible, but there’s no greater fight to be had in big game fishing.

As a lure angler, I was first introduced to targeting bluefin on top water spin gear, which most experienced anglers will tell you is suitable for fighting tuna weighing upwards of 70 kilograms. This tackle is probably the most exciting means of landing tuna, but it will kick the crap out of anyone not in shape.

A few die-hard types actually do weight training in the run up to tuna season, just in case they hook a 100-plus-kilogram fish that can take all day to get to the boat.

I toiled away tossing plugs for several seasons thinking about this 100 kilograms leviathan, but it eventually dawned on me the biggest tuna I could hope to land on such light tackle was basically a guppy.

For many top water anglers, myself included, the first giant tuna caught on standup gear changes the ball game. Needless to say, tuna fishing is popular in Japan, but access to the best grounds in the country is usually granted exclusively to artisanal fishermen belonging to commercial cooperatives. Instead of the fisheries agency, the co-ops are largely in charge of managing the resources themselves, although some will point out rules banning the use of long lines and purse seines are routinely ignored by dodgy fishermen in search of a quick buck.

The one place recreational and commercial fishermen seem to have it right is the Genkai Sea off northern Kyushu. In these waters, skilled anglers can land tuna weighing well over 100 kilograms if they are guided by good skippers who know the best points, bait patterns and presentation methods.

If Kyushu doesn’t do it for you, another

option is southern New Zealand where liveaboard charters will take you several hundred miles offshore in search of commercial hoki trawlers. Massive schools of giant tuna weighing upwards of 300 kilos converge on these vessels as they haul in their nets to feed on hoki that fall through the mesh. A standup fight in New Zealand can take hours, as the fish can swim fast and deep, giving any angler who brings one to the boat the impression he’s taken it to the limit.

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world record bluefin tuna weighed in at 1,496 lbs. (678 kgs.), caught off Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada, in 1979. PEI is the bluefin capital of the world where the small tuna weigh in excess of 300 kilograms.

Before you dispatch a cabal of Sea Shepherd commandos to my house, bear in mind sport anglers witness the fragile state of fisheries around the globe first hand and most strongly advocate taking any necessary steps to help the biomass of tuna rebound.

It may sound extreme but, for my peers and me, the best case scenario would be an outright commercial trade ban. As much as I’d like to eat toro sashimi in good conscience, it’s clear commercial fishing interests the world over are too corrupt and shortsighted to be trusted, and most governments are not willing to come up with an appropriate or enforceable regulatory

framework.

Since a total ban is hardly likely in the near future, the fate of the species is in the hands of consumers who can demand transparency throughout the supply chain and have the option of not buying tuna taken using unsustainable methods. In this sense, Japanese consumers are the most capable of protecting the bluefin from extinction given that 80 percent of the fish harvested worldwide ends up in Japan.

I’m pretty sure my fish did not quite weigh 400 kilos, but catching and releasing a giant bluefin was as good as big game fishing gets. I’m encouraging my friends to give it a whirl but am personally satisfied to the point where I’d be happy if I never did it again. I’m just hoping there will still be some giants left when my daughter is old enough to fight one. ✤

ew Hampshire does not spring to mind as a place that produces many professional surfers. Yet Danny Melhado was born in the state’s northeastern woods. When he was 10, he moved south to sunny Florida where he first learned about waves and surfing. He started competing when he was 12, and by high school he was living in California and surfing every day.

“I happened to be competing in the same district as Kelly Slater (the current 10-time world champion),” he says. “So I got to see a great level of surfing through the boys, juniors and men’s divisions.”

Danny went on to compete internationally at ASP events and travel to surf spots all over the world; he also spent three years on the JPSA tour here in Japan. He stopped competing professionally three years ago.

He first came to Japan though, when he was 17 at the invitation of one of his sponsors, M Fiberglass, importer of Pro Shapes surfboards. The owner, Takeo Mitsui, brought Danny back to Japan year after year and has played a big role in his life ever since.

Although Danny spent a few years living in Hawaii, as well as in Sendai, Miyagi, today he runs Happy Surfing Okinawa, a small surf school and guesthouse he opened on Jan. 1, 2011, or “1-1-11” as he points out.

“We wanted to make a place where surfers could come and learn to surf and share their surfing

lifestyle experiences. We also import and sell some of the best surfboards and paddle boards on the island,” he adds.

How he ended up in Okinawa is a story in itself.

Years ago while living in Florida, he was surprised to meet a Japanese guy surfing there, being so far from Japan. Danny had already been to Japan a few times, so he invited him to his house for a BBQ. They had a great time, but his new Japanese buddy had to leave the next day. They didn’t see each other again for nearly 15 years.

Danny was at a JPSA contest in Shikoku when his friend Kin-san, a photographer, told him Keiichi was on his way to see him compete. “Keiichi?” Danny said. “Yeah, you took care of him a while back in Florida,” Kin replied.

Sure enough, his old friend, Keiichi Kimura, showed up. Only then did Danny discover he was the seventh generation boss of Yamari Shirasu, a well known shirasu (a type of baby sardine or anchovy popular in Japan) company. The two spent a few days surfing together in Shikoku when Keiichi asked, “You wanna go to Okinawa?”

“I replied, ‘sure,’ and we ended up there for a month surfing and chasing typhoon swells. I fell in love with the islands right away,” Danny recalls.

Shortly after he was introduced to Toyokazu Miyagi, or “Kazuboō” as he is known, the head of the Okinawa Surf Rider Association, and the rest, as they say, is history.

“Those guys all welcomed me and my family to the island with open arms,” he says. “It’s crazy how a small thing so many years ago changed my life and brought me to this wonderful island.”

Happy Surfing Okinawa customers are a mixed bag. Some come to learn to surf or try stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) for the first time; others are looking for a guide to take them to good local spots or get some pointers.

“Some people come to cruise and ride some easy, fun longboard-type waves, while others come to chase those perfect, shallow, hollow crystal tubes for which Okinawa is famous,” Danny says.

He won’t tell us where the best breaks are (and we wouldn’t print them if he did), as part of the fun of surfing is searching for waves. Conditions change, so he suggests studying swells, wind and tides and then decide where you want to go. The most popular spots can be found quite easily as maps are available and, although they do get crowded with tourists during holidays or on weekends, there are always some uncrowded waves if you look around.

famous for pottery, so if you need a break, you can stroll through pottery villages and natural hillside kilns. Fresh fish is sold every day near the harbor, and there’s a veggie market, plenty of restaurants and the second largest aquarium in the world is nearby. You can also do some hiking, snorkeling, search for desolate beaches, BBQ and they even built a brick oven to cook wood-fired pizzas after a day surfing or paddle boarding.

Serious surfers will want to come in summer or early fall when typhoons bring big swells. It takes timing, but from June to October, storms can roll in back-to-back for weeks. Winter is cooler, but the waves are more consistent as north winds bring a steady stream of waves toward Okinawa.

“Really, any time of year you can score great surf here,” Danny beams, “but you do need timing to get those amazing days.”

The main hazard surfing in Okinawa is the reef.

The tides are big, and the reef is exposed and dry at low tide at most spots. You can surf nearly all the time at medium and high tides, but it’s best to go with someone who knows the area if it’s your first time

“Use common sense, and you’ll be OK, but you need to be careful, especially in the most remote secret spots,” Danny warns. “Okinawa offers some of the safest waves as well as some of the most dangerous. Be honest with yourself and your ability with the risks you take.”

“Don’t just jump in because you see people out there; get informed before you dive in… or come see us. We’ll take you to places that fit your level and give you some tips, so you’ll be sure to have a good time surfing in Okinawa.” ✤

ny list of Southeast Asia surf spots will include Bali tubes and island hopping in Indo. Intrepid travelers may scribble down Sri Lanka or even Papua New Guinea, but jot down Thailand, and you’ll draw some raised eyebrows. Beautiful beaches and great scuba diving? Thailand definitely has both. Delicious sweat-inducing cuisine and sunburned Speedo-wearing Europeans? No doubt. But surf?

Ten years ago finding people riding waves in Thailand would have been rare. Today, Cobra, the world’s largest

surfboard manufacturer, churns out high performance epoxy boards for brands such as Surftech from their factory near Pattaya. Production costs have more to do with the location than the quality of the waves, but although Thailand doesn’t get as consistently big as the heavy hitters, it does get its share of small, fat waves, great for longboarding and beginners looking for some relaxed holiday fun.

Thailand’s western coast gets enough waves to attract a sizeable surf contingency, with the most popular spots

found on Phuket. Regulars in the water are a mix of Thais and ex-pats who have become part of the now large foreign community. The biggest swells arrive from May to September during monsoon season when rain showers can also be common; however, it also means it’s the slow season in Phuket, so there aren’t nearly as many tourists; hotel staff can be friendlier and there are some great deals to be had.

Haneda to Phuket, flock to Patong for golf tours and other entertainment, Kata Beach, about 45 minutes southwest, has a much more laid back feel.

Kata Beach is actually two beaches separated by a headland. If you walk or motor up the hill behind the south side of the beach, there is a lookout where you can see, from north to south, Kata Noi, Kata Yai and then Karon further north. Kata Noi is smaller and quieter,

with the Katathani Resort nestled just behind the beach.

The beach breaks here are for more experienced surfers, as the undertow can be strong with the best waves peeling off the northern headland. In the mornings, you’ll see a mix of locals and keen tourists out for a paddle. There is a hut on the north end of the beach that rents boards at reasonable prices, and there are other options at the hotels and local shops.

On the other side of the point is Kata Yai. This big, half-moon beach is the place for beginners and weekend

warriors. Because the waves are fairly consistent, it’s been the venue for international competitions, and even in low season it can get pretty crowded, but if you head out early, you’re likely to get some waves to yourself.

Rental boards are available on the beach or at a shop in town for about ¥400 / hour, ¥1,000 / half-day, ¥1,200 / full-day, but note the shops usually don’t open until 9 a.m., so if you want to get in an early session, ask to rent a board for a day or two.

The laid back Ska Bar, set into the rocks on the south side of the beach, is a great place to chill out with a cold drink after a day in the water.

Royale Retreat Kata has a wide range of guesthouses and boutique hotels, even a Club Med in the neighborhood. The farther you get from the beach, the less you can expect to spend, and with scooters available for ¥500 a day, it’s easy to get around. If you are planning a surf trip, the surf shops can arrange accommodations and might offer some breaks on rentals as well.

While reading up on Kata before leaving Japan, we noticed Mom Tri’s name kept popping up with rave reviews. The name elicited the image of a large, sternfaced Thai woman reigning over her place with an iron spoon.

Yet, Mom Tri is short for Mom Luang Tridhosyuth Devakul, a Harvard-educated artist and architect who helped pioneer the development of Phuket and the Kata area going back to the 1970s. After getting his degree in architecture, he was invited by a relative to build a small

hotel on Kata Beach, so he headed down to have a look.

“There was nothing in this whole area… nothing on the west coast existed,” he said. “It was fantastic. And so, I sort of enjoyed it here for myself for eight years, just beach combing and sharing the beach with all these naked hippies.”

In the meantime, he fell in love with Phuket and realized the beaches were too beautiful to be kept a secret for much longer. While working on some groundbreaking projects such as Club Med and Le Méridien, he also built himself a house on the hillside between Kata Yai and Kata Noi; it was a simple thatched-roof bungalow at first but, over the years, he kept building additions to his personal retreat.

There is some good, cheap Thai food in town, plenty of western, European and Asian restaurants at various price ranges and even some festive bars along the main road going north toward Karon. You can relax at one of the spas, get tangled up in a Thai massage, drop in one of the Thai boxing gyms or spend hours wandering the streets shopping for keepsakes.

Paradise Reborn 生 ま れ 変 わっ た パ ラダ イス

T

he name Zeavola comes from the Latin name for the half flower tree, called rak talay in Thai, meaning “lover of the sea.” For generations, sea loving nomads have hopped from island to island in the Andaman Sea. Today, some have taken residency on Phi Phi Don, often referred to as “Phi Phi,” the largest island in Thailand’s Krabi Province and the only one with permanent residents. These sea gypsies can make more selling their fish to tourist restaurants here than at the markets in Krabi, and there is steady work taxiing tourists around the islands.

Laem Tong Beach is on the quiet northeast corner of Phi Phi Don, near the five-star Zeovola resort. Here, there are a couple sea gypsy villages, where ropes lead out from the shore to long-tailed boats waiting for guests who want a ride down to Ton Sai, the lively town at the center of the island.

On one side of Ton Sai the speed boats, ferries and dive boats are anchored or docked. A short walk across a flat stretch of land, just two meters above sea level, is the main beach, littered with sun worshipers and travelers enjoying hot days and long nights. In between, narrow streets are packed with souvenir shops, restaurants, bars, dive shops and cheap accommodation catering to the shoestring crowd; mostly young people enjoying short escapes or long journeys until they have to go back to school or work.

Ton Sai’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to stay there. The more peaceful northern tip of the island is just a 15-20 minute long-tail ride, so it’s easy to get your fill of music and fire dancing and then retreat to the rhythms of the jungle. Luckily the best green curry can be found up on Laem Tong Beach at the Jasmin Restaurant. Run by Peter, a friendly Scotsman, and his wife Tak, this no frills restaurant serves big portions of

delicious Thai food, tasty mojitos and a portion of your bill goes to support the local school.

I was digging my toes into the sand here when Peter and I started up a conversation. Discovering I was traveling from Japan, we soon found ourselves talking about the recent tsunami in Japan, drawing parallels to the devastating one that hit Phi Phi less than a decade ago.

On Boxing Day (Dec. 26), 2004, the tranquil Andaman Sea turned terrifying. A massive undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a series of devastating tsunami that would strike nearly every land mass in the Indian Ocean, Phi Phi included.

“When the wave hit Phi Phi it wrapped around the island,” Peter recalls, “so when it arrived it actually hit Ton Sai from both sides.”

On that fateful day, Peter was on another island, Koh Lanta. “The tsunami wave carried me about 350 meters, but luckily I was able escape,” he says.

Peter lost 18 friends that day.

Admittedly, Koh Phi Phi wasn't prepared for a disaster of this magnitude. There was no Early Warning System (EWS), and information was scarce on what to do in case of emergency. Of the roughly 8,000 people working or enjoying their winter holiday on the island that day, a quarter were reported killed or missing.

Today there are signs in many places of the island showing evacuation routes to safe ground as well as a network of EWS stations in place to warn people on the island of any potential danger. Considering all the infrastructure was destroyed on Koh Phi Phi, it’s encouraging to see how the island and the people have bounced back. Ton Sai is once again packed with travelers and hedonistic revelers, an armada of boats hit the water each morning for island hopping trips to Phi Phi Leh, the infamous setting for the movie "The AUTUMN

Beach," or to explore the many great dive sites.

Due to the geography of Phi Phi Don, Laem Tong Beach was mostly spared and so too were the sea gypsies. Many of their boats and nets were damaged or destroyed, however, and so was their livelihood. Since then, boats have been repaired or replaced and life is much as it was before, with a few new developments.

One of which is Zeavola. This natural resort opened in 2005 despite the fact tourism had recently taken a major hit. General Manager Florian Hallermann said they thought it was important to open as planned and show their commitment to the island as the community was pulling together.

The hard work has paid off. Zeavola has the charms of a rural village, with meandering sandy paths you can stroll barefoot along to private teakwood villas set back into the beach. Hillside villas have awesome Andaman views of nearby islands, and you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of nature without a worry in the world.

With time, history fades, yet Boxing Day 2004 has not been forgotten on Phi Phi. Locals seem more vigilant than before, and steps have been taken to make sure past mistakes will not be repeated. Yet, as we have learned here in Japan, no place is perfect, no place totally safe. Visitors have returned to Phi Phi knowing that with life there is risk, but without risk there is no living. They return because they love to travel and they love this island, and Japan should take comfort in this.✤ —Gardner Robinson

Enjoying some ‘rays’ in Tahiti

ach year Peace Boat travels the world on peace voyages. Participants on a recent voyage stopped in Tahiti and nearby Moorea Island for an Eco Tour, swimming with sting r ays and bl ack tip reef shar ks, and al so learning about dolphins and other marine life in the area.

Moorea is older and completely surrounded by coral.”

The island has receded over time, so now a lagoon surrounds it, protected by the coral reef. This lagoon provides an ideal spot for sting rays and black tip reef sharks to swim and for snorkelers to observe them.

“Cor al reefs prov ide a r ich habitat for marine life around the islands. A s a reef develops, it becomes a geologic feature, made of calcium carbonate from the skeletons of dead coral and other sea creatures such as

crabs and sea urchins,” Murphy explained.

“Live coral continues to grow on top of the reef. Coral is an animal, and it only grows in the tropics. It has a skeleton on the inside, but the outside is very soft,” he continues.

“Although cor al is not a plant, it needs to have light, because it has a s ymbiotic relationship with algae, and the algae need light. Algae are what give coral its brilliant colors, but sometimes if the coral is under stress, it ejects the algae from its tissue.

This is known as coral bleaching. Bleaching can result when the water becomes warmer, c ausing s tr e s s to the cor al . S ometime s the warm water from El Niño causes coral bleaching. Scientists are concerned about how climate change will affect the world’s coral reefs.

Af ter learning about marine biology and environmental issues related to coral conservation, participants enjoyed swimming and snorkeling at one of Moorea’s beautiful beaches and later a picnic lunch at a fare pote’e, or traditional Polynesian house, outside the University of California Berkeley Gump Research Station.

hen a bunch of surfers get together, they like to talk about things such as their ability to sense the coming of a typhoon before everyone else, or about when the swells will arrive. A farmer, sitting nearby hearing a similar conversation, made the statement above, pronouncing the word “surfer” in Japanese as saha- instead of sa-fa- as is normally the case.

But he is correct. Ever y surfer thinks of himself as a weather forecaster and tends to go around giving his “professional” opinion about typhoons. They are adults who act like kids; overanticipating good waves and unable to sleep the night before a surf trip. Land sports just can’t compare to the natural thrill you get from surfing.

On the other hand, a person who works the land, raising crops by his own hand, also confronts the danger of crop damage. Surfing can be seen as recreation, just playing around, so I think there was a bit of cynicism in what the farmer said. But I sure understand where he’s coming from.

There are a lot of people who deep down want to try surfing, but they explain it away by saying they are too old, or that they just haven’t had the chance. If they’d just throw away the pretense, there’s a fun world waiting for them. Our cynical farmer, too, actually went with me out into the ocean once. After a little coaching, I gave him the longboard and, with a frantic expression, he began to paddle.

At first he lost his balance and couldn’t make much progress paddling, but the farmer was stronger than I expected. His work is much different than that of a salary man; farming every day tests one’s physical strength.

Many farmers are also people who stubbornly hate to lose. Although he didn’t stand up, all of the sudden, with the white waves pushing him, he rode in to shore.

He then repeated this several times and finally was able to stand up on the board. I saw what had happened, and from a distance threw up my hands and yelled, “Yatta! ” He answered by throwing both hands into the air; a middle-aged man smiling like a kid.

“Only surfers enjoy the arrival of a typhoon.”

The words themselves might seem cynical to surfers, but if you knew the person saying the words was a farmer who had also been surfing, you’d probably understand it was a very gentle cynicism.

After a typhoon passed, I asked, “Did you have any damage from the typhoon?” “No, nothing serious,” he responded, “but, more importantly, did you get any waves?”

“Age shio ja, age shio ja,” is the old saying that things are moving in the right direction.

Understanding another person’s point of view, I believe, helps our spirits do the same.

The swells fade. The farmer heads out to clear the weeds around his field.

n June of 2010, I cycled along Tohoku’s Kitakami River to Ishinomaki, Miyagi, as preparation for a cycling tour. When I heard and saw on the news what changes the March 11 earthquake and tsunami had brought to the once idyllic scenery and to the lives of the people there, I was literally lost for words.

In mid-August, I had the chance to join some volunteer activities in the area, so I headed back up. After spending a few days there, I left Ishinomaki with the impression it still has a long way to go before the restoration is complete, and volunteers would continue to be in great demand for some time.

Nestled deep in the northwest corner of Gunma, Kusatsu Onsen always makes the list for best onsen destinations in Japan. This favorite of shogun who regularly visited the town’s baths and inns features therapeutic water so cherished they shipped it to Edo Castle for bathing.

Jigokudani is a slice of heaven for a group of about 250 Japanese macaques living near the Jigokudani (Hell’s Valley) Monkey Park. There aren’t many (or any) places you can see wild monkeys bathe in their own hot springs. Visitors can observe them lounging in the hot baths from late autumn until early spring; just follow the laws of nature and don’t make eye contact or you may find yourself with a too-close-for comfort encounter. Nearby Yudanaka Onsen is a better option for humans.

October is the month for cycling in Southern Nagano. The area isn’t as wet as central and northern Nagano, which means you can enjoy great cycling into late fall. The hills around Lake Suwa and Chino are great for road cycling. Follow the Venus Line along the Kirigamine Plateau to Lake Shirakaba and down into Tateshina. Wild-Bora Gorge is a typical “sports crag” from vertical to overhand and roof routes that give you good workout. There are many good onsen nearby to soothe sore muscles after climbing.

A pioneering Japanese climber spent years establishing the Futagoyama area. Today it is a well-known spot known for challenging sport climbing; It’s steep with long routes ranging from moderately difficult to arguably some of the hardest routes around. On the opposite side, there is a beautiful, fairly easy, multi-pitch route less hardcore climbers can enjoy. You need a car to get here and camping options nearby are limited.

Naeba’s Dragondola Ablaze in Autumn Y

ou may have been to Naeba in winter to visit Naeba Resort, one of Japan’s most popular ski resorts. Or perhaps you are one of the thousands of Fuji Rockers who know the area well from the world-famous international music festival that takes over the town each summer. Autumn is also an excellent time to visit Niigata’s Naeba area. Temperatures are cool, the air is crisp and clean and the leaves come alive in blazing colors in October and November.

The Dragondola opened in 2001, and at 5,481 meters long, it boasts being the longest in the world, stays open in autumn so visitors can get a bird’s-eye view of the hills as they are ablaze in reds, browns and golds. From Prince’s Naeba Resort, you climb 425 meters on the 25-minute ride to the neighboring Tashiro Gondola, enjoying the changing colors along the way. On a clear day you can also enjoy the view of Mt.Tairappyō, the mountain ranges at the border of Niigata and Lake Futai, and some fast flowing rivers below.

At Tashiro Kōgen (1,345 meters) you can stop by Arumu Restaurant. The name means “farm on the hill,” and since it’s located at 1,345 meters, it seems fitting. The restaurant’s wide windows, high ceilings and original dishes make for a nice place for some high altitude dining. From Tashiro you can take the Tashiro Ropeway (10 minutes) to Futai. At 230 meters off the ground, this is the highest ropeway in Japan. From Futai there is a shuttle bus back to Naeba that takes 20 minutes. The whole “Kōyō Triangle” takes about 80 minutes depending on how long you want to stay.

Naeba Independent Boardwalk If you’ve made the pilgrimage to Fuji Rock, you have no doubt walked along the pleasant wooden boardwalk behind the White Stage that takes you out to Orange Court. If you haven’t, then you have no idea what we are talking about, however, you are also missing out on the longest boardwalk in Japan. Naeba’s boardwalk is nearly two kilometers long and two meters wide, so people can easily pass by each other. It’s also barrier-free, so people using wheelchairs can easily enjoy a stroll through the forest with the background music of wind in the threes and a mountain stream rippling over rocks.

The Naeba Boardwalk continues to grow with the contributions of visitors, yet it is free to enjoy anytime except the snow season. If you would like to donate ¥1,000, you’ll be adding one additional piece of lumber, on which you can write a personal message on the bottom before it is added to the boardwalk.

ACCESS Naeba is 25 minutes from Yuzawa I.C. on the Kanetsu Expressway and 30 minutes from JR Echigo Yuzawa Station by car.
