Welcome to the culmination of another successful and rewarding year in football and netball and everyone involved is to be congratulated. Despite the worst weather conditions we have had for a final series in years, we had a fantastic finals program and the crowds were the same as last year with only a small number of hundreds of dollars different in the gate takings, which says a lot for our brand of football and netball.

Well done to all the teams that won the ultimate goal and got to share what being involved in teams sports is all about. Thank you to all the host clubs that made the finals series what it was but I would like to make a special mention to Kym Estcourt and members of the Healesville Club that helped us out with 2 weeks of back to back Saturday and Sunday games due to the below average state of some of the allotted grounds, thanks Kym for your support and please pass on my personal thanks to your club members for their help.

The football continues to improve and get better as does the netball that has just continued to get bigger each year. The way that clubs have embraced the “Family Culture” that netball brings to the club has helped to reshape this league and we are all very thankful as it continues to give as a point of difference.

To our major sponsors and partners, thank you again for your continued belief in grass roots footy and your financial support which makes our competition one we can all be very proud of. To Mr Charles Exton of High Mountain Spring Water our lead sponsor and partner, thank you for your willingness to continue in that role and I personally look forward to a long and prosperous relationship between our two organizations.

We welcomed a new lead sponsor of Second Division in Darren

Speaking of initiative I can’t let the moment go past without thanking the Warburton Millgrove and Gembrook Cockatoo clubs for getting their heads together and playing a combined side so that their kids were given the opportunity of playing football. Not the best fit geographically, but everyone involved in both clubs knew why it was done and it was just a sensational effort and result.

We ran our second year of the Certificate III in Sport and for the first time as the sole sponsor. We had 28 young Yarra Valley Mountain people graduate with an Australian recognized qualification that has the makings of a truly life changing experience. These are our club committee people of the future and we have given them the necessary skills to be successful. This has the potential to be something really big over the next 3-5 years and one of the most gratifying things that we have done outside running a healthy and thriving football and netball league.

This was a year of firsts for our league, and we can all be very proud of the difference we make no matter what role we play. It started in the pre season when Yea hosted our first ever NAB Cup Game between the Cats and Tigers. The ground was in magnificent shape and a good crowd was on hand to see this first game for our league. Hopefully we can now continue this every year.

For the first time in our history we had a trifecta of Interleague wins on the road, and so the trip to St Arnaud was an absolute pleasure and the results even better. To our Interleague coaches in Mark Sandilands, Brett Fisher and Kate Upton thanks for helping as we continue to build on this very important facet of the league which allows us to show case what we can do. Hopefully we can continue to get the support from all players and clubs so that we go with the best the Yarra Valley and Mountain District can offer. Not to stop there, Kate then took the girls for the first time to play in the Netball Victoria Association Championships and came away with the cup. First time up, first time winners does it get any better?

Grand Final day 1st Division we had the “Big Screen” for those magic moment replays as well as a chance to thank some sponsors. All reports were that we got the thumbs up and we also heard that there were some interested onlookers from the EFL to see how the screen went. Maybe we could expect to see it again next year. Then we started up the “Valley Vision” for replays of football and netball finals streaming onto the web to be viewed by anyone at anytime via their PC. During our trial period we were getting 5,000 ‘Valley Vision’ hits a week. We learnt a lot from the trial period which will be invaluable when we go live next year taping all senior 1st and 2nd Division games, which will be another first.

As you can see we have had a lot of “First’s” to celebrate and they will form the base as we continue to drive our very successful football and netball competitions.

Sadly, we bid farewell to the Silvan Football Club who have decided that a change in competition will suit them going forward and I wish them well in their endeavors.

To Leo, Tony and Ed who bring the footy to us each week through the radio. This continues to be a real plus for our league I can only personally thank you for all your efforts and time, and hope to hear you calling again next year.

The league presentation night continues to get better and bigger and this year was no exception with over 290 guests in attendance. Thanks to Sandy Roberts for hosting again and congratulations to all award winners.

To our office staff Steve Walter, Judy Orren and Stacey Cooper who bring it all together for us and are the main contact points for the clubs. An outstanding year and I cannot thank you enough for your time and care with the way you go about your business.

To my fellow board members who I have been honored to work with Leo Groenewegen my Vice President, Billy Heppell, Frank Moss , Mick Hill, Jason Leeds, Jodi Chandler and our newest member Rodney Woods. Your commitment is nothing short of outstanding and helps to make our league one that we are all very proud of. The financial results that we share with the clubs tonight are directly related to your hard work and you can be justly very proud.

Finally my last thank you is to my wife Beth who makes the sacrifices that allows me the time needed to do the job.

Season 2010 culminated in Division One having 9 out of 10 clubs competing on Grand Final day. This is truly an unbelievable result and does accurately reflect the commitment and drive that all clubs demand to be successful both on and off the field. Congratulations to all clubs on their achievements and special congratulations to all of those teams fortunate enough to win a grand final.

It is pleasing to be involved with a progressive league and once again, we have moved forward with some key initiatives that continue to cement our well regarded brand and our objective of delivering a great family environment for those of us in our community that love football and netball.

Valley Vision was a new initiative, and we have been pleased with its introduction during our finals series. There are some refinements needed, but the base has been established and I look forward to weekly highlight packages for all senior games next season. The full game will also be made available to clubs and umpires for training and planning purposes. I would like thank Jason Sach who has been instrumental in helping us to realise this opportunity. Thank you Jason, your commitment has been outstanding. Jason was also influential with our first foray into the operation of a Big Screen during the grand final. I can confidently say that for a first up effort, our advancements with technology and our successes augur well for the 2011 season.

Once again, our President, Graeme Tuplin has been a leading light for our league. Graeme is a passionate and committed Yarra Valley supporter. Much of Graeme’s work goes unnoticed and his support and approach makes it a pleasure to work with him. Congratulations Graeme on an outstanding season.

Our radio team, capably led by Leo Groenewegen, once again has delivered another outstanding season of commentary. Their promotion of our league is delivered with passion and enthusiasm and their work during the finals series, expressly backing up Saturdays and Sundays for 5 weeks displays first rate dedication. As volunteers, they are highly valued members of our sporting community. Congratulations to Ed Summerfield, Tony Foo and Leo for their unshakable commitment.

Bill Heppell is a long standing and committed Valley supporter. His role as Tribunal secretary and the important work he does at finals time makes him an invaluable member of the team. Thank you Bill for your efforts during 2010. Jodi Chandler, Rodney Woods, Mick Hill, Jason Leeds and Frank Moss are also dedicated Directors whose support is highly valued when needed, thank you all for your outstanding support. Jason is stepping down due to work commitments, but I am confident Jason will return. Thank you for your time with the Board Jason.

In keeping with our theme of delivering a great community service, Kate Upton’s appointment as our Netball Development Manager has been spectacularly successful. Kate is a wonderful ambassador and her knowledge of netball and her support of almost every club was first class. I look forward to Kate continuing her strong focus on development and ensuring that our netball competition delivers continued success. Furthermore, Kate’s efforts in coaching our Association Team to the prestigious honour of State Champions, further reinforces

the direction we are heading. Both Jodi Chandler and Anita Woods provided great support to Kate and the team in achieving our breakthrough championship victory.

Our umpiring department is growing from strength to strength. Dom Kearney has led the group well and his passion, professionalism and respect are highly valued. John Edwards has also been instrumental in our success. John is a true gentleman and his leadership is one of the key factors as to why our League continues to grow and prosper. Dom and John have been capably supported by Trevor Mc Garry, Bob Allen and Alan Ashmore who have further added professionalism to our umpiring fraternity.

Our momentum continues with the Future Leaders Program successfully graduating 28 trainees in Certificate III in Sport. The program is a wonderful opportunity for our young athletes. Our graduation ceremony which included parents and club Presidents was a great night.

Sponsors are integral to the success of any community based organisation. We are fortunate to have several key businesses that are committed to their local communities and their generous support is highly valued. I urge you all to support them where possible. Charles Exton & High Mountain Spring Water; Darren Adams & The Irrigation Shed; Paul Wolff & Porter Davis Homes; Mike Fleming & Bendigo Bank Upwey / Dandenong Ranges; Les King & YV Financial Services; Brett Fisher & Central Scaffolds; Adam Parkinson & Parkinson

Asphalt; Darren Edwards & Sticks Yarra Valley and Tony Barnes & Barracuda Security.... thank you for your generous support and I look forward to your continued support in 2011.

As a league, we are committed to interleague, and once again, our foray to St Arnaud was very successful. Mark Sandilands, Brett Fisher & Kate Upton are our outstanding coaches and represented our league with distinction. To all of our volunteers, trainers, assistants, runners and water carriers; thank you for your outstanding support.

Judy and Stacey are important members of the League team and I thank them for their contribution and support of me and all of the clubs. There is no doubt there are areas we need to improve on, and it will always be part of our continuous improvement journey. We welcome feedback and will always strive to meet the requirements of all clubs. Our league is establishing a healthy financial position which can only position us at strength to help build our future and advance our continuous improvement journey.

Thank you to all of the supporters of our great football & netball league; we have a unique brand that is the envy of our peers. Finally, thank you to my family, especially Jo-Anne for her unswerving commitment and support of my endeavours to do the best job I can.

FINANCE REPORT

Season 2010 has delivered another strong financial performance for our football and netball league. The improvement in our net profit, up almost $29,000 (47%) to $90,856 reinforces the success of our business model and further enhances the strong footing now established in our balance sheet. Continued financial success will position our league at strength and is the key enabler to ensure that we continue to deliver a valuable and great quality community service.

The Board has approved a rebate of $30,000 for the 2010 season which recognises and rewards those clubs that commit to the league’s sales arm. The Board has already approved and advanced player reimbursements to eligible clubs totalling almost $19,000. This has resulted in $49,000 being returned to clubs as a direct result of our strong financial performance this season. Detailed sales ladder and rebate information is included in the attached table.

There are many opportunities available through the league office that can assist in the day to day running of football and netball clubs. Some of our preferred suppliers, including Bayswater Cake Kitchen, High Mountain Spring Water, Club Meats, Victor and Schweppes to name a few, offer great products that will assist all clubs in achieving greater rebate returns. Please take the opportunity to understand the offering and the more we all support each other, the greater the returns will be for all of us.

Our experiment with the Big Screen was very successful, and with outstanding support of local business advertising, the Big Screen turned out to deliver a positive contribution to our financial performance. Our 2010 finals attendances and revenue, especially given the poor weather conditions is truly a stand out achievement and without doubt, a credit to all clubs and their supporters. The media hype surrounding Kinglake’s performances in the 2009 finals was always going to be difficult to preserve, however, we managed to almost match last season’s result which is a credit to the hard work of all of our clubs, their committees and members.

STATEMENT BY MEMBERS OF THE BOARD

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT

TO THE MEMBERS OF YARRA VALLEY MOUNTAIN DISTRICT FOOTBALL & NETBALL LEAGUE INCORPORATED

Scope

We have audited the financial report, being a special purpose financial report comprising the Statement by Members of the Board, Statement of Comprehensive Income, Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Changes in Equity, Statement of Cash Flows, and notes to and forming part of the accounts of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated for the year ended 31st October 2010. The Board is responsible for the financial report and has determined that the accounting policies used are appropriate to meet the needs of the Associations Incorporation Act [Victoria] and the needs of the members. We have conducted an independent audit of this financial report in order to express an opinion on it to the members. No opinion is expressed as to whether the accounting policies used, and described in Note 1, are appropriate to the needs of the members.

The financial report has been prepared for the purpose of fulfilling the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act [Victoria]. We disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than for which it was prepared.

Our audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial report and the evaluation of significant accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion whether, in all material respects, the financial report is presented fairly in accordance with accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements so as to present a view which is consistent with our understanding of the Association's financial position, and performance as represented by the results of its operations and its cash flows. These policies do not require the application of all Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements.

The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.

Qualification

Cash transactions form a large part of finals income which are a source of revenue for the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated. The Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated has determined that it is impracticable to establish complete control over the collection of cash transactions prior to entry into its financial records. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding revenue from this source was limited, our audit procedures with respect to finals income had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. We therefore are unable to express an opinion whether the finals income the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated obtained are complete.

Qualified Audit Opinion

In our opinion, except for the effects on the financial report of such adjustments, if any, as might have been required had the limitation on our audit procedures referred to in the qualification paragraph not existed, the financial report presents fairly in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial report the financial position of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated as at 31st October 2010 and the results of its operations for the year then ended.

This season has seen an increase of 12 reports (44%) to 39 over 2009. Of those reported, 19 set penalties were taken. Of all reports, only 1 was found not guilty, A brief summary of reports include:

• 15 for “Striking”

• 2 for “Attempting to strike”

• 1 for “Charging”

• 2 for “Failing to leave playing surface when directed”

• 3 for “Misconduct”

• 2 for “Engaging in rough conduct”

• 1 for “Striking an Umpire”

• 1 for “Kicking another person”

• 6 for “Abusive towards an Umpire”

• 3 for “Abusive Language”

With over 600 games played, we average approximately one report for every 15 games. This ratio will need to improve.

INTERLEAGUE REPORT - FOOTBALL

We travelled to St Arnaud with 60 of the YVMDFNL’s best athletes to tackle North Central Football League in senior and under 18 football. Two outstanding teams saw the Yarra Valley win both WorkSafe Cups with the under 18 team setting the scene with a hard fought victory at the picturesque but very large Lord Nelson Park in country St Arnaud.

Capably led by Warburton’s Alex Calder, Yarra Valley was pushed all the way in a tight & demanding encounter. YVMDFNL 13 15 def North Central Football League 13 8. Going into the last quarter, Yarra Valley held a slender 11 point lead, and part way through, North Central hit the lead and it did look ominous for our under 18’s. Yarra Valley did not kick straight...which was adding to the pressure. At one stage it looked like North Central would run away with the game, but a crucial resurgence late in the quarter with 2 important goals saw Yarra Valley run out 7 point winners. Michael Gavric from Seville was adjudged best on ground with an outstanding four quarter effort. INTERLEAGUE REPORT - FOOTBALL

The senior team had a game on their hands with North Central having most of the first quarter play but kicking inaccurately. At quarter time, Yarra Valley just held sway, leading 3.1 to North Central 2.4.

Yarra Valley had a dominant second quarter and went into the main change 21 point leaders. Monbulk’s Luke McCormick was playing great football and amassing many possessions and was the catalyst for many of Yarra Valley’s forward drives.

The third quarter saw North Central play strong football and was able to reduce Yarra Valley’s lead to just 17 points. It did look that North Central had the momentum to keep going but Yarra Valley stood tall & dominated the last quarter with 7 goals with both Robbie Allan & Chris Murphy starring up forward.

The final scores: Yarra Valley 18 13 def North Central 11 13. Best afield & the VCFL medal went to Robbie Allan (Woori Yallock) who played a dominant role both at back & up forward. Chris Hayes (Upwey) was equally dominant with 4 goals. Yarra Valley’s other best players include Luke McCormick (Monbulk), Chris Murphy (Mt Evelyn), Liam Barnard (Warby) and Nick Broomhall (Olinda). Senior coach Mark Sandilands was full of praise for all of his players and was impressed in how the team lifted in the last quarter.

Yarra Valley has now won their past two Interleague matches in both 18s and seniors and looks likely to be playing Western Border Football League in 2011.

We had a very successful interleague experience this year right from the start. We had a great turn out to both try-outs, with good numbers representing both divisions.

The talent within the league is getting better and stronger each year, and the most exciting thing is that the up and coming talent is young, raw girls we can really work with and develop.

After two try-outs we selected a squad of 16 girls, that attended 3 training sessions, all the girls very eager to learn and work together to produce the best to date Interleague team to take the court.

The Final 10 players picked, a group of girls any coach would be thrilled to work with, the likes of 8 VNL players:

Sarah Hogan (Mt. Evelyn)

Melissa Martinov (Wandin)

Ella Priestley (Mt. Evelyn)

Jade Hottes (Mt. Evelyn)

Gaby Duncan (Yea)

Lauren Tesoriero (Mt. Evelyn)

Lauren Close (Wandin)

Olivia Aughton (Wandin)

and 2 development players:

Bianca Daniels (Warburton)

Sam Hansen (Powelltown)

We headed up to Bendigo the night before to make sure we had the fresh legs to take on North Central.

Warm up was picture perfect with the intensity you want to flow straight into the game. I asked the girls to go out one on one,

high intensity, set the pace of the game for the first 5 minutes, they certainly did that with 4 turnovers and finishing the quarter with a total of 12, and 21 goals to North Central’s 7.

The second quarter was our best for the game. Our defensive pressure was almost text book style with another 16 turnovers and only allowing North Central to score 5 goals to our 21.

Lauren Close, Olivia Aughton, Jade Hottes and Ella Priestley’s decision making reflected the score line.

In the third quarter we made changes which allowed our development players the opportunity to step up and show the experienced girls what they had to offer the team. Sam Hansen shooting 21/30 and Bianca Daniels getting 2 turnovers and contributing to the 5 team turnovers, showed their team mates they had plenty to offer.

All I asked was the intensity and defensive pressure didn’t drop off in the last quarter and the attack end had the rotation, body position, placement and control they needed to not cause any forced errors. The girls finished off the game almost as good as they started with 10 turnovers and another 21 goals to North Centrals 8.

These girls realise the importance of the team game, they play for each other and played to get the best possible result for the league. We as a league should be so proud of their efforts at Interleague, but not only that, we should be so excited that we have such elite netballers wanting to play, represent our area, and strengthen our competition.

Well done to everyone involved, the Players, Stephen Walter, our Assistant Coach & Selector Anita Woods, Selector Jodie Chandler and Scorer Stacey Cooper, what a great result!

OPEN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The YVMDFNL headed into the State netball hockey centre for the Loud Association Championships. We set a few Team goals to stick to all day, never under estimate your opponent and work as 1 (team) not 12 individuals.

We had a rocky start, a loss at Round 1 to Ovens and Murray was something we didn’t plan, and something we definitely needed to grow from. We couldn’t lose another game for the rest of the rounds otherwise finals were out of reach! The girls stuck to the game plan and came away with 5 wins, which put us in second place.

There were 2 open sections, only top 2 of each section went through to finals.

YVMDFNL had to play Goulburn Valley who finished top in section 1. Going back to the goals we had set for the day, we couldn’t at any point under estimate Goulburn as a team. We had to make sure we controlled every pass, and made the right choices. The girls started strong, we made a change at half time, and the adapted quickly and finished as strong as they started with a final score of 18-8.

Our next challenge, the Grand Final, it was a chance to redeem ourselves from Round 1, as we had Ovens and Murray. They were a very physically strong team, and moved the ball quickly. We had to slow their flowing game and get hands over every ball, but more importantly we had to play a very controlled game of netball, to be any chance. Controlled, front position and our attack end having patience, working the ball on and off the circle to wait for not just the first option but the right option, would be the key to finishing ahead.

With very limited errors the game was tight at the break, YVMDFNL down by a goal.

I asked the girls to give me everything they had left physically, and make sure they were always in the front position before receiving a pass. Play it safe don’t choose the big risk passes, work as 1 to get it into the goalers. I knew if we could force two turnovers and convert on every centre pass, we would be in with a big chance.

They played controlled and pretty much error free netball for the next half, we got the two turnovers we needed and come away with an amazing one goal win, a win that would make any coach PROUD.

UMPIRES REPORT

The 2010 season was once again a great year for Yarra Valley football, from my view point the umpiring this season was of an excellent standard right the way through.

After 18 rounds of tough, hard footy the finals began. The home-and-away season had given the Board an idea as to how the umpires were ranked, but the finals could change all that and indeed that proved to be the case. The finals were the most analyzed games of the season. The Board meetings that occurred on the Sunday night to discuss appointments for the following weeks were long and intense discussions.

Eventually we came to a consensus; our selections were validated on the following weekend until finally we selected the grand final appointments. As I have stated on several occasions to the umpiring group, no grand final position was given lightly, everyone deserved their appointment. Obviously there are those who were disappointed to not gain a higher position or missed out all together. Hopefully those individuals come back next year and try to go one better.

The winners of the major awards this year were Paul Shoebridge as the best Field Umpire, Troy Duncan as the best Boundary Umpire and Andrew Marshall as the best Goal Umpire. Troy Duncan also won the ‘Golden Whistle’ award, equivalent to the AFL’s ‘Rising Star’ award. The finals performance of the year was awarded to Brad Giraud, after he ran a boundary game in the morning (after a late phone call), then goal umpired a senior game in the second week of the finals. The League medal for Umpire of the Year was won by Leigh Walters.

From a recruiting viewpoint for next year, we are seeking to expand numbers and experience. There is work to be done by the Board over the summer for this to occur. It is fair to say that the core senior group is strong, having built a good rapport with most Clubs. The younger, less experienced umpires are progressing well, we have John Fenton nominated for the VFL in the field; Troy Duncan and Jarrod Mc Phee nominated in the boundary, with several nominated for the V/Line academy next year.

From a coaching viewpoint after reviewing the grand finals and editing the DVDs, I will use these examples in sessions next season. Again there will be DVD examples used from the AFL/VFL, but extra footage from the Yarra Valley competition will help get the message across. My belief is that the group will understand the Board’s perspective if they can see clear examples of what the Board is asking for. While I do believe the standard of umpiring at the Yarra Valley is very good, there is always room to improve.

Finally I would like to make some thank you’s. Firstly the umpires board: Bob who has again gone that extra yard for the association. Trevor who despite personal inconveniences trained the boys perfectly through out the year; Alan who came aboard at the last minute and produced excellent performances from the boundaries and John who is indispensable in the running of the umpires.

To Stephen, his staff and the Yarra Valley Board thank you for your support through out the year, it has been a pleasure to work with such people. Lastly, but not leastly to my fiancée Vanessa thank you.
