PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the culmination of another successful and exciting year in football and netball, everyone involved is to be congratulated.

The closeness of the competition kept us all on the edge of our seats. Who would have thought that after round 16 and Upwey sitting 6th and outside the top five they would go on and win the main one great effort by the Tiger’s and this reflects how even the competition was .

Our final series was down on last year and I suspect that having Upwey with 5 teams in the grand final did not help our crowd numbers. Well done to all the teams that won the ultimate goal and got to share what being involved in teams sports is all about. Thank you to all the host clubs that made the finals series what it was. The football continues to improve and get better as does the netball that has just continued to get bigger each year. The way that clubs have embraced the “Family Culture” that netball brings to the club has helped to reshape this league and we are all very thankful as it continues to give as a point of difference.

To our major sponsors and partners , thank you again for your continued belief in grass roots footy and your financial support which makes our competition one we can all be very proud of. To Mr Charles Exton of High Mountain Spring Water our lead sponsor and partner, thank you for your willingness to continue in that role and I personally look forward to a long and prosperous relationship between our two organizations. To all our other sponsors that show their commitment by way of ongoing support, I can only say thank you and I hope that the relationship is long and fruitful.

To the umpires led again by Dominic Kearney and John Edwards, gentlemen thank you for your efforts this year. Increased numbers of our umpires can only continue to improve our competition and I hope that this successful year is just another stepping stone for further increases and improvement across the board.

The challenge of our Under 18 competition is still a major focus for us and the use of the overage permit players has again helped us to support this important part of league. The year ahead will throw up more challenges as we monitor the effect of a change in age bracket of our major competitor’s.

We ran our third year of the Certificate III in sports administration and a change of supplier in Upper Yarra Community House, to give a more local feel which was well supported again by the clubs.

We followed up last year’s first time ever trifecta of Interleague wins on the road, with a trifecta of wins at home. We played the senior game under lights at Woori and their win capped off another great day for our league. To our interleague coaches in Mark Sandilands, Vin Dunstan and Kate Upton thanks for helping as we continue to build on this very important facet of the league which allows us to show case what we can do. Hopefully we can continue to get the support from all players and clubs so that we go with the best the Yarra Valley and Mountain District can offer.

We again had the big screen at the 1st Division Grand Final for those magic moment replays as well as a chance to thank some sponsors. All reports were that we got the thumbs up and it helped with the showcasing of the day. In a first for us the Grand Final was uploaded on the day to our “Valley Vision” site for viewing by those that could not make the day.

This was our first full year of “Valley Vision” for replays of football and netball onto the web to be viewed by anyone at anytime via their PC. The taping of all senior 1st and 2nd Division games along with a half of the netball was a bigger job than what we expected, but it could not have happened without the involvement and commitment of Mr Jason Sach who managed and controlled the whole process. Jason was also personally responsible for the taping of our own local weekly football show on a Monday night so his performance was outstanding and I can’t thank him enough. It is commitment like this that will continue to promote and advertise our very successful football and netball competitions.

Sadly, we saw Thornton-Eildon needing to have a year off to re gather themselves and try and get the club back on track, unfortunately for 2012 they have not succeeded. We wish them well in their endeavors.

To Leo, Tony and Ed who bring the footy to us each week through the radio as well as through the weekly footy show. Gentlemen you all continue to be a real asset for this league I can only personally thank you for all your efforts and time, and hope to hear you calling again next year.

The league presentation night continues to get better and bigger and this year was no exception with over 285 guests in attendance. Thanks to Sandy Roberts for hosting again and congratulations to all award winners.

To our office staff Steve Walter, Judy Orren and Stacey Cooper who bring it all together for us and are the main contact points for the clubs. An outstanding year and I cannot thank you enough for your time and care with the way you go about your business.

To my fellow board members who I have been honored to work with Leo Groenewegen my Vice President, Billy Heppell, Frank Moss , Mick Hill, Jodi Chandler, Rodney Woods and Mark Sandilands. Your commitment is nothing short of outstanding and helps to make our league one that we are all very proud of. The financial results that we share with the clubs tonight are directly related to your hard work and you can be justly very proud.

As this is my last report as president and also as a board member I would save my last thank you to my wife Beth who has supported me throughout my 11 years on the board and makes the sacrifices that allows me the time needed to do the job.

Graeme (Joey) Tuplin President.

Firstly, congratulations to our loyal band of volunteers right across our League. As a League, we are only as good as our clubs. The administration and leadership displayed by all clubs is proof of their express desire to deliver great value to their members. To all of the hardworking committees, your work is recognised and acknowledged and in partnership we deliver what is, I believe, an outstanding service to our community. As we are primarily driven by developing a winning culture, we do tend to measure our success by winning premierships. To all of our premiers, congratulations, you are officially recorded in our archives forever and a day. To the teams that missed out, there will always be another opportunity next season. Special mention should be made to Upwey Tecoma, to get 5 out of your seven teams into a grand final, and achieve success in three heralds a great club achievement, congratulations. Emerald’s success and the taking out of the A grade and senior division 2 premiership is a great reminder that no matter where you have ended up on the ladder in the season prior, you can turn it all around in the following season. Well done Emerald Football & Netball Club on an outstanding season.

Our organisation cannot be successful without the generous support of our sponsors. Our sponsors’ commitment to our sporting community is outstanding. Please make sure you acknowledge their support and where the opportunity presents, choose their products and services. High Mountain Spring Water and Charles Exton are dedicated supporters of our football & netball and I look forward to their continued strong support of local sport. Porter Davis Homes and Paul Wolff continue to impress with their loyalty to our League and U18 junior development. Darren Edwards and Sticks Yarra Valley commit every year to our netball competition which continues to go from strength to strength. Parkinson Asphalt Group has now become a core sponsor of our League; Adam Parkinson’s support is highly valued. The Upwey Community Bank Group once again has been brilliant in their support of our League and our Future Leaders Program, a

special thank you to Mike Fleming and his team for their strong commitment to our community. To Les King and YV Financial Services and Aaron Walter Barracuda Security, thank you for your support.

This season has seen a strategic alliance and partnership formed with Upper Yarra Community House. UYCH are now our official registered training partner. Sally Brennan and her team are as equally committed as our League in enriching our community and our partnership has the opportunity to generate significant benefit to both organisations.

Valley Vision has been a significant investment and we have achieved considerable success since our introduction at the end of last season. Jason Sach has been instrumental in achieving our goals. Our Valley Vision venture is only at an early development stage and I look forward to continually raising the bar and taking our operation to another level in 2012. Thank you Jason on an outstanding Valley Vision debut.

Interleague is an important part of our season, and once again, we have achieved great success. Mark Sandilands, Vin Dunstan and Kate Upton are outstanding coaches and their commitment is evidence of their belief in the concept and their belief in our League. Congratulations to all coaches and their support teams that make interleague a most enjoyable experience for all.

Our Saturday radio broadcast is an entrenched part of our operation, and to this end, the commitment to set up and broadcast every week is testament to the dedication of our broadcast team. Leo Groenewegen leads the team with distinction, but he cannot deliver without the outstanding support of Ed Summerfield and Tony Foo. Thank you guys, your delivery and efforts go far beyond what is required from volunteers. Our broadcast has been

extended to now include Yarra Valley FM, this coupled with our lead partner 3MDR has ensured significant geographic coverage of our competition. Our radio stations continue to get great support from our interstate and overseas web stream listeners. What makes it a pleasure to work with our clubs is the commitment to activities outside of playing. Adoption of the Defibrillator Programme by all clubs once again is a wonderful indicator of the importance clubs place on community health and well being. Further to this community achievement, clubs fully support the Future Leaders Program which has gainfully employed almost 100 of young club members in a traineeship capacity over the last 3 years. All trainees will have achieved a certificate III or IV in sport & recreation. This season has also seen our League sponsor and support the Road Trauma Information Program for young drivers. As we all know this is an important and ongoing education challenge. We can’t afford to take our eye of the ball.

Umpires are an essential ingredient in achieving our success and I am pleased to advise that once again we have continued our record growth in umpire numbers. Our growth can be attributed to the hard work of John Edwards who has been instrumental in our umpire resurgence. Our Umpire Director, Dom Kearney has led our umpire group with commitment for the past 3 years and on behalf of the League, I would like to congratulate and thank Dom for his efforts during this time and wish him well in his next umpiring endeavour.

Another band of volunteers who go unnoticed, unless of course you have misbehaved, is our Tribunal members. Our tribunal members are committed to our League and are regularly called upon and always perform in a professional manner. To our Chairmen and members, Greg Black, Gary Tippett, Matthew Tippett, Fury DiPietro, Keith Thompson, Theo Skordilis and Harold Bromley...thank you for a great job.

Netball has well and truly taken off and next season’s move to four grades is testament to the fact that clubs have truly embraced netball. To this end, for the past few years we have had the assistance of Kate Upton who has helped get clubs and teams focussed on core training and developmental skills. Well done Kate, not just for your efforts with clubs but also with your support and dedication to betterment of netball in our League.

This season also saw the introduction of Sport’s Chaplaincy. The Salvation Army and Mr Graeme Mawson are to be congratulated for their support of our sporting community.

A special thank you to Judy Orren and Stacey Cooper who regularly commit to the most unusual of working hours to ensure we get the job done to the best of our ability, thank you to you both for your efforts this season.

Our success is not possible without the dedicated efforts of our Board members; Graeme Tuplin, Leo Groenewegen, Jodi Chandler, Bill Heppell, Mick Hill, Mark Sandilands, Rodney Woods and Frank Moss. I would like to thank all of the Directors for their support and a special thank you to Frank Moss who is stepping down this season.

This season sees the retirement of Graeme Tuplin, 11 continuous years as Director with 5 as President. Graeme has without doubt demonstrated his unswerving commitment to the welfare of our League. Graeme has been instrumental in embracing change and his passion is one of the primary reasons why our League is as highly regarded as it is across all football and netball levels. Graeme is also a Life Member, so although it is somewhat disappointing that Graeme is moving on, there is no doubt that his contribution over many years has left a very positive and everlasting legacy. Congratulations Graeme on your commitment to our League and I wish you every success with your next venture.

I would also like to thank my family for their support. A special thank you to my wife Jo-Anne, for her understanding and support. Also, I would like to thank Aaron for his commitment and hard work at finals time.

All in all, another solid season from all aspects. Our success is due to the commitment of all who partake in our great sports of football and netball; whether that be playing, umpiring, spectating or volunteering. Our family values are continually enhanced and to that end, I believe we can confidently say that we all together, deliver an outstanding service to the young athletes and families of our community.

This season has seen another solid financial performance. Financial reports are available on the following pages. The Board have approved a rebate of $25,000 which will be allocated to clubs who have achieved the sales threshold of $8,000. Rebates only apply to all qualifying sales up to and including the date of the last home & away game in season 2011. Fourteen clubs have qualified and the rebate amounts and sales ladders are included in the attached tables.

Our financial performance is down on last season (operating surplus down $45.5k to $64.9k) in part due to our investment in Valley Vision and the video coverage and production of all senior football and A grade netball games. Complementary to this initiative, we have also established a football netball show which we hope will further enhance our services. There will be a review of our Valley Vision operation to ensure we meet our objectives in a financially responsibly fashion.

Our income has improved slightly, even though we are down two mainstream football netball clubs. We are further enhancing our training opportunities and income streams in partnership with the Upper Yarra Community House and our income has been further assisted with the charging of a service fee to the Ellinbank Football Netball League whereby we both established and produced their football record for the 2011 season.

There has been a $10,000 write off included in the 2011 accounts as a result of The Irrigation Shed not fulfilling their sponsorship obligations. The Irrigation Shed has been placed under administration. Work is underway to secure a major sponsorship / partnership for the 2012 season.

An agreement has been reached with the Yarra Ranges Shire which has resulted in approximately $20,000 being paid to the Shire this season. This expense was partly offset by a reduction in finals reimbursements and record sales during finals.

The League’s cash position is strong with government grants of $95,000 due over January and February 2012. This amount accounts for approximately 45% of Receivables. Receivables also include outstanding sponsorship payments of approximately $50,000 and $40,000 owing from clubs for the Defibrillator Program. The League has no outstanding trade creditors.

Our finals gate takings are in line with the 2010 season even though the Division One grand final takings were down considerably. Further finals information is in the attached tables.

The Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated has determined that it is impracticable to establish complete control over the collection of cash transactions prior to entry into its financial records. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding revenue from this source was limited, our audit procedures with respect to finals income had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. We therefore are unable to express an opinion whether the finals income the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated obtained are complete.

Qualified Audit Opinion

In our opinion, except for the effects on the financial report of such adjustments, if any, as might have been required had the limitation on our audit procedures referred to in the qualification paragraph not existed, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated as at 31st October 2011, and its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act [Victoria]. Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution Without modifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act [Victoria]. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose.

We hosted Wimmera FL on the 28th May with the best athletes in our League representing senior and under 18 football. Two outstanding teams saw the Yarra Valley win both WorkSafe Cups with the under 18 team setting the scene with a resounding victory at the Woori Yallock Football Ground.

With this match being the first on the day at 2.50pm, the Yarra Valley boys started off the match strongly and never looked back, kicking 9 goals to Wimmera’s 2, giving the home side a healthy lead that would never deviate. The home side back this up with another strong quarter of footy, only allowing Wimmera to score one more goal whilst they kicked another 8. Never did the Yarra Valley look like losing, and the continued pressure around the ground never faulted as the two teams went into each break; Warburton Millgrove’s Jason Coghlan kicked an outstanding 9 goals as he proved to be the home side’s main target up forward, and none of his opponents were able to stop him.

The third quarter saw the Yarra Valley kick another 10 goals, blowing their lead out to over 20 goals against a hapless Wimmera; the Yarra Valley’s backline were able to hold their own against their opponents, as they kept the visiting team to only 14 goals for the match. The final quarter saw Wimmera kick 7 goals (half their final score), with this being the only quarter they won, for the Yarra Valley kicked 6 goals in comparison, but the lead was already enough; 33.20 to 14.7.

Healesville’s Dylan Anderson (2 goals), Warburton Millgrove’s Jason Coghlan (9 goals), Alexandra’s Bart Wallace (3 goals), Yea’s Jai Robinson (2 goals), Woori Yallock’s Jake Matthews (2 goals) and Seville’s Ben Abbruzzese (1 goal) were judged best for the Yarra Valley in their massive win over Wimmera.

Under 18 coach Vin Dunstan was impressed with the commitment of the players.

The game kicked off at 5.30pm at Woori Yallock, and right from the beginning you could tell this match was going to be a close one, with no clear winner until the final moments of the game. Wimmera came to the Yarra Valley looking for a win, but the pressure exerted by the home side only gave the visiting team a one goal lead at quarter time, though the Yarra Valley’s midfield was not accountable early and put pressure on their backline. Wimmera led at every break, but what they didn’t count on was that the home side’s ball use improved as the game wore on and their final quarter pressure helped to get them over the line.

Despite lacking mobility in height in the backline, the boys managed to stand up well against their taller opponents, and although they had more scoring shots but not being able to finish, the inaccuracy in front of goal helped the Yarra Valley for in the final quarter, the six more scoring shots proved to be the biggest difference when the final siren sounded.

Wandin’s Jarrod Bayliss (1 goal) was awarded the VCFL medal for best on ground, and Mount Evelyn’s James Charge, Emerald’s Josh Taylor (2 goals), Mount Evelyn’s Michael Smith (2 goals), Wandin’s Simon Young (3 goals) and Healesville’s Luke Barclay were among the Yarra Valley’s best in their close win over Wimmera.

Yarra Valley has now won their last four Interleague matches in both 18s and seniors and will be playing Central Murray in 2012.

We had a very successful interleague experience this year right from the start. We had a great turn out to both try-outs, with good numbers representing both divisions.

The talent within the league is getting better and stronger each year, and the most exciting thing is that the up and coming talent is young, raw girls we can really work with and develop.

After try-outs we selected a squad of 12 girls, all the girls very eager to learn and work together to produce the best to date Interleague team to take the court.

The final squad was made up of:

Nikki Argoon – Emerald

Sam Coller – Emerald

Rachel Hickey – Mt Evelyn

Sarah Hogan – Mt Evelyn

Jessica Jones – Mt Evelyn

Jaime Lord – Warburton Millgrove

Courtney McDonald – Wandin

Kathleen McMahon – Wandin

Nikki Phillips – Wandin

The first half proved to have small margins between the two sides, but the Yarra Valley were working much harder than their

opposition and even though there was considerable height difference between Wimmera’s goallers and the Yarra Valley’s defenders, the home side were still able to get on top with welltimed rebounding of the few goals that were missed and welltimed intercepts.

The second half of the match was when the Yarra Valley kicked things into gear, and Wimmera simply couldn’t keep up. The passages of play from the centre third to the goal third were fantastic to watch, especially when Mount Evelyn’s Sarah Hogan and Ella Priestley linked up, and the defenders in Emerald’s Sam Coller and Wandin’s Kathleen McMahon. Mount Evelyn’s Jessica Jones was very accurate when shooting for goal, as was Mount Evelyn’s Rachel Hickey.

By the end of the match the Yarra Valley won quite convincingly, with Mount Evelyn’s Ella Priestley, Warburton Millgrove’s Jaime Lord, Mount Evelyn’s Sarah Hogan, Emerald’s Sam Coller, Mount Evelyn’s Jessica Jones and Wandin’s Kathleen McMahon being amongst the best.

These girls realise the importance of the team game, they play for each other and played to get the best possible result for the league. We as a league should be so proud of their efforts at Interleague, but not only that, we should be so excited that we have such elite netballers wanting to play, represent our area, and strengthen our competition.

Season 2011 once again presented an interesting challenge for umpiring in the Yarra Valley.

Our ambition was to have enough umpires on our panel so as to not put pressure on the Clubs by asking them to provide their own field umpires in Reserves games. This was able to be achieved from day one and gave us a sound launching pad for the rest of the season.

Congratulations to all umpires who umpired Grand Finals. Their appointments were earned and their performances in the games justified their selection. Thanks also to the remainder of the panel who may not have achieved a grand final but proved their loyalty to our League.

While we do not have a great number of young field umpires, our older brigade are very consistent and they display great loyalty to the YVMDFNL.

The boundary umpires go to the other extreme and are in the main a young group. The difficulty is to get them to train as a group on a regular basis. The League suggested that four boundary umpires be used in all Grand Finals and this proved to be a very successful initiative by the League adding to the image of the games.

Our goal umpires are a very reliable group and it is looking good for the future to see such young talent coming through the ranks.

Recruitment of course is always an issue and in the future there needs to be more support shown to provide a career path for young umpires coming through the juniors. To make it to senior football and beyond, the young umpires need to be encouraged to umpire on Saturdays in senior football.

Training venues for the senior and junior groups will always be a contentious issue. The senior group train at Knox Athletics Track and are fortunate to have one of the best facilities of any umpiring group in the State. The juniors train at Seville and during the winter months have to endure some poor conditions for training.

It is acknowledged that the distance factor is a problem for the young umpires who do not drive and have to rely on transport from their parents. There is however a need for the young umpires to get too senior training at Knox whenever possible to receive specialised tuition from the senior Coaches.

Clubs can also help in recruitment of umpires as there surely must be some players who have retired and would be able to take up the whistle.

We were not in a position this year to recommend any of our umpires to the VFL for trial but I would expect we will have some young umpires to take that step after season 2012. The VCFL have invited 24 of our field, boundary and goal umpires to be part of the V/Line Umpiring Academy for 2012.

It was indeed interesting when the coach of Olinda Ferny Creek, Mick Scott, actually took our umpires for training one night during

season. This

and football Clubs can only be of benefit to our League.

Congratulations to the recipients of the special umpiring awards in 2011. Andrew Marshall was the Umpire of the Year and was awarded the John Edwards Medal struck by the League.

The best Field Umpire was Jason McNiece, Rod O’Brien was the best Boundary Umpire and Andrew Marshall won the best Goal Umpire trophy. The Golden Whistle trophy went to a young Goal Umpire, Ron Sandfort, and the best Finals Umpire was won by Jason Newman.

Many thanks to members of the Umpires Board for their efforts throughout the season namely Dom Kearney, the Director of Umpiring, Trevor McGary as the Fitness Coach and Field Umpires Observer and Wayne Pasco also as Field Umpires Observer. The League is very fortunate to also have Brad Scicluna as the Boundary Coach and Bob Allen as the Goal Coach as both of these gentlemen are extremely loyal Yarra Valley servants.

Well done also to the Umpires Association under the Presidency of Tony Cross. Tony and his Executive have been able to get their Association back on a firm footing which augurs well for the future of umpiring in the YVMDFNL.

In closing, I would like to sincerely thank the League President, Graeme Tuplin, and the League Chief Executive Officer, Steve Walter, for their total support to umpiring. I have been involved in football umpiring for 40 years in various competitions and Graeme and Steve would be the two best operators I have encountered in that time.

Thanks also to Judy and Stacey in the League office for their friendly manner and total cooperation.
