PREVIEW

VAll is set for a mouth watering contest between the two best sides all year. The head to head form tells us it really is anyone’s game; with Seville disposing of Gembrook in R4, Gembrook winning by the slimmest of margins in R11 and Gembrook with a convincing win over Seville in R18. The semi final result shows reasonably healthy margin to Seville, however it was a tight game until to the end, with Gembrook leading at 3QT and only managing a behind in the final quarter. Both teams have stars aplenty, both dominating the Div 1 Team of the Year, with 4 Brookers and 6 Seville players in the 22. Key goal scorers for Gembrook are Myles Wareham(FF team of the year), who averages 4 goals a game with 68 star Michael Firrito (23 disposal average) averaging a tick over 3 goals per game (48) and Jay Verhagen who has 41 goals to his name.

For Seville the goals are more spread out, with Domenic Aloi (38), Petracca (34) @ 2 per game and Dylan Broadway (31) @2.5 per Whilstgame. other key players to look out for either team are: Brayden Weller (HBF in team of the year), averaging 29.4 disposals and top 4 for rebound 50s. Gun Josh Tilly (Wing in team of the year) averages 27.7 disposals, 8.3 inside 50s and 7 clearances (all elite rankings), Damian Volta averages 31 disposals, whilst Aaron Firrito averages 25 disposals with 7 rebound 50s and inside 50s.

For Seville Deng Nai(ruck in team of the year) averages 41.8 hitouts(12 to advantage) (2nd in the comp) will be pivotal, as will Jake Strachan (centre in team of the year) who finds the ball 28 times a match (14 contested) and Jack Nolan (CHB in team of the year) who rates elite for intercept marks (4.8) and contested marks (3.1) from 21 disposals per game. Rover for the team of the year is Josh Weightman who averages 32.8 touches a game (8.5 contested), with 7 clearances and 7 inside 50s to his name too, whilst Jye Sciortino (back pocket in team of the year) averages 8 rebounds and 23 disposals (both elite rankings). Seville average an extra 10 points per game and concede 13 points per game less than Gembrook, having averaged 111 points per game during the H&A season, reaching the ton on no less than nine occasions, whilst Gembrook achieved this 10 times, after having a shaky start to the season.

Myles Wareham and Michael Firrito will need their kicking boots on if they are to beat Seville, both having kicked 4 goals last time the two teams met, however the Brookers can’t afford a last quarter fadeout again. Will the week off for Seville give them the edge? This is one is a real flip of the coin.

Quote from Seville’s Coach Chris Murphy

“Been a long year, 21 rounds to keep up and about, we have had our highs and lows but now the time has come, the boys are ready now for the ultimate prize”

“We have had a good year and many accomplishments in our club in 2022 but Friday is all that matters for our 3 teams that are in the grand final. In the seniors we are 2 wins and 2 losses against Seville this year so it’s anyone’s game. We know Seville are fierce competitors and we know what we get each time we play them as we have had a rivalry for some time now. All we can do is make sure our preparation puts us in the best position to win.”

PREVIEW

Berwick Springs have clearly been the best team for the season, however Gembrook has had the better of them in two of the three encounters between the two. None of three matches were close, in what seems as an unusual head to head record given their respective ladder positions.

Gembrook know how to beat Berwick Springs and will likely back themselves in. They did finish four less wins for the year, however Gembrook did well to finish 4th give they started the season poorly and only lost three H&A games since their round 7 loss to Berwick Springs. Having said that Berwick Springs average an extra 16 points a game and concede 13 points less per game than the Brookers.

Up forward for Berwick Springs the dangerous Jaxon Knight (31 goals from 11 games) looms as a big threat for the Gembrook defence, as does Ethan Domato (29 from 13) and Braydn Hoewl (28 off 11) For Gembrook the damage will be inflicted by Mitchell Brown (20 from 10), Luke Waddell (19 from 18) and Nick Jackson (15 from Other18).key

players for Berwick include: Kai Maas, Brayden Follett, Jackson McCallum, Lucas Smith and Matt Connelly. Other important Gembrook players include: Kyle Humphrey, Jesse Busacca, William Burchill and Jake O’Sullivan. Berwick Springs are highscoring team and Gembrook will need to control possession to deny Berwick’s forward opportunities. They did this well the last two times these teams met. Shutting down Jaxon Knight, Braydn Hoewell and Ethan Domato will also be crucial. However for Berwick Springs to stop Gembrook, they need a well rounded defensive effort as Gembrook spread their goals amongst many, with no player of theirs kicking constant bags.

Can Gembrook continue their strong form into the Grand Final and snatch the flag off Berwick Springs? Berwick Springs have been the best team all season but can they now be the best when it counts?

Quote from Berwick Springs Coach Wayne Webster

“'We're both lucky and excited to be playing in a Grand Final this Friday. It's a great achievement for our new Club and we just want to give a good account of ourselves. Good luck to all other competing sides.”

Quote from Gembrook Cockatoo’s Coach Vince Del Nigro

“What a wonderful result we have achieved from the Brookers reserves this home and away season. A commendable effort to all the boys, team, staff, club, for riding through the adversities thrown at us right from the start. Considering we had injuries, no home club facilities, playing away for most of the season; the commitment, achievement and moral from everybody involved is a great testament to us being in the grand final on Friday. We look forward to playing Berwick Springs again, one of the best teams in this division. We hope for a terrific game of footy. Let’s go Brookers!!!”

PREVIEW

VWith two wins each and plenty of quality on both sides, this should be a belter of a Grand Final. The semi final saw Berwick win reasonably comfortably after they ran away from Seville in the last quarter after a reasonably tight first three quarters Throughout the H&A season Berwick were marginally more damaging on the scoreboard, averaging an extra goals a game, however they conceded an impressive 9 less goals per game than Seville. This is mainly thanks to gun (GK) Danielle Hanley who had an outstanding season. Other stars for Berwick have been Emma Clarke and Emma Pupuke (team of the year) as GS and GA, whilst co captain Olivia Macente (team of the year) has been excellent in the centre. Melissa Webster (GD) and Hayley Stewart (WA) have also enjoyed solid seasons Berwick. Seville’s best has been Cleo Minney (team of the year) (C), Ella Bayliss (team of the year)(WA) and the combo of Hayley Ray (GS) and Ella Morse (GA). Emily Wicks (WD) has been influential as has Luiza Sulemani (GK). Luiza Sulemani on Emma Clarke promises to be an enthralling matchup as does Danielle Hanley on Hayley Ray. Will Seville be too strong in the middle Minney, Bayliss and Wicks or will the firepower of Clarke and Pupuke be too much for them to handle?

“Berwick A grade are coming off the back of a huge home and away season and it’s been so exciting to watch us work together and put out some brilliant netball! Our senior netball squad set out with the intention of all 4 teams in the grand final and we were so close to that target with B and D grade joining us for their grand finals. It’s been an incredibly long time since a Berwick A grade team have made a grand final so it’s going to be a pretty special day. We’re ready for another fierce battle with Seville we’ve created a nice rivalry with them this season and we can’t wait for the final fight. My girls have worked incredibly hard this season and we’re ready to reap the rewards. It has been a huge privilege to coach this playing group and work alongside my captains Olivia and Emma. We’re ready to soak up grand final day and celebrate with our club all the achievements and milestones we have reached this year, regardless of the final outcomes. Hopefully we’ll be celebrating with flags in our hands. Go Wickers!”

Quote from Seville’s Coach Alex Bergamin

“What a year for our girls. Hurdles were met with determination and excitement which in turn rewards the group with a grand final spot. Physical and mental preparation has been at the forefront of our planning which I think will put us in good stead to perform come Friday. Berwick have been the challenge all year for us and we look forward to bringing our specific brand of connection to the court this Friday.”

PREVIEW

V 23rdThe winner of this Grand Final is unpredictable, what is predictable is that will be going down to the wire. Both teams have slaughtered opposition teams throughout the year and the chasing pack is well behind. Berwick have proved slightly superior in defence this year but not by much, they have more than double the goals for than against, whilst Seville have come close to achieving this impressive feat. Berwick’s Darcy Utber (611 goals will cause headaches up forward, as could the combination of Nicole Westmorland (371) and Brooke Abu Jaber (188). There other star players are led by Hayley Alman, Holly Moulday, Amanda Baker and Caitlin Anthony, whilst Elliot Santamaria, Jessica Pastras and Maddison Wrench have had solid seasons. Berwick will need to keep the ball out of Alanna Lennie (416) and Lauren Fletcher’s (385) hands, whilst Cailey Nolan will look to impact the scoreboard also.

Other dominant Seville players are Alexis Tucker, Gabrielle Duncan and Mandy Bell. Both teams have very strong starting 7s with solid interchanges. Neither of these two teams have lost to anyone else this year and there’s a reason why; either of these two would be worthy

Canwinners.Darcy

Utber be stopped? Do Berwick have an answer for Alexis Tucker? Will Hayley Alman be too dominant for Seville? The winner here is anyone’s guess.

Quote from Berwick’s Coach Lani Mannays

“Berwick B grade have had a great season off and on the court, we have really come together as a team, and it shows as we all turn up for each other. This season means so much to us for so many reasons and we are going to leave nothing on the court at the end of the day. We have a great mix of youth, maturity and belief in how far we have come, it’s been my privilege to coach them. We are looking forward to another great battle with Seville, going in on even terms with 2 wins each over the season. Berwick netball club came into Division 1 with a goal to get all of our senior teams into finals and we nearly accomplished that, having 3 senior teams out of 4 going into the Grand Final, this is a testament to how much we have all worked together as a squad, Friday will be a great day for our whole club regardless of the outcomes, time for all of our players, coaches & supporters to celebrate what has already been an epic year, hopefully topped off with some flags. Let’s Go Wickers!!”

Quote from Seville’s Coach Alex Bergamin

“A diverse and extremely talented group of girls who have really culminated a team moral unmatched. We know exactly what it’s going to take to bring home a premiership with experienced campaigners sprinkled throughout the team. The challenge has been set and we will rise to the occasion come Friday”

V 23rdSeville are looking to cap off a perfect season with a premiership, whilst Gembrook are looking to spoil the party. Three of Gembrook’s 5 losses during the H&A season came at the hands of Seville, which is no surprise given the firepower they have. Tarsha Collette (413 goals) and Rebecca Groen (252) are a formidable pair, meaning Leah Gill (GK) and Sally Rush (GD) for Gembrook have their work cut out. It’s a hard task however Gill and Rush have constantly have fought hard all season and constantly been amongst the best players. Emily Armstrong (22 goal average) and Anaya O’Neill (252 goals) will also prove an ominous threat for Seville. Other important players for Seville include: Georgie Brisbane, Laura Colosimo, Alice Nicholas and Courtney

TheCanning.semi

final was the closest encounter between the two, with Gembrook needing to improve even on that if they are upset Seville. Seville look a touch better; Gembrook could challenge but will need to be at their very best to win.

Quote from Seville’s Coach Alex Bergamin

“These girls have really solidified themselves as strong contenders this season, having built steadily throughout the year. With a mix of youth and experience the group are well and truly committed to the challenges of a grand final day! We are looking forward to putting ourselves against Gembrook and watching our talent shine.”

Quote from Gembrook Cockatoo’s Coach Mickey U’Ren

“C Grade has had a fantastic year. From a strong pre season to finishing second on the ladder. We have continued to learn and grow as a team throughout the year. Our commitment to each other and playing quality netball has seen us earn a well deserved spot in the C Grade Grand final. It will be a hard fought game against Seville, I don’t think we have played our best netball yet but the Brookers will bring that on Friday.”

PREVIEW

VUndefeated teams often seem an obvious pick for a premiership, however three of the four times these two teams faced off, the game went right down to the wire. Perhaps Berwick hold a mental edge. Berwick have multiple scoring options with Emily Walden and Shannon Westwell rotating as GS, with Katie MacDonnell starting GA with Emily Potter also a proven goal scorer. Standout players for Berwick are Jaimee Adema (WA), Dehansa Herath (GD) and Casey Phillips (C), whilst Seville’s players to look out for are Hannah Ray (GS), Jayde Rait (captain), Sue Tucker and Tahla Gibbs. Kayla Gossip, Mollie McMahon and Corrine Tesselaar also had solid seasons. Berwick have proven to be the best side this year and haven’t dropped a game. If anyone is to beat them, it’s Berwick. Do all good things come to an end?

Quote from Berwick’s Coach Karen Eduati

“'What a season we have had! Finishing not only on top of the ladder, but also undefeated is an amazing achievement for the girls. They have shown grit and determination each week and I’m sure the Grand Final will be no different. We envisage the grand final will be a hard fought game, given that Seville have always pushed us to play our very best. We are ready for the challenge. I’m so proud of each and every one of our girls, they are an awesome bunch to play with and to coach! Let’s bring home the flag Wickers!”

Quote from Seville’s Coach Alex Bergamin

“It’s been a long time coming for these girls to make a grand final day. With a real mix up of player experience, grit and determination we’ll be looking to capitalise on every opportunity come Friday. With the score line shortening every time we’ve battled it out with Berwick, we will be bringing our best netball come first whistle.”

PREMIER FINAL REVIEWS

A Grade Netball

Heart stopper finish in match of the year, in the pouring rain. Olinda Ferny Creek have pulled off a remarkable victory in extra time, coming in as underdogs, as what will go down as one of the best games of the season. Both teams were stacked with talent, which is no doubt the reason this game went down to the wire.

OFC took the lead just a couple of minutes in and held the lead for much of the rest of the contest. They lead by as much as 5 goals at one stage, however Narre Warren kept coming; with both teams on the end of momentum swings. Some of the standouts for Narre Warren were star GS Erin Bell who was fantastic all match, especially the second half, star centre Brittany Mashado’s passing was elite, as was Abbey Berrientos’ passing, whilst Gabrielle Dwyer was sound in Whilstdefence.for the victors, some of the standout players were; Christa Tomlinson in the centre (BOC), star GS Hayley Howard, especially in the first three quarters, Taylah Werner was fantastic in goal attack, Brodie Smith’s defensive efforts were crucial, whilst Brownyn Simpson’s (GK) first half was outstanding. Madison Taylor and Alice Paget were clean with the ball, providing clear a path forward.

Quarter by quarter

Erin Bell opened Narre’s account within the first 30 seconds to which a prompt reply came from OFC, through Taylah Werner. The next few minutes was dominated by OFC, who took a 4 1 lead, thanks to great defensive efforts by Simpson, clean passing from Tomlinson and Werner and precision shooting from Hayley Howard. The remainder of the quarter was tit for tat, Bell’s shooting matching that of Howard’s from there on in. OFC take an 11 8 lead into quarter time. Berrientos, Mashado and Tonna all making great plays for Narre, whilst Howard and Simpson have been superb for OFC. The second quarter was quite a different story with Narre showing why they finished top of the table. They looked the better of the two sides, with much of the quarter being dominated by them. Erin Bell was great once again, as was Chelsea Tonna. Narre were much cleaner than in the first quarter and if it weren’t for a few brilliant defensive efforts from Brodie Smith, Narre would have been infront at half time. Every time Narre looked like levelling the scores, OFC would have an answer. OFC holding on to their lead half time 22 20 At half time, Narre made an interchange with Osborne coming on as WD, Berrientos, moving C, Mashado to WA and Maund off.

OFC got off to a strong start, although Narre weren’t making things easy. Gabrielle Dwyer had her way, shutting down Howard for a while, ensuring Narre tightened the scores again, Narre drew within one goal, until a series of errors by Narre saw both Howard and Werner steady the ship for OFC who took a 32 29 lead into 3QT. Whilst OFC hold a 4 goal advantage, Narre Warren look dangerous and won’t die wondering. The final quarter was a saw Erin Bell score two early goals for Narre, putting them within just one goal of OFC. A few gettable shots for OFC went begging, combined with solid defence from Dwyer and Emery, saw a halt to the scoring of OFC. Tonna, Mashado and Berrientos were creative, as was Jemma Osbourne (WD), creating an avenue for Bell to put through her third in a row; levelling the scores.

OFC were in dire need of a goal and Taylah Werner provided one, before a tense few minutes saw both teams go without a score for a solid chunk of time before Bell levelled the scores again at 33 33. It wasn’t long until another clean passage of play by Narre saw Bell put through yet another one, pinching the lead for the first time since the opening two minutes. Werner hit back for OFC after some elite passing from Tomlinson, with an impressive goal, levelling the scores before Bell answered back. Howard re found her accuracy at a much needed time, OFC leading by 1 with not much time left. Some heavy rain had arrived and Bell shot yet another goal, levelling the scores. Bell and Howard traded blows again until Bell shot one more. Milliseconds before the final buzzer Bell came agonisingly close to pinching victory for Narre as the game was forced into extra time! (36 apiece).

The first half of extra time saw Narre take a point lead. Some class from Taylah Werner saw OFC regain the lead and skip out to a two goal lead and OFC scored five of the next seven. Narre Warren scored once more but they ran out of time as OFC claim a famous victory to clinch the A Grade Premier Division Premiership! 44 43

Going to extra time showed there was nothing really separating these two teams. OFC were composed that one or two extra times when it mattered and will be celebrating this inspirational win, long and hard.

Senior Football

Narre Warren win another flag, after a great comeback in the wet.

Narre looked the stronger of the two sides in the opening minutes, kicking the opening goal, however Woori took control kicking the next three. Narre fought back hard in the second, narrowing the margin to a goal at the major break before further tightening the screws, only finding themselves down by two points at three quarter time. Halfway through the 4th, the scores were all tied up at 58 apiece before league bnf Richardson put Narre up by 7, not long after, they were up by 13 and Woori had too much work to with not enough time left.

Some of the best players for Woori were: Jak Ryan (3 goals), Liam Odea and Kody Bisoli. Whilst for the Narre, Hayden Stagg (best on) was fantastic, as was Josh Tonna, high flying Will Howe and Riley Siwes.

Quarter by quarter

Narre were strong early in a bit of a scrap (understandable given the thunderstorms (and hail half an hour prior), kicking the first goal through Jarrod Smith. Jak Ryan provided the quick response for Woori before the next 10 or so minutes was a real arm wrestle. Both teams were struggling to be clean inside 50, not helped by the weather, until Jak Ryan managed a second goal, off the deck from about three metres out, before their skipper Kody Busoli added one of his own. Woori missed a few gettable shots on goal, including one following an absolute screamer from Bradd Arnold. Woori managed to assert some dominance late in the quarter and could easily be up by more. Woori lead 3.5 23 to 1.2 8

Less than two minutes into the second quarter Will Howe takes a lovely mark and slots his first of the afternoon, a goal that was much needed for Narre. Unfortunately for them Woori’s star mid Liam Odea responded just a minute later, with some superb candy selling, taking on a few opponents, before snapping a nice goal across the body. Not long after, Liam Odea was involved yet again, this time off half back unfortunately turning it over, after attempting a bullet pass. Tom Toner for Narre makes him pay full price as he slams one home from long range, with Narre well and truly in the game now, finding themselves just five points adrift. The last few minutes of the half was saw no real dominance from either team, with Woori managing another behind. Half time scores see Woori 4.6 30 lead 3.6 24. Early in the third, Bradd Arnold had the chance to kick one for Woori, however that wasn’t to be, it mattered not as Jak Ryan soccered another off the deck, kicking his third goal, giving Woori a two goal buffer. A few minutes later Kody Busoli (captain) slammed his second goal home, from 40 metres out; giving Woori some breathing space. An opportunist snap around the body from Tom Toner kept Narre in the contest. Woori looked to pile hurt on Narre, failing to do so as they peppered the goal face. Robert Allen who had been resolute in defence, took another ripping intercept mark setting up Baylin Spencer who also failed to convert. Woori were dominating play for much of the third without full reward. One more time Woori had a crack at goal and it seemed to many that they had kicked one, until the goal umpire, nearest boundary umpire and field umpire required a discussion on whether it was touched on the line or not. The benefit of the doubt was given to Narre’s defence. It seemed to not matter much as Woori turned it into the old ‘seven point play’. Narre had found themselves 21 points a drift and on the rocks. Thanks to Jarrod Smith and Wille Howe, Narre kicked two goals in a minute, cutting the margin back to a manageable nine points, before Richardson took a nice mark on the eve of three quarter time, soluting from 15m out directly infront, setting up for an absolute nailbiter. Woori lead 7.9 51 to 7.7 49

The final quarter took three and a half minutes to see a score from either team as both teams were feeling the nerves. Woori came o so close to landing the first punch, missing by a matter of centimetres. A coast to coast goal of the boot of Siwes made Woori pay as Narre put their noses infront. Jude Hay wasn’t going to let Narre have the lead for long as he grabbed the lead back with a nice goal. Half way through the final quarter and scores were tied at 8.10 each before Narre managed a behind. Enter Jake Richardson, showing why he’s the league’s bnf, kicking his second goal, giving Narre a seven point buffer. Narre had a few more forays forward, managing a handful of behinds, that see them lead by 13. That’s a margin which is certainly manageable given momentum swings seen this afternoon, however Woori struggled to use the ball late and didn’t muster a score in the last 15 minutes of the game. Narre Warren are Premiers! Winning 9.18 to 8.10

Head-to-Head Ladders Explained

Following two years of interruptions and cancellations due to Covid 19, Outer East FN has implemented a new tie breaker system for all competitions in 2022.

As outlined at the beginning of the season in the Outer East Football Netball 2022 COVID Specific Competition Interruption by Laws, we have engaged the Ladder setup which has been used in our junior competitions since 2019, and other football competitions prior to that.

Instead of using Percentage as the Tie Breaker for teams who find themselves either equal on the ladder in points or match ratio, we will be using the Head to Head system in ALL Outer East Football and Netball competitions in season 2022.

The purpose of this was to minimise disruptions from Covid, be those round cancellations, forfeits or weakened teams. The purpose of this change is to encourage all teams to “prioritise playing over results” and minimise the impact of covid interruptions to that fixture only.

Specifically, the aims are:

If games are cancelled due to covid and fixtures become inequitable, results of head to head games of teams competing for finals places or relegation take priority. Minimise the impact of covid, including sides being impacted by unavailability’s, which would potentially skew percentage and ladder position.

Promote clubs playing instead of forfeiting, with margins now not impacting overall seasons, simply the head to head record of the two opponents against each other. Not every club has returned in the same shape as they were pre covid. The removal of percentage takes away the need for clubs to beat opposition by margins. Instead, now a win will suffice. This allowed the restructure for Div 2 to occur earlier in the year as results/Head to head could be used and no concerns of carrying percentage across from previous games.

How this system is calculated:

Ladder Tie Breaker Process

• Finishing positions will be deemed a tie where; Two or more sides finish on the same amount of match points or, Two or more sides finish on the same Match Ratio (Games won/Games Played x100).

Two Team Tie

1. Win Loss record of head to head competition between the two teams.

2. Greatest winning margin in games played between two teams.

3. Most Goals in games played between two teams.

4. Win Loss record vs. Highest ranked common opponent (Proceeding downwards if necessary).

5. Aggregate margin vs. Highest ranked common opponent.

Three Team Tie (or more)

The following procedure will be used in the following order until the tie is broken:

1. Best winning percentage of games played among the tied teams.

2. Greatest winning margin in games played between teams.

3. Win Loss record vs. Highest ranked common opponent (Proceeding downwards if necessary).

4. Aggregate margin vs. Highest ranked common opponent.

TheNotes:ladders

in PlayHQ may show teams on the same points/match ratio in the incorrect positions.

The OEFN will, in its best endeavours, ensure its clubs are aware of the correct ladder positions as we approach the finals series.
