From the Chairman

Season 2022 is about to commence this week and on behalf of the new Outer East Football Netball Competitions Ltd, I would like to welcome back all. The past two seasons have been a massive challenge for all of our clubs, coaches, players, supporters and club volunteers to keep our clubs alive. Please where possible support your club volunteers to ensure your club prospers this coming season and beyond. We all have challenges in getting players back out on court and grounds, whether at a senior or junior levels, we all need sport to grow for our communities and everyone’s health. Outer East FN has been forced to make changes within the competition structure to ensure a balance within and we will continue to work with every club to ensure stability from season 2022 and into the future.

Support for some clubs will be needed and it is common knowledge that many clubs throughout Victoria are struggling for player numbers, keep in mind we need opposition so we ask where possible support clubs that are struggling to ensure everyone get a chance to football and/or netball, we are only as strong as our weakest link, and all clubs have been a strong and weak points during their existence. Please keep this in mind when supporting your club we all need to help each other get through these difficult post covid times. As you are all aware now we have changed from a Country Commission model to now be under a Metropolitan model, this will have no effect on clubs, or people involved with each club, this has been undertaken to ensure the ongoing viability of our competitions and being in charge of our own destiny moving forward. We hope in the medium to long term to

be in a position to save our affiliated clubs costs and generate some more money to ease the financial burden on all clubs. The board will be happy to answer any concerns or questions raised when we visit each game during the season. We wish every person involved in our competitions all the best for this coming season, let’s stay positive, assist each other to ensure we all enjoy the full return of football and netball within our region. For every participant providing us entertainment for season 2022, I hope you all go through the season injury free and enjoy your time returning to the ground and/or court whether at junior or senior levels enjoy yourselves and that’s for returning to our great games.

Community football and netball makes its return to the region for a year where participation and enjoyment of the game, whether it be football or netball will be the biggest priority. There is no doubt the last two years have been incredibly tough on all of us, but the one thing the last two years has taught us is to never take anything for granted. Community sport is not an exception to this. As such, the buzz of excitment that exists across the league, as we get back into doing what we love as we approach Round One is truly amazing to see. The off-season has been full of change, one of the most prominent being the move to a metropolitan model which will provide a number of positive opportunities for our competition in the long run, with our organisation now known as Outer East Football Netball. A revised competition structure for senior men’s football and netball provides alot of excitement for our competition and it’s great to see our members are looking forward to a great year of community sport. The nine-team structure football structure implemented for our premier division football division has created an exciting buzz over the region where it will genuinely be a great competition to watch. Picking an early favourite to win a premiership is difficult to choose at this time, as it is for netball where Beaconsfield will continue to have a presence in our competition. Likewise for division one and two, it’s shaping up to be a great competition with many of the teams situated across the Yarra Ranges, in Casey with

Berwick Netball and Berwick Springs, or in the country areas of the Mitchell and Murrindi Shire. One of the great things which has attracted much attention over the offseason has been the number of clubs under our jurisdiction who are in the process of receiving, or had other works completed at its precincts over the off-season. Works at Belgrave, Gembrook, Pakenham, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Seville and Yea eluding to netball courts, pavillion upgrades, light towers, electronic scoreboards and other related infrastructure have set these respective clubs up for a sustainable future in the long term, and it will be great to see them all complete. Other major news over the off-season has included the drafting of teenagers into the AFL and AFLW level, who have been a product of our successful junior program at OEFN. Flynn Kroeger, a junior at Wandin and featuring prominently in our interleague was successfully picked up by Geelong with Pick 48 in the AFL Draft and has already been training well with the Cats as he attempts to get into the senior side at Kardinia Park. As the inaugural signing to Hawthorn’s AFLW program, Bridget Deed was a junior footballer for Seville before featuring for Mount Evelyn last season and it is particularlty fantastic to have OEFN represented through the first lot of women to represent the Hawks at AFLW level next year, and we are very proud of Bridget for her achievement and know she will make the most of this opportunity. Well done Bridget! In junior netball development news, Eliza Molino of Pakenham Lions, Mikayla Phillips (formerly) and

Keely Burgmann of ROC and Tegan Bruthane of Olinda Ferny Creek have been selected to be part of the Netball Victoria State or Developmentn teams for season 2022. Just like our young footballers, we are grateful to see a healthy number of Outer East FN netballers represented at this level and we look forward to seeing what they are capable of in the program. A sad departure over the off-season after 41 years associated with Outer East Football Netball, Yarra Ranges Umpires legend Colin Thompson has called time on his umpiring journey with the region which has spanned 1629 games. His contribution to the league over a period of time has been magnificent and we are truly appreciative for the service you have provided the league over a long period of time. Thanks Colin! With the first weekend of action not far away, we cannot wait to get back into the swing of things as we look towards the warm and grand idea that completing a full season brings to us. Good luck to all across our senior and junor teams as you commence your football and netball journies with us this weekend for season 2022. Get out there, enjoy yourselves and most of all, have fun! Being involved in community sport is a such a wonderful atmosphere to be a part of which provides a sense of belonging and fulfilment for everyone in society. But as the last two years have shown, we all know what it’s like to have the opportunity to play not provided to us in circumstances beyond our control. Remember to smile, laugh and have fun this year, as football and netball in the Outer East is a magnificent environment to be a part of.

Premier Division Preview Senior Football Narre Warren and Pakenham willl take the field on Saturday night at Kalora Park as the only match from Premier Division in a split-round scenario, with the remaining three matches to take place next week. The Magpies will be looking to start off its year on a good note, following the departure of key players over the off-season, but welcome Jarrod Smith into the line-up, a handy on-baller who comes across from Doveton. With Trent Cody and Jake Richardson returning as captain and vice captain, starting off the year well is pivotal to setting up its season and will use the advantage of a home ground to motivate them. A Grade Netball Stepping up her role within the Magpies as A Grade coach, former Suncorp Super Netball player Erin Bell will be hoping to kickstart season 2022 for Narre Warren on a positive note on the grounds of Kalora Park this Saturday. The strong culture and well organised netball program within the four walls of the club, along with a great pre-season training program has set the netballers up for a great year ahead. Brittany Lamont (formerly Mashado) returns as captain for her side and will be well supported by Caitlyn Stephens as her deputy.

The Lions of Toomuc Reserve have enjoyed a strong pre-season training program which has revolved around improvement and on-field excellence, with the aim to be a strong contender for finals this year. New recruit Brenton Wells, coming across from Noble Park having won the Reserves Best & Fairest award for the EFNL, has been particularly impressive with his training program over the off-season and hopes to slot in nicely alongside his teammates which includes the likes of Chris Cardona, Jake Barclay, Zac Stewart and Jordan Stewart.

Pakenham Lions have also enjoyed a terrific summer of preseason training and are primed for a great season in 2022. Emma Jones and Caitlin Cooke return as co-captains for the A Grade team at Lions for a year in which they hope to achieve more oncourt success and feature more prominently up the ladder. Matt Cooke and Karen Meredith will steer the ship as coaches this season, and alongside its consistent club culture of having fun and enjoying the game have a clear structure in place for their side, with the aim to make it into finals come September.

Division Two Preview Senior Football Broadford initally struggled for numbers to come to the club over the off-season, but a strong recruitment drive new sees the men of Harley Hammond Reserve in a comfortable position to face Round One this weekend on their home ground against Yea. Recently retired footballer Jayden Welch will take on the reins as senior coach while Liam Lucas will take the field as captain. The focus for the Kangaroos in its second season in the Outer East will be to continue its development and improve as they set themselves up to be competitive in the long term. Yea are another club who struggled for numbers to attend pre-season training and make a commitment to playing this year, but will proudly take the field this weekend with Will Schwab promoted from the reserves to senior playing coach. The OEFN match of the round will be between Yarra Junction and Powelltown with the Eagles hosting the Demons at Yarra Junction Recreation Reserve. Ewan Wadsworth will take the reins A Grade Netball Broadford and Yea will be keen to resume the strong form they had from last season, as they kickstart its 2022 campaigns at Harley Hammond Reserve. The Kangaroos will have Ashley Chapman in charge as coach and have managed to retain many of its players from last year, where the collective aim is to be competitive and have fun, while seeing where they end up come seasons end. Despite the departure of A Grade best & fairest winner and leading goalshooter Nikki Watts, the Tigers still go into the year with the aim to be competitive and use all their knowledge and skill from last year and implement in to their capabilities for 2022. Rhiannon Auldous will take the reins as coach as she leads an almost new-look team of A Grade players. Yarra Junction and Powelltown will go up against each other in the first round this weekend, as both clubs play for bragging rights in terms of getting the first win of the year. Catherine Cooke and Cara Moore will go against each other will take over the reins as joint A Grade coaches as they aim to improve on the overall competitiveness of the Eagles from last season.

as captain while reining best & fairest winner Ben Wratten will again be captain of Powelltown. Both sides will be aiming to make finals come September and will be keen to get its season off to a great start this weekend. Warburton Millgrove play host to Alexandra at Mac Sparke Oval this weekend and have a host of new recruits to set them up for a competitive year in 2022. Brady Mitchell, Brayden Woolridge, Mitch Gordon, Jack Fsarrugia and Mitch Bonuda are the healdine recruits for the Burras and will just as equally be excited to get its season off to a great start. Following its strong year last season, the Alexandra Rebels will be keen to continue its strong form into 2022, with the focus to once again make finals and take it up to all their opponents. Former AFL player Sam Kerridge is the headline recruit for the men of Murrindi Shire and in tandem with midfield duo Dean Galea and Jaspn Degabrielle will be hoping to come away with the win against Warburton Millgrove. Powelltown will go into this weekend hoping to get a win as they aim to have a successful season in 2022. Under the watchful eye of Hayley Debuf who returns as playing coach, the Demons have managed to retain the majority of its A grade squad from last year including the likes of Demi Barber, Olivia Caneva, Amy Stanley and Jade Rogers, which has created a sense of good consistency within the team. Following its undfeated half-season from 2021, Warburton Millgrove have set themselves up superbly to achieve much of the same success in 2022, as they have retained many of its players. Nat Petrucev will take over the reins as playing coac while Morgan Wyatt will be the captain as the side looks ahead to an exciting year of competitiveness. Alexandra have a new A grade coach this season, with Nicole Hadgkiss joining the Rebels in this role. The club will go into the new season with an almost completely new A grade team and will be using this match and the following weeks afterwards to determine where they are at as they negotiate its way through the season.

Warburton Millgrove Milestones Shawn Andueza Shawn Andueza will play his 200th senior club game this weekend against Alexandra. Shawn started his playing career at Wesburn Junior Football Club coming through all the age groups before moving up to the Burras. His father, John, was a past player as were his uncles, David, Pablo and Robert. John was a strong full back just like Shawn. He played his first club game on April 21st 2007 in the Under 18s against Olinda Ferny Creek as an Under 16 from Wesburn. While still in the Under 18s, Shawn played his first senior game on May 24th 2008 against Wandin and went on to play 41 games in this grade.

Also, in 2008, he played in the Under 18s premiership side that defeated Silvan and followed this up by being a member of the 2011 reserves premiership side in its defeat of Upwey Tecoma. Andueza was the Under 18s leading goal kicker in 2009, however, he has featured more prominently in defence for the senior side at the Burras, regularly taking on the opposition’s key forward. In 2016, his leadership qualities were rewarded by being appointed joint senior captain with Liam Barnard and sole captain in 2017 and 2018.

Shawn’s loyalty to the Burras has been outstanding as he always gives 100% on the field in whatever role he plays and everything he has done for the club has been with great enthusiasm. The Andueza family has a strong connection with the club community and the Warburton Millgrove Football Netball Club are extremely proud of Shawn’s contribution towards the club and wish him all the very best for the future as he strives to achieve the ultimate club success for his mates.

Bianca Daniels Bianca Daniels will take the court for her 200th game this weekend against Alexandra. Daniels first played for the Burras on April 23rd 2005 against Silvan in the club’s first ever netball side. Following the birth of her first child, Blake, she returned to the court and played in the 2006 B Grade premiership side that defeated Alexandra. In between giving birth to another two children, Sienna and Logan, Bianca has been an active member around the club both as a player, captain and coach, performing the latter role in 2018 and 2019 and taking the reins as A Grade captain in 2015 and 2016.

Daniels has contributed greatly to the wonderful ongoing success of netball at the Burras, having been a leading goal shooter in many of the seasons since she started her career with Warburton Millgrove. Daniels was the club’s A Grade leading goal shooter in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2021. In 2007, Bianca won the club A Grade Best & Fairest Award and has gone on to win on another four occasions in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2021. To cap it all off, Bianca was selected in the Burras Best Team Ever (2005 to 2016) as part of the Warburton

Millgrove Football Netball Club 50 Years Celebration event. Warburton Millgrove Football Netball Club has been extremely fortunate to have a dedicated player in Bianca represent the club over a long period of time, where she has been a wonderful example for the up-andcoming netballers throughout her journey. The Burras congratulate Bianca on an outstanding achievement and thank her for her wonderful commitment to Warburton Millgrove.

Women’s Football Preview Senior Football Following a successful campaign in 2021 where they won a semi final against Pakenham, Upwey Tecoma have retained a large percentage of its playing list and are ready to go for season 2022 as they attempt to go one step further as they strive for success. Under the guidance of coach Mal McKern and captain Kiana Oates, fresh from a best & fairest winning campaign, the Tigers will begin its campaign with a Saturday morning match on its home ground against newcomers Yarra Glen. The River Pigs, starting up a women’s football side for the first time, will have the simple aim of getting out on the park to have fun and continue learning the game, with this weekends match to set the foundations for a year of development. Despite losing a number of key players from its lineup of last season, Yarra Junction return to the Karcher Women’s football competition with a clear aim to have fun and win some games along the way. David Spicer steps in as coach and has already been a good influence, driving good standards within the team to improve fitness and skills. Appearing in the finals last year, Pakenham will also welcome a new coach, with Rick Stalker coming onboard to steer the ship for the women of Toomuc Reserve. Like the Yarra Junction Eagles, the Lions will also be placing an emphasis on development this year as they try to build more numbers in its side and hope to be competitive as they progress throughout the year. 2019 grand finallists Healesville and Monbulk will clash for Round One of the new season, with the match taking place at the pictureseque Don Road precinct. Managing to retain many of its players, Mitch Hay will return as coach for another year as he continues working towards his development of the Bloods

to turn them into a competitive outfit and recapture the form that took them to that memorable premiership only three years ago. Likewise, the Hawks will have the clear objective of being a formidable outfit once again, with good numbers returning for season 2022. Monbulk legend Sasha Wolfe will take on the coaching gig this season with Jessica Moseley to return as captain. Thornton Eildon will return in season 2022 to field its solitary women’s football side, taking on Olinda Ferny Creek on its home ground at Thornton Recreation Reserve. Tash Hay will return as coach of the Shinboners, with the simple aim of ensuring her team of passionate women can have alot of fun and benefit greatly from playing a full season. Back for its second season fielding a women’s football side, Olinda Ferny Creek will aim to progress themselves further this year after winning a semi-final last year before the season was cancelled. Simon Gilson and Madeline Collins will return in their roles as coach and captain for another year as they continue its development. Managing to form its own team this season, Seville appear to be strong with participation numbers and are primed for a good season, starting with its Round One match against Belgrave on Saturday afternoon. Geordie Scott will return as coach for the Blues, with Nicole Kimpton and Vanessa Jackson sharing the reins as dual captain. The Magpies, on the other hand, are rebounding from a 2021 campaign where they were a dark horse, beating Officer in a semi final before the season was cancelled. Julian Schill will carry on as sole coach of the Magpie women’s this year, having shared the role with Josh Richmond last year, while Danielle Weisgerber will resume in her influential role as captain.
