One Week at a Time

Lachlan Shaw

Dreadful, pouring conditions struck the competition last weekend as teams across football and netball fought hard in its quest for victory against its opponents. The match of the round contest between Mount Evelyn and Pakenham/Pakenham Lions was a good scrap on the netball court, but for the footy, the Lions were too good for the Rovers as they took a 54-point win for their third victory in a row. It was much the same down at Officer as the sides battled pour conditions in its matchup against Woori Yallock. The Kangaroos will need to improve their skills in the wet after a big loss, while ROC got the upper hand over its Tiger opponents. Up in the hills at Monbulk, the Hawks were unlucky on the football field against Olinda Ferny Creek despite coming back in the final quarter to put themselves in with a chance of snatching victory right at the end. Similarly on the netball court, it was a tense atmosphere in the last quarter but no one was cheering come the final siren, with the scores showing 41 all. Berwick Springs commemorated the official opening of its facility at Mick Morland Reserve in great fashion, with a 93-point victory against Yarra Glen which has brought great confidence to

the Titan army. It was appropriate that in Community Umpiring Week we got to see one of the rising stars of the Yarra Ranges Umpires in Sophie Mustaing make her senior debut in the game between Seville and Emerald. This was a great achievement for her given she has been around for a number of years now. Well done Sophie! In Division Two, we had Powelltown and Alexandra go head-to-head in what was their first clash since 2019 with the disruptions of the last couple of years with COVID-19. The Demons were successful on both the football field and the netball court with wins in senior men’s and A grade. The combined Broadford Yea squad took the field for the first time over the weekend, playing Warburton Millgrove what was initially dominated by the Burras, before they managed to curb their influence in the second half and make a competitive outing of it. On the netball court, it was the battle of first and second with the Burras taking the honours over the Kangaroos in what was an important clash for both sides. In the women’s football fixures, Pakenham had a big win over Seville while Upwey Tecoma and Healesville also experienced good wins.

In what is tipped to be poor weather again for this weekends fixtures, Warburton Millgrove and Powelltown will meet for the second time in five weeks with the football and netball to feature as the Match of the Round. Wandin and Officer/ROC will begin a new rivalry in premier division when they meet for the first time while Woori Yallock and Monbulk will finally get the opportunity to play one another having not done so since 2018. In Division One, Healesville and Emerald are expected to put on a good show while Yarra Glen are out for redemption following a bad loss last week, but will need to contend with Gembrook Cockatoo who possess an experienced group of players. In the women’s football fixture, two clashes between competitive football teams will take place with first-placed Healesville playing third-placed Upwey Tecoma and Belgrave hosting Olinda Ferny Creek. The Magpies will finally getting an opportunity to play this weekend following some bad luck with its previous opponents. We are set for another weekend of community sport in the Outer East, so make sure you stay tuned via our media channels to catch the results.

Yarra Ranges Umpires star over community umpiring week Lachlan Shaw

As the wider football society celebrated Community Umpiring Week, Outer East FN had a number of positive events over the weekend with members of the Yarra Ranges Umpires group featuring prominently. On Sunday, young aspiring umpire Harry Siddall was lucky enough to have the opportunity to umpire with AFL umpire Nick Brown as the pair officiated the Under 13 Yarra match at Talaskia Reserve between Upwey Tecoma and Healesville. In a match which was seen as an important period of growth for Siddall, OEFN Head of Umpiring John Howorth was pleased with how the events panned out at Upwey and was appreciative to Brown for providing the young umpire with a terrific experience.

“Harry has been with the Yarra Ranges Umpires group for a few years now and is really starting to develop and mature as a field umpire,” he said. “I believe Nick’s presence at Upwey over the weekend just normalises umpiring and it goes to show that it’s not impossible for anyone aspiring to be an umpire that they can certainly strive to be there, no matter what level it is.” The PR efforts of Community Umpiring Week also made its way to Marvel Stadium on Saturday night with Alex Keathly, Nathan De Lorenzo, Harrison Pinney as well as Georgia and Taylah Priestley getting an opportunity to lead the AFL umpires onto the playing arena before the first bounce between Essendon v Hawthorn.

Meanwhile, long-time junior umpire Sophie Mustaing continued her progression through the ranks of the umpiring pathway over the weekend, officiating her first senior match on Saturday afternoon in the Seville v Emerald clash. “Sophie is another one who has performed really well in her development over the last couple of years, particularly since I’ve been around, and what better opportunity it was for her to make her senior debut than over the weekend where we celebrated community umpiring,” Howorth said. “The events of the weekend really goes to show what an exciting time it is for our Yarra Ranges Umpires group and I encourage anyone who would love to be involved to get in contact with me.”

Reserve opening start of great day for Berwick Springs FNC Lachlan Shaw

Six years in the making and postponed on occasions due to COVID, Berwick Springs Football Netball Club finally celebrated the opening of its facility with an official opening ceremony taking place at Mick Morland Reserve on Saturday morning prior to its games. With approximately 70 people in attendance, the ceremonial event had several media outlets along with members of the Casey Council leadership team, Brad Battin MP and family of the late Mick Morland were invited to take part for this historic moment for the club. A Councillor and previous Mayor for the City of Casey, Morland was first elected to Council in 1992 and served for six terms in the Edrington Ward of Casey and was passionate about bringing the community together through local sporting clubs, which meant naming the facility in his honour was very appropriate. The ceremony commenced with the Mick Morland Walk, situated 100

metres from the ground, and follows through the centre of the facility, before going through with more formal proceedings that included the unveiling of the plaque that recognises the opening of the reserve. In what was described as a long time coming, Berwick Springs Football Netball Club Chairman Ashley Allison said it had been a lot of hard work from his club as well as the local council to see the reserve be officially opened. “It was great to finally see it all come together formally and officially,” he said. “Although we have already been in the rooms for a year, we have already embedded ourselves in the local community and people are embracing us which is nice. “We are proud to have the facility, but we are even more proud to be part of the local community.”

Once the football and netball games got underway, the Titans battled wet conditions against Yarra Glen to pick up wins in D Grade netball and then also in the reserves and senior football which was a great way to finish off a big day. With the reserves maintaining its unbeaten run, the seniors got its first win of the year with a thumping 93-point victory over the River Pigs in a result that Allison described as ‘awesome.’ “This sets the standard for us now and together with the reserves that keep rolling on, it creates the match day pressure which our players need for selection between the two sides,” he explained. “Having a great reserves side creates a great culture of trying to perform because it keeps everyone honest with their performances which is great. “The netball squads follow this same philosophy with their selection process.”

Premier Division Football Week Five Review The matchup between Officer and Woori Yallock was dominated from the start by the Tigers, cruising through the match to gradually build its margin and finish off with a 78-point victory in poor conditions at Starling Road. Bradd Arnold, Kody Busoli, Liam O’Dea, Robert Swan, Josh Hawkins and Angus Smith were the standouts for Woori Yallock, with Arnold himself a sharpshooter in the forward line with six majors. On an ordinary day for the Kangaroos, Ben O’Loughlin and Anthony Bernardo were the shining lights as they finished with 30 and 27 disposals respectively. Wandin and Upwey Tecoma were locked in a tight contest as both sides fought hard, but it was the Bulldogs who took the ascendency from there, kicking 11 goals to two in the second half to finish off with a 62-point victory. Joshua Chamberlain, John Del Giudice, Sam Hodgett, Connor Smith, Daniel Hirst and Harrison Byrne starred for the Bulldogs with the leading goalkickers being Byrne, Joel Garner and Clinton Johnson who booted three each. For the Tigers, it was the midfield duo of Bailey Oates and Glenn Costas who fought hard as they finished with 55 disposals between them. Week Six Preview Having played one another twice in season 2021, Pakenham will meet with Upwey Tecoma this weekend at Toomuc Reserve as the home side strive to continue its strong momentum they have built over the last three weeks. Jordan Stewart, Chris Cardona and Brenton Wells have all performed to expectations so far and will again be aiming to lead the Lions faithful to another strong performance. For Stuart Hill and his Tiger boys, win number two is high on the agenda if they are to stay in touch with the leading contenders in premier division and move up on the ladder. Wandin and Officer will go head-to-head for the first time, with the Bulldogs going for its third win of the season while the Kangaroos are still chasing its first. Wandin have had a good start to the season but need to tidy up some areas of its game plan if they are to continue challenging the top sides in premier division. Its matchup against the Kangaroos this weekend is a good way to start this process. For the men of Cardinia Shire, a win is badly needed at this stage and will look to the likes of Ben O’Loughlin, Anthony Bernardo and Sean Roach to provide inspiration.

The match of the round contest between Mount Evelyn and Pakenham did not produce the result that some were hoping for as the Lions had full control over the Rovers to finish as 54-point winners. In another very wet contest, Rhys Clacy, Oskar Miles, Cameron Debruin, Lochlan Menzel and Zac Stewart were named as the best players with Jake Thompson in particular performing well with 22 possessions while new recruit Brenton Wells was the leading goalkicker with three goals. On a tough day for the Rovers, it was Bayley Forbes, Jackson Merrett, Matt Gibbons and Luke Inaps who led from the front, with Connor O’Sullivan and Jed Thompson finishing with two goals each. In what was a really tight matchup at Monbulk Recreation Reserve, the tides turned for Olinda Ferny Creek on this occasion as they were on the receiving end of a last quarter comeback from Monbulk where there was a very real chance of having the game snatched away from them. Come the final siren, the Bloods finally had the result go in their favour, holding on for a slim two-point victory to move into fifth on the ladder. Mathieu Rosier was strong with four goals while Francis Seal, Patrick Rosier, Lachlan Taylor, Cameron Horner and Callum Beattie all put in their best efforts to be named as the Bloods’ best players. Another two clubs who will play each other for the first time in the senior men’s competition, the game between Mount Evelyn and Narre Warren is hoped to provide some good entertainment over at Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Yet to win a game this year, the Rovers will put in their best efforts to ensure they can have a good performance against the top placed side. For the Magpies after a week off, it’s all about continuing the strong momentum they have developed and challenge its players to have a go at multiple positions across the ground. With four wins on the trot and undefeated to start the year, Woori Yallock will aim to continue its strong form in its matchup against Monbulk when they go head-to-head this weekend. For the Tigers who have been impressive thus far, Kody Busoli will be instructing his teammates to continue putting in their best efforts and not let its guard down when they play on its home deck. For the Hawks, they are out for redemption following a narrow twopoint loss to Olinda Ferny Creek last week which could see this game played out in great spirit.

Premier Division Netball Week Five Review Another tight contest for the second week in a row for ROC has seen them come away with the win over the weekend, with a marginal three-goal victory over Woori Yallock on its home court at Starling Road. The Kangaroos and the Tigers were locked in combat for the entirety of the game, unable to set up a big lead over one another in pouring conditions for this Saturday afternoon contest. Sam Neil, Olivia Hamilton and Mikaela Dakic were named as best on court for ROC as Keeley Burgmann shot 29 goals while Elizabeth Murphy featured prominently at the other end for Woori Yallock with 36 goals to her name. Wandin had control of its match against Upwey Tecoma over the weekend as they cruised to an 18-goal victory at Upwey Recreation Reserve. Kali Dolphin and Maddy George were some of the best players for the Bulldogs while Abby Gedge was the big goal shooter with 45 goals. For the Tigers, it was Charlotte Davies, Jessica Black and Jamie O’Hare who put in their best performances to be named as the standouts for their sides. The Match of the Round contest between Mount Evelyn and Pakenham Lions was a good matchup which saw the Rovers have control for most of the match before the Lions quickly stormed home late in the final quarter to put themselves in with a chance Week Six Preview Over at James Bathe Reserve, Pakenham Lions and Upwey Tecoma will go hard at it in expected pouring conditions as they strive for wins to remain competitive in season 2022. For the Lions, a first win went begging for them against Mount Evelyn last week despite a strong final quarter comeback and will be motivated by these events to try and get the better of the Tigers come Saturday afternoon. For the Tigers who have been competitive but not quite able to get the better of its opposition in tight games, a win against the bottom placed Lions will be high on the agenda, with the potential to move into fifth on the ladder following the completion of this weekend’s games. Just as it is on the football field, Wandin and ROC will meet for the first time in a new rivalry which is sure to be a great contest at Wandin North Recreation Reserve. Both clubs have enjoyed great campaigns so far, with the Bulldogs in fourth and the Kangaroos in third on the ladder with three wins each. For the home side, they will be sure to not let a well-structured netball team get the better of them as they strive to snatch that third spot off them on the ladder. For the Kangaroos who have been brilliant in its first foray in premier division, they will look to start the new rivalry on strong terms with a win. Fresh off the back of two wins in a row, Mount Evelyn are on a high and full of confidence as they look towards what’s to come for the remainder of its premier division campaign in season

of snatching the game away from them. The Rovers however, managed to hang on with a slim three goal win for its second victory of the season, 32 to 29. Gabby Bingley, Steph Crilly and Kaitlyn Black were the best on court for the Rovers while Caitlin Cooke, Rebecca Langford and Chloe Morgan starred for the Lions in the tight loss. The Premier Division competition have witnessed its second draw in as many weeks with the contest between Monbulk and Olinda Ferny Creek unable to find a winner come matches end with the final scoreboard showing 41 all. Tiana Mancarella, Tarnee Adams and Stephanie Puopolo were judged as the best players for the Hawks while for the Bloods, it was Alice Paget, Krista Tomnlinson and Madison Taylor who tried their hearts out. The matchup between Narre Warren and Beaconsfield was dominated by the Magpies at its home at Kalora Park as the final scores showed 50 to 12. Gabrielle Dwyer, Brittany Lamont and Abbey Barrientos were the best for the Magpies in a complete performance while Jemma Osborne was the leading goal shooter with 21 majors. Jordan Lang, Jaime Quinn and Gabrielle Stinear fought hard for the Eagles on an afternoon where they will take a lot of learning from. 2022. However, they will have to contend with the might of Narre Warren first, with the Magpies travelling to their home court this weekend. Under Kaitlyn Black’s guidance and strong goal shooting from Georgia Marsh in attack, the Rovers have a chance of being in touch with Narre Warren but will need to be on its toes and play to its very best if they are to pull it off. Woori Yallock and Monbulk will meet again on the netball court for the first time in four years, with both sides keen to get a win over the other this week. With the match to be played in Healesville at Don Road Sporting Complex, the Tigers are still searching for its first win of season 2022 and hope to get an early jump over its opponent and keep its nose in front if they are to get the win. For the Hawks, who performed admirably last week but drew with second-placed Olinda Ferny Creek, they will be out for redemption in search of its second win. Over in Cardinia Shire at Holm Park, Beaconsfield will meet with Olinda Ferny Creek and go for win number two of the year while the Bloods will be trying to bounce back from a shock draw to Monbulk last week. The Eagles have showed signs of competitiveness in 2022 but need to refine areas of their game plan if they are to take it up to the higher ranked teams in premier division, evident in its loss to Narre Warren last week. For the Bloods who are perhaps not quite at the top of its game, they will need to get back on track this week with this matchup.

THE BEST OF THE WEEKEND

Division One Football Week Five Review The matchup between the youth of Healesville and the experience of Gembrook Cockatoo went the way of the Brookers who had control of the match from start to finish despite inaccurate kicking in front of goal, finishing with a score of 9.21-75. Returning from a week off, spearhead Michael Firrito had a good return with three majors in front of goal for the Brookers while Daniel Welsh, Caleb Crestani, Konner Allcott, Dante South and Liam Hanzen all put in good performances to be named as the best on ground for the Brookers. Despite not being able to get any traction on the game and pull the lead back in their favour, some of the Bloods players managed to put in a good performance led by Vice Captain Tennyson Amarant with 31 disposals and one goal while Dale Senior took nine marks and had 24 possessions from half back. Berwick Springs took its first win of the season with a thumping 93-point victory over Yarra Glen on an occasion where its home at Mick Morland Reserve received an official opening. In what Week Six Preview Full of confidence after getting its first win of the season last week against Yarra Glen at home, Berwick Springs will be out to make it two in a row when they travel to the Dandenong Ranges on Saturday afternoon to play Belgrave. With Daniel Ousley in full flight and in tandem with a spread of goalkickers including the likes of Kayden Buselli and Blake Simondson, the Titans will be bringing all their energies to the Graveyard to build some further momentum as they continue its development as a football club. Returning from a bye, many will be hoping for an improved effort from Belgrave this weekend as they continue with its development strategy. Coming off a loss to Gembrook Cockatoo last week, Healesville will be gunning for a win on Saturday afternoon when they play Emerald who also experienced a loss to top-placed Seville in a tough match. With both sides evenly matched on paper and locked on 16 points apiece on the ladder, a win will provide the

was a complete performance from start to finish, the Titans best players included the likes of Jarrod Hocking, Jayden Malek and Bryce Keyzer while Kayden Buselli, Matthew Collett, Corey Green, Dysan Morris, Tom Nelson and Blake Simondson kicked two goals each. For the River Pigs, it was an ordinary afternoon with a score of 2.6-18. The clash between the unbeaten sides of Seville and Emerald proved to be a good one, but it was the Blues who took the ascendency with a 39-point victory on their home deck. With the goals shared around at the Blues this week, Dylan Broadway, Ryan Farrow and Nathan O’Keefe each booted two majors while Jackson Lowe, Josh Weightman, Bayley Sciortino and Daniel Iacuone starred to feature as their best players. On an afternoon where they hoped they could do better, the Bombers had great input from the likes of Brendan Wilson, Jake Pedder, Noah Van Haren, Aiden Gajanovic, Mitch Thomas and Oscar Miles.

opportunity for one to get some clear air over the other and take second place outright. A winner is hard to pick at this point as both are really good with its execution and forward line delivery, which means senior coaches Dean De Munk and Sein Clearihan will be firing up their troops for this all-important clash. A tough loss to Berwick Springs last week means Yarra Glen will be out to make amends when they host Gembrook Cockatoo on its home deck this weekend. The River Pigs without a doubt are under pressure to perform despite missing key players last week due to injury and will be hoping to put in a stronger showing when they host the Brookers. Struggling in the rain last week and inaccurate on the scoreboard, the Brookers managed to come away with a win against Healesville and in what is once again expected to be pouring conditions, they will be at least hope to convert better on the scoreboard.

Division One Netball Week Five Review Gembrook Cockatoo grabbed its second win of season 2022 with a 15-point victory over Healesville at Don Road Sporting Complex on Saturday afternoon. Rebecca Christie, Aimee Harkin and Laura Christie were the best on court for the Brookers in a good win while for the Bloods, it was the efforts of Chenile Chandler, Brooke Erickson and Bek Breukers who shone through in another loss. Yarra Glen bounced back from a loss last week with a 26-point victory over the Titans as Stephanie Gibbs starred again with 31 goals. For the Titans, it was Laura Walker, Allana Hadley and Chloe Maas who were the stars to be named best afield. The matchup between Seville and Emerald was a tight contest as the Bombers really took it up to the Blues to be three goals adrift Week Six Preview

The matchup between Belgrave and Berwick Springs is expected to be a good one with the Magpies gunning for its third win of the season while the Titans are still chasing its first. Despite going down to Berwick last week, the Magpies will not be phased by this and will instead focus all their energies into exerting a good performance for the second game on its brand-new netball courts. Likewise for the Titans, who have had several player rotations through the A Grade side since the season’s commencement, they will put last week’s loss behind them and focus purely on this weekend instead. In what appears to be an evenly matched contest and having won two games each, the matchup between Yarra Glen and Gembrook Cockatoo looks to be a great contest as both sides fight to move up the ladder in Division One. With Stephanie Gibbs and her teammates fit and firing against Berwick Springs last week, a win

of them going into the final break. The Blues, however, stepped up in the final quarter to build a bigger gap and finish the match off with a 12-goal gap which they held on to win by come the final siren. For the Blues, it was Ella Bayliss, Cleo Minney and Erin Baker who were judged as the best players while Olivia Ray shot 35 goals for the afternoon. For the Bombers, the efforts of Soleil Lehmann-Rhodes, Kaylah Loulanting and Matilda Preston did not go unnoticed as they featured as their best players on the day. Berwick had control of its match against Belgrave from start to finish, taking a 67 to 17 victory on its home court at Edwin Flack Reserve. Emily Pupuke, Olivia Macente and Danielle Hanley were judged as the best on court for the Wickers as Pupuke and Emma Clarke shared the goal shooting with 42 and 25 goals respectively.

at home for the River Pigs is just what they need as they try their best to stay in touch with those above them on the ladder. For the Brookers, the mentality is much the same which makes this matchup an important one. The matchup between first-placed Berwick and second-placed Seville is sure to generate great excitement, with both proving to be ultra-competitive and unbeaten so far. With the match to be played on the Blues’ home court, a winner is hard to pick at this point with the coaching influences of Carly McDonnell and Chloe Phillips each providing great benefits to their respective teams thus far. With Olivia Ray and Emma Clarke the sharpshooters for the Blues and the Wickers, they along with their teammates will be out to put in their best performances this weekend in what could very well be a preview of a potential finals matchup.

Division Two Football Week Five Review A slow start in the Powelltown and Alexandra matchup was countered for quickly by the Demons at the commencement of the second quarter, dominating the Rebels with a six-goal second term to eventually run out as 52-point winners to provide some excitement for the home crowd after a week off. For the Demons, it was Jayden Mullan, Mitch McLaughlin, James Ashby, Sam Meadows and captain Ben Wratten who starred as their best players. Russell Cowan kicked a bag of five goals while playing coach Jarrod Bayliss also hit the scoreboard, having played his first game of the year following some time off with an injury. Ted Watkin was the shining light for the Rebels on a day they hoped to get more out of as he finished with two majors. Week Six Preview The match of the round contest between traditional Yarra Valley rivals of the eastern district, Warburton Millgrove and Powelltown, is expected to be an exciting game with both sides gunning for a win this Saturday afternoon for bragging rights over the other. It wasn’t so long ago that these sides met at the Demons’ home venue for a tight contest that went the way of the home side, courtesy of a goal after the siren to Joel Perry. The Burras, under the watchful eye of playing coach James Iacono and captain Tim McKail have been competitive in its outings so far and will be aiming to turn the tide against its opposition on its home deck. For the Demons, who have also been competitive, will do all they can to put a win on the board when they travel this week.

Warburton Millgrove got the upper hand over the Broadford Yea outfit that took the field for the first time as a combined entity, taking a 61-point victory on its home deck at Mac Sparke Oval. Jack Lee, Jack Farrugia, Liam Barnard, Josh Sharp and Tyson Henry put in good performances to be named as the group who were best afield while Brady Mitchell was the sharpshooter with six majors. For Broadford Yea in its first appearance, they got better and better as the game wore on to put two goals on the scoreboard in the second half and minimised any further impact from the Burras.

On top of the ladder after the first five weeks of competition, Kinglake will play Yarra Junction in what is also expected to be a competitive game between two quality outfits in Division Two. Yet to lose a game, the Lakers have executed its game plan brilliantly with captain Rohan King, Jed Tyrell, Matthew Coen and Riley Kennedy the standouts in all performances so far and will look to continue this again on Saturday afternoon. For the Eagles who have showed signs of great improvement since last season, a win on the road against the Lakers will go a long way to instil further belief into the squad for what they are capable of and will look to the likes of ball magnet Ewan Wadsworth, David Johnson and Sam Cannon for inspiration as they go for a competitive performance.

Division Two Netball Week Five Review Powelltown and Alexandra fought a good battle on the netball court with the lead swapping between both clubs throughout the match as the Rebels took a slim two-goal lead into three-quarter time. However, the Demons managed to take back the lead in the final quarter and take the win, the final score showing 44-40. Amy Stanley, Maddie Lamb and Hayley Debuf were judged best on court for Powelltown while Ellie Hedger, Nicole Hadgkiss and Lauren Steyger were the standouts for Alexandra. The top of the table clash between Warburton Millgrove and Broadford went the way of the Burras as they took a 13-point win on its home deck at Warburton Recreation Reserve. Ashlee Guerra, Gabby Woods and Selina Fotia were the stars for the Week Six Preview Just like their football partners, it was only one month ago when Warburton Millgrove and Powelltown last played each other with the result going the way of the Burras when they travelled to the Demons’ home deck on the road to Noojee. This time round, they will have the advantage of hosting the Demons on their home court and Nat Petrucev will be sure to have her squad of A graders fired up and ready for the contest. The Demons on the other hand, are experiencing a run of good form which makes this contest more exciting to watch for those in attendance, which also doubles up as the match of the round. Grabbing its first win of the season against Yea last week, Kinglake will again be aiming for a competitive performance when they line up against Yarra Junction on its home court on Saturday afternoon. For the Eagles, who are fresh after a week off look to be

Burras in a good contest while Shae Gee led the goal shooting tally with 39. Despite going down to the ladder leaders, the Kangaroos managed to fight on with great spirit through the efforts of Jacqueline Warriner, Brooke Currell and Ally Black. A tight contest at Yea Showgrounds where they fought its way back into the game saw Kinglake score a one-goal win over Yea to record its first win of the season as the final scoreboard showed 40 to 39. Alex Mercuri, Jacinta Benson and Billie Cvijetic were the best for the Lakers as Cvijetic herself shot 30 goals. For the Tigers, the performances of Nikki Watts, Molly Jarvie and Ruby O’Dwyer did not go unnoticed in what was a great game of netball.

the favourites at this point with the level of experience in its lineup that include the likes of Stacey Davis, Claire Spicer and Cara Moore who are expected to lead the way for them. Disappointed after a narrow loss to Kinglake last week, Yea will put this behind them when they take on Alexandra who have experienced a wave of improvement this year in A Grade which has caused some surprise in the Division Two ranks. For the Tigers who would love nothing more than a win, Rhiannon Aldous will be instructing her players to put in their best efforts this weekend against the Rebels as they continue its development pathway with a young side. For the Rebels, a third win of the year will do a lot for their confidence and what they are capable of as we progress through the Division Two fixture.

Women’s Football Week Five Review Healesville have taken another win to continue its strong start to the season with a 63-point victory over Yarra Junction. In control of the game for its entirety, the goalkicking load was spread evenly with Paula Pavic, Jaimee Petersen and Lauren Rogers kicking two each while Danielle Carrucan, Rebecca Collins, Milla Potter and Erica Cianci were also named as best afield. On a day where they had to contend with the top side in the competition, the Eagles had a solid day of improvement as Georgia Page, Emily Spicer, Sarah Wilcox, Adele Ormsby and Jade Mewburn were named as the best players. Pakenham bounced back strongly from a loss to Olinda Ferny Creek last week with a big win over Seville by 84 points which secured its third victory of the season. The Lions shared the goalkicking around well as Bianca Moody, Chloe Nagel, Melina Eppel, Jenna Green and Kayla Menere all hit the scoreboard

while Abbey Tognazzini and Courtney Stephens also featured prominently in the Saturday twilight fixture. Seville again showed further signs of improvement for the second week in a row, registering three goals on the board thanks to the efforts of Madi Ward and Lilian Pagels. Upwey Tecoma put in a dominant performance against Thornton Eildon registering a 125-point victory on its home deck at the Superdome. Tigers’ captain Kiana Oates had a big day booting five majors to be best afield while Cale McNess and Jess Occhipinti booted three goals each. With its trip to Melbourne unsuccessful in putting a score on the board, Thornton Eildon will take a lot of learning from this game where they were matched up against one of the top sides of the women’s competition.

Week Six Preview Securing its third win of the season with an 84-point victory over Seville last week, Pakenham will be out to make it two in a row when they host Yarra Junction in a twilight fixture on Saturday afternoon. Growing in numbers since the start of the season, the Lions are really starting to show what they capable of now with the likes of Chloe Nagel, Bianca Moody and Melina Eppel leading the way for the Lions as they continue the pathway of improvement. For the Eagles who only kicked one goal last week, they will be hoping to put in a better performance at Toomuc Reserve in what can be described as a rematch from its contest in Round One. With both sides yet to win a game, Thornton Eildon and Seville will finally get the chance to play each other this weekend in a contest where the two sides are evenly matched in terms of its development as football teams. With the match to be held at the Shinboners home ground, the match is expected to be filled

with great excitement and the relevant coaches in Tash Hay and Geordie Scott will be sure to instil great belief in their sides to know they can get the job done. Having only been able to take the field on two occasions, Belgrave will finally get an opportunity to play this weekend in what can only be described as great relief for the women of the Graveyard. However, they will have a tough contest on its hands with Olinda Ferny Creek keen to get another win on the board and continue its strong campaign. Fresh from a week off, the Bloods are re-energized and ready to go with Maddie Collins once again expected to rev up her side and go for victory. For the Magpies who are still relatively fresh in its 2022 campaign, the game against the Bloods will be a great test for them to see where they are at early in the season.
