One Week at a Time

Lachlan Shaw

The most recent weekend of action across Outer East FN produced some terrific results across the region with close games, first wins and big wins the key takeaway from it all. Officer grabbed its first win of the season against a Mount Evelyn outfit who were down with injuries while Wandin took a win against Pakenham in what was a hotly contested game. It was the reverse effect on the netball court, as the Pakenham Lions made it three in a row with its come from behind defeat of the Bulldogs in its first matchup together. Olinda Ferny Creek lost its first game of A Grade netball in four years on Saturday in going down to the ladder leaders by eight goals. The Bloods won’t be too disheartened by it, however, as they will continue building as the season goes on. The match of the round contest between Berwick Springs and Healesville was a ripper, with the Titans coming from five goals down at quarter time to put themselves to win by 39 points. It was a magnificent performance by the men of Mick Morland Reserve, who are now in

the top four, and have announced themselves to the competition as one of the big up and comers. Local rivals Yarra Junction and Powelltown went hard at it last week in a typical, competitive matchup. Despite being in front at half-time, the Demons gave up the lead with the result going the way of the Eagles by six points which was, remarkably, the same margin as what we saw in Round One. Alexandra gave up a quarter time lead and lost to Warburton Millgrove by five goals in what was the second straight defeat at home. Remarkable scenes at Belgrave saw the women’s football side of Seville take its first win ever, which has instilled great belief and confidence into the Blues as they continue its development pathway as a team. The shock of the round was the big loss of Olinda Ferny Creek to Healesville in a match where many thought would be a close one, given they are both positioned in the top three on the ladder. This weekend, we have Monbulk and

Officer/ROC featuring as the match of the round, while Woori Yallock and Pakenham will play off for the second top four clash in two weeks. Local rivals Healesville and Yarra Glen will go head-to-head while Emerald will be hoping to seek redemption against Berwick for its Round Two loss. Division Two will also see some terrific clashes with Yarra Junction and Warburton Millgrove going head-tohead in a clash of local rivals while third placed Powelltown will look to claw back some ground this week on the ladder when they host Kinglake. Healesville and Pakenham will play each other for the first time in season 2022 while Olinda Ferny Creek will look to settle themselves down when they play Yarra Junction this week. As we approach the half-way point of the year with the Queens Birthday long weekend in sight, clubs will use this weekend to try and get some final traction on their respective programs before heading into the break, with rest and recovery a key focus of what’s to come.

Third running of Jai Reed Cup a success The Jai Reed Cup initiative returned for its third running on Sunday with a good crowd coming to Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve where the aim was to continue raising awareness for epilepsy and money for Epilepsy Foundation of Australia. With eight games of junior football held across the day, Mount Evelyn hosted Wandin in all except for two of the matches, with the main event being the Under 17’s clash between the Rovers and the Bulldogs later in the afternoon. Bridget Vallence MP was in attendance for the special occasion and the Member for Evelyn led the ceremony for the presentation of the Jai Reed Cup which was awarded to Wandin for its win over the Rovers, as well as handing out the best on ground award. The day, however, was about so much more than games of football, with great awareness shown for epilepsy and money raised for the foundation through big raffle prizes that contributed to the success of the day.

“We are still counting the funds as we managed to sell lots of tickets from the weekend where local business contributed to the raffle,” said event organiser Anthony Burns.

Lachlan Shaw

“Every year, I put my hand up to run the event because I have a strong connection with the illness and Jai passed away from epilepsy while I was president,” he explained.

“A lot of kids wore purple as the recognised colour for epilepsy and we also had Yarra Ranges TV come along to undertake a feature interview with our president Matthew Bell which was well received.

“I am driven to make the event bigger and better every year and continue to raise awareness which is why I believe it’s important we pass on the message to the younger generation coming through the club.”

“We certainly achieved our goal of raising more awareness and I feel like it’s going to get bigger and better with each year.”

Burns is thankful to the junior football club committees of Mount Evelyn and Wandin for their involvement in the running of the event, in addition to Phil Nicholls of Epilepsy Foundation of Australia who provided great support.

Among the guests were the family and friends of Jai Reed, who appreciated the way the event honours his memory. As former president of Mount Evelyn juniors, Burns has a great connection with Jai’s father Nathan and the wider family, and understands the negative effects of family with epilepsy as his daughter suffers from the illness.

“Phil paid me a visit last week and provided a donation and merchandise for us to sell on Sunday where the profits could then be donated back to the foundation,” he said. “He has been a great help to me in organising the event this year.”

Narre Warren still building despite strong start

Lachlan Shaw

Narre Warren Football Netball Club have enjoyed a superb run in season 2022, with undefeated campaigns across senior football and A grade netball. A major component of this can be attributed to a strong pre-season campaign across the club which saw some improvement in fitness and skills that enables them to attack the year the same way they did in 2021. Club president Stuart Stephenson is impressed with the Magpies ladderleading performance, but more simply, is just glad to be out playing again following the disruptions of the last two years. “It’s great to see our players enjoying their sport, socialising with each other and around the club,” he said. “I enjoy watching us play, the way we have been moving the ball into the forward line has worked really well and the guys have got some great systems in place.” The Magpies have performed well as a team which has seen great coordination from defence right down to the forward line, but there are some

standouts across both disciplines of sport who have shone this year. From a netball sense, Gabrielle Dwyer moved to defence this year and has responded well to the challenge, while Chelsea Tonna has stepped up to perform well as a shooter. In football, several of the young umpires have really flourished this year with the likes of Lachie Benson moving into the ruck over the last few weeks which has enabled Jake Richardson to stay in the forward line. Trent Cody and Kurt Mutimer have been outstanding while Joel Zietsman has performed well in defence. The change in structure to premier division has seen great competition, with Stephenson himself really enjoying the standard of football and netball. “The league has made a great effort to encourage the teams to get going,” he said. From what we’ve encountered so far, Monbulk really challenged us in Round Two, Olinda Ferny Creek were good for a large part of the game on

Saturday, Pakenham are a fit young team and Wandin are going to be tough to beat at home when we play them later in the year. “I think there’s great depth in our opposition this year.” While clearly at the top of their game, the Magpies are committed to improving every week as they cannot afford to rest on its laurels if they are to contend when the finals come around later in the year. The club president is thankful to all players, coaches, committee members and volunteers for their input which has contributed to the strong campaign to date but emphasised his appreciation for two volunteers who put their hand up to help every week. “I would like to thank our volunteers generally but Maree who runs our canteen and Darryl who runs the bar have gone above and beyond for us,” Stephenson explained. “They also help out at the many functions we have and are the first people here to put up their hand to help clean up on Sunday.”

Premier Division Football Week Eight Review Despite a slow start, Officer have taken its first win of the season in sensational fashion with a 33-point defeat of a depleted Mount Evelyn side. The Kangaroos took control of the match from the second quarter, kicking 15 goals to seven which has propped them up into eighth on the premier division ladder. Anthony Bernardo, Riley Clark and Sean Roach came up with three goals each while Luke Smaluch, Daniel Taylor, Josh Westra, Harry Dean and Tanner Thomsen were all named as best on ground. On an afternoon to forget for the Rovers, Callum Urquhart provided a highlight with three majors to his name. Narre Warren have continued its merry way as the team to beat in premier division, taking a 64-point win over Olinda Ferny Creek. Despite the Bloods managing to stay in touch with their opponents early, it was apparent that the Magpies were the superior side as the day wore on with 10 goals in the first half and 11 in the second. Kurt Mutimer was key target up forward with six goals while Joel Zietsman, Jarrod Smith, Josh Tonna, Lachlan Benson and Tom Toner were all named best afield for the Magpies. A slow start for both sides in the Upwey Tecoma and Monbulk match was quickly forgotten about from the first bounce of the second quarter, with the Hawks taking control to get out to a 35-point lead come matches end. The Tigers of the Burwood Week Nine Preview With both sides shaping up as top four fancies in season 2022, Woori Yallock and Pakenham will go head-to-head this weekend as the Tigers aim to resume from its bye last week on a positive note. A bad loss to Narre Warren two weeks ago has enabled Woori Yallock to undergo a rethink about its strategies and work out how they can go ahead for its next segment of the season, while Pakenham went down to Wandin on its hallowed turf in the Yarra Valley last week in a hotly contested game. With the Lions themselves having its first game back from a bye, this was not the ideal start, and they will be looking to make amends against the Tigers this week. Mount Evelyn and Olinda Ferny Creek are each coming off losses from last weekend and will be hoping to make amends for it when they go up against each other on Saturday afternoon. Missing several key players due to illness against Officer last week, the Rovers will be sure to come out fit and firing against its local Yarra Valley rivals when they go toe-to-toe while for the Bloods who were competitive against ladder leaders Narre Warren, but couldn’t maintain a four-quarter effort, their clear objective is to come out with all guns blazing as the possibility of moving into

Highway did their best to stay in touch with deficits of only 21 points at each of half time and three-quarter time, but it was ultimately not enough as the Hawks carried on from there. Glenn Strachan and Max Thornton were heavyweights up forward with three majors each while Tom Taylor, Jayden Joyce, Mitch Dekker and Joel Wensley were named as the standouts on the day. For the Tigers, Carmine Porcaro and Rory Sinclair each kicked two goals while Liam Beacom, Stuart Hill, Bailey Oates, Marc Peduto and Daniel Waters were the best for the Tigers. A tough matchup occurred in the Yarra Valley over the weekend with Wandin getting the chocolates in its first ever matchup over Pakenham. The Bulldogs were strong out of the box early and were never headed, building its lead throughout the game despite fluctuations in margins to finish with a 31-point victory. Clint Johnson was a strong target up forward for the Bulldogs with eight majors while Patty Bruzzese, Chayce Black, Cody Hirst, Patrick Hodgett and Sam Hodgett were all named as their best players. For the Lions who were competitive but now need to work on strengthening themselves to compete better with the top four had some highlights of their own with Tom Gamble and Matthew Vaiano sharing three goals each while Ben Green, Zac Stewart, Jaiden Camenzuli, Cooper Sheppard, Matthew Debruin and Jake Thompson were the Lions best.

fourth on the ladder exists come the end of Saturday. Meeting for the first time since both were in Division One last year, Monbulk and Officer are set to resume its strong rivalry on Saturday afternoon with the game to feature as the match of the round. Both clubs have performed to the best of its abilities since the step up into premier division but need to get the four points in this contest if they are to move further up the ladder. Both are coming off wins from last weekend against Upwey Tecoma and Mount Evelyn respectively, which means the likes of John Hevern and Ben O’Loughlin will be firing up their squads to get the upper hand over the other. Upwey Tecoma have got a tough task ahead of them this weekend when they travel to Kalora Park to take on the premier division ladder leaders Narre Warren. The Tigers have performed well, but ultimately haven’t been quite good enough to get some victories over its opposition in the recent past. They will need to put In their very best efforts this weekend if they are any chance of knocking off the Magpies. For Narre Warren, their job is to simply keep on keeping on, with the entire outfit working seamlessly now.

Premier Division Netball Week Eight Review Following a disappointing loss to Olinda Ferny Creek the previous week, ROC settled themselves back down again with a 15-goal win over Mount Evelyn. Isabella O’Shanassy and Keely Burgmann were the heavyweights in front of goal with 22 and 15 balls through the net respectively while Sam Neil, Mikaela Dakic and Katherine Grigoriou were the best on court for the Kangaroos. For the Rovers, Kaitlyn Black, Kate Montgomery and Montana Wallis put in their best efforts to be named best on court for them. The highly anticipated contest between second-placed Olinda Ferny Creek and first-placed Narre Warren was a great matchup with the Bloods going down to the Magpies in what was the first loss for the A Grade side since 2018. With momentum shifts and a close margin throughout the game, the Magpies held on in the final quarter to win by eight goals. Erin Bell shot 38 goals for the winners while Taylah Jencke and Corrina Emery were also considered the best for the Magpies. Jackie Cutting scored 28 at the other end of the court for the Bloods while Holly Taubert, Jackie Cutting and Brianna Hipwell were their best. Monbulk took its second win of the season over the weekend with a 10-goal victory over Upwey Tecoma in an effort that ensures they keep knocking on the door of a move back into the top five on the ladder. The Hawks were in front at every change and kept the lead at a consistent margin throughout as Tarnee Adams and Week Nine Preview Pakenham Lions have a road trip ahead of them on Saturday afternoon in its quest to win four from four over the last month, with its matchup against Woori Yallock taking place at Don Road in Healesville. The purple patch of form is clearly working for them now, but it will be up to the Lions themselves to see if they can continue this as we approach the mid-season break. For the Tigers who took a win in the match of the round contest against Beaconsfield last week, a third victory for season 2022 would do great wonders for them before they tackle the second half of the year. Although disappointed to lose its first game in four years last weekend, the experienced and level-headed outfit of Olinda Ferny Creek have put this behind them with the focus now on what they can do this weekend when they travel to Mount Evelyn to face off against the Rovers, whom they haven’t met since 2018. Mount Evelyn were also on the receiving end of a loss last week when they went down to ROC, and will be hoping for a competitive performance when they face off against its local rivals. Featuring as the match of the round contest, Monbulk and ROC will be out to put in a competitive performance for the audience viewing via a livestream on Saturday afternoon, with the Hawks looking for two in a row following its defeat of Upwey Tecoma

Stephanie Puopolo were the leading goal shooters with 40 and 17 goals to their name while Nicole Macdowell and Paige Whitworth were the best players. Rachel Grawich and Jessica Black shot 26 and 21 goals respectively for the Tigers. Just as it was on the football field, Wandin and Pakenham Lions met for the first time on the weekend with the Lions claiming first bragging rights over their newest rivals. Despite trailing by four goals at half-time, the Lions put the game on their terms in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 36 to 15 and finishing with a 17-goal win. The victory continues the great form in recent weeks for the women of Pakenham, with three triumphs in a row further providing strong evidence for its momentum growth. Chloe Morgan led the goal shooting tally with 24 majors while Caitlin Cooke, Chloe Morgan and Emma Jones were the best on court for the Lions. For the Bulldogs, Abby Gedge shot 30 goals while Kali Dolphin, Taiysha Wallis and Ruby Tidd were the best. The broadcast game of the weekend saw Woori Yallock grab its second win of the year when they travelled to Holm Park to play Beaconsfield, taking a 27-goal win. The Tigers were dominant from start to finish as Elizabeth Murphy shot 36 goals in a match which saw her go up against her former teammates. Coaches Mia Sudomirski and Alana McGurgan were also the best on court for the Tigers, Sudomirski herself shooting 34 majors while Zara Treweek shot 18 goals for the Eagles. last week. They have the potential of knocking off the third-placed Kangaroos, but will need to put in a strong, solid performance if they are to pull it off. ROC regathered some momentum last week with its defeat of Mount Evelyn and will simply be looking to continue that form on Saturday afternoon. Just like their football counterparts, Upwey Tecoma have got a tough task ahead of them when they play off against ladder leaders Narre Warren who have been relentless in their pursuit of success in season 2022. With Erin Bell having the Magpies up and about, the home side will simply be hoping for another win when they go against the Tigers, while David O’Hare will be doing all he can to extract the best performance possible from his outfit. While their footy folks get a week off, Saturday afternoon will not be quite the same for the netballers of Wandin, who will travel to Holm Park to play off against Beaconsfield. With the Bulldogs sitting in fourth and the Eagles in nineth, this game will be all about challenging themselves and seeing what they can do, with both coming off losses to Pakenham Lions and Woori Yallock last week. A win will keep the Bulldogs in fourth spot, while a victory for the Eagles will see them regather some much-needed confidence.

THE BEST OF THE WEEKEND

Division One Football Week Eight Review Berwick Springs have continued its run of good form of the past month, posting a 39-point win in the match of the round contest against Healesville. Despite starting off really well and getting out to a five-goal lead at quarter time, it all went downhill from there for the Bloods as they relinquished the lead by half-time which they never recovered from. The play of the day, without a doubt, came from Tom Nelson of the Titans, who took an extraordinary mark in the goal square to excite the local crowd. It was Nelson and Dysan Morris who kicked four goals each for the afternoon while Aidan Nelson, Rhys Fletcher, Bryce Keyzer and Nick Rattle also starred to be best afield. Max Donegan provided entertainment at the other end of the ground for the Bloods with five majors to his name. Despite being in front at half-time, Yarra Glen could not keep the might of Emerald under wraps in the second half, as the Bombers waltzed out to a 28-point win come the final siren. Continuing his run of good form, Patrick Chin was a standout for the Bombers

with three goals to his name with Mitch Thomas, Ty Ellison, Brendan Wilson, Dale Karacsonyi and Jake Pedder all named in the best for the Bombers. Despite welcoming captain Ben Ashton back into the senior line-up, following some time off with injury, the River Pigs have still got plenty to work on but were well represented through the likes of Ashton himself, Blake Binion, Jason Godfrey, Billy Gardner, Jim Marks and Jayden Schille. Despite an improved performance from Belgrave, in comparison to its Round One performance when they last matched up with Seville, the Blues continued doing what they do best and put another win on the board. Leading from start to finish, the winners were dominant once again as Domenic Aloi and Sonny Saniga kicked four majors each while Rhys Djohan, Rob Petracca, Alistair Gray, Jye Sciortino and Brendan Dickinson were all named best afield. On a better afternoon for the Magpies, Nathan Dawson and Anthony Johnston kicked three majors each.

Week Nine Preview Healesville will resume its rivalry with the locals in Yarra Glen this week, when they host the River Pigs at Don Road. Suffering a form slump in the recent past, with its most recent loss coming at the hands of Berwick Springs, the Bloods need to get themselves back on track if they are to challenge when September rolls around. They have an opportunity to do that this week against the River Pigs, whom they only just managed to beat last time out in Round Two. However, with their captain Ben Ashton finally returning last week, it could be a different story for Yarra Glen who are a better outfit when the skipper is in the team a better performance expected this time around. Gembrook Cockatoo will host Belgrave this weekend in a reverse of its Round Two fixture eight weeks ago. Coming off a bye last weekend, the Brookers are primed and ready to go as they try to consolidate its third placing on the ladder and potentially improve on it as the year progresses further. For Belgrave, who responded

performed admirably against ladder leaders Seville last week, the motives will be much the same for the Magpies this week as they continue its development pathway. Despite coming off a great month of football with three wins and a draw, Berwick Springs will have a tough task ahead of them when they travel to the hallowed turf of Seville Recreation Reserve to take on the ladder leading Blues. Having clearly improved on its outputs over the last month, the challenge for the Titans now will be to see where they’re at against the might of Seville who have time and time again, proven to be the class of Division One. For the Titans, the efforts of Daniel Ousley, Blake Simondson and Tom Nelson will be looked up to in its quest to try and pull off an upset while Nathan O’Keefe’s Blues will be sure to pull out all stops when the mighty Titans travel to them this week.

Division One Netball Week Eight Review A competitive matchup took place in the Yarra Valley over the weekend, with the River Pigs going up against Emerald for what became a close contest in the second half. The Bombers were successful for the second time this season, with a three-goal victory over the River Pigs. Kaylah Loulanting was a prominent figure once again in front of goal with 35 majors while Matilda Preston and Jammy Scott were also named as the best players. The River Pigs will be disappointed to come up short against a competitive outfit but will take a lot of confidence away knowing they can challenge themselves. Seville have continued its merry way at the top of the Division One ladder with a 34-goal win against Belgrave on Saturday afternoon. Leading from start to finish, the Blues were well represented by the likes of Alanna Lennie who shot 46 goals as well as Cleo Minney and Emily Wicks who were named as their Week Nine Preview

Gembrook Cockatoo and Belgrave will head out onto the netball court on Saturday afternoon with the clear objective of getting a win over one another. The Brookers have shown signs in the last couple of weeks that they are on their way back, with a win against Berwick Springs and then a close loss to second-placed Berwick last week which suits them well as they push to get back into the top four and into finals contention. The motives will be much the same for the Magpies who share three wins with the Brookers but could be showing signs of fatigue as we head into the midway point of the year. Seville will look to continue its successful campaign this weekend with a win over Berwick Springs who have had a tough run since its victory in Round One but will be out to prove they are no easybeats when they travel into the hills to face off against its

best players. On a tough afternoon for the Magpies, Sophie Hart, Krystyna Gabell and Amy Robinson starred to be named as its best players. Playing on its brand-new netball courts for the very first time, Gembrook Cockatoo put in a competitive performance against Berwick but were unable to pull off a victory as they went down by nine goals come the final siren. The Brookers have, however, showed signs of great improvement against some quality opposition, particularly with superstar Paige Ladner missing from the line-up and will take this as a real positive going into its clash next week. They were well represented through the likes of Chelsea Ingram, Laura Christie and Ashlee Bowden while Danielle Hanley, Melissa Webster and Kyla Quinn were the best on court for the Wickers.

rivals. With the Titans having a bye last week and using the time to undertake a team bonding exercise, many would hope they can come out with an improved performance when they play the Blues this week. A great contest shapes up on Saturday afternoon, with secondplaced Berwick hosting third-placed Emerald. For the Bombers, the motive will be clear for them as they seek revenge after going down only marginally to the Wickers when they last played in Round Two. For the Bombers, they have come on in leaps and bounds over the last five weeks as they have proved to be one of the standouts of the competition. It remains to be seen whether their talent can stack up against the might of Berwick who, likewise, have also been very good in its campaign thus far.

Division Two Football Week Eight Review The matchup between local rivals Powelltown and Yarra Junction, as expected, was an absolute thriller and provided great entertainment for the crowd who travelled down the Yarra Junction-Noojee Road to watch the contest unfold. The Demons were in control for the first two quarters, leading by 15 points at half-time, but the Eagles worked their way back into the contest to hit the front in the final quarter. The Demons did their best to keep themselves in the contest but couldn’t quite hold on come the final siren with a six-point victory to the Eagles which was, remarkably, the same margin in round one, only with the result going the reverse way. Sam Morton was a powerhouse in front of goal with five majors while Ewan Wadsworth, Cooper Holmes, Josh Wall, Sam Cannon and Tim Peters were the best on ground for the Eagles. Joel Perry kicked six majors for the Demons while Sam Meadows, Jayden Mullan, Ben Wratten, Josh Johnson and Russell McCrimmon were the best on ground. Despite getting the jump on them early, Alexandra were not able to hang on for a win over the weekend, losing to Warburton Week Nine Preview Broadford Yea will play at Harley Hammond Reserve for the second week in a row on Saturday afternoon, this time hosting Alexandra who are looking to bounce back following a bad couple of weeks where they lost to Kinglake and Warburton Millgrove on its home deck. The combined outfit have proven its competitiveness over the last two weeks in losses to Powelltown and Kinglake who are in the top three on the ladder, which means they will once again put in a 100% effort when they host the Rebels, who will have undergone a rethink of its strategy over the last week, given they are now fifth on the ladder. Local rivals Yarra Junction and Warburton Millgrove will go head-to-head once again this week, with the Burras looking for revenge over the Eagles who after going down to them by one point over ANZAC Round. Warburton Millgrove are well placed to follow through with this, given a host of its players have returned from injury and other commitments to give them a big prop up, as witnessed with its win over Alexandra last week. The

Millgrove for the second time this season. The Burras were brilliant after quarter time, putting 15 goals on the board to skip away to victory. Returning to the line-up this week, Mitch Bonuda put five goals on the board for the Burras as his teammates Mitch Gordon, Nelson Aldridge, Tim McKail, Brady Mitchell and Tom Marr featured as the best on ground. On an afternoon where the Rebels will be kicking themselves for giving up the lead, Lachlan Nankervis provided some positives with a five-goal haul. Hosting Kinglake at Harley Hammond Reserve, the Broadford Yea outfit showed signs of improvement this week putting seven goals on the board in its 77-point loss to the ladder leaders on Saturday afternoon. Neil Johnson, Braydon Hardstaff, Sean Duggan, Tynan Howard, Neeson Cook and Nick Gilbee put in their best performances to be the standouts for them. For the winners, it was Leigh Gilbert who was the star in front of goal with four majors while Ethan Robinson, Bailey Robinson, Matthew Coen, Tom McErlain and Tom Clarke were named as the best players. Eagles, likewise, are also on a high with its come from behind defeat of Powelltown last week which means Ewan Wadsworth, Troy Armstrong and their teammates will need to keep the fire going within themselves if they are to continue the momentum this week. The clash between Powelltown and Kinglake is expected to be a beauty with the Demons exhibiting a more complete line-up this time round that gives them a better chance against the Lakers, whom they went down by a big margin to over ANZAC Round. Having held the lead for much of its match against Yarra Junction last week, Powelltown will rue a performance which has put them back to third on the Division Two ladder and subsequently look to put this to bed with a victory over the Lakers. Kinglake, however, have other ideas and will be aiming to spoil the party when they travel down the Yarra Junction-Noojee Road to face its rivals.

Division Two Netball Week Eight Review In a new initiative, a Thursday night clash up at Alexandra saw the Rebels take a 45-goal win over Yea in a spectacle which attracted a good crowd from locals and footballers who had finished their training sessions. Ellie Hedger, Katherine Quinsee and Lauren Steyger were the best on court for Alexandra while Meg Sundblom, Ruby O’Dwyer and Alicia McLeod all tried hard for the Tigers. Just like their football counterparts, the matchup between Powelltown and Yarra Junction produced same level of intensity as it did last time out, with the two sides once again locked in combat all throughout, the Eagles appearing to be the better team at half-time and three-quarter time. The Demons, however, worked their way to the front in the final quarter to take a fivegoal win and move into second on the ladder. Stepping into the A Grade line-up for the day, Jess Coffey was one of the best on court Week Nine Preview Broadford will be hoping to seek revenge against Alexandra this week following its loss to the Rebels over ANZAC Round. The Kangaroos, in fact, have not endured the run they might have hoped for since this loss, currently sitting in fourth on the ladder with four wins to its name. Hosting at Harley Hammond Reserve this week, the Kangaroos will put in their best efforts as they fight to maintain its spot in the top four, while for Alexandra, they have the potential of moving up into second should they be able to get the job done this week. Just as it is on the football field, Yarra Junction and Warburton Millgrove will go head-to-head on the netball court with the opportunity for the Eagles to move into fourth on the ladder should they get the job done over the ladder leading Burras. The Eagles have been competitive in recent weeks with wins over

while Hayley Debuf also performed well, Amy Stanley was the leading goal shooter with 42 majors. Jodie Terry, Jessica Ellwood and Stephanie Ratcliff were the stars for the Eagles who despite losing by a small margin, put in a terrific performance. Backing up again 42 hours later following its Thursday night clash, Alexandra were brilliant against ladder leaders Warburton Millgrove but couldn’t quite hang on for a win and went down by a small margin of two goals. Locked in combat for the entirety of its match, the Rebels were in front at half time, but the Burras proved to be just that little bit better as Ashlyn Elliott, Bianca Daniels and Kirralee Luiyf starred as their best players. For the Rebels, Ellie Hedger backed up her performance from Thursday night to again be considered one of the best while Nicole Hadgkiss and Stef Jager were also the standouts.

Kinglake, Yea and a close loss to Powelltown which ensure they are certainly in with a fighting chance this week. For the Burras, they would be disappointed if they went down in the battle against its local rivals and will come out firing in this match. Powelltown are looking for another win to consolidate its second placing on the Division Two ladder when they host Kinglake on Saturday afternoon. Despite a slow start to the year, the Demons have been impressive over the last months, taking three wins from four matches which ensures they are now one of the standout teams of Division Two. A win this weekend will consolidate its position in second for the time being, while the Lakers will be hoping for an improved performance when they play this week.

Women’s Football Week Eight The highlight of the weekend in women’s football was reward for hard work which has taken place over many weeks, with Seville taking its first ever win as a football side with a 38-point victory over Thornton Eildon over the weekend. An even contest throughout the first half, the Blues stepped on the gas from there, piling on seven goals to two to take a win which brought great smiles for all involved in the women’s football program at Seville. Madi Ward was the leader in front of goal with four majors while Jess Beraud, Orla Murray, Lilian Pagels, Tamara Kendall and Kylie Ockwell were considered the best on ground in a true team performance. An extraordinary performance from Healesville has seen them deliver ladder leaders Olinda Ferny Creek with its first loss of the season in an effort which has now proven to them that the Bloods counterparts can be beaten. In what was a true team performance for the women of Healesville, the best acts came from the likes of Alexandra Bryan, Indigo Wraith-Tenson, Sarah Frazzetto, Paula Pavic and Emily Hay while Danielle Carrucan was the leader in front of goal with seven majors. With an effort that will see Olinda Ferny Creek have a lot to think about during

the week, there was only one goal kicker for the home side with young gun Grace Belloni hitting the scoreboard in the second quarter. Pakenham grabbed its fifth win of the season over the weekend with a 22-point defeat of Belgrave in the twilight of Saturday afternoon. With another great performance which is reflective of a terrific last month of footy, Abbey Tognazzini, Bianca Moody, Melina Eppel, Courtney Stephens, Jenna Green and Tayla Sbisa were the standouts while it was the likes of Jana Jordan, Orla Cook, Nicole Baboucek, Samantha Temopoulos, Abigail Wilson and Yvonne Pleydell who were the best afield for the Magpies. The women of Upwey Tecoma put in a dominant display over the weekend with a 140-point defeat of Monbulk in a match which followed the senior men’s game in the twilight of Saturday afternoon. Alexandria Bantock and Jess Occhipinti were the sharp shooters in front of goal with five majors each while Kiana Oates, Emma Caccetta, Penelope Dousset and Corrina White were the best afield for them.

Week Nine Preview Following a shock 77-point to Healesville last week, Olinda Ferny Creek will be using the disappointment of the loss to drive them forward when they undergo some sort of a reset against Yarra Junction on Saturday morning. With the loss providing the Bloods with a true indication of where they’re at, they will use all the skills and game plan knowledge implemented at training this week to put in a good performance when they face off against the Eagles, who themselves are coming off a bye and have learnt a lot over the past two weeks with its gameplan. A spirited match-up between Monbulk and Thornton Eildon will take place in the twilight of Saturday afternoon with both outfits hoping to grab a win this week. With Monbulk sitting in sixth with two wins and Thornton Eildon in nineth with one win, both outfits are evenly matched on paper which ensures this will be a spirited contest between two sides that play football for fun.

Healesville and Pakenham are set for a spirited contest in a game that will show how both sides are travelling. With both sides meeting for the first time in season 2022 and performing well to date, the game is expected to draw big attention and have lots of tired bodies come matches end, with the wide-open ends of Don Road Sporting Complex to provide a big challenge for the women of the Bloods and the Lions. Seville are on a high after taking its first win as a football team last week against Thornton Eildon but will have a tough task ahead of them this week when they host ladder leaders Upwey Tecoma in a twilight match that follows the senior men’s game between Seville and Berwick Springs. Although still building as a team, the Blues will be keen to show the Tigers what they’re made of this week in an effort that will provide an indication of where they’re at now.
