President’s Report
Another season has gone by in the blink of an eye! Once again it has been busy with new RGM Gordon Sumner taking control in his first full season, the Yarra Ranges Commission getting further advanced, we welcomed a new Vets team in Chirnside Park,U17 netball, printers in Tara Press, broadcasters in YVFM 99.1, motor group in Yarra Valley Motor Group and, post season, a move to our new offices in Lilydale as well as the appointment of a new RGM after the resignation of Gordon Sumner.
With that, it gives me great pleasure to announce and welcome Luke McCormick as our new RGM and wish him all the best.
The start of any season is always exciting, as all teams start afresh. New names, coaches, up and coming juniors and expectations are all on a high. To all our member clubs, I thank them and their committees and volunteers for supplying an avenue for our communities to participate in football and netball.
The highlight of our season – the finals – was again successful and exciting and I congratulate all of our Premier teams, especially the Wandin & Emerald senior football team going through as Premiers and Champions!
To our hosting clubs, I congratulate you on providing the competing clubs the best possible surface to show off our football and netball. I especially would like to thank the Healesville club for their co-operation with the Yarra Junction club to showcase the Division 2 Grand Final after weather affected the Yarra Junction ground – well done to all involved.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors.
To our Business and Naming rights sponsor – The Bendigo Community Banks, we say a big thankyou for your ongoing support within the local community, as you do throughout Victoria.
Our sponsors throughout our League were:
Division 1: Bendigo Community Bank
Division 2: Tara Press (Peter Stockley)
U18’s: Yarra Valley Motor Group (Danny Heffernan)
Division 1 & 2 Reserves: YV Financial Services (Les King)
Veterans: Swenrick Constructions (David Carter)
Netball: Sticks Yarra Valley (Darren Edwards)
Player Awards: Narellan Pools (Amanda Minogue)
We sincerely thank their genuine support and hope that we as a Community League do your companies proud.
Our broadcast partners in 2015, YVFM 99.1, came on board with a new outlook and enthusiasm. A Friday night pre match, Monday night post match football show (Liam Barnard), and a Wednesday night netball show indicated their commitment to the local area. The Saturday pre game show was also very successful. I thank Rod Ball for his huge input this year.
To my broadcasting mate, Tony Foo, thank you once again!
President’s Report
Valley Vision once more brought our game around the world via live streaming, as well as the videos, highlights, etc… and Jason Sach needs a big thankyou for the amount of time in getting everything “right on the day”.
Our interleague, which is a vital part of our League, travelled to Drouin to take on the might of the Gippsland Football Netball League. They proved too strong in the footy, but our senior netballers once again showed their power! We also fielded an U17 netball team for the first time, and they acquitted themselves very well.
To our coaches: Danny Ryan (Sen. footy), Simon Blackney (U18 footy), Sarah Hogan (Sen. netball) and Lauren Tesoriero (U17 netball), all first time interleague coaches, we say thankyou and well done.
Our loyal band of volunteers who have been with us for many years; we thank: Karen Webb, Frances Van Der Weele, Rachel Credlin, Natalie Tesoriero and Kevin Brown.
We are lucky as a League to have good umpire numbers, and this is through the hard work of Director of Umpiring Trevor McGary and his crew. Special mention should be made of the work of John Edwards, Steve Edwards, Bob Allen, Tony Cross and Allen Ashmore. Without these men, our game could not go on.
Our Presentation night was once again held at the York on Lilydale, and I congratulate all our award winners. I would also like to acknowledge the magnificent job done by Rick Wall as MC.
To our staff of RGM Gordon Sumner (who is off to persue new horizons), Judy Orren, Gayle Seeger, Kate Upton and Michelle Chamberlin, thankyou. Also, to Dean Rice, our FDM, thankyou for the year.
I congratulate the work being done by our Yarra Ranges Commission led by Chairman Tony Mitchell and his commissioners: Shane Smith, Doug Evans, Rob Allen and Mark Sargent, in directing our League into a new era of governance, which should lead to a more sustainable future for all.
To my fellow directors, vice president Cameron Hutchison, Jodi Chandler, Mick Hill, Mike Fleming, Bill Kuys, and Bill Heppell thankyou for your input, ideas and involvement in what is at times a thankless task!
To our wives, husbands and partners, I thankyou for allowing us to do what we love.
Finally, to our member clubs, thankyou for your continued support and input throughout season 2015, and I will see you all in 2016.
Leo Groenewegen, President, YVMDFNL.
AFL YR Commission Report
As part of our commitment to our football and netball communities the AFL Yarra Ranges would like to give everyone an update as to what is and has been happening within our region in 2015. We would also like to send a warm welcome to Luke McCormick who has joined us in the last few weeks as our new GM. Luke brings a wealth of experience in football and management and we are confident he will be a great acquisition to our region. We would also like to thank Gordon Sumner for his efforts over his 18 month tenure.
The move to our new offices in Lilydale has now been completed and we would like to thank everyone involved in bringing this to fruition. We now have more than adequate space for our employees to work in and much greater storage for all our goods. A special thankyou to Commissioners Shane Smith for his assistance in making this happen, Doug Evans and the Cardinia Shire for their kind contribution of furniture and Mark Sargent, Rob Allen for their assistance in making the move happen.
The Commissioners with the support of Gordon Sumner and FDM Dean Rice have undertaken club interviews both with Junior and Senior club committees, this is to gain knowledge of issues or concerns each and every club may have. To date, we are probably 85% complete and we have found these meeting invaluable, giving everyone an insight with our expectations and of course the clubs. During these discussions we have highlighted the need to undertake club health checks via an on-line AFL Victoria developed program, this is to assist the clubs and officials develop and direct us to those that may need assistance. The support thus far has been great we are here to help and clubs to assist each other where we can.
One key initiative undertaken by AFL Victoria is the much talked about Community Club Sustainability Program, with each and every football League within Victoria (inclusive all Metro Leagues) buying into the assessment process and the proposed state-wide player points and salary cap system. The working party has been operational for 22 months now, which I’ve had an active role within, I’ve found the working party a fruitful experience with some great ideas and debate coming from our numerous meetings. I’d firstly like to thank all of the Senior Clubs for their input and reports they submitted, this is critical to ensure we have an accurate picture of where we are at and heading as a League.
A comment I will make though, is that it is critical for our League to remain a Premium Football Competition i.e. winning inter-league games, if we as a League become rated lower than we presently are this could have a marked effect on our competition and recruitment later. We may lose our Premium League ranking and this is vital in protecting our youth and players as a whole. At present, we are ranked the same as other neighbouring Leagues. It is of the upmost importance we remain highly ranked. Therefore, interleague representation and support by all players is a must and I ask future support by all clubs on this front moving forward.
The appointment of two representatives from each Board / Executive of both the Senior and Junior Leagues to come onto the commission and then create two new committees of management, One each for the Senior & Junior competitions to act in the roles of football operations, will enhance our communication and input from each stakeholder. The support and progress of this has been fantastic from both parties and we all feel the streamlining of the structure into one strategic based commission is the most effective moving forward. We will finalise our regional strategic plan over the coming months and I hope to have this plan available at our season’s launch 2016.
In 2015, we have delivered an extensive range of programs to schools across the Yarra Ranges region. Our role with schools is to try and promote the brand of AFL football so kids become interested in the game and that transfers into them playing games in school, playing locally at clubs, being involved at Auskick centres or umpiring within our competitions.
Up until this point, we have visited schools or delivered an AFL program to 95% of the schools in the region. We have made 93 visits or delivered AFL programs to local schools promoting the AFL message and brand. An estimated 4000 or more kids in the Yarra Ranges region have been involved in one of our programs and have had a football in their hands.
The Yarra Ranges region has 16 Auskick centres with 95% of them aligned to local junior clubs. These centres play an important role as an introductory program into Australian Football and provides a pathway into a junior structured competition
AFL YR Commission Report
The Auskick program in 2015, across the state, has faced major challenges with the change in Auskick packs and the delivery of those packs. This has had a flow on effect to Auskick participation numbers across the state with participation down by about 4500 kids which is around 10%. However with the focus of the commission at the start of the year and the support of all Auskick centre coordinators and volunteers, the Yarra Ranges region has bucked the trend and had an increase in participation numbers of around 7%. This is the biggest increase in the state! This is an encouraging sign that the commission is on the right direction in continuing to try and grow the game in the Yarra Ranges region. Congratulations to Dean Rice and his GDO’s in achieving this result.
In season 2016 we as a region are also introducing for the first time an under 8 competition, this give us another option for kids to be actively involved with under 8’s. Auskick or both if they choose too. Our aim is to ensure the continual growth of our game and give each family an option for their child at a younger age.
Once again thank you all for your support and openness to our commissioners and staff thus far.

Finance Report
Thank you to all our loyal sponsors who over the last year have re-committed or commenced a partnership with us. A special mention to the Bendigo Community Banks in our region who will be our League’s naming rights sponsor for 2015, 16, 17. Also welcome aboard to Tara Press as our Div 2 competition sponsor and the supplier of the magnificent Iririki Holiday. This sponsorship allowed the league but most importantly gave our clubs the opportunity to raise money ($4 per ticket) without needing to organize it. Add the Yarra Valley Motor Group who offer a spotters fee to our clubs if they are mentioned when a car is purchased, and it’s been a good year but still leaves room for improvement. Please continue to use our sponsors at every opportunity, as the more we do, the less financial pressure our clubs have. Driving our sponsorship income back up is a major focus area we are working on, therefore strengthening our financial position.
2015 wasn’t our best financial result in recent years but we have managed to clear up some areas, giving our new GM Luke McCormick a cleaner platform to work with. Our cash position still remains strong with just a $10,000 change this year. We have written off the $9000 Bad Debt from Cyan Press. Along with the old Vehicle (which we received the insurance for a few years ago) and completed a full inventory clean up during our office move. It is likely that some of these inventory losses could have accumulated over a number of years, however we are undertaking a full review of our inventory systems to ensure any future losses are kept to a minimum. Increasing our income to match the expenses will also be investigated.
We have added some provisions for redundancies if they are required in the possible office restructure.
Our interleague costs were up due to having 4 teams competing this year compared to only one in 2014. We purchased a new presentation dais for the Grand Finals, upgraded our office IT systems and replaced the sponsorship signage on the radio broadcast van. These items were once off purchases and added to some smaller increases in phone & car expenses (an extra phone & car used in 2015), on top of the wages increase (mainly due to a full year term of RGM) are the main contributors to our losses this year.
2016 will still see some increases to our operating costs as we settle in to the new offices, as we now have to pay outgoings. In saying this I know Luke will be undertaking a full review of all our expenses and making changes where necessary. Some great inroads were made in 2015 with the change in agreements with both Valley Vision & Yarra Valley FM.
Our finals series was well supported this year with a record result for the Div 1 Grand Final enabling us to break even with last season’s figures, even though we had 3 less Under 18’s matches. Well done to everyone in showing your support for the league and to all the clubs that gave us their volunteers to run the gates which allowed us to credit them with at least $800 each.
We are looking forward to the review process of all our financial streams and are confident in the ability to return to a profit for season 2016, whilst ensuring the same level of service to our clubs.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT
To The Members of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated
We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated, which comprises the statement of financial position as at 3 1 October 2015, the statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year then ended, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory in formation, and the statement by members of the board.
Board Members Responsibility for the Financial Report
The members of the board of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated are responsible for the preparation of the financial report, and has determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 , is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act [Victoria] and is appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The board members responsibility also includes such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
Auditor’s
Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We have conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement , including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the association’s preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view, in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the association’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the officers, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.
Qualification
Cash transactions form a large part of finals income which are a source of revenue for the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated. The Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated has determined that it is impracticable to establish complete control over the collection of cash transactions prior to entry into its financial records. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding revenue from this source was limited, our audit procedures with respect to finals income had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. We therefore are unable to express an opinion whether the finals income the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated obtained are complete.
Qualified Audit Opinion
In our opinion, except for the effects on the financial report of such adjustments, if any, as might have been required had the limitation on our audit procedures referred to in the qualification paragraph not existed, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated as at 31st October 2015, and its financial perfo1manc e and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act [Victoria].
Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution
Without modifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act [Victoria]. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose.

The last qtr was definitely won by Gippsland as they ran away with the win by kicking 4 goals to 2. The boys battled hard all day but just could not get the run they needed to outclass Gippsland. Yarra Valley best players: Cory Glass (Healesville – 3 goals)) was named Best on Ground, Stuart Horner (Olinda Ferny Creek),
Riley Aldous (Yea), Drew Benson (Woori Yallock), Jesse Fraser (Mt Evelyn). Other Goal Kickers Baden Nicholls (Healesville – 1 goal), James Edmonds (Healesville – 1 goal), Tyson Sund (Healesville – 1 goal), Lachlan Taylor (Upwey Tecoma – 1 goal)
OPEN NETBALL
Yarra Valley 64 def Gippsland 38
Interleague this year saw us travel down to sunny Drouin for our much anticipated match. At the conclusion of the 17U match, the Open girls assembled for a team meeting prior to commencing the warm up.
The feel in the rooms was slightly nervous given that we’d never played together before; however, the experience and depth across the squad had us feeling confident that we could come away with a solid performance. After a clear and directive address from Coach Hogan, the girls were ready to step out onto the court.
The first quarter saw an incredible output which left the home team slightly shell shocked. The decision making from Ella Priestley in WA and Sam Coppinger in C exposed the opposition defenders, allowing Melissa Martinov (GS) and Sarah Hogan (GA) to put in a few settling goals. From there, it was hard to us slow down and at half time we had a twenty goal advantage. Rachael Hickey came on in the third and was able to extend our lead further, whilst the outstanding defensive pressure right across the court allowed Ty Coppinger, Gretta Hankinson and Riley Gentle to come up with numerous turnovers. The relentless groundwork from Hillary Grubb and Krista Tomlinson in the centre court made it difficult for the Gippsland players to hit the edge of the goal circle, which provided a challenging scenario when feeding their goalers. Another solid quarter in the last saw us come away with a convincing win, 64-38.
Yarra Valley best players: Sarah Hogan (Yea – 32 goals) was named Best on Court, Ty Coppinger (Wandin), Ella Priestley (Wandin), Melissa Martinov (Wandin – 23 goals). Rachel Hickey (Mt Evelyn – 4 goals).
SENIOR FOOTBALL
Gippsland 13.17.95 def Yarra Valley 3.6.24
The outcome of the senior football was not at all what was expected. The first qtr was an even tussle with Gippsland going into the first break with an 11 point lead, Gippsland definitely could have had the game done & dusted in the first qtr if they kicked straight as they had 8 scoring shots to 2. The second qtr was
Interleague Report
much the same with Yarra Valley kicking 2.2 to 2.1. The second qtr was a game of the Centre Half Back lines as no one could really break through the defences to gain any real advantage. The margin at half time was 10 points. The boys needed to come out firing in the 3rd quarter if they were going to make headway. Gippsland played the ground better in the 3rd and were full of running as the Yarra Valley were caught ball watching and being second to the ball. Gippsland kicked 3.5 to 2 points to extend their lead to 31 points at

Independent Tribunal Report 2015
All in all, a similar season to 2014, Yellow Cards were down by 3, Reports increased by 13, Weeks suspended were down by 11 and Suspended penalties were was up by 1 week. Approximately one report per 11 games and 1 yellow card on average every 3 games. Perhaps some discipline areas to be looked at within some clubs, however, player behaviour must always be a focus and the League will always look for improvements in both the amount of players yellow carded and reported.
A brief summary of reports include:
• 21 for “Striking”
• 1 for “Engaging in rough conduct”
• 6 for “Using abusive, insulting or threatening language towards an Umpire”
• 2 for “Tripping another person”
• 9 for “Any act of misconduct”
• 2 for “Charging”
• 1 for “Headbutting”
• 1 for “Spitting”
With over 500 games played, we average approximately one report for every 11 games.
YELLOW CARDS
The YVMDFNL would like to thank & acknowledge the efforts of Mr Greg Black, Mr Gary Tippett, Mr Matthew Tippett and Mr.Craig West in their roles as Chairmen of the tribunal and also thank the efforts of tribunal members, Mr. Fury Di Pietro, Mr. Harold Bromley and Mr. Mick Huistiveld.
Umpire’s Report
Reflecting on another great season of football and netball in the Valley, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge and congratulate both Wandin and Emerald FNC’s on their senior premiership success and Olinda Ferny Creek and Seville FNC’s on their A Grade netball premierships.
I would like to thank all umpires who officiated this season for their commitment and reliability which resulted in few double up matches. The efforts of all board members in John Edwards, Steve Edwards, Alan Ashmore, Bob Allen and Tony Cross has been enormous and is certainly appreciated. The support received from the YRU association led by Harry Marsh in providing a friendly atmosphere for the group on a Wednesday night deserves acknowledgement for another successful season.
To all sponsors of the YRU, thank you for supporting us in 2015. Les King of Y.V Financial Services deserves a special mention for his tremendous sponsorship of the umpires in providing us with new uniforms this season. Les shows his generosity in many ways throughout the season and this is greatly welcomed and appreciated by all members.
Some individual highlights of the season were –
• Maddi Lum awarded the John Edwards Medal, boundary umpire of the year and the first female to officiate in Division 1 senior grand final.
• Brad Darvell awarded field umpire of the year.
• Brenton Damrow awarded goal umpire of the year.
• Patrick Van Dyk awarded best final’s performer.
• Lucas Taylor awarded Golden Whistle trophy.
• The achievement of field umpires Liam Clarkson, Jarrah Fitcher & Dale Bullen in their promotion to Division 1 seniors and Lindsay Skipworth and Nic Boundy in their promotion to Division 2 seniors. All these umpires have progressed through the juniors.
• Corey Malcolm, Jackson Griffiths and Leon Schreuder for their debut Division 1 senior grand final.
• Josh Horsten who officiated in the Division 2 senior grand final in his first season.
We conducted two successful interchange rounds with the Ballarat and Riddell umpires which provided our umpires the opportunity to experience a change of environment and some different footy, and for the visiting umpires to find out more about footy in the Valley. Both leagues have already indicated their willingness to participate next season.
Thank you for the hospitality afforded by all clubs to the umpires throughout the season and I would like to especially mention Healesville FNC and Yarra Glen FNC for their hosting of the board members during the finals.
We look forward to another great season of football and netball in 2016.
