Introduction Kære Karen Marie, It’s only been a few weeks since you visited Oslo, so welcome back! I’m sure the guide you’ve just received will make this stay even better and more eventful than the last. It’s put together by your Norwegian fans, you see, the people who have been following you for years and have a pretty good grasp of what you might find interesting and/or fun to do. At least they think so, and we do too. Apart from checking out the festival, which you absolutely must – it would be crazy for us to suggest otherwise, we’re so happy with this year’s line-up and the site – go explore the city and have fun along the way. Det er dejligt at være norsk i Danmark, or so the saying goes. Let’s hope it’s equally dejligt for you to be dansk here in Oslo! Hjertelig hilsen, Birgitte fra Øyafestivalen

Tip no.1 Of course MØ is coming with me to eat veggie food at Blitz Cafe, before checking out Kniven at Youngstorget and Siste Sang at Grønland :) At Siste Sang we’ll observe the brewing process and drink their home brewed beer, Siste Sang means Last Song :) If you’re staying until Sunday, we’ll go to Blå at Frank Znort Quartet – they play every Sunday all year round.

Tip no.2 Mø, I think you will enjoy a trip in Two Flying Machines on the roof of Henie Onstad Kunstsenter at Høvikodden, 15 mins drive from Oslo. The view is spectacular and you will have a truly special experience actually flying in a work of art. The machine is made by the artist Carsten Höller and resemble a combination of carousel, paraglide and motorbike. Welcome to fly!

Tip no.3 Territoriet is probably the best winebar in Oslo. It`s a perfect little spot located in Markveien at Grünerløkka, the area Vouge named «the heart of Oslo». Territoriet has a good range of both classical and more uncommon wines and their friendly, extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff will make a selection based on your preferences. And if you are really lucky they might even play «Wannabe» for you on the vinyl recordplayer. Because like you, they also like everything to be authentic.

Tip no.4 Hi. Go see Telthusbakken. A steep street with old wooden houses and a nice big garden right next to it. It’s something else. You won’t see this anywere in Oslo. And Botanic garden is really beautiful also in august. With flowers and trees from all over the world.

Tip no.5 Torggata Botaniske is in my opinion one of Oslo’s best bars. It’s small, the cocktails are unique (and really good) and the inside of the bar covered in plants. Just like a botanical garden inside. The menu shifts every now and then, so make sure to taste as many drinks as you can when you get there. It’s located in a side street from the more famous Torggata, might be hard to see it, but look around until you see it. Worth visiting!

Tip no.6 I love to walk along Akerselva, the river in middle of Oslo. My favourite part is around Blü and Hausmania. There is lots of street art there, which puts me in a great mood. If you keep walking, you will continue see great places. When you think you’ve walked far enough, you can take the tram or bus back to city center.

Tip no.7 From the docks just in front of city hall, you can take the ferry. The ferry ride itself is a nice break from the city centre, a couple of minutes and you’ll be out on the fjord, and now you can choose from different islands. All of them are worth a visit, but Hovedøya is the first one, only about 7 minutes with the boat. It’s large enough to take a little walk and it has some ruins from an old monastery and other old stuff, which is nice. When you get off the boat, don’t follow the crowd, they’re going to the beach to lay almost on top of each other. Instead, head right and you’ll find the sea. Here are some rocky areas that aren’t so popular, or just ignored because most Osloers like to see and be seen, not hang out somewhere alone. Bring friends, frozen shrimps and some bottles bubble wine in a freeze bag. Spread the shrimps on a newspaper to thaw and start drinking the wine. (This is why it’s very important to bring several bottles. Or extra beer.) Ferry B1, B2 and B3 from Rådhusbrygge 4. Tickets via Ruter.

Tip no.8 I was thinking about the classic, drunken danish boat-trip for Mø, but instead I think she should stay on the docks and have some great food and drinks at Vippa! Sea view, great International food and good beer. Reminds me a bit of Kødbyen i Kbh!

Tip no.9 One of the factors that makes Oslo so great is our proximity to what we call the “Marka. Marka is the woodland that sorrounds our city. The vast, scenic area is protected by law, and is mainly reserved for recreational purposes. The short distance between the city centre and nature makes it possible to escape the streetbuzz and noise for fresh air, green forests and peace. All this, and you can still be back for the afternoon performances! My favourite hike is the one between Skar - the last stop of the bus, and Fagervann, wich literally translates to the Fair Lake. The trip takes about an hour each way, and mostly takes place on a forest trail. The destination of the hike is a magnificent lake where one can sit down, have a snack, take a swim in the clear water, or just enjoy the view. If there has been rain a couple days before, I would make sure to bring waterproof footwear, if not, a pair of running shoes will do just fine. The reason this is my favourite hike is not only that the Fagervann is so gorgeous, the path is also an experience in itself, and the relatively short distance makes it possible to be back in town by dinnertime.

26

How to get there: From Jernbanetorget take bus 54 “Kjelsås stasjon” to Godals vei, where you swap to bus 51 “Maridalen” and jump off at Skar (this takes about 40 minutes, less if you chose to drive). There you will find a gravelled road going uphill. Follow it for about 200 meters before turning to the left by a wooden sign reading “Fagervann”.

Tip no.10 Gamla is actually the oldest running concert stage in Oslo. Fitting then, that it is called Gamla (Oldie). If you find the time outside your hectic schedule, you should go and visit this place, they always has amazing shows during Ă˜yafestivalen. Gamla is a part of Stortorvets Gjestgiveri, which was built in 1699. Take a moment to think about that!

Tip no.11 This might actually be the smallest bar in Oslo. From the outside, Bar Robinet looks like a hole in the wall, but don’t let the exterior fool you, inside there is as much Norwegian music history as you can imagine. Both behind and in front of the bar. If you want to cool down after the show without too much hassle, you should go here and wind down. If you could find a seat, of course.

Tip no.12 Located in an old asylum (Storgata 36), Misfornøyelsesbaren (The Discontentment-Bar) is a bar rooted in psychedelia and art. It is a visual experience curated by one of Norways biggest underground artists Christopher Nielsen, who has spent the last 2 years decorating it with his distinct cartoon-art. The bar includes the famous paranoia-room etc.

Tip no.14 First tip: Visit CafĂŠ MIR. MIR is a old alternative concert venue, cafe and bar hidden from the mainstream. They have good music taste and a good red vegan lentil soup if hungry. Two foosball tables is to be found in the basement. Second tip: Visit Emanuel Vigeland Museum: A wellkept secret and a truly alternative Oslo attraction. Especially for musicians because of the reverb of the room, and for those who think they have seen it all! A must see yourself experience. Contact the museum to get someone to open up if you cant visit on regular opening ours. Sunday:12-17. Maybe I can help you!

Tip no.15 Good morning MØ! My recommendation for your stay in Oslo, is to have a quick breakfast and start the day at the Munch Museum, the famous neighbour to Øyafestivalen. In August there is an exhibition with some of Edvard Munch paintings that never have been shown for an audience before. Art makes you hungry, so take a short walk up to Lille Tøyen hageby and have a green lunch and good cup of coffee at Lille Tøyen Kolonial. Take a rest on a bench in Botanisk have nearby and sniff in all the lovely fragrances of flowers. Or, if you are full of energy; rent a bike and travel down to Sørenga for a bath in the salty fjord. Later on, you could have a good local beer at Grünerløkka Brygghus – my sister Inga and her colleagues are always happy and serviceminded, or if you want to have a drink and listen to music; take a walk downtown to Revolver. Just stay there for the rest of the night, or go clubbing at BLÅ! After some sweaty dancing, the stomach is craving for food and Sara is the best place for some late midnight snack and maybe another beer.
