Introduction Dear Ryan, After following you on Instagram for a while I know that we share a passion for cats. Aren’t they the best? Unfortunately, there aren’t that many cat-related offerings here (you get one, so keep reading), but fret not, there are plenty of other things to do in Oslo. To make sure you got the most relevant tips we outsourced this guide to your Norwegian fans. They jumped on the task, and have come up with lots of cool and fun stuff that should be useful even to a regular visitor like you. So, meet up with your friends at Vintage Gitar, listen to some Norwegian black metal, go running in a park, swim in the ocean – Oslo is out there and waiting for you! Cat-loving regards, Birgitte from Øyafestivalen

Tip no.2 The Astronomical Observatory in Vika. At the time it was built it was far away from the city and perfect for observing the heavens. Now it is in the middle of the city. However, it is an awesome place to visit. You can take part in scientific experiments, get a 3D 360 view of the Milky Way in the dome and learn a bit about Norwegian Astro History. It even has a secret room! Black Cat Tea & Coffee House is Norway’s oldest of it’s kind. It opened in 1905 (the year of our indepence from Sweden). Take a peek in the Grensen Shop downtown. As you do not drink coffee anymore, let me recommend the Green Mystic Tonic Ecological Tea. It’s far out, dude. Ekeberg Sculpture Park. It will blow your mind. It is extra terrestial with different kinds of art placed throughout the woods. The glass box is creepy at night. In a good way. You get the most magnificent view of Oslo from up there as well. Not bad …

Tip no.3 Dear Ryan. Welcome back to Oslo. I am really gutted I will miss your show at Ă˜yafestival, however I would like to share one of Oslos secret little gems with you and a place I often introduce to friends who come to Oslo. The place is called the mausoleum of Emanuel Vigeland, Gustav Vigelands less known brother. Initially Emanuel used this as his studio and planned it to be a future museum of his work, but at around when he turned 50 he changed the plans and made it in to his mausoleum. The room is dark with stunning fresco paintings of life and death and with overwhelming acoustics which will impress any musician. The longer you stay in there the more you see of the paintings, revealing sculls, birth, naked bodies and screaming faces. Hope you will enjoy your stay and if your LD ever calls in sick, please call me.

Tip no.5 Dear Ryan Adams! Welcome to Hekkveien 5. Here is a hidden pearl of a small art park in central Oslo. Some sculptures have been here for a few years, others are new. Going on a sunny day, maybe you’re lucky to find a ripe apple in one of the apple trees while you walk through the garden. The garden is made and owned by Norsk Billedhoggerforening (Norwegian Sculptors Society). Hope you have a beautiful day in Oslo! 18

Tip no.6 Hi there Ryan! While in Oslo you might wanna check out some of these things. I heard that you asked your friend Bryan for some Mayhem albums a couple of years ago, but now you have the chance of getting them yourself at Neseblod (or Nosebleed in English). Maybe you will find the Live in Sarpsborg album from my hometown. If you are in for more Mayhem stuff their old rehearsal barn is located just outside of Oslo and still standing... Other than that I hope the sun is out while your in town and if so, you might be in need of some new shades? Get them at Interoptik Ze-Bra not far from the venue. It just might happen that the owner Benedicte has brought her cat to the store that day and you can say hello. Either way I wish you the best of times in Oslo!
HĂĽkon Gangestad
So, Ryan you know Neseblod Records right? Go there. Maybe you’ll find a Mayhem bootleg, who knows? Enjoy our little town!

Tip no.7 I recommend a beer and a burger at Teddy’s Soft Bar. It’s a café and bar at Grønland with its original interior from 1958 intact, including a real Wurlitzer jukebox. The jukebox in the corner gives Teddy’s Soft Bar a flavour of 1950s USA. Teddy’s is quite small and intimate, and you get the feeling that you’re not alone, even if you come by yourself.

Tip no.8 Adamstuen is named after the infamus happening on friday the 13th 1844 when wagonman Adams was on his way from the dark forests north of Oslo (then Christiania) with a load of high octane moonshine. When he came down Ullevålsveien he hit a large grass root (norw. “Tuen”) . Due to this a weel broke on the wagon tipped over and the moonshine streamed down the hill. All the way down to a house on the bottom of the hill, where a lovely girl named Therese lived. Therese was very glad to see the stream of moonshine come streaming down from Ullevålsveien, killing all the thorn-bushes where it ran. Because Therese always wanted to go up to Elvis Kebab for a snack, but she couldn’t get there. She followed the stream up and met up with wagoneer Adams. And after They shared the last few drops of Moonshine. They drunken ones wandered off to get a new bolt to fix the wagon weel, and fell in love on the way. Together they built a cabin (today Ullevålsveien 90B). This was later to be known as Adam-stuen. But the real story is that this is the place where wagoneer Adams hit the “tuen”. the flow of moonshine created Theresesgate. The Bolt was found at a blacksmiths house, later to be named “Bolteløkka”.
24
This was also the start of the Norwegian quote “Liten tue kan velte stort lass”. A small root may tip a large load... All true …

Tip no.10 Hovedøya. I love the city, yet the best part about going out to the islands is leaving the bustle of Oslo behind. For a green oasis with no cars and a sense of being in the countryside. And it’s never wrong to get to go on a boatride either!

Tip no.12 We’ll start in the yard of Galgeberg. Here was the city’s gallow and execution venue for hundreds of years from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century when the court moved a short stroll to the other side of Strømsveien and the military exertion site they had in Etterstad. When the excavation of this gallow site started in the 1930s a large amount of bones was found and not least a skull with a 12inch nail through it. The last execution at Galgeberg took place on October 14, 1815, when the loose soul of Anders Flatebydalen was thrown out after the assassination of the farmers worker Gunder Gjestang just outside Enebakk. The executioner of Oslo, I guy named Anton Lædel, separated the head of Flatebydalen from his body with one swing of the axe. The head was then put on a stake. Cutting heads was by the way a very popular occupation for the city’s population. When popular executioner Samson Isberg swung his ax for the last time in 1871, over 5000 curious people of Oslo were present. It’s no coincidence that we start right here at Galgeberg. Just on the corner over here, the peasants from the inland for many years have come down towards the city and the mess of sin that waited for them at the end of that hill. Imagine for yourself the coming bridegroom sitting on a horse
32
cart with grain or butter in the carriage, a bottle of homemade brew on his inner pocket and a growing boner in his pants. He’s exited to the breaking point over the fun rides that awaited on the end of that hill. Have this picture in your head as you walk into the car again and we’ll drive as slowly as horse carriage would be done down that hill to Vaterland. Vaterland represented Oslo’s pile of sin for hundreds of years. After the Vaterland bridge was built in 1654, all traffic from the north and eastern part of Norway was slipped through this road in an area called Greenland. Only in 1827 Nybrua was opened to take traffic from the north. So for many ways, Greenland represented a pinch of destruction, where only few farmers came across the river and via Brugata to Youngstorget or Stortorget. Here the whores, the liquor stores and the con men were all over you, and they would fool the farmers of both cargo and money. Concepts like the peasant trap and what they called “bangeangst” occurred here with the peasant’s naughty meeting with the city. Many of the farmers woke up the next day without any goods, no horse, money or clothes, and had to go home empty handed. Some of them were also prone to assassination. Certainly, the last two executed at Etterstad by Samson Isberg in the 1870s were two Danes who said they were interested in buying a carriage of liquor from a gullible farmer, but instead they cut his head off when he was on his way towards Hovedøya.
33
On this road there is also a story about a Norwegian music adventure in the billionaire class. The previous owner of the record store Neseblod Records (Helvete) here in Schweigaards gate 56 – Øystein “Euronymus” Aarseth – is best known for being hit by 22 knife sticks applied to him by Varg “Count Griscnackh” Vigernes in 1993, of which 16 were in the back, although Varg Vikernes claimed that these damages came as a result of Aarseth falling over broken glass. The murder was committed in Tøyengata closer to the festival site. Aarseth formed the black metal band Mayhem in 1984, thus marking the beginning of the adventurous Norwegian black metal success. If any of you think that Varg Vikernes was the angry wolf who killed the little lamb Aarseth, you must think again. When band member Dead comitted suicide in 1991, Aarseth discovered the body. Dead had also left a suicide letter where he said he was sorry that he used a firearm and left so much blood. But instead of calling the police, Aarseth found a camera to take pictures of the body with. The rumor also has to make him part of the skull that was stretched outwards to make jewelry that he would give to the hardcore fans. The image of his late bandmate with brain mass and even more is the cover photo a bootleg issue released in South America. All bestial murder usually has a motive. Here the subject is still unclear. Did Aarseth still owe Vikernes money for previous record releases? Was there a
34
rivalry between two about who would be the king of the Black Metal Hill? That’s how the saga goes. Neseblod Records is also visited by thousands of pilgrimage black metal fans from around the world, not least in connection with the Inferno Festival, which is organized every Easter, and is one of Oslo’s most famous landmarks globally. Let’s drive through Oslo’s slightly hidden “red light district” where the street whores are at night and to Oslo City Town Hall and it’s east wall. The Town Hall is supposed to be the only public building in the world that has a sculpture by a prostitute. Oslo had two regions of the city where prostitution was widespread. As you already know one was at Vaterland and another was here in Vika where the city’s elite used the brothels, or with the slightly more finer “8-day girls”. In the period 1840-1888, prostitution was legalized in Oslo. For health reasons. The sexually transmitted diseases fluttered and by legalizing prostitution, they were able to invoke the prostitutes for regular checks. One of the popular brothels was called Napoleon’s Castle was just here by the Town Hall’s east wall. The sexual double standards in Oslo at this time was heavily attacked by bohemian artist Hans Jæger and the Christiania Bohemia. The women became acknowledged as mother and wife, but had no own sexuality. Men, however, could easily walk out of their homes, away from wives and kids, to have sexual desires with prostitutes.
35
Now get in the car and drive to Fagerborg Church. Here is Stensparken, or Natmandshaugen as it used to be called. Originally, the city’s garbage dump was located at Rikshospitalet (The Hospital), but was moved here around 1820. The nightman was at the bottom of the urban ranks. His task was to clean up after the executioner. He remove bodies that could not be in holy ground. He’d destroy dead animals and otherwise keep the streets clean. On the top of this garbage dung was where the inhabitants of the city would go to get good food soil once the corpses ond animal bodies had decomposed. “For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.” The pissoir here where we stand at was built in 1937, quickly became a popular meeting place for gays. Hence the name of the love carousel, etc. The pissoir resembles a fungus that grows up from the fertile soil on a garbage filling is perhaps funny, but the cruising traffic in and around this pissoir represented among the earliest periods in Oslo’s history when gays openly showed their sexuality. Let’s get in the car again. Then we have come to an end where the future star of the Øya scene will be put to the test. Cruising traffic among city gays never rests here at Sognsvann. Not least up in the area of “Store Stå” (Big Stand). The rules here are simple. To show that
36
you have performed the mission and actually have been into the cruising country, you will return with a condom – used or unused – from the top of the Store Stå where condoms are available inside a birdhouse. Good luck! See you on the stage, hopefully.

Tip no.13 Hi Ryan. As a fan I know that you are a fan of Norwegian Black metal. My tips for your visiting Oslo and something to do here. One of them is a Visit to a Ski/Follo, the Home of Mayhem. As it not far from downtown Oslo maybe you fill find some inspiration for some song there. Or understand where Mayhem got their inspiration from? My second tips for you or a perfect way to and a day off would be too stop at Big Dipper Records a record store in Oslo who are good on vinyl. Maybe the could have something too add to your collection?

Tip no.14 Hello Ryan Adams! Welcome to Oslo! I’ve got two tips for you, while you stay here. The Sunday market at Blå. It is especially good venue when it’s summer. It varies every week what you will find there. Everything from clothes, vegan food or handmade stuff. There is also beautiful graffiti and other art around the area, which makes it an extra nice place. It is also close to Grünerløkka, which is the biggest hipster area we have in Oslo. The Edvard Munch Museum is also a nice place you can enjoy art. At the time he lived, people bullied him for his paintings. Now, his art is world famous! Right now, there is an exhibition called “Towards the wood”. Our famous author Karl Ove Knausgård have chosen which paintings to be exhibited. The museum lies next to Øyafestivalen. I really hope that you will enjoy Øyafestivalen, and your trip here in Oslo.

Tip no.15 A country music icon, posing in front of an iconic Oslo landmark. «Buck Owens Live In Scandinavia» was recorded at Njårdhallen (musically most know for some hot Stax/Volt Soul Revue footage from 1967) a bit down the hill from Holmenkollen. It was a very limited edition release in Norway in 1970, but later reissued on vinyl by Sundazed. The Bill Graham of Norway, famed concert promotor Gunnar Eide, introduces Buck and his Buckaroos before they slide themselves into the, at this point, less than year old «Up On Cripple Creek» by The Band. The best story from Buck Owens’ many visits to Oslo – country music has always been very popular with Norwegians – is not confirmed, but it’s too good not to share: At one point, Buck was invited to visit King Olav in the Royal Castle. The king offers him a glass of cognac, Buck responding politely «That’s good cognac!» To which the king (his secret service nickname was «Whiskey») responds: «Well, I am the king, you know». The original Holmenkollen ski jump structure was finally torn down in 2006, and replaced with a new iconic tower.
