Introduction Hey «Brother», Welcome back to Oslo, capital city of Norway. The country known for its beautiful nature (much like Canada), fjords, salmon, black metal, the happiest people on earth and the world’s longest coast line. Oslo has 666 (!) 759 inhabitants. Coincidental … I don’t think so! Hope you find some useful tips in this guide that our dear festival audience has put together just for you. For example, if you guys are looking for something other than just «Salad days», more to the likes of «Pepperoni Playboy». Here’s one Norwegian phrase I think you will find handy to know whilst in Oslo: “Hvor er nærmeste flipper-spill?” This will help you locate a nearby pinball machine. «Go Easy» and enjoy your stay here. Hope it will be filled with music, games, food and make you have «Dreams of Yesterday» when you head back home. Peace out! Maj Christin from Øyafestivalen

Tip no.1 A good thing about Oslo is that it is really easy to run away from Oslo. Find some short shorts and a pair of comfortable running shoes. Put them on and start walking from wherever you are. Ask someone on the street to point you towards Akerselva, it should be pretty easy to find. Once you locate the river, start running upwards, against the current. There is a pretty nice walking path all along Akerselva. Follow the path at a speed you are comfortable with, and focus on navigating through the locals walking dogs or babies or themselves. Keep an eye out for trout in the river as you continue upwards - they just came back after a chemical mishap some years ago. We’re excited about it, but I have yet to see one. As you pass Nydalen, things start to feel less like a city. Keep running. When the path crosses a small dam, you´re there. Take a right, find a good spot and jump in the water. Use a towel or the sun to dry up. Watch the ducks, listen to some other birds and have a cigarette if you feel too healthy.

10

Run back the way you came or hop on bus no 54 down to the city centre when you´ve had enough peace and quiet.

Tip no.2 Need a break from the Urban buzz? Well, Oslo, the capital of Norway, happens to be very close to both the fjord and the woods. Actually, the center of the capital borders the very nice green “Marka” and up at “Tryvann” our great climbing park is located, where we all love to ski in the winter. Why don’t you go there by Tram or a taxi to get the feeling of beeing above Oslo, to be peaceful and gave a rest with the sounds of a forest, and to challenge your physics and eachother to prep for new music experiences?! Have a great trip to Oslo Sommerpark.

Tip no.3 Hi Mac. I now you’re into music, so my tip for you is to really just hang out at the festival and see some great shows. The festival is really friendly and safe, so most artist prefer to walk around the area and just see some shows. Feist and Ryan Adams are playing the same day as you. One of my favourite moments at Ă˜yafestivalen is when I suddenly turn around and see people like Thurston Moore or Kendrick Lamar standing next to us. So come on out and enjoy the music.

Tip no.4 Get a quick tour of NRK Marienlyst. NRK is the Norwegian state broadcaster, just like CBC in Canada. They even named one of their childrens TV-show characters after you; Max DeMekker. This surely will be fun for everyone.

Tip no.5 In fear of getting the hardcore locals on my tail, I would recommend Marco a relaxing bath, or a daring jump from the cliffs at the beautiful peninsula Bygdøy on the west side of Oslo. Along the trail that goes through the scenic forest it is possible, with a local guide that holds some of the keys to the secrets of the city, to find “Pantern”. Translates to “The Panther”. This has been the place for local daredevils for all times, and it is still that way. The cliffs vary in height and gives all levels of daring a fair chance. Below, by the water there is also quiet spots on the rocks. Local folklore tells the tail of how the term “The Panther” came to be. The infamous bohemia gang “Kristiania Bohemen” used to hang out on the cliffs, where they performed beautiful dives and summersaults into the deep blue sea, in the late 1800s. The term “Pantern” – “The Panther” – came as a direct opposition to another bathing spot on the east side of town. A spot where there is no cliffs, no jumps and sand bottom in a bay along the shore.

18

This spot is known as “Katten”. Best translated to “The Kitten” . Early urban myth or folklore? I can´t know for sure. Enjoy Oslo! High dive, not high five.

Tip no.6 Hi Mac, when you come to Oslo you should go to Museum of Science and Technology. You can bring out your inner child and test different technical and science stuff. They also have the “Music Machines exhibition” where they have The Studer J37 recorder, the same that The Beatles recorded “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. They also have late night exhibitions (no kids allowed) where you can buy beer and see different concerts. Enjoy your stay!

Tip no.7 S’up Mac? I am probably not your biggest fan, but def a fan. Anyways I suggested a place called Tilt, which is in the center of Oslo, next to Rockefeller, the stage I work at. Tilt has loads of pinball games, old arcade games, and shuffle board. The beer selection is alright, too. Hit me up if you want to lose in shuffle board!

Tip no.8 You should visit Schouskjellern and grab a beer with me. They got the best beer in town, and I will guide you through it. I might even buy you a beer.

Tip no.9 “Sædfuck” translates to “Sperm fuck” – a work of visual art that is part of the cultural heritage of Oslo’s second-to-oldest suburb, Bøler. Painted by P. Sævarang and O. Stavnsborg in the summer of 1986, this work is the oldest work of graffiti still standing in Oslo. I would be happy to give you a personal tour of the suburb, but I’m afraid there’s not much else to see there. I have a nice couch, cool guitars, and make a damn decent cup of coffee, though. Tip no.10 Mac DeMarco should really take som time of to enjoy meal at Bass, the restaurant situated on upper Grünerløkka. Apart from the food, which is amazing, and the drinks, that is equally tasty, the place has a really stripped down feel, with a hardwood bar and concrete walls. Bass brags that they are a concept free place, but they do have a picture of Jerry Seinfeld by the main entrance, and we all know which instrument kicks of every single Seinfeld epiosode … bam-badap-da-bom-bom-bom-bom. 28

Tip no.11 Bar Boca is hands down one of the coolest bars in town. The nicest bartenders and the best drinks (there are a couple of other good liquor bars in Oslo as well, I’ll give them that), and a cool and good atmosphere. If you don’t have the time to go there during your stay, be sure to bribe someone to bring you something from their menu.

Tip no.12 Start your lovely day in Oslo with fishing for salmon in Oslo’s answer to River Euphrates (Akerselva). Take a short stroll to Munchies burger, and order a tasty burger with extra bacon. After enjoying the burger, walk one minute to Grünerløkkas Brygghus, where you will be blown away by the beer called Løkkatrollet. Stroll down towards the city centre and experience traditional Norwegian liquor called Aquavit at Fyrtårnet. Be aware, the liquor is strong, so don’t lose your mind. Levitate yourself to Rebell, where the night ends with rock and dancing. It’s recommended to come after 01.00 am, and to not be sober.

Tip no.13 Revolver is the best bar and venue in Oslo, any day of the week with great music always playing from the big vinyl collection in the main bar, and concerts both in the basement and the upstairs smaller stage. As a rite of passage and to impress the barstaff, who will be your new best bud if you know how to handle your shit, and you definatly want them to be, you have to order the house shot, named Sunburnt hand of the man, with a complementary half pint, called a snitt. It will leave you with a sweet burning sensation, just like it’s creator Ole Øvstedal who is a living legend of a man. I’m sharing this inside tip since the people involved in Revolver are my Oslo family, as I am one of the barstaff. Great vibe, great music and kind hearts

Tip no.14 Bør Børson is one of Oslos absolute best kept secrets. A dive bar that reeks of that special Oslo charm and also features two amazing karaoke stages. One in the basement with a strict only Thai music and one upstairs with all the hits. Everything from More Than a Feeling to Thats Life. Mac – if this isn’t you I don’t know what is.
