Introduction Dear Pixies, Welcome back to Oslo and your first time at Øyafestivalen. The first time I met Frank in Oslo was when I promoted a solo show at my old venue So What back in the year 2000. It was a very dark November day. Before the show I shockingly witnessed my local football/soccer team get relegated to level two – a brutal experience. The only thing that could save the day was what came next, an amazing concert. I cried. What you experienced then was Oslo in the fall. August is a much better time to enjoy this city. Hopefully you will find some local treasures in this guide. Stay cool, Claes from Øyafestivalen

Tip no.1 To find the perfect getaway – go find the ferry at Aker Brygge (or hitchhike with Claes, the Øya booking boss who has his own cabin, own boat) and pinpoint Bleikøya, 5 min away from Downtown Oslo City Hall! Be sure to buy from the Pier (or order!) fresh shrimps, white bread, mayo, white wine and lemon to go, and feel the real native, urban but still so near, summerfeeling of Norway! Tip no.2 Dear Pixies. Welcome back to Oslo. It’s been a few years now. I would like to share one of Oslos secret little gems with you and a place I often introduce to friends who come to Oslo. The place is called The Mausoleum of Emanuel Vigeland, Gustav Vigelands less known brother. Initially Emanuel used this as his studio and planned it to be a future museum of his work, but at around when he turned 50 he changed the plans and made it in to his mausoleum. The room is a dark church like building with stunning fresco paintings of life and death and with overwhelming acoustics which will impress any musician. The longer you stay in there the more you see of the paintings, revealing sculls, birth, naked bodies and screaming faces. Hope you will enjoy your stay and please give your LD a pat on the shoulder, he deserves it.

Tip no.3 For The Pixies I will reccommend a trip to Emanuel Vigeland museum wich is an ultra cool experience. Gloomy, dark art and with extreme acoustics that will add extra ambience. After that they should have dinner at the french bistro La Benjamin, wich has some of the best food in town. Round up the day with cocktails at the skybar at Radisson Hotel Scandinavia near the royal castle.

Tip no.5 Last Train is Oslos most legendary rock pub. (I would say). It has been around for over 30 years, which makes this bar one of the oldest pub/concert venues in Oslo. The CD collection behind the bar (which also contains all of Pixies albums) is really admirable, and we are proud of our “no music request-policy”. As someone said once; Last Train has the best bad service in town. It is the best place for an OK beer, good music and interesting conversations. Welcome! Unless you’re a jerk, then you can just stay home.

Tip no.6 Oslo Camping is bar where you can play mini golf. They have nice beer and a good vibe. Mysterud used to be a hardware store and have a lot of history in the local community. Now it is a bar with local beer. They kept the name, Mysterud, out of respect for the man that did a lot for the kids living in Sagene. Dinner at mine, just around the corner from Mysterud, is a perfect way to chill, have good conversations and listen to whatever music you like. Plus I love to cook!

Tip no.7 Celebrating it’s 15th anniversary last year, Kampen Bistro is still going strong. With it’s unique, relaxing atmosphere serving traditional norwegian food with a slight touch of french cuisine inspiration. The wine that goes with the food is nothing but amazing! I think Pixies will enjoy Kampen Bistro because it’s a very friendly neighbourhood place with great music (the Bistro also have random live shows in the back). Food, wine and nice atmosphere. What more do you need?

Tip no.8 Hello Pixies and welcome to Oslo! I never thought I would get the opportunity, but since I do, I would like to thank you all for providing me with a big part of the soundtrack of my life, ever since Doolittle! Norwegians like to say they’re born with skis on their feet, so my Norway-in-a-nutshell recommendation for you is to go to the ski jump simulator in Holmenkollen for some unique norwegian adrenaline kick! Bring along Kvikk Lunsj and an orange for the ultimate norwegian “skiing” refreshments, alternatively, go to Holmenkollen’s traditional Frognerseteren Café; an ideal spot for an open sandwich and Eplemost apple juice. Either way, you will get an amazing view of Oslo – and the Oslofjord – as an additional bonus! I know a lot of people are looking forward to your concert in Oslo, I hope you too will enjoy your stay here!!

Tip no.9 Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the festival area you’ll find the speak-easy bar Grus Grus. A hidden gem in Oslo. Find Tranen (ask anyone and they know where it is), work your way up the not so wellknown stairs to the second floor, and dive into a delight of red velvet, grandmas decor, relaxing atmosphere and cocktails that will make your jaws drop. Tip no.11 Hello Pixies! Welcome to my hometown – Oslo! As you already know, Oslo have a lot of different bars and restaurants you can try out. If you like Indian food, is Der Peppern Gror one of my favourites. They will have a food stand for the audience at Øyafestivalen, which I am definitely going to try out. The restaurant lies next to the town hall. It is a restaurant with love in the food, and is very tasteful. The name of the restaurant means where the pepper grows, in English. If you’re lucky, the mother of the restaurant also make her special food for you there. I really hope you will enjoy your trip here and Øyafestivalen. I also hope to see your concert there!

Tip no.12 A short boat trip from Bygdøy (you can swim if you don’t want to pay the 35 kr.) you find a nice little island with the restaurant Lille Herbern. They offer delicious seafood, great wine and have a fantastic view of the fjord. A great place on a nice summer day, but also quite fascinating on a rainy day. My first time was a few days after I moved to Oslo from Tromsø. A friend took me there this hot summer day, the moving was taking its toll on me (the day I moved from Tromsø, it was 2°C and fresh snow in the mountains – on the 28th of July!!?!). I could breathe again and I felt like I’d just found Oslo’s best secret!

Tip no.13 1. See: Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum A well-hidden secret in Oslo, this mausoleum is something everyone should experience in their lifetime. A large, dark, cold hall covered in violent and erotic wall paintings that depicts life from birth till death and a reverberation of 10-15 (or more) seconds. Every time I visit this place I have a new experience, a new sensation, it is like stepping into a place out of this world! 2. Drink: Misfornøyelsesbar (translates into; Dissatisfactionbar) A newly opened bar/art project by Christopher Nielsen (google him and check out his animations and cartoons) is a place of drink, anxiety and intense impressions. One does not step in here to drink ones sorrows away, more to look them right in the eye and make them worse (at least the angst and fear parts). There are different rooms to fit your phobias with amazing drawings, paintings, performance art, sound installations and even some kind of horrible entities hiding in the walls. And tread carefully if you dare to visit the toilet.

3. Eat: Tranen Situated in a Nordic new-baroque style building at the Alexander Kiellands Plass you will find a pizzeria/ bakery that serves Oslos best pizza (according to me, a pizzabeast, and a bunch of other critics). Cool interior – a gigantic disco-ball dangling from the high ceiling and on the wall a massive mirror with thick frame that makes the room come together (not the carpet). They have great staff, good music and a reclined atmosphere with a sense of being in a place of history (1921). Personal recommendation is the white pizza with carpaccio of reindeer from Røros, with pomegranate and red onions.

Tip no.14 Just ten minutes from the main stage at Tøyen you can search another truth behind happy, music loving, rich Norwegians, drinking beer in the midnight sun in their beloved welfare state. Where did the best part from expressionism in art come from? What about Nordic Noir? How did Oslo look like over a 100 years ago? What kind of sadness and anxiety is surfacing from this countrys breathtaking nature? Come to the hill just beside the venue at Øyafestivalen. Come to Ekeberg for the full view of Oslo and compare your inner imagination of The Scream, with the real thing. Oh, of course, if the “real thing” to you means the piece of art, its right behind the main stage as well, at the Munch museum in Tøyen. But, you should also visit the view Munch saw in the 1890’s that ignited expressionisms early days with his series of paintings with the same motive: The person screaming, silently, in agony against a landscape with a orange sky, while his companions on the path walks on. Created by Edvard Munch in 1893–1910, these paintings was inspiring generations of artists, poets and musicians. Originally called “Der Schrei der Natur” (German for The Scream of Nature), is in popular culture known as just one painting “The Scream” (Norwegian: Skrik), depicted on millions of t-shirts. And so what with the hei original Scream? At Ekeberg there is just a small parking lot today,
36
no fancy platforms, no souvenirs to buy, just a busy road for the inhabitants and commuters. Its just you, a small sign on on the side of the road, and nature it selv. Bring a picture of The Scream on your phone, and try to find the landscape Munch chose. This icon of modern art even has a text written by Munch himself attached. Try reading it while at Ekeberg and imagine the sun leaving the blood read sky alone, with the ocean. And you.

Tip no.15 Arne Nordheim’s sound installation Dråpen (The Drop) lives in underground caverns at Bekkelaget Waste Water Treatment Plant. The composition was one of the modernist’s last, great works. “Deep in the mountain, we should arrange a meeting between technology and humanism. The goal should be to explain the function of the place, and let the elements of the water treatment process determine the auditory result. I imagine that droplike sounds can describe and reflect the enormous water masses that live their lives inside the mountain. The sound will give the visitors an idea of large distances and volumes, and the material surroundings of rock and water”.

Tip no.17 Dear Frank, Joey, David and Paz. Welcome to Norway, and hopefully to a true contemporary indie viking dream day in the summer sun! Now, you have to brace yourselves, and remember to take things really slow. The days don’t end here in the summertime, so even if at times you feel like caving in, remember, things are just going to get easier and easier. To get in the mood, and to give you guys the energy you need to endure Scandinavian chilling, you need to go to “Kaffistova”, which is a restaurant specializing in traditional Norwegian food. Here I would reccommend the beloved coastal dish, called by many names; raspeball, potetball, komle, kompe, dått med får, etc. The dish consists mainly of balls off a mixture of grinded potatoes, flour, broth from sheepmeat, and seasoning. This grey and rather unsettling mass doesn’t really taste a whole lot by itself, but you have to get a little bit off everything on the plate on each fork-load. It is the mixture of lamb, coars westlandic sausage (Maybe the best you will try, if you are into cured meats. Vossakorv is the name), the rootmoosh of cabbage, and a piece of the potatoballs, dripping in real Norwegian butter, will make you fall in love with Norway, and perhaps ruin fastfood for you for ever. This dish is really best after a long days work by the fjords, but also serves
42
as a basis for a Norwegian summers night. As you might now, it never gets dark in the summertime in Norway, so you’ll need all the energy you can get. Most people drink varieties of milk to the dish, which I wholeheartedly will recommend. Also, make sure to rinse it down with plenty of Akevitt. From “Kaffistova”, you can either jump on a bus, or simply stroll the few blocks over to the docks by City Hall. Here you get in line under the sign which reads “Hovedøya”. Make shure your crew has plenty of beer, Akevitt and joints ready. Since you probably can barely walk after all the lovely food, and might get a little nauseaus if the boat ride was too long, it fits well with a short 5 min ride to “Hovedøya” Once there, you should walk along the rocky shores immediately to your right as you disembark the ferry. Stop where the old mens bath used to be, or at any convenient spot. Enjoy the sun, the cooling waters, and the sealife before you, as you poar beer and Akevitt down the hatch inbetween the circulating joints of Jack Herer or White Widow. Mixed with refreshing baths, this is a perfect diet to slowly awaken into what feels like awake, but really is shitfaced but controlled drunkenness. Now it’s time to hit the town! Walking back, you’ll feel invincible with healthy energy and I have to say to you what one of my professors in college told me; beware of Hubris. The best return is the path through the woods, to the ruins of the old convents, and back down to the harbor, to avoid worst
43
risk of falling. Once in the city, take a streetcar to Brugata, walk two blocks up to Torggata. This is still a chill street, even though, as you might see, gentrification has come to stay. When you get to the “Eventyrbroen” bridge, take a left before the bridge, and walk alongside it as far as you get. Sit down at any convenient spot, where you are sure there are no cops. Lite em up, and regain some energy, before the night really starts. From here, it is a short walk to either Grunerløkka, Centrum and Grønland. Recommended spots nearby is Taxi Takeaway, Blå, Ingensteds, Cacadou (So shitty in so many ways, but still a hotspot due to it’s location), Rockefeller, Sentrum Scene, Klubb Aye Aye, aso. If you survive until 3 am, you must brace yourself for the infamous Norwegian “Nachspiels”, or afterparties. Thats when the real fun begins! If you are lucky, you might even run into another remains from the viking culture; “Fleinsopp”, or the liberty caps magic mushrooms. This might all seem a little bit much to some, but it is surprisingly comfortable and completely safe. That’s alot more than we can say about our Norwegian women. You probably already know this ... Anyways. I hope y’all will have a life altering eperience in Oslo, and if you ever need a new guitar or bass player, or a place to record your next album, you are all welcome to my home and studio in Sykkylven. Where the real vikings still live …

Palace Grill has to be experienced. Not at all posh, but super good (and a lot of) food and booze! Finally Pjoltergeist. A mix of Icelandic food, Asian food and lots of other influences.
