Para trascender en los mapas, es necesario poseer el espíritu épico que levantó Nueva York, el gusto por el comercio que tuvo la antigua Babilonia, la marina inquieta que alimentó a Londres o la generosidad y la inocencia que Ibiza atesoraba cuando los primeros viajeros de los años 30 recalaron en ella buscando un hermoso rincón del mundo donde nadie hiciera preguntas. El filósofo Walter Benjamin, el artista Raoul Haussmann, los pintores Wolfgang Schulze “Wols” y Will Faber, el periodista Paul Elliot y los arquitectos Erwin Broner y Walter Gropius son algunos de aquellos foráneos que atracaron en el puerto de Ibiza sin billete de vuelta y con las maletas cargadas de vanguardia.

Tres décadas después, y huyendo también del desengaño, llegaron a la isla los primeros hippies y, con ellos, la imagen de una isla libre, tolerante y mágica donde poder expresarse al margen de los convencionalismos.

Fue entonces cuando aquel diminuto punto del mar Mediterráneo comenzó a crecer en el mapa y sus caminos a volverse universales.

En la actualidad, son muchas las lenguas internacionales que suenan en Ibiza durante todo el año: neerlandés, francés, inglés, alemán, italiano, árabe… Se escuchan en las

terrazas de los restaurantes Musset, Bar Costa a la brasa de Pau Brasil, una suerte de oasis y Wild Beets, abiertos los tres en el pequeño tropical abierto en la carretera de Santa Gery encantador pueblo de Santa Gertrudis, en trudis. Si continuamos por la cocina peruana, torno al cual muchos extranjeros enamorados aguardan en el camino Can Limó y su ceviche de la isla han fijado su residencia. Y también tropical con ortiguillas y el restaurante La los sábados en los puestos del mercadillo de Gaia, donde el chef Óscar Molina elabora Las Dalias, cuya artesanía y diseño tiene los sofisticadas propuestas Nikkei, como su más diversos acentos. Not every place on earth can be cosmic. To stand out on a map, it’s necessary to have the epic spirit that created New York, the talent for commerce of old Babylonia, the restless port that nourished London, or the generosity and innocence of Ibiza when, in the 1930s, the first travellers arrived in search of a place where nobody asked questions. Philosopher Walter Benjamin, artist Raoul Haussmann, painters Wolfgang Schulze “Wols” and Will Faber, journalist Paul Elliot and the architects Erwin Broner and Walter Gropius are some of those outsiders who debarked in the port of Ibiza without a return ticket and with their suitcases full of the vanguard. Three decades later, also fleeing disillusionment, the first hippies came to the Ibiza, and with them the image of a free, tolerant, magic island in which to express themselves, beyond conventionalism. That’s when this dot in the Mediterranean began to grow on the map and become universal.

At present many languages are spoken in Ibiza all year long: Dutch, French, English, German, Italian, Arabic… They’re heard on

the terraces at the Musset, Bar Costa and Wild Beets, three restaurants in the small, enchanting village of Santa Gertrudis, a place where many foreigners enamoured of the island have established residency. And on Saturdays at the stalls in Las Dalias outdoor market, whose arts and design speak in the most varied accents.

Equally cosmopolitan are the streets of La Marina, in Ibiza, where it’s possible to buy the traditional senallons (wicker baskets) of José Pascua, the colourful and well-known Hindu garments of Vicente Ganesha, or the designs of independent European creators that you’ll find in boutiques like reVOLVER, Elena Almanzor and Ibiza CODE. Or in the old port, the one that in the old days received those first travellers and that today welcomes luxury yachts from the most varied countries.

Art galleries like Art Project Ibiza, La Nave Salinas and La Galería Ibiza add a note of colour to this kaleidoscopic island where there is no shortage of foreign flavour: it’s a world tour without ever leaving Ibiza. If you want to start by heading for the other side of the Atlantic, there are the tasty and very pop-

ular Mexican tacos at Taco Paco and the tasty grilled meats at Pau Brasil, a kind of tropical oasis on the highway to Santa Gertrudis. Moving on to Peruvian food, there’s Can Limó and its tropical ceviche with snakelocks anemone, and the La Gaia restaurant, where chef Óscar Molina offers sophisticated Nikkei proposals, such as Salmon tiradito with scallops and sea urchin sauce.

And now, with one foot in Asia, let’s try the delicious sushi at Nagai, Sushiya Aoyama and Pacha Restaurant and the aromatic Indian cuisine at Ancient People and Kathmandu. Or let us continue on to southeast Asia, whose coco milk, ginger, red curry, coriander and lemongrass lead us to the carefully-prepared Thai cuisine at POM or the traditional recipes at Ca Na Hathai. Exotic flavours that give way to more traditional ones at European restaurants on the island that offer ancient flavours that have been updated with contemporary creations, and it doesn’t matter what language they speak. Because in those places aspiring to be cosmic there’s only one word that matters: Welcome!

BORAMY QUIERE LIARTE BORAMY WANT TO TIE YOU UP Solo así se explica, por ejemplo, su cuLa primera vez que Boramy visitó Lío se dijo a sí mismo “aquí lo reventaría”. No lo rioso encuentro con Cristiano Ronaldo en sabía entonces, pero ese pensamiento tuvo Lío. “Esa noche no pinchaba, iba a Lío de algo de profético. Este DJ open format lleva visita”, explica Boramy. “Me lo encontré toda la temporada reventando las noches de en la cabina con sus amigos y me contaron que querían verme al día siguiente, pero que los domingos en Lío con su fiesta Líame.

Antes de explicar quién es Boramy, debe- era imposible, así que, por petición popular, ríamos contar qué hace. Suele estar especializado en hip la jet set de la capital lleva años (11 ni más hop, pero sus ritmos pasan por el soul, el funk, ni menos) disfrutando de su buen hacer tras disco, trap, R&B, house, afrobeat, moombahton, los platos en una de las fiestas con más solera salsa... Puede que la personalidad multicultural de la noche madrileña.

También ha pinchado en Marbella, en de Boramy (parisino, de origen camboyano y residente en Madrid) haya ayudado a crearle la Fashion Week de Milán y en un sinfín de sitios más, pero desde hace años su segunda un gusto musical tan ecléctico.

Sea como fuere, los DJ open format no gozan casa está en Ibiza. The first time Boramy visited Lío he said to himself, “I’d explode this place.” He didn’t know it at the time, but it would be prophetic.

On Sunday nights for the whole season this Open-Format DJ has been having a blast with his Líame party.

Before explaining just who Boramy is, we should say what he does. For those unfamiliar with the term, an Open-Format DJ is one who plays a wide range of genres.

He tends to be a specialist in hip hop, but he also plays soul, funk, disco, trap, R&B, house, Afrobeat, moombahton, salsa... Maybe it’s Boramy’s multicultural background (a Parisian of Cambodian origin who lives in Madrid) that has helped him create such an eclectic musical offering.

Whatever the case, the Open-Format DJs are not as popular as those who specialise in electronic music, as Boramy himself recognises. “The best Open-Format DJs are on a closed circuit of the most exclusive parties in the world. They tend to be recognised by a very select clientele, far from the larger public.” Boramy represents this selectivity to perfection.

For example that’s the only way to explain his curious encounter with Cristiano Ronaldo at Lío. “I wasn’t working that night, I just dropped by Lío to visit,” explains Boramy. “I found him in the cabin with his friends and they said they wanted to see me the next day, but that was impossible so, by popular petition, I ended up going home for my computer and playing for them that same night.” And the Real Madrid footballer is not the only one who knows him. For years (11 no less) Madrid’s jet set has been enjoying his fine work in one of the top parties in the capital.

He’s also worked in Marbella, in the Fashion Week in Milan, and in an endless number of other places, but for years now his second home is in Ibiza. He says Lío is the most special of the places where he works because of the people who frequent it and for the artists who put on their show each night; they often stay on for his session to enjoy the music. Even so, Boramy always has an eye out for new trends that come from other places, like Bali or Mykonos.

He’s clear about one thing: Open-Format DJs are going to win the night.

LÍO, EL ESPECTÁCULO ERES TÚ Lío tiene los mejores acróbatas, bailarines y cantantes de la isla, pero si vas a este lugar lo más probable es que, para el final de la velada, no prestes tanta atención al espectáculo. Lo más probable es que acabes formando parte de él. Una de las críticas más recurrentes del actual panorama ibicenco es que hay muchos espectadores y pocos actores, que la gente se limita a dejarse impresionar con una pasividad catódica. Quien diga esto no ha estado nunca en Lío.

En pocos locales (de Ibiza y del mundo) se puede ver cómo espectáculo y público se integran de esta forma, trasladando la fiesta del escenario a la mesa, participando en una comunión de buen rollo y diversión que acaba de contagiar hasta al más estirado.

Impresiona sin duda ver a los más prestigiosos acróbatas realizar unos números únicos en su género. Pero casi impresiona más ver a la mesa de al lado, a la tuya, a ti mismo, transportados por la fiesta, abandonando el plato para corear, bailar y reír.

Después de siete temporadas en activo, Lío se ha convertido en un referente en su género. Muchos lo comparaban en sus inicios con el Moulin Rouge, pero después de una última temporada apoteósica, es más certero compararlo con la película homónima de Baz Luhrmann que con el mítico local parisino.

Porque la magia colorista, el ambiente, las sensaciones que uno experimenta en este local son difícilmente comparables. Al menos con algo que suceda en la vida real.

LÍO, WHERE THE SHOW IS YOU Lío has the best acrobats, dancers and singers on the island, but if you go there, it’s very possible that at the end of the evening you may not be paying very much attention to the show. Because you may be part of it. One of the most common criticisms of the current Ibiza scene is that there are many spectators but few actors, that too many people just sit back passively waiting to be impressed.

Well, whoever says that obviously hasn’t ever been in Lío.

In few places (in Ibiza or anywhere else in the world) is it possisble to see a show and an audience come together this way: the on-stage party comes to the tables, and the good vibes and fun end up amusing everyone, no matter how stuffy they are.

It’s impressive to see the most prestigious acrobats performing unique acts. But it’s almost more impressive to see people at the nearby table –your table, you– thrill to the party, forgetting about the food so as to sing along, dance and laugh.

After seven seasons, Lío has become a point of reference in its genre. At the start, many people compared it to the Moulin Rouge, but after this last fabulous season a more apt comparison would be to the film of the same name directed by Baz Luhrmann than to the mythic Parisian nightspot.

Because the colourful magic, the ambience and the sensations one experiences here are hard to compare with anything. At least with anything that goes on in real life.

BAILAR SENTADOS EN PACHA DANCING IN YOUR SEAT AT PACHA En la cultura latina la comida tiene un importante componente social. La gastronomía se convierte en un placer grupal, los platos, en la excusa para compartir algo más que una mesa.Tirando de refranero popular, la música tiene el poder de relajar al más nervioso, sirve de canalizador de emociones y de vía de escape de los problemas. Estos dos ingredientes han sido la base de la receta de El Restaurante. Y el resultado no puede ser más apetecible.

La idea es que lo que puede ser un temazo en la pista de baile igual no funciona para una distendida sobremesa. “Nuestros artistas residentes preparan una sesión especial inspirada en los 80 y 90, con aire divertido y fresco, siguiendo la filosofía gastronómica del restaurante”, comenta Jessica Capaz McCarthy, directora musical de Pacha. La selección de los DJ, así, funciona como un ingrediente más y va subiendo en cadencia a medida que avanza la velada. Los comensales están invitados a la discoteca, así que muchos de ellos se van animando con la sobremesa.

“Incluso acaban bailando frente a la mesa o se animan a tomar unas copas en la barra”, añade Alessandro Boscolo, director de El Restaurante. A fin de cuentas la cocina es lo más importante, pero hablamos de mucho más que de simple comida..

El Restaurante Pacha se encuentra en las tripas de la discoteca más auténtica de la isla.

Su terraza ajardinada, con muros encalados y decoración sofisticada, se convierte en el mejor escenario para conjugar música y gastronomía. Su cocina se basa en el producto local para componer recetas exóticas, próximas, frescas, divertidas. Su música también le confiere una personalidad propia, buscando un estilo independiente al de las distintas fiestas que se suceden en Pacha.

When it comes to Latino culture, food plays a central role in socialising. Eating is a pleasure enjoyed with other people and food an excuse to share something more than just the same table. On the other hand, we all know that music has the power to relax even the most nervous people, helping channel emotions and offering an opportunity to forget about our problems. These are the two ingredients in the recipe for El Restaurante and the combination is sure to please.

The Pacha restaurant is located in the heart of the most authentic club on the island.

Its garden terrace, with whitewashed walls and sophisticated décor, is a place where good food and music go hand-in-hand. The former uses local produce to create exotic, locally inspired, fresh and exciting recipes, while the latter gives the establishment its own personality, with a style that is different from the portfolio of events at the Pacha club.

“We chose more mature, less commercial music, with a nod to the 1980s and 1990s,” remarks Alessandro Bóscolo, manager of the restaurant, acknowledging that while a song may be a dance-floor hit, it’s not always the best thing to listen to while you’re having a meal. The choice of DJs is just another ingredient in the recipe, building up the music as the night goes on and, with a free pass for the nightclub, many of the diners find themselves getting ready for the night to come. Some even end up dancing in front of the table or having a few drinks at the bar. But at the end of the day, as in any restaurant, the food is the star of the show, although in this case, the experience goes far beyond mere culinary delights.

Born and raised in Morocco, she came to Spain at 14, and from here went to Senegal, and from Senegal to Ibiza in 2014. Ya hemos perdido la cuenta de las veces que lo ha hecho. Pero un año más la fiesta de Sven Väth se ha colocado entre lo mejorcito de la temporada. El hombre detrás de Cocoon sigue imbatible, al frente de una propuesta que sigue siendo atractiva para la mayoría de aficionados a la música electrónica. Para su última cita, el 2 de octubre, estará rodeado de excelentes pinchadiscos: DJ Koze y Henrik Schwartz, en formato de live, serán los encargados de animar la terraza; y Adam Beyer, Ilario Alicante y la productora Dana Ruh en el interior, tirando de bombo y un intenso 4x4. | We’ve lost count of how many times they’ve managed it. Este año, en el que festejaban el cincuenta aniversario del Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart’s Club Band, han seguido poniendo luz y color a las noches ibicencas. El espíritu de los 60, con toda su magia y singularidad, ha inundado una temporada más el club de las cerezas. El punto más alto lo alcanzaron con la actuación de la legendaria Blues Brothers Band, que contaba con Steve Cropper y Lou Marini, miembros originales del grupo. El 2 de octubre tendrá lugar su despedida con Victor Nebot y DJ Domi a los platos. | Mondays in Ibiza wouldn’t be the same without the island’s most charismatic party: Flower Power. This year, while celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, they’ve continued to bring light and colour to Ibiza’s nightlife. Once again this season, the spirit of the 60s, with all its magic and unique character, has invaded the two cherries club. En el disco podemos escuchar una nueva faceta del responsable de Ellum mucho más melódica e introspectiva. Un avance en ciertos aspectos, pero que también nos hace añorar al Maceo Plex de los últimos años. Por eso mismo se agradece un tema como 5th Dimension Groove, junto a Swayzak. Un track que ha aparecido como la referencia número 41 de su sello, al margen del LP, y que no rehuye la intensidad, los bajos gordos y el subidón pleno de antaño. ¡Maceo, vuelve con nosotros! | The American’s having an amazing year.

Aside from his successful night at Pacha Ibiza, there was the launch of his second album, Solar, dedicated to his three-year-old son. This work shows a new side to the guy behind Ellum, much more melodic and introspective. It’s a step forward in some respects, but makes us long for the Maceo Plex of recent years. That’s why it’s great to hear a track like 5th Dimension Groove, with Swayzak. Launched by his record label as track number 41, unrelated to the LP, this is a piece that embraces the intensity, deep base and full-on climax of old. Maceo, come back to us!

Nacido en Nueva Jersey, al calor de aquella corriente conocida como Jersey House, su carrera en estas tres últimas décadas es digna de aplauso. Por ese motivo la serie DJ Kicks le ha encomendado la edición de su último DJ-Kicks. En esta sesión hace memoria de toda la música que le ha acompañado. Suena soul, funk, house y algo de boogie. “Es como si te llevara de viaje por Nueva York", comentaba recientemente. Para celebrarlo, el día 9 de octubre estará pinchando en una fiesta organizada por DC-10. No hay excusa para perderse a esta leyenda del house. | A name like Kerri Chandler has very little left to prove. Born in New York and raised in the heart of that trend known as Jersey House, his career over these last three decades is well deserving of praise. Which is why the DJ Kicks series has commissioned him for its latest offering.

It’s a mix that pays homage to the music that’s always been at his side. There’s soul, funk, house and a touch of boogie. “It’s like me taking you for a walk in New York,” he explained recently. Otra dirección que apuntarse para los que la prefieren fina es Enfarinarte, en Sant Carles, donde además encontrarás un rico tiramisú. ▸ There are no shortage of places on the island to enjoy the doyenne of Italian cuisine. But to make your life easier, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite pizzerias so you don’t have to: if you’re looking for authentic Neapolitan pizza, head for Ángolo, one of the last restaurants as you reach the Plaza del Parque in Ibiza Town. However, if you prefer your base thicker, with combinations of generously served toppings, Pummà at the end of the old port will be sure to give your taste buds a workout. Another option for fans of thin and crispy is Enfarinarte, in Sant Carles, which also has a delicious tiramisu.
