BOARD OF DIRECTORS A Message from the CEO, Larry Fladager With summer winding down, many of our local businesses are hoping for a busy fall to bounce back from what has been a slow season for many. The economy of late has been sluggish and that’s had an effect on many of our local businesses in and around Prince Albert. Despite the challenges however, there are signs of improvement around the province and statistics from several sectors have shown growth including, retail sales and manufacturing. Our resource sector remains slow, resulting in layoffs and closures, but the overall outlook from the Conference Board of Canada projects some growth yet this year. With a slow economy, many business owners have been working on new ways to promote their business and keep consumer dollars local, such as short promotional videos and more promotion through social media. These are important tools for business owners and, coupled with traditional advertising such as radio, newspapers and TV, can help spread your message to an even larger audience. Of course, networking and face-to-face meetings are also a great way to meet new people and discuss ideas and the Chamber would like to thank our many members for their participation and support of the Chamber as we embark on a busy fall events season. Without the support of our members, our work as advocates for local business would not be possible, and we want all our members to know that we appreciate your commitment to business in Prince Albert. The Chamber enjoys meeting and talking with our members on a regular basis and hosted a Member Appreciation BBQ on August 25 to say ‘thank you’ to our members for their continued support. Nearly 100 Chamber business members joined us for the barbecue. Photos from the Member Appreciation BBQ can be found on Page 6. The Chamber is looking forward to another busy fall season of networking and events for our members and I would encourage you to join us for some of our upcoming luncheons and after-hours business mixers. The Chamber is hosting the Prince Albert Raiders at a luncheon September 14, and for our non-profit members, we will be hosting a forum September 22 to talk about board governance and promotion. This Non-Profit Leadership Forum will also be a chance to meet the local business community and business owners are encouraged to join us from 3:30-5 p.m. that day to learn more about our various non-profit groups. On October 19th, the Chamber will host a Small Business Trade Show and luncheon at the Ches Leach Lounge. All our upcoming events can be found on our website at www.princealbertchamber.com. We hope to see all our members join us for these exciting business events. September 2016

Chamber of Commerce Welcomes New Board Chair The Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome Mr. Gordon Jahn as the new Chair of the Chamber Board of Directors. Mr. Jahn, FCPA, CPA, with MNP will act as board chair for the 2016-17 year, continuing his long record of service with the local Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Jahn will be officially installed as board chair at the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting September 8. Mr. Jahn has been an active member of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors since joining the Chamber’s investment and growth committee a few years ago. He also served on the Chamber’s government affairs and finance committees and joined the Board of Directors in 2013, serving as treasurer and First Vice-Chair. A member of the team at MNP, Mr. Jahn is a Chartered Professional Accountant and was named a Fellow Chartered Professional Accountant for his work with the Provincial Institute of Chartered Accountants for Saskatchewan. Mr. Jahn served on two committees with the organization for eight consecutive years. A lifelong resident of Prince Albert, Mr. Jahn has been working in the financial services industry for 36 years, and worked with Woodhouse Tucker before it merged with MNP in 2000. Since that time, the local office has grown from six partners and 18 people to an office of 40. MNP is now the fifth-largest accounting firm in Canada, with 60 offices across the country. Mr. Jahn specializes in assurance services, including business and public entities, Non-profit organizations and First Nations. “I’m a service line kind of person. I like helping people achieve their goals,” he adds. “I’m a problem solver, so to be able to help someone out, that’s one of the things I enjoy the most.” Mr. Jahn learned a lot about business from his father, Warren, who started Clearview Glass in Prince Albert in the late 1960s. He is looking forward to continuing his work with the Chamber as Board Chair, promoting networking and education opportunities, and public debate on issues of interest to business members. He will also continue to advocate for an improved tax ratio for businesses, to bring them more in line with other Saskatchewan communities and make it easier to do business in Prince Albert. Mr. Jahn volunteered on a sub-committee in the inaugural year of the Samuel McLeod Business Awards, which recognize achievements in local business. Community volunteers – including individuals from Deloitte, Weyerhaeuser and the local media, with administrative support from the City of Prince Albert – first organized the event before it was taken over by the Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce. Jahn volunteered with the committee for 10 years, including a period of time as committee chair. Continued on Page 5 September 2016

Chamber of Commerce Welcomes New Board Chair Continued from Page 3 “It’s really about making sure you maintain relationships,” he adds of his work with the Chamber. “I think there’s more we could do as far as attraction, investment and growth in Prince Albert and around the region.” “You become acquainted with more than one perspective. Everyone brings something to the table ... working with the Chamber is rewarding.” Mr. Jahn and his wife Sonya have two children, Melissa, a social worker; and Carson, an associate advisor with RBC Dominion Securities. Outside of work, Mr. Jahn enjoys working in his yard, paddling and kayaking in the summer, and spends winters cheering on the Prince Albert Raiders. He also enjoys travelling and has been to every province in Canada, and Europe four times. One of his most memorable trips was one he and his wife took with their children to Ukraine in 2011. The family visited Sonya’s relatives near Tarnopol and spent three weeks in the region. “It was really a meaningful experience for all of us,” he says. Mr. Jahn and the entire Chamber board of directors will be formally recognized at the Chamber’s annual Chairman’s Night event November 3. The event will feature the installation of the Chamber’s newest board of directors, a silent auction and a keynote speech by legendary Canadian Football Star, Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons. Mr. Jahn takes over as board chair from Greg Breeze with Affinity Insurance. Mr. Breeze moves to the position of past chair, while Garrett Lawless from Transwest Air takes over as First Vice-Chair.
