PRESIDENT'S LETTER

The Board of Commissioners wants to thank all our patrons as the Palatine Park District gets back to our normal operations while the country returns to “business as usual.” It was difficult for everyone as our lives and regular schedules were disrupted by the rules we followed during the pandemic to keep our staff and our residents healthy. We are continuing to abide with current safety guidelines.

As winter approaches, please take a look at our quarterly Program Catalog that is mailed to every household in the district, check out our website at palatineparks.org or install the free Palatine Park District app on your phone or computer. You will find that we have programs and activities for every resident from tots to seniors. Do you want to stay active? Start at the two indoor walking tracks or visit the fitness center at the Community Center or the indoor pool at Harper College Volleyball, basketball and pickleball are scheduled weekly and are also available as drop-in games at several of our facilities.

If you like history, you must visit the Palatine Historical Society at the Clayson House Museum. Bring the whole family and learn how Palatine grew from a small quiet farming area to a bustling suburb. For an extra treat, visit during the month of December to see how Christmas was celebrated over a hundred years ago.

Enjoy the theater or music? Look up the offerings at Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center and the choral groups for children and adults. For outdoor winter activities, there is ice skating and cross-country skiing. Celebrating a child’s birthday? Let the park district staff help you plan a special event at Palatine Stables, the indoor pool at Harper College or one of our other facilities. Choices range from Bubble Soccer, Bounce Houses, Nerf Adventures, Inflatable Obstacle Courses, Magic and turf or gym parties. Make it a day to remember!

If you are looking for an affordable place to hold an event, you might want to consider renting one of the many indoor facilities that the park district has. For instance, Falcon Park Recreation Center offers banquet rooms with space for everything from class reunions to wedding showers and receptions. The Palatine Hills Golf Course clubhouse is perfect for smaller get-togethers of friends or families, and Birchwood Recreation Center, Cutting Hall, the Community Center, and Palatine Stables also offer a variety of spaces and amenities for almost any special occasion. You will find reasonable pricing and helpful staff to make your occasion an event to remember!

The Board of Commissioners’ goal is to promote the district’s values through integrity, communication, accountability, collaboration, and leadership. Our meetings are open to the public and are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Palatine Village Hall. We welcome your input and comments at the meetings or by email.

Please enjoy your parks!

POLICIES

CONDUCT ORDINANCE

In 2004, the Board of Park Commissioners adopted a comprehensive Conduct Ordinance that relates to the use of the parks and property owned, operated, maintained, or controlled by Palatine Park District. A copy of this ordinance can be viewed at palatineparks.org under the District Information tab.

PARTICIPANT CODE OF CONDUCT

In addition to the Conduct Ordinance of 2004, the Board of Park Commissioners has also approved Administrative Policy 2.13.1, Code of Conduct. This code of conduct is the minimum expected behavior of every participant to ensure the safety and positive experience of all involved. The District uses a three pillar positive behavior program as the platform to define the expected behavior of all participants. This platform is aligned and consistent with the program used within the local elementary schools to create consistency among children and parents whether at school or play at the park district. This Code of Conduct is also aligned and tied to the District’s Anti-bullying policy and the District’s Participant Disciplinary Policy when rules and expectations of the positive behavior program are violated. A copy of this policy can be viewed online at palatineparks.org under the District Information tab.

A.D.A. COMPLIANCE

Palatine Park District intends to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act by making reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. If you have any questions about the Park District’s compliance policy please contact one of our A.D.A. compliance officers: Jim Holder, 148 W. Illinois Avenue, 847-705-5131, jholder@palatineparks.org or Colleen Palmer, 250 E. Wood Street, 847-496-6232, cpalmer@palatineparks.org.

CLASS DISMISSAL GUIDELINES

All children 11 and under are to remain in the classroom until a parent or authorized person comes into the classroom to pick them up. Parents are required to sign their child in and out of each class.

Parents of children ages 7–11 may opt to complete a Class Dismissal Permission Slip. This will allow the child to be released at the end of the scheduled class without a parent present. These forms are available from your child’s instructor. A separate form will be required for each class attended and every new session.

ADULT SUPERVISION

When not participating in a class, children under 7 years old must be accompanied by an adult while in Park District facilities.

CHILD ENDANGERMENT

Any authorized person who exhibits signs of an impaired condition due to alcohol or drugs will not be allowed to leave a program site with the child/children.

PHOTO POLICY

Palatine Park District may take photographs of participants enrolled in Park District programs, special events, or people on Park District properties and parks. These photographs may be used in print, online, or in other promotional materials and are for Park District use only.

SMOKING ORDINANCE

Smoking or any use of a tobacco product, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited within 50 feet of all entrances to Palatine Park District buildings, in all Park District facilities, in all wooded areas on Park District property, and in all other locations where signs are posted prohibiting smoking. Smoking is allowed at Palatine Hills Golf Course and on the north side of the Clubhouse deck. See Section 2.36, Code of Conduct, which can be found on palatineparks.org.

Facilities include all structures on Palatine Park District property including, but not limited to, swimming pools; skate, dog, and disc golf parks; riding arenas; shelters; gazebos; fishing pier; playgrounds; athletic fields; and amphitheater/bowl.

MIXED AGE, 3-5 YEAR OLDS

Ages: between 3 on or before or 5 after 9/1/23

There are many great benefits to a mixed age class. The older children learn to help their younger friends, and the younger children learn from the older ones. This class offers the kindergarten readiness skills of math, pre-reading, pre-writing, science, art, and large and small motor skills in an open-ended setting. It also encourages curiosity, creativity, self-discipline, independence, cooperative play, and making choices. This site offers choices of how many days a child can attend. Day Date Time Monthly Fee Prog

LUNCH ENRICHMENT

(PRESCHOOL ENROLLMENT NOT REQUIRED)

Lunch enrichment offers time to further improve pre-kindergarten skills. Children should bring a peanut-free lunch and a drink. The cost of lunch enrichment will be paid monthly. Days and times listed by location. Note that lunch enrichment begins and ends a few weeks later than preschool. Any child age 3–5 is welcome to be enrolled in Lunch Enrichment regardless of enrollment in preschool. Preschoolers can extend their day by adding Lunch Enrichment at their preschool location.

3-4 YEARS

Children are 4 when the school year starts and turn 5 during the year.

Age: 4 on or before 9/1/23 Max: 20 Four year old preschool offers activities and experiences that help children get ready for kindergarten. This includes open ended activities in the areas of math, pre-reading, pre-writing, science, art, and large and small motor skills. Kindergarten readiness also includes following directions, self-help skills, keeping track of belongings, and respecting others. We continue to encourage curiosity, creativity, self-discipline, independence, playing cooperatively, and making choices.

KIDS LIFE COACHING SERIES

NEW YEAR'S CHOCOLATE BRIDGES OF HOPE

Having hope is that bridge until we get to the other side. As we set intentions for the new year, we must act (strategies), and not just sit in hope. Smashing negative thoughts, knowing our strengths, using humor, having emotional self-control, and a growth mindset are just some of the techniques we will learn. Envisioning a better outcome for the year can be very motivating for kids. To dramatize the concept of hope, we will engineer a Hershey’s decked out Truss or Suspension chocolate candy bridge while we learn about the world’s most decadent bridges. Kids will experience a hurricane dramatization that will blow through the room to be sure their bridge is structurally sound! Participants may take their edible creation home or eat it on the spot! This workshop is truly the perfect blend of S.T.E.M. meets Life Coaching!

CONFIDENCE THROUGH COMEDY

Today is April Fool’s Day! Let’s move towards the end of the school year with loads of laughter. Whether your child is naturally funny or not, they will have the opportunity to develop and execute comedic skills, gain a higher sense of confidence with stacked successes, and perhaps learn to use humor in a social setting. Humor really can make the world a better place! Through close observation and lab experimentation, this high-energy comedy class will offer electrifying lessons on humor such as: Impersonations, prank humor, slapstick, comic strips, improv, character voices, ventriloquism, and witty situational. They will also understand when comedy is taken TOO far in life. What is a heckler? What is a laugh track? What is microphone technique and comic timing? And more humor discoveries and secrets! In a world immersed in technology where everyone is looking down at a phone or tablet, children could benefit from a healthy dose of interaction and comedy! All kids leave with a humor themed souvenir.

PARENT AND TOT AQUATICS (AGES 6 MONTHS – 4 YEARS)

Children learn elementary aquatic skills (i.e. breath control, submerging, and supported floats and also establish a foundation for stroke mechanics) with parental assistance.

PRESCHOOL AQUATICS (AGES 3–5)

Children build upon basic aquatic skills. With assisted instruction and encouraged independence, children begin to develop fundamentals for back and front crawl. Children tie together skills from previous levels. This entails practicing skills to attain higher stroke proficiency and swim greater distances. All skills will be performed independently.

LEVEL 1: INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS

Enter and exit water, blow bubbles, bob in water, open eyes to retrieve objects, supported floats, and glides.

LEVEL 2: FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS

Progress to performing unsupported floats. Learn basic movements for front and back crawl. For children who can submerge underwater comfortably.

LEVEL 3: STROKE DEVELOPMENT

Must be comfortable with deeper water. Children will build up to swimming 15 yards of front and back crawl with proper breathing technique.

LEVEL 4: STROKE IMPROVEMENT

Children learn the butterfly stroke and open turns. They are also taught new kicking techniques used for two minutes of treading water.

LEVEL 5: STROKE REFINEMENT

Children practice all competitive strokes and must perform them properly over longer distances (up to 50 yards per stroke). They also learn competitive turns and various deep water surface dives.

Palatine Tiger Sharks Swim Team is a multi-ability-level program that offers competitive opportunities, technique development, and fun for swimmers ages 6 and older. The swim team is divided into progressive groups. Open tryouts are held twice a year in March and August. If there is space available, new swimmers may join at any time by contacting the swim office at 847.202.3240 to schedule a tryout. Team coaches make the final determination for group placement and advancement to the next level. Group sizes may be limited.

Following a tryout, coaches will provide approximate practice times and locations. These are subject to pool availability and may change.

Registration for Swim Team: Registration during regular office hours at any Palatine Park District facility Swim Team requires a separate registration form

All fees are paid at the time of registration

Additional fee for Non-residents

Palatine Park District registration fees do not cover all Swim Team expenses so additional Swim Team fees are necessary and are the same for residents and non-residents Swim Team fees and escrow costs vary for each group

Families with multiple swimmers receive a $15 discount starting with the third swimmer

T-shirts are available on a limited basis for later registration and are first-come, first-served.

Each member of the Tiger Sharks Swim Team must be a member of Illinois Swimming and United States Swimming.

Escrow covers costs of entry for individual and relay events at swim meets. To become a member of USA Swimming, each family wil be responsible for registering their swimmer separately. Once you have registered for the Tiger Sharks Swim Team, specific information will be provided regarding the steps to register for USA Swimming. Unused escrow is refundable at the end of the season by contacting the swim board (escrow).

Swim Team parents are required to volunteer during each of their swimmer’s sessions at all Tiger Shark hosted meets. Failure to volunteer for any home meet results in a charge of $100 for each meet session.

Families can offset the cost of future swim team fees by participating in the team’s ongoing fundraising opportunities.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

BASIC

CARDIO AND STRENGTH CONDITIONING: This class will focus on low weight and high repetition exercises aimed to tone the entire body. Minimal equipment will be used for this class.Bringing a mat is recommended.

ZUMBA®: This class takes the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorieburning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Zumba® Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise.

PREMIUM

360 TONING: This class focuses on strengthening and toning all major muscle groups. Each class varies by using a multitude of equipment and methods.

CARDIO STRETCH: Combines dance, calisthenics and plyometrics, plus stretching for a greater range of movement.

TABATA: This high intensity interval training combines cardio and strength exercises in 4-minute blocks. This is a fast paced, fun, calorie burning workout. Class is adapted to all fitness levels.

SOUL FUSION: Low impact, high intensity, body transforming format using Pilates and Yoga inspired moves to sculpt long, lean muscles, and burn fat.

BALANCE AND STRENGTH: Focus on stability to improve balance, strength, and flexibility while strengthening your core.

STRENGTH AND STRETCH: Exercisers will focus on building strength and flexibility with this full body tone and stretch from your head to your toes.

CARDIO TRANSFORM: Transform your body and burn fat with this HIIT workout. A step platform will be used to increase the intensity of this workout to sculpt your body into the shape you want.

STEP & CORE: High intensity step aerobics with functional core strengthening.

ZUMBA® TONING: Zumba® Toning is for those who want a dance party, but also want to tone and sculpt muscles! The challenge of adding resistance by using Zumba® Toning Sticks (or light weights), helps you focus on specific muscle groups, so you (and your muscles) stay engaged.

It covers basic horsemanship skills including safety, grooming, tacking, and basic riding skills, thus building a foundation for our continuing riding program. Three lessons are non-riding. Students will learn to enter a horse's stall and lead the horse from its stall to the arena. They will also learn to tighten the girth and adjust their stirrups, techniques to properly mount a horse, the proper dismounting procedures, and returning the horse to its stall. As students become proficient with these skills actual riding time will increase accordingly. Students and parents should also be aware that due to the nature of the horse, behaviors such as spooking, biting, kicking, bucking, and playing will occur. How to handle these situations as a rider are an integral part of horsemanship and will be addressed in lessons. Please note that any session of Group Riding Lesson fees can be pro-rated to accommodate a participant's schedule, such as family vacations, school events, or any absence that would be known at the time of registration. This can only be done in person at the Stable facility. DAY DATE TIME R/NR PROG# AGE: 7-15 YEARS M 1/23-3/6 4:30pm-5:30pm
