Publisher's Note Welcome to 2022! We are still in the pandemic which will hopefully turn the corner soon. February 1 welcomes the Lunar New Year (Year of the Tiger), followed by Valentine’s Day and Family Day. Just when the days were feeling extremely short, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Daylight Saving starts March 13, school spring break is March 14-22, and spring arrives on March 20. Looking back, Christmas was wonderful! Santa arrived by boat on December 5, and we were able to enjoy old fashioned horse drawn carriage rides around the village thanks to the Steveston Merchants Association and Tourism Richmond. Steveston’s merchants did a beautiful job creating festive displays and a big congratulations to Harmony Dental Studio for winning the grand prize! To complete the perfect holiday scene, we woke up on Christmas Day to a magical snowfall. On the cover is Geoffrey Sun, owner of Mr. Gold, a gelato and afternoon tea destination that offers premium gelato with techniques that originate from nineteenth-century Europe. They also serve afternoon tea and authentic Italian pastries, croissants, lemon tarts, macarons, cupcakes, sandwiches, and four types of Italian-

In this issue read about Shari Linde, owner of Advantage Speech-Language Pathology. Her thriving office is located on Chatham Street. Shari is currently the Chair of Speech-Language & Audiology Canada. Advantage SLP provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for children, adolescents, and adults. The team of speechlanguage pathologists sees clients of all ages with all types of communication and feeding/ swallowing concerns. We welcome Parm Bains, MP to his new location on Chatham Street (where Kenny Chui’s office was previously). The community was saddened to lose Marylin Bitcon, owner of Meow & Bark Avenue. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on February 9 at Ocean View Funeral Home. It won't be long now until the days are longer and warmer and we can start working in our gardens, biking along the river, and dining on outdoor patios in this beautiful seaside village.

Steveston's Healthy and Philanthropic Gelato Shop Story by Sarah Gordon

Geoffrey Sun has been attracted to the colour gold since he was a child. Perhaps it has to do with his surname? Geoffrey is the director of Mr. Gold Holdings Ltd. His dream to launch a “golden brand” came to fruition in 2019 when he opened Mr. Gold. The historic Moncton Street storefront was built by Iwajiro Wakida and was part of Steveston’s reconstruction in the early 1900s. A fun fact: The building was used as a film set for the television program Once Upon a Time.
A major renovation was required to transform the space into a cozy parlour-like atmosphere. A variety of seating areas have been created by pairing tables with an assortment of upholstered armchairs. Gold wall mouldings add to the ornate theme with some accent walls painted royal blue. An eye-catching pink and blue painting titled “Blue Orchid Towards the Sun,” is nestled between two slim shelves displaying fine china cups and saucers. A long glass display case is where you will find a rainbow of assorted gelato.
“It was a lucky coincidence that we found this location. Customers are excited to come inside.”
The store’s roots began in Saskatchewan under a different name with a focus on desserts. After moving to Richmond, Geoffrey saw an opportunity to open his handcrafted gelato shop. He chose Steveston based on its beautiful location, and he was also aware the village is a tourist destination.

He mentions, “Steveston’s store owners and residents are very kind and helpful.” At any time, there are 36 flavours in the display case; some of the selections change weekly. Based on the season, there are as many as 100 flavours in store. Geoffrey says, “Pistachio, mango and Mama’s lemon pie are some of the most popular choices.” Other temptations include tried and true classics like chocolate and vanilla alongside unique tastes such as tiramisu and whiskey cream. Mr. Gold’s artisanal gelato is made with fresh fruit, whole nuts, Avalon organic milk, cream, and cane sugar. The shop is dedicated to making premium gelato with techniques that originate from nineteenth-century Europe. Vegan gelato and sorbets are also sold.
“Mr. Gold’s is the gold standard of gelato.” In addition to the vast range of gelatos already offered, custom orders are also welcomed. Customers can suggest an idea and their oneof-a-kind flavours can be created. The store is open year-round (with reduced winter hours) and while it is not typically the season to stroll along the boardwalk and eat gelato, it can certainly be an indoor treat, however, Mr. Gold’s is not limited to gelato. They also serve authentic Italian pastries, croissants, lemon tarts, macarons, cupcakes, sandwiches, and four types of Italian-style paninis to enjoy

at the restaurant or you can place an order for takeout. Customers also have the choice to make their panini a meal by adding salad, tea, and gelato. Afternoon tea is another key part of the business. The menu offers three teas: The Elegant Afternoon Tea, The Golden Afternoon Tea and Mr. Gold’s Family Party Tower.

Depending on your order, the tiered cake stands may include an enticing assortment of savoury locally sourced seafood selections such as smoked salmon, black truffle, horseradish on pumpernickel bread and prawn, avocado and salmon roe with basil mayonnaise. Sweet items may include finger sandwiches, scones, lemon meringue tarts, chocolate mousse cake and tea at different price points to

accommodate any size of group. Mr. Gold also provides kid-friendly options. Events of all kinds can be hosted at the restaurant, you envision it, and Mr. Gold can make it happen. promotional events have taken place including an afternoon tea for princesses. Offsite, Mr. Gold’s gelato cart can be hired for private events. If you would like to have afternoon tea at home you can order online, and Uber will make the delivery. If you have a craving for gelato but don’t want to leave home, in just two hours Mr. Gold will deliver gelato right to your doorstep. Every order is carefully packed to ensure quality upon delivery. Mr. Gold is a franchise with additional storefronts operating in Kelowna, Maple Ridge, and Victoria and more locations are on the way. Geoffrey operates the Steveston shop with the assistance of his wife and son.
Geoffrey says, “We understand the importance of a strong and united community.” The business actively participates in fundraising and community work. Throughout the pandemic, volunteers have prepared gelato in cups which they pack in freezer boxes and transport to frontline workers in gratitude for their dedicated efforts. Recipients have included the Vancouver Police Foundation, Richmond Fire and Rescue, Richmond Hospital, and many other Lower Mainland hospitals. The company plans to continue participating in future community work.

Shari Linde is living her dream as the founder, owner, and director of Advantage SpeechLanguage Pathology. While she was in high school, Shari was curious about what career would be her best match; she took an aptitude test and discovered speech-language pathology was number one on the list. She headed off to the University of Western Ontario where she received her M.Sc., and the rest is history.

She also has extensive experience addressing swallowing impairments. Shari is on the Registry of Autism Service Providers in B.C., with designations as a speechlanguage pathologist and behaviour consultant.
She has been working as a speech-language

After working out of her home for many years, Shari opened Advantage SLP’s office space on Chatham Street in 2017. She says, “It has really evolved. I blinked, and it became full time. Before long I had brought on more and more people. The business has grown to a staff of four full-time and 18 part-time SLPs, four assistants, four administrators, and 12 volunteers.” Advantage Speech-Language Pathology provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for children, adolescents, and adults. The team of speech-language pathologists sees clients of all ages with all types of communication and feeding/swallowing concerns. The multilingual team provides services in 13 languages. Shari comments, “We have the best therapists and staff.” Services are provided in the office in Steveston as well as off-site in home, school, and community settings around the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley. Teletherapy services are also available. Advantage SLP works with children and youth who have many different communication difficulties. The SLP team develops individualized programs to meet a child’s specific needs. Areas of service include articulation and speech sound production, augmentative communication, autism spectrum disorders, hearing-related communication problems, language delay, learning disabilities, (including challenges with reading and writing), neurologically-based communication disorders (such as challenges resulting from acquired brain injury or cerebral palsy), social/pragmatic language, stuttering, tongue thrust, feeding and swallowing challenges, and voice disorders.
In addition, Advantage SLP provides assessment and treatment services to adults with a wide variety of challenges. These include acquired brain injuries, such as those caused by strokes or traumatic injuries, progressive neurological conditions (such as Parkinson’s Disease), difficulties with voice production as experienced by high occupational voice users such as singers or teachers, stuttering, foreign accent modification, speech sound difficulties (including persistent lisps), problems with swallowing, and communication challenges which interfere with academic or vocational success (for example, reading and writing difficulties). Individualized programs for adults are set up to meet the needs of each client. Treatment is typically done on a one-to-one basis. Where appropriate, group treatment options may also be available, such as for stuttering treatment or foreign accent modification.

advantageous for people who are homebound after experiencing a stroke. Some clients opt for home visits including those who have had a brain injury or swallowing issues. Some children do better at home with an SLP. Other clients have trouble arranging in-person visits or face challenges with transportation.

Like most businesses, the office closed during the lockdown in March 2020, and when it reopened the method of operating became, and continues to be, a hybrid between in-person and off-site appointments and teletherapy by Zoom. Zoom has opened opportunities that previously did not exist. For example, Shari now has two Alberta based therapists working for her. Teletherapy has changed how some clients are seen. Older kids and adults have been receptive to the flexibility of being able to Zoom from home. Younger clients and their families benefit from coaching and education in their home environment. Shari mentions, “Teletherapy will certainly carry on after the pandemic. It has expanded our world; clients now come from all over B.C. Absenteeism has gone down significantly and many clients often do better on Zoom. We can run groups on Zoom; some meet from as far away as Fort St. John.” Teletherapy is also

In-person visits are extremely rewarding for children. Shari says, “They often refer to their time with their SLP as ‘talk play’ and that is a very good description!” Shari says, “It is so rewarding when you see kids who are struggling to communicate, and we can help them to get their messages across, or parents tell us something we’ve been practicing with their child is working at home. These are signs of validation that what we are doing is making a difference.” She adds, “We do change lives.” Shari concludes, “I am blessed to be in a job I love.
