The biggest community event of the year is coming up. THE 75TH STEVESTON SALMON FESTIVAL: Reimagined Festival with Fun and Safety in Mind Story by Sarah Gordon

It has been a Steveston tradition for 75 years and although the pandemic has temporarily altered the event as we know it, the Steveston Salmon Festival is going on in a reimagined format with a focus on family, fun and fitness. The festival will take place on July 1, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year the traditional parade will be replaced by festival zones stretching from Garry Point Park to Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. Put on your comfy shoes, dress in your Canada Day red and white and walk, cycle, wheelchair, or scooter to visit the different sites where you will find live music, exhibitions, and more. Steveston merchants will also be participating so be sure to visit their businesses. The Steveston Salmon Festival dates back to July 1, 1946. It was originally called the Salmon Queen Carnival and was an opportunity for the canneries and other Steveston businesses to 8
sponsor a candidate to be known as the Salmon Queen. In 1978, the Salmon Queen Carnival was officially renamed the Steveston Salmon Festival, and the last Salmon Queen was crowned in 1986. Dolly Hopkins has joined the festival this year as artistic director. Dolly has plenty of experience organizing large scale events in Richmond; she’s been the Richmond Maritime Festival’s creative director for the last 11 years.

The festival was held virtually for the last two years. The Steveston Community Society, led by President Al Sakai, is working closely with the City of Richmond and a team of hard-working volunteers to make the return of the in-person event a smooth-running operation that meets COVID-19 safety plans.

It is a sure-fire way to simplify your Canada Day backyard barbecue while supporting the Steveston Community Society. Pre-orders began on May 16, and order pick-ups take place on June 30 at the Steveston Community Centre.
“By spreading the events over a 2.5-kilometre radius around Steveston and over a six-hour time span, people will have the ability to pick and choose what areas they would like to visit,” Dolly says.
While some of the festival’s offerings have changed, many mainstays have remained. For example, Sammy’s Fun Zone will return to Steveston Park. There will be plenty of family-friendly and fun activities for children to participate in although bouncy castles will not be present this year.
Leading up to Canada’s birthday, the Pacific Rim Kite Festival (June 25-26) will kick things off and get people in the celebratory spirit. There will be plenty to see in the sky and on the ground during this event where the British Columbia Kitefliers Association will fly traditional, single, and multi-line kites. Video popups are also planned where kite flyers and visitors can share stories about Steveston and memories of past Salmon Festivals. Encore! Last year the wildly popular “Take and

Calling all car buffs – the popular Car Show returns with custom cars, classic cars, hot rods, and uniquely decorated cars. Doug Harder works tirelessly every year to organize this event. Plans are in the works to have 75 cars on site to celebrate the festival’s 75th year. A stage will feature entertainment with acts to be confirmed. Cars will be displayed on the east lawn adjacent to the baseball diamond. Festival visitors will certainly work up an appetite as they visit assorted zones. Food trucks will be located on the perimeter of the village, and people are encouraged to visit the village’s wide range of restaurants that will be selling food at their establishments. As a bonus, Al Sakai has been working with Richmond elementary and secondary school students to display their art at the returning Art Show.
The Steveston Rotary Club will be returning to the community centre parking lot and offering up their traditional Pancake Breakfast. Traditional activities will also be featured at this 75th Anniversary celebration including the Horticulture Show and the Japanese Cultural Show.

GMEN AT STEVESTON RAMEN SHOP: Great Food, Great Service Story by Sarah Gordon

Sometimes it’s rainy weather that brings customers to Gmen At Steveston Ramen Shop on a quest for a bowl of comforting warm noodles. Other times, it’s the seaside air that lures people to the restaurant’s patio to enjoy ramen and other signature Japanese dishes while appreciating a view of Steveston Harbour across the street. Tinn Chan, Takeru Kosuda and Minoru Suzuki opened the Steveston location in 2017. The partners got their start in the 1990s with Gyoza King on Robson Street in Vancouver.
Tinn says, “Minoru created some good ramen recipes and we thought, that’s tasty enough to serve our customers. We named the new menu item G(yozaKing)-men (men means noodle in Japanese). He adds, “There was also a popular Japanese detective TV series back in the 1970s named G-men (government men). We all love that series. At Gmen’s first location on Sexsmith Road in Richmond, we had the show playing endlessly on our TV.” Eventually, the restaurant relocated to Alexandra Road where it continues to operate.
“Minoru had always wanted to have a shop close to the water. We saw the listing, viewed the space, and knew we’d found our second Gmen location.” 26

“Once we started working in Steveston, we discovered this community is very warm. The people are so nice to each other. I can feel the Canadian spirit like the old days when I first came to Vancouver,” Tinn says. What do the partners love most about the community? “Of course, it’s the people! Secondly, it’s viewing the sunset from our patio.” Inside and outside the business you will spot collector motorcycles from Minoru’s personal collection. Tinn remarks, “If you love bikes, you will know those are rare items. One was showcased at a motorcycle show in Portland a few years ago.” Ordering is made easy with oversized menus
featuring photographs of selections posted on the exterior of the building and indoors. It’s no secret parking can be challenging to find in Steveston; Gmen has a paid lot behind the restaurant. Gmen's ramen dishes are made from original recipes. The Steveston restaurant offers more varieties and a lighter soup-based broth while the Alexandra Road location offers only heavy pork bone-based broth.
Whether you are new to eating ramen or a connoisseur, Gmen’s menu appeals to many tastes. In addition to dishes that include meat, Gmen offers vegetarian ramen, kale noodle and some other vegetarian options. They try to use as many local ingredients as possible although some must be imported from Japan. Tinn says, “One of our most unique ingredients is sea kelp (konbu). We use a lot of it for cooking.” What dishes does he recommend to guests who haven’t dined at Gmen? “I like our Shoyu Ramen and Shio Ramen so much. It takes lots of work to make our own shoyu base and shio (salt) base while most ramen shops are using instant soup base seasoning.”

He adds, “If you like spicy dishes, I suggest trying our RCMP (Red Chili Miso Pepper) Ramen or Spicy Chicken Ramen — that’s spicy chicken broth ramen topped with fried chicken. Many people are familiar with Japanese Miso (bean paste), and Miso Ramen is our best seller. Another customer favourite is TanTan Men, a spicy peanut butter and sesame thick broth ramen. It’s addictive! We also offer Vietnamese pho infused TLC (Tomato, Lime & Cilantro) Ramen. It’s great for summer, too.” Although one may not associate French fries with a ramen restaurant, Gmen’s BC (butter and cheese) fries are very popular.
“Usually, ramen shops serve cold noodles in the summer, and we do too. Come in and see what we have planned.” Another summertime treat Gmen serves up is house made soft ice cream. “The only problem is our machine has broken, so we are looking for help. If anyone knows how to repair it, please come see us. We will offer you free ice cream all summer!”

The three partners are extremely grateful for their loyal patrons. “Last winter, we had many local customers walk down to pick up their takeout orders, only to discover we were closed due to the snowstorm. The next day we saw many sad faces as they came to tell us how hungry they had been.” What is the secret of Gmen’s success? Tinn concludes, “I think it’s everything combined. Good food, good staff, a good vibe, and a good community. When we see customers love our food and service that’s the biggest reward.”

I have tried many kinds, but my body doesn’t to seem to absorb iron well. What can you suggest? Iron is a key element that is important in the body’s daily metabolism. It is required for growth, development, and oxygen management. Meats, beans, lentils, and nuts are some of the most common dietary sources of iron. How much iron we need to supplement with is very dependent on age, sex, and diet. Vegetarians require twice as much iron supplementation because our bodies cannot absorb the non-heme iron in plant sources as well as heme iron from animal sources. Taking a vitamin C tablet with meals or iron supplement will help. Polysaccharide iron complexes (eg. Feramax), and heme iron polypeptides (eg. New Roots Herbal’s Heme Iron with 5MTHF/folate, Vit.B12 and Vit.C) can dramatically improve absorption over a basic ferrous gluconate/sulfate/fumarate. Heme iron preparations have the added benefit of being already in a form that the red blood cells can use for carrying oxygen, so there tends to be a more immediate response in enhancing energy levels.
