October was a fun month in the village. Congratulations to the winner of the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl! Steveston Merchants Association awarded a grand prize of $1,000 to Splash Toy Shop. Trick-or-treaters flocked to the village in costumes on Halloween for a fun afternoon visiting participating merchants who handed out treats. Girls’ Night Out (November 23) is an evening dedicated to Christmas shopping and socializing. Visit our pop-up portrait inside the Steveston Museum for a free photo of you and your girlfriends! Holiday magic abounds in Steveston village throughout December. Winter in the Village is a collaboration between Tourism Richmond, the Steveston Merchants Association, and the City of Richmond. The fun begins with Santa's arrival, which is always a crowd-pleaser. Have your camera ready for the magical moment when Santa’s boat comes into view. Afterwards, head to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery to take photos with Santa; your family will cherish these moments. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is home to beautifully decorated and cleverly themed Christmas trees designed and sponsored by local merchants and community groups. Horse-drawn carriage rides add a touch of nostalgia as they circle the village, to the delight of riders and those watching. The

annual Christmas Classic Car Cruise features classic cars adorned with festive decorations. It’s a sight to see! Charming holiday window displays showcase the creativity of local businesses. Visit the oversized ornaments for classic selfie moments. Bundle up, grab your mug of hot chocolate and head to the eagerly awaited Santa Claus Parade. This beloved small neighbourhood event features floats, music, and, of course, Santa. Craft fairs are the place to head for one-of-akind gifts, and you will feel good knowing you are supporting local artisans. On the cover is Dr. Satveer, owner of Petsville Animal Hospital. His mission is for your pets to love visiting Petsville, where he treats cats, dogs, and exotics such as ferrets, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, and rabbits. PETSVILLE ANIMAL HOSPITAL: Making Visits to the Vet Fun Story by Sarah Gordon

Dr. Satveer and his wife, Ady, believe in making your pet’s visit to Petsville Animal Hospital as fun and stress-free as possible. Exam rooms with buckets of toys, a buffet of treats, and dog beds make a trip to the animal hospital feel more like home. Their mission is for your pets to love visiting Petsville, where Dr. Satveer treats cats, dogs, and exotics such as ferrets, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, and rabbits. He says, “We want your pet to run into our hospital and go right for the cookie jar that is always on the table by the computer.” Petsville opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 24, 2023.
“My work is my passion. Ady and I love taking care of pets in need.” He says, “Working together is the best, 8

especially now that we are expecting our first baby – it is great that I can spend more time with her at work. We are a great support to each other.” “Ady manages the hospital. With her at my side, I can focus on the patients and treatment. She oversees client relationships, inventory management, marketing, and financial management. She designed the whole hospital and made it more pet-friendly and homey.” Maple, their mischievous puppy, is the hospital’s mascot. She often comes in with Ady and loves to greet and give free kisses to everyone. The couple recently moved to Steveston from Burnaby. Dr. Satveer says, “I love Steveston’s slow pace and closeness to nature. I believe in making connections with the people I live or work with. In small communities, a connection is naturally easier. Neighbours know each other by name, wave at each other on the street, and often work together.” November 15, 2023 - February 15, 2024
Fear-free animals is the goal. “The fear-free approach extends throughout the entire hospital. This includes mats, hiding spaces, allowing cats to stay in their carriers or dogs in their family's lap, pre-visit medications, stress-free handling techniques, and larger factors like the design of the practice to include separate cat and dog areas.” Examining pets on a high table often adds to their stress; Dr. Satveer prefers to sit on the floor and approach them at their level. For anxious and aggressive pets, they provide no poke visits. Usually, a pet comes in two to three times a year; their visits most likely involve taking temperatures, vaccinations, and blood draws. For an anxious pet, a trip to the vet can become a negative association. A no poke visit increases your dog or cat’s comfort level by establishing a bond with staff members. Above all, this visit will not involve unpleasantries such as having a temperature taken or blood drawn. Pets that have learned to associate familiar voices and yummy treats with a clinic visit can hardly wait to get in the door!

House calls are advantageous if you have a pet that gets stressed going to the vet, transportation is a problem or your pet is susceptible to motion sickness. As well, Dr. Satveer can provide your pet euthanasia in the comfort of your home. The hospital provides primary and urgent care during and after business hours. They take emergency cases only during regular business hours, and 24-hour assistance is available. Petsville works with clients to understand their financial situations and to ensure no pet is denied basic care and treatment.

Petsville’s X-ray machine is a pediatric (humangrade) digital machine, which means there is less radiation exposure to pets and staff. The hospital has an oxygen recovery chamber for a speedy and smooth post-surgery recovery for small dogs and cats. Clients know the stress of having to leave their animals for a procedure. Petsville kindly sends post-surgery updates with a photo of the brave patient. All blood work and most fecal tests are done

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER Can I see my pharmacist for prescriptions now? The modern pharmacist is continually blessed with an ever-expanding scope of practice. For years now, BC pharmacists have been able to extend select prescriptions at their discretion, provide vaccine injections, and release several medications (vaccines and pills) without a physician’s prescription. Since June 2023, participating pharmacists can assess 21 minor ailments and direct medication therapy. This is part of BC Pharmacy’s “Minor Ailment and Contraceptive” program, which offers BC residents the ability to consult a participating pharmacist in person to assess the concern, prescribe medication therapy for the ailment as required, and advise whether the patient needs to consult a physician for further treatment. In many cases, the pharmacist can initiate the appropriate prescription medication therapy immediately and offer insights on monitoring parameters. We can do this, eg., for urinary tract infections, eye infections, dermatitis, and pinworms. ANAF CLUB 284:
Something for Everyone and Everyone is Welcome Story by Sarah Gordon

Dave Pennell was hard at work planning the 2024 entertainment calendar when we spoke about the ANAF Club 284. He is very excited about the musicians they are lining up. Dave says, “We are bringing in the best local bands around and the top acts in the Lower Mainland; it’s a fresh approach.”
The Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS) is Canada's oldest veteran and community service organization.
He and the volunteer management committee are working diligently to revitalize the club after COVID-19 left the 76-year-old ANAF 284 Steveston without reserve funds.
The organization stretches from coast to coast with a membership that includes those who have served as military, RCMP, provincial and municipal police, direct relatives of members and affiliated members.
Dave has been the club’s entertainment director since February 2023 and has been an ANAF member for many years. He has hung out with musicians most of his life and wants to give back to the community.
The original intent of ANAF clubs was to create a social environment for people who survived the war. Today, they accept membership from anyone interested in joining.
The goal is to increase interest and bring in more people to enjoy the club. It has been in its current location, below The Maple Residence, since 2012, when the senior’s residence opened. ANAF 284 provided the land and received a new clubhouse on the site in return. 20

Crowds have been growing with the roster of talent Club 284 has been showcasing. At one time, they had turnouts as small as 10 to 15 people; now, they often attract as many as 250. November 15, 2023 - February 15, 2024
“This 250-seat space with a big dance floor is an amazing venue to catch live bands in the heart of Steveston village.” Social media is the club’s primary method to spread the word, as they do not have an advertising budget. They post frequently, and you can watch numerous video clips as friends share their posts. Recent shows include Colin Wiebe, best known for singing and playing with Canadian legend Randy Bachman of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive for over a decade. Dave says, “Colin is an uber-talented artist, and we are so fortunate he plays here.” Angie Faith is the third generation of her family to entertain at Club 284; her grandfather and her dad, Johnny Fatiaki, have also rocked the house. Johnny Ferreria is a dynamo saxophone player who toured the world with the Colin James band and has accompanied some of the world’s best acts, including Robert Plant, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Winwood, and ZZ Top. Fans can look forward to his return on December 22 and 23, when he will play with the Grand Koolios as part of the 284 Blues Festival. “Johnny is owed a great deal of thanks for his

unselfish contribution and efforts to help this club.”
“The musicians have been great, I can’t stress that enough. They have offered their time and talent to help the ANAF Club.” Dave says. Weekly programming includes the free Wednesday jam night, which starts at 8:00 p.m. This is a chance for new performers to try the stage. Dave mentions that some 19-year-old musicians recently played and are booked to return. He finds this exciting as they represent Steveston’s next generation. On Thursday nights, people take to the dance floor for line dancing lessons. Every Saturday, bands take to the stage. The ladies’ auxiliary fundraising meat draws take place every Friday and Sunday; all revenue is donated to charitable groups. Dave says, “We are stringent about supporting local charities.” Other events to look forward to include the Club’s Shady Island Christmas party, with Yacht Rock performing on December 15. Earlier that day, they also hold a small Christmas party for kids with special guests Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Club 284 is hosting a Christmas craft fair on Sunday, November 26, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. If you are looking for a place to gather and ring in 2024, join your friends for a New Year’s celebration at the ANAF. To beat the January doldrums, Legends of the Jam featuring Colin Wiebe, Budd Marr (former member of Sweeney Todd), Dan Hare (March Hare Band), Johnny Ferreira, Ian Paxton (former member of March Hare Band) and Johnny Fatiaki will perform on January 12, 2024. Visit ANAF Club 284’s social media (Instagram and Facebook) @ Club284 Steveston and their website to discover more acts in the upcoming months. Everyone is welcome at Club 284; you do not have to be a member, although you will save money on cover charges for live acts and invest in your community. On Fridays, members pay only $5 and guests pay $10. On Saturdays,

We hope to be open seven days a week by Christmas.” The management committee also hopes to see the return of the Fisherman’s Lunch very soon, which is a very affordable and hearty meal. The Club’s menu has recently been updated and features pub fare at affordable prices.
