Happy St. Patrick's Day! We are all a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. From Shamrocks to Snakes and Guinness to The Blarney Stone, we are taking a look at some of the lesserknown facts about the world favorite Irish Holiday. St. Patrick – Neither Irish or named Patrick St. Patrick… Ireland… St. Patrick’s Day… Simple, right? The man wasn’t even Irish. He was actually born in Britain around the turn of the 4th century. At 16 years old Irish Raiders captured him in midst of an attack on his family’s estate. The Raiders then took him to Ireland and held him captive for 6 years. After escaping, he went back to England for religious training and was sent back to Ireland many years later as a Missionary. St. Patrick was actually born Maewyn Succat. According to legend, when he became a Priest, he changed his name to Patricius or Patrick. The name derives from the Latin term “Father Figure.” The Blarney Stone It’s supposed to give you “the gift of gab” but it can also give you a stiff neck and countless germs. The Blarney Stone is a must see tourist destination in Blarney Castle near Cork Ireland. Every year 400,000 visitor’s line up to kiss it in hopes of boasting their eloquence. It isn’t so easy to smooch the stone – one must sit on a ledge while someone holds their legs then bend over backwards while holding iron rails until your face is level with the stone. Congratulations! You have now kissed a surface that has been kissed by hundreds of thousands of people. Hopefully the gift of gab is worth the bacteria! The Shamrock St. Patrick is credited with taking Christianity to Ireland around A.D. 432 to sell his message. Irish legend says he
MARCH 2022
choose the Shamrock as symbol of the Christian Church. The leaves were meant to represent the Holy Trinity… the Father, the Son & the Holy Spirit joined together by a common stalk. Apparently the Shamrock campaign worked. By the time of St. Patrick’s death on March 17, 461, he had created a number of churches, schools and monasteries dedicated to the faith. St. Patrick’s Day Parade The first parade wasn’t held in Ireland, it began in the United States, well technically “The Colonies.” In 1762 Irish Soldiers serving in the English Army celebrated the holiday by marching through the streets of New York City. By 1848, the parade was an official city event. Today, nearly 3 million people line New York City streets to watch the 5 hour long, 150,000 participant procession. Chicago invented its own St, Patrick Day tradition. They dye the Chicago River green. In 1962 sanitation workers realized that the green vegetable dye they used to check for illegally dumped sewage could double as a St. Patrick’s Day decoration. The city has been dying
its waterways ever since. Unfortunately, the color only lasts for a few hours. Irish Bars Were Closed Ireland has been officially celebrating St. Patrick’s Day since 1903, when Irish politician James O’Marra introduced a bill in Westminster that made it an official public holiday back in his homeland. Not until the 1960’s could you find revelers celebrating at a bar. Ireland is heavily catholic, and St. Patrick’s Day falls during Lent which means that although celebratory feasts and drink were allowed, an all-night party seemed a little too sinful. Fearing excessive drinking Ireland introduced a law that forced all Pubs to close on March 17. Luckily for beer makers (Guinness) the law was repealed in 1961.The Irish are now free to celebrate the holiday as Americans do. The Legendary Snakes According to legend, St, Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland in the 5th Century. Of course, there weren’t any slithering reptiles to drive off the island. Ireland is one of a few countries where snakes do not live. The reference is thought to be metaphorical; St. Patrick who converted Pagans to Christianity was the man who supposedly drove “Evil” Non-Christians from the land. As I said... we are all a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. So spend this St. Patrick’s Day celebrating in your local community’s festivities enjoying parades, eating all your favorite Irish foods and everything “Green” that goes along with it.

The pandemic has disrupted businesses of all types around the country and the world including those in our local areas. Nearly two years after its beginning, we still see the effects it’s had and changes businesses have made. In the hospitality industry, which relies on in-person interaction, many restaurants, bars, and more had to shut their doors entirely to dine-in customers. Luckily the majority of area restaurants are now open for dine in at full capacity but now have to navigate the new ways of the industry. While rules and regulations were put in place to help contain the spread of the virus and protect everyone’s safety, restaurants and bars worldwide are still facing the strain. As establishments strive to return to normal, they need help from their local communities. We have put together several tips and strategies to support our local businesses during these times. From things as easy as ordering food delivery, including curbside pickup, to tipping your delivery workers and getting active on social media, there’s plenty we can all do! Every little bit helps in some way. Check out some of the best ways to help out our local restaurants, bakeries and more! TAKEOUT, DELIVERY & GIFT CARDS Even though most establishments are open and operating as usual with in-person dining again, many are doing their best to offer more extensive delivery and carryout options as an added form of income. Every order counts, and your help makes a big difference as it helps the establishments not only to stay open but also supports at least some of their staff. Many restaurants are also taking advantage of thirdparty delivery services, such as GrubHub and DoorDash. Be sure to checkout these apps to see what area restaurants are offering delivery with these services, you may even find

Panorama Community Magazine somewhere new to try! But, keep in mind that third-party delivery services take a large chunk of profits from the restaurant, sometimes up to 30% per order. So, while it’s still a good way to support your local restaurant, the most helpful way to go about it is to check if the restaurant offers it's own delivery service so they see more profit from your order. Eating Out Without Going Out In addition to being a great way to help our local restaurants, taking advantage of their delivery and takeout services can also be a great way to add some fun to any night of the week! Between options like contactless delivery and curbside pickup, there are plenty of options for supporting your favorites. And the best part, you’ll have a nice night in with great food and your favorite show to binge! Gift Cards Anytime you are looking for a gift for a friend or loved on is a great time to give back to your local
community! Gift cards are the perfect addition for your upcoming Easter baskets. What better way to show your gratitude this than by stopping in or buying a gift card to support your local neighborhood restaurants, bakeries and more? Check on your friends who work in this industry by talking to them often, making sure they have a support system when needed. Staffing Crisis For restaurant and bar owners, the return to normal operations won't be the end of tough times, as lost profits and slow returns to normalcy will affect this industry the most. With the current staffing crisis, many bars and restaurants are understaffed as you may have noticed in many of our area restaurants. The best way for you to help is to continue supporting your favorite local restaurants and to understand any long wait times or slower service. Continue to Tip Restaurant Workers For restaurants that switched to takeout and delivery, workers have likely had to take a sizable reduction in pay. For this reason, tipping when you order is even more crucial than ever before. You should continue to tip delivery drivers and tip when you pick up your take out orders. This can be a big help for them, and if nothing else, it will certainly brighten their day. Connect on Social Media Why it Helps Social media continues to be one of the most common ways for people to stay connected with the world and the people in their community. This was especially true when people were physically isolated and likely to be working from home during the pandemic. Social media was used as a way to stay connected more frequently.

That’s precisely why restaurants with a strong online presence are in a good position to engage audiences and have their content seen. For establishments in the hospitality industry, this kind of exposure is essentially the best way to ensure that people will remember them since customers can dine in once again. Now that things are more stable and open again, social media exposure still serves as a reminder for people to visit their favorite area restaurants, bakeries, bars and more again. Stay Up-To-Date Whether your favorite restaurant is posting once a day or once a week, you can help out by keeping up with their updates and engaging with them. Reactions and comments, even simple ones, can help them appear and reappear on people’s feeds, thereby giving them more visibility. Share Posts In addition to reacting and commenting, another way to increase an establishment’s visibility is to share their posts and possibly add some of your own messaging to them. This is a great way to give them publicity among your network, which they may not tap into ordinarily. You will see that Panorama shares local businesses posts on our Facebook page regularly to help boost visibility. Events Some restaurants & bars have started to host more events as a method to increase traffic to their business. Check out websites and social media platforms for your favorite restaurants or check Panorama each month to see what kind of events are coming up! Write Positive Reviews Something else that can potentially be very helpful is to use Yelp. Leaving positive reviews and comments for your favorite places (while using relevant words such as takeout and delivery) can help the business get more exposure to other diners looking for the same experience. In the long run, your review can help improve overall ratings for these restaurants. It will encourage people to try their food and increase foot traffic through their doors!

10 Reasons To Eat Out Opting to eat out has something to do more than merely trying to escape the burden of cooking and cleaning up. For some, it is the best choice for their current stage in life. Here are some of the benefits of dining out. 1. A Moment’s Notice Home cooking needs a lot of preparation. You have to know exactly what you want to eat at the start of the day so you can prepare for the ingredients and search for the recipe. This doesn't work for everyone. Some people want to decide on what they’ll eat five minutes before mealtime. If you are one of these people, then be sure to check out all the local restaurants in our restaurant guide. Many have daily and/or weekly specials. 2. Convenience You cook, eat and wash dishes. Convenience means, removing the first and last action words in the previous sentence and attend to the remaining action word; “eat”. Eating out may cost a little more
but, it saves you time and energy. Families may not choose this convenience as often, but you can always order take-out from a local restaurant and enjoy a meal at home with family withiout having to do all the cooking! 3. To be with Other People It’s not easy being alone. The loneliest moment in living alone is when you are having a meal. It is very easy to find company in a restaurant. Sitting at the bar will already resolve the issue of being alone. Being a regular in a restaurant will provide you with a sense of belongingness. If you don’t have a family yet then, at least, have a group that can feel like family. You can establish friendly relationships with the restaurants’ crew and the other regular customers. 4. To be Served If you have been working all day long, serving customers

and attending to their needs then, you deserve to be on the other side of the commercial equation. Before the day ends, you can be the customer for a change and have others serving your needs. You must be already tired from working all day. You may not have any energy left to cook and wash utensils. Allow other people to earn their salaries. Allow yourself to be served and pampered. 5. Save time If you have a very fast and busy lifestyle, home cooking will never work for you because you constantly have to be on the go. Breakfast will have to be somewhere close to your office and dinner has to be close to home. Busy people get through the day through proper delegation. You can consider dining out as delegating your work to other people. You assign the cooking and cleaning after to those who are professionals in those services so you can stay focused on your expertise. 6. More Food Choices Restaurants can offer you something more than what you can possibly have in your home mainly because they have a bigger refrigerator and a more knowledgeable cook. You can go Chinese, Japanese, Italian, American, Mexican, Dominican and more. 7. Complete Meal If you are craving for a complete meal composed of appetizers, salads, soup, main dish, desserts, and coffee, dining out will be less tedious. Can you imagine preparing all these for yourself at home? You may end up calling it quits after salad preparation. 9. Try Something New You can’t help but have the same thing over and over again when you dine at home. You will always have something left over for the following days when you are only cooking for yourself. If you want something new every time, you need to be out checking on the new and old restaurants that you haven’t been in to. Eating out should be a combination of exploring new places and revisiting those that you have enjoyed to see their daily and weekly specias. If you had a good day ar work or in the office, celebrate by trying a new restauarant or with the perfect dish you enjoy from one of your favorites. And, if you are having a bad day you can always visit a local restaurant to take your mind of the day and try something new and maybe even indulge yourself with a special dessert.

A Focus On Fish For Heart Health (BPT) - When it comes to heart health, lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise make a huge impact. As one of the most important organs in the body, keeping your heart in tip-top shape is essential. Luckily, according to registered dietitian Bianca Tamburello, foods that support a healthy heart are also great for overall wellness. Here's how you can make simple changes to swerve your diet in a heart-healthy direction by eating more fish.

Fatty fish is best for heart health Fatty fish, including salmon and tuna, are among the best foods for heart health. In fact, an analysis from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), looked at over 20 studies and found that eating one to two 3-oz servings of fatty fish per week decreases the risk of dying from heart disease by 36%. Why fatty fish? Tamburello explains, "Fatty fish are rich in omega-3s or good fats that may help improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels and even prevent clogging of the arteries. All these factors help decrease heart disease risk." For the most omega-3's per serving, look for farmed salmon from Chile. Farmed salmon tends to be higher in omega-3 fats than other types of salmon. Most Americans don't eat enough fish A surprising majority of Americans do not meet the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines recommendation to eat seafood, including fatty fish, at least two times per week. Tamburello says "Eating fish is linked to a lower risk of heart attacks and stroke. This means that falling short of weekly seafood goals is a missed opportunity for diet variety and overall wellness, particularly heart health." Selecting and preparing fish may be intimidating and can be another barrier to eat seafood more frequently. Let's

Panorama Community Magazine talk about how to confidently choose heart-healthy fish like salmon. Feel good about farmed fish Look for farmed salmon from Chile. Not only is it high in heart-healthy omega-3 fats but it's also sustainably raised and naturally low in mercury. According to a 2021 sustainability report released by Seafood WatchMonterey Bay Aquarium, Chile produces more yellow rated "good alternative" salmon than any other country in the world. Choosing farmed fish, raised via aquaculture, also relieves pressure on wild fisheries and oceans. Preserving the health of our oceans is an immediate concern as projections show that natural fisheries may be depleted as early as 2056. How to eat 2-3 servings of seafood per week Eat heart healthy and reach your seafood goals with these simple tips. • Frozen is a great option and convenient for busy weeknight meals • Make a simple salmon sheet pan meal • Try a fish taco recipe • Make a big batch of cioppino, a delicious fish stew, on a weekend and freeze portions • Pair sushi grade fish with brown rice and cucumber for a simple poke-inspired bowl (no cooking!) • Enjoy smoked salmon on whole wheat toast for breakfast If you currently eat seafood just a few times a month, start with a more realistic goal of one time per week and slowly work your way to two to three times per week, says Tamburello. Small diet changes over time can make all the difference for heart and overall health. How To Pair Food And Wine In Late Winter and Early Spring (BPT) - As the seasons change, so much of everyday life does, too. During the in-between months - when winter's chill is still in the air, but thoughts of spring are, too - it can be hard to figure out daily rituals like how to dress for the weather, manage busy calendars, and decide what's on the menu. Thankfully, this seasonal transition offers the perfect moment to delight in cozy food and wine pairings that celebrate this unique time. Playful snacking Snacks can be a great way to a take a breather during the day and refuel your body. Especially when wintery days seem to drag on, snacking can bring some muchneeded fun to your day, if you make it an intentional activity. Try your hand at sweet and savory combos with homemade trail mix, and, of course, there's always wine and chocolate. Pairing: Bonterra 2021 Rosé, California - Rosé is bottled in the winter and released early in the new year, making this the freshest time of year to enjoy it. This vibrant rosé showcases a delicious bouquet of organic grapes including Grenache, Mourvèdre and Malbec. Sip it with chocolate-dipped strawberries to complement the wine's refreshing notes of blood orange, watermelon and maraschino cherry. Cheese, yes please As seasons change, so should your cheese board. They are an easy go-to for entertaining, and are much more versatile than you might think (truffle fries board, anyone?). They're ideal for early spring nibbling, when it may still be too early for outdoor picnic fare, and are also perfect for a smorgasbord-style brunch, lunch or afternoon ballgame viewing session. Pairing: Fetzer NV Riesling, California - Spoiler alert: While wine and cheese may seem like a no-brainer together, this classic pairing is actually tricky, since cheese coats your palate and makes wine difficult to taste. Fortunately, it's Riesling to the rescue, thanks to the varietal's crisp acidity and balanced sweetness that cut through cheese's richness. Fruity and floral, this aromatic wine pairs perfectly with a variety of cheeses. This wine features a lively palate of peaches and bright citrus

with a semi-sweet and savory finish. Retro inspired With a chill remaining in the air, cozy nights at home are still on the agenda this time of year. Warm up while indulging your nostalgic side with a fondue pot Dip your toes into this tradition with Gruyère cheese from Switzerland. From there, the possibilities of melty cheese options are endless: try raclette next, then beer cheese dip. Pairing: 1000 Stories 2020 Bourbon Barrel-Aged Chardonnay, California - Thanks to aging in bourbon barrels, this rich Chardonnay brings distinct flavors of baked apple, lemon, wood spice and vanilla that deepen alongside notes of butterscotch and crème brûlée.

Pineapple Coconut Cherry Dream Bars
Peanut Butter Eggs Ingredients: • 4 cups 10X sugar* • 2 sticks margarine • 1 tsp. pure vanilla* • 1 lb. Merckens chocolate wafers* • 2 generous cups peanut butter (We like Jif chunky or creamy).
Cookie Crust Ingredients • 1/2 cup butter softened • 1/3 cup sugar • 1 cup King Midas flour* Filling Ingredients • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup sugar • 1 tsp. vanilla extract* • 1/2 tsp. pineapple flavor oil* • 1/3 cup King Midas flour* • 1 pinch salt • 1 tsp. baking powder • 8 oz. can crushed pineapple, drained well • 8 oz. sweet coconut* • 1 cup walnuts*, chopped • 1/2 cup maraschino cherries, chopped Crust Directions In mixing bowl, mix butter and 1/3 cup sugar. Then add 1 cup flour and mix until crumbly. Pat mixture evenly into bottom of a 9x13 pan*. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden. Remove to cool slightly. Filling Directions In a large bowl, beat eggs well. Then add 2/3 cup sugar, vanilla & flavoring. Mix until well combined. In a small bowl, whisk 1/3 cup flour, salt & baking powder and add it to the egg mixture. Carefully fold in pineapple, coconut, nuts & cherries. Spread over the baked crust, and bake for 30 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack* and cut into squares.
Directions: Mix peanut butter, margarine & vanilla until blended. Gradually add 10X sugar. Mix well & chill. Shape into eggs & dip into Merckens chocolate. Makes about 5 dozen. For a delicious variation, add 1½ cups Bresky’s crisp rice* for peanut butter “crisp” eggs. Another delicious variation (Linda’s favorite)… dip eggs into white chocolate & roll in toasted coconut*. Tip: If eggs are oily, adding about ½ cup Graham cracker crumbs to recipe makes them easier to dip. These eggs are normally soft, but worth the effort.

Legendary Sounds at HAHS — Experience Sinatra Forever
Spring Fling 2
Legendary sounds will be emanating from the Hazleton Area High School stage on March 25, 2022 as the Greater Hazleton Concert Series, Inc. welcomes Rick Michel starring in Sinatra Forever. This concert, a tribute to Frank Sinatra, pays homage to perhaps the greatest singer of all time. This is not an impersonation show but rather an interpretation performed by Michel who literally channels “Old Blue Eyes” through his spot-on vocals of the renowned crooner. According to Variety, “Rick Michel is the closest thing to Frank Sinatra we have ever heard.” Since he was a teenager, Rick has been singing Sinatra’s music. He has performed with big bands since the early 80s. He believes “Frank Sinatra was the most articulate of all the pop and standard singers. He made songs his own by uniquely phrasing the words to wrap around the melody line like no one else before him or since.” For the show Michel will choose a variety of music that best represents Sinatra’s career such as “Come Fly with Me”, “That’s Life”, “Strangers in the Night”, and “My Way”. He also includes stories, jokes, quips, and
impressions of important celebrities in Sinatra’s life like his Rat Pack buddy, Dean Martin. In addition to his lengthy and successful career, Michel always seems to find time to give back to the community. He has been involved in a number of charity events including the Wounded Warrior Project, Salvation Army Christmas Toys for Tots, and Make a Difference Day. Sinatra Forever is a timeless concert and part of the American Songbook. We welcome our audience to close their eyes and imagine the Chairman himself back on stage singing his greatest hits. Individual tickets for Sinatra Forever are $30 for adults and $10 for students. The concert which takes place on March 25th will begin at 7:30 PM at the Hazleton Area High School Auditorium where abundant free, lighted parking is available. For concert information or tickets, call Cynthia at 570-579-7110, Amelia at 570-788-4864 or Shirley at 570956-1653. Find more information on all our concerts on The Greater Hazleton Concert Series, Inc. web site at hazletonconcertseries.org/ or visit our Facebook page.

Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori Dr. Lori’s Art & Antiques Buying Guide By Dr. Lori Verderame When embarking on a new phase of life, like a new marriage, a new home, a new job, a big anniversary or retirement, many people chronicle the experience with the purchase of an important object. When looking for an investment object that is both fun and smart, art and antique object immediately come to mind. It is that item that you always wanted and you are ready to “treat yourself”. For the novice collector or even the seasoned art and antiques lover, jumping into the market can be tricky. This is a great time to buy so here I will share my insider tips about starting an
art collection. I’ve compiled an Art & Antiques Buying Guide to help you find, understand, negotiate and collect the best examples of fine art and antiques. Learn from Masters First, learn as much as you can about art and antiques in places where you are not tempted to buy art or antiques. What does that mean? How do you start a collection without buying? First, visit museums, historical societies, libraries, gallery exhibitions, and other places where fine art and antiques are on display, but are not for sale. You

Shown To The Right: Surfer, oil on canvas by Frank Lind, American artist and highly collected professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. should learn about the various media (e.g., pastels, watercolors, bronzes, oils on canvas, etc.), art movements (e.g., Surrealism, Impressionism, Contemporary Realism, etc.) and subjects (e.g., still lifes, seascapes, portraits, etc.) first so you have a good idea of what sparks your interest. Upon gaining this understanding, you’ll be better equipped to invest in something good that you also like. This method will prevent you from buying something on impulse or just because the opportunity presents itself. Stick to your Budget Don’t think about buying a work of art or antique piece until you establish a budget. I know, I know… boring. Boring but necessary. When you have your budget in mind, settle on it, and stick to it. Do not waiver. Don’t convince yourself to overspend because you fell in love with a piece either. No matter what, you will be happy if you stick to your budget. Most of the time, you’ll get a good piece this way because you are not considering too many objects at once which could cause confusion. Slow Down Forget life’s distractions when you are considering a major art or antique purchase. This work of art or antique object will become a part of your home life for years to come. Learn to look at the work of art or antique piece for more than just a few minutes. Don't let a pushy dealer, encouraging friend, or other “background noise” distract or rush you into a major art or antique purchase. Take a minute and just stand there and quietly look at the work. Think about what you see and try to figure out what you like about it. Consider it, ponder it, and don’t rush it. Back to Basics Try to consider the basics starting with black and white. Don't be taken in by an artwork’s color or an antique’s various ornamental details. Some people who

Guard Your Pets Against Contagious Diseases & Kenneth Trippett, Parasites byWestDr.Hazleton Veterinary Hospital It was Ben Franklin who said “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is rarely more true then when dealing with parasites and parasitic diseases in our pets. As the weather warms, the biting insects return. This represents a dangerous problem for all dogs. A single mosquito bite can cause Heartworm infection in any dog. Heartworm is almost always fatal without treatment and the treatment is very expensive. Luckily, Heartworm Disease is easily prevented. All dogs should be heartworm tested and started on a once per month heartworm preventive pill. These pills are very safe for most dogs, and will also help prevent intestinal parasites as well. Cats share some of these risks as well. Even indoor cats can get intestinal parasites because some are spread by fleas, or can be brought into the house by other animals, insects, or even on the bottom of your shoes. For these reasons, we encourage

The movie is 55 years old this year and we hope to include more information this year in conjunction with the Scranton Historical Society Where the Information is Found The information from the article is found in two ways. The old fashion way which involves trips to local historical societies, and interviews with family members and local historians, many who have been collecting data and publishing books for years. The modern way involves web sites and social networks. Historic Societies - Northeast Pennsylvania is blessed to have so many people dedicated to preserving the past. Many if not all of the local gems have sections or rooms dedicated to local sports and baseball, and some have their own Hall of Fames. Many of these societies have people who have written books and collect photos of all kinds of historic events. Web Sites - There are some incredible web sites that provide free information that can be sorted in all imaginable ways.
Baseballreference.com – This website is the greatest source of information available. The site contains information on over 22,000 players and box scores of over 100,000 games. Most importantly, from our perspective, it also includes minor league records of players and leagues dating back to the 1880’s. One of the great features of the website is that it provides similarity scores to compare players across the years. This is a must site for even the most casual fan. Newpapers.com – This website is an unbelievable wealth of information for any research project. It is extremely valuable to find out more obscure facts about local players. In a recent conversation with a reader, Brad Kocher of White Haven was discussed. Kocher played three seasons in the majors for the Tigers and Giants

Thedeadballera.com – This website specializes Brad Kocher in obituaries of MLB players. There are many categories listed on this site to find out where the ballplayers are taking their final swings. Digitalballparks.com and ballparks.com – These two websites feature both minor league and major league ball parks, with a wealth of information on everything from construction to their eventual demise. Spring is finally near. The grass will soon come alive and the birds will be singing. The season brings excitement for car enthusiasts or people who simply want to go for a relaxing drive. But your relaxation can easily turn to frustration. The potholes have become more and more common along our roads. They have grown much larger this year. In fact, if you encounter one of these monsters it will most likely jar the fillings from your teeth. The winter was hard on our roads, enough to be bad news for our vehicles. It only takes only one jolt to have many effects on our vehicles, some sudden and visible. But other effects can be hidden and unseen. Both can cause numerous
safety issues. Don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but you are bound to hit a behemoth pothole eventually, they are everywhere. Potholes are notorious for causing numerous problems to our vehicles ranging from tire to alignment issues. Some of the problems to look for if you run into a pothole include: Tire damage- Potholes can obviously cause major damage and leave you stranded on the side of the road. Blowouts can lead to dangerous situations so keep your tires inflated properly. Properly inflated tires with good tread depth will absorb a hit from a normal pothole better than an under or overinflated tire. If your hit a big pothole it is a good idea to have the tire checked because a tire can bulge

and/or tear and separate on the inside of the tire. Today’s low profile tires cannot withstand a hard jolt from a pothole when compared to larger sidewall tires. A tire shop will examine your tire to be sure it is safe and damage free. Rims- Potholes can not only destroy tires but can also wreak havoc on the rims. The majority of rims used today are made of aluminum which is softer than the steel wheels used in earlier years. These rims can bend and cause the tire to lose air quickly. They can also become distorted and cause a dangerous wobble or shimmy. If the rim is damaged, chances are good that the tire pressure monitoring transducer (if mounted inside the rim) may also be damaged. Unfortunately, replacement for both is normally necessary and expensive. A minor jolt may cause the tire to become out of balance. If your car has a shimmy at certain speeds, have the wheel balance checked at a tire shop. Suspension- Hitting a large pothole can cause extensive damage to the steering and suspension system in many ways. Suspension system components are often damaged. These items include shock absorbers, struts, tie rods etc. This is where the damage may not be visible but may become very unsafe. If you hit a large pothole and feel any type of changes in the handling of your vehicle, or if there is any vibration, shimmy or noises, don’t delay. Look for uneven tire wear. Take you vehicle to a certified technician for a thorough inspection of all suspension and steering components. Many other parts can be affected by hitting even a small pothole in the road. Exhaust and body parts can be jolted loose and your wheel alignment can be changed in an instant causing issues with tire wear and handling problems. Driving the local roads and highway’s only gives proof to this fact as drivers can be seen putting their spare tires on and parts scattered along the notorious pothole areas. If you hit a pothole and are worried if there is damage, have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible. Technology With A Human Touch (NewsUSA) – The auto industry continues to market electric cars as the "next best thing," and the newest generation of electric vehicles (EVs) are more than up to speed.Although widespread adoption of EVs took some time to find its footing in the United States and was slow to get off the ground, more car shoppers are seeing the benefits of EVs and hybrids. Several improvements in the latest models have helped overcome some hurdles that might have made buyers hesitant to embrace EVs.Some of the key features consumers want include: More power. Consumers want increased range and fast charging. The battery life of newer electric cars allows for several hundred miles on a single charge. More style. Car buyers don’t want to sacrifice comfort and style, and manufacturers are rising to this challenge with roomy designs equal to those of conventional cars.
"Consumers are ready to switch to electric vehicles," according to Brian Moody, Executive Editor for Autotrader."Things they consider when thinking about buying an electric vehicle include reduced environmental guilt, less time refueling, and never having to change your oil again," he says. One example of the latest in EV technology is the EV6, auto maker Kia’s first entry into the batterypowered vehicle market. The EV6 features an ultra-fast 350-kilowatt charger that enables the car to go from a 10 percent to 80 percent charge in less than 18 minutes, ready for up to 210 miles of range. It’s also designed with a distinctive Vehicle-to-Load (V2L)
feature that enables use of the battery as a mobile power source for multiple applications, according to the company website. Other advances include both rear wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive, as well as two battery sizes, 58.0 kWh and 77.4 kWh.The latest battery technology meets consumers’ need for speed with the 576 HP power to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 3.5 seconds. The style factor is there, too. The EV6 channels the design of current crossover vehicles with a four-door sedan body and seating for five passengers. The EV6 is scheduled to debut in early 2022.Visit kia.com for more information about the latest in electric vehicle technology.
Helping Cars See Dangers That Humans Can't (NewsUSA) -Imagine this. You are driving through a dark tunnel on a stormy night with the glare from rain and headlights making it difficult to see. What if your car could see for you and detect a motorcyclist who’s waiting out the rain on the side of the road in the tunnel? Well, the good news is that the mobility tech company, Magna, is the first company to design a digital radar technology that can do just that.ICON Radar offers drivers an added layer of safety and security on the road. Your car might already have sensors that flash in your rearview mirror when a car is in your blind spot, or that beep when someone passes behind you in

A vehicle with ICON Radar can actually scan the environment around your vehicle in four dimensions: distance, height, depth and speed. That helps it see objects such as a shredded tire on the road ahead of you, or that motorcyclist hiding from the rain in that dark tunnel. When obstacles are detected, drivers get an alert so they can take evasive action and safely steer clear of the danger. This technology can detect an object just 12 inches high from 164 feet away, a pedestrian

s r e t t Ma Women May Need Financial ‘Catch-Up’ by Edward Jones - Financial Advisors It’s unfortunate but true: If you’re a woman, you face more obstacles than men in achieving financial security. And that means you may well need to put in some extra effort. Just how serious is your challenge? For one thing, women still face a gender pay gap – based on median incomes, women earn about 82 cents for every dollar a man makes, according to the Census Bureau. This pay gap amounts to a nearly $470,000 difference in lifetime earnings, according to an Edward Jones/Age Wave study. Furthermore, when factoring in the
career disruptions women face because of caring for children and elderly parents, that $470,000 becomes a $1.1 million lifetime earnings gap, according to the study. Finally, women tend to live longer than men, meaning their lifetime earnings must last longer. Everyone’s situation is different, but these figures at least point to the challenges many women encounter. To help yourself, consider these moves: • Pay yourself first. You always have to pay your bills – but, at the same time, pay yourself by moving money automatically from your checking account each month into a lowrisk, liquid vehicle, such as a money market account or some type of cash management account connected with
your investment portfolio. This move can help give you a “bucket” of money to use for any reason, such as the need to step away from your job to care for children or aging parents. • Increase your 401(k) contributions each year. If you have a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, take full advantage of it. At a minimum, contribute enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered, and increase your contributions every year, or every time your salary increases. • Fully fund your IRA. Even if you contribute to a 401(k), you may still be eligible to invest in an IRA – and you should. You can put in up to $6,000 per year to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. (However,

Identity Theft... Have Your Taxes Already Been Filed? By Alice Horton-Barr, CEO, Honest Abe's Taxes, Inc. Identity theft is on the rise in 2021 tax filing due to all the “free money” available to tax payers this year. Many taxpayers are discovering when they go to file their taxes that the returns are being rejected due to it being a “duplicate submission”. Social Security numbers have known to be hacked from Credit Card sites, the IRS itself, Bank sites, and other internet sources. If your SSN has now been used to file a fraudulent tax return you must file Identity theft with the IRS and file a paper return. It will probably take 6 to 8 months, at least, to see your 2021 tax refund. Also, in the future you will receive a PIN each January from the IRS that you must use in the filing of your tax return so that the IRS knows the return is being
filed by you and not the “hacker”. Last year the IRS started a voluntary program for people who have not been hacked to sign up for a PIN number. You can sign up for that program by filing form 15227. It is a simple form. The IRS will reach out to you to confirm that you filed the form and ask c o n f i r m i n g information from your tax returns. You will then get a PIN each January to file your taxes with. The IRS PIN acts as a second SSN to secure your income tax filing. It is a good program and works, but you must be sure to not misplace the PIN

5 High-Impact Inflation-Fighting Tips For 2022 (BPT) - Consumers who notice inflated prices at the grocery store, gas pump and hardware store may be inspired to minimize the impact of rising prices. The best place to start could be with a handful of big-ticket items where saving money can put hundreds of extra dollars in your checking account over the course of the year. That may provide a cushion to handle the steady rise in prices on dozens of smaller items. Here are five, high-impact ways to battle inflation: 1. Rethink auto insurance coverage If remote work means you are driving less than you did in the past, you may qualify to save money on your auto insurance. These discounts can be available to those driving fewer than 10,000 miles per year and can result in savings as high as 10% off car insurance premiums. Should very limited driving put your vehicle at lower risk for damage, it may make sense to reevaluate past decisions to purchase comprehensive and collision coverage. It might also be time to increase your auto insurance deductible in favor of lower premiums. qIf the amount you drive has dropped significantly, consider a pay-per-mile insurance plan that adjusts your cost according to how much you drive. How To Decide What Kind Of Garden You Want This Year (BPT) - Gardening has become a very popular pastime over the past two years, and that trend shows no sign of slowing down. According to last year's Axiom Gardening Insights Survey, 62% of their respondents said they will plant even more in 2022. Whether you're one of the many who plan to expand your garden or it's your first attempt, there are plenty of tools and resources available to help you succeed. Developing a concrete plan can help you focus on how to make your dream become a reality. Here are steps to help determine what you want from your garden before the planting season is underway. Figure out your gardening goals You could have more than one motivation for gardening, ranging from just enjoying being outdoors to specific results. Your reasons might include: • Growing veggies, fruits and/or herbs you can eat or use in cooking • Boosting your home's curb appeal with beautiful flowers • Attracting butterflies and/or bees with a pollinator garden • Creating a pretty backyard sanctuary Determining which goal is most important to you can help you make choices about what and where to plant. Utilize help getting started Enlist family members or friends to share tasks like planting, watering,
weeding and fertilizing. Gardening is a great hobby for all ages, and children can have fun learning about nature from planting things and watching them grow. One easy way to get started is with FerryMorse Plantlings: live healthy baby plants delivered directly to your door. With over 100 varieties of herb, vegetable, shrub, tree and flower Plantlings available, ready-toplant seedlings are an easy way to get the summer growing season started. Know your space and time limitations It's easy to be overwhelmed by all the amazing available choices, especially when you're new to gardening. But even homes with limited space can benefit from the beauty of plants or flowers in a planter, window box or raised garden bed. Choose low-maintenance plants and flowers to save on time. Consider using what you already have to maximize your efforts - are there flowers and plants you already love in your yard? You could space them out if they are spreading varieties, moving some to other areas of your yard. Look up which plants need more sun or shade, so you know they'll thrive where you transplant them.
Know your zone Learn what plants are native to your geographical zone and hardiest where you live before purchasing seeds or Plantlings. Learning the best times to plant specific species will also help your gardening efforts succeed. Your local agricultural extension office is a wonderful source of information on what plants grow best in your area. Know your level of expertise Gardening rookie? You'll enjoy your efforts even more if you limit the number of varieties you plant. Focus on just a few at a time, then expand what you plant later in the year, or next year. Even if you're an experienced gardener, it still helps to have a list of goals. Visit FerryMorse.com for everything you need to get started, plus tips and resources to help you enjoy your garden more than ever this year.

Your Hvac System Affects Your Home’s Indoor hand, a functioning filtered ventilation system moves the air throughout your by the HVAC experts at S.J. Kowalski, Inc. Air Quality home to help prevent mold and other The air inside your home could be two to five times more polluted than the outdoor air due to dust, pet dander, cleaning products and bacteria. Low indoor air quality (IAQ) can make allergies and upper respiratory conditions worse. A moist environment can keep mold and bacteria in your home, increasing your potential for getting sick. Since you spend a lot of time at home, it is beneficial to consider ways to improve the air you and your family breath each day. One way is with the help of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Your HVAC system does more than regulate your home’s temperature. It can also positively or negatively influence your home’s IAQ. All forced air HVAC units need air filters that help keep the air handler clean, but if dust and debris get stuck inside, they will eventually travel into your home. Most people spend up to 90 percent of their day indoors, so it is essential to have healthy air quality inside your home. You might want to consider replacing your air conditioning unit if it is an older unit and if it is reducing your home’s IAQ. Over time mold and mildew form in the system and contaminate the air coming out of the ductwork. Older HVAC units also contain R-22, an outdated refrigerant that contributes to the reduction of the earth’s ozone layer. A new air conditioner can help keep allergens out of your home and provide you with safe healthy air. The HVAC system affects your home’s indoor air quality, in the following ways: • Eliminates odors and pollutants: The indoor unit recirculates inside air through a filtration system that helps gets rid of odors and allergens and helps keep outside pollutants out of your living space to reduce allergies and asthma symptoms. • Keeps out pests: A functioning central air system includes sealed ductwork and filters that can help keep out insects and pests. However, if you have leaky ductwork or openings around your wall or window unit, rodents and insects could get into your home.

• Regulates indoor humidity: Besides heating and cooling your living space, an HVAC system also reduces the moisture in the air which could cause mold, mildew and bacteria. In the winter, an environment that is too dry can make you more susceptible to illness. If you can control your home’s humidity through your HVAC system, you have a better chance of staying healthy all year long. • Provides adequate ventilation: The fan in your HVAC unit can provide the proper airflow throughout your home. Newer construction homes have tight seals around them to enhance their energy efficiency, but these seals can also make the air stale, trapping pollutants and moisture. On the other

Having routine maintenance on your HVAC system twice a year insures that your system works properly and will keep you cool in the summer and warm and cozy in the winter. Call S.J. Kowalski, Inc. at 570455-2600 to schedule your spring air conditioning maintenance. During an air conditioning maintenance an HVAC specialist cleans inspects the various components, such as the filters and coils, and repairs them as necessary. If you don’t take care of your system properly today, you might have to pay for costly repairs or even a full replacement tomorrow.

He will deliver the Prize lecture at the Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS) Forum on February 25, 2022. “Dr. Bar-Or is a true thought leader who is applying very sophisticated approaches to translate complex findings and changing the way we think of MS and how we will more precisely treat it in the not-too-distant future,” said Bruce Bebo, Ph.D., Executive
Vice President of Research Programs at the National MS Society, which administers the award. “Like few others, his work is driving toward achieving permanent remission of MS, stopping its progression, and preventing its onset, which is truly visionary.” Among his many activities and achievements: • Dr. Bar-Or is providing exciting insights into how immune cells interact with and influence one another to drive or calm immune attacks, and how these cells interact with brain cells to mediate destructive inflammation in MS. • He has continued to increase understanding of pediatric MS, which provides a unique window into early disease biology. • His team’s approach includes the development of a novel Precision Neuroimmunology Platform, aimed at capturing the range of immune-response states that can be seen across individuals, while continuing to uncover new insights into immune activation profiles in health and disease. In addition to developing tools for better measuring a person’s immune response to immune challenges (such as with different immune therapies or vaccination), the overall approach, and particularly the incorporation of cutting edge biologicalresponse measures in clinical trials, is contributing to understanding the therapeutic mode-of-action of emerging therapies, to improving the design and implementation of clinical trials and to the development of meaningful biomarkers that will eventually enable more tailored approaches to treating MS. The goal is to go from today’s one-sizefits-all approach to clinical trials and treatment, to developing more personalized treatment plans that work best for each person with MS, and ultimately achieve a

Treating GI Cancers with Radiation Therapy by the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer is a term for the group of cancers that affect the digestive system. This includes cancers of the esophagus, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, bowel (large intestine or colon and rectum), and anus. The symptoms for GI cancer relate to the organ affected and can include obstruction (leading to difficulty swallowing or defecating), abnormal bleeding, or other associated problems. The diagnosis often requires endoscopy, followed by a biopsy of suspicious tissue. The treatment depends on the location of the tumor, as well as the type of cancer cell and whether it has invaded other tissues or spread elsewhere. These factors also determine the prognosis. One of the most common GI cancers is colorectal cancer. Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the third most common. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be almost 7,000 cases of colorectal cancer
diagnosed in Pennsylvania in 2022. Colorectal cancer includes cancers of the colon or rectum. Most colorectal cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids) and first develop as polyps, which are abnormal growths inside the colon or rectum that may later become cancerous. Since colorectal cancer often begins as polyps, it is important to find and remove them to help prevent colorectal cancer. That is where screening comes in. Expert medical groups, including the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, strongly recommend screening for colorectal cancer. Although minor details of the recommendations may vary, these groups generally recommend that people at average risk of colorectal cancer get screened at regular intervals with highsensitivity fecal occult blood tests (FOBT), sigmoidoscopy, or a colonoscopy beginning at age 50. People at increased risk because of a family history of
colorectal cancer, polyps, or because they have inflammatory bowel disease, may be advised to start screening before age 50 or have more frequent screening. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, we treat colorectal cancer painlessly and noninvasively with external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). EBRT is an effective treatment for colorectal cancer, working within cancer cells to limit their ability to multiply. During treatment, high-energy X-rays are delivered to the cancer with a linear accelerator (LINAC). The treatment process is painless, safe, and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Side effects are usually minimal, and most patients return to routine activities immediately after each treatment. For more information about GI cancers treated at the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazelton, including colorectal cancer, please call (570) 459-3460 or visit www. HazeltonCancerCenter.com today.
How To Choose Quality Vitamins and Supplements (Family Features) More than half of Americans take an overthe-counter vitamin or dietary supplement, but many may not realize that the quality of these products can vary greatly. Because supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration like other medicines, not all are quality products. When choosing a vitamin or other supplement, checking for independent verification can help ensure quality. A recent study in the “Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine” found that the amount of actual melatonin in 71% of supplements is off by a 10% margin, meaning that labels of many melatonin substances do not accurately reflect how much melatonin is in the pill. The study also found the amount of melatonin within pills in a single jar can vary by 465%. This incident illustrates the value of verification, which confirms what is on the label is what is in the bottle.
MARCH 2022
Measures of Quality The following are some of the characteristics to consider when evaluating the quality of a dietary supplement: • Positive Identification: There are products on the market that do not contain the ingredients indicated on the label. Tests by an independent third party can confirm that what is on the label is in the bottle. • Potency: It is crucial that ingredients are present in the right amount. Too little may have no effect on your health, while too much may be harmful. • Purity: Unwanted ingredients can have a negative effect on health. Examples may include heavy metals, mold or mildew, and chemicals from pesticides. Continued on page 51.

See a Chiropractor After a Concussion by John Degenhart, DC I see so many patients who had concussions from car accidents or football injuries, but it is usually years after they have had a concussion. This article is to help you understand why those people should come in sooner. Listen carefully. A concussion is when a trauma occurs where your brain bounces off the internal skull. Doctors will order a CAT scan to make sure a brain bleed
doesn’t occur. The neurologists do nerve conduction studies if headaches or migraines persist to look for possible brain damage. Research shows that 93% of patients who have concussions do not get brain bleeds and yet their migraines persist even after taking multiple medications by their neurologist. What does this mean? That the problem is not with the brain. In my 42 years of full-time practice, the problem is in the neck. Let me explain.
Let’s say 10 years ago your head hit the windshield in a car accident. The patient goes to the ER, CAT scan shows no brain bleed, then sees a neurologist. After all tests are negative, multiple medications are tried, with no relief. When I tell those patients that their neck was misaligned as their skull was traumatized, they agree that it makes logical sense. Then as I adjust their spine, and all their headaches or migraines go away, in amazement, they will say, “For ten years I missed out on so many social events because my migraines were terrible, even with the meds. Why didn’t my neurologist refer me to a chiropractor?” As you read this, it is your body, you decide what is best for you. If you have had head trauma in the past, your neck needs to be adjusted. If you sleep or used to sleep on your stomach, your neck is twisted all night, and will cause migraines; you need to see a chiropractor. And never crack or habitually twist or stretch your own neck, it makes it worse. See a chiropractor who is gentle, that can safely and gradually realign your neck and heal your body so you will make the best of every day! I await your phone call! Trained, Licensed & Insured

Skin and Your Heart by Stephen Schleicher, MD Last month the American Academy of Dermatology published a nice review article titled: HEART DISEASE: 12 WARNING SIGNS THAT APPEAR ON YOUR SKIN. Some of the 12 are a bit obscure, so here are the top 3 along with their explanation: 1) Swelling in your feet and lower legs (medically termed: edema) What it may be telling you: Your heart isn’t working properly. Many diseases of the heart cause fluid to build up in your feet and lower legs. As the fluid builds up, you may see swelling, which can extend as far as the upper legs and groin. 2) Blue or purple color on your fingers and toes (medically termed: cyanosis) What it may be telling you: You have a blockage in a blood vessel. When you’re extremely cold, your skin can turn blue (or purple). If an area of your skin is blue (or purple) when you’re warm, that can be a sign your blood isn’t getting enough oxygen. Without treatment, the lack of oxygen can cause the skin and underlying tissue to eventually die. 3) Yellowish-orange, waxy growths on your eyelids (medically termed: xanthelasma) If you see yellowish-orange growths on your skin, these may be deposits of cholesterol. You may need cholesterol testing or another medical test. Unhealthy cholesterol levels require treatment, which can prevent life-threatening heart disease. Getting your cholesterol levels under control may also help clear the growths on your skin. If the growths don’t clear, a board-certified dermatologist can treat them.

Panorama Community Magazine Vitamins and Supplements Continued from page 49 • Performance: A pill or tablet must properly dissolve, or else ingredients cannot be absorbed by the body. In that case, it is more likely to pass through your system without any effect on your health. Another example is saw palmetto extract, a supplement commonly used to support prostate health and help to reduce frequent urination. Studies indicate that not all saw palmetto products are the same. Differences in purity, potency and quality among the various available saw palmetto products are thought to affect the usefulness of these supplements. “As with any supplement, a consumer should look for the most reliable option,” said Ed Wyszumiala, head of the Dietary Supplement Verification Program at U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP). “Only consistent and quality saw palmetto extracts have been shown to be effective based on clinical research. Therefore, consumers seeking a quality dietary supplement can feel confident choosing products with third-party verification, such as Flomentum, the only saw palmetto extract supplement that has been independently verified by USP.” How to Make Supplements Part of a Healthy Daily Routine Following a few simple guidelines can make it easy to include supplements as part of your daily routine. 1. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any supplements, as they may interact with your prescription medications. 2. Do your homework on the manufacturer to make sure it is a reputable company that adheres to good manufacturing practices and does not appear to be the subject of frequent consumer complaints. 3. Avoid companies making questionable claims about curing diseases and do your research on the science behind the products. 4. Carefully follow the directions on the labels, so you take the supplement exactly as intended. Tests by an independent third party can confirm that what is on the label is in the bottle. Learn more about quality supplements and check whether your products are USP Verified at Quality-Supplements.org/Verified-Products.

You Can Be The Future Of Healthcare
(BPT) - Do you know a biomedical scientist? Chances are you do. She could be the woman you see in the park most weekends with her two little children running around, or the man who's riding on the mountain biking trails every Saturday. They look just like us, and we would never know they get up each weekday to help us and our loved ones live longer and healthier lives because they know that #ScienceWorks. Biomedical scientists are researching ways to transform the quality and type of health care we all receive. Imagine a world where it's possible to find out what health conditions we are genetically at greatest risk of developing, being able to detect and diagnose them early, and have safe preventative, treatment and management options. That's what biomedical scientists are spending their careers working on, to move toward a future of "personalized medicines." The FDA has described personalized medicine as an innovative approach to tailoring disease prevention and treatment that takes into account differences in
people's genes, environments and lifestyles. This treatment paradigm is within our reach - but it needs our trust, encouragement and support. Our scientists have the ability to drive this new treatment paradigm from an idea to a reality. Before FDA approves any personalized medicine, it must meet rigorous standards for safety and effectiveness, typically requiring extensive pre-clinical research, clinical trials and quality manufacturing development. The research required to get to where we can go is complex and lengthy. It also may be the greatest investment we ever make. In fact, scientific research is the great hope we have for a healthier future. Can you imagine being able to anticipate and prevent a disease such as cancer, or detect it early to manage or cure it in ways that today might seem impossible? There's a world for us where healthcare can be more efficient and more effective. This is the promise of biomedical science, fueled by its scientists. They know that #ScienceWorks. Living with narcolepsy: One woman's journey with this rare disorder (BPT) - Imagine feeling so tired during the day that you struggle to stay awake and alert, constantly feeling the need for sleep - often to the point that it interrupts your day-to-day life physically, emotionally and socially. This persistent feeling of tiredness during the day is excessive daytime sleepiness and it's the main symptom of narcolepsy, a rare neurological disorder. North Carolina-native, Lindsey was diagnosed with narcolepsy in 2019 after experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness, among other symptoms, for many years prior to her official diagnosis. "Before treatment I would have described my excessive daytime sleepiness as just unbearable," said Lindsey. "Regardless of how much I fought through, there were points in the day that I was not able to push through, and I had to take that time to rest." Lindsey's excessive daytime sleepiness was making it difficult for her to do the everyday things she wanted and needed to do, like working, maintaining social engagements with friends, and even baking, one of her favorite hobbies. An underdiagnosed disorder According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), narcolepsy affects approximately 165,000 people in the United States. Many people who may be living with narcolepsy, however, have not been diagnosed. For those who have, the diagnosis is often complicated and delayed, sometimes taking more than 10 years and coupled with misdiagnoses along the way. "More than 50% of people living with narcolepsy are initially misdiagnosed, with symptoms often misattributed to other conditions like depression, insomnia or ADHD," said Dr. Chris Winter, boardcertified neurologist and sleep specialist in Charlottesville, VA. "Beyond that, many who are living with narcolepsy may assume everyone else feels as exhausted as they do, or they may hear misconceptions about narcolepsy, leading them to avoid seeking help from a healthcare professional." Narcolepsy can have a debilitating impact beyond excessive daytime sleepiness, with many facing the stigma of being lazy or antisocial due to low energy levels, according to Dr. Winter. In addition to excessive daytime sleepiness, people living with narcolepsy may also experience cataplexy, described by the NIH as a sudden, brief loss of muscle strength or tone while a person is awake. It

is often triggered by strong emotions such as laughter or surprise and may only affect parts of the body such as the hands or eyelids. Support for people living with narcolepsy After being diagnosed with narcolepsy, Lindsey looked for approaches to help manage her symptoms. This included joining support groups for people living with narcolepsy and participating in advocacy events and programs to learn more about her condition. "I attend a weekly support group, and I get a lot of support from that," said Lindsey. "It's nice being with people who get it." Lindsey's support group also helped lead her to WAKIX® (pitolisant) tablets, a medication that has become an integral part of her treatment plan. After hearing people in her support group share their experiences, Lindsey asked her doctor about WAKIX. WAKIX is a first-of-its-kind once-daily tablet taken first thing in the morning, that is FDA approved to treat excessive daytime
sleepiness or cataplexy in adults with narcolepsy. "There were a few things about WAKIX that caught my attention that I learned through doing my research, such as it increases histamine in the brain and also WAKIX is not a stimulant," explained Lindsey. According to Dr. Winter, although the way that WAKIX works is not fully understood, it is thought to work through histamine, a natural chemical in the brain. WAKIX increases histamine levels in the brain, which promotes wakefulness. Lindsey and her doctor talked about what to expect when starting WAKIX. "My doctor explained that for some people it may take up to eight weeks to achieve a response, so it would take time for me to notice if WAKIX was working, and to find the right dose. He told me that every person living with narcolepsy was different and individual results may vary, and we discussed the possible side effects of WAKIX, and that the most common ones include nausea, insomnia and anxiety." "We know from the clinical trials that these are the common side effects for WAKIX. These are not all the possible side Continued on page 57.

More Than Skin-Deep: Why Your Skin Color Matters When It Comes to Plaque Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis (BPT) - People living with a chronic condition may experience stigmatization on a daily basis. Diane Talbert can relate; a patient-turned-advocate, she has fought her own battle with plaque psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) for decades. Diane often felt misunderstood and dismissed as the visible signs of her disease did not match with the images seen in medical textbooks. Delays in diagnosis and treatment compounded the effects of her psoriasis as she navigated the healthcare system as a Black woman, resulting in seemingly insurmountable medical and emotional challenges and obstacles. She is not alone; living with plaque PsO and PsA is often more difficult for people of color, who may experience a different disease course compared to white patients. A study of African American patients with psoriasis showed that quality of life was worse in people of color compared to Caucasian patients.1,2,3 Engaging medical professionals with knowledge of these conditions for skin of color could be a factor in mitigating delayed treatment.2 Diane turned her situation into a

positive experience by learning the power of her voice and serving as a resource for others going through a similar struggle. To help change the psoriatic disease experience for all people affected, she has become an advocate, annual visitor to Capitol Hill, and speaker about autoimmune disease to a variety of groups. Dr. Lynn McKinley-Grant, associate professor of dermatology at Howard University College of Medicine and president of the Skin of Color Society, and Diane are two of the passionate experts who have partnered with Janssen, a pharmaceutical company focused on innovations for some of the most devastating diseases and complex medical challenges of our time. This initiative, called Determi-Nation, comprises both healthcare and patient experts motivated to spark a health movement within plaque PsO and PsA. Members of this diverse, crossfunctional team are all paid consultants for Janssen, and together are working to

develop solutions with communities of color - bridging treatment and diagnosis gaps. Respectively, Diane and Dr. McKinleyGrant reflected on the challenges of living with, and treating people who have, plaque PsO or PsA, and compiled five ways people of color can confidently advocate for their skin health. 1. Choose Providers Familiar with Skin of Color On Caucasian skin, plaque PsO typically appears as raised, red patches covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells, or "scale." However, on skin of color, plaques can be thicker with more scales than the surrounding skin and appear darker, less red, and more violet.4,5,6 A diagnostic presentation for psoriasis is the plaques are symmetrical in all skin types.6 Therefore, Dr. McKinleyGrant stresses the importance of looking for healthcare providers experienced with skin of color. "Find out where the dermatologist trained, if it was a community with people of color and if they have experience in treating psoriasis in patients of color," Dr. McKinley-Grant says. "Research into the doctor's background takes more effort in the beginning but may result in finding the best provider for your plaque psoriasis." Also getting referrals from other patients and reading reviews on the internet are ways to assess the doctor. 2. Prioritize Clear Communication Dr. McKinley-Grant considers active listening critical in the patient-provider relationship, saying that "clear, engaged communication can go a long way

Panorama Community Magazine toward better disease management." She goes on to note, "you should try to be open and honest about what you are experiencing and observe whether your provider is actively listening while you describe your condition." 3. Listen to Your Body As someone living with plaque PsO and PsA, Diane found strength in being an expert on her own disease by paying close attention to her body. "Providers should understand that my life matters, and I deserve a diagnosis," she says. "I had already versed myself in the limited research that was out there, and I wish I knew then that it's okay to speak up and take note of what I'm noticing with my body." 4. Bring Your Support Network Living with a chronic disease, and implementing these learnings, understandably can seem like an enormous task. This is especially true for people with plaque PsO, who endure considerable challenges due to visible signs of the disease. As a result, they may have anxiety and can become depressed.7,8 Recognizing that this disease can be an uncomfortable subject, Diane has found it helpful to lean on her husband, a trusted member of her support network, during the difficult moments. Having emotional support is invaluable when managing any chronic disease. 5. Utilize Resources While people ultimately strive for in-person visits to cultivate the doctorpatient relationship, ask about remote ways to access information. Virtual office visits have numerous benefits, including the convenience of sharing your experiences and questions from a comfortable place.9,10 There are also organizations, like the National Psoriasis Foundation, dedicated to supporting people living with these diseases.11 While there is much work to do, Dr. McKinley-Grant, Diane, and the entire Determi-Nation expert team know that the most important step is to simply start the conversation! After being on WAKIX for about eight or nine weeks, Lindsey's husband pointed out that she was not taking as many naps. Lindsey also noticed that she needed fewer naps than she used to and was feeling more awake during the day. Beyond her treatment plan, Lindsey's techniques for helping to manage her symptoms involve several lifestyle changes she has found helpful, including: Healthy
eating and avoiding processed foods; Journaling and other stress reduction activities; Getting adequate sunlight during the day. "Narcolepsy doesn't have to completely disrupt your life," said Lindsey. "It's not an easy disorder to live with but you don't have to feel alone. There are still ways to help manage and thrive with it and WAKIX gave me the wakefulness that I was looking for." Read more about WAKIX below and speak with a healthcare provider to see if WAKIX could be an option for you, just as Lindsey did.
