Bravo monsieur Riel-Salvatore pour votre article paru dans la revue Panoram Italia sur le célèbre artiste pluridisciplinaire Guido Nincheri. Plusieurs articles furent publiés sur le même sujet, mais vous avez été le seul à nommer d’autres artistes italiens venus à Montréal, dont Umberto Bruni et Giuseppe Fiore, pour travailler pour le contracteur G. Nincheri. Entre autre, le professeur florentin Giuseppe Catani Chiti, de renommée mondiale pour ses œuvres religieuses, avait envoyé son fils, Sam Catani, à Montréal pour aider monsieur Nincheri à achever l’église Notre Damede-la-Défense. Bien à vous et félicitation pour votre excellente revue. Alexandre Catani, Montréal Bonjour Monsieur Riel-Salvatore, je suis propriétaire d’un hôtel à Baie-Comeau et je suis aussi guide touristique depuis 14 ans. L’attrait principal de la Ville de Baie-Comeau est l’église de Ste-Amélie, car elle est couverte des fresques de l’artiste Guido Nincheri qui je crois constituent parmi ses plus belles œuvres religieuses. Il a aussi fait tous les vitraux dans cette église qui sans exagérer me rappelle la chapelle Sixtine à Rome. Le petit fils de Monsieur Nincheri vient encore visiter l’église à Baie-Comeau ainsi qu’un des anciens ouvriers de l’artiste (Monsieur Pelussi je crois) qui demeure toujours en contact avec la Fondation de l’Église Ste-Amélie. Dernièrement, la fabrique a voulu fermer l’Église dû à la faible fréquentation des paroissiens, mais les gens se sont opposés, même soulevés, pour empêcher sa fermeture. On a presque réussi et je crois qu’on va réussir. Tout cela pour vous dire que j’ai apprécié votre article dans votre magazine, mais je crois que vous devriez en faire un autre sur LE PETIT FILS DE GUIDO NINCHERI ET LE DERNIER DE SES OUVRIERS, il faut redonner a Guido Nincheri sa place comme LE PLUS GRAND MAITRE ITALIEN que le Canada et même l’Amérique du Nord a eu. Il est plus que temps que les Québécois connais-

Living Italian Style / Forza Azzurri By Tony Zara eceiving comments and letters from you, readers of Panoram Italia, is a very rewarding feeling. By doing so, you become more than just names on the mailing list; you become real persons with specific identities, of different age groups, of diverse backgrounds. Because you took the time to jot down your feelings, emotions, positive and at times negative reactions, and sent them to the attention of the Panoram Italia team, the concrete, down-to-earth management that publishing a magazine implies acquires an added dimension and meaning. It becomes a human experience. If a story or profile told by means of the appropriate words struck a chord with you or stirred your emotions, it makes all the hard work that went into it worthwhile. I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you, dear readers, young and old, of Italian origin and increasingly not, for letting us know how the images and words printed on our pages affect you. In the span of nine years, Panoram Italia has established quite a reputation for itself. It is ever more perceived as a true mirror of the urban, multiethnic Montreal reality with an Italian flavour expressed in three languages. This gives our magazine a sleek look, a cosmopolitan vision and an irresistible appeal. The old traditions of a sophisticated country like Italy are combined with the vibrancy of a modern, future-oriented country like Canada. Panoram Italia is the expression of a latinità del nord, a composite notion that encompasses apparently contrasting reference points. The sun of the Mediterranean sea with the white snow of the Laurentides and the green majesty of the Saint Lawrence valley. This apparent oxymoron, is the essence of us Italo-Montrealers. It is an evolving concept that acquires complexity with the passage of time. Sifting through the content of the hundreds of letters I receive on a monthly basis, our Living Italian Style gets the most attention by far. So many of you ask us how to make the cut and become one of the four lucky individuals featured in each issue. It is Montrealers between the age of 18-30 that are most eager to be featured, but suggestions to include older persons in their forties and fifties are increasing in number. A simple answer to these queries is: Simply join our Facebook page and express your interest on our wall. An administrator will get back to you with further details. The second most popular kind of letters asks: “How can I get my business promoted for free?” This we do not do. Any story that deals with a commercial endeavour is in truth an ADVERTORIAL. Panoram Italia is open to cover this kind of feature, but IT CHARGES FOR IT. SHOULD YOU NEED TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS, PLEASE CONTACT OUR SALES DEPARTMENT. The third most popular topic present in the letters I receive comes from a proud parent, sister, brother, son, daughter or spouse asking me and my team to write about the extraordinary achievements of a loved one. This we do, but we also reserve the right to be selective. If your story is truly unique, you might even be chosen as the cover story protagonists. Just keep sending your letters and ideas. We at Panoram Italia just love receiving them. We see you, our readers, as part of an extended family, not a passive audience. Louis Ruta: Trip of a lifetime Grand prize Winner The winner of the trip of a lifetime, a roundtrip to Italy for two, courtesy o f C a r l o C a r d o n e, o f AIR CANADA VACATIONS is Louis Ruta. Ruta was born in 1959 in Casalciprano in the Province of Campobasso in Molise. Louis, along with his parents and Pina Guercio of Air Canada brother immigrated to and Louis Ruta Montreal in 1967. Louis’ parents worked hard as a shoemaker and a seamstress to put him and his brother through University. Louis graduated from McGill with a BCOMM, and became a chartered accountant in 1983. He is now a Managing Partner at Bessner Gallay Kreisman. Louis is married to Lucia, they have three children20-year-old twin boys; Jonathan and Matthew, and a 14-year-old daughter, Cassandra. v

The Gold Medal, the Maple Leaf and Queen Elizabeth II By Filippo Salvatore
How sweet it felt and how loud the shout was on February 28, 2010 from coast to coast to coast! Millions of Canadians were glued to their television screens when Sidney Crosby scored the winning goal in overtime to beat the United States national hockey team and win Canada’s 14th and most coveted gold medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. he cheering was as loud and heartfelt when Montreal-born Team Canada goalie Roberto Luongo blocked 34 of 36 shots, making almost impossible saves. Massive street parties, hugging and spontaneous outbursts in the singing of “O Canada”, took place in every corner of our immense country. Seeing Crosby and Luongo and the rest of the team skate in the ring and wave the Maple Leaf high and proud was a magical, Roberto Luongo waving the Maple Leaf indelible moment. It felt so good to be a Canadian. The Olympic hype is gone. It is time now to ponder the symbols that define us as a people and as a country. The Confederation of Canada has existed since 1867 and is nowadays a mature democracy. De facto it is an independent country, but de jure is still a British dominion. Canadians still have a foreign monarch, Elizabeth II, Queen of England, at the pinnacle of their political hierarchy. Legally speaking, whether we like it or not, we have to swear allegiance to her and to her descendants. Canada is thus de jure still a colony. The question on who really is Canada’s head of state was brought to the fore last October when Governor General Michaelle Jean on two occasions in Paris, in a speech at a UNESCO meeting, referred to herself as ‘Canada’s head of state’. The role of Governor General was defined by Canwest News Service as “...the high-profile and largely ceremonial post as Canada’s de facto head of state”. (April 15, 2010) As a result of her declarations, Canada’s Governor General was chided by Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Office in a statement that declared: ”Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of Canada and head of state. The Governor General represents the Crown in Canada. “Buckingham Palace press officer steered clear of the legal argument between Governor General Jean and Prime Minister Harper; nonetheless, albeit hesitantly, he reiterated that “In terms of her official title, I presume the Queen is head of state in Canada”. Michaelle Jean’s five year appointment as GG will expire next September. During her visit in Senégal in April she confirmed that her mandate will not be renewed. Was she sacked because she perturbed the Loyalists ‘ sensitivity and the officials with the minute yet vociferous Monarchist League of Canada? But so had done former GGs Jeanne Sauvé and Adrienne Clarkson. The skirmish between Rideau Hall and the PM Office begs the question. Who ought to be Canada’s head of state? Last November when Prince Charles and his wife Camilla toured Canada “the crowds everywhere were light. Gone are the huge, star-struck throngs...”. In plain terms this means that the vast majority of Canadians showed no interest in wishing to meet the heir-in-waiting to the throne in the United Kingdom and, as a result, to the future King of Canada. Will Canadians show the same lack of interest towards Queen Elizabeth II when she will pay her subjects a visit next July? CBC reporters of British descent will put on, most likely and as

usual, their stiff upper lip, fake, insular accent and will underline the Queen’s grace and smile, her conservative parure and hats which inevitably will be defined as lovely. And of course there will be the ecstatic reaction broadcast on prime-time national news of a well-wisher or two who will be thrilled and excited to have shaken Her Majesty’s hand. Let us get ready for another fatuous sharade of Toronto-based colonial British heritage which costs us, as taxpayers, $50 million yearly. Queen Elizabeth II’s visit ought to be the right occasion to stir the debate about the anachronistic role the monarchy plays in today’s Canada and the need to abolish it. The leader of the Federal Liberal Party, Michael Ignatieff, is on record as being a strong proponent of a republican form of government. In 1992 he wrote in the British paper Observer “...The Royal Family is not doing its job... Now is the time for the republican tradition in Britain ( and in Canada I add) to find its voice again...” Severing our ties with the British monarchy is, no doubt, a legally complex, but not an insoluble issue. Constitutional negotiations will have to happen someday and the sooner the better. Let us not forget that Quebec has not yet ratified the current constitution when it was repatriated by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau in 1982. Abolishing the monarchy could certainly be a good start to bring Quebec into the national constitutional fold. For the federal Liberals, it is a chance to set a clear difference between themselves and the Conservatives about the way to conceive national identity. When Queen Elizabeth II’s term will come to an end, Canada should hold a referendum to decide whether to remain a monarchy or become a republic. This is not a futile dispute. It is at the root of our present and future national identity and is as significant as the debate that took place on the Canadian flag at the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s. After long, extenuating and vicious altercations between J. Dietenbaker’s Conservatives and L.B. Pearson’s Liberals, Parliament decided to set aside the Union Jack and adopt the Maple Leaf. It was a historic, irreversible decision; a momentous step in the creation of an indigenous symbol of Canadian identity. No responsible Canadian, not even the members of the Monarchist League, I would assume, will have the temerity to deny the legitimacy of the Maple Leaf as the quintessential symbolic expression of what it means to be a Canadian. Two thirds of Canada’s 33 million people is not from the British Isles and feels no link to the British Royal Family. The constitution of a country is the legal expression of the collective social contract and should “correspond to the quality of the times” as Niccolò Machiavelli would put it. Unfortunately, in today’s Canada there is a growing gap between the de facto and the de jure reality of our governmental institutions. In a truly democratic society, de jure atque de facto convertuntur (the reality and the law are interchangeable). As free citizens we should set the agenda and remind our politicians of this essential truth and oblige them to take the necessary legislative steps. Prime Minister Stephen Harper was cheering, like a tifoso watching a soccer game, when our national hockey team won the gold medal in Vancouver. He was as proud as each one of us . He should not forget that he was surrounded, rather wrapped, with red and white Maple Leafs, not Union Jacks, when citizens of every race and origin were shouting, shedding tears of joy and feeling so proud to be Canadian. The red maple leaf was and is the symbol of our collective identity. Our head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, is instead an anachronistic relic and embodies a colonial past that should go once she goes. v

Qu’avez-vous l’intention de faire pendant votre troisième mandat pour éviter que des scandales comme celui des compteurs d’eau se répètent? Immédiatement après l’élection nous avons mis à jour le code d’éthique des élus. Suite au rapport du vérificateur général, nous avons suivi plusieurs recommandations importantes. Quiconque possède des informations relatives à des irrégularités ou à du gaspillage peut en informer par personne interposée le vérificateur. Suite à la résiliation du contrat des compteurs d’eau, la nouvelle directrice générale, Rachel Laperrière, a demandé de revoir les mécanismes et les processus d’octroi des contrats, le rôle du privé et les mécanismes de reddition de compte, afin que les élus aient toutes les informations pertinentes pour prendre des décisions. Après les élections, j’ai dit à Louis Roquet, le directeur général de la Ville de Montréal, qu’il fallait aller plus loin encore et bâtir sur les recommandations de madame Laperrière. Tout ça dans le but de s’assurer d’avoir le meilleur soumissionnaire possible et aussi d’avoir un plus grand nombre de soumissionnaires. Si les contrats sont trop importants, nous allons les fractionner et donc en avoir plusieurs plus petits. Deuxièmement, nous avons éliminé la restriction de devoir connaître Montréal et troisièmement, nous avons préféré opter pour une évaluation externe des contrats. Finalement, nous avons renforcé notre équipe administrative au niveau juridique, financier, dans l’approvisionnement ou même du Greffe pour permettre aux élus de prendre les meilleures décisions possibles. À la réunion du 20 avril, en plus du code d’éthique des élus, on a confirmé aussi le code de conduite des employés. Ce code, basé sur la loyauté, l’intégrité et la transparence, stipule que tout employé ne pourra pas pendant les deux ans suivant son mandat aller travailler pour une entreprise qui a transigé avec la Ville de Montréal. Deux membres de chaque parti d’opposition font partie du comité exécutif de la Ville, dont le maire de Montréal est le président; deux grandes nouveautés. Les commissions du comité exécutif auront dorénavant à évaluer les contrats importants et à faire des recommandations au comité exécutif. On s’apprête à octroyer un contrat de plus de $100 millions relatif au service de radiophonie de la Ville de Montréal que le service de police et des incendies utilisent. Il sera scruté à la loupe. Dans le passé, le budget était déposé en décembre et l’opposition se plaignait de ne pas être consultée. Dorénavant le cadre budgétaire de la Ville sera analysé par deux commissions parlementaires, une issue de la Ville de Montréal et l’autre une commission mixte issue de l’agglomération. Mon souhait est qu’on transcende la partisannerie politique lorsqu’on aborde des enjeux stratégiques. 40 % des employés de la Ville de Montréal vivent en banlieue. Peut-on imposer l’obligation de demeurer à Montréal? Comment permettre l’embauche d’un pourcentage plus élevé d’employés issus des diverses communautés ethniques montréalaises? Un jugement de la court suprême du Canada décrète qu’aucune discrimination négative ou positive n’est possible sur la question de favoriser l’embauche d’employés résidant sur le territoire de la Ville. C’est donc impossible légalement. Par contre, on peut favoriser le transport en commun en aidant ainsi les gens à s’installer à Montréal sans qu’ils aient à se procurer une automobile. Nos employés viennent de partout. Il faut aussi noter que bien des gens qui demeurent à Montréal travaillent à la Ville de Laval ou de Longueuil. En investissant dans le transport en commun, on invite les gens à s’installer à Montréal. On préconise une approche incitative plutôt que coercitive. Suite pages 14-15

Lorsque j’ai commencé mon premier mandat, la ‘présence ethnique’ dans la fonction publique municipale était de l’ordre de 3%. Ce chiffre s’élève maintenant à un peu plus de 7% dans un contexte où l’embauche est limitée. Par contre, nous avons une politique d’égalité en emploi qui favorise les minorités visibles, les autochtones ou certains autres groupes pour qu’ils travaillent davantage à la Ville. Aussi, nous avons des stages payés offerts à des jeunes et des moins jeunes, en plus d’avoir implanté un programme nommé Valorisation Jeunesse en partenariat avec le gouvernement du Québec qui permet à 600 jeunes de travailler à Montréal. Notre objectif, c’est que la fonction publique municipale soit davantage représentative des communautés d’origine diverse. Dans le service de police ont parle de 30% des effectifs qui sont issus des communautés, incluant les femmes. De nombreux efforts restent à faire, mais nous avons établis différents mécanismes pour y arriver. Beaucoup de citoyens se plaignent souvent de l’absentéisme et du manque de productivité des employés de la Ville. Y a-t-il un réel problème à votre avis? Que doit-on faire pour le résoudre? C’est un problème qui n’existe pas uniquement à Montréal, mais dans l’ensemble de la fonction publique. On y travaille et depuis un certain temps on note une amélioration de la part des cols bleus, malgré les renégociations de leur convention collective qui sont en cours. On n’a qu’à regarder au niveau de la propreté des rues ou du service à la clientèle, notamment grâce au nouveau service 311 qui permet de recueillir les plaintes et les préoccupations des citoyens. Comment inciter les jeunes couples à rester à Montréal ? Quels sont les moyens envisagés pour rendre la propriété accessible ? Faut-il mettre en oeuvre une autre ‘Opération 20,000 logements’ ? Aucune administration municipale passée n’a réussi aussi bien que nous sur cette question. On avait annoncé la construction de 5,000 logements et nous y sommes parvenus. Lors de notre deuxième mandat, nous avions promis 10,000 logements abordables et 5,000 logements sociaux et avons atteint les 15,000. Nous nous sommes même engagés à en construire 5,000 de plus. On a annoncé récemment 25 projets résidentiels à Montréal. Du jamais vu! Dans notre Vision 20/25 nous prévoyons réaliser 75,000 unités de plus à Montréal entre 2010 à 2025. Montréal est en mutation importante au niveau du logement. Parmi ces projets, un bon nombre sont réalisés par des entrepreneurs de la communauté italienne. On a un programme d’incitatifs financiers pour les couples. Le principal objectif est la construction d’habitations avec trois chambres à coucher. Nous avions prévu 750 habitations en 2008 et nous en avons eu 1,250. Nous avons aussi augmenté l’aide financière à $12,500 pour les familles avec enfant(s). Tout ça en partenariat avec les différents paliers de gouvernement et des programmes d’aide comme Rénovation Logement. La Communauté Métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM), qui comprend Laval et Longueuil, couvre 50 % des frais relatifs à la construction de logements sociaux en partenariat avec notre programme d’insalubrité pour permettre, notamment aux familles des différentes populations immigrantes, de demeurer à Montréal. Sans oublier le programme de la Société d’Habitation avec son programme Accès Condo.
www.panoramitalia.com Quelles politiques entendez-vous établir avec les couronnes nord et sud pour relancer l’économie du Grand Montréal? On le fait en misant sur la stratégie des grappes industrielles dont trois sont bien connues : l’aérospatiale, les sciences de la vie (avec ses nombreux centres de recherche) et le CHUM, et finalement les technologies de l’information avec, notamment, l’industrie des jeux vidéo et du cinéma. Il y a aussi l’industrie des technologies propres avec le centre environnemental Saint-Michel. La ville de Montréal a même été invitée à l’exposition universelle de Shanghai avec Vancouver. C’est d’ailleurs la première fois que des villes sont invitées à participer à l’événement. Sans oublier les grappes de centres financiers qui bénéficient aussi de l’appui du Gouvernement du Québec. Le développement économique est au cœur des préoccupations de la CMM. Les banlieusards devraient-ils payer des frais pour les services que la Ville de Montréal offre? Des postes de péage sont-ils envisageables? C’est une vérité. On travaille depuis de nombreuses années pour convaincre nos partenaires et le gouvernement du Québec de nous donner une diversification de nos sources de revenus pour que l’on puisse investir dans nos infrastructures et nos services. La Ville de Montréal avec ses festivals et ses autres nombreux attraits attire beaucoup de monde venus de l’extérieur. Pour revenir à la question du logement social, les villes ont accepté de partager la facture. Dans le dernier budget, nous avons demandé au gouvernement du Québec de pouvoir imposer une taxe d’accise sur l’essence. Ça fait neuf ans que je la réclame. Pourquoi ? Pour investir davantage dans le transport en commun qui est concentré à 85 % à Montréal. Depuis 1996, aucune initiative n’a été faite en ce sens et c’est pourquoi depuis trois ans nous invitons la Ville de Laval et de Longueuil à partager le déficit de la STM avec nous. Maintenant, le métro est devenu un équipement de transport métropolitain et le déficit est partagé par l’ensemble des villes de la CMM qui composent la moitié de la population du Québec. Dans le dernier budget, pour combler le déficit de la STM de $ 40 millions, nous avons demandé au gouvernement, qui a accepté, le droit d’implanter une taxe d’accise de 1.5 cent le litre qui rapportera $53 millions. Nos partenaires de Longueuil et d’ailleurs devraient faire un effort supplémentaire et partager la facture avec nous. L’équité fiscale s’est donc améliorée. Par exemple, 20% des dépenses du centre-ville sont payées par les communautés de l’Ouest-de-l’Île. Comment prévoyez-vous favoriser le transport en commun dans le West Island? Devrait-on étendre le métro jusqu’à l’aéroport Pierre Elliott Trudeau? Pour ce qui est de l’accès difficile entre l’aéroport Trudeau et le centre-ville vous avez raison. Nous avons conclu une entente avec le gouvernement du Québec, le maire de Laval et la mairesse de Longueuil. Notre priorité est le prolongement de la ligne bleue d’une part, le prolongement de la ligne orange vers St-Laurent et le prolongement de la ligne jaune vers St-Hubert. Dans l’Ouest-de-l’Île les gens exigent l’amélioration des trains de banlieue, notamment sur la ligne de Rigaud. L’est réclame la réfection de la rue Notre-Dame, une ligne de bus rapide sur Pie-IX et un train de banlieue. On travaille sur un tram-train qui se rendra à Lachine, une navette ferroviaire et un tramway notamment dans le projet Turcot pour déplacer des gens de Lasalle, de Lachine et de l’Ouest-de-l’Île vers le centre-ville sans problème de congestion. La navette ferroviaire permettra de se rendre de l’aéroport au centre-ville en 21 minutes. Vous avez déclaré: « Il faut chasser le spectre de l’immobilisme. » Quels sont les grands projets qui vous animent pour les prochaines années ? Partagez-vous l’idée qu’il faut un grand virage pour relancer Montréal ? Des 33 recommandations du groupe de travail de la Chambre de Commerce du Montréal Métropolitain sur la gouvernance, quelles sont celles que vous partagez et qui vous inspirent? On assiste présentement à la métamorphose de la Ville de Montréal. Au centre-ville, il y a le Quartier des Spectacles, dont la première phase s’est terminée avec l’aménagement de la Place des Festivals. La phase deux est présentement en cours avec la nouvelle salle de l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. La phase trois, le réaménagement de la rue SainteCatherine, et la phase quatre, la maison du développement durable avec l’îlot Clark, sont à venir. S’ajoutent à ça dans le dernier budget, le Wilder et le 222. Plus loin dans l’ouest, dans Shaughnessy, il y a le Séville, qui va revitaliser Sainte-Catherine entre Guy et Atwater. Mais il y a d’autres projets que nous n’avons pas encore annoncés. Dans l’est il y a le ‘Quartier de la Vie’. On construit présentement au Jardin Botanique de Montréal le Centre de la biodiversité. C’est une force internationale pour Montréal qui possède aussi le secrétariat des Nations Unies sur la diversité biologique. Nous sommes une des quatre villes au monde qui prônent la biodiversité, avec Bonn, Curitiba et Nagoya. On construit également le nouveau planétarium, qui est un grand projet. Troisième grande initiative. Beaucoup de développements ont lieu dans le domaine des sciences de la vie avec le CUSUM qui bénéficiera d’investissements de $1.3 milliards et le Centre de Recherche du CHUM, et également les hôpitaux Juif, Sainte-Justine, MaisonneuveRosemont et Sacré Cœur. Quatrièmement, il y a le secteur Bonaventure et le développement de Griffintown et du Faubourg des Récollets. Pour ce qui est des 33 recommandations du rapport, beaucoup de ces décisions concernent le gouvernement du Québec et la conférence régionale des élus. Le rapport stipule entre autre qu’on a de plus en plus de structures. Le Conseil d’Arrondissement, un Conseil d’Agglomération, un Conseil de Ville, un Conseil de la CMM. Les gens souhaitent obtenir les meilleurs services au meilleur coût et veulent qu’on accélère les projets de développement à Montréal. Sur le démantèlement de l’autoroute Notre-Dame, l’Office de Consultation Publique a sévèrement critiqué le projet. Que répondez-vous aux allégations de gaspillage de fonds publiques pour des projets comme Bonaventure? La critique est plutôt venue pour Notre-Dame. Plus de $ 50 millions d’études ont été déboursés. Pour des questions de priorité et de sécurité, le projet important de l’heure c’est Turcot. Le projet Bonaventure n’a pas essuyé de si grandes critiques que ça. L’Office de Consultation Publique est même d’avis qu’il faut rabaisser l’autoroute comme on l’a fait pour l’échangeur du Parc, un projet qui a été chaudement applaudi, car on a redonné accès à la montagne aux Montréalais. On veut faire la même chose avec Bonaventure. La seule critique est venue à propos du corridor Dalhousie, à savoir comment on accueillera les autobus venus

www.panoramitalia.com de la Rive-Sud en nombre de plus en plus important. On est présentement en pourparler entre la Ville et la Société du Havre de Montréal. Abordons le rapport entre la ville de Montréal et le gouvernement du Québec. Montréal est perçue comme une parmi tant de régions, malgré le fait qu’elle compte près de 50 % de la population du Québec. Comment faire compter Montréal davantage? Ne pensez-vous pas que Montréal devrait avoir un poids aussi important auprès de Québec, que Québec par rapport à Ottawa? Oui, absolument. Et ça a commencé au mois de juin 2008, où pour la première fois dans la loi 22, le gouvernement du Québec a reconnu que Montréal était la métropole du Québec et la locomotive du développement économique. Dans le dernier budget, nous avons obtenu $175 millions en fonds de développement sur cinq ans, la taxe d’assises sur l’essence de 1,5 sous, et au niveau de la culture, $ 27 millions de Loto-Québec pour financer l’OSM, libérant ainsi $ 27 millions pour aider l’Opéra et le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. On a le Wilder qui va se bâtir à Montréal. Au niveau du transport et des sports, des décisions importantes ont aussi été prises. L’Institut national de santé publique du Québec au Stade Olympique va devenir une réalité avec des fonds de $ 24 millions. En plus, le gouvernement du Québec met de l’argent dans la grappe des services financiers. Il donne $ 150 millions à l’aérospatiale et a investi $ 250 millions dans la navette ferroviaire. Le changement de mentalité et de culture devient de plus en plus une réalité, car on réalise que si Montréal accélère son développement, ça va être bon pour toutes les régions du Québec. Le virage a été fait dans le dernier budget. Ça a pris du temps, mais nous y sommes arrivés. Moi, en politique, je suis un marathonien et je prends le temps nécessaire pour arriver à des résultats concrets. On a énormément de projets pour créer de la richesse pour l’ensemble des Montréalais. Quel serait le rêve qui ferait de Montréal une grande ville internationale? Comment faire de Montréal quelque chose d’unique qui transcende le Québec et le Canada ? On compare toujours les époques et certaines personnes sont nostalgiques du passé. Je pense très sérieusement que ce que Jean Drapeau a réalisé pendant les années 60 et 70 serait très difficile à réaliser aujourd’hui. Il a donné une renommé internationale avec le parc Jean-Drapeau et l’Expo‘67, ainsi qu’avec les Olympiques, le métro et la ville souterraine. Il faut le reconnaître. Il a poussé énormément pour construire de grandes infrastructures comme Bonaventure ou Décarie. On ne pourrait plus faire ça aujourd’hui. Il avait une vision grandiose de développement, et c’est Drapeau qui a fait en sorte que 50 millions de personnes sont venues à Montréal. Aujourd’hui, on a plus de 125 différentes communautés ethniques à Montréal. La grande réussite de notre Ville est la grande harmonie qu’on a su créer entre les ethnies. Nous sommes une ville de paix. Et pour nous, le principe de respect, de dignité humaine et de justice sociale est très important. Montréal a des atouts importants. C’est déjà une ville internationale qui compte près de 90 consulats et 60 organismes internationaux en plus de l’Organisation de l’aviation civile internationale (OACI) et l’International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Montréal est une ville de créateurs dans l’ensemble des secteurs. C’est un avantage compétitif, car ces créateurs rayonnent. Et on ne parle pas uniquement de la culture. On parle du secteur de la mode, du cinéma, des jeux vidéo, de l’architecture, etc. Nous voulons être une métropole culturelle, mais aussi une ville reconnue à travers le monde pour sa performance dans le transport collectif. Qu’entendez-vous faire pour la sauvegarde des espaces verts et du Mont-Royal? Avant mon arrivée à l’hôtel de ville, il existait un moratoire sur la protection des espaces verts sur le territoire de la Communauté urbaine de Montréal. Nous avons pris l’engagement d’investir $ 12 millions par année pour protéger nos éco-territoires. De 2 %, notre objectif était de passer à 8 %. Nous sommes présentement à 5 %. Dans le dernier budget, on a annoncé $ 21 millions pour les parcs, $ 7 millions pour les grands parcs (Jean-Drapeau, Maisonneuve, Angrignon) et $ 14 millions pour les plus petits. La montagne c’est notre héritage commun. J’ai toujours dit depuis que j’ai été élu en 2001 : ’Ce qui est vert doit rester vert’. On a permis certains empiétements, par exemple la construction du mausolée qui n’a toutefois pas été construit sur un espace vert, mais sur le site d’une ancienne serre abandonnée. L’agrandissement du stade des Alouettes a nécessité qu’on coupe quelques arbres, mais nous en avons planté encore plus. L’objectif, c’est de s’assurer qu’on a un plan grâce à une table de concertation présidée par M. Claude Corbo de l’UQAM pour la mise en valeur du Mont-Royal. On travaille avec les Amis de la montagne, mais aussi avec Héritage Montréal et le Conseil régional de l’environnement. L’augmentation moyenne des taxes résidentielles de 5.3 % et la chute du PIB de 5 % à cause de la crise économique internationale a produit un appauvrissement réel de 10 % à Montréal. Le système actuel d’imposition foncière basé sur la spéculation finit par pénaliser les petits propriétaires. Faudrait-il trouver un autre système d’imposition? L’évaluation municipale découle d’une loi du gouvernement du Québec, qui oblige une réévaluation à chaque trois ans. Mon administration tente de l’étendre à quatre ans. La question de l’évaluation municipale est préoccupante. Elle l’est d’autant plus pour les aînés qui ne veulent pas vendre leur maison. L’évaluation municipale n’a aucun impact sur le niveau de taxation, car ceux qui ont une évaluation plus importante donnent des sous à ceux qui ont une évaluation moins importante. Et nous à la Ville de Montréal ne recevons pas de revenu additionnel. Pendant huit ans, on n’a pas augmenté le fardeau fiscal global des contribuables, sauf pour la taxe d’eau et une taxe sur la voirie pour remédier au problème des nids de poule et des routes. Si on avait augmenté selon le taux d’inflation durant les cinq dernières années, ça aurait donné $ 304. L’augmentation de 5.3 % ne représente que $ 102. L’inflation existe. Pour maintenir les services on a été obligé de faire le récent rattrapage en dépit de la conjoncture économique difficile. On va continuer à gérer avec transparence et de façon équilibrée nos finances publiques, qui, toutefois, restent fragiles puisque, contrairement aux paliers de gouvernement fédéral et provincial, le municipal n’a pas le droit de faire de déficit. v

Un elettore su tre si astiene. La Lega diventa un’onda verde al Nord. Scacco matto del Pdl nel Lazio. il Pd messo all’angolo da Vendola in Puglia. Avanza Di Pietro e sorprende Grillo. l centro destra conquista 6 regioni e di fatto vince le elezioni amministrative 2010 strappando al Pd Lazio, Piemonte, Campania e Calabria mentre al centro sinistra rimangono 7 regioni, le “fedelissime”. Al Nord La Lega diventa un’onda verde. Trionfa in Piemonte con Cota ed in Veneto con Zaia, attuale Ministro dell’Agricultura, che raggiunge la vittoria con il 60,1 %, un risultato entusiasmante. Zaia, rassegna le dimissioni da Ministro per dedicarsi, come nuovo governatore di regione, ai Veneti. Nella lunga notte della Lega, la soddisfazione per i risultati raggiunti è palpabile. L’Italia si avvia in modo concreto verso il federalismo fiscale. Tante le congratulazioni per la neo elezione alla provincia di Brescia di Renzo Bossi figlio del Senatur Umberto.

Il Carroccio supera di misura anche il Pdl di Silvio Berlusconi, accreditandosi come il primo partito in due importanti regioni come il Veneto ed il Piemonte e riesce a rosicchiare consensi anche nelle rosse Emilia Romagna e Marche con percentuali a due cifre. Sorprendente anche l’affermazione nelle regioni rosse del movimento fondato da Beppe Grillo che ha la sua forza soprattutto nella rete elettronica. Segno questo che il radicamento territoriale ed il comizio della Lega, l’uso quasi da partito unico della televisione del Pdl di Berlusconi, trovano nella rete telematica un avversario nuovo ed un potente mezzo di persuasione, soprattutto dei giovani e delle fasce più istruite. Al Nord il Pd conserva la Liguria, unica regione che riesce a sfuggire al fascino leghista. Al Partito Democratico rimangono Toscana, Basilicata, Emilia Romagna, Umbria, Marche, Liguria e Puglia, che mantengono intatta un certa coerenza politica costruita nel tempo e solidificatasi nella cultura locale. I risultati sono cocenti per il Partito Democratico in particolare nel Lazio. La radicale Emma Bonino,una candidatura di prestigio, subisce una pesante sconfitta. Il risultato elettorale nel Lazio, regione in cui si era sperato la rimonta, è stato un testa a testa che ha lasciato col fiato sospeso fino all’ultimo, con uno scarto di voti non particolarmente elevato, ma decisivo. É la città di Roma che decreta vincitrice alla Presidenza della Regione la sindacalista Renata Polverini. In Lombardia, Formigoni del Pdl, fa poker d’assi; vince per la quarta volta la poltrona di governatore e batte Penati con uno scarto di voti considerevole. Il risultato lascia poco spazio ai commenti e molti alle feste e agli slanci di entusiasmo del neo (ri) eletto. Un’altra zampata del Pdl si registra in Campania dove Caldoro supera De Luca, candidato del Pd, con un risultato plebliscitario, oltre le aspettative. Anche la provincia di Caserta, esprime unanime la voglia di cambiare dando piena fiducia al Pdl. Dulcis in fundo la Puglia. Nichi Vendola, l’unico candidato che si pensava non dovesse vincere, sbanca invece e porta a casa un ottimo risultato per una colaizione arcobaleno di sinistra che lascia sgomenti gli alleati del Pd che avevano avversato la sua candidatura. C’è già chi vede il governatore pugliese Nichi Vendola come il leader futuro della sinistra. L’Udc di Pierferdinando Casini che correva da solo con la Poli Bortone, ha sottratto al candidato del Pdl una percentuale di voti abbastanza grande da farlo perdere. Il centrismo dell’Udc e le sue contraddittorie alleanze dimostrano la sua crescente irrilevanza in un sistema politico sempre di più bipolare. Il primo partito delle elezioni regionali in Italia del 2010 è quello dell’ astensionismo che si è registrato in ogni regione. Il mancato esercizio del voto va visto come il termomentro della disillusione e della sfiducia nella politica di una percentuale preoccupante del popolo italiano. Oltre ai vinti e vincitori, la vera la domanda a cui occorrerebbe trovare una risposta è questa: perché una percentuale tanto alta di cittadini italiani, non ha esercitato il suo diritto-dovere di voto? v

Nella relazione introduttiva Giovanni Rapanà, Consigliere del CGI e Consigliere Comunale di Montreal ha affermato che il Comites di Montreal e il CGIE del Canada avevano pensato questa iniziativa seminariale come momento di analisi e di proposte finalizzato ad avanzare riforme del settore della comunicazione italiana all’estero. Poi con il decreto milleproroghe sono arrivati i tagli del governo all’editoria italiana all’estero che colpisce in forma inaccettabile giornali che avevano investito sia in termini di struttura che di personale. Una scelta che mette a rischio la continuità stessa di alcune testate e che non incide in nessuna maniera sul problema del recupero delle risorse da parte dello Stato per far fronte alla crisi.

Alcune delle testate giornalistiche all’estero, che avevano avviato la loro attività decenni fa a partire dalle problematiche dell’emigrazione tradizionale, avevano già accettato la sfida di navigare nel mondo della globalizzazione, operando in Paesi multiculturali e plurilingue e puntando su una informazione sempre piu’ completa e differenziata, interattiva e fondata sull’uso delle piu’ moderne tecnologie informatiche. È incomprensibile – ha affermato Rapanà – che mentre tutti i principali Paesi rafforzano le loro proiezioni nel mondo, a partire dagli istituti dei loro concittadini residenti all’estero, l’Italia, dopo aver tagliato i servizi consolari, i corsi di lingua e cultura, e il sistema Italia nel mondo, approva una serie di tagli che sono inaccettabili e improduttivi. Infine il consigliere del CGIE Canada, dopo aver pro-posto un documento di iniziativa a termine dei lavori rivolto a tutti gli italiani all’estero, ha chiesto una unità trasversale tra tutte le componenti finalizzata al ripristino delle risorse per la stampa e ad un rinnovato intervento in favore delle nostre collettività. Due specifiche relazioni sono seguite, una del segretario nazionale della FNSI Franco Siddi e una del Presidente del Centro Relazioni Internazionali Luciano Neri. Siddi ha affermato che l’informazione e’ un bene pubblico fondamentale da tutelare e sostenere, non in forma assistenziale ma come risposta strategica a sostegno di aziende che offrono informazione in forma professionale e con l’impiego di strutture moderne e giornalisti qualificati. Luciano Neri da parte sua ha sottolineato la differenza tra l’Italia e il Canada, Paese che, al contrario del nostro, ha investito sull’economia della conoscenza, sulla valorizzazione della cultura, della formazione e dell’informazione, riuscendo così a superare qualsiasi difficoltà derivante dalla crisi internazionale, quella stessa crisi che determina invece effetti pesantissimi in termini economici ed occupazionali sull’Italia. Al termine dei lavori è stato presentato un documento di iniziative, approvato all’unanimità, che verrà inviato a tutti i parlamentari, agli organismi istituzionali e associativi dell’emigrazione italiana e ai cittadini. Le soccer dans la vie de Cesi et Tony Le soccer était plus qu’un sport pour nous. C’était une façon de nous affirmer collectivement. Jouer une partie de soccer, c’était comme livrer une bataille sur le terrain. Nous avions une cause à défendre : démontrer à nos opposants à quel point nous pouvions être bons en tant qu’Italiens.

a rencontre avec Cesidio et Tony a lieu au centre communautaire Leonardo da Vinci de Saint-Léonard. En direction du rendez-vous, je suis pris dans un bouchon sur l’autoroute Métropolitain. J’ai vingt minutes de retard lorsque je pénètre dans l’énorme agora pavée de marbre qui rappelle une piazza intérieure, le point de rencontre naturel de toutes les villes et villages du bassin méditerranéen. C’est dans cette esplanade que les adolescents forgent leur caractère. C’est là aussi, sur la piazza, dans le vieux continent, qu’on apprend les rouages des relations humaines et qu’on vit bien souvent son rite de passage vers l’âge adulte. Cette vision me traverse l’esprit alors que je pousse la porte d’entrée de l’édifice. Ils sont là, assis à une table sirotant un espresso. « Quarante ans sont déjà passés! », me dis-je à moi-même, en saluant chaleureusement par une poignée de main deux messieurs à la chevelure poivre et sel, légèrement corpulents, au début de la soixantaine. Mon corps doit être une copie conforme de ce qu’ils ont l’air. Nous passons du dialecte abruzzese et molisano à l’anglais et au français -comme c’est la norme pour les ItaloMontréalais- alors que nous tentons de résumer en quelques paroles les événements importants de nos vies. Cesidio Silla et Anonio Ruscitto sont deux anciens amis à moi. Cesidio est né à Scanno en 1948, une jolie bourgade accrochée dans les montagnes des Abruzzes, non loin de l’Aquila, dans le centre de l’Italie. Scanno a pendant longtemps été le point de départ de la transhumance, la migration saisonnière des troupeaux de moutons le long des tratturi (corridors de pâturages). Cette pratique a connu une fin abrupte au courant des années 1950 avec l’industrialisation de l’Italie. Ceci eût pour effet d’obliger les pauvres bergers à délaisser leurs terres, faute d’emploi. Cesidio immigra ainsi à Montréal avec sa famille en 1959. Ils s’établirent, comme bien d’autres familles italiennes près de l’église Madonna di Pompei, nouvellement construite au coin des rues Sauvé et Saint-Michel. Il fréquenta une des deux écoles secondaires « italiennes » (Pie X dans Ahuntsic et John F. Kennedy dans Saint-Michel) jusqu’à l’âge de 16 ans. Il entreprit ensuite une carrière dans la vente et occupe aujourd’hui le poste de vice-président chez Husky Foods, une compagnie d’importation de produits alimentaires allemands. Il s’est marié en 1972 avec Filomena Mignacca, est le père de trois filles, Rosina, Sabrina et Joanna, et a trois petits-enfants. Il demeure à Laval depuis maintenant trente ans. L’histoire de Tony Ruscitto est à peu d’exceptions près la même que celle de Cesi. Il est ce qu’on pourrait qualifier un immigrant « entre deux », né à Casacalenda, un village dessiné en forme de croix, juché au sommet d’une colline surplombant la digue artificielle de Guardialfiera et la vallée fertile du Biferno dans le Molise, mais qui a grandi au Canada. Les immigrants de Casacalenda commencèrent à s’établir à Montréal à partir de la fin du 19 e siècle. Ils jouèrent un rôle important dans la construction de l’église Madonna della Difesa il y a un siècle. Cette église contient d’impressionnantes fresques réalisées par le peintre Guido Nincheri et est classée monument historique. Casacalenda et Cattolica Eraclea en Sicile sont les deux villes italiennes qui ont le plus contribué à grossir les rangs de la communauté italienne du Grand Montréal. Tony Ruscitto a fréquenté les cours du soir en en administration des affaires à l’Université Concordia. Il a travaillé comme commis de banque et occupe maintenant le poste d’administrateur à l’école secondaire Loyola. Il s’est marié en 1972 avec la sœur de Cesidio, Maria Silla. Il est le père de deux garçons, Pasquale et Andrea et le grand-père d’Antonio, Emma et Micheal. Il vit à Laval depuis vingt ans.
’appuntamento con Cesi e Tony è al Centro Leonardo da Vinci a Saint Leonard. Mi trovo preso in un ingorgo sull’autostrada 40 direzione est. Arrivo con venti minuti di ritardo quando entro nell’atrio, con pavimento e muri coperti di marmo, che fa pensare ad una piazza mediterranea. La piazza del paese, l’agorà, è stata per millenni e rimane il luogo d’incontro naturale nel vecchio continente. É in piazza che gli adolescenti scoprono la complessità dei rapporti umani, imparano l’arte di farsi valere, acquistano autorità e rispetto, diventano uomini. Nello spingere la porta questo pensiero,anche se fugace, mi colpisce fortemente. Eccoli, Cesi e Tony, seduti ad un tavolino mentre chiacchierano e bevono un espresso. -Che differenza fanno quarant’anni!- mi dico nel salutare e dare la mano a due uomini sulla sessantina con i capelli bianchi, un pò corpulenti. Il mio corpo deve essere diventato ai loro occhi una copia carbone della loro apparenza. Passiamo dall’abruzzese e molisano all’inglese, al francese -come siamo abituati a fare noi italo/montrealesinel cercare di riassumere in poche frasi gli avvenimenti importanti che sono occorsi in tanti anni nella vita di ognuno di noi. Cesidio Silla e Antonio Ruscitto sono due miei vecchi amici.Cesidio è nato nel 1948 a Scanno, un bel borgo di pietra degli Appennini abruzzesi, vicino a L’Aquila. Scanno è stato per secoli il punto di partenza della transumanza, la migrazione delle greggi lungo il tratturo in primavera ed in autunno alla ricerca di pascoli. La transumanza è finita di colpo negli anni Cinquanta quando è avvenuta l’industrializzazione anche nel Mezzogiorno. Molti pastori sono rimasti senza lavoro e sono stati obbligati ad emigrare. I Silla sono venuti a Montreal nel 1959 e sono andati ad abitare, come tante altre famiglie italiane, vicino alla chiesa Madonna di Pompei, da poco eretta all’angolo di Sauvé e St Michel. Cesidio ha frequentato una delle due High Schools ‘italiane’, Pius X e John F. Kennedy fino a sedici anni. Poi ha cominciato a lavorare come rappresentante alle vendite ed è oggi vice-presidente di Husky Foods, una ditta che si specializza nell’importazione di prodotti alimentari tedeschi. Si è sposato nel 1972 con Filomena Mignacca da cui ha avuto tre figlie, Rosina, Sabrina e Joanna.Oggi è il nonno di tre nipoti e risiede a Laval da una trentina d’anni Il percorso umano di Antonio Ruscitto è per diversi aspetti simile a quello di Cesidio. É un ‘immigrato ‘in bilico’. É nato nel 1950 a Casacalenda, un paese molisano a forma
y meeting with Cesi and Tony is at the Leonardo da Vinci Community Centre in Saint Léonard. I am caught in a traffic jam as I drive eastwards along highway 40. I am 20 minutes late when I enter the spacious, marble covered lobby which recalls an indoor piazza, the natural gathering place in every village or town around the Mediterranean basin. It is there in the piazza, in the agorà, that a teenager’s wits are tested and sharpened. It is there, in the piazza, that in the old country, one learned the intricacies in human relations and became a man and acquired authority and respect. It is just a fleeting, yet powerful flash in my mind as I push the door open. There they are, sitting at a table, sipping an espresso. -What a difference forty years makes!- I say to myself as I greet and shake hands warmly with two white-haired gentlemen on the heavy side in their early sixties. My body must be the carbon copy of what they have become and look like. We switch from Abruzzese and Molisano dialect to English to French -as Montreal Italians are accustomed to doas we try to sum up in a few sentences all the important events that occurred in the span of many years in our lives. Cesidio Silla and Antonio Ruscitto are two old friends of mine. Cesidio was born in 1948 in Scanno, a lovely mountain resort in Abruzzo, not far from L’Aquila, in central Italy. Scanno was for centuries the starting point of transhumance, the seasonal migration of sheep herds along the tratturi (herbal highways) in the spring and in the fall in search of fresh grazing grounds. Transhumance came to an abrupt end in the 1950’s when Italy became an industrialized nation. As a result many, unemployed shepherds were obliged to emigrate. Cesidio came to Montreal with his family in 1959 and settled, like many other Italian families, close to the newly built Madonna di Pompei parish Church at the corner of Sauvé and St Michel. He attended one of the two ‘Italian’ high schools (Pius X in Ahuntsic and John F. Kennedy in St Michel) till the age of sixteen. Then he began working as a salesman and is today a vice-president at Husky Foods, an import company that specializes in German food products. He got married in 1972 with Filomena Mignacca and has three daughters, Rosina, Sabrina and Joanna and three grandchildren. He has been a Laval resident for the last thirty years. Tony Ruscitto’s story is in many ways similar to Cesi’s. He is an “in-between immigrant”, born in 1950 in Casacalenda, a village that recalls the shape of a cross on top of a hill overlooking the artificial lake of Guardialfiera and the fertile valley of the Biferno river in Molise. Immigrants from Casacalenda have been arriving in Montreal since the end of the 19th century. They played a major role in building the Madonna della Difesa Church about a century ago. It contains impressive frescos by Guido Nincheri and is today considered a Canadian historical monument. Casacalenda and Cattolica Eraclea in Sicily are possibly the two Italian towns that contributed the largest contingents to the formation and growth of the greater Montreal Italian community. Tony Ruscitto attended night school in business administration at Concordia. He worked as a bank clerk and is today an administrator at Loyola High School. He has been married since 1972 with Cesidio’s sister Maria Silla and is the father of two sons, Pasquale and Andrea and grandfather to Antonio, Emma and Michael. He has been living in Laval for the last two decades. Besides being brothers in law Cesi and Tony have a common passion: il gioco del calcio, soccer. ‘Soccer, Cesi says, is today an accepted and mainstream sport in Canada.You can make a career out it and play in front of thousands of fans. It has become as popular as hockey or football. It was not the case when we were teenagers. In the 1950’s and 1960’s soccer was frowned upon, it was viewed as a foreign sport that only freshly arrived immigrants played or were interested in.’ “I agree,” underlines Tony. “It is true that soccer had an ‘ethnic’ connotation, but we did not mind it. We were in our

www.panoramitalia.com En plus d’être beaux frères, Cesi et Tony partagent une passion: le soccer. « Aujourd’hui le soccer est un sport apprécié et respecté au Canada », affirme Cesi. « Tu peux en faire une carrière et jouer devant des milliers de partisans. C’est devenu presqu’aussi populaire que le hockey ou le football. Ce n’était pas vraiment le cas lorsqu’on était adolescent. Dans les années 1950 et 1960, on levait le nez sur le soccer. C’était perçu comme un sport étranger réservé aux immigrants fraîchement débarqués. » « J’approuve tout à fait » ajoute Tony. Le soccer possédait une connotation ethnique, mais ça ne nous dérangeait pas. Nous étions dans la fleur de l’âge, nouvellement arrivés au pays et avions besoin d’une activité dans laquelle canaliser notre énergie, où nous pouvions nous sentir à notre aise et partager un sentiment d’appartenance et de camaraderie. Le soccer était plus qu’un sport pour nous. C’était une façon de nous affirmer collectivement. Jouer une partie de soccer, c’était comme livrer une bataille sur le terrain. Nous avions une cause à défendre : démontrer à nos opposants à quel point nous pouvions être bons en tant qu’Italiens. Notre maxime était : ‘Ou tu gagnes, ou tu leur bottes les fesses !’ Mais, faire partie d’une équipe comme les glorieuses Kalena, Superga ou Saint-Michel dans les années 1960, avait une signification plus grande encore. C’était un moyen de s’évader et de rester avec ses amis sans dévier du droit chemin. On jouait pour un sandwich à la mortadelle et un verre de bière. Grâce à la discipline qu’imposait jouer au soccer, nous sommes demeurés de bons citoyens. On adorait être ensemble. On n’avait pas de modèles et on a trouvé nos mentors auprès de la police avec le sergent Rosa, dans la paroisse de Pompéi avec le père Giuseppe Duchini, ou à l’école Pie X, avec le professeur Dino Giuliani, un grand coach qui a joué un rôle significatif dans notre éducation et dans notre intégration à la société canadienne. Il nous a enseigné à devenir de bons citoyens. » Pourquoi Cesi et Tony continuent-ils toujours de pratiquer le sport et s’entraînent avec des jeunes comme Adam Campolieto? « C’est un bon exercice qui aide à conserver la forme. Prendre une bière après la partie avec les amis de longue date, des gens que tu respectes et apprécies, devient une forme de thérapie. On parle de nos vies, de nos familles, de nos difficultés et de nos rêves, » explique Cesi. J’ai décidé de devenir coach parce que la nouvelle génération avait besoin de modèles. Je cherche à donner ce que je n’avais pas quand j’étais adolescent. Les jeunes joueurs me regardent avec respect et enthousiasme. À 62 ans, je peux encore les surprendre. » La conversation avec Cesi et Tony a réveillé tant de souvenirs. Eux et moi et tant d’autres comme nous, appartenons à la « génération entre deux » qui a su surmonter le départ difficile vers un autre pays et les préjugés sociaux, pour atteindre une meilleure condition sociale et faire sa place au sein de la société d’accueil. Notre douloureuse dualité nous a endurcis et inspirés. Et, croyez-le ou non, le fait d’être alors joueur et aujourd’hui entraîneur, a joué un rôle important pour forger ce que nous sommes devenus : de fiers Italo-Canadiens. v

Tony Ruscitto ha frequentato corsi serali in economia e amministrazione all’università Concordia. Dopo aver lavorato per diversi anni in una banca, è diventato uno degli amministratori della Loyola High School. È coniugato dal 1972 con Maria Silla, la sorella di Cesidio, ha due figli, Pasquale ed Andrea, e tre nipoti Antonio, Emma e Michael. Anche Tony vive a Laval da venti anni. Oltre ad essere cognati, Cesi e Tony hanno una passione in comune: il gioco del calico. ‘Il calcio, o soccer, come lo chiamano qui, spiega Cesi, è al giorno d’oggi uno sport popolare ed accettato. Si può addirittura fare una carriera come calciatore e giocare davanti a migliaia di spettatori. Il calcio è oggi in Canada popolare come l’hockey o il football, ma non era il caso quando noi eravamo adolescenti. Negli anni ‘50 e ‘60 veniva visto male e considerato uno sport straniero che piaceva solo agli immigrati arrivati da poco.’ ‘Sono d’accordo, sottolinea Tony. É vero che il calcio aveva una connotazione ‘etnica’, ma a noi non ci importava. Eravamo nel fiore degli anni, recentemente giunti qui ed avevamo bisogno di un’attività nella quale canalizzare la nostra energia, che ci permettesse di sentirci a nostro agio e di provare un senso di appartenenza e di accettazione. Il calcio per noi era più di un semplice sport, era una forma collettiva di affermazione. Giocare una partita significava partecipare ad una battaglia sul campo. Far parte di una squadra come la Kalena, la Superga, il Saint Michel negli anni 1960 aveva anche un significato supplementare. Era una forma di ‘ritiro’, un modo di stare con gli amici ed evitare di prendere la strada sbagliata. Ci bastava un panino con la mortadella ed una birra. Grazie alla disciplina che il gioco del calcio richiedeva, siamo diventati tutti dei buoni cittadini. Ci piaceva tanto stare insieme. Non avevamo modelli umani da imitare. Le uniche guide che abbiamo avuto sono state il sergente della polizia di Montreal Rosa, il prete della parrocchia Madonna di Pompei Giuseppe Duchini,ed un insegnante della St Pius X High School, Dino Giuliani, che ha svolto un ruolo importante nell’insegnarci ad integrarci nella società canadese ed a farci diventare adulti onesti. Perché Cesi e Tony alla bella età di sessant’anni si occupano ancora di calcio e giocano con giovani come Adam Campolieto? ‘Ci permette di fare un pò d’esercizio, ci mantiene in forma e dopo la partitella, e bere una birra con vecchi amici che conosci bene e che rispetti diventa una sessione terapeutica. Ci raccontiamo successi, sconfitte, sogni, parliamo delle nostre famiglie e del significato della vita. Sono diventato allenatore, spiega Cesi, perché le nuove generazioni hanno bisogno di adulti come modelli umani da emulare. Sto dando loro quello che mi è mancato da alolescente. I ragazzi mi trattano con rispetto. Sono stupiti di rendersi conto che a sessant’anni suonati sono ancora un osso duro per loro che sono giovani.’ La conversazione con Cesi e Tony mi fa tornare in mente tanti ricordi. Loro, io stesso, e tanti come noi apparteniamo alla generazione ‘in bilico’ nata in Italia e cresciuta in Canada; una generazione che ha saputo non solo liberarsi dei tanti pregiudizi e stereotipi e senso di alienazione che provavamo in Canada, un paese che sentivamo allora ancora straniero, ma anche farsi accettare ed inserirsi nella scala sociale. ‘La nostra ibridità dolorosa, riassume Tony, si è trasformata con il passare degli anni in una complessità che ispira. Può sembrare strano, ma giocare a calcio allora e fare l’allenatore ora costituisce per me una parte importante nel definirci chi siamo, fieri Italo/Canadesi.’ v

Being part of a team, like the glorious Kalena, Superga or Saint Michel in the 1960’s had also an added meaning. It was a form of ‘ritiro’, a way to be with your friends and avoid going astray. We just played for a mortadella sandwich and a glass of beer. Thanks to the discipline that playing soccer demanded, all of us became good citizens. We just loved being together. We had no role models and found our mentors in a Montreal police sergeant, Mr Rosa, in the Pompei parish priest Padre Giuseppe Duchini, or in one of the teachers at Pius X High, Dino Giuliani, a great coach, who played a significant role in teaching us how to integrate into Canadian society. He played quite a role in moulding us into honest and law-abiding adults.” Why are Cesi and Tony, now in their early sixties, involved in soccer and still play with young men like Adam Campolieto? “It is good exercise, Cesi explains, keeps us in shape and after the game having a beer with your buddies, with people you know and respect, becomes a therapy session. We speak about our achievements, our failures, our families, our dreams, about the meaning of life. I decided to become a coach, because the new generations need role models. I am providing to them what I was lacking as a teenager. Young players look at me with respect and amazement. At the age of sixtytwo I am still able to challenge them.” The conversation with Cesi and Tony has brought back so many personal memories. They and I and so many others like us, belong to the “in between generation” that moved from prejudice, stereotypes and emotional estrangement we felt in Canada, a country that still felt foreign, to acceptance and social upward mobility. “Our painful hybridity, Tony sums up, turned over the years into an inspiring complexity. And believe it or not, playing soccer then and coaching it now constitutes an important part in defining who we are, proud Italian/Canadians.” v

ay 15th, 2010 marked the hundredth anniversary of the Italian national team’s first game, played in 1910 against France for a 6-2 victory. A century and change later, Marcello Lippi’s Azzurri will undoubtedly be looking to defend their world title; a feat only once accomplished by Italy courtesy of legendary coach Vittorio Pozzo’s Italian national squads of the 1930s. Despite popular belief rendering them underdogs to Spain and Brazil, il mister and co. will land in Cape Town, South Africa on June 14th savvy to the expectations of the millions of tifosi worldwide. Their group includes second-placed South American qualifiers Paraguay, European surprises Slovakia, and third worst ranked team of the competition New Zealand. Since history is often discussed leading up to major tournaments, Italian fans will appreciate the fact that the Azzurri have never lost or drawn against Paraguay or Slovakia (once Czechoslovakia) in World Cup games. They’ll also be pleased to know that this term marks the only other time Italy has qualified for the tournament with one game in hand aside from 1982 and 2006 - both winning years. On a sourer note however, no European team has ever won the trophy outside of Europe, and the only South American side to have won away from their continent was Brazil in 1958 and 2002. The Azzurri will naturally face a far stronger challenge if they hit the knockout stage’s round of 16. They’re slated to play the winner or runner-up of group E - made up of the Netherlands, Denmark, Cameroon, and Japan. In terms of favourites, when weighing all options, most would agree on the greatest of likelihoods: Italy winning group F and Denmark or Cameroon finishing second in group E.

It goes without saying that any further predictions are rather useless at this point. The only certainty at the world’s most popular sporting event is that viewers from around the globe are in for an epic clash of national pride, sure to stir up the highest emotions and everlasting memories. Can Italy repeat 2006? Will Lionel Messi lead Argentina to a third trophy? Will Brazil or Spain live up to the hype? Stay tuned to find out! “Siamo campioni del mondo! Campioni del mondo! Campioni del mondo!” Words that resonate within every Italian football fan whenever Germany ’06 comes to mind.Already, four years have passed since Fabio Grosso carved such an important place in our hearts by winning a last minute penalty against Australia, scoring a magnificent extra time left-footer against Germany, and taking the final spot kick against France to send us to world glory. It’s still hard to fathom how Fabio Cannavaro, Marco Materazzi, and Gianluigi Buffon managed to set Berlin ablaze on that faithful evening of July 9th, but they did. And we’re eternally grateful for it.
Euro 2008’s turbulent start inspired little hope for a possible 1-2 World Cup-Euro punch. The embarrassing 3-0 loss to Holland and the fortunate draw against Romania following Buffon’s miraculous save on Adrian Mutu’s penalty shot wasn’t how coach Donadoni’s side envisioned their tournament unfolding. Having saved face with a convincing win against France, Italy crashed out of Euro following a disappointing penalty shot round against Spain in the quarterfinals. It would also mark the end of Donadoni’s short-lived stay at the helm.
Confederations Cup disaster 2009 The Confederations Cup in the summer of 2009 was, by all accounts, a tournament to forget. Culminating with a 3-0 manhandling at the hands of Brazil, the 1-0 loss to Egypt was arguably the lowest the Azzurri have sank since losing to South Korea in 2002. The team seemed like an old, unfit, and uninspired shell of the World Cup winners of three years prior. Marcello Lippi’s men left a lot to be desired for the following summer.
Qualification run 08-09 While la squadra azzurra was unbeaten in all 12 qualification games, true to form, most of them were hard-fought and nearagonizing displays. Despite the lack of proven opposition in their group (Republic of Ireland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, etc), the national side rarely controlled matches in convincing fashion, yet managed to forge enough points to qualify at the top of their group for a 17th World Cup appearance. The journey to South Africa was also notably marked by Coach Lippi’s omission of famed trequartista Antonio Cassano. The Sampdoria man’s controversial and seemingly irrational absence from la nazionale has been and remains the object of great debate throughout Lippi’s tenure. v

Two athletes celebrate victory by stretching up towards the heavens to receive the world. This was the vision Silvio Gazzaniga had nearly four decades ago when he entered FIFA’s competition to create a replacement to the original Jules Rimet trophy, won by the Brazilian National Team in the 1970 World Cup final at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. n April 5, 1971, a FIFA committee selected Gazzaniga’s design out of 50 submissions from seven nations, as the replacement to the original FIFA World Cup. Gazzaniga, born in January 1921, in Milan, is a graduate of the Brera Academy, and was working at the Stabilimento Artistico Bertoni when he created the design for the soccer world championship trophy. Bertoni Srl was founded in 1944 by Dr. Eugenio Losa and by Emilio Bertoni. Dr. Giorgio Losa, son of Eugenio, joined the company in 1975 and is presently the owner and director of the company which created the World Cup Trophy. Dr. Losa was a student when he first accompanied his father, Eugenio, to FIFA headquarters in Zurich in 1972 to submit the model of the newly designed trophy. Nearly four decades later, Dr. Losa can attest to the exponential increase in the popularity of the cup. “In the past, we would only hear of the cup during the period of the world championships,” recalls Losa. “Over the past 15 years, and since the rise of the internet, the trophy has become a well known symbol, even outside of sporting circles.” The iconic trophy is 36 centimetres high, made of solid 18 carat gold and weighs 13.6 pounds. The base contains two layers of semi-precious malachite, while the bottom of the trophy bears the engraved year and name of each winning nation since 1974. The winning team is awarded a gold-plated replica rather than the solid gold original. This trophy, as opposed to the original Jules Rimet Cup, cannot be won outright by any nation. Losa describes one of the initial concepts as having a half soccer ball, half globe atop the trophy. Such a concept was disregarded because it would have been difficult to know which half to include. In the final mock-up all continents are visible, thus giving true meaning to the term, World Cup. “The difference between this trophy and other artifacts, say the UEFA Champions’ League trophy is this: the Champions’ League trophy is beautiful, but it is anonymous. It can belong to any sport. The FIFA World Cup was designed specifically for soccer,” states Losa. Over the years, this trophy has become a symbolic representation not only of sportsmanship, but of peace, hope, and unity and one of the most recognizable objects in the world, comparable to other masterpieces such as Leonardo da Vinci’s portrait of Mona Lisa. Let us hope that this beautiful object will remain in Italy following the Azzurri’s South African adventure. v

Silvio Gazzaniga PI: Come è arrivato a concepire il disegno della Coppa Mondiale di Calcio? SG : Io sono proprio nel campo dell’ideazione dei trofei sportivi. Avevo già studiato molte coppe e trofei importanti. Quando hanno fatto questo concorso ho partecipato con tre bozzetti, due disegni, e una fotografia della coppa che poi è stata scelta. Essendo una coppa particolarmente classica e scultorea, il disegno non poteva dare un’impressione totale, occorreva dare un’ idea parziale. L’hanno scelta fortunatamente, e inteligentemente, perché allora era una coppa abbastanza rivoluzionaria, e ci voleva anche coraggio a non prendere le solite coppe, che sono anche belle, però sono decorative di stile ottocentesco. Noi eravamo nel Novecento, bisognava fare qualcosa di novecentesco! PI : Quanto tempo c’è voluto per concepire questo disegno? SG : Come spesso accade, tutte le idee vengono abbastanza rapidamente; poi bisogna elaborarle, equilibrarle. Comunque, bisogna sapere interpretare le esigenze di quel che si vuol fare ed esprimerlo. La mia idea era di fare un trofeo dinamico, perché lo sport è d i n a m i s m o. Po i d o v e va rappresentare qualcosa di potente, appunto di non molto definito, perché definendo troppo si scade nella staticità. É nata una roba abbastanza spontanea e fresca! PI : Mi spieghi l’uso dei materiali usati. Il trofeo è fatto principalmente d’oro e di malachite, vero? SG : L’oro è fuso a cera persa. Ho usato il malachite, primo perché è verde come i campi di calcio e secondo è una materia dura e abbastanza preziosa. Non è come le gemme, ma il malachite è una pietra dura e si può lucidare bene. Poi dà anche con un buon impatto visivo, perché quel verde così vibrante con l’oro ci sta benissimo. Artwork by Gianni Berretta
PI : Si ricorda dov’era alla fine della finale del ’74, quando Franz Beckenbauer fu il primo calciatore a sollevare la Sua coppa? SG : Durante l’ultima partita, stavo in giro e mi dirigevo verso Milano in macchina; ne approfittavo perché c’era poca gente in giro. Quando sono arrivato a Milano c’era un tripudio di gente che esultava per la partita. Quella è stata la prima impressione, molto bella. PI : Deve aver provato un’ emozione abbastanza particolare, vero? SG : E beh, sì! Perché quando si fanno delle opere è un pò come fare dei figli. Poi le si dimentica un pò, perché si lavora parecchio... Quando le si rivede si prova sempre una grande emozione. PI : A Suo avviso, la coppa mondiale di calcio rimarrà in Italia? SG : No, non credo che la squadra arruzza sia al top quest’anno. La vincerà qualcun’altro, perché obbietivamente ci sono altre squadre molto valide. E poi adesso anche gli Africani hanno dei giocatori molto abili. PI : Può fare un paragone tra la vecchia Coppa Rimet, e quella che Lei ha disegnata? SG : Io trovo che era molto bella anche la Coppa Rimet, solo che rispecchiava, come ho accennato prima, l’Ottocento, era più decorativa. La mia è abbastanza dinamica, e credo che sia il suo pregio. Speriamo che vinca l’Italia, però so che è dura questo anno. PI : Speriamo di si, non si sa mai! SG : Non si sa mai, c’è sempre... in Italia, dicono, uno stellone che nei periodi di difficoltà riesce a proteggere l’Italia. v

After having missed out on last year’s event, Formula One and Montrealers will renew their love-hate relationship from June 11 to June 13. are numerous events that take place during Grand Prix Week and if you want to Tthehere attend all of them, I suggest that you get a good pair of roller blades to go from one to other because of the sheer quantity of festivities. First of all, you’d think it’s all about cars, right? Well, it’s more than just that; it’s about a lifestyle... of the rich and famous and even if it is for just one week, it makes us all feel good to delve in this world for a brief period of time. However the F1 weekend is mostly a highglitz affair for the tifosi (passionate ones) as well as an attraction for those who are curious about all that revolves around what is normally referred to as the F1 Circus.
Downtown Crescent Street is closed for a series of events and activities from June 10 to June 12. Outdoor concerts, free arcade games and a celebrity pit stop competition where wellknown Montreal media personalities can test their pit-lane skills are all on the menu! There are even art galleries and exhibits devoted to the world of racing. Arturo Rotondo, a wellknown Montreal, artist will be showing his works of art which include canvases and helmet designs. For car aficionados, Peel Street usually reserves several nights devoted to exotic car makers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Aston Martin, and Porsche, among others.

The Quebec Chapter of the Ferrari Club of America was founded shortly following the opening of the Ferrari Quebec dealership in 2000. Montreal is also host to the exclusive Open Pits Day where fans and the curious alike, get to go through pit lanes at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve for free. They can get a closer look at the final preparations that teams have to go through. If you happen to be at the right place at the right time, you can also get a glimpse of drivers who are either in the pits with their teams for a final seat-fitting or on the track checking out for the slightest bump in the asphalt. Open Pits will be held on the Thursday morning before race weekend.
The Race Last but not least, there’s the race itself. Since all three days have quickly sold out in past years, it’s advisable to get your tickets well in advance. Over 300,000 people participate during the course of one weekend. There is nothing that compares to being live on the site, to hear and see what these marvels of engineering can do. If you do attend the race, be sure to stand close to a fast sector of the track just so you can feel the air vibrate and penetrate your entire body as the cars streak by at surreal speeds. (Be sure to protect your ears with ear plugs. The noise can make your eardrums vibrate!) Another must is to watch the cars at either the East hairpin or at the western Senna curve hairpin where the cars go from speeds of over 300km/h to barely 50 km/h in just over 50 meters and then re-accelerate to get out of sight in a matter of seconds!
Support Races Apart from Formula One, there are support events which take place on Friday and Saturday such as the Ferrari Challenge, a gentleman’s race which is always quite exciting. The Formula 1600’s are also back and so are the Grand Prix Legends which include vintage Formula One cars that were bought by passionate collectors. These collectors actually race the cars themselves and it isn’t just a few parade laps. These guys are just as passionate as the F1 drivers, so you can expect lots of action! v
Scalia, a long-time Ferrari owner and passionS2008.ateam Scalia tifoso, was named president of the club in was convinced to volunteer as President because he had been participating in the club since its origin. “We had many interesting events and it was a pleasure to share our passion for the brand together. I felt that I could lead the club and continue the many great events that we had,” says Scalia. Bernardo Pisarzewski, a long-time vintage car collector and proud owner of a Ferrari 308, is the events director and webmaster for the club. He is tasked with organizing monthly events from early March, till the chilly autumn days of October. The events are a mix of social gatherings, Grand Prix viewings, fun runs, and charity events. The club’s signature events include: the annual Grand Prix party, and the Ferrari Dream Drive, a charity run benefiting the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. “The dream drive is the signature event. Last year we were overwhelmed... it’s even overwhelming for the kids; the noise, the cars, they are
always excited,” exclaims Pisarzewski. “It’s our way of giving back.” According to Scalia, the most important benefit of the membership is the ability for the members to share their passion for Ferrari with other enthusiasts and make some friends. “Ferrari is a symbol of excellence. It is the highest performance attainable through engineering and art. It is beauty. It is refined elegance. It is the highest quality components known to man. For many Italians, it is success. Most Italians dream of owning a Ferrari since they are children... it is legendary,” claims the chapter President. “Also Ferrari has been consistently racing since it was created. I feel passion and enthusiasm for Ferrari more than any other auto maker. Maybe it is the racing feel of the vehicle with its unique sound and precise performance. It is an exhilerating experience to drive one.”

La F1 de retour dans la Petite Italie La folie du Grand Grix est de retour à Montréal et la Société de développement commercial (SDC) Petite-Italie - Marché Jean-Talon se prépare encore une fois cette année à célébrer la F1 pendant tout un weekend, du vendredi au dimanche 11, 12 et 13 juin prochain, sur le boulevard St-Laurent entre St-Zotique et Jean-Talon. Pour l’occasion, le cœur de la petite Italie se transformera en foire piétonne où se déroulera une série d’activités pour toute la famille, les amateurs de voitures de course ou les simples curieux. es festivités extérieures s’échelonneront pendant tout le week-end. Les visiteurs pourront se promener et visiter les différents kiosques des marchands de la Piccola Italia ou se détendre sur une des nombreuses terrasses du boulevard St-Laurent spécialement aménagés pour l’occasion. Plusieurs amuseurs publics seront aussi présents pour le plaisir des tous petits et des plus grands. Une exposition de voitures sports, certaines même directement venues d’Europe, présentera plusieurs modèles de Ferrari, la collection privée de voitures Lamborghini de John Scotti, des Alfa Romeo, plusieurs «muscle cars » américaines modifiées, ainsi que divers modèles Ducati, Fiat, Lancia et Vespa. Les vendredi et samedi soirs proposeront une atmosphère enflammée avec DJ et animateurs pour stimuler la foule. Finalement, un circuit de Go-Kart pour tous les âges sera aussi installé sur le site entre les rues Shamrock et Jean-Talon. Lors du dernier Grand Prix de 2008, plus de 200 000 personnes avaient assisté aux célébrations de la F1 dans la Petite Italie. Pour cette édition 2010, la SDC Petite-Italie - Marché Jean-Talon s’associera avec la fondation Fais-un-voeu, dont la mission consiste à accorder un souhait à des enfants souffrant de maladies chroniques. Une partie des profits générés par les courses de Go-Kart sera ainsi remise à la fondation. Le circuit sera ouvert pour des courses corporatives et pour le grand public. La SDC Petite-Italie - Marché Jean-Talon est un organisme à but non lucratif qui rassemble plus de 235 membres. Sa mission est d’organiser plusieurs activités visant à promouvoir l’ensemble des marchands sur son territoire dans le but d’accroître leur attrait commercial. Entré en fonction en 2010, le comité officiel de la SDC recherche activement des partenaires d’affaires. A Street Party of Olympic Proportions By Anna Foschi Ciampolini, Vancouver correspondent
No one really knows what made the difference and prompted the start of the “red tide”, the avalanche of flag-waving, redclad people invading the streets of downtown Vancouver to cheer and party till dawn with unprecedented gusto. ancouver, until recently an ambitious upstart, a newcomer still striving to achieve worldclass status, perpetually confronting its own insecurities, harboured mixed feelings towards the Olympics, ranging from lukewarm support to vocal hostility. Moreover, the Olympics started with multiple sputters; the most tragic was the death of the Georgian luger during a training run on the Whistler Mountain track, a shocking event that unleashed negative comments and condemnation from the international press and marked the Opening Ceremony with a note of sadness. For a few days, the city, drenched in rain, sort of floated between a growing sense of excitement and the paralyzing fear of a colossal fiasco.Then, on the first Olympic Sunday, the sun shone on a brilliant blue sky and people took to the streets: families, babies in strollers, the elderly, bluecollars and professionals, but most of all throngs of youth with their boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm. They were laughing, yelling, cheering the visitors, waiting patiently in the endless line-ups to the attractions. They were dangling on a rope, riding the popular zip-line and the city suddenly came alive with an infusion of joyfulness and enthusiasm, rather unusual for the relaxed, almost sleepy atmosphere of a place known as Lotus Land. That Sunday, freestyle skier Alexandre Bilodeau vaulted to Olympic glory with a perfect double-full and a back-iron cross that brought the first gold medal to Team Canada. Maybe it was during that defining moment that the Great Vancouver Party began. More and more people kept coming from all four corners filling up the streets till dawn, dancing, improvising conga lines and singing impromptu renditions of the national anthem, all fuelled by enthusiasm and yes, rivers of beer and generous smokes of the infamous BC bud, but miraculously without violence or major incidents. The crowd basked in the pride of seeing Canada bring home gold medal after gold medal and the most coveted of all, the gold in the men’s hockey final game. The elated mood on the last evening of the games took on almost a magical quality.

It was a magnificent madness, a carnival of fools. We felt part of the world family and we felt like brothers in Canada, with a renewed sense of pride and national identity. Immigrants were cheering maybe even more loudly than generation-old Canadians. In a kaleidoscope of faces and races we, the immigrants, embraced the Maple Leaf as the symbol of the country that has embraced us. In the suburbs, the excitement was more subdued, nevertheless Canadian flags were everywhere and tourists were spotted shopping in the suburban malls. In Burnaby, one day, in the near empty parking lot behind a gas station where I parked my car, I saw a little girl running back and forth in an effort to break her personal speed record, while her father timed her with a stopwatch and shouted encouragements. It was a late afternoon, the luminosity in the sky was softened by the golden and pinkish hues of the coming sunset and I was going home from work. I stopped by for a few minutes, smiling at the blond little girl who kept yelling, “I can do better! I can do better!” after every attempt at dashing faster and faster. Of the many images captured on cameras and broadcasted on television, the one that captivated me the most was the chronicling of a minor episode. On the first training day of the Olympics in Whistler Mountain, a lynx appeared out of nowhere and crossed the ski tracks. It was a magnificent animal, a solitary predator which moved with deadly grace on the white snow. The lynx stopped for a moment in front of a giant Vancouver 2010 billboard, then jumped over it and disappeared into the woods. That postcard-perfect, iconic image was a true, powerful symbol of the untamed Canadian wilderness, an expression of the awesome power of nature that will endure long after the party ended and the Olympic Torch was extinguished. v

Donne Briganti Nel Mondo Per La Pace: Fallaci’s image, a controversial symbol at the inaugural event on March 7 By Elvira Truglia
It’s hard to get past the name “Donne Brigante Nel Mondo Per la Pace” (DB), a new group that held its inaugural event on the eve of International Women’s Day (March 7). So what’s in a name? To begin with, brigante or “bandit” recalls Italy’s period of “brigantaggio” - a 19th Century peasant movement that sprung up in Southern Italy after Giuseppe Garibaldi’s “Spedizione dei Mille” in 1860. The conquest that annexed the Kingdom of Two Sicilies to the newly formed Kingdom of Italy marked a major step in Italian unification but was also feared to bring more social and economic injustice in the impoverished South. Donne Briganti - add women and bandits together and the name becomes even more provocative - how can women “bandits” join globally for peace? ounded by Enza Martuccelli, Director of Community Relations for the Canadian Jewish Congress, DB was formed officially in September 2009 in the wake of a string of unfavourable media reports linking Italians to corruption, violence and organized crime (construction scandal, vandalism attacks on Italian cafés, a mafia boss funeral). The flame was fuelled at year-end with a controversial satirical skit on Tout le monde en parle, a popular variety show broadcast on Radio-Canada. With the sentiment that enough is enough, Martuccelli’s response was that women’s voices need to be heard, using positive role models to counter negative stereotypes and “ignorance about who we are as a community”. She rallied other women to join her cause. To date, the core group is made up of five board of directors, including Martuccelli: Giovanna Giancaspro, Carmela Mignacca, Connie Guzzo McParland, Daniela Caputo. Each carries the title “Brigantessa Dirigente” and corresponding portfolio. Two other key members include Kcrystel Kwomo, a Cameroun-Canadian and “honorary brigante”, and Jennifer Giaccari, the youth torch-bearer. For this group, “brigante” is used to evoke the concept of folk hero or “freedom fighter” not “armed bandit”- a distinction that may escape some people. To counter the perception of “lawlessness”, DB added “per la pace” to its name. Why spend so much time on titles? Well, because for this group, image is important. While DB does want to send a message that “it’s not cool to glorify the mafia”, it will not be spending time directly protesting against negative stereotypes (as did the Canadian Italian Professional Business Association (CIBPA), for example, when requesting an apology from Radio-Canada for the sketch that caricatured the barely literate and corrupt “Jamboni” construction family). Similarly, Martuccelli says that it’s also not part of the group’s mandate to take on social issues such as elder abuse, violence against women, and alcoholism. These are all issues that exist within the community but “in great measure there are groups that address these things”, says Martuccelli. Instead, the group wants to focus on mentorship, education and outreach. On paper, DB wants to bring attention to role models such as the Italian-American Saint Francesca Cabrini; Italian-Canadian Grace Bagnato, the first woman to be appointed as court interpreter; Angela Bambace, an Italian-American woman who organized the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union (ILGWU), among others. “We jumped social classes in one generation, we owe it to those who came after us to take what we did right and share our experiences,” says Martuccelli. Experiences that reflect adaptability, perseverance and success in every field (science, the arts, politics, education not just economics). Connie McParland, newly minted co-publisher of Guernica Editions, joined the group to give more visibility to Italian-Canadian writers. She says that the community has largely focused on validating economic success. However, “it’s the writers who will (literally) leave their mark.” Indeed words and symbols do make a difference, which is why it was disconcerting to witness many people at the March 7 event flippantly throw the word “brigante” around like a newly acquired Gucci bag. Words that have been chosen because they symbolize “political

resistance” and “subversion” are presumably not intended to infer, yet again, “una bella figura” - to display that we’re keeping up with the Joneses, the Dions and not the “Gumbas”. I may be less weary of this lack of self-awareness and chalk up the indulgent behaviour to over-enthusiasm... if it were not for the lack of attention paid to at least one other thing. The DB buffet lunch invitation (electronic and print version) included headshots of seven women across the Italian diaspora that are suggested to embody the qualities of “perseverance, integration and success”. Keeping in mind the mission of the group to be inclusive and reach out to “immigrant women of all backgrounds and ethnic origins”, it seems ironic that DB has chosen the Florentine-born Oriana Fallaci (1929-2006) as one of its role models. Fallaci was a famous Italian journalist and writer who made controversial statements on Islam and European Muslims, which were applauded by some but criticized by many for being irresponsible and racist. In works like La Rabbia e l’Orgoglio (The Rage and Pride, 2002) and La Forza della Ragione (The Force of Reason, 2005) she expressed hostile critique of Islam and the desire of Muslims to follow their own cultural practices in the predominantly Christian West. Fallaci also compared a gathering of social activists at the 2002 European Social Forum to the Nazi occupation of Florence. This was the Forum that culminated with one million people marching peacefully against the Iraq war. Isn’t Fallaci the kind of role model that, by their own definition, the Donne Briganti should be standing against? I want to believe. I do. And maybe, if the group demonstrates a greater standard of care in choosing their words, and their images, I will. v

ricette - recettes - recepies Spaghetti aux moules épicées Spaghetti alle cozze e peperoncino Dans une grande poêle à frire, faites sauter les oignons, l’ail et le piment fort dans l’huile d’olive à feu élevé. Ajoutez les moules, les tomates, le persil, le vin et le beurre, puis assaisonnez au goût. Couvrez et laissez cuire jusqu’à ce que les moules s’ouvrent. Jetez les moules qui ne s’ouvrent pas. Dans une autre casserole, faites cuire les spaghettis pendant 8 minutes ou jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient très al dente. Égouttez, puis mélangez les pâtes aux moules. Laissez mijoter 3 minutes supplémentaires pour amalgamer les saveurs.

Placez, dans l’ordre, les champignons, le mélange de chicorée et le fromage de chèvre. Répétez les étapes et terminez avec les champignons.

«La difficulté n’est pas de comprendre les idées nouvelles, mais d’échapper aux idées anciennes.» C’est avec cette citation de John Mayard Keynes que le Professeur Attilio Scienza, agronome de renommée internationale et spécialiste en viticulture, a terminé un exposé captivant sur la viticulture sicilienne, en présence des membres de Assovini Sicilia, une association des plus influents producteurs vinicoles siciliens, réunis dans le but de promouvoir la viticulture de cette importante région. a Sicile produit en moyenne 7 millions d’hectolitres de vin par année, plus du double de la Lhectares production de régions comme le Piémont et la Toscane. En fait, la Sicile, avec ses 120000 de vignes, produit autant de vin que le Chili! Toutefois, seulement 4% de la production totale sicilienne est composée de vins de dénomination DOC ou DOCG (contre une moyenne de 32% pour le reste de l’Italie.) Environ trois quarts de la production de cette grande île est commercialisée en vins IGT (Indication géographique typique) ou VDT (vin de table) et un effarant 19% de la production (selon des chiffres de 2008) est composé de moût de vin (comparé à une moyenne de 1% pour le reste de l’Italie.) Une situation qui ne fait rien pour valoriser l’énorme diversité du territoire sicilien, un territoire riche en histoire et en tradition, qui a été le point de rencontre et de métissage des plus grandes cultures méditerranéennes pendant des siècles. Or, la valorisation de cette richesse géographique et culturelle pourrait être ultérieurement compromise par la création d’une DOC unique, qui engloberait la majorité de la production sicilienne sous une dénomination aussi vague et peu signifiante que Sicilia DOC. Demandez-vous s’il est concevable qu’un producteur bourguignon accepte d’embouteiller sa production sous l’AOC Bourgogne Pinot noir par crainte que les consommateurs à l’étranger ne saisissent pas la différence entre Gevrey Chambertin et Chambolle Musigny. Non, ça n’arriverait jamais! Mais j’imagine que c’est inutile de perdre trop de temps sur la valorisation du territoire quand vous avez des centaines de milliers d’hectolitres de nero d’avola à écouler. Et tant pis si une dénomination commune ne fait rien pour souligner l’énorme diversité qui existe entre des situations uniques comme celle de Benanti, où l’on produit des vins de grand caractère, issus des cépages nerello mascalese et nerello cappuccio, sur les sols volcaniques de l’Etna, à des altimétries qui peuvent atteindre les 850 mètres et des situations comme celle de Cantine Barbera, où la courageuse et dynamique jeune femme qu’est Marilena Barbera s’obstine à embouteiller ses meilleurs vins sous la dénomination Menfi DOC, en essayant de valoriser une zone où la proximité de la mer donne aux vins une minéralité presque saline.
La Sicile est une réalité viticole complexe et incroyablement diversifiée, avec des centaines de cépages autochtones différents qui font en sorte que cette région est une des seules au monde dans laquelle plus de trois mois peuvent s’écouler entre les vendanges des variétés précoces, habituellement ramassées au mois d’août et celles des variétés tardives, qui peuvent parfois être ramassées au mois de novembre. Aussi, il faut souligner que, grâce à ses liens historiques avec la France, certains cépages internationaux tels que le chardonnay et le cabernet sauvignon étaient déjà connus en Sicile au 18e siècle, anticipant ainsi de plus de cent ans leur arrivée dans le reste de la péninsule italienne et permettant aux viticulteurs locaux d’apprivoiser ces variétés et les utiliser pour se mesurer avec les meilleures viticultures étrangères. Il ne faut donc pas s’étonner qu’une maison comme Planeta produise un vin comme le Burdese, un assemblage de cabernet sauvignon et cabernet franc qui est parmi les plus élégants qu’on puisse trouver à ces latitudes. Et si vous avez encore des doutes sur la qualité de la viticulture sicilienne et son potentiel de produire des grands vins, capables de garder leur typicité dans le temps, il vous aurait fallu goûter le chardonnay 1996 que j’ai eu le privilège de déguster avec Alessio Planeta. Âgé de 14 ans, ce chardonnay ne montre toujours aucun signe de fatigue et il donnerait une grande leçon à bien des chardonnays californiens. Et dire qu’il ne s’agissait que de son deuxième millésime. En goûtant à l’excellent 2008, on ne peut qu’arriver à la conclusion que la maison Planeta possède encore aujourd’hui une très grande familiarité avec le chardonnay. Abandonner les vieilles idées pour en épouser des nouvelles. Tout cela est bien philosophique et quand on gère une entreprise il faut souvent se plier à des exigences économiques qui ne font pas toujours bon ménage avec les grands idéaux. Il faut donc espérer que la synergie entre les producteurs réunis sous la bannière Assovini crée des conditions qui puissent permettre à la viticulture sicilienne de prospérer tout en préservant et en valorisant la grande richesse de cette île aux mille beautés.

Très frais, assez net, offrant des arômes fruités mûrs et de poivre noir. La bouche est ample, veloutée, de belles dimensions, avec des saveurs de fruits rouges, mûrs, légèrement chocolatés, des tannins finement astringents et une belle harmonie d’ensemble. Étonnamment réussi pour un vin qui est produit à 1,5 millions de bouteilles! v
Le Serra della Contessa 2004, qui sera disponible à la SAQ dans les prochains mois, possède un superbe nez, vif, fumé, avec des arômes de sous-bois, de champignon, de cerise mûre et de bois raffinés. La bouche est pleine, d’une belle acidité, lui conférant du nerf et beaucoup de vitalité, une trame tannique serrée, assez ferme mais noble, des saveurs de cerise, d’épices et une subtile minéralité qui persiste. Un vin original, parmi les plus complets et authentiques que la Sicile a à offrir!
Vin offrant une explosion d’arômes très caractéristiques, allant du floral au minéral, avec des nuances de violette et de réglisse, une abondante dose de fruits rouges bien mûrs, ainsi qu’un caractère subtilement végétal, évoquant par moments le plant de tomate. La bouche est pleine, ample, veloutée et vibrante d’énergie, avec des saveurs de fruit noir, d’épices, de cola, de prune, d’excellente concentration, aboutissant en une longue finale de mûres et de chocolat. Du 13 au 15 mars s’est déroulé à la Stazione Leopolda de Florence, gare de train du 18 e splendidement récupérée, la 5e édition de Taste, le salon dédié à l’excellence alimentaire italienne.

L’espace d’exposition au décor hautement coloré a accueilli 200 producteurs eno-gastronomiques de niche. 10 000 visiteurs enthousiastes se sont donné rendezvous pour déguster et se procurer ce que l’Italie fait de mieux en matière de produits alimentaires : succulents prosciutti et saucissons, fromages typiques, gâteaux traditionnels ou innovateurs, bières artisanales et vins autochtones, tous bons, même excellents et bien présentés. Ce salon si particulier a su mettre en valeur la nourriture et les vins grâce à une présentation exceptionnelle. Le mérite en revient au duo Pitti-Paolini qui a su présenter de façon créative et esthétique, les richesses gastronomiques du Bel Paese. Putting It in the Bag By Loretta Di Vita I like the way it feels. I think about it all the time. When it’s about to end, I’m already imagining the next time. I’m talking about shopping. I like shopping. No, wait I love shopping. I even like the way the word “shopping” rolls off the tongue. There’s the soft, shloppy sound of the starting consonants and vowel, followed by the peppy double p’s, topped off by the matter-of-fact cadence of the “ing”, making it sound like a bona fide action word - something to do. Call me frivolous. Call me self-indulgent. I don’t care. I can see the practical types out there, rolling their eyes in indignation, calling shopping the exemplary non-activity. Maybe, to some extent, they’re right. I admit there’ve been shopping experiences that have left even moi bored, but such ennui is only limited to practical shopping outings like buying postage stamps or stocking up on home-use paper products in big-bulk quantities. As mundane as some forms of shopping can be, there are key purchases that I sweetly retain in my memory and revisit like a favourite photograph in a cherished album. So what if a coveted item comes off an impersonal massproduction assembly line; if it resonates with my inner shopper - the part of me that wants and needs it (and refuses to see the difference between the two impulses) - that’s all that counts. On an emotional level, shopping can be an existential affirmation, where I feel like the architect of my own dreams, imagining objects that will bring a ray of sunshine to my to-buy excursions. I enter stores with anticipation and think: If only I could find among this far-reaching sea of consumerist temptation and surplus that defining item

It can also be an intellectual exercise: one where factors such as value, quality, longevity, and possibly even potential for resale (eBay?) must be weighed and balanced with the deftness of a futures analyst. I feel an unbearable lightness after finding something I want to buy. Most shopping devotees will tell you that this euphoria is not commensurate with an exorbitant sales sticker. What matters is the giddy feelgoodness that follows after ringing up the right choice. Some of my best buys have been made without any preconceived notion of value. I remember scouring an outdoor market in Rome with my husband (who detests aimless shopping) and spotting a sassy satchel dangling from the canvas ceiling of a sales tent. Shifting from side to side in the cypress-infused breeze, it lulled me into a hypnotic state of desire. Bearing no price tag, it begged to be haggled over. A hybrid more than a knockoff, it mildly resembled a de rigueur designer piece. Smug enough to have its own personality, it was clearly not so precious as to demand a lofty hand-out. Naturally, I bowed to its persuasiveness and bought it. Just for the record: I’d never buy a counterfeit impersonating the real McCoy down to its last inner-seam stitch. Not only because it’s illegal, but also since fakes, by character and definition, lack authenticity - a critical quality that anything worth buying must have. Scoring a bargain (especially off-season) is a buying skill that separates the champs from the lightweights. While less-experienced mall rats are sniffing out the hottest raffia wedge sandals, this proactive shopper zeros in on coldweather gloves heaped on a liquidation table, knowing that it’s the opportune time to cop the buttery-softest pair at the most inviting wallet-friendly price. Sifting and sorting through a colossal mountain of gloves, the perfect duo surfaces - one exquisite kidskin finger at a time - and a calm wave of fulfillment escorts me all the way to the cash register. Cha-ching! In case you’ve formed the wrong impression, my passion for acquiring has nothing to do with greed or status. It’s all about the primal thrill of the hunt. In fact, this viscer-

Alfa Romeo Centennial Art Collection By Joey Franco
Its design is unmistakable- the legendary radiator grill, the Visconti snake emblem, the sleek contours. As much as Alfa Romeos have become jewels of design, many of these vehicles have pioneered various technological innovations over the past century. June 24 will mark the centenary of one of the most esteemed Italian automakers: Alfa Romeo. n 1906, the Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) was founded by French automobile manufacturer Alexandre Darracq and Italian investor Ugo Stella. The company relocated to a larger, more suitable tract of land in the Milan suburb of Portello and assumed the moniker A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili). It wasn’t until 1915 that the company came under the direction of Neapolitan entrepreneur Nicola Romeo, thus changing the company’s name accordingly. Alfa Romeo, although not known in modern times as a racing outfit, holds a special place in Formula One history, winning both the first ever Grand Prix, held in Silverstone, and the inaugural 1950 Formula One World Championship. Nino Farina’s 1950 F1 championship triumph in an Alfa was replicated when his Alfa teammate Juan Manuel Fangio captured the title in 1951. Despite never winning another race in the upper echelon of motorsport after the 1951 season, Alfa is considered one of the most successful Italian race teams in the first half of the 20th century. Alfa Corse has excelled in several competitions, earning the team four consecutive 24 Hours of Le Mans victories beginning in 1931, and 11 Mille Miglia wins. The front grill is Alfa’s striking feature, its signature piece which sets the standard for the design of every car. It was originally designed by Giuseppe Merosi, and has since become an automotive icon. Altough the grill does vary in shape and size, Merosi’s concept appears in every Alfa vehicle produced. Many design firms such as Pininfarina, Bertone, Italdesign, and Zagato have honoured Merosi’s grill while creating their own distinct look. Alfa Romeo celebrates a century of passion, innovation and automotive excellence by launching its Fine Art Prints Collection. One hundred international artists and illustrators have created 100 memorable prints that illustrate the link between car design and aesthetics. I know a lot of people from my generation that don’t live in Italy anymore. Not because of work, but because they wanted to live other experiences outside of Italy. Nowadays the situation is rather confusing and it has become more and more similar to what was happening before, because there is no work in Italy. In Italy, you are not entitled to anything if you don’t earn it. Nobody will pay you to live. If you don’t have money it’s your problem, and you will end up in the street. Immigration is slowly starting to look like what it used to be. Yet, instead of having masons and farmers leaving Italy, now you have people that earned university degrees that are moving away. The empty space, the natural free space is fantastic here, but the architecture is not. When I look outside a window in Florence for instance, I see a building from the 15th century to my right, and the cupola of Brunelleschi to my left. There is no possible comparison to make here in Montreal. For me, explaining to an Italian what minus 30 feels like is impossible. When I first got here and it was that cold outside, I dared not even go out. I am absolutely urban. I believe concrete should be poured everywhere I go.
I am 100% urban. If you take me outside my daily smog, I start feeling dizzy and I don’t understand where I am anymore. After two hours in the countryside I feel like a drug addict in rehab, forced to inhale fresh air. I love the city for a very important reason. You can stay at home, but you know that there is always something happening outside. In the countryside, inside or outside, nothing ever happens, and I can’t stand that.

If I see a fly, I start feeling bad. The countryside does not interest me at all. The only place outside of the city that I like to contemplate is the sea. I would completely erase mountains from this world if I could...
Everyday I go to sleep at around 3 or 4 am. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, it does not matter... Obviously I prefer the night over the day. You must have special glasses to see at night. Night is a beautiful space. Night is true. Day is like a little theatre. There are a lot of religions that aim at a specific target, at a finishing point. Normally people get caught up, moving from left to right, up and down, and finally end up getting completely lost, forgetting where they are going. You can live your dreams. You have to be good enough to keep alive the joyfulness that exists in dreams and bring it into reality. It is fundamental to live your dreams. Otherwise life is terrible. Don’t you agree? Art definitely brought humanity a sense of aesthetic. What we define as beautiful or ugly is acquired by sight. A picture that represents reality is another way of looking at reality. If you look at your brother and at your brother’s painting, they are two separate things. Art lets you appreciate life. Artists give you something to talk about. Through a system of vision and knowledge one becomes a better person. I was recently in Amsterdam looking at a beautiful painting in a museum, and a beautiful girl passed by. I had to turn around to look at her. Hence, beauty is what attracts you. I am convinced that art is the only way to overcome death. The concept of family is fundamental. According to me, what is missing in Montreal is the concept of family. Everything is family. Even a gang is a family. The concept of belonging is very important. If you don’t belong to anything, because your father is on one side and your mother on the other you will still grow up, but, you will always be searching for a family. It’s an indispensable feeling of belonging.
Italy has 43 % of the world’s artistic heritage. It has so many beautiful things that it is scary. Not only at the level of museums, but from an architectural standpoint as well. There is so much history that it is hallucinating. Italians are a product. They carry the “made in Italy” sticker on their forehead. The concept of “Italianità” is a product in itself... I worked as a fashion photographer for 16 years. I was always surrounded by beautiful girls and I never became gay. There are a lot of examples of ugly people or ugly actors that are amazing. It is always hard to have a discussion over the beauty of ugliness in abstract terms, because ugliness is always related to something else. There are so many types of beauty in ugliness. Abstract art defines itself in its own terms. It is something abstract that cannot be represented in reality; let’s say a boy or an elephant. For people who have no clue about art, it is something that makes no sense. All art forms are meant to make you feel something. Even poetry will make you feel something in your head which is not necessarily figurative. Talent for an artist is very important. But it all depends on what type of talent we are talking about. Some are amazing at public relations and make other people do their work for them. v

Line Spectr a : Heading in the right direction Eclectic, harmonious, and upbeat - these are just some of the words that describe them. Meet Kathy Perlini, Diana Lalla and Vanessa Morelli. Together they make up the powerful and bubbly trio known as Line Spectra. hey’ve been together for four years, but these talented, strong women have known each other for much longer. Drummer Kathy Perlini and bassist and guitarist, Diana Lalla, have been best friends since they were 5, growing up on the same block in Dorval. They met Vanessa Morelli, the T h e i r a l b u m m i g h t band’s singer and keyboardist in high school where the girls Directions” but this knows exactly where attended Queen of Angels Academy in the West Island. That is where the power trio played in talent shows and discovered their mutual love for music, having all been performing and playing instruments since their childhoods. It was when the women entered college that they decided to take their formation to new heights and Line Spectra was officially launched onto the music scene. First and foremost though, and much to the content of their families, the women, chose to go to university and complete their studies. “That obviously made our parents very happy,” says Vanessa Morelli, “and I think the reason why they are so supportive today is because we finished school and each got a degree.” Since completing their Bachelor degrees, these three young Italian women, who are all 22 years old, have been hard at work, balancing work and promoting their first, full-length album, “Maps & Directions.” The album, which was released last year, and follows their self-titled debut back in 2007, is a testament to their hard work and determination. “We’ve grown up so, so much in the last two years,” Kathy Perlini says, as her other two band members nod in unison. “We wrote the album while we were in university, during a period where we were trying to figure out our lives and our careers,” adds singer Morelli. This period of growth that the women talk about is clearly evident on the album. The album, written and produced by Line Spectra, was recorded and mixed by Joseph Donovan,

who’s worked with another West Islander, Sam Roberts. “A great honour,” the ladies say having had the chance to work with him. “Maps & Directions” is definitely worth a listen. The songs are upbeat, and a breath of fresh air. The women each excel at playing their instrument, and Morelli shines through as the lead singer. This indie-rock band even brings some Italian spice to their music, incorporating the mandolin and the accordion to some of its songs. The lyrics are mature and the women even dedicate a song to Montreal in a personal favourite, “City Lights,” which is track 4 on the album. “The song is our ‘merci’ to the city, which is why we b e c a l l e d “ M a p s & also recorded a French version,” Diana Lalla reveals. But it’s not every day you meet an all-Italian, Montreal up and coming band native rock band, not to mention made up of three excepit’s going... tionally talented women. While they agree that this does help them stand out from the crowd, it isn’t easy breaking into the competitive music industry. “It is tough,” claims Lalla. “There are so many bands trying to get their name out there, but in another way you can see this as a positive because the city loves music so much.” But the ladies don’t want to be labeled by the fact that they’re a “girl” band. “We just want to be respected,” says Lalla. “No one says ‘look at that all-guy-band’- they just say ‘band’,” adds Perlini. “Eventually, we too, just want to be ‘band.’” For now, this vivacious trio’s focus is on playing as many shows as they can and getting their music out to as many people as possible. “We just want people to like our music and to leave our shows feeling happy,” Perlini says. So what inspired the title of their album, “Maps & Directions?” “We get lost everywhere!” exclaims Perlini. ““Not even a GPS could save us!” However musically, this group isn’t lost at all. Our music is our direction, our map,” stresses Morelli. “We’re not confused about that.” There’s no confusion that Line Spectra is headed in the right direction... and warming the hearts of everyone who comes in their way. L’auteur-compositeur Vinicio Capossela était de passage à Montréal en mars dernier pour présenter son spectacle Solo Show et pour faire la promotion de son dernier album Da Solo. elui qu’on surnomme le Tom Waits italien en était à sa troisième visite dans la métropole où il a livré un concert parfois doux, parfois explosif, mais jamais ennuyant. Sa performance s’est déroulée à l’Astral dans une ambiance feutrée et bon enfant à l’image da sa musique, à cheval entre blues, jazz, grassroots et folkrock débridé. Christopher, un magicien excentrique tatoué de la tête au pied, accompagnait Capossela et sa troupe de bohémiens durant la prestation. Sur scène ou juché sur des échasses, se transformant en ventriloque alcoolique ou en pignata humaine, le prestidigitateur contribuait à donner par ses frasques burlesques une atmosphère de freak show au spectacle. La mise en scène du Solo Show évoquait ainsi l’univers créatif de Capossela qui explore abondamment l’imaginaire et le fantastique dans sa musique. Grand amateur de Fellini, c’est un peu en hommage à ce grand homme du cinéma que le spectacle est né. L’univers du cirque au cœur du film La Strada fascine Capossela, aussi influencé par la musique de Nino Rota, compositeur des trames sonores des films de Fellini. Les paroles de Capossela qui écrit souvent ses chansons comme s’il s’agissait de petites histoires, sont très imagées et se prêtent justement à des mises en scène théâtrales. La beauté du théâtre révèle-t-il « c’est qu’on peut le faire avec peu de moyen. Mes chansons sont facilement transposables sur scène. C’est un aspect sur lequel je travaille beaucoup. Je cherche à donner un spectacle, pas uniquement un concert. » Capossela a aussi composé la musique du film

Le monde fantastique de Vinicio Capossela
10 inverni de Valerio Mieli, mais affirme vouloir plutôt mettre des films dans ses chansons que de faire des musiques de film. Présenté par certains tabloïds étrangers comme « la plus grande rock star italienne », Capossela se définit plutôt comme un chansonnier qu’une vedette rock, puisant entre autres son inspiration chez des auteurs-compositeurs comme Luigi Tenco et Renato Zero. En effet, sa musique n’a rien à voir avec celles de Vasco Rossi ou de Negroamaro, les Axel Rose et Simple Plan italiens. Sa musique métissée rappelle les mélodies de Paolo Conte, la poésie de Léo Ferré, l’univers glauque de Tom Waits avec l’énergie de Manu Chao. Capossela se dit aussi très touché par la musique populaire traditionnelle italienne comme les fanfares de village et les rythmes endiablés de la tarantella qu’on retrouve souvent dans ses pièces. Les mots occupent aussi une place importante dans sa musique. « J’entretiens un rapport très ’fantastique’ (fiabesco) avec la musique. C’est toujours une fête pour moi. Mais, le vrai travail consiste toujours à faire ressortir la langue. Et la langue italienne est très forte et possède une musicalité particulière, accessible même en dehors de l’Italie. L’Amérique a un grand sens du spectacle, mais notre culture apporte un côté fantastique en plus. » Amoureux des mots, c’était pour lui une progression toute naturelle que de se mettre à écrire. Son premier roman intitulé In clandestinità : Mr. Pall incontra Mr. Mall, publié en mai 2009, explore à travers la prose et la poésie le difficile chemin de la clandestinité et de l’affranchissement au quotidien, composé de victoires et de défaites. Capossela s’est aussi aventuré dans l’univers de la fable avec “Il Gigante e il Mago”, un conte de Noël qui a été diffusé sur Radio Rai2 le 25 décembre 2009. Le lien qu’il entretient avec l’enfance et le fantastique est également perceptible dans plusieurs de ses chansons comme Il Paradiso dei Calzini, Santa Nicola et Il Gigante e il Mago. Sans doute une façon pour lui de maintenir en vie son cœur d’enfant et de rester sensible au fantastique, voire même de subjuguer son instinct de paternité, lui qui n’a toujours pas d’enfant. Avec Da solo, Capossela présente un album plus mélancolique par rapport à ses albums précédents, laissant transparaître une atmosphère intimiste à la fois triste et réconfortante. « Da Solo est une façon d’affronter les grandes choses de la vie, de me mettre à nu. C’est un disque qui parle de l’essence de l’homme dans une perspective historique, géographique et anthropologique. Je me sers de la musique pour reproduire l’état émotif qui entoure ce dont je souhaite parler », explique Capossela qui ne se sent ni préoccupé ni optimiste quant au monde d’aujourd’hui, mais qui tente tout simplement d’en faire partie. v

Tornano i Baustelle Teresa Romano
A più di due anni dalla pubblicazione del loro ultimo lavoro Amen , “disco d’oro” per le vendite e vincitore della Targa Tenco 2008 come “Album dell’anno”, tornano i Baustelle con un disco di inediti intitolato I mistici dell’Occidente in uscita il 26 marzo. Baustelle sono un gruppo italiano che esiste ormai da quindici anni. Il nome è una parola tedesca che significa “cantiere”, “lavori in corso” e che è stato scelto per come suonava e non per il suo significato. Inoltre, il termine, una volta scisso nelle sue componenti, può dar vita a giochi di parole e suoni: “stelle”, “elle” (“lei” in francese) e vi si può anche ritrovare un onomatopeico “bau”!

La scelta ricercata del loro nome è in un certo senso sintomatica della loro musica: diverse, come sempre, le definizioni e le etichette affibbiate alla band e alla loro musica, sicuramente pop e orecchiabile ma con testi di spessore, ricchi di citazioni non casuali. Un genere musicale che è un particolare miscuglio di influenze diverse, dalla musica d’autore all’elettronica, dalle canzoni degli sessanta e settanta alla new wave, e che ha decretato un buon successo di critica e pubblico fin dal loro album di esordio, Sussidiario Illustrato Della Giovinezza, nel 2000. Da allora, dopo qualche cambio di formazione e di case discografiche, il cantiere dei Baustelle è pronto ad inaugurare un nuovo album, anticipato dal singolo Gli spietati, in rotazione nelle radio dal 12 marzo. Alte le aspettative per questo nuovo album realizzato con il produttore Pat McCarthy, famoso per aver collaborato con i REM, U2 e Madonna. Per quanto ci riguarda, in attesa di ascoltare l’album per intero, possiamo dire che il primo singolo non delude. Gli spietati è in pieno stile Baustelle, nella musica ma soprattutto nel testo, dove le citazioni non mancano, a cominciare dal titolo che non può non farci pensare al film diretto e interpretato da Clint Eastwood del 1992, Unforgiven, per il quale in Italia è stato appunto scelto il titolo de Gli spietati. Anche a livello musicale è possibile ritrovare riferimenti alla storia della musica, in particolare dei Nomadi e di Franco Battiato. Il ricorso alla citazione lo si può ritrovare anche nel videoclip del brano, dove compaiono personaggi più o meno famosi e dove si sprecano le allusioni alle opere di Andy Warhol. L’uscita del disco precede di pochi giorni l’esordio letterario di Francesco Bianconi, voce dei Baustelle. Il 30 marzo viene pubblicato, infatti, il suo primo romanzo, Un romantico a Milano, la storia di un ragazzo di provincia trasferitosi a Milano per lavorare. Viene spontaneo chiedersi se si tratti di un lavoro autobiografico o comunque ispirato alle vicende personali di Bianconi che, nel 2001, si trasferisce nella città della moda per lavorare come giornalista per una rivista di botanica e giardinaggio e successivamente per altri giornali. Nonostante la separazione fisica dal gruppo, che mantiene la sede nel senese, Bianconi rimane un punto fermo del gruppo e, allo stesso tempo, scrive canzoni per diversi artisti, fra cui La cometa di Halley, canzone con la quale Irene Grandi si è presentata al Festival di San Remo di quest’anno. Porta la firma di Francesco Bianconi anche un altro grande successo interpretato da Irene Grandi, Bruci la città, vero e proprio tormentone dell’estate 2007, con il quale la cantante toscana si è aggiudicata il “Premio radio” al Festivalbar dello stesso anno. Irene Grandi non è l’unica interprete femminile del panorama italiano per la quale Bianconi ha scritto pezzi di successo. Ricordiamo Bonnie & Clyde (cover di un brano di Serge Gainsbourg) per Sirya, La mangiatrice di uomini interpretata magistralmente da Fiorella Mannoia e, più recentemente, Per colpa tua inserita nell’ultimo album di Noemi. Solo il tempo potrà dirci se questo ragazzo di Montepulciano, oltre a scrivere e a interpretare belle canzoni, ha un talento anche da romanziere e se la critica e il publico saranno spietati o meno nel giudizo de I mistici dell’Occidente. v

Quando il cinema si impegna : rinascita del documentario italiano Giovanni Princigalli
Dal 27 febbraio al 15 maggio 2010 si svolge al cine teatro Leonardo da Vinci di Montréal, una rassegna sul nuovo documentario italiano e d’impegno civile, organizzata dall’Associazione Professori d’Italiano del Québec. ’idea è venuta a Massimiliano Zanoletti, il segretario dell’associazione, con una forte passione per il cinema italiano. La rassegna sul documentario, tocca con coraggio e Lprofondità tematiche attuali e scottanti. I film sono realizzati in un contesto meno favorevole di quello canadese e francese. In effetti in Italia il mercato, le TV (pubblica e privata) e gli enti pubblici, sono davvero avari nel concedere finanziamenti al nuovo cinema documentario, che fonda se stesso non solo in incontro profondo e diretto con la realtà presente, ma anche con il cinema del passato, per non perdere così il contatto con i grandi maestri. Agostino Ferrente, regista d’origine pugliese, allievo di Olmi nel suo documentario, Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, presente in rassegna, cita De Sica e Pasolini. Il film di Ferrente è quello che ha ricevuto in Italia il maggior successo di pubblico e di critica. Probabilmente perché tocca il tema dell’emigrazione con un messaggio di speranza. Il film infatti non narra di tragedie sociali o di criminalità, ma di come una delle più importanti risorse delle culture emigranti, ossia la musica, riesce a diventare una forma d’integrazione nella società italiana. (così come molti italiani si sono emancipati dalla povertà ed hanno contributo alla crescita culturale

La Cinémathèque Québécoise e l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Montréal, aprono le porte al cinema italiano, con l’omaggio al Festival du Cinéma Italien d’Annecy, diventato ormai un appuntamento annuale ed irrinunciabile per tutti i montrealesi desiderosi di conoscere le produzioni del 2008 e del 2009 che non vengono distribuite oltre oceano. ’evento si è svolto dal 29 aprile al 7 maggio con ben 10 titoli in programma, molti dei quali sono stati presentati in sala dal direttore del festival di Annecy Jean Gili, uno dei Lmaggiori esperti di cinema italiano nel mondo.
Vanno segnalati i seguenti film Giulia non esce la sera di Giuseppe Piccioni, che ha il merito di aver lanciato nei primi anni novanta attori quali Margherita Buy, Silvio Orlando, Sergio Rubini e Giulio Scarpati, con film come i: Il grande Bleck, Chiedi alla luna, Fuori dal mondo, ( scelto per rappresentare l’Italia alla preselezione dei film candidati all’oscar). Con Giulia non esce la sera Piccioni conferma la sua passione per le relazioni uomo-donna, narrate con dolcezza, ironia e profondità. Si avvale di due brillanti attori, Valerio Mastroandrea e Valeria Golino (che ha lavorato anche ad Hollywood al fianco di Dustin Hoffman e Tom Cruise).
degli Stati Uniti d’America, dedicandosi allo sport, alla musica, al cinema). Il film, a tratti ironico e dolce, racconta di come in un quartiere di Roma che sorge attorno a Piazza Vittorio, sempre più abitato da stranieri ed in cui nascono le xenofobie degli italiani, sia possibile invece dar vita ad un progetto importante: un’orchestra multiculturale, composta da musicisti italiani, arabi, indiani, americani, latino americani, senegalesi, ecc, specchio e speranza di una convivenza pacifica. Sempre sul tema dei diritti dei diversi parla il documentario Improvvisamente l’Inverno Scorso di Gustav Hofer e Luca Ragazzi, che non sono solo i registi ma anche i protagonisti del film, che racconta tra pubblico e privato, intimo e sociale, la loro storia, ossia quella di due ragazzi omosessuali che sperano di poter fondare una coppia di fatto, grazie ad un disegno di legge del governo Prodi, passato alla cronaca con la sigla “PACS”. Purtroppo la legge non sarà mai votata dal parlamento italiano. Gli altri due documentari sono di impegno più politico. Il primo è Videocracy di Erik Garidini, ed effettua un viaggio-inchiesta sul potere mediatico di Silvio Berlusconi. Il secondo è Biutiful Cauntry di Esmeralda Calabria, Andrea D’Ambrosio e Peppe Ruggiero. Il titolo è scritto volutamente in modo erroneo ed ironico, ossia in un inglese made in Campania, simbolo di un Bel Paese (l’Italia) al di sotto del quale però sono seppellite 1200 discariche abusive di rifiuti tossici. Un crimine non solo contro l’ambiente, ma anche l’economia e la salute di un’intera regione. Il film non a caso narra anche di alcuni allevatori che assistono impotenti alla morte del proprio bestiame a causa della diossina. Il massacro del territorio è stato possibile, grazie alle complicità tra camorra, politica ed imprese. In sostanza la camorra ricicla il proprio danaro affidandolo a degli imprenditori apparentemente puliti, i quali con la complicità di politici ed amministratori corrotti, costruiscono discariche dove smaltire montagne di rifiuti tossici provenienti dal nord a prezzi ultra vantaggiosi per le imprese settentrionali ma in baffo alle più elementari norme a tutela della salute e dell’ambiente. La prima conseguenza di questo immorale intreccio d’affari è l’aumento vertiginoso dei casi di tumori in Campania. v Per informazioni sulla rassegna contattare: apiq@apiq.org.
Galantuomini di Edoardo Winspeare è incentrato sulla Sacra Corona Unita (il crimine organizzato pugliese salentino). In passato Winspeare ha realizzato film di grande intensità, quali Pizzicata, Sangue Vivo, Il Miracolo recitati in dialetto salentino (eccetto Il miracolo parlato in tarantino), scanditi dalle musiche poetiche e tradizionali di Officina Zoé, e presentati ai festival di San Sebastian, Venezia e Sundance. Winspeare è tra i maggiori talenti del nuovo cinema italiano, ed i suoi film offrono uno sguardo al tempo stesso realistico e poetico sulla Puglia ed il Salento in particolare, questo lembo del Sud tra terra e mare. Pur mostrando un grande amore e rispetto per la sua terra natale, Winspeare non rinuncia alla critica per una società a volte così dura da non lasciare speranze ai suoi figli. Galantuomini ha come temi amore e rabbia, speranza e critica per le forze cheparalizzano la propria terra. La fisica dell’acqua di Felice Farina è prodotto da Renzo Rossellini (il figlio del grande Roberto Rossellini, tra i padri del neorealismo italiano). È interpretato da Claudio Amendola e Paola Cortellesi, ma forse l’attore più abile è un bambino, il protagonista. La storia raccontata da Farina è un viaggio nel mondo reale ed immaginario di un bimbo. Galantuomini è un dramma psicologico dalla messa in scena e il montaggio particolarmente elaborati. La sceneggiatura è firmata da un ex studente della Concordia, Mauro Casiraghi, ed è stato presentato nella passata edizione del Festival des films du monde de Montréal. Fortapàsc di Marco Risi (figlio del grande Dino Risi e che negli anni 90 ha firmato opere d’impegno civile importanti, quali Mary per sempre e Il Muro di gomma), torna alla regia con un film di denuncia sulla camorra con protagonista un giornalista del quotidiano di Napoli Il Mattino che indaga sugli affari tra politica e criminalità organizzata. Da non perdere anche: Tutta colpa di Giuda, commedia musicale di Davide Ferrario sulla passione di Cristo, ed infine La Pivellina di Tizza Covi, la grande sopresa e rivelazione del 2009, una vera chicca, girato con pochissmi soldi, con attori non proefessionisti, in una famiglia e comunità di artisti, giostrai e cercensi italiani. La Pivellina ha raccolto premi in tutto il mondo per la sua incredibile semplicità e fusione riuscita di emotività, realtà quotidiana, sensibilità ed ironia. v SERVICE DE DÉCORATION À DOMICILE ET EN MAGASIN

John Florio: The man who was Shakespeare By Maria Predelli Translated by Maria Barillaro
Lamberto Tassinari, an Italian writer, journalist and essayist living in Canada, presented a revolutionary theory at his conference hosted by the Associazione dei Professori d’Italiano del Quebec (APIQ) on December 9, 2009. He suggested the works of the great William Shakespeare were created not by the small district landowner and theatrical entrepreneur, as has always been believed, but by the great Italian linguist and philosopher, John Florio. a theory were indeed true, it would resolve many Ithefofsuch the puzzling questions that have always surrounded study of Shakespeare’s plays. In fact, there has always been an apparent discrepancy of critical concern among scholars between the biography of Shakespeare, the man as we know him, and the various theories suggesting Shakespeare was merely a man used to conceal the identities of individuals like Sir Francis Bacon, Edward de Vere, Guglielmo Crollalanza, etc. However, none of these supposed theories have managed to receive the unanimous agreement of scholars. But the theory that the author of Shakespearian plays may have actually been John Florio, as presented by Lamberto Tassinari, contains very pertinent arguments and is also scientifically sound. If John Florio truly was the writer behind Shakespeare’s infamous plays, it would solve some disconcerting aspects of the works that have yet to be explained. For example, John Florio came from a Jewish family (originally Spanish Jews who migrated to Italy when Queen Isabella of Spain drove the Jews out of Spain in 1492.) His father, Michelangelo Florio, was deeply committed to his religious order. He was, in fact, a
Franciscan friar before joining the Protestant faith. He then became a preacher and pastor for many years in Soglio, which was then in the Grigioni region in Switzerland. This would explain the profound biblical culture that pervades Shakespearian plays. Another mystery, until this revelation, has always been the extraordinary knowledge of Italian culture found in Shakespeare’s plays. Even if we consider the fact that English culture was opening up during the years of the Italian Renaissance, the writer’s knowledge was still exceptional. The majority of Shakespeare’s plays were based on incidents reported in Italian news and in some plays there are innuendos pointing to very specific locations. Critics have had a great deal of trouble understanding in what way Shakespeare could have come to know those stories and the minute details of them, especially since some of the reports were known to never have been translated into English. The theory that Shakespeare travelled to Italy has never been supported with any concrete evidence and the majority of critics contend that Shakespeare had no knowledge of the Italian language. John Florio, however, was not only raised in an Italian environment, but also had great knowledge of philosophical
mores since he had a PhD in the subject. A man of culture who studied at the University of Tubingen, where he took classes given by Pier Paolo Vergerio, Florio taught Italian in London and at the highest level no less. Important English aristocrats like Queen Anne, learned the language and about Italian culture from him. For a few years, he also taught at Oxford University. It has been confirmed John Florio was one of the most important cultural teachers of his time and was even largely responsible for the Italian style that influenced the Elizabethan era. The extraordinary wealth of Shakespeare’s vocabulary is yet another macroscopic phenomenon. In addition to the rich vocabulary in his work, it is the baroque, flowery and superabundant writing style and the often vaguely odd expressions that seem to be a little displaced. It is almost as if some of the phrases do not flow in the English language, like they were originally thought up in another language. And the works of John Florio are perfectly consistent with the following cultural characteristics: He was of Italian origin yet he completely and consciously integrated British nationalist aristocracy into his own writings and was committed to enriching and explaining British culture in his own works. He was also an exceptionally advanced linguist. This would explain the rich vocabulary and knowledge of both Italian and British cultures. One of his most important works is World of Words (1592), an Italian-English dictionary, the first of its kind in the history of European culture. It was so extensive that his second edition in 1611 exceeded the number of words in the first Vocabolario della Crusca (published in 1612). He also translated several essays by Montaigne into English. This was a milestone in history for the English language. Translation was a brilliant innovation because it brought little understood philosophies to light in the English sphere and enlarged the English vocabulary. In Shakespeare’s plays, traces of Italian literary works have been recognized, works impossible to have been understood by someone who did not have an excellent understanding of Italian literary language. Moreover, whenever expressions, notions or references to other works are made within Shakespeare’s writings, be they Italian or English, they have been found to be works either written by Florio himself or most certainly known to him. For example: the translations of Montaigne, the Basilikon doron (written by James I and translated by Florio), works by Ben Jonson, Giordano Bruno, Ludovico Ariosto, Torquato Tasso, etc. They are all works that Florio knew well enough to make references to. In conclusion, historical, cultural and linguistic evidence render Tassinari’s theory quite plausible. In my opinion, what is more interesting than this revelation is the fact that it destroys the myth that with only the strength of his intuition was Shakespeare able to reach the heights of thought and culture. Shakespearian plays are much more explicable if we acknowledge them as written by an author who was not only brilliant but cultured as well. Brilliance can only bring you so far. To really achieve such literary genius, you need to be cultivated. Arguments in favour of a multicultural Shakespeare are, naturally, in abundance. Il Carnevale in Italia
all’incrocio tra festa popolare, discorso socio-politico e arte Carlotta Morteo
Coriandoli, colori, maschere, musica, spettacoli, sfilate di carri, cibo ed allegria sono gli ingredienti dell’appuntamento annuale di tutti i Carnevali del mondo. In apparenza, queste manifestazioni popolari per eccellenza sembrano - come l’Halloween in Nord America un gioioso evento riservato ai bambini, o magari una festa strumentalizzata per ragioni commerciali, come la festa di San Valentino. nvece, come ci hanno dimostrato la Federazione delle Associazioni della Campania e l’Associazione dei Veneziani durante la Serata di Carnevale del 18 febbraio organizzata Idall’APIQ al Centro Leonardo da Vinci, il Carnevale è ben di più. È certamente un avvenimento allegro, giocoso e spettacolare durante il quale, “una volta all’anno, è permesso impazzire”. Però il Carnevale ha assunto caratteri particoli legati alle tradizioni locali e agli avvenimenti politici e sociali che hanno segnato la storia di ogni popolo e territorio. Perciò il Carnevale diventa un po’ l’emblema della diversità, nel nostro caso di alcune regioni italiane.
Significato della parola carnevale La parola “Carnevale” ha origini lontane e incerte. Già nelle antiche civiltà egiziane, fenicie, greche, e nelle comunità indiane d’America le persone portavano maschere e si dipingevano il viso durante le cerimonie sacre volte a chiedere la benevolenza degli dei. La parola Carnevale deriverebbe dal latino ‘carnem levare’, ‘togliere la carne’. Carnevale vorrebbe dunque dire “addio ai piaceri della carne”. La dimensione spirituale del Carnevale trova anche risposte nelle diverse etimologie della parola “maschera”. In latino la parola maska sembra avere un significato affine a dèmone. In longobardo “maska” equivale ad “anima dei morti”, ma in arabo - l’etimologia sicuramente più antica - “mascarà” significa “buffone” o “buffoneria”. Insieme, queste etimologie spiegano come mai durante il Carnevale si può dare sfogo alla propria allegra follia e debauche, nascosti dietro la maschera.
Il Carnevale Napoletano Il direttore artistico della compagnia teatrale salernitana “Animazione ‘90”, Gaetano Stella, ha presentato con affetto e umorismo le icone del Carnevale napoletano: Pulcinella, Palummella, la Zeza, U Pazzariello, Razullo e Sarchiapone. La compagnia campana ci ha trasmesso dal vivo le emozioni del teatro ma ci ha anche fatto viaggiare tra le diverse città della Campania (Caserta, Benevento, Salerno, Napoli, Avellino) grazie a filmati dei Carnevali odierni. Essi mantengono maschere e struttura tradizionali (la scalata dell’Albero della Cuccaggna insaponato, le sfilate dei carri o la musica originale della Tarantella) ma rispecchi-
ano anche le tendenze musicali oggi in voga (musica latina, techno e personaggi di video giochi). Il Carnevale campano - che sia quello elegante dei nobili del 16° secolo, con grandi balli e tornei, quello ecclesiastico o quello popolare, a partire dal 17° secolo, con le sue orgie, le sue volgarità e i giochi violenti e sanguinosi - svolge anche una funzione sociale, politica e catartica. Il servo diventa padrone, l’uomo donna, il gentiluomo ladro. Quando si è mascherati, tutto è permesso, anche la critica sociale e politica, e persino il gesto osceno.
il Carnevale veneziano A differenza di quello campano, il Carnevale veneziano alle origini non ha nulla di raffinato ed elegante. Come ci ha spiegato la professoressa Concetta Kosseim, il Carnevale veneziano è una specie di baccanale popolare, dove trovano spazio giochi di sangue, farse grossolane, divertimenti anche immorali. È nel 16° secolo che il Carnevale diventa sontuoso, raffinato, e a momenti anche austero. Come le gondole (un tempo ricoperte di dorature e sete preziose) che dopo il 1630 porteranno il lutto e verranno dipinte di nero in ricordo degli 80.000 morti della peste di quell’anno, così apparirà poco dopo, nel 1700, la maschera più tipica del carnevale veneziano, la sobria bautta. La bautta porta un mantello nero che le copre testa e corpo (il “tabarro”) mentre la parte scoperta del volto viene nascosta sotto una maschera bianca con il mento prolungato all’infuori (la “larva”) che permette di modificare la voce ed essere così irriconoscibili. Non svelare la propria identità era una logica conseguenza della severità della Serenissima: ogni infrazione alla morale dei costumi, all’onestà di un gentiluomo, alla lealtà di un veneziano verso la Serenissiman erano duramente e crudelmente punite; solo a Carnevale, protette dall’incognito, erano tollerate tutte le stramberie, i vizi, le follie, i duelli , le critiche e il divertimento senza ritegno. Oltre ai popolari saltimbanchi, acrobati o giocolieri, il programma è un concentrato di rappresentazioni teatrali, concerti, danza, mimo e poesia. A Venezia, i personaggi popolari del carnevale sono diventati veri e propri personnaggi della Commedia dell’Arte grazie a Carlo Goldoni: Arlecchino, Brighella, Pantalone si sono imposti nell’ambito del teatro vero e proprio con l’idea un pò carnevalesca che i padroni sono ridicolizzati dai virtuosi e dai servi. Anche i mestieri dell’artigianato intorno alle maschere e ai costumi sono una vera arte a Venezia, dove i “maschereri” creano maschere bellissime, complesse e molto costose, famose in tutto il mondo. Rivolta soprattutto ad un pubblico di ‘italofili’, per presentare aspetti culturali dell’Italia meno ‘turistici’ e scontati, questa rievocazione di tradizioni locali ha evidentemente fatto appello anche alla nostalgia della popolazione di origine italiana. Il signor Nino Aleotti, il pianista salernitano della compagnia “Animazione ‘90”, mi ha confidato che i “veri italiani” li si incontra all’estero, non in Italia. Ciò forse succede proprio grazie alle Associazioni regionali che, in Canada e altrove, si dedicano a mantenere in vita le tradizioni dei paesi d’origine con maggiore tenacia che non in Italia. Tali tradizioni vanno salvaguardate perchè ancora oggi svolgono delle funzioni sociali e identitarie importanti. v

Teatro -Théâtre - Theatre Quando è iniziata la sua storia d’ amore con le arti della scena? Da tanto. Da giovane. Influenzato probabilmente dai miei che hanno sempre avuto uno spirito molto vicino alle arti. Facile incamminarmi così in questo mondo. Mio fratello ed io siamo fra i fondatori della compagnia Sunil. L’ altro mio fratello ha studiato cinema a New York. Siamo tutti un pò ”imbevuti”... Cosa rappresenta il nome Sunil? Ci sono delle età nelle quali un viaggio iniziatico fa bene. Nell’ adolescenza per me partire per l’ India, lavorare come volontario, ha formato una riflessione non solo sul teatro ma anche sulla vita. Sunil, questo ragazzo indiano di Calcutta, conosciuto appunto in quella città, ha lasciato una traccia profonda in quelle che poi sono state le mie riflessioni, il modo di pensare il teatro, l’ idea del teatro, il modo di farlo. Il suo clown si allontana dallo stereotipo del personaggio che vuol far ridere. Perché un clown tragico? Nel mondo non si piange? Nel mondo si piange ma ci si commuove poco ed è differente, nel senso che la commozione è un momento liberatorio. Si guarda un tramonto e in quel momento lo spirito si muove in una zona strana del nostro pensiero. Si entra in una riflessione che ci mette in uno stato di commozione. È questo che mi interessa. Non è il pianto legato al dolore. A volte la realtà la si spiega attraverso una risata, ma c’è anche il bisogno di commuoversi, di farsi domande come: chi sono, dove vado, da dove vengo, con chi lo farò, cosa starò raggiungendo, cos’è il cielo, cosa significa vivere in terra. Cercare il senso. Riflessioni di questo tipo ci mettono come essere umani in uno stato di commozione.
ICARO di Daniele FINZI PASCA all’Usine C sorprende e commuove ancora dopo venti anni
Icaro: Quasi 20 anni, centinaia di rappresentazioni in tutto il mondo. Per quale ragione questo spettacolo continua a piacere? Perché piaccia... veramente non lo so. Perché continuare a portarlo in giro? Per me è più di un esercizio, è uno spettacolo faticoso. Il gioco della routine serve ad un attore per riuscire a superare certe preoccupazioni; in Icaro invece opera uno strano meccanismo. Ogni sera mi sforzo di mantenere una storia nel canale in cui é stata scavata la linea drammaturgica. Questo mi agita, ma mi fa anche bene. Anche come regista mi mantiene vicino al lavoro degli attori. Mi obbliga ad ogni rappresentazione a capire cos’è la paura, la preoccupazione, l’insicurezza.

La paura di entrare in scena l’assale ancora? Sempre. La paura... non mi assale, ma mi sfiora, mi gira intorno. La controllo, ma ce l’ho.
Icaro, monologo concepito per un solo spettatore, ode all’ immaginario e all’ amicizia, è anche una testimonianza contro il potere ed una meditazione sulla malattia e il sentore della morte. Un paziente (scelto fra gli spettatori), da poco ricoverato in ospedale, divide la stanza con un eccentrico personaggio (il clown). Per reagire contro la loro tragica sorte i due compagni “spiccano il volo” verso nuovi confini. Il clown sarà l’ artefice di una commovente, illusoria fuga. Icaro, scritto nel 1991, rappresenta il cavallo di battaglia del Teatro Sunil. Da circa vent’anni riscuote successo internazionale ed è presentato in sei lingue.
C’è una verità di Daniele in Icaro? C’è tanta onestà. La verità nel teatro non si può chiedere. Ciò che è vero non funziona. Il sangue vero di un attore non sembra vero sulla scena. Le lacrime vere non sembrano vere. Non c’è bisogno di verità sul palcoscenico; anzi bisogna rifuggirla perchè non sembra tale. C’è bisogno di onestà nell’interpretazione del ruolo.
aniele Finzi Pasca, artista eclettico di vasta esperienza, è nato a Lugano (Ticino) nel 1964. Nel D 1983 fonda il Teatro Sunil, dandogli il nome di un bambino che aveva accompagnato nella malattia a Calcutta in India.. La Trilogia della Fuga (di cui Icaro) e la Trilogia del Cielo sono fra gli spettacoli piú rappresentativi del Teatro Sunil. In Canada Finzi Pasca ha diretto grandi progetti e collaborato con Carbone 14, le Cirque du Soleil e le Cirque Eloize. In Italia ha scritto e diretto la cerimonia di chiusura delle Olimpiadi di Torino 2006 e in Russia, più recentemente, ha ideato lo spettacolo per le celebrazioni del 150o anniversario della nascita di Tchekov. Clown, attore, autore, acrobata, coreografo, regista, ideatore di grandi progetti, maestro... c’ é una veste che indossa con maggior piacere? Tutte... e anche nessuna. Nel senso che faccio quello che fanno tutti gli uomini di teatro. Il teatro è uno schermo molto complesso dove sei obbligato ad occuparti di millecinquecento cose. A volte sei anche produttore, manager. Diciamo che sono un uomo di teatro.
Recitare in Ticino o in Italia per un pubblico di lingua italiana è piú facile di quando ci si esibisce all’estero in altre lingue? Non è detto. Ci sono dei pubblici tanto generosi, come in America Latina, da lasciarmi stupito. Sembra soffiare sulle onde. Non fai quasi niente ma ti sposti velocemente. E il pubblico di Montreal? Un pubblico attento, abituato al teatro. Questo pubblico mi ha abbracciato, adottato. D’altra parte sono quasi vent’ anni di Icaro. Sto facendo proprio ora una tournée alla ricerca di città dove è successo qualcosa. Qui all’ Usine C, circa 13 anni fa è nato qualcosa, una scintilla, un proficuo rapporto con il Cirque du Soleil, Carbone 14, il Cirque Eloize. Ora mi sposo con uno dei fondatori del Cirque Eloize, Julie. Insieme abbiamo mille progetti. Quindi il legame con Montreal è profondo. Un legame nato così... come succede... Arrivi in un camerino, monti qualcosa, fai uno spettacolo e qualche giorno dopo senti che la vita sta “girando”. Un consiglio ad un giovane attore clown agli esordi? Studiare la leggerezza. Bisogna togliere nel recitare e cercare di essere leggeri. Continuerà a volare? Speriamo Al termine dell’ intervista, realizzata poco prima dello spettacolo, ora della vulnerabilità quando la “paura comincia a sfiorare e a girare intorno”, il maestro Daniele Finzi Pasca ha preso lo stesso il tempo di ringraziarci gentilmente, salutarci amichevolmente e abbracciarci affettuosamente. v

Aujourd’hui, le mot “durable” est un terme de plus en plus médiatisé, souvent associé à notre paysage politique et culturel. Toutefois, le principe de développement durable - c’est-à-dire de l’équilibre entre les ressources limitées et les besoins humains illimités- remonte aux années 70. Le directeur du Centre Canadien d’Architecture, Mirko Zardini, a exposé l’évolution historique de ce concept dans le domaine de l’architecture lors d’une conférence organisée par l’Association des professeurs d’italien du Québec (APIQ) au Centre Leonardo da Vinci le 18 mars dernier. a réflexion de Zardini est née lors des deux crises pétrolières des années 70 qui ont ébranlé le modèle de consommation occidental basé sur une notion de ressources infinies. Le phénomène de la diminution soudaine de pétrole a été d’une ampleur telle qu’il a forcé des discours présidentiels télévisés : l’Europe avait même interdit la circulation automobile certains jours de la semaine et on suggérait aux gens de se déplacer à bicyclette. Nixon parlait d’une urgence énergétique. Trudeau invitait ses concitoyens à réduire leur consommation d’essence. Même les jeux de société se sont alors transformés en intégrant des mesures éducatives. Ce fut le cas de « Energy Crisis », jeu dans lequel le vainqueur était celui qui réduisait le plus sa consommation énergétique. Même la Maison Blanche donnait le bon exemple : en 1979, le président Carter avait fait installer des panneaux solaires sur la résidence présidentielle. Lors de la décennie successive par contre, la diminution du prix du pétrole a empêché le développement de nouvelles sources d’énergie, concrétisant l’ancien modèle économique basé sur l’utilisation de l’or noir. De cette brève période persiste tout de même les traces de plusieurs recherches entreprises par des architectes et des ingénieurs. L’architecture verte trouve un terreau fertile dans les modèles alternatifs de développement mis de l’avant par les communautés hippies de la côte ouest des États-Unis. C’est en Amérique qu’apparaissent dès les années 60 les communautés « flower power » qui vont s’établir dans des endroits isolés, à la recherche d’un rapport plus harmonieux avec la nature, l’espace et les saisons. Ces communautés privilégient les technologies rudimentaires, des modèles de vie à

faible consommation et adoptent des systèmes constructifs, ingénieux et élémentaires pour réduire leur besoins énergétiques, recyclant les déchets produits par la société de consommation. Le rapport entre écologie et architecture se développe progressivement dans tout l’occident. De nombreux projets s’intéressent à l’usage des panneaux solaires, à l’utilisation de l’énergie éolienne et à une isolation plus efficace. Si le mouvement des années 70 a surtout engendré l’émergence de projets durables basés sur un « retour aux sources », aujourd’hui les projets d’architecture durable s’intéressent surtout aux villes et à leur développement. La tendance est soutenue par de nombreux organismes publics et privés qui appuient l’application de politiques de contrôle des matériaux ainsi que le durcissement des standards de construction et qui subventionnent de plus en plus les entreprises dont les projets se fondent sur les principes du développement durable. Aujourd’hui, le Danemark, l’Allemagne et l’Espagne sont les figures de proue du développement durable. Les États-Unis, un des pays qui polluent le plus au monde, remontent tranquillement l’échelle, grâce à un plan de développement des énergies alternatives de 80 milliards de dollars. Toutefois, l’architecte Mirko Zardini attarde sa réflexion à des problématiques qui dépassent les avancées technologiques. Quels sont les impacts d’un bâtiment écologique qui nécessite l’utilisation de machines pétrolifères pour sa construction ? Quels sont les bénéfices réels engendrés par rapport au coût de construction de ce genre d’édifice ? Quel est l’impact d’une seule maison verte parmi une centaine de maisons standards ? Si on devait détruire toutes les infrastructures non-durables existantes, que ferait-on des débris ? Ces quelques questions révèlent toute l’ampleur du problème. Le développement durable - défini dans le rapport Brundtland signé en 1987, lors de la Commission mondiale de l’environnement et du développement, comme l’« équilibre entre la réponse aux exigences actuelles sans compromettre celles des générations futures. » - ne peut se réaliser uniquement grâce aux nouvelles technologies. Pour être «soutenable » le développement nécessite une profonde redéfinition de notre mode de vie actuel, de notre manière de consommer et de l’ensemble des sacrifices que nous sommes disposés à faire individuellement pour un bien commun durable. Au fond, le développement durable requiert un changement culturel, une mentalité différente, une nouvelle idée de communauté et de bien être. Sans cette mobilisation socio-culturelle le développement durable demeurera une utopie. v

met my wife Carmelisa while she was vacationing in Napoli. We fell in love and got married in August 2001. I moved to Canada the following year,” Lauro, 39, explains. He left his home behind but not his passion. At the young age of 14, Lauro started working in the fashion industry at his family’s shirt factory in Napoli. “At 16, I was already selling shirts on my bicycle,” he reminisces. Today, Lauro brings his love for shirts to Montreal and travels back to Italy at least three times a year to create them. You can find his authentic, Made In Italy shirts at three stores in Montreal, and counting. His first two locations- Giav Shirts on Jarry St and Camiceria Lauro in Little Italy carry a colourful array of shirts and ties. “There is something very different about coming to my stores because every month you will find a new collection,” he says. His third location and most recent is Lauro & Co also located in Little Italy. The store is a one-stop destination for men’s clothing as they’ve expanded from shirts and accessories to also include suits and pants. It’s an exciting venture for Lauro, which he shares with his good friend, and co-owner Nick Vardaro, who was actually Carmine’s first ever client in Montreal. Vardaro also owns and operates IVC, part of the Artitalia Group. IVC is one of the largest manufacturers of retail display fixtures and supplier of merchandising solutions in North America. What you are also guaranteed to find here is a quality product. His shirts are all made in Napoli from fabrics he hand picks in Bologna. They come in many different styles, colours, and Lauro carries a great amount of attention to every single one. From pink, to orange, and blue, a rainbow of colours fills the store’s walls. “What I’m trying to do is bring in more flash like you would see in Italy. If you walk into any one of my stores you’ll immediately feel like you’re in Napoli,” he says. Napoli which he calls “la capitale del sud Italia per la moda” and which also happens to be the birthplace for shirts and ties. But although these days Carmine Lauro serves a vast clientele, he admits that at the start it wasn’t easy. “It was difficult, for sure,” he says. “Here in Montreal the fashion and the clothing culture is much more different than it is in Italy.”
So what did he think about Montreal fashion? “Ma non c’è niente qui!” he laughs. “The colours here for example are a little more dull than they are in Italy, but that is slowly changing.” Part of that change is being stirred by Carmine Lauro’s creative vision and passion. A passion that he developed in Napoli and has so successfully transpired to Montreal. So what is next for this king of shirt making? With the grand opening of his third store, Lauro & Co which he shares with fellow Napoletano Nick Vardaro, Carmine is already setting his sights on another store very soon. “Si fara ancora meglio,” he claims. “Lauro & Co is the beginning of something completely different in Montreal and a testament to the quality that Nick and I take pride in. Giving to Charity By Peter Pomponio
Every individual has their own reasons for giving to charity. The tax treatment of a particular gift may affect whether you make the gift and, possibly, the amount of the gift. In some cases, “planned giving” may be part of your overall strategy for minimizing tax. t may be helpful to understand how a gift to charity will be treated for tax purposes in order to determine what type of gift you wish to make, and which charity you may wish to give to.

The tax consequences will depend on factors such as: • whether the gift will be made during your lifetime or by will; • the type of property you gift to the charity; and • to whom the gift is made (the “donee” of the gift). You may be able to claim a charitable donation tax credit on your tax return for the eligible amount of gifts you make during your lifetime or by will. You must make your gift to a qualified donee in order for your gift to be eligible for the tax credit. Qualified donees include registered charities, registered Canadian amateur athletic associations, Canadian municipalities, the Government of Canada and its provinces or territories and other organizations specified in the Income Tax Act. You can find a list of registered charities on the Canada Revenue Agency website at www.cra.gc.ca. The eligible amount of the gift is generally the amount by which the fair market value of property you gift exceeds the amount of the benefit, if any, received by you for making the donation. The first $200 you donate is eligible for a federal tax credit of 15%, with an additional 29% credit on gifts over $200. Provincial tax credits are also available. The maximum amount of donations that you can claim in a year is generally limited to 75% of your net income. Donations in excess of this limit can be carried forward for up to 5 years. However, you may be able to claim up to 100% of your net income for gifts of certain types of property.
Donations made in the year of your death or by will, plus the unclaimed portion of any gifts for the previous 5 years, can be claimed on your final tax return. In this case, your maximum donation limit is 100% of your net income for the year of death. Any unused donations can be claimed on your tax return for the previous year, for up to 100% of the net income for that year. It is important to realize that if your gift to charity involves capital property (such as stocks, bonds or real estate), you generally will be regarded as having disposed of the property for proceeds equal to the fair market value of the property at that time. You may therefore realize a taxable capital gain as a result of the gift, if the fair market value of the gifted property exceeds its cost amount. One-half of the total gain would be included in your income for the year you make the donation and be subject to tax. Similar rules apply on death. Special rules provide that such gains will be tax-free where you make a gift of certain types of property. For example, if you make a qualifying gift of publicly-traded securities (including a share, debt obligation or a right listed on a designated stock exchange, a share of the capital stock of a mutual fund corporation, a unit of a mutual fund trust, an interest in a segregated fund trust or a prescribed debt obligation), any resulting capital gain could be tax-free. As a result, making gifts of certain qualifying capital property that has increased in value directly to a charity, rather than selling the property and donating the proceeds, will be generally more tax-efficient for you and can result in an enhanced gift to the charity.
The special rules also apply to gifts of: • certified cultural property (this includes works of art that the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board has determined meets certain criteria set out in the Cultural Property Export and Import Act); and • ecologically sensitive land (this includes land that has been certified to be important to the preservation of Canada’s environmental heritage). Deciding to give to charity is merely the first step in a planned giving strategy. You also need to consider the tax implications of your gift if you wish to maximize the benefits of the donation to you, your family and the charity. A Harmful Surprise By Me Pasquale Artuso ary and Tony purchase a duplex. On two separate occasions before the sale, they visited and carefully inspected the property, examining the walls, floors, ceilings cupboards and closets. However, the main floor of the duplex was cluttered with furniture that hid most of the walls. As for the closets and cupboards, they were full of the owners’ personal belongings. The basement was filled with lumber, boxes, old carpets and isolating material. The apartment on the second floor was uninhabited. Once the previous owners moved all of their belongings out and Mary and Tony took possession of the property, they realized that the basement walls, which were once hidden by clutter, were covered in mold that was also found in closets and cupboards. After only a few days of living in their new home, they began suffering from respiratory difficulties and symptoms of extreme fatigue. Afraid that the mold was the cause of their sudden symptoms, they hired a microbiologist to analyze the quality of the air in their home. The results of the analysis were shocking. The home was infested with dangerous mold spores that could have a dangerous effect on the inhabitants’ health.

What are Mary and Tony’s legal recourses? The presence of dangerous mold spores in the walls of the home can be considered a latent defect if the situation respects the definition of a latent defect as defined by the Civil Code of Quebec.
Article 1726 of the Civil Code of Quebec states: “The seller is bound to warrant the buyer that the property and its accessories are, at the time of the sale, free of latent defects which render it unfit for the use for which it was intended or which so diminish its usefulness that the buyer would not have bought it or paid so high a price if he had been aware of them. The seller is not bound, however, to warrant against any latent defect known to the buyer or any apparent defect; an apparent defect is a defect that can be perceived by a prudent and diligent buyer without any need of expert assistance”.

In order to have a latent defect, the following elements must exist: 1- The defect must be serious The defect must be serious to the point that had the buyer known the defect, he would not have purchased the property or would have purchased it at a lesser price. In most cases, Quebec courts have deemed that in a residential building, a defect that is hazardous to health is serious. 2- The defect was unknown to the buyer at the moment of sale Mary and Tony were unaware of any mold problem at the moment of sale. The sellers did not mention such an issue and they did not see any symptoms of a mold problem when they inspected the property. 3- The defect had to be non-apparent and hidden at the moment of sale The mold problem was hidden and non-apparent at the time of the sale because furniture and other objects covered the walls. It was only after the sale and once the previous owners had moved out that they could properly view the walls. The fact that they did not have a professional building inspector inspect the duplex before they purchased it does not necessarily invalidate their recourse against the sellers. 4- The defect had to exist before the sale The buyer can usually benefit from a presumption that the defect existed before the sale if he or she advises the seller of the defect in a short delay after the sale. Mary and Tony can ask the Court for the cancellation of the sale or the reduction of the price of sale. A Show Simply SuperFantastico Encouraging Italian Music to the Next Generation

homes across the city and getting recognized across North America. This show could not have reached such extraordinary heights without the incredibly generous support of many sponsors, including CFMB radio 1280 am and its co-hosts Silvana Di Flavio and Nick de Vincenzo. Superfantastico is a platform for singers to hone their vocal skills and to perform on the renowned stage at Place des Arts, where many others singing sensations once played. Since its inception in 1995 at the auditorium of Collège Jean-Eudes, the competition has come a long way. What started out as a small production 15 years ago has turned into a big event marked in the calendars of hundreds of Montrealers who are proud of their Italian heritage, culture and language. The Italian singing competition concept stemmed from a half-hour program that was airing on Montreal’s foreign-language radio station CFMB, where children would call in and sing an Italian tune on air. Radio hosts Nick De Vincenzo and Silvana Di Flavio saw there was demand to have a show catering to young singers and music lovers alike. “It’s all about the young generation touching base with their Italian roots by spreading the Italian language and culture,” Silvana asserts. Before show time, contestants expressed how SuperFantastico was integral to their musical development. “The progress of each participant was not only vocal but some artists increased their self-esteem and came out looking like stars,” Silvana says with pride. The finals at Place des Arts featured short video clips, introducing the next singer as they took the stage. Compared to other years, the accompaniment of the live band added a special touch to the riveting performances. As is tradition, Dominic Micelli, last year’s winner, came back on stage to perform “Stai Con Me”. As a newcomer to the judge scene, high-profile songwriter Vincenzo Incenzo, noted his excitement to be in Montreal for this competition. “In Montreal, si trovano Italiani che sono piu Italiani degli Italiani d’Italia.” It was a special moment when Vincenzo graced the stage with his performance. “This is a great avenue for artist development and for young singers to bloom,” says returning judge Ivan Berry. It’s been 15 years of high quality performance.” Canadian Idol judge Farley Flex also returned to be part of the panel of judges in honour of his love of Italian music. “It’s not about understanding the language. Music is about rhythm and intensity. I love culture preservation and appreciation and this show does just that, it reunites generations of Italian Montrealers.” Larry Mancini and Giorgia Fumanti were also judges. In addition to strong vocals, stage presence, confidence, versatility, good song choice and connection with the audience were also determining factors in choosing the standout performance of the night. Vincenzo Incenzo knows all too well about undiscovered talent when he hears it. Enrico Riccio was the one whose powerful, energetic and mesmerizing performance made it clear that he had become one of the front runners. As soon as Enrico finished his song, the crowd cheered with enthusiasm. Enrico was proclaimed the winner of SuperFantastico 2010 for his rousing rendition of Andrea Bocelli’s Il Mare Calmo della Sera. Claudia Vaccaro captivated the audience with Minuetto, placing her in second position. Gina Cuffaro is a SuperFantastico veteran; she has participated every single year since she was 12. “La Diva et le Maestro” Natalie Choquette entre mélodie et comédie eu de chanteuses d’opéra de calibre international réussissent à marier humour et opéra. En interprétant une série de personnages dans un spectacle comique unique en son genre, la soprano coloratura Natalie Choquette a réussi cet exploit avec brio en emportant encore une fois son public dans un univers artistique sans pareil lors de son spectacle “La Diva et le Maestro,” présenté le 27 mars dernier dans la salle du théâtre Lino e Mirella Saputo du Centre Leonardo da Vinci. Ce rendez-vous musical mettait en scène plusieurs divas comiques et excessives de renommée mondiale qui rendent la vie impossible au pauvre Maestro Claudio Dolce (M. Claude Ledoux) aux prises avec chacune d’entre elles ! Accompagnée par l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Leonardo da Vinci, sous la direction de Ledoux, Choquette a transporté le public grâce a des airs d’opéra de Verdi, de Bizet et de Puccini, notamment, qu’elle a su interpréter avec beaucoup de fantaisie. Des costumes drôles et colorés à l’image du caractère excentrique des personnages rehaussaient le caractère burlesque du spectacle qui mettait en vedette les frasques de “Mme Osolemio”, de l’athlète Russe “Nadia Camenitchaïkovskyaya” ou de Mme “Fettucini”, chaudement applaudie après son interprétation en mangeant des spaghettis et en se gargarisant avec du vin rouge, de Nessun Dorma de l’opéra Turandot de “Giacomo Cappuccini.” Les filles de la soprano Natalie Choquette, Éléonore et Arianne, ont joint leur mère sur scène pour une formidable interprétation de la chanson “Il Mio Canto Libero” de Lucio Battisti, pièce qu’elles ont aussi enregistrée ensemble pour le plus récent album de Natalie, “Terra Bella” (2009). On comptait aussi parmi les invités de la soirée, la jeune soprano Sonia Benedetto qui a interprété “Belle Nuit, Ô Nuit d’Amour” (Barcarolle) de Jacques Offenbach en duo avec la diva dans un sketch mettant en scène deux grandes dames parisiennes qui après une longue journée de shopping se racontent leurs aventures autour d’un café. Avant le premier rappel, Choquette a puisé dans le répertoire napolitain en prêtant sa voix magnifique aux très populaires chansons Funiculì Funiculà et O Sole Mio. La soirée s’est terminée de façon originale lors de la dernière scène du troisième rappel lorsque les musiciens de l’orchestre exaspérés par l’intransigeance des divas ont feint de faire la grève en quittant la scène par petits groupes en brandissant des pancartes affichant leur désaccord. Mariant opéra, humour et variété, ce spectacle nouveau genre invitait les spectateurs à apprécier l’opéra tout en se laissant charmer et divertir par les performances de madame Choquette. v

Our activities are inspired by a vision entailing the prevention of disease and the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices. ACCÉSSS offers a full range of training sessions in different areas such as family violence, senior citizens, breast cancer prevention, menopause, nutrition and healthy dieting as well as healthy sexuality. All of our training is adapted to Quebec’s multicultural reality and is provided to community organizations as well as to the public health and social services network. We also have a workshop on understanding the social and health services by ethnocultural communities. Concerned also with men’s health, ACCÉSSS is in the process of developing an information program on prostate cancer. This type of cancer is on the rise and is the most common cancer in men. We wish also to promote the creation of a support group for men that have prostate cancer. However, the government’s funding programs to community organizations and their projects do not always meet the real needs of the ethnocultural communities. This occurs while immigration to Québec is constantly on the rise. In 2009-2010, there will be more than 50,000 immigrants arriving in Québec. Consequently, ACCÉSSS has decided to diversify its sources of funding and to try to reduce its dependency on government grants. To do this, ACCÉSSS wants to develop a partnership with the business sector for the implementation of this financial diversification strategy. he Grand is located in a heritage building that dates back to 1882, formerly the Grand Hotel. In 2009, the building underwent a makeover and opened its doors as one of the most ambitious pizzerias in the nation. Founded in Naples in 1984 by Antonio Pace, the AVPN’s mission is to promote the culinary tradition of the Neapolitan pizza throughout the world. Pace struggled for years to have Neapolitan pizza recognized by the Italian government as a DOC (denominazione di origine controllata) product, an Italian quality assurance label for food products. In order to receive the stamp of approval by the AVPN, the pizza must adhere to very rigorous guidelines. The pizza must be cooked by wood, be made using type 00 flour, San Marzano tomatoes, all natural fior-di-latte or bufala mozzarella, fresh basil, salt and yeast. Moreover, only fresh, all-natural, non-processed ingredients are acceptable.

A native of Calabria, and having worked in Verona at a family run pizzeria for several years, Pasqualino Oliveri packed his bags for Canada’s Capital three years ago. Eager to show Canadians an authentic Italian pizza, Pasqualino is seeking to make The Grand pizzeria, the second Canadian pizzeria to be recognized by the AVPN (l’Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana), a haven for authentic Neapolitan pizza. The only Canadian oven to bear this distinction is Pizzeria Libretto in Toronto.
PI: What type of culinary training as a pizzaiolo did you receive in Italy? PO: My brother is a teacher at an Italian pizzaioli school, and I worked with my brother in Verona. I also have a diploma from a hotelier academy. PI: Do you consider your trade an art? PO: Yes... but also for example, when making a pizza, there is a chemical process between the yeast and the flour. It’s just not about mixing water, flour, and salt! This is why in Italy there is a school for pizza making. PI: What is your favourite pizza? PO: My pizza is a plain pizza with bufala mozzarella... not too much toppings because I want to taste the dough, the tomatoe, and the cheese. Those three are the main checkpoints for the quality of the pizza. PI: So the simpler the pizza, the better? PO: Yes, because if you put too much stuff, you can’t taste the pizza. PI: What is the best cheese to use on a pizza? PO: Bufala and fior-di-latte. I think it’s the best product, it gives a different taste. Cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese are chewier when cooked, and I think they are too heavy. When I look at franchised pizzerias, they put a lot of cheese, they put cheese on top, they put cheese inside the dough... it’s too much! PI: Should pizza be eaten with utensils or with your hands? PO: With your hands, especially in Italy. There are two meals, pizza and chicken, that you eat with your hands. You cut the pizza, and then you eat it with your hands. That’s the real way! v

By Joey Franco n Saturday April 24, Mr. Rinaldo Canonico was honoured by the Associazione Culturale Calabrese Savuto Cleto. Mr. Canonico, a prominent business figure in Ottawa received the association’s Community Acheivement Award for his outstanding commitment to his community. The event was held at St. Anthony’s Italian Conference Centre at 523 St. Anthony Street. The evening’s honourary guest was the Mayor of the city of Lago. Canonico was in his 20s when he left his native town of Lago in Calabria. After arriving in Canada in 1956, Canonico worked very hard to become one of the most successful Italian entrepreneurs in Ottawa. Throughout the years, numerous prime ministerial wives, prime ministers, and celebrities have walked through the doors of Rinaldo’s salon and spa. Past clients include Maureen McTeer, Fergie, Queen Noor of Jordan, Sophia Loren, Brian Mulroney, and Margaret Thatcher. Canonico, a brilliant stylist and an intelligent businessman, was also appointed as a Director of the Federal Business Development Bank (FBDB) during the Mulroney years. He was also an advisor for the Ottawa Roughriders of the CFL. His success and outstanding commitment to his business is something worth applauding. v
