The launch of ITA Airways’ flight between Canada and Italy

ITA Airways, Italy’s newest airline (not to be confused with defunct Alitalia) made its debut in the Canadian market in mid-May with the launch of its new non-stop connection between Toronto and Rome. “The launch of ITA Airways’ flight between Canada and Italy comes in response to the significant demand for travel between the two nations, in part driven by the substantial Italian-Canadian population,” stated chief commercial officer Emiliana Limosani at the ribbon-cutting ceremony May 10. “The inauguration marks another milestone for bilateral relations between Canada and Italy, partners and allies,” added Luca Zelioli, Consul General of Italy in Toronto.

Giovanni Maria De Vita, in charge of the Italian Ministry of External Affairs’ new program, Roots Tourism, was also present at the announcement and did not come empty handed. He explained that he was pleased of the Roma-Toronto connection and that the ITA flights would tie in this new program that offered promotional discounts to Canadians that wanted to visit their families’ town of origin. met thousands of people and learned many truths during my 40 years of involvement within the largest Italian-Canadian community non-profit organization. The biggest revelation was understanding that artists need businesspeople and commerce needs culture. It took me years to balance that equation while raising funds and realizing social and cultural community programs and projects at Villa Charities in Toronto.

The hundreds of writers, poets, actors, artists and movie producers I met often complained that the capitalist developer contractors did not support their industry enough.

On occasion, some of those contractors referred to artists as MDFs (morti di fame). Often I tried to be the pontifex minimus, the bridge builder. It became clear to me that culture and commerce go together and are different sides of the same coin. Culture needs sponsors and commerce needs culture. Community and society need both to progress.

Caius Maecenas (70-8 BCE) understood and promoted that truth. He was a Roman diplomat, counsellor to the Roman emperor Augustus and a wealthy patron of such poets as Virgil and Horace. The Italian word mecenate, meaning patron or person who supports an artist, is derived from this ancient Roman’s last name.

Artists spend so much time looking for sponsors or grants.

Meanwhile contractors, after building their villas, spend time searching for paintings and books to cover their drywall and sculptures to fill their halls and gardens.

Corrado Paina, a Milan-born student protester, journalist, artist, poet, writer and intellectual, immigrated to Toronto in 1987 at age 33 and knew both sides of that coin.

EDITORIAL As a charming, educated, sophisticated modern Renaissance man, he brought a new vision to the Italian-Canadian community and to commerce in the GTA. After years of dealing with health issues, Corrado passed away on April 12, 2024.

For over two decades, first as editor of Partners and then as executive director, he led the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario with intelligence, modern ideas and ancient dreams. He dedicated this time to connecting Italy and Canada. He used his passion and leadership to influence both cultures while promoting business and trade relationships for both countries. More than that, he was an accomplished writer, talented artist, editor and cultural influencer. He encouraged new writers, edited books, looked for and promoted funding opportunities and elevated commerce in culture and culture in commerce, benefitting us all.

He was a mecenate. “The purpose of culture is to build bridges not to celebrate differences,” I heard him say often. He succeeded in what he preached by coordinating the twinning of the two most dynamic cities of Italy and Canada: Milano with Toronto.

I read some of his books, many of his poems, appreciated his art, listened to him calmly contribute at dozens of community meetings and we broke bread at many cocktails and dinners.

What I will remember most, however, were our many conversations and debates on advancing and solving the challenges of our community and solving the problems of the world while enjoying an espresso on the patio of Cafe Diplomatico in Little Italy on College Street in Toronto. Corrado was indeed the Italian Ambassador on College Street. He also lived in the neighbourhood and walked College and the life he preached.

Grazie Corrado, for making a difference in Milano and in Toronto.

Condoglianze to his family.

Rest in peace, Corrado. More time for poetry.

Ha dedicato questo tempo a collegare l’Italia e il Canada. Ha usato la sua passione e la sua leadership per influenzare entrambe le culture, promuovendo al contempo relazioni commerciali per entrambi i paesi. Ma non solo: è stato uno scrittore affermato, un artista di talento, un editore e un influencer culturale. Ha incoraggiato nuovi scrittori, ha curato libri, ha cercato e promosso opportunità di finanziamento e ha elevato il commercio nella cultura e la cultura nel commercio, a beneficio di tutti noi.

Era un mecenate. “L’obiettivo della cultura è costruire ponti, non celebrare le differenze”, gli ho sentito dire spesso. È riuscito in ciò che predicava coordinando il gemellaggio tra le due città più dinamiche d’Italia e del Canada: Milano e Toronto.

Ho letto alcuni dei suoi libri, molte delle sue poesie, ho apprezzato la sua arte, l’ho ascoltato con calma in decine di incontri comunitari e abbiamo spezzato il pane in molti cocktail e cene.

Ciò che ricorderò di più, tuttavia, sono state le nostre numerose conversazioni e dibattiti sull’avanzamento e la risoluzione delle sfide della nostra comunità e sulla soluzione dei problemi del mondo, mentre gustavamo un espresso nel patio del Cafe Diplomatico nella “Little Italy” di College Street a Toronto. We have wealth, safety, cultural influence and choice by orders of magnitude greater than anything enjoyed by our immigrant nonni. We know their stories, but we have yet to write our own. nity a disservice. I’m an opera singer, and was recently invited to speak and sing at Fête Chinoise, Canada’s most fabulous Lunar New Year gala. The founder, friend Deborah Lau-Yu, has created a luxe and inspiring event to proudly celebrate an ancient culture, while galvanizing its contemporary leaders. I sang in Mandarin, Cantonese and Italian. I thought: Where is our Fête Italienne? The median age was 35ish, with a split of immigrants and Canadian-born Chinese, who connected in a seamless mix of English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

In my velvet-curtained world of music, I am a proud ambassador for Italy’s artistic and historic traditions. Yet this beautiful, Chinese experience highlights a key issue in our own community: without learning Italian, Italian-Canadians cannot participate in, learn from and iterate contemporary Italian culture.

Yes, travelling to Italy to immerse oneself in the language is expensive. Instead, consume your fill of inexpensive resources right here in Canada. The Italian Contemporary Film Festival and Lavazza present the IncluCity Festival, screening contemporary and classic Italian cinema in Toronto’s Distillery District runs from June 28 to July 21, 2024. We’re partnering to present Cowboys and Divas, bringing spaghetti westerns, country music and opera together joyfully, with sequins! Villa Charities hosts hundreds of events throughout the year. And they need volunteers. Come to Italian Singles events. Go to the opera. Learn Italian at the Italian Cultural Institute or bring your children to Centro Scuola on Saturdays at the Columbus Centre.

I’ve heard many in our community opine: “Italian isn’t as valuable as French or Spanish, which are used globally.” Or, “Mandarin is a better investment for my child.”

I disagree. According to the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario, Italy is Canada’s ninth largest trading partner, ahead of France and India, with imports of $5 billion annually. Your career path does not indicate any experience in artificial intelligence. What made you want to run Mila?

On the face of it, I didn’t have the profile for the job. What attracted me and no doubt appealed to Yoshua Bengio, the founder of Mila, and his board of directors, were two things.

Firstly, Mila is first and foremost a social project. It is a notfor-profit organisation born of a historic partnership between McGill University, the Université de Montréal and several other universities, funded by the governments of Canada (30%) and Quebec (40%) and by the private sector (30%). So I saw this as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to contribute to a huge, unique and innovative project that would have repercussions all over the world. On the other hand, I believe that I came to this project with complementary expertise, more human and strategic.

We spoke about AI technology with Valérie Pisano, president and CEO of Mila, formerly Chief Talent Officer at Cirque du Soleil and co-founder of the Mobius Bias Project (an initiative focused on diversity and female leadership). Pisano speaks Italian and travels to Italy, where a large part of her family still lives.

Her youngest daughter is learning Italian on Duolingo and by talking to her Nonno Carlo.

Where does Montreal stand in the world when it comes to artificial intelligence research?

Thanks to Yoshua Bengio, arguably the most important AI researcher today, Montreal has become one of the world’s leading AI hubs and attracts a lot of exceptional talent. Canada is a leader in AI and deep learning and is in the top 5 in the world behind China, the United States, Singapore and the UK. ChatGPT, among others, was developed in Montreal, Toronto and elsewhere in Canada.

Mila is actively working on over 150 different projects. How many of these will lead to a concrete application?

Mila focuses on fundamental research and the advancement of science. Our job is not to create applications. Our aim is to make increasingly intelligent systems capable of solving technology-related problems.

Imagine, for example, an AI application to which you have given permission to read all your emails. This application will decode your style, will know your social codes and will eventually be able to conduct your exchanges on the basis of leads that you have given it. By approaching the intellectual and inter-relational capacities that until now have belonged exclusively to humans, this could also lead to things going wrong.

Mila sta lavorando attivamente a oltre 150 progetti diversi. Quanti di questi porteranno a un’applicazione concreta?

L’obiettivo principale di Mila è la ricerca fondamentale e il progresso della scienza.

Some people claim that it won’t be long before AI surpasses human intelligence. What is the situation?

On the whole, we have moved into an era where AI has more and more capabilities, and we need to ask ourselves how fast we want it to continue to evolve. In some areas, AI has surpassed human intelligence.

Yoshua Bengio is one of the people who are investing a huge amount of time and resources in getting governments and companies to establish a framework to ensure that before a project affecting millions of humans is deployed, it can be prevented from being used for malicious purposes.

AI is evolving rapidly, and governments are worried. They are mobilising to develop security mechanisms and decide what is expected of these new technologies. The response is a mix of actions anchored in a legislative framework. In Canada, Bill C-27 should be adopted this year. The European Union has just adopted the EU AI Act. The United States is more cautious, but the current President, Joe Biden, has signed an executive order to regulate artificial intelligence.

Is there any reason to fear AI? We need to treat AI like other technologies that have had a huge impact. There have been extraordinary advances in biopharmaceuticals and aviation, but there is a protocol that has to be followed before a plane can fly. It’s the same for AI. It has to be properly supervised to prevent it getting out of hand and ensure that its use does not infringe human rights.

C’è qualche motivo per temere l’IA? Dobbiamo trattare l’IA come altre tecnologie che hanno avuto un impatto enorme. Are there any areas that will be more affected than others in the future?

It’s very hard to imagine any areas that won’t benefit from the development of AI. Innovations in the medical field will help doctors to make more accurate diagnoses and propose better treatments. Major advances are being made in education, because young people do not all learn in the same way. We talk about AI enabling cheating, but it will also enable us to reinvent teaching in our societies. AI should make human work smoother, more efficient and more intelligent at a time when there is a global shortage of jobs. We need to be open to this unique moment of exploration, which cannot be ignored.

Ci sono settori che saranno più colpiti di altri in futuro? È molto difficile immaginare che ci siano settori che non beneficeranno dello sviluppo dell’IA. How did the project come about?

The idea was born in 2013, during a conference on the Italian language. Immediately afterwards, the ambassador at the time, Gian Lorenzo Corrado, consulted a group of Montreal entrepreneurs to set up a new entity to teach Italian in the Montreal and Laval area. The Consulate General of Italy and the Embassy collaborated in the creation with Giovanni Rapanà, Silvio De Rose and Carmine D’Argenio (current president), and founded the Centro Scuola Dante Alighieri. The embassy and the consulate were therefore the centres that promoted the idea. I collaborated behind the scenes at the request of the three founders. I built the project because it had to be presented as an idea in a concrete way to the institutions that pushed us to realize it.

Come è nato il progetto L’idea è nata nel 2013, in occasione di un convegno sulla Lingua Italiana. Subito dopo l’ambasciatore di allora, Gian Lorenzo Corrado, consultò un gruppo di imprenditori montrealesi per mettere in campo un ente nuovo per insegnare l’italiano sul territorio di Montréal e Laval. Il Consolato Generale d’Italia e l’Ambasciata hanno collaborato alla creazione con Giovanni Rapanà, Silvio De Rose e Carmine D’Argenio (attuale presidente), e fondarono il Centro Scuola Dante Alighieri. L’ambasciata e il consolato furono dunque i centri promotori dell’idea. Ho collaborato dietro le quinte su richiesta dei tre fondatori. Ho costruito il progetto perché andava presentato come idea in maniera concreta alle istituzioni che ci hanno spinto a realizzarlo.

entro Scuola Dante Alighieri (CESDA) has been promoting the Italian language and culture for 10 years in the Greater Montreal area. It offers study programs for adults and children and is recognised by the Italian government. We met with Gian Galeazzo Pollifrone, CEO of CESDA, to take stock of this decade, recounting the beginnings, the recovery after the pandemic and what’s new. Pollifrone was born in Genoa, Liguria, then moved to Canada. After several years at PICAI, he worked behind the scenes to create CESDA.

Offre programmi di studio per adulti e bambini ed è riconosciuto dal governo italiano. Abbiamo incontrato Gian Galeazzo Pollifrone, amministratore delegato (CEO) del CESDA, per fare il punto su questo decennio, raccontando gli inizi, la ripresa dopo la pandemia e le novità. How did your collaboration come about?

I worked at PICAI for 10 years, although I had other assignments here in Canada before that, and in order not to sit idly by, I collaborated in various roles as a teacher, but I also took care of the IT part.

When the idea of setting up CESDA came up, the three founders were looking for someone who could actually set up the project and I accepted.

Come è nata la sua collaborazione?

Ho lavorato dieci anni al PICAI, anche se prima ho avuto altri incarichi qui in Canada e per non stare con le mani in mano ho collaborato con vari ruoli come insegnante ma mi sono occupato anche della parte informatica. How was it received by the community, and who turns to CESDA today?

It was an alternative, at least in the initial years, to the existing educational offer. Our students come not only from Italian families but also from other ethnic groups. Italian is a language that fascinates many. There are not only children and grandchildren of Italian families.

Come è stato accolto dalla comunità e chi è che si rivolge al CESDA oggi?

Era un’alternativa, almeno negli anni iniziali, all’offerta formativa già esistente. I nostri studenti non vengono soltanto dalle famiglie italiane ma anche da altre etnie. L’italiano è una lingua che affascina molti. Non ci sono soltanto figli e nipoti di famiglie italiane.

From the beginning of the project to the time before the pandemic, how many were enrolled?

At the beginning, there were only a few enrolled until there were over 400 students. With the arrival of the pandemic, things changed because there were limits to meeting in person, but we still tried to parry the blow through online courses, which objectively have limited effectiveness. During the course of the pandemic, the number of participants plummeted. With the relaxation of restrictions, however, we were the first to return to attendance as soon as the government gave the green light. For over a year and a half, we hired additional staff to comply with the restrictions at the time. Now we are back to pre-pandemic numbers.

Dall’inizio del progetto al periodo prima della pandemia, quanti erano gli iscritti?

All’inizio erano pochi gli iscritti fino ad arrivare ad oltre 400 studenti. Con l’arrivo della pandemia le cose sono cambiate perché c’erano limiti ad incontrarsi di persona, ma abbiamo comunque cercato di parare il colpo attraverso i corsi online che hanno oggettivamente un’efficacia limitata. Nel corso della pandemia il numero degli iscritti è precipitato. Con l’allentamento delle restrizioni invece siamo stati i primi a tornare in presenza appena il Governo ha dato il via libera. Per oltre un anno e mezzo abbiamo assunto ulteriore personale per rispettare le limitazioni dell’epoca. Ora siamo tornati ai numeri prepandemia.

What’s new?

We are back to teaching in the schools in Montreal where we were before the pandemic, but now we are in several schools in Laval and a bigger one in West Island and this is new for us. The other big news is that now, in addition to offering the program for adults at Casa d’Italia, we have launched Italian courses for children, so I would say that we are quite satisfied.

Quali sono le novità?

Siamo tornati ad insegnare nelle scuole di Montreal dove già eravamo presenti anche prima della pandemia, ma ora siamo in diverse scuole di Laval e più in grande nel West Island e questa è una novità per noi. hen I married my Kiwi boyfriend in 1983, I was living in my Italian-Canadian neighbourhood in Toronto. Concetta, an elderly woman who lived across the street, congratulated me with a genuine embrace and asked me where my new husband was from. I responded that he came from Nuova Zelanda. She looked surprised and asked in her charming dialect: “E chi parte d’Italia è chist?”

(What part of Italy is that?) I still treasure that moment; it makes me smile when I think of it. Having visited New Zealand many times with my husband since 1983, I feel it has become a third home, and we can never have too many homes.

New Zealand is composed of three islands, the North and South Islands, and the smaller Stewart Island, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea. The Maori name is Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud.

It is the same land size as Italy but only just over five million people inhabit the islands. It is a country of extreme rocky landscapes, green hills, mountains, bush, rivers and endless beaches where you can walk for miles. Have you ever wondered how it must be like for an Italian living with celiac disease? What are the causes, prevalence, coping strategies and alternatives for this common yet misunderstood disorder that prevents one from eating traditional pasta? Panoram Italia delved into the matter, shedding light on its impact on Italians in Canada and its effects on the traditional Italian diet.

Italy, hailed as the land of pasta and pizza (wheat), has one of the highest rates of celiac disease in the world, affecting approximately 1.65% of the population. This is partly attributed to the country’s historical consumption of gluten-rich foods, deeply ingrained in its culinary culture. In Canada, studies suggest that nearly 1% of the population (or 1 in 114 Canadians) have celiac disease, with 80% of cases going undiagnosed.

This often leads to years of symptoms and health issues before a proper diagnosis is made.

But what is celiac disease? It is known as a common autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye that causes the body to attack and damage the small intestine, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue and an impairment in the absorption of key nutrients.

For reasons that are still unclear, rates of autoimmune diseases are on the rise. Data suggests the causes might be related to changes in lifestyle, environment or both. What we do know is that genetics play an important role as the risk of developing celiac disease increases up to 20% when a first-degree (par-

It is still unclear if modern wheat varieties with higher gluten are contributing to the rise. Yet it appears obvious that the Western diet’s processed foods can worsen celiac symptoms due to their tendency to hide gluten sources in all kinds of products such as processed meats, candy bars or potato chips. Gluten even manages to find its way in all kinds of unexpected sources such as lipstick, vitamins, dental products and play-dough.

Living gluten-free can hence be tedious and discouraging, especially without proper information. Though it is burdensome, costly and socially limiting, specialists actually recommend celiac disease patients to avoid gluten-containing products altogether to avoid acute digestive symptoms. Lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet is the standard treatment. This includes avoiding cross-contact, such as using separate kitchen tools, like toasters for gluten-free and regular bread.

Understanding celiac disease is crucial for both individuals living with the condition and their families. By advocating for greater awareness, promoting early detection and embracing alternative diet options, we can empower individuals with celiac disease to lead fulfilling lives on the gluten-free path.

42-year-old Diana Antonacci recalls that it was her sister that was first diagnosed with celiac disease. Her journey inspired Antonacci to start her own business called Biscotti Diana focused on authentic Italian cuisine without gluten. “I’m all about highquality, fresh ingredients, sticking to homemade traditional Italian cooking.” Established five years ago in Laval, her homebased business, Biscotti Diana, is MAPAQ (Quebec’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Food ministry) and gluten-free certified. “As a gluten-free practitioner, I create a variety of gluten-free delights like zeppole, pastiera di riso, fresh pasta, bread, etc. I advocate for diverse, seasonal ingredients and encourage getting back to basics in the kitchen.”

Her goal is to empower others with this lifestyle, offering tips and tools for a vibrant gluten-free life.

“When I first found out about my condition, things were tough. I was anemic and had lost a lot of weight.

As a musician, I even had to turn down touring opportunities due to the difficulty of finding gluten-free options on the road. I remember one time, a restaurant assured me a dish was gluten-free, but it still contained traces of gluten which led to an intense digestive reaction, and made me miss a concert,” says 44-year-old Dominic Cifarelli. Since his diagnosis, the food industry has stepped up with better alternatives.

Berchicci supermarket sells many suitable options. He swears that Barilla’s gluten-free pasta is practically indistinguishable from the regular version. He also relies on Oggi Pizza Crust— which has become a staple for him. As for restaurants, Ottavio’s has been a go-to for satisfying his pizza cravings—it’s the closest to authentic pizza he’s found. However, dining out can still be worrisome. “Some places claim to have gluten-free options, but

It gave her a clear understanding of the changes she needed to make and the implications of her condition. “Traveling to Italy has been a joy because of their advanced gluten-free options. They take it very seriously, offering gluten-free choices everywhere: hotels, restaurants, cafes. I felt safe and comfortable with their attention to detail—such a pleasant surprise,” she says. Canada still has progress to make in this regard according to Santucci, who recognizes it takes significant resources and commitment to implement these changes.

A memorable moment after 33-year-old Francine Romano’s diagnosis was Christmas with her family, where they cooked glutenfree. Since then, Christmas keeps getting better for her as her whole family enjoys gluten-free authentic Italian foods now. Her aunt even makes gluten-free cannoli, lasagna, zeppole and more. Although it might be challenging, living with celiac disease should not be a limitation. One of Romano’s pro-tips is to build relationships with restaurants. “Call ahead to ask questions and feel more comfortable before booking.

They are mainly young people with degrees and professional experience who speak fluent English. Unlike previous generations, who migrated by necessity, today’s immigration from Italy is more a choice than a matter of survival.

Gloria Fortina, 29, from Bassano del Grappa, arrived in Vancouver in 2018 after a stay in the United States, where she worked as an au pair in Chicago and California. She has gained experience in marketing and currently works at the Italian Cultural Centre as a cultural coordinator. She admitted that before starting her job at Centro, she almost had no contact with the Italian community here. What she likes about Canadian society is its greater appreciation for nature and its respect for cultural diversity. Better opportunities motivated her choice: “In Italy, I felt like something was missing. I couldn’t contribute the way I wanted to because the people in charge do not value suggestions or help. In Canada, collaboration is valued.”

Social media has replaced the Centro Italian as a tool for social aggregation for many generations of immigrants. The “new wave” prefers platforms like Italians in Vancouver or the

Da allora, per oltre un secolo la presenza italiana ha continuato a espandersi, specie a Vancouver, fino alla fine degli anni ’70, per poi subire un drammatico declino fino alla metà degli anni 2000, quando la vita comunitaria, adagiata su una tranquilla, prevedibile quotidianità, è stata movimentata dall’irruzione di un numero sempre crescente di italiani che scelgono di vivere in Canada. Sono in gran parte giovani, spesso con titoli universitari, esperienza professionale e parlano un buon inglese. Se le passate generazioni erano emigrate spinte dal bisogno, oggi dall’Italia non si emigra per sopravvivenza ma per scelta.

Sono state le opportunità migliori a motivare la sua scelta: “In Italia sentivo che mi mancava qualcosa. Non potevo contribuire come desideravo perché chi ha potere non gradisce suggerimenti o aiuto. In Canada si apprezza la collaborazione”.

Il ruolo dei social media come strumento di aggregazione sociale ha sostituito quello che ha avuto, e che ha ancora, il Centro Italiano per generazioni di immigrati, ma “la nuova ondata” preferisce i social

come Italians in Vancouver oppure Comunità italiana a Vancouver per scambiarsi informazioni e organizzare gruppi. I ragazzi raramente mettono piede al Centro e meno ancora frequentano le associazioni regionali che rivestono invece tanta importanza per i “vecchi” italo-canadesi. Qualcuno non ha proprio tempo per la vita comunitaria, come il Dr. Vincenzo Pecunia, siciliano di Marsala, professore associato alla School of Sustainable Energy Engineering della Simon Fraser University. Pecunia ha un dottorato di ricerca alla University of Cambridge; appena quarantenne, è considerato un’autorità internazionale nel suo campo. Vive a Vancouver dal novembre 2021 con la moglie Yting Pang, docente di architettura, attirato dalla maggiore mobilità professionale. Afferma infatti: “L’Italia potrebbe fare di meglio per essere più competitiva. Negli ultimi 14 anni ho studiato e lavorato all’estero, in Inghilterra, in Cina. Vancouver is not known as a place for strengthening friendships or having fun, and many new arrivals say the same. Nico Rana thinks differently. He is a dance instructor and a professional dancer of Latin American rhythms. “I’m a salsero,” he says with pride. “I have been able to create many friendships with people from all cultures. The ethnic and cultural diversity that I have found here helps to broaden my horizons.” Rana is 42 and has lived in Vancouver since 2018. He is from Bisceglie, where he worked as an electrician at his family’s company. He quickly found employment in his field right away and is very satisfied: “There is much more opportunity and respect. Work is very professional, by the book. I don’t know many other Italians, and for what concerns social media, they are a good springboard but lack true human warmth. I feel included. I have my uncle and aunt, who immigrated here long ago, and I want to stay. I am a realist, but I have many dreams and here they can come true.”

Two days after architect Alberto Bicego accepted a friend’s invitation to take a relaxing vacation in Vancouver, he called his wife and said: “Cinzia, I’m at home here.” That was how they decided to move to Canada nine years ago. For Bicego, who had already built a prominent career as an architect, it was easy to start over with the Studio Openspace Architecture and expand his network of international clients. He recently received the Red Dot Design Award in Germany. Cinzia Candela Bicego, founder of Voice and Wellness, is an actress and voice actress with extensive experience in Italy. At first, she felt a little wary, particularly because her limited English made it difficult for her to start her business. She studied with great tenacity, and she explains: “At a certain point, I began to do volunteer work for some organizations that support women and immigrants. It was through this that I gained a better understanding of Canadian society, appreciated the welcoming culture and build new contacts and rediscover my enthusiasm.”

La reputazione di Vancouver non è delle migliori né per stringere amicizie né per divertirsi, e molti nuovi arrivati lo confermano. Nico Rana la pensa diversamente. È un maestro di danza e un ballerino professionista di ritmi latino-americani. “Sono un salsero,” dice con orgoglio “ho potuto stringere moltissime amicizie, con gente di tutte le culture. La diversità etnica e culturale che ho trovato qui aiuta ad aprire la mente, a maturare”. Rana ha 42 anni e vive a Vancouver dal 2018.

Viene da Bisceglie dove lavorava come elettricista nella ditta di famiglia. Ha subito trovato impiego nel ramo ed è molto soddisfatto: “Ci sono molte più opportunità e rispetto, si lavora in modo professionale, ‘by the book’. Non conosco molti altri italiani, e quanto ai social media sono un bel trampolino di lancio ma manca il vero calore umano. Mi sento ben inserito, ho i miei zii immigrati da tantissimi anni e voglio restare. Sono realista, ma ho molti sogni e qui possono avverarsi”.

Quando l’architetto Alberto Bicego accettò l’invito di un amico a fare una vacanza-distrazione a Vancouver, dopo neppure due giorni telefonò alla moglie dicendo: “Cinzia, qui sono a casa”. Fu così che i Bicego decisero di trasferirsi in Canada nove anni fa. Per Bicego, che già aveva costruito una carriera importante come architetto, fu semplice ricominciare prima con lo studio Openspace Architecture, poi espandendo la propria rete di clienti internazionali tanto che recentemente ha ricevuto il Red Dot Design Award in Germania. Vancouver Italian Community to share information and organize groups. Young people rarely set foot in the Centro and go even less to the regional associations that are so important for the “old” Italian-Canadians.

Some have no time for community life, such as Dr. Vincenzo Pecunia, a Sicilian from Marsala who is an associate professor at the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering at Simon Fraser University. Pecunia holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge. At 40 years old, he is considered an international authority in his field. He has lived in Vancouver since November 2021 with his wife Yting Pang, a professor of architecture, because there is more professional mobility. In fact, he states: “Italy could do better in order to be more competitive. During these last 14 years, I have studied and worked abroad in England and in China. In Italy, integration can be more difficult for newcomers. I have very few contacts with other Italians, but I have established relationships and initiatives with the academic community, professional associations, our general consulate and the Italian Embassy in Ottawa. We are working together on a project.”

T

he Right Honourable Brian Mulroney passed away February 29, 2024, leaving a rich legacy punctuated by his intellect, strategy and good humour. Constitutional, Indigenous and trade issues, took up much of his focus. What may be less known is the contribution that he made to the healing of the collective soul of the ItalianCanadian community for the wrongs it suffered during the Second World War. On September 3, 1939, the Government of Canada issued the Defence of Canada Regulations along with the creation of a class of “enemy aliens” (foreign nationals but also many Canadian citizens). Such designation allowed the curtailment of civil rights, the suspension of civil liberties, and the confiscation of property.

The regulations affected a great many, among them Italian-Canadians who, in the 1941 census of Canada, included 112,625 individuals, more than 90% of whom were born or naturalized Canadians. This did not stop the authorities from denying them basic civil rights.

Italian-Canadians became the target of government, police and public attacks. The results were job losses, separation from families, vandalized homes and traumatized children often attacked on their way to and from school. Their classification as “enemy aliens” imposed many restrictions as to where they could go and what work they could do. Every

Ciò che può risultare meno noto è il suo contributo alla guarigione dell’animo ferito della comunità italo-canadese per i torti subiti durante la Seconda guerra mondiale.

Il 3 settembre 1939, il Governo del Canada emanò il Regolamento di Difesa del Canada, unitamente alla creazione della categoria di “stranieri nemici” (cittadini stranieri ma anche molti cittadini canadesi). Tale designazione portò alla riduzione dei diritti civili, alla sospensione delle libertà civili e alla confisca delle proprietà.

Il regolamento colpiva moltissimi, tra cui gli italo-canadesi che secondo un censimento del 1941 contavano 112.625 individui, di cui oltre il 90% erano nati in Canada o ne avevano acquisito la cittadinanza. Ciò non precluse alle autorità di negar loro i diritti civili di base.

Gli italo-canadesi divennero bersaglio del governo, della polizia e di attacchi pubblici. Ne risultarono licenziamenti, separazioni dalle famiglie, case vandalizzate e bambini traumatizzati spesso presi di mira al ritorno da scuola. La classificazione di “stranieri nemici” impose molte restrizioni riguardo ai luoghi che potevano frequentare o ai lavori che potevano svolgere. month, they had to report to the Registrar of Enemy Aliens for questioning. Their lives were dramatically and indelibly altered for the worse.

It has been documented that on the day the measures went into effect, almost 1,000 agents were mandated to execute without warrant, searches and arrests within the Italian-Canadian community.

Individuals were rounded up by authorities pursuant to a federal Order-in-Council which called for “the registration of enemy aliens […] to all persons of German or Italian racial origins who have become naturalized British subjects since September 1, 1929.” Once at police headquarters, they were fingerprinted, photographed and held temporarily in local jails. Some were released while others were scheduled for internment.

Italian-Canadians were on the whole law-abiding residents.

Yet they were branded “enemy aliens” and treated harshly in flagrant disregard of their civil rights.

Four internment camps were established for the purpose: one in Petawawa, Ontario; one on St. Helen’s Island, Quebec; two in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Regardless of the exact number of Italian-Canadians interned, it is a fact that not one internee was ever charged with any crime or act of disloyalty to Canada.

They were granted no right to a fair hearing nor to seek legal counsel. They were at first denied any contact with their families who were frantic about their disappearance.

Internment was at the discretion of the arresting authorities.

The recorded internees, 87% of whom were Canadian citizens, were held for periods ranging up to three years. No motivation was offered; no defense possible; no information released except after the internment was complete and, even then, official facts were scarce.

In the interim, their families were forced to live in poverty since work was not available to them, forcing them to sell their homes and what assets they had at bargain prices just to survive.

When release finally came, the human and financial costs to Canadians of Italian origin and to Canada were enormous.

For years, the cause of redress went unheeded. Then in January 1990, as President of the National Congress of Italian Canadians (NCIC), I filed a brief with the Federal Government entitled A National Shame, which documented this sad history of our country and the horrors inflicted on a whole generation of Canadians of Italian origin. Joining in support were the Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association (CIBPA) through its President, Dan La Caprara and Senator Con Di Nino.

On November 4, 1990, while I hosted the annual dinner of the NCIC and with participation of the La Caprara and Senator Di Nino, Prime Minister Mulroney and his wife, Mila, surprised us with a visit.

Seated at the principal table across from the prime minister, I quickly arranged for a talk by Julius Molinaro a Professor Emeritus of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto, who at 16 had enrolled in a language course to learn the birth language of his parents but had, instead, been interned.

Right after, Mulroney rose to speak and concluded his speech with the following words: “On behalf of the government and people of Canada, I offer a full and unqualified apology for the wrongs done to our fellow Canadians of Italian origin during World War II.” The audience instantly rose to deliver loud and unanimous applause as many wept.

As I turned to my old professor, Julius Molinaro, I saw him weeping, too. The 16-year-old boy, who had suffered so much in silence for so long, was finally made whole and a community rejoiced!

Una volta portati nella stazione della polizia, gli venivano prese le impronte digitali, venivano schedati e trattenuti temporaneamente nelle prigioni locali. Alcuni furono rilasciati, per altri fu previsto l’internamento.

Gli italo-canadesi erano nel complesso cittadini rispettosi della legge. Tuttavia, vennero etichettati come “stranieri nemici” e trattati duramente con ovvia violazione dei loro diritti civili.

Vennero organizzati a tale scopo quattro campi di internamento: uno a Petawawa, Ontario; uno sull’isola di Sant’Elena, Quebec; due a Fredericton, Nuovo Brunswick.

A prescindere dal numero esatto di italo-canadesi internati, è appurato che nessuno di loro fu mai accusato di un crimine o di slealtà verso il Canada.

Non gli fu concesso il diritto a un processo equo né a una difesa legale. All’inizio, gli fu negato qualunque contatto con i familiari, i quali erano affranti per via della loro scomparsa.

L’internamento era a discrezione delle autorità che effettuavano gli arresti. Gli internati registrati, l’87% dei quali erano cittadini canadesi, furono trattenuti fino a tre anni. Non venne offerta alcuna spiegazione; impossibile difendersi; non vennero rilasciate informazioni se non una volta terminato l’internamento quando, anche a quel punto, le evidenze ufficiali rimasero scarse.

Nel frattempo, le loro famiglie furono costrette a vivere in povertà visto che non potevano lavorare, obbligate quindi a vendere case e beni a prezzi irrisori per riuscire a sopravvivere. Quando il tutto infine terminò, i costi umani ed economici per i canadesi di origini italiane furono enormi.

Per anni, la richiesta di risarcimento rimase inascoltata. Poi, a gennaio del 1990, in qualità di Presidente del Congresso Nazionale degli Italo-Canadesi (NCIC), presentai una relazione al governo federale intitolata Una vergogna nazionale, che documentava questa storia triste del nostro paese e gli orrori inflitti a una generazione intera di canadesi di origini italiane. Si unì in sostegno l’Associazione ItaloCanadese delle Imprese e dei Professionisti (CIBPA) attraverso il suo presidente, Dan La Caprara e il Senatore Con Di Nino.

Il 4 novembre 1990, durante l’annuale cena del NCIC con la partecipazione di La Caprara e del senatore Di Nino, il Primo ministro Mulroney e sua moglie, Mila, ci sorpresero con la loro presenza.

Seduta al tavolo principale proprio di fronte a quello del primo ministro, organizzai su due piedi un discorso per Julius Molinaro, professore emerito di italianistica dell’Università di Toronto, il quale a 16 anni si era iscritto a un corso di lingua per imparare quella dei suoi genitori ma che, però, era finito internato.

Subito dopo, Mulroney si alzò per parlare e concluse il suo discorso con queste parole: “A nome del governo e del popolo canadese, offro le mie più sentite e incondizionate scuse per i torti fatti ai nostri compatrioti canadesi di origini italiane durante la Seconda guerra mondiale”.

Il pubblico si alzò subito in piedi, con molti che piangevano, per applaudire all’unisono.

Voltandomi verso il mio vecchio professore, Julius Molinaro, mi accorsi che piangeva anche lui. Il sedicenne che aveva sofferto tantissimo in silenzio per così tanto tempo aveva finalmente ricevuto conforto, mentre la comunità tutta si rallegrava!

Spaghetti alle vongole. It’s an absolute must whenever I see it on a menu. What’s an Italian tradition you want to carry on? Sunday lunch/dinner. There’s nothing better than having a pasta Sunday with family and friends, and telling stories of the good old days with a soccer game on in the background.

What advice would you give 5-year-old you? Focus on doing whatever makes you happy and the rest will fall into place. Who are you named after? I’m not named after anyone specifically but my mom had a crush on a boy in her elementary school named Adriano and she liked the name ever since.

Favourite Italian expression and why: “Cosi è la vita.” I understand the expression as being that life is so unpredictable and you can’t control everything despite wanting to. So, just take everything as it comes the best you can. What do you want your legacy to be? To be remembered as someone dependable, and a good person that had a positive impact on people.

What makes you most proud to be Italian-Canadian? I think we’re very lucky to be Italian-Canadian as we have the best of the “old” and “new” worlds. We were born into a culture having traditional family values with an emphasis placed on honesty and hard work. Thanks to the sacrifices of our grandparents, we were also able to grow up in a modern country where these same values help us achieve whatever we put our minds to. It was also very cool to grow up in a community where most of the people we went to school with, played sports with, worked with, etc. had similar backgrounds and similar experiences.

I’m named after my Nonna Elena, which is my middle name Favourite Italian expression and why: Nonno used to always say, “Chi si accotenta, gode.” It means “be happy with what you have”. It’s an optimistic outlook on life that reminds me to be grateful for the little things, and that life is a blessing. What do you want your legacy to be? I want to be remembered for making a difference in the world, giving back to my community and making my loved ones laugh every day. I want to work

hard and live every day to the fullest. What makes you most proud to be Italian-Canadian? I’m proud to be part of a hardworking collective of people that are driven by passion, respect and love. Whether it’s your nonna, zio or next-door neighbour, you can always count on an Italian to share advice or lend a hand—we rely on one another and help anyone that needs it. Being unapologetically yourself is my favourite thing about being Italian.

There’s too many to list! If I had to choose one, it would be to grow my own food. I’d probably ask him for advice because he’s living his best life! But most likely: to be more patient. Not everything needs to be done quickly. Good things will come in time. Favourite Italian expression and why: “Buon appetito.” We would always hear this before every meal. It brings a sense of closeness and is a reminder of the delicious homemade dishes that brought my family together. What do you want your legacy to be? I’d like to be remembered as a great father.

With my work schedule, I’m able to spend a lot of extra time with my twin boys Anthony and Lorenzo. Spending time with my kids and wife, Andrea, is my number one priority. I’ll continue to be a strong figure in their life that they can trust and rely on. What makes you most proud to be Italian-Canadian? The history. So many Italians have come to Canada with the hope of creating a better life for their family and have succeeded. I’m proud to be a part of that history. Knowing my nonni left everything behind to help build and shape the Italian-Canadian community we know and love today is a special feeling.

Fortunately though, there are photos of two-year-old to six-year-old me in family albums with an unmistakable look of joy during summer picnics at the falls with extended family. Maybe that’s why I love accompanying people who have never been before just to see their stupor and ultimate joy from witnessing something so magnificent.

The excitement starts with the initial views from the car.

As you approach them by foot, that inevitable mist that comes off of the thundering surge of water both welcomes and refreshes you on a hot summer day. (Okay, it makes your hair frizzy too—but it is worth it!) You draw closer to the crowds and to claim your spot at the railing to get the best vantage point; it’s the only barrier between you and this roaring sound of the crystal-clear water gushing into a whooshing vortex below. It is fascinating, hypnotic and terrifying all at the same time.

ebbene ci sia stata innumerevoli volte, c’è qualcosa di speciale nell’assistere alla potenza delle cascate del Niagara che puntualmente stupisce. Nel tentativo di cogliere lo spettacolo nella sua interezza, tutti e cinque i sensi vengono travolti dalla loro maestosità.

Non ricordo quando ci sono andata la prima volta. Per fortuna, però, ci sono foto di me a due e a sei anni negli album di famiglia con un’inconfondibile espressione di gioia durante i picnic di famiglia alle cascate. Magari è per questo che adoro accompagnarci persone che non ci sono mai state prima, potendo così assistere al loro stupore e gioia immensi dinnanzi a qualcosa di tanto strabiliante.

L’entusiasmo comincia già quando si scorgono inizialmente dalla macchina. Man mano che ci si avvicina a piedi, ad accoglierci e a rinfrescarci in una calda giornata estiva c’è l’immancabile nebulizzazione proveniente da quella marea d’acqua tonante. (Ok, rende anche i capelli crespi: ma ne vale la pena!). Ci si avvicina alla folla per reclamare un posticino vicino alla ringhiera e raggiungere il miglior punto d’osservazione; è l’unica barriera a separarci dal ruggente scroscio d’acqua cristallina che si trasforma in basso in un vortice vertiginoso. È nel contempo affascinate, ipnotico e terrificante.

Dati gli oltre 13 milioni di visitatori ogni anno, do per scontato che la maggior parte di voi abbia visitato le Cascate del Niagara almeno una volta. Parlando di turismo, si tratta della Venezia dell’Ontario, con frotte di turisti che fanno a gara per coglierne uno scorcio e farsi una

to assume most of you have visited Niagara Falls at least once.

When it comes to tourism, it’s Ontario’s version of Venice, with throngs of tourists all vying to catch a glimpse while taking multiple group shots or selfies to commemorate the landmark moment.

Our fascination with waterfalls (big or small) led me to dedicate this summer’s travel section to the top falls in Canada and Italy.

Typically, we cover only Italian destinations, especially during peak travel months like July and August. However, Niagara Falls is the mothership of falls and for once, even a self-professed Italophile like me has to admit that Canada trumps Italy on this one. (Did I really just admit that?)

More importantly, the Niagara region is a big part of the Italian-Canadian experience, especially during the summer. Historically, when droves of Italians emigrated here postwar during the ‘50s and ‘60s, visiting the falls was like a rite of passage. For Italians who come to Ontario and Quebec on holiday, or for the fresh young Italians who decide to move here, it is without fail one of the first places they visit.

As a first-generation Canadian, I continued my summer Niagara tradition as a young adult. I went there with friends either for the day or spent weekends between the falls and Niagaraon-the-Lake. Even though I ventured out every year, the food situation was always somewhat disappointing, other than buying amazing fresh fruit and corn off the highway. I began to understand why my parents always packed a picnic when we went there in the early years.

Over time though, there has been a radical shift in the hospitality landscape. It has evolved and has become a world-class destination. From restaurants, to wineries and hotels, this is not the Niagara I grew up with—it is better! I attribute a lot of this evolution to Italian-Canadians who love and have invested in the area to make it the best it could be.

In this issue, we travel to charming Niagara-on-the-Lake and talk to key Italian-Canadians who have upped (and continue to refine) the Niagara experience. My two-day spa getaway offered an unparalleled gastronomy and viticulture coupled with first-rate soothing treatments. Then travel to Italy with contributor Maureen Littlejohn who reveals the top five falls there. The perfect reprieve for when Italian beaches get too crowded, try switching things up and visit some water falls to refresh and recalibrate.

Il nostro fascino per le cascate (grandi o piccole) mi ha portato a dedicare la sezione viaggi di quest’estate alle più belle cascate del Canada e d’Italia. Di solito, ci occupiamo solo di destinazioni italiane, soprattutto durante i mesi di alta stagione, luglio e agosto.

Tuttavia, quelle del Niagara sono le cascate per eccellenza e per una volta, persino un’italofila autoproclamata come me deve ammettere che il Canada batte l’Italia in questo caso. (L’ho ammesso veramente?)

Ciò che più conta, la regione del Niagara è una fetta importante dell’esperienza italo-canadese, soprattutto in estate. Storicamente, quando frotte di italiani emigrarono qui nel dopoguerra, negli anni ’50 e ’60, visitare le cascate era una sorta di rito di passaggio. Per gli italiani che vengono in Ontario e in Quebec in vacanza, o per i giovani italiani che decidono di trasferirsi qui, si tratta senza dubbio di una delle prime località da visitare.

Canadese di prima generazione, ho portato avanti la tradizione estiva di visitare Niagara fino a quando sono diventata una giovane adulta. Con i miei amici ci ho trascorso, tra le cascate e Niagaraon-the-Lake, una giornata o fine settimana. Sebbene ci andassi ogni anno, la situazione gastronomica era sempre in qualche modo deludente, fatta eccezione per l’acquisto di frutta fresca squisita o pannocchie appena usciti dall’autostrada. Cominciai a capire perché i miei genitori si portavano sempre un cestino da picnic quando ci andavamo durante i primi anni.

Col tempo però, c’è stato un cambio radicale nel panorama dell’accoglienza. La regione si è adesso evoluta diventando una destinazione di prima categoria. Dai ristoranti alle cantine vinicole agli hotel, non è più la Niagara in cui sono cresciuta; è meglio! Attribuisco molto di questa evoluzione agli italo-canadesi che la amano e hanno investito in questa zona per offrirne il meglio.

In quest’uscita, viaggeremo nell’affascinante Niagara-on-theLake e faremo due chiacchiere con italo-canadesi di spicco che hanno migliorato (e continuano a farlo) l’esperienza nella regione di Niagara. La mia fuga di due giorni in un centro benessere mi ha offerto un’esperienza enogastronomica senza pari, oltre ai trattamenti di bellezza di primo livello. Poi, visitate l’Italia con la collaboratrice Maureen Littlejohn che vi rivelerà quali sono le cinque migliori cascate. Pausa perfetta per quando le spiagge italiane si fanno troppo affollate, provate a cambiare visitando qualche cascata, per rinfrescarvi e ricalibrarvi.

trip to Niagara offers something for everyone.

Thrill-seekers can enjoy ziplining over the Niagara River or ride a glass elevator down from the riverside platform at the base of the roaring falls to get a closer view.

Gamblers may try their luck at the casino, and who doesn’t want to share at least one meal with a view of the spectacular falls? ,m at Fallsview Restaurant in 2016 knowing the draw of Italian cuisine with that unbeatable view is a definite crowd-pleaser.

Just 25 kilometres away though, you enter quite a different world. Even during the busy summer season, it is a calmer, more elegant setting that appeals to theatre-goers, wine enthusiasts, foodies, cyclists and generally anyone who has a penchant for the good life.

The charming, picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of my favourite Ontario getaways. After a recent visit at 124 on Queen Hotel and Spa, add a sumptuous peaceful retreat, chockfull of luxuriating spa treatments, delicious farm-to-table meals and impeccable wines produced in the region’s over 50 wineries to the already robust list of reasons why you should head out there this summer.

The surprises start at the door. The exterior of the revamped upscale hotel dons the original red brick facade, which aligns with the Queen Anne style architecture of the main strip. Inside, this modern boutique hotel in rich shades of cobalt blue, dove grey and gold draw you in and instantly signal that you’re about to experience something completely different.

Rome, however, wasn’t built in a day.

Purchased in 2013, co-owners, David Jones and Nick Capasso explain: “When we first started, it was still called Victorian Villas.” With 12 years of expansion efforts, including the purchase of six adjacent heritage properties all flowing with the existing buildings, the newly named 124 on Queen now offers a total of 72 guestrooms, from single to full-on apartments. A large property, it houses a 12,000 square-foot state-of-the-art Nordic spa, inspired by the ancient art of Roman bathing. The star attraction features an expansive Wellness Hydrotherapy Circuit. From hot plunge pool to sensory shower, cedar-lined sauna, cool plunge pool and eucalyptus steam room, the circuit concludes with a snow cave from Austria.

After a therapeutic morning in the regenerative hydrotherapy circuit, book a massage or facial in one of the 12 luxurious treatment rooms. Be prepared to be dazzled by the culinary mastery of longtime farm-to-table restaurant, Treadwell Cuisine. A must-try is their succulent four-course dinner tasting menu with somme-

In 12 anni di lavori, tra cui l’acquisto di sei proprietà storiche adiacenti tutte in linea con gli edifici esistenti, il neobattezzato, offre adesso 72 camere in totale, da singole ad appartamenti veri e propri. La grande struttura ospita una spa nordica all’avanguardia di 1.100 metri quadrati, che si ispira alle antiche terme romane. Il pezzo forte è rappresentato da un enorme percorso benessere di idroterapia. Passando dalla vasca di acqua calda alla doccia emozionale, alla sauna di cedro, alla vasca di acqua fredda e la stanza di vapore, il percorso si conclude con una grotta austriaca di neve.

Dopo una mattinata terapeutica attraverso il percorso rigenerante di idroterapia, prenotate un massaggio o un trattamento viso in una delle 12 sale di lusso. Infine, la King Signature suite, l’ultima arrivata e completata nel 2022, sarà il posto perfetto in cui ritirarsi nel postcoccola. Situate al piano terra, le suddette suite benessere offrono un’oasi all’esterno, ognuna delle quali si affaccia su un cortile idilliaco fatto di placide fontane d’acqua, giardini ed aree private accoglienti con sedute comode e braci in cui concedersi un bel libro o un bel rosé per l’aperitivo nel patio.

lier-led wine pairings. The 900-bottle wine cellar is a point of pride for sommelier James Treadwell. This is where you can indulge in the bounty of the region’s artisanal agriculture and prolific wine production.

A stay at 124 on Queen Hotel and Spa promises a restful, indulgent and restorative experience for guests who need a reprieve from busy city life. There were many moments that I felt like I was at a spa destination somewhere in Europe. It was interesting to eventually find out both co-owners, Jones and Capasso, had zero hospitality industry experience when they teamed up. They started from scratch and relied on their extensive global travels to cherry-pick what they liked most and brought it to this unique hotel.

Just across from this jewel, is the latest Two Sisters’ restaurant, The 11th Post on Queen, which opened last year. I caught up with the sisters Melissa Marotta-Paolicelli and Angela Marotta to find out about this welcome addition to the Niagara-on-theLake main street and was delighted to hear about their new Eagle Stone winery in the works, slated to launch in 2025.

Serving exclusively Two Sisters’ wines, this prime location is named after their proprietary blend, Eleventh Post. Inside, the design combines Art Deco elements with a French bistro feel. Warm caramel wood finished with antique brass adds a sophisticated detail. Custom-made light fixtures crown the dining and bar area where Marotta-Paolicelli proudly points to the ceiling, stating: “The wood beams hail from the 1800s. They were salvaged and repurposed from the original structure.” Take a seat inside on one of the blue leather banquettes, at a table,

Sono stati molti i momenti in cui mi sono sentita di essere in un centro benessere di qualche località europea. È stato interessante scoprire alla fine che nessuno dei due comproprietari, Jones e Capasso, avessero esperienza nel settore alberghiero prima di mettersi in società. Sono partiti da zero, facendo affidamento sulle molte esperienze di viaggi all’estero per selezionare quello che gli piaceva di più e che volevano offrire nel proprio hotel boutique.

Proprio di fronte a questo gioiello si trova il nuovissimo ristorante della Two Sisters, The 11th Post on Queen, aperto l’anno scorso. Mi sono aggiornata con le sorelle Melissa Marotta-Paolicelli e Angela Marotta per saperne di più su quest’ultima aggiunta al viale principale di Niagara-on-the-Lake ed è stato molto bello scoprire della loro nuova cantina in progettazione, Eagle Stone, la cui apertura è prevista per il 2025.

Questo eccellente locale, in cui si servono esclusivamente vini della Two Sisters, prende il nome dalla loro miscela esclusiva, Eleventh Post. “We wanted to create a restaurant that is completely different from our Italian-inspired Kitchen76 at Two Sisters Vineyards. Our goal was to marry tried-and-true classic dishes that we love to make with the highest standards in ingredients, and graceful service with a welcoming, sophisticated atmosphere.”

Made in-house and from scratch, Chef Justin Lesso creates elevated comfort dishes that never disappoint. Popular orders are the burger (my favourite), nachos topped with house smoked BBQ beef brisket and the smoked salmon. “He regularly creates features to keep things exciting and always has a soup feature available. We call Chef Lesso the soup master.”

Ever since they opened their winery in 2007, their love for the Niagara region has grown. “Niagara-on-the-Lake is a very special place and we feel so blessed to be able to do what we love here with such an incredible and dedicated team. With each venture, we aim to not only educate guests and consumers but also to inspire them to explore, taste, and experience all that Niagara has to offer.”

Recently named “One of the most beautiful small towns in the world” by Conde Nast Traveler, Marotta-Paolicelli emphasizes their commitment to maintaining the charm and authenticity of the town and its surroundings. “We focus our practices on sustainable approaches that allow us to consistently produce ultra-premium harvests and allow the best of the vineyard and grapes to shine.”

The sisters aren’t ones to rest on their laurels as they are busily working on their second winery. “Our experience has shown an increased demand in the sale of premium wines with an expectation of a curated experience to support the upper tier level of wines produced. At Stone Eagle, we will be focusing on a more elevated experience of wine tasting that will incorporate food to enhance it all.”

Il nostro obiettivo era quello di coniugare piatti collaudati che ci piace preparare, con ingredienti di massima qualità, il tutto offrendo un servizio elegante in un’atmosfera accogliente e sofisticata”.

Il cuoco Justin Lesso crea da zero piatti tradizionali con un tocco in più che non deludono mai. I pezzi forte sono l’hamburger (il mio piatto preferito), i nachos ricoperti da una punta di petto di manzo affumicato al barbecue e il salmone affumicato. “Crea puntualmente piatti per mantenere il menu accattivante e c’è sempre una zuppa. Chiamiamo il cuoco Lesso il maestro della zuppa”.

Sin dall’inaugurazione della loro cantina avvenuta nel 2007, il loro amore per la regione di Niagara è cresciuto. “Niagara-on-the-Lake è un posto davvero speciale e ci consideriamo molto fortunate di poter far qui ciò che ci piace con una squadra incredibile e dedicata. Ad ogni nuova avventura, il nostro obiettivo – oltre a quello di far conoscere qualcosa ai nostri clienti e consumatori – è anche quello di ispirarli a esplorare, gustare e provare tutto ciò che Niagara ha da offrire”.

Da poco nominato “Uno dei paesini più belli al mondo” da Conde Nast Traveler, Marotta-Paolicelli sottolinea il loro impegno a mantenere il fascino e l’autenticità del paesino e dei suoi dintorni.

“Ci incentriamo su un approccio sostenibile che ci consenta di produrre raccolti di ottima qualità e faccia risplendere sia le vigne che le nostre uve”.

Le sorelle non amano adagiarsi sugli allori ed è per questo che sono impegnate a lavorare alla loro seconda cantina. “La nostra esperienza evidenzia una richiesta crescente nella vendita di vini pregiati unitamente all’aspettativa di un’esperienza ben curata

Private tasting rooms, a retail wine shop and an event space that accommodates up to 325 guests are just a few of the offerings. The decision to name this new winery Stone Eagle after their ultra-premium wine collection has an interesting narrative. Their father spotted a statue of an eagle while driving in the Dolomites, where eagles are known to thrive. Made of solid stone and taking two years to make, he tracked down the artist and commissioned him to create an identical one facing the opposite direction. “It felt only fitting to call the wine [and their second winery] Stone Eagle, as it represents the bold dedication to excellence in winemaking.”

The Niagara-on-the-Lake experience is a very different one from the times we packed a picnic thanks to the contribution of entrepreneurs who consistently improve the offerings. “We feel that as Italians, it is in our blood to have the highest of standards for food and wine. It came very naturally for us to know what we wanted to achieve for both our restaurants, as we too would have difficulty finding places to eat in the past,” says Marotta-Paolicelli.

Il padre ha visto una statua di un’aquila mentre si trovava sulle Dolomiti, dove le aquile prolificano. Per risalire all’artista e commissionargliene una identica in pietra solida ma rivolta nella direzione opposta gli ci sono voluti due anni. “Ci è sembrato assolutamente logico chiamare il vino [e la loro seconda cantina] Stone Eagle, in quanto rappresentativo dell’audace dedizione verso una vinificazione d’eccellenza”.

L’esperienza a Niagara-on-the-Lake è molto diversa da quella di quando preparavamo il cestino per il picnic, grazie al contributo di imprenditori che costantemente ne migliorano l’offerta. “Sentiamo che, essendo italiani, gli standard più alti nell’enogastronomia ce li abbiamo nel DNA. Ci è venuto naturale sapere cosa volessimo raggiungere con entrambi i ristoranti, dato che noi stesse, in passato, avevamo difficoltà a trovare posti in cui mangiare” sostiene Marotta-Policelli.

A manmade wonder Cascata delle Marmore, or Marmore Falls, is located in Valnerina in the province of Terni, Umbria. It jets down a tiered stone structure built by the Romans in 271 BC. At 165 metres tall, it is the largest structure of its kind in the world, and the highest waterfall in Europe. There are three jumps that the water flows over. You can enter at a lower or upper lookout point. The falls can be turned on and off for hydroelectric power to be generated, so you don’t want to be there when they are off. Check the

he beauty of Italy’s waterfalls has driven tourists to traverse winding mountain paths and perch on precarious rocky ledges for a glimpse of splashing white cascades.

Go to the north of the country and you’ll find the tallest manmade waterfall in the world, constructed by the Romans. The power and allure of other Italian cascades have inspired the writings of many famous authors including Dante Alighieri, Thomas Mann and poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. Renaissance artist, scientist and all-around genius Leonardo da Vinci even wrote about one.

Many of these waterfalls can be found in protected areas such as national parks that are open year-round and charge admission. Summer is usually the high season for visits. Some are easy to access, while others take some determined hiking.

Here’s a summary of our top five waterfalls in Italy that are worth seeking out.

Da Vinci’s delight In the province of Sondrio, in Lombardy, Acquafraggia Falls find their source in a seasonal stream that begins at Pizzo del Lago at the height of 3050 metres. It runs through two glacial valleys and turns into a series of waterfalls immortalized in Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus, a 12-volume set of his drawings and writings. Protected within a park since 1983, the falls can be seen from a trail. The majestic Chiavenna Valley can also be admired from panoramic terraces along the trail.

Plus, several hiking trails have the falls as their starting point. In 1984, the waterfalls were declared a natural monument by the region of Lombardy.

From Prehistoric to Medieval Attracting up to 50,000 visitors a year, the Molina Waterfalls Park is within the larger regional park of the Lessini Mountains. Southeast of the medieval mill town of Molin in the region of Veneto, 30 minutes from Verona, the falls can only be accessed by a footpath. Passing through the village, the trail leads to the entrance of the protected area, filled with woods, streams and meadows. The park is also of interest because it holds evidence of Neanderthal habitation more than 100,000 years ago, as well as early Homo Sapiens. The Fumane Cave, a few kilometres from Molina, is where their traces have been found and it is an important prehistoric study site today.

Dalla Preistoria al Medioevo Attrazione per oltre 50.000 visitatori all’anno, il Parco delle Cascate di Molina si trova nell’ancor più ampio parco regionale dei Monti Lessini. Casting a magic spell In the region of Trento, Varone Waterfall Cave Park can be found in Tenno, three kilometres from the resort town of Riva del Garda on Lake Garda. The park was inaugurated in 1874 with special guest Prince Nicolas of Montenegro, who was on holiday on Lake Garda at the time. Franz Joseph I, emperor of Austria and king of Lombardy-Veneto, often visited with his entire imperial court and Italian Prince Umberto II visited in 1926. Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann, impressed with the falls, wrote about them in his 1924 novel The Magic Mountain. The park is open year-round; admission tickets can be bought on-site. Be warned, August is high season and wait times to get in can be long.

Dante’s divine inspiration The Acquacheta is a stream with its origin in the Tuscan Apennines in the province of Florence. Three big waterfalls comprise the cascade, which is located within the National Park of Casentino Forests, Monti Falterona and Campigna. Mesmerizing those who have beheld it over the centuries, Aquacheta waterfall takes centre stage in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, “Song XVI” of the Inferno. The falls also inspired poet Gabriele D’Annunzio so much so that after a visit to see them, he signed his name, “The man of the whirlwind and water.” The only way to get to the 65-metre waterfall is by foot. It takes two to three hours on a nature path that starts in San Benedetto.

Eggplant Rigatoni with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Ricotta

Rigatoni alle melanzane con pomodori secchi e ricotta

ow can one pass up a hot creamy plate of pasta? Loaded with veggies and cheese, this dish is an easy weeknight meal and a fantastic alternative to classic tomato sauce.

The sautéed eggplant and sun-dried tomatoes coated with creamy ricotta melt into the tomato sauce with just the right balance of flavour and texture. Simplicity at its finest.

ome si può rinunciare a un piatto di pasta calda e cremosa? Ricco di verdure e formaggio, questo piatto è una cena facile da preparare in settimana e una fantastica alternativa al classico sugo di pomodoro.

Le melanzane saltate in padella e i pomodori secchi, ricoperti da una crema di ricotta, si fondono con la salsa di pomodoro con il giusto equilibrio di sapore e consistenza. È la semplicità al suo meglio.

is evenly coated. Cook for another minute or so to blend all the flavours. Salt to taste. Use sparingly as the degorged eggplant and sun-dried tomatoes are already salty. Add reserved pasta water to adjust the sauce’s thickness if needed.

Dolce & Santella (545 Boulevard des Laurentides, Laval) It’s not in Montreal, but you’ll be missing out if you don’t try Dolce & Santella’s rich gelato. Having studied at Artico Scuola di Gelateria in Milan, Marco Santella serves up some of the most authentic gelato in town, nailing the flavours and texture. The product, service and atmosphere show a deep respect for the craft and unparalleled attention to detail. Their artisanal gelati are all-natural and follow strict recipes approved by Santella’s professor, who they flew in when they first opened in 2019.

With 18 to 24 fresh flavours available at all times, you can’t go wrong with any combo. My favourite is a scoop of amarena and mascarpone & pistachio. I felt very validated in my go-to choice when Colette Raymond, Santella’s mom, recommended the same for first-time customers. She also suggests their gianduja. Go for gelato that lives up to Italy’s gelaterie, including vegan options, and to see the magic happen in their laboratory, where the masters are at work.

Dolce & Santella Non si trova a Montreal, ma sarebbe un peccato non provare il gelato squisito di Dolce & Santella. Dopo aver frequentato la Artico Scuola di Gelateria di Milano, Marco Santella serve un gelato dal gusto e della consistenza impeccabili, uno dei migliori in città. Il prodotto, il servizio e l’atmosfera evidenziano un profondo rispetto delle tecniche artigianali e un’attenzione al dettaglio senza pari. I loro gelati artigianali sono completamente naturali e seguono le ricette rigorose approvate dal professor Santella, invitato in Canada in occasione della loro apertura nel 2019.

Tra i 18-24 gusti freschi sempre disponibili, nessuna combinazione è mai sbagliata. Il mio favorito è amarena con mascarpone e pistacchio. Ho capito di averci azzeccato quando Colette Raymond, la mamma di Santella, ha consigliato lo stesso gusto ai nuovi clienti.

Gastronomia Roberto (2221 Rue Bélanger) A classic in my family, Gastronomia Roberto was always a goto growing up. Their cakes have been part of our celebrations for decades. You can choose to layer any flavour gelati from their vast selection, though there’s nothing like the pistachio, nocciola and chocolate combo. Does anyone else remember their spaghetti sundae, the spaghettata? While reminiscing on the phone with owner, Andrea Avvampato, he shared amazing news: it’s coming back, along with their big affogati and gelato stuffed brioche. These will be offered along with their huge gelato repertoire, which is made from their time-proven recipe developed when they first opened in 1984.

Volendovi dare una mano a pianificare il vostro tour montrealese, eccovi una serie di locali assolutamente imperdibili. Che cosa li accomuna? L’attenzione alla qualità degli ingredienti, i metodi tradizionali e i sapori innovativi.

Andrea explained that Roberto’s gelato is simple and authentic. Though they’re most renowned for their Baci gelato and lemon granita, Andrea also recommends their mascarpone, almond & fig and amarena, which incorporates the cherry syrup into the gelato, with roasted almonds and dark chocolate. Go for an evening to enjoy a coffee and gelato (or a spaghettata?) with friends in their cozy space.

Andrea ha spiegato che il gelato di Roberto è semplice ed autentico. Pile ou Glace Gelateria (7084 Boulevard Saint Laurent ) Pile ou Glace continues to serve up creamy, thick and flavourful gelato. When my dad would bring my sister and I to Little Italy as kids, we could not leave without a scoop or two from this gelateria, no matter how long the line was. This is where I learned that pistachio is not supposed to look lime green. Our go-to flavours were pistachio, stracciatella and banana (underrated, honestly), though we have tried many more throughout the years. Go for fresh flavours, great service and a sweet treat to bring on your walk through the area.

Pile ou Glace Gelateria Pile ou Glace continua a servire il suo gelato gustoso, vellutato e cremoso. Quando da piccola mio padre portava me e mia sorella a Little Italy, non potevamo andarcene senza prima passare da questa gelateria, a prescindere da quanto lunga fosse la fila. È qui che ho imparato che il pistacchio non deve essere verde lime. I nostri gusti preferiti erano pistacchio, stracciatella e banana (sottovalutato, onestamente), sebbene, negli anni, ne abbiamo provati molti altri.

Ottimo per i suoi gusti freschi, per l’eccellente servizio e per una coccola dolce durante una passeggiata nel quartiere.

Crémerie Gelato (8875 Boulevard Gouin Est) Alexia Oliverio, manager at Crémerie Gelato explained that the time, effort and love the team puts into their recipe and product are what makes their gelato special. They were very particular about developing a recipe they truly enjoyed, which has allowed them to become one of the best spots in Montreal. Though they pay attention to sourcing authentic ingredients, they are always open to trying new flavours and ideas, keeping their selection exciting and inviting for all palates. You can catch them at their Gouin location, or at events in their gelato truck.

Alexia’s favourite is pistachio, but she also recommends their Nutella gelato, which tastes like you’re eating it straight out of the jar. Though I’m not vegan, their vegan dark chocolate has my heart. It is so flavourful and the texture is spot on, despite being made without dairy. Go to this east-end gem for their familyfriendly location and to hang out on their terrasse.

Crémerie Gelato Alexia Oliverio, manager della Crémerie Gelato ha spiegato che ciò che rende il loro gelato speciale sono il tempo, l’impegno e l’amore che la squadra mette nelle ricette e nel prodotto. Ci tenevano moltissimo a sviluppare una ricetta che gli piacesse veramente, cosa che gli ha consentito di diventare uno dei migliori locali di Montreal.

Sebbene facciano attenzione a reperire gli ingredienti autentici, sono sempre a sperimentare nuovi gusti e idee, e mantenere la loro gamma accattivante ed allettante per tutti i palati. Li potete trovare sia nella sede di Gouin che agli eventi con il loro furgoncino dei gelati.

Anche se il gusto favorito di Alexia è pistacchio, consiglia inoltre il gusto Nutella che sembra come uscito dal barattolo. Pur non essendo vegana, il gusto cioccolato fondente vegano è il mio prediletto. È gustosissimo con una consistenza perfetta, nonostante non contenga prodotti lattieri. Per gustarvelo recatevi nella zona est, dove vi aspetta il loro locale terrazzato adatto alle famiglie.

Florence Café (2425 Rue Centre) A regular haunt of mine when I lived in the neighbourhood, Florence Café has it all from delicious baked goods, great coffee and friendly baristas who make you feel right at home. Every summer, I eagerly await their gelato season, where they serve up authentic flavours with a twist, along with sorbets and homemade soft serve.

Kevin Rosa, co-owner and managing partner, explained that they keep their methods and ingredients simple, traditional and high quality. Go for their unique takes on Italian classics and inclusive menu, which has vegan and dairy-free options.

Kevin recommends cannoli crack, classic pistachio or their ricotta, fig, pistachio (my personal favourite). For those who prefer sorbet, he recommends strawberry basil or mango passionfruit. If you want to give their soft serve a try, I highly suggest their ephemeral blueberry lemon cookie, which is a swirl of Italian and Québecois traditional flavours in a cone.

Florence Café Mio ritrovo abituale quando vivevo nel quartiere, al Florence Cafè si trova di tutto, dalla pasticceria, all’ottimo caffè, ai baristi affabili che ti fanno sentire a casa. Ogni estate, aspetto impaziente la loro stagione del gelato, quando offrono gusti autentici con un tocco originale, oltre che sorbetti e le creme di gelato fatte in casa. Kevin Rosa, comproprietario e socio amministratore, ha spiegato che hanno mantenuto i metodi e gli ingredienti semplici, tradizionali e di alta qualità. Andateci per assaporare la loro personalissima versione dei classici italiani e per il loro menu inclusivo, con versioni vegane e senza prodotti lattieri.

Kevin consiglia i gusti cannolo con scorza, pistacchio classico o ricotta, fichi, pistacchio (il mio preferito). Per quelli che preferiscono il sorbetto, consiglia fragola e basilico o mango e maracuja. Se volete provare le loro creme di gelato, vi consiglio vivamente biscotto effimero al mirtillo blu e limone, un misto di gusti tradizionali italiani e quebecchesi in un cono.

Sicilian Ice Cream (712 College St. W) When you think of gelato in Toronto, you think Sicilian Ice Cream Co. “Gelato is part of the Italian identity that has been shared with the world,” says Maria Galipo, CEO of this famed, family-run gelato institution based on Toronto’s College Street.

With a history of traditional artisanal gelato and sorbet makers dating back decades, they were the first to introduce authentic gelato to Canadians 65 years ago. “We had around eight to 10 standard flavours. Now we have more than 50, with about 16 served at the College St. gelato parlour,” she adds. The company initially started as a store-front operation, with its products now available at supermarkets and grocery stores.

Why visit? Reminds me of sitting in an Italian cafe overlooking the Mediterranean during a summer evening.

Personal favourite? Can’t beat the limone, which tastes like a summer day in Sicily.

Mizzica Gelateria And Cafe (307 Queen St. West) This well-established, multi-award-winning gelato shop is in the heart of the Entertainment district, at the corner of Queen Street and John Street, offers up beloved favourites such as stracciatella and pistachio siciliano, not to mention a delightful amarena cherry. What makes this place so special is it’s based on a real-life love story of two gelato makers: Denise Pisani and Paolo Di Lallo, who fell in love while working at different gelato shops in the city.

Both came to Canada in the mid-2000s (Denise from Sicily and Paolo from Abruzzo). There was a friendly rivalry on who made the best gelato before it blossomed into true love, marriage and opening up their own gelato shop. There’s always a crowd eager to get in to try one of dozens of flavours, which change regularly, but are all reminiscent of a taste of Italy.

Why visit? You can actually watch the gelato being made right before your eyes when you visit.

Personal favourite? Stracciatella, fior di latte and any gelato where amarena cherry is the star.

Rustic Bakery (318 Rustic Rd. North York) As soon as April comes they’re already whipping up refreshing gelato over at Rustic Bakery in North York. Rustic was established by Mirella Lolero and her late husband Frank in 1986.

The shop started making homemade gelato in 1990, introducing the residents of the cornerstone North York bakery to the joys of this special Italian treat. In the summer, there’s usually a crowd sitting in small cafe chairs outside slurping up the sweetness and enjoying la dolce vita. “Our gelato is made fresh in-house. We started making the basic flavours of limone, cioccolato, nocciola, torrone and vanilla,” says Mirella. “When we first started making gelato, we had about 12 traditional flavours. Now we make 24 and we’ve introduced new flavours such as Bacio, amarena and pistachio, to name a few.”

“Our top flavours are nocciola, torrone and lemon.” There’s even a line of gluten-free gelatos, including mint, watermelon and orange.”

Why visit? Best people watching while you enjoy a cone.

Personal favourite? Nothing beats a zuppa inglese and a perfect zabaglione.

Lola’s Gelato (14B Brookers Lane, Etobicoke) From its award-winning gelato to gelato cakes and organic coffee, Lola’s rocks the gelato world. It’s a hidden gem nestled between condos that line Lake Ontario. The gelato here is made in small batches from scratch, with each flavour resulting in a special silkiness that just melts in your mouth, implanting new memories of joy. The company’s website lists the flavours of the day, which is a great way to plan your eating pleasures. They even offer vegan and dairy-free treats, like raspberry sorbet and hazelnut.

Why visit? Grab a cup of your gelato du jour and stroll the neighbourhood, with Lake Ontario as your backdrop.

Personal favourite? I’m not a big chocolate fan but even I love the Ferrero Rocher!

Mizzica Gelateria And Cafe Questa gelateria rinomata e pluripremiata situata nel cuore della zona dei teatri (Entertainment district), all’angolo tra Queen Street e John Street, offre gusti amati come stracciatella e pistacchio siciliano, per non parlare della prelibata amarena. Ciò che rende questo locale speciale è la storia d’amore vera tra due mastri gelatai: Denise Pisani e Paolo Di Lallo, innamoratisi mentre lavoravano in due diverse gelaterie della città. Rustic Bakery Non appena arriva aprile, alla Rustic Bakery di North York si mettono all’opera per preparare il gelato. Rustic è stato inaugurato da Mirella Lolero e dal suo defunto marito nel 1986. Il locale ha cominciato a produrre gelato nel 1990, facendo conoscere ai clienti della pasticceria principale di North York, le gioie di questa specialità italiana. In estate, c’è di solito un gruppo di persone sedute fuori dal piccolo caffè a gustarsi questa prelibatezza e a godersi la dolce vita. “Il nostro gelato lo facciamo fresco in loco. Abbiamo cominciato con gusti base come limone, cioccolato, nocciola, torrone e vaniglia” racconta Mirella. “Quando abbiamo cominciato a fare il gelato, c’erano circa 12 gusti tradizionali. Lola’s Gelato Dal pluripremiato gelato alle torte gelato, al caffè biologico, Lola’s è un campione del mondo del gelato, una gemma nascosta incastonata tra gli edifici che costeggiano il lago Ontario. Il gelato viene fatto da zero e in piccole quantità, con ogni gusto caratterizzato da una speciale setosità che lo fa sciogliere in bocca, innescando sensazioni di pura gioia. Per programmare al meglio i vostri piaceri della gola, sul sito web della compagnia si trovano i gusti del giorno. Offrono inoltre prelibatezze vegane e senza prodotti caseari come il sorbetto di lamponi e il gusto nocciola.

hen it comes to Italian wines, you will no doubt find a plethora of different wineries, indigenous grapes and towns that would baffle even the seasoned, hard-core wine lover like myself. At the heart of this vinous network are two stars often mistaken for each other: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) and Montepulciano D’Abruzzo. While they share a geographical nod in their names, the resemblance ends there. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, hailing from the eponymous city of Montepulciano in Tuscany, is a noble red wine with a pedigree dating back centuries, primarily made from the Sangiovese grape, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. On the other hand, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, a red wine made from the Montepulciano wine grape in the Abruzzo and other regions, results in robust, rustic wines that are markedly different in character.

There are many producers and wine lovers alike who simply refer to the former as “Nobile”. Given its fame, I’d be keen to start doing the same. After all, “Vino Nobile” succinctly emphasizes the wine’s noble quality and Tuscan heritage without the potential geographical confusion. This shorter name carries an elegance making it simply easier to market, particularly on the international stage.

Located in the southeastern part of Tuscany, the production zone of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano offers a canvas where nature and human skill have painted a masterpiece of viniculture that resonates deeply with those who seek both tradition and quality in a bottle. Vineyards are situated at an elevation between 250 metres and 600 metres in altitude and are located near the Orcia and Chiana valleys, offering a microclimate tailor-made for the cultivation of Prugnolo Gentile, blending warmth and cool breezes in a climate that

Pur condividendo un accenno geografico nel nome, le loro somiglianze si fermano qui. Quest’abbreviazione porta con sé un’eleganza che ne rende ancor più semplice la presenza sul mercato, soprattutto al livello internazionale.

I Riti Settennali di Guardia Sanframondi

ooded men in white robes walk slowly, like ghosts.

They flog themselves to secure their place in heaven, striking themselves until they bleed. Each drop represents a forgiven sin, a kept vow or a step towards the longawaited eternal salvation.

The Septennial Rites in honour of the Madonna Assunta (Our Lady of Assumption) are a unique event, at times distressing, whose main “actors” are the so-called battenti a sangue (bleeding penitents)—extraordinary penitents who participate in a religious rite with pagan overtones that takes place every seven years, always in August.

In fact, the Septennial Rites have been held for centuries in the hamlet of Guardia Sanframondi, in the Sannio area, attracting crowds of worshippers from all over the world, including Canada.

Last time it was in 2017, while the next one will happen in August 2024.

From an act dating back to 1702 and kept in the diocesan curia, we learn that, “During the processions in honour of Our Lady of Assumption, the brothers of the Madonna del Pianto (Our Lady of Tears) wear hooded robes and beat or mortify their skin with a whip or a discipline. Over time, the latter, which began as a small scourge, has become a disc of cork inlaid with needles held together with a layer of wax.”

I Riti Settennali in onore della madonna Assunta sono una manifestazione unica, a tratti angosciante, i cui “attori” principali sono i cosiddetti “battenti a sangue”, straordinari penitenti protagonisti di un rito religioso (con sfumature pagane) che si ripete ogni sette anni, sempre in agosto.

I Riti Settennali si tengono, infatti, da secoli in un paesino del Sannio, Guardia Sanframondi, attirando folle di credenti da tutto il mondo, Canada incluso.

L’ultima volta è stata nel 2017, la prossima sarà l’agosto di quest’anno (2024).

Da un atto del marzo 1702 conservato nella Curia diocesana si apprende che “nelle processioni in onore dell’Assunta i confratelli della Madonna del Pianto usano vestire il sacco con il cappuccio per battersi e mortificarsi con la frusta o la disciplina”. La disciplina, piccola frusta, nel tempo è diventata un disco di sughero irto di spilli tenuti da uno strato di cera.

Un passo dopo l’altro i devoti camminano attraverso i quattro quartieri del borgo arroccato sul monte Toppo Capomandro. La cadenza è scandita dal rituale: mea culpa, mea massima culpa.

One step at a time, the devotees walk through the four districts of the hamlet perched on mount Toppo Capomandro. Their pace matches that of the ritual chanting: “Mea culpa, mea massima culpa.”

The penitents do not stop when the robe is covered with blood.

They just slow down to catch a sponge soaked in local white wine (in 2017, the penitents had access to three thousand litres) to disinfect their wounds.

Although the streets are lined with thousands of people (according to estimates there were over 100,000 people in 2017), you could hear a pin drop. The atmosphere is surreal; those who believe, the majority, are entranced and feel close to Heaven, detached from the world and the pleasures of the material life. Even the skeptics, the non-believers, find it hard to remain indifferent in the face of a phenomenon that borders mass hysteria. The spectacle is unique, the choreography fascinating, the bleeding penitents, hooded and anonymous, number around one thousand. The costumed extras are 3,000.

To take part in the Rites is a unique experience, an impressive display of popular devotion, of which there are pale imitations in the Philippines and in Mexico, for one day only at Easter.

Non si sente una mosca volare, eppure ai bordi delle stradine sono accalcate migliaia di persone (secondo una stima più di centomila nel 2017). Nell’aria aleggia un misto di sacro e profano. Si canta, si prega, si piange mentre scorre il sangue dei battenti. L’atmosfera è da brividi, coloro che credono – e sono la maggioranza – sono come in trance, vicini al Cielo, distaccati dal mondo e dai piaceri legati alla vita materiale. Anche gli scettici, i non credenti, faticano a restare indifferenti di fronte a questo fenomeno che rasenta l’isteria collettiva. Lo spettacolo è unico, la coreografia affascinante, i battenti a sangue sono circa mille, incappucciati, anonimi; tremila gli altri figuranti in costume.

Assistere ai Riti è un’esperienza unica, una imponente manifestazione di devozione popolare che ha qualche pallida imitazione nelle Filippine e in Messico, per un giorno solo in occasione della Pasqua.

I Riti Settennali di Guardia Sanframonti hanno una cadenza settennale, durano sette giorni per sette ore al giorno. Il lunedì successivo al 15 agosto i quattro rioni del paese (Croce, Pontella,

seven years and last seven hours a day for seven days. On the Monday following August 15, the four districts of the town (Croce, Pontella, Fontanella and Piazza) each organize two processions—the first called Penitenza (Repentance) and the second Comunione (Communion).

The penitents make their first appearance in the Penitenza procession, exiting the church walking backwards, and holding a cross and an image of the Virgin Mary in their left hand and a sponge bristling with pins, with which they start to strike their chest, in the right. On the day of blood, the first of the celebrations, the penitents gather in the Chapel of Shed Blood from where the statue of Our Lady of Assumption is brought in procession.

On the seventh and last day of the Rites, the high point, the most symbolic, emotional and spectacular moments are represented by the stoicism of the penitents, who offer their blood as an act of purification to ascend to God and the Virgin Mary.

If

you’ve been watching Serie A over the past five years, there’s a great reason for optimism. The league is turning back into the exciting, competitive powerhouse that it was between the 1980s to early 2000s, brimming to bring a slew of European trophies along the way.

Competitive regional teams, dynamic tacticians and emerging youth players have finally given fans something to smile about again. It’s competitive too—a different winner for the past four seasons showcases a league that is never dull. Nevertheless, with little television money, no modern infrastructure, frugal owners and top young players leaving for bigger price tags abroad, the fundamentals are not where they should be. The abolishment of the Growth Decree in January 2024 will also probably have a massive adverse effect on the power of the league in terms of attracting top talent.

The Growth Decree was a tax law voted into existence in 2019. The idea was to incentivize bright, talented people to settle in Italy, spending money and creating jobs. It also allowed players and coaches who haven’t worked in Italy for the previous two years, whether native Italians or not, to pay taxes on just 50% of their income rather than the usual 100%. With top-tier players qualifying for the highest tax rate of 43% percent, there were enormous financial benefits for both players and clubs.

Even with this recent change, the results over the past five years have shown that Italian football is on a growth trajectory. But will it translate to the National Team?

Repeat or regression?

After a landmark victory in EURO2020 (actually 2021), hope and hype were at an all time high. Missing qualification for the 2022 World Cup, the second in a row, brought those hopes to rest again.

Roberto Mancini’s flip-flopping day to day after reiterating his devotion wreaked havoc, but luckily Luciano Spalletti decided to ride in off his fresh Scudetto victory with Napoli and save the day. Rather than take a long sabbatical, he dove back in and took over the National Team, providing the stability needed to qualify for EURO2024.

It will most likely be an Inter-led backline given their impressive form for the Serie A champions this season. The loss of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci definitely stings, but with the development of Alessandro Bastoni (probably top five in the world at moment) plus Francesco Acerbi, Matteo Darmian, Gianluca Mancini, Michele Buongiorno, Giorgio Scalvini and the young Riccardo Calafiori, Italy can be secure in its back line. Even with wingbacks, the team can happily rely on the experience and grit of Gaetano Di Lorenzo and Federico Di Marco to run all day long and provide the crosses needed to score.

ORDER OF THE STAR OF ITALY Honouring Senator Tony Loffreda April 18 was an emotional and humbling day for Senator Tony Loffreda when he was bestowed with the Honourable Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy by His Excellency Andrea Ferrari, Ambassador of Italy. Senator Loffreda is the first Canadian-born senator of Italian descent and is not an Italian citizen. Therefore, receiving this honour issued by the Italian President and the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs is rare. Senator Loffreda is also the recipient of Lieutenant Governor of Canada of Quebec’s Gold Medal for Exceptional Merit, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Governor General of Canada Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.

In honour of International Women’s Day, the CIBPA of Toronto held its Women In Leadership in Vaughan March 20 to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Dr. Giuseppina D’Agostino. The organization presented its prestigious 2024 Woman of the Year Award to Dr. D’Agostino for her work in intellectual property, innovation law as well as her wide-ranging, pioneering initiatives. In 2022 she was recognized as one of the Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada by Canadian Lawyer Magazine as well as Top 5 in Business Law.

L’intelligence artificielle Entretien avec Valérie Pisano, présidente et cheffe de la direction de Mila Par Carole Gagliardi

Institut québécois d’intelligence artificielle Mila est un leader mondial d’avancées scientifiques et comprend la plus grande concentration de chercheurs en apprentissage profond (deep learning) au monde.

Nous nous sommes entretenus ‘a propos de l’IA avec Valérie Pisano, présidente et cheffe de la direction de Mila, auparavant cheffe de la direction du Talent au Cirque du Soleil et cofondatrice du Projet Mobïus sur les biais (une initiative axée sur la diversité et le leadership au féminin). Valérie Pisano parle italien et voyage couramment en Italie, où une grande partie de sa famille vit toujours. Sa plus jeune fille apprend l’italien sur Duolingo et en parlant avec son nonno Carlo.

Votre parcours professionnel n’indique aucune expérience en intelligence artificielle. Qu’est-ce qui vous a poussé à vouloir diriger Mila ?

A priori, je n’avais pas le profil de l’emploi. Ce qui m’a attiré et qui a sans doute plu à Yoshua Bengio, le fondateur de Mila, et à son conseil d’administration, ce sont deux éléments. D’abord, Mila est avant tout un projet de société. C’est un organisme à but non lucratif issu d’un partenariat historique entre l’Université McGill, l’Université de Montréal et plusieurs autres universités, financé par les gouvernements du Canada (30 %) et du Québec (40 %) et par le secteur privé (30 %). J’y ai donc vu une occasion inouïe qui ne se présente qu’une fois par génération de contribuer à un projet immense, unique et novateur qui aurait des répercussions dans le monde entier. D’autre part, je crois que j’arrivais dans ce projet avec une expertise complémentaire, plus humaine et stratégique.

Où se situe Montréal dans le monde en matière de recherche en intelligence artificielle ?

Grâce à Yoshua Bengio, sans doute le plus important chercheur en IA aujourd’hui, Montréal est devenue l’une des principales plaques tournantes mondiales en IA et attire beaucoup de talents exceptionnels.

Le Canada est un leader en matière d’IA et d’apprentissage profond et figure dans le top 5 mondial derrière la Chine, les États-Unis, Singapour et le Royaume-Uni. ChatGPT, entre autres, a été développé à Montréal, à Toronto et ailleurs au Canada.

Mila travaille activement sur plus de 150 projets différents.

Combien vont aboutir à une application concrète ?

Mila se consacre surtout à la recherche fondamentale et à l’avancement de la science. Notre travail n’est pas de créer des applications. Nous cherchons à rendre des systèmes de plus en plus intelligents capables de résoudre des problèmes liés à la technologie.

Imaginez par exemple une application d’IA à laquelle vous auriez donné la permission de lire tous vos courriels. Cette application va décoder votre style, connaîtra vos codes sociaux et sera éventuellement en mesure de mener vos échanges à partir de pistes que vous lui aurez données. En se rapprochant des capacités intellectuelles et interrelationnelles qui jusqu’à maintenant appartenaient exclusivement aux humains, cela pourrait aussi créer des dérapages.

Certains affirment que l’IA ne tardera pas à dépasser l’intelligence humaine. Qu’en est-il ?

Dans l’ensemble, on a pivoté dans une ère où l’IA a de plus en plus de capacités et on doit se demander à quelle vitesse on veut qu’elle continue d’évoluer. Dans certains domaines, l’IA a dépassé l’intelligence humaine.

Yoshua Bengio compte parmi les personnes qui investissent énormément de temps et de ressources à rallier les gouvernements et les

entreprises afin d’établir un cadre qui permette de s’assurer qu’avant le déploiement d’un projet touchant des millions d’humains, on puisse éviter qu’il soit utilisé à des fins malveillantes.

L’IA évolue rapidement, et les gouvernements sont inquiets. Ils se mobilisent afin de mettre au point des mécanismes de sécurité et de décider ce qu’on attend de ces nouvelles technologies. La réponse est un mélange d’actions ancrées dans un cadre législatif. Au Canada, le projet de loi C-27 devrait être adopté cette année. L’Union européenne vient d’adopter l’EU AI Act. Les États-Unis sont plus frileux, mais le président actuel, Joe Biden, a signé un décret visant à réguler l’intelligence artificielle.

A-t-on raison de craindre l’IA ?

On doit traiter l’IA comme d’autres technologies qui ont eu énormément d’impact. La biopharmaceutique et l’aviation ont connu des avancées extraordinaires, mais il existe un protocole à respecter avant de faire voler un avion. C’est pareil pour l’IA. Il faut bien l’encadrer pour éviter les dérapages et s’assurer que son utilisation ne porte pas atteinte aux droits de la personne.

Y a-t-il des domaines qui seront plus touchés que d’autres dans l’avenir ?

C’est très difficile d’imaginer des domaines qui ne profiteront pas du développement de l’IA. Les innovations dans le domaine médical aideront les médecins à préciser leur diagnostic et à proposer de meilleurs traitements. D’importantes avancées se dessinent en enseignement, car les jeunes n’apprennent pas tous de la même manière. On parle de l’IA qui permet de tricher, mais elle permettra aussi de réinventer l’enseignement dans nos sociétés. L’IA doit rendre le travail des humains plus fluide, plus efficace, plus intelligent dans un contexte de pénurie d’emplois à l’échelle mondiale. Il faut s’ouvrir à ce moment d’exploration unique qui ne peut être ignoré.

Cours de langue italienne Les 10 ans du Centro Scuola Dante Alighieri (CESDA) à Montréal Par Vittoria Zorfini

Centro Scuola Dante Alighieri (CESDA) fait la promotion de la langue et de la culture italiennes depuis 10 ans dans la région métropolitaine de Montréal. Il propose des programmes d’études pour adultes et pour enfants et est reconnu par le gouvernement italien. Nous avons rencontré Gian Galeazzo Pollifrone, directeur général du CESDA, pour faire le point sur cette décennie, en évoquant les débuts du centre, la reprise de ses activités après la pandémie et les nouveautés en cours ou à venir. M. Pollifrone est né à Gênes, en Ligurie, puis a déménagé au Canada. Après quelques années passées au PICAI, il a œuvré en coulisse pour créer le CESDA. Comment est né le projet ?

L’idée est née en 2013, lors d’une conférence sur la langue italienne. Peu après, l’ambassadeur d’Italie au Canada de l’époque, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, a consulté un groupe d’entrepreneurs montréalais pour mettre en place un nouvel organisme d’enseignement de l’italien dans la région de Montréal et de Laval. Le consulat général d’Italie et l’ambassade ont collaboré à sa création avec Giovanni Rapanà, Silvio De Rose et Carmine D’Argenio (actuel président), et ont fondé le Centro Scuola Dante Alighieri. L’ambassade et le consulat ont donc été les centres derrière le projet. J’ai collaboré en coulisse à la demande des trois fondateurs. J’ai doté le projet d’une structure parce qu’il devait être présenté de manière concrète aux institutions qui nous ont poussés à le réaliser.

Comment est née votre collaboration ?

Bien que j’aie eu d’autres missions ici, au Canada, avant cela, et pour ne pas rester les bras croisés j’ai collaboré pendant 10 ans au PICAI dans différents rôles en tant qu’enseignant, mais je me suis aussi occupé de la partie informatique. Lorsque l’idée de créer le CESDA est apparue, les trois fondateurs cherchaient quelqu’un qui pourrait la réaliser concrètement – et j’ai accepté.

Comment le CESDA a-t-il été accueilli par la communauté et à qui s’adresse-t-il aujourd’hui ?

Il s’agissait, au moins pendant les premières années, d’une offre s’ajoutant à l’offre éducative existante. Nos élèves ne viennent pas seulement de familles italiennes, mais aussi d’autres communautés. L’italien est une langue qui fascine beaucoup de monde, pas seulement des enfants et des petits-enfants de familles italiennes.

Du début des activités jusqu’à la période précédant la pandémie, combien d’élèves étaient inscrits ?

Nous sommes passés de quelques personnes inscrites à plus de 400 inscriptions. Les choses ont changé avec l’arrêt des cours en présentiel pendant la pandémie. Nous avons quand même essayé de parer le

coup avec des cours en ligne, qui ont objectivement une efficacité limitée. Pendant la pandémie, le nombre de participants a donc chuté. Mais avec l’assouplissement des restrictions, nous avons été les premiers à reprendre les cours dès que le gouvernement a donné son feu vert. Pendant plus d’un an et demi, nous avons engagé du personnel supplémentaire pour nous conformer aux restrictions de l’époque. Aujourd’hui, nous sommes revenus aux chiffres d’avant la pandémie.

Quelles sont les nouveautés ?

Nous enseignons de nouveau dans les écoles de Montréal où nous étions avant la pandémie, et nous sommes désormais présents dans plusieurs écoles de Laval et dans une école de l’ouest de l’île, ce qui est nouveau pour nous. L’autre grande nouvelle est que maintenant, en plus d’offrir le programme pour adultes à la Casa d’Italia, nous avons lancé des cours d’italien pour enfants – donc je dirais que nous sommes assez satisfaits.
