id you follow the decline of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s popularity and the rise of Leader of the Opposition Pierre Poilievre’s rhetoric? Wonder what surprises next summer might bring?

Did you watch the live “bad day” meltdown of USA President “Sleepy Joe” Biden during the first American presidential debate? How about the (thankfully) unsuccessful assassination attempt of former president Donald Trump and present Republican presidential candidate before a worldwide audience which resulted in the now “iconic” photo of Don branding himself as idol, freedom fighter and martyr? Did you catch the subsequent convention, a well-staged production that had elements of a Miss America pagent, a WWE event and a UFC match, with pane et circenses added for all convention attendees and television audiences to enjoy?

Maybe you were revolted by the continuing horrors and devastation of Ukraine by Russia or the never-ending sight of a post-apocalyptic “promised land” in the Israel-Hamas war? Maybe closer to home, on university campuses, you were disturbed and inconvenienced by the local playout of MidEastern clashes on our Canadian streets?

On a less serious note (for some), were you lifted by a flying Connor McDavid and Oilers only to be disappointed in the end in the hot and humid Florida weather? Were you let down by the Azzurri performance at Euro 2024 in Germany and lifted by that of Team Canada in the wild Copa America USA 2024? Did England, failing to win anything again, cause you nightmares and insomnia? Did Spain’s and Argentina’s victories bring you joy?

Well, I experienced most of the above and will end by quoting my friend and favourite Toronto calcio, soccer, football and senior senator of sports reporters and philosopher della tavola and del Sud, Nicola Sparano. In his personal website sports column of June 2024, he wrote: “Imbarazzati dall’Italia, orgogliosi del Canada.” That just about summed up my feelings as well. FIFA further penalized and docked the team six points. At the end of July, Nicola’s headline read “dronati e penalizzati” and, on a more vulgar note, “cornuti e mazziati.” Yet, against all odds, after winning the final first round games against France and Colombia and qualifying to move on, I would add “risuscitati.” Way to go, ladies!

Oppure avete provato disgusto dinnanzi ai continui orrori e alla devastazione dell’Ucraina per mano russa; ovvero a causa delle continue immagini di una Palestina “terra promessa” post apocalittica nella guerra tra Israele ed Hamas? Magari avete subito il disagio e il fastidio delle messe in scena vicino casa o nei campus universitari degli scontri mediorientali nelle strade di tutto il Canada?

Parlando di cose meno serie (per alcuni), vi siete sentiti sollevati dai fortissimi Connor McDavid ed Oilers per poi rimanere alla fine delusi nel caldo e nell’umidità della Florida? Vi hanno deluso le prestazioni degli Azzurri agli Europei in Germania, ma sollevato quelle del Canada nell’accesissima competizione della Coppa America 2024 tenutasi negli Stati Uniti? Il fatto che l’Inghilterra non sia ancora una volta riuscita ad aggiudicarsi niente vi ha provocato insonnia e incubi? Le vittorie della Spagna e dell’Argentina vi hanno rallegrati?

Beh, io questi sentimenti li ho vissuti tutti e per concludere citerò il mio amico di Toronto, esperto di calcio e senatore degli inviati sportivi, nonché filosofo della tavola e del Sud, Nicola Sparano. Nella colonna sportiva di giugno 2024 del suo sito, ha scritto: Imbarazzati dall’Italia, orgogliosi del Canada. Frase che riassume più o meno ciò che provo anch’io. T

he relationship between Quebec’s Anglophone and Francophone communities has always been complex, shaped by over 400 years of history and political power dynamics. By the mid-to-late 1960s, the provincial government initiated its first of many efforts to suppress the rights of the Anglophone minority, perpetuating a narrative of a false decline of the French language in Quebec. This ongoing saga reflects a broader story about identity, language and the dangerous role of government overreach in defining who belongs.

A significant moment in this history was the Saint-Leonard School Crisis of 1968, which marked one of the earliest major battles over language in Quebec. The crisis centered around whether Italian-Canadian children in the Saint-Leonard neighborhood would receive education in French or English.

Tensions exploded into protests, setting the stage for future language debates. The crisis still resonates with many in the Anglophone community (a large proportion of which is of Italian descent) over 50 years later.

In this issue, we look at key activists like Maria Simboli and Mario Barone, who fought for the rights of Italian-Canadian parents to choose English-language education for their children. Today, that same spirit of resistance lives on through the voices of modern activists like Ralph Mastromonaco on our cover, a vocal critic of Quebec’s language laws. These everyday citizens stand up for the rights of the Anglophone community, even when their political representatives refuse to do so.

The Quebec Liberal Party, which traditionally attracted Anglophone voters, has consistently failed to stand up for their community. While claiming to be defenders of minority rights, the party—especially its members representing majority Anglophone ridings—has repeatedly lacked the courage to oppose unjust language laws. In recent years, Liberal politicians have been reluctant to challenge legislation like Bill 96, which places even more restrictions on the use of English in Quebec.

Many Anglophones feel abandoned, left to fend for themselves.

One of the more absurd recent developments was the “Bonjour/ Hi” motion, which was unanimously passed in Quebec’s National Assembly in 2017. This non-binding resolution discouraged the use of the bilingual greeting “Bonjour/Hi” in Montreal, a city where both French and English speakers coexist. The motion, while symbolic, sent a clear message: bilingualism is not welcome in Quebec.

This type of divisive rhetoric, fueled by political opportunism, only deepens the rift between the two communities.

While politicians and media often fan the flames of division, everyday reality is far more harmonious. Ignorance, bigotry and indifference can be found in any community, but it’s rare to encounter a well-intentioned Anglophone who does not believe that the French language should be protected in Quebec. The vast majority of Anglophones recognize the importance of preserving Quebec’s Francophone culture and heritage. In fact, most Anglophones are bilingual and participate in both linguistic cultures with ease. The problem arises when protectionism turns into suppression—when the rights of one group are trampled to elevate the other.

l rapporto tra le comunità anglofone e francofone del Quebec è sempre stato complesso, plasmato da oltre 400 anni di storia e dinamiche di potere politico. Verso la metà e la fine degli anni Sessanta, il governo provinciale ha avviato il primo di molti sforzi per cancellare i diritti della minoranza anglofona, perpetuando l’idea di un falso declino della lingua francese in Quebec. Questa saga in corso riflette una storia più ampia sull’identità, la lingua e il pericoloso ruolo del governo nel definire chi “appartiene”.

Un momento significativo di questa storia è stata la crisi della scuola di Saint-Leonard del 1968, che ha segnato una delle prime grandi battaglie sulla lingua in Quebec. L’ignoranza, il bigottismo e l’indifferenza si possono trovare in qualsiasi comunità, ma è raro incontrare un anglofono ben intenzionato che non creda che la lingua francese debba essere protetta in Quebec. La grande maggioranza degli anglofoni riconosce l’importanza di preservare la cultura e il patrimonio francofono del Quebec. In effetti, la maggior parte degli anglofoni è bilingue e partecipa con facilità a entrambe le culture linguistiche. This past June, Leger Marketing released a survey that asked Quebecers about their views on bilingualism. Unsurprisingly to anyone living in Montreal, over half of Quebecers (55%) believe their province should be officially bilingual. This result reflects the reality on the ground: most Quebecers, both Anglophone and Francophone, embrace bilingualism and coexist peacefully.

It’s the politicians and the media who seem intent on perpetuating a false narrative of division and decline.

Despite the relentless push to restrict the use of English in Quebec, I remain optimistic about the future. I long for the day when a new generation of Francophone Quebecers will finally make it crystal clear to their politicians that they no longer want to be pawns in a divisive language war. The protection of the French language should not come at the expense of the rights of Quebec’s Anglophone community. It’s time for Quebec to embrace a future where both French and English can thrive, side by side.

Ultimately, language should be a bridge, not a barrier. The provincial government’s suppression of Anglophone rights, driven by a misplaced fear of French decline, does nothing but sow division in a province that could be a model for multiculturalism and bilingualism. Rather than scapegoating the Anglophone community, it’s time for Quebec to embrace its linguistic diversity and chart a path toward a more inclusive future.

Lo scorso giugno, Leger Marketing ha pubblicato un sondaggio che chiedeva ai quebecchesi quali fossero le loro opinioni sul bilinguismo. È ora che il Quebec abbracci un futuro in cui sia il francese che l’inglese possano prosperare, fianco a fianco.

In definitiva, la lingua dovrebbe essere un ponte, non una barriera. La soppressione dei diritti degli anglofoni da parte del governo provinciale, motivata da un ingiustificato timore del declino del francese, non fa altro che seminare divisione in una provincia che potrebbe essere un modello di multiculturalismo e bilinguismo. Invece di fare da capro espiatorio alla comunità anglofona, è ora che il Québec abbracci la sua diversità linguistica e tracci un percorso verso un futuro più inclusivo.

How 1960s Italian immigrant protests shaped today’s education and language rights

ost of us have two grandmothers, but I was blessed to have three. My Nonna Lia’s younger sister—my paternal great-aunt Maria Simboli (1942–2020)— arrived in Canada with her family in 1952 from the village of Scanno in the mountains of Abruzzo. By boat then by train, her family reached their new home on Adam Street in Montreal, in the dead of winter.

Zia Maria was an exceptional woman in many respects. For one, she was able to enroll in school despite being the girl of impoverished immigrants, whose children were often forced to abandon education to help their family earn money. In contrast to many of her peers who spoke Italian at home and had acquired a functional French to navigate daily life, Zia Maria was perfectly fluent in Italian, French and English. She was always cognizant of her privilege to study, and her gratitude never went unnoticed to her family.

Eventually, Zia Maria became very involved in community affairs, particularly in the education system that was shaping the minds of her children and nephews. They had been sent to bilingual elementary schools in the mid-to-late 1960s, where

my father, uncles and aunts had learned English and French.

Italian immigrants were grateful for the chance given to their children to learn English. However, this scholastic arrangement was not by their own choice, as Italian children were not welcome in French schools up until the late 1960s. It therefore came as a shock to many of these new Italian-Canadians, Zia Maria included, when French-Canadian protesters marched the streets of Saint-Leonard in September 1968. Little did Italian-Canadians know that their fervent opposition to the protest would forever change the course of Canadian education laws and enshrine protections for minority official-language education into Canada’s Constitution.

The historical context in Quebec Throughout the 1960s, Quebec saw major sociocultural upheaval.

The landmark election of Jean Lesage’s Liberal Party in 1960 extinguished the “Grande Noirceur” (Great Darkness) of the hyper-conservative Duplessis regime and ignited the Quiet Revolution. These years witnessed a massive release from the hitherto hegemonic grip of the Catholic Church upon many facets of Quebec society, especially primary and secondary education. This sudden secularization of the public school system triggered animated discourse on how to best protect and promote Quebec cultural sovereignty at a time when enrollment in French schools had begun to decline, due to a decelerating birth rate amongst Francophones and an earlier mistrust towards Allophones.

Around this time, a group of French-Canadian activists founded the Ligue pour l’intégration scolaire (School Integration League, or LIS), whose mission was to assimilate immigrant children into the French school system and, by extension, conform to French Quebec culture. They held public protests and petitioned school board officials to take measures to absorb newcomers to Quebec within unilingual French schools. This pragmatic shift in attitude manifested during the 1967–1968 academic year, wherein Saint-Leonard school commissioners decided to eliminate bilingual primary schools and replace them with unilingual French courses. The motive for this decision, according to historian Jean-Claude Robert, was the finding that more than 85% of Allophone pupils in Saint-Leonard enrolled in the bilingual classes elected to continue their secondary studies in English.

alph Mastromonaco, a criminal lawyer from Montreal with 41 years of experience, opens up about a controversial and overlooked aspect of Quebec’s history experienced by many children of Italian immigrants, including himself. He recently penned an article challenging the longstanding narrative surrounding the Italian-speaking community’s relationship with Quebec’s educational and linguistic policies. He argues the media has misrepresented the historical challenges faced by immigrants, particularly the imposed anglicization of children of Italian immigrants practiced by French Catholic schools of the ’50s and ’60s, which diverted these students to English schools.

Could you explain the issues you’ve brought to the attention of many media outlets?

I wrote an article dealing with the language issue in Quebec and the false narrative propagated by the media in Quebec regarding English-speaking Italian communities.

After the Second World War, Quebec had a denominational school system divided into French Catholic schools, English Catholic schools and English Protestant schools.

There was no demographic need for the French speaking majority to be linguistically reinforced by immigrant children. When Italians immigrated to Montreal, many parents were prevented from enrolling their children in French Catholic schools. That was wrong.

At that time, Quebec society did not have human rights legislation on the books nor a human rights culture. It was more or less socially acceptable to express prejudices and engage in discriminatory practices.

I believe many Italian immigrants, like me, were rejected by the French-speaking Catholic schools out of a desire to maintain student population homogeneity. We were perceived as being different or even difficult to teach. The first injustice was to reject us when we had every right to attend these schools.

Why did you feel the need to write this article?

The French language issue is far more textured than what we’ve heard over the last 40 to 50 years. What was going on in the ’50s and ’60s was an imposed anglicization of children of Italian immigrants. Anybody not French Catholic, like Italian Catholics or people of other faiths ( Jewish, Orthodox, etc.) were sent to English schools where they received a good education.

A second injustice occurred in the late ’60s and early ’70s, when the community was then blamed for going to English schools. All of a sudden, the decline of the French language was in good part blamed on the fact that immigrants who came here were said to reject the French language and choose to go to the English schools. To my mind, that’s never been acknowledged in the media, or certainly not in the French media, and certainly not taught in our school curriculum.

Has the government ever addressed this issue in any way?

Not at all. There’s never really been an acknowledgement of the fact that the French Catholic school system of the ’50s and ’60s had itself to blame for a lot of the clientele that attended English Catholic and English Protestant schools.

It’s also completely understandable that when the government in the ’70s started to acknowledge that there was a demographic problem, that the French language population was shrinking because the birth rate dramatically decreased in the late ’60s and early ’70s, it became imperative to do something to increase French language school enrollment which started going down.

But there was no justification to lay blame on immigrant families for this demographic problem.

What kind of response did your article receive?

People thanked me, grateful somebody finally wrote this story.

Others said they never even knew this happened, because nobody ever spoke about it in the media or in our schools. Some commented on how they tried to tell Francophone co-workers or schoolmates what happened to us. Either they wouldn’t believe it or said that they never heard about it.

Why are you bringing this issue to light?

The objective is to have the experience discussed, to have it acknowledged as part of the history of the language issue. We organized a town hall meeting that was very well attended, and there was a good amount of support expressed. A lot of people stated they’ve heard this false narrative for decades, and no one has ever challenged it. It’s about time that we set the record straight.

We live in a democracy and we’re entitled to voice our opinions and state what happened. The government should acknowledge it and ultimately apologize.

The English-speaking community of Quebec has been portrayed in a certain manner for the last 40 to 50 years; we’re part of the myths and stereotypes that nationalists and separatists love to propagate.

We’re allowed to say that not only is this narrative false, it’s also insulting to our community, because it suggests that we rejected the French language to anglicize ourselves.

This shows incredible ignorance of Quebec’s Italian community, because we are, for the vast majority, trilingual. We have never rejected the French language. I think all of us as children heard from our parents the importance of speaking both languages in Canada. Part of the success of the Italian community is attributable to its strategy of not being dragged into this binary discussion of French versus English.

Fifty years into this debate, I think it’s time that we speak truth to power, and do that respectfully and passionately. We all care about Quebec. I fundamentally believe that Quebec belongs to everybody, not just a specific, politically important demographic. If you believe in democracy, every voice matters.

My vision of Quebec is an inclusive Quebec, a diverse Quebec.

F

élix Rose is a Quebec documentary filmmaker, producer and screenwriter. A few years ago, he took an interest in the Saint-Leonard crisis (1967-1969), an important page in the history of the Italian community and French-speaking Quebec.

At the root of the conflict was the desire of Italian Quebecers to offer their children a bilingual education (French and English) rather than a unilingual French one.

The son of political activist Paul Rose, Félix Rose carries a dark family history. His father was responsible for the kidnapping and murder of politician Pierre Laporte during the October 1970 crisis. “It was a terrible shock; I didn’t believe my father could have done such a thing.” It was a deeply disturbing event that led him to making the documentary Les Rose (2020), which tells the story of this working-class family. “My father died during my research, but I continued my work, and that’s how I discovered the crisis in Saint-Leonard. My father had worked there alongside Raymond Lemieux, a political activist with whom, despite his precarious state of health, I managed to have a long interview. It was through his story that I learned about the Saint-Leonard crisis and decided to make a documentary about it.”

The Saint-Leonard crisis was a clash of two visions: that of French-speaking Quebecers who wanted to protect their language, and that of Quebecers of Italian origin who wanted to ensure the best possible future for their children. “The Italians didn’t refuse to speak French: they wanted to maintain bilingual schools,” he explains.

In the course of his research, two figures stood out to him:

hen Toronto-based author and public speaker Joe Giampaolo was growing up in Rome, he found himself captivated by the melodious sounds of the Italian language permeating in his midst. The Roman dialect was also intertwined with daily life. Steeped in legend and lore, he has fond memories of hearing it when he was frequenting fruit markets with his mother and playing with neighbourhood children. Spoken colloquially, they delighted in its most well-known expressions.

“It was very common to hear it while strolling in certain old neighbourhoods, or even while listening to music, as many popular singers composed songs in the Roman dialect.

It was like growing up in a bilingual city, such as Montreal, where you spoke one language but, at the same time, you were constantly exposed to the other one.”

Italy’s enthralling linguistic diversity, which boasts 34 languages and dialects, was on full display at the third annual edition of L’eco dei dialetti: A Celebration of Dialects. Held in Toronto to commemorate Italian Heritage Month in June, the Villa Charities event was a resounding success. Twentyfour beloved authors of poetry, prose and song evoked sentiments ranging from pride to playful rivalry and nostalgia with their original works and performances.

Among the innumerable highlights were: a hilarious rendition of Two Sisters, Carmela and Serafina chatting over the telephone in the Molisano dialect by Anna Romano Milne; a rapturous musical interlude by Charly Chiarelli of Sicily; and a touching poem by Danila DiCroce in the Abruzzese dialect.

As Gianna Patriarca, who read a poem at the event, elucidated in an article previously published in Panoram Italia:

eople sometimes come into your life for a reason, good or bad, and map your journey in ways you may never have imagined. For many aspiring authors, especially Italian-Canadian ones, Antonio D’Alfonso was the catalyst, the medium, the agent whose decree was to make visible the work and the voices of writers not offered a space on the mainstream Canadian literary stage. Antonio was my first publisher, taking a chance of my very first book—Italian Women and Other Tragedies.

D’Alfonso was born in Montreal, with parents hailing from Guglionesi in Molise. He attended both French and English school and is fluently trilingual. In 1978 at the age of 25, he established a bilingual publishing house called Guernica Editions in Montreal. His press, his energy and passion gave a voice to writers like myself, including many Quebec authors as well as translations of established local and international authors. His mandate was always to address creative, cultural, social and theoretical issues and questions of identity. His own career as a writer and artist was varied: poet, novelist, filmmaker, photographer, translator, musician. To say this is the definition of a Renaissance man may not be far from the truth. In over 50 years of publishing and producing art, he never tired of discovering novel directions and innovative modes of communication. His need to

As a child, what did you dream of doing? How did radio come into your life?

I dreamed of being a flight attendant to travel all over the world. I landed in radio by pure chance after participating in a beauty contest for fun. In the room was the producer of CFMB’s Italian programming, who was then looking for a female voice, intrigued because I was the only contestant from northern Italy. After a few days, accompanied by my mom, I went to visit the studios on Drummond Street. Mario De Filippo was on air and unexpectedly turned on the microphone and started to ask me questions live. I remember my head throbbing, but within seconds I felt perfectly comfortable, as if I had always done this job. It was a real lightbulb moment, and it became the great passion of my life. From there, my incredible journey began.

Everything else is history.

When you started you had just moved from Susa in Piemonte to Montreal with your family. What was the role of radio for Italians?

Those were the years of the great emigration, when thousands of Italians from all walks of life were arriving in Canada in search of a better life. The vast majority did not speak English or French, and in this context CFMB acted as the glue between the community and Italy. It broadcast 20 hours of programing in Italian every week that included news, music and entertainment. This helped the compatriots keep ties with their culture and language, while facilitating their integration into Canadian society.

My nonna’s ribs. I will never know exactly how to make them as good as they were. My best guess is using a whole bottle of oil, but I have yet to try ones even remotely close to her recipe. What’s an Italian tradition you want to carry on? Without a doubt it is Sunday family gatherings. Being lucky enough to regularly see your cousins, aunts and uncles is so important for a close family bond and is the key to my family’s strong support system. A less obvious one would be having a giant credenza of dishes “for company” that never get touched. What advice would you give 5-year-old you? Everything is an opportunity. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there; you never know what will happen. Who are you named after? My mother named me after studying a series of Greek plays featuring the character Antigone. She liked the character because she was admired as a symbol of justice. My dad liked the name because, in

the stories, she took care of her father in his old age. The Greek name does confuse a lot of people though. Favourite Italian expression and why: It would probably be something my nonno always says which is “la vita non è la nostra.” The thought that we are not in control of our lives and simply must make the best of it has helped me through a lot of difficult changes in my life. What do you want your legacy to be? I want to be remembered as someone who achieved success by doing good work and helping others. At the end of the day, if I am remembered as a good person that made a positive difference to the world, I am happy. What makes you most proud to be Italian-Canadian? My family makes me most proud to be Italian-Canadian. The love and support they give me and each other, as well as the culture and traditions they have passed down to me, are the biggest reasons why the Italian-Canadian identity is so important to me.

I sincerely hope you made the most of it and created those special magical summertime memories that stay with you a lifetime. Isn’t that part of its charm?

This year, my summer got off to a stellar start with an impromptu, ultra-luxury press tour to Grand Cayman island in mid-May. Five days in this idyllic Caribbean destination was nothing short of paradise. Besides the instant joy I had just disembarking the plane and feeling 30-degree weather on my skin again, I lit up the moment I hit the spectacular shores of Seven Mile Beach, and that light it ignited within me lingered throughout the summer.

Discovering those crystal-blue, at times technicolour turquoise warm waters and the refreshing touch of the white sand beach after a splendid swim was an auspicious kickoff to the season. However, it was the overall experience that left its indelible mark.

Waking up every morning in a sumptuous four-bedroom villa overlooking a golf course and lagoon, and enjoying my first cup of coffee under sunny skies in the backyard with my feet dangling in the pool is my idea of an exceptional start to the day. Whether we were on a Spirits Tasting tour, on a private stingray and snorkel charter with our very own captain, or just enjoying some fabulous beaching time, the blissful moments were bountiful. Throughout the trip, as I soaked in all the lavishness, I reflected upon what luxury travel really means today and why it is growing so much in popularity.

on l’evidente accorciarsi delle giornate e il ritorno dell’aria fresca e frizzantina a scandire la mattina e la sera, è chiaro che l’estate volge ineluttabilmente al termine. Spero di cuore che ve la siate goduta al meglio e che abbiate fatto il pieno di ricordi speciali e indelebili di un’estate magica. Non rientra anche questo nel suo fascino?

Quest’anno, a metà maggio, la mia estate è cominciata in modo stratosferico grazie a un inatteso tour promozionale superlusso nell’isola di Gran Cayman. Cinque giorni in quest’idillica località dei Caraibi, vero e proprio paradiso. Al di là della gioia immediata provata una volta scesa dall’aereo nel percepire sulla pelle i 30 gradi, ho reso il momento ancor più speciale con una visita alla costa della Seven Mile Beach, che mi ha donato una sensazione di splendore rimasta con me per tutta l’estate.

Scoprirne le acque tiepide e cristalline, a tratti di un turchese technicolor, unitamente alla freschezza della sabbia bianca dopo una splendida nuotata, ha inaugurato la stagione alla grande. È stata però l’esperienza nel suo insieme a lasciare un segno indelebile.

Svegliarsi ogni mattina in una sontuosa villa di quattro camere che si affacciavano sul campo da golf o sulla laguna, e gustarsi un caffè al risveglio in giardino sotto un cielo soleggiato e con i piedi a mollo in piscina corrispondono alla mia idea di un perfetto inizio di giornata. Che partecipassimo a un tour di degustazione di superalcolici, a un’escursione privata per vedere le pastinache o fare snorkeling con un capitano tutto per noi, o che ci godessimo semplicemente una meravigliosa pausa in spiaggia, di momenti felici ce ne sono stati in abbondanza. Per tutta la durata del viaggio, nell’abbandonarmi al benessere, ho riflettuto sul vero significato odierno di viaggio di lusso e sul perché della sua crescente popolarità.

I talk to both luxury vacationers and those who curate these dream holidays, as well as give a glimpse inside some of the luxurious properties in the Exclusive Resorts’ portfolio while uncovering some of the curated experiences reserved for their members. Luxury doesn’t stop there. I also speak with executive chef and owner of The Imperial Luxury Event space in Toronto, Rino Perruzza, who takes us on a coveted five-day stay he hosts in September in a sprawling villa on Lake Trasimeno in Umbria. Quick Pasta e Fagioli Pasta e Fagioli veloce

H

alfway between a thick soup and creamy pasta, this comforting dish is common in many parts of Italy and counts endless variations. The trick to preparing it during the week is to use canned beans and short pasta. You can add a small portion of pureed beans to thicken the final broth. Perfect without meat, some prefer it with crispy pancetta or gambuccio (end part of the prosciutto). I prefer making it with salami and plenty of Pecorino Romano cheese.

Il trucco per prepararlo durante la settimana è utilizzare fagioli in scatola e pasta corta. Si può aggiungere una piccola porzione di purea di fagioli per addensare il brodo finale. Perfetto senza carne, alcuni lo preferiscono con pancetta croccante o gambuccio (parte finale del prosciutto). Io preferisco prepararlo con il salame e sempre con abbondante pecorino romano.

A new generation of bakers and pizzaioli are now offering the Roman style version with a wide variety of toppings for all tastes. Here’s a handful of favourites known for their flavour and flair.

This family-run business turned to Roman-style pizza because: “It’s great to go, for leftovers, everything,” explained Mauro Covone, co-owner and co-founder. First time trying? Covone, suggests the caciocavallo or the caprese topped with fresh Quebec-made mozzarella.

Ugo Pizzeria

In questo imperdibile locale, che avrà presto una nuova sede, la pizza è fatta con amore e nel modo più verace possibile. Se la folla a pranzo e la fila fuori nel fine settimana ci dicono qualcosa è che quella di Segreta è una fetta ambita della nostra città. Per Richi Ourichian, proprietario e pizzaiolo, è il cibo numero uno al mondo e una tela meravigliosa con la quale gli piace sperimentare. Il menu della pizzeria Segreta non si limita a ricreare sapori italiani tipici di Roma, ma cerca sempre di adattare e incorporare l’elemento montrealese. La Cup & Crisp pepperoni con burrata e miele speziato ne è un ottimo (squisito) esempio. Ourichian spera di essere uno dei molti locali che contribuiscono a far inserire Montreal nella lista delle città con un’ottima pizza. Vi siete convinti a provare la pizza di Segreta? Suggerisce la Sottosopra: “Una margherita all’ennesima potenza”.

Their Cup & Crisp pepperoni with burrata & spicy honey is a great (and delicious) example. Ourichian hopes to be one of the many local spots helping to put Montreal on the map as a strong pizza city. Convinced to give Segreta a try? He suggests the Sottosopra: “A margherita on steroids.”

Pizzeria Redipizza

Michele Casale, proprietario e cuoco della pizzeria Redipizza, aveva promesso alla figlia che un giorno avrebbe fatto la miglior pizza di Montreal. Nel 2018, ha vinto il titolo in città. A quel punto ha puntato al successo nazionale ed è stato nominato Pizza Chef dell’anno in un concorso tenutosi a Toronto nel 2020. “Ciò che rende diversa la pizza al taglio è che la puoi reggere con una mano e rimane piatta. Ci deve essere una base croccante e molta aria nell’impasto”. Il rispetto e la passione di Casale per la pizza al taglio sono tangibili ad ogni morso grazie a sapori che rievocano le pizzerie italiane. Da otto anni gestisce il locale con la moglie e mi ha detto che la pizza la mangia tutti giorni.

He then aimed for national acclaim and was named Pizza Chef of the Year in a Toronto-based contest in 2020. “What makes pizza al taglio different is that you can hold it with one hand and it stays flat. It has to have a crunchy bottom and lots of air in the dough.” Casale’s respect and passion for pizza al taglio is tangible in every bite, with flavours reminiscent of Italian pizzerie. He has been running the business with his wife for the last eight years and told me that he eats his pizza every day.

Eataly Yorkville, Sherway Greens and Don Mills Ever since Eataly has opened various locations in the GTA, fans have been flocking not only to the restaurants but also the various food stations, where you can indulge in your favourite Italian treat, including pizza. Eataly teamed up with experts from Rossopomodore, a Napoli-based pizza company that adheres to generations-old techniques on the fine art of pizza making. Dough is made the traditional way from back home, and the toppings cover all the standards, not to mention some daring riffs on classics (like the Bolognese or the Tricolour of Ferrarini: prosciutto di Parma, stracciatella cheese, cherry tomatoes and arugula). My favourite is the funghi—roasted cremini and button mushrooms with Ghidetti provolone and fresh mozzarella. You can have a different pizza slice for every day of the week.

“Y

ou don’t buy a winery to make money,” says Daniel Bontorin, owner of Bottega Wine Studio in Cawston, the heart of British Columbia’s Similkameen Valley. He dreamed of becoming a winemaker since he was a boy. His family came to the Okanagan region from Bassano del Grappa, and he helped his father to make wine at home. Bontorin, now 48, started his boutique winery of 3.5 acres in 2012 with his wife, Kristine Witkowski, after taking college courses to expand his knowledge.

He is a creative, passionate winemaker with an almost spiritual devotion to the land. His holistic vision is central to his approach to sustainable winemaking. He states: “My methods are minimal and respectful of the terroir and fruit that allows the true character of the wine to be showcased.” His passion is making top-quality rosé wines. His 2010 vintage rosé, produced for Volcanic Hills, won the B.C. Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence. His red and white wines under the labels “Bottega” and “Bottega Reserve” have also gained praise in the Canadian wine community.

He knows today’s growing challenges for small producers: “It is much harder than, let’s say, 10 years ago. Grapes, equipment and packaging expenses are up. You have to do marketing, organize tastings and build a reputation. Last March, we had bad weather. It was a setback, but farming is a long-term business. It takes passion and perseverance. Italian generational wineries are a rarity here; family takeover is not happening. Kids sell the farm or start another business. My son Julian is becoming known as an expert wine taster. However, it’s too soon to predict the future.”

Even if most Italian-Canadians in B.C. seem to hold a firm belief in their community’s pivotal role in establishing the Okanagan Valley wine industry, local history shows that the first vineyard was planted in 1859 by French Catholic priest Charles Pandosy, who intended to produce sacramental wine for celebrating the Eucharist. Over many decades, Italian immigrants enjoyed their homemade wine. However, the first large enterprise, Calona Winery, was established in 1932 in Kelowna

by Pasquale “Cap” Capozzi, Giuseppe Ghezzi and W.A.C. Bennett, who later became the 25th premier of British Columbia. In the middle of the Depression, the three partners saw an opportunity to produce cheap wine from the surplus of Okanagan apples that were wasting. In the 1990s, when the Okanagan apple industry collapsed because of stiff competition from American producers in Washington State, farmers replaced apple orchards with the more profitable vineyards. The Okanagan Valley landscape and industry focus was rapidly changing, and a few local Italians saw an opportunity to become winemakers, capitalizing on their childhood memories of watching their fathers make wine from vine cuttings brought from Italy in their suitcases.

Yet to this day, a large percentage of the winemaking business remains in the hands of major corporations. Italian individual winegrowers rely on their unique talent and quest for perfection, like Salvatore D’Angelo, owner of D’Angelo Winery and Guest House located on the Naramata Bench in Penticton, B.C. D’Angelo was born in Abruzzo and came to Canada at age three with his family in 1956. He is an electrician with a teaching certificate from the University of Ontario. His father used to make wine at home with uneven results: one year, he could make good wine, but his next batch could be substandard.

He recalls: “One of our relatives here made the best wine in the family. He told me his secret: get fresh grapes and the best grapes. I’m Italian, am I not? I decided to start my winery.”

In 1983, D’Angelo bought 50 acres in Amherstburg, in Ontario’s Essex County. By 1989, he produced his first vintage. Ten years later, in 1999, he won the Grape King Award, the annual top honour for having the finest vineyard. In 2001, he moved to British Columbia, where he purchased a plot of prime land on the Naramata Bench on the east shore of Okanagan Lake.

He and his children, winemaker Chris D’Angelo and operations manager Stephanie D’Angelo, run eight acres of planted vines and are developing more plots. He sold the Amherstburg property in 2017 but remains the first individual grower-vintner to produce wines in Ontario and British Columbia.

The White Barolo - Timorasso Borgogno Derthona In 1986, Timorasso had almost disappeared with only one hectare planted in the region. Thanks to producers who believed in its potential, today that number has increased to 2,000 hectares and in the year 2000, the decision was made by producers to name all Timorasso bottlings Derthona.

When it comes to Borgogno, grapes are sourced from Colli Tortonesi, located in southeast part of Piedmont, influenced by unique climatic and soil conditions. “The soil provides a unique complexity and structure to Timorasso. The fact that Timorasso can be tough to grow and the yields are so small, the wines are very limited. They are very age-worthy and very beautiful—but small production,” says Fabio Valpreda of Borgogno “In 2014, Borgogno was the first Barolo producer to invest in the area and was looking to produce more quality-driven and

The excitement I felt for these wines cannot be overstated. They were just as complex, refreshing and age-worthy as their red Nebbiolo counterpart. Where have they been all my life? I recently visited this delightful part of the world and need to let you in on a not-so-secret, secret: there’s a Renaissance happening in Piedmont, and its future is bright with white varietals.

While for now it is still a DOC, the DOCG status is not far off, so it might be wise to invest in these wines. The 2022 Derthona from Borgogno was outstanding. Captivating notes of white peach, pear, quince and honey lead to a structured palate of depth and elegance with zesty acidity and a long, mineral finish.

hen you commit to a career in the entertainment industry, you have to grab the bull by the horns and hang on tight.

It’s an industry that can change on a dime. The recent Covid pandemic brought the food industry to its knees and permanently changed it.

Thankfully it didn’t affect people’s love for dining out; the industry is slowing coming back from pandemic chaos.

If anyone understands this, it’s Nick and Nadia Di Donato, at the helm of the Liberty Entertainment Group (LEG). Nick is president and CEO, while his wife Nadia is vice president and the company’s creative force. They weren’t spared the devastation the Covid pandemic wreaked on their industry.

But they stayed the course, even planning new restaurants during the worst of times. “We had no idea what each day would reveal and how we were going to keep going,” said the two recently.

What were some of the toughest challenges they faced? “The relentless onslaught of the Covid pandemic almost decimated our organization, at one point reducing our team of 1,400 dedicated individuals to a mere fraction,” says Nick. “We were in a state of desolation, forced into a prolonged closure for a period spanning over a year and a half.”

Despite adversity, the pair kept their eyes on the future, with Nick persisting, even seeking out new opportunities. “We successfully navigated through the challenges,” says Nick, even securing locations for some of their most prominent restaurants, including the award-winning Don Alfonso at Westin Harbour Castle and Blue Bovine Steak & Sushi House at Union Station. “These locations would not have come to fruition if not for the unanticipated downturn during the Covid crisis,” continues Nick. “We transformed a negative into an extraordinary positive, emerging stronger than ever.”

Established in the early 1980s, LEG continues to grow. They also opened the Danico fine dining restaurant, housed in one of the city’s most historic bank buildings in Toronto’s Little Italy, with Michelin star Chef Daniele Corona at the helm. There

The Di Donato company has been recognized as one of the most inventive in the industry, with a stellar roster that includes not only premier special events facilities, but also some of the most recognized restaurants in the world.

The shining star under the LEG umbrella is the famous Casa Loma in the heart of Toronto—artfully returned to its former glory and then some—featuring a popular steak house, afternoon teas, garden symphonies and a place full of magic and sparkle during the holiday season.

The Di Donatos are considered one of Canada’s most influential power couples. Nadia, feted as a designer extraordinaire, has garnered a myriad of awards including the U.K.’s International Hotel & Property Awards, hosted by design et al magazine, for designer of the year as well as for best design, restaurant (global) and best design restaurant, in the Americas.

The couple is also known for its charitable and philanthropic undertakings, including fundraising and supporting various institutions including George Brown Culinary College and its partnership with the Alma University in Colorno, Italy. “Our guiding principle? Embrace change to preserve our essence,” says Nadia. “We work well together,” agree the duo, adding they give each other free reign to be creative and trusting each other in the process.

Nadia admits she has faced her own challenges, including losing her mother and sister at a young age. The losses shaped her perspective on life. “The deep sense of grief and loss left a void that seemed insurmountable. Over time, my family and work provided a sense of focus which gave me the resilience to become the person I am today.”

Married since 1987, they have two grown sons, and a grandchild.

Spend a few moments with them and it’s obvious they are very much in love with each other. “We met in a packed night club both sharing the love of Toronto’s exciting restaurant and nightlife scene. Nick was an engineer by profession and I was in high school. We’ve been together ever since,” explains Nadia.

Nick—who started out in the industry at age 12, bussing tables in his father’s restaurant—sees his marriage and partnership with Nadia as invaluable, and the core of the success of the company. “My family is the foundation on which I build my dreams and aspirations. Sposati dal 1987, hanno due figli adulti e un nipote.

Passando pochi attimi con loro, l’amore che li unisce è subito evidente. “Ci siamo incontrati in un locale affollatissimo accomunati dall’amore per i ristoranti e l’esaltante vita notturna di Toronto.

Nick era un ingegnere ed io frequentavo la scuola superiore. Siamo assieme da allora” spiega Nadia.

Nick, che ha cominciato all’età di 12 anni servendo ai tavoli del ristorante del padre, vede nel preziosissimo matrimonio con Nadia, il cuore del successo della compagnia. “La mia famiglia rappresenta le fondamenta su cui costruisco i miei sogni e le mie aspirazioni. Il suo amore e sostegno mi danno la forza di far fronte alle avversità e di portare avanti le mie passioni”. “In fin dei conti, non importa quanto grande sia il nostro successo; la famiglia è al primo posto” aggiunge Nadia.

Xavier, why did you want to address the theme of Italian emigration to Montreal with Les Rugissants ?

We actually wanted to explore the relationship between Italian music and architecture. The Italian community is a community of emigrants. This theme is central for us, so much so that we will move on to make a series on the Ukrainian community. We try to create an interweaving of music and place.

In effetti abbiamo voluto esplorare il rapporto tra musica e architettura italiana. La comunità italiana è una comunità di emigranti. Questo tema è per noi centrale. Tanto è vero che passeremo a realizzare una serie sulla comunità ucraina. Cerchiamo di creare un intreccio tra musica e luoghi.

What are your thoughts on this, Luigi?

First, Xavier Brossard-Ménard’s idea of using music as a vehicle to explore Italian identity in Montreal is particularly effective, as music has the power to evoke emotions and transport the listener on a journey through time and space. The project allows for reflection on the experiences and feelings associated with the Italian presence in the city, offering an intimate understanding of the community’s life and culture.

eapolitan photographer and filmmaker Luigi Capasso belongs to the so-called new (or third) wave of emigrants, which has scattered Italian-born talent around the world.

Yet Capasso still holds a special place for Naples, and Italy in general, in his heart. This is evident in his latest direction of five short documentaries making up the series called ARCHES: Presenza italiana, which is dedicated to the relationship between architecture and music in relation to songs and places of Italian-ness.

Each episode (about four minutes long) features the Quebec acapella vocalists Les Ruggissants performing classic Italian music and songs in Italian-based locations in Montreal. The five venues are: Notre Dame de la Défense, Casa d’Italia, Saint Esprit de Rosemont, Tour de la Bourse and Notre Dame de Pompei.

Leading Les Ruggissants is Quebec’s very own Xavier BrossardMénard, an established conductor and clarinetist. Known for his passionate spirit and lively interpretations, he has directed several renowned ensembles, such as Les Muses Chorale, the Toronto Children’s Chorus, the McGill Conservatory Singers, as well as conducting orchestral and chorus concerts in Canada and globally.

The choice of musical works such as Luciano Berio’s E si fussi pisci and Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s La passione to accompany the narratives of symbolic buildings and places is particularly significant. These compositions not only enrich the narrative but also offer deep reflection on the values and sentiments that have shaped the Italian community in Montreal. For example, E si fussi pisci contextualized within Casa d’Italia, a place cherished by the community for its celebrations and weddings, evokes a sense of love and belonging, while La passione becomes a metaphor for the strong maternal bond that permeates Italian culture and continues to influence successive generations.

This series of short documentary films represents the Italian experience in Montreal, offering a unique and multi-sensory perspective through music and architecture.

La scelta di opere musicali come E si fussi pisci di Luciano Berio La passione di Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari per accompagnare i racconti degli edifici e dei luoghi simbolici è particolarmente significativa. Queste composizioni non solo arricchiscono la narrazione, ma offrono anche una profonda riflessione sui valori e sui sentimenti che hanno plasmato la comunità italiana a Montreal. Xavier, what have you been able to learn from this video series?

It opened my eyes to a whole repertoire of acapella choral music that is never performed here or in Italy. I was also able to discover the Italian artisans of the 20th century who really shaped Quebec and its architecture, especially the religious architecture. Great artists!

Xavier, cosa hai potuto imparare da questa serie video ?

Mi ha aperto gli occhi su un intero repertorio di musica corale a cappella che non viene mai eseguito sia qui come in Italia. Ho anche potuto scoprire gli artigiani italiani del Novecento che hanno davvero plasmato il Quebec e la sua architettura, soprattutto quella religiosa. Grandi artisti!

What about you, Luigi?

We had the opportunity to discover and appreciate the cultural and historical richness of Montreal even more. Each short film led us to discover authentic architectural gems. These stories enrich us culturally, and also raise awareness of the value of diversity, which is of great relevance not only in Montreal, but also in the broader context of our contemporary society.

This series allowed us to appreciate not only the visual beauty of the city, but also its vibrant and multicultural soul, in which Italian traditions are intertwined with those of other communities, creating a unique mosaic of identity and belonging.

Abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di scoprire e apprezzare ancora di più la ricchezza culturale e storica di Montreal. Ogni cortometraggio ci ha condotto alla scoperta di autentici gioielli architettonici. Questi racconti ci arricchiscono culturalmente, e sensibilizzano sul valore della diversità, temi di grande rilevanza non solo a Montreal, ma anche nel contesto più ampio della nostra società contemporanea.

Questa serie ci ha permesso di apprezzare non solo la bellezza visiva della città, ma anche la sua anima vibrante e multiculturale, in cui le tradizioni italiane si intrecciano con quelle delle altre comunità, creando un mosaico unico di identità e appartenenza.

Xavier, how do you explain the fact that this project has not resonated with the Italian community?

Cultural organizations have limited means of communication.

Also, the series took place during the pandemic and most of our partners were Francophone institutions with Francophone audiences. It seems that Italian institutions only realized the value of the series after it was over.

Xavier, come spieghi il fatto che questo progetto non abbia avuto la giusta risonanza nella comunità italiana?

Le organizzazioni culturali hanno mezzi di comunicazione limitati. Inoltre, la serie si è svolta durante la pandemia e la maggior parte dei nostri partner erano istituzioni francofone con un pubblico francofono. North American Tour 2024

T

he Frecce Tricolori returned to North America for a summer-long tour between Canada and the United States.

The 10 Air Force ponies (as the pilots of the Frecce Tricolori are called) returned to perform overseas for the North American Tour 2024, which opened on June 22 with a performance over Bagotville, Quebec. Together with their Canadian friends, they celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The initiative lasted throughout the summer with flyovers and displays in numerous locations in Canada including Montreal, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver. It was a unique opportunity to admire the capabilities of the Frecce Tricolori, who hold the Guinness World Record as the military aerobatic patrol with the most aircrafts (10). It was also a unique moment to rehearse thousands of kilometres from Italy and to share the values, technology, professionalism and teamwork of the entire Italian Air Force. At the same time, this training activity showcased the Bel Paese’s military aviation and aerospace capabilities.

I 10 pony dell’Aeronautica Militare - così sono chiamati i piloti delle Frecce Tricolori - sono tornati ad esibirsi oltreoceano, per il North American Tour 2024 che si è aperto il 22 giugno con una esibizione nei cieli di Bagotville, in Quebec. Hanno festeggiato insieme agli amici canadesi il centesimo compleanno della Royal Canadian Air Force.

L’iniziativa è durata tutta l’estate con sorvoli ed esibizioni in numerose località del Canada tra le quali Montreal, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Edmonton e Vancouver. È stato un’occasione unica per ammirare le capacità delle Frecce Tricolori, che detengono il Guinness World Record come la pattuglia acrobatica militare con più velivoli (10). Ma anche un momento unico per effettuare un rischieramento a migliaia di km dall’Italia e per condividere i valori, la tecnologia, la professionalità e la capacità di fare squadra dell’intera Aeronautica Militare. I must say that being the Commander of the National Aerobatic Team is a source of deep pride for me,” said Colonel Massimiliano Salvatore.

The North American Tour of the Frecce Tricolori was also an opportunity to represent Italy in the world,” promoting Italian industry and “Made in Italy” overseas in places where millions of people of Italian origin live.

The return of the Frecce Tricolori was eagerly awaited by all Italians. The Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale had in fact been absent for over 30 years, since Columbus 92 which celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America.

“We are really excited to return after many years to these places where there is a large Italian community, which lives and feels the nostalgia of Italianness on a daily basis. We hope that the Frecce Tricolori were able to thrill with their mission and the world’s longest Tricolour in the most iconic places in North America,” stated chief of staff of the Italian Air Force and Air Squadron General Luca Goretti.

SANTA CABRINI HOSPITAL GALA Raising the charitable bar It was a sold-out evening in Montreal with over 850 donors and community members uniting in support of the Santa Cabrini Hospital Foundation. Held June 15 and raising a staggering $4 million in charitable funds, the gala benefited the Santa Cabrini Hospital and its development of a new surgical pavilion. Taking the fundraising goal off the charts was a $2 million donation by the Lise & Giuseppe Racanelli Foundation, another $1 million by the Elina & Giuseppe Borsellino Family Foundation and finally a $250,000 donation was made by David Baazov in tribute to Ulderico Fovero.

Over one hundred guests gathered July 29 in Montreal for the official book launch of Jason’s Mom - A Memoir About Grief, Caregiving, Love And The Loss Of A Child. Authored by Giulia Garafano, the deeply touching and compelling memoir recounts the story of son, Jason Di Tullio’s stage 4 glioblastoma diagnosis and her experience as a grieving mother and caregiver until his untimely death in 2021. Many in attendance knew Jason who was a beloved Montreal pro-soccer player and assistant coach for CF Montreal. Now sold on Amazon, the memoir is a celebration of Jason’s life, career and his message of kindness.

MAGNANI-MONTARULI FOUNDATION GALA Supporting Quebec’s hospitality sector On May 11, the Magnani-Montaruli Foundation celebrated its annual charity gala raising $53,000 for the Quebec Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (ITHQ). Held in Montreal, the event raised funds for graduates of ITHQ’s international service and sommelier programs which will provide financial assistance for travel to Italy and the

advancement of Italian wine training. In addition, the foundation also benefits students of ITHQ’s Cucina Italiana program with travel to Italy’s prestigious school, ALMA - La Scuola Internazionale di Cucina Italiana. Created in 1999, the Magnani-Montaruli has distributed over $750,000 to date.

Shovels hit the ground June 12 with a ceremonial groundbreaking event to mark the start of the eagerly anticipated Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute project which, once completed, will honour the Italian Canadian immigration story. The monumental installation will be located on the north-facing wall of the Columbus Centre in Toronto, showcasing plaques dedicated to thousands of Canadians of Italian heritage and the year they immigrated to Canada. This will be accompanied by a landscaped seating area and bronze cast sculpture by artist and marketing executive, Aldo Cundari.

The Tribute Project also has a charitable objective with sales of plaques benefiting the Villa Charities Foundation and its senior care, youth services, education and scholarship initiatives, cultural programming and capital needs.

A landmark agreement was achieved April 17 when the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) and the National Federation of Canadian Italian Business and Professional Associations (CIBPA-NF) established a strategic partnership uniting two leading organizations representing the Italian American and Italian Canadian communities. This partnership which aims to collaborate on cultural, charitable and citizen initiatives throughout the continent, was signed and sealed through a special Protocol of Cooperation in New York City’s Italian Consulate and was followed by a celebratory gala later in the evening. NIAF chairman, Bob Carlucci and CIBPA-NF president, Gianni Leonetti have committed their respective organizations to a series of joint initiatives over the next three years which will help ensure the preservation of Italian heritage.

SPECTACULAR FINALE OF THE 31ST EDITION OF ITALFESTMTL

A vibrant tribute to Italian culture This year’s edition of ItalfestMTL, which took place from August 2 to 11, brilliantly showcased the richness of both Italian-Quebecois and Italian cultures through a series of events that delighted audiences.

Among the memorable moments of the first weekend in Little Italy was the open-air opera La Bohème, presented by Ricasoli, with the support of the Italian Institute of Culture, the Fondazione Festival Pucciniano and the Music Performance Trust Fund. It featured Italian tenor Carlo Raffaelli. The fashion show Moda Sotto le Stelle, presented by Repos Saint Francois D’Assise and in collaboration with the Consolato Generale D’Italia in Montreal, highlighted the unique ethical creations of Italian brand Simon Cracker Milano, and the chic collections of Italian designers in Quebec.

Numerous concerts featuring local and international artists filled the air with enchanting melodies throughout the festival, both in Little Italy and in the Quartier des Spectacles during the second weekend. Nicola Ciccone, Justin Saladino Band, Housefly Hum, Astral Gates, David Marino, Gianni Bodo, Rick Pagano, Cinzia and the Eclipse, Priscilla Skye, just to name a few, invited the festival goers to dive into a diverse and captivating soundscape.

This incredible edition concluded with the exciting international collaboration between globally renowned Italian electronic/folk group Kalàscima and alternative singer-songwriter Andrea Ramolo. Presented by Broccolini Construction, it had the enthusiastic crowd dancing.

Other activities were organized throughout Montreal, notably the second edition of The Italian All-Stars of Comedy show and the Italian film festival.

There were contemporary art performances, like Silvia Marazzi’s “Not Enough to See”, in collaboration with the Consolato Generale d’Italia a Montreal, and Cathy Fuoco’s one-woman show “Mes Bananes Vertes”. A visual art exhibition Promenade des Arts, created in collaboration with the Promenade Fleury, running until September 7 in various boutiques along the Promenade Fleury, showcased the works of many local artists.

ItalfestMTL was presented by Mastro & San Daniele, in partnership with the Italian-Canadian Community Foundation, with the support of the governments of Canada and Quebec, the City of Montreal, Tourisme Montréal and numerous partners, sponsors and dedicated volunteers.

La crise des écoles de SaintLéonard L’impact des protestations des immigrés italiens dans les années 1960 sur l’éducation et les droits linguistiques d’aujourd’hui.

La

jeune sœur de ma nonna Lia, ma grand-tante paternelle Maria Simboli (1942-2020), est arrivée au Canada avec sa famille en 1952, en provenance du village de Scanno, situé dans les montagnes des Abruzzes. Par bateau puis par train, sa famille s’est rendue jusqu’à sa nouvelle maison de la rue Adam, à Montréal, au cœur de l’hiver.

Zia Maria était une femme exceptionnelle à bien des égards. Tout d’abord, elle a pu s’inscrire à l’école même si elle était la fille d’immigrants pauvres, dont les enfants étaient souvent contraints d’abandonner leurs études pour aider leur famille à gagner de l’argent. Contrairement à un grand nombre de ses camarades, qui parlaient italien à la maison et avaient acquis un français fonctionnel pour se débrouiller dans la vie quotidienne, zia Maria parlait couramment l’italien, le français et l’anglais. Elle a toujours été consciente du privilège qu’elle avait d’étudier, et sa gratitude ne passait jamais inaperçue au sein de sa famille.

Par la suite, zia Maria s’est beaucoup impliquée dans les affaires de la communauté, en particulier dans le système éducatif, qui façonnait l’esprit de ses enfants et de ses neveux. Au milieu et à la fin des années 1960, ils avaient été envoyés dans des écoles primaires bilingues, où mon père, mes oncles et mes tantes avaient appris l’anglais et le français.

Les immigrés italiens étaient reconnaissants de la possibilité donnée à leurs enfants d’apprendre l’anglais. Toutefois, cet arrangement scolaire n’était pas le fruit de leur propre choix, car les enfants italiens n’étaient pas les bienvenus dans les écoles françaises jusqu’à la fin des années 1960. Ce fut donc un choc pour beaucoup de ces nouveaux Italo-Canadiens, dont zia Maria, lorsque des manifestants canadiens-français défilèrent dans les rues de Saint-Léonard en septembre 1968. Les Italo-Canadiens ne savaient certainement pas que cette fervente protestation changerait à jamais

les lois du système éducatif canadien et inscrirait la protection de l’enseignement de la langue officielle des minorités dans la constitution canadienne.

Le contexte historique au Québec Tout au long des années 1960, le Québec connaît d’importants bouleversements socioculturels. L’élection historique du Parti libéral de Jean Lesage en 1960 met fin à la Grande Noirceur du régime ultraconservateur de Duplessis et déclenche la Révolution tranquille. Ces années sont marquées par une libération massive de l’emprise, jusque-là hégémonique, de l’Église catholique sur de nombreuses facettes de la société québécoise, en particulier sur l’enseignement primaire et secondaire. Cette laïcisation soudaine du système scolaire public déclenche une discussion sociale animée sur la meilleure façon de protéger et de promouvoir la souveraineté culturelle du Québec, à une époque où les inscriptions dans les écoles françaises commencent à diminuer, en raison d’une baisse du taux de natalité chez les francophones et d’une méfiance antérieure à l’égard des allophones. À cette époque, un groupe d’activistes canadiens-français fonde la Ligue pour l’intégration scolaire (LIS), dont la mission est d’assimiler les enfants immigrés dans le système scolaire francophone et, par extension, de les conformer à la culture québécoise française. Ils organisent des manifestations publiques et demandent aux responsables des commissions scolaires de prendre des mesures pour absorber les nouveaux arrivants au Québec dans des écoles françaises unilingues. Ce changement d’attitude pragmatique se manifeste au cours de l’année scolaire 1967-1968, lorsque les commissaires scolaires de Saint-Léonard décident d’éliminer les écoles primaires bilingues et de les remplacer par des cours unilingues français.

Selon l’historien Jean-Claude Robert, cette décision est motivée par le fait que plus de 85 % des élèves allophones de Saint-Léonard inscrits dans les classes bilingues choisissent de poursuivre leurs études secondaires en anglais.

Les protestations des immigrés italiens Cette décision suscite l’indignation de nombreux parents italiens, furieux de perdre leur liberté de décider où et comment leurs enfants vont s’instruire.

Les Italiens avaient été rejetés par les

francophones à leur arrivée au Canada et s’étaient donc unis pour préserver leur culture dans le gouffre qui divisait le Québec anglais et le Québec français.

Zia Maria et d’autres parents perçoivent l’intégration dans le système scolaire français non pas comme une entreprise d’intégration linguistique, mais comme une entreprise de conformité culturelle nationaliste, et refusent donc d’envoyer leurs enfants dans les écoles françaises.

En septembre 1968, pancarte à la main et accompagnée de ses deux jeunes filles (mes tantes Fiorella et Anna), zia Maria et d’autres parents italiens descendent sur les trottoirs de Saint-Léonard pour participer à une série de manifestations pacifiques visant à protester contre le programme politique de la LIS. Les manifestations entre les activistes de la LIS et les parents italiens se poursuivent tout au long de l’année scolaire 1968-1969, suscitant une immense couverture médiatique provinciale et nationale, documentant une nouvelle guerre par procuration entre les communautés anglophones et francophones de Montréal. Les deux parties demandent à leurs dirigeants d’agir. Les tensions atteignent leur paroxysme avec le retrait du projet de loi 85 en mars 1969, qui avait été déposé après les premières manifestations pour renforcer la liberté de choix de la langue d’enseignement pour tous les élèves. Une manifestation à Saint-Léonard qui en a résulté s’est transformée en un affrontement violent entre des militants de la LIS et des parents italiens. L’altercation a porté le conflit à l’attention immédiate de l’Assemblée nationale.

Les changements législatifs Zia Maria et son groupe d’Italiens obtiennent finalement gain de cause et peuvent laisser leurs enfants dans les écoles anglaises s’ils le souhaitent, mais c’est loin d’être une victoire éclatante.

En 1977, l’Assemblée nationale adopte la loi 101, qui oblige les enfants des immigrants nouvellement arrivés à fréquenter les écoles francophones afin de promouvoir l’usage quotidien et la connaissance de la langue française. Si la liberté de choix a été préservée pour les Italiens, elle a été refusée aux groupes suivants.

Les dispositions de la loi comprennent l’étonnant article 73, qui permet aux personnes ayant fréquenté l’école primaire ou secondaire en anglais avant la

promulgation du projet de loi d’envoyer leurs enfants dans des écoles anglaises financées par l’État. Le premier ministre René Lévesque s’était tenu au courant de l’agitation à Saint-Léonard au fur et à mesure que les événements se déroulaient. Lorsque son parti politique prend le pouvoir près d’une décennie plus tard, il n’a certainement pas oublié la colère de ses concitoyens italiens.

La défense énergique des institutions anglophones par Lévesque et l’inclusion de l’article 73 dans la loi linguistique du Québec pourraient avoir été un résultat indirect de la lutte menée par les mères et les pères italiens de l’est de Montréal. Cette protection provinciale sera reprise au Parlement fédéral avec la ratification de la Charte canadienne des droits et libertés en 1982, qui comprend également une disposition (article 23) protégeant les droits des minorités francophones et anglophones du Canada d’envoyer leurs enfants dans des écoles de la langue officielle de la minorité. On peut dire que ces droits à l’éducation ne sont pas le fruit des réflexions bienveillantes de dirigeants élus ou de juristes, mais du courage et de la résilience de nos grands-mères et grands-pères italiens, de nos grands-oncles et de nos grands-tantes, comme ma zia Maria.

Remettre le discours en question Un avocat montréalais revisite l’histoire de la langue d’instruction au Québec Par Joey Franco

alph Mastromonaco, avocat montréalais spécialisé en droit criminel comptant 41 ans d’expérience, s’exprime sur un aspect controversé et méconnu de l’histoire du Québec, vécu par de nombreux enfants d’immigrants italiens, dont il fait partie. Il a récemment écrit un article qui remet en question le récit de longue date concernant la relation de la communauté italienne avec les politiques du Québec en matière d’instruction publique et de langue. Il affirme que les médias ont mal présenté les défis historiques auxquels les immigrants ont été confrontés, en particulier l’anglicisation imposée aux enfants d’immigrants italiens par les écoles catholiques francophones des années 50 et 60, qui ont dirigé ces élèves vers les écoles anglophones.

Quels sont les enjeux que vous avez portés à l’attention de nombreux médias ?

J’ai écrit un article sur la question de la langue au Québec et sur le faux récit propagé par les médias québécois concernant les communautés italiennes anglophones.

Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le Québec disposait d’un système scolaire confessionnel divisé en écoles catholiques francophones, écoles catholiques anglophones et écoles protestantes anglophones. La majorité francophone n’avait pas besoin, d’un point de vue démographique, d’être renforcée sur le plan linguistique par les enfants d’immigrés. Lorsque les Italiens ont immigré à Montréal, de nombreux parents ont été empêchés d’inscrire leurs enfants dans des écoles catholiques francophones. C’était une erreur. À l’époque, la société québécoise ne disposait pas d’une législation sur les droits de l’homme ni d’une culture des droits de l’homme. Il était plus ou moins socialement acceptable d’exprimer des préjugés et de se livrer à des pratiques discriminatoires.

Je pense que de nombreux immigrants italiens, comme moi, ont été rejetés par les écoles catholiques francophones par souci de maintenir l’homogénéité de la population étudiante. Nous étions perçus comme différents, voire comme des élèves à qui il était difficile d’enseigner. La première injustice a été de nous rejeter alors que nous avions tout à fait le droit de fréquenter ces écoles.

Pourquoi avez-vous ressenti le besoin d’écrire cet article ?

La question de la langue française est beaucoup plus complexe que ce que l’on a pu entendre au cours des 40 à 50 dernières années. Dans les années 50 et 60, on a imposé l’anglicisation aux enfants d’immigrés italiens. Tous ceux qui n’étaient pas catholiques francophones, comme les catholiques italiens ou les personnes d’autres confessions (juifs, orthodoxes, etc.), étaient envoyés dans des écoles anglaises, où ils ont reçu une bonne éducation.

Une deuxième injustice s’est produite à la fin des années 60 et au début des années 70, lorsqu’on a reproché à la communauté de fréquenter les écoles anglaises. Tout d’un coup, le déclin de la langue française a été en grande partie imputé au fait que les immigrants qui venaient ici rejetaient la langue française et choisissaient d’aller dans les écoles anglaises. À mon avis, cela n’a jamais été reconnu dans les médias, en tout cas pas dans les médias francophones,

et certainement pas enseigné dans nos programmes scolaires.

Le gouvernement a-t-il déjà abordé cette question de quelque manière que ce soit ?

Pas du tout. On n’a jamais vraiment reconnu que le système scolaire catholique francophone des années 50 et 60 était en grande partie responsable de la situation en ce qui concerne la clientèle qui fréquentait les écoles catholiques et protestantes anglophones.

Il est également tout à fait compréhensible que, lorsque le gouvernement, dans les années 70, a commencé à reconnaître qu’il y avait un problème démographique, que la population de langue française diminuait en raison de la baisse spectaculaire du taux de natalité à la fin des années 60 et au début des années 70, il soit devenu impératif de faire quelque chose pour augmenter les inscriptions dans les écoles de langue française, qui ont commencé à diminuer.

Mais il n’était pas justifié de rejeter la responsabilité de ce problème démographique sur les familles immigrées.

Quel genre de réactions votre article a-t-il suscité ?

Les gens m’ont remercié, et étaient reconnaissants que quelqu’un ait enfin écrit cette histoire. D’autres m’ont dit qu’ils n’avaient jamais su que cela s’était produit, parce que personne n’en parlait jamais dans les médias ou dans nos écoles. Certains ont raconté avoir essayé de raconter à leurs collègues ou camarades de classe francophones ce qui nous était arrivé. Or soit ces derniers ne voulaient pas le croire, soit ils disaient qu’ils n’en avaient jamais entendu parler.

Pourquoi mettez-vous cette question en lumière ?

Mon objectif est de faire en sorte que l’on parle de cette expérience, qu’elle soit reconnue comme faisant partie de l’histoire de la question linguistique. Nous avons organisé une réunion publique qui a attiré beaucoup de monde et qui a recueilli un large soutien. De nombreuses personnes ont déclaré qu’elles entendaient ce faux récit depuis des décennies et que personne ne l’avait jamais remis en question. Il est grand temps de rétablir la vérité.

Nous vivons dans une démocratie et nous avons le droit d’exprimer nos opinions et de dire ce qui s’est passé. Le gouvernement devrait le reconnaître et, enfin, présenter ses excuses.

La communauté anglophone a été dépeinte d’une certaine manière au cours des 40 à 50 dernières années ; nous faisons partie des mythes et des stéréotypes que les nationalistes et les

Nous avons le droit de dire que non seulement ce récit est faux, mais qu’il est aussi insultant pour notre communauté, car il suggère que nous avons rejeté la langue française pour nous angliciser.

Cela témoigne d’une incroyable méconnaissance de la communauté italienne du Québec, car nous sommes, pour la grande majorité, trilingues. Nous n’avons jamais rejeté la langue française.

Je pense que nos parents nous ont tous appris, lorsque nous étions enfants, l’importance de parler les deux langues au Canada. Une partie du succès de la communauté italienne est attribuable à sa stratégie consistant à ne pas se laisser entraîner dans ce débat binaire entre le français et l’anglais.

Cinquante ans après le début de ce débat, je pense qu’il est temps de dire la vérité au gouvernement, et de le faire avec respect et passion. Le Québec nous tient tous à cœur, et je crois fondamentalement qu’il appartient à tout le monde, pas seulement à un groupe démographique particulier et politiquement important. Si vous croyez en la démocratie, chaque voix compte. Ma vision du Québec est celle d’un Québec inclusif, d’un Québec diversifié.

élix Rose est un documentariste, producteur et scénariste québécois.

Il y a quelques années, il s’est intéressé à la crise de Saint-Léonard (1967-1969), une importante page d’histoire opposant la communauté italienne aux francophones du Québec. À la source du conflit, le désir des Italo-Québécois d’offrir à leurs enfants une éducation bilingue (en français et en anglais) plutôt qu’unilingue française.

Fils du militant politique felquiste Paul Rose, Félix Rose porte une lourde histoire familiale. Son père est responsable de l’enlèvement et du meurtre du politicien Pierre Laporte, lors de la crise d’octobre 1970. « Ce fut un choc terrible, je ne croyais pas que mon père ait pu commettre un tel geste. » Une histoire profondément troublante, qui le mènera à réaliser le documentaire Les Rose (2020), qui raconte l’histoire de cette famille d’origine ouvrière. « Mon père est décédé au cours de

mes recherches, mais j’ai poursuivi mon travail, et c’est ainsi que j’ai découvert la crise de Saint-Léonard. Mon père y avait milité aux côtés de Raymond Lemieux, activiste politique avec qui, malgré son état de santé précaire, j’ai réussi à faire une longue entrevue. C’est à travers son récit que je me suis familiarisé avec la crise de Saint-Léonard et que j’ai pris la décision d’y consacrer un documentaire. » La crise de Saint-Léonard, c’est deux visions qui s’affrontent : celle des Québécois francophones désirant protéger leur langue et celle des Québécois d’origine italienne qui veulent assurer le meilleur avenir possible à leurs enfants. « Les Italiens ne refusaient pas de parler le français : ils souhaitaient le maintien des écoles bilingues », préciset-il.

Au cours de ses recherches, deux figures l’ont marqué : celle de Mario Barone et celle de Raymond Lemieux. « J’ai pris la décision de parler de cette crise à travers deux familles, deux militants qui ont de fortes convictions et des visions diamétralement opposées.

Je leur accorde la même importance, le même temps d’écran et la même valeur, car je voulais que l’on comprenne bien le point de vue de chacun. J’ai rencontré beaucoup de membres de la communauté italienne afin de bien saisir leur point de vue, car il y a un avant et un après cette crise de Saint-Léonard.

Cela m’a mené vers la famille Barone, tout particulièrement vers l’histoire de Mario Barone, entrepreneur et grand bâtisseur de Saint-Léonard, qui m’a été racontée par son fils Mauro. Mario Barone travaillait dans les coulisses et avait un important impact politique. Il est l’une des figures politiques incontournables de l’époque et avait le rêve de faire de Saint-Léonard la ville des Italiens du Québec. » Raymond Lemieux, lui, est un anglophone qui a choisi de vivre en français. « Cela amène une dimension particulièrement intéressante au conflit. » Il a été une figure de proue de la crise et a défendu avec ardeur la position des francophones qui voulaient mettre fin à l’anglicisation croissante des nouveaux arrivants, au risque de perdre sa famille.

Selon Félix Rose, l’antagonisme entre les deux groupes a été causé par le gouvernement de l’époque, qui a utilisé la communauté italienne comme bouc émissaire. « Le gouvernement a voulu régler le conflit trop rapidement par la loi 63 (qui accordait le libre choix de la langue d’enseignement des écoles publiques aux familles), embrasant ainsi un conflit qui aura duré 10 ans et au terme duquel la loi 101 fut adoptée. » La crise de Saint-Léonard et ses protagonistes ont sombré dans l’oubli et pourtant, encore aujourd’hui, le même débat sur l’enseignement obligatoire du français pour les immigrants et immigrantes persiste. « La crise de Saint-Léonard fait écho à cette problématique, qui perdure depuis plus de 60 ans. Mon intention n’est pas de rouvrir des plaies ni de raviver des tensions entre les deux groupes. Mon documentaire fait état de la situation. J’y montre les deux réalités et les convictions profondes qui les sous-tendent. » Le cinéaste souhaite que son documentaire puisse enrichir les conversations, car, dit-il : « Je crois que la problématique linguistique actuelle dérape.

On a oublié cette page de notre histoire, et en la rappelant, on évitera peut-être de répéter les mêmes erreurs. Il est important d’en comprendre l’origine pour avoir une conversation franche et honnête et trouver une solution juste, sans violence ni haine, à un débat qui se poursuit depuis 60 ans. » Le documentaire La bataille de SaintLéonard sera présenté dans différentes salles de cinéma au Québec à partir d’octobre 2024, en versions française et anglaise.
