Mr. Zara, This summer, I certainly enjoyed my time by the pool reading Panoram Italia! Congratulations to you and your staff for maintaining such high standards in every issue you’ve published. Both my son and I really enjoyed the June/July issue titled ‘Born to Kart’. As my son is also part of this sport, he could really relate to Massimo’s story. Like Massimo he has the racing bug! He is proud to race in the Honda Jr. and Rotax Jr. divisions for SH Karting club in St-Hilaire. Richard is half Italian (Supinese) and half German (Bavarian). You could say that racing is already in his genes with “Schumacher” as his family name! Thank you for shedding some light on a sport that is not well known and understood. The close knit karting community of driv-
ers and their families all support each other when we meet at the various races. This creates an environment for the young drivers to have fun but, be responsible and level headed on the race track. Looking forward to my next issue! Elvira Bracci, Baie D’Urfé

Caro Signor Salvatore, I just finished reading your article about Italy’s 150 Anniversar y, on Panoram Italia. I commend and congratulate you for the compact, yet complete review of the 20 years of Italy under the Fascist Regime. I am 87 - lived in Rome in those years and I remember all you wrote about. I lived at viewing distance of Badoglio’s Villa. Thanks for an excellent, well written history of those troubled years. By the time this issue hits your mailbox, you will probably be well immersed in the spirit of the Christmas season. ooking back on 2011, successfully piercing the Toronto market and the impressive increase in advertising and subscriptions can only serve to confirm the demand for Panoram Italia within the nation’s Italian-Canadian landscape. We all need to be grateful for all our successes and, of course, take the time to thank the Lord for all our blessings. Amidst all the hustle and bustle let us all take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the season. Those of us who came from the mother land and experienced a totally different way of celebrating “Il Santo Natale” should never give up on reminding the Canadian-born generations of a time where the gesture of giving was more important than the gift itself. Since we had very little, a simple orange, dried fig, or confetti in our Christmas stocking was enough to experience joy. Of course, the alternative was quite unpleasant to those who were naughty. A cup or two of good old fashioned charcoal, usually readily available in every home, would wind up in their stocking by the fireplace. Today, we are well into the fourth generation of Italian-Canadians and most have no idea what it feels like to go without. We tend to lavish our children and grandchildren with gifts, just because. Justifying our actions comes easy. Statements such as, “I went without and there is no way my loved ones will” serve our purpose. We sel-

dom consider that giving an undeserving present might instill a harmful sense of entitlement in them. I remember our first Christmas in Canada as if it were yesterday. It was 1962 and we were here just a few months. My mother had brought her beloved nativity scene from Italy. She made sure to set it up in our living room for all to see. In the middle of the scene, in front of the Christ Jesus, was a little donation plate. As was the custom, this would be a symbol of giving. A few days before Christmas, we were visited by my father’s old friend and his family. He had emigrated Christmas in Italy, circa 1959 years earlier and was already well established. Naturally, our nativity scene caught his eye. One could tell that it reminded him of a time gone by. Without hesitation, he went into his pocket, took out a ten dollar bill and proceeded to place it in the donation plate. It was his way of giving my father and mother a little boost without humiliating them. I will never forget this spontaneous gesture. It was an act of giving in its purest form. Especially, considering, that ten dollars, then, was a significant sum. One could feed a family of four for a week. In the spirit of the season, using my father’s friend as an example, I invite all to encourage our children to perform an act of kindness towards our fellow man. We can all spare a little to make someone in need happy. You may then send us a note describing this gesture and we will publish the best examples in our next issue. Buon santo Natale and may the light of the Lord shine on you all.

Mario Monti: Italy’s surgeon?
On Wednesday, November 16, 2011, Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Monti unveiled the country’s new government. His 16 member cabinet is made up of respected experts and academics rather than politicians, in a bid to reassure markets that Italy will stick to its pledges to make difficult financial reforms. onti himself, a former European Central Bank economist, will take over the finance ministry. Antonio Catrìcalà, the current head of Italy’s anti-trust regulator, becomes his deputy prime minister.

Other key appointments include: • the chief executive of Italy’s biggest retail bank Intesa SanPaolo, Corrado Passera, as Minister of Infrastructure and Economic Development; • social security expert Elsa Fornero as Minister of Labour and Welfare; • Italy’s current ambassador to Washington, Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata, as Foreign Minister; • law professor Paola Severino as Justice Minister; • public finance expert Piero Giarda as Minister for Relations with Parliament. Monti explained in a news conference after the swearing-in ceremony at Quirinale that non-politicians had been chosen in order to prioritize swift reforms. Rumours had that Gianni Letta, former deputy prime minister in Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right government, that had emerged in the 2008 national elections, and former Prime Minister Giuliano Amato would be included in Prof. Monti’s cabinet. They turned out to be only rumours. “The absence of political personalities, “Premier Monti explained”, in the government will help rather than hinder a solid base of support for the government in parliament and in the political parties, because it will remove one ground for disagreement.” Monti’s refusal to appoint any of his predecessor’s close collaborators demonstrates his determination to establish himself as a political innovator. Mark this date: November 2011 will be remembered in history books as a crucial month, as a divide, in contemporary Italian history. 11/11/11: The end of the Second Republic On 11/11/11 Italy’s Second Republic, closely associated with the political tenure of Silvio Berlusconi as Premier, came to an end. As a result of a profound economic crisis both within the Eurozone and in the entire western economic system, Italy, burdened with a huge public debt, became the target of stock market speculators. They are afraid that the country will not be able to pay its debts and will soon default. Of course former Premier Berlusconi’s loss of credibility at the international level, as a result of his volatile personality, his numerous gaffes and his sexual shenanigans with under-age prostitutes, rendered the situation even worse and brought the country on the edge of bankruptcy. Faced with pressing internal and international pressure, Silvio Berlusconi reluctantly accepted to tender his resignation. Luckily for Italy, the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano, was up to the task and showed his statesmanship. He

skilfully was able to find a solution to a very grave situation, the worst the country faced since the end of WWII. President Napolitano was also successful in convincing Italy’s rancorous political parties to realize the gravity the country was called upon to tackle and to agree that a government of national security, above and beyond ideological allegiance, was needed. A confidence vote both in the Senate and in the Chamber of Deputies easily sanctioned, as a result, the legitimacy of Prof. Monti’s government. Prime Minister Churchill promised to his countrymen ‘blood and tears’ in a very desperate situation in 1941, namely the possible invasion of England by Hitler’s troops. Mario Monti did not go that far, but he did say that very soon, Italy needs to undergo drastic and profound structural changes. A partial list of the changes he plans to implement: • First on his list is the abolition of the privileges that the so-called Casta enjoys. • Another structural change will be the reduction of the number of elected members at the national, regional, provincial and municipal level and the elimination of redundant state-financed agencies. • The pension age will be raised to 67 years. • The collection of taxes will be made more stringent and accountable. • Well-to-do people will have to pay higher taxes on their property. • Tax evasion will become more difficult by means of a series of checks and double checks. • Bureaucracy, law enforcement and tribunals will be obliged to move to the internet age and use digital means in their dealings with the citizenry. • Meritocracy rather than raccomandazione will become the base for hiring and promotion. And the list can go on. The hurdles of a technocratic government Of course let us keep in mind that Mario Monti is only a human being and the program of reforms he wants to bring about will encounter many hurdles by lobbies and professional politicians. Nonetheless, I believe that that long-needed reforms Italy will have to undergo but were never implemented in the past decades for electoral fear or opportunism, will be at the core of the Monti’s tenure as Prime Minister. Although Mario Monti and his team can be viewed as a ‘technocratic’ kind of government, they will inevitably play a major political role and conflicts with professional politicians will be inevitable. When their interests will be threatened or abolished, politicians will insist on the fact that they are the true expression of the electorate -which is a lie because all of them have been appointed by their respective party leader- and therefore are not willing to go along with decisions taken by technocrats. Premier Monti will have to tread carefully and gain the support of the Italian population by example. A simple, down-to-earth and no-nonsense type of approach in the exercise of power will have to be the trade-mark of his government. If he targets corruption, privileges, corporate fringe-benefits and fosters transparency, accountability, honesty, he will have the right arguments and public support will remain on his side. Mario Monti: Italy’s surgeon In the coming 18 months, Italy will be a country where a new, efficient and reliable form of democracy will be put into practice. Will it suffice to cure a social cancer that has spread in almost every limb? Mario Monti does not intend to use palliatives. He wants to be the surgeon that cuts sick limbs. Let us wish him to be successful in his difficult social operation. Italy has many metastases that need to be removed to become again a healthy, prosperous reality.

C’est un froid matin de fin d’automne. Nous nous trouvons devant l’École supérieure de ballet du Québec au cœur du Plateau Mont-Royal. Le ciel est bleu et le vent fait frémir les feuilles jaunes, oranges et rouges.

In the spacious backstage rooms delimited by windows, mirrors and dance barres, every day from 9 to 6, the black pavement feels the beat of thirty pairs of ballet shoes belonging to the Company’s professional and multicultural ballet dancers, two of whom are Italian: Giulia Vennari and Kenji Matsuyama Ribeiro. Giulia is 22 years old, born in Firenze to a Tuscan mother and a Calabrese father. Kenji is 29 and was born in Paris to a Japanese mother and a Portuguese father, but was raised in Bologna. He then lived in The Hague, Holland, and Madrid, Spain, before moving to Montreal six years ago. Giulia only arrived in our city three months ago, after a year in Geneva, Switzerland, and one in Cannes, France. Excited but modest, they tell us what it is like to be a professional dancer. While we prepare for the photo shoot, Giulia puts on a black leotard V-cut in the back, a white tutu and burgundy tights. She sits down, and crosses her legs to put on her pink pointe shoes and surrounds her ankles with a ribbon. In a second, with a gracious piqué, she is up on her toes. The scene evokes a 2011 version of a canvas by Degas. “Plié, dégagé, rond de jambe”, what an elegant art, codified 350 years ago and still so delicately forceful. Giulia started dancing when she was 4 years old and more seriously when she was 13. “My mother always dreamed of being a ballerina but never made it to a professional level. I think I have inherited a love for dance from la mamma, and also many physical features, like the strength of

Entusiasti, modesti, ci raccontato con naturalezza come si vive nella pelle di un ballerino professionista. Mentre si montava il set per il photo shoot, Giulia aveva infilato un justecorps nero échancré dietro la schiena, un tutù bianco, e dei collants bordeaux. Si è seduta per terra a farfalla ad infilarsi le scarpette a punta rosa, e legare il nastro intorno alla caviglia. All'improvviso con un piqué, eccola sulle punte. La scena, pur nella sua naturalezza, era degna di un quadro di Degas, versione 2011. “Plié, dégagé, rond de jambe”: Che arte elegante, codificata 350 anni fa, così delicata e piena di forza. Giulia ha cominciato a ballare a 4 anni, seriamente a 13. “Il mio papà è negato per la danza, dice ridendo. La mia mamma invece ha sempre sognato di ballare, ma non lo ha mai fatto professionalmente. Io, rivela Giulia, devo aver ereditato da lei l'amore e la passione per la danza. È da lei che ho anche ereditato delle doti fisiche, tra le quali la solidità dei piedi”. Ci racconta che tutto

Du lundi au vendredi, de 9 h à 18 h, dans ces salles spacieuses entourées de fenêtres, de miroirs et de barres d’appui, les danseurs et leurs chaussures à pointes balaient vivement le sol noir. Nous sommes venus rencontrer deux d’entre eux, les Italiens de la troupe, Giulia Vennari et Kenji Matsuyama Ribeiro Giulia a 22 ans. Elle est née près de Florence, d’une mère toscane et d’un père calabrais. Kenji, lui, a 29 ans. Né à Paris d’une mère japonaise et d’un père portugais, il a grandi à Bologne. Il a aussi vécu plusieurs années à la Haye, en Hollande, et à Madrid, en Espagne, avant de déménager il y a trois ans à Montréal. Giulia, elle, vient d’arriver chez nous il y a seulement trois mois, après une année passée à Genève, en Suisse, et une autre à Cannes, en France. Enthousiastes et modestes, ils nous racontent avec naturel comment on vit dans la peau d’un danseur professionnel. Pendant que l’on préparait la séance photo, Giulia avait enfilé un justaucorps noir, échancré dans le dos, un tutu blanc et des collants bordeaux. Elle s’était assise en tailleur pour mettre ses pointes roses et entourer le ruban autour de sa cheville. Soudain, en un « piqué », la voici perchée sur ses doigts de pied. La scène faisait penser à un tableau de Degas, version 2011. « Plié, dégagé, rond de jambe. » Quel art élégant, codifié il y a 350 ans, si plein de délicatesse et de force. Giulia a commencé à danser à 4 ans, sérieusement à 13. « Mon père est incapable de danser, dit-elle en riant. Ma mère par contre a toujours rêvé d’être danseuse, mais elle n’a jamais atteint le niveau professionnel. Je pense avoir hérité d’elle son amour et sa passion pour la danse. C’est d’elle aussi que j’ai hérité certaines qualités physiques, comme la solidité des pieds, » nous révèle-t-elle. Elle nous raconte que tout a commencé dans sa petite ville de Pistoia lorsqu’elle se mit à danser sur la mélodie d’un groupe de musiciens qui jouaient dans la rue. Loris Gai, grand maître de Carla Fracci, passait par là et remarqua la petite fille. Il dit à sa mère : «Cette petite doit faire de la danse, ça se voit, elle aime ça!» L’histoire de Kenji est différente : « Je n’aurais jamais pensé arriver à un niveau professionnel, » révèle-t-il. Même si ses parents ont été danseurs, lui, jusqu’à ses 16 ans se dédiait plutôt au piano. C’est seulement à 17 ans qu’il a une révélation. Kenji et sa personnalité « un peu radicale » se catapultent dans la danse. « Je suis convaincu que tous les métiers, pas seulement les métiers artistiques, sont des vocations. Pour être médecin, journaliste, cuisinier, avocat, coiffeur, peu importe... Parfois on a le déclic, souvent on est doté de certaines prédispositions. Il faut aussi beaucoup de chance, c’est certain, mais il faut surtout en suer : les efforts et le travail paient toujours. » Giulia et Kenji sont d’accord pour dire que « nous sommes faits de muscles et d’os comme tout le monde. Nous avons deux bras et deux jambes. Être danseurs consiste à bien se former, à se faire guider par les bons maîtres, et à absorber comme une éponge, absorber le maximum, tant que le corps suit. » À ce propos, les accidents, les douleurs, les opérations font partie du quotidien des danseurs professionnels. Dancing on Their Tiptoes
On this chilly Fall morning in the heart of the Plateau Mont-Royal, as the sun peaks out of the clear blue sky and the wind graciously moves the yellow, orange, and red leaves, the Grands Ballets Canadiens prepares for its 48th consecutive year of The Nutcracker.

Cover Story my feet. My dad is a lousy dancer,” she reveals with a laugh. Everything began in her little town of Pistoia when she was only a little girl. She was dancing to a melody played by a street-band while the famous master of Carla Fracci, Loris Gai, was strolling by. He stopped to tell her mother: “Your little girl should take dance classes, she obviously loves it!” Kenji’s story is different. “I would have never thought of becoming a professional dancer.” Even though his parents were ballerini, Kenji dedicated his time to playing piano, until he had a revelation at the age of 16. By 17, Kenji’s ‘radical personality’ led him into ballet. “I am convinced that all professions are vocational, not only artistic ones. To be a doctor, a journalist, a cook, a lawyer, a hair-dresser... it’s possible to feel the ‘call,’ but often you are predisposed to do something and you grab your chances. Mostly, I believe that to be good you have to sweat; effort and hard work always pays off.” Giulia and Kenji both agree on saying that “we are made of flesh and blood like anybody else. We have two legs and two arms. To be successful dancers we train a lot, we are well-guided and we always try to absorb everything that surrounds us, like sponges, until our body fails.” In fact, injuries, pain or operations are part of daily life when you are a professional dancer. During a rehearsal, Kenji broke a small bone in his foot. It is a fragile bone that dancers commonly break, like Giulia who was operated two years ago for the same reason. She reassures Kenji that her foot is fine now. Of course, to be unable to move for a month is tough, but Kenji peacefully acknowledges that “there are many worse injuries that can simply destroy your carreer. I am lucky that I will dance again soon.” While speaking to Kenji, Giulia performs an arabesque. With incredible flexibility, she stretches her legs into a 180 degree écarté. They are both very happy to live in Montreal, a city they find to be both dynamic and multicultural. They also consider Montrealers to be very friendly towards Italians. “I think that the presence of the Italian community has contributed to making us feel at ease,” comments Kenji. “I have to say I find Italians here more Italian than Italians in Italy!” The nature of their job often requires them to move from one city to another and it can become uneasy, as they can easily lose touch with family, friends and colleagues, and feel like a stranger everywhere. “Maybe the most unpleasant part of the job is to always reconstruct an affective balance,” concludes Kenji. Giulia brought her cat along, which helps fill the void left by her boyfriend being in Europe. Nonetheless, she is very excited about her first months with the Grands Ballets Canadiens. “It is a repertoire company, which means we dance a bit of everything. To be trained in different styles is essential. We are now finishing Rodin/Claudel, which is neo-classical, to start The Nutcracker, a pure classical piece. Later on in the season, we will dance more contemporary pieces too.” In their opinion, last year’s hit movie Black Swan depicts the ballet world in quite a frightening and largely exaggerated light. “Sure, there are ballerinas who fall into anorexia, artistic directors who try to hook up with you, drugs, and competition between colleagues... it happens, but it’s far from being all there is. We are part of a small percentage of people in the world who live their passion, and love their job.” Kenji, with a radiant face, confesses “those two minutes when you are on stage and the spotlight is on you, and you feel you could vomit those butterflies in your tummy... those two minutes make you forget everything.” Our two dancers dream of one day interpreting Jiri Kylian’s Bella Figura or William Forsythe’s Quartet. In the meantime however, they know that only “life experiences make you meet that special someone within yourself.” So they constantly assimilate technique and experience, and let themselves be inspired, not only by stars and legends, but by daily life. Determined by their hard work and devotion, Giulia and Kenji are definitely on the right path to success.

Anche se i suoi genitori sono stati ballerini, lui fino a 16 anni si dedicava al pianoforte. È solo a 17 anni che scatta qualcosa. Kenji, con la sua “personalità un poco radicale”, si catapulta nella danza. “Sono convinto che tutti i mestieri, non solo quelli artistici, sono delle vocazioni. Per essere medico, giornalista, cuoco, avvocato, parrucchiere... a volte si ha “la chiamata”. Occorre una certa predisposizione, e sicuramente molta fortuna. Ma soprattutto, ci vuole una bella dose di sudore: gli sforzi e il duro lavoro ripagano sempre”. Sia Giulia che Kenji concordano nel dire: “Siamo fatti di ossa e di muscoli come qualsiasi altra persona. Abbiamo due braccia e due gambe. Essere ballerini vuol dire formarsi, farsi guidare da buoni maestri, ed essere come una spugna finchè il corpo riesce a seguire gli ammaestramenti”. In questo campo le lesioni, i dolori, le operazioni fanno parte del mestiere e del quotidiano dei ballerini professionisti. Kenji si è rotto il quinto metatarso durante una prova. È una parte fragile del piede che si è fatta operare anche Giulia due anni fa. Essere obbligato a restare inerte per mesi è difficile, ma Kenji, sereno, sa che “ci sono altre lesioni ben piú gravi che ti stroncano la carriera”. Mentre parlo con Kenji, Giulia fa un’arabesque che si trasforma in un flessibile écarté a 180 gradi, come se nulla fosse. Entrambi sono molto felici di vivere a Montreal, una città che trovano dinamica, ricca di tante culture, e molto accogliente nei confronti degli italiani. “Credo che la forte presenza della comunitá italiana abbia contribuito al farci sentire a nostro agio, commenta Kenji. E devo dire che trovo gli italiani di qui più italiani degli italiani d’Italia!” È importante potersi sentire a casa a Montreal per loro ballerini che, per obblighi di lavoro, traslocano spesso. A forza di spostarsi da un posto all’altro, si finisce col sentirsi un pó stranieri ovunque, e soprattutto si perdono di vista la famiglia, i colleghi e gli amici. “Forse la cosa piú spiacevole del mestiere è doversi sempre ricreare un equilibrio affettivo”, conclude Kenji. Giulia si è portata dietro il gatto, per non pensare al ragazzo lasciato in Europa, ma questi primi mesi ai Grands Ballets Canadiens la entusiasmano. “È una compagnia di repertorio, dove balli di tutto. Formarsi a diversi stili è essenziale. Ora stiamo per finire Rodin/Claudel che è neo-classico e cominciamo Lo Schiaccianoci che è classico. In seguito, nel corso della stagione balleremo anche cose più contemporanee”. Secondo loro, il film a gran successo Black Swan dipinge un mondo del ballet un pò spaventoso, dove la finzione esagera parecchio la realtá: “Le ballerine anoressiche, spiega Giulia, succede; la mamma fuori di testa, succede; il direttore che ci prova, succede; la droga purtroppo, o la competizione tra i colleghi di lavoro, ci sono. Ma facciamo comunque parte della minoranza che vive la sua passione, e facciamo un lavoro che amiamo profondamente”. Kenji, il viso illuminato, ammette: “Quei due minuti di gloria quando vai in scena, con le luci puntate addosso e tante farfalle in pancia che ti viene quasi da vomitare (ridiamo)... Quei due minuti ti fanno dimenticare tutto”. Un giorno, i nostri ballerini sognano di interpretare Bella Figura di Jiri Kylian o il Quartet di William Forsythe. Ma intanto, sanno che sono “le esperienze della vita a farti incontrare quel personaggio dentro di te”. Nel frattempo, continuano ad assimilare tecnica ed esperienze, lasciandosi ispirare non solo dai miti, ma dal quotidiano. Et je dois dire que je trouve les Italiens d’ici plus Italiens que les Italiens d’Italie! » Pouvoir se sentir chez soi à Montréal est important pour eux, car ils ont des obligations de travail qui les amènent à déménager souvent. À force de nomadisme, ils finissent par se sentir étrangers partout et par perdre contact avec les amis, les collègues et la famille dispersés aux quatre coins du monde. « Peut-être que le plus dur dans le métier, c’est de devoir toujours se recréer un équilibre affectif, » conclut Kenji. Giulia a rapporté avec elle son chat, pour ne pas trop penser à son copain laissé en Europe. Mais ces premiers mois aux Grands Ballets Canadiens l’enthousiasment déjà. « C’est une compagnie de répertoire où l’on danse de tout. Se former à différents styles est essentiel. Là, on va terminer Rodin/Claudel, une pièce néo-classique, puis on passe au Casse-Noisette, qui est un pur classique. Puis, au cours de la saison, nous danserons aussi des pièces plus contemporaines. » Selon eux, le film à grand succès Black Swan dépeint un monde du ballet assez épouvantable, où la fiction exagère trop la réalité: « Les danseuses anorexiques, ça existe, explique Giulia; le directeur artistique qui fait des avances, ça arrive; la drogue, malheureusement, ou la compétition entre collègues de travail, il y en a. Mais on fait quand même partie de la fraction de la population qui vit de sa passion, et on exerce un métier qu’on aime profondément ». Kenji, le visage radieux, avoue : « Les deux minutes de gloire quand tu montes sur scène, que tu brilles dans le feu des projecteurs, tu as tellement de papillons dans le ventre que tu pourrais imploser (nous rions)... Ces deux minutes te font tout oublier. » Un jour, nos deux danseurs rêvent d’interpréter Bella Figura de Jiri Kylian ou le Quartet de William Forsythe. Mais ils nous expliquent que ce n’est pas vraiment le danseur qui choisit son personnage, mais plutôt le personnage qui choisit son danseur : « Les expériences de la vie font qu’un jour on rencontre le personnage de ses rêves à l’intérieur de soi. » Alors d’ici là, ils continuent leur labeur, en acquérant toujours plus de technique et en se laissant inspirer non seulement par les danseurs étoiles et les légendes, mais beaucoup par leur quotidien. Angelo Persichilli: "Basta volerlo e lavorare duro" Intervista al nuovo direttore delle comunicazioni del Primo Ministro Stephen Harper Letizia Tesi
“Ci ho messo mezzo secondo a dire di sì. Una proposta del genere non si può rifiutare”. Molisano, immigrato in Canada nel 1975 per amore, sposato con due figli, Angelo Persichilli è il primo italiano nominato direttore delle comunicazioni di un primo ministro canadese. Panoram Italia: È uno degli incarichi più prestigiosi del paese. Se l’aspettava? Angelo Persichilli: Assolutamente no. PI: Ha fatto il giornalista tutta la vita, prima con Il Tempo, Il Corriere Canadese, Omni Tv e poi come editorialista per il Toronto Sun, The Hill Times e il Toronto Star. Come si sente dall’altra parte? AP: Il giornalismo non è una professione: è una droga, una passione. Ovviamente ce l’avrò sempre nel sangue. Ho cambiato lavoro, sì, ma non il centro del mio interesse: la politica. Come giornalista sono sempre stato incuriosito dai meccanismi che presiedono le scelte politiche. Quando stai dall’altra parte ti arrivano i comunicati stampa, la punta dell’iceberg. Dopo trenta anni di cronaca politica volevo capire quello che sta sotto, volevo vedere l’iceberg. Se tornassi a fare il giornalista niente sarebbe più come prima. PI: Cosa rappresenta la nomina di un immigrato a capo delle comunicazioni del primo ministro? AP: È un messaggio di grande apertura, del Canada in generale e di Stephen Harper in particolare, verso tutti gli immigrati, anche se spesso si usa questa definizione in modo improprio. È la dimostrazione che il Canada offre la possibilità di raggiungere qualsiasi traguardo a chiunque: basta volerlo e lavorare duro. PI: La sua storia è diversa da quella della maggior parte degli italiani immigrati in Canada. Lei è arrivato qui per amore... AP: Volevo andare all’estero per imparare l’inglese, poi Lina è venuta in vacanza nel mio paese e mi sono detto: perché non in Canada? Sì, la verità è che sono venuto qui per lei e poi sono rimasto. PI: Contro la volontà dei suoi genitori... AP: Assolutamente, soprattutto di mio padre. Ma nel 1973 l’immigrazione aveva un altro valore. E poi per i genitori anche se diventi presidente degli Stati Uniti il desiderio più grande resta averti accanto. PI: Qual è stata la sua parabola professionale? AP: Venendo in Canada senza conoscere l’inglese, gli unici posti dove si poteva fare il giornalista a Toronto erano Il Corriere Canadese e la Chin Radio. Sono rimasto al Corriere, che all’epoca era la voce della comunità. Mi occupavo della cronaca della comunità e l’ho semplicemente seguita. Per anni è rimasta giustamente chiusa in se stessa per consolidarsi economicamente e poi ha cominciato ad aprirsi per conquistarsi spazi sociali, culturali e politici in ambienti più ampi ed io l’ho seguita. Mi sono integrato come ha saputo fare la comunità. Ovviamente integrazione non vuol dire perdere le proprie radici, che non vanno mai rinnegate.

PI: Che cosa ha portato in Canada della cultura italiana? AP: Una volta feci la stessa domanda all’ex giudice della Corte suprema, Frank Iacobucci. Rispose: vorrei portare in Canada la creatività degli italiani e in Italia il senso civico dei canadesi. Sono completamente d’accordo. PI: Che cosa ha assorbito della cultura canadese? AP: Il rispetto per il prossimo. PI: Il consiglio dato ai suoi figli per incoraggiarli nel mondo del lavoro? AP: Innanzitutto avere le idee chiare. Una volta messo a fuoco l’obiettivo, il Canada darà loro la possibilità di raggiungerlo. L’importante è non girare a vuoto e chiedersi sempre: dove voglio essere fra cinque, dieci anni? Bisogna avere idee e programmi chiari altrimenti si semina sulle pietre. Quando sono in difficoltà e devo prendere una decisione, mi metto dalla parte della persona che dovrà subirla. Se non riesco ad accettare quella decisione vuol dire che non posso imporla nemmeno agli altri. Capire gli altri è importante perché è un modo per capire se stessi. Noi siamo gli altri. PI: Quando si volta indietro, il suo viaggio è come lo immaginava? AP: Il viaggio, per essere interessante, te lo devi inventare giorno per giorno. Ho sempre saputo esattamente quello che volevo, ma dal punto di vista tattico ho lasciato spazio alla creatività. Però, bisogna sapere dove si è diretti perché se non conosci la meta sei un giullare che si esibisce di fronte al miglior offerente. L’individuo, poi, si giudica nel complesso e soprattutto nel quotidiano. I successi e le sconfitte sono importanti, ma più importante è quello che sei nella vita di tutti i giorni. PI: Le manca l’Italia? AP: A parte la famiglia? PI: Intendo se ha nostalgia… AP: No, non ce l’ho. Ma appena torno in Italia è come se non fossi mai partito. PI: Orgoglioso di essere molisano? AP: Certamente. Come sono orgoglioso delle mie radici culturali italiane. Però mi sento canadese. PI: Lei dice che si devono fare programmi. Era questo il suo dieci anni fa? AP: A dir la verità no, ma se chiama il primo ministro...

The Christmas season is here, and one proverb says “it is better to give than to receive.” For one Italo-Canadian doctor, it’s not just a saying. It’s her work, her passion and her way of life.
“
elping people on the other side of the Earth is not outlandish. The world is getting smaller and smaller,” says Dr. Dominique Corti. Corti is the daughter of a Montreal woman who was one of Quebec’s first female surgeons - Dr. Lucille Teasdale. Meanwhile, her father was Dr. Piero Corti, an Italian pediatrician from north of Milan. Perhaps you never heard their names before, but people in Uganda, Africa, know who Drs. Corti and Teasdale are. The three family members are considered heroes there for developing and managing one of the only hospitals in the area. The St. Mary’s Lacor Hospital in Gulu exists today, and treats about 250,000 patients every year, thanks to the Corti family. It started in 1959, when Italian missionaries were in Uganda. “They were looking for a doctor to work at a new hospital,” Corti says. “My father had worked in China for three years, and then went to India, but he could not tolerate the heat.” So Dr. Piero Corti, who was in his mid-30s at the time and specialized in pediatrics, radiology, and neuropsychiatry, decided to give Uganda a try. “Uganda is just beautiful. It’s never too hot and never too cold, and it’s not dangerous if you are white in Uganda,” says Corti. Her father worked with Combonian missionaries in Africa, and Corti says he absolutely loved their vision. “The vision was that Africa was to be saved by

Africans,” Corti explains. But before this could be accomplished, the hospital needed doctors. Corti decided to persuade a Montreal surgeon he had once met to join him in Africa. “My mom was in France at the time, and she had sent my dad a postcard. This was the 1960s and people were horrified at the idea of a female surgeon,” Corti says. “So my father wooed her to come to Uganda for a couple of months. Lucille Teasdale made the trip to northern Uganda, and a couple of months turned into 30 years. The two doctors fell in love, got married, and shared a common dream: “to offer health care to the greatest number of people who needed it most - at the least cost”. The Italian and Canadian doctors made the hospital their home. Dominique Corti was born there, and she grew up running through the halls of the Lacor Hospital in Gulu. “I knew I was different in Uganda, because I would read and play, while other children would spend their days fetching water,” Corti recalls. At first, Corti’s parents were the only two doctors working at the hospital. “My mom performed all the surgeries. Money to run the hospital came from fees, and from my parents going around asking friends to help.” Piero Corti contacted doctors he knew in Italy to join him in Africa, and by the early 1980s, the vision for
the hospital was becoming a reality. “In 1983, the hospital was approved as a training hospital for Ugandan doctors,” Corti says, adding that this is one of the keys to giving the war-torn, poor nation a sustainable health care system. “We are giving people the chance to work in their country. In Uganda, there is one doctor for every 10,000 people. How can we have a health care system if the doctors run away?” So Corti’s parents were committed to training new doctors until their deaths. Her mother died in 1996 of AIDS. Teasdale had contracted the disease 10 years earlier while performing surgery. Corti says she kept working in the operating room until her last days. “No one knew much about AIDS at the time, and she wanted to keep on operating. A doctor in London told her that if she stopped operating, it would be a certain death for her patients. So she must continue,” Corti says. Even when her mother’s condition worsened, Teasdale operated on war casualties for hours a day. Meanwhile, her father died in 2003, at the age of 76, of pancreatic cancer. Today, the Lacor Hospital has a staff of 600 people - all Ugandans. There are about 500 beds - a large leap from when Corti’s parents were the only two doctors there. And Corti’s mission now is to keep her parent’s dream alive. She chairs the two foundations that were started by her parents to help fund the non-profit
Li fe &People hospital. This is why she spends most of her time between Italy, Canada and Uganda. She runs the Teasdale-Corti Foundation, which has an office in Milan and one in Montreal (her parents’ native cities). “We have to fight the idea that Medicare is expensive. In Africa, we can do a lot with a little,” Corti says. “We can treat a patient with $15. Sixty per cent of the hospital’s mortality is children aged 0 to 4. We can solve these problems. Their diseases are easily curable.” Almost half the patients who come to the hospital are children, suffering from what Corti calls “poverty diseases”, such as malaria and diarrhea. The private hospital runs on an annual operating budget of $4.5 million. Small fees help cover the cost. “Pregnant women and children under 6 are treated for free. All other patients pay a lump fee that is never more than 20 per cent of the total cost of their treatment.” The Ugandan government also funds the hospital, and Corti says 20 per cent comes from individual donations. When she is not meeting with donors, Corti makes it a point to visit high schools to speak with students. “I want our children to know that living in Canada is an amazing privilege. They wake up in the morning, they flick a switch, and they have light! They turn on a tap, and they have water - all the water they can possibly want, and it’s safe drinking water,” Corti says. “In Uganda, children have to walk an hour to find water, and then walk back home for another hour with a pail of water on their heads.” Corti says if Canadians realize how lucky they are, they will want to start helping out. “We live far beyond our means, and that needs to change,” Corti says. “I’m not talking about doing desperate things. I am talking about reducing the waste. There is so much food we buy that we know we won’t eat. In homes, we have rooms full of games that the kids don’t even touch.” Corti says the key to making change happen is to do a little bit, every single day. “Our hospital made a difference in Uganda because it stayed there for 30 years. We have to help out, not just once a year during the holidays, but on a regular basis. Put aside a dollar a week - or whatever you can - every week, each month, all year long. Keep on doing it. We are on a collision course, and sooner or later, someone will have to pay the bills. So by helping them, you are also helping yourself and your children.”

“Venni qui per lui”

Lina Aucello aveva solo 17 anni quando arrivò in Canada il 12 aprile 1953, per sposarsi undici giorni dopo. Nata a Palo del Colle, in provincia di Bari, lasciò il paese, come altre sue coetanee, per sfuggire alla povertà e per inseguire un sogno d’amore, iniziato quasi per caso.
omenico, dopo un anno di servizio militare, aveva deciso di fare il vigile urbano. Lina lavorava con le sue tre sorelle alla finitura delle divise dei soldati. Un giorno, mentre cuciva, Domenico, con la sua bella uniforme bianca, si accostò alla porta e con voce dura le chiese di chi fossero le galline sulla strada. A quel tempo, spiega Lina, era concesso avere le galline in casa, ma chiunque le lasciasse fuori, veniva sanzionato. Bastò una piccola bugia per evitare la multa. Era la stagione dei fichi (o fioroni, primizie pugliesi di fine agosto) e sua madre, appena tornata dal mercato, si spaventò dell’accaduto. Lina quasi dimenticò l’episodio finché Domenico non comparve di nuovo: “si metteva là alla rezza - la rete installata sulla porta - fisso a guardare”.

Dopo diversi incontri, Lina divenne amica di una delle sorelle di Domenico e iniziò a frequentare la loro famiglia. “Me ne andavo a volte a casa loro, ma giusto per fare quattro chiacchere con la sorella”, e lui le diceva “tu un giorno sarai la mia sposa”. Con uno stipendio di sole 8 lire alla settimana e con una prospettiva di lavoro in Canada, dove il governo incentivava l’immigrazione per esigenze di manodopera, Domenico, decise di partire per Montreal. Lina continuò a ricevere sue notizie e molte lettere d’amore, finché un giorno la sorella arrivò con una richiesta: “Signò, vuole far sposare Lina a mio fratello?” La madre di Lina, chiamata a rispondere secondo le usanze, temporeggiò, ma quando dopo pochi giorni chiese l’opinione di sua figlia, la risposta non tardò ad arrivare. “Non volevo stare più al villaggio, la miseria era assai e c’erano troppi troubles”. Una macchina la venne a prendere insieme ad altre quattro ragazze che, come lei, fuggivano oltreoceano. Tra le lacrime della madre e delle sorelle, che la guardavano affacciate al balcone, il padre di Lina si avvicinò e le disse “Mo vattin! Sennó qui non la finiamo più. E Dio ti benedica”. Arrivata a Napoli, una volta a bordo della nave, Lina avrebbe voluto tornare indietro. Il viaggio e la vastità dell’oceano ebbero un impatto scioccante su Lina che non aveva mai lasciato il paese. La musica e le danze che intrattenevano i passeggeri, non riuscivano a rallegrarla: “Ero sempre sul letto a piangere e a dormire. Divenni uno stecchino, non mangiavo dalla tristezza”. Un messicano addetto alle pulizie soleva riperterle: “non credo che arrivi a sposarti, tu muori sopra la nave a furia di piangere”. Ma la nave, ricorda Lina, fu anche il luogo dove vide il suo primo film, all’epoca forma di intrattenimento poco consona a una ragazza del suo paese. Trascorsero dodici lunghi giorni in mare e finalmente l’approdo a Halifax segnò un nuovo capitolo per Lina. Salutate le compagne di viaggio, prese il treno per Montreal e con grande stupore, alla stazione c’era proprio Domenico ad aspettarla: “vidi un uomo correndo, era lui! Mi abbracciò, e quello fu proprio un bacio d’amore!” Undici giorni dopo, dalle scale della casa su Rue Waverly, dove vive tuttora, Lina scendeva in strada con l’abito bianco, ma dovette adattarsi in fretta alla nuova situazione, dedicando la sua vita affinché i suoi figli potessero andare a scuola. Vedova da ormai due anni, Lina confessa di sentirsi sola, “come un albero in mezzo alla strada”. A volte si siede fuori casa, per vedere la gente passare o chiama il suo nipotino per parlargli in barese. Ogni anno, però, il giorno di Sant’Antonio, Lina ordina un sacco di pane dal panificio italiano dietro casa e lo regala ai vicini. “Iniziai la tradizione a casa di mamma nel 1953 e sempre la devo fare, sino a quando Dio mi chiama”, perché da allora Lina non ha più rivisto la sua famiglia. Il costo del viaggio e la paura di perdere il lavoro, l’hanno mantenuta lontano dai suoi cari, ormai scomparsi, e se dovesse trovarsi da sola nella piazza del paese, ammette, non saprebbe come tornare a casa. Felice dell’amore di suo marito e di quello che insieme hanno costruito per l’avvenire dei loro figli attraverso gli anni, Lina non rimpiange di aver lasciato la sua terra perché “i fiori del giardino - dice - sono tutti appassiti come me, però Dio mi da la rassegnazione, e io sono contenta”...

Remembering Saturday Morning

uring those classes, the teacher would encourage us to speak Italian, which proved challenging at times, since most of us were used to speaking English or French in school. We had to learn Italian grammar, geography and history. I had enough studying all of those subjects in regular school. I had no interest in learning about Dante Alighieri and his "Divina Commedia" or knowing that Italy became a unified country in 1861, and this Befana - who was she and why did we have to learn poems about her? All I wanted was to be home; I wanted to be outside playing elastics with my friends, doing what normal kids do during the weekend. The mornings were long, filled with dictations, quizzes and reading exercises. Oh, how I looked forward to recess. At lunch, the bell would ring and I was finally free to enjoy the rest of my day. Looking back, I feel for those Italian teachers who tried, with only a few hours at their disposal, to share a parcel of knowledge with kids, who, like me, wished they were home sleeping. But things changed one Saturday morning. I remember our teacher asking each one of us what part of Italy our parents came from. When she asked me, I remember answering: “Calabria o Campobasso.” Both regions sounded the same to me - I figured it was one or the other. It’s not that my parents hadn’t told me that they both came from Calabria. I had heard countless stories about their childhood spent in their village of Santa Caterina, harvesting the fields, living through the war, the sacrifices, the traditions... It’s that sadly, as a child, I never bothered retaining the information. I honestly didn’t have much interest in it. That episode was a catalyst for me. For the first time, I felt shame. How could I not be certain about where my family was from? When my dad picked me up that day, I told him what had happened. I could see the disappointment in his face. Maybe that’s what I needed to see, because after that day, I started developing a genuine desire to learn more about my roots. Slowly but surely, my perspective about Italian school changed. I was a teenager by then and I had made friends during those classes - I looked forward to seeing them on Saturday. When I was 17, my parents sent me to Italy to visit my family. I felt like I belonged. It was nice to be able to communicate with my Italian speaking family without any help. I started appreciating Italian culture and wanting to know more about where my parents came from. I was applying what I had learnt on Saturday morning in everyday life - all that studying was paying off. I felt that my identity was developing and Italian culture was a great part of it. There were other perks as well. Upon graduating from Italian school, a year before graduating from high school, the Canadian government recognised my Italian PICAI diploma and so, I was given extra credits which carried over to my high school report card. My college submission file looked even better with those extra credits. Sadly, a few years later, my mother passed away. More than ever I needed to feel close to my roots, I had to grow up and define who I was as a person. I was able to draw strength from my heritage in the moment I needed it most. And now, since joining the work force, speaking Italian has been an invaluable asset. From helping translate documents, to contacting Italian speaking individuals, I have become the go-to person. Closer to home, being able to speak Italian with my father and my family is a testimony of the respect I have for them. It might not be easy - kids will never enjoy sacrificing their Saturday mornings - but Italian classes are well worth it. We have an invaluable resource offered to us and it’s important that we preserve it.

On paper, Saturday morning should be the best part of someone’s week. As a child, you look forward to sleeping in and playing all day. But while I was growing up, my parents had other plans for me, namely, Italian school. My mom signed me up when I was in grade school. That first Saturday morning, I remember trying to convince her not to send me. Of course, it didn’t work. Every week I would come up with different excuses, from not feeling well, to having too much homework, to sensing an imminent snowstorm approaching... I should have known better than to challenge my Italian mother. It never worked. And so, off I went to Italian school, e-ve-ry Saturday, until high school.

picca soprattutto l’allestimento di presepi: meno famoso di quello di Napoli, il presepe piemontese ha però anch’esso il suo personaggio tipico, Gelindo, il pastore che per primo si reca a venerare Gesù. Raffigurato come un vecchio con un agnello in spalla, con cappello, giacca e calzoni corti, la piva (la zampogna) e la cavagna (il cesto) al braccio, Gelindo è, prima che una statuina da presepe, il protagonista di un antico testo teatrale (La favola di Gelindo, “divota commedia”) che, un tempo recitato negli oratori e nelle stalle, oggi è presentato in vari teatri piemontesi (tra gli interpreti, ad Alessandria, ci fu perfino Umberto Eco). Il personaggio ha generato alcuni modi di dire dialettali: “Gelindo” (o Gilindo) si dice di un bonaccione, sempliciotto ma di buon senso; “Gelindo ritorna” significa “Di nuovo!”, perché nei suoi dialoghi con la moglie Alinda dimentica sempre qualcosa e perciò entra ed esce continuamente di scena;

in Piemonte “Viene Gelindo” sta per “arriva il Natale”; “pastorale di Gelindo” è la musica della Messa natalizia; e “maffè”, dal nome del servitore di Gelindo, Maffeo, indica una persona rozza e ignorante. Accanto a Gelindo nel presepe piemontese compaiono altre figure che portano al Bambin Gesù i cibi tipici della regione. Le loro offerte riassumono la gastronomia natalizia del Piemonte: ecco la Tota (signorina) Mariuccia con gli agnolotti, pasta ripiena dei giorni di festa (prelibati gli agnolotti del plin, termine che indica il pizzicotto con il quale si richiude con le dita la pasta in un minuscolo fagottino); il Monsù (signor) Aldo con i grissini di Torino; Ginota di Avigliana con i pesci del lago; Vanna di Condove con le tipiche patate di montagna; Vigio da Ceva con un cestino di funghi; Bastian da Bra con la famosa salsiccia locale; Michele con il formaggio robiola; la Madama (signora)
Onorina con i torcetti, biscottini di Lanzo; Madama Tilde con i gianduiotti, i cioccolatini torinesi... A questo menu natalizio potremmo aggiungere i peperoni con la bagna cauda (sughetto di acciughe), il tortino di cardo, il bollito di carni varie con innumerevoli salse, le acciughe al verde, il brasato al barolo (arrosto di manzo cotto nel vino), l’insalata di carne cruda all’albese (dalla località di Alba), e poi dolci come lo zabajone o il torrone. Le figurine del presepe mescolano dunque sacro e profano non diversamente da un’altra consuetudine antica, che si va riscoprendo nel Piemonte di oggi: quella della vjà, la veglia della notte di Natale, durante la quale ci si riuniva nelle stalle e, tra racconti e canti tradizionali, si mangiavano le castagne arrostite (caldarroste), innaffiate da un buon vino piemontese, per augurarsi a vicenda, in modo semplice e schietto: “Buon Natale!”.

una tradizione antica famosa in tutto il mondo

Ancora adesso ricordo quella fredda sera di dicembre quando avevo 6 anni e passeggiavo con la mia famiglia nel cuore di Napoli in Via San Gregorio Armeno, una piccola stradina piena di botteghe, negozi e bancarelle. Pastori, presepi, decorazioni natalizie, statuine in legno, in gesso e in terracotta. Presepi in miniatura o giganti, spettacoli con attori da strada vestiti d’epoca, accompagnati da un sottofondo musicale prodotto dal mandolino del vecchio signore affacciato alla sua finestra. Ed io ero così felice insieme ai miei fratelli nel cercare quel personaggio diverso che avesse reso il nostro presepe ancora più speciale. “Quest’anno faremo il più bel presepe di tutti gli anni”, diceva ripetutamente mio padre. a cos’è il Presepe? Il presepe, detto anche mangiatoia o culla, è la scena della Natività Cristiana, e si pensa sia stata creata da San Francesco d'Assisi nel XIII secolo a Greccio, un paesino a nord di Roma. In genere, raffigura Gesù, Maria e Giuseppe in una stalla, accompagnati da un bue e un asinello. A volte la scena comprende personaggi e alcune caratteristiche della storia della natività biblica, dai vangeli del Nuovo Testamento di Luca e Matteo, tra cui i Tre Re Magi, i pastori, gli angeli e la stella di Betlemme. San Francesco, che ha riproposto la scena con personaggi dal vivo, utilizzò la natività per trasmettere l'idea della nascita del Bambin Gesù. E così anche le chiese cattoliche presto cominciarono a creare le loro scene proprio a Natale. La tradizione si diffuse rapidamente in tutta Italia ed Europa. Nel XVIII secolo a Napoli, al culmine del periodo barocco, la Natività si sviluppò come una vera e propria arte. Finanziati dalla monarchia, gli artisti locali trasformavano il presepe in un’elaborata scena drammatica, piena di personaggi tra cui re, angeli, pastori e musicisti, in diversi tipi di materiali, ed i vestiti erano dipinti a mano con i migliori tessuti. Noti scultori venivano spesso commissionati per creare le scene. Il presepe è così considerato non solo un modo più religioso di celebrare la nascita di Gesù Bambino, ma è diventato con il tempo anche una tradizione e una rappresentazione artistica del Natale.

A Roma, ad esempio, passeggiando per il centro si possono visitare le chiese e ammirare i loro presepi. Il più antico presepe risale al 1280 ed è considerato uno dei più grandi tesori della Basilica romana di Santa Maria Maggiore. Ma la scena della Natività più famosa di Roma, si trova nella Chiesa di Santa Maria d'Aracoeli, sul Campidoglio. La statua a grandezza naturale del Santo Bambino, è stata ricavata in un piccolo uliveto poco fuori la città di Gerusalemme nel quale Gesù Cristo, secondo i Vangeli, si ritirò dopo l’ultima cena prima di essere tradito ed arrestato. Tuttora si considera che tale statua sia dotata di guarigione miracolosa. Infatti, il Santo Bambino è stato realmente assunto dalla chiesa per portare conforto ai malati e ai moribondi. Ora viene conservata in una teca di vetro nella sacrestia, ornata di gioielli e oggetti preziosi donati dai fedeli. Il giorno di Natale, il Santo Bambino è calato nel Presepe circondato da decine di pastori come schiere di angeli che vegliano su di lui sotto un magnifico cielo stellato. Ci sono poi diverse chiese con presepi permanenti. Il più imponente è nella Basilica dei Santi Medici Cosma e Damiano in Alberobello (BA). L’ampio presepe napoletano del 1700 è esposto in uno degli ambienti del chiostro dove la scena della Natività comprende centinaia di figure, angeli e personaggi di ogni ceto che rappresentano simultaneamente religiosità, sentimento e solidarietà. Questo è lo scopo principale di ogni Presepe: diffondere principalmente il messaggio cristiano e riprodurre la nascita di Gesù Bambino attraverso l’utilizzo di diversi personaggi . Dicembre è arrivato e con la mia famiglia aspettiamo con ansia l’apertura di quella vecchia scatola, che con tanta cura abbiamo portato dall’Italia, per fare, anche quest’anno, il “Presepe piu bello di Via San Gregorio Armeno, Napoli tutti gli anni”.

grew up with the tradition of La Befana,” says the 29-year-old mother. “I didn’t really ask myself if I was ever going to continue this with my son. I knew I had to. It’s just part of our tradition.” In Italian folklore, legend has it that the Three Wise Men were on their way to visit baby Jesus. They stopped at the old lady’s house - who was known to be the best housekeeper in the village, spending her days sweeping and cleaning. She provided shelter for the night. The next day, the three kings invited Befana to join them, but she said she had too much housework to do. The three magi left, on their way to see the Saviour. La Befana later changed her mind, regretting not going to visit baby Jesus. She sets out to find him, but never does. So every year, the housekeeper, with her broom, visits every home where there lives a child, and bears gifts, hoping to find baby Jesus. Di Matteo remembers growing up in her parents’ house with socks hanging on her bedpost during the holidays. “The stockings would come out at the same time as the Christmas decorations, but my brothers and I knew not to look for any gifts inside on December 25th. We knew the Befana came on January 6th.” Di Matteo says her parents have vivid memories of getting gifts once a year in January while they were growing up in Italy. For Di Matteo’s father Alessandro, the feast of the epiphany was all about surprises.

It’s time to deck the halls! Dust off the tinsel, get out the wreaths, and mail in your letters to Santa. The magic of Christmas is just around the corner. But what happens after you’ve eaten the last piece of baccalà, your most stretchy elastic-waistband pants are snug, and the man in the red and white suit has come and gone? How many Italo-Canadians still anxiously await another gift-bearing visitor in January? She’s known as La Befana. She visits children in Italy on the eve of the epiphany. And she also stops by Sabrina Di Matteo’s house in Laval every year.
“He grew up with the tradition of Galette des Rois. It’s a puff pastry that’s made just for the Epiphany,” Di Matteo explains. It’s a French tradition, but Alessandro Di Matteo grew up with this almond-paste cake in Vicoli, Pescara as well. A bean is hidden inside the cake, and the person who finds the bean in his or her slice of cake gets to be King or Queen for the day. But Di Matteo says that for her mother, Carmela Di Stefano, January 6th was an unnerving experience. “My mother remembers being told a story about an old lady who leaves presents in socks if you’re good and coal if you’re bad,” Di Matteo says. “It was fear-based. An old witch was going to come over. My mom entertained the idea that she was being watched and judged.” But on the morning of the Epiphany, Di Stefano’s socks in her Campobasso home would be filled with oranges and tangerines. “At that time, it truly was a treat to get oranges and tangerines,” Di Matteo says. “They came from Sicily - a tropical fruit in the middle of the winter. It was a real gift.” And it’s a tradition Di Matteo’s parents passed on to her. “I remember the first time I opened my sock hanging on my bedpost, and I pulled out oranges. I was slightly disappointed,” she says laughing. “I would get little things like tangerines, oranges, and coins. But it was fun and I looked forward to it.” The tradition also reminded her that she was growing up in an Italian home. “There was definitely a cultural element to it because my French-Canadian friends in school didn’t have La Befana coming around to their house.” This is why Di Matteo wanted to continue this tradition with her son Gabriele, who is now 11. “With La Befana, I always had the idea that I had to preserve some part of my folklore, and La Befana is much more folkloric to me than Santa ever was,” Di Matteo says. “It’s part of our tradition, and I decided I wanted to add something, so I would leave personal letters for Gabriele, written by La Befana,” Di Matteo says. “The whole letter was in Italian because I wanted him to read in Italian, and I wanted to have dialogue with him in Italian.” Di Matteo would leave traditional poems too: La Befana vien di notte Con le scarpe tutte rotte Col vestito alla romana Viva, Viva La Befana! Gabriele’s letters from La Befana would be full of positive reinforcement. “The letters would say to keep doing well in school and to keep practicing Italian with his nonni,” Di Matteo says. Gabriele still appreciates the gesture and the tradition. “I would always be surprised,” he says. For Di Matteo, who has a bachelor’s degree in theology, La Befana was also a way to shift the focus back to the religious meaning of the Christmas holiday. “Looking back, I definitely put much more emphasis on the Befana than I did on Santa,” Di Matteo says. “Santa, coming from St. Nicholas, has a more religious connection than La Befana does, but it’s not insisted upon at all. It’s all become very commercial. I wanted December 25th to be about the faith aspect - the birth of Jesus. And I’m trying to connect more with the origins of La Befana and connect it to the story of the magi.” Di Matteo says it’s a tradition she’ll continue to uphold. “The story is very meaningful. It’s the idea of a search... going off on a quest, looking for a King. Searching for the great, and finding the small... seeing every child as a gift. It’s a neat gesture, and I will continue to do it.”

Chocolate and Hazelnuts Mini Panettoni If you’ve never attempted to make Panettone, I suggest you team up with a friend as it’s a daylong process. This was my first attempt and it turned out better than I could have hoped considering the fact that I modified three recipes to create something to call my own. For guidance and inspiration, I turned to many sources: First I opened my Giorgio Locatelli cookbook to find that, although he dedicates two full pages to romanticize the art of Panettone making, he fails to offer a recipe. This made me hesitate. If a Michelin Star Chef leaves the Panettone making to the pros, why should I even attempt it? After looking through many recipes online and watching a few Panettone making videos, my fear was gone and I was excited to get started. I decided not to try to recreate the classic Panettone but opted to make one with my favourite ingredients: chocolate and hazelnuts.
Panettone 1/3 cup warm water 2 envelopes of active dry yeast (1 tablespoon in each envelope) 4 cups all purpose flour, plus more for dusting 1/2 cup warm milk 2/3 cup granulated sugar 4 large whole eggs 2 large egg yolks 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter, plus more for brushing over Pannetone 1 cup roasted hazelnuts, chopped in halves 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Freshly grated zest of 2 oranges 12 mini paper panettoni molds
Sponge: With a fork, dissolve 1 envelope of yeast in 1/3 cup warm water in a bowl. Then let stand until foamy, 5 to 10 minutes. Add 1/2 cup flour and stir to make very loose dough. Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let stand in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 30 minutes.
Milk Mixture: In another bowl, pour warm milk and sprinkle with remaining envelope of yeast. Stir with a fork until yeast has dissolved, then let stand 5 to 10 minutes.
Egg Mixture: Meanwhile, whisk together sugar, whole eggs, 2 egg yolks, salt, and vanilla. Whisk in milk mixture.
Directions: In a large bowl, beat butter and remaining 3 1/2 cups flour with a mixer on medium speed until mixture is crumbly. Reduce speed to low, and gradually add egg mixture. Raise speed to medium, and beat until smooth. Add SPONGE, and beat on medium-high speed until dough is elastic and long strands form when it's stretched, about 5 minutes (it will still be very sticky). Stir in orange zest, hazelnuts and chocolate chips. Transfer to a buttered bowl, and cover with buttered plastic wrap. Let dough stand in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 2 hours. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F, with rack in lower third. Turn dough out onto a floured surface, and divide into 12 portions. Knead a few times and shape into balls. Drop each ball into a paper Panettone mold, transfer to a rimmed baking sheet, and loosely cover with buttered plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm place until dough reaches edge of mold, 30 to 45 minutes. Melt 2 Tbsp butter. Cut an X in the top of each ball with a sharp knife and brush tops with butter. Bake 10 minutes at 400 degrees F. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F and bake until tops are golden brown and rise above rims of molds, about 15 minutes. Transfer Panettoni to a cooling rack. Enjoy at room temperature. Be sure that the breads have cooled completely before wrapping them and they can be stored for a couple of days. To give the Panettone as a gift, tie a red ribbon around it and make a bow. I gave mine away in Christmas paper bags. They can also be presented in a box or wrapped with clear cellophane.

Christmas Bark This no-bake sweet treat is fun and easy to make. Get the kids involved and let them smash the candy canes or the nuts. Here I propose a bark divided in three sections. Be as creative as you wish with the toppings: nuts, dried fruit, candy, marshmallows...the possibilities are endless.
Christmas Bark Three Ways 1 lb (454 g) white chocolate 1 lb (454 g) dark chocolate (semi-sweet) 1 cup pistachio, chopped 1 cup dried cranberry 1 cup broken peppermints or candy cane 1 cup Hershey kisses candy cane flavour.
Directions: Line a 12- x 9- inch (30 x 23 cm) baking sheet with wax paper and set aside. In a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, melt the dark chocolate, stirring occasionally until smooth. With an offset spatula, spread the melted dark chocolate in an even layer on a wax paper-lined baking sheet. Place the pan in the refrigerator to harden, about 30- 45 minutes. In the meantime prep the toppings. Break your candy canes or peppermints by placing them in a resealable plastic bag and hitting them with a rolling pin or a meat tenderizer on the flat side. Shell and chop the pistachios. Unwrap the Hershey kisses. Melt the white chocolate over a double boiler until smooth. Spread on top of the dark chocolate layer. Working quickly before the white chocolate sets, sprinkle the crushed candy canes on 1/3 of the pan, the pistachio and cranberry on the next 1/3 of the pan and finally arrange the Hershey kisses on the last part. Gently press all the toppings into the chocolate. Refrigerate until complete hard and set, at least 2 hours. Break into pieces using your hands. Place pieces of bark in a food safe tissue paper-lined box and wrap with Christmas themed paper.

Panna cotta con marmellata di melograno This eye-catching dessert is very easy to make and can be made a day or two before your event.
Pomegranate Jelly Ingredients 3 teaspoons unflavoured powdered gelatin 1/3 cup (80 ml) cold water 2 cups Pomegranate Juice 1/2 cup granulated white sugar, or to taste
Ingredients (Makes 12 to 15 shot glass servings) 1 1/2 cups milk + 1/4 cup 2 cups heavy cream 3/4 cups sugar 4 teaspoons unflavoured gelatin 1/2 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped
Directions Sprinkle the gelatin over 1/3 cup of cold water. Let this mixture sit for about five to ten minutes.

Meanwhile, in a saucepan, heat the pomegranate juice and sugar on medium-high heat, stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar. Do not let boil. Stir the softened gelatin into the hot juice and place this mixture over a low heat and stir constantly until the gelatin has completely dissolved.
Place the gelatin in bowl and add 1/4 cup milk, stir to combine and set aside for 5 minutes. Pour milk mixture into a saucepan and stir over medium heat just until the gelatin dissolves about 5 minutes. Do not let the liquid reach a boil. Add 1/2 cup milk, cream, sugar, vanilla bean and seeds and cook on medium heat for 7 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes. Pass the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a measuring cup with a pour spout. To achieve the tilted look, place the shot glasses at an angle in an egg carton. Carefully pour the panna cotta into tall shot glasses, filling 3/4 of the glass. Chill in refrigerator for 4 hours.
Remove from heat and let cool for about 10 minutes. Remove the panna cotta from egg carton and place on non-slip flat surface. Pour equal amounts of the pomegranate jelly over the panna cotta and refrigerate about 2 - 4 hours or until set. Top with pomegranate seeds when ready to serve.

Attach these directions to the jar: Empty the content of the jar in a large bowl. In a separate bowl combine 1 cup softened unsalted butter, 2 eggs and 2 Tbsp vanilla extract. Beat until creamy. Fold in dry mixture until well combined. Drop by tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheet and bake in a preheated 375 degree F oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 4 dozens. Decorate with a ribbon and bow and tie a measuring spoon or cookie cutter to the jar.

Ingredients (Servings about 12 crostini) 1 baguette, sliced 1/2 inch at an angle 1 package frozen peas, thawed (454 grams) 1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 cup pine-nuts, toasted 1/2 cup Parmigiano, grated 1 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus extra for seasoning 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 4 slices speck
Directions Heat a large skillet to medium heat, add pine nuts. Stir the nuts continuously. As the nuts start turning brown, remove them from heat and transfer immediately into a dish. Let cool. Preheat oven at 350 degree F. Place slices of speck on an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet. Bake for about 10 minutes, remove from oven. Let cool and then brake into pieces. In the food processor, pulse together the peas, garlic, toasted pine nuts, Parmigiano, salt and pepper. While you are pulsing, slowly pour the olive oil until well combined, about 1 minute. Top each crostini with 1 Tbsp of pea pesto and garnish with pieces of speck.

Ingredients (Servings about 12 crostini) 1 baguette, sliced at an angle in 1/2 inch 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil + more for drizzling 2 cloves garlic, minced 8 cups thinly sliced mixed mushrooms 1-1/2 lb (750 g) (I used king and brown button mushrooms, but feel free to use whatever is available: oyster, shiitake, chanterelles) 1 tsp fresh thyme, salt, freshly ground black pepper 1 cup crumbled soft goat cheese
Directions In large skillet, heat oil over medium- high heat. Add sliced mushrooms; sauté until the mushrooms are golden and the liquid has evaporated, about 7 minutes. Add minced garlic; sauté 1 minute. Add fresh thyme, salt and pepper. Remove from heat. Top each crostini with 1 Tbsp mushroom mixture and crumble some goat cheese over the mushrooms, drizzle with olive oil just before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature

Fennel, Mandarine and Pomegranate Salad INSALATA DI FINOCCHIO, MANDARINO E MELOGRANO Lighten the holiday meal with this fresh, festive and colourful salad.
Ingredients (Makes 8 to 12 canapé serving) 1 large fennel bulb, trimmed and thinly sliced (reserve some fennel frons) 3 mandarine oranges, supremes. 1 seeded pomegranate (the trick here is to de-seed it in a bowl of water - the seeds will sink to the bottom and your hands won’t get stained) 1/4 cup olive oil 3 Tbsp juice from mandarins Salt and pepper
Directions Start by making the mandarine supremes. Using a sharp paring knife, cut off the ends, then remove skin in strips working from top to bottom. Cut along the side of the membrane to remove the sections of the citrus fruit. Set the supremes aside. Squeeze what is left of the mandarine over a strainer and reserve juice. Whisk 3 Tbsp of mandarine juice with olive oil and salt. Assemble your salads by layering fennel slices, topping with mandarin supremes and pomegranate seeds. Drizzle the vinaigrette and top with fennel frons.
Mussel Saffron Risotto
RISOTTO CON COZZE E ZAFFERANO Flavoured with saffron and white wine, this mussel risotto is perfect for a special occasion.
Ingredients Makes 10-12 canapé servings 2 1/2 cups water 1 cup fish broth 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 1/2 pounds mussels, scrubbed. Use a brush to scrub mussels under running water. Discard mussels with broken shells or any whose shells remain open after you tap them lightly. Scrape away their beards (black fibrous string) with a knife . 1/4 tsp saffron threads 1 1/2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 Tbsp butter 1 onion, onion, minced 1 clove garlic, minced 1 cups arborio rice 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Salt to taste Freshly ground pepper to taste
Directions Bring water and wine to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Add mussels and steam until the shells open, 2 to 3 minutes. Pick out the mussels, discard any that have not opened and reserve the broth. Shell the mussels, set aside. Strain the broth through a filter-lined sieve into a small saucepan. Add fish broth (or water), salt, saffron and keep on back burner at a simmer. Heat oil and butter in a large saucepan or deep skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté until golden, 3 to 4 minutes. Add rice and stir well to coat. Add your first ladle of hot stock and a nice pinch of salt. Turn down the heat to a simmer and keep stirring until the liquid is absorbed by the rice. Keep adding 1/2 cup of stock at a time, allowing the liquid to be absorbed between each addition, stirring constantly. After about 18 minutes, test the rice. It should be soft but with a slight bite. Carefully stir in the shelled mussels (reserve 10 to 12 to use to top your dishes when plating) and parsley and season with more salt (if needed) and pepper. Carefully plate risotto in individual dishes and top with mussel. Serve warm

lthough many would assume that Champagne was the original sparkling wine, the Romans had been making sparkling wine thousands of years before its French counterpart was ever introduced. There are many types of spumante, ranging from the driest (Brut) to the sweetest (Demi-Sec), depending on the quantity of residual sugar left by fermentation. Spumante is produced following two methods: the first is metodo classico or metodo tradizionale (called methode Champenoise in French) where fermentation takes place in the bottle. This method is ideal for obtaining Brut and Extra-Dry spumante like the ones from the Franciacorta area. The second is metodo charmat or tank method, where fermentation occurs in a sealed tank. This more flexible method - hence more popular - also allows for the production of Sec, Demi-Sec and aromatic spumante like Moscato d’Asti, as well as Prosecco di Conegliano -Valdobbiadene. As you ring in the New Year, enjoy one of these fine recommendations, and don’t forget: rubbing a few drops of spumante behind your ears - as you would with perfume - is said to bring good luck in the coming year!

Delicious Italian Plums There are thousands of varieties of plums from all around the world, all differing in size, shape, and flavor. Each variety falls into a different category : yellow, green, black, and red. Italy grows various types of plums, and its most known grown variety is called Angelino, and falls into the black plum category. Angelino plums have a reddish-black exterior skin, and they are round to heart-shaped. The inside flesh is amber-yellow colored, very juicy and the flavor is mildly tangy and sweet. Italian Angelino plums are available to us Canadians from September to January.
In Italy, the Angelino plums grow in Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Campania, and Basilicata, where plums are referred to by two names : “prugna” and “susina”. Both words are synonyms. Health wise, Italian plums are an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamins A and C, and potassium. They also have very little calories and contain more antioxidants than any other fruit. In other words, Italian plums make for a healthy snack or ingredient!

Panna cotta con susine alla vaniglia Ingredients (serves 6) Panna Cotta mixture: 3 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon unflavored powdered gelatin 3 cups heavy cream 1 cup whole milk 1/2 vanilla bean, split lengthwise 1/3 cup honey 1 tbs sugar Vanilla poached plums : 1 lb plums, washed (about 6-7 plums) ¾ cup sugar 1 cup water 1 cinnamon stick 1 vanilla bean, split
Directions: In a small bowl, combine the water and gelatin and let soak about 10 minutes (do not stir). Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, heat the cream, milk, vanilla bean, honey and sugar to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve the honey and sugar. As soon as it simmers, turn off the heat and add the gelatin mixture, stirring to dissolve the gelatin. If the gelatin doesn't completely dissolve in 3 minutes, return the mixture to the heat and warm gently until dissolved. Pour the mixture into 6 to 8 dessert cups. Chill uncovered, for 24 hours. Vanilla poached plums : Slice the plums and remove the stones. Add the sugar into a saucepan with water, cinnamon and vanilla. Gently heat until the sugar dissolves. Add the fruit into the saucepan. Bring the mixture to the boil, then let it simmer for 5-10 minutes, or until the plums are soft. Leave to cool slightly. Suggested Serving: Once the panna cotta is ready, serve chilled and top with the poached plum mix directly in the dessert cups.

When you open the door to Pâtisserie St. Martin you will immediately be greeted by the smell of fresh bread floating all around you. Now with two locations, Pâtisserie St. Martin has been warming customers' appetites for more than twenty years. While it offers all the bread, pizza, cakes, and pastries you can imagine, it also carries all the comfort food Italians and nonItalians love with an impressive catering service as well. wners of this bakery have been in the pastry business almost their whole lives. Joey Musumeci's father was one of the first bakers in Montreal, while partners Ross Muro and David De Cotiis began working in pastry shops at a very young age. The owners here don't just stand on the sidelines, they are involved in every aspect of running the business. From baking bread, to making deliveries, and serving customers, the owners share a deep passion for the trade that doesn't come by very often nowadays. “We love what we do,” says Ross Muro, “and to see the customer leave happy and come back again and again is what motivates us.” The owners believe it's that one-on-one service they offer their clients that keeps them coming back. On the day of our interview, Muro converses with almost everyone that walks in, and refers to many of his clients as his friends. “There is that comfort you feel when you know you can come here and trust the person that is serving you.” Something you can also trust is the high quality of foods at Pâtisserie St. Martin. Just one visit to this place and your mouth will be watering. Everything is made from scratch and in-house using the best ingredients. For example, their amarettis are made with real almonds, their cannoli shells are made by hand, and their traditional white Italian pizza is made with olive oil. The selection of foods is also impressive. A variety of breads and pizzas that are freshly baked every day, an assortment of tempting pastries you won’t be able to make up your mind, an array of imported Italian, cheeses, olive oils, cold cuts and much more. Aside from what you see on the shelves, St. Martin also offer a choice of delicious hot and cold meals. Stop by any day of the week for lunch or take it to go. “We have a daily special each day,” explains Muro. “Today for example we are serving spaghetti with seafood and we have a soup of the day to go with that.” This is certainly not your ordinary bakery. The atmosphere is also very inviting. The decor and the friendly employees make you feel like you're in a café or a small

restaurant rather than an actual bakery. “It's a fun place to be,” Muro says. “Customers come in and we sit down and have a coffee together. It's that kind of comfortable environment we want to create.” You can also take St. Martin home with you. Ready to serve meals, like lasagna and cannelloni, made with homemade tomato sauce, allow you to save time and enjoy a delicious meal in minutes. “Today, both the husband and wife work and don't have the time to cook,” says Muro, “So they stop by here, pick up the pasta and some of our sauce, warm it up, and it's ready.”

Piazza del Duomo à Milan Léa-Catherine Szacka
Piazza del Duomo est le centre culturel et commercial de Milan. Véritable cœur de la ville, elle attire tant les touristes que les Milanais venus se recueillir, se détendre ou se divertir. Depuis 2010, la place comprend, outre la célèbre Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II et la magnifique cathédrale gothique, un musée dédié à l’art du XXe siècle. ubliez les affreux centres commerciaux caractéristiques de l’ère postmoderne. À Milan, c’est en 1859 qu’est née l’idée d’une galerie marchande couverte qui ferait mourir d’envie les capitales d’Europe. Fut alors organisé un concours d’architecture en vue de choisir le créateur de la future galerie qui allait relier Piazza del Duomo à Piazza della Scala. Pas moins de 176 architectes ont participé au concours, duquel est sorti vainqueur le jeune Giuseppe Mengoni. Hélas, ce petit génie de l’architecture connu un destin tragique: alors qu’il procédait à une inspection du chantier, il se tua en tombant de la coupole le 30 décembre 1877. La galerie est un passage couvert de style éclectique avec des éléments grotesques, des cariatides et des lunettes typiques de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle milanais. Aujourd’hui, elle abrite de nombreuses boutiques de luxe telles que Louis Vuitton, Borsalino ou encore Prada, des cafés connus, des hôtels, des restaurants de luxe et même un McDonald’s ! C’est huit ans après la construction du Crystal Palace de Londres que les dirigeants de la ville de Milan (une ville qui devenait alors le principal centre industriel de la péninsule italienne) voulurent construire leur édifice de prestige, symbole d’une révolution industrielle qui battait son plein. On dit même que la Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, avec sa structure de fer et de verre, aurait été une source d’inspiration pour Gustave Eiffel, qui, quelques années plus tard, allait construire sa tour. Les travaux de la galerie commencèrent en 1865 avec la pose de la première pierre par le roi Vittorio Emanuele II de Savoie lui-même. La galerie fut inaugurée deux ans plus tard. Il fallut pourtant douze ans pour que le projet soit complété. Au fil des années, la galerie fut le théâtre d’importants jalons de l’histoire milanaise. Au début du XXe siècle, les cafés de la galerie devinrent le Salon de Milan. En 1910, le peintre futuriste Umberto Boccioni s’y installa pour peindre les mouvements des passants et des consommateurs de l’époque. En août 1943, la galerie fut bombardée par les forces aériennes des alliés.

Le parcours proposé par ce nouveau musée présente une succession chronologique qui, partant du début du siècle, traverse les événements marquants et principaux courants de l’art italien tel le modernisme pour finalement se conclure de façon symbolique avec l’année 1968. Entre culte, consommation et culture, il y en a pour tous les goûts. À n’en pas douter, la Piazza del Duomo constitue une destination touristique à ne pas manquer lors de votre prochaine visite à Milan !
Sur la Piazza del Duomo se trouve également la splendide cathédrale de Milan (dit Duomo ou le Dôme). Construite entre le XIVe et le XVIe siècles, en style gothique et néogothique, cette cathédrale offre la particularité d’un toit accessible aux visiteurs. Ainsi, depuis l’escarpement du toit, les touristes peuvent, non seulement admirer d’imprenables vues sur la place principale et le tissu urbain environnant, mais aussi voir de plus près les magnifiques contreforts, arcs-rampants et pinacles du Duomo. Au duo formé par la Galleria et la cathédrale vient maintenant s’ajouter le nouveau musée du Novecento, lequel a pignon sur la place du Duomo dans le Palazzo dell'Arengario (datant des années 50). Ce musée d’une exceptionnelle richesse dévoile près de 400 oeuvres de l’art du XXe siècle. Inauguré en décembre 2010, dans un espace de 3500 mètres carrés, le nouveau musée permet aux visiteurs d’admirer les grandes collections milanaises rassemblées et enrichies à travers le temps. Ainsi, avec la rénovation du palais d’Arengario, la ville vient redonner vie à un côté de la place qui, jusqu’alors, était demeuré dans l’obscurité.

La regione del lago di Lugano, ossia quella parte di Ticino a sud del Monteceneri che si allunga come un cuneo nella Lombardia, propone soggiorni che possono soddisfare qualsiasi esigenza. Sul piano geografico la sua facile accessibilità ne fa un crocevia di collegamenti tra il nord Europa e l’Italia. ’indole della gente è tipicamente latina, quindi aperta, accogliente, disposta al dialogo e alla comunicazione. Ne deriva una certa gioia di vivere, evidente nei luoghi d’incontro: le tipiche piazze lombarde, in particolare Piazza della Riforma a Lugano, la vita dei quartieri, i grotti e le osterie, i sagrati e le rive del lago. Nonostante, o forse proprio in ragione di questa sua apertura, ha saputo conservare caratteri tipici e inconfondibili, che le assicurano una “personalità” spiccata. Molta parte delle fortune turistiche le derivano dal clima temperato, favorito dalla presenza del lago, da stagioni miti e da un’alta percentuale di giornate soleggiate. La salvaguardia del territorio, non toccato da un urbanesimo sfrenato, e i pregi del paesaggio equamente suddiviso tra montagna, collina e pianura, garantiscono condizioni di soggiorno ottimali in tutte le stagioni dell’anno, con la possibilità di escursioni in montagna e di percorsi mountain bike, nonché la pratica di tutti gli sport, tennis, golf, vela, windsurfing, sci nautico. i suoi eleganti palazzi dei centri storici e gli affascinanti edifici rurali delle campagne fino alle costruzioni moderne della “nuova architettura ticinese”, ormai famosa nel mondo, che ha in Mario Botta il suo esponente più noto. Inoltre vanno annoverate alcune antiche tradizioni: le Processioni storiche del Giovedì e Venerdì santo a Mendrisio e in altri centri del mendrisiotto, la Maggiolata nel Malcantone, la Festa d’Autunno a Lugano, le sagre religiose nei villaggi, come quelle di San Martino a Mendrisio e di San Provino ad Agno. Ticino, non si può parlare di una cucina tipica propria poiché il suo territorio, vasto e pieno di vallate, con condizioni morfologiche diverse, ha cucine che seguono l’andamento del turista che sceglie questa regione per le sue vacanze. Pertanto oggi in Canton Ticino ritroviamo due tipi di cucine: la “cucina dei grotti” (ora non più così genuina come una volta) e la “cucina sopraffina” dei ristoranti e dei grandi hotel. I grotti, nati come luoghi di ristoro e di consumo di prodotti locali, sono stati sviliti nella loro vera funzione. I grotti sono oggi luoghi di degustazione estivi, di fine settimana, agresti, di evasione nei periodi di vacanze: locali ideali per la partita a carte con gli amici o la partita a bocce con gli avventori del posto allietati da fisarmoniche, vino e.....gazzosa. This season, it’s what’s on the outside that counts, so bundle up with the hottest trends nce the cold sweeps into our fair city, we have to be armed with the right goods to get us through the season. One of the most important principles to remember is to stop sweating the outfit and start thinking about outerwear. With inside spaces well heated, you can still manage a fall ensemble. Layers are key – wear a camisole or T-shirt underneath a pullover, cover with a hoodie or blazer and finish off with either a skirt and stockings, leggings or jeans and voilá you’re ready for anything! What we are more focused on for winter is the cover-up, because this is what we’ll be seen wearing 24/7: in the car, on the metro, walking through the mall or meeting friends for lattes. We suggest having a few solid coats to break up the monotony and suit different occasions. A heavy black or grey knee-length trench is always a classic. We fancied Versace’s version with bold military shoulders and golden belts. The good news is that Versace’s new collection for H&M means we can have Donatella’s designs for less. Colour is also refreshing. Opt for a colourful coat or pick up vibrant scarves, hats, gloves and even furs. Coordinate your coat with a large leather handbag or a crossbody that will endure harsh conditions. When it comes to shoes, style and sensibility are a combo that we can readily find nowadays in footwear, so have fun with lace-ups, knee-high boots and chunky heels that can stand their own against the icy pavement.

L’arte della maiolica e la tradizione amatoria Laura Ghiandoni
Quella sera Stevene le avrebbe finalmente regalato un pegno d’amore: un piatto di ceramica su cui era dipinto il viso di lei. Sarebbe stato un regalo inatteso, e per non rovinare la sorpresa, il maestro ceramista aveva dipinto il ritratto, soltanto basandosi sulle brevi descrizioni di lui, il futuro fidanzato.
a figura femminile era disegnata con tratto sicuro, aveva i capelli raccolti e al lato del viso scendevano dei riccioli lunghi. I seni erano formosi e trattenuti dal corsetto, scivolavano in armonia con la rotondità del piatto. Sul cartiglio che attraversava il blu intenso dello sfondo c’era scritto “JULIABELLA”. Stevene sapeva che il valore simbolico dell’oggetto era pari al valore estetico. Perché con il piatto in mano, avvolto in una bella stoffa, si sarebbe presentato quella sera stessa alla famiglia di Julia, per chiederla in moglie. Così voleva la tradizione e così facevano tanti a quei tempi nel suo paese. Gli capitava spesso di fermarsi a osservare, tra i vari oggetti esposti in casa, il piatto che suo padre aveva fatto dipingere dallo stesso maiolicaro del paese vent’anni prima. Chissà se in futuro avrebbe potuto regalarne uno simile alla sua bella Julia. La tradizione del vasellame amatorio ha origine a Casteldurante (Urbania, Le Marche) nel Rinascimento e poi si è diffuso in tutta Italia. A quei tempi, regalare un utensile di ceramica era una forma di comunicazione immediata, significava voler esprimere una gentilezza verso la persona amata, attraverso un linguaggio di simboli e allegorie disegnate sull’oggetto (piatti, coppe, vasi, utensili, versatoi).

Anche gli animali rappresentati sugli utensili, avevano di solito un significato simbolico. Un augurio di fertilità era rappresentato dalla coniglia gravida, una scimmia indicava la lascivia, un cane la fedeltà. La tradizione del vasellame amatorio o matrimoniale (gamelio) era molto comune sia tra il popolo che nella nobiltà, ma con la fine dell’Umanesimo, questa bella tradizione andrà affievolendosi fino a scomparire. Casteldurante (oggi, Urbania), continuerà ancora a lungo ad essere la capitale della ceramica grazie ai suoi famosissimi istoriati (maioliche su cui sono dipinte le storia dell’antichità), i quali giungeranno a tutte le corti dell’Italia del 1500. La ceramica rimarrà fino agli inizi del 1900 il materiale essenziale per la produzione di tantissimi utensili d’uso quotidiano: piatti, pentole, vasi per la raccolta dell’uva, del grano, eccetera. Su questo si basava la maggior parte della produzione all’interno delle botteghe, fino all’invenzione e all’ultilizzo massiccio di nuovi materiali, quali la plastica e i metalli che si approprieranno di questa parte di mercato. Le botteghe dei vasai per sopravvivere al cambiamento dovranno allora abbandonare la produzione degli oggetti di tradizione e uso contadino, per passare alla produzione di ceramiche dette “bianche”, decorative e raffinate. Grottaglie, in provincia di Taranto, è un paese della Puglia che con successo ha superato questa conversione. Nel 1887 la fondazione della scuola d’arte Calò ridonerà entusiasmo alla produzione locale. Come Grottaglie e Casteldurante, un totale di 35 città italiane dal 1980 si sono unite all’associazione Città della Ceramica Italiana (AICC), allo scopo di tutelare la ceramica artistica e di qualità; valorizzarne la tradizione attraverso un circuito di iniziative e di musei, tra cui i Musei Civici di Pesaro e il Museo Internazionale di Faenza*, per conservare e portare in itinere gli esemplari della tradizione. «Le cirque de mes rêves»
De Rome à Montréal : l’histoire d’Alessandra Gonzalez, interprète dans Quidam
À la fin de la représentation, le public s’est levé et s’est mis à applaudir et à crier de joie. Je m’en souviendrai toujours. » « J’ai encore le trac avant chaque spectacle. Alors je ferme les yeux, je prends une grande respiration et je m’élance sur scène. Ensuite, la magie du cirque m’ensorcèle complètement. Les lumières, les effets spéciaux, les artistes me transportent dans le monde de Quidam. On ne peut pas faire autrement. C’est là qu’opère vraiment la magie du cirque. » Le soir de première par contre, aucun membre de sa famille n’était présent pour assister au spectacle. Sa mère, Antonella, est toutefois allée la voir à Ottawa. «À la fin du spectacle, elle s’est mise à pleurer et elle m’a dit : tu es née pour ce métier. » Sa mère a toujours été là pour elle. « C’est elle qui a passé des nuits d’insomnie à me consoler quand je broyais du noir et qui a investi temps et argent pour moi. Les mères sont toujours là en cas de besoin. » Depuis qu’elle est toute petite, Alessandra a toujours rêvé de chanter. « Mon père était un chanteur lyrique. J’ai toujours eu le chant dans le sang. » Avant de partir pour le Canada, elle avait participé à d’innombrables auditions et tenu des rôles dans plusieurs comédies musicales, dont certains rôles importants, mais c’était toujours insuffisant pour payer le loyer. « Ce métier ne te donne pas de quoi vivre, pas en Italie en tout cas. Mais c’est ce que j’aime faire, peu importe si je dois compenser avec d’autres petits boulots », révèle-t-elle. En effet, Alessandra a fait un peu de tout en Italie : commis, animatrice, hôtesse dans les foires. Elle a même distribué des dépliants de porte en porte. « J’ai fait ce que je pouvais. La situation en Italie est ainsi; il n’y a pas d’argent, et la première chose à laquelle les gens renoncent, c’est le superflu. Quand tu as de la difficulté à payer les factures à la fin du mois, le théâtre, malheureusement, devient superflu. » Pour l’instant, par contre, Alessandra ne doit plus s’en faire avec le loyer ni avec les factures. Elle vit dans l’univers magique de Quidam, un rêve que le Cirque du Soleil et son amour pour le chant ont transformé en réalité. « Ça fait près d’un an que je suis entrée au Cirque et c’est comme si c’était hier. C’est comme un rêve, un rêve dont je n’ai pas envie de sortir. » Le spectacle Quidam sera présenté à Toronto le 20 décembre 2011. Dès la fin de l’audition, tenue au siège social du Cirque du Soleil à Montréal, Alessandra s’est empressée d’appeler son (ex) petit ami en lui disant : « Je ne crois pas que ça se soit bien passé. Je ne le sens pas du tout. » Le jour même, elle est repartie pour Rome, puis le soir suivant elle recevait par courriel son contrat d’embauche avec le plus prestigieux cirque du monde : elle avait été sélectionnée parmi 2 000 personnes comme interprète du spectacle Quidam. « J’ai commencé à hurler de joie et à sauter dans toute la maison », raconte la chanteuse Alessandra Gonzalez, âgée de 23 ans et originaire de Rome. ans le spectacle, elle interprète Zoé, une jeune fille négligée par ses parents et blasée qui se réfugie dans un monde fantastique. «Je me suis inscrite par hasard au casting du Cirque du Soleil sur Facebook, et trois jours plus tard l’annonce du spectacle Quidam est apparue. Il cherchait une femme adulte aux airs de jeune fille adolescente, avec une voix de soprano, et mesurant environ un mètre et demi. Une naine dans mon genre finalement (rire). Essayons, me suis-je dit, ça cadre avec moi. Un mois et demi plus tard, j’étais à Montréal pour mon audition. » Quidam est un pronom latin classé dans la catégorie « indéfini » qui signifie « quelqu’un, un tel », un mot suspendu dans une abstraction totale, comme un passant sans visage et sans nom. « C’est ce que nous sommes tous un peu aux yeux des autres, des quidams », explique Alessandra avec l’enthousiasme de ceux qui, en revanche, tiennent un rôle indéniable dans ce monde. Son personnage, Zoé, reste en scène du début à la fin : «Je ne fais aucune acrobatie. Mais, je cours, je saute et je chante des chansons incompréhensibles, car elles sont écrites dans une langue magique, intraduisible, et malgré tout capable de transmettre des émotions avec force. » C’est la «langue du cirque », un esperanto dont les sons, sans signifier quelque chose de précis, résonnent au plus profond de notre être et parviennent à nous communiquer l’indicible. « C’est le contexte qui donne une signification au texte. Au début, moi non plus je ne comprenais pas et j’ai demandé si c’était possible d’avoir une traduction... Quelle gaffe! » explique-t-elle. Quidam a été présenté pour la première fois à Vancouver en mars 2011, « un début traumatisant », dit en riant la jeune interprète. Pour elle, seule Italienne parmi une distribution de 105 artistes, c’était aussi la première fois devant un si vaste public. « J’avais un mal de gorge incroyable et je faisais un peu de fièvre. Je venais de passer deux mois à Montréal sous la neige et un froid glacial. Mon rhume s’était étiré jusqu’au mois de mars. Avant de monter sur scène, j’étais terrorisée, mais ça a été un moment inoubliable.

On January 21, 2012, l’Opéra de Montréal will feature Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi: a milestone in the Italian tradition of melodrama.
l Trovatore pays one more tribute to the 150th anniversary of Italian Unity, most notably through the figure of its composer who, more than any other, represents the historical and social period of Risorgimento, the process of political unification of the Bel Paese. Based on Salvatore Cammarano’s and Leone Emmanuele Bardare’s book, Il Trovatore was composed by Verdi in less than two months. Premiered in Rome in 1853, Il Trovatore is the second opera of Verdi’s “popular trilogy” created between Rigoletto and La Traviata. Set in Spain at the beginning of the 15th century in an atmosphere of medieval legend, Il Trovatore expressively chants the flaming passions of love, jealousy, vengeance, hate and lust. The Opéra de Montréal’s production is proud to have Maestro Francesco Maria Colomba as orchestra director and the great Laura Brioli in the role of Azucena the gipsy, one of the most complex figures of the lyrical world. There are many reasons for representing this masterpiece according to Michel Beaulac, its artistic director: PI: Why go to the Opera? What is so special about it? Michel Beaulac: First of all, I should make some preliminary remarks. One is that the concept of art has evolved over time. Today, “multimedia”- ie the use of a variety of art forms within one show- is part of any artistic expression. Opera has always encapsulated the concept of multimedia. It is its nature, its strength. Therefore, opera is a form of art that is still quite popular, à la mode, and remains relevant today because it deals with life’s problems: love, courage, jealousy, luxury, the existential state of human beings... That is why I am convinced that opera will never go out of fashion. I believe people understand that. PI: What measures have you taken to render Opera accessible for everyone? MB: We have a formula for the youth. If you are between 18-30 years old, you can go to the opera for only $25! And if you are in high-school or Cegep, you can attend the general repetitions for free! Unfortunately, prices cannot go much lower because

we have to pay a lot of people and materials: musicians, singers, costumes and costumers, set designs and set designers, technicians... It’s not like a movie theater where you only need a projector to work the magic. At the opera, it is all about live performance and live emotion. PI: What makes a night at the opera different from other forms of entertainment? MB: I think there are two kinds of entertainment: one that is “comfortable” and the other that is “engaged”. When you go see a hockey game, you can eat, drink, scream, or even sleep. When you go to the opera, you sit down to “empty yourself ” from all your daily problems and deeply immerse yourself into the representation. It requires a considerable effort. PI: Why should the Italian community get closer to the opera? MB: Opera expresses emotions and gestures typical of the Italian way of life. Another reason lies in re-connecting with Italian culture from a historical, social and traditional perspective. Opera for Italians is part of their cultural identity - therefore they feel a natural bond for it. Next year will also be the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi... We could organize something spectacular for the Italian community. PI: Does the public need a specific knowledge before attending Il Trovatore? Should we know the plot before attending the opera? MP: I would like people to attend this representation for the show itself but also for the quality of the artists and the incredible sets. In Verdi’s perspective, opera was not only a combination of words with music: it was a holistic experience for the eyes and the ears. Intervista alla cantautrice di Termoli di Lucia Checchia
In occasione della prossima uscita del suo secondo album, Panoram Italia incontra Roberta di Lorenzo, una giovane cantautrice che sta emergendo nel panorama musicale italiano. Legata discograficamente ad Eugenio Finardi, Roberta ha una voce che rivela intensità e qualità indiscutibili.
Panoram Italia: Come è nata la tua passione per la musica e come ti sei avvicinata alla canzone d’autore? Roberta Di Lorenzo: Non era nei miei piani da bambina diventare cantautrice. Poi mio padre decise di comprare un pianoforte e iniziai a prendere lezioni. Il piano di casa divenne subito il mio scrigno segreto. Nascondevo al suo interno le poesie che scrivevo ma quello che più ricordo è la quantità di dischi in vinile che c’era in casa: da Mozart ai Pink Floyd, si ascoltava ottima musica . La passione per la scrittura mi accompagna da allora. Lasciai Termoli a 19 anni e a Firenze iniziai gli studi di canto e di chitarra. Approdata a Torino mi improvvisai attrice in una compagnia di Operette, la classica esperienza che “ti fa fare le ossa”. Guadagnai abbastanza da pagarmi i corsi della Accademia della Voce di Torino. In tutto questo sono sempre stata supportata dalla mia famiglia che, anche se lontana, ha rispettato sempre le mie scelte anche quando decisi di ritirarmi dal corso di laurea in Psicologia, lasciando a me la responsabilità di fare la cosa giusta e di commettere “anche” errori. Si fanno larghi giri a volte ma poi si ritorna nel posto più “comodo”. Io sono ritornata alla scrittura, alla mia musica. Io mi sento libera quando suono e quando scrivo. Questo vale più della felicità. PI: Passione per la scrittura e per la musica dunque. Nelle tue canzoni quanto prevale il testo e quanto conta la melodia? RDL: La canzone è un atto creativo anche se al tempo stesso nasce dall’urgenza di comunicare, di far arrivare se stessi agli altri affinché un messaggio diventi universale e faccia sentire il singolo parte del “Tutto”. Io ho scelto di raccontare attraverso le canzoni, per cui il testo ha un ruolo determinante. La musica ha però un potere di gran lunga superiore, arriva al cuore, scorre sotto pelle prima ancora della comprensione testuale. C’è una spiegazione “chimica” per tutto questo: è naturale che sia così, siamo raggiunti prima dal suono poi dal suo significato.

PI: Come è nato il sodalizio con Eugenio Finardi? RDL: Ci siamo conosciuti a Torino in occasione di un’audizione per coriste. Iniziai a cantare e poi mi chiese se scrivessi canzoni. Io ne avevo abbastanza per realizzare un album, così nacque un sodalizio artistico. Lavorare con lui è stato come seguire un corso intensivo di formazione. Mi ha insegnato tanto. Ad esempio ad acquisire consapevolezza di me, anche dei miei limiti. E, cosa più importante, ad avere fiducia. Quando sei sul palco e ti racconti davanti a tanta gente puoi scegliere di sentirti sola contro tutti o di mescolarti a loro per sentirti meno sola. In questo ambiente se collabori con dei professionisti, hai già scelto di “ fidarti e affidarti”. Per questo devo dire grazie anche al mio manager, Francesco Venuto. La persona che alimenta le mie energie artistiche ma che tiene sempre i miei piedi ben piantati a terra. Abbiamo fatto un bel percorso insieme, un percorso che prosegue anche oggi. PI: Quando componi brani musicali per i cantanti del panorama nazionale italiano, sei sempre te stessa o ti lasci condizionare dall’artista che interpreterà le tue canzoni? RDL: Scrivere per altri è ben diverso che scrivere per se stessi. Bisogna mettersi al servizio dell’interprete o immaginare come un’altra voce esprimerebbe certi concetti. L’approccio è come quello di un sarto che crea vestiti su misura; scelgo le tinte, le stoffe e poi cucio il tutto, sperando che cada bene addosso. Per me è così. Ho appena terminato di scrivere un brano per i “Sonhora”, un duo talentuoso ed energico della scena musicale Italiana, molto amati e stimati anche all’estero. Mi sono occupata della parte testuale di un loro brano. Adoro le collaborazioni musicali quando c’è comunione d’intenti. E’ un modo per tenere vive le idee, la creatività. In Italia mi piacerebbe si ritornasse a valorizzare il ruolo dell’autore. La storia è piena di nomi che hanno firmato brani “autorevoli” ma attualmente mancano delle grandi firme. Se si ritornasse a pensare e ad ascoltare di più si ritornerebbe a scrivere e a farlo bene. PI: Nei tuoi testi è possibile ritrovare Termoli, la città dove sei cresciuta? RDL: Termoli è stata tutto per me fino alla fine del Liceo: l’amore, il mare, il sogno, la scuola, la rabbia, anche la prigione per certi versi, il desiderio di evasione, del viaggio; resta una valigia che porto sempre con me. Quand’ero piccola scrissi un brano che, con nuovi arrangiamenti, è contenuto all’interno del mio primo album “L’occhio della luna” e che si intitola “Luna”; un omaggio alla mia Termoli, custode dei ricordi d’infanzia, ricordi che porterò sempre nel cuore.

PI: Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro? RDL: Continuare a scrivere, soprattutto a studiare e a viaggiare, che è la risorsa più grande, e poi “dimenticavo” , quella scuderia con 100 cavalli e quel giardino con 200 cani. Attualmente sto terminando un nuovo album, l’album della crescita, più concreto di due anni fa, più disilluso forse ma più consapevole di certo. Mi piace attribuire ad ogni lavoro che faccio un colore. “L’occhio della Luna” era “blu”, questo nuovo album è decisamente “rosso”.

Album: The Best of Giacomo Puccini (2011) Genre: Opera-Classical Giacomo Puccini grew up in a family of musicians. His father Domenico, a composer himself, passed away when his son was only five years old. Originally from Lucca (Tuscany), Puccini studied composition at the Milan Conservatory. He composed most of his operas at Torre del Lago, which is known today as Museo Villa Puccini, where he once resided. On this compilation CD, we find his most popular arias and operas; “Un Bel Di Vedremo” (Madame Butterfly), “O Mio Babbino Caro” (Gianni Schicchi-a comedy), “Manon Lescaut” (his first successful opera), “La Fanciulla del West”, “Il Tabarro”, “Le Villi”, “Tosca”, “La Bohème” and “Nessun Dorma” from Turandot. Known as one of the greatest Italian composers of his time, Puccini’s works are still very present in popular culture.
Fiorella Mannoia Album: Il Tempo e l’Armonia (2010) - Genre: Pop-Rock “Il Tempo e l’Armonia” was recorded at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona. Described as “a prayer dedicated to the troubled world we live in,” “Se Veramente Dio Esisti” written by Avion Travel, is a stand-out on the album. Her deep, powerful voice has allowed her to work throughout the years with some of Italy’s best musicians and songwriters such as Adriano Celentano, Enrico Ruggeri, Ivano Fossati and many more. In 2010, Fiorella was also one of the five female protagonists alongside Pausini, Giorgia, Elisa and Nannini at the mega earthquake relief concert Amiche per l’Abruzzo.
Emma Marrone Album: Sarò Libera (2011) - Genre: Pop-Rock “Sarò libera” is the title of Emma Marrone’s third studio album featuring the single “Tra passione e lacrime.” For those who might not know, she is the winner of the 9th edition of the Italian talent show Amici and released her very first single “Calore” right after her victory. Through all fourteen songs, this young revelation displays great ductility in her voice. Soffro di insomnia e nel dormiveglia due immagini mi martellano la mente: il fiume Isonzo e le vette delle Alpi Giulie e Carniche oggi in territorio sloveno che ho visitato l’estate scorsa dopo un giro di conferenze, una di esse a Gorizia. Mi hanno fatto da guida nella scoperta della Venezia Giulia cari amici goriziani che conoscono come il palmo della mano il territorio che abbiamo visitato. E mi tornano in mente, in italiano e in sloveno nomi come Pasubio, Sei Busi, S.Elia, Redipuglia. ono nomi che hanno una eco familiare, nomi che avevo sentito nominare da mio nonno durante la mia infanzia, seduti davanti al camino, nelle serate d’inverno bevendo un sorso di montepulciano novello, ancora asprigno, e mangiando castagne che scottavano le dita. Un piccolo mondo antico, ormai, nel nostro pianeta dominato dalla realtà virtuale. É la tra l’Isonzo ed il Carso, su un pendio scosceso e roccioso, che un giovane di 19 anni, mio nonno Filippo, di cui porto con orgoglio lo stesso nome e cognome, fante del regio esercito italiano, è stato ferito ad una spalla da un mitragliere austriaco. Era tornato in Italia dal Canada, dove era emigrato a Montreal a 16 anni, per amor di patria con altre centinaia di giovani, che avevano preso il ‘Treno degli Italiani’ da Vancouver a Montreal da dove si erano imbarcati per tornare in Italia. Arruolatosi come volontario nel 1917 mio nonno è stato fatto uscire, stordito dall’alcol, dalla trincea il 27 ottobre 1918 verso le nove di mattina e dare l’assalto ad una postazione nemica. E sento di nuovo la descrizione che mio nonno, ormai vecchio, faceva della battaglia a cui aveva partecipato.‘Esplosioni, grida di dolore e di rabbia, odore nauseante di zolfo e di gas, spari, schegge di pietra, ed il tatatata del nastro di proiettili della mitragialtrice e corpi che si accasciavano feriti o morti al suolo, lo squillo di una tromba, baionette rosse di sangue e poi il tricolore che sventolava al vento. Poi, più niente. Al risveglio in ospedale un dolore lancinante alla spalla sinistra. Per fortuna la pallottola non aveva colpito l’osso e mio nonno non rimase invalido. Così ho imparato, dalla voce di chi la guerra l’aveva fatta veramente, in prima linea, quanto sangue e quanta sofferenza era costata la vittoria della prima guerra mondiale, della Grande Guerra. Poi, a scuola, ho letto le gesta di alcuni degli eroi della vittoria militare: Baracca, Battisti, Sauro,Toti, D’Annunzio ed ho imparato a memoria le parole della canzone ‘Leggenda del Piave’, insegnatami da un professore, reduce del fronte russo. E poi ho visto il film La Grande Guerra di Mario Monicelli e la dissacrazione del mio schietto patriottismo di fanciullo fatta da un altro regista Francesco Rosi in

un altro film, Uomini Contro. E nello scrivere queste parole mi chiedo quale chiave di lettura usare per evitare l’agiografia, per far sì che la storia diventi concretamente magistra vitae. Sono trascorsi oltre 90 anni, ma il significato di quel lontano 4 novembre 1918, che ha permesso a Trento ed a Trieste di diventare parte della Patria italiana, resta intatto. Anzi dovrebbe costituire al giorno d’oggi, in un’Italia sempre più multietnica e bersaglio di mire secessionistiche, la fonte di un sano patriottismo e la base di una memoria collettiva condivisa. La vittoria italiana del 1918 è costata un prezzo altissimo, oltre 600.000 morti ed un milione di feriti. Ogni regione d’Italia ha dato il suo contributo alla causa comune, il bene della Patria e la definitiva unificazione di ogni sua parte. L’Italia è diventata, grazie al sacrificio della vita di tanti suoi figli, veramente la Patria di tutti come le lapidi ai caduti in ogni singolo paese o città eloquentemente dichiarano o come rivela lo schietto amore verso l’Italia di tanti abitanti di città di confine come Gorizia o Trieste. Accanto al 25 aprile, fine della seconda guerra mondiale, ed al 2 giugno,vittoria dei repubblicani al referendum su monarchia o repubblica, due date fondamentali per l’Italia di oggi, va celebrato ancora di più il 4 novembre, perchè ogni cittadino italiano, ovunque egli viva nel mondo, può riconoscersi nel significato storico e simbolico che questa data esprime. Il tatticismo e militarismo astratto del generale Cadorna causò inutilmente la morte di tantissimi giovani e portò al disastro di Caporetto. Tuttavia la controffensiva dell’esercito italiano, partita dal Piave il 24 maggio 1917 e conclusasi il 4 novembre del 1918 sotto il comando del generale Diaz, ha seguito una logica militare diversa ed ha saputo far emergere l’amore per la Patria anche nel semplice soldato e ridargli la forza d’animo necessaria per battersi e vincere. Ed ha portato, in effetti, con l’aiuto degli alleati americani, alla vittoria. Delle tre feste nazionali il 4 novembre è, a mio avviso, la data che va meritatamente celebrata, perchè è la celebrazione di una pagina fondamentale della creazione dell’ identità del popolo italiano, della nascita della sua memoria storica condivisibile, al di là delle simpatie ideologiche e politiche. E l’Italia di oggi che si avvia verso una forma decentrata di governo, verso uno stato federale, eviterà le sabbie mobili del secessionismo presente nelle finalità della Lega Nord solo se date come il 4 novembre verranno celebrate degnamente. Il suolo delle regioni di quella che dovrebbe eventualmente diventare la Padania, va ricordato continuamente a Bossi ed ai leghisti, è intriso di tanto sangue italiano, di tutte le regioni. Gli egoismi dei leghisti e le accuse verso ‘Roma ladrona’ vanno soppesate con il prezzo del sangue versato per renderle italiane. Al senatùr Umberto Bossi, capo della Lega Nord, consiglio di fare di tanto in tanto una visita al cimitero militare di Redipuglia ed all’Altare della Patria a Roma e di meditare davanti alla tomba del Milite Ignoto. E forse capirà che anche Alberto da Giussano -il cavaliere che ha difeso il Carroccio dei comuni della Lega Lombarda contro Federico Barbarossa, imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero nella battaglia di Legnano nel 1176, e simbolo usato oggi dalla Lega Nord - era italiano.

“Il Brutto Male” It’s a phone call you never dream to receive. Your doctor’s secretary calls to reschedule an appointment with you after receiving results of preliminary tests you performed a week before. So you ask ”Why? Is there something abnormal with the results of my scan?” The famous line she responds is, of course, “Unfortunately, I am not authorized to reveal this information, you’ll just have to come in and see the doctor.” Your heart stops as you put down the phone and the waiting game begins. One automatically assumes the worst; “What if the results signal a malignant tumour is manifesting within my body? What will happen to me next?” ancer is a word that nobody wishes to discuss. Many of us have at least one relative or friend that is battling or has battled cancer. The prevalence of this horrific disease is approximately 1 in 3. So when you go to work or take the bus in t he mor ning and sit down next to two other people, look to your right and to your left, one of you will develop this disease at some point in your life. What a scary thought! Medically, cancer is defined as a hyper-proliferation of cells which multiply out of control until a tumour is formed. The transition is from a healthy cell to a malignant one. Interestingly, not all cancers are malignant, as some may be benign and surgery is all that is required to remove it. What one must worry about are free radicals that travel within the body searching for a place to attack. When they find the tissue of preference, they force the cells to multiply out of control, beyond the physiological norms that the body can handle. These cancer-causing agents are found in our surrounding environment, and it seems like everything causes cancer these days. But what we must keep in mind is that it is the dose which makes the poison. Minute amounts of carcinogenic material will not necessarily develop into cancer. However, repeated exposure to unhealthy lifestyle habits may. So here are some risks factors which may lead to the development of “il brutto male”: • Tobacco use: So not only does tobacco target the heart and cause heart attacks, it is linked to lung cancer development. Another reason to quit smoking!! So, tell “Papa” to put down the cigar and to think twice before he inhales all that toxicity. • Low fruit and vegetable intake: Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants which neutralize the effects of free radicals in the blood stream. Therefore, the more antioxidants consumed, the less likely free radicals will attack tissues. Replace cannolis for dessert with strawberries instead! It will work in your favour! • Obesity: The fact that one reaches this state is most commonly due to unhealthy lifestyle factors. When the body is carrying more weight, there exists more metabolically active tissue that favours free radical settlement and thus produces harm. • Physical Inactivity: Besides the numerous beneficial effects physical activity has on many other diseases, studies have shown that physically active people develop protection factors against free radicals where they do not tend to bomb surrounding tissues so readily. The key to staying healthy is prevention. Early detection of cancer can be treated. The point of no return occurs when one refuses to make healthy choices and winds up with an aggressive form of the disease for which at that point, little can be done.

“Guida – decalogo alle formalità di legge e fiscali concernenti le successioni a causa di morte in Italia”

Dopo aver attraversato l’oceano in cerca di fortuna, dopo tanti sacrifici per creare un bel patrimonio e dare ai figli una professione e miglior futuro ci si accorge che il tempo vola e, sfortunatamente, la vita arriva alla sua fine. uante volte ci si è domandato: “il papà, la mamma, un fratello, una sorella, altri parenti sono defunti lasciando dei beni in Italia, che cosa fare? Quali sono le formalità da espletare per entrare in possesso di questi patrimoni? Considerando la complessità dell’argomento, si cercherà, sommariamente, di riassumerlo, chiarendo i punti essenziali della normativa italiana che lo disciplina. A tal uopo, si fornisce una sorta di decalogo, qui di seguito riportato succintamente, di dieci cose da sapere per una successione sicura ai fini degli adempimenti di legge: 1) verificare, in primo luogo, se il defunto ha lasciato disposizioni di volontà che debbano trovare immediata esecuzione, ad esempio relative alla donazione di organi o alle modalità di sepoltura. 2) assenza, invece, di termini stringenti da osservare per la devoluzione del patrimonio del defunto, infatti il diritto di accettare un’eredità si prescrive in dieci anni. 3) accertare se il defunto ha o meno lasciato un testamento per stabilire chi sono gli aventi diritto all’eredità. Se non c’è il testamento la successione si devolverà a favore dei soggetti e per le quote fissate dalla legge. 4) qualora si sia già in possesso del testamento olografo (scritto a mano) del defunto è sufficiente consegnarlo ad un notaio unitamente ad un estratto per riassunto dell’atto di morte, affinché si proceda alla sua pubblicazione. 5) nell’ipotesi si ritenga che il defunto abbia lasciato un testamento pubblico oppure un testamento olografo affidato ad un notaio, ma non se ne conosca il nome, si potrà fare un’apposita richiesta, accompagnata dall’estratto dell’atto di morte, agli Uffici a ciò preposti. 6) obbligo di presentare la Dichiarazione di Successione, qualora nell’eredità vi siano beni immobili che si trovano sul territorio italiano o diritti reali immobiliari (superficie, enfiteusi,usufrutto, uso, abitazione, servitù prediale) sugli stessi.

la presentazione della Dichiarazione di Successione deve avvenire entro un anno (6-12 mesi) dalla morte del testatore, in mancanza vi saranno multe e penalità da pagare; sono previste specifiche deroghe sulla decorrenza del termine nel caso di fallimento del defunto, di rinuncia o di accettazione beneficiata dell’eredità (tre mesi). La sua presentazione deve effettuarsi, su apposito modulo prestampato presso l’Ufficio delle Entrate competente, da un erede o da un incaricato munito di procura legale e fotocopia di un documento degli eredi, i quali, devono essere in possesso di codici fiscali italiani, con allegati diversi documenti tra cui il certificato di morte e di ultima residenza in Italia, la dichiarazione sostitutiva di atto notorio, la visura catastale, il prospetto di liquidazione delle imposte dovute, un’eventuale copia autenticata del testamento, un eventuale atto di rinuncia all’eredità, un eventuale certificato di destinazione urbanistica dei terreni (non necessario per quelli a destinazione agricola), ecc. 8) le richieste di voltura catastale vanno depositate presso l’Ufficio del Territorio entro 30 giorni dalla presentazione della Dichiarazione di Successione. 9) gli importi da pagare presso Banche o Poste vanno calcolati seguendo un prospetto di auto-liquidazione che si riferisce alle varie imposte da pagare (ipotecaria, catastale, bollo, conservatoria, tributi speciali) oltre ad eventuali sanzioni amministrative. 10) la Dichiarazione di Successione viene trascritta presso gli Uffici dell’Agenzia del Territorio (ex Conservatorie dei registri immobiliari) su richiesta esclusiva dell’Ufficio dell’ Agenzia delle Entrate che ha ricevuto la dichiarazione; tali procedure permettono così di avere il titolo legittimante della proprietà a favore dell’erede e/o degli eredi.

Established in 1986, senior home complex Résidence Au Fil de l’Eau has come from humble beginnings to grow into a successful and respected business. Their secret to success? Keep it in the family and treat everyone as one of your own.
t Résidence Au Fil de l’Eau, family comes first. The owner of this beautiful waterfront senior complex, Salvatore Migliara, says they’ve made it twenty-five years thanks in large part to their clientele. “My dad would always say the way to go about it is we have to run this like a family business. Our tenants are not our tenants, they are our family.” His father, the late Calogero Migliara, is the founder of Résidence Au Fil de l’Eau. He arrived in Canada from Italy in 1952 at the age of 17 and soon after started working in construction. It was his vision and his dream to build a seniors’ home that would be passed on to his son and to future generations. “When we came to this area of Rivière-des-Prairies back in the eighties,” reminisces Migliara, “there was nothing. We were in the middle of nowhere. I remember telling my dad, ‘you’re crazy, this will never work’. But he told me to trust him.” Indeed Calogero Migliara was right and the business grew even beyond his dreams. It all started with one small building in 1986, then a second building opened to residents in 1990, a third in 2000, and finally the last phase was completed in 2004. Today, there are 582 apartments and close to 800 people that live here. It’s an achievement, Migliara admits, but it didn’t come without hard work. “We went through the good times and the bad times, the ups and the downs, like the reality of any family. But we survived twenty-five years when a lot of our competitors were going down under.” Migliara believes there is one crucial aspect that separates Au Fil de l’Eau from other senior homes and that is the tight family unit that is present in the halls and everywhere you turn. “An apartment is an apartment, generally speaking they’re all the same,” states Migliara. “The difference is how you feel when you walk in here.”

Warmth is certainly one thing you will feel when you enter this residence. The staff is very friendly, tenants look comfortable and happy, the view of the river brings a sense of tranquility, and the ambiance is very inviting.

“Out of our 582 apartments,” Migliara explains, “only nine are empty right now. There’s a reason for that. You see the joy here. Tenants are happy.” Giulia Di Cesare, like many others, would definitely attest to that. She has been living at Au Fil de l’Eau for 12 years and enjoys every part of the lifestyle, including her active social calendar. It includes singing in the residence choir, competing in mini-golf tournaments at their stunning private 18-hole mini-golf course, watching movies at their 50-seat theatre, and spending time with the friends she’s made over the years. “I was very reluctant to move into a seniors’ home at first,” she says. “I saw other places and would come out crying. But the minute I walked in here and saw the bright, big windows, the smiling faces, and my apartment, I said, this is it!” It is comments like this one that keep Salvatore Migliara motivated but you can see very clearly that he loves spending time here just as much as his tenants do. “I spend time with everyone,” he says. “We make wine together, I come to mass here on Sundays. My father always said you need to get involved, and participate in the activities. I think that people sense our dedication and involvement. They sense that tight family feeling we have here and that’s how we’ve maintained a good reputation over all these years.” Migliara believes his father Calogero, who passed away in 2003, would be very proud if he were here today, but unfortunately he did not get to see his dream become reality. Migliara says his father would be especially happy to see how his son and his grandson, Charlie, who is now also involved in running the business, have carried on his legacy. “This is something that has reached the third generation,” Migliara says proudly. “There are very few projects like this that have reached the third generation. There’s nothing more rewarding than a family business going from generation to generation.”

“I always tell my kids, never forget what your grandfather told us. My nonno Orlando was a man of few words, a very wise man, a humble and honourable person, there are no other words I would choose to describe him. If I could have one more day with him, I would be certain that my time would be well spent. I would do all things my grandfather loved to do. For starters I would make sure I’d be on time to pick him up and set off to our family country place there my grandfather was always in his best moods. He would sit on this big rock that was in front of the garden as if it was his throne, for he was the king of the garden and I would work endlessly in the garden perfecting it for him making sure that everything was in its place ready to go. And he would be there on his rock, happy at how we were going to bring life to this garden. As the day would come to an end, I would just wish to have one last glass of wine with my grandfather and thank him for everything he has taught me and how honoured I am to carry his name. Alla memoria di mio padre Giulio Marinaro Questa testimonianza è in memoria di mio padre Giulio Marinaro nato nel 1910 a Montelongo, (Campobasso) emigrato in Canada nel 1954 e deceduto a Montreal nel 1990. Il mio papà era estroverso, sincero, per lui ero la sua Iduccia, essendo l’ultima di 4 figli, per lui rimanevo sempre la piccirella di papà. Lui era naturalmente portato alla tenerezza che riscaldava il cuore. Nel mio ricordo, papà era quel genitore affettuoso che mi riempiva di coccole e, anche l’uomo giovane dentro che rispondeva a ogni mia domanda e non esitava ad aiutarmi. Altruista al massimo, mio padre aveva una marcia in più, perché aveva tanta dolcezza e comprensione che traspariva in ogni sua parola.Con la morte una persona non scompare; la sua energia si trasforma in une corrente d’affetto che ti fà sentire quella persona vicina. Difficile perdere un padre improvvisamente; papà orfano di madre e di padre in tenera età si era fatto da solo, ed era cresciuto con sani principi e valori morali. Ho perso un mito, una leggenda, un punto di riferimento. Era il mio consigliere di fiducia, era il mio idolo, era il pilastro dell’intera famiglia Marinaro.Se avressi ancora la possibilità di averlo qui vicino a me, gli direi semplicemente “Grazie papà“, per tutto quello che ci hai lasciato in eredità e per l’amore che ci hai donato. Giuseppe Giannone, my father, my friend If I could spend one more day with you I would insist on sharing a glass or two of good homemade wine just like we used to make together. As I gaze at you in this picture which was taken in Italy in 1948 when you were only 23, I realize how I have become like you. Just as you taught us love, compassion and generosity, my brother Frank and I portray these values on others. If I had one more day I would tell you of the many travels that I have done since your passing in 2006. I would tell you of Barbara’s and I 25th wedding anniversary in Italy. When I saw “Giuseppe” written on a wall outside a church in Naples I knew you were with me. When I turned 50 years old on a cruise while in Mexico and the shipboard band played one of your favorite songs “Spanish Eyes” every night, I knew you were with me. So to spend one more day with you I would tell you what a great garden my mother still looks after every year She still makes those wonderful pizzas from scratch. With fondest memories of my mom-in-law Rosa Pasculli (June 9,1919 - December 10, 2003) As I begin to write this tribute I am so overcome with emotion I can hardly breathe or swallow past the constriction in my throat. I am First Nations Canadian and I married into a large Italian family. Mom, was the mother of ten children, she and my father-in-law with their family, imigrated to Canada in July 1965. My father-in-law was accidently killed at his job site in December 1966, leaving Mom to raise nine of the children on her own. In 1967, she purchased her home in the St. Clair and Dufferin area and completed the task of educating and developing independent adults. She suffered their failures, celebrated their triumphs, participated in each of their weddings and shared the joy of their children entering the family and attending the milestones her grandchildren achieved. Mom worked hard to accomplish her goals, and what a pleasant surprise when she accepted our invitation(s) to travel to Florida on vacation(s). This was an opportunity for my children and each of us, to enjoy Nonna’s/Mom’s company in a relaxed atmosphere. We went up to Disney World and I was amazed when she went on the rides and what a laugh, in the Haunted House when the ghoul limped up, leaned forward and frightened her. This is one of the stories that is told during our get togethers, in fact everyone has a favourite memory and as we listen to each other relate and re-create the scenes, the humour and actions, bring her so near it is as though she is present. She was a very fair and optimistic person, and with such a large family I’m sure she heard many trials and tribulations as time passed. She never judged anyone, she didn’t take sides, she listened and led the conversation in a manner that would prompt you to arrive at your resolution to the problem. Mom was the personality who kept the family united and in communication with each other, therefore if I were granted one more day with Mom, I would invite the seventy-plus members of our family to dinner so that she and her family would once again exchange conversations, share laughter and the family would be together, creating collectibles of good memories, like albums of smiling faces. L’Associazione Padovana del Québec, ha festeggiato il suo trentacinquesimo anniversario con un bel pranzo. Fondata nel lontano 15 marzo 1976, il suo primo presidente è stato Romeo Monteschio. Grazie anche alla perseveranza e all’appoggio del comitato attuale, dei suoi soci, dei suoi amici e dei numerosi simpatizzanti, il gruppo continua ad’essere molto attivo. Durante la manifestazione, hanno sottolineato e condividiviso con i più giovani, i costumi e le usanze legate alla terra d’origine. Nel menù non poteva mancare la polenta, ingrediente tipico della cucina padovana. La festa, si è svolta in un’atmosfera all’insegna del folklore e dell’allegria. I partecipanti hanno cantato e ballato al ritmo delle canzoni e delle note del fisarmonicista Ercole.
On Thursday November 3rd at Cinéma Guzzo Marché Central, hundreds of family members, professionals in education, psychologists, criminologists and others, were at the launch of “Say NO to Gangs”, a major campaign against street gangs initiated by the organization “Children Now”. During the evening, a video clip of singer Céline Dion underlining how important it is to “prevent bullying and violence among children through education and positive encouragement” as well as a second video clip raising awareness about this social phenomenon were presented for the first time on this occasion and will continue playing for a period of three months before the start of featured movies. A key player in this campaign, also present at the event, is gang expert Luciano Bentenuto who stated that “Saying no to gangs is everybody’s business”. Children Now aims to help deprived and underprivileged children and to inform teenagers to prevent them from joining gangs. As part of the campaign, the book “Youth and Street Gangs” will become part of the curriculum of participating schools.

Lo scorso 22 ottobre, più di trecentocinquanta persone si sono riunite presso la sala di ricevimenti “Le Mont Blanc” a Laval per festeggiare il trentacinquesimo anniversario dell’Associazione Regionale dei Marchigiani, ALMA Canada. In questa occasione si è festeggiato anche il quindicesimo anniversario del programma di borse di studio. L’intrattenimento musicale è stato curato da Terry V e la sua orchestra. I comici Stefano & Gianluca (apparsi su RaiUno) che erano venuti direttamente da Ascoli Piceno, hanno celebrato il folklore marchigiano attraverso le loro scenette che hanno causato l’ilarità dei presenti. Come la tradizione vuole, anche quest’anno sono state consegnate le borse di studio a nove studenti di origine Marchigiana (quattro al livello collegiale e cinque al livello universitario) che erano stati scelti da una giuria composta dalla Sgra Marisa Bellini, dal Professor Filippo Salvatore e da Me. Presso il Buffet “Costa del Mare” a Montréal-Nord, ha avuto luogo lo scorso 16 ottobre, il banchetto dell’Associazione Guglionesana del Québec “Usconium” che celebrava il trentennale della sua fondazione. La manifestazione aveva lo scopo di riunire i paesani, gli amici e i simpatizzanti per una giornata all’insegna delle tradizioni, del divertimento e dell’allegria. Durante la celebrazione della “guglionesanità” a Montréal, un momento memorabile è stato l’intervento del Prof. Filippo Salvatore il quale ha tracciato un ritratto dell’ associazione “Usconium” inserendola nel fenomeno dell’immigrazione molisana qui a Montréal e rendendo omaggio ai dirigenti che per decenni hanno mantenuto vivo il ricordo della loro terra d’origine e le sue tradizioni. Tra balli, canti e scherzi, la parte musicale è stata curata dal fisarmonicista Franco Guido. Per dare ai presenti l’impressione di percorrere simbolicamente le strade di Guglionesi, ad ogni tavolo è stato poi assegnato il nome di una via o di un monumento caratteristico della cittadina posta su una bella collina dirimpetto al mare Adriatico. Nel corso della manifestazione, sono stati ringraziati tutti i membri del comitato per la loro dedizione. Tra i numerosi premi sorteggiati, c’era anche un quadro “Il Veliero” offerto dal pittore e Presidente dell’associazione il Sig. Nicolino Di Paolo.

On October 22, the Italian-Canadian Community Foundation held its 27th annual Governors’ Ball at the Sheraton in Laval. Organized under the presidency of Mr. Tony Loffreda and the honourary presidency of Mr. Sam Scalia, the evening turned out to be a great success with $325,000 raised. Under the theme “Volare fino alla luna” inspired by the legendary Frank Sinatra’s famous song, the room reflected the glamour and excitement of the 1940’s. With Paul Chacra’s 1945 “Big Band” and a special performance by Jacynthe, more than 600 guests were entertained by professional dancers, singers and musicians. On this prestigious occasion, the FCCI presented nine new governors.

With the ongoing adversity today’s Catholic Church faces, one cannot but admire the willpower it takes to accept the challenges of entering the priesthood. After 13 years of dedicated hard work and sacrifice, Nicola Di Narzo, originally from Rivière-des-Prairies and Montreal-North, lovingly accepted those challenges on November 11, at Sainte-Cécile Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Cathedral before a packed house of proud supporting worshipers, and celebrated his first mass November 12 at Chiesa Della Madonna Della Difesa. The many who personally know Nicola have not only been witness to his kindness and charisma, but have also seen the fervour with which he serves his Church. Through his ordination, Catholics and non-Catholics alike have gained a true apostle for peace and betterment in our community. Let us now encourage Nicola with all our might!

ACCÉSSS’s activities are inspired by a vision entailing the prevention of disease and the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices. ACCÉSSS offers a full range of training sessions in different areas such as family violence, senior citizens, breast cancer and other cancer prevention, nutrition and healthy dieting as well as children and youth health. All of ACCÉSSS training is adapted to Quebec’s multicultural reality and is provided to community organisations as well as to the public health and social services network. ACCÉSSS also have a workshop on
understanding the social and health services by ethnocultural communities. Also concerned with men’s health, ACCÉSSS is in the process of developing an information program on prostate cancer. This type of cancer is on the increase and is the most common cancer in men. ACCÉSSS also produces a series of brochures in 17 languages on different health subjects. On October 15 th, more than thirty five hundred people gathered at Parc Jean-Drapeau (Île Sainte-Hélène) for the sixth annual “Light The Night Walk” in Montreal. Families and co-workers walked in twilight carrying illuminated balloons: white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of someone who died. Completed with music and food, the goal of this yearly initiative is to raise funds and awareness in the fight against blood cancer. This year alone, over $750,000 was raised, surpassing the initial goal of $675,000. All proceeds will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. ‘Light The Night’ is also the night for a remembrance ceremony to commemorate those who have lost their battle to cancer and to bring hope to those affected by the disease.

Quest’anno il programma si è arricchito di nuove iniziative. La piccola fattoria con varie specie di animali è servita a ricordare le origini agricole del quartiere, mentre l’esposizione di fotografie e automobili d’epoca ha voluto riportarci ai bei tempi di una volta. Sono anche stati offerti tantissimi dolci e palloncini. Nei pressi del parco Wilfrid-Bastien, non sono mancati gli applausi durante i concerti del cantautore Nicola Ciccone e di Nanette Workman. Anche il sindaco, On. Michel Bissonnet, ha condiviso la sua soddisfazione.

One Person’s Experience A very successful restaurant owner was once being interviewed on a local Montreal radio show and as the interview was winding to an end, he expressed some final thoughts and experiences. RISING FROM THE ASHES Cesare Prandelli’s path to Euro 2012 By Dante Di Iulio
From lifting the World Cup in 2006 to failing to make it out of the group stages in South Africa, the Italian game went from riches to rags in one fell swoop. Since the appointment of Cesare Prandelli, a wind of change has swept through the Italian game thanks to his (r)evolutionary approach to the national team. Prandelli was given carte blanche with his new team and aimed to forge its identity through Meritocracy. electing the right mix of youth and experience, he has chosen the best players available to him, while maintaining balance on the field and in the dressing room. In just over a year, the results are remarkable. Securing their ticket to Euro 2012 with two games to spare, while conceding two goals and keeping eight clean sheets, the Azzurri collected 26 points from a possible 30. The numbers are especially notable, given that they come so soon after one of the darkest chapters in the nation’s footballing history. Group C wasn’t filled with the most difficult opponents; however the Azzurri took no game lightly, fielding the best XI available in an attempt to show the footballing world that they mean business. Using the 4-3-1-2 system, Prandelli’s team possesses a robust defence, a versatile midfield and a fluid attack, making them a serious contender in Ukraine and Poland in June, 2012. Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon is a rock, and his experience and leadership have been a guiding light for this team throughout the qualifying campaign. With Sirigu and De Sanctis as back-ups, the Azzurri are confident between the sticks. Prandelli has developed younger defenders during his tenure, and with eight clean sheets and two goals conceded, the defence is brimming with confidence. Ranocchia and Chiellini have formed an excellent partnership, while Bonucci, Astori and Barzagli have slotted in nicely when called upon. His fullback options aren’t as robust, selecting from Maggio, Cassani, Balzaretti and Criscito. Some question Prandelli’s reluctance to utilize Milan’s Ignazio Abate, who has developed into a superb right back. However, Chiellini’s stellar performances in the left-back position for Juventus provide an interesting option to Prandelli. Using Chiellini on the left flank allows the team’s formation to switch to a 3-4-3 when in attack, allowing the right back to push up more freely. As a result, Italy will have more speed on the counter and will be more dangerous on Mario Balotelli set-pieces as Ranocchia, Bonucci and Chiellini are superb in the air. Prandelli has a wealth of options to choose from in midfield. He’s attempted to emulate the Barcelona-style system, emphasizing possession of the ball and interchanging positions. He’s usually opted to play De Rossi-Pirlo with Thiago Motta, Aquilani, Marchisio or Nocerino to their left, and Montolivo taking the trequartista position. All capable of maintaining possession, passing, defending and scoring, they have, at times, faced difficulty when breaking through the final third, especially against deep-lying defensive teams. They were able to beat Spain, tie Germany and go unbeaten in qualifying and if this team goes far, it will rest on the shoulders of these versatile playmakers. Nine strikers were tested during qualifying but in the final straight he settled on his favoured partnership, a combination that promised both invention and clinical finishing. This partnership has however been torn apart as Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano both require surgery and will be out for at least six months, and possibly the Euros. Thankfully, Mario Balotelli’s clinical finishing for Manchester City provides Prandelli with a goalscoring talent unseen since Roberto Baggio. The Italian faithful will hope that Super Mario has his Euro 2012 opponents lamenting “Why always him?” To fill the void left by Cassano and Rossi, Prandelli will look to the likes of: Pazzini, Giovinco, Matri, Osvaldo and (maybe) Totò Di Natale to help bring the boys in blue to victory. Considering the disastrous showing in South Africa from which Prandelli was chosen to replace Marcello Lippi, the former Fiorentina mister has achieved remarkable things in a relatively short period of time.
