December 31, 2015-January 6, 2016 Dubbo Photo News Here’s a fantastic snap overlooking Dubbo from Obley Road by our photographer Ruby Janetzki.
DUBBO CITY LIFE Alexandria Kelly What a year! IT’S been a very, very big year here at Dubbo Photo News and Dubbo Weekender – and a very exciting one at that. We kicked off the year by re-launching Dubbo Weekender as a paid ($2 cover price) premium newspaper and this year it’s been a real hit. A big congratulations to Dubbo Weekender editor Jen Cowley and her team – the publication really does speak for itself each week and I’m beyond confident in labelling it has the best regionally produced publication anywhere in Australia! We hope you continue to keep reading and enjoying it, because Jen and the team have even bigger things in store for 2016. In June this year the company also said farewell to long-standing Sales Manager Donna Falconer, who chose to step back and chase some other passions. Donna was with Dubbo Photo News and Dubbo Weekender for more than 10 years and there would be no way to thank her enough for all that she has done for our publications. We know she’s got some big things in the works for next year, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for her. And on that note, we were thrilled to welcome Rod Crowfoot to our team in July as our General Manager. Rod has worked tirelessly over the last six months to make this paper the best it possibly can be, and if the 2016 plan is anything to go by, things are only going to get much, much bigger. His vision, his passion for this paper and the community and his dedication are second to none. Dubbo Photo News itself has continued to grow and thrive as Dubbo’s favourite
paper this year. As always we couldn’t do it without the support of our local advertisers who make this paper possible every week and we continue to encourage you to support the local businesses who support us – we will always be avid supporters of keeping things local, because we’re local ourselves. With that said, without the dedicated team here the paper wouldn’t be possible either, so a big thank you to them for all their hard work and passion this year. And finally a big thanks to the Dubbo community who continue to support us every week – we love that you love what we do. And we make every effort to give back as much as we can – by supporting your events, covering your stories and highlight-
ing the local issues. We also continue to support community organisations and charities with our yearly themed editions, and by donating tens of thousands of dollars annually in advertising for their events. Looking back, it truly has been an incredible journey this year and we can’t wait to ring in 2016 and enjoy all it has to offer. We hope you enjoying looking through the pages of today’s edition and reliving the year that was – because things are only going to get better!
Our office OUR staff will enjoy a well-deserved holiday to catch up, rest, and enjoy some time
with family and friends. Our office is currently closed and will be re-opening next week, on Monday, January 4, at 9am. If you’d like to contribute photos in the meantime or make any enquiries, our contact email address photos@dubbophotonews. com.au is still operating and one of the team will be back to you after the holidays. We hope all our readers enjoyed a very Merry Christmas and are looking forward to wrapping 2015 up. Whether you’re celebrating here in Dubbo or abroad, we hope you get to enjoy some quality time with those you love and will be bringing in the New Year in style. From the team here at Dubbo Photo News, all the best and we’ll see you in 2016! – Here’s to another great week!

NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999
up on your dreams I will spend New Year’s... with my family and friends I’m looking forward to 2016 because... it’s a new year
2015 has been a year of highs and lows. There have been plenty of highs that we’ve been glad to celebrate here in the pages of Dubbo Photo News, however, sadly, there have been too many bad news stories around Australia and the world – and no matter how hard you might try to insulate yourself from being affected by events such as the Paris terror attacks and the evils of ISIS, inevitably they’ve brought sadness into our lives. So we hope this ‘Best of’ edition of Dubbo Photo News gives you reasons to forget about the bad stuff for a while, and reflect back on 2015 in a more positive light. It’s been the individual success stories we’ve reported throughout the year that help us realise that, for every awful person we hear about in the news, there are a hundred good people striving to make the world a better place, each in their own way. Just like a nervous actor holding their sparkling new trophy at the podium on Logies night, and telling us that “there are so many people I’d like to thank and I hope I don’t forget to mention anyone”, I’m going to remind you about just some of the good stories we’ve reported during 2015. This list is not meant to be complete, so please don’t fret if your favourite story isn’t mentioned! At the start of the year, Bill O’Shea celebrated 40 years as an artist, committing his visions of Australia to canvas. Having graduated from her medical studies at the University of NSW, Khyarne Biles returned home to Dubbo to take up a position at our base hospital. I’m one of those who believe we need to encourage school leavers who have to go away for tertiary studies to then bring their new skills back to Dubbo, so Khyarne’s story is a great one for our city. Also in our 2015 news pages was soccer player Indianna Asimus who picked up medals at the Futsal Nationals, cricketer Tim Cox was pictured with his proud family after being named ‘Dubbo Sportsperson of the Year’, and Dubbo hosted the 2015 NSW State Junior Cycling Championships. Local firies and businesses got together to hold a Charity Barefoot Bowls day for Matthew ‘Jacko’ Jackson who had been injured in a motorbike accident late in 2014. That was just one of many, many community events organised for local people who needed a helping hand during tough times. Luke Wrigley was recruited for the Australian Kart Championships, the best of our local cricketers won the Country Championships for the second year in a row, Prezlea Brouggy was selected to represent the Australian Appaloosa Association at the World Show in Texas, and Imogen Felton’s star was shining brightly on the basketball court. The winner of the 2015 Dubbo Photo News Bachelor Boy was pictured on our March 26 cover alongside visiting celebrity Lynzey Murphy who was one of the favourites on this year’s series of “My Kitchen Rules”. Meanwhile, we were able to claim at least some of the credit for the wedding of Stacey Dorin and Rick Walker who met as part of Dubbo Photo News’ Bachelor Girl promotion. There was the hugely popular Sleep-Out at Victoria Park No.1 Oval as part of Dubbo’s commemorations of 100 years since the original Anzacs landed at Gallipoli. Geoff Mann reported that St John’s College student Kyle Gibson gained selection in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Under-16 rugby union team, and that Macquarie Anglican Grammar School student Isobella Cameron raced away with several medals at the Christian Schools Athletics Games on the Gold Coast. I could fill literally ten Page 3 columns with Dubbo’s 2015 success stories... It’s been our pleasure to be Dubbo’s favourite source of local news and information this year and we look forward to doing it all again in 2016.

Update: Matilda’s Awareness By RUBY JANETZKI EARLIER in the year Dubbo Photo News met Ben Murray who shared the story of his little girl Matilda who was diagnosed with Myeloradiculitis when she was two years old. The rare condition is similar to polio, and Matilda is thought to be the only case in Australia. This year Ben has been hosting barbecues at the front of Brennan’s Mitre 10 each Saturday. The barbecues have helped raise much-needed funds, allowing for Matilda to have intense therapy at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and a
home therapy play gym installed at home. Ben will continue to host the barbecues into the New Year and continue to raise money for Matilda’s care, with the aim still being to get to California for specialised treatment. The biggest barbecue day so far helped raise $1400 for Matilda, so head on down to Brennan’s Mitre 10 on Saturday mornings and grab yourself a sausage sanger and support a great cause! To keep up to date with Matilda, visit www.matildasawareness.com.au or find Matilda’s Awareness on Faceebook.

LOOKING BACK ON 2015
Dan continues to expand his Wings Out West By ELLA MCMILLAN LAST time Dubbo Photo News caught up with pilot Dan Compton he had some huge projects in the pipeline; we spoke to him again last week and he reports he has had a busy year. Having previous experience with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and the air force, Dan currently runs Dubbo-based flying school Wings Out West. He has always had a passion for the community and would love to use that passion to help form an Indigenous Flying School, alongside his student Adam Wiseman. Both are committed to keeping the idea alive. Recently Adam finished all required flying hours and is closer than ever to becoming an instructor. “We’d love to have some help but Adam and I are committed to getting it done regardless, it’s just going to take a bit longer,” Dan said. This is being balanced by Adam’s important role at Uniting Care Burnside, where he has since been nominated for Youth Carer of the Year. “He’s got a really important job, he’s doing a good thing, this is just his other dream,” Dan explained. Dan’s business has been expanding and since the beginning of November he has purchased another plane, an upgraded model of his existing cub, which allows further learning beyond the original. The aircraft was made by and

...for celebrating diversity By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY SIX months ago, Dubbo Photo News chose bullying as a social issue to address. We decided to focus on all types of bullying, from cyberbullying to workplace bullying, and have talked to organisations and individuals in the community, plus explored online hubs where support can be found. Nicolas Steepe from headspace, a well-known spokesperson in Dubbo advocating for inclusion and tolerance of diversity, was featured on the cover of our Stand Up campaign launch edition on June 4, 2015. headspace, and Interrelate area manager (Central West) Anne Heath, have both featured prominently throughout the campaign for the services they provide for individuals or families reeling from the after effects of bullying. Midway through the campaign one brave family stepped forward to talk about issues they had experienced at the hands of a bully and from an institution they felt did not take responsibility for the protection of their daughter. Brianna Whitehead is that victim of school bullying but under the guidance of her artist mother is turning her experiences into her own artworks,

including anime comics about bullying, which Dubbo Photo News also featured during 2015. Many thought leaders and experts in this field were consulted by Dubbo Photo News in search of strategies that individuals, organisations, schools and families can use to combat bullying in their own lives. We have had the pleasure of interviewing Kids Helpline general manager Wendy Protheroe; the co-director of the Citizenship and Wellbeing Research Group, from the Research in Education Centre at the University of South Australia, Dr Barbara Spears; ReachOut.com CEO Jono Nicholas, CEO of Bully Zero Australia Foundation Oscar Yildiz, anti-bullying campaigner and author Julia Weber, and Community legal education solicitor at the Children’s Legal Service Legal Aid NSW, Julianne Elliott, plus more.
The Macquarie Regional Library took us on tour of the many titles they have on their shelves which deal with identifying bullying, managing bullies and how to be a bystander. The bystander plays a crucial role in the bullying scenario and this has been frequently discussed during the campaign. Dubbo Buslines joined the conversation, revealing their experiences and those of their passengers who are victims of bullying. The bus drivers we spoke to told us that those experiences are unique to their specific environment, and that there is a definite need for increased support and reform. The extremes of bullying include violence against women and children – sadly, reports of physical and sexually abuse against both are all too prevalent. To help raise awareness of these forms of bullying, the Stand Up campaign has acknowledged both White Ribbon and Blue Knot Days. What revealed itself to be one of Australia’s most challenging forms of bullying is cyberbullying. Throughout the campaign, Dubbo Photo News has investigated types of cyberbullying, such as trolling, and featured expert online hubs for youth and parents to access when they feel they have a problem. Most recently, the Dubbo
School holiday anti-bullying tips Don’t go it alone these holidays if you think someone you care about is, or you are, being bullied. There is legislation to protect you, and there are many organisations you can reach out to as your first step to making the bullying stop. Photo News’ campaign was acknowledged by the newly created Office of the eSafety Commissioner for its work to promote the safe use of the Internet and how youth and parents can engage to protect themselves and their children. This is an exciting development for Dubbo Photo News and we will continue to explore the issue further and join forces with the eSafety Commissioner for National Safer Internet Day on February 9, to help bring the message home that online behaviours need close monitoring and that parents and teachers can take steps to guide children toward safe Internet use.

Beau’s emotional return BEAU ROBINSON, the “young kid with no fear and an overabundance of enthusiasm, reignited his rugby career with the Queensland Reds Super 15 team. The flying flanker overcame injury and a drop in form to fight his way back to the top. It was a typically gutsy performance by the former test flanker from Dubbo. Beau came home for a short stint following the Super 15 season and the National Rugby Cup campaign with the Country Eagles. It was a heart-warming moment for parents Larry and Chris, especially as Beau and partner Ewelina brought a special gift with them – son Tanami! Beau and his little family are spending this Christmas in snow-covered Europe where the Roos and Rhinos junior is playing with European Cup leaders London Barbarians. Proud parents Chris and Larry Robinson are pictured with Beau and partner Ewelina. Shortly after this photo was taken, baby Tanami came into the world. The group also included blokes who still live in Dubbo including Rick O’Dea, Mick “Eagle O’Neill, Andrew Hamblin, Col Parkes, Paul Madden and Peter Orbell. Players paid tribute to the late David “Nana Grant, Jimmy Piffero (who replaced Musgrave after 10 minutes of the fiery grand final) and “Acker Barnes. Bustling winger Rob Pedrycz was the only player missing from an event that celebrated a famous day in rugby league in our city.

Sherro’s real present came earlier in July when Macca and his crew (see story above) came home for the 1975 Grand Final reunion. Sherro lives for rugby league and Dubbo CYMS. Along with John “Crackles Meredith he is probably the only “original remaining and his love for the club and the code is just as strong as when he strutted his stuff with the Greens in 1947. You will not meet a more humble man than Ronny Sheridan but his deeds behind the scenes are much appreciated. There are hundreds of young men and their families in this city who are grateful for the kindness and generosity of the little man with the warm smile. Ronny’s never seen it better!

Dubbo Photo News December 31, 2015-January 6, 2016 LOOKING BACK ON 2015
The best of Finding 40 By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY BRAS, wigs, cupcakes and cricket stumps have all graced the Dubbo Photo News “Finding 40” campaign since its launch just four months ago, on September 10. In our attempt to spread the message passed to us from BreastScreen NSW, which says there are 40 women aged between 50 and 74 who have breast cancer right now but don’t know it. Their chances of survival fade every day without early detection – which can start with a free breast screen. It’s a serious issue, which the community takes to heart, and within this column we have met many supporters, survivors and health professionals all doing their bit to help educate, counsel and treat this devastating disease. Gillian Farlow, health promotion officer at BreastScreen NSW Greater Western, and Donna Falconer, a survivor and founder Pink Angels, kicked off the campaign at the Rotunda with the invitation to Bring ‘em & Sling ‘em – bras that is – into the trees. The act was not only to raise awareness but to celebrate Dubbo’s unique advantage of having a BreastScreen NSW clinic permanently located here. Through this weekly column our readers have met survivors Kym Hobson and Stacey Exner; followed Hugh Bateman on his
YOUR STARS 6 6 6 ARIES: You’re not able to just twiddle your thumbs during the festivities. Even if you’re not the host, you get actively involved, perhaps by preparing or serving the food. TAURUS: You’re the centre of attention. You’re very talkative and your sarcasm makes people laugh. You may even be applauded at times. GEMINI: You spend the week with family. You devote all your time to your children or your elderly parents. You experience a wonderful strengthening of family bonds. CANCER: You have plenty to say for yourself and you take the lead to help make everything go smoothly. You’re absolutely right, even if you lack tact.
Pink Tractor; learnt about the Dubbo Wig Library, the fantastic efforts of Dragon’s Abreast and much more. We’ve met breast care nurses Margie Collins and Vanessa Hyland, and celebrated the donation of a $16,000 L-Dex machine from Pink Angels to the Breast Care Nurse Program. The high school’s Pink Day, BreastScreen’s Outstanding Organisation category win at Women Out West, and their 20th birthday milestone have also been included as part of our ongoing coverage and support for the Finding 40 awareness campaign. South Primary School’s reg-
istration for next year’s Pink Stumps Day, a McGrath Foundation fundraiser and the exciting news that, in their 10th year, the Foundation has reached a goal of supporting 110 breast care nurses across Australia were also featured.
LEO: You have energy to spare. The festivities that you’re responsible for are sure to be spectacular despite a limited budget. Your ideas and your determination are amazing. VIRGO: Lots of action is in store for you. You’re quite surprised at all the initiative you demonstrate. People follow you blindly, even when you’re being silly. LIBRA: A little meditation is required. You spend some time reviewing the year, including the high and low points. You should take stock of your life before making any resolutions. SCORPIO: You’re in charge of an event that brings together a lot of friends and loved ones. You may achieve something that will be remembered for a long time to come.
SAGITTARIUS: You have a lot of cleaning up to do. You’re a great host and you may organise a lavish event for your family that is a huge success in every way. CAPRICORN: If you buy lottery tickets with family members, you may win the means to finish the holidays by travelling together. Lots of fun is on the horizon at the very least. AQUARIUS: Someone may reveal a family secret. You’re particularly sensitive and you may give a wonderful speech that moves a lot of people. PISCES: You’re a fairly sensitive person, so perhaps it would be wise to stay away from family conflicts as much as possible, especially if they don’t concern you. The luckiest signs this week: Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn.
Book your free mammogram today A mammogram for women aged 50-74 every two years is recommended. Bookings are free at BreastScreen NSW, in the cottage next to the Dubbo Base Hospital main car park on McGuinn Drive. Phone 132050.
IT’S A RECORD! Santa would have had his work cut out for him if he’d tried to fill this record-breaking stocking! In the USA, yarn company Caron entered into the Christmas spirit by overseeing the creation of a major cooperative knitting effort – all for charity – setting a new Guinness World Record for the Largest knit/ crochet stocking. It measured 712.54 square metres! The stocking was created from over 1200 knitted and crocheted blankets.
We are thinking of you. The New Year period is a time for family and friends to get together but if you’re one of the families we’ve served this year we understand that your loss can bring a feeling of loneliness and despair. But we’d like you to know that you’re still in our thoughts and that you can call on us for a shoulder to lean on or just to hear a voice that cares.

31 December
Dubbo City Council is again urging residents to be mindful that weirs kill, and it is a perfect time to remember that just because we are not on the coast, doesn’t mean we can’t cool off out west.

Dubbo has plenty of places to get wet and escape the heat away from the inherent dangers of the weir.

Poolwerx staff and customers are Star Wars crazy! THE THUMBS
Contributed by POOLWERX DUBBO

Thumbs up to the very kind lady who found my purse in Aldi. When seeing me worried she asked if I had lost something and informed me she had handed it in. From a very grateful old lady, my heartfelt thanks. Honesty is still alive.
Thumbs down to a local mechanic ' for their disorganisation when servicing cars. “First in actually meant last car to be serviced,” was the experience of one DPN reader. Thumbs up to the lady who found & my handbag in the Orana Mall car park and handed it in to Big W on Saturday. I am very grateful to you.
EVERYONE at Poolwerx is absolutely Star Wars crazy (except Darren, who hasn’t seen any of the movies) so when the Cox family saw we had Star Wars inflatables in stock, they offered to dress up in costume to help us promote them with a Star Wars Day. We jumped at the chance to have Darth Vader and friends visit our store. On Saturday, December 5, hundreds of people – and a few pets – turned out to get their photo taken with the characters. One girl even had her hair in Princess Leia buns!
Thumbs down to the “lady” who ' bashed another woman over a man at a local pub on the weekend. Thumbs up to the organisers of & the New Year’s Eve Fireworks for their tireless efforts in raising funds for the charity Macquarie Homestay. Thumbs up to Colin and Sherie for & their extraordinary Christmas lights every year. They also organise a collection of toys to donate to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. Thumbs down to the business own' er who scared a young child causing her to run onto the road and nearly get run over. Shame on you. Thumbs up to West Dubbo Rotary & for their Christmas Carols and the raffle that raised funds for local charities.
&
Thumbs up to Rotary Club of Dubbo and Dubbo Macquarie Rotary for their tireless efforts in manning the food van collecting much needed funds for charity throughout the year. Thumbs up to Regency Jewellers at & Orana Mall for their wonderful customer service. They’re always so helpful and the staff are a delight to deal with. Thumbs up to the Best Friends & Pawever team who have been promoting the adoption of dogs at Petbarn. Thumbs up to Totally Music Dubbo & and the Old Bank Music Shop for the support of the local music scene. Thumbs up to Dubbo City Council & for all their efforts in expanding our choices for air travel. Because of this, Dubbo is much more accessible and in turn we will reap the benefits in years to come. Send in your Thumbs up or , Thumbs Down via email to photos@ dubbophotonews.com.au, mail to 89 Wingewarra Street Dubbo NSW 2830, phone 6885 4433 or fax 6885 4434.
