CHILDREN of the Dubbo electorate showcased their creativity for this year’s Christmas card design competition.
Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders saw more than 450 entries for this year’s competition.
Dubbo’s St Mary’s Primary School student Lilly Butler was the winner, with her drawing of a family enjoying Christmas lunch on a farm, while classmate Chelsea Brook received second place with an image of a bogged tractor.
Mudgee Public School’s Maggie Blackman received third place with her picture of adults at Christmas lunch.
“Christmas can look very different from family to family, but it was wonderful to get an insight into what makes Christmas so special for children right across the electorate,” Mr Saunders said.
Lilly’s Christmas card design have started arriving in mailboxes across the Dubbo electorate.
THE Dubbo Ballet Studio will be holding their end of year production of ‘Elysium’ at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre on Saturday, December 10, at 2pm and 7pm.
Ballet student Spencer Bloomfield said the production portrays the stories of Greek mythology focusing on Greek Gods, Goddesses, and creatures, including Aphrodite, Apollo, and Medusa.
Principal Anna Bloomfield said she has always had an interest in Greek mythology and knew the students would enjoy the concepts behind the choreography, production, and costuming.
“I’ve always wanted to do a show like this, but I needed to wait for the right time and the right kids to put it on,” Ms Bloomfield told Dubbo Photo News
“This is going to be a great show because we have lots of special effects, production, costuming – we’re expecting a magnificent show.

“Greek mythology has some beautiful stories and some beautiful aesthetics, so it’ll look really great on stage.”
Ms Bloomfield said the students have had two months to practice for the show.
“The older students dance six days a week – they’re really committed to it,” she said.
“Performances and opportunities like this really propel them into their training.
“They have a goal to help them achieve their education and talent with dance.”
She said the two-month deadline is an important part of their
learning.
“We’re really excited for the community to support us and to see what is in their own backyards,” Ms Bloomfield said.
“We have a lovely following but there will be a lot of people outside that circle who would really enjoy the show and see what is happening with talent and local art.”

AUSTRALIAN bush author and illustrator Catherine Beach has recently published three children’s books focusing on the importance of friendship and healthy relationships.
Studying print making at TAFE last year, Mrs Beach was required to produce an artist book of her body of work and was inspired to make her own collection of Books for Little Bandits.
Mrs Beach designed custom accessories for brides before Covid and focused on her passion of art and storytelling.
“We we’re doing print making at TAFE and I ducked off with a friend for a week to paint with her and a group of other artists,” Mrs Beach told Dubbo Photo News
“I ended up sitting beside this lovely woman from Sydney and she mentioned to me that she loved print making and was very supportive.
“Her nickname was Dotty, and my first book was about adventures
Mrs Beach combined arts of painting and print making to explore various techniques in her books.
“As for the storytelling – I talk too much anyway,” she said.
“I wanted to write for little kids but make the stories enjoyable for whoever is reading them.
“I really love them, I should be sick of them because I’ve been working on them for so long, but I they’re a part of me.”
Her three current books are centred around the friendship of animals, but she mentioned her next book will focus on a farmer discovering dinosaurs.
“I want to publish a book that will help improve boys’ education, but it has to be about topics they are interested in and want to learn about,” she said.
“I have already done the drawings, so I need to put it together now.”
Mrs Beach is enjoying her growing collection of children’s books and hopes to create more in the future.
The three books are available in the Book Connection.

CEO Susannah Le Bron commented that the program provides an important platform to ensure young people are heard.
“Each year I am amazed by the immense passion, intelligence, and insight participants bring to Youth Parliament as they speak on issues that are important to them,” Ms Le Bron said.
The selected youth leaders will receive training, education, and experience with an opportunity for community engagement and teamwork.

A LOVED and needed Dubbo business will change ownership in the coming weeks after two successful decades in the mobile aid industry.
Orana Disability Sales and Service owner Ken Hall has sold the business to Connecting Community Services to continue his leg-
acy in what was Dubbo’s first mobile aid service.
Mr Hall is looking forward to retiring with holidays to Alaska and Canada booked in September next year.
“I’m excited to travel and retire,” Mr Hall told Dubbo Photo News
Connecting Community Services CEO Michelle Redden is ex-
cited to add a new element to the service.
“It’s a well established business that has been in Dubbo for a long time and that was owned by some good people,” Ms Redden said.
Ms Redden said the service will commence a rebrand but will keep the services and products the same.
“We’ll continue to offer the great services that the business has been offering,” Ms Redden said.
She said their services have an outreach to patients from here to Broken Hill.
The handover of the business will be on Friday, December 16, with Ken and Jason Hall providing assistance when necessary.

THE First Home Buyer Choice calculator will give Dubbo first home buyers an option between their upfront stamp duty or a small annual fee.
Buyers will be able to calculate the number of years they expect to own the property and receive an estimate of the total amount they can expect to pay over the period in present value dollars.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said the advanced calculator would help first home buyers make an informed decision.
“We know that 50 per cent of owner-occupiers sell within 10.5 years,” Mr Perrottet said.
“This new advanced calculator will show how they may benefit from paying an annual fee.
This entertaining Storytime was a chance for children and caregivers to connect and have fun in the water while enjoying a splash, story, songs and rhymes.
Families were also invited to join the library’s new 1000 Books Before School program, a free early literacy program for children aged 0-5 that encourages a love of books and builds early literacy skills.
“This is all about giving people choice and helping families get the keys to their own home sooner by removing upfront costs and potentially reducing overall tax.”
The choice will take effect from January 16 for purchases under $1.5 million but any eligible first home buyer who bought from the time the legislation was enacted on November 11 can pay the annual fee and receive a refund of stamp duty paid.

The new exhibit will be part of a $20 million investment from the Regional Tourism Activation Fund.
Zoo director Steve Hinks said it’s an exciting time for the wider region.
“This project is an absolute game changer for Taronga Western Plains Zoo and tourism in Central Western NSW. It will firmly cement Dubbo as the number one family holiday destination in Australia,” Mr Hinks said.
Dubbo mayor Mathew Dickerson was equally enthusiastic.
“The exciting vision of this project aligns with Council’s aim for the Dubbo Region to be the number one inland tourism destination in NSW, and increase the 1.65 million people that visit the Dubbo Region annual-
ly,” Cr Dickerson said.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the construction will include 20 premium eco-cabins and a new two-story café, restaurant and function centre complete with a pool and playground.
Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders also said the investment will benefit the entire Central West region.
“Taronga Western Plains Zoo is already home to award-winning accommodation and visitor experiences, and this funding will build on that with the Serengeti Visitor Experience,” Mr Saunders said
“We know visitors will also take in our region’s other attractions, grab a bite to eat at our restaurants and cafes, pop into local businesses and travel further afield to nearby towns and villages," he added.
DUBBO College South has received $10,000 from the state government to aid in overcoming mental health challenges.
The grant will deliver a range of initiatives, including Youth Mental Health First Aid training for parents and teachers, bullying prevention and reduction, and alcohol and drug harm minimisation sessions, and an annual wellbeing day.
Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders said the school has seen an increase in the number of students struggling with social, emotional, and mental health issues.
“Our region’s young people have been through a lot in recent years, from drought to COVID-19 and now floods, and initiatives like this are really crucial to help them recover,” Mr Saunders said.
DUBBO’S pedestrian bridges are finally reopened after the flooding caused severe damage.
Dubbo Regional Council reopened the Yabang Gee Bridge on Friday, December 2, and the Shibble Bridge on Tuesday, Decem-

Council crews have also removed silt from the cycleway under the Serisier Bridge and the granite path at Sandy Beach.
The Tamworth Street footbridge had been closed due to flooding.

Food Mandala treats your sense of a culinary splurge with a carefully designed menu that takes you on a fascinating voyage through Nepalese cuisines, communities, and regions.

Nepal, loved the foo and misse the food delicacies. Mean while, Dubbo
has developed as a multicultural city with the Nepalese diaspora spiking in numbers. The whirlpool of introducing Nepalese Food to Dubbo, the demand for a new taste in the town and the passion for the cooking business engrossed Arjun Dangol (AJ), Prabhanand Chaudhary and Mr Karki to come up with Nepali Food Mandala.
What do we Serve?

DUBBO mums and dads are concerned about their children’s water safety, according to a recent survey which found more than half of Australian parents are unsure if their child could get themselves to safety in a water emergency.
The SWIMSAFER Report commissioned by Swim Australia revealed 45 per cent of parents had no plans to enrol their children in swimming lessons.
Swim Australia chief executive officer Brendon Ward said swimming lessons should be a priority before learning how to play sports as it could help save their life.
“Water safety is a skill for life and that’s why it’s critical we get kids back in the water to minimise the potential long-term effects of missed swimming lessons,” Mr Ward said.
DUBBO residents should be made aware that last week was National Skin Cancer Week, so this is a reminder to make a skin check appointment.
President of Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) Megan Belot said getting a regular skin check is vital as Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.
VOLUNTEER Rescue Association (VRA) commissioner Mark Gibson has officially retired after his 50-year legacy serving for the Dubbo community.
Mr Gibson will still resume work on upcoming projects and nonoperational assistance within the community.
Throughout his five decades of service, with the past 10 being commissioner, Gibson recalls his first job to his last.
“The part that is important is the relief you give to the family of those who are injured, a person you are searching for, or a body you have found,” Mr Gibson said.
“It doesn’t matter if they’re deceased or alive, it’s the relief for the family.”
Mr Gibson said a family from Cronulla left a local store on the Easter weekend and by the time they got to the other side of the road, the mother and father were deceased.
“The little girl and boy were in the back but when I held the boy he died in my arms – that is something that takes a while to get over,” he said.
Mr Gibson expressed there was never a moment where he questioned his profession.
“I wouldn’t change anything over the past 50 years,” Mr Gibson said.
“It’s nice to receive recognition for the work you put in.
“It’s in my blood and it will never change, it’s with me until I die.
“The VRA now have a fantastic relationship with the Rural Fire
Service and that relationship will move forward.”
Commissioner of Resilience NSW Shane Fitzsimmons thanked Mark for his contribution and outstanding leadership he brought to the VRA over the past five decades.
“The VRA reinforces to us all that professionalism isn’t about getting paid for what you do, it’s about what you do and how you do it,” Mr Fitzsimmons said.
“If volunteers are equipped properly, if they’re trained properly, and if they’re led professionally, their services are second to none and that’s what we’re seeing with the VRA and the way they partner with their sister organisations.”
Mr Fitzsimmonds said Gibson incorporated his knowledge on volunteerism and the inti-
mate understanding of the community to reinvent a successful organisation.
Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience Steph Cooke recognised the monuments and awards Gibson has received throughout his services.
Mr Gibson has received an honorary life membership for the Dubbo VRA Squad, an honorary life membership of NSW VRA Rescue Association, and Australian distinguished honours list for service to the community and an emergency service medal and was awarded a national emergency service medal for sustained service during the bushfire event in 2019 and 2020.
Mr Gibson is grateful for his experiences in the VRA and is looking forward toward his next chapter.
“Unfortunately, rates are even higher in regional, rural, and remote areas, and we know that older men are the least likely to protect themselves from the sun and are also less likely to make a skin check appointment with their doctor, often delaying their diagnosis,” Dr Belot said.
“Early diagnosis and action on skin cancer is essential.”
NEW medical education facilities are officially opened at the Dubbo campus of University of Sydney’s School of Rural Health to support growth in rural medical education.
The new teaching building, Marra-dha Ngrang meaning ‘hands-on place’ in Wiradjuri language features an anatomy teaching lab with A SECTRA virtual dissection table, six simulation suites to provide hospital-like training, a range of simulators and man-
nequins, and two studios for collaborative work.
The Dubbo campus now offers the entire four-year postgraduate program in addition to the one and two-year placements it has supported for almost two decades.
Dean of Sydney Medical School professor Cheryl Jones understands the importance of providing medical training in regional and rural areas.
“Some people can’t choose to come to Sydney or wish to train on Country, so this is an addition to the training that
we already have in place,” Ms Jones said.
“We know that we don’t have enough health practitioners and doctors in rural areas such as Dubbo so this will address some of the issues in the rural and regional workforce.”
The campus are prioritising students who have Indigenous, or rural and regional backgrounds, particularly in Western NSW.
“We had an incredible partnership with the Wiradjuri community in not only devel-
oping the program so there is a strong commitment of our Wiradjuri Elders, Aunty Pat Doolan and Lewis Burns, but they’ve also contributed to the artwork here,” she said.
Wiradjuri Artwork Competition winner Cara Shields showcases her landscape inspired artwork in the facility.
The facility was funded by the Australian Government under the Murray-Darling Medical Schools Network combined with a philanthropic gift to the University of Sydney.

ST JOHN’S COLLEGE will gain an associate teacher through a new partnership with Catholic Education Diocese of Bathurst and Teach for Australia (TFA) to provide further assistance to the current teacher shortage in the Central West.
Mathematics teacher associate Luke Doyle will commence his role next year along with four other associates in Wellington, Orange and Lithgow.
The associates will complete TFA’s two-year Leadership Development Program and will receive ongoing coaching and mentoring to accelerate professional development while finishing a Master of Teaching Degree with Australian Catholic University.
Mr Doyle’s passion for teaching began when he taught students on a remote island in Vanuatu for six months.
“It was very challenging, there wasn’t electricity or running water, so it was very eye-opening, but I learnt a lot about cultural diversity,” Mr Doyle told Dubbo Photo News
“I really have to focus on building relationships with the students, that’s probably one of the most important things I
can do.
“I’m an example of someone who is from Melbourne moving out to the country to support the local community.”
Principal Nicole Morton is looking forward to having Luke commence his role as the students can experience authentic learning opportunities brought by STEM.
“Students can learn and understand the progression of maths beyond their school years,” Ms Morton said.
Ms Morton said the school has experienced teacher shortages throughout the year, so it is exciting to have new faces welcomed in the community.
Schools Catholic Education Diocese of Bathurst executive director Christina Trimble said the partnership with TFA focuses on the importance of having quality education in regional and rural NSW.
“I come from Sydney and am in my third year of living in Bathurst and I love it – it’s my home,” Ms Trimble said.
“It’s important we get young teachers like associates or prac teachers coming into our schools, and what we hope to see is that they fall in love with the community and want to stay and be a part of it.”

Because the Dubbo Region is the best place to build your career
WHEN Rabobank associate credit analyst Chloe Blatchford made the move from Moree to Dubbo, she saw it as an opportunity to expand her career.
Chloe’s role consists of writing credit papers assessing financial figures and analysing clients’ requests to help them achieve their goals, as well as writing annual reviews.
Chloe said her previous position as a cadet accountant assisted her with her current role as it also focused on report-based writing and interpreting financial data.
“Moving here, I learnt how different agricultural businesses operate and how significantly the seasonal conditions have impacted our clients,” Chloe
told Dubbo Photo News
“I’ve learnt a lot about the ag sector and how to use different strategies when assessing clients’ requests for finance.”
Chloe used the recent NSW flooding as an example of the importance of acting in the best interest of the clients.
Chloe studied at the University of England in agriculture and business and majored in accounting – she has one subject left to complete in her degree.
She gravitated towards the accounting industry as a few of her family members are accountants, so she grew familiar with the sector.
“Accounting is such a broad career path so I could really do a lot with it in the future,” she said.
Chloe was excited for the
move as she got the opportunity to be geographically closer to her friends in the Central West.
“It made more sense as a young person for both my career and social life to move to Dubbo,” she said.
“I already had family friends living here, so I was pretty comfortable moving down (from Moree).
“The transition has been great, there’s a vibrant crowd of young professionals in the town.
“Rabobank Dubbo also has a really great work environment and quite a young team, so I’ve made great friends through work.
“There were five of us hired at once in the credit analyst space, so it’s been really good.”

THE importance of meaning and self-expression was being reflected through art at a special TAFE student art exhibition opened on Friday, November 25.
Art teacher Jude Crawford encouraged her ten students to project their ideas through different mediums, including painting, drawing and ceramics.
“Creating art is quite a courageous experience so we need to make sure that we are in a safe space,” Ms Crawford told Dubbo Photo News
“They are bearing their souls and it needs to be a safe space to be able to do that.
“The students are very encouraging of each other and the ideas they present.”
Student Anna Marshall showcased multiple self-portraits that reflected her throughout her life.
Ms Marshall’s creativity and passion for art began when she was drawing in primary school.
ULTRA Violet Radiation (UV) over Dubbo this week, until Wednesday, December 14, is rated extreme, and the government had warned sun seekers are in danger of overexposure to UV radiation from the sun.
Speaking on the subject recently, Minister for Regional Health Bronnie Taylor said melanoma is the most common cancer among young Australians and the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in all Australians.
“This should be a real reminder to our regional communities, if you step outside, whether it’s at a beach or a walk to the shops or along the river, apply sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses, cover up and seek shade,” Mrs Taylor said.
Ninety-five per cent of melanoma and 99 per cent of non-melanoma skin cancers are caused by overexposure to UV radiation from the sun and can be prevented with proper sun protection. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. UV ratings are updated daily, between 1 which is low and 11+ which is extreme and dangerous to skin.
“I would draw eight copies of what we were drawing because I wanted it to be good,” she said.
Throughout high school and her journey with mental illness, Ms Marshall said she gravitated towards art as it helped with her self-expression.
“Fast forward a few years, I did a lot of creativity work with children over many years but felt as

WELLINGTON Arts’ Lisa Thomas and Therese Woldhuis are holding an exhibition of collective works called ‘Eyes on Us’ featuring painting and mosaic work. The exhibition will be held
ber 9, at 6pm.
Ms Thomas said she is delighted to collaborate with Woldhuis for the exhibition as she obtains decades of painting knowledge behind her.
“I’ve had a few exhibitions in Wagga Wagga while I was at uni but this would be my first one since then,” Ms Thomas told Dubbo Photo News
“I’m dabbling in mosaics,
wire, and sculpture.”
Ms Thomas said the inspiration behind the name was because the two artists featured a lot of eyes in their collection.
“We didn’t even realise it at the time,” she said.
The artists have been working on the pieces for the past eight months for the exhibition.
“We have a big selection of
artwork, Therese has about 30, and I have 60 of different sizes, from small stones to detailed wall hangings,” Ms Thomas said.
“I’m very excited for the exhibition, of course there is a bit of hesitation because I like it but I’m not sure if someone else might.”
Ms Thomas said she is confident in the exhibition and hopes to draw a crowd.

AND that’s a warp for season 2022 for Dubbo Classic Cars and Coffee.
For the first time since April, we were back home at Victoria Park and the purple reign of
flowering jacarandas made for a royal finish to a year of some of the craziest weather that we have had locally for some time. Congratulations to all involved. See you in February 2023!

BLACK Adam is the latest film from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) series set in ancient Kahndaq where Black Adam was imprisoned.
After nearly 5000 years, Black Adam is free and a local legend.
The film has been in production since 2007 due to Dwayne Johnson starring in other films before this one. It was an entertaining film, but it isn’t a masterpiece –it’s got a few issues, but despite its flaws, it was almost worth the hype.
Dwayne Johnson embodied the character of Black Adam – his performance was great. He’s
bulked up to play the character. I always looked forward to seeing comic books in live action films, and I felt satisfied for the whole film.
The film was a bit overwhelming at times. I have had my fair share of disappointments of DC films, and I have little hope for the Flash and Ezra Miller.
The film is nowhere near as good as other films like Batman or Sonic 2, but it is a watch for those who want to see Dwayne Johnson bring destruction, and I’m giving this one an 8/10.

Thumbs Up to Thumbs Up to Mel and Anthony at Missy’s Mowing who do a great job, and do the job as you ask them, and not as they want to do it. It takes you longer to tell them what you want then they can get it done. Great people.

Thumbs Up to Les Picton and staff from Spanline, I recently had a leak in my sunroom. They came on time and nothing was too much trouble, they were very respectful when coming into my home. Good old fashion service from a local business. You don’t get too many people that are so helpful anymore.

IT was certainly a great day for Dubbo residents Barry Brebner and Pauline Kuhner recently as the Minister for Seniors and Minister for Multiculturalism, the Hon Mark Coure, launched the book “Seniors Stories Volume 8” at Parliament House in Sydney which included stories by them both.
In launching the book, Minister Coure advised that Seniors Stories Volume 8 is just one way of recognising and valuing the experi-
ences of NSW seniors and building connections between the young and old and encouraging older people to stay active, healthy and socially connected.
The book will be available at all NSW libraries as well as online. An Audio Book will also be available.
Dubbo author and Rotarian Barry Brebner wrote his story
“Achieve Your Dream with Diversity” about the dream many people have about wanting to work
employment is available in all Australian States, especially for seniors.
Pauline Kuhner’s story “Remembering Lily” was a true story on the life of Doctor Lily Holt-Mac-
Crimmon who was an inspirational Australian with a special connection to Mendooran. After many years living in the Solomon Islands, the family moved to Mendooran where Dr Lily took over the medical practice of Dr Newbury Brown in 1931. Dr Lily served the local community until her death in 1935. Pauline is currently conducting extensive research on this amazing woman, hoping to publish a book in the future.
This published book “Seniors Stories Volume 8” includes a message from the Premier Dominic Perrottet MP as well as a message from the Minister for Seniors Mark Coure.
The MC for the day was Australian performer, writer and comedian Jean Kittson, with special guest, NSW Senior of the Year 2022 Abla Kadous.
Certainly a day to remember for these two Dubbo writers.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.
Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

Do bears appreciate beauty like us humans? Some wildlife experts think so, as there have been many sightings of the animals sitting at scenic points and staring out at vistas of mountains, rivers, etc. They appear to have no other purpose there than enjoying the view!
Humans are more likely to die at around 11am than any other time of day.
Who needs Harry Potter? Not the city of Christchurch in New Zealand. Until 2021, the city paid

Need a quick iron job but don’t have the time to iron? Spray a clean kitchen towel with a mixture of water and a little fabric softener until damp. Pop it in the dryer with the item that’s wrinkled. It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to get all the wrinkles out and smell great to boot!
While we’re on ironing tips, here’s a great one from contributor T.C.: “If you have mineral deposits on your iron, use a toothbrush and
toothpaste (mild abrasive) to polish them off your iron’s face. Rinse with water, and next time, use distilled water for steaming.”
“When driving a nail into a plaster wall, first put down a piece of tape at the spot where you will insert the nail. Tap the nail in right through the tape, then pull it away to discard. It often will keep the surrounding plaster from crumbling at the site of the nail.” – W.L.
When your cabinet door magnet locks are too strong, try putting a piece of tape over the magnet. It decreases the strength of the magnet.
If you paint your radiators, make sure that the paint you use is intended to be heat-resistant. To get the best finish, paint while the radiator is warm.

IT started when a retired professional footballer came across a former teammate living out his life, unknown and forgotten, in a nursing home.
Twenty years later and recognising the more-inclusive nature of society, the rugby league grassroots charitable foundation “Men of League” has just changed its name to “Family of League”.
Almost self-deprecatingly referring to itself as “The Greatest Game of All”, rugby league is and remains very much a working peoples’ sport, with some former players, often with only moderate education and postgame career prospects, sometimes falling on hard times.
Since it was first established by rugby league greats Ron Coote, Jim Hall and Max Brown in 2002, this unique sporting charity has supported the rugby league family in times of hardship or crisis, providing over $10 million of financial support and 10,000 hours of volunteer service.
“We are enormously proud of our heritage and legacy, and recognised the need to evolve to continue that legacy into the future,” said Helen Wood Grant, Chair of Family of League.
“Our new name more accurately reflects and represents what we have grown to be, who we now are, and the invaluable work our organisation, members and volunteers do to care for those in need in the family of league,” she added.
Just as the sport has expanded with women’s tag, touch and professional players now making up a large proportion of the game’s supporters, so has the group expanded its services, she said.
“While Men of League was the perfect name for our charity in 2002, when male ex-players were the focus of our assistance,
‘Family of League’ perfectly describes the wider group we help now. Over the past two decades our volunteers have increasingly identified and helped women and children in need in our rugby league family, as well as men.”
Family of League’s network of more than 6500 members and volunteers, and 39 dedi-
cated committees across NSW, Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria, come together for the game, and for each other, she added.
In other football news, Dubbo has missed out in the 2023 NRL draw after the South Sydney Rabbitohs announced they would not return to our region next year, despite subsidies in
the hundreds of thousands for them to play here.
One of the NRL’s most famous teams based out of Redfern, “the Bunnies” played in Dubbo in 2021 and 2022, but could not replicate their top-of-the-table form, being smashed by Penrith in 2021 and beaten easily by the Canberra Raiders in 2022.
DUBBO Ducks’ quest for a Christmas treat resulted in mass time breaks on Sunday.
“Well, there were some hot birds in the pool with time breaks galore by the flock as everyone was flapping and splashing trying to snare a luscious leg,” Judy Walsh told Dubbo Photo News Bill Greenwood and Josh Bird were first to feel the wrath of the timekeepers, wiped out by the table in the 25m Freestyle final. This allowed John Wherritt to claim the blue ribbon, however as he’d already pocketed one for the day, fourth placed Jack Allen was left with the goods.
The final of the 2x25 Breaststroke also saw a flurry of action by the ham chasers. Josh Bird and Jack Allen, Peter Allen and Jacob Pearce and Henry Willcockson and Rob Dickerson all fluttered too hard and had the red line through their names.
What happened next could not have been predicted! Tthe intrepid traveller, Ducks’ captain Ned Sparkes, who finally returned to his flock after a lengthy sojourn across the country, snaffled up the spoils with his old pal Judy Walsh!
There was lots of head-shaking and the usual ducks jibes, but Ned just smiled a schneeky Fox grin!
Mia Uebergang was unlucky when she broke in the final of the 25m leaving Jacob Pearce happy to have the win. Marg Ross touched first in what was a very close final of the 25m Freestyle ahead of Mia Uebergang, Peter Allen, Mark Prentice and Nicole Johnstone.
Congratulations to Roger Mackay who won the Comfort Inn Dubbo City Motel December Trophy on -0.03. The Dodger also added the November Pointscore, taking the 25m Freestyle and 53 points. He was two clear of Dubbo Day awardee Peter Hargreaves with Nicole Johnstone three points away in third place.
Nicole is wanting names of members who wish to join in the festivities on the last Sunday before Christmas.

IT was a big weekend for the region’s basketball players – Dubbo had a representation of 26 including players and staff attend a training weekend in Canberra. The 23 athletes from Dubbo are part of the 50-player WRAS Basketball squad which is a huge reflection of the talent we have here in Dubbo.
Cath Raidavatea has taken on the role of camp mum which is awesome. Cath comes with a lot of experience being mum to past Dubbo basketball players Jonah and Amelia. Amelia is now in America playing for Weber State as a freshman. Jonah is in Townsville on a rugby league scholarship with the Cowboys.
Chrystal Thompson has joined the WRAS coaching staff, bringing her own player experience and coaching as part of the indigenous player development. This is my second year as an assistant coach working under Adam Majoram who is an excellent head coach and mentor.

NO Santa at the Combo bowls Xmas party, instead the ‘Bowler of the Year’ will be presented with his/her rewards for an exceptional performance during 2022.
With 96 bowlers making up the Combo contingent, and an average of 34 each week, it proves the event is the best social bowls activity in Dubbo.
We celebrate every one of the bowlers who rolled on Sundy mornings. Everyone is a champion.
Mary, Steve and Col (Cottee) combined in a struggle against Helene, Rob and Bryan. Col verses Bryan was interesting, and Mary always enjoys getting her bowls if not in the zone, then close to the jack. Col’s side scored eight in the
first five; Bryan’s mob added the same in the other three. In the second half both scored on four ends. Mary, Steve and Col scored a couple of doubles, while Helene, Rob and Bryan scored a couple of triples – those extra two were decisive.
A little more intensity was evident when Leo, Julie and Chris (Crisante) were on a charge, scoring on six of the eight ends on Rink 10. A nice five shots on the second was a big plus as they bagged 11 overall. Cheryl, Al (Andriske) and Col (Dover) were not too worried about the lack of scoring ends, but two quads kept them in the race. Once again, the second half even as far as scoring ends goes.
The big difference was a 4 on end which had Col’s side within
3 shots of the lead, Leo, Julie and Chris were seemingly comfortable as they added a single to extend their lead to four on end 13. Cheryl, Al and Col kept plugging away. A single and a double got them within one but it was the big five on the last end that stole the show, C, A and C were happy with their four shot win, given they scored 20 shots and used only six ends!
Shirley, Frank and Pete (Sinclair) started with a flurry, taking eight on end two followed by a triple to lead by nine after just three. That was something! Ron (McCauley), Mel and Graham were stunned. Their tally for the first half was 8 shots, seven adrift. They weren’t finished scoring four on end 10, and another five through ends 13 and 14. It was not
enough. Shirley, Frank and Pete pulled out a five 5 on end 12 to extend their lead and by end 16, they coveted their lead of six to take the win eight ends each.
Ian Humphries, Doug and Gordon (Scott) having led Ian (becoming a seasoned swinger), John (Cole) and Ricky (See) 7-5 at the turn. Ricky struggled a bit during the second eight, and Doug and Gordon added a four and a three helping to maintain their lead all the way to the end.
Ron Morrison, Al Stratford and Paul G struggled against a red hot combo of Kenno, Pete (Ruzans) and Trish who opened with a four then a five and were up by 12 at the break. They continued in the same vein, adding a six on the 10th to score a 16 point win.
Sue (Armstrong), Doc and Mike (Twohill) recorded 4 shots on both ends two and three leaving Ray, Ruby and Col (Hume) at the gate. Their six shot lead was more than doubled with eight over the last four. Winners by 16
Chris (Strojny), Pete (Bennison) and Phil Knight started slowly against Vicki Hummel, back after a nice holiday, Ross and Karen. The first mob trailed throughout, although finished up a mere three away from a win.
Winners Sue Armstrong, Doc Livingston and Mike Twohill on a countback from Ken Whittaker, Pete Ruzans and Trish Gosper.
Sunday, December 18, will be the last of the sessions for 2022 with Combo to resume on January 6.
LAST Sunday, in sparkling weather, 63 primary students from schools across the western region, accompanied by over 60 parents and supporters, converged on Club Dubbo to play in the $6000 Western Region ‘Let’s Play Bowls’ Challenge.
21 teams from Years 5 and 6 (Stage 3) from as far away as Manildra and Parkes, as well as the local Dubbo area, were on the greens delighting the large crowd with their skills and demeanour.
Playing 2 x bowl triples, there was a 3-game round robin series in the morning, and this determined the top 8 teams for the afternoon shoot-out.
The eight teams that made it to the afternoon play-offs were: Dubbo Christian School ‘Donkeys’, Dubbo Christian School ‘3 Amigos’, St Pius X ‘Piranhas’, Dubbo South Public School ‘Wabbits’, Manildra No 1, Manildra No 2, Parkes Christian School ‘Powder Puff Girls’ and Parkes Christian School ‘Glory Bowlers’.
In the final, Manildra No 2 side outlasted the Parkes Christian School ‘Glory Bowlers’.
Manildra Public School won $4000 for their efforts and Parkes Christian School won $2000.
In a special draw, Dubbo Chris-
tian School won a ‘Jack Attack’ kit valued at over $300.
A perpetual trophy was presented to the winning school (Manildra), along with individual medals – Gold, Silver and Bronze. All prize-money that went to the winning schools will be used for educational purposes.
The big winner of the day, however, was lawn bowls. Lawn bowls is a highly skilled non-contact sport which promotes concentration and self-discipline.
Club Dubbo and Zone 4 Bowling Association are to be congratulated in sponsoring the $6000 event.
In addition, Club Dubbo provided a free barbecue lunch for all players, parents and volunteers.
As a follow-up, Club Dubbo is holding a special Information and Registration afternoon for prospective junior players at 4pm this Sunday, December 11.
Lawn bowls at Club Dubbo is a highly cost-effective sport for juniors. For just $10 annual membership, junior bowlers receive free lessons from accredited coaches, free club uniform (shirt, pants/short, jacket, cap), bowls supplied, club and state competitions, and the opportunity for Junior Scholarships.
All information can be obtained from Club Dubbo Bowls’ Coordinator, Anthony Brown, on 0403 401 567.
