Native to Australia’s Rottnest Island, the quokka is a very curious, cute, and cheerful marsupial found at Dubbo’s Taronga Western Plains Zoo. There are only a few thousand quokkas left in Australia, they are listed as vulnerable. Their predators are wild cats and foxes. Pictured is quokka keeper, Lou Todd feeding treats to these gorgeous little Aussies.

Thank you to all those who have had a hand in the production and distribution of this amazing newspaper. I have thoroughly enjoyed this positive, humorous, respectful and educational publication. I have encouraged many people within our Village to read and enjoy - you will not be disappointed.

– Ian

Congratulations on your pilot issue. I look forward to reading the first issue which I understand is due for publication in February. Best wishes for Seniors Happy Life during 2023.

– John Walker

Hello Bob and other members of the Seniors Happy Life team. I was interested to receive and read a copy of Seniors Happy Life, I found it quite impressive.  You were correct when you said on page 2, “I’ll bet you’ve never seen anything like it before!” Most of the general newspapers and magazines targeted at older Australians are essentially commercial advertising. It was clear from your introductory article on pages 2 and 3 that this is not the case with Seniors Happy Life. Thanks to you and your colleagues for the great amount of thought and effort that has gone into producing Seniors Happy Life. I wish you the greatest success in your endeavours.

Black Dog Ride 1 Dayer planned for March

THE Collie Hotel will the lunch stop on this year’s Black Dog Ride 1 Dayer, scheduled for Sunday, March 19.

A community lunch is being provided by Tradies in Sight and other organisations and it’s expected a number of our great health partners will be on hand with information booths, along with entertainment.

“We have chosen to concentrate on Rural Communities in recent years as our destination to try to inject something back into these local communities,” coordinator Wayne Amor said.

“We know they’ve been struggling with drought, loss of stock and all things that the prolonged dry weather has brought to the region – and more recently flooding and COVID.

“We hope our visits give hope to those

“We may also be joined by the Tamworth 1 Dayer crew as in previous years,” Mr Amor said.

The proposed route is to start at 10am from the iconic ANZAC Avenue in Victoria Park, Dubbo, turning left into Talbragar Street then Left into Macquarie Street.

The ride will then turn right onto the L.H. Ford Bridge and head west on Mitchell Highway towards Narromine.

They’ll then go through the Narromine main street and turn right at Warren Road for a visit to the Narromine Car Show at the Golf Club, before heading off from Narromine at about 11am for lunch, raffles and entertainment at Collie from around 12 noon.

insect world in closeup is always a source of fascination and a reminder to be grateful these critters aren't

The brave family of Quinn Wiatkowski are holding hope they could be back home by Easter, should all go to plan.

Four-year-old Quinn is currently undergoing intensive treatment in Sydney for high risk pre B-cell leukaemia and the family, which includes mum Sheridan, dad Jeremy, Quinn and younger sister Niamh, 2, have called Ronald McDonald House their “home away from home” for the last 10 months.

Generously sharing an honest update with the Dubbo Photo News, Mrs Waitkowski admitted there have been a lot of incredibly tough days.

“Quinn’s diagnosis has been hard on us, we may not openly show it; especially Jeremy, but it’s definitely tested us both, we are ok at the moment though,” she said.

“You’re continually pushed beyond what you think you can handle and when you emerge out the other side you wonder how you did it.”

“During Quinn’s first Protocol III she had an adverse reaction to the steroids, she had insomnia and actually developed psychosis, she was saying awful things, lashing out and would scream for hours, that was the worst two weeks of my life.”

Mrs Wiatkowski said the journey has been made more bearable with the support of Ronald McDonald house, and she finds strength in connecting with other families who are in a similar position.

“This journey would have been so much harder if we didn’t have their [Ronald McDonald] support, they have been incredible,” she said.

“From providing meals a few times a week, spoiling the girls with gifts, activities to help entertain and pass the time, tickets to events, and being able to stay

at the house has been invaluable to our family.

“What helps most is having other families to speak with that are able to relate to what we’re going through.

“As much as anyone tries to understand, unless you’ve been in a situation such as this with your own child it’s impossible to comprehend.”

The support from the Dubbo and Coonamble communities is something else the Waitkowski family are grateful for.

“We are overwhelmed and humbled by your support, truly we cannot express our gratitude enough,” Mrs Waitkowski said.

“Thank you for the financial help so we don’t have to struggle, for sharing in Quinn’s journey and for your love.”

In terms of treatment, Quinn will soon start her second interim maintenance therapy, before a third and final Protocol III.

Following that, Quinn will have her central line removed and go into long term maintenance which consists of oral chemotherapy, fortnightly blood tests and lumbar punctures every six weeks.

For anyone reading Quinn’s story and wondering how they can help this little girl, and other children fighting this horrendous disease, blood and monetary donations are the answer.

“Blood donation is the main thing that makes the biggest difference,” Mr Wiatkowski said.

“Quinn has had close to 40 blood transfusions throughout treatment so far, so we really advocate for this.”

“Her [Australian Red Cross Lifeblood] team, ‘Quinn’s Quest’, saved up to 387 lives last year and had 22 first time donors.”

“If you’re unable to donate, spreading awareness is just as important.”

There is also no specific government support for oncology families, so Mrs Waitkowski explained that donating to charities such as RedKite, Kids With Cancer Foundation and Country Hope means families can receive financial assistance while they face hardship.

“Little Wings is also a great charity to donate to as they provide sick children and their families, throughout Regional NSW, free ongoing ground and air transport - we’ve flown with them a couple of times and the service they provide is amazing.”

To keep up with Quinn’s

regular, detailed updates on how they are doing.

Mrs Wiatkowski said the page was initially started so Quinn could look back at her experi-

now morphed into a way to conlies as well as a platform to raise awareness for childhood cancer and blood donation.

Hot Summer Night

Rum and Raisin Ice-cream Cake

If you’re pondering the prospect of selling your property, one of the first questions many people ask is what will it cost? The following is a general guide to the costs involved in selling a property.

Agent’s fees or commissions

The agent you engage to sell your property charges for the service in the form of a commission or set fee. Commissions can vary depending on the agent you opt to work with, but a great agent will be upfront about the costs involved and the value they provide for that charge.

Conveyancing

Any property sale has legal implications, which is why it pays to engage a legal advisor or conveyancer. Again, their fees vary but their job is to guide you through the legal nuances of a property purchase or sale.

Property marketing

Method:

Step 1 1

premix

Add 400ml water and 4 eggs.

Blend on slow one minute Mix on Medium for 10 minutes.

Scale into two 20cm Spring form pan.

Bake 180 degrees set aside to cool

(Follow instructions on back of packet.)

Step 2 Meanwhile, combine raisins, spice, water and rum in a bowl.

Set aside

Step 3

Cut cake into 3 horizontally. Place one layer back into spring form pan which is lined with a double layer of plastic long enough for ends to hang over sides

Step 4

Spoon half the ice cream into a bowl to soften slightly, spread ice cream over cake and return to freezer for 20 mins

Step 5 Combine raisin mixture, Macadamia, and chocolate sauce in a bowl.

Spoon half of the raisin mix-

ture over icecream layer. Repeat with the next cake layer. Ie icecream and raisin mixture with cake on top.

Cover and freeze for 4 hrs or overnight.

Step 6

To serve, place a plate over the top of the springform pan and turn over. Remove the plastic.

Dust the top of cake with Cocoa powder and decorate with Chopped Macadamias!

Step 7 Enjoy!

A great marketing campaign is essential to a stress-free property transaction. The cost of this marketing is often separate to the agent’s fees and should be factored in early in the sales campaign.

Styling costs

Some properties benefit from professional styling or staging prior to sale.  For the right property, it can be a very worthwhile invest ment, potentially adding a substantial sum to the sales price.

The KPAN are a group of passionate volunteers who stage the baby animal petting zoo at the Dubbo Show each year.

Kicking off at 7pm sharp at the South Dubbo Tavern, the local community is invited to come dressed as their favourite DC or Marvel character and enjoy a fun night of comic trivia.

Michaela Ballentyne, chief steward of KPAN, said attendees should brush up on their DC and Marvel movie knowledge ahead of the event.

“There will be friendly competition between all the tables, we’ve got best dressed prizes, and a bunch of chocolate a lolly bags available for purchase on the night,” she told Dubbo Photo News

“Dressing up isn’t compulsory, but I’ll definitely be dressing up, I mean, why not? It’s a bit of fun.”

Funds raised at the event will go towards purchasing new fencing, feed and drinking containers for the animals, teats and bottles, heat lamps for the ducklings and baby chickens, toys for the piglets and lockers for the KPAN volunteers.

Tickets can be purchased on the night for $15, or four for $50.

Cracker season for show lovers

As they say in the biz, the show must go on, and after a brief interlude thanks to Covid, the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre (DRTCC) show line-up is back in full flight.

Local theatregoers are spoilt for choice with the impressive and diverse range of productions in the 2023 season.

Kicking off the season next week is international comedy phenomenon, the Umbilical Brothers, who are bringing their award-winning show, The Distraction, to town.

DRTCC manager, Linda Christof, described the show as “riotous, fast-paced

and spontaneous.”

“The Umbilical Brothers have toured to Dubbo Regional Theatre a few times now, but patrons won’t have seen anything like this new show which is like watching a green screen show with the guy’s usual antics,” she said.

“The feature will be a massive digital screen on stage, lots of props, action figures, costume changes, several video cameras not to mention audience volunteers who have a chance of seeing themselves on the big screen.”

Other performances on the agenda this year include Queen Bohemian Rhapso-

dy, the Multicultural Comedy Gala, ABBA and The Bee Gees, Creedence Clearwater Collective, Tom Gleeson’s Hard Quiz, Jesus Christ Superstar, Marcia Hines, and Mr Stink – Live On Stage.

According to Ms Christof, the top sellers so far are The Umbilical Brothers, The Australian Ballet, Wharf Revue: Looking for Albanese and a performance of Possum Magic in October, which has already sold out.

If there are at least three shows that tickle your fancy in the 2023 season, you are are encouraged to invest in a DRTCC subscription.

“It would seem theatre goers are daring to be different this year and selecting a broad range of shows in their package,” Ms Christof said.

“Whilst you only need to select three shows to become a subscriber, the majority of patrons are choosing between four or five shows.”

“By being a subscriber, you automatically tap into discounted tickets for shows, meals and accommodation as well as a free Season Launch ticket.”

To see the full season program and purchase show tickets, visit the DRTCC website.

IT was 1981 when we first started hearing Slip, Slop, Slap, one of Australia’s most successful health campaigns where a very cheery, happy little seagull in board shorts, t-shirt and hat danced across our television screens singing the jingle, “Slip, Slop, Slap.”

The catchy advertisement aimed to remind us to look after our skin with three easy ways of protecting ourselves against skin cancer by simply slipping on a t-shirt, slopping on some sunscreen, and slapping on a hat.

This year it is expected that around 16,800 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma, one Australian is diagnosed with melanoma every 30 minutes, a terrifying number indeed.

Dubbo local, Toni McMillan is one of the thousands diagnosed. Toni grew up on the central coast participating in surf lifesaving and showing horses, all outside in full sun activities. In 2007 Toni noticed a small mole on her back. She visited a health professional, and the mole was found to be a stage three melanoma which had invaded her lymph nodes. After the treat-

ness and funds for melanoma research. Toni says, “last year we attended the first Melanoma March in Dubbo with many of our friends and family, we raised $12,000.” Almost $20,000 was raised from last year’s Dubbo Melanoma March with over 100 participants marching. This year the Melanoma March will be held again on the Macquarie River foreshore on the eastern side of Serisier Bridge on Saturday, March 25. Toni says, “it’s so important to raise funds for

research into melanoma.”

It seems the research is providing patients with better outcomes, longevity, cures and precious time with family. Toni also mentioned that now she is able to have her treatment in Dubbo at the Western Cancer Centre located at Dubbo Hospital. This reduces the continual stress and costs involved in attending appointments, treatments

and stays in hospital in Sydney which she has had to endure over the years.

Registrations are now open for the Dubbo Melanoma March; you must register online to participate at https:// dubbo.melanomamarch.org. au/. Money raised from the Dubbo Melanoma March will aid the Melanoma Research Foundation and other melanoma research organisations.

Tourism steadily returns to normal

THE summer holiday period proved promising for local tourism.

According to the latest Tourism Market Report released by Dubbo Regional Council, visitation to Dubbo and Wellington during the first two weeks of school holidays and over the Christmas period was returning to normal.

Compared to the same time last year, data reveals an overall increase in accommodation bookings in both Dubbo and Wellington, while visitation to the Western

Plains Cultural Centre was up 55 per cent, the Old Dubbo Gaol was up seven per cent and visitors to the Dubbo Visitor Information Centre was up

74 per cent.

Surprisingly, visitation to Taronga Western Plains Zoo and the Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Experience Centre dropped

by six and 12 per cent respectively.

Recent weather events have also impacted visitation to the Wellington Caves, with the Cathedral Cave

and Fossil and Phosphate Mine currently closed for maintenance, and the Gaden Cave open on a dayto-day basis as staff monitor carbon dioxide levels in the cave daily.

Despite this, Dubbo Mayor Mathew Dickerson said the four-year average across accommodation and attractions in the region were steadily increasing.

“It shows Dubbo and Wellington are popular places to visit over the Christmas period and we look forward to seeing what the school holidays and the January figures have to show us.”

Because the Dubbo Region is the best place to build your career

DUBBO WORKS is highlighting the excellent career and learning opportunities the Dubbo region offers. DUBBO WORKS is a community-building initiative brought to you by Fletcher International Exports and Dubbo Photo News. To contribute ideas, email dubboworks@dubbophotonews.com.au phone 6885 4433.

Almost a decade on the job, and still smiling

IT was a chance conversation with an uncle who already worked at Fletcher International Exports (FIE), which prompted Wellington-born Joshua Slavin to apply for a job there.

“I’d only just moved to Dubbo, and he said give Fletchers a go, and I haven’t looked back,” Joshua told Dubbo Photo News

“I’m loving it. It’s one of the best workplaces I’ve ever been too. I’d had a good handful of jobs as a teenager but didn’t really like them, and this is the first full time job, and the opportunities here are endless really.

“I started at the bottom and then whatever they needed me to do after that, I’d do it. If they wanted me to use the handsaw or bandsaw, I’d put my hand up for it. When they

needed a new boner, I put my hand up for it.”

Nine-and-a-half years later the 31-year-old is still working in ‘the hot room’.

Though he was initially put off by the idea of working in what he thought was literally going to be a hot room, he soon found out it refers to the temperature of the meat coming through there, to be deboned.

“It turns out its quite a cool room. It was fine.”

Joshua was a boner for six or seven years, A-Grade, and just recently became a trainee supervisor. He’s also been sent to Western Australia train workers in the Fletcher International WA facility at Narrikup.

In the hot room, the young dad does get a glimpse of Fletcher International Exports impact around the world and the countries where the meat he and his colleagues

prepare, gets exported to.

“You get a rough idea of where it’s going to go because you’re working around the boxes and labels. Some stock might go to the USA, for example.

“Every country is different and has different requirements for the meat. Different customers want different cuts in different parts of the world. From USA to UK to China and the Middle East, we see it all.

Given the chance to encourage others thinking about working at Fletchers, Joshua repeated, the opportunities are endless.

“You can go in the hot room or cold room, a full-time job or casual, whatever you want to pick. Hours are good, money’s good, I can’t complain.

“Working at Fletcher has definitely helped me live the lifestyle that I want. I can pay off my house and still have money left over to spend time

Fearne decided in December 2022 that she’d find a part-time job over the school holidays. It seems, the job with Dubbo’s Book Connection has revealed more than Harmony could have imagined.

At times Harmony’s literacy ability has been challenging but since working at the Book Connection, she’s begun to read. Harmony says, “I read one book every two weeks, I’m not a fast reader.” But read she does and since December Harmony feels her writing and reading ability has improved. She’s enjoying books on romance and drama but loves the experience and benefits Book Connection and all those

Harmony hopes to complete Year 12 and then study at university.

“Maybe a degree in Psychology, I’d like to be able to work face to face with people and help them.”

Working at the Book Connection has been a real learning curb for Harmony and its not just about her literacy improvements. She’s learnt how the business operates, speaking to customers, offering advise on particular books and generally helping in any way possible. Earning money for the first time has its challenges too but Harmony says she is enjoying the experience and really likes her first real job with the Book Connection.

What’s special about this car? It is one owner original, unmolested. Which for a Mini Cooper S makes it extremely rare. And now a benchmark for originality.

THE developers of Dubbo’s highly anticipated No. 1 Church Street complex have lodged a request with Dubbo Regional Council to increase the number of units from 74 to 80.

With 62 of the originally approved 74 units already sold, co-developer John Walkom said the hike was in response to demand.

“In this current climate, Dubbo is still going ahead leaps and bounds,” he told Dubbo Photo News

“The demand is there for more three and four units and that’s why we are putting them in.”

“Our DA approval is for 74 units, and we are increasing that to 80

What’s

What’s the car’s background story? Purchased new, the car was rallied extensively in the early 1970s, with some success. Especially the 1972 Amoco Condobolin 24 hour 800 mile rally, winning the under 1300cc trophy. When did you buy the car? In May 1969

Has the car won many awards? Yes, it won several rally trophies in its early life, and several car display awards since., What do you love about owning/driving the car? The reactions from the public, especially when they realise it is original in every way.

units, so an additional six units.”

The additional apartments will be a mix of two, three and four bedroom dwellings, and the $35 million block will house more than 200 residents in total.

Interestingly, the addition of these units won’t impact the overall height of the building, which is located on the corner of Church and Bligh Streets, on the bank of the Macquarie River.

“The overall height isn’t really changing, there’s just been some design changes and we’ve gone for a concrete structure rather than a steel structure” Mr Walkom explained.

“There was a mezzanine level which we’ve taken out which re-

duced some height on the lower floors, so we picked up about three or four metres, and that’s enabled us to put those extra six units in.”

“It’s just a better utilisation of the space.”

The Section 4.55, which is a request to modify an approval development application, was submitted to council in December.

Mr Walkom hopes the piling process will begin in late March, with a “significant structure” taking shape by the end of 2023.

Couple surprise guests with wedding and birth announcement

On Saturday, December 17, 100 of Morgan Josephs and Jake Brooks’ family and friends turned up to Outback Cellar to celebrate Morgan’s 30th birthday and the couples’ engagement, but all wasn’t as it seemed.

Already parents to daughter Billie, 18 months, and expecting the arrival of their second child on Boxing Day, the happy couple had conjured up a plan to surprise their guests with a wedding.

But on the Thursday before the party, just two days prior to their big day, Mrs Brooks went into labour.

“I’d been having tightenings on and off all day Thursday and didn’t really think much of it,” she told Dubbo Photo News

“We did have a follow-up with our midwife Kathryn from The Centre Midwifery, these women are truly amazing, and it turned out I was in very early stages of labour.”

Despite being under strict instruction to go home and rest before she went into full labour, Mrs Brooks still had some loose ends to tie up before the wedding, for which she was determined would go ahead “whether she was in one piece or two.”

“I couldn’t help myself,” she said.

“I still needed to finish our wedding run sheet to email to our photographer, so after dinner I went on the laptop and got 10 minutes in before Jake sent me to bed.”

At 10:45pm, Mrs Brooks waters broke and at 2am, they called Kathryn the midwife and arranged to meet her at the hospital.

But, little bub had others plans, and things began to escalate.

“From the time Jake hung up the phone [to Kathryn] my surges were strong and holding, I couldn’t get up,” Mrs Brooks explained.

“That’s when it happened, for all the women who have experienced child-

birth will understand the burning ring of fire - we weren’t going to make it to the hospital.”

“Jake got straight back on the phone to Kathryn who arranged for a second midwife to meet her at our place.”

Then the most magical thing happened.

“It was 15 minutes from the time Jake called Kathryn to us holding our beautiful baby boy in our arms,” Mrs Brooks said.

“My amazing husband delivered our son at home on Friday, December 16, 2022 at 2:26am”

Given both Mum and bub were feeling well, the family chose to continue the post-birth at home as well, with no trip to hospital required.

All this, in the early hours of the day before a wedding!

While most women wouldn’t think twice about calling the party off, there was never any doubt in Mrs Brooks’ mind.

Provided she rest as much as possible, the midwives gave her the all clear to move ahead with the big surprise, and now they had another little secret to share with their loved ones – a bundle of joy named Zayden Jake Peter Brooks.

When their celebrant arrived late on Friday afternoon for a rehearsal, he was “gobsmacked” to hear about the unplanned homebirth and see Mum up and about so soon after.

“It was his idea to hide Zayden with mine and Jake’s mum and he would announce the arrival and our mums walk him down the aisle in the capsule to us,” Mrs Brooks said.

Already shocked by the surprise wedding factor, the surprise birth announcement meant there was no chance of being a dry eye in the room.

As for Mrs Brooks, she said she felt “really good” despite giving birth mere hours earlier.

“I had a couple of power naps throughout the morning while the bridesmaids

were having their hair and makeup done and I was constantly being checked on to make sure I was sitting down, that I’d eaten and drank,” she said.

“Come 10pm that evening, I was exhausted.”

“Looking back now I definitely was still running on an adrenalin high.”

A few weeks on, the Brooks have settled into life as a family of four nicely, with daughter Billie smitten with her baby brother Zayden.

“Jake, our daughter Billie, Zayden and I are all doing really well,” she said.

“Zayden fits right into our little family and it’s as if he’s his always been here.”

Through the lens of 1st Dubbo Scouts

COMMUNITY and cameras were the focus of a photography excursion enjoyed by members of 1st Dubbo Scouts, who visited the Shoyoen Japanese Gardens for

nature, culture and to share the expertise of Dubbo Camera Club representatives.

Cub Leader Vaughn Simmons arranged for the amateur photographers to guide the young people, offering a range of tips and tricks along with imaginative

ideas to improve their skills.

“It was about getting the kids into the outdoors and into nature and to experience the world and capture that by taking a photo,” he said.

The youth members, leaders and parents took along cameras

along with digital devices to record the beautiful surroundings, including ducks and fish, plant life, bridges and waterways.

“The kids are so tech-savvy in their lives, but this was all about moving into the outdoors and having an artistic perspective.”

Mr Simmons said the Dubbo Camera Club members had very generously shared their knowledge and enthusiasm for the craft, which the Scouts greatly appreciated.

“The Camera Club group made such an effort talking to the youth and encouraging them, which was really great. The youth really got a lot out of the experience which was all about the learning process.”

Mr Simmons said the Scouts regularly aim to bring knowledge and new skills to the group.

“We like to bring in people that can show us their skills, and involve the youth, things like art and mechanics.”

The young people also learn bushcraft, woodwork, knot tying, map reading and orientation as part of their development.

The excursion was part of a pioneering and photography camp that was one of the final events of the 2022 year on the Scouting calendar. It was followed by a successful evening of selling candles and glow sticks at the annual Carols by Candlelight.

Scouts will recommence in February 2023. Any enquiries can be sent to 1stdubboscouts@gmail. com

Geurie Salvage Corps

It was 1942, the Japanese had just landed in New Guinea and one of their submarines moved into Sydney Harbour, World War II as we know it was very real even to the folks of rural and regional NSW.

With all the war time demands on various resources, Australian children were encouraged to salvage and collect aluminium, brass, copper, lead, zinc, rubber and other items to be recycled and used for the production of weapons, aircraft and vehicles required for war time.

A small group of formed the Geurie Boys Salvage Corps and began to collect such wares. Ken Jones remembers it well: “It was their way of helping, there were about twelve of us, we took our collection of salvaged pieces to the council and from there it was sent for recycling.”

The image provided by Ken and his brother Wally was taken with a box brownie camera and is incredibly clear. The image was taken at where Ken says his father was Postmaster for around 18 years.

Mathew Dickerson was on hand to cut the official ribbon.

The Horseland team are excited to be back in Dubbo. They look forward to providing the community with a high level equestrian store, while also providing local jobs and many sponsorship opportunities.

Horseland Dubbo is open 6 days a week, closed on Sunday.

Anyone for tennis? Good turn-up for Club Open Day

PARAMOUNT Tennis Club’s Summer Open Day was a great success last weekend with around 50 people enjoying a hit and a bit of socialising off the court.

Despite the rainy weather in the morning, the clouds cleared and the sun came out for it to be a perfect afternoon for tennis.

Players of all ages and abilities did their best to play like their heroes currently in action at the Australian Open, while conversations off-court focused on the action in Melbourne and on the lo-

competitive tennis, as well as coaching for players of all ages and ability, all year round.

People interested in having a social hit can book a court via the club’s website, while Paramount also offers membership for anyone planning to play regularly. Membership provides players with free court hire for the year and, at $85 per adult and $30 per child under 18, offers fantastic value, while also supporting the club maintain and improve its facilities.

Summer Bowls on a “damp Sundee morn”

IN town last “Sundee” morning, the good bowls folks of Dubbo, woke to no sun, but plenty of rain!

As the morning progressed, the rains eased, the greens drained, and 21 folk had thoughts that a game of bowls would be a nice distraction, though the drizzle continued.

Fortunately, by 10am, the rain had moved on, allowing the “Sundee Combo” bowls to get underway although the wind was cool and the green quite wet, but still very playable.

The management therefore decided to shorten the games back to 10 ends as the forecast was rather dire – just as most of the rollers packed their stuff away, down came the rain again.

Over on Rink Four, a pairs plus swinger event was scheduled with Chris Castlehouse appointed as the swinger for the event.

Her bowling is improving week after week and, with a bit more consistency, will be a good lead roller if not a good swinger.

Last week, she swung for Leo and Mel as well as for Al and Pete Ruzans.

Chris was the first to roll with a fiver on the end two giving a good feeling to Al and Pete with an eight on the board after three ends,

Leo with Mel then found their form and ably mounted a fightback with three shots by end six then a sixer on the following end almost floored the team of Pete. The scores were now equal, with Leo and Mel then expressing their authority with a foursy on end eight. End nine went to Al and Pete with a double, end 10 the last end and it went to Leo and Mel – a three-shot lead and a win, 14 to 11. A close contest this was, pity the game had to stop.

Across on rink one, six bowlers

enjoyed what was another close encounter. However, as end three was done with, seven shots in the bag was a good start for Ron Mc, Kenno, and Col C.

But Shirley, Chris S, and Graham had their own ideas of how this game was to be, getting five shots over ends four to six, and within two of the lead, they were ready to put all they got into the game.

Ron, Kenno, and Col then added four shots to their collection to show off who the real movers are as they basked with the six-shot lead at end eight.

A problem, almost as bad as getting a flat while driving down the highway, Shirley, Chris, and Graham put together a nice foursy on nine with a double on 10 to level the game. Graham called this game off, a good call as the drizzle was coming with the result 11 shots each, five ends each.

Roger and Pete Sinclair shared their ability with an intent to defeat Doc and Pete Bennison in the game on rink five.

The weather was slightly different to some of the other rinks, the wind blowing chilly, which Pete B did not enjoy.

That might have explained why his bowls were not doing so well.

In a strong showing, Roger and Pete confidently rolled end after end to score eight shots by end eight. The others – Doc and Pete were either forced out, or just did not get close to the white ball, landing them into quite a bit of trouble and with the three they did manage to get by end eight, not a happy time for them.

Quits was called after end eight, they knew the weather was about to do what most bowlers dread while playing. The score was eight to three and five ends to three.

Eric with wisdom decided to do

what he enjoyed last year – getting back to the Sundee Combo bowls. For his first game for the year, he was teamed with Gaye and Bryan. Like all good things, an opposition was needed, and they were Sue Mc, Collin Teale, and Matt Quill.

From a good and reliable source, a winner was divulged. From what it seemed, both sides managed to get foursy scores, but we have been informed the final result was five ends each, 13 shots to seven. There certainly entertained the morning with a lot of banter, joy and ‘go-girl’ stuff.

Overall winners of the morning – Roger Sherwin and Pete Sinclair, with Eric Satchell, Gaye Cottee, and Bryan O’Sullivan the runners-up.

Hopefully this coming Sundee will have weather that all bowlers enjoy – warm, slight breeze, and no drizzle or rain!

MORE than $1 million has crossed the finished line to renew the track surface at the Barden Park Athletics Centre of Excellence.

It's great news on the back of a successful 2023 Athletics NSW Country Championships.

The $1,060,000 in funding to Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) will pay for the renewal of its world-class artificial surface, Member for Dubbo Dugald

Saunders said at the venue where he was joined by Mayor Mathew Dickerson and representatives from Athletics NSW.

“The synthetic track at Barden Park is internationally-certified for athletes to set world-record times, and this renewal is crucial for maintaining its World Athletics certification, and its ability to continue attracting state and national carnivals,” Mr Saunders said.

“Council will use this funding to renew the top synthetic surface, making sure our athletes are performing on the best track possible. Events like the Country Championships attract thousands of people to Dubbo, bringing with them a great economic boost for our region!” he added.

The funding will be used to prepare the track before laying the new "Rekortan M" top

Dubbo Ducks gearing up for Western Districts meet

THE past two weeks have seen the Dubbo Ducks swim club gearing up for the AIF Western Districts Carnival to be held on Sunday, February 12, in Wellington.

This preparation includes the introduction of the 100-metres Freestyle event, which many of the flock find very arduous.

Josh Bird and Mark Prentice, however, tied in first being only 0.11 of a second off their best time with Nicole also a close 0.12 off her time.

Although Jacob Pearce won this event two weeks ago, this Sunday he had to be content with fourth place.

Josh was also on form in the 50-metres Freestyle coming in ahead of Rob Dickerson and Jacob Pearce.

layer synthetic surface across the entire track, line-marking in accordance with World Athletics and Little Athletics specifications, and commissioning and certifying the renewed track.

Bill Greenwood has been very consistent the past two weeks, taking out the final of the 25 metre Freestyle on both days.

Louise Taylor and Mark Prentice won the final of the Twotimes 25-metre Breaststroke/ Breaststroke Brace relay from Bill Greenwood and Robert Dickerson.

If you are interested in this great event, Captain Dave Sparkes is taking names of swimmers who wish to attend the AIF carnival at Wellington.
