SPORT is King

THERE is no-one more passionate about sport, than Greg King.

For the past 24 years, the man who first tasted sport in Moree as a kid, has been at the helm of Dubbo Sports World, throwing his energy into all things with a bat, ball, net, or court, providing opportunities for thousands of novice sportspeople right through to

national champions.

The man most people know as “Kingy” says that being at Sports World, and in his previous stints on the north coast and at Dubbo Indoor Cricket Centre, has never been a chore.

“Hard-work for sure, with many bumps along the way, but I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said emphatically.

I’ve never considered it a job. It’s always been a pleas-

ure. Sport has enabled me to have a way of life doing what I love,” he added.

Now “Kingy”, is finally ready to move on.

“I’ve given my life to sport, and embraced community living,” he said proudly.

I feel like I’ve done my share, and I’m getting on in years, so it would be nice to follow other interests,” Greg explained.

FRIENDLY BANTER

on Macquarie Street

Whilst walking along Macquarie Street in the last couple of weeks, Dubbo Photo News has noticed the friendly banter on the shopfront of the new Rebel Sports store and Dubbo’s iconic Brian Barnes SportsPower store.

At first the new Rebel store used the marketing ploy of “Hey Dubbo, sport is calling! How will you answer?” The response from our local Brian Barnes SportsPower store was nothing short of terrific: “We’ve been answering the call for over 50 years.” And indeed they have. The locally owned-and-operated store hasn’t always been in the Macquarie Street location but has certainly provided all our sporting needs for over five decades. Not only has SportsPower provided sporting goods for the Dubbo community and surrounding regional communities, but it has also provided an endless trail of donations and sponsorship for many a sporting event over its years in business. Rebel on the other hand, have

been in operation since 1985 when they opened their first rebel store in Bankstown, southwest Sydney. They now have 160 stores across Australia and a team of over 6000 employees, quite an enormous feat. Rebel will also be employing many locals. It’s game on!

HOPEFULLY, gone are the days we filled a shoebox with a year full of receipts and dropped them off to our trusty accountant to sort through the myriad of little pieces of paper. Digital technology has surely helped some to keep records of their receipts and expenditure along with the many accountancy programs now available including MYOB, QuickBooks, Zero and more.

As a small business owner there are lots of tasks which need to be recorded and delivered to accountants. Here are just some of those which may help bring all your documents into line and make the accountant’s job a little less of a headache.

Firstly, if you do have accountancy software, a summary of your income and expenses in a profit and loss statement would be beneficial. If you carry stock in your business, you’ll have to conduct a stocktake. Information on how to conduct a stocktake is on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website.

Next, print out a summary of your debtors and creditors, collate

records of asset purchases or expenditure on improvements such as rental property renovations. Make sure you have copies of your Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding, fringe benefits tax (FBT), and Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Lastly, check that you’ve been meeting all your superannuation requirements and make digital copies of any paper records that may be required by the accountant when compiling your tax return. Paper records include bank

statements and receipts of any kind.

If you don’t own a business and are working for wages, generally you’ll need to gather your PAYG summary, bank statements and any documents required for

claiming – including invoices for expenses related to your work for example.

For more information, visit the ATO website, call the ATO on 13 28 66, or talk to your tax professional.

Looking to buy land locally? Keswick Estate new blocks on offer

SOME bright news for locals looking to get into the housing market: there are still blocks available in the reasonably-affordable Keswick Estate.

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) is continuing to promote and sell blocks of land in Stage Five (Release Two) of the project, despite the market cooling this year with the current economic climate having a large impact on overall sales.

“Blocks of land in Keswick Estate are moderately priced for Dubbo and yet we have seen a real slowdown in sales, which can be attributed to recent interest rates rises, cost of living pressures and the increased cost to build a new home,” DRC’s Manager Prop-

Windfall for Taronga casual staff as zoo addresses historic

underpayments

TARONGA Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo are acting to address historic underpayments to casual staff, totalling approximately $2.6 million.

The self-identified six-year historic pay shortfalls affect casual employees, and remediation through back payments which are scheduled to commence in July.

The payments will include interest of 6 per cent and superannuation at 11 per cent.

Taronga Chief Executive Cameron Kerr apologised to current and past staff who have been affected.

“Our people are the most important part of our organisation, and I am deeply sorry that this error has occurred. I offer my sincere apologies to those current and former staff who have been impacted,” he said.

APOLOGY

Isaac Compton interview

Due to unforeseen circumstances the planned interview with Isaac Compton will not run this week but do stay tuned, it’s coming soon.

What’s the Voice referendum about?

It’s about whether we should change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by setting up an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. A referendum is the only way to change the Australian Constitution.

erty and Land Development

Since the initial auction in October 2022, 13 lots have sold with an additional two currently under offer from a total of 52 lots.

“Council had been fielding a modest number of enquiries in 2021 and early 2022 regarding land for sale in Keswick Estate but this has slowed considerably in 2023 with current economic impacts playing a large role,” Ms Pahl said.

“Whilst sales have been cooling, we want to do what is right for the community and to maintain the sale price for the land so that the proceeds from these sales can come back to council and support projects in the community,”

she added.

Six local real estate agents are also now on board and able to sell blocks of land in Keswick Estate under an open agency agreement in place with council. “We are working with local real estate agents who are also selling land in Keswick Estate to help increase exposure and sales,” she said.

Blocks of land in Keswick Estate start from $223,000 with blocks ranging in size from 601.9m² to 941.2m².

“There were four dual occupancy lots available at the time of release however these were quick to be purchased and now only one of these dual occupancy blocks remain for sale,” Ms Pahl concluded.

What is the Voice?

The Voice would be a permanent body that gives independent advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect First Nations people.

The Voice aims to help the Parliament and Government to make better decisions and deliver better outcomes for First Nations people.

How will the Voice be set up?

How it’s set up would be determined after the referendum with input from First Nations people, the broader public and the Government. The Parliament would then make a law to set up the Voice.

The intention is that its members will be chosen by and representative of, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from across Australia.

Sport’s king, Greg, looks to spread wings to a new world

From page 1

He cited a battle with throat cancer a few years ago and its ongoing challenges, as well as the COVID lockdowns, as particularly tough times, but he says he wouldn’t change a thing.

“I moved to Dubbo from the north coast to help Jeff Costello at his Indoor Cricket Centre after my wife died from cancer,” he revealed.

“We had established our own indoor sports businesses in Kempsey, and then Lismore, and I met ‘Cossie’ through indoor cricket” Greg said.

The call, he said, proved to be at the most opportune of times.

“His call came at the right time, so I moved my young family out here, and Dubbo has been my home ever since.

“I remarried, although my girls have grown and spread their wings, the support from Sue, Bronwyn, and Kacey has been immeasurable throughout the journey,” Greg added.

I caught-up with Greg on a Sunday as he was lazing around the zoo with his grandchildren.

“It’s not a bad way to spend the first long weekend named in your honour,” he said, as I laughed!

Greg took over Sports World when Jeff and Nia Costello decided to pursue other paths, and the centre has grown over time.

“We were originally four basketball courts in two halls with movable nets to enable indoor ventures like cricket,

netball, volleyball and soccer.

“Recently, we’ve added Try Sports and a golf simulator to cater for more people and changing interests,” Kingy added.

Sports World also introduced “Inflatable World” a few years ago.

“That’s been a huge hit with school groups, visitors and even adults who have come in for parties. People come from Forbes, Parkes, Cobar, Bourke, Mudgee, Gilgandra, Wellington and Dunedoo to let off steam and have fun,” the bloke, who has a bit of a big kid in him, smiled.

Over the years, Greg has been one of the first to put up his hand for charities and special causes.

“We’ve hosted fundraisers for many community groups and those in need, and always been open to groups who need assistance to help young sportspeople achieve their goals.”

Greg is also proud that Sports World has hosted many Australian and state Indoor Cricket titles and other events.

“In fact, we have become the home for the Police National Championships and, this year, we had 36 teams who played 99 games over two days.”

Greg is looking to either partner-up with others, or to sell the business outright. He says there are so many opportunities to take Sports World forward.

‘We have enough land at the site to

add four more basketball and all-purpose courts and, as the world is embracing new sports like climbing walks, beach sand touch, and volleyball and the like, it is open for someone with vision.”

Greg is realistic enough to see that his DOB - date of birth - is also getting further away so he would love to have an injection of new energy.

“We’ve laid the foundations over the past quarter of a century, now there is an opening for someone to build for the future.”

I asked Greg how he felt about the yetto-be constructed indoor sports stadium adjacent to CSU, Dubbo College, and the hospital precinct.

“It’s a brilliant concept. We need to upgrade so more national titles can be held across the broad sector of sports.

“At the moment, we are restricted so having an indoor stadium with a stateof-the-art gymnastics centre will be a Godsend,” Kingy said with typical enthusiasm.

He is naturally disappointed though that government agencies did not approach him to work together, “but that’s the way it is.

“I chose to set-up a private business, so I don’t attract subsidies like community organisations, but I feel out here, where there are already thousands of kids would have been ideal location,” Greg said without a touch of rancour.

If you are a sports and recreation lover and have plenty of energy and can envisage “a way of life” that enables you to achieve those things, give Kingy a call at Sports World on Sheraton Road.

Regional Australia Council meet discusses jobs, energy transition

REGIONAL jobs and the nation’s energy transition were the top agenda items at the most-recent Regional Australia Council (RAC) meeting.

Created as a cohort of Australia’s largest private sector employers, the conflab at Parliament House, Canberra, coincided with the launch of the Regional Australia Institute’s (RAI) “Regional Jobs Report 2022 – Big Skills Challenge” and RAI CEO, Liz Ritchie’s address to the National Press Club on Wednesday.

The Big Skills Challenge report was good news for employment in the bush, finding that regional job advertisements grew three-times faster than in metropolitan Australia at the end of 2022, with demand highest for doctors and nurses; aged care and child care workers; receptionists and sales assistants.

Over two days the council was briefed by representatives leading the government’s jobs and skills reforms and the nation’s energy transition task.

RAC members include Aurizon, Australia Post, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, Commonwealth Bank, Domain, Elders, Essential Energy, KPMG, NBN Co, Nutrien Ag Solutions, NRMA, Optus, Transgrid, Telstra and Woolworths Group.

“Regional Council members represent some of the largest

employers in regional Australia. Each member is being challenged by recruitment difficulty and the flow-on effect to their business and industry,” Ms Ritchie said.

Newly appointed Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) Chair, Professor Peter Dawkins, met with the council to discuss the Federal Government’s plan for jobs. “Professor Dawkins outlined the remit and priorities of JSA and how it would speak to regional Australia’s critical worker deficit. Importantly, council members, from a diverse range of industries

spanning retail to energy, had the chance to share with Professor Dawkins the jobs and skills needs of their individual organisations.”

Extending the focus on jobs and skills, Skills and Training Deputy Secretary Anna Faithfull and First Assistant Secretary, National Skills Agreement, Vicki Wilkinson, explained the government’s reforms to the Vocational Education Sector.

“We welcome the plan – via the National Skills Agreement – to establish National Centres of Excellence linking TAFEs, universities and industry; plus the focus on increasing apprenticeship completion and on prioritising training in the care sector,” Ms Ritchie said.

Skilled migration is a critical part of addressing regional Australia’s workforce deficit and the council valued an update from Deputy Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration and Member for Mallee, Dr Anne Webster.

Only two weeks after it was announced, the council was also briefed on the role of the National Net Zero Authority by Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Senator Jenny McAllister and First Assistant Secretary, Net Zero Economy Taskforce, Kerren Crosthwaite.

Lorraine now at 275 blood donations; for others, and her late husband...

LIFELONG blood donor Lorraine recently chalked up her 275th donation in Dubbo, though now, her giving has a very personal quality.

“It was way back in the dim dark days, it would have been in about 1966 (when I started), and I gave blood on-andoff throughout the years since then,” she recalls.

“But now it’s to show appreciation – a ‘thank-you’ – for the great work they do. You see, my husband had numerous transfusions in the last years of his life,” she explained.

Fit, healthy and active, her partner was a truck driver with whom they had planned a happy retirement together, she said.

“We came up for a weekend, we just liked the town, so we

moved up here from Sydney, but he got leukemia and had to give up work,” she said.

“I was just so grateful for all the donations of blood made by other people that I thought I’d like to give a bit back,” she added.

Retired herself now, she drops in about every fortnight to the blood bank in Dubbo and offers herself, often donating the vital plasma out of

the blood that is used now in literally dozens of medical procedures.

“With the plasma, they put a line in your arm and take the plasma out, and put the blood back in your system,” she explained.

She said that, even though she is someone with a natural aversion to medical procedures, it is all quite painless.

“They keep a very close eye on you, how you’re doing, and you can have a cold drink or milkshake to replenish yourself before you go,” she said.

“I don’t like needles. I had them as a child, but this is all quite pleasant,” she added.

With the cooler months now upon is, this is one of the times of the year when common illnesses force plenty of people to cancel their blood donations, Red Cross spokesperson Brian Bruce explained.

“The need for blood is constant, but as we’re coming into winter, we can have 40 per cent of donors cancel on the day due to flus and colds,” he said.

“Winter season is the peak season for donating. I’m 48 this year and I started donating six years ago, and it was then that I found out that I had high blood pressure – if it wasn’t for the donating, I may not ever have found out,” he said.

As this is National Blood Donor Week, the Red Cross is celebrating the 5936 locals who give blood to the community – the Red Cross describes them as ‘the Lifeblood of the community’.

For “Specially Priced” Personal subscriptions, Gift subscriptions, Sample packs or Bulk orders for Aged Care facilities or Retirement Villages, go to:

As part of National Blood Donor Week, Lifeblood has teamed up with Australian-based illustration brand Min Pin to create a limited-edition bandage which will be rolled on to the arms of donors who donate at Lifeblood donor centres throughout June.

Mr Bruce said this month’s bandage is a colourful flock of birds flying high together, which is symbolic of our community of blood and plasma donors.

do it alone.

“Dubbo Donor Centre needs 1995 additional donors to join their ranks over the next year.

“We want to say a huge thank-you to all of our donors who made a difference (over the past year) and to ask others to make a change for life by becoming a blood donor,” Brian said.

National Blood Donor Week runs until Sunday and is designed to provide an opportunity to thank the nation’s blood and plasma donors for their 1.6 million life-saving donations each year, and highlights the ongoing need for more people to become donors.

“Birds of a feather save lives together, and we’re calling on everyone to join our flock of lifesavers this National Blood Donor Week and receive a new limited edition Min Pin bandage,” Brian said.

“With one in three of us needing blood or blood products in our lifetime, donors like Lorraine can’t

Lorraine said that, while her health holds up, she is determined to continue the selfless donating of her blood and plasma for those needing it in the community.

“If I donate every fortnight for the rest of my life, I will have paid back the transfusions that my husband needed when he was sick,” she concluded.

the big “8-0”

Happy Birthday, Ken!

Relatives and friends gathered at RSL Sporties on Sunday, June 4, to celebrate Ken Windsor achieving his 80-year milestone.

Among others, daughter, Kara came from Sydney, and grand-daughter, Christine, driving all the way from Newcastle for the weekend.

The evening was a great celebration, with Ken reading a poem he wrote himself: “A Toast to Eighty.”

This was followed later by a presentation on “Eighty years of Ken” which included history, interspersed with some humour. Ken appreciated the attendance of his quasi-adopted family, headed by Heather Orth, who have been close friends since 1970.

The evening was enjoyed by all those present, ranging in age from five to 75, excepting Ken, of course, who was 80!

DUBBO WORKS is highlighting the excellent career and learning opportunities the Dubbo region off you by Fletcher International Exports and Dubbo Photo News. To contribute ideas,

A great place for women to work

WHEN Megan Munro, 30, approached Fletcher International Export for a casual harvest job last year, little did she know she’d love it so much that harvest would come and go and she’d stay on.

Right now, the focus at the Fletcher grain terminal is the start of cotton season where a small team of hard-working people, including Megan, are busy warehousing and packing cotton for shipment to customers that by the end of the season will amount to about 100,000 bales.

Megan operates the weigh bridge, is packing cotton seed and operates various machinery.

“When I first started at Fletchers, I was a single mum who’d

just moved back to town and I was looking for a job. I hadn’t done this kind of work before but there was lots of support and I felt like I fitted in quite easily,”

Megan said.

“The weigh bridge is the first port of call for trucks coming in delivering grain (during harvest) and we enter them into the system, we test the grain and grade it, then we send it to the appropriate location on site.

“Right now, I’m involved in the packing of the cotton. It’s usually two people, you have a loader operator who puts the cotton in the hopper and then I’ll control the hopper with a belt, and it sends it into the shipping container. You pack it to a certain weight.

“I love it here. Every day’s different and I’m constantly meet-

ing new people and learning new things.

“In the past I’ve usually worked with animals so this is completely different for me. I am from a farming background, but I never really had a lot to do with grain, it was more sheep and cattle.” Megan’s goal is to switch to full-time work at Fletchers, adding to the skills she’s already attained along the way, and would encourage other women looking for a new opportunity to give it a go.

“Come on out, what harm’s it going to be, it’s a great place to work and great people, I absolutely love it. They’re flexible around my family situation, they’re great like that, and it’s like a family here – everybody gets along.”

GOATS ON THE GO: Kieran’s new job to promote industry’s future

THE recent appointment of a dedicated goat production officer shows the projected importance of the goat industry in the Central West.

Funded through the “Going Ahead With Goats Project”, Kieran Smith commenced in the role of dedicated goat extension officer in late April, and he has been busily working with producers and stakeholders to get their input into how he and this project can help drive the goat industry forward.

“This is a great opportunity for me personally to do something that I’m passionate about and really make a difference for Western NSW goat producers and the industry,” Kieran said.

“The ‘Going Ahead With Goats Project’ represents a wonderful opportunity to build on the work the industry and goat producers have done in the past 20 or so years and continue to take it forward, and I am really excited to be involved,” he added.

In his full-time role, Kieran is providing ongoing support and capacity-building opportunities for goat producers in Western NSW, while also supporting the industry to continue to grow its export and domestic markets.

In recent years, goats have grown into a massive industry, particularly in Western NSW, as highlighted by:

Australian goat meat exports were valued at $298.6 million in 2021/22.

NSW goat producers supplied 64per cent of the goats processed nationally in 2021/22.

Western NSW supplied 86per cent of the goats produced from NSW.

The “Going Ahead With Goats Project” will dovetail with work being undertaken by project partners NSW Department of Primary Industries, with the aim of accelerating the adoption of goat research and development and growing market share – both domestically and in the export market – for Western NSW goat producers.

A teacher

What was the moment or the person who inspired you, to work in your current field?

What is your current role?

I am the Director of OzArk Environment & Heritage, a consultancy firm based in

What’s been your best day on the job?

There’s been so many… Discovering the Cave of Lot behind a monastery above the Dead Sea in Jordan; finding an Aboriginal stone axe production site in the New England with the local Traditional Owners; digging to reveal the walls of the 1890s Old Dubbo Gaol and 1860s Dubbo courthouse... and so many more!

I also like to sing and dance. Check out the next DATS production, Jesus Christ Superstar, and I’ll be there somewhere.

What words of encouragement would you give to young person today, who’s thinking of doing similar work to you?

Go for it. It may seem like archaeology/heritage is a very niche industry, and it is in a way, but it is a very rewarding career, full of variety, and we need more people!

MOST of us have visited Wellington on more than the odd occasion and enjoyed the now-iconic and super-friendly Cactus Café and Gallery.

Marilyn Keirle, owner of the Cactus Café and Gallery is soon to retire from the café life she’s known for the past 25 years and venture to new horizons. In the beginning, “I had a sudden brainstorm hit one evening, and I really had a vision of bringing the little school back to life as a cafe and gallery. It had closed in 1996, and left vacant, and so my adventure began,” Marilyn said. The little school she refers to is the Sacred Heart Infants School at Wellington where Cactus Café and Gallery now stands. Ironically, Marilyn was educated at the school as a young child with her siblings.

Marilyn was born in Orange in 1946 and moved to Wellington late in 1955, where her dad opened a wholesale fruit and vegetable distribution business. “I married my husband, Roger, 54 years ago and we had

four children, all of whom have been important collaborators in Keirle’s Pharmacy or Cactus Café and Gallery over the last thirty years,” Marilyn explained.

The Mexican Ambassador to Australia, Senor Raphael Steger, opened Cactus Café and Gallery – a Spanish mission-style building built in 1930 – on October 3rd, 1998. “It was all very exciting and scary, too, as we were all amateurs except for my chef, Natalie, so a pretty steep learning curve was had by all,” Marilyn said.

Over the last 25 years, a wonderful mix of people have all been part of the Cactus team including family, friends, juniors, work experience school pupils, and international newcomers. “I am very grateful to them all and the new ideas they have imparted to make the business such a special place to have spent time over all the years. Our main focus has been on great customer service, friendly atmosphere and tasty home-style cooking and coffee,” Marilyn said.

There’s been many a function held at Cactus Café and Gallery, too. It truly has

been a wonderful meeting place for locals and visitors alike. “Over the years we have had dinners, weddings, wakes, musical evenings, markets, bush dances, a movie club, workshops, our family reunions, Christmas and Easter lunches and many events I've forgotten. Lots of fun over the years!” Marilyn reminisced.

While Cactus Cafe and Gallery will be no more, new owners Kylie Barton and Julie Hancock will bring a wonderful fresh vibe to this beautiful building in its third life-

time. Marilyn wishes them well: “I wish them every success. I would also sincerely like to thank my family and staff for years of loyal service and love, local suppliers for wonderful produce and cakes, and customers new and old, who have made the years worthwhile.

“I hope we can meet up on the verandah for a coffee in the future. It’s been an amazing 25 years, and so glad I took the plunge. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of this time,” Marilyn said.

Struggling with bills? Free mobile vet truck visit to Wellington

WITH many people in the Central West struggling with high interest rates and inflation, proper veterinary care is one of those costs that has become out of reach for many families.

But good news for pet-owners in the Wellington area: a free travelling vet clinic is coming to town with a visit by the Animal Welfare League’s (AWL) mobile vet truck.

The truck will be stationed at Apex Park on Thornton Street, Wellington, from 9am–12 noon on Sunday, June 18, providing a range of cost-free services, including health checks, microchipping, and dog C3 and cat F3 vaccinations.

The AWL’s purpose-built

B-Double trailer is more than 25 metres long and includes specially-designed areas for animal surgeries, an isolation room, and more than 35 recovery cages.

It also features equipment for blood work, fridges, a veterinary scale, extensive storage to hold veterinary supplies, and more.

For those bringing along their pets, cats must be in carriers, and dogs on leads, and also bring a mobile device to sign-in.

There is also a limit of three animals treated, per household.

Spicers Creek Wind Farm's draft planning agreement on the way

DUBBO Regional Council has agreed to negotiate a draft planning agreement with Squadron Energy over the Spicers Creek Wind Farm Project.

THE decision comes after Squadron Energy Pty Ltd submitted a letter of offer, featuring components relating to strategic and infrastructure projects funding, and a community benefits scheme for local community groups and other not-for-profit organisations.

THE offer also included terms of 1.5 per cent of Capital Investment Value in accordance with Council’s adopted Renewable Energy Framework, with any agreement negotiated being over a 30-year term with annual payments to Council.

“WE'VE got a responsibility to ensure future generations are not worse off as a result of our

decision-making and actions, and working with organisations such as Squadron Energy assist in strengthening our community and local economy,” Dubbo mayor Mathew Dickerson said.

WHILE the project will mean the building of 117 wind turbines, only 107 will be in the Dubbo Regional Local Government Area, with the remaining 10 turbines in the Warrumbungle Shire Council Local Government Area. This means that the Planning Agreement funding would be considered on a pro-rata basis per turbine.

THE draft planning agreement will be made available for public exhibition, with a further report to be presented to Council for consideration, including any submissions, once the public exhibition period has closed.

The Real Estate Chat with Karen Chant from Chant and Co

4 Ways To Prepare For Open Homes

Have an easy cleaning routine…

You don’t need to do a full on deep clean prior to each viewing – but having a swift and simple cleaning schedule will help. Tasks should include wiping surfaces especially the kitchen and bathroom, taking out trash and cleaning floors.

…And a simple tidy plan

Have roll-out storage boxes and containers handy to throw bits and bobs into in case of last-minute viewings. Keep pleasant touches such as reed diffusers, candles and fresh towels in an easy to reach place so that you can pop them out quickly before potential buyers arrive.

Clear your schedule

Try not to book significant events at your home during the months following your property’s placement on the market. If you have family events on the cards inform your real estate agent as soon as possible so that they can avoid these dates when planning open houses and inspections.

Organise child and pet care

If you have children or pets it’s advisable to take them elsewhere during viewings. Identify backups who might be able to help you out at short notice so that you know they will always have somewhere safe to go, and you’ll never have to turn down an inspection at the last minute.

A proud Australian family business for 37 years, Eureka Furniture offers a range of sustainable, unique furniture pieces, specialising in solid and reclaimed timber.

“We celebrate the imperfect products that you simply do not see in the synthetic,” CEO Joel Brisblat of Eureka Furniture said.

“When creating furniture with solid and recycled wood, marble and vintage leathers the product is innately authentic.”

“There is a beauty that cannot be replicated. A soul resides in each piece. As the world became aware of sustainable living, the wood previously burnt was salvaged and recycled timber quickly became a sensation.”

The items they sell are great value for money and they are passionate about customer service. Advantages include:

• Fully assembled and quality checked

• Australian owned and operated

• 100 per cent sustainably sourced timber

• Quality fabrics such as genuine leather and recycled timber

Nathan Brisblat, who comes from the Mediterranean, founded the business following his future wife Gillian to Australia nearly 45 years ago, bringing with him an appreciation for authenticity, a love of quality and a strong desire to build something special.

Nathan liked what he saw in recycled timber products and so Eureka Furniture was born. The first store opened in Brisbane with quality crafted and solid timber pieces.

Today Eureka Furniture has grown to 40 plus stores from Cairns to Canberra. Still utilising recycled timbers, they also have a variety of modern products.

Offering quality hardwood timber furniture, including contemporary living, country living, Boho, urban, mid-century modern, traditional and alfresco living.

The Bengal dining collection is chic and authentic while the Glenrowan collection highlights the natural beauty of the Australian eucalypt timber.

The Farmhouse range offers rustic timbers, natural fibres and neutral hues that embody a perfectly imperfect farmhouse home.

THUMBS UP!

Thumbs up and a very big thank-you to Lizzie in the ladies shoe department of Myer. Lizzie went above what was expected to serve me; her service and patience are second to none and she was so helpful. Her whole attitude was so lovely and obliging. I’m so appreciative.

Thumbs up to all the nursing kitchen and cleaning staff at Trangie Hospital. A friend of mine has received the most amazing love care and respect from absolutely every person that has attended to her whilst she is in there.

Thumbs up to Paul from Godfrey’s for excellent customer service, going the extra mile in demonstrating a range of vacuum cleaners for a customer. We were happy to buy one from this business.

Thumbs up to Dubbo Fire Station for dealing with some rubbish being burned off recently. A reminder to everyone to check the rules and regulations before doing burn-off s.

Thumbs up to Carina of the Orana Region Filipino Australian Association. It would be hard to find a more generous and warm-hearted person.

Thumbs up to Marc at Orana Property Maintenance who I found in the Dubbo Photo News. Marc fixed a problem in my shower – great work and customer service. He phoned a week later to check everything was okay, too.

Thumbs up to the great bloke who went out of his way and bought two pillows for the homeless person in the street to rest his head on.

Thumbs up to Dubbo Police officers who attended an emergency recently in West Dubbo. You had a job to do and were very compassionate and supportive whilst doing what was required.

I can’t recall all the officers’ names; “Jonesy”, thank-you for the support and checking in after our loss, and thankyou to the off-duty officer who came to assist. Thank-you also to Jarryd for your role, and to all those involved. We sincerely appreciated the compassion, care and support you all provided. Thumbs

Up also to Sophie and the Ambulance professionals who attended and did their very best. We found comfort in knowing you tried so hard. Thank-you from the depths of our hearts. We are blessed to have outstanding first responders in our Police, Ambulance and Medical professionals.

We will, we will, ROCK YOU!

MACQUARIE Conservatorium, Dubbo, is presenting a week of afternoon workshops between Monday, July 3 and Friday, July 7 for vocalists and instrument players who want to play in rock bands.

“Our first Rock School holiday workshop was a great success last year, so we are thrilled to run this workshop again for local youth in the upcoming July school holidays,” Macquarie Conservatorium’s Director Vivienne Winther said.

Participants will fine-tune their rock band skills with the expert guidance of a great team of experienced local band musicians and teachers. The team includes wellknown local band musician and song-writer Clinton Hoy, and bass player James Collingridge, who is also a Macquarie Conservatorium teacher.

“It’s a great opportunity for the many young people out there who are interested in playing together in bands,” Mr Collingridge said.

The workshop will be held at Macquarie Conservatorium, corner of Darling and Bultje streets, Dubbo, where’s there’s plenty of room for bands to rock.

Participants need experience playing one of the following rock band instruments: electric guitar, electric bass guitar, drum-kit, keyboard; or have singing as their main focus. Participants can be at varying standards from elementary to more advanced on their chosen instrument, but it is important to note this workshop is not for beginners.

Songwriting is a big part of the workshop, with bands encouraged and mentored to write their own songs. Another feature of Rock School is working with a professional sound system and developing stage performance skills.

“We’ll be partnering with SOMAD, Dubbo’s peak body for live and original music, to give these young band players hands-on experience with a professional sound system,” Ms Winther said.

We welcome your photos via email for publication. Please send each photo as a high-resolution jpeg image – at least 1MB per photo. Don’t let your Operating System/Windows/ iOS/ phone etc downsize the image before emailing because these images are usually too small to print.

“Kids can come into the workshop as an individual and we will match them into a band, or if they already have their own band organised, they can stay together in that band. And we’re also happy to welcome back any of the players from last year’s workshop to have another go!”

Participants will give a showcase performance for family and friends at Macquarie Conservatorium at the end of the workshop.

The Conservatorium is also offering some Rock School scholarships for indigenous students and for female students. Anyone in-

terested in being considered for a scholarship can indicate that on their registration form.

Young musicians should register for Rock School now – registrations close on Friday, June 16,

so don’t delay!

Visit the Conservatorium’s website www.macqcon.org.au for more info and to register online for the workshop. What a great way to spend the school holidays.

1980 308 Imperial V8 Dino Ferrari

For sports car-buff and local businessman, Bob Ware, his classic red 1980 308 Imperial V8 Dino Ferrari, was an impulse buy.

A classic motoring aficionado, his purchase 40 years ago, was the very essence of  love at first sight… sort of!

“I was going to buy a TR7 (Triumph), and then I spotted it in Sydney, and I thought, ‘bugger it, I’ll buy it instead,’” he explained.

“When I got it, it was perfect, A-1 condition, it had always been garaged, it hasn’t got a spot of rust, as Ferrari’s usually have, and it was only a couple of years’ old,” he added.

Far from being a locked-away trophy vehicle, Bob’s business interests in outback NSW, ensured the classic car got a good work-out on country roads.

“I was doing a lot of travelling, I had a resort at Lightning Ridge, the Motor Village, which I’d taken over at the time.

“I also had interests in Sydney, and I used to motor down in it in great time, I did that trip plenty of times and it ran like a bird on the open road,” he recalled.

Featuring four twin-barrel Webers (carburettors)  and a twin ignition, he also added Ferrari Racing Rims,

requiring width modifications to the back mud-guards to the bodywork. The car also became a bit of a star for a number of years when his work took him to the glamorous holiday resorts in south-east Queensland.

“I had a sign-writer, who put gold lettering on the back mudguards and done a stack of other stuff to it, and it used to feature on the Beach Girl Quests,” he explained.

“We’d put it on the sand as far it would go and photograph the contestants sitting in it, and I’d take it to car shows as well,” he said proudly.

No comfy luxury ride by modern

standards, he said the 308 is a classic example of the Italian love of a car dedicated to one single purpose. “It’s a speed car, it’s meant for speed, but I still enjoy driving it around, although with the road rules, its racing days are probably now over,”

Young Doctors of tomorrow

Dubbo South Primary School ‘Young Doctors’ visited the School of Rural Health in Dubbo as part of their Malpa’s Young Doctors for Life program.

During their visit to the School of Rural Health, they learnt about diabetes from third year medical student Alex Hormann and School of Rural Health staff.

The fun interactive session ran for about 40 minutes and was delivered through multiple hands-on activities, including mini health checks and the opportunity to work with some

of the 3D models in our world-class anatomy teaching lab.

Malpa’s Young Doctors for Life is a culturally derived, grass roots approach to train Aboriginal and nonAboriginal children, 9–12-year-olds, to become Young Doctors, to empower children to take control of their health destiny and help shape the future in their family and community. Malpa is actively supported by the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association, the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine.

What’s your favourite game to play? Soccer nets!

Do you play soccer at the weekend too? Yes for Westside Green. Westside is the Best side because that’s why we’re awesome. Have you kicked any goals? Yes!

Lots!

Are you a good player? Yes, I go hard against them. I kick the ball over the person and then I keep running with it, then I run straight with it and then I get a goal. Also, I get very puffed out. I go superhard, I kick the ball off people.

Do mum and dad stand on the sideline to cheer you on? No, my mum’s the coach! She’s a good coach. I think I do training on Tuesdays. Mum makes us do lots of running because we have to do running to get the ball.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? It would be “SuperFast” so I can get more goals.

Who’s your best friend? Harry and everyone on my team.

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? Nope

What’s your favourite game at daycare? I like going outside and playing with the balls.

Do you have a pet? We’re not allowed one because then we couldn’t go on holidays.

Who has the most rules at home, mum or dad? (laughs) Both.

What’s your favourite TV show?

Monster Truck Drivers

Have you ever lost a toy? I lost a favourite toy and it was a yo-yo and we didn’t know where it was and I looked in the car and all of sudden, ‘My Yo-Yo!’

How long was it missing for? One night.

Dubbo CBD Service Stations

The increase in car ownership in the 1960s brought with it a corresponding rise in the number of service stations to fuel and maintain them.

At its peak in the 1960s and 70s, Dubbo had 14 service stations within the boundaries of Macquarie, Cobra, Darling and Talbragar streets. It now has 14 service stations across the entire city, with only one remaining in the CBD.

The 14 servos located in the centre of town were mostly on corners, and some sites, though no longer operating, remain in place. One of the better-known stations was the Shell Roadhouse on the corner of Cobra and Macquarie streets which, during the 1980s, and interstate passenger coaches.

There was a BP servo on the site which is now Shooter Real Estate. This servo was demolished sometime in the 1980s to make way for the Blockbuster video store.

There was another one, brand unknown, across the road on the eastern side of Brisbane Street. It traded more recently as a Caltex and is now the Ampol Foodary.

Further along, on the corner of Cobra and Darling Street was a Caltex outlet, operated by Eric Patis from 1960 to 1969. The site is now occupied by a furniture store.

On the corner of Darling and Wingewarra Street was another servo, owners and brand unknown. This site remains largely intact and is now the location of Budget Car and Truck Rentals.

Most of the old servos had their own workshops and in-house mechanics to service, maintain and repair vehicles. Some also had ancillary services operating out of their work bays, like Dubbo Mowers and Chainsaws, which began its operations at the former Ampol station on the corner of Talbragar and Darling Street. This site is largely intact and currently unoccupied.

Harold Johnson operated a Shell servo on the corner of Talbragar and Brisbane streets from about 1965 until his retirement in the early 1980s. The closure of Harold’s servo coincided with the opening of the Shell Roadhouse, now the site of Raine and Horne Real Estate in Cobra Street.

Many of the old servos were known as

garages, because the main part of their business was vehicle repairs and maintenance, and fuel was more of a sideline. An example of this was Paull’s Garage located on the current site of the Dubbo Library on the corner of Talbragar and Macquarie streets.

Another fuel outlet further along Macquarie Street was Harold W. Taylor & Son, the local Ford dealership, which had bowsers on the footpath in front of its store. Taylor’s Ford dealership was established in 1934 and operated continuously on that site until the business changed hands and was relocated in 1996.

Further along, on the corner of Macquarie and Wingewarra streets, Roy and Keith Brown operated a Holden dealership which traded under the name Ezi Drive. This business also sold fuel from bowsers located on the corner; it traded on the site until the dealership changed hands and relocated to the corner of Darling and Bultje streets in 1971.

A bit further south on Macquarie Street was an Ampol service station operated for some time by Dick Whittington, who sold it to Roger and Diane Mackay in 1980. The Mackays ran it until 1984 when it was sold and demolished to make way for Dubbo Square.

In Bultje Street, behind the Milestone Hotel, was a Nissan dealership and Total service station operated by John McClennon in the 1960s. This site is now home to a driveBack up the hill in Bultje Street, behind station, brand unknown. This site remains largely intact and later became Beaurepaires Tyres and is now the premises of Goodyear Auto Care.

Further along Bultje Street on the corner of Brisbane Street was an Amoco service station. It replaced a sprawling old red-brick home, which Mrs Graham ran as a boarding house in the 1960s.

The Amoco servo was later demolished and

A couple of blocks north, on the corner of Brisbane and Church streets, was a Caltex servo, which operated there in the 1970s. This MP Mark Coulton.

The only remaining servo among those above is the Ampol Foodary.

Isabaelle off to Europe; to

THIS week the Dubbo Cycle Club, is farewelling gun rider, Isabelle Russell who is travelling to Sittard in the Netherlands for some top=shelf competition.

Isabelle is part of the Auscycling-supported team that will travel for nearly six weeks to race in and around Holland, Brussels in Belgium, and Germany, racing some of the best cyclists in the world for her age.

This will be a fantastic experience for Isabelle who is looking forward to the challenge. Once they arrive the athletes will immediately compete in Brussels in the fast wave of a gran fondo

(Italian: “big ride”) event to get accustomed to the climate and conditions.

The riders will race and compete at Watersely Talent Park during the week and around the region each Saturday and Sunday in an open race format.

It will be an action-packed stay that will have all the excitement and rigours of a professional cyclist routine. The Australian riders will undergo a very tough training schedule and race in a fiercely-competitive environment.

With fantastic performances in the National Junior Track Series, Junior 19 National Road Series and Citroen Bay Crits, surrounded by world-ranked riders, Isabelle has many great per-

formances to her name with 20 State medals and five national medals on her long list of successes.

Isabelle has prepared extremely well for her trip abroad, and it will not be without a couple of familiar faces. Both Kiera Will and Belinda Bailey, who race frequently with Isabelle, will also be in the Netherlands, and she hopes also to cross paths with Dubbo Cycle Club’s Haylee Fuller, who is racing in Belgium.

There is a growing list of young riders from Dubbo Cycle Club venturing overseas to take their racing careers to the next level, and it is hoped Isabelle will enjoy this valuable opportunity to race in the super competitive fields.

Isabelle is very excited to head-off to see not only some great racing, but also get a glimpse of the people and places in Europe during her time.

Supported by a loving family and an enthusiastic club, Isabelle will get much encouragement and well wishes from family and friends as we follow her racing with the world’s best.

Bulls regain Country title; and on the King’s weekend!

CENTRAL West Blue Bulls have regained their mantle as “kings of NSW Country Rugby Union”, following their brilliant 52-5 win over Central Coast at Tamworth on Sunday.

Blue Bulls Club Captain, Tim Beach, was ecstatic with the result.

“We’ve worked hard for months with the goal of reclaiming our crown; the Caldwell Cup is the ‘holy grail’ of Country Rugby,” he enthused.

“We won two years in a row, but Central Coast snatched it on the bell in last year’s final, so motivation was easy to fire-up on Sunday,” he added.

Tim missed the final after suffering a hamstring injury in Round One of the tournament, but was kitted-up for the final with Kangaroos teammates Caleb Cook, Jake Styles, and Will Michell. Former Roos Josh Tremain (Orange City) and Josh Bass (Emus) were also part of the championship winning team.

The Bulls won their preliminary matches against Mid-North Coast and Far North Coast on Saturday, before the emphatic victory over Central Coast.

Central West CEO, Jarrod Simpson, praised the commitment of players who have been travelling midweek and on Sunday’s for several months in the build-up to the Country Championships.

Skipper, Peter Fitzsimmons, was proud of the Bulls and the new faces who had helped them regain the Caldwell Cup but also had some con-

but another incredible tournament from you guys. We look forward to hopefully making it three straight decider meetings in 2024,” he said.

In other games, the Central West Women were thwarted by Hunter in their quest for four straight titles. After impressive wins on the first day, captain Mel Waterford and her

Astley Cup footie flashback to the golden, late 1970S…

FORMER Dubbo High student and Astley Cup historian, Wayne Garnsey, has provided Dubbo photo news with some priceless memories of the Astley Cup. In this issue, he shares

some images from Astley Cup teams of the late 1970s.

“I hope you can find space for the 1978 and 1979 league teams,” Wayne said.

“These were the last of the players coached by Ken Eggleton, who was in charge of the teams for 14 years.

“Eggo’s teams were undefeated in the Astley Cup for, I think, nine years until 1977 when we had a young and small team,” Wayne recalled.

“Proud to say we returned to winning ways against Bathurst and Orange High School teams in 1978 and

1979, to restore Ken’s proud record.”

Former Dubbo High and Dubbo College players, will gather at the Garden Hotel on Friday June 30, to reminisce of their glory days in the Astley Cup.

King’s Birthday and lawn bowls — what a combo!

Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’

NOT many of the 36 could remember having played any sport the last time the June Long Weekend was tagged as a King’s birthday, but all were delighted to have the opportunity to roll-up.

One of the teams that enjoyed the game, was Mick Strawhan, Ken Whittaker, and Col Dover, who had to chasedown Sue McCauley, Julie Brown, and Mel Giddings, who had the ‘wood’ on them during the first eight ends. After trailing by four, Mick, Ken and Col, upped the ante taking six of the last eight and, with a couple of five counts, raced away to a 23 to 14 win.

cord, no team has ever bowled a nine count for a single end. Last week, Doc Livingston, Allan Stratford, and Pete Sinclair, joined the select band to have attained a ”nine”, the maximum a team of triples can achieve.

It came on end five. Three bowlers with chests-out were praised by their opponents. Ron McCauley, Roger Sherwin, and Bryan O’Sullivan. Despite taking four ends each, the “Niners” held their opponents to just three on the second.

The 25-11 final score clinched the top award for the morning, making for a unique celebration.

Another happy team that powered to victory were Chris Castlehouse, Helene Emblen, and Col Cottee, who banked a couple of five counts on their way to 16 in the first section. Paul Wooldridge, Ian Humphries, and Phil Knight, only landed four. Honours were almost shared in the second eight, but the leaders took the game 22-11. Chris’s team we’re awarded second place for the day.

A case of “the wheels falling-off” besieged Ray Strawhan, Pete Bennison, and Pete Ruzans, in their game against Chris Strojny, Gaye Cottee, and Annette McMillan. With eight ends bowled, Pete and his side felt confident after leading 12-7. The second eight started with Chris finding form, Gaye tucking a bowl or too into the head, and Annette ensured their comeback.

Chris, Gaye and Annette closed-off each of the last eight, to keep their opponents from adding to their total. The final score was 22-12; 10 ends to six.

In a long-standing re-

The closest game was between Mary Perry, Ross Pharo, and Trish Gosper, against Leo Balstad, Col Teale, and Matt Quill. The former were chasing all the way to the last-end as Leo, Col, and Matt, had it under control. A couple of four counts underlined their apparent superiority, but then a triple on the 15th, Mary and co. gave them an opening. Mary, Ross, and Trish kept positive, and rolled up a four on the last to snatch a one shot win, 17 to 16; four ends each; four shots each.

It made for a top tussle between Shirley Marchant, John McKenzie, and Karen Greenhalge and Greg Brown, Vicki Hummel, and Gordon Scott. Karen’s side jumped ahead in the first four of the second eight, taking a six-shot lead, but a five count by their opponents almost destroyed all that good bowling as Greg, Vicki, and Gordon, found some mojo, and took a one-shot lead on the 14th. Karen urged her side to greater heights, levelling at 11 all on the 15th; a double on the last gave them a two shot win 13-11.

THE locals drawn from a wide area of the Central West did not win the Cup but shared the spoils of the Plate after a stirring weekend at Apex Oval.

Rams break 70 year drought

THE Dubbo Girls U16s basketball team has gone where no other local team has been since the sport started in the Royal Theatre and on the riverbank and Showgrounds courts in the late 1950s.

Dubbo Rams Junior

Coordinator Claire Bynon was rapt.

“Our U16s have made history in Dubbo Basketball being the first women’s to win the Country Championships Premier Division!”

The girls fought back from a 40 point loss against Norths in the pre-

liminary rounds to book a place in the final with a nail-biting six point win over the same opponents. The grand final was just as tense!

Next week we will look at other Rams teams which competed in the Country Championships last weekend.
