I am a committee member, which means I will be busy during the Stampede making sure the races go ahead smoothly.
Have you even participated in the Stampede before?

Put on an event that is bigger, better and more fun than ever.
What else is on your bucket list to achieve for this year?
It probably won’t happen this year, but I’d like to be able to run another marathon at least one more time.

Molly’s standing TALL
By JENET STEWART
Last week Dubbo student Molly Croft attended the Stand Tall event in the Aware Super Theatre at Darling Harbour, Sydney. She didn’t just attend though… Molly was the opening speaker at the inspirational event.
The Stand Tall event is for secondary students, and brings a host of speakers together to arm students with the skills of resilience and strength to stand up to bullying. The event provides the keys to motivation, the power of perspective and the benefits of making good and wise decisions in your life.
Students find hope for the future at the event, a vital component to their mental wellbeing, and Molly was one powerful part of the hope that students can aspire towards in the years to come.
Other speakers included Timomatic (performer, singer, and dancer), Nicho Hynes (rugby league footballer with Cronul- la Sharks), Derek Rabelo (a blind big-wave surfer and author who was the first blind person to ride life-threatening monster waves at Pipeline in Hawaii,) Michael Crossland (cancer survivor and author) and many more who left audiences totally wowed.
Some 10,000 students attended the event and an astonishing 100,000 tuned-in online. MC for the event Liv Phyland – a passionate health, and wellbeing advocate for youth – introduced Molly to the huge crowd. Molly is a two-time survivor of osteosarcoma bone-cancer, and her message was clear: she encouraged young people to not be defined by their circumstances. “I just told them my story, I know sometimes my story is a little bit confronting, but I tried to let them see that I’m just the same as them, a sixteen-year-old girl. When I spoke, I didn’t have any notes, I know my story and just stood there and talked,” Molly explained.
Molly spoke for 15 minutes which included her journey with the Tie Dye Project (which she co-founded with Australian netballer Amy Parmenter) and last year bought in an enormous $500,000. To top off this achievement, and in the wake of the awareness the Tie Dye Project has created, the NSW Government has now recognised the need for more funding and research into sarcoma by allocating two million dollars.
Last weekend Molly was invited by the Dubbo Rhinos Rugby Club to speak to and inspire players with her effervescence and captivating positivity. A fundraiser was also held at the Westside Hotel on Saturday by the Rhinos to raise funds for the Tie Dye Project, and 25 specially designed jumpers were placed up for auction after the game.
We congratulate Molly on her amazing achievements and her speaking gig in Sydney, which we are sure is only the beginning of big things for her. Her positive outlook on life and her infectious, happy, disposition are almost synonymous with this young inspirational 16-year-old Dubbo girl. Congratulations Molly!

The iconic Collie Hotel is up for sale!
By JENET STEWART
On a road generally less travelled – and not too far from Dubbo city – is the now-iconic Collie Hotel.
It’s been a quiet little pub to visit over the years but since COVID it’s taken on a particularly new lease of life. Thanks to social media, its stardom has bought people in their droves to the small rural community of Collie, on the Oxley Highway, and the hotel.
Owners of the hotel Emily Taylor and Tom Hancock purchased the business in 2016. Emily grew up between Coonamble and Baradine and Tom in Blayney. “When we arrived, locals told us that you are not truly a local until you have been here for 20 years,” Emily laughed.
Tom was spray contracting at the time and Emily was running a childcare centre in Coonamble. They both wanted a change from their lifestyle and thought the Collie Hotel would be a fun business venture.
Since purchasing the hotel, Emily and Tom have completed several renovations. “Bathrooms, kitchen, bar, accommodation, and the bistro. They haven’t been drastic changes because we didn’t want to lose the charm the hotel had, but rather have just updated everything,” Emily said.
COVID hit most businesses, including the Collie Hotel, really hard. “We had been shut down with COVID for the second time and needed to drive some business to the hotel. We always wanted to make Collie a destination and leveraged our social media with all the spare time we had with the shutdown,” Tom said.
And leverage they did with a massive following on social media, millions of video views, thousands of likes on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. “I think we were very lucky with our timing… everyone was at home with not much to do and plenty of extra time,” Emily explained.
The TikTok videos are all their own material, “based on real life experiences with patrons that come into the hotel. We have had a lot of characters that have come in over the years. It has really changed our business. We now have people that can buy merchandise online and feel a part of the community without having to head here themselves. Social media has bought a lot of people here that didn’t know we existed before, but I think COVID has been another big reason with so many more people travelling the country rather than heading overseas. One of our locals owns Marketing Directive, and Meg and her team have been the powerhouse behind our website for us to move merchandise online,” Emily said.
When Emily and Tom came to Collie, they had a five-year plan, that has extended out to almost seven years, so they thought it was time to move on. “We love the area so will hopefully try and stay around here. As for what’s next we will have to wait and see,” Emily conceded.
The Collie Hotel is listed to sell for $2,200,000. It’s less than an hour’s drive from Dubbo and a great place to visit for a weekend.

On top of the WORLD!
For fans of the hit Channel Nine reality TV show, ‘The Summit, and particularly those living in Dubbo, it was a reality show win like no other to see local man, Isaac Compton finish on top.
Dubbo Photo News caught up with Isaac to find out more about his experience. As told to YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY • • •
Why the Summit and not a singing show?
Singing shows weren’t something that I really wanted to be known for. I enjoy singing but I don’t think I can make a professional career out of it (laughs). The Summit’s new, and it was one out of 14 to get a share of a million dollars. I liked those odds.
How did you get picked for the show?
You had to apply, and they contact you and then there’s a whole process; inter- view after interview, psych tests (well, you’ve got 14 people put in a high-pressure situation, they have to make sure you’re not completely insane), then you
meet the producers, via skype or zoom and if they like you, then you get through to the show.
You really portrayed a nice guy in the show, how was it for you, cutting the bridge?
You’ve got to think all the way back at the start. We’re 14 strangers and I’m a massive Survivor fan, so this was my way of playing Survivor, I guess. When we were on that side, making that decision, there was seven of us and I looked around and you could see that no-one wanted to cut the bridge.
I was like, we’re in a game, I’ll do it. It sucks that we had to do it, and Stephen is possibly one of the loveliest people on the planet, and it was probably a good decision to get rid of him at the start because he’s nicer than me (laughs).
I think we were under the impression that we’d only lose people at checkpoints, then when we lost him, we were like oh, anyone could go at any time. Reality check. It lit a fire up everyone. How did you tell your mum about your win?
She got a phone call. We were told we were allowed to tell our close family members. Mum was a part of the show
SAVE ON TAX
as well, so Mum got to write letters in and got a phone call on Day 13 and was already privy to how far I’d got, then the day I came off the show I FaceTimed her. My stepdad was really sick at the time so they were in hospital and my youngest brother, and his partner were all there, so when I FaceTimed her, I said, put the phone where I can tell you all something. They were all over the moon then I said, alright, you people are the only four people on the planet I’ve told.
I’ve got six siblings but the other five didn’t know and I didn’t tell my father because in our family he’s the world’s biggest gossiper, but I also wanted everyone to find out on their own and let it be a surprise for them. Do you stay in touch with everyone from the show?
We’ve got a group chat and a Whatsapp and pretty much everyone’s stayed in touch. What’s next for you?
I’m going to have a little break but with this comes great opportunities, and I’m flying interstate for a lot of music work and people are reaching out for some public speaking to tell my story and experiences. I recently spoke at a function
about personal challenges with mental health and things I did on the show, and that was an experience I can tell you. I’ve not done a great deal of public speaking, but I’d be interested in more in the future. If I can make a change to someone’s life for the better, that would be great.
NAIDOC Week is fast approaching, can you share your thoughts about the Elders?
They’re the foundation that we stand on. They’ve laid the past before us so we can exist the way that we exist today, and they’re an integral part of our community but not just the community, the journey that we’re allowed to take and have taken before.
Is Alex your new best friend?
I talk to Alex every day since we left the show. He’s an amazing friend. He’s a good bloke and he is funny as. I’d love to do some work with him in the future, whether that be TV or radio…
Will you be performing in Dubbo any time soon?
The next time I’m in Dubbo performing is Derby Day at the Pastoral Hotel. It’s going to be massive.

Orange cafe owner, Nick Gleeson and business partner
Jatin Singh have launched a new coffee brand, Kite Coffee, roasted in-house at the popular Factory Espresso cafe in Orange.
Country coffee roaster flying high
Orange cafe owner Nick Gleeson’s newly launched coffee brand, Kite Coffee, is roasted right there on-site but his brew can now be found in a growing number of cafes across country NSW.
It was in 2016 that Nick Gleeson, his wife Ruby and their two young children left the hustle of the city behind and embarked on a new life in Orange. Taking over the then four-year-old cafe, Factory Espresso, the couple found themselves well and truly in the deep end, having no hospitality experience between them, nor having ever run their own business.
It was certainly a rocky start, Mr Gleeson said, with many people not expecting them to last more than a few months.
But hard work and perseverance paid off and today the cafe is a bustling dining destination, popular with visitors and a local favourite. It’s even home to a thriving stand-up comedy scene as Mr Gleeson, who happens to be the brother of comedian Tom Gleeson, has brought out some of Australia’s best-known comics to perform in the cafe after hours.
But late last year, Mr Gleeson embarked on an ambitious expansion of his business. Investing in a state-of-the-art commercial coffee roaster, he launched his own coffee brand, Kite Coffee, named for the cafe’s location in Kite Street, Orange, a short walk from the city’s railway station.
It was no small investment, but the ability to have complete control of the production of their coffee has delivered in spades, Mr Gleeson said.
“You can really taste the difference in the quality,” Mr Gleeson said. “It’s roasted with more precision, control and accountability.
So, we’re roasting it, we’re cupping it, we’re tasting it and refining it.”
Heading up the roasting operation for Kite Coffee is Jatin Singh, who comes with 25 years of industry experience. Before making the move to Orange to establish Kite Coffee, Mr Singh ran his own Sydney roasting business supplying about 40–50 city cafes.
“Jatin and I have known each other for 25 years,” Mr Gleeson said. “It was just a matter of getting him out to Orange and once he was on the ground, we knew we could offer something special.”
Not wanting to skimp on the quality of their equipment, the business partners chose to invest in an American-made Loring S15 Roaster. As well as environmental and energysaving benefits, this machine allows them to have complete control over the end product, Mr Singh said.
“It has unparalleled control features,” he said. “We can manipulate the roast down to the most minute degree and then it is repeatable. It allows us to tailor different profiles and tailor different outputs to match what the customers want.”
If you find yourself passing through Orange you will soon get to see Kite Coffee’s roaster
in action, with plans to install a glass view wall between the dining room and coffee roaster But it is not just Factory Esspresso’s cafe customers that are tasting the difference.
Mr Gleeson said their coffee has attracted wholesale inquiries from cafes across central NSW.
Country cafe owners, he said, are keen to find a local coffee supplier, one that’s accountable and can deliver a quality product to exacting standards.
“Part of the concept for the relaunch of Factory was to launch Kite Coffee as a local supplier and be accountable to cafes; we’re on the ground as opposed to a phone call to Sydney,” Mr Gleeson said.
“So we are able to produce what we want in the cafe and, on the wholesale side, we can tailor those things for what other cafes want for their customers, so it’s exciting!”
The wholesale side of the business is an area ripe for growth, Mr Gleeson believes, as there are few options for quality coffee, roasted right here in this region.
“We’ve had a great retail response since we’ve put Kite Coffee on and quite a few wholesale responses as well. We believe that will grow as people understand what we’re doing here, so we are confident that we are offering something different and unique to whatever else is out there.”

Working to better his family’s future
By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY
SOLOMON Island dad Philix Nina arrived in Australia for the first time in 2021 to start a new job at Fletcher International Exports.
For now, he leaves behind his wife and child, which for many Pacific Islanders is not uncommon as job opportunities are scarce and very competitive there, particularly for people with qualifications like a master’s degree.
“I have a degree from University of South Pacific in Fiji in Environmental Management and before I came to Australia I worked for two NGOs, Oxfam and World Vision, but that was on a contract basis, which means when the contracts end, so does the work,” Philix told Dubbo Photo News
He had never visited Australia be-
fore 2021 when he arrived to start a meat processing job on the Fletchers harvest floor, but by December he was asked to work in the administration department and now, is learning the ropes in the training department.
“I’m specifically learning about work cover so dealing with work related injuries. I didn’t know about these things when I started so I’m learning on the job and gaining experience from the training manager about how to recruit people, how to induct them and the paperwork that’s involved,” Philix said.
Philix is also frequently asked to help new Pacific Islanders arriving to adjust to life in Australia.
“Over 100 Pacific Islanders are employed at Fletchers, from Fiji, Tonga and the Solomons, and I help to support them to their new life
here and assist with things like their accommodation needs because the standard of living is very different here to back home,” he said.
Philix’s last trip home was at Christmas time, and he stays well connected with family in the Solomons using Whatsapp and Facebook messenger.
“I have had to miss my child’s first and second birthday which is not easy,” he explained.
Coming from an island nation he also misses his coastal hobby of fishing straight from the sea.
“I love to live along the coast because of fishing which I can’t do here obviously, so I find my favourite fish at DMC; reef fish and tuna. Back home, we get these fresh from the sea and put them straight on a fire to roast, we don’t put it in the fridge because the taste just goes away.”

Inquiry into vet shortages, is calling now for submissions
By DAVID DIXON
“TYRANNY of distance” is one of the major causes of the chronic shortage of veterinary services in the state’s West, a NSW Legislative Councillor believes.
This scarcity has led to increasing pressure on our local vets, who suffer from long hours, excessive work-related stress, and mental health issues, Shooters, Fishers, and Farmers Party Cr Mark Banasiak has said.
Recently appointed to head a parliamentary inquiry into the veterinary workforce shortage in NSW, he said that the committee will likely head out West for hearings on the issue.
With only two veterinary schools training the next generation of country vets in NSW – one at the University of Sydney, the other at CSU, Wagga Wagga – he considers there is no easy fix for the problem, which he believes is worse in the bush.
“I think so, there’s the tyranny
of distance in rural and regional areas that exacerbates the problem,” he said.
“Also in the country, there’s a lot of work involving large animals that a lot of vets aren’t interested in, and this makes travel times also far greater,” he added.
Lack of professional support, relatively poor monetary reward, the pressure of dealing with sick animals that owners invariably expect to be successfully treated, are some of the issues he believes will be canvassed in the submissions and hearings.
“I hope that sort of stuff comes out in the inquiry,” he said.
“We also want to know, not just what the problems are, but also investigate some possible solutions,” Cr Banasiak said.
Part of the problem, he suspects, may have to do with the exclusionary professional standards that the industry operates under.
“We’re looking for industry-led solutions, but there is a sense

that it is a ‘closed shop’, it is a very competitive field to get a look in on,” he said. “It’s a very expensive course to put yourself through, with a disproportionate HECS debt,” he said of the two current university offerings. With the issue seemingly affecting country areas greater than in metropolitan Sydney, he expects to be taking public hearings of his inquiry to the bush.
“We’ll try and come out – to get out in the country for some of the hearing days,” Cr Banasiak said. “We’d love to hold them in rural areas… we’ll just have to see what we get.”
The Upper House Portfolio Committee No. 4 – Regional NSW is now seeking submissions for its newly established inquiry into the veterinary workforce shortage in NSW.
The inquiry will investigate workforce shortages across all aspects of veterinary practice, including small and large animal practice, government, academia,

research, industry and pathology.
The inquiry was established following media coverage about burn-out in the veterinary profession. There are also reports of workforce shortages, and increased demands for veterinary care due to factors such as growing pet ownership.
“The committee would like to hear from vets, vet nurses, pet owners, farmers, industry and others about the factors that may be impacting access to veterinary care,” Cr Banasiak said.
“We are also interested in learning about issues which may impact on the veterinary workforce in Australia, including aspects of the current legislative and regulatory framework,” he added.
Submissions may be made via the committee’s website until Friday, July 21.
Further information about the inquiry, including the terms of reference is also available on the website.

"The Giants" to screen in Dubbo
By JENET STEWART
DUBBO will host a screening of the film “The Giants”, which explores the intertwined fates of trees and humans in a cinematic portrait of environmental folk hero and gay icon, Bob Brown who, over the years, has been an avid political promoter of all things green.
The film draws on Mr Brown’s lifetime of activism, from the Franklin River to the Tarkine wilderness. “The Giants” ignites an urgent conversation about the right of forests to exist and challenges the audience to write the next chapter.
The hidden life of the forest is brought to life by cameras rigged high in the tree canopy, and point cloud animation generated from 3D tree scans which allows for virtual modelling based on the data points captured. The result is stunning immersive animation. Plus thought-provoking insights by the likes of David Suzuki and Merlin Sheldrake.
“The Giants” will be presented at Reading Cinemas, Dubbo, for one night only on Wednesday, July 19 at 6.30pm. Five dollars from the purchase of each ticket will be donated to Macquarie River care groups to purchase tube stock of trees and shrubs for planting along the Macquarie River, to assist in riverbank revegetation and prevention of soil erosion.
The Dubbo Environmental Group Inc. will be the distributor of the funds to organisations who are currently engaged in the Macquarie River care.
Tickets can be purchased through 123 Tix at: www.123tix.com.au/ events/39092/the-giants

HomeGround: The River System the way Kate sees it
By JENET STEWART
KATE Kenworthy’s solo art exhibition ‘Can You Hear What I See?’ opened at the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) in late May. Her body of work explores the river systems of the Dubbo region and the Burrendong Dam. Kate has a visual disability, but don’t let that discourage you: she relies heavily on her ability to feel and hear to compensate for her poor eyesight. “I don’t try to paint the visual scene as such,” she says of her technique. “Instead, I want to change the visual to a painting that shows strong, bold movement
to demonstrate the sound and the texture of the world as I experience it through my own senses.”
Kate applied for the opportunity to have her own exhibition space through WPCC’s HomeGround program which supports emerging regional artists living and/or practising in the Central West region of NSW to focus and expand their skills under the guidance of a professional gallery and curatorial team. HomeGround is sponsored by Wingewarra Dental, and Kate was also given an additional grant through Orana Arts to assist in purchasing her art materials for the exhibition.
“I’d like to thank Dr Bruce Gray at Wingewarra Dental for supporting artists and Orana Arts for giving me the opportunity to be taken seriously,” Ms Kenworthy said. “This is so important when starting out as an artist and these sponsors have opened doors for and given me the opportunities that are very hard to come by. I also wanted to thank the staff at the WPCC for the amazing opportunity to use a space in such a well-respected gallery.”
On opening night well over 70 people attended the exhibition, which is travelling from Sydney and Canberra. Well-renowned
artist Tim Miller also attended opening night. Wellington-based Ms Kenworthy spoke about her art and the importance of water throughout her life having grown up with the Bell River running behind her home. Guests had the opportunity to ask questions about her techniques and her experiences leading her to changing careers.
“I couldn’t believe it when my application to be selected for the HomeGround program was successful. A lot of people apply and the fact that people in the art world believed in me still amazes me. People have said to me that
it is lovely to have a hobby in my art. I hope now that people will understand this isn’t a hobby. It is my career, and it is anything but a hobby. It is a lot of hard work – it is very expensive to pursue using professional resources and is also extremely rewarding,” Ms Kenworthy explained.
Since the opening of her exhibition, she has won a Hanging Art Highly Commended prize in the Dunedoo Unlimited exhibition with a painting she named ‘Hector'.
Kate Kenworthy’s exhibition is open until July 31 at WPCC art space.

SHAVE IT OFF fundraiser for the Western Cancer Centre Foundation
By JENET STEWART
CENTRAL West Working Horse Association (CWWHA) Team Penning and Arena Sorting held another fabulous fundraising event over the King’s Birthday long weekend at the Geurie Racecourse Recreation Ground with around 150 riders enjoying the beautiful winter sunshine on horseback.
Four hundred and forty team penning and arena sorting runs were held over two days, split into three age divisions to make for some fierce but friendly competition, penning and sorting cattle.
“Several new teams tried their hand at the sport over the weekend and came away very happy, already vowing to come again,” event organisers said.
Saturday night of the event saw a fundraiser for Western Cancer Centre Foundation organised by the Chase family. The Chases – Amity and Steve with their four boys Harry, Fergus, Toby and Patrick – vowed to shave their heads with an online GoFundMe page catching a lot of interest leading into the weekend. “We decided to shave our heads as a family to honour
a good friend lost in 2021, and others we know currently battling cancer. We chose the Western Cancer Centre Foundation as the charity to support keeping it local. The centre is an amazing facility, treating so many Western patients and the foundation assists the centre with funding, education, and support to families,” Amity explained.
On the night the right to shave Steve and choose the shave style was auctioned off, boosting the total even higher. The honours for Steve’s shave were won by Don Foran and family, and a syndicate headed by Greg Woodlock. This auction was added to the proceeds of a CWWHA raffle, and generous sponsors donations. The GoFundMe fundraiser event over the long weekend made an phenomenal $17,384, approximately, which will help to make a big difference to the foundation and their plight to improve cancer care and quality of life for people living with cancer, and their families throughout Western NSW. CWWHA would like to add that they are also long term supporters of Macquarie Homestay, having donated $3700 to the accommodation for patients last year.

An Australian planning expert has warned that smaller regional areas shouldn’t be seen as a quick fix for the housing problems plaguing major cities.
Dr Laura Crommelin, Senior Lecturer in City Planning at the School of Built Environment at the University of NSW, said the growing affordability crisis in metropolitan cities is driving an increased interest in nonmetropolitan areas, but she believes non-metropolitan areas need long-term planning to accommodate an increased population.
“Cities attract new residents due to the range of job opportunities they offer. Smaller regional areas can’t solve the housing issues of major cities in the shortterm. Without proper planning, regional areas risk replicating urban problems like housing affordability,” Dr Crommelin said. Amid the pandemic and the rise of remote work, several regions have experienced a population surge, particularly coastal regions attracting sea-changers with affordable and spacious housing.
“Some city dwellers can afford a standalone dwelling in a regional area. Areas within a reasonable distance from cities are becoming popular among those who commute to the city a few times per week,” Dr Crommelin noted. She added that rapid growth can stress regional rental markets,
and platforms like Airbnb can reduce housing supply.
Dr Crommelin led a study by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI), which revealed that residents are worried about growth impacting their city’s lifestyle and straining essential services.
“Rapid growth can strain existing services, especially health and education. Policymakers need to anticipate this to ensure infrastructure development supports growth,” Dr Crommelin stated.
She emphasised the need for strategic, proactive planning informed by local knowledge. A primary focus should be improving regional labour markets to attract and retain population, especially in sectors facing worker shortages.
“Options for employment and career development are typically seen as a downside of relocating.
“There is a role for regional universities to help create local graduates and support their career development in non-metropolitan areas,” Dr Crommelin suggested.
She also advocated for longterm strategies that recognise the diverse needs of different regions, ensuring that regional growth maintains the sense of community that attracts people to these areas in the first place.

Thanks to Perfectly Sorted, I received two offers within 4 days. I also had a number of interested parties and received such great feedback during inspections.
It was the best investment I made to get Ali and the team from Perfectly Sorted to enhance the feel and value of my property.

Hi Ali & Team,
I just wanted to let you know that we have sold our farm at 1445 Lue Road. The purchasers actually had a look at the home within the first 2 weeks after your styling in mid-August. The only time they looked at the house was when it was styled so we’re sure that made a difference! Thanks so much again. We just wanted to let you know of another sale success that certainly included Perfectly Sorted.

“FRED” –1927 Buick Standard Roadster
BY JENET STEWART
Recently at Dubbo Show, Dubbo local Geoff Wise presented his 1927 Buick Standard Roadster. The amazing Buick has an amazing backstory dating back nearly a century.
K.W.K (Fred) Wise bought the Buick in 1927 and used it for all his travels until his death in 1960, aged 84.
Following Fred’s death, his son Allan relocated the car to his property “Kooringle” at Gilgandra, using it as a farm vehicle.
When Allan and his wife Joyce sold the property, the car moved into Gilgandra town with them. Following Allan’s death in 1987, Joyce stored
with patients and customers. My FootDr offers great accessibility for Dubbo and surrounding communities being positioned in the heart of Orana Mall shopping precinct since 2017. “It allows us to make it as easy as possible for our patients and customers to utilise both our clinical and retail services,” My FootDr Podiatrist Bevan Charlton-White explained.
the car on relatives’ properties in the Gilgandra district.
In 2021 Geoff Wise, son of Allan and Joyce Wise, brought the car back to Dubbo. Restoration to date has been completed outstandingly by Colin Frost, President of Dubbo Antique Automotive Club, and numerous Dubbo businesses have offered
their areas of specialisation to the Buick along with many generous people who willingly offered support, encouragement, and guidance. Geoff Wise did his own timberwork, Robert Williams provided electroplating, and the engine was restored in Victoria. As the final stage of the restoration, upholstery work has now commenced on the Buick.

girlsBuninyong on flight path to the future
Buninyong Public School sent 10 very lucky girls to attend the ‘Women in Aviation’ day at the Royal Flying Doctor Service on Friday, June 16.
The girls experienced the world of aviation, from boarder security to air traffic control. Students also got the opportunity to speak with and participate in activities alongside industry professionals and gained a clearer insight into the world of aviation.
Perhaps we’ll see future flight attendants and Flying Doctors as a result. What a fabulous opportunity!

Dubbo Cycle Club's Mini-Tour draws riders from around the region
nual Mini-Tour, with the inclusion of the Western Division Time Trial Championships, over the weekend.
In ideal riding conditions, competitors came together from across the Western Region to meet-up at South Geurie to contest some exciting racing. The Mini Tour is a three-stage event starting with an 18.8km Time Trial, followed by a 21km Handicap Road race event and, lastly, a 21km graded scratch road race.
In the Western Division Championship Time Trial, Aaron Seaman was the only rider to average over 42km/ hr, and won the event in the A Grade Division with Nicholas Barrett from Bathurst just 40 seconds off-the-pace
and, in third place, was Greg Millburn from Dubbo.
In B Grade, Simone Grounds was the winner completing the distance in 29:17 minutes with an average speed of 38km/hr, taking the Western Division title. Second was Luca Telfer just a minute behind Simone, and third was Dubbo Rider, Chris Richards. Bathurst riders took the top six places in C Grade, with Darren Fenton taking the win in a fine ride ahead of Rob Stephen in second, and Toireasa Gallagher in third place. In D Grade, Gavin Hillier from Orange took the win ahead of Catherine Adams from Bathurst in second, with Henry Bagnell from Mudgee taking third, while riding in the Dubbo colours.
Xavier Bland from Orange was in
red-hot form on the bike, taking-out both the A Grade road races and the overall points score for the Mini Tour.
Dubbo rider Tim Hines was a very close second in the Mini Tour points tally in a countback with third-place going to the very strong Aaron Seaman from the Tolland Cycle Club.
In B Grade, Cameron Crump from Orange finished a clear winner, with his performance proving he is in exceptional form.
John Curly from Dubbo also raced exceptionally well, proving that lots of training can enable riders to ride well-above expectations. In third place for B Grade, was Lachlan Crump from Orange in a consistent performance. For C Grade, Rob Stephen from Bathurst was the eventual winner with Darren Fenton from
Bathurst also in second place. Third Place went to Jenna Gallagher in an outstanding performance for the young lady from Bathurst, proving she is an exceptionally-talented rider and one to watch at future events.
For D Grade, Gavin Hillier from Orange was the winner and, in second and third places, Bathurst riders, David Hyland and Catherine Adams, filled the placings to cap-off a remarkably successful day. In the Fondo social ride, Sid Pickering, Cooper Farr, Will Tanswell, Heather Ticehurst, and Georgia Farr, enjoyed scenic rides together.
A huge “thank-you” to all the riders who attended, many traveling from around the region. “Thank-you” also to the wonderful volunteers who made the day a resounding success.

44 bowlers roll up - literally - despite the early chill on Sunday
Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’
A FANTASTIC total of 44 bowlers rolled-up last week in the winter chill for Sunday Bowls.
As the games go underway, Chris Castlehouse, Di Hildebrand, and Mel Giddings, were forced to do all the “chasing” in their game against Mick (“birthday boy”) Strawhan, Chris Strojny, and Col Dover. They won five of the first eight ends, only to be thwarted by a six-shot count by Col’s team on end four. After the turnaround, though, they mounted an onslaught, getting to a three-shot lead with four ends to play.
Then Mick, Chris, and Col, squared the game on the 14th and, with a triple-decker on the 16th, took the win, 15 to 13.
In a tough pairs game, Ray Strawhan and Graham Ross turned around the first eight deficit, to take Roger Sherwin and Bryan O’Sullivan to the cleaners. The latter held a three-shot lead, but faltered in the second eight, winning only two ends. Ray and Graham with their increasing mojo, added11 shots to five for the second eight, which resulted in a solid 16-13 win.
A simple single, the result of the first eight ends, left Col Cot-
tee, Vicki Hummel, and visiting bowler, G Cohen, trailing Mary Perry, Garry Huggins, and John Cole by 12. They added eight after the break, but not enough to chase down Col and Co. who chalked-up a comfortable 18-9 win.
There was then heartbreak for Pat Sherwin, Allan Stratford, and Karen Greenhalge who, after a good first eight ends, had nine shots. However, Daphne Dunbar, Doc Livingston, and Ruby Stockings, managed to get 10! A quintuplet on the fourth helped, and then when they rolled in another 10 after the break, they secured a 20-14 victory.
Rob Pfeiffer, Ian Humphries, and Leo Balstad in their game, led Di Collen, Paul Wooldridge, and Pete Ruzans, by 8-5 at the turnaround, with a five-count and five further end wins, leading them home 24-13.
Helene Emblen, Gaye Cottee, and Trish Gosper, also combined very well to have 14 on their card for their first eight ends. They didn’t give up their advantage, though, going-on to record a very comfy 22 to eight win over Sue Armstrong, Ken Whittaker, and Tod O’Dea.
In a lop-sided game, Frank Armstrong and Al Andriske, took on Julie Brown and Annette Mc-
Millan. Frank and Al were on the ball as they took the first half with a lead of nine as Julie and Annette couldn’t find their feet. Despite a triple-decker on the 13th, they couldn’t stop Frank and Al claiming their game by 19-6.
Shirley Marchant, Col Teale, and Paul Goodstat, won six of the first eight to lead Ros Joseph, Pete Bennison, and Phil Knight by 13-4. The momentum remained, despite a five to close the gap and it finished 24-8. That fine effort was enough to earn Shirley, Gaye, and Paul, the game of the morning award.

Swimming with Ducks; for Legacy
By GEOFF MANN
Photos by MEL POCKNALL
VETERAN’S swimming clubs from across the eastern seaboard gathered at the RSL Pool over the long weekend for the first-ever “King’s Long Weekend Carnival”!
Dubbo Ducks have hosted this annual fundraising event for Legacy for the past few years; known as the Queen’s Legacy Relay.
Ducks Life Member, Reg Ferguson, as well as a couple of participants, laughed that they could remember when they last had a King’s Birthday holiday!
The fun-filled Carnival wrapped up on Sunday with a “Swingin’ Sixties” party and presentation at the RSL Club.

ALTHOUGH there was a slightly smaller flock at the RSL Pool on Sunday, those who did, flapped their wings and paddled in what was described as “style”!
In the first race of the morning the “Silver Fox”, Norm Bahr touched first in the 50-metre Freestyle ahead of Roger MacKay, Janine Gardiner, Rob Dickerson, with Euan Gardiner fifth.
The two-times 25-metre Breast/Freestyle second heat, caused all kinds of confusion with one Ducks’ team flapping around swimming the wrong stroke! The guilty Duck took the good natured pecks and quacking from the rest of the flock with a smile,
making sure he swam the following races in the correct discipline!
In the final, John Wherritt and Mark Scullard placed, first despite John not having his ‘fast goggles on’! David Sparkes and Bill Greenwood came second. The third team was Norm Bahr, followed by “Good afternoon”, Ron Everett.
The 50-metre Backstroke saw Peter Hargreaves break his time and Marg Ross earn the top spot, followed by Roger Mackay and Rob Dickerson.
The final race was a 25-metre Freestyle event with John Wherrit and Mark Scullard’s times, placing them equal first. Peter Hargreaves second, Tom Gray third, and Euan Gardiner fourth.

Rhinos win hearts with Tie Dye match
By GEOFF MANN
Photos by MEL POCKNALL
WHILST the result didn’t go the way of the Rhinos, their being part of a special day to raise much-needed funds and awareness for cancer sufferers, made them winners in the real sense of the word.
The Rhinos made their recent match against Mudgee, a special raising day – supporting the “Tie Dye Project” that dyes and sells thousands of products every year to raise money for sarcoma (cancer) related projects – Coach, Doug Sandry, explained.
The Rhinos wore specially-made jumpers for the event, as well auctioning items including balls painted by local First Nations artist, Alan Shillingsworth.
“Our club worked with Maddie and (Tie Dye Project founder) Molly and their parents John and Ange, in a number of activities leading into and on the day,” Doug said.
“To have raised over $20,000 for this amazing charity is almost unbelievable. It was our privilege to support our own Molly Croft and the Kids Cancer project she works so tirelessly for,” Doug added. While the event was a hug success, this did not extend to the playing fields for the Rhino team.
“The players wore the jumpers with pride and played their hearts out, as the Mudgee Wombats maintained their position at the top of the ladder,” Doug said.
“We let in four tries in the first half, and it was always going to be a struggle from there. The ‘Batties’ are a tough, experienced team but as always, I was very proud of the efforts of our team,” Doug said.
He added that, the Rhinos have always been the first, to put their hand-up in support of worth community causes.

By GEOFF MANN
THE Outback Dragons travelled to Kununurra for the 55 km Ord River paddle.
They were taken by bus at daylight to the starting point and competed against five other Dragon Boat crews from around Australia.
According to Dragons’ Publicity Officer Chris Robinson it was a long, hot and challenging venture.
“But they paddled the 55km in one day! Farmers, accountants, retirees, business owners, nurses from Trangie, Narromine and Dubbo worked the paddles in a huge team effort.”

Former Kangaroo proud of his Bulls
By GEOFF MANN
EARL Harrison earned his reputation as a deadly tackling five-eighth, who played his club football for Gilgandra who proved to be the perfect link in the famous Australian league team’s historic 1963 Kangaroos tour of England and France.
Last weekend, the retired farmer from Gulargambone, was sideline to watch grandsons Jock and Charlie Lawry, going around with the Nyngan Bulls.
It was a proud moment for the tough former standoff and his daughter Tamara Lawry, who captured a lovely sequence of pictures as one brother threw the line out to his sibling.
In the game, Nyngan Bulls downed Gular/ Gilgandra Galahs 19-7.
Tamara had a little tear on her cheek as she shared the proud moment that will see Dad sign a special commemorative Kangaroos guernsey from the 1963 tour that featured such stars as Reg
Gasnier, Johnny Raper, Ken Thornett, and Ian Walsh.
“Dad is signing an Australian guernsey he swapped with an English player on his 1963 tour,” Tamara said. They swapped guernseys back then and this man –perhaps Arthur Summons or Noel Kelly, not sure of his name – donated it to Western Suburbs.
Someone is travelling up here with the guernsey for him to sign,” she added. Indeed, a moment to remember; beautifully captured.
Dubbo Roos to play Country
THE local rugby club is well represented amongst a host of Central West players named in Country teams.
Five Dubbo Kangaroos have been named in the Country Corellas following outstanding performances at the recent Country Championships in Tamworth.
Halves Janalee Conroy and Lakeisha Hull, winger Lala Lautami, brilliant back Alahna Ryan and terrier-like flanker Jean Littlewood have earned their selection in the Corellas amongst a host of Central West women including Captain Mel Waterford and Bulldogs teammate Sarah Coleman and hooker Holly Jones (Orange).
The Blue Bulls men have seven players in the Country Cockatoos squad following their decisive win in the Caldwell Cup. The Blue Bulls captain Peter Fitzsimmons is joined by Bathurst Bulldogs teammates Joel Harper and Adam Plummer. Forbes prop Charlie French, Parkes half Mahe Fangupo, Cowra lock Damien Michael and Orange City’s lion-hearted Josh Tremain complete the selections while Charlie Friend from Walgett Rams is also in the squad.

Lobb turns defense into attack to ignite United
By GEOFF MANN
Photos by MEL POCKNALL
FORMER NPL Premiership-winning Captain, Jamie Lobb is known as a key defender for Macquarie United but, on Saturday night, the experienced campaigner stepped into the centres. It was a gutsy move by the coaching staff, but one which paid rich dividends. The tall cen-
tre headed two first-half goals and converted a penalty as the young team continued their rise up the Burmac Western Western Premier League Football ladder. MUFC’s 7-1 victory puts them on equal points with Dubbo Bulls, their opponents on Friday night. The other Dubbo team, Orana Spurs suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss against Panorama in Bathurst.

WITH the exciting buzz of their high-performance engines, Dubbo Kart Club hosted The Endurance Karting Association (TEKA) Championships last weekend.
This event cements the city’s enduring attraction for the karting community, Dubbo Kart Club President, Frank Cross, said.
“Dubbo is a favourite destination for the 100-plus drivers and support crew who came from all points in pursuit of the prestigious blue ‘#1’ plate and bragging rights over a drink and a (chicken) schnitty,” Mr Cross said.
“Endurance karting is different to the more well-known sprint-karting; racing is over many hours, across multiple days with multiple drivers and teams of friends, family or both,” he added.
According to the veteran karting and motor sports enthusiast, TEKA is arguably the fastest and most exciting endurance series in the country, using strictly controlled twin Briggs and Stratton Animal engines that can reach speeds of 100 kmh.
“Reigning state title-holders ‘Maverick Kart #58’ made a return for this event, defending the title won last year.
:”In the main championship ‘Dy-
namite #27’ went in as outright leaders in the series, but were by no means favorites, with anyone of the top 10 teams in the championship capable of winning the state title and taking the lead.”
In thanking everyone who was involved, Frank acknowledged the volunteers and sponsors who enabled such a major event to succeed.
“TEKA is proud to have many amazing people within the club that assist with sponsorship for each event.
“Penrite and the Roylance Tractor Replacements team in car #47, were along to repeat their efforts in the snow hit round at Lithgow in May,” he said.
Teams arrived for practice on Friday and lined-up on the grid for the first race on Saturday at 12:30pm.
The constant hum of the karts was heard for the next four hours, interrupted only occasionally for pit stops and driver swaps.
For four hours, drivers across a range of classes battle each other, the track and their concentration and backed up for another four and a half-stretch on Sunday morning.
If you wish to see more about The Endurance Karting Association or get involved, go to their website at: www.teka.com.au.
