Applications open now for council Community Grant programs

LOCAL groups after funds for worthwhile projects have now been invited to submit applications for Dubbo Regional Council’s (DRC) community grants programs.

The Community Services Fund (CSF) supports projects and programs that deliver social, cultural, or environmental benefits.

Meanwhile, the Community Assistance Fund (CAF), previously called the “Financial Assistance Program”, seeks to ease the financial burden of not-forprofit organisations that contribute to creating or enhancing the well-being and amenity of our communities.

Both grant programs aim to help a range of groups secure resources and to deliver valued activities and services to the community, DRC’s Manager of Community Services Christy

White said.

“I encourage community groups to look at potential activities and services they can have funded during the first round allocations for each of the grants programs for 2023/2024,” she explained.

“Each of these funds have very set criteria and applicants are invited to visit the website to look at the particular criteria for each grant to work out which is most suited to their organisation or activity,” Ms White added.

Applications are now open and close on Monday, July 31, with eligible applications to be reviewed by an internal panel and considered by council at its September 2023 meeting.

For more information on either of the grants, contact council’s Community, Culture and Places Executive Support Team on 6801 4000.

For the Community Services Fund there is a total of $101,874.74 available for specific projects and programs in this first round allocation.

Applications can be made through the Smarty Grants online link available on Council’s website at: tinyurl.com/dubgrant1

For the Community Assistance Fund there is a total of $18,358 available in this first round allocation.

DRY JULY? WHY PARTICIPATE IN

It’s that time of the year again for those of us that choose to have a whole month without any alcoholic drinks involved. Lots of water, tea, coffee, and substitute drinks to get you through those social outings without being influenced to break your Dry July pledge.

But what are the real benefits behind going dry in July?

Firstly, you can raise some much-needed funds to improve the comfort, care and wellbeing of cancer patients, their families, and carers. But also – and very importantly – you’ll experience some really great health benefits, including an improvement in your mental health. You’ll feel a huge sense of achievement whilst helping someone else in need. Your skin will be glowing with radiant health, you’ll

have a much better sleep each night and, best of all, a clear head and more energy to achieve great things at work, home, and during special time with your family.

Funds raised through the Dry July campaign are distributed to local and national cancer support organisations across Australia. These organisations assist people affected by cancer and provide help with day-to-day life including appoint-

ments; guidance from a specialist nurse; connection to an informative voice; access to therapy programs or a bed close to treatment.

If you haven’t signed up already, well, today’s the day. You could also enter a team of friends to help you achieve your goals. For more information check out the Dry July website at https://www.dryjuly. com/about

Welcome to Ling Ling Thai, Dubbo’s newest fine dining Thai restaurant

Welcome to Ling Ling Thai, Dubbo’s newest fine dining Thai restaurant. We are a small family team of Thai chefs and foodies who love to eat, love flavour and are determined to bring true, authentic, Thai flavours and dishes to Dubbo so people can experience the rich culture and flavours of Thailand and our hometown, Chiang Mai, without having to travel to Sydney or get on an aeroplane.

We bring farm-to-table, utilising local suppliers and produce whenever we can. We are determined not to use any frozen products, so wherever possible all our ingredients are fresh and each dish is prepared in true Thai tradition in-house and to the highest quality by our Thai chefs. Including all our entrees, like our vegetable spring rolls, money bags and satay chicken skewers.

Traditionally, true Thai cuisine is prepared just

before eating, using only the freshest ingredients. It is packed full of flavours and very often a lot of heat from all the chillies. We have toned this down a little for Dubbo, but we are always happy to make it as hot as our customers like it. Thai food is a delicate balance of sour, sweet and salty. Sour from ingredients such as tamarind, lemon and kaffir lime leaves. Sweet from ingredients like palms sugar and coconut milk or cream. And salty from the unique blend of special Thai sauces, which is unique to each Thai chef.

Another part of our mission has been to create a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere for our customers to unwind and enjoy our recipes, along with a wine, beer, or a cocktail or two.

In step with our recipes, we aimed to create a décor that was the best quality, new, modern and a little bit funky. Just like our monkey theme which follows on from our name “Ling Ling” which means “two monkeys” in Thai. Not to take

ourselves too seriously, but to focus mainly on making the best Thai dishes.

One of the most difficult aspects to creating the freshest and best Thai dishes in a rural city like Dubbo, has been to find reliable sources of the freshest and unique ingredients used in true Thai cuisine, such as fresh lime leaves; Thai basil; Thai mint; star anise; and fresh coriander, amongst others. But perhaps the biggest challenge has been to find a reliable source of the best and freshest seafood which is widely used in Thai cuisine. Thankfully, we have been able to partner with some amazing local family businesses who specialise in bringing these things all the way to Dubbo.

Important work to secure grain exports

FOR an 18-year-old just starting out in his working life, Hayden Marshall has landed on his feet at Fletcher International Exports.

“I finished Year 12 and graduated then I did a stint with another company before coming to Fletchers about six months ago,” Hayden said.

Now an integral member of a team at the grain handling terminal on Yarrandale Road, Hayden builds headboards which are fitted into the many containers to protect the tons of grain inside during their transport by train to port and onto ships for export around the world.

“It’s to stop the grain from coming out the doors because they go on the train; and say one of the doors came open, all the grain would spill out everywhere.

“Headboarding is part of prepping the containers. We build the headboards on site with cardboard and bars, then we put them in the

containers; so we tape the container up and put the headboard in, cut them, slide them and zip-tie them, and they’re good to go.”

Hayden works beside a stand of towering silos capable of holding between 3000 to 10,000 tons of grain. Containers are brought to the silos to receive their load of grain via large chutes, but only after Hayden and his colleagues have prepped them.

The former Dubbo College Senior Campus student joined Fletchers with an open mind, keen and ready to do whatever was needed, and describes his work colleagues as ‘a good bunch of blokes’.

“I’d recommend working here for anyone leaving school. It’s good money, especially for a young person just fresh out of school. We’re outside all day. The mornings can be a bit fresh but when it warms up it’s good.

“There’s plenty of work, especially when harvest starts – it gets a lot busier,” Hayden said.

Three good reasons to hire students

ARE you looking for new employees but hesitant to hire students?

Here are three good reasons to consider them for your team.

1. You can fill temporary job vacancies

Students are usually flexible and available to work during holidays when business is booming. For this reason, they’re ideal for casual and seasonal work, or if you need somebody to temporarily cover an employee on parental leave. They’re also more likely to accept evening and weekend shifts.

2. You help train the next generation

You offer students the opportunity to learn within your company. In certain industries and with particular tasks, you can teach recruits the basics of the trade and help them develop a

strong work ethic. These motivated young people will become qualified workers capable of taking on full-time, permanent jobs upon graduation. Give them a chance; they’ll repay you in time.

3. You encourage knowledge sharing

Students often know more about new technologies than long-time employees. You can build mentorship connections between recruits and existing employees to encourage each to share their know-how and gain critical knowledge. This type of expertise exchange can propel your company into the future. Are you interested in hiring students? Do you do freelance work and find it difficult to determine your rate of pay? Are you afraid of charging too much or too little? Here are a few tips.

Do research

The “perfect” rate won’t magically appear on a silver platter. In determining how much to charge your clients, you need to analyse and compare current market prices for similar services. You can get a good idea of the going rate by visiting various websites, posting in discussion

Unlike salaried employees, freelancers must pay for certain business expenses out of pocket. For example, costs like insurance, travel, retirement savings, equipment and rent should be factored into your rate.

Perform calculations

First, decide how much money you want to bring in each month. Then, add this amount to your monthly business expens-

Once you determine the total you need to earn per month, calculate your hourly rate by dividing this total by the number of hours you work in a month. For example, if you want to charge per document, you must estimate the number of hours required to complete the job and multiply it by your hourly rate.

All that’s left to do is promote your services, write quotes and sign contracts.

Little “physie” stars sparkle at pre-school presentation

Confidence is one of the great attributes we can instil in our children, and it’s never too early to start.

That’s the wonderful aim of the Orana Physical Culture Club, who recently held their end of term presentation and awards night – a “sparkling” success for a group of light-dancing young ladies.

Performing and appearing on stage in the hybrid dance-exercise format known as physical culture does wonders for girls and women at any stage of life, Committee Member Margaret Lynch believes.

“This was a little group of pre-schoolers called ‘Sparkles’. It’s taught by one of our group of volunteer teachers Sophie Anderson and assistants Haidyn Campbell and Rebecca Anderson… just a little performance put on for their family,” Margaret explained.

“It’s something to work towards. It’s fun, exercise, and dance; it’s empowering, helps their self-esteem, confidence, and exercise, right through to all ages,” she added.

The form, often known informally as “physie” in Australia, combines elements of yoga, rhythmic gymnastics, and dance, with a focus on good posture for all women, from pre-schoolers to seniors.

“Physical culture is a national sport, it’s a little bit of jazz ballet, gymnastics, traditional ballet, all mixed-in together.

“It’s a very good activity and, many people probably don’t realise, there’s competitions all around the country. It’s a very Australian sport,” Margaret added.

A lot of the success of the growing club, she explains, is down to the selfless work of the myriad volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to the students.

“This is our sixth year and we have about six teachers and also assistant teachers, and over 100 members, from pre-schoolers to retirees,” Margaret said.

“These teachers give their time four terms a year, training every week with rehearsals and performances… it’s highly-commendable what they do,” she added.

The results, she said, were on fine display among the young ladies achieving and awarded, on their recent presentation night.

“This really gives them an opportunity to build their self-esteem and confidence; it’s amazing to see their smiles, after they have performed.

“It’s no easy thing, it takes a lot of gumption for these little girls to face an audience,” she added.

With members aged from four up to 72, the system follows a nationally-accredited syllabus under the Bjelke-Petersen School of Physical Culture (BJP), Club President Nick Hubbard explained.

“It helps with their confidence, their fitness, their core strength. All different body movements are a part of physical culture,” Nick said.

“I’ve got two daughters Polly and Stella and my wife Kristy, who are all involved, and they just love it,” Nick concluded.

WELLINGTON NEWS

Music teacher Michelle and The Tin Roof Big Band warm festival crowd

LOCAL singer Michelle O’Callaghan performs in one of the few dedicated jazz bands in the Central West.

Starring at the Orange Winter Jazz Festival recently, her colleagues in The Tin Roof Big Band all perform for a very good cause.

“We rehearse in a tin shed at Wellington, that’s where the name comes from. It’s actually a band hall, and we perform in a big band style,” she said.

“It’s beautiful what they do… we have people from Wellington, Orange, Parkes, Dubbo, and all the money we make goes into the Wellington Town Band program,” she added.

A music teacher at Dubbo College, her favourite jazz artists are luminaries such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Latin stars of last century.

“I like the cheekiness of it –we’re a medium-sized ensemble

that makes beautiful music, and we do instrumentals as well,” she said.

“I like the freedom you get as a performer. You get to interpret the

Orana Country Music Association Muster at Wellington Bowling Club

music, there’s no right or wrong way to sing it, and it’s a lot of fun,” she said.

Working seven years in the Central West, Michelle likes the re-

gion and its people.

“Our following is largely from Dubbo and we perform around town, at the Dubbo Regional Theatre, and performing at the

DREAM Festival,” she said. “I love Dubbo… it’s a great place with a fantastic lifestyle.”

The Orange Winter Jazz Festival also featured another local band with a unique Australian flavour: Riley and Ah-See is a First Nations hip-hop band from Dubbo.

The Orange Winter Jazz Festival, in its second offering in 2023, warmed up Orange over the June Long Weekend, just as the winter weather started to get really cool.

“Last year’s inaugural festival was a huge success, showcasing Orange as the perfect location for a destination music festival,” Festival Director Amy Curl said.

“Pair exceptional music offerings with Orange’s bustling food and wine scene, boutique accommodation and shopping, visitors to the Festival are spoilt for choice.

“We’ve got some pretty spectacular musicians, and our fans are normally quite happy to travel to see us,” Michelle enthused.

THUMBS UP!

Thumbs up to Charlotte and Mitch at Officeworks for your assistance with finding the right accessories and helping with my photo books. Thank you for your patience. You were very, very helpful.

Thumbs up to the staff at Monster Signs in North Dubbo. We recently had some work done with them and were very pleased with the friendly and helpful way the staff advised us. The work carried out was excellent.

Thumbs up to the girl at AXXIS who sorted out the problem with my mobile phone.

Thumbs up to Chris on the front counter at Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) – a very pleasant fellow. I needed a JP in a hurry and called in to the council where he was quick to oblige. Wonderful service provided by him and the DRC.

Thumbs up to Aaron from Macquarie Appliance Service for quick, thorough and professional service on our dishwasher.

Thumbs up to the DRTCC and all involved in the Cat In The Hat stage show. A very entertaining show, most enjoyable.

Thumbs up to the extended Boundary Road which seems to be a better way to get to the Sheraton Road schools from the south Dubbo area. We started using it a lot more last term.

Schools shine with Eisteddfod success

imately 30 students from Trangie Central School travelled to Dubbo Christian School to compete in the City of Dubbo Eisteddfod.

The Junior Verse Speaking Choir (Years 3/4) recited ‘The Visitor’ by Ian Serraillier and ‘The Sea’ by James Reeves.

The Senior Verse Speaking Choir (Years 5/6) recited ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle’ by A. B. Paterson and ‘Don’t Lean Back on Your Chair, Claire’.

It was a new experience for most of the students. The choir’s conductor and teacher, Ms Helen Hedger, was very proud of the students’ performances on the day and felt students did their very best reciting in unison, with character roles, too.

Students repeated their performances at a whole-school assembly to mark the end of semester. Well done students!

Five Stages of Purchasing a Property

Buying a property involves a series of stages.

1 – Preliminary research

The first stage of buying will see you asking lots of questions, gauging things like what’s going on in the market, the locations you prefer, what properties are available and the budget you’re likely to have.

2 – Exploring your options

Stage 2 sees you get a little more serious. You‘ve narrowed down where you’d like to buy and have a list of features you’d like the property to have. You also have a pretty good understanding of the local market.

3 – Lining up the ducks

You will have finance pre-approval and your deposit is in the bank. You are attending open homes, have a clear vision of the type of property that will suit you and you are in a position to make an offer.

4 – Making an offer

At this point, you have found ‘the one’ and you are ready to submit an offer. When the vendor receives this offer, they can choose to accept it, reject it, or put in a counter-offer and negotiate for a higher price.

5 – Finalisation and settlement

Following offer and acceptance and then exchange of contracts, the clock begins ticking down to settlement, which is the day the property officially changes hands. During this period, you will be arranging insurance, removalists, changing your address and finalising your mortgage.

ALICE GEMMELL: REINSW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER FINALIST

Alice Gemmell had been working in the hospitality industry for several years after leaving school. She moved to Brisbane at the age of 19 and was interviewed for a position at a real estate agency but, through fear, she declined the interview but always wondered what a career in real estate would have been like.

Fast forward to 2023, Alice’s career has changed somewhat. “In 2019 I was feeling ready to take a jump into something new that felt right to me after trying a few different admin type jobs that didn't work out.

I saw a property management position at Peter Milling Real Estate in Dubbo and, to be honest, at that point had no idea about what property management really entailed. But I did my research on the position and decided to take the plunge. I ended up

starting as a property manager in March 2019 for Peter Milling. I was at Peter Milling for just over 12 months before starting at SJ Shooter Real Estate in the same position. Later a position became available at SJ Shooter for a business development manager and, at the time, I was about to finish up my full-time work at SJ Shooter and go onto study something different. But I knew I really wanted to give this position a go. So I changed my plans, put my hand up, and thankfully my bosses gave me the opportunity to try it out,” Alice explained.

This week Alice was revealed as one of the Real Estate Institute of NSW (REINSW) finalists for the Business Development Manager Award. “It’s an exciting moment for me in my career and shows me I am on the right track. I think I was going to be

happy regardless of being selected as a finalist or not. The entry I submitted really allowed me to reflect on what I have learned, achieved and where to put my focus on with future goals,” Alice said.

Managing Director of SJ Shooter Laura Shooter provided Alice with all the tools and encouragement to enter the awards.

“Laura has a good understanding of submitting awards and encouraged me to do so for my own personal achievements as a business development manager, so I forged ahead,” Alice told Dubbo Photo News. “I was required to enter a written submission following certain criteria. Submissions are then judged by a panel of judges who select the finalists and the winners.” Alice’s role at SJ Shooter is a busy one. She spends most days secur-

ing new business for the Property Management Department. “I am dealing with investors looking for a property manager to manage their investment property, so taking that responsibility seriously on behalf of your client, listening to what they need, taking the time to build trust with them, and knowing how to serve individual clients differently is paramount to me. It’s also about my professional development… I wanted to take what knowledge and service I could provide to the next level, so I took the time to put a lot of work into my development and learning,” Alice said.

The REINSW Awards for Excellence will be held in Sydney at the Star Casino on September 7. We wish Alice every success with the awards and future achievements.

How to configure and style your Airbnb for greatest profit

When setting up your BNB, two of the most important decisions you will need to make are:

1. The configuration of your bedding and;

2. How to style your BNB to enhance your bookings and revenue.

When aiming for the best return, it is crucial to get these two right as they will greatly impact the number of bookings you will receive, the nightly rate you can charge, and therefore the amount of revenue your property can make.

When visitors go online to book a home, they will typically find themselves on one of the major Online Travel Agencies (OTA’s) such as Airbnb, Stayz or Booking.com. Your property will then be in direct competition with all the others, so setting up your BNB correctly from the start can make the world of difference in the number of bookings you receive.

BEDDING CONFIGURATION:

Let start with the choice of how to configure your bedding. You will first need to know your market. Is your property more suitable for families, for a work crew, professional individuals, or all three? The risk being, if you configure your property poorly against your target traveller, you may be turning away a large number of bookings.

EXAMPLE 1: A simple 2-bedroom property

on the fringe of the CBD may be a great weekender for a small family coming to town on a budget. If you were to set the home up with a queen bed and a bunk room, with the intention of hosting small families then that’s great. However, you may just be turning away those groups of two couples, who would need two queens as a minimum or even small work crews who typically book longer stays and fill up your midweek vacancies.

EXAMPLE 2: On the other hand, if you were setting up a large 5-bedroom home, placing bunk beds in the 5th room would be a great way to attract families. This would then open the opportunity for a larger group or even two families staying together to book your property. In this case, you would be able to charge significantly more per night, due to more people being able to stay as well as provide a better overall guest experience. This may also result in great reviews and therefore more future bookings.

Our suggestion is to do your research to understand all types of travellers who are likely to book your home before settling on a bedding configuration. They may differ depending on your property’s location, size, style and quality. If your property is already set up a certain way, still do your research as the cost of a new bed may be worth thousands of dollars more in future bookings.

STYLING YOUR PROPERTY

In a similar way of thinking to the above, the choices you make in styling your home is even more important. When a guest is searching for a property online you only have a few seconds to grab their interest. If your property is poorly styled the guest is likely to flick straight past your listing due to the poor first impressions and the risk of having a bad accommodation experience. Most guests are looking for properties that look clean, tidy, comfortable and warm (easy on the eye).

If you are looking to attract a large number of bookings, we suggest keeping things neutral as a way of catering to the broader range of guests. While you may be tempted to set up your home in your particular style, you also may be accidently turning away many different types of guests.

A common example of this would be a styling with bright and loud colour scheme. This may be appealing to a certain type of guest, however, is most likely to be a deterrent to many others.

We recommend choosing a simple and neutral colour palette when styling your Airbnb and keeping things minimalistic. Definitely add colour to your space with art, cushions and throw blankets. Not only will these stand out in photos but also help to create a warm and

inviting space, without overloading it. When guests are scrolling through your photos on Airbnb, you want the room to look and feel naturally bright and inviting, so try not to settle on too many dark colours either. We suggest avoiding patterned doona covers as they can draw attention away from everything else the room has to offer.

As mentioned before, first impressions are crucial to sparking interest and gaining bookings. By keeping to a simple colour palette, adding soft furnishings, keeping things minimalistic and configuring your bedding to cater for the broader traveller, you have a much greater chance of drawing in bookings and increasing your revenue. It is big job getting your property ready but may pay off well if it’s done right.

Rugby league greats named in Astley Cup Centenary sides

THE Dubbo High/Dubbo College 1923–2023 reunion for players and supporters of rugby league; was held on Saturday night, 1st July at the Garden Hotel. It was a great night for everyone with so much talent and great characters from so many eras, and three best-ever teams were also announced at the function.

The 1980-2000 team was picked based on performances when playing in the black-and-red. Players had to have played Astley Cup to qualify. It was also a great privilege to have the 1959 coach of Dubbo High, Ken Murray, and the 1952 captain of Dubbo High, Cliff Graham, present the jumpers to the players.

Yeo’s swansong, as Dunedoo’s Centenary party paddles-on

ALTHOUGH the official Centenary celebrations wrapped-up last weekend, the Dunedoo Swans and Swanettes, continued commemorating the club’s first century last Saturday, when the famous local league team hosted Gilgandra.

So inspiring was the reunion weekend, that legendary 2014 Premiership-Winning Coach, Tom Yeo got the footy bug, and ran-out at five-eighth in their closely-fought men’s match, won by a Swan’s feather by the home team, 22-20.

The Swanettes faced no such uncertainties, again showing their class by winning 60-0. This week, Alexis Gallagher matched Captain Lauren Sullivan’s four-try effort from the previous weekend. Lauren halved her own tally, with six other Swanettes, also flying over the line.

Another pleasant day of Sundy Bowling at the RSL Sporties

Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’

BOWLERS enjoyed a day of pleasant weather at RSL Sporties on Sunday morning.

In an early match, Steve Kelly and Ruby Stockings were happy with their triple and quad, earning a lead of four in the first eight ends against Julie Brown and Pete Sinclair. That was where it ended! Jolie and Pete switched-on after the break. Not only did they nullify the lead, they restricted their scoring to just a single end and a single shot.

Steve and Ruby were beside themselves as Julie and Pete kept scoring end-after-end, to take the game 20 to 10, 11 ends to five.

Roger Sherwin and Gordon Scott were also doing quite well, until John Kennedy and Col Cottee rolled-in a five count on the eighth that gave them a lead of four. Again, the tide turned as John and Col gained control, scoring 10 shots, boosting them into an unshakeable lead and win – 22 to 12, 10 ends to six.

When a team gets a six count on an end, the others find it hard to deal with. Mick Strawhan, Frank, Armstrong, and Al Andriske were the culprit; Ron McCauley, Chris Strojny, and Karen Greenhalge were the recipients! They were not able to force a reply and struggled through the second half as Mick, Frank, and Al used the multi-shot

scoring system to take a winning lead, 21 shots to 11.

Doc Livingston, Rob Pfeiffer, and Mel Giddings, surprised everyone, including themselves after the first eight ends. Chris Castlehouse, Eric Satchell, and Graham Ross, could not believe all their efforts resulted in just a score of one as they rolled into the second half. Doc, Rob, and Mel continued to annoy the efforts of Graham’s side, leaving them with four against their nine to take the chocolates 24 to five and, also, the Bowlers of the Morning award.

Ricky See found his way back to Sundy bowls, and teamed with Ken Whittaker and Sue McCauley. Working well together,

they chalked-up three triple shot counts to turn with a six-shot buffer. The only joy for Mary Perry, Therese Gaio, and Ian Humphries, came on the last end when they rolled home five big ones; Ricky and his lot however scored another 10 shots to clinch victory 22-15.

Leo Balstad, Gaye Cottee, and John Cole, were reasonably happy with their start against Helene Emblen, Ray Strawhan, and Greg Brown, leading 8-7 at the turnaround. Putting all their efforts to the fore, unfortunately, John’s side faltered, adding only three to their card while Helene, Ray, and Greg, kept scoring, winning five of the ends and adding nine shots. Final score, 16-11.

The game-of-the-round was between Shirley Marchant, Allan Stratford, and Mike Twohill, against Sue Armstrong, Pete Bennison, and Pete Ruzans. A bright start for Shirley, Allan, and Mike, kept Pete’s side at bay and gave them a 10-7 lead. During the second eight, Pete’s side jumped ahead on end 10, conceded it again on the next, and then went back in front on end 13. Scores were level by 14, then scored a triple on 15 to jump further ahead.

Three shots in front with one end to play and holding two shots, Pete had the game in his hands but, unfortunately, muddled his final bowl, leaving Shirley, Allan, and Mike the 18-17 winners.

Fishies stage another fight-back against the unlucky Blue Raiders

FOR the second time this season, the Group XI co-leaders, CYMS, came from behind to fight-off a determined Macquarie Raiders side.

The Raiders were 10-0 up in the first quarter after tries to centre EJ Fernando, followed by a spectacular leap from winger, Charlie Kempston. It took almost until half-time, before CYMS bumbled their way to the tryline, but it proved only a temporary respite, as the Blue Raiders were again first-in after the break.

When the Fishies finally found some structure on the back of replacement five-eighth, Claude Gordon, the points began to flow. Appropriately, the injury-prone pivot scored the match-sealer – CYMS getting home by 24-14.

This week, the Raiders will be looking to bounceback against Forbes, while CYMS are off to Wellington, and Parkes looks to retain a top-two spot when they battle the desperate Nyngan Tigers.

New team swimming event, Swim League, comes to Dubbo

IT’S a new form of team swimming competition, and it’s coming to Dubbo in July.

Swim League (Swimming NSW) is organising an event in the Western Region for the first time, and organisers hope it will have a significant impact.

The Gala Day is happening at the Dubbo RSL on Sunday, July 16 from 12 pm and it’s promising to be a really fun event.

Swim League has been interact-

ing with swimmers for six years, and for the past three years, it has been operating throughout NSW.

By incorporating team dynamics into swimming, Swim League has created a fast-paced event that caters to the next generation of swimmers.

Swim League is unlike any other swim meet you’ve ever seen. It’s a points-based competition where teams face off against each other in an exciting 60-minute event in

the aquatic arena.

Swim League is open to swimmers of all ages and skill levels. Each swimmer participates in between three and five races, 35 races per competition. The team that earns the most points by the end of the match, is declared the winner. The match structure options depend on how many people register, including Round Robin, One versus One, Gala Day, and Series formats.

The absence of timing creates a socially-engaging and inclusive environment where participants can focus on scoring points and having fun without feeling pressured.

The Swim League program is designed with a special algorithm that ensures each swimmer has a minimum and maximum number of swims, ensuring everyone has a role to play on their team.

A fun team-based event that can

be completed in just one hour!

 The focus is on great racing, not times;

 The event is a new product to a targeted demographic;

 The event is supported by technology developed by Swimming NSW;

 Organisers believe in inclusivity by welcoming able and para-participants.

 There are no qualifying times.

Western bowlers best in the State despite weather-changed venue

RAIN earlier this month meant plans for the Combined High Schools (CHS) trials had to be changed at the last minute.

Fortunately, Dubbo is well covered as far as lawn bowls facilities are concerned. A quick call

from Club Dubbo Bowls Manager to the RSL North Dubbo Sporties and 80 bowlers representing every education region across the State were rolling-up on the synthetic greens.

The change did not phase our Western Warriors, who successfully defended the title they won last year.

Dubbo Roos women and men, earn spots in Country squads

DUBBO rugby is well-represented amongst a host of Ladies and Mens Central West rugby players recently players named in Country teams.

en have been pencilled-in for the Country Corellas following outstanding performances at the recent Country Championships in Tamworth.

Lakeisha Hull; winger Lala Lautami; brilliant back Alahna Ryan; and terrier-like flanker Jean Littlewood, have all earned their selection in the

man and hooker Holly Jones (Orange).

The Blue Bulls men have seven players in the Country Cockatoos squad following their decisive win in the Caldwell Cup.

The Blue Bulls captain, Peter Fitzsimmons, is joined by Bathurst Bulldogs teammates Joel Harper and Adam Plummer. Forbes prop Charlie French, Parkes half Mahe Fangupo, Cowra lock Damien Michael and Orange City’s lion-hearted Josh Tremain complete the selections while Charlie Friend from Walgett Rams is also in the squad.

Dubbo was once again host of the some great karting sprint events, bringing karts all the way from the north coast to Bathurst, Orange, Gunnedah, Tamworth, and Forbes for a series of eight-lap races.

Dubbo Kart Club President, Frank Cross, said that conditions were perfect for the 114 karts and drivers to set some really fast times.

“We had classes from Novice, through Juniors to Seniors, flying around the track in modified two

and four-stroke karts.”

Coast-to-country karting with some flying times set!

The club is in a good space at the moment, and always welcomes new members, Frank emphasised.

“Anyone is welcome! Some new to the sport have been out to come and try days and been hooked,” he said.

It’s a great sport, friendly folk involved, and the opportunity to get the adrenaline going. The speeds are always accentuated by being just centimetres from the tarmac, so low chance of injuries,” Frank added.

There are two more major events later this month and, in August, culminating in the Gold Cup.
