Remembering little lives lost too soon
By JEN COWLEY
T
wenty years ago, the loss of a pregnancy or the death of an infant was still something of a hidden tragedy. Women mostly suffered quietly and families bore their grief in private, the depth of the loss going largely unacknowledged by wider society. This is despite the fact that each year in Australia, some 400,000 women will experience pregnancy or infant loss. Around 1750 babies are stillborn every year in this country and more than 100,000 women and their partners will experience miscarriage. Fortunately, attitudes have shifted markedly over the past two decades and the National Association for Loss and Grief (NALAG) has played a significant part in bringing about that change towards recognising just how devastating and potentially lifelong the grief can be. It’s almost 20 years since NALAG, which has its headquarters here in Dubbo, established its Baby Remembrance Garden in recognition of this unique loss and a special place where little lives lost too soon can be remembered. Each year, on International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Day, NALAG hosts a special ceremony at its Dubbo centre,
to which those affected by infant loss are invited to take part, and to place a specially engraved stone in the garden in memory of their little one. According to long-time grief support counsellor and former NALAG CEO Trudy Hanson, the Baby Remembrance Garden was established to recognise the very real grief and suffering experienced by families that lose a child through stillbirth, infant death or miscarriage. “The loss of a developing or new baby pregnancy and infant loss can lead to intense and painful loss reactions, including strong feelings of sadness and grief,” says Trudy, who was at the helm of NALAG when the garden and annual ceremony were established. “Often, however, these emotions that are experienced are minimised or not well understood by family, friends or others in the community. “The journey of baby loss can be one of immense sorrow, but it is essential to remember that hope and healing can coexist,” Trudy explains. “Understanding the grieving process, seeking support, and honouring the baby’s memory can be vital steps towards finding solace.” The veteran counsellor says society
has a role to play in helping to bring the grief of pregnancy and infant loss out of the shadows. “Together, as a compassionate society, we can create an environment that supports those affected by baby loss and helps them navigate their path to healing. It’s important to let grieving parents and families know they are not alone. Countless others have walked this path, and there is support available to help them through this difficult time.” This weekend, NALAG invites parents, grandparents, families and others to join the Remembering the Babies Ceremony – a FREE event at which people are invited to have a stone engraved to place in the garden or take home with them. The ceremony will also join the international Wave of Light, in which candles are lit around the world in recognition of pregnancy and infant loss. What: Remembering the Babies Ceremony WHEN: 6-7:30pm - Sunday, October 15 WHERE: NALAG Centre or Loss and Grief, Welchman Street, Dubbo COST: FREE (includes light meal) For further information or to RSVP visit nalag.org.au or call on 68829222
This Sunday, October 15, those affected by infant and pregnancy loss are invited to attend the free annual ceremony to remember little lives lost too soon and to place a specially engraved stone in the Baby Remembrance Garden. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

LITTLE LIAM’S
BATTLE
October 12-18, 2023 Dubbo Photo News
where every dollar helps...
R
ecently, Matt Sumich and his wife Kathy received the devastating news that their youngest son Liam – just 11 months old – had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma cancer. Neuroblastoma cancer is an aggressive early childhood cancer, almost exclusively affecting children aged under five years old. Liam’s father Matt: “It started when Liam seemed to be sick and in pain for a month or so and not getting better. We initially assumed it was because he was teething and/or sick. After a series of doctors’ visits, phone consultations, then finally a video call to an after-hours paediatrician who noticed that Liam looked pale, they suggested we take him in for blood tests. After some blood tests, we received a call from a doctor who said we need to get Liam to John Hunter Hospital ASAP as his red blood cell counts were very low.” After three days of further testing the family were given the heartbreaking news that it was cancer, and likely to be Neuroblastoma. The aggressive cancer had already spread from a mass in his abdomen to Liam’s bones. To combat the cancer, Liam will begin a strong treatment plan consisting of chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell transplant, radiation to the primary tumour site, and immunotherapy. This plan will likely include five months in hospital, and stretch out to 16 months of treatment. This means the family faces extended time in hospital, unpaid leave from their jobs and also care for their older son Connor. The
family has a long struggle ahead, and is seeking assistance from the Dubbo community via ‘Liam’s Battle’ Go Fund Me account. Close friend Jason Jones shares: “Personally, I have never met anyone that has come close to the kindness of these two (Matt and Kathy),
who would go out of their way to help anyone else in need.” Now they need a little bit of help in return. Over $30,000 has been raised so far, and you can help the family by searching “Liam’s Battle” at GoFundMe.com

ant to look your best by utilising the latest technology? Then look to Laser Clinics Australia, Dubbo. The locally-owned franchise offers the best of both worlds: the top science in beauty enhancement without the issues and intrusiveness of surgery. “We offer cosmetic injectables, laser hair removal, advanced skin treatments and body sculpting in a clinical environment,” local franchisee Lee Potter explained. “We are very fortunate to have access to the technology and training that allows us to offer treatments like cool sculpting and BBL Hero to our regional community.” CoolSculpting destroys fat cells. It uses patented cooling technology to eliminate fat
cells by freezing them, and with little to no downtime. Over time your body naturally eliminates these fat cells permanently, providing noticeable and lasting results in the treated area. The area can be re-treated in 12 weeks if required. “We have seven qualified therapists, and a registered nurse, in our team at Dubbo,” Lee said. With skin damage increasingly a genuine concern for a lot of clients in our harsh climate, Laser Clinics Dubbo have now added BBL Hero to their clinic, Lee said. BBL Hero uses light energy to quickly and gently heat the upper layers of the skin. This heat is then absorbed by the targeted areas to stimulate
skin cells to regenerate. The gentle heating of the skin with “High Energy Rapid Output BroadBand Light” allows for the fast removal of pigmentation, sun-spots, facial vascular concerns. This treatment is fast, comfortable, and requires minimal downtime with results visible in one week. Affected as they were, like most other regional businesses by the COVID-19 lockdowns, the local store is currently enjoying a boom in trade in helping people to look their best. “We had a huge rush. Absolutely, after the pandemic, the industry as a whole was extremely busy with clients needing to resume their treatment programs,” Lee said.

Keeping fit crowd helping local charity, Leader Life, raise funds BEING fit and keeping healthy is a major focus for many of us, with a local gymnasium holding a special fundraiser this weekend to help kids in need. F45 Training Dubbo, is using their first half-decade celebrations for a very good cause, to help raise funds for local not-forprofit, Leader Life This group offers support children aged between five and 25 who are having a tough time; as well as older community members who are finding life difficult. Their vision is for: “All to lead a life of purpose, participation and potential, with no child left behind”. Owner of F45 in Brisbane St, Jed Hardiman has organised the fundraiser for this Sunday, October 15 to raise much-needed support for the group. “This fundraiser coincides with five years of F45, and we have already got some big sponsors on board,” Jed said. “I am super-passionate about promoting the importance of a healthy lifestyle, but equally as passionate about giving back where I can,” he added. He said this was his way of contributing something to the Dubbo community, who

ne of Australia’s foremost men’s choirs is on the road again celebrating their 110th anniversary, with Dubbo one of their top-stops along the way. The Sydney Male Choir are dropping by on the evening of Saturday, October 21 from 7pm at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre. The performance will be no dry collection of light opera, a Choir spokesperson revealed. “The group perform modern pop classics from Billy Joel, Joe Cocker, John Farnham, Queen, Credence Clear Rival, Broadway musicals, spirituals, and everything else through to the classics,” they said. He added that this iconic stalwart of the Sydney music and arts scene, will not be performing alone. “In our concert, we have the local
(ladies) choir ‘Cantando Sorelle’ and the Dubbo Christian School senior choir appearing with us and we are also providing a Master Class for them on the Thursday before the concert,” the spokesperson said. “There really will be something for everyone and you will get to experience what they like to call ‘goosebumps territory’, where the cascading harmonies of male voices transport you to a realm of musical joy that only a live performance by these guys can deliver,” they added. Last year, the choir was also invited to feature on the nationally televised program, Australia’s Got Talent, where a great performance of “You are so beautiful” and a Queen medley produced a rapturous reaction with the audience rocking in the aisles. “On The Road Again” tour will be a wonderful outpouring of music, laughter, and sheer entertainment as part of these celebrations. The group’s story started in tragic circumstances in 1913 when a promising violinist in inner city Petersham, Charlie Miller, had his violin career cut short by an industrial accident. Undaunted, and driven by his passion for music, he started this men’s chorus, the spokesperson said. “It is remarkable how they have adapted over the decades to changing musical tastes and preferences of their audiences. “They were regular live concert performers on ABC radio until the 1950’s,” they added. The students versus hospital staff charity cricket match will be a fierce but fun showdown. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED
By LANA EATHER
n 2022 the School of Rural Health Students and Dubbo Base Hospital staff joined forces (but not teams!) to fundraise for their major charity event in support of Macquarie Homestay for the first time. This year they are planning a bigger and better event. Medical and Publications Officer from the Medical Students Country Club Society Emily Joseph told Dubbo Photo News: “This cricket match isn't just about wickets and runs! Last year, during our inaugural year, we raised over $2000 for this charity. And we are now gearing up to make an even bigger impact.” The students versus hospital staff charity cricket match will be a fierce but fun showdown on Saturday, October 14, at Victoria Park Number 1 oval from 7pm. “The event is family-friendly. We've got something for everyone, whether
you’re a cricket fan, a foodie, or just looking for a great time with the local community. It’s not just a cricket match… it’s a celebration of us coming together for a wonderful cause.” The fun evening will include auctions, raffles, BBQ (including gluten-free and vegan options) and beverages. Macquarie Homestay offer affordable, low-cost accommodation for those seeking medical treatment in Dubbo, and rely on donations and fundraising to keep costs down. The funds raised from this event will go towards Macquarie Homestay’s new accommodation for patients having treatment at the Western Cancer Centre. The accommodation will have 26 new units with a mixture of one-bed, two-bed and family units plus big common room, kitchen and living areas. Come along and support a great fundraiser and evening this Saturday.

FOCUS ON FLETCHERS
Gaining international experience in Dubbo
By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY
TAIWANESE couple Kate Zeng and Villa Jing might never have imagined scrolling Facebook could land them a job in Australia, but that’s exactly what happened a year ago, when they first learned about positions vacant at Fletcher International Exports in Dubbo. A staff member at Fletchers regularly posts advertisements online to appear in Taiwanese social media for people looking for working holiday visas in Australia. Initially, Kate and Villa corresponded with a staff member, Carol, who would answer their questions and explain what the job offer was, plus what the pay is like and once they’d expressed their interest, she walked them through the process of the job application. Fletchers handle everything from booking the interview to assisting with visas, helping with housing, and settling international employees into their new life in Dubbo. There are three reasons Villa chose to seek work in Australia and
at the top of the list was the ability to have different work and life experiences. In Taiwan, Kate was working for a fast-food chain and Villa for an engineering company, handling supplier orders and enquiries. At Fletchers they both work the afternoon shift in meat packaging in the hot boning room. “My second reason is, I’m nearly 30 years old, and I can’t apply for a working visa for Australia after I turn 30 so I needed to come a year ago to be sure I could qualify, and thirdly, I’ve come here to make some money,” he told Dubbo Photo News. For Kate, the biggest motivations to work in Dubbo are to gain work experience but also to learn firsthand about Australian culture, the life here and people. One of the biggest differences Villa has found, compared to working in Taiwan, is the relationship with his managers, which unlike at home where a culture of blame prevails, the supervisors at Fletchers are always encouraging instead if you’re
not doing something properly while still learning the skills, and he describes them to be more like friends.
Kate and Villa both met Roger Fletcher during their induction a year ago, when he came into the room to personally greet them – and - prior to this interview, had just talked with him in the hallway. “Also, everyone is happy during the working day and don’t seem stressed because they’re enjoying life, so I feel very lucky working here, to have made so many friends from so many different countries, and I’m learning about their cultures which makes it very interesting,” Villa said. Afterhours, Kate, and Villa enjoying visiting friends houses for dinner and are planning to start weightlifting to improve their health. When they eventually return to Taiwan, they’ll also be setting a date for their wedding and we wish them all the best. Thank you Jo-Jo Chen for translation assistance!

Safety on site remains key priority this National Safe Work Month SAFETY on site in the construction industry is a core aspect of the day-today work builders and tradies manage in building the homes we all live in and enjoy. “The construction industry has made significant strides over the last two decades in managing safety on site and workplace safety incidents are continuing to trend downwards,” said Simon Croft, HIA Chief Executive Industry & Policy. “October is National Safe Work Month, and whilst safety should always be front of mind, it provides an important opportunity either as a reminder, or just a good reason to take time to reflect and discuss safety on site. “HIA will be undertaking a range of activities throughout October to support the residential building industry including safety videos, sharing our
extensive safety information resources and tools, to help the industry keep sites and workers safe,” Mr Croft said. “The workplace health and safety rules that builders and tradies need to navigate are getting more and more complex, and extending beyond just physical hazards to cover physiological hazards and risks. “Therefore, it is essential the building industry continue to take steps to manage risks, keep workplaces and workers on site safe and healthy as well as understanding their safety obligations,” he said. “HIA encourages everyone walking on site to think about safety as a shared responsibility – if you see something like a scaffold plank been moved or a piece of timber that may create a potential trip hazard – don’t walk by it, help to remedy or get assistance in doing so,” concluded Mr Croft.

Where do you work? The Establishment Bar, Dubbo. What’s your job? A little bit of everything… from being on the floor to the behind-the-scenes stuff. Management and running the business, greeting customers, marketing, ordering, mixing drinks, creating the menu and collaborating with our staff and community. A little bit of everything, LOL! Why do you Love Your
Work? It’s definitely the people: getting to see our regulars to meeting people passing through that love what we have created, and then the crew that we work with. Most embarrassing/ funny moment on the job? Oh gosh… I have a few! I’ve inherited a few nicknames, but I think almost losing my eyebrows from a rogue blowtorch… we had a bar full of people and I flew into the hall and
extinguished it and not one customer noticed. Who inspires you, and why? I have to say my family. My parents, and seeing them work so hard, the life I want to live with my husband and the legacy I want to leave behind for my kids. (Oh, and reno shows inspire me too… love a good reno show.) If you could work anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why? I would love to work
in a bar in NYC just to experience that nightlife. What was your first paying job? Babysitting Three words your friends would use to describe you? Not punctual, talkative, and probably a little eccentric. How would you spend a win of a million dollars? A beach house. What actor would you have play you, in a movie about your life? Sandra Bullock.

! s k o o b d l o r u o y g Brin GET your old pre-loved books out now, because they’re needed for a great local cause. Following the success of the Michael Egan Memorial Book Fair earlier this year, Dubbo West Rotary has begun preparations for the 2024 book fair. The 2023 Book Fair raised $19,000 for Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS)n Dubbo Support Group and Western Cancer Centre Foundation, Michael Egan Memorial Book Fair Coordinator Colin Shanks revealed. “April’s book fair was unbelievable,” Colin enthused.
“We knew the event was popular based on its 13-year history, but to be the one hosting it this year, makes it so rewarding when it is so well supported by the public,” he added. “We’ve been perfecting our collection techniques, with a weekend drive-through drop-off. The books just kept rolling in and we were flat out processing them. The members of Dubbo West Rotary will be out in force again sorting books into various genres.” This year’s event was a record fundraiser, he said, with a wide variety of great reads
the key to its success. “We are totally reliant on the generosity from those who donate the good-quality books that make this event possible.” Getting the ball rolling, their first book collection day will be held this between 9am3pm, Saturday, October 14, at Custom Steel Frames, 110 Fitzroy Street, Dubbo. A second collection day planned for January. The Michael Egan Memorial Book Fair will be held in late April 2024. For more information go to: dubbowestrotary. org.au or on Facebook.

fete fun in Ballimore
Bundle the kids into the car and head to Ballimore on Saturday October 21 for a day filled with plenty of family fun.
By LANA EATHER BALLIMORE Public School is a small rural school encompassing 15 students from kindergarten to Year 6. This year, for the first time, the school is conducting a fete. The fete will be held Saturday, October 21, from 10am-2pm, and will be the school’s main fundraiser for 2023. The P&C have been working hard to ensure there are many, many prizes for the raffle. A small sample of these prizes include café vouchers, butcher gift vouchers, fishing rods, a double swag, Yeti items and
donations from Mitre 10, BCF and Westrac. The students are also planning their stalls: a White Elephant stall, cake stall and a fun stall with bubbles, lucky dips and balloons. The fete has been strongly supported by the community with the supply of a jumping castle, petting animals and live music. The Ballimore Public School motto is ‘Together we care, share and learn’, and the fete will definitely demonstrate this sentiment. Come on out to Ballimore Public School Fete and show your support.

FOR many of us, our dog and cat, are often our best mates. With this in mind, local surgery, FurLife Vets Dubbo, now offers pet owners the chance to provide the very best in animal care, with one annual fee! The Best Mates program is a dedicated year-long plan to make sure your pet gets the best care imaginable, Dr Jayne Upston explained. “It’s a preventative health care program with unlimited standard consultations, a yearly routine vaccination included, free nail trims and microchip if needed, it’s a way of taking the worry about the cost of visits when you think your pet is not quite right”, she added. “In addition, the program also includes a free health screen blood test that allows us to identify diseases at the earliest stage possible and either a desexing or a dental scale and polish performed under general anaesthetic.”
Jayne said that the program is a win for both pets and their owners. “On top of all this, you get discounts on medication, parasite control, food, and merchandise. “It represents really good value, and it’s something new we’ve just offered the past year, this is a new way of looking at animal health care, having all major normal procedures covered, takes the worry out of going to the vets,” Jayne concluded. Now’s your chance to get your puss or pooch a free Best Mates Program, as FurLife, Dubbo, are giving away one membership as a special prize for Pet’s Month. Just scan the QR code to enter!
ISAAH’S TIPS HELPED HELEN FLY IN NRL TIPPING COMP
he may be a Sharkies’ fan having grownup in the Shire, but Helen Beer, franchisee of the Bank Of Queensland, Dubbo, was definitely cheering-on the Panthers in their latest grand final triumph. Helen was also the outright winner in this year’s Dubbo Photo News NRL tipping competition, but she did have a little help from her friends! Her chosen charity, the child hospital air transport service, Little Wings, provided her with some inside information – from some of the best NRL Guest Tippers around – including Dubbo’s very-own Isaah Yeo, the Panthers co-captain. Helen’s other guest tipsters, included football radio commentator, Anthony Maroon; Penrith star fullback, Dylan Edwards; and gun Panthers second-rower, Liam Martin. Helen, and her inside tippers, came-up trumps for our 2023 competition, with Little Wings winning an advertising package from DPN. A footie fan since growing-up at Kirrawee in southern Sydney, Helen said the tipping competition is a great way to develop interest in the community in the NRL, with plenty of advice and comment along the way.
PHOTO: PENRITH PANTHERS/NRL
“It was just for the fun of it, it was great; I had so many people stop me in the shops and say, ‘why did you pick the Panthers this week? The Dragons will flog them!’,” Helen laughed. “I got so much feed-back and everyone got involved; I had to go for the Panthers in the big one though, with Isiah so many other players from the region being involved,” she added. Her chosen charity, Little Wings transports sick country kids to the city with free flights for families most in need. With the calls on their not-for-profit service exploding since the end of COVID amid our chronic rural health crisis, the not-for-profit also recently held a major fundraiser at Dubbo RSL Club. If you are a local business interested in putting your hand-up for tipsters to play for their chosen charity in 2024, give us a bell here at Dubbo Photo News…

Sorting through clothing collection at the Wellington Museum.
THE Wellington Museum is home to many artefacts tracing Wellington history from 1830 to the present time, containing many photographs and a specialty display. The museum has recently relocated from the former Bank of NSW building to the old police station on the corner of Maughan and Percy streets, Wellington. The organisation of the new displays has been a work in progress with the museum staffed voluntarily by members of the Wellington Historical Society Inc. Volunteers Melissa Cox and Gloria McKeown planned a morning with a collection of ladies aged in their 90s to gather precious history and memories. The morning began with a perusal of the museum’s collections. Melissa tells Dubbo Photo News there was “much discussion and a lot of ‘I remember…’ and ‘Have a look at this'! What was going to be a quick look became an hour, but I found it great to just listen to the conversation and to ask a
few questions.” A majority of the group hold strong family ties to the Wellington region, and offered valuable insight in to many of the pieces held by the museum. One such piece was the pictured Victorian Mourning dress. “It is very fragile but was considered as an excellent example of the sewing skill, types of fabrics used and of how different fashion has become. The boxes also contained examples of underclothes from the 19th and 20th centuries which caused much discussion about how many layers had to be worn and quite a bit of laughter about the design of knickers,” says Melissa. Volunteers will continue to classify the pieces to incorporate into exhibitions within the new location of the old police station, cells and yards. Through further research and planning the museum will continue to expand their exhibits and collections of oral history. Visit the museum at Old Police Station & Gaol, 5-15 Maughan Street, Wellington.

CWA workshop highlights international help for women
Thumbs up and congratulations to the staff and students of the Senior School on their graduation ceremony for the 2023 year. Good luck to all graduating students. Thumbs up to Magnolia Café. My daughter and I absolutely loved our waffle breakfast on the long weekend. Great atmosphere and amazing food. Thumbs up and thank-you to Rhianna who helped my partner when our car broke down. She was working across the road and allowed him to use her phone to call me so I could pick him up. A really kind woman. Thumbs up to Renee and her husband who assisted me when I was bitten by a dog that we were trying to get off the road. Renee took me to and from the hospital and her husband drove my car home. Their help is so appreciated. Thumbs up to the tradesman who attended my home on Saturday, October 9, to return my grandson’s wallet which he had lost earlier that day, near Red Rooster. Your honest and good Samaritan act was received with deep appreciation. My grandson was so grateful that you found and dropped his wallet to his home. A huge ‘shout out’ and ‘thank you’ from a very appreciative young man and his family. Thumbs up to Gai at Raine & Horne and the team from Porters Plumbing for their quick response to a call out. Fantastic service, highly recommend these businesses and their service. Thumbs up to Lewis and the team at Geoff Richards Panel Beating. Not only did they do a fantastic job on the repairs, they were great with communication and let me know where they were up to at all times. Great work, highly recommended.

CWA members from throughout the Central West recently took part in an international workshop designed to empower women around the world. Held at the Gilgandra CWA rooms, members travelled from the Far Western Group, the Macquarie Group, and the Castlereagh Country Group, with the Macquarie International Officer Karen McHale welcoming all visiting CWA members. The workshop was about exploring CWA international studies, and was opened by CWA NSW International Officer Jenny Chobdzynski. A comprehensive report was also delivered in Jenny’s work as State International Officer, which includes guiding all Branch International Officers in their role; coordinating the CWA’s International functions; and organising seminars at the International conferences and support branch and group officers. Jenny also emphasised that we are all volunteers and have something to contribute as part of this world. Each year, the CWA members vote on a country of study and also support the ACWW’s (Associated Country Women of the World) Rural Women in Action fund and help empower women, globally. Traditionally, this was done by collecting stamps at branch functions and meetings and a “Pennies for Friendships” fund that was
setup way back in 1939. In 2022, however, the Pennies for Friendship fund was replaced by a new program called “Rural Women in Action” with the yearly collection from branch members continuing. Other work includes CWA Members packing and sending Material Aid Parcels overseas to our neighbouring countries for more than 20 years. The parcels, each weighing no more than 5kg (due to the cost of larger parcels) are sent to past international students, women’s groups, and missions and schools across the South Pacific. They comprise mothers and baby packs with all new clothing, with donations of good clothing needed at all times. Other projects include “Women Walk the World” which is held each year in April and is a great fundraising event for ACWW, which also funds grassroots projects to help the lives of women around the world. Other work includes: Rural women’s health Holistic approach to nutrition Sexual reproduction and healthcare for women Education – Social Justice for all and change attitudes to female empowerment. ACWW have a long history of providing support to education and capacity building projects which have enabled women to come together and share skills. A wonderful day was enjoyed by all who attended the workshop

How Feedback Helps a Sale Feedback from open homes plays a crucial role in the selling process. Here’s how it aids in selling a property: 1. Interest Level: Open homes reveal the level of interest in your property. Sparse attendance may suggest a need to adjust your marketing strategy, while high turnout indicates strong demand. 2. Pricing Insights: Feedback helps gauge whether the property is priced correctly. If multiple attendees suggest a lower price point, it may signal a need for a price adjustment, while strong interest might justify a higher asking price. 3. Identify Red Flags: Open homes can uncover issues or improvements needed with feedback describing areas that may require attention. 4. Improve Marketing: The feedback received helps fine-tune the marketing campaign. Adjustments can be made to better represent the property’s features and generate further interest.

Eumungerie Public School
Proudly sponsored by
Nestled amongst the beautiful bushland between Dubbo and Gilgandra is the amazing little village of Eumungerie. Eumungerie Public School is the home of the Warriors, a group of 12 amazing K-6 students that strive to learn, play and grow. Small school life is super-exciting and loads of fun. We spend a lot of time learning in our outdoor garden area, and have a huge focus on learning about sustainability and our surrounding environment. We grow our own vegetables and enjoy cooking every week during our Kids Kitchen lessons. Our amazing P&C supply us with healthy breakfasts and we love to work closely with them on with other fundraisers throughout the year. We spend a lot of time living an active life and enjoy the opportunity to play different sports and games during our morning fitness routine and weekly sports sessions. Eumungerie Public School lives the small school life in a BIG way. Go Warriors!
TIME WARP “Rabbit-oh” cry meant fresh meat for earlier generations On Christmas Day, 1859, a self-made wealthy settler Thomas Austin released 13 European wild rabbits on his estate “Winchelsea”, Barwon Park, Victoria. They had been specially collected and sent to him by a relative in England. Australia would never be the same again. With little competition, few predators, and VW VI\Q^M LQ[MI[M[ ZIJJQ\[ [XZMIL TQSM _QTLÅZM through the continent and, within a few decades, numbered in their hundreds of millions, with an estimated population of 10 billion by 1920. No wonder they became a source of cheap protein for the poor and frugal for decades, selling for six shillings each, with the cry, “rabbitoh” sounding throughout the suburbs and towns of Australia as sellers hawked their produce, often carried on wooden staves across their shoulders. The lean, gamey meat became popular in Australian-style curries. Its cheapness, accessibility, and its lack of rationing during World War II, ironically, led to it being considered an “inferior” meat, associated with poverty and necessity, and it fell out of favour by the 1950s.

OUT ON A LIMB
ARIES: You’ll feel on edge, and a particular event will encourage you to consider making life changes. In your career, a competing business might tempt you with an offer for better working conditions and opportunities for advancement. TAURUS: You’ll take time to pamper yourself and indulge in a few small pleasures. You’ll negotiate rates to achieve a settlement that will improve both your work and personal well-being. GEMINI: At work, you’ll have to face numerous urgent and complex situations. These experiences may turn out to be beneficial, as they’ll give you skills that will serve you throughout your career. CANCER: Your pride will be tested. Fortunately, you’ll have an opportunity to show yourself in a positive light. If you act for the right reasons, you can’t go wrong. Share accurate, useful information. LEO: You’ll have some small family chores to handle. You may also have to stay at home for part of the week, perhaps to keep an eye on some work or to wait for a late delivery. VIRGO: You may need to start multitasking. The telephone may ring incessantly. Maintain harmony by avoiding criticism when you’re with your significant other – or anyone else, in fact. LIBRA: Be prudent with money and try to stick to your budget. Additional expenses related to home or family may arise. You’ll need to exercise discipline with your young children. SCORPIO: As the new season weather sets in, you’ll feel the need to take care of your body. It would be wise to join a gym to incentivise you to exercise regularly. SAGITTARIUS: Rather than rushing into a decision, think twice. If you let yourself be carried by the current, it’ll take you to your destination. Trust your instincts over the next few days. CAPRICORN: Take care when speaking, as you could appear foolish to more than one person. Fortunately, only your pride will be affected, and it’ll help lighten a heavy atmosphere. AQUARIUS: Time is valuable. Try not to schedule too many appointments on the same day and run the risk of overlap. A vacation would be beneficial. PISCES: As the days get longer, you’ll look for an activity that will bring you intense joy. You’ll find yourself infused with an energy that moves you to entertain yourself more often.

Equimillions giving old gallopers a second chance as Kate and Brooke jump into equestrian history By GEOFF MANN EXPERIENCED rider, Kate Edwards, along with one of the younger members of the Dubbo Equestrian and Showjumping Association (DESHA), Brooke Garland, have been making great strides in their chosen sport. The two have won the hearts of western horse people, after their success at the inaugural “Equimillion” Event in Sydney over the October Long Weekend. An equestrian event with a minimum $1 million in prize-money is unheard of in Australia so, when Racing NSW announced it would be establishing Equimillion, Kate and Brooke took on the challenge with both reins. “The event was introduced exclusively for retired Thoroughbred racehorses across disciplines of Eventing, Jumping, Dressage, and Show horse, so Brooke and I literally jumped in and registered,” Kate explained. “Equimillion showcases the versatility and suitability of Thoroughbreds for careers outside of racing, and we have both been training our horses with this in mind,” she added. For a discipline usually motivated by love of horses and passion for the sport, the financial incentive was somewhat surprising, she explained. We weren’t expecting to get such an unexpected financial return. “But, when you’re in a sport that usually produces ribbons, it means a lot,” Kate laughed. Like almost every equestrian in the State, Kate and Brooke are amateurs who compete for the enjoyment of the sport, their bond with their horses, and the challenge on self-improvement and testing themselves against the best. Kate’s horse was brought up from Victoria, where it had been racing.
“My husband, Steve, thought we might be able to change its fortunes but, after four starts, he realised running around the track, wasn’t going to be too productive so we thought I could try jumping. “I said to Steve, ‘wouldn’t it be funny, if I won more in the Equimillion, than you did galloping?’,” Kate said. As it turned out, Kate’s $15,000 first prize in the 80cm section, was quadruple what Steve had achieved in those four starts! Creator of the concept, Racing NSW CEO, Peter Vlandys is excited about the event after the first weekend. “Equimillion has the potential to carry more than the $1 million in prizemoney and, in time, will be not only a major equestrian event, but a major event for NSW with competitors coming from all states of Australia” he added. Kate and Brooke were ecstatic to be competing in such a prestigious tournament. Both agreed it was “a big atmosphere” with over 400 horses entered. “It was so good. There is room for improvement for the future, especially in attracting spectators but there were a lot of happy people. Everyone was buzzing,” Brooke told Photo News. Kate agreed. “This is an event which has the potential to make a real change in the equestrian world in terms of thoroughbred participation. “There is a lot of thought going into future events about the important connection between people that compete with horses and those who have horses they wish to see rehomed.” The event has the chance to offer old gallopers, a new lease on life, literally! “Bringing both groups together with a shared purpose can be further developed and nurtured. “This event can go a long way

to helping with that,” Kate shared. Both riders singled out Dale Frew and DESHA for their incredible support. “The club has given so many people a start. “We have novices and those like me who have been around for a long time and still enjoy being in the saddle,” Kate added: “Dale was in the Olympic train-on squad at one stage and maintains close contacts with people like dual gold-medallist Matt Ryan and others who come out to our centre at Brocklehurst to tutor us.” Both praised Dubbo City Turf Club which provided sponsorship
Kate and horse, a big winner at the Equimillions event
for both of them. “Sam Fitzgerald and the team out at the Turf Club have been so encouraging,” Brooke said. “They are actively involved with our club at regular events and the Dubbo Show; it’s great we are able to blend the racing and show-jumping together in Equimillion.” She added that their support, complements the possibilities of offering old racers a second-chance. “Dubbo Turf Club has been a long-time sponsor of the OTT classes held by Dubbo Eventing & Showjumping Association,
and are so supportive of our local Thoroughbred riders and their horses, which they often are familiar with from their past racing careers. Thank you!” she said. I suggested she and Kate might be able to give a demonstration ride at one of the big upcoming meetings, Derby Day or at the Melbourne Cup here in Dubbo. “That would be fantastic! “People who go to the gallops, love horses as much as we do so if we can educate them on how ‘slow’ racers are being cared for and transitioned it will be a win for everyone.”

REFEREES young and old, rookies learning about hoops and young stars emerging are all the basketball buzz at Dubbo Sports World! Dubbo Basketball Association had a standout season in the Western League and plans are well underway for the new one starting. “We have a wonderful group of current and former players who give generously of their time to train others,” Representative Coordinator, Claire Bynon recently told Dubbo Photo News. “It is particularly pleasing to see some seniors continuing to be actively-involved, officiating at local and the highest levels, as well as mentoring up-and-coming referees,” she added. This means that, thankfully, there is more Friday nights, training on and off the court, and “dancing with the ball on boards” coming-up for hoop fans! A recent Referees Refresher Course, showed how well the local game, invented for poor boys to have a sport to play in urban areas of America more than 100-years ago, is travelling.
Tully’s golden touch, takes her to medal glory in UAE By GEOFF MANN YOUNG Dubbo basketballer Tully Pickering, lit-up the court on her recent trip to the United Arab Emirates; coming home with gold. Tully – a Western Region Academy of Sport 2024 UAA Senior Basketball squad member – was selected for the NBA Basketball School Australia U/15 Girls team that travelled to Abu Dhabi during the school holidays. Tully came home proud-
ly wearing the “Player of the Final Medal”, to match her Australian team’s gold medal after their unbeaten run in the tournament. The confident and talented player, began her junior Aussie career with a bang, named MVP in the first match against teams from various NBA basketball schools from across the globe. Tully is setting her sights on a US College Scholarship, a dream enhanced by her experiences in Abu Dhabi, including a courtside seat at the NBA pre-season
game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Dallas Mavericks. Tully says she fell in love with basketball the first time she held a ball. “I was only about six or seven but, as soon as I went on the court with Mum, I loved it!” she recalled. “I really love my family and the Dubbo Basketball community, are great supporters,” Tully added. Her mother Benny has been one of Dubbo Ram’s best for
more than a decade. Her genes have obviously been transmitted as Tully’s form at local and Academy level has caught the eye. “They look after us, and provide great training to learn the game. “Our coaches are always encouraging us to be the best we can,” Tully smiled. Tully is just another of our crop of young sportspeople making Dubbo a hot name on the courts. Photos per separate email

Close bowling in a number of tight weekend match-ups Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ A TOTAL of 43 enthusiastic bowlers soaked up the sun, despite the cool wind at North Dubbo Sporties on Sunday. Leo Balstad first swung into the role as “Swinger” for Frank Armstrong and Col Cottee as well as Cheryl Storch and Al Andriske. Frank and Col turned after eight ends leading by one, but by 14, it was 11-apiece. Both added a single over the last two and it ended up 12-all. Ron McCauley, Di Hildebrant, and Graham Ross also kept the
door open for Terry Millar, Kathy Ashby, and Paul Goodstat, when leading by a single shot after eight. They kept the pressure on with three “threes”, but were stunned when Terry Kath and Paul levelled up at 15. Another triple saw Graham’s side claim a close 17-14 win. In another tight first half, Sue McCauley, Ross Pharo, and Phil Knight could only put one shot on Sue Armstrong, Therese Gaio, and Bryan O’Sullivan. However, Phil’s side found that little extra during the second stage for a close but comfortable 14-11 win.
On Rink Nine, Chris Strojny and Mike Twohill produced some quality bowling against Rob Pfeiffer and Allan Stratford. They put aside the mental impact of the wind, to turn a five-shot halfway lead into a 21-11 win. Another of the “games of two halves” popped-up when Gavin Cullen, Steve Kelly, and Col Dover turned the table on Col Livingston, Helene Emblen, and Matt Quill, dropping a six count on end 13! It was 10-10 after nine, but the big six saw Gavin, Steve and Col cruise to a 22-12 win.
Mary Perry, Eric Satchell, and Ricky See were the third biggest winners on the day; having to struggle through the first eight ends as Daphne Dunbar, Ruby Stockings, and Kevin Scott applied plenty of pressure. However, they went on with it, taking six of the next eight, including a four and a seven, to seize the game by 23-9. The next best and the next worst was played out on Rink Two where a slow start for Sue O’Dea, John McKenzie, and John Cole, gave Chris Castlehouse, Gary Huggins, and Pete Ruzans,
false confidence, as Sue and John found their rhythm to record a three-shot lead. In a masterful second stanza, they added a few fours and a five to record a 26-8 win and collect second place for the morning. Saving the best till last, Roger Sherwin and Tod O’Dea, faced a monumental task, scoring just one shot in the first half against Vince Mascara and Ian Humphries, who posted 17 and added another 10 on the way home for a 27-5 demolition of their opponents and the award for the morning.

From winter to spring: sports fields renewal Taneka best on WHILE versatile sportsmen and women have now put away their football and netball gear and taken-up their cricket and softball bats and gloves, the same happens to our sporting fields. Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) Greenspace Operations team have just finished field rehabilitation over the past month as winter sports competitions came to an end and before the recent start of the summer sports commencing. “The sporting field rehabilitation is undertaken in spring as it is the only major window our staff have between the winter and summer sports in the region,” Dubbo Regional Council Greenspace Operations Manager, Harry Brennan said. “This is the team’s annual opportunity to implement soil improvement works by adding sand to improve drainage quality for years to come,” he added. As part of the sporting field rehabilitation program goal posts are removed, turf is scarified and aerated using the verti-drain and recycle renovator. Council staff also top-dress the fields with sand and top-dress cricket wickets with fresh clay as well as undertaking weed control and implementing the turf nutrition plan. “The rehabilitation works aim to even out the playing surface, remove thatch and improve the soil to assist with drainage. “Spring is also the beginning of the turf

growing season after winter dormancy, as the weather warms up it allows the turf to grow more actively and recover from winter usage,” Mr Brennan said. DRC maintains a number of sporting fields across 22 locations in the Dubbo Local Government Area. Sporting fields scheduled to undergo rehabilitation in 2023/24 include Victoria Ovals, Lady Cutler precinct, Apex Oval, John McGrath Fields, Bob Dowling Oval and the East Dubbo Sporting Complex in Dubbo and Pioneer Park, Rygate Oval and
Kennard Park in Wellington. “The Greenspace Operations team acknowledge the user groups who move their games for this short period of time to accommodate Council maintenance works each year,” Mr Brennan said. The sporting field rehabilitation was completed prior to a number of major sporting carnivals being held in Dubbo including the Veterans Cricket NSW 60s State Championships and the Dubbo Sixes Soccer Tournament.
Demons are setting new standards with ladies now leading our local club
By GEOFF MANN
DUBBO Demons Club has continued to excel in the promotion of Australian Rules football in the area, leading the way in juniors development as well as claiming the Women’s Central West title this season. Now, for the first time, the Demons have elected a female president as it heads into its fifth decade, with three of the top four spots at the pioneering club, now held by the fairer sex. Dubbo Photo News has taken the following from the Dubbo Demon’s Facebook page to introduce the new team who will guide the club’s future. “President – Kaitlyn Waldie. You may better know her as “Speedy”. Speedy has been part of the club for a couple of years now, serving as Vice President last year, being part of the Premiership winning women’s leadership group and was awarded Club Person of the Year at the recent presentation night. Speedy has been an integral part of the club and is looking forward to the new season in this role.

WITH women’s rugby league increasingly in the spotlight, it’s timely to highlight an incredible performance by young local footballer, Taneka Todhunter. The No 9 from Dubbo confirmed her rising status in rugby league circles with a five-star match-winning performance in the Koori Knockout as best on ground. Having already represented NSW and Aboriginal Koori teams, the Eels NRLW star shone on the shores of Lake Tuggerah as the Yowies clipped the Redfern All Blacks in a tense final of the women’s series. Australian five-eighth Caitlin Moran gained headlines with her golden-point field goal, but the judges chose the former Macquarie and CYMS League Tag and Goannas hooker, as Player of the Match.

Cool-hand Max
By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL
FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Max Handley has the steady hands and cool demeanour of Paul Newman’s famous portrayal of “Fast Eddie” Felson, in the 1960s classic movie, “The Hustler”. In the same nonchalant way, Max recently navigated his way to the NSW Under 21 Snooker Championships. Max plays with his Dad and other snooker enthusiasts at Dubbo RSL, taking to tables that have hosted legends like champion snooker and billiards player, Eddie Charlton. The NSW Snooker & Billiards Facebook page hailed the prodigy for his unflappable nature. “A natural potter, with no fear. What a
talent. Hope to see more of your games in the future,” wrote David Williams. MJ Harp described Max’s win as “an impressive performance” while Shannon Dixon praised the young gun “and all your opponents”. Riley Core from Bathurst, great nephew of former 2DU General Manager, Ray Core, was strong in his acclamation after going down in the final. “Great job Max. You’re a gun little player”! Steve Fabian described Max’s win this way. “Watching the Final stream, Max could see the finish line and came home strong with confident potting… and that all round great attitude of champions. A big future Max if given the right support.” Well done Max Handley!
