Rosé kind of day for Bobby’s Lane launch I
By DAVID DIXON
t is one of Dubbo’s longest-established wineries and is re-opening this weekend with its very-first new vintage. Previously known as Tombstone Estate on Basalt Road, “Bobby’s Lane Estate” boutique vineyard and winery, has become the passion for performer-turned-winemaker, Ben Ransom and his partner, whose family worked the land on which the winery is now built. “I’m in the music industry, and my wife, Renai’s family, once owned the property on which the vineyard is now set,” he added. “Many years ago, the whole parcel of land there was owned by her grandfather, ‘Pappy’ (Hood), before being subdivided and a vineyard established on a 25-acre lot by the Tilling family; the property has had a couple of owners, but is now back in the family,” Ben explained. Working in the big smoke, it was this chance of establishing their own niche business in the golden west, that brought them back. “We lived in Sydney and decided to move to Dubbo, when this opportunity presented itself. “We took-over in February 2022, and have been working to get the winery back into production since then, with our first wine, ‘Bobby’s Lane Estate Rosé’, launching this Saturday,” Ben said proudly. With six acres of the property already under vines, Ben as well has a nice Shiraz in barrels maturing until bottling early next year, and is also cultivating runs of Cabernet, Sangiovese, and Muscat grapes for a variety of future wines. The ticketed launch is now effectively sold-out, with Ben to also pick-up his guitar to provide a musical accompaniment

to the fun and festivities of the launch. With Ben still working in the entertainment industry, and Renai, a part-time anaesthetic nurse at Dubbo Base Hospital as well as a legal secretary, they’re looking at making baby steps at first in their new vocation. “We started from scratch essentially, we’ll do small events once we’re going, with wine-tasting by appointment,” Ben said. “It’s going to be a great afternoon and good weather; I’ll also be performing, and it should be a fantastic day,” Ben said.

ARCADIA WINDS BLOW INTO DUBBO THIS FRIDAY
Macquarie Con’s 2023 Concert Series concludes this Friday with a performance by Arcadia Winds. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
MACQUARIE Conservatorium’s 2023 Concert Series concludes this Friday, with a performance by an exciting ensemble of Australia’s best wind players, Arcadia Winds. The much-delayed performance of this prestigious group can’t come soon enough, Macquarie Conservatorium Director Vivienne Winther explained. “After two COVID-cancelled tours, we are pleased our third try to bring Arcadia Winds to Dubbo, will finally be successful,” she said. “Arcadia Winds were awarded a fellowship at the Australian National Academy
of Music upon their formation in late 2013; and were Musica Viva Australia’s inaugural ‘FutureMakers’ musicians from 2015–2017,” she added. As wind players mostly based in Melbourne, the COVID lockdowns and restrictions on wind instruments were a big blow to Arcadia Winds. They have bounced back to continue as one of Australia’s best wind quintets, touring for Music Viva Australia, the nation’s major classical music presenter. They have taken their brand of energetic, joyful and spontaneous performance to festival stages all over Australia,
concert halls across mainland China, and reached thousands of listeners around the world through their broadcasts for the BBC Proms. A desire to celebrate and promote Australian music has led Arcadia Winds to commission and perform works by composers Elliott Gyger, Natalie Williams, Andrew Ford, Lachlan Skipworth, Kate Neal, Peter de Jager, Sam Smith and Elizabeth Younan. In 2017, they recorded Lachlan Skipworth’s Echoes and Lines on their debut self-titled EP, released in partnership with ABC Classics and Musica Viva. The five performers in Ar-
cadia Winds are Kate Proctor, flute; Rachel Bullen, oboe; Lloyd Van’t Hoff, clarinet; Rachel Shaw, horn; and Matthew Kneale, bassoon. Their concert program for Dubbo includes Mozart’s Serenade for Winds in C Minor, plus special arrangements for their five instruments of Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute, Debussy’s Children’s Corner Suite and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Visit Macquarie Conservatorium’s Facebook page for more infoTickets are on sale now from www.123tix.com.au for the Arcadia Winds concert on Friday, October 20, at 7.30pm.

VOLUNTEERING REACHES DIAMOND One of the greatest achievements for the Dubbo community has been the continuation, by volunteers, to provide meals to its aged and vulnerable citizens since November 1963 With an ongoing roster of volunteers and plenty of enthusiasm from individuals and groups, Meals on Wheels Dubbo has been maintained as a support service for those in need. Its aim is to provide nutritional assistance to people unable to care for themselves and have no other aid source available to them. Meals on Wheels Dubbo was initially sponsored by the Apex Club after a community meeting which was held, in which over 50 people attended in 1963. At that time, Meals on Wheels was already set up in some metropolitan areas around Australia and was gradually moving into regional areas. Maureen McKay was part of the Catholic Community group of volunteers when it first started and was an active volunteer until recently. Maureen recalls that “Initially an executive committee was established with representation from each organisation willing to be involved”. Maureen added “We’re very fortunate to have been able to keep it running for the last 60 years. Many aspects of society have changed over the last 60 years, but Meals on Wheels Dubbo has been a constant, by providing nutritious and affordable meals to the elderly in our community.” “The service has grown from just a few hot meals a day when it started in 1963, to include both hot and frozen meals with extensive menu selections, as well as transport and social support for our clients” explained Service Manager Peter English. “What is important, is that the service continues to offer the same comfort and assistance as it always has, living up to the slogan of ‘more than just a meal’. We have continued to focus on the needs for our clients which has meant that the organisation is still as relevant today, as it was at that community meeting in 1963“ he added.

Shané on her slow route south T
By SHARON BONTHUYS
ime was when enjoying the pleasures of travel was a joy in itself, rather than the quickest way from A to B. Horse-lover, Shané Steffen – taking a slow, leisurely ride through the Golden West early next year – would love to see those days return. Locals, whether on horseback, walking, or cycling, she adds, are welcome to join her on the way, as she promotes the protection of old-style stock routes. The young agricultural scientist and farmer is leading an epic trek across NSW from north to south on horseback, travelling along existing stock routes and passing through Dubbo and Narromine along the way. The trek is not raising funds for a charity, nor is it out to set a blazing travel record. Rather, the Azadi Far Ride to the Murray is a cause in itself, promoting the preservation of the stock routes as a sustainable tourism asset with heritage value, supporting the communities along the routes, as well as the growing concept of “slow travel”. Shané has been involved in agriculture for two decades, and this will be the first big endurance event she has undertaken. She has done several smaller events in preparation for next year’s ride. Azadi is a Persian word meaning “freedom”, something Shané has applied to her life and work, and now the forthcoming trek across NSW. Starting in mid-March 2024, the 1100-kilometre trek from Goondiwindi on the Queensland/NSW border to Tocumwal on the NSW/Victorian border will take six to eight weeks to complete, and interested people are welcome to participate. “The idea is for people to join me; horse-riders, walkers, and cyclists have expressed interest in joining me on the trip,” she said. Shané believes that stock routes are an existing asset that have vital heritage value. “These routes are an important part of Australia’s heritage, but they are under threat from development and neglect,” she said. “This initiative is aimed at increasing the popularity of slow travel and putting a focus on developing stock routes for this diversified purpose,” she added. Using these largely-neglected routes, she adds, will ideally create momentum for their retention and appreciation. “We hope to inspire others to get involved, follow our footsteps and work towards preserving these routes for the future,” she said. “I’m afraid if we don’t use it, we’ll lose it. I see the most viable way to sustain it and to sustain the communities there is to diversify its purpose.” The routes, she adds, have played a vital role in, not just our rural economies, but lifestyles, too. “The stock routes are there for the farmers when they need them in emergencies, but also for tourism and to keep those communities [along the routes] alive. There are a lot of towns that don’t have pubs or other businesses anymore because they didn’t get enough people coming through,” Shané explained.
The route she will take from Goondiwindi to the Central West includes the towns of Moree, Narrabri, Boggabri, Mullaley, Tambar Springs, Coolah, Leadville, Dunedoo, Elong Elong, before arriving in Dubbo. After leaving Dubbo, the route continues via Narromine, Peak Hill, Parkes, Forbes, Marsden, West Wyalong, Ardlethan, Grong Grong, Narrandera, Jerilderie and ends in Tocumwal on the NSW/Victorian border. Ms Steffen will start the journey alone with two experienced endurance horses: 23-year-old Arab gelding Glory, and eight-year-old Arabian mare Melika. Other people will join the trek at different points along the way for varying distances and periods. “There’s a horserider in Wagga Wagga who’s also a prominent endurance rider who has expressed interest; there’s a lady from NSW who’s currently in Africa who will get back at the end of the year and wants to join as well. “A couple of walkers from Europe are [also] going to walk it as part of their exploring Australia. We plan to feature the stories of these people, the travellers we meet, and the travellers who join us for sections of the ride on our website,” Shané said. Shané aims to stop in eight towns along the way and connect with those communities. “We could do it faster, but that’s not the point. The point is to demonstrate the possibilities, highlight the communities [we visit], the natural conservation and points of interest that are there.” The proposed travel route will be publicly listed so that followers of the journey, and potential or future participants can follow the same route. “They can see where we stopped, where businesses are that support slow travellers and ecotourism, where water is, where food is for horses, bike repair shops, everything,” she said. Inspired by this most-unusual odyssey? Shané, like all old-time travellers, is welcoming of support from communities along the route. “Having somewhere to camp that’s suitable for the horses and other travellers who join us is ideal. A hot shower would be nice, as we’re going to be pretty limited with those on the road. “Ardlethan Country Women’s Association (CWA) was wanting to organise a morning tea where I can talk about what we’re doing,” she said. Narromine’s CWA is currently considering what support it may be able to provide when the travellers arrive in town. Shané’s website has detailed information about the Azadi Far Ride to the Murray, including a blog documenting her preparations for the trek. Anyone interested in participating in the ride or providing assistance along the route can contact her via the website: azadifarride.com

Walk to Remember precious young lives
O
ctober is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. To support and honour the babies and their families The Baby Loss Mentor Rochelle Olsen, in conjunction with Red Nose Australia, has planned the Dubbo Walk to Remember. Set to take place on October 22 at 11am at the serene Sandy Beach Parklands, Rochelle says: “This event is an opportunity for the community to unite, remember, and honour the lives of precious babies that left us too soon. It provides a safe space for those who have experienced the pain of baby loss to come together and find solace in shared experiences. Together, we aim to raise awareness, provide comfort, and create a sense of community for baby loss parents during this special month.” In 2020 Red Nose merged with SANDS (Miscarriage, Stillbirth and Newborn Death Support) to become the leading
national organisation for pregnancy and infant loss support and research. SANDS has been running the Walk to Remember for many years. “I believe that mums and families impacted by baby loss should be able to participate in beautiful community events that celebrate their babies and respect their grief and loss… no matter what their postcode is,” says Rochelle. The event is aimed towards anyone who is impacted by pregnancy or infant loss and wants to support the walk. This includes the parents of a baby who has died, grandparents, family members, friends of those parents and community organisations. Everyone is welcome to this event with tickets available at stks.be/dubbo-wtr or contact Rochelle at rochelle@thebabylossmentor.com.au. Pictured: The Baby Loss Mentor Rochelle Olsen. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Because the Dubbo Region is the best place to build your career DUBBO WORKS is highlighting the excellent career and learning opportunities the Dubbo region offers. DUBBO WORKS is a community-building initiative brought to you by Fletcher International Exports and Dubbo Photo News. To contribute ideas, email dubboworks@dubbophotonews.com.au phone 6885 4433.
FOCUS ON FLETCHERS
Graduate opportunities abound at Fletchers trying to tell someone on the floor what to produce and having no idea how packing works or how a single mess up in quantities might affect the whole of load out; you get to feel what production’s like so when you do have to tell them what to do you’re guiding rather than coming in blind.”
By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY LUCIA McDermott arrived for work at Fletchers International Exports five months ago, fresh from agribusiness studies at Marcus Oldham college in Geelong and ready to participate in the company’s graduate program. “At the moment I’m in the office, doing a lot of sales support and product specifications plus I’ve just started doing value add for production and a bit of R&D; so, I’m getting a bit of a feel for everything,” Lucia explained to Dubbo Photo News. The twenty-two-year-old finds the graduate program is an opportunity to experience everything on offer at Fletchers which is helping her choose what she might do in the long term. “I think the best thing that Fletchers offers graduates is flexibility by not having a structured program so with a lot of other businesses there’s a set, oneto-two-year program where you spend a certain amount of time in certain places and if you don’t like it, you’re stuck there. “Fletchers are geared more towards what you want to do, so if I said, I’m really not interested in the meat side of things I want to go to grain, they would be more than supportive because they facilitate the program around where you want to be, not just what suits them which is really great,” Lucia said.
As for any business, employees are the greatest asset and with hundreds working at Fletchers Lucia has witnessed this on a large scale. “You go out to the floor, and you speak to people who are genuinely living in another country away from their children or from their family and they’re smiling and happy up there, and it probably isn’t an ideal the situation but you have to value that part of your employee, you have to see the commitment that they’re putting in to just being here, it’s a huge sacrifice,” Lucia said. While it’s early days yet to decide a single career pathway, Lucia can see growth opportunities within Fletchers. Fletchers International Exports graduate program participant Lucia McDermott. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS
Originally from Sydney with family ties in Condobolin and Molong, Lucia has fallen in love with Dubbo after moving here for the program but it’s the staff culture inside Fletchers, which has surprised her the most. “Probably the culture is my fa-
vourite part about working here. The fact that I can go up on the harvest floor and it’s quite easy going even though obviously work is going on, but you still get the opportunity to have a good chat to anyone on the floor and it’s the same in the office, it’s just a dif-
ferent type of conversation about business or finance or HR. “I started on the harvest floor and everyone who works in the office started as a labourer on the floor so they understand how the business works because imagine someone from management is
“I would like to grow within the business, and I can see growth and a trajectory but where I’d necessarily end up being in the next five years will probably be determined by my own limitations, not because there are any limitations in place here, it’ll be up to me to put the effort in or say yes to opportunities as they come along.”
Dubbo welcomes new district vet By SHARON BONTHUYS CAREER veterinarian Dr Jayne Dwyer has swapped the sub-tropical Northern Rivers/Lismore region and decades of private practice for life in the central west and a new role as a government vet. Now based in Dubbo, Dr Dwyer has recently joined the team of District Vets working with the Central West Local Land Services (LLS). It’s the first government role for Dr Dwyer, who has spent 30 years in mixed-animal private practice in three states. “I was in the Northern Rivers for a bit over 20 years and before that I worked in private practice in Queensland and Victoria as well,” said Dr Dwyer, who is enjoying her new role. “The District Vet is part of the animal health team at LLS and we’re here to work with landholders, managers and the community to improve primary production and support agricultural businesses in regional areas,” she said. “We help with the health of the livestock industry and more generally to make regional communities and their agricultural businesses
profitable and sustainable into the future.” This work includes assisting primary producers with any particular problems they may be having with their livestock, she said. There are six District Vets in the Central West LLS team, spread across a vast geographical region including the local government areas of Bogan (lower), Coonamble, Dubbo Regional, Forbes, Gilgandra, Lachlan, Narromine, Parkes, Warren, Warrumbungle, and Weddin. Dr Dwyer is one of two District Vets based in Dubbo and travels all over the region as needed. The team is busy, having carried out more than 5,000 on-farm disease investigations last year with biosecurity officers, Dr Dwyer said. “The producers I’ve met with have been extremely appreciative of the help that they’ve received [from LLS], and really appreciate the information and service we give. “I’ve gone on-farm, diagnosed a disease, helped them manage it, treat it, and then I can also put them in touch with nutritionists that work for LLS [for further support].
“I’m really appreciative of the opportunity to work with them on their farms, too,” Dr Dwyer said. A typical week for a District Vet could include a combination of onfarm visits carrying out disease investigations, looking at flock and herd health issues, as well as community engagement through field days and information days for producers. District Vets also visit saleyards and carry out inspections as part of their disease surveillance work, Dr Dwyer said. They also consult other teams within LLS such as natural resource management, which deals closely with invasive species. Dr Dwyer has loved her move inland to the central west with its very different climate and landscape. “I really love it. It’s so different. We were in a summer rainfall area [in the Northern Rivers], and we don’t have anywhere near as much cropping up there. “I find this region quite beautiful with more open plains and undulating [landscape]. The crops are just beautiful.” Welcome to the central west, Dr Dr Jayne Dwyer has recently joined Central West LLS as a District Vet. PHOTOS: CW LLS Jayne Dwyer.

Trucker Stef leads way for women in heavy haulage HEAVY haulage used to be a man’s world. But no longer… with a local girl recently landing a prestigious industry award. Up-and-coming truck driver Stephanie Arpasi, of Dubbo firm Fardell’s Heavy Haulage, was recently named the National Road Transport Association Youth Employee of the Year. NatRoad chair Paul Fellows said Stef was an outstanding example to other young women in a profession so often dominated by men. She received her award at the National Road Transport Association at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast recently. A 22-year-old driver-operator, Stephanie has made a huge impact on colleagues in a short period of time.
Colleagues say that Stephanie’s skills in safely securing heavy equipment for long haulage is meticulous and she applies the same approach to driving. Established in 2014, Fardell’s Heavy Haulage provides heavy haulage, general and bulk freight services, wet and dry plant hire, and earthmoving for the Central West. Role models inspire
at Orana Physical Culture’s Annual Club Championships
I
n any field of human endeavour, it’s fantastic to have role models that we can aspire to. In the popular dance sport of physical culture, National Ladies Champion Natalie Allan and Canberra teacher Helen Wilson are two such inspiring women. Both of these champions have a long association with “Physie”. And Orana Physical Culture were fortunate in being graced with their support (and judging skills) at their annual club championships held recently. The event saw the St Mary’s School hall packed almost to capacity as the various age groups and senior competitors performed d the 2023 syllabus to a large audience of appreciative spectators, parents, and supporters. Teachers Sophie Anderson, Kristy Hubbard, Sarah Campbell, Lauren O’Donnell, and Jaimee Shuttle also witnessed the results of three terms of selfless coaching g shining through in the confident presentations and well-applied performances. Club President Nick Hubbard offered his thanks to all of the dedicated members, their families, associates, the committee, and loyal supporters, who have worked d together to create this wonderful, connected, community of support. Corporate supporters the Regional Australia Bank, Transforce, the South Dubbo Tavern, and Peppercorn Child Care, were also thanked for their generous sponsorship. The club now looks forward to competing at the Central West Zone Finals, where selection for regional representation at the National Finals, is the next step in the club’s calendar year.

THUMBS UP! Thumbs up to Vivienne at the Estée Lauder counter at Myer. I could not have asked for better service, from a very happy 86-yearold customer. Makes the trip from Wellington worthwhile. Thumbs upto My Bakehouse at Delroy Park for great service, great coffee and the BEST curry pies. The whole experience was lovely, I would highly recommend it. Thumbs up to the young NRMA roadside assistance bloke for his exceptional service when my battery went flat. He even told me where to purchase a new battery at a great price. Thumbs up to customer services officer Matt at Aldi Dubbo. Great work ethic, he made my difficult purchase so easy. Thumbs up and a big thank-you to the wonderful nurses in the dialysis unit. They are always caring and go to great lengths to make sure you are okay, so thank you again. Thumbs up to everyone sharing their pet photos, what a great competition. Sausage sizzle for Can Assist HORIZONS Village recently held their monthly sausage sizzle for residents, with the event doubling as a wonderful fundraiser for Can Assist. Nearly 100 residents were in attendance and a significant amount of money was raised on the evening for this local charity that provides assistance for those battling cancer in Dubbo and surrounds, through financial assistance, practical support, and raising awareness. To help this worthy cause a large number of items were donated by residents, which produced the impetus for a very healthy sale of raffle tickets. The main raffle prize was a lovely quilt made and donated by resident Judy Honeyman, which was won by Jean Fields. A wonderful cushion, also made by Judy, was then won by June Coady. Farewell morning tea for decades-long Garvan osteo study participants THOUSANDS of locals helped in major medical research over three decades, and now it’s time to say “thank you”. The wonderful work of the medical research group – the Garvan Institute’s Dubbo Osteoporosis Study, which closed last year – is being remembered with a special morning tea on Tuesday, October 31. Thousands of locals who participated in the 33-year work of the study are being invited to come and say goodbye, a Garvin Institute spokesperson explained. “The Garvan wishes to publicly thank those amazing Dubbo people who have made this study the longest-running and the most-famous of its kind in the world,” the spokesperson said. “We are inviting those who
have participated to come together for a delicious morning tea and a ‘Q&A’ session with six on the panel to answer questions and let them know that even though the face-to-face clinic in Dubbo is no longer, the valuable research continues,” they added. The Garvan was founded in 1963, and is now one of Australia’s largest research institutions with approximately 750 scientists and support staff with osteoporosis – a crippling disease that can be fatal – affecting two out of three women, and one out of three men. The study began in April 1989 when Professor John Eisman, from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, decided to choose Dubbo as the centre for his study in osteoporosis for

From this group another genetic cohort study was established, including the families of the original participants, with about 13,500 subjects registered. Due to a lack of funding, however, the Dubbo Clinic was closed in February last year, with the

PAWS AND ORDER: MAINTAINING A PRISTINE HOME WITH INDOOR PETS
L
iving with our beloved furry friends is a joy beyond measure, but it often comes with a furry conundrum: the constant battle against pet-related messes. From shedding fur to muddy paw prints, pet owners face unique cleaning challenges.
Fear not, though, because with a few simple strategies, you can enjoy a clean and pet-friendly home that’s as inviting as it is hygienic.
1. Invest in the Right Tools Before you embark on your mission to maintain a spotless abode, equip yourself with the right cleaning tools. A good-quality vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter is a pet owner’s best friend. It will efficiently pick up pet hair and allergens from your floors and upholstery. 2. Groom Your Pets Regularly Prevention is key. Regular grooming sessions for your pets help reduce shedding and keep their fur in check.
Brushing your pets outdoors or in a designated area will significantly cut down on the amount of loose fur floating around your home.
3. Use Washable Covers Protect your furniture by using washable covers for couches and chairs. Opt for fabrics that are easy to clean and resistant to pet stains. These covers can be tossed in the washing machine whenever needed, ensuring your furniture stays fresh.
4. Establish Designated Pet Zones Train your pets to have designated areas within your home. Use gates or indoor pet pens to restrict them to specific rooms or spaces. This will limit the areas you need to clean and reduce the chances of mess spreading throughout the house.
5. Regular Floor Cleaning Sweep and mop your floors regular-
ly, especially in high-traffic areas. For stubborn pet stains and odours, use pet-friendly cleaning products designed to tackle these issues effectively without harming your furry companions.
6. Lint Rollers are Lifesavers Keep lint rollers handy for quick touch-ups. They work wonders in removing pet hair from clothing, upholstery, and curtains. Plus, they’re a simple and cost-effective solution.
7. Wash Pet Bedding Frequently Your pet’s bedding can accumulate odours and dirt. Ensure you wash their bedding regularly to maintain a fresh-smelling home. Look for pet-friendly detergents that are free from harsh chemicals.
8. Keep Their Toys Clean Don’t forget to clean your pet’s toys and accessories. Many of these items can harbour germs and odours. A quick
soak or wash in warm, soapy water can do wonders.
9. Air Purifiers and Fresheners Consider using air purifiers with HEPA filters to maintain clean indoor air quality. Additionally, pet-safe air fresheners can help eliminate lingering odours.
10. Embrace the Love and Mess Lastly, remember that living with pets means embracing a certain level of mess. While cleanliness is essential, so is the bond you share with your furry friends. A little pet hair or a muddy paw print here and there is a small price to pay for the unconditional love and companionship they provide. Incorporating these tips into your daily routine will help you strike a harmonious balance between a clean and pet-friendly home. So, go ahead, let your pets roam freely, and enjoy the comforts of a well-maintained home.

THE TOONS’ VIEWS
TIME WARP River crossings were an essential piece of Iron spikes infrastructure as settlers gradually headed west to settle western NSW. kept old However, in the early 1860s, there were still no bridges across the Macquarie River at Dubbo, “White with a Mr Charles Lloyd Purvis operating a punt and ferrying service, charging 1/- (one about $20 in today’s terms) per head to Bridge” in shilling, ford the river. place for 1V \PM 6;? 4MOQ[TI\Q^M )[[MUJTa ÅZ[\ discussed the cost of building a bridge, rather than investing in a newer punt system across decades the Macquarie. By 1864 the Legislative Council voted for £7000 to erect a bridge across the river.
The Government Gazette reported on April 27, 1864, that a tender for the bridge had been accepted by Andrew McCauley. The bridge, spanning the river from the foot of Bultje Street, was opened amid much fanfare on May 24, 1866. It was opened and christened twice on the same day with a Mrs Serisier and Miss Carroll representing the ladies of Dubbo, naming it the “Oxley Bridge”. The Royalist faction of the town, however, declared the name of the bridge as the “Albert Bridge”, after Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert. Interestingly, this toll bridge became known generally as
the “White Bridge”. By 1871, and with much X]JTQK XZW\M[\ QVKT]LQVO J]ZVQVO WN MٻOQM[ WN politicians, the toll was removed. In 1905 a new bridge was constructed across the Macquarie in the same location at the foot of Bultje Street and it retained the name of “The White Bridge”. Ultimately replacing it, was the LH Ford Bridge, that opened on September 26, 1969.

By GEOFF MANN EVER thought of trying your hand at the ancient and royal game of croquet? If you have, Dubbo Croquet Club is holding its very first Croquet Taster Session this Sunday, October 22. “We are extending the invitation to everyone who is interested in learning about this ancient game that has captured the hearts of people around the globe, since its inception in France over around 800 years ago,” President of the North Dubbo Club, Trish Shanks, said. Croquet started in France in the 11th century, under the name of ‘jeu de mail',” she explained. Since that time, it has gone around the world. “The British borrowed the game around 1300, and it has been modified over the centuries. “The Scots made golf out of it; the Irish turned it into croquet!” The come-and-try event is for everyone, Trish explained. “Our coaches and members will be on hand to introduce newcomers to the sport and show just how easy it is to learn. “You’ll get your hands on a mallet and hit a ball towards and through the hoops on our state-of-the-art quality synthetic surface,” Trish said with enthusiasm. The twilight event tips off at 6pm on Sunday with a sausage to be had from the sizzling barbecue. To learn more about the event and the game, go to: dubbocroquetclub. blogspot.com, or just pop over to 74 Brisbane St and say “hello".

By GEOFF MANN DUBBO’S local Dragon Boat Club has a remarkable record of growth – and of going above and beyond expectations – to find opportunities for its members to compete and enjoy this iconic sport. Most recent example of this, was the Australian Masters’ Championships described as: “a colourful and energizing gathering of like-minded sports-people from right across the nation.” The Outback Dragons competed in a total of 21 races over two days last weekend at the magnificent “AM Ramsay West Lakes Regatta Centre” in Port Adelaide, South Australia. Publicity Officer, Rhonda Betts, described the 24 local paddlers who made the long
trek south as being: “tired but ecstatic”. “We were so proud of ourselves; we really punched above our weight,” Rhonda said proudly. “For a small country club, a single identity, to do so well against others that were mostly combined regional or city crews, is a testament to the strength and commitment of our members,” she added. The Dragons competed in six different categories, each event over 200 metres. The point-score was added together over the regatta to decide the overall medal winners, and the Outback Dragons finished Top 10 in results for all categories. “Seven men were in our squad and, because of limited numbers, it restricted our options for some events, but we placed in every heat, either second, third, or fourth.
“We are incredibly proud of our results and certainly ‘flew the flag’ high for Dubbo,” Rhonda enthused. Some of the dragon boaters have since then extended their stay, so as to sample the delights of South Australian wineries and visit Kangaroo Island. “It is a long way to travel, so it’s fantastic to value-add and take some time to see another part of our beautiful country. “Many of us have travelled from the Ord River to the Gold Coast, from Sydney to Canberra, as well as overseas; we absolutely love it,” Rhonda added. The paddlers are now back on the Macquarie Wambuul River preparing for an upcoming Western Region Regatta to be held in Mudgee on Sunday, October 29.
RHONDA Betts is a champion sportswoman, indoors and out! Representing Australia earlier this year at the World Dragon Boating Championships in Thailand; last week she showed her style when her golden arms pulled her to three gold medals at the Australian Masters Indoor Rowing titles. Rhonda earned her spot in the Nationals after a gold medal haul in Sydney at the NSW Championships. In Adelaide she again pulled away from the competition, taking gold in the Masters 1000-metres and silver in the 500-metres. “I had nothing in the tank at the end of the 500-metres, but took heart knowing my favourite event was the next day,” Rhonda smiled. Sure enough, the determined athlete pulled off another gold in the 100-metres. “I like that one because its all over very quickly!” Rhonda is once again proving that like a good bottle of red wine.
Glenys enjoys first outing at “The Sundee” winning “Best of the Morning” Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ ON a perfect spring morning, a total of 33 players rolled-off the mats at North Dubbo Sporties, for Sunday bowls. Paul Martin, Steve Kelly, and Pete Ruzans had a great firstterm, recording a seven-shot lead over Mary Perry, Leo Balstad, and Karen Greenhalge. They were certainly not done either, as they used the second-term to calmly keep the others at bay
– just! Mary, Leo and Karen won five ends in a row to creep within one shot, but Paul, Steve, and Pete, refound their mojo to claim a hard fought 16-12 win. A two-shot lead after the first eight ends, gave small confidence to Chris Castlehouse, Frank Armstrong, and Kevin Scott. The second half was a different story, when Sue McCauley, Sue Armstrong, and John Cole, opened-up and took six of the ends, six and a total of nine shots, against Kevin’s
side’s two with 16-9 the final score to the Sues and JC! Ruby Stockings and Graham Ross led by three at the turnaround against Therese Gaio and Col Cottee with a five-count on end four to their favour, the springboard for a 19-9 win. It was a ‘run-away’ for the first eight ends, as Doc Livingston, Gaye Cottee, and Brian Jones blasted 15 shots onto their card against Ros Joseph, Vicki Hummel, and Col Dover. The second

half was more subdued, but Brian and his side kept attacking and adding another eight for a commanding 23-10 victory. The swinger for the morning was Gary Huggins, playing for Pete Bennison and Matt Quill, as well as Allan Stratford and Gordon Scott. Gordon backed-up a win on Saturday, to elevate his side during this game. He guided his mate to a two-shot lead at the break, and they chalked-up shots on seven of the eight sec-
ond half-ends. The final score of 21-10 earned second place for the morning. When it is not working, things can be frustrating. That was what Ron McCauley, John Kennedy, and Ian Humphries, had to deal with in their match-up with Glenys Hanigan, Eric Satchell, and Phil Knight. Glenys thoroughly enjoyed her first outing at “The Sundee”, smiling as she saw a 14-5 lead blow-out to a 30-9 win, the Best of the Morning!

Macquarie Valley cricketers turn back the clock
By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL “MUNNERS”, “Tub”, “Worm”, “Parrot”, t”, the list of nick-names went on-and-on, n, as the Macquarie Valley “boys” pulled on their pads and took strike in the NSW Veteterans Over 60 Championships last week. k. They were the backbone of the Maccquarie Valley team that took-out Divivision Two in the NSW State Veterans’ ns’ Championships. A total of 16 teams participated in the he first Veteran’s cricket tournament held ld in Dubbo, with the likes of Wayne Munnro, Steve Wheeler, Glen Armstrong, Steeve and Mike Parish, and Neil O’Connor, or, turning back the clock for some great fun un and competitive banter. Barry Everingham grew-up playing ng cricket with and against many of the he blokes he opposed on the four-day – “minus a necessary mental and physical health break on Wednesday” – and was rapt in the experience. “It was an absolute joy to run into blokes I’d played against over the years,” he said. “Being an old Tottenham boy who had stints in the Nyngan and Warren comps, I came across a lot of familiar faces, especially from Brewery Shield and some Macquarie Valley and Western Zone teams,” he added. Two of those who are still very active cricketers, are his old mentor, Ron Radford from Tottenham, and Don Skinner from Dubbo. “Those blokes are still very capable; Ronny turned 72 on the last day. “He is in the Australian Over 70s and we are very hopeful Donny will throw his hat into the ring for the 65s this year as well; they are proof that cricket can be a long-term passion as long as you keep active and never give up.” Barry is very hopeful Dubbo and surrounding towns next year will pull on the pads. Barry says it’s a wonderful thing for men’s mental health. Getting old mates together and making new friends is what it’s all about. “The Carnival will be held here for the next few years; the feedback from everybody has been absolutely outstanding; Dubbo Regional Council, the RSl CLub, all the accommodation providers, the Dubbo and District Cricket Association, local umpires, ground staff have all been amazing. “The curators have produced high-quality wickets and everybody is raving about the Lady Cutler and Victoria Park Ovals,” Barry enthused. He acknowledges Dubbo is one of the state’s premier venues for major carnivals. “We’ve seen it with all ages events over the years and the bloke, and hopefully women, will keep it firmly on the agenda for future championships in other age groups.” Barry was heading home to Foster to continue icing a dicky hamstring but, once the swelling goes, he knows he will be back in the nets preparing for the next Vets Cricket tournament and reflecting on the adopted motto: “#Hashtag Old Mates, New Mates and Men’s Shed on the Field!”

Last of our great 70s tennis stars “JA” Alexander comes to Dubbo
Dubbo Tennis Academy with John Alexander OAM and Academy Head Coach Brad Williams PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/KEN SMITH
By GEOFF MANN JOHN Alexander rose to become Australia’s premier tennis player in the 1970s, following in the footsteps of a seemingly never-ending honeypot of champions. As the last in the line of champion Aussie players, before the American College production line dominated tennis for 20 years, it wasn’t easy for the towering right-hander as “JA” – as he was affectionately-known – explained the pressure of having such huge boots to fill. “Every young player who came along as I did in the late 1960s was tagged ‘the next Hoad’ or ‘Laver', ‘Rosewall', ‘Roche', ‘Emerson’ or ‘Newcombe',” he explained. We had such a golden run when Harry Hopman was the captain-coach and trainer of the Davis Cup team; he took a very active role in developing the next generation and my first year under Harry was 1968.” John explained that this was the first year of “Open Tennis” until then, incredibly, major tournaments could only be competed for by amateurs, when the likes of Laver, Hoad and Rosewall returned from the exiled professional ranks to compete in the French and Wimbledon Championships. “I played with Phil Dent in the Davis Cup doubles at the end of the year,” he recalled. “We went down to the Americans Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, and Bob Lutz, and started travelling again in 1969 and lost to Mexico in Mexico in March; they were very hard to beat on home courts,” he added. The Davis Cup team was left to their own
devices to get home from that unsuccessful tie, a far cry from today’s standards. “I think that’s when the production of Australian players lucked-out, because we didn’t have the great Harry Hopman as our coach and mentor. “He was a father figure to us, but Australian Tennis wasn’t interested in keeping him on, and he went to the US and was enormously successful, involved in the developing careers of John McEnroe, Vitas Gerulaitis, and tens of others.” Harry started his Hopman Academy in Florida, and we began floundering here at home. “We got to the point when we didn’t have one male in the top 50 in the world in the late 90s and 2000s.” “We had the highest levels of participation in the world; we had the highest number of tennis courts per head of population in the world; we were the first country to have a professional coaching association. “We were the first country to have club tennis competitions; we had interclub, intercity, interstate contests, and everyone who could get a racquet in their hands, was on a court.” John says the constitution of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia (LTAA) aimed to popularise and perpetuate the participation in the sport of lawn tennis. It further stated, that it should reach-out to all players and encourage them to find a racquet and a court and get hitting. “I think we have fallen away because the focus has been on the ‘Cash Cow’ that is the Australian Open and small country clubs
and others trying to develop the game as a social interaction have been left behind. “The spending of the money hasn’t been spent in the right direction of increasing participation,” he believes. “The simple way to produce tennis players is, if you’ve got 10 players, you've got 10 chances of developing a champion. If you've got a hundred, you've got 10times the chance; if you’ve got 1000, you've got a hundred times and so on, so the numbers game is very important.” He says we should be concentrating on the participation in the sport, and that is why he accepted the invitation to come to Dubbo to celebrate such a momentous milestone. John acknowledged the dinner and the importance of reflection on 100 years, but he told Paramount President, Andrew Kierath, that it was just as important for him to hit up with some of the kids and try and impart his love for the game. “If I could get involved with players young and old who just wanted to get into tennis and improve their game, even just to be more competitive in their social games, it would help lay foundations for the future.” John was true to his word and, before the official celebrations got underway, he was an imposing but very graceful figure on the newly-lain synthetic courts. “I know Dubbo was the home of the NSW Sandcourt Championships for over 50 years. “Many of my peers and players like Roche, Emerson, Laver, Mal Anderson, Bob Hewitt, Mark Edmonson, and so many others, told me what a huge event it was.” The local
courts proved a fine testing ground for our best and brightest young juniors, he added. “Frank Sedgman and Harry, brought groups of young players across the mountains to play on these courts and, of course, many friendships were forged as the locals went all out to show the ‘pros’ they could be just as good, if they were given the opportunities.” He spoke about Jan O’Neill (Lehand) who won a NSW title in Dubbo as a 12-year-old playing barefoot “so she could slide better” and of the many incredible tennis stars who had come from country areas. “Jan was an amazing player from Grenfell who won many state and Australian titles. Unfortunately, she was born in the same era as a woman named Margaret Smith then but, who ironically married a man named ‘Court'. “She almost owned the tennis arenas around the world and was the sole reason Jan never won a major championship.” JA still plays socially in Sydney with his partner. “We would love to get a group of our members together and come-out to Dubbo. Maybe call in at Bathurst, Orange, and Parkes along the way, have a few nights and reignite the passion for the game with which we grew up.” From all reports John Alexander was a hit with tennis fans. He made everyone feel welcome and important and congratulated those who had the foresight a 100 years ago and the tenacity of this generation to maintain the love of tennis.
