By LANA EATHER
arried duo Mal and Amy, and their two young girls, have recently opened Hungry Mate Raw Pet Food at 103 Bourke St, Dubbo. The couple saw a need to supply a selection of raw pet food within the Dubbo region, and jumped at the chance to open their own pet food store. Raw pet foods have many benefits for our furry friends. Advantages to adding raw pet foods to your pet’s diet can include better digestion, good oral health, healthy coats, reduced skin irritations and assist in weight management. Eager to fill this demand Mal and Amy have endeavoured to supply a range of meats including venison, kangaroo, goat, rabbit, hare, lamb, beef, pork, chicken and an assortment of mixes. Hungry Mate offers ready-to-go mixes for those wanting a complete meal for their pets, which includes a collection of vegetables, fruits and offal. All meats are from local suppliers, and processed quickly for a fresh supply. All items can be purchased fresh or frozen in 1kg, 2kg and 5kg cryovac bags. Mal also offers wholesale orders for over 100 kilograms. There is also a large selection of dehydrated goods – with a lot more coming in the next few weeks! Hungry Mate Raw Pet Food is currently open Tuesday to Friday 9am-5.30pm, and Saturday mornings 9am-1pm. With great customer service and friendly faces, the Hungry Mate team will ensure your pets have the best nutritious food and treats available.

Snakes not the only threat to pets this springtime Snakes can be deadly to pets so it’s important as a pet owner to be vigilant and watch out for snakes, particularly if any have been spotted in your area. Living in an urban environment doesn’t give you immunity; snakes can be found in the most unlikely places. But while we all know the dangers to our outdoor dogs and cats from deadly snakes coming out of hibernation in spring, they’re not the only threats to our pets in the warmer months. Infections, allergies to plants and pollen, parasites, and increased chances of heartworm are only some of the dangers out there in the big world. Don’t let these unpleasantries keep you and your pet stuck indoors, however. Know what to look out for and what to do if your pet does have an encounter with one of these potentially harmful hazards. Believe it or not, one of the most common warm weather problems for pets is allergies. Just like hu-

mans, some pets can be allergic to the pollens and other minute airborne matter that floats around in the warmer weather. While these allergies in humans tend to cause runny noses, sneezing, and watery eyes in humans, they often cause skin irri-
tations in our pets. As the weather becomes warmer and your pet spends more time outdoors exploring their environment, they may develop a reaction to new plants and pollens in the air that haven’t previously affected them.
Common signs of springtime allergies in pets include: Excessive scratching Red and irritated skin Licking and chewing paws Ear infections Spring is also the breeding season for ticks which, although not commonly found in the Golden West, can be a problem if you take your pets away on holidays. Ticks are at their most prevalent during spring and summer, including the deadly paralysis tick that inhabits the eastern coastline within 100km of the beach, all the way from Melbourne in the south to the tip of Queensland in the north. Because they are spread by mosquitoes, the transmission of heartworm also increases during the warmer months and peaks in summer, in line with the mosquito population. The best way to avoid the serious health problems that are brought on by heartworm is to administer preventa-
tive medication. Even bees and wasps, that proliferate during spring and summer, are an attraction for inquisitive pets who can’t keep their little noses and mouths away from danger. Bee and wasp stings can range from painful swelling to a life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. A number of spring flowers can also be toxic to pets. Avoid planting toxic bulbs such as hyacinths, tulips, daffodils and certain lilies. Often both the flowers and the bulbs can cause an upset stomach, or worse, so you will need to be vigilant if you have either a nibbler or a digger. Also around the garden, because of their different physiology, pesticides and fertilisers can also be incredibly dangerous for domestic pets. Try to keep your animals out of harm’s way at all times this spring and summer.

Get a pet that will love you a lifetime from Animal Welfare League RATHER than forking out thousands for a miniature cavoodle, how about helping a loving pooch find a new home from the Animal Welfare League (AWL)? The local AWL branch recently held a dog adoption day at Petbarn Dubbo, to give visibility to some of the pets looking for forever homes. Because one of the sad facts about our society is that there are always more dogs and cats being surrendered, than there are new owners to take them in, local worker Janet Rose said. “We take animals surrendered from the local pound and re-home them,” Janet explained. “But we are getting more surrender requests than people able to take them in.” With their main facility at Kemps Creek on Sydney’s south-western edge, the group share both dogs and cats and try and find them new owners. “We take as many as we can from the pound when they’re at full capacity; we also get a lot of private surrender requests as well,” Janet revealed. “We’re all volunteers, and the animals are fostered with our people, that’s why we ask people to
please consider adoptions when they’re looking for a new pet.” With some dog pedigree breeds like Samoyed costing up to $10,000, and cats up to $5000, she adds that an AWL rescue pet also makes very good economic sense. “All the pets have had their vet work done; they’re all desexed, micro-chipped, vaccinated, and have ben treated for fleas and worms,” Janet added. “The other thing is, when you adopt from AWL, you get free lifetime registration for your pet.” She has been working for the group since they set up shop locally only a couple of years ago, and said they are always looking for new supporters. “We’d certainly like some more volunteers who’d be willing to take a pet until we found it a home,” Janet said. “At the moment, we’ve got a dog that has just had 11 puppies, and quite a few mother cats with litters of kittens, that would be able to be adopted next month.” Like to adopt a pet or get involved with AWL’s good works? ever having learnt to play an instrument is one of the most common regrets for many of us. Well, here’s your chance, because Macquarie Conservatorium is throwing open its doors this Sunday, October 29, with all their different music programs on show free at their Open Day! “It’s a great opportunity to come along and see our students in action, talk to our teachers, and find out more about what you can do in music,” the Con’s Business Manager Alison Arnold said. “We invite people of all ages to come along and see what we offer in music education and activities at the Conservatorium,” she added. Visitors to Macquarie Conservatorium’s Open Day will enjoy performances by Conservatorium students, ensembles, school and community bands, instrument demonstrations by Conservatorium teachers, and ‘Come and Try Music’ for pre-schoolers and kindy kids. There will be refreshments on sale and information about all the tuition programs and music activities available. “At Open Day, there will be once again instrument stations where our teachers will show people the different instruments and talk to them about what’s involved in

learning an instrument,” Alison explained. “Then all those instruments will be seen and heard in the casual performances we have happening throughout the day, ranging from primary band students to our adult string ensemble, piano duets, wind trios and vocalists.” Also, the day includes two of the Con’s all-ages performing groups taking to the stage: Macquarie Intermediate Band and Macquarie Big Band. “Younger kids aged 3–6 years with their parents can also drop into our Early Childhood Music Room from 2.30pm and try some of the fun activities we do in our MusicPlay and MusicMakers classes.” Macquarie Conservatorium offers a wide range of music programs for youth and adults in the Orana region, as part of the network of NSW Regional Conservatoriums. With a staff of specialist music teachers based in Dubbo, Macquarie Conservatorium programs include early childhood music, instrumental, vocal and theory tuition for all ages, ensembles, music programs for schools, concerts and workshops with visiting artists. The Conservatorium’s Open Day is on Sunday, October 29, from 1–4pm.

In 2002 Queensland ex-farmers Brian and Nerida decided to run a raffle to help other farmers facing hard times. This simple act transformed into Aussie Helpers. Aussie Helpers then went on to become “one of Australia’s largest farming support charities, providing tangible and immediate support and strengthening rural communities across Australia.” Today, the couple’s daughter Tash Kocks continues their legacy as the chief executive officer of Aussie Helpers. Aussie Helpers commenced operations in Dubbo in 2014, and has occupied their depot in 2/7 McGuinn Crescent since 2018. Tash passionately told Dubbo Photo News: “We provide financial, emotional and physical support. Every case is different, and we help case by case. Sometimes this means food hampers, sometimes aid with fuel or water, or just a conversation. It is the connections we make that are important. Our mission is to help farmers, farming families, and communities survive through the tough times so they can thrive in the good.” Debra Bell is the Dubbo contact for Aussie Helpers, and has been running a drop-in ser-

vice each Thursday from 8am-4pm at the Dubbo depot. She welcomes members of the community and farmers to make contact… even for a friendly chat and cuppa. Aussie Helpers provides a range of services to ensure Australian farmers and farming communities are supported. In the upcoming months, Aussie Helpers will be running a Water Drive to assist locations such as the Marra School that will have no available water. Donations of water will be sought, and can be delivered to 2/7 McGuinn Cres, Dubbo. Run in conjunction with World Mental Health Day on October 10, Aussie Helpers conducted a two-day free Mental Health First Aid training for farmers and members of the Dubbo community. “It is our first time delivering this training at Dubbo. We want members of the community and farmers to know how to support each other,” Tash said. Tash is supported with a strong team including Operations Manager and course presenter Natalie Peterson. “As conditions worsen, Mental Health First Aid skills have never been more important and could save lives, families, and communities,” Tash concluded.

Ragu at the zoo: top chef Stefano Marvello, bringing his acclaimed Italian cooking masterclass and two mouth-watering feasts to Taronga Western Plains Zoo in November. PHOTO: SUPPLIED.
WHO doesn’t love Italian food? Well, Dubbo is going to get a double delight with a couple of culinary events next month. This is because top chef Stefano Marvello is bringing his acclaimed Italian cooking masterclass and two mouth-watering feasts to Taronga Western Plains Zoo in November. The unusual partnership between epicurean delights and our wild residents was born out of them both winning 2022 NSW Tourism Awards, with Taronga Western Plains Zoo bagging the state’s top major attraction gong for the second year in a row, while Stefano’s Italian Cooking Experience, based in the South-
ern Highlands, received the Gold Award for Best New Tourism Business. “We first met Stefano at the 2022 NSW Tourism Awards, and our teams just clicked,” Zoo Director Steve Hinks, explained. “We both share a passion for regional tourism excellence, so it seemed like an obvious partnership,” he added. The weekend kicks off with a five-course degustation menu on Friday, November 3, before an exclusive cooking workshop on the Saturday, followed by an Italian long lunch on Sunday. All events will be hosted in the picturesque grounds of Taronga Western Plains Zoo… but not in
locations you might expect. “I am super-excited to spend time at Taronga Western Plains Zoo – it’s so iconic – and to get the Stefano Marvello Cooking Experience on the road,” Stefano said. “Folks should attend as first and foremost we’re about having a good time with food and wine, and we’re excited to showcase local producers, and the idea of doing an Italian cooking class in the zoo is just crazy!” Stefano added. Places are limited, so to avoid missing out, go to: www.123tix. com.au/events/40429 (Note: Unfortunately, this event is not able to cater for gluten-free or vegan diners.)
Come to the Garvan Osteoporosis Study farewell morning tea THE Garvan Institute of Medical Research will hold a special event to express appreciation for the participants of the groundbreaking Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Study. The ‘Dubbo Gratitude Morning Tea’ will be held on Tuesday, October 31, at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre. The study, which concluded in February 2022, revealed invaluable insights into the progression and factors influencing osteoporosis, a debilitating disease affecting two out of three women, and one out of three men. Initiated in 1989 under the guidance of Professor John Eisman at Garvan, the Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Study included 5000 volunteers from Dubbo, who regularly underwent bone mineral density tests and lifestyle assessments every two years, making it the longest-running and most-renowned study of its kind globally. The study was expanded to include the families of the original participants, in an initiative termed the ‘Genetic Study’. In total, genealogical data has been collected on more than 13,000 individuals related to the Dubbo participants. “The invaluable contribution of the people of Dubbo have made this study a success. Because it is so longterm, the study has allowed us to track what happens to people before and after a fracture, how risk factors evolve and how changes in lifestyle and treatment can lead to different outcomes,” says Professor Jacqueline

Center, Head of the Clinical Studies and Epidemiology Lab at Garvan. “Indeed, with the wealth of information collected, ongoing analyses are continuing to reveal new insights into this condition. We are so thankful to the Dubbo community for having enabled this work that will help improve bone health outcomes for many years to come.” The event is on at 10.30am with attendees not only enjoying a delightful morning tea, but also having the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with a distinguished panel including Professor John Eisman, Professor Tuan Nguyen, Professor Jacqueline Center, and Dr Dana Bliuc. CARDS AND CARE KITS HELP FAMILIES FLEEING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Donating shopper cards as part of welfare bag 'Care Kits' for those fleeing domestic violence. Jade West, Rachel Lyster, Jake Gordon, Rhiannon Tonniges, Angela Coker, Sally Barraclough, and Matt Sharkey. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/KEN SMITH.
By DAVID DIXON FAMILIES fleeing domestic violence often leave with only the clothes on their back. To support victims in this situation, Dubbo TAFE Community Service students are putting together ‘Care Kits’ for those in need. Doing their bit to support this project, Dubbo Violence Prevention Collective (DVPC) recently provided a total of 100 $20 shopping gift cards from a major retailer, to be included in the kits. The students are aiming to give back to the community and, hopefully, improve the wellbeing of those experiencing hardships including domestic vio-
lence, sexual assault, or homelessness, collective spokesman Mark Noonan explained. “Often when women, children, and even men, are leaving domestic violence situations, they do so in a hurry, and aren’t able to take much with them. This is an initiative by the TAFE students, and we thought we could also help,” Mark explained. “That’s the idea of making up these welfare bags, the sort of things you wouldn’t have if you were leaving in a hurry… toothbrushes, toothpaste, that sort of thing, plus the shopper cards,” he added. The TAFE students are initially producing 100 of the bags for use through-
out the region which, unfortunately, has its fair share of these type of social issues, Mark revealed. “We offer a number of services for people in this situation, unfortunately, Dubbo crime stats for reported incidents show it’s a major problem in the district. We’re mostly top 10 in the state, and often in the top five so, yeah, it is a problem in this region,” he added. While domestic violence is a complex issue often related to poverty, alcohol abuse, unemployment, and inter-generational trauma, DVPC and the Dubbo TAFE Community Service students are at least providing practical support for those in our community, in immediate crisis.

FOCUS ON FLETCHERS
Solid career started at 15 years-old
After leaving school at 15, Fletcher International Export supervisor Troy Walker was told he’d amount to nothing yet today he is a qualified supervisor working for a multi-national conglomerate and is pictured with the bales of sheep skins his team has expertly prepared for export to the world. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS
By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY WHEN Troy Walker left school at age 15, he got the message loud and clear his decision guaranteed that he’d amount to nothing, but fortunately for Troy, a part time job he had at Fletcher International Exports became full-time, where he received support and encouragement that brought out the best in him. Troy can’t recall if he was the youngest employee at the time, but it’s not uncommon for early school leavers to walk through Fletchers’ front door and emerge a few years later, grounded, mature and confident. Now aged 33, Troy holds a Cert IV in management and the position of supervisor for the multi-national conglomerate where he is responsible for the wellbeing and guidance of staff under his care,
while also mentoring many international workers who arrive without experience, sometimes with limited English and are emotionally far from home. “I was in Year 10 and yeah, always getting in trouble a bit for fighting and I was working out here at the same time, then the principal turned around one day and said ‘school’ or ‘work’ and I said, see you later; I was 15,” Troy explained to Dubbo Photo News. “I was probably one of the youngest out here, but I found it pretty good, because I had a good supervisor and there were different nationalities and I was learning about their life, how they grew up, it was very interesting; it definitely made me more mature.” One of the first jobs Troy was appointed to was working with the skins and learning wool classing, and while explaining the pro-
cess he draws attention to the fact that all parts of each animal entering the abattoir is not wasted, including the bales of salted skins he’s pictured with, which are prepared by one of Troy’s teams using a highly mechanised process, and which could one day return to our retail stores as shoe soles, items of clothing, paint rollers and more. “So basically, you’re sending different breeds and lengths to whichever processing shed requires them here, and some can be shredded and used for different biproducts, there’s really no waste, even the tallow and oils are taken out of the skin.” Troy was selected to become a supervisor after completing a forklift licence and working in that role. After this, Troy was offered the position of leading hand before ultimately being promoted to the role of supervisor.
“I gave that a go and I got coaching and mentoring then completed a Cert IV management course at TAFE which did surprise me, it made me more focused and to get that qualification was a privilege, considering I was told when leaving school that I’d be nothing,” he said. Nineteen years into his career at Fletchers, Troy says the chance to work outdoors has big appeal and interacting, talking, and training his co-workers means he’s not stuck doing just one thing, and gets to be everywhere. Most employees can try different roles and part of Troy’s job is to help them decide on work to suit them, drawing on his own many years of experience of what works with different types of people. “When I start to talk to them and get to know them, I talk to them about what they want to do,
and you can tell whether someone’s just going to be able to pick a certain job up, or if you think they don’t want to be here, then I work with them and help steer them to something where they’ve got more of a challenge and they’ve got responsibility, and that can really just change people’s perspective,” he said. Born and bred in Dubbo, Troy dedicates his down time to rebuilding motorbikes, which in some way resembles the rebuild he did with the end of his schooling, turning his working life one with a respected qualification and earned responsibility. “Yeah, I love my motorbikes, riding and re-building them; all dirt bikes, but I’m thinking of getting a nice Harley and doing it up, not just to buy a new one but I’ll get a second-hand and re-build it like new, then I’ll ride it,” Troy said.

Census snapshot shows changes in agricultural workforce AUSTRALIA’S agricultural workforce is steadily growing and changing, with more women and young people joining the sector, according to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES). The ABARES Insights Snapshot of Australia’s agricultural workforce shows the changing state of the agricultural workforce based on data from the 2021 Census of Population and Housing. ABARES Executive Director Dr Jared Greenville said it was interesting to see the subtle shifts in the data which covers employed people aged 15 years and older whose main job held in the week prior to Census night was in agriculture. “Between the 2016 Census and the 2021 Census, we’ve seen more people overall working in agriculture – 239,093, which is an increase of 4.7%,” Dr Greenville said. “We’ve also seen a slight rise in the proportion of women (to 33%), young people (to 25%) and people from culturally and linguistically diverse back-
grounds (to 13%) in the agricultural workforce over the same period. “Around 1.8% of workers in the agricultural sector were Indigenous, and 1.6% had a disability that meant they required assistance with core activities. “In 2021, 46% of people working in agriculture were employed in sheep, beef cattle and grain farming, which is a slight contraction since 2016,” he said. “Most people who work in agriculture live in regional areas (81 per cent) and the majority (68 per cent) were in full-time employment. “Australia’s farm population is constantly changing. I’m sure plenty of people in the agricultural sector will be heartened to see more young people getting involved in the industry. “The gradual trends seen in the statistics are a reflection of changes in agriculture and Australia’s workforce more broadly,” Dr Greenville said. The ABARES Insights: Snapshot of Australia’s agricultural workforce report is available on the bureau’s website.

Orana Gardens is a not for profit organisation that pride itself in giving the best personalised care to all its residents. Residents living with dementia are living with a progressive decline in their memory, intellect, rationality, physical and social skills which has severe impact on their lives and those around them. At Orana Gardens, we are proud to provide cares for residents living dementia and ensuring they are living with love, dignity and respect. In the spirit of dementia awareness week, we made a collaborative decision to do a “Dementia Awareness Day”. The aim of the day is to raise the much-needed awareness for our residents
living with dementia. Our Awareness Day consists of information about dementia, showcasing our beautiful unit and increase interaction between our residents without dementia and our residents living with dementia. Statistically, Dementia is now the second leading cause of death of all Australian and more than twothirds of aged care residents have moderate to severe cognitive impairment which is an alarming number. We would like to thank DANS and Seniors Rights for their information stands. In addition, we would like to thank our residents and families for being a part of the day and staff for assisting and making the day beautiful and memorable. And Thumbs Up to our kids who are learning that plastic and other rubbish left on the ground can end up in our river. Thumbs up to the many farmers in our region who are adopting sustainable practices, working to combat climate change, protect biodiversity, and ensure food security for future generations. Isn’t it great to see the old image of farmers is fading, as more and more city people realise our farmers are actively looking after our lands.

Happy 100th birthday Victor!
V
ictor Timsans was born in Latvia on 10th November 1923. Victor was in the military in Latvia in telecommunications. He immigrated to Australia from Latvia in 1949 when he was 26 years old. Victor and his wife June used to live in Sydney before moving to Dubbo. They had been married for 61 years when she sadly passed away. Victor has three children: Sonya, Paul and John, as well as a son in law, two daughters in laws and two grandsons. Sonya (daughter) and her husband Rick visit all the time and his other children come and visit when they are able to. His favourite music is 50’s, 60’s music and André Rieu. He enjoys chocolate, lemonade and likes to watch tennis and football. Victor still has his accent from Latvia, loves being surrounded by family and people, being in the garden, sitting in the sun, he still lifts 5kgs of weights every morning and enjoys his beer.

Quilt gift honours Ivor’s father who showed supreme valour QUILTS are a wonderful way of providing warmth, comfort, and security, at difficult times for all of us. They’re also a means of honouring those who have served their country, with hand-made blankets now being lovingly created by volunteers nationwide for Quilts of Valour Australia (QOVA). Just such a ceremony was held in Dubbo recently, when Pam and Chris Bellhouse presented a “Quilt of Valour” to local Ivor Trapman, whose father Walter died a few months after returning home after being a prisoner of war of the Japanese on the Thai-Burma Railway. “We’re representatives for Quilts of Valour NSW, and we travel around and present the quilts to returned and serving personnel and their families,” Pam explained. “But it’s not just to honour the veterans, but also the vets who are no longer with us.” There are now hundreds of generous quilt makers

contributing to the cause, and, since QOVA began, more than 3000 of the lovingly-created quilts have been awarded to veterans impacted by their service to their country. “We’re the only regional representatives in NSW, but we have coordinators in each state,” Pam said. “It was wonderful thing

The beautiful design presented to Ivor – made by quilter Christina Morris – was presented at the Veterans’ Drop-In Centre where Ivor spoke proudly of his family’s history, which he is currently researching. “There were seven boys and three girls, and they all survived World War II. Two others were prisoners of war in Germany, but they all came back home, though my father was in terrible shape.” His father, he found, came from a family that had a proud history of serving their country during its darkest hours. “They were all away during the war, it must have been a terrible time for their parents. But my grandmother actually climbed the flagpole to put up the flag when they all came home,” he laughed.

GROWING YOUR VERY OWN VEGETABLE OASIS IN THE BACKYARD
with Karen Chant from Chant and Co
Open Home Etiquette: Dos and Don’ts Navigating open homes efficiently is vital for potential property buyers. Here are some tips Ask Questions: Take advantage of the agent’s presence to ask about the market, a price guide, vendor requirements and preferred settlement time.
I

Time Investment: Take your time evaluating the property during the set open home duration. It’s a major decision; weigh pros and cons thoughtfully. Photographs (with Permission): Capture areas of interest with agents consent to aid in decision-making. Bring Company: Family or friends can provide additional insights, but ensure they follow open home etiquette. Address concerns privately with the agent if interested. Don’t Be Overly Comfortable: While imagining living there is encouraged, avoid sitting on furniture, lying on beds, or consuming food and drinks. n this part of the world where the e sun generously bestows its golden rays, cultivating a vegetable garden at home can be both a delightful and nourishing venture. Whether you reside in a bustling regional city or the serene landscapes of rural NSW, the prospect of stepping into your backyard to pick ick fresh, crisp veggies is an unbeatable joy. Here’s a guide to nurturing a thriving vegetable patch in your home garden. 1. Selecting the Right Spot: Finding the perfect spot is paramount. Your vegetable patch needs a sunny, well-drained location. Ideally, choose a site that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily. Keep in mind that leafy greens can tolerate a bit of shade. 2. Preparing the Soil: Good soil is the backbone of a successful vegetable garden. Enrich your soil with organic compost, well-rotted manure, and other organic materials to provide necessary nutrients. Conduct a soil test to determine its pH and nutrient levels.
3. Choose the Right Vegetables: Consider the climatic conditions of your region while selecting vegetables. In different parts of Australia, you can grow a vast array of veggies ranging from classic favourites like tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots to unique native varieties such as Warrigal greens and Samphire. 4. Planting Seasonally: Align your planting with the seasons. In summer,
opt for heat-loving veggies like capsicums and eggplants. During coolcu er e seasons, leafy greens, peas, and root vegetables will thrive. 5. 5 Watering Wisely: In I our climate, efficient watering is key. ke Install a drip irrigation system or a soaker hose to conserve water. Remember to water the plants early in Reme the morning or late in the afternoon to prevent evaporation. 6. Pest Control: Protect your garden from pests naturally by encouraging beneficial insects like ladybirds and lacewings, which feed on common pests. Companion planting can also be an effective method to deter pests. 7. Harvesting: Harvest your vegetables at their peak ripeness for the best flavour and nutrient content. Often, continuous harvesting encourages more production. 8. Composting: Recycle your kitchen scraps and garden waste to make compost, replenishing the soil’s nutrients and maintaining its health. As you nurture your garden, you’ll not only witness a bounty of fresh vegetables but also enjoy the therapeutic journey of gardening. With patience and passion, your home garden will be a sanctuary of health and vitality, nurturing both body and soul.

Kindergarten at St Mary’s Parish School Warren held an amazing market stall on Thursday September 14. Family and friends were given play money & children charged the guests $1 for all the goodies they had baked, and for the flower arrangements they had made. Kindergarten counted back change and added money up when items were sold. Kinder did a wonderful job of setting up the market. The market was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Lots of hands-on learning!

OUT ON A LIMB
ARIES: Make sure you have your smartphone and GPS fully charged and programmed before hitting the road. You’ll avoid confusion and be able to keep in touch with important people. TAURUS: You might finally receive a sum of money that’s due to you. What’s more, you could receive a refund or insurance payout. Justice will be on your side. GEMINI: You’ll have the opportunity to be at the forefront of an exciting experience. Your actions will help move things forward. At work, you’ll have all the tools you need to obtain financing or get a raise. CANCER: The week will start off chaotic. You’ll probably need a second cup of coffee to avoid procrastinating. However, a little daydreaming could help boost your creativity. LEO: Your colleagues or friends could ask you to organise most of the plans when you’d rather take a back seat. You’ll impress others by trusting your skills. VIRGO: If your company is undergoing structural changes, you could be worried about your future within it. However, you have a good chance of being promoted to an upper management position. LIBRA: You could suddenly be inspired by a training program, which will lead to an exciting new career. If you’re a spiritual person, you’ll feel the need to deepen your convictions. SCORPIO: You’ll be more sensitive and easily moved than usual this week. Although change can induce anxiety, it can also be liberating. You’ll take the necessary steps to purchase a property. SAGITTARIUS: It’s important to gather all the necessary information before making a decision, even if you’re under pressure to act quickly. Take the time to consider your choice carefully before making it public. CAPRICORN: You’ll have a lot of work to do this week. However, you may come down with a cold that could compromise your productivity. Be sure to take better care of your health, and don’t neglect your sleep. AQUARIUS: You’ll draw attention to yourself for a particular reason. Fortunately, you’ll use your playful side to lighten the mood. You may be told a secret that leaves you perplexed. PISCES: You may need to perform some home repairs before summer. If you’re thinking about moving, make a plan to ease the transition. A family member may cause you concern.

Flowers in Gilgandra fund education By LANA EATHER Gilgandra Garden Club conducted a popular Open Garden Day on Saturday, October 14, with a selection of eight beautiful gardens to browse on a gorgeous sunny spring day. The event’s entry fees proceeds are donated to the Gilgandra & District Education Foundation. For over 20 years the GIlgandra & District Education Foundation has been assisting local students to attend tertiary education. It is a charitable organisation with a Country Education head office located in Orange. Many students that access the Country Education funding, also go on to gain further corporate sponsorship. The Open Gardens displayed an array of gardening designs with Australian native plantings, formal hedges, secret gardens, herb gardens and lawn areas. It was a treat to attend with morning tea, lunch and plants available for purchase. Kerry Jackson and Joyce Lockhart.

Great start for Dubbo Cycle Club for the new track season Contributed by DUBBO CYCLE CLUB DUBBO Cycle Club has had a fantastic start to the new 2023/24 track season. Riders of all ages – from tiny tots to seniors – got involved; and it all kicked-off with some thrilling races. The evening racing sessions begin with the youngest cyclists in Dubbo, the tiny tots. We also celebrated the participation of Ruben Allen Baker and Louie Gibbs as they raced with us for the first time, welcoming them as the newest members of the Dubbo Cycle Club “Green Machine”. The first race of the night was claimed by Elsie Richardson, who started from the back-mark. Alfie Allen-Baker then finished in second place, closely-followed by Walter Hedger and Isabelle Richardson. In Division 1, the opening race was won by Euan Billsborough, with Tommy Tanswell in second place. In the second race for the tiny tots, Elsie once again took the victory, with Louie narrowly missing-out and, in a thrilling finish, Alfie and Ruben followed closely behind. The senior riders then held their opening scratch race, with Robbie Lennox claiming first place in D-Grade. C-Grade was dominated

with Tommy taking second place. In C-Grade, Sidney Pickering outperformed his father, Harry, with Jason Billsborough in third. In B-Grade, Darrell Wheeler once again clinched the victory, with Ben O'Brien progressing to second place. Dubbo Photo News October 26-November 1, 2023
Gil downs Dubbo Where has the year gone? Chrissie function at the RSL Club! in Brewery Shield Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ WHERE has the year gone? it is only five weeks until the Combo bowlers wind-out their year with the annual Christmas function, this year held at the RSL Club. Some of the results of last week were better than expected from the 40 bowlers. The closest of the games, involved Doc Livingston with Greg Bown and Pete Sinclair. They lived up to the pre-match hype as a strong combination during the first stanza of the game, leading Sue Armstrong, Rob Pfeiffer, and Graham Ross by three shots. By end 11, the chasers had levelled the scores, only to suffer a four-shot count against them. A couple more ends, and the situation changed again as Graham ‘s team squared the ledger and, this time, they took control till the finish. Sue, Rob, and
Graham, the winners 17 to 14, happy to turn a threeshot deficit into a three-shot win. Ron McCauley, with Pete Bennison and Julie Brown, also had a rough first eight ends, winning just three ends and banking a mere four shots. Mary Perry, Eric Satchell, and Alex Rae, grabbed a quadruple to take a six-shot advantage they carried into the second half. They were relentless, adding a six count on 10 and winning six more of the ends to rocket to a 26-shots to six victory. That effort earned Mary, Eric, and Alex, the Best of the Morning. Glenis Hanagan, in just her second Sundy Bowls, had Therese Gaio and Col Dover as her partners. The trio bowled well and grabbed a three-shot lead at the turnaround. Despite their growing confidence, opponents Pat Sherwin and Allan Stratford
relied on their Skip Gordon Scott to lift them to a memorable come-from-behind win, 17-11. Leo Balstad and John McKenzie, with Roy Frost, also jumped to a huge lead of 10 shots against Sue McCauley, Frank Armstrong, and Brian Jones, who were left to search for their normal form. The leaders saw-off any challenge and finished with tails up in a 23-10 win, second best of the morning. Not surprisingly, Paul Martin and Paul Wooldridge were happy to have the experience of Anthony Coe to help them through against Terry Millar, Ian Humphries, and Al Andriske. They monstered the first eight ends, pouring on 12 shots to help them through the second part of the game and finishing-up with 19 against their opponents, nine. Domination or destruction? Either word might
describe the outcome of the game played by Daphne Dunbar, Ray Strawhan, and Phil Knight. Ruthless might be another! John Kennedy, Vicki Hummel, and Paul Goodstat, gave all they had but, when “luck or fortune” is against you, it is very frustrating! Daphne, Ray, and Phil had 11 shots on the board after eight ends, and seemingly could do no wrong. That was the case after drinks when they piled on another 10. John, Vicki and Paul won 21-11. Roger Sherwin and Pete Ruzans then took-on Ruby Stockings and John Cole in pairs. Such was the intensity of the contest, it was the last game completed. A fourcount and a couple of triples, helped Roger and Pete to a skim lead of four and, during the second eight, they added a five and four doubles to complete their game with 24 shots. Ruby and John ended-up with 10.

In reply, the Country Club Cricket champions lost just three wickets. Matt Everest on 55 not-out; and big-hitting Ash Hazelton on 37; set the platform, while young Dubbo all-rounder Aydan Hunt claimed 3/26. In the other Brewery Shield clash, Sam Simmons’ unbeaten 62 was the shining light in Bourke’s seven wicket win against Narromine.

By GEOFF MANN “THEN let the games begin” – Alice, from “Alice in Wonderland” Mallets in hand and hoops set-out for competition, Dubbo Croquet Club members also welcomed newcomers for “A Taste of Croquet” last Sunday. The fun started at six o’clock with more than 40 curious initiands, heading to the courts in North Dubbo for a free sampler game. Croquet Club members were ecstatic with the turn-up. “The interest in our sport, far exceeded our expectations,” Coach and mentor, Ben Vang, enthused.
“This kept every one of our coaches and helpers busy all evening,” he added. Ben says they have been very busy throughout the year promoting and encouraging this fun and fitness-enhancing sport that was introduced to Dubbo more than a century ago. “We had two ‘Market Day’ promotion stands; we had a small strip of synthetic grass, and a special hoop set up for people to have a hit, and handed-out invitations to come for the full-scale try-out last Sunday evening,” Ben explained. “Many people were taken in by the skill and techniques used in the game, especially
the way it is possible to jump over an opponent ball, to score a point.” Tricia Shanks, a longterm croquet player and former Club President, was similarly-impressed. “We had a large turnout from the Dubbo community, and a great evening was had by the 40 people who attended. The club is now following up with half of the people that showed interest in the game of croquet; the ABC broadcast a preview of the event, that helped attract a wider group of inquirers,” Trish added. “Richy” chalks-up an incredible milestone with Ducks SWIMMING FOR VETERAN
By GEOFF MANN
LAST Sunday, Bob Rich notched up his 1550th swim with the Dubbo Ducks. This is an incredible achievement, accounting for 29plus years of Sundays in the RSL Pool! “Now that is what you call a dedicated Duck! Richie is a Life Member and a great asset to the Ducks, and always has his finger on the pulse as to what is happening within the club,” fellow swimmer, Nicole Johnstone, said with admiration. “Richy” was joined poolside by fellow Life Member, Judy Walsh, who has 800 swim, Roger Mackay 700, David Sparkes 600 and Marg Ross 500. Nicole pointed out that Mia Uebergang is well on her way, already banking 50 Sundays. Not bad for a Duckling! In results on Sunday, the 50-me-
tre Freestyle final was a tight finish with Ron Everett breaking his time after answering the challenge from Norm Bahr. Jacob Pearce, Mia Uebergang, and Judy Walsh made up the minor placings. Norm then teamed-up with Mark Scullard to take a win in the final of the 2x25-metre Backstroke/ Breaststroke Brace relay final. Mia Uebergang and Neil Harris were only a touch away from Lucy Taylor and Mal Cavavagh, who came in third. Lousie Taylor broke her time in the 50-metre Backstroke/Breaststroke, to allow Mark Scullard to win, while Mia Ubergang finished a close second. Nicole Johnstone and Jack Allan made up the minors. The closest to time in the 25-metre Freestyle was won by Neil Harris with Josh Bird, Mark Scullard, John Wherrit, and Mia Uebergang, in the top five.

IT’S a club with a full trophy cabinet, with Macquarie United again overcoming heat and an extended playoff to claim the Over 35s six-a-side soccer tournament earlier this month. After scores were four-all after 40 mins and no score in extra time, there was a player a side drop-off, until both sides had only two on the field. Skipper Lobb then kicked the winning goal!
ARE you a keen swimmer? Then put this one on your calendar! Dubbo Ducks are inviting teams of four, or individuals who can join a team, to raise funds for Legacy. It is the Centenary of the Legacy Foundation, and the Dubbo Ducks Swimming Club has shown they can adapt to changing circumstances. For more than 30 years, they have been raising funds under the banner of esteemed club member Clive Rootes, in a hotly-contested relay, Duck spokesman, Peter Hargreaves said. “This year we are once again holding the time-honoured event, and we are hoping to attract a record field,” Peter explained. “It is open to any swimmers, young and more mature, to join in the fun and help this magnificent charity and its many valued volunteers continue to service families of those who have served, or are serving our country,” he added. Everyone is welcome to have a go, he added. “Some of our teams are already ‘in training’, others are ‘thinking about it’! “It is a good cause, our group is very welcoming; this year, the
four fastest teams will swim off for the Legacy Cup,” Peter added. Entry is only $20 per team. Each swimmer has to complete one lap (25m) of their preferred stroke. It is a wonderful addition to an event that has attracted hundreds of swimmers over the years. The Clive Rootes Legacy Relay will be held on Thursday, November 16, and teams are invited to register. In other Dubbo Ducks news, the swimmers formed a large flock at the RSL last Sunday, where the Ducklings of the flock out-foxed the more-mature birds. Euan Gardiner collected the highest point-score of the day adding 16 points to his tally, followed by Lani Uebergang who scored 15. The races this week were 50m Freestyle, 25m Freestlye brace, 25m Backstroke and 25m Breaststroke. The Ducks paused their races to stand for a minutes silence, in recognition of the many innocent individuals who have lost their lives, lost loved ones and been impacted by the conflict in Gaza and Israel. The Dubbo Ducks are busy practicing foxy manoeuvres ready to begin racing for Christmas hams later in the month.
