Profile GABBY JUDD Where do you work? Orana Dance Centre and Itty Bitty Spa & Beauty. Have you always lived in Dubbo? No, but we moved here 14 years ago with my husband’s job. What are your favourite memories of growing up in Dubbo or your hometown? I grew up in Orange and I just have really fond memories from my dance days and just how beautiful the town is within itself. I love the snow and the beautiful trees that line the streets in autumn. What do you like to do in your spare time? When I do get any free time I love spending it with my family and friends. We do a lot of camping together. Do you have any hidden talents or special skills? Not really. I am a member of the Dubbo Theatre Company, though, which I’m super-proud of and have choreographed a few of the recent shows for them. It’s such a rewarding experience. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Definitely a night owl. Do you have any pets? What are they and what are their names? Haha, I have many pets… we live on a farm. We would be here all day if I had to name them all! What are you watching at the moment? I’m watching Below Deck Down Under and Jersey Shore Family Vacation. Have you read any good books lately? Not lately. What music do you like to listen to? Mostly R ‘n’ B and hip hop are my fav. What does the next five years look like for you? Hopefully still doing what I’m doing now. I’d love to travel more maybe overseas. Winning the lotto would also be a bonus!

Zoey’s

dancers helping drive awareness of rare disease

PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/KEN SMITH

By DAVID DIXON

T

rainee doctors are often told: “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras” – meaning, first consider the more common, more likely diagnosis for any condition. But what if you’re suffering from an exceedingly rare disease that goes undiagnosed for nearly a decade? Local dance instructor Zoey Sweeney is one such person to find herself in that predicament. She was finally detected with neuroendocrine cancer. So her studio, Orana Dance Centre, is this week holding a fundraiser to highlight awareness of the disease. Zoey’s special ‘Zebra Week’ event involves her dancers and their families training in the zebra-striped black-andwhite designs that are the promotional colours and patterns of the Neuroendocrine Cancer Australia support group. “We do it every year, it’s a week of dress-up in black-and-white or zebra prints,” Zoey explained. “It starts on Monday and goes throughout the week, and

we have every student in the school involved,” she added. Young and healthy, Zoey’s long journey to her final heart-breaking discovery, like many with her condition, followed years of doctors looking for more-common health ailments. “I was finally diagnosed about two weeks after I bought the studio in 2019. Buying the studio became a great distraction from my diagnosis and a way to escape and forget about my medical issues,” she says philosophically. “Looking back, I probably had it at 18, when I was diagnosed with what the doctors thought was appendicitis, and then gastroenteritis, but it’s almost always misdiagnosed as ‘irritable bowel syndrome’, ‘menopause’, ‘diabetes’, or ‘anxiety’.” Treating the symptoms, she found that her condition simply didn’t improve, with suggestions that her continued health decline was lifestyle-related. “I was told I needed to look at what

I was eating, I tried gluten-free, lactose-free, I was down to almost eating rice only; but flushing would cover my entire body immediately after I ate. “I was told it may be anxiety; 60 per cent of sufferers are in the advanced stage before diagnosis, that’s the reason behind the zebra imagery, because doctors always think of ‘horses’ (common causes) first.” An exceedingly rare disease whose appearance and frequency has no apparent rhyme or reason, it was, in the end, a lucky ‘mistake’ by a health professional that finally helped pin-point the problem. “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I eat healthy; I love dance, ever since I was about five, it’s very random, there’s no history of any such type of condition in my family, ever,” Zoey emphasised. “I went for an ultrasound and the operator accidentally moved the probe too high, and said ‘Woah, what’s that mass in your liver?’ So, in the end, it was found purely by accident.”

Untreatable by traditional medical methods, Zoey’s prognosis has improved with injections that have stabilised her disease. “I was undergoing monthly injections of Lanreotide at the Western Cancer Centre. I’ve also travelled to Sydney for Lutate therapy in 2020 and 2021, and my condition is now stable; I feel pretty good, but the fatigue is the worst,” the busy mother of two primary school-aged girls, said. This, she adds, is why her fundraiser for Neuroendocrine Cancer Australia, is so vital. “They do so much good, they have counsellors, nurses, other support, they do some really important work,” Zoey said. “We’ve raised a few hundred in previous years, if we got to $500, that would be great!” To give to Zoey’s fundraiser, just donate using your phone with the QR code printed above.

Real superheroes don’t wear capes: they make them By SHARON BONTHUYS

R

eal superheroes don’t wear capes - they make them for a children’s charity that then gifts them to hospitals around the country to cheer up sick children. Keen sewer Jane Poole from Narromine is one of these dedicated “cape crusaders”, having made over 400 capes for the Australian charity Capes 4 Kids in the last two years. “I read about it on social media and thought I could do that,” said Mrs Poole, who moved to Narromine from Darwin with her husband Russell six years ago. The mum of three and grandma of seven gets great enjoyment from her cape-making and loves exploring local op shops for doona covers she can repurpose into new capes for the program. Her husband enjoys coming on these shopping trips and she also appreciates the support of a lady from Parkes who brings doona covers to Narromine. The cause has also become very personal for Mrs Poole, as one of her young grandsons received a cape during a hospital stay in Darwin. “He thinks I made his cape,” she said with a smile. Volunteer seamstresses like Mrs Poole make bright, fun superhero-style capes from an approved pattern following guidelines that ensure the items are safe for young children. The capes are sent to a distribution centre on the NSW central coast and from there are distributed to 156 hospitals across

Jane Poole models one of the capes she has made for Capes 4 Kids. PHOTOS:

the country, Mrs Poole said. Since its inception in Canberra in 2014, Capes 4 Kids has distributed more than 71,000 capes. “At the hospitals, the capes are distributed to sick children by the nurses as they see fit,” she said. Volunteers receive regular monthly updates on how many items have been distributed, which really shows the value of their work, Mrs Poole said. Volunteers source their own materials for the capes and welcome donated materials. Mrs Poole encourages anyone who is interested in sewing to consider joining Capes 4 Kids as a volunteer seamstress. “You don’t need to be an expert sewer to participate. Even beginners can do it. The pattern is very simple and already set up and the guidelines are clear,” she said. Knowing that sick children get great joy from the capes encourages Mrs Poole to continue to give her time to the cause. “It puts a smile on my face to know that a little person going through a tough time gets a cape I’ve made which has then put a smile on their face.” The Capes 4 Kids website has further information about how readers can support the program with donations, donated items, or how to become a volunteer seamstress. The callout for volunteers does bear a warning though: “cape making can become addictive!” With 400 capes under her belt and counting, Mrs Poole would certainly agree.

“CAR OF THE FUTURE”! ith most Dubbo families now typically running two cars, why not look at an electric vehicle (EV) for your second runaround? With more models coming on the market, prices dropping, and battery storage life improving, now’s the time to get in on the EV revolution, Sainsbury Automotive Dubbo Principal Dealer, Laurie Rockell believes. “As the battery storage life improves, we’re getting better and longer distances, making them more accepted in regional areas,” Laurie said. “With most homes featuring mum and dad both having their own car, they are ideal as runarounds for shopping, dropping the kids at school, sport, social events, and they are very competitive for price now,” he added. Dealer for some of Dubbo’s most popular brands, Laurie offers a number of new EV models that are ideal for your first taste of this new motoring market. “The main brands that we sell that are electric vehicles are the Kia, the MG, and a Hyundai hybrid that is also popular,” Laurie said. “We also have a limited supply of the Jeep and an LDV electric cars as well.” Laurie now retails two models that could become the everyman EV of the 21st century; in essence, the Model T-Ford of the post-fossil fuel motoring age. “There’s a new car, the MG 4, that has hit the market at the right time - it’s very competitively-priced and is designed to fill the space in the market for EV’s, which are all generally getting more affordable. “There’s also the Kia EV6 - we’ve got them in stock, and they’re starting to sell well. There’s also the Hyundai hybrids,” Laurie said. While many of us still love our old-style internal combustion engines, Laurie acknowledges that EV’s are here to stay and, with the benefits they provide in reducing emissions and pollution, they are the transport trend of the future. “They’re getting more affordable and they’re not going away,” he said. “While they may be only about five per cent of our market at the moment, in 10 years’ time they could well be 50 per cent - they are the future,” Laurie concluded.

The electric vehicle for everyone the MG4, the no-compromise compromise car

ORANA MALL

Retailer Week OF THE

Faisal and Tazrin’s talent for fine pastry on show at Creme Patissiere “OUR names are Faisal and Tazrin Eusufzai, and our shop is named Creme Patissiere. We currently operate one shop located at Kiosk 1 in Delroy Park Shopping Centre, and we have recently opened a second shop at Orana Mall. “Creme Patissiere primarily specialises in cakes and pastries. Originally, we intended to offer various cakes and French pastries at our first location. However, due to space limitations, we were unable to provide French pastries there. Nevertheless, we are excited about our new shop at Orana Mall, which will allow us to expand our offerings to include a diverse range of French and other European pastries.

“Before embarking on this culinary journey, our professional backgrounds were quite different. I, Faisal, worked in the mortgage industry, while Tazrin was employed by Pearson Education. The idea of transitioning to a career in commercial baking was inspired by suggestions from Tazrin’s colleagues and friends who were impressed by our cake and pastry creations. “Following our move from Melbourne to Dubbo, Tazrin started working in a famous Dubbo bakehouse and we started a home-based hobby business, which received tremendous support and positive feedback from the local Dubbo community. This

overwhelming local support ultimately led us to make a career change and turn our passion for baking into a profession. “In December 2021, we proudly opened our first physical shop at Delroy Park Shopping Centre, where we were met with a fantastic response from our customers. This success served as the catalyst for us to expand our business by opening our second shop at Orana Mall. With this expansion, we look forward to offering our customers an even broader selection of cakes and pastries in a more spacious environment. “As our business continues to thrive, we are actively seek-

ing additional staff to help us meet the growing demand,” Faisal explained. “We initially began hiring from the outset, but now we find ourselves in need of more staff, particularly during peak times. Despite the long hours we put

into our work, we welcome anyone seeking employment opportunities to visit our shops and discuss potential positions with us. We are eager to provide more support as our business flourishes and our customer base expands.”

Dubbo Art Fair 23 showcases local artists By KEN SMITH

Over 40 local artists took over the gallery space in the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) for the annual Dubbo Art Fair, with free admission to the community on October 28-29. “Now in its third year the Dubbo Art Fair is the biggest art fair this side of the Blue Mountains and showcases local established and emerging artists,” Dubbo Regional Council

Exhibition and Curator Officer Kent Buchanan said. Dubbo Art Fair 23 featured a great variety of art including painting, drawing, ceramics, glass, photography and much more. The event was very well attended over the three days (including the Friday evening official opening), attracting many locals and visitors, with many happy artists enjoying good sales.

FOCUS ON FLETCHERS

AGRIBUSINESS GRADUATE GROWS WITH THE GRAIN

Fletcher International Export Grain Terminal accumulation manager, Cooper Vinci. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS

By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD, Cooper Vinci found a career in Dubbo, which has already exposed him to the workings of a multinational conglomerate and on his own merit, recently discovered he’s one of five people selected for a coveted agribusiness mentorship program. Like most workers starting at Fletcher International Exports, however, Cooper’s first role was labourer in the abattoir before moving across to Fletchers Grain Terminal to be a logistics coordinator organising exports and train operations, then moving into grain accumulation to be responsible for buying various grains from producers throughout the central west. “I talk a lot to growers, and domestic end users like feedlots plus keep an eye on prices of commodities so I’m trying to get the best price for the grower on the

day,” he explained to Dubbo Photo News. Brought up in Castle Hill, Sydney, Cooper is a far cry from the city, but it was his Sydney school, which set him on the path to experiencing the agribusiness world. “We started off showing cattle at the Easter Show and local shows, things like that, then in Year 11 we had to do primary industry work experience, so I decided to do the harvest out between Coonamble and Walgett for a week. “Ever since that work experience, I’ve wanted to be in the industry, I just didn’t know what at that stage, so it was an eye opener seeing the country and finding out what’s out there and a big change from Sydney, but I haven’t looked back since and I’m really enjoying it.” After school, Cooper headed to the University of New England in Armidale to complete a major in rural science, and it

was a chance meeting at a uni careers day with Maddy Herbert, HR Manager, Fletcher International Exports, which steered him toward applying for the Dubbo company’s graduate program. “It was about a year later, when Covid kicked us out of uni, so I had to finish my studies online and started working at Fletchers while I did that, then got into the six-month graduate program. “When I first started here, I was amazed how vertically integrated Fletchers is and it’s something that had probably drawn me to the company as well, plus I can experience it from the farm gate all the way to the exports, and withit all-in house, there’s promising jobs throughout the supply chain with Fletchers, on both the meat side and the grain side. “Fletchers is family orientated, family run, so it’s a pretty good, tight communi-

ty in the office and on site, their morals and their values are aligned with family values, so there’s a good network and support,” he said. At weekends Cooper plays with the Roos and has settled into Dubbo life, while preparing to participate in his newly awarded mentor program. Granted by Grain Trade Australia (GTA), the mentorship program is called Five Under 30, and the 12-month experience will give him access to senior industry leadership, training programs and networking opportunities. “The GTA started the mentor program this year to try and engage further with the younger generation within the grains industry and they offer you a program to be mentored by someone more senior in the industry. I just found out last week, and I’m really pleased,” Cooper said.

ON October 21, hundreds of festival-goers flocked to Dundullimal Homestead to experience Dubbo’s fourth instalment of the Under Western Skies music festival. Over the course of eight hours, people were treated to an electrifying musical lineup, featuring a delightful mix of artists ranging from the energising indie-folk of Little Quirks, the blues and soul of The Safety of Life at Sea, and the Americana country of Big Sky Mountain, all under the idyllic, eponymous western skies. Organiser and President of SOMAD (Songwriters & Original Musicians Association Dubbo Inc.) Fred Randell reflected on his experience with Under Western Skies: “We were very pleased to have put on another amazing music festival. The feedback we have received has

been overwhelmingly positive. We had an outstanding lineup of acts on the main stage and the beautiful grounds of Dundullimal were once again the perfect location. “We’ve taken the approach of slow growth, it’s never the intention it would be another Splendour in the Grass. It is at its heart a boutique festival, with at least 50 per cent of the bill made up of local and regional talent. “We’ll continue to bring amazing international acts to headline and generally improve upon all facets of the festival as time goes by, but we feel we have a winning formula of size and scale that we can attain.” SOMAD is now turning its attention towards the third annual Dubbo Original Music Awards held on November 15. Several of this year’s nominees played at Under Western Skies.

WALL COVERINGS

I

essential materials for transformative home decor

n the quest to infuse personal taste and aesthetic preferences into our living spaces, wall coverings stand out as transformative elements that can dictate the ambience of any room. Whether you’re endeavouring to cultivate a warm and inviting atmosphere, aiming for a sleek contemporary feel, or setting the scene for a rustic retreat, the plethora of material options available can cater to every conceivable design sensibility.

For those considering a revamp of their wall spaces, the following array of popular coverings could be just what your home needs to elevate its beauty and charm.

WOOD: A Timeless Choice There’s an undeniable allure to wood that makes it a perennial favourite. It exudes warmth and introduces a tactile sense

of nature into the home. The choices are abundant: from the rich textures of natural wood to the environmentally conscious selection of reclaimed barn wood, or the smooth finish of laminated wood panels, each brings its own distinct vibe and grain pattern, offering a serene, organic backdrop to your interior scheme.

BRICK: Versatile and Rich with Character For a dash of nostalgia or an industrial edge, brick wall coverings are immensely versatile. Full-wall installations can transform a space to emulate a warehouse loft, while selective accents can add character to a more subdued setting. Whether you choose genuine brick for its authentic texture or opt for a faux brick alternative for a similar aesthetic without the weight and complexity, brick remains a robust choice

for those looking to inject a touch of timeless charm.

their ease of installation is a bonus for DIY enthusiasts.

STONE: The Epitome of Elegance

METAL TILES: Contemporary Sheen

Stone wall coverings convey an air of opulence and timeless elegance. Luxurious options like marble and granite not only dazzle with their unique veining but also offer impressive durability. Meanwhile, schist and other textured stones lend a rugged beauty that can turn a plain wall into a statement feature.

When it comes to adding a modern twist, metal tiles or panels are unmatched. They reflect light and add a dynamic layer of texture, whether used to sheath an entire wall or placed as chic, shimmering accents.

VINYL: Practical and Stylish For versatility and practicality, vinyl coverings stand out. They come in a vast array of patterns and hues, with many designs convincingly mimicking other materials like wood or stone. Their moisture resistance makes them particularly suited to areas like kitchens and bathrooms, and

Transforming your home with wall coverings not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but can also significantly impact its perceived value and comfort. As every material holds its own unique qualities, consider consulting with experts at your local home renovation centre. They can provide invaluable advice to help you navigate the wealth of options and select the perfect coverings that reflect your individual style and meet your home’s specific needs.

1A South Dubbo Public 1A is full of enthusiastic and hardworking students with an infectious love for learning. They arrive at school each day with a smile on their face and a positive attitude - ready for their learning ahead!

Recently 1A ventured into the past to look at the life of their grandparents and even went on an excursion to the 1950’s classroom at the Western Plains Cultural Centre. They loved learning about what school was like, playing old style games and comparing technology to their lives now. This week, they have been learning about native Australian animals and their Wiradjuri names in their cultural lessons. They loved learning the interesting facts that wombat poo is ice cube shaped, up to 12 chicken eggs fit into an emu egg and they are an aqua colour. 1A look forward to another term of learning before they head into Year 2!

ARIES: Even if you haven’t planned anything, it’s not too late to organise a romantic getaway. If you’re currently taking a training course, don’t lose concentration until it’s over. At work, analyse every detail, even if it’s difficult and time-consuming. TAURUS: Your emotions may get the better of you this week. In this situation, it’s important to learn to let go and deepen your spiritual knowledge. If you’re in a relationship, it’s essential to make the time to have fun together now and again. GEMINI: Don’t let impatience get the better of you. Break up the monotony in your relationship by going on new and exciting adventures with your loved one. In your professional life, you’ll have the courage to make big decisions. CANCER: You’ll be handling emergencies this week. This will benefit you at work. In love, it’s the little touches that express the intensity of the feelings you and your partner have for each other. LEO: When tensions arise in your relationship, you tend to want to resolve the situation too quickly. At the office or elsewhere, you’ll be able to impose respect in chaotic situations, which will give you a measure of pride. VIRGO: You’ll have to be patient with a family member this week. You may already be getting out the Christmas decorations and sprucing up your home. On the other hand, the idea of moving could arise spontaneously. LIBRA: You’ll have to make several trips for work or personal reasons. Express your feelings to resolve a conflict that’s dragging on. Avoid being overly critical of your significant other for a simple little mistake. SCORPIO: If you’re in a difficult financial situation, you’ll know what to do to get out of it successfully. Don’t be shy. Show off your skills to win over the support of your employer. SAGITTARIUS: Your mind may be flooded with ideas this week. You’ll start many projects without completing them and suggest many activities to your friends. At work, a certain task will take longer than expected to complete. CAPRICORN: Excessive stress could bring down your energy. It’s essential to get some rest and make changes to your daily routine. You could turn to spiritual practices to relax. AQUARIUS: Your social life will be particularly active this week. Even if you’re craving solitude, someone will bring you out of your shell and put a smile on your face. Rather than pushing back, let yourself be guided by the change. PISCES: At work, you’ll be responsible for organising an event that brings many people together, such as an important meeting. When you combine business with pleasure, you’ll have more fun at work. You’ll be more productive in a relaxed environment.

Dubbo Photo News November 9-15, 2023

Halloween 23

By KEN SMITH Halloween 23 went off locally with the official Halloween Houses Dubbo list listing over 60 locations ready for Trick or Treat. Dubbo Photo News caught up with some of the fantastic costumes and how scary good were some of the displays. Two of our favourites were Susan Place and Wingewarra. These two had so much going on, plenty of scares, fun and eagerly sought-after lolly packs. Well done to all the local homes that took park and to all the parents who created the costumes and scary makeup.

A NEAR-RECORD crowd frocked up for the races on Saturday, with the first of two day gala meetings attracting spectators from all over Australia for the event traditionally known as “Derby Day” – the west’s biggest party! Dubbo Turf Club Manager, Sam Fitzgerald, his staff, and members of the Board worked tirelessly to showcase the ever-developing facilities trackside. “We had two major marquees and Jake Pracey Holmes steered Barry The Poet to the line Country Boosted Maiden Plate. 20 smaller tents filled with corporate clients and those who just love to be a part of the atmosphere,” Sam said. The seven races had race lovers shouting along the magnificent white picket fence as four local trainers booted home winners. Michael Lunn, Natalie Pearce, Brett Robb, and Dar Lunn kept the home fires burning, while Andrew Ryan from Bathurst (two) and Brett Thompson (Gulgong), completed the card. Tuesday’s Big Dance/Melbourne Cup, saw another record crowd file in early to celebrate the races that stop the nation.

By GEOFF MANN FOLLOWING the untimely passing of Rick Bohm, Dubbo’s sports community has lost a popular and active supporter and competitor. Tributes continue to flow for the man who donated generously his time, expertise, and commitment, to many community activities, but particularly golf and bowls. Originally from Narromine

where he went to school, Rick was a single-handicap golfer at Dubbo Golf Club, where he was also Club Captain for a number of years. However, according to the Club Dubbo Facebook page, it was in the sport of lawn bowls, where Rick was a real influence. “In the 1990s at West Dubbo, he won the club Pairs and Fours Championships, and was always knocking on the door of the very strong No 1 Pennant Grade

team,” the tribute read. “He was the Bowls’ Secretary for many years and it was in the administrative area of the sport that he shone,” it went on. Rick moved back to Narromine in the early 2000s, where he soon established himself in many significant roles at the Narromine Bowling Club. “At the Zone Four level, and over a period of 20 years, Rick held the positions of Secretary and Treasurer, and was on the

Zone’s Match Committee. “It was in these capacities that his knowledge of the game and his dedication to the sport earned him Life Membership of Zone 4,” the accolades continued. Rick will be farewelled today, Thursday, November 9 at the Uniting Church Narromine. “He will be sorely missed by his family, as well as his many friends and bowlers, both across the local area and state,” a final tribute said.

IN a new T20 cricket competition for the region; the Dubbo-based “Western Plains Outlaws” won the shoot-out against the “Central West Wranglers” in Bathurst on Sunday. The Tremain-Copeland Cup has been introduced to salute former Test bowler, Trent Copeland of Bathurst, and current NSW Paceman, Chris Tremain of Yeoval, and was decided over two matches at Morse Oval. Country Player of the Year, Matt Everett, combined with in-form batsman Ed Murray to lead the Western Outlaws to a match-winning 7/151 ( Everett 71, Murray 34) in Game One of the series. One of the newest Outlaws, then shot down four Wranglers for just 13 runs, to ensure the win. In Game Two, Ed Murray top-scored with 75, and received good support from Zac Bayliss, who remained 45 not-out, for another relatively easy victory. Wrangler’s Tanvir Singh, with scores of 62 and 49 not-out, had selectors pencilling him in for a well-deserved Country Championship spot. In Whitney Cup cricket, CYMS and RSL Colts scored outright wins, while Rugby picked up their first win of the season.

Overnight rain freshens greens as players take time to warm-up Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ OVERNIGHT showers freshened the greens as a total of 47 bowlers rolled-up at North Dubbo Sporties on Sunday. Vicki Hummel showed she is one of the better swinger players of the Combo bowlers, mixing it with Chris Strojny and Matt Quill, as well as Greg Brown and Alex Rae. While Chris and Matt added four shots in the first eight, Vicki, Greg, and Alex racked-up eight. They had seven more by the end, for a 15-8 win and third place. Sometimes it takes a little while to “warm” to the conditions, as Sue O’Dea, John McKenzie, and Anthony Coe found when Mary Perry, Rob Pfeiffer, and Bri-

an Jones, took the first half with a lead of three. However, Sue, John, and Anthony, found form, a couple of four counts bumping them to a three-shot lead on end 11 and a 15-13 win in a game that could have gone either way. Imagine being 18-1, after eight! Terry Stapleford, Pete Bennison, and Gordon Scott, were pumping Doc Livingston, Gaye Cottee, and John Cole in their match-up. But, as happens in bowls, the wheels fell off the in the second half as Doc, Gaye, and John, returned serve. Terry, Pete, and Gordon found themselves on the receiving end as their opponents slotted 15. In the end, only three short! Sue McCauley, Steve Kelly, and Phil Knight, were scoring singles against Sue Armstrong, Mel Gid-

dings, and Graham Ross’s multi-shots. Those added up, as they turned the corner and the scores to win narrowly, 14-11. In another of the close games, Shirley Marchant, Frank Armstrong, and Al Andriske were floundering on four shots, while Di Hildebrant, Julie Brown, and Pete Sinclair had 11 on the card after the first eight. Shirley, Frank, and Al took six of the six of the second ends but, somehow, Di, Julie, and Pete were able to hang on, 13-11 when all looked lost. Glennis Hanagan, Ian Humphries, and Col Cottee blew Ron McCauley, Tod O’Dea, and Bryan O’Sullivan away in a powerful first eight. Their 15 shot second eight was transformative! Ron,

Tod, and Bryan had just three singles against the rampant trio, who won the award for “Best on Green” with their 25-7 victory. Some excellent bowling by the lead, Paul Wooldridge and the second, Eric Satchell made it easy for the skip, Col Dover, to apply his talents in what was an eight-end demolition. It took seven ends for John Kennedy, Allan Stratford, and Pete Ruzans, to even get on the board and, with a single on the next end, they were still looking at a woeful morning of bowls, 13 shots in the red. They finally got it right after the break. One of the great “comebacks” started to emerge. Adding nine shots on ends nine, 10, and 11, brought them within four before Paul, Eric, and Col, did just

enough to stay in the lead, winning the game 22 to 14 and second place for the morning. Often when a team seems to be struggling through the first eight ends, they find something extra. Paul Martin, Gary Huggins, and Paul Goodstat, knew their threeshot lead might not be enough after seven, especially when Leo Balstad, Ruby Stockings, and Karen Greenhalge, recovered to take a four-shot advantage into the break. Was it “luck”, fortune, or something else? A five-count on 13 was the trigger that kept Leo, Ruby, and Karen in the lead, Paul, Gary, and Paul fought-back and nearly took the crumbs but Leo, Ruby, and Karen hung-on for a 14-11 win.

Friends across the world ORISCON Netball tourney

PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED

By GEOFF MANN THE Nita McGrath Courts were filled with colourful costumes and players of all ages on the weekend as the Orana Residents of Indian Sub-Continental heritage (ORISCON) joined with locals for some friendly competition. ORISCON Chair, Gargi Ganguly, says the group was thrilled to share the incredible outcomes of ORISCON’s netball tournament for migrant women and girls. “We not only celebrated

the power of sport, but also embraced health benefits and reconciliation,” Gargi said. “Thanks to a fantastic partnership with our local Indigenous netball club, we highlighted the importance of unity and understanding between cultures,” he added. Breaking stereotypes was also a key focus of the day with honouring of esteemed Indigenous Elders awarding medals and prizes to talented participants. Gargi said the cross-sec-

tion of ages allowed migrant women to play freely, unburdened by parenting responsibilities. “And to make it even more special, we ensured that families had a role too, with joint children’s activities facilitated by Creative Community Concepts, a not-for-profit organisation promoting sports in our community. “Together we are creating a stronger, healthier, more inclusive community through the power of sport,” Gargi told Photo News.

Castlereagh All Blacks go back-to-back

By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL

LEGENDARY Castlereagh All Blacks, recently won back-to-back titles at National Indigenous Touch Football tournament, held in the golden west. The team retained their Opens’ Cup title, edging-out the Newcastle Yowies in an epic final. Touch Football Australia (TFA) – in partnership with the Regional Enterprise Development Institute (REDIE) – hosted the 2023 edition of the National Indigenous Touch Football Knockout in Dubbo last weekend with 19 teams across three Divisions. Australian Touch personality, Dylan Thompson, showed his class throughout the tournament and was named “Player of the

al. Match” in the Grand Final. The Under 16s Final was as also a thrilling contest, with the Pambilang Coasttals emerging victorious in n a “drop-off” against New-castle Yowies. Pambilang g also took out the Under 12s division, besting Dar-keye in a best of three series. The tournament plays a crucial role in TFA’s Reconciliation Action Plan, which aims to create a sense of community, inclusive participation, enjoyment and reconciliation. LEFT: Dubbo was privileged to have one of the legends of Touch in town last weekend. It was no surprise Dylan Thompson was named MVP in Castlereagh’s second successive National Indigenous Touch title. Thompson was a superstar for NSW in their Mixed teams State of Origin win over Qld earlier this year.

NRLW’s Taneka Todhunter showed all her class on the weekend. The NSW and Australian Indigenous player demonstrated her ability to dart through gaps and her serene passing skills. Taneka loves to get home where it all began.

Wello Wolf Pack pups snap-up Western Schools Touch Championships — again! By GEOFF MANN ST Mary’s Wellington has continued to produce the goods on the Touch Football fields of the golden west; with the Primary team winning the Western Schools’ Cup 2023 Mixed Competition, for the umpteenth time. Proud as punch coach and teacher, Alistaire Thompson, told Photo News, many of the young players, showed maturity beyond their years. “Our young team was composed of five Year Six, two Year Five, three Year Four and three Year Three students; the age difference against other larger schools, didn’t worry them in the least,” Mr Thompso said proudly. “With our Year Six students leading the young ‘Wolf Pack’ pups, they played like they had been together for years,” he added. On their way to the trophy, Wello defeated Molong, Mendooran, and St Mary’s, Dubbo, in their round games, and then clinched it with an 8-0 win over Molong Central in the Grand Final. “The team scored 35 tries on the day, and only conceded two! “’Players Player’, was shared between the team captains, Olivia Carney and Markus Ivey,” the proud coach said. Mr Thompson thanked all parents who helped transport the Wolf Pack for their enthusiastic support all day. “Also, a big thank you to our referees Maddy Higgins, Bella Sheridan and Bryde Chandler who did an amazing job and to our biggest supporter, Jo Ivey for her photos and amazing ongoing support!” he concluded. Next up, State Finals and who knows? More NSW reps from Wellington, perhaps!
