Singing and yoga to help our homeless

n international performing star – whose work often touches on the frailty of human emotions – is the guest at not one, but two special events to support a local group helping those in greatest need in our community. But you’ll have to get in quick, bookings are closing soon to see the great Toni Childs in concert this Saturday, November 18, with a special wellness event this Sunday, November 19. This major annual concert fundraiser for Orana Support Services, who provide emergency housing in the region, is followed by a special “Yoga Experience” with the versatile performer, who also works in the field of mindfulness and “deepening our relationship with ourselves”. Toni was most-famous for her bluesy renditions of such songs as “Stop Your Fussin’”, “Don’t Walk Away” and “Many Rivers to Cross” in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Her sad, soulful ballad, “I’ve Got To Go Now” – about a mother removing her family from domestic abuse – is typical of her very personal and individual approach to her craft. Since moving from Hawaii to Byron Bay a decade ago, she has also developed a strong following with her many retreats including, “Because You’re Beautiful” Yoga Workshops featuring Zen Yoga and Pilates. Orana Support Services is a not-forprofit specialist homelessness service provider that manages a women’s refuge for women and children and men’s refuge (Sturt House) for adult males in Dubbo. They also offer tenancy support services in the Dubbo region, and outreach in other areas, for those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, rough sleeping and experiencing or at risk of experiencing domestic and family violence. Their new youth programs include the
Accompanied Children’s Support Service for young people who have experienced or are experiencing domestic and family violence and are accompanied by a parent or carer. Their opportunity shops in Dubbo and Wellington also provide affordable clothing and other items for locals and visitors with clients are offered free access to Op Shop opportunities. The visit by the multi-talented Ms Childs is their major fundraiser for the year, featuring a Concert Dinner this Saturday, November 18 at Dubbo Regional Council Convention Centre. Guests will enjoy a three-course meal followed by Toni’s performance. The cost of this event is $165 per person with tickets available through the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre online Box Office at: drtcc.sales.ticketsearch. com/sales/salesevent/113170 The Sunday, November 19 event in-
volves Toni leading a “Yoga Experience” described as: “a rich and expansive journey that will deeply change the way you connect to you, incorporating dance and celebration”. The Yoga Experience runs from 10am to 1.30pm with a cost of $66, with tickets available from 123tix at: www.123tix.com.au/events/39840/ experience-yoga-with-toni-childs The concert-dinner is likely to attract more than 400 local and regional guests, while the Yoga Experience is limited to 100 participants. The Service is also looking for donations for the silent auction, raffles and lucky door prizes which will be held at the Convention Centre on the Saturday evening, prior to and during dinner. For more information, or to donate goods for the auctions or as prizes, contact Maria Sutton at Orana Support Services’ Dubbo Office, on m: 0438 883 265, email: maria@oranasupport.com.au
Old Dubbo Gaol, Zoo, council, share gongs at 2023 NSW Tourism Awards IT was three silvers and a bronze in a great result for local tourism providers at the 2023 NSW Tourism Awards held last week in Sydney. The Old Dubbo Gaol took home silver for the Cultural Tourism category, while also snatching bronze in the Tourism Attraction category on the night. Taronga Western Plains Zoo took home silver in the Major Tourist Attraction category. And Dubbo Regional Council also bagged a silver in the NSW Government Tourism category. But it was the efforts of one of our founding tourist attractions that caught the eye of Mayor Councillor Mathew Dickerson. “Congratulations to the whole team at Old Dubbo Gaol for winning silver at the NSW Tourism Awards,” he enthused. “This is a wonderful achievement and a testament to the continued improvements being made to the visitor experience and preservation of this culturally significant site,” he added. This was also the first time that Dubbo Regional Council had been a finalist in the NSW Government Tourism
category, he revealed, believing that their second in this category for the state was a great achievement. Opened for visitors in 1974 and one of the region’s bestknown tourist attractions, Old Dubbo Gaol has also introduced a number of new developments over the past 12 months. These include the first temporary exhibition of ‘The Life of Crime', as well as a complementary publication on the exhibition, created by Visitor Experience Officer Chris Anemaat. Additionally, an interactive map design and touchscreen have been installed in the Gallows Gallery. These have all contributed to the achievements of the tourist attraction over the past 12 months. The Old Dubbo Gaol has been undergoing continued site restoration work across the site including utility infrastructure upgrades, heritage roofing work, and continuing restoration of brickwork. “The Old Dubbo Gaol team are incredibly dedicated to continuing to improve and
restore the site whilst providing an exceptional visitor experience,” Cr Dickerson said. “Congratulations also to Taronga Western Plains Zoo, who has taken out silver in the Major Tourist Attraction
category; it just shows the depth of quality tourism experiences in Dubbo, and why our region is such a popular destination for visitors,” he concluded.
Four NSW Tourism Awards were scored between Old Dubbo Gaol, Taronga Western Plains Zoo, and Dubbo Regional Council, at the 2023 NSW Tourism Awards held last week in Sydney. PHOTO: SUPPLIED.

MIA AND MOLLY FUNDRAISING FOR SARCOMA RESEARCH

S
arcoma is one of the most prominent causes of cancer-related deaths in the 0–24-year-old age group. More than a quarter of children diagnosed with sarcoma do not survive beyond five years. Our local 16-year-old Molly Croft and elite netballer Amy Parmenter created The Tie Dye Project to raise awareness and much needed funds for sarcoma research after Molly was diagnosed at 12. The Tie Dye Project has successfully raised over $800,000 for this worthy cause. Now The Tie Dye Project is spreading its reach with a Tie Dye Festival on Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, Novem-
ber 19, at Heffron Park Netball Courts at 60 Fitzgerald Ave, Maroubra. Saturday will be a day to assist in creating this year’s products. This will include all kinds of important tie-dye tasks. Sunday will be a day full of fun, food and friends. There will be music, treats, activities, netball clinics with elite players, a raffle, DIY tie-dying, and the opportunity to have the first pick of this year’s Tie Dye merchandise. Sunday, November 19, will also be the day Mia’s Shave for Sarcoma will happen at the Tie Dye Festival. Mia is a 13-year-old who has decided to fundraise for sarcoma research by shaving
her head. Her hair will be donated to Wigs for Kids. Mia shaved her head when Molly was first diagnosed, and now is coached by Molly in her basketball representative side. Molly’s pride in Mia is evident as she shares Mia is “making this selfless choice for all those affected by this deadly cancer, which claims more young lives than any other. It receives too little funding, and countless young individuals in our region are battling it. Mia is doing it for them.” Mia has a target of $8500 to raise, and

Mia’s Shave for Sarcoma can be found at https://mias-shave-for-sarcoma.raisely.com/ The not-for-profit Tie Dye Project also relies on donations so money raised can be used towards funding for sarcoma projects. Local Heroes smiling faces of Golden West's Christmas campaign
B
right smiles of this year’s ‘Local Heroes’ will be be seen on the 2023 Christmas flags hanging in both Dubbo and Wellington CBDs as part of the upcoming ‘Christmas in the Dubbo Region’ campaign. The CBD flags play an important part in the annual festivities, with faces of our ‘Local Heroes’ making the colourful additions more meaningful and eye-catching. They also allow residents to celebrate the stories and amazing contributions and hard work these residents make to our community. The ‘Local Heroes’ were nominated by the community throughout August and, as seen in previous years, the nominees are a brilliant showcase of the diversity and hard work our community members contribute throughout the year. Featured this year are faces you may see every week at parkrun and the Men’s Shed, to those making the magic happen behind the scenes for our local community groups and sporting clubs. Dubbo Mayor Councillor Mayor Mathew Dickerson said that it was important to acknowledge the individuals and organisations that have made
a noteworthy contribution to the community in the areas of arts, education, health, volunteering, community connection, sport and more. “Thank you to this year’s ‘Local Heroes’ for all your contributions to our community. I look forward to seeing the flags around Dubbo and Wellington, and encourage everyone to shop local this Christmas,” Cr Dickerson said. One 2023 ‘Local Hero’ Farhana Khader is chuffed that her flag is being flown in Dubbo’s CBD. “I am very grateful. I did not expect at all to be nominated and I was very surprised and happy, and very grateful for my community and the Dubbo community who always welcomed us,” Farhana said. “For me, Dubbo is home, it’s beautiful, I feel like this is my home, I belong here.” The ‘Christmas in the Dubbo Region’ campaign will begin in the coming weeks, with a strong focus on exploring and supporting local businesses this Christmas. There will be plenty for all to enjoy, and residents are encouraged to keep an eye on council’s website and social media channels to stay up-to-date with the latest news and information.

S
pecial fundraiser is being held this weekend for a loveable local larrikin in need of a helping hand. “Doin’ it for Dicko” is on at The Garden Hotel (Gipps and Talbrager Streets) this Saturday, November 18, with an Auction Night to help raise funds for Craig Dickson, now a paraplegic after a freak accident. Dicko’s a footy fan, former Army man, father, and grandfather, who volunteered for years with the local Volunteer Rescue Service, until one of those random accidents that can change our lives, close mate, Greg Pengilly explained. “It was on March 8, this year, he was replacing solar lights on the back patio, on the roof, and one of the panels simply collapsed and he fell through – it was just one of those things,” Greg said. “Now we want to raise some funds for those special needs he will require from now on,” Greg added. Dicko, quite an outdoorsy bloke who loves fishing, camping and spending time with his family, requires help with house adjustments, such as ramps, to ensure he can remain as active as possible. This Saturday’s fundraiser is listed as a family-friendly event, with face-painting and other kids’ activities and an auction of literally
hundreds of items with a range of values, so that everyone can get involved. “We’re sort of expecting 300-400 people to turn-up, we’ve got well over 160 items to auction, some of which we’ve bundled together for about 57 individual auctions,” he explained. “Our auctioneer is Brentley Goodwin, part-owner of Raine and Horne, so many local businesses have really pitched-in to help,” he added. Other auctioneers helping-out include Justin Sanderson and Simon Scoles, with music from renowned local muso, Paul McMillian. Craig’s recovery has included 11 weeks at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, and rehabilitation at Royal Ryde Rehab adjusting to his new life. Attendees can either book a table, or simply show-up on the day. “We kick-off from around 4pm onwards, with the auction starting at around 7pm,” Greg said. “We’ll also have live music, raffles, merchandise, and the playground for the kids, it should be a great night.” For more information, go to the Facebook group “Doin’ It for Dicko”, or send an email to: doinitfordicko@gmail.com

DUBBO STAMPEDE PRESENTS CHEQUE TO TRADIES IN SIGHT
Katie Lyons, Bruno Efoti and Maureen Darlington. PHOTO: KEN SMITH/ DUBBO PHOTO NEWS
BY KEN SMITH EACH year, Dubbo Stampede selects a local community organisation to support. The support over the years has ranged from local domestic violence housing, Tracker Riley, Dubbo Touch Football Lighting, and Red Cross among other not for profits. Katie Lyons on behalf of Dubbo Stampede told Dubbo Photo News: “In 2023 Dubbo Stampede chose to support a fantastic local organisation ‘Tradies in Sight'.Tradies in Sight are a local mental health organisation dedi-
cated to supporting tradies in regional NSW. “This industry has a disproportionate number of mental health and suicide incidents with a lack of dedicated assistance. Bruno Efoti is the founder of ‘Tradies in Sight’ and has dedicated his life to improving mental health in the trade industries. The Dubbo Stampede could not think of a more worthy recipient of our $10,000 donation.” On being chosen to receive the Dubbo Stampede donation, Tradies in Sight Director Bruno told Dubbo Photo News:
“Thank you to everyone at the Dubbo Stampede for your generous donation. We are humbled by your efforts and support. “The money will help Tradies in Sight to continue the TAFE Program that we have been delivering at the two Dubbo TAFE campuses to proactively improve the mental health and wellbeing of our young tradies and apprentices. “We have around two thousand tradie apprentices who go through the Dubbo system each year and this increases our capacity to deliver our program to more students not only in Dubbo but Orange, Mudgee and Parkes."

Dubbo students’ Japanese odyssey a triumphant trip
T
en students from Dubbo recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan as a part of the Dubbo Regional Council’s (DRC) Sister City Exchange Program. The program, at its heart, embraces the differences between the sister cities, and provides a life-changing opportunity to live in the shoes of a local, deeply exploring the culture on a personal level unlike tourism. It allows students to gain an open-minded perspective of the world and enjoy a new and exciting way of life. The students spent nine days in Minokamo, Dubbo’s Sister City, a three-and-ahalf hour train ride southwest

from Tokyo. They attended a number of activities, including time in three different high schools, exploring cultural icons Inuyama Castle and Shogen-Ji Temple, as well as River Port Park, an Australian-themed outdoors park. They also spent time in Tokyo, complete with extensive tours of the beautiful city and an enjoyable day at Tokyo Disneyland. The students were accompanied by chaperones Kim Rice-Harland and Stuart Harland, who said the highlight was the time spent in Minokamo. “The Minokamo Community really opened up their homes and hearts to ac-

commodate us. Visiting the schools and being able to participate in the class with the Japanese students was so rewarding. Playing softball, conducting science experiments and learning social studies in Japanese was so much fun. The changing of footwear from outdoor shoes to inside shoes, to toilet shoes to sport shoes throughout the day was a very unique aspect of Japanese school life,” said Kim and Stuart. DRC’s Sister City Officer Daisy Wang said that the Sister City Exchange Program is a great opportunity for high school students to explore another country and
appreciate different cultures in an increasingly interconnected world. “The exchange program has been running for several years now, and the feedback from the student participants, chaperones and wider community has been fantastic. The opportunity to explore a different part of the world and a different culture is something that I’d encourage all students to apply for,” said Ms Wang. FOCUS ON FLETCHERS
Princess works hard to raise her family
By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY
FILIPINA mother of four Princess Villanueva has been working dayshift for a year-and-a-half on the harvest floor at Fletcher International Exports and, though her children have stayed behind in the Philippines, she and her husband are both determined to work hard, earn well, and make a better life for them all. “The Philippines is a very poor country and there’s not a lot of work and the salary is not enough to live on and raise a big family which is a sad thing, and though it is my country, I can’t change that about it, so we do what we can to be stable for our children and think about and work for their future,” Princess told Dubbo Photo News. “I have 7-year-old twins and a 14-year-old who are in the Philippines, busy going to school and they’re being looked after by my mother and cousins, and a 21-yearold, Kingpaul, who is also working
here in Australia and has worked for Fletchers too.” Prior to moving to Australia, Princess also worked in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, as a supermarket cashier on the Sharjah Corniche, and before that was a home-maker in Manila. It was through their eldest son’s nine-month tenure working at Fletchers and the recommendation of friends who had also taken the leap to work as expatriates in Dubbo, that Princess and her husband, also at Fletchers, decided they would try for jobs here. “So, we were looking for an opportunity to work and be able to send money home to our children, which is what I’m always thinking about, and I didn’t have any expectations when I came here though we knew Fletchers was good, and once we started working here found there are more opportunities if we want to try for them,” she said. “They are nice people here and
there are many Filipinos working across all the departments.” Princess and her husband are now advocates for Fletchers, telling friends and family the company offers a high salary which is paid on time and the people are good to work for, and with. “They’re very helpful and give you lots of opportunities when you’re working here, now and for the future, for example, I could progress to Quality Assurance, and though I think it will be hard work, let’s see,” she said. When they have time off, the couple sometimes enjoy taking road trips and learning about the region, though last year visited Brisbane and Melbourne, and for Christmas this year, have a trip planned to visit South Australia. At the weekends, when they’re relaxing at home, it’s not unusual to find Princess spending time singing and when asked if her husband was a singer too, she replied with a laugh: “No, he just listens.”

National Skills Agreement earmarks billions to grow critical construction workforce THE Housing Industry Association (HIA) welcomes the national cabinet’s announcement of the National Skills Agreement. “The agreement promises to invest $12.6 billion to expand and transform the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector to deliver quality training and reforms which address our critical skills needs,” said HIA Managing Director Jocelyn Martin. “Earlier this year national cabinet committed to building 1.2 million homes over the next five years. To build these much-needed homes, it is critical that we have the key skills and workforce in place to enable us to achieve this target. “This investment is a key plank in addressing the skills shortages, strengthening our
VET sector and training and up-skilling workers into national priority areas including construction. “Part of this agreement includes the establishment of nationally networked Centres of Excellence involving partnerships between TAFEs, universities, Jobs and Skills Councils and industry,” added Ms Martin. Whilst broadly supportive of these targeted ‘Centres of Excellence’ which can focus on key skills gaps, HIA stresses the importance of the Australian Government broadening the focus beyond TAFE to also recognise the key role played by industry specific training organisations. These organisations deliver training developed by indus-
try for industry and also have the capacity to deliver targeted skills in regional areas. Included in the $12.6 billion funding is $100 million to support, grow and retain a quality VET workforce; $250 million to improve VET completions including women and others who face completion challenges; and $142 million to improve foundation skills training capacity, quality and accessibility. “The National Skills Agreement promises to deliver much needed changes to the VET system and the opportunity to target skills and reforms which will make a difference to our industry and our capacity to deliver on the government’s plan to build 1.2 million homes,” concluded Ms Martin.

Where do you work? Mass Nutrition What’s your job? I’m the owner. Why do you Love Your Work? This is my passion - nutrition, health and well-being. I’ve been in this business for 11 years and I love seeing people achieving their goals. I believe energy creates energy - if we exercise when we don’t really feel like it, it will create
more energy and we will feel better. It will help with our mental health as well. Did you grow up in Dubbo? I grew up in Tumut. We came to Wellington first and worked in hospitality and events. I opened Mass Nutrition while in Wellington and eventually moved to Dubbo. Prior to your current job, what did you do? Worked in hospitality and
events at Hermitage Hill. If you could work anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why? I would be doing the same thing, because this really is my passion. What was your first paying job? I used to deliver catalogues into people’s mailboxes. Three words your friends would use to describe you. Motivated, passionate and friendly.
How would you spend a win of a million dollars? I would invest, mostly in shares and stocks, but I would have to start some of my passion projects. I have lots of ideas and plans about implementing educational programs regarding health and well-being. When you were little, what did you think you wanted to be? A barrister!

Stuart Town time capsule opening
By DAVID DIXON NO one knows what’s going to show, when they finally open the Stuart Town time capsule. Lying undisturbed under a slab of concrete for 50 years, the big breaking-of-theseal celebration, is on Sunday, November 26, and everyone is invited to come along. However, in a mysterious twist to proceedings, no details now exist to show what was actually sealed inside the vault way back in the early 1970s. “The people who sealed it, who were here when it was buried, are all gone, so we’ve got no records to show what was put in the capsule in the first place,” Stuart Town Advancement Association President Marcus Hanney said. “We’ve simply no idea, the only thing we have are the details on the plaque saying that it was sealed on November 26, 1973… it’s is going to be fascinating what is inside,” he added. The time capsule was dedicated by thenNSW Premier Sir Robert Askin who had lived in the area as a child. “He’s the one who actually sealed it, he was born near here and went to school in the town when he was young,” Mr Hanney said.
CRACKING OF THE SEAL. The Stuart Town time-capsule was recently rescued from its watery tomb after five decades, just in time for the big re-opening in the School of Arts Hall on Sunday, November 26 — and everyone is invited to come along!. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED
“We also know that he returned here to seal the time capsule back in 1973,” he said of the sometimes-controversial political figure, who dominated state politics from 1965 until his retirement in 1975. The time capsule itself was recently removed from its five-decades-long tomb to examine its structural integrity before the big re-opening in the School of Arts Hall. “We don’t want to have a situation, where we open it in front of the whole town and visitors, and see it’s only filled with 50 years of goo,” he added. On that front, there was both good and bad news… Witnesses said that, while there was a substantial amount of water in the chamber holding the time capsule – comprising an
old water-heater tank coated in fibre-glass – no water ran out of the cylinder upon its removal, and there was no swishing noise of liquid inside. Mr Hanney said that descendants of local families who may have played a part in contributing to the yet-unknown contents of the time capsule, are particularly welcome to the big event. “It’s been under a concrete slab behind the ANZAC Gates, so it’s been very prominent in our thoughts, it’s just that everyone who was involved, has now passed away. “We’ve had a lot of interest from different families, whose relatives may have provided material for the capsule; if they want to claim items, we’re asking to bring ID with them,” Mr Hanney said.
The tight-knit go-getting little community, immortalised under its original name by the AB “Banjo” Paterson in his famous comic poem, The Man from Ironbark, are making a real celebration of the historic occasion. “It’s gonna be in the morning (10.30am); and we’ve got plenty on, we’re having a sausage sizzle, the Railway Hotel is opened up, the two churches, morning teas, Boehme’s Hall, a tour of the historic cemetery. “We want to make a real occasion of the event, it’s going to be a great day, and the best thing is, we don’t actually know what we’ll find inside,” he concluded. For more information, contact Mr Hanney on 0417 467 459.

A huge congratulations to the manager as the shop is just lovely. A really great experience. Congratulations! Thumbs up to the delightful young man Nick on the Coles checkout. I have observed you on a couple of occasions and am very impressed with the friendly service you greet customers with. Certainly an asset to Coles. Thumbs up from the Dubbo ParkRun community to the Colour Copy Shop in Macquarie Street for their contribution of repairing a prized photo frame. Thumbs up to the cover photo on last week’s Dubbo Photo News showing locals loving Halloween, and well done to everyone in Dubbo who got into the ‘spirit’ of Halloween this year. Even though it’s a very American day, we Aussies seem to have embraced it as a fun way for kids to dress up and enjoy themselves. Our household appreciated it even more because we weren’t able to do Halloween during the lockdowns, and this year we met some new neighbours for the first time as we knocked on doors in our street.

Enterprising and dynamic - Dubbo City Physical Culture DUBBO City Physical Culture Club recently competed in the annual Central West Zone Competition at Parkes. Their athletes were amongst other Central West towns such as Wagga Wagga, Lachlan Valley United, East Orange Bathurst, Orana, Parkes, and Pinnacle Clubs, and gained much strength and a growth in their love of “Physie”. According to one of the organisers, Jenny Hunt, the troupe of girls joyously took to the floor in every age group. “That was fantastic for us, as the older girls led the way for our newest members, who put on a demonstration for everyone, including a demonstration,” Jenny said. “The ‘Fairies’, who are three-four years old; are so cute,” she added. One of the Club’s great strengths, she said, is its cohesiveness. “The older members danced, and danced from their heats to semi-finals, and then to the Finals which was very exciting for to experience,” Jen said. “Even though no individual plac7/8s Team with Clare and Jenny. Three teams also took the floor from Dubbo this year, the first time for many years, and the girls grew learning to work as one. “Some had never been involved in ‘Physie’, before let alone performing as a group. “They produced some never-before-seen teamwork, and really gelled together making a performance that left their teachers more than proud.” After along year, Dubbo City Physie, is now focusing on their Christmas party. TREE-CHANGER ROZ IS FLYING HIGH IN NARROMINE PROPERTY MARKET By DAVID DIXON
B
oom times in Narromine are causing the same rental and house purchase shortages seen elsewhere, with Council doing its best to open up new developments in the Shire.
With innovative solutions, including recent sale of dozens of lots at the historic airport and plans to effectively floodproof the town, the future is looking bright for the Shire west of Dubbo. Local realtor, Roz Reynolds, is herself a recent tree-changer from the big smoke, and like many others, is now enjoying the best that country life has to offer. The principal of the local LJ Hooker says, however, that getting a place to lay your head is no walk in the park; though a little better than the postCOVID feeding frenzy. “The sales market and the rental market are both strong with low vacancies; they’re both very tight, though it has stabilised a little bit,” she said. “There’s very little available compared to two or three years ago, but we’ve now got some more properties on the market, but it’s still very
strong” she added. Like many Sydney-siders, she began to look bush during the COVID lockdowns, that impacted the lives of people in larger metropolitan areas disproportionately. “It’s a lovely town, I moved here at the end of 2020, for family reasons, my daughter married a farmer,” she explained. “There’s quite a lot of diversity in the market, tree-changers, investors who buy properties and think, ‘I’ll move here one day’, young families.” One of the innovative land developments that have “taken-off” in town, are a number of lots for recreational flyers to build homes out at the historic Narromine Airport, which trained hundreds of pilots during the dark days of World War II. “There’s been high demand for that, with about 35 lots sold out there, called ‘Sky Park’, there’s also the World Gliding Championships on out here, showing how popular an area it is for flyers,” she said. “We also had the Dolly Parton Festival with about 960 attending the concert, whether it’s living or commuting, it’s a

very vibrant town,” she added.

Narromine Shire Mayor, Councillor Craig Davies, said that Council has sought to alleviate the housing shortage by effectively becoming the district’s major source of sub-divisions. “Things are very tight, it’s almost impossible to get a rental property out here, it’s been so for 18–24 months, so, as a council, we’re basically the major land developer in the Shire over the past three to four years,” Cr Davies said. “This includes at Sky Park, where we developed 27 blocks that have all basically sold within six months… we’ll eventually have 73 blocks at the aerodrome,” he added. Another development is the Kings Park Estate on the eastern side of town, and some larger lots on Depot Road. “These are between 1800 to 2700 square metres, and we’ve sold five of those. “So, in one respect, we’re bringing on-line a good supply of house blocks,” he said. Long-term capital works to effectively make the town finally flood-free, is another good sign for the Shire, he said.
“We’re working to get the flood levy banks finished, although we’re still a couple of years away, and then the whole town will be flood-free for anything up to a one-in-100year deluge. “Once that’s done, we can look at developing anything up to 800 more blocks in the town,” he enthused. A fly in the ointment, however, are the crippling development costs forced on Council by the suffocating red-tape of
State Government regulations. “For instance, the ‘Biodiversity Offset Scheme,’ brought in by the last conservative government, believe it or not, can add between $50,000–$250,000 per block; it’s just crippling country towns,” he said. “It’s estimated that an additional 1000 houses haven’t been built, I know builders who are leaving NSW, just to get away from it,” Cr Davies said.
Year 1 St Pius X
We are the beautiful class of Year 1 at St Pius X, Dubbo. There are 29 kids in our class, each with their own special gifts to offer. We are lucky to have two teachers, Mrs Campbell from Monday to Thursday and Mr Cant on Fridays. Year 1 also have awesome helpers at different points during the week: Miss Goodwin, Mrs Knight, Miss Hinton, Mrs Smith and Mrs Jones. This term we have had a pre-service teacher Miss Bennett. She fits in so nicely into our classroom and has been teaching us lots of wonderful things. We have been learning about how addition and subtraction are related and how to solve these problems efficiently. Mrs Campbell and Mr Cant read lots of books to us. Our favourite book is The Mess That We Made by Michelle Lord where we learnt about how important it is to put our rubbish in the bin and recycle when we can. Miss Bennett has been teaching us about Australia and our neighbouring countries. We love being in this class!

OUT ON A LIMB
ARIES: End friendships that demand too much of your attention. Tidy up your circle of friends and go out and meet new people. Spearheading a project at work will help you develop new friendships with your colleagues. TAURUS: If you’ve recently achieved a great feat or completed a major project, it’s perfectly normal to want to celebrate. Share this joy with your colleagues or loved ones by hosting a party. GEMINI: Avoid delays by doubling your efforts and focusing on your objectives. However, taking time to relax and enjoy yourself is also important to regain your energy. CANCER: If your family is scattered far and wide, you have two options for getting together for the holidays: visit each family member individually or go on a trip with them. LEO: This week, you’ll excel at communicating and negotiating. You’ll be able to reach an agreement for the financing of a professional or personal project. You could be afraid of disappointing someone. VIRGO: You’ll be very successful this week, especially if you work in sales. You’ll increase your clientele to such an extent that management will be obliged to promote you. What’s more, you’ll excel in the small details. LIBRA: At work, a polished presentation could change everything and help you succeed. An infusion of fun will also be appreciated by your superiors. In love, passion is the driving force behind commitment. SCORPIO: It’s important to discuss family matters openly. Silence can lead to confusion. Moreover, you may need to bring work home with you a few evenings this week. SAGITTARIUS: If you’re easy to talk to, you’ll be able to expand your network of contacts and relationships at work. Even at work, you’ll never run out of things to talk about and will be able to make new acquaintances. CAPRICORN: You may find money in the bottom of an old jacket you forgot about last year. In your relationship, it’s important to communicate more openly, even if it’s just to ask for more affection. AQUARIUS: You’ll be very dynamic this week and start organising various events you’ll soon be attending. In the face of a certain emotional heaviness, a little internal housekeeping will be beneficial. PISCES: Silence is golden, speech is silver. You have an extraordinary source of creativity at your disposal. Take advantage of your home environment to create something beautiful or explore a new spiritual practice.

Remembering Tony Corcoran; fine cricketer, real gentleman
Below are a number of tributes from cricketing colleagues, to one of Dubbo’s 1970s cricket legends, Tony Corcoran, who recently passed away. ••• Graham Mackie “Tony Corcoran was not just a fantastic teacher, and a great cricketer, he was also a wonderful mentor! He took young players like Paul and Melvyn Bourke, Graham Tink, Andrew Hamblin, and Peter Orbell, under his wing at Dubbo High, and was captain of Country Firsts against a mighty Sydney team in is day. I first met Tony, when I arrived in Dubbo as a first-year-out secondary teacher at Dubbo South High, in 1974 South High had a team in the Whitney Cup, which was made-up of Lloyd Keir and myself, the rest being schoolkids such as Wayne Munro, Mark Ferguson, Steve Wheeler, and the Allan twins. Tony was one of those classy left-handers who played the good ball on its merits, and dispatched the bad ball to the boundary. He was always immaculately dressed, and his cricket was reflective of this. He moved to Glen Innes, where he became well-known in the Stock and Station industry, and later became Head of Elders – at some stage, also playing for University in the Brisbane grade competition. I came across him again when I was playing for the Queensland Cricketers Club Over 40’s in Inverell – he opened the innings and did not realise I was opening the bowling – I bowled the first ball to him and we both started laughing, I walked down the wicket shook his hand, and finished the over. Tony came back to the 1970s cricket reunion I organised in Dubbo in March, and had a great time reminiscing about those good old days. I also had a few art shows at Glen Innes Regional Gallery, and Tony
and Di came along to those where we had a few beers and then wentout for dinner. I also used to see him at the cattle sales in Inverell, where he was still wheeling-and-dealing, long after retirement and where he was the “King” amongst other agents. Sadly, he has now left us, and I am proud to say, I have been a mate of his for nearly 50 years A great cricketing icon of the bush, who was well-respected by everyone who played with and against him. RIP Tony” ••• Peter Leslie “I was transferred to Dubbo High School in 1971, where I first met Tony Corcoran. It was decided that Dubbo High would enter a team in the Whitney Cup competition, the premier division in Dubbo cricket. Tony jumped at the opportunity to play with the students, along with a transport business owner, a stock auctioneer, and a teacher. Tony was not only a super batsman, but had a wonderful demeanour. My memories are that nothing seemed to phase him whether he scored a century or a duck. (rare) Tony was a great mentor to the young students with Paul Bourke and Graham Tink going on to have very successful careers in Sydney grade cricket along with Peter Orbell and Andrew Hamblin gaining CHS recognition. Tony would have been a great asset for any Sydney Cricket team but like many others country life Dubbo then Glen Innes was for him where he could mentor kids on their cricket journey. Tony will be sadly missed.” ••• Paul Bourke “During my final school years in the early 1970s, I had the opportunity and privilege to play with Tony at both club and representative levels. He joined our Dubbo High team when we first entered the Whitney Cup competition in 1971.

We all knew he was a terrific player but, as we got to know him on a more personal level, his standing amongst all members of the team quickly grew. What a humble and talented cricketer he was! His achievements that season were impressive to say the least as we took out the premiership. Furthermore, we were teammates in the Dubbo First XI that won the Far West Competition after an almighty tough final against Wellington. Tony was also the NSW Country First XI team captain and, unsurprisingly, was named Dubbo Cricketer of the Year for 1971/2. The following season was just as fulfilling as the cricket and other life skills mentoring continued. As schoolboys, we much admired Tony but, with age and maturity, we look back on how lucky we were to have the opportunity to meet and play with such a great role model. He was an excellent cricketer and equally nice person. If he ever came to Sydney to play, he would

have made his mark and certainly fitted in easily to the strong culture of Saint George where both Peter Leslie (teacher at Dubbo High, team captain, former NSW representative who played in many premierships under the legendary late Warren Saunders) and myself played. From memory, he was a true gentleman. This was quickly confirmed when we caught up at the Dubbo Cricket Reunion earlier this year. It was so enjoyable to chat after so many years. Sadly missed. May he Rest in Peace” ••• Graham Tink Half a century later, I still remember Tony Corcoran’s first game in Dubbo. It was for Coalbaggie on No. 3 Oval in the Sunday Dawson Cup. The wheat harvest was in full swing, so Coalbaggie struggled to get a full team. A rag-tag group of three or four regulars, plus drinking mates, supplemented by a group of very young schoolboys, made-up the numbers.
One only wonders what Tony’s first impressions were of Dubbo cricket. On winning the toss, he opened the batting. I cannot remember the opposition, but he batted aggressively for a classy half century. This guy was a quality player. Within a week or two, unsurprisingly, he was selected to represent a strong Dubbo team in the Far West District Competition. In full flight, Tony Corcoran was always entertaining to watch. However, his greatest contribution, in my opinion, was as a mentor to young players. Along with Peter Leslie, he played a major role in nurturing a group of young Dubbo High School players in the winning of the Whitney Cup competition in the early 70s. He played a similar role with a group of South Dubbo High students when they entered the Whitney Cup a few seasons later. I am aware that after he left Dubbo he continued to mentor and support emerging young cricketers. I am certain that the Tony Corcoran innings, that Stuart Rowlands remembers on No.1 Oval, was for Dubbo High. My recollection of the day was a pretty handy Newtown attack being taken to task by Tony Corcoran and a teenage Paul Bourke. In particular, Tony’s powerful driving down the ground was a highlight. The batting master class was not wasted on his young protégé who seamlessly adopted the same attacking strategies. A quick learner, Paul Bourke went on to become a highly-respected long-term first grade cricketer in Sydney. In the 70s, country kids who had the opportunity to play with and against the likes of Tony Corcoran, were always well-prepared to take on the challenges of Sydney Grade Cricket. Tony Corcoran, great country cricketer, and terrific guy, will always be remembered positively. It was fabulous to catch up with him at the Dubbo 70s cricket reunion. RIP Tony”

Contributed by DUBBO CYCLE CLUB DUBBO Cycle Club has continued its track season with the inaugural wheel-race, the first of five races. This event coincided with the Junior Trophy Night, providing not only an opportunity for seasoned riders to showcase their strengths but also a platform for the “tiny tots” to receive some well-deserved recognition for their participation in Dubbo Cycle Club’s track racing. A warm welcome also to Baye Carolan, Milia Carolan, and Eric Green, who joined the club for the first time recently. The warm-up scratch race, saw Euan Billsborough, clinching the victory in Junior Division One, followed by Reggie Berryman and Tommy Tanswell. In the Super Tots category, Elsie Richardson once again demonstrated her determination, securing the win with Cameron Robertson in second, and Alfie Allen Baker in third, alongside newcomers Louie Gibbs and Billy Robertson, including the debutant Eric Green. Isabelle Richardson claimed the top spot in the Tiny Tots event, accompanied by newcomer Wesly Gibbs in second, Walter Hedger in third, and the front-marker, Reuben, crossing the finish line in a popular third place. In the opening senior scratch race, Conner Billsborough dominated D-Grade, securing a clear win, followed by Joel Hedger and Robbie Lennox. In C-Grade, Jason Billsborough emerged victorious in the race, with Sidney Pickering and Georgia Farr claiming second and third place, respectively. The Super Tots returned for their final race, where Cameron Robertson achieved a great win, accompanied by Elsie Richardson and Eric Green in third, showcasing a remarkable performance from the back mark, and the ever-present powerhouse in Alfie in third. The next wheel-race, sponsored by Dubbo Hard Core Soils and Earthmoving, witnessed Euan Billsborough claiming a superb victory, followed by Reggie Berryman in second, and Tommy Tanswell in third. In the Women’s Wheel-Race, Emily Hines,

starting from next to the back of the field, secured the win, with Simone Grounds in second after doing a huge amount of critical work to get-up, and Georgia Farr with a very brave ride in third. In the Men’s Wheel-Race, Cooper Farr took a well-timed victory, Sindey Pickering was in second, and Zac Fuller tried a last-second attack to steal the win. Jason Billsbourough was in fourth, and William Tanswell in fifth place. The Tiny Tots and Super Tots received a cheerful presentation of their trophy night, sponsored by Central West Fire & Safety, bringing smiles to everyone, especially the families of the young participants. In the two-lap or Half-Mile Handicap, Euan once again emerged victorious, with
Tommy taking second, and Reggie in third. D-Grade saw Joel as the winner, followed by Conner in second, and Robbie in third. C-Grade witnessed Georgia Farr achieving a superb win, with Zac Fuller in second and Imogen in third. B-Grade featured Darrell Wheeler as the winner, while Emily and Simone took third and fourth, respectively. In A-Grade, Time Hines and Jason Farr secured the top positions. The final scratch race concluded Junior Division ones racing with Euan and Tommy in that order. Conner took the top spot in D-Grade, followed by Robbie and Joel. C-Grade saw Jason Billsborough winning, with Sidney Pickering as the runner-up and Cooper Farr in third.
B-Grade experienced a fierce competition between speedsters Emily and Simone, with Emily triumphing in a fast and close sprint, and Darrell securing third place. Jason Farr emerged as the winner in the final scratch race, with Tim Hines in second. Looking ahead, Dubbo Cycle Club will return to a standard program next week, with the jackpot starting again at $50 after going-off. All amenities and canteen services will be available for spectators. Younger attendees can ride for free, and those interested in joining the velodrome action, can obtain an Auscycling race license. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the racing every Tuesday at 5.30pm Sign-On and 6.30pm racing.
Counting down to Christmas after another great year Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ SUE Armstrong, Allan Stratford and Gordon Scott had to contend with the wind as well as Vicki Hummel, Pete Bennison and Col Dover who mastered the conditions better during their first eight ends. Trailing by five, Sue, Al and Gordon mounted a comeback that yielded 10 shots and saw them draw level at 15-all but Vicki, Pete and Col took the game having won 10 ends to six. Doc Livingston, Eric Satchell
and Brian Jones did enough in the first eight ends to ward off Mary Perry, who is gaining confidence with her stick, Steve Kelly and Anthony Coe. The good Doc and his team maintained that advantage to win 14-11. Frank Bartlett, Frank Amstrong and Colin Teale raced out of the gates like a Melbourne Cup front-runner and were never headed, downing Paul Martin, John McKenzie and Pete Ruzans 17-12. The flurry of activity in the first half made an eight shot
lead impossible to breach. There are two lots of eight ends in a Sundy Bowls bowls game. Chris Castlehouse, Therese Gaio and Graham Ross made the first theirs, winning six for a total of 10 including a five count on the 8th. Chris Castlehouse (Swinger), Shirley Marchant, and Pete Sinclair kept in touch, four behind. Chris is appreciated for getting to master the act of swinging, and Shirley and Pete used her to do a ‘runner’ through the second half, adding 12 as well as restricting
Therese and Graham (with Chris) to just two. It was quite a turnaround for Chris, Shirley and Pete - 18 to 12. The scoreboard read 2-14 after eight! The sad two shots belonged to Di Hildebrandt, Greg Brown and Phil Knight; 14 to Sue O’Dea, Gaye (go-girl) Cottee and Kevin Scott. They improved by adding eight after the break but Sue, Gaye with Kevin cruised on to a well judged 17 to 10 win, as well as third place for the morning. Ron McCauley, Ruby Stockings
and John Cole bonded for a 21-10 victory over Leo Balstad, Mel Giddings, and Matt Quill. It earned them second spot for the day. Tod O’Dea was over-the-moon at the result of his game. Playing with Gary Huggins and Ian Humphries, Tod was to lift the trophy as number one team for the day. Probably not too pleased were Sue McCauley, Julie Brown, and Al Andriske as they went down 22-7. Tod was still smiling at last drinks as it was his first team of the day award all year!

Congratulations Glen! Bowls NSW Volunteer of the Year
By GEOFF MANN
RETIRED school principal, Glen Morrison – with his love for sport and winning way of encouraging young players onto the lawn bowls greens – recently earned himself a prestigious award. It was a bit of a surprise for the popular bowler, but the recently bagged the prize for Bowls NSW, Volunteer of the Year! ‘Yes! Some of the members had, I’ll use the word surreptitiously, ‘put together’ some information on my involvement, and told me I was a final three contender, so it was a huge shock when my name was read-out,” Glen said. “I suppose it was a bit like holding seven or eight shots, with one bowl to play, and your opponent fires a drive and takes the jack into the ditch to kill the end!” he added. Glen reflected on his journey into bowls. “Rick Bohm, who just passed away, and I, were playing a fair bit of golf in the mid-80s and a few health issues arose for both of us, so we headed up the hill to West Dubbo Bowling Club, and we’ve fallen in love with the greens,” he remembered. “Then I got into coaching and involvement with the juniors,” he added. His involvement, he admits, has led to some fantastic tangible outcomes for the local club. “We now have a Junior Academy at Club Dubbo, with blokes like John Rodis, who is the Bowls Coach of the Year and NSW rep Anthony Brown and others. “We have introduced some very fine young players to the sport.” In speaking of the past, Glen recalled players like David Ferguson, Jono Davis, Zac Miller, and Cooper Dart, and the Western

Zone team that has taken State Titles over the years. Some of these greats – like David and Jono – have gone on to represent Australia at bowls. “Over the years, we have set-out to convince the kids and families, that bowls is a game for everyone, not just the oldies,” Glen said. “In fact, the State Bowling Team, has an average age lower than the Australian Cricket team!
It’s a game for young people, and we’re trying to expand the reach and get as many young ones involved as we can,” he added. Glen says that, for just $10 a year, Club Dubbo provides free coaching, free equipment, uniforms, scholarships, and has plenty of social events to make sure everyone feels welcome. “I was reading the other day, that the cost to parents for even
one child in any sport, is about $500 a year for fees and whatever, and that doesn’t include travel and accommodation. “So, bowls in comparison, is a very affordable option,” he said with an encouraging smile. Glen says Club Dubbo is enormously proud of the recognition it has gained as a mecca for bowls, with the International Fours being run over the past two years, which
has put Dubbo on the world stage. “It certainly has, so much so we have now been engaged to host the NSW Championships over 16 days. It will bring a lot of people from the sandbar and across the ‘sandstone curtain’ to enjoy our wonderful lifestyle and the superb facilities across the three clubs in our city.” The Club, he said, has become an a example of how other bowls groups can survive and thrive in these tough times. “Bowls NSW is looking at us as a bit of an exemplar, of an organisation that can take-on things and do them properly. “That is why for the very first time the State titles for players with special needs will be run in conjunction next year,” Glen said proudly. Glen Morrison, another humble person. achieving great things on behalf of our community.

Latrelle and JArome are spreading positive vibes
By GEOFF MANN TWO of the NRL’s best-known personalities, Latrelle Mitchell (South Sydney) and Jarome Luai (Penrith Panthers) showed there is more to life than rugby league. The two superstars recently gave up some valuable off-season rest time to travel out west and share their thoughts with kids who have grown up with glazed eyes looking out for them. “We were both the same when NRL

Dennis Valantine is our “McGrath” By GEOFF MANN SWIMMING and water polo have been a part of Dennis Valentine’s life “forever” and, on Friday night, his endeavours were recognised at the 21st Dubbo Regional Sports Awards. Dennis was honoured to receive the John and Nita McGath Award, for his contribution to aquatic sports. “I was always in the water, either swimming or playing polo,” Denis said. “It was just an ordinary part of my life; my daughter took to it as well, and as I became more involved with her, I took a more active role in coaching squads,” he added. It is obvious from years of pre-dawn starts and post-work sessions, that this is not a chore, but a passion. “I love to see kids developing skills and setting times they may not have
thought possible. “Swimming sets them up with ‘forever traits’ like ‘focus’, ‘dedication’, and ‘determination;, to be the best you can be,” he told an enthralled audience at the Awards’ evening. His words echoed those of guest speaker, Bec Smyth, who went from Dunedoo to play World Cups and Tests for the Wallaroos. The Narromine High PE teacher and mother of four, has spent the past few years travelling at least twice a week to Canberra where she captained the Brumbies in Womens’ Super Rugby. “It takes a family and a community to back you, but if you are prepared to go to bed early and keep your goals in mind, you can achieve whatever you want,” This was the advice, that the toughas-teak former forward, who also played fullback for the veteran West-
ern Googars league team on the weekend, shared with both sportspeople and parents. Dennis’s commitments as a swimmer, water polo player, referee, and coach, extend over 60 years and he is especially proud to be playing a role in the growth in water polo. “I understand it was a big part of sport in Dubbo in the 50s and 60s, and has had a couple of returns over the years,” he recalled. “Once, when three-time Olympian, Ted Pierce sparked a revival in the 70s and, more recently when former Olympic captain, Sam McGregor, returned to the city.” Dennis is now retired from a career in local government, but is showing no signs of winding back his efforts mentoring, encouraging, and delighting, in his young swimmers.
