LOCAL TURTLE RECOVERS AT ZOO By SHARON BONTHUYS

A

n Eastern Long-necked Turtle has been returned to the wild near Narromine after receiving life-saving treatment at the Wildlife Hospital at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The turtle was rescued by a member of the public from a road in the Narromine region, and brought to the Wildlife Hospital where x-rays revealed several shell fractures. Over the next 11 weeks, the Zoo’s veterinary team stabilised one fracture, flushed and cleaned another, conducted regular x-rays, and provided the turtle with pain relief, antibiotics and fluid support. “Australian snake-necked turtles eat in water, but for wounds and fractures to heal they need to be dry and clean, so the turtle was allowed in water for an hour every few days to eat and maintained in a warm, dry hospital enclosure for the rest of its time here,” said veterinarian Dr Sarah Alexander. “After a couple of weeks, it started eating well, and 10 weeks after arrival we were able to remove the pin that had been stabilising the fracture.” The turtle was released into the Macquarie River near the Warren Road by veterinary

nurse Katrina Burrell, who said releasing animals back to the wild “is the best part of my job”. “We selected this release site as it was close to where he was originally found, but it was also good natural habitat for the turtle and in a safe area away from the road,” she said. “Every year we see a lot of injured and diseased animals at the Wildlife Hospital, and unfortunately not all can be successfully rehabilitated and released. “So when we do get to release animals back to the wild it is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling to know that we can have a positive impact on our local native wildlife and ecosystems. “There is growing pressure on our ecosystems from changing climate, severe weather events, human interference and habitat destruction, which results in a lot of injured, diseased and displaced animals. So having a direct role in helping them with a second chance is a huge part of why I love my job.” Dr Alexander said the case was a reminder for motorists to take care on the roads. “As it has warmed up, our reptiles in particular are out

exploring during most of the day so if you’re lucky you’ll see a lot more of them,” she said. “If you find any injured wildlife on the roads, the best thing you can do is to call WIRES and one of their carers will be able to assist in getting the animal to us or another local wildlife hospital. “It’s always heart-warming to take an animal that in all likelihood wouldn’t have made it without our help, treat it, keep it comfortable and support it while it heals and then release it back into the wild, it’s one of the most satisfying parts of our job. “This turtle was just a juvenile and Australian snakenecked turtles can live for up to 50 years, so knowing you’ve helped save an animal that hopefully has a long life ahead of it is a great feeling. “We hope it will go on to Veterinarian Dr Rebecca Robey inspects an Eastern Long-necked Turtle at the Wildlife live a long and happy life out Hospital at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Charmaine’s dedication to youth

Youth Development Officer at Dubbo Regional Council Charmaine Mara. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/ LANA EATHER.

CHARMAINE Mara’s hard work and dedication to her position as Youth Development Officer at Dubbo Regional Council has been recognised by the Member for Dubbo Electorate Dugald Saunders, and parliament, in recent times. Charmaine has worked at Dubbo Regional Council for over eighteen months, and has successful organised events such as a movie night in Dubbo, a silent disco, movie day in Wellington, and community day as part of Youth Week in April this year.

Charmaine modestly credits her success to collaborations with fellow community groups and service organisations. It was one such community group that praised Charmaine’s commitment to social inclusion and her ability to create a sense of community at events. Charmaine previously completed eight years as a youth support worker with Mission Australia, and says: “I always went to work for the kids. I have always been a people person, and I love my job. Empathy and passion to be here are my driving forces, but

it is nice to be recognised for my efforts.” Charmaine is excitedly organising for her next Youth Week event in 2024 with a terrific lineup including a show from Aussie FMX Motocross. Freestyle Motocross (FMX) is a type of motocross where motorbike riders attempt to impress audiences with tricks, stunts and jumps. It will definitely be a popular encounter. And it is without a doubt that Charmaine will continue to engage, empower and inspire our region’s youths.

Make it a real Merry Christmas by shopping and supporting local DUBBO is starting to feel a lot like Christmas, with Council’s “shop local this Christmas holiday” campaign, recently kicking-off! The promotion, designed to encourage us all to support retailers in the golden west, has a number of different elements, including such favourites as, the Jingle Bucks competition, Elf Hunt, and Colouring-in competition. Mayor, Councillor Mathew Dickerson welcomed the “Christmas in the Dubbo Region” initiative, which emphasises our community; be they local heroes, business-owners, and residents, looking for some fun in the leadup to the holiday season. “We are excited to launch this program, which celebrates the spirit of our community and supports the growth of our local economy,” Cr Dickerson said. “No matter how big or small you spend, each locally purchased gift, gives back to our wider community in a much larger way; by making the choice to shop within the region, people not only discover unique and high-quality products but are also contributing to the prosperity and vitality of our local cities and towns,” he added. One major event will be the Wellington and Dubbo Christ-

mas trees that will sparkle in the sun and spread the festive cheer in both CBDs this year. Revamped Christmas ornaments led to the creation of individual identities for the Christmas Trees, with Wellington boasting a blue and silver colour

scheme, while Dubbo shines in a golden champagne colour. “Council staff have been working hard in the background to upcycle the sun-faded decorations into beautiful ornaments that reflect the festive feeling and sparkle of our community,”

Cr Dickerson said. The ‘Christmas in the Dubbo Region’ campaign has lots of activities and prizes to be won for the whole family. Jingle Bucks is back with the community encouraged to spend locally to go into the draw to win a share in

$5,000 in MyDubbo Region gift cards. “There is also a Christmas Colouring-In competition for children aged from 0–12 years, which features the work by local artist, Gillian Pedrana,” he added. The ever-popular Elf Hunt will once again be a highlight for children and an activity for the whole family. This involves a total of 10 elves hidden in shops across the Local Government Area and, once the Elves are located, children can take their answers to the Dubbo or Wellington Visitors Information Centres to receive a prize. “This year we want to encourage community members to explore the entire region to see what is on offer for Christmas. The Christmas map showcases the many shopping precincts we have in the region. The map can be downloaded digitally or found in the Dubbo Photo News this issue, November 23,” Cr Dickerson said. New Place New Taste New Memories We are a small family team of Thai chefs, and foodies who love to eat, love flavour and are determined to bring true, authentic, Thai flavours and dishes to Dubbo so people can experience the rich culture and flavours of Thailand and our hometown, Chiang Mai, without having to travel to Sydney or get on an aeroplane. We bring farm to table, utilising local suppliers and produce whenever we can. We are determined not to use any frozen products, so wherever possible all our ingredients are fresh and each dish is prepared in true Thai tradition in house and to the highest quality by our Thai chefs. Including all our entrees, like our vegetable spring rolls, money bags and satay chicken skewers. Traditionally, true Thai cuisine is prepared just before eating, using only the freshest ingredients. It is packed full of flavours and very often a lot of heat from all the chillies. We have toned this down a little for Dubbo, but we are always happy to make it as hot as our customers like it. Thai food is a delicate balance of sour, sweet and salty. Sour from ingredients such as tamarind, lemon and kaffir lime leaves. Sweet from ingredients like palms sugar and coconut milk or cream and salty from the unique blend of special Thai sauces, which is unique to each Thai chef. Another part of our mission has been to create a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere for our customers to unwind and enjoy our recipes, along with a wine, beer, or a cocktail or two. In step with our recipes, we aimed to create a décor that was the best quality, new, modern and a little bit funky. Just like our monkey theme which follows on from our name “Ling Ling” which means “two monkeys” in Thai. Not to take ourselves too seriously, but to focus mainly on making the Best Thai dishes. One of the most difficult aspects to creating the freshest and best Thai dishes in a rural city like Dubbo, has been to find reliable sources of the freshest and unique ingredients used in true Thai cuisine, such as fresh lime leaves, Thai basil, Thai mint, star anise, fresh coriander amongst others. But perhaps the biggest challenge has been to find a reliable source of the best and freshest seafood which is widely used in Thai cuisine. Thankfully, we have been able to partner with some amazing businesses ng local family f who specialise in bringing ging these things all the way to Dubbo. Dub

Donna's groovy new role B

By SHARON BONTHUYS

reast cancer survivor and awareness advocate Donna Falconer has swapped her parttime admin role at the BreastScreen NSW facility in Dubbo for community engagement with the organisation’s mobile team visiting regional communities. She’s swapped rides as well, resting the iconic Groovy Booby Bus following its recent mammoth tour of Australia, while she travels with another pink and white icon, the much larger BreastScreen NSW mobile van. Following a stint at Mudgee, the BreastScreen team will visit Narromine and Trangie during November and early December. Donna will be there with the team to personally meet and greet local residents who pop along to the van for their pre-arranged breast screen appointments. “I can’t wait!” Donna said. Her last visit to the region was during the inaugural Dolly Festival in 2022, which started many important conversations among festival goers. Not long after she left on an epic 20,000 kilometre journey to spread the breast cancer awareness message across Australia. “I met my goal to visit every state and territory and every capital city,” she said of the journey that took nearly 10 months. Along the way, Donna gave away 500 copies of her book My Time: Through Breast Cancer and Beyond, which charts her own personal journey with breast cancer. “I left copies at roadhouses,

roadside street libraries, book exchanges, and just chatting to people,” she said. Along the way she also caught up with many current and former residents of Dubbo on her travels. Donna started her new role on her return and is enjoying supporting the mobile unit staff and engaging with the community. “It’s so important for women to know that free breast screening is available for anyone over the age of 40. After 50 you go on a register, and once you’re 74 you’re still able to have a screen if you want one,” she said. Breast screening is free for women aged 40-74 and highly recommended for women aged over 50. Screening is not offered to women under 40 as younger women tend to have higher breast density and lower risk of cancer, according to BreastScreen NSW. However, Donna said women under 40, and indeed women of all ages, should maintain awareness of their breasts and conduct regular monthly checks. “Knowing your normal – what normal looks like for you – is really important.” She also recommended following Pink Hope, an organisation that advocates for young women and awareness of hereditary cancer. Ultimately, Donna would like everyone to be breast-aware, as that vigilance will help save lives. “Men don’t understand they can get breast cancer, too.” Women over 40 can make appointments for free screenings

FOCUS ON FLETCHERS

Supportive workplace sits well with Tony

By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY

TONY Ponting was one of the first group of Fijians to ever take up employment with Fletcher International Exports in Dubbo, just under three years ago. The 35-year-old was fortunate to be one of 30 workers selected by a joint venture initiative between the Australian and Fijian governments, though his role as fellmonger at Fletchers is very different to the qualification, he earned at the Fiji National University. “I studied accounting in high school then went to Fiji University to study business accounting and worked as that for a while, before accepting this role to come to Australia,” he told Dubbo Photo News. “The first week here, we were so excited, but then we started missing home, missing the food and feeling homesick but I eventually I got used to it, and now, I tell my friends I’m not coming back because I’m not homesick anymore and though we enjoy it in Fiji, it can also be a struggle so we come to Australia to make money and we’re able to send money home

while living a better life here too,” he explained. Tony’s parents immigrated to Australia in 2008 and live in Foster so he doesn’t get as homesick as others though his uncles and cousins are there, but he can visit his parents whenever he’s able. “I take food there and my mum cooks it. Back home we eat vegetable-based foods, we love the greens, so we eat root crops called casawa, and taro and taro leaves, but here in Australia we eat rice every day,” he said. Lifestyle change is an unavoidable part of the expatriate way of life, and for Tony, the newness of living and working in Australia had its surprises, including the workplace culture at Fletchers, which is structured to ensure workers are and feel supported. “We were surprised to find management were not strict here and they treat us differently compared to home; so, they look after us and the CEO, Melissa Fletcher says we’re family, because at home bosses sometimes shout, tell you what to do, what not to do, scold you, and you feel like you want to walk out, but they just

don’t do that here, it’s something very different.” For the past three years, Tony has worked in the fellmongery or “felly” section at Fletchers where sheep skins are sent for processing and prepared for export or made in Australia into other by-products, and he arrived with no experience in any of it. “That was not a problem at all, because you are learning on the job and your supervisor is always there to help you and show you what to do.” In explaining the processes of his work, Tony highlights that after harvesting, nothing is wasted or thrown away. “When we receive the skins from the harvest floor, we prepare them and trim them correctly, which includes separating the wool from the skin, then after the skins are baked, they’re sent to the salt shed, where they’re treated with salt, boxed up, and then made ready for shipment. “The wool goes away for making into clothing lines for example, and the skins can come back to Australia as things like seat covers, rugs, that sort of thing,” he said.

LOVE YOUR WORK

DUBBO Regional Council (DRC) and the University of Sydney’s School of Rural Health Western NSW Training Hub recently held an event to further encourage general practitioners (GPs) and those studying to relocate to the region, Some 22 GP Registrars and their partners attended the event at The Establishment Bar in Dubbo. It was an opportunity to connect with representatives from the medical industry and community groups, and hear a little about Dubbo’s history as shared by Aunty Narrell during the Welcome to Country. Attendees also heard from local GP Samantha Fitzpatrick who relocated from Sydney to Dubbo for medical training and transitioned to her current role as a regional GP. The university indicated that GP Registrars were making relocation

decisions based on their connection to the community as well as availability of services for themselves and families. “Keynote speaker Dr Samantha Fitzpatrick shared her remarkable journey and decision to relocate from Sydney to Dubbo 10 years ago. [It] really connected with the attendees,” said DRC Development and Visitor Services Team Leader Tim Nichols. “Unsurprisingly, Dr Fitzpatrick has also convinced her in-laws to make the tree-change to Dubbo where it’s a five-minute drive to everything. “The interactive and engaging dialogue underscored the collaborative spirit of the evening and reinforced [local government] commitment to supporting skilled workers as they embrace the region as their new home.”

Karlee Funnell

Where do you work and how long have you been there? I’ve recently started employment with Dubbo Regional Council in the Regional Events branch. What is your current role? I am the Administrative Officer for Regional Events, which includes Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre, Showgrounds and the Events Unit. What or who gives you something to smile about at work? So far all aspects of my new employment have been positive, however experiencing the wide array of talent and opportunities the Dubbo Region has available has been a key highlight. How does your job challenge you? Being a new employee, everything is new, so finding my feet was the largest challenge I initially thought I would face. However I think I’m beginning to grasp my role successfully. What’s been the most embarrassing/funny moment at work? I am terrible with names, therefore trying to remember my colleagues’ names was a little embarrassing during my first couple of weeks… however as the days go by I am improving. What was your first job ever and how much did you make? My first job ever was in hospitality during my first years of high school and I don’t really remember how much I was paid. Best professional advice you’ve ever gotten? That in order to grow you need to experience challenges. When you were a child, what did you dream of growing up to be? I had once wanted to be a teacher. Do you think robots or AI could ever replace your job? I think AI and technology can definitely assist in automation of a range of corporate functions, however I think that there will always be a need for interpersonal connections. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? My love for online shopping.

CHEAP AS CHIPS: Sponsor our fantastic local Show

BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK

By DAVID DIXON LOOKING towards its 150th celebration, there’s never been a better time to sponsor a category for the 2024 Dubbo Show. With opportunities for dozens of categories now open, sponsoring an event at one of our great regional events is cheap, cheery, and worthwhile, Show Secretary Sue Hood explained. “All the sections are open for sponsorship, there would be somewhere for everyone to find a category they’re interested in,” she said. “We’ve got woodcraft, cooking, art, photography, vegetables and fruit, yard dog trials, wood chopping, poultry… there’s dozens of competitions looking for support,” she added. Other events include the Showgirl and Tiny Tot pageants; Rural Achiever Competition; utes; the demolition derby; shearing; the animal nursery; horse, pony, and riding events; show jumping; beef cattle and junior heifer; and the good old jams and preserves section. Sponsorship is surprisingly cheap, providing a great way for local business houses to raise their public profile, while also lending a helping hand to one of our great local institutions. “Some sections are only a few dollars, in fact, if someone wanted to provide sponsorship of $250, they could almost sponsor a whole section,” Sue enthused. “Sponsorship interest comes and goes, depending on how the local economy is going. One thing: we can’t get anything out of big companies, a lot of them simply aren’t that community-minded,” she added.

It’s a unique event that brings people together from, not just the local area, but throughout the state, so chipping in a few dollars represents fantastic value-for-money, Sue believes. “On good days, we can get two to three thousand people in here. We’re the fifth largest show in regional NSW, after say, Bathurst, Coffs Harbour, Canberra, and Newcastle. We draw visitors, exhibitors, and competitors from throughout the state… it definitely punches above its weight,” Sue said proudly. With the first show almost exact-

ly 150 years ago, in 1872, Sue remembers the good and bad times of the local event, over the four decades she has been involved. “We’ve missed about 14 shows in that time in total, these were due to wars, lockdowns, that sort of thing. We also missed a few years due to the harsh economic times, but it’s always come back. We had a pretty good show last year, and came-out about ‘even-Stephens’, which is a good result,” Sue said. Secretary of the show since 1996, she recently oversaw publication of a history of the event, highlighting its traditional autumn date, with next year’s iteration being held mid-month. “It’s called Three Days in May… we did about 500 copies, and it would make a great gift for anyone with a love of a great country show,” Sue said. “It brings people together, it brings the community to one place, and showcases the best in country life,” Sue concluded.

Sing it out

LOUD!

Sharon Simons – pianist

A

s the words of the Beatles’ famous hit ‘All my Loving’ resonated from the David Palmer Centre, it was an atmosphere of unity and kinship for the 110-strong group of Sing Out Choir and guests. The Sing Out Choir began as an initiative of Dementia Counsellor with NSW Health Anne Gemmell in 2021. “When I commenced in my role, it quickly became apparent to me that there was a huge need, and a gap that I could fill, and an opportunity to provide a successful program to help support and benefit those living with dementia, their carers and family. Initially I spent significant hours re-

searching the benefits of music, singing, and the effects this has on the dementia brain. I knew I could make a positive impact by way of using the power of notes and harmonies to connect those living with dementia and their families with the general public. Also, to enable people living with dementia and their carer to continue to live in their homes for as long as possible,” shares Anne. Research on music therapy and dementia has shown music can improve quality of life by impacting on areas such as memory recall, mood enhancement and social interaction.

In 2022 Anne successfully gained three government grants. Anne has created a community choir that meets weekly on Tuesdays from 11am-12.30pm at the Old Lourdes Hospital site. “Conductor Camila Ward and pianist/ accompanist Sharon Simons joined the choir soon after we gained funding. Together we are building a community and a sense of belonging, as well contributing to the positive effects of music.” The choir will continue to encourage dementia advocacy, awareness and support for ongoing education and assistance.

The choir was recently entertained and joined by the touring six-piece ensemble Luminescence Chamber Singers from Canberra. The ensemble encouraged the unbound potential of our original instrument: the human voice. Plans are also being made for the upcoming second concert of the Sing Out Choir on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at the Dubbo Regional Theatre & Convention Centre. Last year’s event was a sell-out of over 500 tickets. The Sing Out Choir welcomes dementia clients, carers, family, friends and volunteers to join the weekly session and morning tea on Tuesdays at 11am.

WELLINGTON NEWS

Digging deep on caves’ extinct megafauna earns a state-wide gong A UNIQUE heritage project involving local students telling the tales of giant extinct marsupial species found at Wellington Caves recently won a state-wide gong. The ‘Digging Deep Time’ program delivers a whole-of-community project involving Wellington’s schools in producing content and sharing stories related to Wellington’s local megafauna. Short films and artworks from the project will be showcased statewide as part of a live-streaming event to be broadcast directly from the Caves Complex to schools around NSW on Thursday, December 7. Australia’s megafauna (“great animals”), now all extinct, included an amazing variety of bizarre creatures including giant wallabies and kangaroos; great wombat-like beasts such as Diprotodon, Zygomaturus, and Palorchestes; and colossal birds and reptiles. Fossilised bones of extinct megafauna, such as the giant kangaroo, marsupial lion, and seven-metre-long carnivorous goanna, have all been discovered in and around the caves. The company running the initiative, Project Zone, was awarded a Heritage and Cultural Award at the 2023 NSW Tidy

Town Award from their partnership program with the Wellington Caves Complex and Dubbo Regional Council (DRC). Partners also include Flinders University, Wellington Public School, Wellington High School, and the local St Mary’s Catholic School. “DRC is proud to partner with organisations such as Project Zone to further better our community,” Mayor Councillor Mathew Dickerson said. “In this case, through the education of our Wellington students on some of the history of their community,” he added. The project provided young people with the opportunity to learn new transferable employability and vocational skills, opening pathways into vocational outcomes in tourism, palaeontology, museums and galleries, and curatorial/research professions. “This recognition stands as a significant testament to the excellence of our collective efforts in highlighting the importance of megafauna in the Wellington region,” Project Zone Creative Director Vince Lovecchio said. “We hope this accolade will pave the way for additional support in advancing its future development,” he added.

NAVIGATING PROPERTY INSPECTIONS

The Real Estate Chat with Karen Chant from Chant and Co

The Property Sales Timeline Selling a property involves a timeline spanning from decision-making to successful transfer. Let’s explore the stages briefly. Property Preparation: Preparing a property for sale takes time, involving repairs, tidying, decluttering, and refreshing. This can range from weeks to months, depending on needs and urgency. Selecting an Agent: Choosing an agent for marketing and selling is crucial. Research and interviews may take a few weeks to find the right fit. Marketing Campaign: After selecting an agent, they craft a marketing campaign with photography, videos, styling, and online distribution. The aim is to generate interest and competition. Sales Campaign: Listing the property triggers open homes and inspections. The initial 14 days are vital for attracting interest, but time to an offer varies based on home type, price, and market. Negotiations and Contracts: Serious buyers lead to negotiations. Offers are received, and you can accept, negotiate, or reject based on your needs. Accepted offers lead to a contract of sale, setting terms and timeframes.

Termite damage can be ugly, but it’s not always seen by the naked eye.

B

efore you’re handed the keys to your new home, there’s one critical step that you can’t afford to skip – the property inspection. In Australia’s competitive real estate market, a thorough inspection can save you from future heartache and unexpected repair bills. Here’s a lowdown on why they’re not just recommended, but essential. 1. Unveiling the Veil: Structural Integrity

A property may present well, but underlying structural issues can lurk unseen. Qualified inspectors can spot potential problems with foundations, roofing, walls, and other structural elements. These are costly to fix and can drastically affect a property’s value. 2. Wiring and Plumbing: The Lifelines of a Home Electrical and plumbing systems are the lifeblood of any property, and faults within these can pose significant safety risks. Inspections ensure wiring is up to code, plumbing is leak-free, and fixtures are in working order. 3. Pests: The Unseen Invaders Termites and other pests can silently compromise the integrity of a home. A pest inspection can save you from investing in a property that’s at risk of or currently suffering from infestations. 4. Asbestos and Other Hazards In older Australian homes, the presence of asbestos and other hazardous materi-

als is a serious concern. A professional inspection can identify these risks, allowing for safe removal and ensuring a healthy living environment. 5. Compliance: Regulations and Permits

Settlement: After accepting an offer, you and the buyer sign a contract with common settlement periods of 30, 42, or 60 days, though this is negotiable. For guidance in buying or selling property and understanding your local market, connect with an agent who cares about people and their stories. You can contact Karen Chant on mobile 0448 191167 or email karen@chantandco.com.au

Property inspections can also verify that previous renovations comply with local council regulations and building codes. Non-compliance can be costly to rectify and may lead to legal complications. A comprehensive inspection offers peace of mind, confirming that your investment is sound. It also provides a strong negotiating tool; uncovering issues may lead to price negotiations or the current owner undertaking necessary repairs before settlement. Property inspections, while an additional cost, are a drop in the ocean compared to the financial burden of unanticipated repairs. They are a crucial part of due diligence when purchasing property in Australia, ensuring that your dream home doesn’t become a nightmare. In essence, a property inspection stands as your first line of defence in the home-buying process – an indispensable step towards a safe and secure investment in your future. The information in this article is general in nature and so readers should seek professional advice specific to their circumstances.

CHOOSE THE PERFECT BLINDS FOR EVERY ROOM IN YOUR HOME C

hoosing the perfect blinds for each room in your home is not only about style but also function-

ality. Blinds can serve various purposes – from enhancing the aesthetic appeal of a room to providing privacy and regulating natural light. Here are some expanded tips and considerations for selecting ideal blinds for different rooms in your home. •••

BEDROOM: The bedroom is a personal sanctuary where comfort is paramount. Blackout blinds are essential for those who need complete darkness to ensure a good night’s sleep. They are also excellent for insulation, keeping the room warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Aluminium Venetian blinds are a practical option that offers durability and control over light and privacy. For a more traditional or soft look, fabric blinds, like honeycomb blinds, can add texture and colour while still providing the option for blackout efficiency.

SUNSET STROLLS TO THE RIVER, TOGETHER.

LIVING ROOM: This space often serves multiple purposes – it’s where you entertain, relax, and sometimes even work. Venetian blinds can offer a classic or modern look with adjustable slats for light control. For a touch of elegance, you might choose Roman blinds which provide a clean-lined look when drawn and decorative soft folds when raised. Vertical blinds can be ideal for large windows or sliding doors, providing precise control over light and privacy with the ability to tilt or slide them aside entirely. BATHROOM: In the bathroom, privacy and resistance to moisture are key. Vinyl blinds are a practical choice as they resist moisture and are easy to clean. Faux wood blinds made from PVC offer the warm look of wood without the risk of warping or cracking. These are perfect for creating a spa-like feel in your bathroom sanctuary. KITCHEN: In the kitchen, you need something that can withstand humidity and is easy to clean. Aluminium

Venetian blinds tick these boxes and come in a range of colours to complement your kitchen décor. If you prefer a softer look, roller blinds in a wipeable fabric can add a pop of colour and are also practical for kitchen messes. When choosing blinds, consider the orientation of the room; south-facing rooms might need thicker, UVresistant materials to protect furniture from sun damage, whereas north-facing rooms might benefit from lighter, sheer materials. Remember that the blinds’ functionality is as crucial as their aesthetics. Cordless blinds are a safer option for homes with children and pets, while motorised blinds can add a level of convenience to any room. Ultimately, the choice of blinds should reflect your personal style, needs, and the specific requirements of each space. Don’t hesitate to ask for swatches to test them in your home’s lighting. A visit to a local specialist shop such as Kooltrend can provide tailored advice, and many shops will offer a home consultation service to help you make the best decision for your space.

ne of the best-selling computer games for Christmas at EB Games/ZiNG Dubbo is about a curious little pup with a heart-of-gold. The surprise hit Australian kids’ television animation series, Bluey, has recently been developed into a tots computer game, and it’s selling like hot cakes, Store Manager, Melissa Sinclair, revealed. “Bluey has been one of our most highly-anticipated recent games, it was only released last week” she enthused. “It’s just been walking off the shelves, we’re almost all soldout,” she added. Other big movers for late 2023 include Spiderman II and something very much at the

other end of the gaming spectrum, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, with Melissa a keen gamer herself. “We’re definitely well within the hundreds of games in stock, if it’s out there, chances are we have it, or can get it,” she said. “I am currently playing PC and PlayStation 5, the new Baldur’s Gate 3 and Mortal Kombat 1” She said that the store, which is located at Shop T028 in the Orana Mall, had also been fielding plenty of inquiries about retro computer games that have made a comeback in recent times. “A lot of the older games that people played as a child, are now making a comeback,

people are rediscovering their enjoyment of them. “These include the Mario games, Super Mario, Mario PG, and Nintendo, a lot of these have just been re-released,” she added. With gaming now reportedly more popular than sports watching for many Australians, Melissa adds that you don’t need to be an enthusiast to get involved. “Not at all, if you’ve never played, just drop in, we’re happy to help people find a game they enjoy for any level they are at. “We’ve got so many games for kids from four to five, to adults, for people aged up to 99, there’s something that can interest anyone,” she concluded.

Dubbo Parkrun’s recent “Kid’s Take Over Week”, allowed exactly that! Parkrun, a weekly event that is usually managed by groups of adult volunteers, held a special Kids Take Over weekend on Saturday, November 11, with children taking-over the roster to run the event. Run Director, Molly (only 13) confidently gave the pre-run briefing to the group of almost 300 park-runners and also coordinated the day’s event. “I was a little nervous, but it wasn’t too bad,” Molly said. “It is good practice to speak in front of a group of people”, she added.

The Kids Take Over week provides an opportunity for younger park-runners to develop leadership skills and promotes community involvement, with children as young as four helping to make the day’s event a success. Park-run is a free event held every Saturday at 8am. New runners and volunteers, including kids, are always welcome! For more information, go to:  www.parkrun.com.au/dubbo/

Memorable Remembrance Day for Clive Rootes Legacy Cup By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL IN a hotly-contested event at the RSL Health and Fitness Centre during the week, there was a changing of the guard, as young swimmers stroked their way to a win in the renamed Clive Rootes Relay. This year, 32 teams competed in a spirit of friendship for the new Legacy Cup. An opening ceremony involved 12-year-old Hayden Doherty (from St Laurence’s Primary) touching the hearts of a large group of competitors, friends, and family, who had gathered in silence around the pool. His sounding of the Last Post and Rouse (Reveille), while ex-serviceman Bill Greenwood escorted a Remembrance Wreath to the centre of the pool, was a poignant moment in the event raising funds in the centenary year of Legacy. After the last note sounded, it was all action as teams of four dived in for the 4x25 metres; four frantic laps with closest to the nominated time as the objective. The winners were all young, fit athletes who out-pointed an eclectic group of would'a'beens, has-beens, and never-wasses, all splashing up-and-down for a great cause. Organiser, Peter Hargreaves, says it was an

incredible community event. “Next year, we’re putting out the challenge to all sporting, community, social, and workplace teams, to join-in the fun and make a much-needed contribution to our service men and women and their families.” Peter says more than $1000 was donated to local Legacy, represented at the event by Ivor Trapman and Phil Priest.

BARRY’S DEVILS HOLLOW PHANTOM CALL PROVIDES FIGHTING CUP WINNER

By GEOFF MANN

THE Melbourne Cup Phantom Call, provided by former bookmaker and race-caller, Barry Brebner, at the recent Devils Hollow Social Club and Rotary Charity Night, gave those in attendance the Melbourne Cup winner, Without a Fight. Whilst the call failed to provide the place-getters, quite a number of those in attendance, took the tip. The night itself raised $500.00 for both the Rotary Club of Dubbo, and the local Field and Game Club, with the funds presented to Rotary

Club President Chris Scales and Field and Game Representative Glen Bloink. This Melbourne Cup Calcutta Night started many years ago at the Dubbo City Bowling Club, where the Rotary Club of Dubbo and the Dubbo Travelling Bowlers Club, joined forces to raise funds. Over recent years, the event has been held at the Devils Hollow Brewery. The Calcutta Sweep conducted on the night, provided nearly $10,000 to those who purchased the three placegetters, Without a Fight, Soulcombe, and Sheraz. Barry Brebner

Bec and Aaron, top dirt-bikers, honoured at Statewide awards By BEL HENDERSON

Aaron Rankmore. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

TWO top awards were recently announced for the hard-working crew at Dubbo Dirt Bike Club. This included President, Bec Eade, recently recognised by Motorcycle NSW being named as Chairperson of the Year, and Aaron Rankmore as, Coach of the Year. Bec has done a brilliant job with the club in recent years, overseeing track renovations during the calamitous COVID years, and was humbled to receive the prestigious trophy against four finalists. Aaron could not accept his award in person, however, as he is overseas with Australian racer, Danielle McDonald, who

is competing in the ISDE International Six Days Enduro in Argentina. Stella Harding (Junior Female Rider of the Year) and Oli Chandler (Junior Male Rider) were also in the finals selection, a great feat for the talented duo. The Community Awards are a vital component of the Motorcycling NSW Awards event, celebrating the unsung heroes and champions who have gone above and beyond to support, promote, and enrich, the experience of motorcycling. It is a huge pat on the back for our remarkable individuals and the Dirt Bike Club that has demonstrated exemplary dedication to the sport and have made such a positive impact on Bec Eade. Ho, Ho, Ho, early Christmas mode, for the happy Sundee bowling crowd Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ A TOTAL of 42 jovial bowlers were in “early Christmas mode” as they rolled-up at Northies last Sunday. In an early game, Chris Castlehouse and Gaye Cottee combined with Anthony Coe, to get the early points over Gary Huggins and Pete Bennison and their skip, Graham Ross. They won five of the first eight but, with only singles, trailed by one. They fell further behind when Graham’s team bagged a triple on the ninth. However they gained their composure and picked-up a couple of doubles and a three of their own to draw level with two to play. Gary, Pete and Graham then snagged a triple on 14, and

held-on to take the game 14-12 Ron McCauley, Ian Humphries, along with Gordon Scott, combined well against Sue Armstrong, Eric Satchell, and skip, Kevin Scott, to lead by one at the turnaround. Sue, Eric, and skip, Kevin, clawed it back by the 10th, before Gordon and co potted a four on the next to regain the lead. In an intense final few ends, Ron, Ian, and Gordon, managed a triple on the 14th, taking a four-shot lead, which was not breached. Final score, 15-12. A strong first-half gave Paul Martin, Julie Brown, and John Cole, an eight-shot lead over John Kennedy, Karen Greenhalge, and Roy Frost. They were never headed on the way to a 14-8 win.

It was even-stevens at four ends each, but Sue O’Dea, Ruby Stockings, and Paul Goodstat, led by two over Ros Joseph, Greg Brown, and Peter Sinclair. Despite their best efforts and a quad on the 13th, it was not enough. Sue, Ruby, and Paul clinching it 17-11. Despite winning only four ends in total, Doc Livingston, John McKenzie, and Pete Ruzans, racked-up 13 shots. Alas, it was not enough, as Helene Emblen, Steve Kelly, and Phil Knight rolled-on to third place with their 22-13 victory. Chris Strojny, Frank Armstrong, and Brian Jones, were pointless after four ends, but evened the score against Di Hildebrant, Shirley Marchant, and Kailum

Jones, at the halfway mark. That was as good as it got for new skip, Kailum and co. Chris’s team exploded with a couple of fives and a six, for an emphatic final score of 24-10 to earn second place for the morning. Mary Perry, Therese Gaio, and Tod O’Dea also played against Leo Balstad, Allan Stratford, and Al Andriske. Al was looking for a win after a dismal few recent losses; Tod, came down with a thud after taking first place the previous. Leo, Allan, and Al rocketed to an 11-2 lead and pounded another 15 to their card. Mary, Therese, and Tod, were dominated 26-5. Leo, Allan, and Al were, deservedly, the winners of the morning.

Dubbo Physie parents, coaches: “Who were those little people?”

Lexi and Em were two cute little fairies amongst the many participants who graced the floor at the recent Physical Culture tournament. PHOTO: SUPPLIED/FILE

THERE was a touching follow-up to last week’s story on the Dubbo Physical Culture team. Jen Hunt emailed Photo News, to say how thrilled the youngsters – and their parents and grandparents – were with our coverage. “Orrrrh, they had a ball. It’s truly rewarding to see the difference from when they started in February, to now,” one emailer said “Even the difference from the Monday practice to that performance on the Sunday,” they added. “Who were those little people?” Jackie Pratten said to one parent when they came off the floor, “Of course, I cried… so, so, proud of them xx. Very special” another said.

“TOOTHY TENS” RUGBY TOURNEY IN MEMORY OF A FINE YOUNG FOOTBALLER By GEOFF MANN TWO weeks ago, nearly 30 men’s and women’s rugby union teams converged on Endeavour Oval, Orange for the Toothy Tens tournament. The event was organised by Alex Tooth, the sister of 19-yearold Nick who died as a result of a head injury during a tournament at Quirindi nine years ago. The event has been held each

year since, run in conjunction with NSW and Rugby Australia, to raise awareness and funds for head and neck injuries and to remember a vibrant young man taken too young. Central West Blue Bulls Club captain Tim Beach, who plays with Dubbo Roos, organised a team of CW representative players. They had a special jersey made in memory of a former Bulls teammate, The Roos contingent (above) at the Toothy Tens tournament, Nathaniel Langilangi, who passed and (right) Filisone Pauta, Jake Styles, Tim Beach and Ratu Roco. away earlier this year. L L U B A SNAPANOTHER

MOMENT BY MEL

BY GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL OVER his long and colourful career, our photographer Mel Pocknall has pulled on footy boots, strapped on cricket and hockey pads, slid into go-karts, partaken of a wide range of motor vehicles and bikes. He’s also cycled, swam, and ran and even mounted a galloper and sat in a harness racing gig, to capture the best possible shots.

He has swung a golf club and tapped croquet balls with his mallet, been show-jumping, chased greyhounds and swum, cycled, and ran with triathletes. Last weekend, he headed to Geurie for the much-anticipated Bucking Bulls Australia Classic.

Dubbo Photo News takes no responsibility for his antics but we love his work. These brilliant snaps capture a fabulous day’s action.
