Winton’s call-up for Australian Ballet's national youth program Y

Decorate and vote on your favourite Christmas tree to help Dubbo’s needy

By DAVID DIXON

oung local dancer Winton Chua fulfils the dream of a lifetime next year: being chosen to train with the Australian Ballet. His selection entails he, and other young prodigies from around Australia, taking part in intensive workshops at the Australian Ballet School’s interstate training program in Melbourne. The recent honour is a tribute to Winton’s determination, as he has no family background in the artistic form and was no natural athlete as an infant, his mum Raya explained. “When Winton was little, he was sick. He wanted to do what other people could do, and he would see movies, and say, ‘I want to do that!’,” Raya said. “Then he saw a kids’ film called Ballerina, and he loved it, and asked, ‘Can I train to do that?’,” she added. The demanding physical nature of the dance form proved exactly what he needed, Mum explained. “When he was small, he wasn’t even able to even sit on a swing when he started school. When we thought about it, we decided that, as well as the enjoyment, this would help make him stronger.” This is where local academy, the Orana Dance Centre, came into the picture. “I was about six, when I watched the (animated) movie, and I asked if I could do ballet, but it was something that Mum couldn’t teach me,” Winton said. “So, I started doing lessons, and found I really enjoyed it. I work quite hard, I do about 10.5 hours a week, I do school at home, so I go often,” he added. Raya said that Winton can’t wait to head off for the training program in the southern capital. “It starts next year, and the dancers come from all over the country, and do an intensive week in Melbourne. There’s only eight children per unit chosen to attend, so it’s quite an honour,” Mum added. Without putting all his eggs in one basket, Winton said he’d love to pursue dance as career at some stage and, on a previous trip to Melbourne, actually performed in a production of Don Quixote. “I think it’s something that I’d like to do as I grow older; I think succeeding at it is a combination of talent and training. For ballet I don’t really have a favourite, I like all of them,” he concluded.

Local business houses, churches, schools, sporting groups, families, and individuals, are all being invited to take part in Dubbo's famous Christmas Tree Competition with the theme: 'Building Community Spirit'. PHOTO: DUBBO REGION

DECORATING your Christmas tree in the festive season is one of those wonderful family events where we all get together and give thanks for another year. But how good would it be to help decorate a tree for a very good cause? Business houses, churches, schools, sporting groups, families, and individuals are all being invited to take part in in a friendly Christmas tree decorating competition. Dubbo’s famous Christmas tree competition is on again, with the theme this year of ‘Building Community Spirit’. Following the decoration, locals can donate a gold coin to vote for the best tree in the competition, with all proceeds going towards a local Uniting Church programme to provide food parcels for the needy. Hosted this year in the Wesley Community Centre at 64–66 Church Street, now is the time to get your team together from your work or organisation, school, or church and get creative with a decoration plan and theme. Putting your tree together in the hall starts on Friday, December 8, with festive music from the Macquarie Conservatorium. You can vote as many times as you like. Voting finishes on the afternoon of Saturday, December 9, with the winner announced. So bring your colleagues, friends, and family along on the Friday and Saturday for some friendly competition, festive fun, and music. See the advertisement in this week’s Dubbo Photo News, for full details. To register, or for more information, phone 6885 4200 by Monday, December 4.

Bracken House welcomes new therapy ‘assistant’ T

By SHARON BONTHUYS

he residents of Bracken House in Dubbo have welcomed with open arms the facility’s newest and youngest staff member, Tidda the corgi. Over the next two years, threemonth-old Tidda will be trained as a therapy animal to support the aged care residents by helping to reduce loneliness, increase happiness, and to improve mood. She will also be a gentle reminder of the homes, pets and lifestyles the residents have left. “Ninety-nine per cent of country folk have been raised with animals and miss them when they enter care,” said Regional Manager Elaine Baillie. “As soon as people see [Tidda], they smile. In her first week here, she initiated conversations among the residents about the pets they’d had to leave,” said Facility Manager Jodie Nelson, Tidda began accompanying Ms Nelson to work at Bracken House at just a few weeks of age and quickly settled into a “work” routine spending time with many of the residents and staff. Corgis were originally bred to be herding dogs and are by nature rather energetic and playful. The residents love watching Tidda race about the common areas and engage in play with them. She is often picked up and carried, although this is likely to cease as she grows and gets heavier. She also enjoys sleeping, Ms Nelson said. Visiting and playing with residents is hard work! Tidda is a Pembroke Welsh corgi, the

same breed favoured and made famous by British royalty. The late Queen Elizabeth II reportedly owned about 30 corgis during her 70-year reign. “Her name is a Wiradjuri word meaning ‘sister’,” Ms Nelson said. It’s also a subtle nod to the residents, as women make up a large per centage of those residing at the 74bed facility. Robyn Roberts is one of Tidda’s biggest fans: “I couldn’t bring my dog here. I had to leave him with my son,” she said, giving Tidda a cuddle. Norah Prinner also loves little Tidda: “She cheers us all up.” Tidda isn’t the first therapy pet to cheer up the Bracken House residents. “We have had therapy pets here before. Troppo was a kelpie who left us when his owner, a staff member, left about three years ago. We’ve also had a couple of cats,” Ms Nelson said. One cat was relocated not long ago due to a resident’s allergy. Ms Nelson said the residents voted to get a new therapy animal at a meeting, and contact with Tidda is voluntary. “People can choose not to have contact with the dog. A few have said no. Tidda will work it out,” Ms Nelson said. Over the next two years, Tidda will undergo rigorous instruction including obedience training. Dubbo Photo News will check back with Bracken House and see how she’s doing down the track. Well done, Tidda!

FROM ANCIENT FIRES TO SHOOTING STARS The history of modern Chrissie lights

Most of us love the tradition of driving around at dusk and spotting the best-decorated and lit-up Christmas decorations in Dubbo; and now's the time to do it!. IMAGE: DUBBO REGIONAL COUNCIL

M

ost of us love the tradition of driving around at dusk and spotting the best-decorated and lit-up Christmas decorations in Dubbo. But where did the tradition of Christmas lights inside and outside our homes in the Festive Season come from? While brightly-coloured Christmas lights might look a little incongruous in the golden west mid-summer, the custom is well-founded for the middle of winter in the northern hemisphere. The practice of adding cheerful lights to dark winter nights began in ancient times when people gathered around fires or decorated their homes with candles. Before electric Christmas lights, families would use candles to light up their Christmas trees. This practice was often dangerous and led to many house fires.

This continued to modern industrial society, with candles lit in windows a common sight in many homes at Yuletide up to the early 20th century; which is also the reason that so many Christmas lights still represent a lit candle. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, created the very first strand of electric lights. During the Christmas season of 1880, these strands were strung around the outside of his Menlo Park Laboratory. Railroad passengers traveling by the laboratory got their first look at an electrical light display. But it would take almost 40 years for electric Christmas lights to become the tradition that we all know and love. Edison’s colleague, Edward H Johnson, went one further, putting the very first string of electric Christmas tree

lights together in 1882. Johnson did this by hand-wiring 80 red, white, and blue light bulbs and wound them around his Christmas tree. Not only was the tree illuminated with electricity, it also revolved. The strand was made up of 80 red and blue lights, which were powered by a generator. Costing over $400 in modern terms, early electric holiday lights weren’t affordable for most people, but they were far safer than the fire risk posed by attaching lit candles to an evergreen tree. In 1903, the American Eveready Company sold the first “pre-wired, socket-ready” strings of holiday lights; blinking lights followed about 20-years later. By 1965 sound effects had been developed. The evolution of shunts allowing the current to by-pass a burnt out bulb while

keeping the rest of the strand lit was a welcome advancement for anyone who had faced the frustration of having the entire strand go dark when a single incandescent bulb burnt out. In the late 1990s, LED lights offered a durable energy-efficient improvement. According to the US Department of Energy, it costs only $0.27 to light a two-metre tree for 12 hours a day for 40 days with LED bulbs, compared to $10 for incandescent globes. Computer-controlled RGB lights are the latest advancement, allowing for animation and music as elaborate as any holiday light designer can dream up! However, nothing that computer-generated virtual Christmas lights can offer, can beat the wonderful look of an old-fashioned display of Christmas lights around the family home.

Local photographer Arthur French

hit on the interest of families being able to take a memory of Christmas home in a photo in 1943. The concept took off, with French charging a dollar a snap… earning a year’s salary in a few weeks of children telling Santa their Christmas wishes. El Nino surprise: Flood watch is issued for Macquarie River

Recent rainfall and further predicted downpours this week, have resulted in a “flood watch” being issued on Monday for parts of the Central West, including the Macquarie River. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS

WITH the region declared drought-affected only weeks ago in the midst of a newly-announced El Nino (dry weather) event, flood warnings are the last thing we might have expected locally. However, recent rainfall and further predicted downpours this week, have resulted in a “flood watch” being issued on Monday for parts of the Central West, including the Macquarie River. On Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) advised minor flooding

could be possible along the Macquarie River starting from today (Wednesday, November 29). “A broad trough is expected to bring widespread rainfall across NSW, with severe thunderstorms and locally heavy falls for the next few days,” the The Bureau said. “This rainfall may cause flooding along rivers in parts of the New South Wales South Coast Rivers, Inland Central West Rivers and South West Rivers,” they added.

The weather system is expected to cause flooding for a number of catchments around NSW from Wednesday, including warnings for “minor flooding” for the Macquarie, Castlereagh, and Bogan Rivers. BOM issues “Flood Watch” warnings so as to advise people living or working along rivers and streams, to monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.

Employee training a big plus for Mel By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY

COONAMBLE-BORN Mel Wright started with Fletcher International Exports just six months ago as a training administrator, but said her welcome there has been so good, it’s like she’s been clocking on for 10 years. “From day dot everyone has been so welcoming, anyone will give you a hand with anything, it’s such a good crew, and I’ve recently been through something very personal, and they have been so supportive of the time I needed during that period, they’re just great,” Mel told Dubbo Photo News. “I enjoy coming in every day, and I put my hand up to help, for example, we have a couple of days toward the end of the year where we add extra days on the end of our week for people who don’t have leave, to have extra time over Christmas. “It’s a workplace that makes you want to go and ask to do more; it makes you want to be involved in

everything that’s going on here,” Mel said. A big drawcard for Mel to work for Fletcher International was the fact the company invests heavily in the training and skill development of its workforce, putting its philosophy into action by supporting employee development throughout their career. Bell River stabilisation ‘FOAM MUNCHER’ TRIAL AT WELLO: project starts WORKS have started on the stabilisation of the southern bank of the Bell River, adjacent to Pioneer Park in Wellington, that was severely eroded as a result of repeated flood events in 2022. Stabilisation works will involve rock armouring of the southern bank to prevent further erosion and to protect the Pioneer Park sporting precinct. Works will start from the bottom of the existing weir and extend approximately 60 metres along the riverbank. Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) has engaged Soil Conservation Services to undertake the works. “The contractor will be establishing the work site from this week with fencing installed along the northern boundary of the fields and around the worksite to protect public safety,” DRC Recreation and Open Spaces Manager Ian McAlister said. “Following the completion of the stabilisation project approximately 500 endemic plants comprising of trees, shrubs and grasses will be planted to assist with improving the biodiversity in the area and support the stabilisation works being undertaken. “Access and usage of Pioneer Park for sporting groups will not be impacted whilst works are underway. Minor disruption to walkers will result along the old internal road as this is required as part of the secure work site. Walkers are requested to avoid the area. “The works are not expected to disrupt the population of platypus in the Bell River that tend to inhabit the weir pool above the work site, however, monitoring will be undertaken during the course of the works,” Mr McAlister said. The Bell River Stabilisation Project will cost $300,000 and is funded through the NSW Government Disaster Risk Reduction Fund. The Pioneer Park restoration project is being undertaken in stages. The internal road renewal was completed in early 2023 and following the stabilisation project the next step will be the renewal of the internal path system. This will involve reconstructing the pathway on a similar alignment but using concrete to make it more flood resilient. This work is likely to start in early 2024. The final stage will involve the renewal of the irrigation system for Pioneer Park and the restoration of the western carpark. These works are scheduled to commence after the winter sporting season. Council has also applied to the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements for funding to reinstate the Duke of Wellington Bridge. Stabilisation works are expected to take approximately four weeks weather permitting.

Drop off your old plastic waste

New transfer stations around Wellington and the villages will allow ratepayers to drop off their polystyrene waste in the 'Foam Muncher' bin at the sites for recycling. PHOTO: DRC

PLASTIC dinnerware, travel coffee mugs, serving dishes, and packing material have, for decades, been an important part of our convenient, low-cost consumer society. Polystyrene is, however, one of most dangerous modern creations: largely imperishable and taking more than 500 years to decompose, all the while leaching harmful chemicals into the environment. This problematic chemical compound is now the focus of a pilot recycling initiative in Wellington aiming to remove as much of it as possible from the local environment. The Polystyrene Recycling Trial started recently at Wellington Waste Facility with transfer stations also located in local villages allowing ratepayers to drop off their polystyrene waste in ‘Foam Muncher’ bins at each sites. The polystyrene must be clean and free of any tape or other materials.

The polystyrene collected will then be transferred to the Whylandra Waste and Recycling Station where a Foam Muncher vehicle comes onsite and melts the polystyrene into blocks. These blocks are then transported to manufacturers to turn into a variety of new products, such as skirting boards, flooring, picture frames and railway sleepers. The Polystyrene Recycling Program is now a permanent fixture at Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre in Dubbo after a successful trial earlier this year. “We were really happy with the results from the trial at the Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre which is now continuing the recycling program,” Resource Recovery and Efficiency Manager for Dubbo Council Jamie Lobb said. “We are excited to be able to further expand the trial to both Wellington and the village transfer stations and increase the opportunity to recycle this material,”

he added. Under the 2040 Community Strategic Plan, council is committed to reducing our environmental footprint and impact on the environment through waste management processes. Polystyrene is a type of plastic made from oil, which is a non-renewable resource. Despite 98 per cent of the plastic packaging being air, polystyrene takes up large amounts of space in landfills where it can easily be blown away and enter and harm our natural environment. More than 71,000 tonnes of polystyrene is produced and used each year in Australia, with 85 per cent of the product going to landfills. The Polystyrene Recycling Trial will operate for three months and then will be assessed to determine potential for continuation at Wellington and the transfer stations.

New residents receive a warm welcome to ‘the friendly west’

Thumbs up to Big W at the Mall. I had a very enjoyable and pleasant time shopping there this morning. The music in the store was playing softly. This encouraged me to linger over my purchases and look around. I thanked the checkout operator as I was leaving for providing such a peaceful place to shop. I will certainly be back. Thumbs up to Elwin from Paint Perfection for the excellent work he did on my car recently. Thumbs up to the family whose son’s car slid across my front yard early in the morning and came back with their son to apologise and remediate my lawn. Very close call. To everyone, please drive extra carefully at this time of year, especially in residential areas. Thumbs up and a special thankyou to the three young staff at Chemist Warehouse who went above and beyond to assemble a Wagner Rollator Walker for an older lady on Tuesday morning. Thumbs up and thank-you to the Year 6 boys and their teacher from Wellington Public School. They helped me unload my bags of cans. I was very impressed with their manners and helpfulness. Thumbs up to Lorraine Scoble for receiving Life Membership to CPSA Dubbo/Orana Branch. Well done, Lorraine! Thumbs up to Alex of Allo’s Pest control and Handyman for cleaning my house guttering of many years accumulation of dust and debris. Alex is a courteous and caring tradesperson. Thumbs up to Natalie at Insurance Services Pty Ltd for being exceptionally prompt and professional, with expert service and attention assisting with our recent home invasion and car theft claims. Awesome. Thumbs up to the Dubbo Police. For all your hard work – two young offenders now in custody. Stolen cars retrieved quickly. Welcome to the friendly west; State Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders; Dubbo Councillor Josh Black; and Mayor Councillor Mathew Dickerson recently welcomed new recent arrivals to the region in the last ‘New Resident Night’ for 2023. PHOTO: DRC

The don’t call it ‘the friendly west’ for nothing! New residents to the Dubbo Region recently enjoyed an evening of games, snags, and the opportunity to speak with community and interest groups at Dubbo Council’s last ‘New Resident Night’ for 2023. Welcoming more than 60 movers to the region, the event was held at the Dubbo Visitor Information Centre with representatives from community groups, sporting clubs, and businesses in attendance, encouraging them to be part of our community. Mayor Councillor Mathew Dickerson was thrilled to welcome the

recent arrivals to the region and oversaw some of the entertaining games on the night. “Everyone joined in the fun; it’s always great to see new faces, hear their stories, and learn about their reasons for moving to the Dubbo Region,” Cr Dickerson said. “Macquarie Rotary’s barbecue was a huge hit, and it was fantastic to see so many local businesses and community organisations at the event to connect with our new residents and provide information about their services,” he added. Other VIPs in attendance included State Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders; local top

cop Inspector Russell McArthur; Dubbo’s Deputy Mayor Cr Richard Ivey; and Councillors Jessica Gough, Shibli Chowdhury, Matt Wright, Josh Black, and Pam Wells. Council’s Economic Development and Visitor Services Team Leader Tim Nichols said he was pleased to see the community come together to provide a warm and friendly atmosphere to welcome the new residents. “It can be hard to meet people and make friends when you relocate; to see so many newcomers chatting to each other, being welcomed and made to feel at home in our region was heartening,” Mr

Nichols said. “DRC staff run these events several times a year to assist new residents in making the transition to their new home a little easier; by having community groups and services all together it is a great opportunity for new residents, and we hope it makes their move a little easier.” Council will hold their next new resident’s event early in 2024. If you have recently moved or know someone who has, make sure to collect a copy of the New Resident Guide from the Dubbo or Wellington Visitor Information Centres or view it online at: dubbo.com.au/live

CHAUFFER RIDE FOR DELTA SHORES’ FIRSTEVER RESIDENT – BILL G

ated communities are a type of collective housing development that offer security, a sense of community, and shared amenities, for its lucky estate residents.

New gated Dubbo development Delta Shores last week hit an important milestone, welcoming its first-ever resident, Bill Greenwood. To mark the occasion, Mr Greenwood was chauffeured to his new address – situated off Delta Road, Dubbo – where he was presented with the keys to his new home in a small ceremony with friends in attendance. “We are delighted to welcome Bill as the first resident of Delta Shores,”

Maas Residential General Manager John Grey said. “Having Bill move in today marks the beginning of a vibrant and thriving community within the gated estate,” he added. Several other new residents are scheduled to move in to Delta Shores over the next few weeks. “I love the views Delta Shores has over the Southlakes creek system, and chose Southlakes, due to the parklands and walking tracks,” Mr Greenwood said. The gated community will also feature a state-of-the-art shared pool and clubhouse, providing residents with

a vibrant and interconnected community, within the broader allure of Southlakes Estate. Delta Shores, like other Maas gated estates, is designed to cater to residents seeking a low-maintenance, easy living option. While welcoming residents of all ages and life-stages, these estates particularly appeal to those seeking to downsize. The allure lies in the high level of amenity and the sense of community that is fostered within gated estates. The absence of entry or exit fees and the ability to still own the land on which their house is built also provides

residents with flexibility. “The gated estate product has proved very popular in Dubbo,” Mr Gray said. “With construction of the Delta Shores pool and clubhouse facilities to be completed in early 2024, and a thriving community already starting to take shape, this is an excellent opportunity to secure a new home,” he enthused. “We look forward to seeing more residents join Bill over the coming weeks and months and to seeing the community really grow and thrive,” Mr Gray concluded.

A PROPERTY LAUNCH WITH A DIFFERENCE By LANA EATHER

C

olin Hewett Real Estate delivered a sensational property launch for 3 Harrison Place, Dubbo. In a quiet cul-desac in the Kintyre area this four bedrooms plus granny flat property has certainly impressed viewers. Colin Hewett shared “this property is a gorgeous estate, and we wanted to create a unique start to its sale launch. We have Burger Babe and Duncan Ferguson Music to provide great food and entertainment while prospective clients can

browse this outstanding property on its first Open Home. Unfortunately, the rainy weather prevented SWF racing sprint cars and drivers joining us, but we are still assured of a great night! The property has been fully styled by Simone Julius and looks fantastic!” Thinking outside the box for the Property Launch definitely showcased the beautiful features of this home!

ARIES: With your boss on a well-earned holiday, you have the chance to step up and take their position. This opportunity will have a positive impact on your career. In romance, love cannot grow in the absence of affection. TAURUS: You may catch people’s attention this week. You could even offer a listening ear to someone who needs it. Your generosity will be rewarded with gratitude. GEMINI: You’ll spend lavishly on gifts for those close to you. This generosity will give you great satisfaction. However, a family project will require deep thought. CANCER: It’s important to take time for yourself when faced with professional demands. Don’t deprive yourself of moments of relaxation and pleasure with your nearest and dearest. Accept their invitations and take part in interesting activities. LEO: There’s a good chance you’ll obtain a large sum of money and be able to treat yourself. Whether you want to buy a property or start a business, or do something smaller but significant, you’ll finally get the go-ahead to finance the project. VIRGO: You’ll start sending out invitations to various festive events. The positive responses you receive will come as a pleasant surprise. If you’re an artist, you’ll find the necessary inspiration to create something special and unique. LIBRA: Your artistic potential will awaken within you. Write down your ideas so you don’t forget them and can one day turn them into reality. Otherwise, they could fade into nothingness forever. SCORPIO: You’ll receive numerous invitations to go out, which you’ll gladly accept, even if it may sometimes seem exhausting. However, you must rest at some point to recuperate. SAGITTARIUS: If you want to celebrate Christmas in a special way this year, you must prepare. You don’t have a lot of time, but you’ll create something that lives up to your expectations. When it comes to love, it’s the little things that make a lasting impression. CAPRICORN: It’s time to leave your comfort zone and embark on new adventures. The New Year will allow you to discover new perspectives. You’ll start a training course that will give you better opportunities. AQUARIUS: A special person or situation will touch or move you. Changes you make at work will prove to be beneficial. If you’re single, love may surprise you when you least expect it. PISCES: You’ll be easy to work with this week. You’re not afraid of tackling office tasks and taking the lead in organising future events. Nevertheless, family conflicts could upset you.

Tough Tyran goes to the mat in Pro-Wrestling title victory

OVER the past few weeks, we’ve brought stories of the fundraising efforts of two local sportspeople – Mia Richardson and Molly Croft. While Mia donated her hair for cancer patients and to raise awareness of the effects of Osteosarcoma ( a type of bone cancer), Molly continued her quest to help find a solution to this insidious disease. Molly has been undergoing treatment for five years and continues to get the all-clear, as her friend Mia jumped on board to support her efforts. The St John’s students joined local and international netballers and an elite group of athletes including AFL, rugby union, and league stars, as well as football players and basketballers, to raise funds through tie-dyeing thousands of items at the Randwick Netball Complex recently. “It was amazing to see how this project has grown, since my family and I started doing it six years ago after our Mum died,” Australian Diamond, Amy Parmenter, said. “We got-together at first, to remember Mum, and raise some cash for those doctors and scientists looking for answers but, since those humble beginnings, we have donated over

THEY’RE rough, they’re tough, and they play for keeps. In great news for the local sport, local Dubbo lad, Tyran Tuckey, is the New Soul Pro-Wrestling Australian Champion (PWA)! $800,000 to Osteosarcoma research,” Amy added. The Diamond netballer and her family, friends, and fellow sportspeople, all agree the growth in knowledge and generosity of people is all due to one person – Molly! “Since I met Molly at Westmead Hospital when she was having her first treatments all those years ago, the energy has grown,” Amy said. The determination to help others and the desire she has to help those in similar circumstances gain better outcomes, is infectious; Molly’s philosophy abounds through her tireless efforts to find a rainbow in every moment, every situation, no matter how trying this might be.” Last year, the Tie Dye on Tour, came to Wongarbon and Dubbo. “We raised over $480,000 from sales, donations and corporate sponsorships and over a 24 hour period when we were laughing, tieing, and using the dye – as well as rolling around laughing – we added another $40,000,” Molly smiled. “We haven’t set a target, but a million in a bucket at the end of a rainbow, will keep us and the hundreds of osteosarcoma patients, doctors and other medical staff smiling,” the effervescent Molly added.

A TOTAL of 39 bowlers rockedup to roll-on at the penultimate Sunday of the social bowls year, defying the threat of rain to record some terrific results. Chris Castlehouse and Glenis Hanagan had Greg Brown as their skip, and they made the most of it, winning five of the first eight ends against Ron McCauley, Helene Emblen, and Karen Greenhalge. A five on the fourth, kept the latter in touch. Something went wrong for Greg’s team in the second half, however, adding only three shots to the other team’s nine, and going down 11-16. In a rare occurrence, the Sundee Swinger began one game, but ended up elsewhere! Rob Pfeiffer and Gordon Scott met Shirley Marchant and Trish Gosper, with the swinger to start but transformed into a pairs. Five-all after eight; and six-apiece after 10, before

Shirley and Trish knuckled under, chalking-up another 10 to Rob and Gordon’s four to take the game, 16-10, eight ends each. Doc Livingston and Ross Pharo were in full control with Pete Sinclair, mastering the first eight ends with 13 on their card. Sue Armstrong, Chris Strojny, and Ian Humphries, were left reeling from their opponents five on the second end, but gathered eight shots of their own. Doc, Ross, and Pete kept their lead with a couple of “double-twos” and a final count of 23 for a significant win. Ros Joseph, Pete Bennison, and Bryan O’Sullivan, led Paul Martin, Ray Strawhan, and Al Andriske, by two at the break and outpointed their opponents to win 21-17. Good lead bowling by Julie Brown, then allowed Vicki Hummel to help skip, Kevin Scott turn the corner at six,

all with Therese Gaio and Pete Ruzans. Vicki and Kevin recorded a five count on nine, to begin their second period and kept the momentum going – a 16-10 final score. Second place for the morning, was awarded to Di Hildebrant, Ruby Stockings, and Mick Strawhan. Ruby had one of those days giving Mary Perry, Steve Kelly, and Tod O’Dea a lot to think about. They converted a half-time lead into a 21-10 win. There was no way Leo Balstad, Allan Stratford, or Paul Goodstat, were going to let Daphne Dunbar, Frank Armstrong, or Mel Giddings, stop them from having control of the game. They led all the way and rubbed salt into the wounds with a match-sealing five count, a 22-8 victory and best team of the day award. This Sunday is the final Combo for the year so book-in early, and roll-up strong!

Tireless John is our Tony McGrane Awardee By GEOFF MANN PHYSIOTHERAPIST John Robins has made Dubbo his home for the past 30 years, and his contribution to the golden west, has been remarkable. Being a physiotherapist and exercise physiologist, John has developed a thriving private practice in town, treating thousands of regional patients. Over his journey, he has developed a reputation as a kind and generous person, opening his heart and home to the community. John’s passion for “getting the Dubbo community moving” – naming his business “Activate” – is evident through his involvement in the Dubbo Parkrun, a weekly 5km event. His other activities include with the Dubbo Stampede Running Festival, the Dubbo Tracksesh weekly running training sessions, and being a mentor for the Dubbo Senior College Talented Athlete Programme. The Tony McGrane Award recognises a person who often goes

above and beyond his business, dedicating many hours to helping others. John has inspired and encouraged sedentary people to get moving and is a “pioneer” of long-distance running across the region. He helped start the Dubbo Run Club, a Friday night informal group, and was part of the inaugural committee for the Dubbo Stampede in 2012, a commitment he maintained for six years. He continues to write free training programs for Stampede participants, encouraging walkers, joggers, and runners, to help achieve their goals at the annual festival. Eager to get involved, John enthusiastically joined the Dubbo parkrun committee only a month after the event started in 2015. He is still a Run Director nearly nine years later. This requires a selfless monthly commitment directing approximately 300 participants around the Tracker Riley cycleway. Typical of John’s vision and willingness to go above and beyond, he started a free running

clinic, “Love2Run”, to encourage those who haven’t jogged or run for a long time, to get started again. This has transitioned to Dubbo Tracksesh, a regular running session held each Wednesday. Outside of running, John is also part of the leadership team at The Baptist Church, organising mid-week bible study groups. John and his wife Janet often welcome newcomers to the city. Typically the Robins’ home becomes their first port of call until they find their feet, commence employment, or study and obtain housing in Dubbo. John has been the restorer of good health for many, including myself. He has patiently analysed our injuries, developed rehabilitation or preventative programs, and maintained a personal interest in recovery and return to full health – in my case, “until the next time’! John Robins, the community of Dubbo is proud you have chosen us as yours. You are a very deserving recipient of the Tony McGrane Award.

Flying frisbees! Meerkats in a near miss at Ultimate final By GEOFF MANN DRIVE past the South Dubbo Oval on a Monday evening, and you will be stunned by the flying objects. Dubbo Meerkats Ultimate Frisbee Club has grown over the years as people take the backyard and beachside hobby onto the playing field. On Saturday 18, the Meercats travelled to Orange for a tournament with the locals and two teams from the Blue Mountains. Tim Hosking, a founder of the sport in our city, says the MCs

improved throughout the day and ended up playing in the final. “We took the experienced Orange team into a ‘universe point’ (golden point),” Tim said. “The locals were determined to get the trophy at home, but we showed great spirit to push a determined and experienced Orange team, all the way.” he added. Tim thanked Orange Ultimate for hosting the event as well as a Come and Try day. “We had a great day with a win and a draw against the Blue Mountains teams, and the thrilling final with our hosts.” PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED

THEIR LAST RACE: Tribute i to fallen jockeys j unveiled at Condobolin

ORSE-racing is a dangerH ous game, and so often in tion to Australian history captured the bravery of men the excitement of the race, we forget the risks that jockeys take on a daily basis. Australian jockeys are elite athletes who, quite literally, place their lives on the line every time they compete in a race. Sadly, serious injuries are a frequent occurrence, and more than 800 riders have lost their lives since racing first began on our Shores. John Payne from Bathurst, hasn’t forgotten, investing years researching and recording the lives of jockeys who have died on the track over the decades. His generous contribu-

and women who brought cheers and tears to millions of race-lovers in his tome, a tribute to nearly 950 riders who have died trackside, Their Last Race, In a tribute that touches on his work, a Memorial Wall inscribed with the names of many of these fallen sportspeople, was unveiled in Condobolin over the weekend at their Diggers Avenue Showground, commemorating many of the hoops that have paid the ultimate price, for entertaining others.

Declan’s Riverina journey to NSW water polo selection

By GEOFF MANN

DECLAN McGregor, captain of Dubbo College South Campus, has a story to tell. His selection in the NSW CHS Water Polo team, came about in “unusual” circumstances. According to Sports Coordinator Craig May, Western Region did not have enough players to form a team, Declan then nominated for the Riverina squad and, after selection trials, he took his place in the team and the rest is history. It is highly-unusual for an athlete to join another region, but Western’s “loss” was Riverina’s gain as the group returned with a bronze medal in the Open Boys Championships. “The Dubbo College community is incredibly proud of such an exceptional accomplishment,”

Craig says. Whilst it is an honour for the young player to represent the State, Declan definitely has water polo in his blood. Dad Sam competed at three Olympics – Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and London 2012 – before moving back to Dubbo where he had started school. The man who led Australia to the Quarter-Finals in London, has joined forces with Dubbo John and Nita McGrath Honouree, Dennis Valantine to restore water polo in the city. They have built on the legacy of another three-time Olympian, Ted Pierce, who was part of a strong Dubbo team in the 1950s. Congratulations Declan. All the best at the next level!
