Students' winning designs welcoming visitors to the Golden West R
hinoceros (from the Greek word for ‘nose-horned’) have come to represent Dubbo. Now three local students, presenting a new take on these beloved megafauna, have had their creative efforts rewarded with high-profile installations in the Golden West. The trio of newly-designed and freshly-painted rhino statues were recently revealed at the entrance to town, on the southbound Newell Highway, Narromine Road, and Mitchell Highway. Feature design concepts by the students were selected following a competition to generate a fresh new look for the beloved rhinos, Dubbo Mayor, Councillor Mathew Dickerson said. “Dubbo Region rhinos have been a talking point for residents and visitors alike for many years now,” Cr Dickerson said. “I am happy to see the latest group of rhinos, otherwise known as a ‘crash’ of rhinos, installed and looking fantastic,” he added. Madison Roche from Dubbo Senior Campus, Montanna McNair from Dubbo Christian School, and Alayna Haque from St Johns College, were the winning designers chosen to be featured on the rhinos, with local artist Laura Holland applying the finished work to the statues. Madison said she was thrilled to hear her design had been chosen, and seeing it fully-realised and installed, was incredible. “When creating my design, I wanted to give people a snapshot of the
great places to visit when you come to Dubbo,” Madison said. “It’s really exciting to get my art out there and tell people that I have designed a rhino that’s at the entrance to my hometown,” she added. The original Rhino Adventure Sculpture Trail of life-size rhinos was a tourism promotion that spanned the Central West from Bathurst to Dubbo in 2014. The trail was developed in support of the Taronga Conservation Society’s Wild Rhinos initiative, raising awareness and valuable funds for the plight of all rhino species. While several of the rhinos on the original trail are no longer promoted, the rhinos in the Dubbo Region have become a prominent feature. Council is currently undertaking additional consultation for the rhino statue in Wellington and is gathering information from the Wellington community in regard to future plans for the statue’s replacement. Wellington residents interested in contributing to this discussion are encouraged to submit feedback, at Council’s YourSay page at: yoursay.dubbo.nsw.gov.au/ rhino-renewal-project-dubbo-region PICTURED: Three new illustrated rhinoceros statues have been installed at the entrance to town, including this one with designer Madison Roche from Dubbo Senior Campus, artist Laura Holland, and Dubbo Mayor, Councillor Mathew Dickerson. White Ribbon Day attitudes changing to domestic violence
W
By DAVID DIXON
hile domestic violence may seem like one of those intractable social evils that has been with us forever, local campaigner Mark Noonan is seeing some encouraging signs in the Dubbo community. The recent success of the White Ribbon Day at the Church Street Rotunda may be an indication of changes to societal attitudes, he believes. “It went really well, we were really pleased with the number of providers and the level of community engagement,” the Vice-Chair of Dubbo Violence Prevention Collective said. “It did draw a lot of people in, we had a barbecue, and we had a number of different social services, mental health, and even financial advice groups there, to show people what is available in the area,” Mark added. One sobering display at the event, however, did show in stark relief how far we have to go to make progress against this vexing social problem. “We had cut-outs of 2843 people and strung them around the rotunda,” Mark said. “This represents the number of domestic violence incidents reported to Dubbo Police in the Dubbo Local Government area, over the past year,” he explained. Although this might seem like a staggering figure in a region that typically has some of the highest rates in the state, he is seeing some changes locally in how people view and deal with partner violence. “I have seen an improvement in both the attitude and awareness over the past two decades, people are now more aware of it; I’ve also seen an increase in the willingness to report as well,” Mark said. “That does mean a change of behaviour in those used to violence in their lives, that they’re no longer prepared to accept it.” While domestic violence continues to plague the region – Far West and Orana recorded a nine per cent increase in cases over the past year – recognising the extent of the issue is only the beginning. “It is a major problem that we’re not bringing the numbers down,” Mark said. “We need a change in behaviour, recognising the problem is the start, changing how people behave, is the hard part,” he concluded.

With a store in the Orana Mall, and a new outlet recently launched on Macquarie Street, Nangar Gems offers a range of high-quality and unique brands and also custom-made pieces from engagement and wedding rings to personal jewellery. “My Mum and Dad started the business in the mid-eighties, and my sisters and brother have all worked there, it’s a real family-owned business,” Manager, Renee Towers explained. “My Mum’s heritage is sapphire mines in the Inverell, Glenn Innes area. Mum and Dad both learnt how to cut gemstones and Dad then became a jeweller, they started their business in our garage on our family farm near the Nangar Mountain Range towards Eugowra, that’s where the name comes from,” she added. FOCUS ON FLETCHERS
Living the Aussie life is a dream come true for Kai-Yu By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY TWENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD Taiwanese architect, Kai-Yu Yang spent three months in Brisbane seeing the sights and practicing his English before starting in 2022 with Fletcher International Exports in their West Australian Albany plant before moving to Dubbo at Easter. “I have a Major in architecture and was doing architectural designs in Taiwan, designing houses, and buildings and public construction but it was very tiring because you have to deal with many clients, and I wanted to try new things, so I came to Australia,” he told Dubbo Photo News. Though the work is like nothing he’s done before, Kai-Yu says the system at Fletcher International Exports was one of the company’s characteristics he found the most surprising. “If I need to talk to a supervisor, about anything, I’m able to do that, which is a very fresh ex-
perience because at home you’re dealing with clients and your boss, and you need to be a bridge between them and sometimes that puts you under a lot of pressure. In Australia, you work hard but you also rest and play hard too, and I like this lifestyle.” Kai-Yu’s role at Fletchers is to wrap and box product which is being prepared for export, sometimes operate the forklift, work in the cold room, and assist with operating and repairing the robotics. “I went to TAFE to get my forklift licence and I learned how to operate the robot with a supervisor who taught me,” he said. “If you work hard here, you will get fair pay and for the rest of your time, you can deal with your hobbies and relax, go to the pub or something, you get to experience life here, whereas in Taiwan there’s a lot of pressure to just work. “It’s also like a big working family here and yes, I have met
the Fletchers and they’re very kind people, and even that’s unusual for me to meet the owner of the company you work for,” he said. Kai-Yu is the eldest sibling to a twin brother and a sister who live in Taiwan, and both support his decision to move to Australia for work while he pursues his goal to live in Australia permanently one day, if he can. “I’m the first person in my family to work as an expatriate,” Kai-Yu said. After work, Kai-Yu says he enjoys swimming but he’s also a huge fan of baseball which is the number one national sport in Taiwan, and which he played competitively while in primary and high school. “It’s very popular in Taiwan and I played for almost six years as a pitcher,” he said, adding that the hometown where he grew up, is a city near the mountains, which was 20 minutes from the sea.”

Generous donation enables agricultural learning By LANA EATHER BURRABADINE Christian Community School, on the outskirts of Dubbo, recently received a donation of a brand-new tractor from UHI Machinery. The school was rebirthed in 2019 after potential closure with just 19 students in K-6, and currently has 107 students from kindergarten to Year 8. The school is planning on expanding to Year 9 and 10 over the next two years. After seeking sponsorship for a planned high school agricultural program from UHI, the school was fortunately donated a 45hp tractor with seven attachments. The value of this generous donation is approximately $30,000. Burrabadine Christian Community School has access to over 65 acres of arable land, and are planning an extensive agriculture program. Upcoming plans include cropping native seeds, a garlic area, and livestock such as chickens and Merino sheep. Generous donation from UHI Machinery. Jonathen Ebba (REDI.E) and Peter English (Meals on Wheels). PHOTOS: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS
By LANA EATHER MEALS on Wheels and Wilay Café have united to bring delicious meals transported to Dubbo residents by a dedicated team of volunteer drivers. It is the third week of distribution from Wilay Café in Dubbo’s Blueridge Estate, and the feedback from Meals on Wheels clients has been overwhelmingly positive. Each weekday morning an assortment of hot and cold meals with a dessert option are prepared by the Wilay Café staff. The Wilay Café is also the key hospitality training hub for
the Regional Enterprise Development Institute Ltd (REDI.E). REDI.E work with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth from across Western NSW to achieve training and work readiness within the hospitality industry. Meals on Wheels Service Manager Peter English expresses a glowing endorsement of both organisations: “We are so proud of this association with REDI.E and the Wilay Café. We have found the teams to be enthusiastic, approachable and happy. The meals are delicious and there is a fantastic
selection over the month of meal rotations and menu ordering.” REDI.E Corporate Services Manager Jonathen Ebba also conveys the importance of the experience to the training staff at Wilay Café: “This allows training staff to be involved in preparing and packing bulk meal orders in a quick timeframe.” Meals on Wheels encourages those within the Dubbo community to contact the Australian Government’s My Aged Care to explore the provisions and providers available within the region for aged care services.

Lions stocking our Christmas favourites for over 58 years By LANA EATHER IT is a family favourite, and one steeped in history. The Lions Traditional Christmas Cake was first released in 1965 and has become an Australian icon along with its counterparts the Traditional Christmas Pudding and Lions Mints. The Christmas Cake has raised over $60 million dollars towards the Lions fundraising efforts. Lions Clubs throughout Australia and Papua New Guinea are involved in establishing and managing a range of national projects, activities, foundations and initiatives. Funds raised by Lions Clubs go towards funding medical research, healthcare, assisting adults and children with disabilities, emergency response, and other purposes to help the community. Over the years of the Lions Traditional Christmas Cake production, it has been manufactured by brands such as Big Sister, Arnott’s, Top Taste, and the current baker Melbourne family company Traditional Foods. The Christmas range includes the familiar 1kg and 1.5kg cakes plus an 80g slice, along with the 900g pudding. “It’s the cooking that takes the most time,” explains CEO of Tradi-
tional Foods Stephen Heath. “The larger cakes take two to three hours to bake, so that limits how many we can do in a day. Hats off to Lions for getting this project up and running in the first place, and for sticking with it for all these years. It’s a great project to be involved in.” Dubbo Lions Club are strong supporters of the Christmas range and have an extensive list of locations to purchase items from. The list of local Dubbo outlets is: Studio 62, Darling Street News on Macquarie, Macquarie Street Hair Shenanigans, Macquarie Street Dubbo Information Centre Mitre 10, Macquarie St Snare’s Newsagency, Talbragar St The Cardiac Centre, Dubbo Private Hospital South Dubbo Post Office Delroy Post Office Fine Lines Hairdressing, Myall St Macquarie Homestay, Tony McGrane Place Club Dubbo Koertz Pharmacy, Tamworth Street Macquarie Credit Union, Brisbane St Regional Australia Bank, Macquarie St Westfund, Macquarie Street The Greater Bank, Macquarie Street BOQ, Macquarie St Lions Christmas cakes are also on sale at the Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club.

It may not be Dickens but mayor delivers his own Yuletide message
Dickens, not Dickerson: the Yuletide classic 'A Christmas Carol' is one of the great moral tales of the Victorian age.
The season to be jolly seems to bring out the creative side of Dubbo Mayor Cr Matthew Dickerson, with this 2015 flashback video on YouTube amassing over 55,000 views as ratepayers and residents anticipate the 2023 version. IMAGE: YOUTUBE
By DAVID DIXON CHARLES Dickens’ Yuletide classic, A Christmas Carol, it may not be, but Dubbo Regional Mayor, Councillor Mathew Dickerson has, however, added his own light-hearted touch to the festive season. Ratepayers, journalists and other stakeholders trying to catch our mayor on his work mobile, are being left with a short poem – a limerick of his own authorship, in fact – asking callers to leave a message.
Accompanied by a rather scratchy violin recording, the soundtrack says: “I’m sorry that I’m not presently here, But for Dubbo, I serve with great cheer! Leave your name and your tale, I’ll return your call, without fail, I look forward to you bending my ear!” Cr Dickerson told Dubbo Photo News that he had recorded the message a month earlier and had not intentionally given it a Christmas theme, but that is
just the way it had turned out. The season to be jolly, seems to bring out the creative side of the mayor, with his Dubbo Council Christmas video messages to the local residents an annual, much-anticipated event in the Golden West. “I haven’t actually recorded the one for this year yet, thanks for reminding me, I’ll have to get onto it!” Something that we can all look forward to, with eagerness, this Christmastide.

s ’ a n a D EAGLE EYE
on the lookout for our Chrissie elves
D
ubbo’s ever-popular Elf Hunt is once again a highlight for local kids this Christmas; and a fun Festive Season activity for the whole family. Local lass, Dana Young, has been one such eagle-eyed participant, scouring the local shopping district to find a total of 10 ever-elusive elves. Dana and Mum, Sally, recently spotted four elves including at the Magnolia Nursery, The Athlete’s Foot, The Book Connection, and also at Dubbo Regional Theatre & Convention Centre. All parents are invited to take the kids to explore the region and find the elves which have been hidden in shops across the Local Government Area. Finding them won’t be easy; the elves have made themselves at home in our local shops and elf-hunters need their keen eyes to help track them all down so that Santa knows where to find them before Christmas. Each cheeky elf has a unique name for kids to record on their Elf Hunt Worksheet, and once they have found 10 elves, they can take their completed sheet to their nearest Visitor Information Centre (Dubbo or Wellington) to claim a well-deserved prize! So why not take the whole family on an adventure of discovery to explore and shop local this Christmas – with your gifts meaning so much more by giving back to a local store. Download the worksheet here or pickup a pre-printed copy from Dubbo or Wellington Information Centre – and start elf-hunting! For more information, go to: https://tinyurl.com/dubboelf

Holistic approach to the
perfect body shape
Surgery is only one way to control body mass issues, with
“Our clients see our dietitian, we expect them also to go to our psychologist; they work together to determine if they are seeing eating disorders, or dietary habits, that are the cause; it’s a multi-disciplinary team approach – our dietitian, our psychologist, and our surgeon.”
one of our top local clinics, taking an holistic approach to the challenge. At Macquarie Weight Loss and Surgical Services, every person’s passage to their ideal and healthy shape, is a unique journey tailored to their own specific needs.
Operating locally since 2018, the team have been in their current 9 Elsworth Street location, for just under a year as their business has grown, with the issues they deal with, also increasingly-common.
Surgeon and principal, Chandika Liyanage, believes that developing each client’s course of action, requires a multi-disciplinary plan developed by their in-house team of health professionals. “Ours is a multi-purpose clinic specifically to help people lose weight, offering them the full breadth of options, usually tailor-made,” the metropolitan-trained specialist orginally from the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, explained. “Some people are not suitable for surgical intervention, so we look at a range of other options,” he added. This teams-based approach, explores the whole range of issues to do with what is an enduring, increasingly-common, and persistent problem, in our sedentary and affluent society. “While it is recommended that clinics like ours have a clinical psychologist, many don’t, but we see the value in the service, that is part of what we view as, our duty-of-care” Chandika explained.
“This location has better light, space, and is more functional for our needs, our clients are very happy here. “Weight issues are also a growing problem in this region, quite extensive, and generally related to poor dietary habits, and lack of exercise, there’s no easy answers,” Chandika said. A distinguished and accomplished surgeon in his chosen field, it was the region’s enviable lifestyle that originally brought he and his family to the golden west. “We moved to Dubbo to raise a young family; we viewed it as a place with a nice sense of community,” Chandika explained. “But I still have strong links with Royal Prince Alfred, many of my former colleagues also come to Dubbo, for when we need their services,” he concluded.

Shippy retires in style after 50 years of nursing By LANA EATHER Photos by KEN SMITH
Rosalyn Shipp celebrated her 50th year of nursing this year and commemorated her illustrious career with a retirement party with friends and family. Rosalyn shares her story with Dubbo Photo News: I was born in Dubbo in February, 1956. My parents were Mickey and Betty Shipp. Dad passed away in 1970, when I was just 14. I had one older sister Lorraine who sadly passed away on October 25 this year. Lorraine will be sadly missed. I went to Dubbo Central School and then Dubbo High School. When I was young, I was in the Dubbo Swimming Club and during winter I played hockey. In 1973, when I was in 5th form (Year 11), I decided I wanted to begin nursing. I got an application form in September 1973 and then started nursing on October 3. I moved into the nurses’ home and end up living there for 11 years. What great times we had there, and lifelong friends were made during that time. My first shift was in the old maternity ward. The shift started at 6am. I did my first 12 months there and enjoyed every moment. My first uniform was a light mauve with a white cap. I have special memories of the girls there that were so good to me when I first started… Janet, Marg, Bev and Pam. There have been three maternity wards while I have worked at the hospital. The old one is where the medical ward is now. After my first 12 months in maternity ward, I worked mostly in the old female and male wards. They were the best wards to work in. In 1976 they introduced ward clerks who were enrolled nurses in those days. Dr Beith started doing the rounds and he began calling me ‘Matron’ and that name has stuck. Mum remarried to John Porter in 1976 and they moved to the Gold Coast. I spent my annual leave sun-baking on the Gold Coast, visiting mum and John. In 1979 I decided to move to the Gold Coast to be closer to them. I worked three months at the Princess Alexandra Hospital but wanted to return to Dubbo. When I returned to Dubbo, I got a job back at the Dubbo Base Hospital and became the ward clerk in the male ward from 1979 to 1990. Sadly, John passed away not long after I returned to Dubbo, however mum remained there for many years and that was
my destination for annual leave. My in-charge in the female ward was Lorraine, and male ward was Helen. I still remain good friends with them both. I have seen a few matrons during my time at the hospital. Today they are called the directors of nursing. I have met so many girls through nursing that have become lifelong friends. I can remember going to a hospital ball as robots with Liz and Tarn. We made the robot outfits out of cardboard but then we discovered we couldn’t bend when we had them on! We had to get lifted onto the back of a ute and taken to the ball. We called ourselves A1, B1 and C1. Through nursing I met Bernadette and, after a visit to her hometown of Forbes, she introduced her brother Stephen. We married in 1984 and will be celebrating 40 years of marriage in June next year. In August, 1985, Steve and I had our son Grant. After maternity leave, I returned as ward clerk. In December 1989 we decided to move to Narromine. In November, 1990, our daughter Megan was born. The next year mum moved to Narromine from the Gold Coast and we built a granny flat for her. Mum stayed with us for nearly 20 years, sadly passing away in 2013. Steve worked away a lot, and mum’s move to Narromine helped me to return to work as permanent parttime doing night duty. I have been doing night duty now for 32 years in male ward, female ward and G ward (now called medical ward). Steve and I have a beautiful family: Grant and his wife Renee and their children Alice and Elsie; and Megan and her husband Alister and their son Fletcher. I have seen many changes over the years, some for the better and some not. During the years I have met some lovely patients. Many friendships I’ve made have lasted over 40 years, some 50 years. I am not just a friend of the girls but also their families. I am sad to be leaving but am ready to go and have ‘my’ time and family time. It has been my life and I have no regrets. My nursing life has been great… it can be hard at times but as long as you can walk out smiling it is all worth it. I will always remember my nursing life, the good times, the sad times and the beautiful friends I’ve made.

Wellington Christian School stage 2 upgrades opened By JOANNE AUSTEN BROWN RECENTLY the Wellington Christian School Students at the opening. opened their Stage 2 building project and Dubbo Principal Jo Blatch and the two school Captains, Georgia Morris and Photo News went along to see the improvements. Grace Maurice with the opening plaque. The school was built over 41 years ago by the parents of the Christian school and members of the Wellington community. Times change and so do learning spaces, and improvements needed to be made. As the school has grown over the past few years, the school has sourced grants and the rest came from the school to refurbish the school’s learning spaces and classrooms. The library is a place to relax and be inspired. There are wonderful places for the children to sit and read. Principal Jo Blatch welcomed visitors and parents alike to see the new-and-improved learning spaces. The children were both excited and surprised by the interest from the special guests and visitors to the school. Next year the school hopes to start on Stage 3 Principal Jo Blatch, Past Principal Carl Palmer, Dubbo Christian School Principal of the refurbishment. THE FLATMATE 5 TIPS TO FIND YOUR FORMULA: PERFECT ROOMIE
Living with a flatmate isn’t just about sharing bills; it’s about blending lifestyles.
A
•••
S AUSTRALIA’S urban centres become more bustling, many are turning to shared living to combat rising rents. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect roommate, here’s a handy formula to guide you. SHARED LIVING GOALS: Before diving into the roommate pool, ask yourself: What’s my living goal? If you’re a student, perhaps you want a
study-focused environment. If you’re a young professional, maybe you’re after a harmonious work-life balance. Matching your living goals with a potential flatmate’s can pave the way for a conflict-free cohabitation. RESPECT FOR BOUNDARIES: Everyone values their personal space. An ideal flatmate respects boundaries, both physical (like your bedroom) and emotional. It’s essential to establish ground rules early on, whether it’s about having guests over or setting quiet hours. FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Australia’s cost of living, especially in
cities like Sydney and Melbourne but also in many major regional centres, isn’t a joke. Ensure your potential roomie is financially responsible. Check if they have a stable income source and discuss upfront about splitting bills, rent payment dates, and other financial obligations. SHARED CHORES EXPECTATIONS: From beachside fl ats in Gold Coast to chic apartments in Adelaide, every shared living space requires upkeep. Discuss cleaning responsibilities. Perhaps consider a chore chart or a cleaning rota. A shared understanding can prevent resentments from brewing.
COMPATIBILITY AND INTERESTS: While you don’t have to be best buddies, having a flatmate with some similar interests can be a bonus. Maybe you both share a love for AFL, or perhaps you both enjoy weekend getaways to the snow. These shared activities can turn a living arrangement into a lifelong friendship. While finding a flatmate might seem daunting, remember it’s a journey of discovery. Taking the time to evaluate these factors will not only ensure a peaceful living environment but might also lead to forming bonds that last a lifetime. Happy flatmate hunting!

A GUIDE TO BUYING A ROBOT VACUUM:
In an era where convenience is king, the robot vacuum has emerged as a domestic darling, helping countless Australians reduce the tedium of household cleaning. However, with a market burgeoning with options, selecting the right model requires careful consideration. Here’s a guide to help you make an informed purchase. Assess Cleaning Capabilities The primary aspect to evaluate is the robot vacuum’s cleaning efficacy. Investigate its suction strength, capacity of the dust container, and whether it has side brushes to tackle those hard-to-reach corners. Ensure it is versatile enough to handle different surfaces, from hard-
wood floors to thick carpets. Higherend models are often equipped with sensors to target particularly soiled spots for a thorough clean. Consider Navigation and Mapping Technology The intelligence of a robot vacuum is measured by its navigation and mapping prowess. Leadingedge devices boast a suite of sensors and cameras, charting out your living space to sidestep obstacles and design the most effective cleaning paths. Select models are also outfitted with advanced software that enables them to move systematically and avoid unnecessary impacts. For added convenience, some vacuums can be direct-
ed remotely using a smartphone application, making it effortless to schedule cleaning sessions while you’re away. Evaluate Battery Life and Charging The operational autonomy of a robot vacuum is dictated by its battery life. Premium vacuums usually offer prolonged runtimes, making them ideal for larger homes. Check how the vacuum handles recharging – does it return to its dock automatically, or will it require manual intervention? Balance Price with Quality Price is a crucial consideration, but it should not be the sole determinant. A low-cost option may save
you money upfront, but it could fall short in performance and longevity. On the other hand, shelling out for a high-end model may provide better quality and longevity. Sift through consumer reviews and undertake comparisons to discern which vacuum delivers the best value for your budget. So, before welcoming a robotic helper into your home, contemplate your specific cleaning needs and explore the features of various models. Don’t shy away from seeking advice from specialists at your local electronics retailer or home improvement store – they can provide tailored recommendations that align with your requirements.

Buying A Property Sight Unseen More people are willing to purchase a property sight unseen than they have in the past. If buying without a physical inspection, you should not be remiss in your due diligence. Do your research The internet is the starting point for almost all real estate journeys. Start the process by researching the areas where you are considering buying, looking at things like suburb data, available amenities, transport options, neighbourhood, schools etc. Use video Use the property’s marketing video, along with the floorplan to visualise how the property is laid out and positioned. Then turn to tools like Google Maps and Street View to gain an understanding of the street and immediate neighbourhood. Request a walk-through with the agent or a friend Ask the agent to do a walkthrough and Facetime or Skype with you, or else a trusted friend. This allows you to see the property in detail, and also enables you to ask any questions of the agent. COONAMBLE

Pest and building inspections are essential Pest and building inspections should be undertaken for every property purchase, but they are even more critical if you are purchasing the property sight unseen. ARIES: You’ll dream of escaping and putting your feet in the warm sands of the tropics while the sun shines down on you. You could even take this opportunity to embark on a spiritual journey. TAURUS: It doesn’t take much to move you. You must make some changes to get back to enjoying yourself. Taking part in festivities could help you to smile again. Don’t refuse an invitation. GEMINI: It’s impossible to please everyone, no matter how hard you try or how much you compromise. You must weigh the pros and cons. At work and elsewhere, it may be necessary to take a more diplomatic approach in certain situations. CANCER: You’ll be extremely efficient this week and get everything done – whether at work or home decorating for Christmas. You’ll pay attention to the small details so that everything in your home is perfect. LEO: You may be put on a pedestal for performing a remarkable heroic deed. You may involuntarily participate in an activity. In return, you’ll receive a reward or at least some form of recognition. VIRGO: You may have to change your holiday plans at the last minute and you’ll have to swap your decorations. You may also want to take some time to focus on a particular family member. LIBRA: You may be considering treating yourself to a new car as a Christmas present. You’ll be on the move this week. You’ll have a lot of errands to run and a lot of details to manage. SCORPIO: Spoil yourself and your family this festive season. There may be a system failure when it comes to paying your bills online. This week, you need your partner to be sensitive and take care of you. SAGITTARIUS: Even though the longest day of the year is fast approaching, you’ll find new ways to boost your energy. You’ll be asked to participate in several activities to break up the boredom. You could even consider a trip to celebrate. CAPRICORN: Maintain your sense of harmony by avoiding constant exposure to current events through the media. Instead, read a fun book or an entertaining TV series. It’ll make you feel lighter and more serene. AQUARIUS: You’ll help bring together many people, but you may find yourself among individuals you don’t feel very comfortable with. Remember to check up on your social network contacts to stay connected. PISCES: You’ll oversee organising everything for the holidays. You still have many tasks to complete before the end of the year, and time is running out. Certain relationships will drain your energy.

TIME WARP Tomingley Picnic Races Bookies’ ring, scones-and-cream, cup win for famous football chief By David Dixon Long-time local bookie (bookmaker), Peter Carolan well remembers this day way back in September, 1976, at the Tomingley Picnic Races. The event was a real highlight of the social calendar, at a time when horseracing was still called “the sport of kings”, and being seen in the Member’s Enclosure was a fashionable sign of status. Peter recalls working the meet 47 years ago, at a time where the bookmakers’ ring was still the centre of betting attention; eagle-eyed punters watching the prices change for each horse, trying to guess who was “coming-in” and who was “going-out” in the odds, as racetime neared. “We’d have 20-odd bookmakers, sometimes up to 30, at a meet like this; there would have been 80, 90, or up to a hundred bookies working in the region,” Peter recalled. “It’s nowhere near as good now, we’d
be lucky to have three or four at a picnic race.” The meets, he added, were a daylong event with a break for a social get-together mid-way, explaining where the term “picnic races” actually comes from! ¹AW]¼L PI^M \PM ÅZ[\ and second races, and then at about 12 o’clock, everyone went back to the campsite, and all the wives would bring out their home-cooking, fresh scones, fresh cream, sponges,” Peter said. “Then, after a couple of hours, we’d go back to the track, and restart the race meet.” This race meet he remembered well, because the cup feature event was won by a thoroughbred owned by wellknown sports administrator Kevin Humphries who, at the time, was NSW Rugby League
Tomingley Cup story 1976.
Chairman, and the man who established the State of Origin series in 1980. Humphries’ horse, Rocky Chief, from Wellington, was also trained by Betty Lane from Geurie, with Humphries and his wife trackside to receive his trophy for the Tomingley Cup. Those who remember Sydney’s corruption scandals of the 1980s, may recall Kevin Humphries’ love of the punt in another context, but that’s a story for another time and place!

Roos thinking of an old mate By GEOFF MANN NO sport honours its old veterans, its former players, and its legends from the past, more than that grand old game, rugby. Geoff Hill was one such committed Dubbo Rugby player in that golden age of local footie, the 1970s and 1980s.

Word, however, came through during the week, that the former Dubbo Rugby Club stalwart, is not in the best of health. Gerry Collins was a loyal team-mate of Geoff’s at that time, with the now-retired ABC Sport’s Commentator, recently penning a touching note for Club supporters. “I was involved in a Rugby event at Wests Bulldogs Rugby Club in Brisbane last weekend; a discussion about Rugby in Australia and France, an event run by Wests and the Alliance Francaise of Brisbane,” he said. “In an amazing coincidence, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Judy Hill was there, sad to hear about Geoff’s condition,” he added. It was here, however, that Geoff’s struggles, that come to us all in the end - one way or another, were revealed. “We had a great catch-up, and she told me about Geoff’s health battles; Judy herself was in fine form, and we got a pic with my daughter, Cathy, at the event,” he said. “Thanks again for the wonderful job you do in keeping us informed of happenings in our wonderful Dubbo Rugby Club community.” Gerry said. Thanks also, to all in our community, who take the time to record and keep us up-todate with those who have been in our lives.
Emily – simply the best Demon! By GEOFF MANN DUBBO Demons couldn’t believe their luck when a young vet landed on South Dubbo Oval a few years ago. They recognised a rare talent, and the Coonamble vet has since proved her worth to local women’s Australia Rules football. Emily Warner was a leading light in the Demons claimed their first premiership since 2018. Her story of passion, dedication, and endurance, to match her unbri-
dled talent, is one for the ages. Emily travels to Dubbo at least once a week from her growing veterinary practice in Coonamble. Add on at least half a dozen weekend trips to Bathurst, Orange, and Cowra during the regular season, and another two for finals, and you get the picture of someone who loves her sport! Emily is the first to acknowledge her clubmates, many of whom share similar travel tales and appreciates the lifeline thrown to her when she moved to the
north-west after growing-up with Aussie Rules. This is the third time in four years that Emily has been named the Central West Player of the Year, having won back-toback in 2020 and 2021. Those were remarkable achievements as the club had folded in 2019, a year after taking their first title. It is clear that Emily’s decision to return to lead the players, was a significant factor in the Demons reforming and their drive to this year’s glory. Emily Warner. PHOTO: MIKAELA CULLEN/FILE

New coaching course has Dubbo Football moving to the next level By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL DUBBO is a football stronghold and it is moving to the next level with 15 coaches completing stage one of a Level C Coaching course. Western NSW Director Andrew Fearnley and a team of Football NSW Development Officers conducted the course that ran from Friday to Sunday. Mr Fearnley says the course was aimed at coaches working with advanced beginner to competent level players aged approximately twelve (12) years of age and above. “The course is designed to provide a logical connection to the Foundation of Football Certificate covering in greater detail: (1) the technical aspects of
the game, including teaching the basics of passing, receiving and dribbling with the ball, as well as defending strategies; (2) the principles of coaching and comprehension of the principles of play; and (3) around the concept of teaching behaviour using various sorts of practice methods,” Andrew explained. He added the C Course is a prerequisite for the B Diploma and includes the Football of Football. Those undertaking the course will participate in practical sessions covering the basics of techniques as well as learning about basic playing principles of the game. The course is mostly practical and not graded, allowing the student to participate in the training sessions if they so
choose. The course also promotes participating in group discussions with the goal of exchanging experiences. The Foundation of Football course is a prerequisite for the C Diploma. “This is a wonderful opportunity for those who play the game and have been coached at various levels to enhance our own knowledge so we can give back to the community,” former NPL Premiership winning captain Jamie Lobb who has agreed to captain-coach Macquarie United in 2024 said. Football NSW sponsored female coaches, building on the incredible level of interest raised by the Matildas and the World Cup. The course runs over two weekends with the next on January 20-21. Dubbo Hockey5's is an exciting new adventure for local players DUBBO Hockey has exciting new adventures, with the new Hockey5’s initiative. This includes a six-week competition, with an overwhelming response of players nominating, from juniors through to seniors. Among the nominating players, are also large amount of new people to Dubbo hockey and returning pass player’s. The first six weeks of the program will involve players learning the rules to this fast and skillfullgame. The atmosphere on a Wednesday night at Dubbo Hockey has so far been what Dubbo Hockey Association Committee was looking for; fun, food, drinks, music, and building members numbers for our Dubbo hockey community. In the New Year, Dubbo Hockey will then be hosting the Hockey 5’s tournament for open competitors, which has been shown to have a lot of interest to date. Brent Livermore will be a main draw-card to this event, sharing his experience and knowledge of the Hockey5’s game to the Dubbo community and the region. Brent is keen to get a few of his old playing mates together to also nominate a team. This will be another positive move for Dubbo Hockey as Hockey5’s tournament will join the very successful “Masters in the Bush” event.
Record numbers at North Dubbo Sporties – time to break 60 barrier! Contributed by “PISTOL PETE” SUNDEE Combo Bowls, never ceases to amaze, when last weekend, another record crowd was achieved when a total of 58 enthusiasts rocked-up to roll at North Dubbo Sporties. Now, however, the challenge is out to break-through the 60-player barrier over the final two weeks! In more exciting news, this Saturday night at our Christmas Party, the “2023 Bowler of the Year” will be announced. The greenkeeper worked hard to provide 10 rinks for the morning, with some unexpected results. One of these was, when Sue O’Dea, Shirley Marchant, and Mike Twohill, who were
in control for most of the game against Ros Joseph, Chris Strojny, and Gordon Scott, eventually winning nine ends to take the win, 16-11. John Kennedy and Frank Armstrong, along with skip, Bryan O’Sullivan, started well and probably thought they had the wood over Ron McCauley, Ray Strawhan, and Trish Gosper. But Trish and her team locked it up nine-all on the 11th, before wrapping-up a 17-13 win with an almost perfect five on end 14. Paul Martin, Rob Pfeiffer, and Graham Ross, cruelled the comeback by Sue Armstrong, Greg Brown, and Pete Ruzans, with a slashing five, two ends from home. 19-11 the final score. Leo Balstad, Mel Giddings,
and Matt Quill, also withstood a bright first eight by Pat Sherwin, Roger Sherwin, and Col Dover, winning with a big five on the 16th. The 21-13 win reflected the keenly-contested game. Gaye Cottee and Paul Goodstat also faced strong competition from Cheryl Storch and Alex Rae. They held a three-shot advantage, before Cheryl and Alex went within one on end 15. However, Gaye and Paul then conjured a four-count on end 16, to snatch the win, 15-10. Daphne Dunbar and Ross Pharo were ably led by Karen Greenhalge, scoring a 23-12 win against Di Hildebrandt, Allan Stratford, and Pete Sinclair. Two fives in the first eight, built an insurmountable buffer as Dayne,

Ross, and Karen, forged a 23-12 victory. Sometimes it all seems inevitable! Helene Emblen and Doug Aldis, helped skip Ruth Shanks to a six-shot lead after eight, leaving Gary Huggins and Ruby Stockings with a tall hill to climb. A six shot on 13, turned it into an insurmountable mountain – 2111 the final score. Chris Castlehouse, Steve Kelly, and Phil Knight, made the most of the near-perfect conditions, rolling-up by three at the turn and doubling the score after 16. Ian Humphries, Doc Livingston, and Brian Jones, might have hoped for a better performance, going 20-10. Chris, Steve, and Phil, were third overall for the morning.
The second-placed team of Sue McCauley, Eric Satchell, and Col Cottee, were also good as they rumbled Paul Wooldridge, Therese Gaio, and John Cole into submission. They won 11 ends to record a 16-6 result. A masterful performance by Al Andriske helped him, Vicki Hummel, and Pete Bennison, to an outstanding win. A fivecount on end two, drowned the confidence of Mary Perry, Julie Brown, and Tod O’Dea. Vicki and Pete, with the incredible Al Andriske, deservedly received “Team of the day” with their 26-8 scorecard. The Sundee bowls will continue until Sunday, December 17, before resuming on Sunday, January 7.

Olivia is over the Cudgegong jumps, at inaugural Bodangora Horse Trials By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL ONLY one person is ever the first; with Olivia Rose becoming the inaugural rider over the new jump course near Bodangora, Wellington on the weekend. How appropriate was it then, that this labour of love was christened by the daughter of triple Olympic medallist, Shane Rose and Mum, Niki, both Eventing competitors? One of the event organisers, Kathy Bigwood, was especially excited when I spoke with her on Saturday morning ahead of the historic moment when the recently relocated – all the way from Mudgee – Cudgegong Jump Club; hosted their two-day event. “Coming right after the Dubbo Equestrian Championships (DESA), we are proud to welcome riders of all ages to our brilliant new complex,” Kathy said. “We have three phases – dressage, showjumping, and cross-country, over the two days, and we’ve attracted competitors from all over NSW,” she added. Kathy explained that the club, is super-grateful to the Barton family, who opened-up their property, “Glen Oak”, so others can develop their skills in this most elite of sports. “Barton is a name synonymous with the district and equine excellence. The Wellington Jockey Club has the ‘Dr Barton Memorial Cup; and, over the years, the family has produced many racehorses, as well as developing riders in a whole range of disciplines,” she added. Indeed, one of those to compete on the weekend, was Olivia Barton, riding on the course developed on her own family property. “Olivia won the Melbourne Four Star this year. “She has competed on horses bred by her mum!” Kathy revealed. In competition over the two days, riders completed their Dressage on Saturday morning, before turning their attention to jumping “Riders and horses tackle a range of heights from 50cm to 1.2-metre. “They have been well-tutored with the likes of three-times Olympic Gold Medallist, Matt Ryan, a regular presenter at weekends run by DESA at the Brocklehurst centre,” Kathy said with a tinge of pride. Matt was not the only star, in this particular equine sky, Kathy added. She said that the fledgling course also passed all the rigorous tests that such a venue requires. “We will also have some very high-profile, talented competitors on course. “Chennae Lowing won the International Four Star last year, and represented Australia at the World Championships in Italy,” she concluded. Our intrepid Photo News snapper, Mel jumped in the car – but not over the fences – to capture some of the spectacular action from the weekend!

Dubbo outlasts Bourke in “Brewery Battle” By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL IN the recent “Brewery Battle” matchup; Dubbo outlasted their western rivals, Bourke with a solid batting display getting the home-side the points. Dubbo lost only three wickets chasing down the smallish target of 9/81 that was set by the visitors. With the run-chase a little sticky early; Tony Harding and Nathan Carrol came together when the match was finely-balanced at 3/31, but were still together when Bourke’s score was reached with Harding 58 not out, while Carrol made an unbeaten 16. Best-bowlers for the Dubbo lads, were Matt Neill, with 4/14 from 10 overs, and Young Aydan Hunt bagging 3/18 from only nine ends, blitzing the Bourke line-up
