Golden ticket sees Aaron kicking-off next April’s Stock Route Music Fest! B

eing chosen as opening act for a major performing event is a thrill for any emerging artist, with Aaron Jurd bagging the honour for April’s Stock Route Music Festival. The Lake Macquarie singer-songwriter landed the prestigious golden ticket after recently winning the Stock Route Music Festival Emerging Talent Competition, via a public voting blitz on social media. “I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to be opening the Stock Route Music Festival,” Aaron said after the announcement. “It’s an incredible opportunity to share my music with such a diverse and talented line-up of artists from both Canada and Australia.” The Stock Route Music Festival is being held on Saturday, April 20, at the beautiful Lazy River Estate, and will feature an array of musical talent including Canadian sensation Dan Davidson, alongside co-headliner Australia’s own Travis Collins. Support acts include such country music luminaries as award-winning artists Ashleigh Dallas, The Bushwhackers, Max Jackson, and 2023 Toyota Star Maker finalist, Robbie Mortimer.

Aaron’s inclusion in this esteemed line-up further solidifies his status as an emerging force within the country music scene, with the prize including the paid opening performance and accommodation. Stock Route Music Festival Director Mat Smith said that the competition attracted many more entries this year with the four finalists being Aaron, Ella Powell, Ryan Mead, and Brock Curtis. Thousands voted on the outcome, with Aaron coming first in a close finish. “We were overwhelmed by the talent and number of entries and votes this year, and are excited to officially add Aaron to our list of talented artists for 2024,” Mat said. Aaron is releasing new music early next year, which he will now showcase at the festival. The Stock Route Music Festival is being supported by Club Dubbo, Destination NSW, Dubbo Regional Council, Inland Petroleum, Gilmour Constructions and Renovations, Treasco Surveyors, and Collie Hotel. Media partners, include Dubbo Photo News and 2DU/Zoo FM.

$22,000 RAISED FOR DEMENTIA RESEARCH R

esearch into one of our fastest-growing health concerns received a huge boost recently, thanks to the work of a local family deeply affected by the condition. The Third Holland Open Garden and Memory Makers Art Prize, held last month has been hailed a huge success by raising more than $20,000 for both dementia research and the Dubbo Dementia Choir. Organisers Lorraine Holland and her daughter Laura Dunkley know all too well the devastation of dementia. This is because the disease is widespread throughout their family, with Laura herself at high risk of developing the condition. The dynamic mother-and-daughter duo are passionately committed to raising funds and awareness for the shattering disease, and were therefore thrilled with the success of the 2023 show. “This year’s event was again a very successful one, both in terms of funds raised and the level of engagement from the community,” Lorraine said. “Equally as important, it further raised awareness around supporting those living with dementia and their carers,” she added. The event she explained, was fun, as well as informative. “This was evidenced by the response to Anthony Ackroyd and his ‘laughter therapy’ presentation at the cocktail party. The connection attendees had with the art and the artists’ stories and, especially, the sheer joy experienced from both the dementia choir and all those who came to listen to them sing,”

she said. A total of 130 guests attended the cocktail party to showcase entries into the Memory Makers Art Prize. More than 20 per cent of the artworks on show sold on the evening, a significant success, given the current uncertain economic climate, Lorraine said. Two original works donated by Tony Belobrajdic were sold at auction and raised more than $1000; meanwhile, approximately 500 people visited the two open gardens, at Lorraine’s home and the home of former Warren residents, Sue and Michael Egan. A special performance by the Dubbo Dementia Choir was a highlight of the day. This involved about 40 choir members initially estimated to perform, surprisingly swelling to 70 singers; another testament to how involved those living with dementia wanted to be with the day, Lorraine said. Sue Egan and Claire Austin, from the well-renowned Gin Garden Club, were scheduled for one garden walk and talk at each garden. However, they ended up conducting multiple garden walks and talks, due to the huge interest and numbers. “The garden club sold out of all their plants and garden art, providing a significant donation towards the funds raised,” Lorraine said. “Our raffle was well supported, with one of the most special outcomes, the winner of the Western Plains Taronga Zoo Safari Lodge experience, being a carer for her mum who is living with dementia.” The excitement of this prize-winner was particularly touching, she enthused.

“She was so thrilled, that she will get to have a lovely experience and respite night out with her husband, but not be too far away from her mum. Meant to be!” Lorraine said. The takings, she explained, will now be shared between some very important groups. “A total of $22,000… $3000 more than last year. This year, we will be donating $20,000 to the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, and $2000 to the Dementia Choir.” Such a fine financial outcome in these tough times, was particularly pleasing, she explained. “We are all thrilled with this result, as we anticipated that the fundraising may have been less this year, considering the economic climate. “This is such a testament to the Dubbo Community: the generosity of people, of businesses, of Rotary clubs, and the hard work of all those who gave tirelessly of their time,” Lorraine concluded.

BRINGING EYE-CARE TO THE HIMALAYAS Specsavers’ Lisa loves helping us see

R

ecently volunteering to help bring eye-care to one of the world’s poorest nations has reinforced to Lisa Truong the importance of us all looking after our sight. Specsavers Dubbo’s newest Optometrist says the unique experience with the “Eyes4Everest” charity emphasised what a gift our eyesight is for all of us. “I just came back from there. I had a month in the mountains of Nepal in the Himalayas - these were tiny villages on the mountainside of maybe a few hundred people,” Lisa said. “We’d set up from little tests to full compliance eye tests and glasses, people would walk all the way from other villages for two-three hours just to see us; Specsavers were also very, very, supportive of me going,” she added. With a commitment to the caring professions, she believes optometry offers a wonderful opportunity to provide professional care for one of the major health concerns for all of us. “It’s something that we really take for granted. My passion was always in helping people, so I thought I’d give

optometry a bit of a shot. “That’s why I joined Specsavers, we offer some really good quality eyewear, the very best, but also for those for whom cost is an issue, we cater for these people as well,” she said. Originally from Sydney’s sprawling southwest at Liverpool, Lisa made the move to Dubbo initially for both work and adventure, but now considers herself very much a local. “It started off as a career opportunity, I wanted to do something a little bit different. “But now I’ve totally fallen in love with Dubbo, and working here, with the care that we give, I really enjoy it,” she said. Like all of us though, she is feeling the heat from our protracted warm spell, just a tad. “I do mind the heat but, like everyone, I’m getting by,” she said. “Thankfully, your vision is one thing that is rarely impacted by such things as the weather or temperatures, but people have been enjoying coming into the air conditioning at the moment,” she laughed.

Understanding the importance of good vision; Specsavers Dubbo’s newest Optometrist, Lisa Truong, recently volunteered to help bring eye-care to some of the world’s poorest people. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/KEN SMITH

STREWTH! Aussie icons at the Taj Mahal, from local Chrissie card winner Zeon Kangaroos and koalas at the Taj Mahal – one of India’s most iconic structures – feature in this year’s winning Christmas card design by young local artist, Zeon Berger. Children in the Dubbo electorate all unleashed their creativity in this year’s competition, State Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said. Each festive season, the local member calls on the talents of primary school children across the electorate to help design his Christmas Card. A total of more than 450 entries flooded in from pupils across the electorate for this year’s competition. And it was 12-year-old St Mary’s Primary School student Zeon’s drawing of the Taj Mahal with greetings from Dubbo, with a few Aussie icons also taking in the sights. Second place was also hotly-contended with Beau Boland from Geurie Public

School, with his Central Australia destination drawing, earning that spot. In third place was St Laurence’s Primary School’s Brianna Perera with her beach-inspired artwork. “Zeon’s design – an iconic landmark, captured a dream to travel overseas and visit the Taj Mahal, and even included very clever branding of ‘Dub Air’ on the side of the plane,” Mr Saunders said. “Christmas can look very different from family to family, but it was wonderful to get an insight into how children right across the electorate would love to spend the holiday; a huge ‘thank-you’ to all the students who put so much into their designs this year – and the teachers and parents for their support!” Zeon’s Christmas card design is already Kangaroos, emus, and koalas at the Taj Mahal feature in this year’s winning Christmas card destarting to arrive in mailboxes across the sign by young local artist Zeon Berger, seen here with local member Dugald Saunders. ed and Natalie Snare turned off the coffee machine for the last time at their Centrepoint Cafe and food store last week. The pair have developed lifelong relationships in various businesses, but the friendly, often cheeky banter just north of Myer, has provided a unique welcoming environment. After many years in pubs, cafes and time spent in the family news agency businesses the future is uncertain, but you can rest assured,

whatever they decide to do, it will be inclusive, fun and filled with laughter. Rugby, hockey, and all sorts of sports and community interests have kept them involved over the years; what people are doing and the welfare of their families was often the connection between Ted and Nat and their customers. Thanks for your generous service, spreading happiness to everyone who passed by and entered into Centrepoint Snares!

TEACHING colleagues, students, and the whole school community, recently bid farewell to long-serving colleague at St Pius X Primary School, Dubbo, Mrs Therese Jones. These touching words were presented by Principal, Mrs Katrina Isbester, at her farewell from the School. “Today we are here to celebrate Mrs Therese Jones. Mrs Jones is an outstanding teacher and leader in our school, “But it is important to acknowledge, that Mrs Jones is a very proud mother and grandmother, who delights in sharing the accomplishments of her family and often shares heartwarming and endearing stories. Family has always been a priority for Mrs Jones. “Mrs Jones has a career that spans over 30 years in Catholic education, and St Pius X Catholic School has been blessed with her guidance and dedication for the last 16 years. “During her time in Catholic Education, Mrs Jones has been a classroom teacher, REC and Acting Assistant Principal. In all of these roles,

Mrs Jones always focused on what was best for the students. “Mrs Jones personifies Catholic Education, she constantly showed compassion and a genuine interest in each and every child she taught and worked with. She is always very generous in sharing her faith and fostering the faith and spirituality of everyone in our school community, and the wider Parish community. “Mrs Jones is really a Master craftswoman, “She is a sculptor – as every year she has molded the hearts and minds of the children in her class. “She is an artist – just adding a highlight here and there to ensure that every child would shine. “She is conductor – with the ability to make our choir sound angelic. “As I look into the audience, it is evident that many people have been touched by the wonderful contributions Mrs Jones has made, as they have come to help us celebrate this special occasion. “I am sure that each and every one of us, will carry and cherish our special memories of Mrs Jones and join me in wishing her all the best in the next chapter or her life.

Because the Dubbo Region is the best place to build your career DUBBO WORKS is highlighting the excellent career and learning opportunities the Dubbo region offers. FOCUS ON FLETCHERS

Fletchers is a second family for Tom By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY FAR from his tropical village home in Fiji where he worked as a farmer, 30-yearold Tomasi Ramosi arrived in Australia for the first time in 2021 to take up a position with Fletcher International Exports. “I mainly farmed kava and things we would normally eat in Fiji, like root crops and vegetables, and while I really love the food here too, I’ve actually discovered we can get our traditional foods at RAM International supermarket,” Tomasi told Dubbo Photo News. Tomasi’s motivation for agreeing to move here was to help his family back home, by securing a reliable, well-paid job that could also support him during his period away. Tomasi’s family include his mother, a brother and two

sisters and already within the short time he’s lived and worked in Dubbo, he’s been able to provide for them in a significant way. “There’s not much work in Fiji compared to Australia so if you can’t find a job in the Fijian cities, you tend to go back to your village and to the farming life, which is hard with long days so when you come to an opportunity like this you work so hard too because you value the opportunity and can help your family. “It’s a good thing knowing I can help them back home, and I’ve already been able to build a house in my village for my mum which is really the reason I came here, because if I’d stayed, I would have continued farming and that would have taken a lot longer to be able to afford to build a house,” he said. Ironically, Tomasi feels that working at Fletchers is

also like a family because of the way his colleagues and the company take care of their workers. “It’s one of the reasons why we all like it here especially for the fact that everybody helps each other, you could say it’s like a family because everyone is so likeable, from the boss, the people who run the company, everyone’s doing their own work but we’re a team, and the focus on safety is very good. “For example, in Fiji, if you are hurt on the job, you must just deal with it, whereas if there is an injury here, it’s treated straight away in the clinic, so they really take care of you. “I have also met the owner Roger Fletcher, which is the best thing too, because you hardly see your boss in Fiji coming around to talk to everyone, but he comes every day and Melissa, his

daughter, does the same,” he said. Tomasi’s first role was working in the cold boning room then this year he switched to becoming a fitter, helping in the maintenance department, and assisting with the regular care of the numerous machines and equipment involved in the production line. “I work as a fitter, but I also help to clean machinery that are used in the process such as in the fellmongery, the boning room, the harvest floor, and I clean the knives also,” he said. The fellmongery at Fletchers is one of many areas involved in the processing of harvested product, which aims to ensure no part of any sheep is wasted or thrown away, and in the fellmongery the purpose is to separate the wool from the skin for export where it can be converted into numerous

by-products. Though the expat life has offered Tomasi many surprises, possibly the biggest one yet, is meeting the woman of his dreams.

“The good thing, and the best thing is that I got married here to my wife who is from Mudgee,” he said with broad smile.

Disappointed at HSC result? Head-up, and don’t despair WITH the NSW Higher School Certificate results out this week, it’s worthwhile remembering for the region’s Year 12, 2023 cohort, that this is only the start of your adult life, not its defining moment. The world is littered with successful people, who goofed-off in their academic careers, and then achieved great success later in life. Even if you had in mind a postschool academic career at university, your ATAR is only the first way to get into the course you wanted. Flexibility, multi-strand routes to being accepted into courses, bridging courses, mature age study, are the rule rather than the exception of tertiary studies in the third decade of the new millennia. In truth, apart from courses with rigorous academic requirements such as medicine, engineering, pure mathematics, and

the sciences, there are a range of ways to get the chance to study the post-school courses that interest you. Even for previously-select courses like the law, accountancy, journalism, and teaching, there are a number of ways to get accepted to institutions, without having passed the advertised ATAR score for that course. Many students who miss-out on their preferred university course, often now sign up for private college, lower degree, or TAFE bridging courses, where they can show their academic mettle for entry at a later date to their preferred course. With near-full employment in post-COVID Australia, there are also jobs for the taking in a range of fields, ranging from hospitality, early childhood, clerical, sales, and labouring, which only require

a minimal TAFE diploma course to get started. Many of these also provide topshelf experience for those looking to move onto more academic and prestigious courses at a later time, say teaching or a trade. For those who like to work outside, be their own boss, and enjoy working with their hands, trades like carpentry, car mechanics, building, and plumbing, are all looking for young keen school-leavers to fill the gaps that are being provided by our blooming property and building sectors. Didn’t get the results you wanted? Yeah, it’s a little embarrassing, but the fact is that not all of us are made for careers in higher learning, and some of our greatest achievers, from former Prime Minister Paul Keating, to business leaders and film-makers, have all done it without a top HSC result.

Volunteers recognised in Dubbo Day awards By KEN SMITH

They’re named after the date of Dubbo’s gazettal as a village, and they recognise those that do good in the local community. The annual Dubbo Day Awards recently rewarded the unrivalled contribution of 10 leaders in the local community in a ceremony held at the Savannah Function Centre at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The Dubbo Day Awards, mark the anniversary of Dubbo’s gazettal as a village on November 23, 1849, and are usually presented on that day, hence their name. “Volunteers are such an important part of any community, and it is a great honour to be able to recognise and show our appreciation to the award recipients today,” Dubbo Regional Council Mayor Mathew Dickerson said in presenting the certificates. “This year’s award winners, come from a variety of backgrounds and support a number of organisations within the Dubbo community, showing what a vast population we have with varied interests,” he added. Among the presentations, was the 2023 Tony McGrane Award to John Robins, an active volunteer in the community for many years and is currently one of the Dubbo Parkrun’s Directors, a role he has held for nearly a decade. McGrane had been, consecutively, Gilgandra Shire President, Dubbo Mayor, and Independent Member for Dubbo, before his untimely death in 2004. As mayor, he was dedicated to improving and enhancing Dubbo and the surrounding regions. Other recipients included: Tim Morris: a passionate runner and small business owner who dedicates his time to the Dubbo community across a number of activities, including but not limited to Dubbo Parkrun, Dubbo Tracksesh, Dubbo Stampede and Dubbo Senior College Talented Athlete Program. Gerard Allen: a volunteer coach within the Westside Panthers Football Club for 15 years. He has contributed over 2700 hours of his time building confidence and skills of young players in the local community, organising registrations, preparing and delivering training sessions and game-day events. Musarrat Khan: senior member of the Bangladeshi Community in Dubbo and one of the founders of the community group. He

has helped in the establishment and maintenance of the community group providing leadership, support, and direction, and has worked tirelessly to bridge cultural divides and promote harmony among different communities. Jenet Stewart: founding member of the local Pink Angels, Jenet has spent long hours establishing the charity as well as contributing to the Western Cancer Centre by being a foundation director. She also looks after their publicity by managing social media and their website. Debrah Davis: joined the Dubbo Show Society committee in 2013, starting-off as a steward in the handicraft and cookery sections. Debrah later became the chief steward of the handicraft section and the pavilion chief steward in 2016. Debrah has always been ready to assist with organising the volunteers to help out across all aspects of the event. Trish Gosper: involved with the Dubbo City Ladies Bowls, now known as the ‘Sporties’, for the past 23 years. Trish is so caring of others that she freely gives her time whenever needed. As a CWA member, Trish is always first to put her hand up to assist with functions and is always making everyone welcome. Carmel Carolan: started volunteering in the retail outlet of St Vincent De Paul in 2015 dedicating her time to the smooth running of the shop. When the shop relocated to Macquarie Street, Carmel worked hard packing up and moving all the goods to the new premises. Carmel then worked many hours stripping and cleaning up the old premises. Carmel also took her turn in the care and support team and spent many hours assisting in this area. Thanasingh J Masilamani and Hitharanjini Masilamani: Mr and Mrs Masilamani, better known as ‘the Singhs’, are recognised for their pioneering and invaluable contribution to the community of Dubbo. As one of the very first migrants to settle in Dubbo in the 1970s, the Singhs have left an indelible mark on the region through their selfless dedication and unwavering commitment to fostering multiculturalism and community spirit. One of the more remarkable achievements was their instrumental role in initiating the first Dubbo Multicultural Festival in the mid-1990s.

Dubbo Photo News December 14-20, 2023

Maria celebrates her 100th Birthday Maria Slavensky was born on December 1, 1923 in Chuguev, Russia. A long-haired girl, she milked the family’s cow every day. Leaving school at 16, the Germans put her to work in an ammunition factory. Able to speak seven languages, she become a Nurses Aid. In 1949 Maria, her husband and first child Victor, boarded a Red Cross ship from Naples, Italy to Sydney and was then transferred to a detention centre in Bathurst. Upon release, they went to Westmead where Maria converted a chicken hatchery shed into a place to live. Purchasing half an acre of land on Hammers Road, Northmead, they built a little tworoom garage house with an outhouse, later extending to include a bath/laundry, a room for the two boys and a large shed. Maria had three more children: Maria in 1950, Peter in 1953 and Sonia in 1955. With the children’s

help, Maria produced and grew food on their land. A vegie patch, including salad items, rhubarb for pie, apricot, plum, mulberry trees to eat and for jams and a cow, goat, geese, chooks also played a part in the home food chain. For over twenty years Maria worked at the Fish and Chip shop in Wentworthville and Lalor Park, sending money back to her parents in Russia for them to purchase wood for the fire and a jacket for her father. In 1986, given the opportunity to sell Hammers Road and afford a four-bedroom family home, Maria moved to Dubbo. In 2022 Maria moved into Orana Gardens, Dubbo. Five generations later, Maria’s family has grown tenfold, 4 Children, 10 Grand Children, 12 Great Grand Children and 4 Great, Great Grand Children. WORDS provided by Maria’s family.

Dubbo Public School's national debating champions By LANA EATHER 2023 saw Dubbo Public School’s three debating teams achieve a multitude of achievements, with one team being crowned the winner of the Australian National Virtual Debating Competition. The competition comprises over 140 public and private school teams from six states within Australia. The five girls involved in this team competed in ten debates, each with a five-day preparation period. The varied topics discussed included ‘Should Australia be a republic?’, ‘Should Australia ban unethical products?’ and the final winning debate, ‘Should the Australian Government fund wind power over solar power?’ “It has widened the team’s knowledge, and their ability to critically think about a wide range of topics,” Dubbo Public School teacher and debating coordinator Tracey Jones shares. “I am so proud of all the teams. This is my second year of assisting the debating teams, and I love it. We will be back in 2024!” Debating involves not only public speaking abilities, but

also researching, writing, cooperation, decision making and planning. The teams of Year 5 and 6 students express they loved the experience, and now feel “more confident and natural in public speaking.” The cooperative teamwork aspect and the ability “to argue without getting into trouble” were also popular responses to the benefits of debating. Two teams from Dubbo Public School also competed in the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The Premier’s Debating Challenge encompasses NSW Government school children from Years 5-12 with the aim of developing the reasoning and public skills of students. The teams were undefeated in the Dubbo zone and faced each other in the zone finals. The zone champions were then victorious in the Western Region and went on to compete in the state finals. This team rivalled the Top 10 debating teams from NSW over a three-day competition held in Sydney. Each debate in this challenge is a one-hour preparation debate. Teams do not know the topics or which side of the debate they are on until one hour before the debate begins. Dubbo Public School’s debating teams with teacher Mrs Tracey Jones. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

THUMBS UP!

Get kids off the iPad and into a good book these summer hols

Thumbs up to Kayleigh at the Colour Copy Shop for her great service and product knowledge.

READING is one of the key indicators of success in later life, with Macquarie Regional Library, currently running a book club to help get local kids off their devices these holidays. The Summer Reading Club is a fun, free reading rewards program for children and young people who are aged from five to 15, and is designed to help maintain literacy levels during the summer holiday period. Children simply log their reading lists for a chance to win one of 12 prize packs and go into the draw to win one of four Nintendo Switch Lites. “Reading challenges, such as the Summer Reading Club, are a great way to encourage children to keep reading during the school holidays,” Macquarie Regional Library Manager Kathryn McAlister said. “Reading is a skill for life and a great form of entertainment and relaxation,” she added. The Macquarie Regional Library branches have an extensive range of books for children and young people as well as access to a large range of audio books via apps such as Libby, Borrow Box and IndyReads. “The summer school holidays are a great opportunity to continue to develop and grow a child’s literacy skills and their love for reading. Books can be borrowed free-of-charge with a library card and allow children to explore the wonderful world of books,” Ms McAlister said. There are two ways to register for the Summer Reading Club: simply download the Beanstack Tracker app or register online by visiting www.macquarielibrary.beanstack.com or visit

Thumbs up to Lazy River Estate for an amazing night at their Greek night. Congratulations to the whole team. Thumbs up and thank you to Albert and his accompanying officer from the East Dubbo Fire Station who attended my place last Wednesday to install a battery in one of my smoke alarms that had been keeping me awake. Thank-you for going above and beyond to assist. I am a pensioner and not good with ladders. Thumbs up to Yvonne at Woolworths Orana Mall for taking such great care of me when I was feeling unwell at the self-serve checkout on Friday, December 8. Your care and kindness is much appreciated. Thumbs up to all the staff and doctors at Dubbo Cancer Centre – both Oncology and Radiation – you are our “one in a million”! Your care and smiles make our hard days a little easier. Thank you all, and may your Christmas be merry, and hopefully a little peaceful. Thumbs up to Sunday evening’s Carols By Candlelight at No.1 Oval. One of my highlights was the Dubbo City Concert Band playing a lovely mix of carols as the sun set.

your local library branch and receive your first printed reading log. “To log reading sessions as part of the Summer Reading Club, children can either log them on the printed reading log available at your local library or via the Beanstack app,” Ms McAlister said. “For every 20 minutes of reading a

child completes, they receive a badge and each badge equates to one entry into the prize draw.” The Summer Reading Club runs until Thursday, February 29, 2024. For more information about the Summer Reading Club visit the Dubbo or Wellington branch or www.mrl.nsw.gov.au.

Australia Day is our national celebration, where we recognise the amazing individuals who selflessly serve our community. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/KEN SMITH/FILE

WHILE Australia Day heralds, for most of us, the end of the long summer break, it’s also our national celebration when we recognise the amazing individuals who selflessly serve our community… year-in, year-out. Nominations are now being called for the 2024 Dubbo Australia Day awards aimed at recognising the most outstanding citizens, sportspeople, and seniors, living in our community. Unlike many regional areas, Dubbo normally has no shortage of nominations for these most prestigious of local awards, Dubbo Mayor Councillor Mathew Dickerson explained. “We normally have a good number of nominations in Dubbo

for most categories,” Cr Dickerson said. “We’ve occasionally had a category where we have had only one or two nominations and, sometimes, we have not given an award for a category,” he added. The Dubbo region, he enthused, always has plenty of worthwhile locals who deserve to have the efforts they make on behalf of others recognised, with our national holiday the perfect time to acknowledge such contributions. “The Dubbo Region has no shortage of nominees, with so many people excelling in their chosen field; what better way to acknowledge the great work they do, than to honour them with a nomination for an Australia Day Award?

“We have a number of categories for the awards, aimed at ensuring people are recognised across all areas and across the region,” Cr Dickerson said. Award nominations are being accepted in both Dubbo and Wellington for the following categories: Dubbo:  Citizen of the Year  Senior Citizen of the Year  Young Citizen of the Year  Sportsperson of the Year  Young Sportsperson of the Year  Services to Sports Award  Cultural Person of the year Wellington:  Citizen of the Year  Senior Citizen of the Year  Young Citizen of the Year

BEST TRADIES IN TOWN

Yard King’s Mat says prepare your property now for the big dry

T

rying to keep your garden and lawn ship-shape during the current hot spell? Better act now, Mat Sharp believes.

the ground and remove soil that contains grass, thatch, soil, and roots, which enhances overall lawn health.

Principal of the Yard King garden and landscape services, he believes that recent mild, wet summers leading up to our current El Nino (dry cycle), could leave district gardens and lawns vulnerable.

“One of the things is to add fertiliser, to top-dress down, and you have to aerate the soil by breaking up the surface structure. We do this by removing plugs of soil and grass, and that allows the soil to breathe and recover, to absorb moisture.”

Services provided by Mat’s team of experienced professionals include lawn mowing; tree pruning and removal; irrigation installation; repairs and maintenance; full lawn renovations; hedging; and weed-spraying.

Mat’s extensive background in horticulture is another string to his bow as one of Dubbo’s best local gardening businesses servicing all aspects of garden maintenance.

“People get complacent. We had two to three good years, but you have to keep the water up to your garden and lawns, before it’s too late to water,” Mat said.

Yard King also uses selective and non-selective herbicides to control broadleaf weeds in lawns and general weeds in paths and gardens.

“If you let it go too long, the ground hardens up and it’s almost impossible to get water into it, so that – even if you have some good rain, two to three good inches – it just becomes run-off,” he added.

“I’ve always done a bit of gardening; I worked for years in the agriculture industry working on farm machinery, spraying on the side. But this is the work I enjoy, I’ve been doing it for 13, 14 years, and I’m almost always very busy, people with new properties, rental properties, there’s plenty about,” Mat concluded.

Good news, is his service offers a number of practical options for ensuring your lawn and garden, survive the big dry. Techniques include additives to the lawn as well as plug aerators which penetrate

For more information, call Mat on 0432 306 759, or go to the Yard King website at: www.yardkingdubbo.com/

ARIES: As the year draws to a close, fatigue could get the best of you. Eat healthy to keep up your strength and boost your energy. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy your holidays to the fullest. TAURUS: This festive season, suggest that the whole family go somewhere magical. Promptly book flights and hotels and make other arrangements so you can enjoy an enchanting holiday. GEMINI: Don’t put things off until the last minute, whether it’s work or preparing for a party. Try to release the tension and enjoy the present moment. Remember that perfection isn’t necessary. CANCER: You could organise a gift exchange among your colleagues. When it comes to family, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover that everyone has accepted your invitation and that there will be more of you together than expected. LEO: Your boss will be extremely demanding before going on vacation. You’ll have a lot of responsibilities to take care of, and some of the people who were supposed to help you will be absent. VIRGO: Give yourself some time to sort out what’s bothering you to help free your mind. Afterwards, have fun and go on an adventure. You can strengthen your romantic relationship by paying more attention to it. LIBRA: Your boss will unexpectedly give you new responsibilities at work, which might seem to constitute a form of promotion accompanied by a pay raise. You’ll find success by taking risks and exploring the unknown. SCORPIO: If you’re single, you’ll meet new people in the run-up to the festive season. Your charm and diplomacy will enable you to iron out a family dispute and make the holiday season more serene. SAGITTARIUS: You’ll have to deal with last-minute changes this week. Some planned festivities will take place at your home, so you’ll have lots of preparations on your plate. You must be tactful and delicate with certain family members. CAPRICORN: You’ll be in the limelight in one way or another. At work, you’ll receive well-deserved recognition. If you’re in a romantic relationship, now is the time to make a marriage proposal. AQUARIUS: Despite your desire to stay on budget, your generosity will take over and cause you to give gifts to everyone close to you. Fortunately, your hard work will be generously rewarded, covering this unanticipated expense. PISCES: You’ll shine this week and put a smile on everyone’s face. Be careful when you travel. You may consider purchasing a car as a Christmas present for yourself.

The official function was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where Sophie’s proud parents were on hand to see her receive this fantastic honour! Hockey5s with Brent Livermore

DUBBO Hockey has exciting new adventures with the purchase of Hockey5’s boards. The locals are one of the first to introduce the new concept developed by Hockey Australia, in consultation with Kookaburra legend Brent Livermore. “We have started a six-week competition with an overwhelming response of players, from juniors through to seniors; among those nominating, are many newcomers to Dubbo hockey,” Hockey President, Tracey Hardie-Jones told Photo News. “What is really exciting is there are a number of past players pulling out their sticks to get involved,” she added. The first six weeks of the competition involves players learning the rules to this fast-paced and skilled game. Tracey and her committee are excited by the response so far. “The atmosphere on a Wednesday night at Dubbo Hockey, is what the Dubbo Hockey Association was looking for – food, drinks, music and building member numbers for our Dubbo hockey community.” In the New Year, Dubbo hockey will be hosting a Hockey5’s tournament for Open competitors. The interest has been very pleasing. Australian Hall of Famer, Livermore will be a main draw card to this event sharing his experience and knowledge of the Hockey5’s game to the Dubbo community and the region. “Brent is keen to get a few of his old playing mates together to also nominate a team,” Tracey said. “The likes of Steven Davies and Ben Bishop are in his sights along with Orange champions Edwina Bone and Jade Warrender and a few of us will be there as well,” she smiled. This is another positive move for Dubbo Hockey, as the Hockey5’s tournament will join the very successful Masters in the Bush Tournament.

Ella and Max team-up to bag gold in the west

By GEOFF MANN TWO of Dubbo Athletics’ finest combined to bring gold medals home across the Nullarbor after the 2023 Australian All Schools Athletics Championships wrapped-up in Perth on Sunday. Firstly, “Smiling Assassin”, Ella Penman completed her incredible school athletics’ career, with two brilliant silvers in the 800-metre and 400-metre Finals. The 17-year-old St John’s College student produced a World Junior Qualifying time on the way to her heroic second in the longer event, and flew-in just behind the winner in the 400m. Another great local athlete, all-rounder Max McAneney, who is pre-eminent in many sports at Dubbo College, also sprint-

ed home to come second in the Boys 17-years’ 400-metre Final; an enormous effort so far from home. Congratulations go-out to these committed, hard-working, and inspirational young athletes. Their dedication, willingness to take-on advice, and commitment to their peers and younger teammates, are behind such great results. Ella, keep-on smiling as you step onto the podiums; Max, with another year, a miniscule lowering of your time, should see you dangling many more medals around your neck. Congratulations also to their coach, Mark Penman, and all the volunteers at Dubbo Athletics. You deserve credit for enabling our youngsters to be the best they can be. The birth of Dubbo’s “Smiling Assassin”! In 2016 a whippet by the name of Ella Penman was breaking records at St Pius X in West Dubbo; in 2017 this running machine had swept past all-comers in Regional, Diocesan, State and Little As. Ella mowed down her opponents with such ease she never stopped smiling! Now, still under 18 the super-fit, incredibly gifted middle distance specialist is still running with her beautiful smile - that hides her deadly intent!

Bowler of the Year, Big Al making it two in a row! Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ Consistent and skilful bowling, ensured Allan Stratford was awarded the much sought-after “Bowler of the Year” trophy once again. The former hockey maestro, has taken to bowls in similar fashion. In the end, Al finished clear of the field by nine after amassing solid points on a regular basis. In thanking the appreciative crowd at the presentation, he praised all bowlers, especially runner-up “Doc” Livingston, and the third place-getter, Pete Ruzans. The Christmas end-of-year function on Saturday night saw a total of 65 bowlers dolled up to the nines off the green to acknowledge those who had excelled throughout 2023. Maybe it was the “enjoyment” of the end-of-season frivolity, but more likely the heat, that more than halved the number’s lining-up for Sundy Combo! The oppressive heat led to a “reduced overs” 12 end “turn-around” game. It was a welcomed initiative – a nice way to relax and enjoy the bowls. Participants eagerly embraced the turn-around style of play, appreciating the four less ends while baking in the sun. One of the features of “turn-around” is that each bowler gets to rotate positions.. “It’s all about friends and enjoying a Christmas drink,” was the collective vibe of the players! In the closest of games, Di Hildebrant and Eric (Santa) Satchell, utilised the experience of their skip Col Cottee to force a nine-shots each draw against Sue McCauley, Frank Armstrong, and Matt Quill. Ron McCauley, Mel Giddings, and Al Andriske were a team keen to end their year on a high, but they knew Gary Huggins, Therese Gaio, and Col Dover, would be tough. That was true as Gary, Therese and Col posted nine shots, including two fours in

the first eight ends. Yet Ron, Mel, and Al, stayed steady and kept picking-up end wins to record a narrow victory, 11-10. There was no suggestion of losing for Sue Armstrong, Ian Humphries, and Pete Sinclair, who had a plan to rumble Chris Castlehouse, John McKenzie, and Trish Gosper. Sue, Ian, and Pete used the multi-score approach for 16 shots in the first eight and raced away to a 17-12 win, enough to earn third=place for the morning. Graham Ross, Gordon Scott, and John Cole, had the passion but not the zest, as they were all but rolled by Paul Martin, Pete Bennison, and Phil Knight. Paul’s newly-developed concentration has improved his bowling noticeably. No mucking about, the “Three P’s” gave so little away, blitzing their hapless opponents with, one might say, a passionate will to win. The others may have had a few remnants to overcome from the night before, as they tried to develop a decent game. Unfortunately, they could only smile as many ends were dominated by the eventual winners. Paul, Pete, and Phil rewarded with second-place for the day! Every now and then we see a team that uses their abilities to the max with a blend that excels. Leo Balstad, Vince Mascaro, and Paul Goodstat, were that side on Sunday. Cheryl Storch, Chris Strojny, and Bryan O’Sullivan were, however, found wanting! All three are quite handy bowlers, and combined, one would expect a pretty good performance, but it wasn’t to be! Despite constantly looking for any opportunity, Leo, Vince, and Paul gave nothing away! It was more than a win, it was a morale-dampening blow to their opponents; it was first place for the morning. Leo, Vince, and Paul are now known as “the spoilers” with their 24-3, nine ends to three, walkover.

Sprint coach getting region’s young runners up to speed By GEOFF MANN LOCAL athletes were fortunate recently to benefit from the knowledge of an international-level running trainer. Paul Nancarrow, a Level IV Sprints Coach, conducted a number of two-hour Speed and Agility Clinics last Saturday and Sunday in Dubbo. The former Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Jets premiership-winning sprints and conditioning coach, put our budding young athletes across a number of sports through the following aspects of training:  dynamic warm-ups;  drills and mobility work;  how to accelerate;  deceleration and change of direction. “I love the country-area clinics; there are always a few diamonds unearthed on my travels, and Dubbo was no different,” Paul said. “To see so many people travel for up to four hours to attend, justifies why I run the clinics and visit regional areas,” he added. It is no wonder Paul was so excited, as the Dubbo club has produced some wonderful sprinters over the years including multi-Olympian Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, Shem Hollands, and Ross Poulton.
