Prawns, oysters and hams at DMC Keeping everything cool this Chrissie W

hile we are all feeling the heat this Christmas, just make sure that your delicious Christmas hams, fresh meat, prawns, oysters, and fish aren’t, Mark Knaggs says. Owner of Dubbo’s famous DMC Meat & Seafood, he advises to make sure you keep all your festive season treats, nice and cool this Yuletide. “My word… we have complimentary ice at the register for everyone, just in case people can’t get their meat and seafood out of the heat quickly,” Mark said. “That’s why we wrap all of our fresh seafood in paper to protect it, but in these temperatures, meat and seafood will spoil very quickly, if it’s not looked after properly” he added. With customers from throughout the region, he said that regulars from outlying communities often have the right idea.

“We have a lot of customers from western NSW, we also have bulk deliveries out to places like Warren. “Because of the distances they travel, they bring cooler bags, ice, eskies, and we put the food right in,” he said. Even when you get your fresh hams, prawns, oysters, and

fish home, use common sense to ensure they last as long as possible. “At Christmastime, everyone’s in and out of the fridge, so make sure you keep the door shut, don’t keep it ajar. “When you get food out, just get what you need, and put it right back in again… don’t leave

your ham sitting out on the bench-top.” One positive trend, Mark says, is that everyone stocking up on hams, fresh meat, and seafood, ensures that turn-over keeps all produce ready to go. “At the moment, everything is super-fresh, every day the truck comes up from Sydney with sea-

food that has often been caught that day. “We’re that busy, that we’re even often flying stuff up, it literally has often been caught within hours,” Mark said. With many of us now spending the summer season outside under patios and awnings, seafood barbecues have taken over for many of us from the traditional Christmas dinner, with some advice for keeping your fish in top-nick. “Some fish has a naturally fishy smell, that doesn’t mean it’s going off; if they have colour in their eyes and their flesh, and they’re firm, that’s a good sign,” Mark said. “As a rule for prawns, if they feel furry or soft, that means they’re probably past their best,” he added. With a quarter of a century in the butchery business, he has developed a loyal following among meat-lovers in the district. “Some people still love the traditional roast at Christmas, despite the weather. “I’ve been going 25 years, and many customers come in and get the same order that they have for years, and we always look after them,” Mark concluded.

Adopt, don’t shop! and drop in a gift for Pound pets this Chrissie AS we celebrate Christmas 2023, let’s not forget the abandoned pets that are, even now, hoping for the chance of a new home. Staff at the Dubbo City Animal Shelter (DCAS) and Wellington Pound (WP) are calling on the community to help give their furry friends a better festive season this year. A Christmas tree has been set up at the Dubbo City Animal Shelter and Dubbo Regional Council are looking for donations to help support the health and wellbeing of animals that come into care. These items can include:  Toys for cats and dogs (such as ‘kongs’, rope toys, balls, scratching poles, or any other type of enrichment toy);  Treats for cats/kittens and dogs/ puppies;  Food for cats/kittens and dogs/ puppies;  Flea, tick, and worming treatment;  Collars and leads. Animal welfare staff at both facilities do a wonderful job at ensuring pets that come into their care get the best attention they can, with every donation this Yuletide going towards helping them to con-

tinue their important work, Dubbo Mayor Councillor Mathew Dickerson said. He also reiterated the responsibility that comes with owning a pet, and the careful consideration that must be undertaken before buying or adopting one. “With Christmas right around the corner, the DCAS and WP staff are wanting to remind residents that pet ownership isn’t just for Christmas and the summer holidays – it is a long-term commitment, and of course, where possible, ‘adopt, don’t shop’,” Clr Dickerson said. “I encourage everyone to donate and help our staff with the fantastic work they do. It is a job that is often challenging and, at times, heartbreaking,” he added. Donations can be dropped at the DCAS between 12 noon–4.30pm, Monday to Friday, or 11am – 2pm on Saturdays. Donations will be accepted until Saturday, December 23. To view further information about the centres, as well as pets that are currently available for adoption, head to: dubbo.nsw.gov.au/ Households-Residents/pets-animals

The joy Christmas brings... Glows like the lights on a Christmas tree, it’s like a beacon, shining so bright the entire family can feel it. We sincerely hope you have a happy and safe holiday season, from our family to yours. Best wishes from the Evans family and the staff of the Abbey Funeral Home.

Supporting local arts and artists this Christmas T

By LANA EATHER

he creative abilities and resulting artworks of our local arts community are amazing. Such unique and diverse sculptures, crafts, paintings and works are all at our doorstep, and offer an exceptional choice for gift giving and collectors. Dubbo Photo News was lucky to visit just a few of our area’s creative ventures recently: The Dubbo Arts and Craft Society Cottage at 137 Cobra St is an active group of sixty members that creates a vast array of arts and crafts for purchase. The Society Cottage relies on shop sales to continue. Each member contributes to the items available with a range of paintings, knitted goods, woodworks and Christmas pieces. Spend some time in browsing the huge collection of pieces for purchase and enjoy the hospitality of the lovely members. Wellington’s Western Gallery has assembled a number of remarkable sculptures created at the Macquarie Correctional Centre. Wellington Art 2820, a local

non-profit collective within the gallery, shares: “Within Macquarie Correctional Centre a remarkable artistic transformation is taking place. Behind the imposing walls, inmates are channelling their emotions, experiences, and creative energies into captivating metal sculptures that challenge perceptions and redefine the boundaries of art. Step into our gallery and immerse yourself in the raw, untamed beauty of these extraordinary creations. Each piece bears the indelible mark of its creator’s journey, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of art. By purchasing any of these of extraordinary sculptures, you are not only investing in art that will enrich your life but also empowering individuals to reclaim their creativity and redefine their narratives.” The Western Gallery, at the corner of Nanima Crescent and Swift Street, also has a rich selection of artworks for peruse on Thursdays- Saturdays 10am-2pm.

FOCUS ON FLETCHERS

No job too large for forklift driver Carol By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY TWENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD Carol Chen is a forklift driver at the Fletcher International Exports Dubbo wool store and is pictured here with the tool of her trade in an area at Fletchers few people get to see. “I’ve been driving a forklift for over a year and got my licence in Victoria where I was working before moving to Dubbo. It’s a great skill to have, and I have my truck licence too, so I can drive the heavy rigid trucks,” Carol told Dubbo Photo News. “Fletchers is helping me to get the HR licence and it means I can transport the wool and bales to the store, I’m very lucky to be able to learn those skills, and it’s a pretty nice job I have. I have two brothers in Taiwan, and one is also driving a HR truck, but I’ve never had this experience myself before now.” Carol assists the testing of wool from both Fletchers Dubbo and West Australian plant in Albany using the forklift and trucks to receive wool that arrives on road trains from Western Australia, as well as packing and unpacking containers of wool bales. “I’ve learned so much since coming here, even about selling the wool to China,” said. Carol comes from Taipei City in the north of Taiwan and started at Fletchers in July last year, after travelling around the country for three years on a working holiday visa and has ended up staying in

Fletcher International Exports forklift driver Carol Chen. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Dubbo for almost six months. “Dubbo is very different to Taipei, which is a city more like Melbourne or Sydney, but it’s very ‘chill’ here in Dubbo, and after work you can do anything you want. In our country it’s stressful all the time, all the jobs have a lot of overtime, but here it’s beautiful and the people are just so lovely. “Taiwan is about half the size of Tasmania, but we have almost the same population as Austral-

ia in that small space so it’s very crowded and when I came to Australia everywhere felt so huge and open and so fresh and everything for me was so new, and I didn’t have very good English, but I love to talk to people, so I learned very quickly,” she said. “I find even though I’m not speaking English very well, Australian’s listen and try to understand me, which is so sweet, and here at Fletchers there’s a lot of

people from a lot of countries too and we talk and get to know about each other’s cultures, it’s amazing.” Back home, Carol worked in environmental protection after studying food science and spent time working in a food laboratory so driving a forklift is like nothing she’s ever done before. “I never thought I’d be a forklift driver but it’s a very good job, it’s so different and the people here

at Fletchers are really great, they really respect the people working here, they care about your feelings and if you’re not feeling good, they look out for you. “I see Roger Fletcher all the time, because Roger always checks around the whole factory, he’s a very nice person, he’s “my best man”, and he always asks around to see if we have any problems and says to just let him know and he’ll get things sorted out.”

FOCUS ON EDUCATION

Top of the class for young Ralph, the 2023 Dux for Dubbo College

It was good results all-round for Dubbo College in this year's HSC, with Ralph Capricho, top-scoring for ATAR marks in his Higher School Certificate. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

It was good results all-round, and a top effort for Dubbo College’s Ralph Capricho who scored top ATAR marks for his recent Higher School Certificate. With College students bagging 21 top-shelf Band Six results across 10 courses and 102 Band Five results across 21 courses, Ralph topscored with an ATAR of 94.0. Pleased as punch with his result, Ralph acknowledged the contribution that his teachers at the College had to his success. “I’m really proud of myself on getting through the HSC; Miss Su (Math’s Teacher) and Mr Eddy (Physics Teacher) were both tremendous help.” Ralph, the school’s 2023 Dux (Latin for “Leader”) revealed. “If they didn’t push me the way they did, I would have been sitting at home playing games, not coming in during the exam period; also, my friend as well, he had the same mindset as me; so, we just came in everyday and studied as much as we could for each exam, that really helped,” he enthused.

Dubbo College Senior Campus Principal, Marisha Blanco, heartily congratulated Ralph on his excellent results that put him in the top tier of Year 12 students. “I am delighted for Ralph and his peers; he has been rewarded for his discipline, determination and humility,” Ms Blanco said. “His greatest strength was leveraging the expertise and skill of his teachers, who went above and beyond to support his learning with many before, after school and holiday tutorials,” she added. Ralph had already gained early entry for Software Engineering at The University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he will be attending next year. Ms Blanco said the school’s leadership team was thrilled for the students and staff with the Year 12 results overall, which displayed commitment and diligence over a long period. “We have such diversity in terms of not only the number of students who have received outstanding results, but the diversity of courses

those results are represented in,” Miss Blanco said. “We’ve seen success across courses – 21 distinguished results, the highest results you can achieve in the HSC exams”, she added. As part of Dubbo Colleges “holistic” approach to student development and education, she said, the College’s intra and extracurricular programs, aimed to ensure that all student needs are met, and they can revel in their areas of interest. “This year reinforces the strength, power and impact that a teacher has within the classroom,” she said. “We have been very deliberate in our focus; we are unrelenting, ensuring best practice in our classrooms, and that it hits every classroom.” Dubbo College had again boasted above-State average results in a diverse range of subjects with School Captain, Zoe McAnaney also making the 2023 HSC Top Achievers list for finishing for third in the State for Community And Family Studies.

Don’t get hot under the collar working outside this summer “ONLY mad dogs and Englishman, go out in the midday sun” author Rudyard Kipling once wrote. But he could have added Australians to the list, for good measure. Due to our northern European culture and work ethic, the midday siesta – common in Asian, African, Mediterranean, and South American countries – has never been popular here, meaning we often work during the hottest time of the day. With a scorching summer already here, SafeWork NSW is urging workers and businesses to take steps to ensure they stay safe in the sun. Employers have a primary duty-of-care for employees and are encouraged to develop workplace heat management plans, in consultation with their health and safety representatives and workers, to ensure everyone stays safe when the temperature rises, SafeWork Chief Trent Curtin said. “As the weather gets warmer, it’s important businesses and workers start to talk about the procedures they will use to keep everyone safe from heat-related illnesses; we don’t want to see anyone needing medical attention due to heat exposure,” he added. Heat-related illnesses happen when the body starts to overheat due to working too hard to cool itself down. Symptoms

include a range of progressive conditions such as dehydration, fainting, heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. “Workers are reminded to listen to their body when the temperature rises and to drink plenty of water; it is vital you do not replace water with soft drinks, energy drinks, or coffee, as these can dehydrate you further. “If the weather becomes too hot and can’t be avoided, then the job might have to be stopped… worker safety must come first.” Employers who have workers completing tasks outside, must do their best to eliminate extended periods of sun exposure. This could be by providing shade, rotating tasks to reduce exposure, scheduling work to cooler times of the day, and providing personal protective equipment such as hats, long-sleeved shirts, and sunscreen. Any worker who feels their workplace is unsafe, can anonymously report their concerns directly to SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50 or via the ‘Speak Up Save Lives’ app. Tips on developing a heat management plan and managing extreme heat in the workplace can be found on the SafeWork website at:  www.safework.nsw.gov.au

Celebration for

Nani-Babu Nepali Pathshala Community Language School By LANA EATHER IN 2023 the Dubbo Nepalese Community Australia registered their Community Language School (CLS) with the NSW Department of Education’s Community Languages Schools Program. In NSW, 562 of these schools are funded by the NSW Government to teach 62 languages to 35,316 students. The Dubbo Community Language School – The Nani-Babu Nepali Pathshala – has been instrumental in providing valuable education in Nepalese language and culture to the wider community since its establishment in Dubbo in February, 2023. Recently the Dubbo Nepalese Community Australia have successfully gained an establishment grant from the NSW government in recognition of its dedication to promoting multicultural educa-

tion in the Dubbo region. In celebration of this grant and support the Dubbo Nepalese Community Australia recently held a special event honouring the volunteers and teachers of Nani-Babu Nepali Pathshala in Dubbo. Special certificates of appreciation were given to credit the hard work of the volunteers and teachers. Executive Officer of Hunter Community Languages in Newcastle Kara Matheson visited Dubbo to congratulate and thank the team at Dubbo Nepalese Community Australia for this great achievement. The Hunter Com-

munity Languages works with community groups to set up and run community language programs and schools. “Community language schools are more than just places of language education,” says Kara. “They are beacons of cultural heritage, preserving and passing on languages that are the heartbeats of diverse communities. A Community Language School education benefits families by providing children with the invaluable opportunity to know the language of their extended family; it benefits our children by giving them

Sunil Nhandari and Anuradha Khadka

access to the nuanced and sophisticated understanding of how language and culture shape the way we see and understand life and relationships, something that only bilingualism gives people. This benefits our society by fostering greater empathy, inclusivity, and mutual respect for our differences, and an appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our multicultural community. And also, importantly, a CLS education prepares our children for a globalised world where cultural literacy and multilingualism are not just assets, but necessities.”

WELLO SOLDIERS CLUB GIANT TOY RAFFLE By COLIN ROUSE

Wellington Elves are on the loose, supporting our local businesses DON’T worry, Wellington isn’t being forgotten in the great Dubbo Region Elf Hunt! Local councillor and Dubbo Regional Deputy Mayor Richard Ivey recently did the rounds of business houses, and came-up trumps. Using an Elf Hunt worksheet, children who nail ten of Santa’s little helpers can drop down to their Visitor Information Centre for a great prize. Kids just have to download or pick up their Elf Hunt worksheet. Each cheeky elf has a unique name to record, and away they go! “I live in Wellington, and I can reliably inform you that there’s 14 of the elves in town,” Cr Ivey revealed. “There’s an Elf Hunt sheet and, if they get 10 elves listed, they get a prize though, between you and me, if they get eight they’ll probably be okay,” he whispered. While designed partly to encourage

Alby, Eadie, Matilda, Hugh and Jade Charman Rebecca Pedersen and Mark Phillips

residents and ratepayers to support district businesses this Christmas, the Elf Hunt has taken on a life of its own. “It is to encourage people to shop locally, but kids have really taken to it. “This is our first time we’ve run it, and they’re out there trying to find the elves in shop windows.” Once you have found 10 elves, take your completed sheet to your Visitor Information Centre at Dubbo or Wellington and claim your well-deserved prize. Despite the doom-and-gloom one hears around in-person shopping, Cr Ivey said that both Wellington and Dubbo have really bounced back from their post-pandemic lockdowns. “There’s no doubt about it, this year and last, local businesses have experienced a bit of a push and it’s fantastic,” he observed. The Elf Hunt concludes at 5pm on Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24.

Thumbs up to Dubbo’s Christmas lights and for their handy promotion in Dubbo Photo News. Our family was literally saying “wow” – out loud – as we spotted some of the biggest and brightest of this year’s light displays. “NEWS” was both good and bad from the much-anticipated Stuart Town time capsule opening recently! First the bad news: as some had suspected – and despite the best efforts of the unknown depositors of 1973 – water had leaked into the sealed tank over the intervening 50 years. Good news: little damage had been done to much of the personal family letters and newspapers that the capsule contained, Stuart Town Advancement Association President Marcus Hanney, revealed. More than a 100 residents and visitors attended the big opening at the village’s historic School of Arts, with many families there to claim letters written to them, as descendants, way back in 1973. “We broke it open and, as we suspected, there was some water inside, but we were able to dry everything out pretty well,” Marcus said. “They were mostly envelopes, and some newspapers, letters to family members, next-of-kin, their children, and some of these families were there to accept them,” he added. The collection of printed media – including a story on the Queen’s opening of the Sydney Opera House a few weeks earlier in October, 1973 – showed the importance that printed media played in peoples’ lives in the pre-internet age. “That they had the newspapers was very interesting; we had copies of the Daily Telegraph, Wellington Times, Sydney Morning Herald, we even had an old Avon catalogue! “There were TV Weeks

with ‘Little Johnny Farnham’ and Bert Newton on the front… they were pretty wet, but we laid them out on tables in the hall, and they dried well.” The time capsule had been sealed in an old water heater encased in fibreglass and deposited in a concrete tomb way back in November, 1973, by then-NSW Premier – and Stuart Town’s most-famous son – Sir Robert Askin. Apart from the opening date in 50 years, little was known of the container, as organisers of the opening could not find any local residents or documentation that could reveal the likely contents of the capsule. “It’s been under a concrete slab behind the ANZAC Gates, so it’s very prominent… it’s just that everyone who was involved has now passed away. They were pretty wet, but there was no mould on anything, we suspect they may have added a drying agent to the contents, to ensure they didn’t spoil,” he also speculated. The old newspapers and other items, meanwhile, are still drying out on trestle tables in the hall, with what is not claimed to go into a permanent display in the village. “Anyone who suspects they may have a letter from a family member, there were about 100 in total, can contact us to make a claim,” he explained. “We’ve also got a new display cabinet that we’re going to put the other stuff into as a permanent exhibition in the School of Arts,” Marcus concluded. To claim any items that may be related to your family, contact Mr Hanney on 0417 467 459.

WHY LOCATION IS KING IN THE PROPERTY MARKET Areas with low crime rates and a sense of community foster environments where neighbours know each other, and street parties are common occurrences – a drawcard for families and professionals alike.

W

hen it comes to property investment, Australians have long lived by the adage “location, location, location” – and with good reason. Choosing where to buy a home goes beyond the walls and the garden fence; it’s about the community tapestry, the buzz of the local economy, and the hum of potential growth. Let’s dive into why location holds the crown in the real estate realm. 1. Lifestyle and Convenience A prime location offers more than just a postal address; it shapes your daily routine. Proximity to essential services like schools, supermarkets, healthcare facilities, and workplaces can drastically reduce commute times and increase life quality. Suburbs with vibrant cafes, parks, and recreational facilities also boast a lifestyle appeal that can make living in them a joy rather than just a convenience.

2. Accessibility and Transport The ease of getting around cannot be underestimated. Properties close to public transport networks, major roads, and bike paths often see a consistent demand, which can be a boon for resale value. In a sprawling country like Australia, accessibility can define how quickly you can immerse yourself in the urban buzz or escape to tranquillity.

3. Growth Potential Location is intrinsically linked to growth. Those areas poised for economic investment, such as infrastructure projects or new commercial hubs, are likely to see property values climb. Smart buyers keep their ears to the ground for government announcements and urban development plans. 4. Safety and Community A safe neighbourhood is not just about peace of mind; it’s about community bonds and shared spaces. Areas with low crime rates and a sense of community foster environments where neighbours know each other, and street parties are common occurrences – a drawcard for families and professionals alike. 5. The Long View While the present is important, so is the future. The enduring value of a location can often be gauged by its historical performance and its planned trajectory. Prospective buyers should look at long-term trends, such as historical price growth and area gentrification. While the home itself holds significant emotional value, it’s the location that can underpin the financial and lifestyle success of your property investment in Australia. After all, you can renovate a house, but you can’t change its location. A strategic choice can mean the difference between a good home and a great investment.

The Real Estate Chat with Karen Chant from Chant and Co

The Real Estate Market Takes a Pause Over Christmas As the festive season approaches, the real estate market traditionally experiences a lull, with activity slowing down as individuals focus on holiday festivities. The calm is expected to extend through December, only to give way to increased activity again around mid January. Generally the market, which has been relatively quieter during the holiday season, will begin to pick up momentum as the New Year unfolds. For prospective sellers eyeing a move in 2024, we recommend a proactive approach. Engaging with real estate agents early in the year can prove to be strategic, allowing for discussions on timelines and preparation. This early interaction sets the stage for a seamless transition into the competitive real estate landscape, providing sellers with valuable insights into market conditions and trends. February and March are generally busy months for property sales. This surge in activity is often driven by a combination of factors, including New Year resolutions, changing life circumstances, and a renewed focus on future plans. For those considering putting their properties on the market, initiating conversations with real estate professionals in January positions sellers to make informed decisions and take advantage of the anticipated uptick in buyer interest. As the holiday season unfolds, the real estate market may be hushed, but it is the perfect time to set to lay the groundwork for a successful 2024 sale. Chant and Co wishes everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year – May all your days be merry and bright! If you have any questions, contact Karen on 0448 191167 or email karen@chantandco.com.au.

GEN Z AUSSIES’S WORST FEAR:

OWNING OWN HOME IS OUT OF REACH

Owning your own home has always been the 'Great Australian Dream' but not so much for younger generations, with a recent 'Coming of Age' report finding that 21 per cent of Gen Z Aussies believe they’ll never be able to afford this lifestyle. PHOTO: REAL ESTATE INSTITUTE.

O

wning your own home has always been the ‘Great Australian Dream’ but not so much for younger generations who, a recent study shows, have other priorities. A recent ‘Coming of Age’ report by Afterpay reveals how young Aussies are setting social boundaries and letting go of traditional social expectations. Gone are the days where being married with kids before the age of 30, or owning a home in your twenties, is considered the norm, the study reveals.

In sobering news, the report found that 21 per cent, more than one-in-five, Gen Z Aussies – that is, those born be-

SUNSET STROLLS TO THE RIVER, TOGETHER.

tween 1996 and 2010 – believe they’ll never be able to afford their own home. From navigating the housing market to prioritising mental health over their career, and changing the ways they make and maintain relationships, the findings show how young Australians are managing their finances, optimising their work/life balance, and actively planning for their future. From the rising cost of living to the lingering effects of the pandemic, Gen Z have been hit by multiple crises as they’ve entered adulthood. Today, only one in six (16 per cent) own their own home, compared with a quarter (24 per

cent) of Baby Boomers at the same age. The knock-on effect of this can be seen through changing home and work lives, with 20 per cent of young Aussies saying that getting engaged or married isn’t on the cards for them right now, a drop of 50 per cent from previous generations. Becoming parents has also been deprioritised, with only one in three (34 per cent) Gen Z Aussies already having kids, compared to almost half (43 per cent) of over 30s at the same age. With the Australian property scene a wild ride lately, with rental prices soaring by a whooping 13.2 per cent in just a

year, confidence in the Australian property market is at a low, with over half (56 per cent) of young Aussies believing the current rental crisis will stay the same or worsen, and almost a quarter (22 per cent) concerned they’ll never be able to afford a property of their own. While a similar amount of Gen Z Aussies already own their own home compared to older generations at the same age (28 per cent vs 30 per cent), Gen Z is more likely to own and live on their own (11 per cent vs five per cent), whereas older generations were more likely to live with a spouse or partner (seven per cent vs 18 per cent).

1. This family photo from Debbie Edwards, shows a typical Santa scene; a cheery “ho, ho, ho” from the big guy in the red suit, a shy little girl, wondering what it’s all about... with the classic Holden in the background. 2. It was the start of a new decade at the newly-opened Orana Mall in Chrissie, 1980. Board-shorts, mop-tops; and freckly, smiling faces were all the rage with Santa . These happy, local kids are, from left, Melissa Cook (still in Dubbo), Craig Perry, bub, Bradley Perry, Sally Cook, Simon Perry and Mark Wallace (still in Dubbo). 3. It’s 12-months later, and Santa has his sleigh in Christmas 1981, in the prestigious department store Grace Bros (now Myer) for this happy snap. From left, Simon Perry, Sally Cook, Craig Perry, toddler, Bradley Perry, Lyndal Wallace (still in Dubbo), Mark Wallace (still in Dubbo), and Melissa Cook (still in Dubbo). 4. Here’s one of the Jones family’s favourite Santa family photos, titled ‘In a Rusty Holden Ute’ from the beloved antipodean Christmas carol, ‘Aussie Jingle Bells’. As well as a green elf on the car, it features a range of cute Christmassy t-shirts from Thomas the Tank Engine, the movie ‘Elf’, Star Wars and comedian Chevy Chase from National Lampoon’s ‘Christmas Vacation’. 5. Going all the way back to the year 1970, when the Beatles had their last hit on the Australian music charts, two girls with two very frightened, but brave, little relatives. It was contributed by Tracey Berry, who believes the photo was taken at The Western Stores (now Myer). It shows little Jackie Scott (from Wollongong) with Kerrie, Tracey and Toni Scott, all from Dubbo.

ORANA MALL

Retailer Week OF THE

INTERVIEW WITH SANTA

Very busy time of the year for both Mr and Mrs Claus! It’s a very busy time of the year for all of us at Christmas time, but even more so for the man-ofthe-moment, Santa Claus, who’s making his list, and checking it twice. Santa’s also been down at Orana Mall, hearing this year’s Chrissie lists, and getting the odd photo taken with keen young fans, where he’s more popular than Taylor Swift! Q. How’s it going Santa, keeping busy? A. Oh, I’ve always got a lot on at this time of year, presents to make, deliveries to do, reindeers to feed, elves to administer, and Mrs Claus is always after some more wood for the kitchen fire; it gets very cold at the North Pole, you know, and she loves her cooking!

Q. Is that your favourite part of Christmas? A. Oh, I love all of it, the smiles on the faces of the happy boys and girls, the good cheer to everyone, the chance to look back over the year and see what’s been accomplished. There’s Christmas dinner as well to look forward to. After a hard night delivering presents, I have a hearty appetite, and it shows, I have to loosen my belt to fit in Mrs Claus’ Christmas pudding! Q. How’s Christmas 2023? A. Well, it hasn’t been an easy year for everyone, but Christmas is the season of goodwill, where we all look to the future and brighter days ahead. It’s the season for families to get together, and where we remember those who aren’t as lucky or privileged

as people in Australia. It’s a chance to see how we can all do a little better in the year ahead! Q. What are the popular presents for 2023? A. Some children like the latest devices, games and technology, while others go for the old favourites, books, toys, footballs, building blocks, water pistols. The important thing is, whatever Santa brings on Christmas morning, every present comes with love. Q. Thank-you Santa, where to now? A. Oh, I’ve just got to clean and tidy the sleigh to be in tip-top shape for Christmas Eve so that Rudolf and the other reindeers, get me where I’ve got to go! Ho, Ho, Ho, Marry Christmas!

ARIES: You’ll use your persuasion skills to avoid being pushed around, ensuring everything runs smoothly. You’re right, even if the way you express yourself may lack delicacy. The main thing is to obtain satisfactory results. TAURUS: Your festivities are sure to be spectacular even if you’re on a tight budget, thanks to your creative ideas and determination. You’ll also show a great deal of affection for your partner. GEMINI: The new ideas you come up with will amaze even you. Your enthusiasm will be contagious, and others will follow you, whatever your plans. You’ll succeed in organising a memorable party. CANCER: Now is a time of reflection and introspection for some people. Take the time to recognise your successes and failures and open your mind to a new form of spirituality. LEO: You’ll be responsible for a great achievement that will be remembered for a long time, especially if you manage to bring together people who don’t get along. If you’re single, a colleague will take advantage of this quiet time to get closer to you. VIRGO: You have a lot to organise to create a memorable event for your family. Don’t let yourself be caught off guard. Make sure everything is ready in time for Santa’s arrival. Otherwise, the children will be disappointed. LIBRA: Organising a family lottery could give you the chance to round off the festive season with a trip. Either way, there’s plenty of fun to be had. You’ll show great generosity toward your loved ones. SCORPIO: You’ll be told a family secret at a party. You’ll give a speech that will move everyone. You’ll also be needed to sort out an emergency at work, even if you’re at a party. SAGITTARIUS: Don’t get involved in family quarrels, especially if they don’t involve you. Otherwise, you’ll play the role of referee to help resolve conflicts between family members. CAPRICORN: You’ll be proactive at gatherings and won’t sit idly by. You may help serve the guests. The atmosphere of the holiday season will strengthen the love between you and your partner. AQUARIUS: You’ll be the focus of attention, making people laugh with your cheeky quips. You may even receive some applause, which will naturally flatter your ego. PISCES: For part of the week, you’ll be with your family or taking care of your children or elderly parents. You’ll also be allowed to recharge your batteries. The peace and solitude of home will stimulate your creativity.

It was captivating and the knowledge that this sunset was unique is part of the reason I took a photo and shared it. I love the colours of our beautiful Dubbo sunsets but this was beautiful too and I had to share.

Anything goes for the Ducks as they splash the year away By GEOFF MANN “FLIPPERS, noodles flipper race, a noodle relay and, to top it all off, a flip, float race,” Ducks effervescent Club Captain, Dave Spokes wrote with excitement of their end-of-year jamboree. It’s Christmas, and the Dubbo Ducks let their flappers down in a fun day at the pool to wind-up

another momentous year. These men and women spend an hour or so every Sunday in the RSL pool, trying to outfox each other and molly-coddle the timekeepers into lengthening their handicaps but, when it comes down to it, they are just a flock of Ducks flapping around in the water, paddling against the biological clock to stay fit

and healthy and connected. In between all the frivolity, are some fine swimming performances, and a none-too-subtle (at times) competitiveness as members strive for weekly points, the much-cherished Ducks’ Towel, and a bonus ham at Christmas. The Christmas “pigs” on Sunday went to:

By GEOFF MANN LOCAL competitions have called drinks for the Christmas break; with the top three in the Whitney Cup faring well in the last round. CYMS had an effortless win against South Dubbo, 3/126 to 125 all-out. Ben Knaggs and Matt Purse grabbed three wickets each, while Patrick Nelson grabbed two wickets in two balls but was left short of his hat-trick ball when the innings ended, then Daniel Holland (52 not-out) Fletcher Hyde (41) put on 70 for the opening partnership to seal the points and top spot on the ladder.

 Mia Uerbegang – 50-metre Freestyle;  Peter Allan/Mia Uerbegang – the 2x25-metre Backstroke Brace Relay (Mia at $10; can only win one ham!);  John Wherritt – the 50-metre Breaststroke;  Jacob Pearce – the 25-metre Backstroke. Previous winners were Tom

Gray, Mark Scullard, Bill Greenwood, Harry Gardner, Janine Gardner, Robert Rich, Dave Sparkes, Neil Harris, Josh Bird, Jack Allen, Norm Bahr, Marg Ross, Judy Walsh, Henry Wilcockson, Glen Smith, Roger Mackay, and Mark Prentice. Have a very Quacky Christmas. See you all in the New Year for more foxing fun!

RSL-Colts Skipper, Marty Jeffrey reversed his batting order to chase-down Macquarie’s lean total of 83. It nearly backfired when the premiers slumped to 6/43, before experienced pair Brad Cox and Mitch Bower steadied the ship. And Newtown continued their rocky-road start to the season with a win over Rugby. After a heart-breaking one run loss to CYMS last week, the Tigers dismissed Rugby for 118 (Ashley Wadwha 4/29, Awesh Khadal 3/27) then Wayne Dunlop (51 not-out) and Mat Skinner (41 not-out) chased down the target with 12 overs to spare. Strong Islander influence for Dubbo Roos at Pasifika Cup

By GEOFF MANN

Will Gleeson. PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED

DUBBO Kangaroos Rugby Club has developed a strong nursery culminating in eight young players running-out for NSW in the recent Pasifika Youth Cup series. In what has been described as a great learning experience, the following players were proud to represent their club and State including:  Under 14s – Will Gleeson (captain)

 Under 15s – Blake Payne  Under 16s – Lachlan Hollingworth, Mitchell French, Rory Collins, Dominic Jarrett, Charlie Sutton, and Callum Jones. The results were as follows:  Under 14s NSW came fourth – Tonga won  Under 15s NSW came fifth – Samoa won  Under 16s NSW came sixth – Samoa won

Records set as a great year comes to a fine conclusion Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ FORTY-NINE weeks of Sunday Bowls in all types of conditions, came to a close for the year last weekend. Amazingly, only one day throughout was lost to rain, though the 48th weekend witnessed a “limited overs” concept to “de-radiate” the oppressive heat! A total of 33 enthusiasts rolled-up for the last morning taking player stats to a new high – 660 teams were formed to play the 337 games throughout the year, 80 of which were pairs; 20 games utilised the expertise of “swingers” – Chris Castlehouse doing the job on five occasions; 1947 bowlers went through the turnstiles, at an average of 39.73 players each week. The above figures are testimony to the popularity of this concept that just continues to grow. Drawing “sticks” from a cup to make-up the teams for the morning, pleases all bowlers and yet, the vagaries of stats, there were still 17 repeated teams. Apart from a couple of “turn-around” games, all games on Sunday were played over 16 ends. Daphne Dunbar, Steve Kelly, and Phil Knight must have

thought all their Christmases had come at once, racking-up a count of 38 and an incredible winning margin of 32. Then Santa made one last drop! Rob Pfeiffer and Mike Twohill were the pair sitting on Santa’s knee with their 37-3 win and a margin of 34! Back to the overall stats for the year – 2681 single shots were recorded, 1429 doubles, 703 triples, (who’s counting?), 331 fours, 131 fives, and 42 sixes. In a remarkable effort in the middle of winter, Doc Livingston, Allan Stratford, and Pete Sinclair, put all their available bowls nearer to the target than their opponents to score an almost unheard of “9”, helping them to a 25-11 win, while 15 sevens were put on the sheet and three eights! Ros Joseph, Frank Armstrong, and Pete Sinclair took to the mat against Doc Livingston, Frank Armstrong, and Skipper Tod O’Dea. Team Tod were in the Christmas mood, allowing the others to take what ended-up an emphatic win, and the award of team of the morning. Pete and his cohorts happily accepted what was given, with much appreciation! With the newly-crowned Bowler of the Year, Alan Strat-

ford playing as the second, Leo Balstad and Phil Knight had it all, combining to get the second-best team after a countback, falling short of the major prize by only one end. Ron McCauley bowled well and, with Ray Strawhan and Pete Ruzans, they accepted their fate with a smile. What a way to end the year, for Sue Armstrong and Gary Huggins, who helped Al Andriske to come back from a four-shot deficit after the firsthalf to defeat Sue O’Dea and Glenis Hanagan with Karen Greenhalge by 20 shots. This earned them third place. Sometimes, it’s just not your day! Chris Castlehouse, John Cole, and Mick Strawhan, tried hard but, when Di Hildebrant, Mel Giddings, and Skipper Graham Ross decided it was their turn to win, nothing really got in their way. The seven-outof-eight ends advantage in the first half, was insurmountable. The last morning also saw a couple of pairs matches. Bryan O’Sullivan had Ruby Stockings as his partner against Cheryl Storch with Ruth Shanks. Winning 10 of the 16 ends, Ruth and Cheryl dominated to record a strong win. The other pairs match-up, saw Eric Satchell, our bubbly

Pom, and Gordon Scott, takeon Therese Gaio and Alex Rae. Eric and Gordon maintained control to the break, but Therese and Alex did the better after the turnaround. The end result, was a brave but unsuccessful chase – three down. Paul Martin, John McKenzie, and Kevin Scott, could have been excused if they threw-in the towel after eight ends, to acknowledge Sue McCauley, Pete Bennison, and Col Dover had the wood over them, but Kevin and co, persisted. Their latter half was sheer determination and, at 19 all on the 15th it seemed an incredible upset was looming. However, perhaps it was that little bit of “luck” that gave Sue, Pete, and Col the narrow win! The enthralled crowd applauded what was a great comeback effort. For those around in the new year, Sunday, January 7 is the next date for Sundy Combo, although the Club will be open most days for those who can’t get enough, or wish to showcase the beautiful North Dubbo RSL Sporties. Thanks to all our readers over the year. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a good, if not great, New Year!

Grace and Alex also shine at National School Sports meet By GEOFF MANN IN last week’s Sports report, we highlighted the excellent efforts of Ella Penman and Max McAneney, who shared a relay silver medal and three individual silvers at the National School Sports Australia meet in Perth. We learned during the week, of two more amazing athletes who have been nurtured at the world-class complex at Barden Park. Grace spent all of her early years in Dubbo, learning to throw the discus and out the shot, before obtaining a scholarship to study at Pymble Ladies College in Sydney. The young champion was part of the College team that won the Intermediate Team’s event, and also won an individual gold medal in the shot put! Alex McGrath also won two silver medals, the U/17 Para Shot with a huge personal best throw, and the discus. Super efforts athletes, trainers, coaches and parents. Playing through the pain barrier, Tracey masters old-age injuries By GEOFF MANN HOCKEY master, Tracey Hardie-Jones, seems to only get better with the passing of time. This year, the dedicated “Hoctarian” has maintained her skills at the highest level, representing Dubbo, Western, NSW and Australia, in Masters events. After stand-out performances in Cairns late last year, Tracey was once again selected to represent the Australian Masters Hockey team in a Trans-Tasman Tournament in New Zealand in May this year. Her reward came at a cost, however! “In Cairns, I injured my knee, tearing a meniscus and a few other little things in the joint,” she explained. “Lots of work and pain, has been on my agenda since then but, with lots of support from well-known people in Dubbo, I have been able to return to the field,” she added. Playing in the green-and-gold again was an obvious motivation for the player who has given so much, so gen-

erously, for so long. Trcey’s Australian team won all three games In New Zealand, and were awarded the Gold Medal. “My knee continues to give me grief, but I have remained focused on making the best possible recovery,” she said with typically-steely determination. Following the Nationals in Perth, Tracey was named in the Australian team as a shadow player for the World Cup in 2024, an event that will attract the best players from around the globe. It will also be held in Auckland. On Saturday, November 11, Tracey also played in an Indoor Tournament in Canberra as a prelude to the World Cup Indoor trials held in Wollongong in early December. Again, it was a test of stamina and her ability to withstand the pain of a chronic knee injury. The Dubbo Hockey club president received the ultimate reward for her determination and willingness to chase her dream, though, she explained. “The Australian team was announced this week, and I have again

been selected as a shadow player for the World Indoor Cup in Nottingham, England in March 2024. “Being chosen to represent my country in both field and indoor World Cups, has given me a fire in the belly to continue to work hard and hope for a call up on both occasions. “The injury has given me a different perspective on sport, as I have never really carried an injury in my hockey career, so I am stoked with my achievements this year!” Trace said. Her determination and grit, has already earned her a Dubbo Sportsperson of the Year Award. This year she received more plaudits, including: Hockey Australia Service Award; NSW Hockey Waratah Award; Another Dubbo Regional Council Sports Award, for her contribution and outstanding achievements. “I am grateful to be recognised in this way,” she said with true humility. So are we Tracey; for your thoroughly-deserved honours!

CYMS Cougars are crushing Community Cup with big win Ben Knaggs. PHOTO: MEL POCKNALL/FILE

CYMS Cricket Club’s resurgence has been startling over the past five or six years, netting premierships and bringing young players up to representative level on a consistent basis. Last Sunday, Ben Knaggs and

his team crushed Western Sydney club, Wilberforce, in the inaugural NSW Community Cup. So impressive was the victory at Wade Park, Orange, the Cougars are confident of progressing deep into the prestigious

competition. Knaggs led the way with his hard-hitting unbeaten 37 topscore, with six others making double figures, and all-rounder Ben Patterson chipping-in with a solid 36.

Pat Nelson then made short work of the Wilberforce line up, snaring 6/20 with his wily spinners. The Cougars next match will be on Sunday, January 21, with the final in mid-February.
