Profile MOLLY NELSON Where do you work? In January 2023, I launched my very own business ‘Molly’s Tumble Co’ and it has been my primary occupation ever since. The journey so far has been thrilling yet rewarding, but a chaotic one, and I am eagerly looking forward to what the future holds for my new venture. Have you always lived in Dubbo? Yes, although I moved away to school in Orange for most of my high schooling years, coming back and forth on weekends. What are your favourite memories of growing up in Dubbo? Spending time with my younger sister Matilda. What do you like to do in your spare time? Go skiing or hanging out with my friends and family. Do you have any hidden talents or special skills? I wouldn’t say I have any hidden talents or special skills Are you a morning person or a night owl? Night owl! Do you have any pets? I have two dogs (Pippa and Ollie) and an Axolotl (Bruce). What are you watching at the moment? Big Brother. Have you read any good books lately? No, I have not read a book in quite some time. What music do you like to listen to? Country music has my heart. What does the next five years look like for you? Over the course of the next five years, my focus will be on expanding my newly launched tumbling venture. My ultimate goal is to establish my business enough, to a point where I can embark on some travel adventures with my friends.

024 is shaping up to be a big year for Macquarie Conservatorium. With the launch of “M Con”, the new Contemporary Music Program, and a renewed focus on collaboration with other organisations in the community and indeed the Orana community as a whole, MacqCon’s new Director Paul Young is excited about the future. “For us at Macquarie Conservatorium, it makes great sense to be as much of a community focused organisation as possible. The communities of the Orana Region are who we are here to serve, and hopefully everyone will notice a seismic shift in that direction during 2024”.

One part of this shift is the implementation of the new “M Con” program. This program will run contemporary ensembles and individual lessons parallel to the current offering of the conservatorium. Students of all ages will be able to sign up for private contemporary instrumental and vocal lessons, as well as Rock Bands, Glee Clubs, Studio Band, Improv Ensemble, and fully staged smaller contemporary musical theatre productions the likes of “Songs for a New World”, “The Last Five Years”, “Ordinary Days”, and “Rent!”. The conservatorium’s new Director, Paul Young, is no stranger to the Regional

Conservatorium network, having previously headed South West Music, the Regional Conservatorium based in Deniliquin NSW. Originally from Sydney, he has run successful performance programs in various Head of Department roles at The Scots College, The McDonald College of Performing Arts, and others. Prior to, and then during these tenures, he maintained a hectic performance schedule as a professional pianist, session musician and musical director, working across Australia as well as in Europe, North America and Asia with some of the best musicians in the world.

“The Regional Conservatorium Network plays a vital role in music education, performance, and community outreach across a huge area of NSW” he says. “There are incredibly talented musicians and performers, both children and adults, who would not have access to the same level of musical education if it weren’t for this program. It is vital that everyone, no matter where they are or what their circumstances, be afforded the opportunity to learn, play, and perform a musical instrument. If art is how you decorate space, music is the decoration of time”.

ow would you like to relive the adventures of sailing turbulent Antarctic waters in a century-old barque, dodging bull elephants in Kenya, camping on 1000-feet of tundra in the Arctic Circle, or riding across western Mongolia on horseback? You can experience this, and much more, at the unique seniors’ college, U3A (University of the Third Age), which is having a special open day on Monday, January 29, for those looking to keep learning as they grow. With dozens of different courses being offered for term one, 2024, long-time local Bill Stanford is again presenting one of the most popular of subjects, based on his decades of adventuring around the world. ‘’I conduct what’s called ‘Armchair Travel’,” Bill explained. “I talk about my experiences of travelling through various countries and provide photos,’’ he added. With new subjects this term including climate science and cryptic crosswords, Dubbo Chapter President Julie Wilson believes it’s a great time to get involved. “We’ve got 30 different courses, they all start the first week of February, and this Open Day is a chance for people to find out what we to offer for 2024,” Julie explained. “Some of the courses have quite high demand, such as exercise classes, and we therefore have to cap numbers,” she added. Unlike many groups catering for the elderly which have suffered membership declines post-COVID, the local U3A has bounced back to where it was, half a decade ago. “Our actual group is now 33-years-old, and we’re based at the Western Plains Cultural Centre. “Our membership is about 360, almost exactly where it was pre-pandemic, and we’re offering

about the same number of courses, too.” Julie is typical of the volunteers who keep the local group a continuing concern, helping run the organisation, while being a course facilitator herself. “I take two courses, I teach ‘Escape Into Books’ – a course on literary criticism – and another on ceramics. “For the ceramics course, we got a grant and were able to install commercial-standard kilns, pottery wheels, a full workshop,” she added. With cost in mind, costs for the courses involve a single one-off annual membership that is capped for the year. “The fee to belong for the year is only $35,” Julie said. “This entitles members to attend as many courses as they wish, there’s no cap,” she added. While members can catch this year’s course schedule and sign up online through their website, the event on the January 29 is for members who still like the personal touch. “The open day will feature all the course leaders in attendance, who can discuss what will be included in the year. “Many of our members are older, and may not be that confident on computers, this is for those people who don’t want to enrol online and prefer paper applications and paying in cash,” she concluded. U3A DUBBO 2024 COURSE ENROLMENTS WHEN: Monday 29th January 2024 WHERE: Community Arts Centre 76 Wingewarra St. Dubbo TIME: 9.30AM – 1PM More details can be found on the Dubbo U3A website: www.dubbo.u3anet.org.au or by emailing adm.u3adubbo@gmail.com

The Challenge Community Services Christmas party By JOANNE AUSTEN BROWN

The annual Christmas party for Challenge Community Services was held on Wednesday, December 20, at the Castlereagh Hotel. Many of the clients and support workers from the Dubbo area were there when Santa arrived. They enjoyed a baked lunch and received gifts from Santa as well. Later the clients and staff danced and sang along with the music. Great fun was had by all. Many of the supporters have been helping Challenge for many years.

Performing arts community mourns the loss of Kellie Dickerson Contributed by MATHEW DICKERSON THE Australian performing arts community is mourning the loss of one of its brightest stars, Kellie Dickerson. A revered musician, conductor, and pianist, Ms Dickerson, 53, passed away leaving behind a legacy of extraordinary achievements in the world of theatre and musicals. Born in Dubbo, Kellie Dickerson’s journey in music was marked by her exceptional talent and dedication. She held a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Piano Performance from Sydney University and was a distinguished member of the Symphony Australia Young Conductor’s Programme. Her career was further embellished with accolades including the Donald Peart Memorial Award for Music, the Brian Stacey Memorial Trust Scholarship for Young Conductors, and three Green Room Awards for Musical Direction of Wicked, Once, and City of Angels. Ms Dickerson’s contribution to the Australian performing arts was recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in

the 2022 Australia Day honours. Her role as Resident Musical Supervisor for Wicked Australia and Musical Director for Once Australia were among her most notable positions. She also managed the Rob Guest Endowment, a scholarship program aimed at fostering emerging talents in the musical theatre industry. Her influence extended beyond the stage. As a mentor, she guided young conductors and was instrumental in shaping future stars through the Rob Guest Endowment. She was a respected member of industry panels for the Helpmann Awards, the Australia Council, and New Musicals Australia. Her expertise was also sought by the Australian Music Examinations Board for their musical theatre syllabus. Kellie’s international acclaim included conducting music theatre and opera worldwide, with credits such as Legally Blonde, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Book of Mormon, demonstrating her versatility and mastery. Her work was not just a profession but a passion, with each performance reflecting her exceptional skill and dedication.

Despite her illustrious career, Kellie faced personal challenges with courage and dignity. Diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) in 2018, she battled this rare neurodegenerative disease with the same grace and resilience that she brought to her musical endeavours. Her struggle with MSA saw her retire from her bustling career, yet her spirit and influence continued to resonate within the arts community. Kellie Dickerson’s legacy is not just in the shows she directed or the music she conducted, but in the lives she touched and the young talents she nurtured. As tributes pour in from colleagues and admirers, it’s clear that her impact on the Australian and global performing arts scene is indelible. Her life’s work, a blend of remarkable talent, unwavering dedication, and generous mentorship, will continue to inspire and guide aspiring artists. Kellie Dickerson’s story is not just one of achievement, but of inspiring a generation of performers to pursue their dreams with the same tenacity and grace that she embodied. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy in the

world of musical theatre and beyond will undoubtedly endure. Kellie Dickerson lost her longterm partner Rob Guest, who died from a stroke aged 57 in 2008.

FOCUS ON FLETCHERS

A willingness to learn opens doors at Fletchers By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY FOR Fletcher International Exports logistics officer Matt Lynch, nothing prepared him when he discovered the scale of production and sequence of processes to get products to international markets before, he first started working there nine months ago. “It’s a bit left field for me to have applied for work at Fletchers but then given a willingness to learn and take in something new has been great, and when you see the production and learn how products get from point A to Z, it is very cool and I was surprised by the vastness of the company and the vastness of the production,” Matt told Dubbo Photo News. After almost a decade working in IT in sales and repairs, Matt decided he was ready for a change and got to thinking about how Fletchers was an ever-growing business that had been in Dubbo for over 20 years, and he’d like to find out more. “I thought I’d love to see the inner workings of Fletchers and what it actually does and as I’ve found out, you could not fathom the degree of it you until you’re actually here, it’s incredible.” Initially, he applied for a documentation clerk job, but the company offered a logistics position instead however he first wanted to get a perspective on how it all ran, then work his way up from there. “I started in the frozen load-out though I wasn’t there for long, but it was good. Obviously, I was someone new to the business, and my supervisor Joe really helped me to get a grip on a lot of things, which I had no idea about, and after that I went to chill load-out before starting in the export office. “Working in production let me see what is produced, how it’s produced, and how that whole system is managed, which is key to understanding logistics because if you’re producing one product that needs to be shipped on a particular day, you need to know when it’s produced, when it’s going to be ready, and then have it tee-d up for a container to be loaded, and set sail; it takes a lot of coordinating,” he said. Having no prior experience has never been

a problem for Matt either, and while he admits he’s on a high learning curve he’s surrounded by a team of experienced people who are ready and willing to guide and help him as he needs. “I’m learning on the job and my background in IT has definitely helped in terms of picking things up along the way, but now I’m starting to see a lot more of an improvement there, and as things tend to happen every two or three weeks, those reoccurrences help me understand what needs to be done, and there’s a lot of data entry as well, so you get used to that. “I also sit across from the main logistics person, Chris, who’s been working here for years, an absolute whiz when it comes to this stuff, then a couple of people sit beside me who’ve gone from logistics into sales, but have a great idea about logistics, so if a problem occurs, they can help handle situations, and I’ve never been made to feel like I don’t know what to do or who to go to.” A good day on the job is when everything runs smoothly but as he’s dealing with over 95 countries of course there are challenges. “Obviously, things aren’t always going to go 100 per cent smoothly, but regardless of what can happen it’s just about overcoming that and making sure everything goes as well as it can.” On reflection, Matt looks back to his school days at St Johns College where he says he let his studies slide for no particular reason and started playing computer games to pass time but didn’t have any keenness to get a career out of that either. It was only after school that he learned about IT and took some courses, then worked in IT sales and repair yet despite loving the field decided in the past year, it was time for a change. “I’d say to anyone in the same situation or maybe at a crossroads, just give it a shot because you don’t know where you could end up at Fletchers or where a role here might take you because I was thinking IT was the one path for me, but then given a chance, I’m able to learn a bunch of different kinds of things, which is leading down another path, and there’s 10 different paths that could go from there, so there’s a lot of opportunity here,” he said.

Artificial intelligence and the workforce: how to prepare

Look for training organisations that offer help preparing your workplace for more and more use of Artificial Intelligence.

ARTIFICIAL intelligence (AI) is transforming the nature of work. Because AI technologies can streamline processes and boost efficiency, routine and repetitive tasks are being automated. As a result, some jobs will become obsolete. But the emergence of AI also means human resources can be redirected toward creativity, critical thinking and problem solving. To prepare for the impact of AI, business owners can take a few strategic steps.  Reskilling and upskilling. Invest in training programs to help employees acquire new skills aligned with emerging job demands. Upskilling can bridge the gap between current roles and the new labour needs emerging with the adoption of AI.  Adaptive workforce planning. Anticipate the evolving roles within your organisation.

Redefine job descriptions and responsibilities to align with the strengths of both humans and AI.  Embrace lifelong learning. Encourage a culture of continuous learning, both among leadership and employees. This ensures that your team remains adaptable to technological shifts.  Ethical AI implementation. Integrate AI technologies thoughtfully, considering ethical implications. Address concerns about job displacement with transparency and empathy.  Human-centric approach. Recognise that AI is a tool meant to augment human capabilities, not replace them entirely. Foster an environment where employees feel valued and empowered. Do you need help preparing for the next generation of workplace technology? Visit local educational organisations and colleges to explore training opportunities.

TOM’S BRIGHT FUTURE IN PAINTING

By LANA EATHER

merging artist Tom Condon has always loved drawing and creating. While in high school Tom received support from the fantastic art department at South Campus and Senior Campus and found his passion for painting. He began group tutorials at Dubbo’s Art Club, and soon progressed to individual tutoring. Tutored by Art Club’s Jack Randell, 22-yearold Tom recently produced a series of paintings on canvas called People and Places. The paintings were selected for Dubbo Art Fair (DAF) and were exhibited at Western Plains Cultural Centre in 2023. The majority of Tom’s paintings sold and were received by gallery visitors with warmth and enthusiasm. Tom’s mother Jeanagh shares: “Tom paints a very broad range of art, from people and places to nature, and has a real passion for European scenery and locations and icons of politics and music. He has spent the past few months painting Christmas scenery, and for the past few years has

had these canvases printed to Christmas cards which he then sells to the public. WE all know the important emotional role that pets can play in our lives. And a new local program fills that gap by using inmates to train retired sports dogs for life after racing. The ‘Greyhounds As Pets’ (GAP) program, launched recently at Wellington Correctional Centre, involves female inmates, helping train retired greyhounds for adoption in the community. The program initially involves six ex-racing greyhounds being homed inside a special purpose-built facility at the centre, the third in NSW to roll-out the program. Each intake of six greyhounds is spending six weeks being socialised by the inmates who provide training and care for the animals for up to seven hours per day, preparing them to transition from racing to pet life. During the training period, inmates teach the dogs activities such as walking on a loose lead, name recognition, recall to handler, obeying directions to their bed, and laying down. The training program not only prepares greyhounds for their next stage of life, but ensures they are the perfect fit for any home.

Greyhounds in the program who show particular potential may advance to additional training to become Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) companion animals, NSW MLC Stephen Lawrence said. “As a former criminal lawyer, I can honestly say that this is one of the best programs that I’ve seen in a prison for engaging inmates and providing a real opportunity for diversionary therapy and to learn transferable skills,” he said. “As an owner of two dogs, I understand the therapeutic value of a dog. The training of these greyhounds as PTSD animals will be fantastic for people needing a companion.” The program connects retired racers to new families, while also providing meaningful opportunities to inmates who can then learn pro-social skills in domestic dog care, animal first-aid, and animal husbandry. The Wellington Correctional Centre is the latest to partner with Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) for the program which has been a continuing success since it was launched in 2010 at Dillwynia Correctional Centre at Windsor in Sydney’s north-west. It was then later introduced to

the Hunter Correctional Centre, GRNSW Chief Executive Rob Macaulay said. “We have been informed by prison staff at the centres where the prison program has been in place, that the initiative has seen better communication with inmates due to a common interest in talking about the greyhounds,” Mr Macaulay said. “At GRNSW and GAP, we have known for a long-time what loving, affectionate, and placid animals greyhounds are, and what amazing pets they make, and it is no longer a well-kept secret,” he concluded.

Orana Physie celebrate a stellar year Orana Physical Culture had much to celebrate in 2023 with individual competitors, teams, teachers, and supporters, showcased this continuing success at their annual Zone Finals late last year. The event offered the chance for this Australian dance discipline to also showcase to the wider sports community, their personal best performances in a range of syllabus routines. A select few from the group then travelled on to Homebush in western Sydney, to represent the Central Western Zone at the Olympic Park State Sports Centre. Much of the success of the club last year revolved around the commitment and passion of its five dedicated “physie” teachers who have inspired, supported, encouraged, and coached the key health and fitness goals in this aerobics-type dance sport all year. Witnessing a number of empowering sports friendships develop as the members connected and supported each other throughout 2023 was both beautiful and very special. With much excitement, the club has celebrated outstanding achievements at both the zone- and state-level of competition. Those who earned the unique honour of being semi-finalists at the national level, comprised Kylie Peacock, Giaan Cubby, and Haylie Cattell. Anyone considering joining the club, can email: oranaphysicalculture@outlook.com for more information.

ARIES: If you witness a strange situation, discuss it with those close to you. They’ll help you sort out your thoughts. Your friends will tend to confide in you, and you’ll lend them a sympathetic ear. TAURUS: You’ll be struck by the urge to renovate your space and rearrange the furniture. You’ll also explore the possibility of buying a house and moving, especially if you feel too cramped in your current home. GEMINI: The stars have aligned, and it’s time to act! You’ll react quickly and confidently in uncertain situations. In your social media activity, one of your comments will attract considerable attention. CANCER: You must take time to recharge your batteries; your health depends on it. You could commit to someone close to you, with whom you’ll share some incredibly memorable times. LEO: You can’t escape your responsibilities or ignore your obligations. Your presence is required! To have an active social life, you must organise and plan activities that get everyone on board. VIRGO: You’ll have a lot of responsibilities, and many people will be counting on you. It might be a good idea to dedicate some time to getting everything done; you’ll be easily distracted this week. LIBRA: Making all your dreams come true requires meticulous organisation and unshakeable determination. You must make adjustments to achieve your personal and professional goals. SCORPIO: You could find yourself in a worrying situation. It’s essential to focus on your priorities. If you’re artistic, you’ll be inspired to create a work that will set you apart and create a sensation. SAGITTARIUS: You’ll alternate between having a routine and going with the flow. Although you’re not always easy to understand, you’re trustworthy. You may have to weigh the pros and cons in a specific situation. CAPRICORN: Cleaning up your home and office will help you see the bigger picture. It’s important to get enough rest to prevent your immune system from weakening. AQUARIUS: You’ll perform a heroic act, such as helping someone in need. Even if you just lend someone a listening ear, they’ll be eternally grateful. PISCES: You’ll spend more time at home, perhaps because one of your children needs you. The prospect of working from home could come up, and you’ll enjoy the comfort of being in your own environment.

Paramount Tennis Club Open Day aims to serve up another smashing community event Contributed by PARAMOUNT TENNIS CLUB

Last year’s Open Day was a cracking success. This year is looking just as good. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/KEN SMITH/FILE

THIS Sunday from 4 pm, the Paramount Tennis Club is hosting an Australian Open Tennis Day. This free community event will include a BBQ, tennis, refreshments and socialising/watching the Australian Open in the clubhouse. The club will also official-

ly open its courts 4-10 which were resurfaced last year thanks to funding from the NSW Government. Local MP, Dugald Saunders will be in attendance for this. If you can assist the club promote the event in the leadup to Sunday, that would be greatly appreciated. You are also warmly invited to attend to interview attendees, get photos and vision.

Keen bowlers back on the greens Contributed by PISTOL PETE THIRTY-SEVEN bowlers swayed up and down the conditions at last week’s Sundee social bowls. One game stood out – doubles between Pete Bennison/ Mel Giddings and Eric Satchell/Gordon Scott. The latter dominated, winning all eight ends and banking 12 shots. Pete and Mel kept spirits up, finally chalking up a quad on 11. Eric and Gordon returned serve with their own four shot count to seize a commanding 21-6 win and the award of the best win of the morning. Visitor Mick Furney from Parkes skipped Daphne Dunbar and Ruby Stockings against Helene Emblen, Paul Martin and Ian Humphries. By end

five it was six each; by end eight Daphne, Ruby and Mick led 10-8 and held off their opponents for an 18-12 score and earn second place. Gary Huggins was the swinger in a game that featured a comeback. Chris Strojny and Col Cottee struggled through the first nine ends. They found themselves 3-10 down against Frank Armstrong and Anthony, however the second half was a complete reversal, with Frank and Anthony winning just one end for a single shot while Chris and Col dominated, banking 14 to finish up 17-11 and third spot for the morning. A big five count on end four gave Leo Balstad, Vicki Hummel and Pete Sinclair the advantage over Mary Perry, Ray Strawhan and Pete Ruzans. It

was 9-7 after eight ends but despite plenty of grit from the chasers, Vicki and Pete S ran out winners, 16 to 12. Ron McCauley, Gaye Cottee and Bryan O’Sullivan were pushed all the way to the 8th end by Sue McCauley, Shirley Marchant and Ricky See. It was all locked up nine each as they turned. Bryan’s team’s four on three and a five by Ricky’s mob highlighted the sector. Some small improvements by Sue, Shirley and Ricky saw them add seven to the card and secure a 16-13 win. In another of the comeback games, Sue Armstrong and Graham Ross had their hands full against Allan Stratford and Col Dover. It was hard, it was intense, and from six shots down, Allan and Col did

all they could to catch up. Sue and Graham found themselves stuck on 16 for the last five, levelled up on the 15th then, with tensions high, the two old rollers Al and Col scraped a match-winner on the last. Not often do we have visitors from Nyngan but Jasmine Bourke found what it was like to play on a green so fast compared to her home turf. She eventually made the adjustments and helped Therese Gaio and Phil Knight through to a one-shot lead over Chris Castlehouse, Steve Kelly and Al Andriske after the 8th. The second half was just as intense, neither side wanting to give anything away, but it was Jasmine, Therese and Phil that came up trumps, scoring the winning bowl on the last.

GUS DAWSON CYCLING LEGEND

T

he Dubbo community lost a true sporting legend in the lead up to Christmas when internationally-acclaimed cycling coach, Garry ‘Gus’ Dawson, passed away aged 72. While Gus will leave a large hole in the Dubbo sporting community, his legacy lives forever. The young boy who was in the saddle as soon as he could walk, whistling around the streets of North Dubbo with brothers Percy (deceased) and Tom before forging his own cycling career, is regarded as one of Australia’s most recognised mentors. “Gussy”, as he was affectionately known, built his reputation around the development of some extraordinary athletes. He also achieved recognition for the manner in which he influenced the lives of many people for the better. A number of his proteges have gone on to represent at World Championships and Commonwealth Games, while for others he provided incomparable support and guidance enabling them to enjoy full and happy lives. It is difficult to encapsulate Gus’s extensive sporting life. He took up riding at the age of 8 then moved into a coaching role 20 years later. Personal achievements were not how Gus measured his life but there was one which held a special place in his heart. In 1964, the 12-year-old broke the NSW Schoolboys cycling record. What made this so important to him was that he had usurped his older brother Tom. In an extraordinary feat, younger brother Percy rewrote the books a few years later! Gus’s numerous individual cycling achievements included the NSW Sprint Title, Under-15 Cyclist of the Year (1965) and he was the youngest ever finalist in the prestigious Austral Cycling Race. These efforts demonstrated the young Gus’s ability on the bike, however it was his efforts off the bike which garnered enormous success throughout the years. Despite the individual successes on his bike, Gus had an itch to play league with his beloved Macquarie Blues. He was the goal kicker in an incredible Under-18s team alongside Bob Pilon and NSW CHS

drome preparing cyclists. Gus’s primary focus was to ensure individuals grew to enjoy the sport. “You have to have a balance. As a junior, of course, you want to do well but cycling is only one avenue of your life and I wanted all our cyclists to enjoy their lives, with cycling just one aspect of that,” Gus told the Western Academy of Sport magazine. “The good thing about building a great culture in the Academy or at a club level is that if the athletes are all good friends, they want to come back and push each other to be better. Plus, as a coach, it makes it more enjoyable to see the cyclists having fun together.” That is Gus Dawson; that is the culture developed across many years and thousands of young and not-so-young cyclists. There are countless people who have reaped the benefits of Gus’s wisdom, humour, passion and energy. The legacy has been framed on the old bitumen track at Victoria Park No.1 Oval, on the new state-of-the-art outdoor velodrome in close proximity to where Gus Dawson grew up, and on the many training roads in and around our city. Gus Dawson-coached cyclists are currently competing at National and Oceania Championships and at the Tour Down Under; many others are simply going for a ride on a Saturday morning thanking Gus for introducing them to his two-wheeled world of adventure. EDITOR’S NOTE At a packed St Brigid’s Church earlier this month, Gus’s two sons portrayed the loving father, husband, brother and grandfather. Their anecdotes captured the soul of a man driven by love for family and those he touched in the community throughout his long career as a builder, publican and while coordinating maintenance and construction projects at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The boys spoke tenderly of a bloke who enjoyed playing pranks and loved darts and the Dragons. Vale Gus

Ducks donate to Legacy

By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL

THE Centenary of Legacy was celebrated last year and the Dubbo Ducks held several fundraising ventures. Just before Christmas 32 teams dived in for the revamped Clive Rootes Relay. Regular members were challenged by sporting groups, individuals and some of our brilliant youngsters. Mel’s photos capture the personalities who competed for the prestigious Shield.
