A

delightful collection of artworks ranging from photography, painting, print making, textile arts, pottery and digital arts has graced Dubbo’s Royal Flying Doctors (RFDS) Visitor Experience Centre for the month of January. Fresh Arts Inc has successfully showcased over one hundred art works during this period with many new pieces making their way onto easels once others are sold. The ‘Colours of the Outback’ exhibition is also donating 20 per cent of all sales towards the RFDS and has impressively sold over 35 pieces so far. Fresh Arts Inc is a community group that over the last 20 years has enabled artists to unite in a professional space, and “allows emerging artists to have an opportunity to exhibit”, Fresh Arts member Pauline Griffiths shares. “Fresh Arts exhibits three to four times a year, and also has a number of artworks at local locations. For an annual membership we invite members to attend workshops and exhibitions.”

Jane Hutty has been a member of Fresh Arts Inc for over three years and loves that it has encouraged her to set goals to work towards in her artistic interests. Jane creates with oil paints, and also charcoal and pencil drawings. Her last remaining artwork for this exhibition Francois Peron National Park 1 is based upon drone footage and offers a unique piece for acquisition. Fresh Arts secretary Felicity Rostron has been a photographer her whole life, and now enjoys “dabbling with acrylics and watercolours.” Felicity is based in Wellington and is drawn to landscape photography as well some family and wedding photography. The Fresh Arts Inc RFDS exhibition ran daily throughout January. Meanwhile, a date for your diary: ‘Our next exhibition ‘Timeless’ will begin on March 16 at Dundullimal Homestead,’ says Griffiths. ‘We are looking forward to a wonderful exhibit curated by local Jack Randell.”

February 1-7, 2024 Dubbo Photo News

World Cancer Day: AMY'S STORY orld Cancer Day is on February 4, and serves as an international united voice to collectively raise awareness, promote preventative action and encourage education. Dubbo local Amy Wells shares her story as an advocate for cancer awareness and education. In mid-2020, after moving from my hometown of Dubbo over to the coast, I noticed blood in my stool. Having had internal haemorrhoids removed in the past I wasn’t overly concerned but I decided to find a GP in our new town and get checked out. I explained my symptoms, but he told me at age 36, “You’re too young for it to be cancer,” and suggested it was probably just stress from the move. He sent me on my way, telling me if things got worse to come back and see him. Over the course of the next 18 months, my symptoms did get worse. The bleeding went from intermittent to blood with every movement. The frequency of my bowel movements increased, and I never felt empty even if I’d been to the bathroom multiple times a day. During this time I saw three other GPs, all of whom told me that, “You’re too young for it to be cancer” and theorised that it was something in my diet, or IBS, or ulcerative colitis. I met with a specialist in August,

2021, who also told me I was too young for cancer, but reluctantly put me on the waiting list for a colonoscopy. By the time I made it to the top of that list I was in the process of moving to Queensland. We moved in January, 2022, and by late March I was still having the bleeding and up to 14 bowel movements a day, with the same feeling of not fully emptying my bowel. By now though, I was also experiencing stomach cramping and intermittent nausea. I made an appointment with another new GP. Again, I was told, “You’re too young for it to be cancer” but given a referral for a colonoscopy through the public system. This time I was triaged as urgent and told I would have the procedure within a month. On May 3, 2022, I finally had my colonoscopy. The specialist came to see me prior to the procedure and asked me questions about my symptoms. He also told me, “You’re too young for it to be cancer.” Instead, after a barrage of other testing – bloods, ultrasounds, CT scans, MRI and a PET scan – I was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer, which spread to the liver, at the age of 38. Since my diagnosis, I have moved back to Dubbo, had three major surgeries, 12 rounds of chemotherapy, and 25 rounds of

radiation. Today, having turned 40 last week, I’m in remission. However, because my cancer was found at such an advanced stage and at a relatively young age, I have an estimated 85per cent chance of reoccurrence. As patients, we typically trust that our doctors know best, and go along with their advice. But you know your own body… don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself! If I had pushed even a little harder for testing, I wouldn’t have needed as much treatment and my prognosis would be better, rather than facing statistics that say I will likely pass away before my children are adults. The moral of my story is twofold: firstly, you are never too young to have cancer and, secondly, getting tested at the first sign of symptoms is incredibly important. This isn’t only applicable to bowel cancer, the same applies to a lump in your breast, the swelling of a testicle, or a mole that has changed colour and shape. Never think you’re too young for it to be cancer, never be too embarrassed to speak to your doctor and never be afraid to question the medical professionals if they aren’t taking you seriously. DON’T FORGET:

FIRST MEMORY WALK & JOG TO HIGHLIGHT DEMENTIA ON FEB 11

PHOTO: DEMENTIA AUSTRALIA

WITH various forms of dementia increasingly common in our ageing society, a new nationwide outdoor event to feature the issue is coming to the Golden West. Following the lead of other major cities around Australia, a ‘Memory Walk & Jog’ is being held on Sunday, February 11, at Lions Park, and everyone is invited to attend. “It is the first time we’re coming to Dubbo, and we’re very excited,” Dementia Australia spokesperson Ash Blakemore enthused. “They’ve been going now for about five years now, there’s 22 of these events held in cities and towns around Australia to highlight the issue of dementia,” she added.

Last year, more than 10,000 people walked, jogged, and ran in cities and towns across Australia for people impacted by dementia. The social and health benefits of outdoor exercise for those predisposed to the various forms of dementia, is part of the attraction of this occasion, Ash explained. “We hold Memory Walks because they’re a bit more inclusive, everyone can get involved, and keeping fit is a great way to improve your health generally. Also, it’s way of involving not just people who have dementia, but their carers, family, and the wider community,” she added. There are nearly half a mil-

lion Australians now living with dementia and, without a medical breakthrough, this number is expected to almost double in the next 30 years. Dementia is also the second leading cause of death in Australia and the leading cause of death for women. “New data shows that we now have about 421,000 living with dementia, and about 1.6 million people involved in their care,” Ash said. “If anything that’s increasing, so it’s an issue that can impact all of us.” The Memory Walk and Jog plays an important role not only in funding support, but also in raising awareness of dementia. This year, the group is hop-

ing to raise about $2 million to fund support, education, and resources for people living with dementia, their families, and carers. “In Melbourne, our biggest one, we had about 2000 people taking part last year, with big crowds in other cities; if we had a couple of hundred in Dubbo, that would be fantastic,” Ash enthused. “But we’re not just after participants, joggers and walkers, but volunteers to help out on the day,” she concluded To sign up to walk, jog, or run, or join in as a volunteer at the Dubbo Memory Walk & Jog event, go to: www.memorywalk.com.au

“School refusal” on first day back? Ways to combat kids’ absenteeism

“SCHOOL refusal” the experts call it – absenteeism issues that have plagued education since the COVID-19 lockdowns – with the start of the new education year, one of the hardest times for many parents of kids that simply don’t want to go… While in the past this was seen as a disciplinary issue that simply required putting your foot down; it is now believed to be a far more complex problem. School refusal is usually driven by a child’s attempt to manage overwhelming difficulties related to school attendance, rather than by disobedience or defiance, Monash University educators and psychologists believe. It is equally common between genders and, while it can show up any time, it’s often during transition points into primary or secondary school. “Families and school systems across the world are struggling with school refusal, a problem that can strain family relationships and is associated with significant mental distress in young people,” Monash Psychologist, Anna Smout said. “School refusal is not new, but the COVID-19 pandemic and its significant impact on schooling through lockdowns, has thrown a spotlight on the issue,” she added. Parents, however, should not just let the issue foster and hope that their children will “get over it”; giving-in to the problem, often only makes it worse. “It is important to address school reluctance or refusal; the school environment plays a crucial role in fostering social and emotional development,” Monash Parenting and Youth Mental Health expert, Professor Marie Yap, said. “Attending school can build resilience and confidence, and keeps your child con-

nected with their peers and learning,” she added. The University provided a list of points for handling this vexing problem that afflicts almost all families at one time or another.  Address school reluctance or refusal; support your child’s school engagement so as to minimise potential negative consequences of not attending, such as missing out on education and friendships, and an increased risk of mental health problems.  Understand the cycle of anxiety and avoidance; that avoiding school can alleviate a child’s anxiety in the short-term, but

over time, it’s likely to reduce their confidence and make them even more anxious about attending school.  Look beneath the surface; try and find contributing factors, including any personal stressors, problems at school, and challenges affecting family life.  Talk with your child and listen to them about what they think the reasons are. Have these discussions with your child,

their teachers, and any other relevant professionals, bearing in mind the possibility of their difficulties carrying-over to other settings.  Work as a team to address underlying causes of your child’s school reluctance or refusal; speak to their school and, if needed, a health professional.  Make a plan to work towards your child’s attendance goals; by addressing the issues that underlie your child’s attendance difficulties, a next step is to create a plan to support their return to school, or to increase their attendance (in line with their goals).

Dubbo Regional Council Regional Events Manager Linda Christof said patrons expressed a desire to attend regular dance hall social nights following the success of the 2022 event. “It’s a great opportunity for people to come together and socialise in a relaxed atmosphere; you have the option of dancing to wellknown tunes or sitting back, having a drink and nibblies, and soaking up the atmosphere,” Ms Christof said. “You can book a table with friends, or come on your

DMC General Manager Carl Sciberras said they were excited to be returning to Dubbo following their previous visit in 2022. “The community there is clearly so enthusiastic about dancing together and to be able to facilitate The Saturday Night Social, an ode to a bygone era of social dancing, is an absolute joy,” Mr Sciberras said. “We can’t wait to dance with everyone,” he enthused. FOCUS ON FLETCHERS

Four months in and already promoted

By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY

FILIPINO, Jane Gicale is no stranger to working internationally and has worked in Bahrain and Singapore, but she says the four months with Fletcher International Exports have been life changing. The 31-year-old started out packaging the meat export products, but within a month was promoted to start a year-long pathway toward becoming a Quality Assurance Trainer. “I was surprised because they’d just hired me and a quality assurance trainer is responsible for so many people, and I had to ask, why did you choose me, and they said I had potential, and when I asked what kind, they said, we don’t know, but if we see that you’re good at your current role, then perhaps you can do more.” Looking at a long-term future with the company, Fletchers offers Jane job security and a steady wage, which gives her the peace of mind that the choice to come to Dubbo

was the right one. “I was a waitress in Bahrain for three years and Singapore for oneand-a-half, so my work is not stable, and I think a big difference here is that I’m happy and I feel normal, I’m not being judged, and that’s very nice to me because I don’t get bullied here because of how I speak English,” Jane explained to Dubbo Photo News. Like almost 2 million of her Filipino compatriots who leave their south Asian homeland to work internationally, her Fletchers job means she can support her family back home. “The money at Fletchers is good and this was the dream I’ve been looking for. Working here means I can give all that my sister needs and what I want for my family, so it’s very helpful and a relief actually. “In the Philippines my salary would just go toward paying the bills, but I must pay for my house and my sister is still studying and I pay for that, my brother in unemployed so I support his daughter. My

mother also works abroad, but it’s not enough,” Jane explained. Moving to Dubbo was also an opportunity for Jane to join her fiancé here, and he’s worked at Fletchers on the harvest floor for the past year, so life all round is pretty good, and living in Dubbo reminds Jane of the rural province she’s from in the Philippines. “My fiancé had already told me Fletchers would help us because they’re a very supportive company and when we were looking for a house, Fletchers helped with a reference. “I also meet Roger Fletcher every day, he’s always checking on everyone, I really like him, he doesn’t act like the kind of boss I’m used to; he treats us with respect.” If Jane was to sum up her experience so far, she says you work hard but your pay check helps to complete the needs of your family, and Fletchers staff are very supportive and you just have to ask for help anytime for anything, their door is always open.

Get in quick and upskill: More fee-free TAFE places this year By SHARON BONTHUYS LAST year’s hugely successful FeeFree TAFE initiative, designed to address persistent skills shortages, saw record vocational education enrolments in NSW and resulted in considerable savings for participating students. A new round of funding in 2024 aims to build on the success of last year’s program by offering tens of thousands of new vocational education places to NSW residents. It is expected to be just as popular as last year as students rush to enrol in the fee-free training. Late last year, the federal and NSW governments quietly announced a further 147,400 fee-free TAFE places will be available in this state over the next three-years, allowing many more local people to study for careers in areas where

the economy needs them most. This is almost half of the 300,000 federally-funded places to be offered nationally. The partnership between federal and state governments will see these additional fee-free places funded through a $130 million investment by the federal government. In a joint statement last November by the Hon. Brendan O’Connor MP, federal Minister for Skills and Training and the Hon. Steve Whan MP, NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, the landmark five-year National Skills Agreement (NSA) which takes effect this month was developed under principles agreed by the National Cabinet. It will embed national cooperation and strategic investment in NSW vocational education and training sector. The federal government is pre-

pared to invest $3.8 billion to support the NSW government to expand and transform access to the VET sector, support quality training and implement reforms to address critical skills needs, the Ministers’ joint statement said. Minister O’Connor said: “This is what genuine collaboration and partnership can achieve – real results for everyday Australians – and we couldn’t deliver it without the support of the Minns Government.” Enrolments in last year’s fee-free TAFE in NSW included:  Over 20,700 enrolments in the care and support sector  Over 6,400 enrolments in the technology and digital sector  Over 5,800 enrolments in the construction sector, and  Over 5,200 enrolments in agriculture.

Students studying a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or a Certificate III in School Based Education Support could save up to $1,600, and those looking to build a career pathway through a Certificate III in Individual Support could save up to $1,450. Eligibility requirements are not onerous and do not exclude anyone having undertaken previous study. “This is great news for anyone who’s been thinking of trying TAFE in NSW – it’s never been cheaper to study or train in our state,” said Minister Whan. “And if you’re studying Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, you could save up to $2,000 in fees. Tens of thousands of NSW students will have more money for essentials because of this initiative.”

While supportive, State Member for the Dubbo Electorate, Dugald Saunders MP, credited the previous coalition government for the initiative. “Fee free courses at TAFE were introduced by the former coalition government to incentivise people across the state to take an opportunity they otherwise may not be able to afford,” Mr Saunders told the Narromine Star. “For regional NSW it’s vitally important, as we need to help train and re-train people across a range of changing environments like agriculture and mining, to take advantage of the current and future work opportunities that will emerge.” Prospective students can find out more information about the fee-free vocational education initiative and eligibility requirements on the TAFE NSW website.

Where do you work? Duncan McGinness Vets. What’s your job? I’m part of the reception team. Why do you love your work? I love it because it’s quite challenging and very rewarding. Most embarrassing/ funny moment on the job? I locked myself out last week. I’ve actually

locked myself out a lot. Once I locked myself in a shipping container, and I had to just wait in darkness for two hours until someone came. If you could work for a celebrity, who would it be, and why? Harry Styles… just because he is gorgeous! If you could work anywhere in the world,

where would it be, and why? It would still be in Australia. I’d work in Tasmania because it is beautiful and I love the cooler climate. What was your first paying job? My first job was in retail selling tea leaves. Three words your friends would use to describe you? Friendly,

always up for a laugh and motherly. I am always the ‘mother’ one of the group. How would you spend a win of a million dollars? I’d buy a property. I guess I’ll just keep buying a lotto ticket! What actor would you have play you, in a movie about your life? Zooey Deschanel (the actress from New Girl).

AUSTRALIA DAY 2024

IN DUBBO

By KEN SMITH

Hundreds attended the Dubbo Australia Day event on January 26, 2024, with the hard work of community members recognised during a morning ceremony. Dubbo Regional Council Mayor Mathew Dickerson welcomed residents to the event, followed by Dubbo’s Australia Day Ambassador Sam Cawthorn and Tatum Moore who gave an Indigenous address. During the ceremony seven outstanding citizens were recognised as Dubbo’s 2024 Australia Day award recipients. Molly Croft was announced as the 2024 Citizen of the Year. At just 17 years of age, Molly has faced immense challenges through her battle with high-grade metastatic osteoblastic osteosarcoma since her 12th birthday. Despite the adversity, she has emerged as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many. Molly’s commitment to making a positive impact extends beyond her own struggles. She has shown unwavering determination in raising awareness and funds for cancer research, particularly focusing on sarcoma-related causes. Through initiatives like the Tie Dye Project, corun by Molly, over $700,000 has been raised. Her efforts have not only contributed to vital research but have also created scholarships and opportunities for vulnerable girls to access netball. Dennis Crimmins was announced as Dubbo’s Senior Citizen of the Year and Mia Richardson as Dubbo’s Young Citizen of the Year. Erifili Davis received recognition as the Cultural Person of the Year. Daniel Barber was announced as the Sportsperson of the Year, while Ella Penman is the Young Sportsperson of the Year and Mel Pocknall was recognised for his services to sport. Well done to all involved. Special thanks to the DRC staff who organised the day, and the DRC team who keep Victoria Park looking spectacular.

More retailers, high-tech promotional signage, and an exciting new food outlet, are just some of the changes in store for visitors to the region’s leading shopping centre outlet. “One of our new initiatives, is LED signage going-up on a pylon outside our Cobra Street entrance, just as we speak,” a spokesperson said. “As well as listing all the varied stores that are tenants here, it will also provide information on the retailers and other events at the

centre,” they added. With near full-capacity in 2023, the Mall also recently leased three new sites in store to businesses keen to come on board. This includes an exciting hospitality trader in the process of setting-up shop at the Orana Mall bringing a whole new eating experience to the central west, the spokesperson said.

Orana Mall is also planning some great holiday fun for the 2024 school holidays after the runaway success of a number of exciting kids’ events over the summer break. “We had a great ‘Lego Challenge’ with children encouraged to get creative and have fun as well as learning during the break,” the spokesperson said.

“It’s a new food outlet that’s going to be opened at the site of the old Dominoes franchise.

“We only just announced the winner, and there was plenty of competition, every day we had a big bundle of kids come down and enjoy themselves.

“It’s definitely different, and will bring quite a unique food experience, a different taste to the district,” the spokesperson enthused.

“Something new, something different, that is what we have planned for the coming year,” the spokesperson concluded.

Forgotten hero of World War I: veteran William 'Nip' Clifford Last week’s Dubbo Photo News ran a fascinating story about a forgotten World War I veteran and local sporting identity, William Francis Nip’ Clifford, who was buried in a now-lost grave in the Old Dubbo Cemetery in 1942. Well-known local military researcher Patrick Bourke ran a two-year campaign to ensure that this one Digger received the recognition that was his due. Just recently, The Office of Australian War Graves provided a commemorative plaque for Clifford, in the NSW Garden of Remembrance in Sydney. As part of his research, Patrick compiled a thorough history of this soldier, part of that heroic generation who unhesitatingly signed up for ‘The Great War’, survived the hardship and deprivations of the Great Depression, and then re-enlisted during World War II. Below is a summarised extract of his research, including a touching poem that Nip penned in his local newspaper about the death of his brother Terence with whom he was serving with on the Western Front, before Terence was killed less than three months before Armistice Day. •••

William Francis ”Nip” Clifford Word War I and II Veteran; Dubbo and Narromine Sporting Identity WILLIAM Francis ‘Nip’ Clifford was born on 16 May 1892 at Wallsend, near Newcastle. His parents were James Clifford, a miner, and Bridget O’Connor. William was generally known as ‘Nip’, because of his short height, being about 5 feet 6 inches tall (1.68m). Nip was a keen footballer, in an article by Geoff Mann in the Dubbo Photo News Weekender of February 21, 2013, titled Century of League in the West, which covered the start of rugby league in the Dubbo area in 1913 – known as the Macquarie League and involving teams from North Dubbo, Eumungerie, Gilgandra, South Dubbo, and Wongarbon – Nip Clifford was listed as a member of the North Dubbo side which typically played in black-and-gold jerseys. An earlier sports article from the Dubbo Dispatch and Wellington Independent newspaper from August 12, 1911, reported on a rugby union match between Dubbo and Narromine in which Nip was full back for the Narromine side. In his First War service records, there is reference to him being in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) prior to his enlistment in the Australian Army. There was also an article in the Dubbo Liberal & Macquarie Advocate newspaper, dated April 19, 1941, on of his supposed death that year, in which it was stated that Clifford in 1916 was discharged from the Australian Navy. This article had actually been demanded by Clifford himself, after Nip confronted the editor about an earlier report in the paper on May 4, 1939, claiming Clifford had died in Sydney as a result of injuries received when he was knocked down by a motor car! The 1941 article apologised for how the mix-up had occurred and included details of his war service. The story add-

‘Nip’ Clifford to Narromine for Anzac Day; telling its readers that Nip, who had gone to school in Narromine, very much enjoyed the Diggers reunion. The report also mentioned that his brothers – James, Tom, and Jack – had all served during the war as well. Indicating the huge losses suffered by Australian forces in this conflict, Tom was killed in action, with James and Jack also wounded. Terence Thomas Clifford was known as “Tom Clifford” and Matthew John Clifford was known as “Jack Clifford”. The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate of November 10, 1934 also reported that Nip had convened a meeting in Narromine to set up a club to give tuition in boxing, wrestling, and other pastimes. The article added that Nip would teach boxing and ball-punching with the club to be “run on strict lines, there will be no danger of junior members learning bad habits, and it will keep the lads off the street.” In 1936, Nip was also the Narromine RSL Sub-Branch’s delegate at the RSL State Congress in Sydney, with his likeness sketched with other delegates for the Smith’s Weekly of October 3, 1936. In an interesting aside, the Sydney Morning Herald of December 8, 1937 reported that William Clifford had been appointed as the first resident caretaker at the Narromine Aerodrome; the first country landing strip equipped to provide immediate refuelling. After his death, there were tributes in a number of local newspapers regarding his war service and sporting involvement in the Dubbo and Narromine areas, especially in boxing and rugby league. The Dubbo Regional Council’s records confirm that William Francis Clifford was buried in grave number 1569 in the Roman Catholic portion of the Old Dubbo Cemetery. However, his grave had no headstone and the council states that no exact grave location can be identified from the historical register details. The records that the council hold, confirm that headstones for Donald Michael Hunt and Colleen Joyce Lynch have been listed chronologically before and after his name. Footnote: Patrick added: “I have been unable to find any of Nip Clifford ‘s relatives. On Nip’s World War II enlistment papers, his brother, Matthew Clifford, is listed as his next-of-kin and the informant on Nip’s death certificate.” He adds that Matthew died in Victoria in 1957, aged 70 after having married in his later years, with no children. His other brother, known as “James Bernard Daly” married Theresa Marie Grounds in 1925, but they also had no children with James dying in 1961, aged 77, at Heidelberg, Victoria. Nip’s Clifford’s sister Margaret Mary died in 1901, aged only 15 years from typhoid fever in the Dubbo District Hospital. His widowed mother, Bridget Clifford (nee O’Connor), died in Dubbo District Hospital on January 8, 1916, aged 63. She was buried in the Old Dubbo Cemetery on January 10 1916. Mrs Clifford at the time of her death, had four living children – James, aged 31; Matthew, aged 28; Thomas (Terence), aged 26; William, aged 23; and one deceased daughter. She had lived in Narromine for 25 years.

ARIES: Unexpected circumstances could cause delays. Give yourself plenty of time between appointments to relieve some of the pressure. This is a good time to start your own business. TAURUS: You could be invited on a getaway with a few friends. Nothing will bring you more joy than a change of scenery, even if it’s just to spend some time in nature. This is especially true if you live in the city. GEMINI: You may experience a wide range of emotions this week. You’ll need to sort out your group of friends. Some may not be worthy of your friendship, as they act more like opportunists. Assert your values to earn respect in the process. CANCER: You may be under considerable pressure to make a crucial decision. However, you must gather all the relevant information to make an informed decision. Weigh the pros and cons. Give yourself the time you need. LEO: You’ll be overwhelmed with urgent tasks at work this week. Although stressful, this situation will have a positive impact on your career. Opportunities for advancement may emerge. VIRGO: Even if you tend to be a private person, you’ll find yourself in the limelight. This situation will require you to overcome your shyness. Many people will express their admiration for you, and you’ll show them your gratitude. LIBRA: If your children left the nest a while ago, you may consider selling the family home to enjoy more freedom. If you’re in a new relationship, you may consider moving in together soon. SCORPIO: You’ll be involved in various discussions this week. You’ll expand your customer base and unite your staff. Your guidance and advice will be well received. This will have a positive impact on your finances. SAGITTARIUS: Money is a source of stress for many people. Talk to an expert to identify solutions and give yourself a well-deserved break from pinching pennies. CAPRICORN: You’re full of energy and ready to take the world by storm! You’ll be inspired to take on new things, both at work and at home. This will bring you a deep sense of satisfaction. AQUARIUS: You’ll feel the need to be supported both professionally and personally. You’ll give everything you have to someone close to you. Your generosity may sometimes be taken for granted. PISCES: This week will be full of tension. This could push you to pay more attention to your well-being and boost your physical activity. As a foodie, it’s good for your morale to indulge in a few sweet treats from time to time.

GEOFF MANN

MEL POCKNALL

Mel, DPN’s master of the lens, recognised with Oz Day award! By GEOFF MANN THERE was no more surprised but incredibly-deserving winner than our own Dubbo Photo News sports photographer, Mel Pocknall, when he was announced as the Dubbo Australia Day Awardee for “Contribution to Sport”. IN a career that started all those years ago when he was still at school in Orange, our unassuming super-snapper, has covered every sport known to man and woman. He has taken miles of video – or more accurately, the old Super 8 and other forms of film – from the sidelines, the back of vehicles, or on high, wind-defying grandstands, in his colourful career. Over the past decade or so, the man who never rests has turned his love of the community to digital photography. He is much-loved and, as can be seen from the following citation read-out by Dubbo Mayor, Councillor Matthew Dickerson, before a huge crowd at the Australia Day awards ceremony, well-deserving

of the honour bestowed upon him. “Dubbo Regional Council and the Citizens of Dubbo, acknowledge the contribution made by Mel Pocknall to the sporting community of in our city and the region and congratulate him on being named as Dubbo’s 2024 Services to Sports award winner. “For more than 60 years Mel has given generous service to sport and the community through his photography. “Mel is a former television cameraman who spent decades filming rugby league for TV, as well as taking still photographs for Dubbo Photo News. “Over his long and colourful career, Mel has pulled-on footy boots, strapped-on cricket and hockey pads, slid into go-karts, and partaken of a wide range of motor vehicles and bike carnivals. He has also cycled, swam, and ran, and even mounted a galloper and sat in a harness racing gig, to capture the best possible shots. “He has swung a golf club and tapped croquet balls with his mal-

let, been show-jumping, chased greyhounds, and swam, cycled, and run with triathletes. “Mel often prints and frames the photos he has taken and presents them to the athletes he has captured in full flight. “For the above reasons, Mel is a deserving recipient of the 2024 Services to Sport Award,” Cr Dickerson concluded.” As a colleague and a friend, I have the greatest admiration for Mel. He has an uncanny eye for the moment, often capturing something as it happens, as though he had been given a heads-up that it was about to happen. Mel has made an indelible mark on our community with the support of wife Sue and his much-loving extended family. There can be no more fitting honour than this one awarded by your peers and our Regional Council. Well done mate, and many more brilliant snaps to come from the Mel Pocknall addresses the audience at the 2024 Australia Day awards man behind the lens. presentation. SUNDY BOWLS

Col brings his best to season’s top turn-up Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ THERE were much better conditions to roll the bowls last week, with our best attendance of the year. Of the 46 bowlers on the rinks, Col Cottee brought his best and, with Leo Balstad and John Kennedy, led a one-sided contest against Ros Joseph, Mel Giddings, and John Cole. Capitalising on a 7-1 ends lead at the break, Col and his cohort struck a seven-on-10 to seal a comprehensive 21-6 victory and pick-up team of the day. In another barrage, Rob Pfeiffer and Col Dover got the better of Therese Gaio and Tre-

vor Tink; converting a 10-shot lead into a 22-11 win and second-place on the day. Daphne Dunbar, Frank Armstrong, and Pete Sinclair, showed the “how-to” to Sue O’Dea, Gaye Cottee, and Ruth Shanks, by scoring 14-shots to three in the first session. Sue, Gaye, and Ruth did better on the way home, adding five shots to three, but couldn’t chase them down with a final score of 17-8 giving the winners a nice buffer and Pete Sinclair his fourth win from four starts – an early contender for “Bowler of the Year”. Ron Millgate, Julie Brown, and Anthony Coe, led Sue Armstrong, Steve Kelly, and Gordon Scott by

five at the break, but that was enough as both sides grabbed four ends each in the second part which left Ron and his team up 16-10 at the finish. Frank Bartlett, Eric Satchell, and Tod O’Dea ensured Chris Castlehouse, Ruby Stockings, and Paul Goodstat’s high hopes at the start remained just that after eight. Tod led his side to a three-shot lead heading into the second half, but Chris, Ruby, and Paul, found what was lacking and powered to a classic second half reversal and claimed a 1410 win. Sue McCauley led Chris Strojny and Graham Ross, played an enjoyable first eight against Mary

Perry, Helene Emblen, and Trish Gosper, in her first game back. The latter led by three and felt incentivised, but Graham and his side thought differently. They rolled-in a nice five on end 10 to square the game at 12-all. However, Mary and Helene helped Trish to stop the others from taking advantage and went on to gain a hard-fought win, 18-14. Di Hildebrant and Pete Bennison, along with Al Andriske, scored enough ends to win any game but, when they were only scratching-up singles, it was not a huge advantage. Ron McCauley, Annette McMillan, and Bryan O’Sullivan, were scoring fairly

sparsely themselves but added nine-to-three after the break and won a low scoring encounter by 12-10. Greg Hough, Vicki Hummel, and Pete Ruzans, drew with Paul Martin, Allan Stratford, and Mike Twohill, after the latter team overcame a four-shot deficit. Paul did a good job as the lead for Mike and, during the second eight, the pressure was on for Pete and his team. Their intensity dropped, which allowed Mike’s crew to pileon five shots on the last three ends to level things up at 15-all. There’s no “magic end” in Sunday Bowls. Maybe a thought?

Dubbo Sportsperson of the Year, hot-wheel Danny, breaks 10 seconds barrier at Dunc Gray Velodrome By GEOFF MANN LESS than 24 hours after being named Dubbo Sportsperson of the Year 2024, Danny Barber became the first cyclist to break the 10-second barrier over the flying 200-metre sprint at the 2000 Olympic Stadium. Danny flew round the boards to stop the clock at 9.8 seconds, a feat unparalleled in the 25 years since rubber tested the imposing inclines at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in western Sydney. No doubt during the record run, legendary local cycling coach, Gus Dawson, was smiling down on the young bloke he tipped to be a pinnacle rider for Australia, on the road or around the velodromes. It capped a magnificent year in which Danny was being chased by a number of coaches keen to utilise his power and stamina on the road or for sprints. Perhaps Saturday’s flying exhibition will seal his fate, at least with the Olympics in Paris only months away. Danny has been “an overnight star” since he stepped on the pedals to claim five gold and two silver medals across sprint and endurance events at the National Track Cycling Championships in 2019. He was crowned Champion of Champions, after his incredible efforts that saw him become the first Under 17 cyclist to record a 200-metre sprint in less than 11 seconds; a record that stands today! To list all of the Barber lad’s achievements would take too long; they include the 2019 Australian Road Championships and silver in Under 17 Road and Criterium events after which; three weeks later, he had the Oceania Under 19s Sprint and Kieran titles in New Zealand, at only 16! Over the next two years COVID-19 meant that Danny and his Aussie teammates missed the World Juniors. However, the su-

per-fit athlete dominated domestic competition and, in 2022, was rewarded with selection into the Australian Cycling team. He was regarded as a “Podium Potential Athlete” in the Elite Men’s squad. To 2023, and the list of honours continued to grow:  NSW Elite Sprint Championship  National Elite Men’s Team Sprint  Elite Men’s National Kieran Bronze  Impressive wins in the USA and New Zealand More recently, Danny pedalled past former World Champion and

current seventh-ranked Azizulhasni Awang in Melbourne. Danny started his career as a spright 12-year-old, sharing cycling with soccer, rugby union, cricket, and triathlons, but under the tutelage of master coaches, Gus Dawson and Vaughn Eather. Danny quickly found a home among a cycling cohort that included current national riders, Hayley Fuller (Tour de France), as well as Kurt and Dylan Eather, all of whom are continuing to excite on the track and on the roads. Danny’s parents acknowledged the expert strength training that

has helped Danny along the way from Dubbo gyms, Body Options and Red City. “The training and advice at these local gyms provided a fantastic springboard for Danny to launch into international competition,” they said. Over the past couple of years, Danny has shared his time between Adelaide and Sydney, so he can train full-time and compete. He comes under the expert eye of NSW Institute of Sport coach, Sean Eaddie and, when he comes home for some training blocks, he is fortunate to have the local sup-

port of Dubbo-based former World Championships teamster and another Dubbo Sportsperson of the Year, Andrew Taylor. Danny Barber is a very worthy Sportsperson of the Year; but the sky is his limit. After receiving the news of his award that was accepted by his Mum on Australia Day, Danny completed his NSW Track Cycling commitments, and he is now headed for New Zealand for the Oceania Games expecting to be home to defend his medals in the Australian Track Cycling Championships in March.

ELLA Penman has been knocking on the door as Dubbo’s most acclaimed athlete, since she won her first State p p in cross-country and championships middle-dist middle-distance races; bagging Junior Ju Sportsperson of th the year for 2024. Now, the Year 12 N St John’s College S sstudent, stands on top of the rung after a near-faultless year on the tracks around the nation. Schools 440-metre and 800-metre championships and Australian All Schools 800-metre champion, when she also won the 2023 NSW Junior 400-metre and 800-metre double. The rangy youngster placed fourth, as a 17-year-old, in the Australian Under 20s 800-metre and topped that with silver in the National Juniors in which she clocked a Youth Commonwealth Games Qualifying time. At the 2023 Australian All Schools titles, she again had a brace of silver medals in both the 400-metre and 800-metre events, and again ran a World Under 20 qualifying time. Ella is an exceptional young person; the eldest of six has “led the family” on their quest for athletics excellence. Coached by father, Mark, ably-assisted by Mum, Theresea, and the highly qualified team at Dubbo Athletics Club, she has already ticked-off many hills, but there are still so many more

mountains to climb. On top of her very-demanding training regime, Ella finds time to run the DAC Friday Night sessions, has been a guest coach at Little Athletics NSW clinics held at the Barden Park Complex, and, this year returned to her old school, St Pius X in West Dubbo, to conduct some training with eager young students, including her siblings! Ella is aiming to continue her studies over the next few years while, hopefully, being accepted into the elite Academies at both State and National level. Ella lets her results do the talking for her most of the time but, on Australia Day 2024, the Young Sportsperson, found voice to thank her family, the coaches and friends at Dubbo Athletics and school, as well as everyone in the city who has supported her along the way.

By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL THREE rugby players with links to the western area, pulled on their boots last weekend to train for a place in the NSW Waratah’s Women’s Super Rugby team. Arabella McKenzie, who grewup in Lightning Ridge and is a current Wallaroo; Jacinta Windsor from Bathurst who learned her skills with the local Bulldogs while studying at MacKillop College; and half-back, Martha Harvey from Narrabri with deep roots in Central West and Western Plains Rugby. All three have had an interesting footballing journey. Arabella has been outstanding in recent years, but is not the only Lightning Ridge product. She was actually in the same class as Archer Holz (Super Rugby), and his younger brother in the Academy squad, are also from the mining town. “We didn’t have a rugby team at school, so I played league with Archer and the boys before going away to boarding school,” Arabella said.

Jacinta is a strong centre or outside back who is in her second season with the squad and is hoping to be the next Bathurst Bulldog to make the State team. Marty Roebuck was a World Cup winning back from St Stanislaus College, and Jakiya Whitfield was a year above Jacinta at school before going on to represent Australia in Sevens and the 15s squad. She is now an Australian Jillaroo (League) star. The third player is actually from Narrabri, but Martha Harvey’s background sees her rightly claimed as “a westie”. Her Dad, Dennis was at St Johns and Dubbo High, and her brothers played with the Roos while Mum, Carmel, is a former teacher at St John’s Primary School. Before marriage, she was an O’Connor from Coonamble, but the clan spread from Collie and is well-known in a number of sporting circles. Martha is also in her second year, this time on contract, after answering an invitation to trial last season. The red-haired half is a bundle of energy who hopes to push her way into the final Super 15 Squad in the next few months.

Putting in the hard yards for a bright rugby future, Jacinta Windsor

Martha likes the vocal leadership role that is essential to playing beside the scrum. “I’m like the sheepdogs on our farm, barking at the forwards to do my tackling for me,” Martha laughed. “We are all very grateful for the opportunities we have been given,” she added. The pathways are clear now for Country-based players with Dubbo hosting an Academy and pockets of coaches in Western Plains and Central West towns. “It helps when you have locals supporting you all the way. “Jacinta often talks about Country captains, Mel and Matt Waterford, and Dean Oxley at the Bulldogs, who have nurtured her and I just thank the Narrabri Blue Boars and my family for their encouragement,” she said. By the way, Martha’s brother, Sid, is also in the Tah’s squad competing for a place in the First 15 against Jack Grant from Orange City. Ned Hannigan from Coonamble, is another of our western products vying for the sky blue and green and gold jerseys this year.
