AUSTRALIA’S NATIONAL

Love Your Pet Day

By LANA EATHER

M

any pet owners don’t need an extra reason to share the love with their pets nevertheless Tuesday, February 20, is Australia’s National Love Your Pet Day. It is a day to celebrate the special bond between humans and our pets, and place onus on the importance of responsible pet ownership. There are over 29 million pets in Aus-

tralia with over 61 per cent of households owning at least one pet. During the pandemic pet ownership increased by 10 per cent. Pet ownership is filled with love and companionship as well the need to provide adequate care, nutrition and exercise to our animals. The benefits of adding an extra member to the family are wide and varied with many positive

mental and physical health impacts. Dogs, cats and fish prove to be Australian’s top three pet choices. National Love Your Pet Day also emphasises the concerns regarding local wildlife protection, responsible breeding, and adoption of pets. Keep sharing the love after Valentine’s Day with our furry, finned and scaled family members.

PAGE THREE

Profile ALEXANDER FARRELL Where do you work? I work for Crown Lands in the Tenure Operations Team, doing licencing work. At the moment I mainly work on licences for environmental purposes or community events. Have you always lived in Dubbo? For the majority of my life, yes. I briefly lived in Canberra growing up but have been here ever since. What are your favourite memories of growing up in Dubbo or your hometown? Playing Halo with my brothers, or Mario Kart Double Dash on the GameCube with my younger brother and sister. What do you like to do in your spare time? Hanging out with my partner, my dogs, and playing video games. Do you have any hidden talents or special skills? Being facetious, as I’ve been told (many times). Are you a morning person or a night owl? I used to be a night owl but now I’m more of a morning person. I like getting up early now and going for walks and taking the dogs with me! What pets do you have, what are they and what are their names? I have three dogs: Daisy, who is a glorified house cat; Chloe, who is a goofy clown; and Ellie who takes turns being a cute well-behaved pup and causing minor property damage. What are you watching at the moment? I recently finished watching the first half of season two of Invincible on Prime, and eagerly awaiting the second half! Have you read any good books lately? I’m not much into paper books, but I love listening to books on Audible… very good for when you’re doing chores or going on walks! I typically listen to the Halo novels, which are always great. What music do you like to listen to? Depends on the mood. I like everything from metal to electro swing. I’d say my favourite song at the moment (according to Spotify) is Golden Hour by The Electric Swing Circus. What do the next five years look like for you? Continuing to renovate and touch up my house, maybe even saving up for a new one! Anything else? I feel so incredibly lucky to have met my partner Nadia. She was the missing piece to my puzzle and fills my heart every day with so much love and happiness. I look forward to the many adventures (and dogs) we will have together. Nadia, you are my rock, my joy and my forever.

Tour launch aiming Ready for the road: for record OROC riders

Back on the bike for another great ride: Recent launch of this year’s Tour de OROC charity bike ride in Dubbo. PHOTO: KEN SMITH By DAVID DIXON

L

aunching this year’s Tour de OROC charity bike ride recently, organisers are hoping for a record turnout for the 2024 event. With the week-long ride through some of the most beautiful towns in the golden west and clocking in at around 738km, you don’t have to be Brad McGhee to participate; though he’s coming along anyway! It’s all for a great cause with Toyota again sponsoring this year’s event – we at Dubbo Photo News are also on board – raising funds to help the fit-out of the planned extension of Macquarie Homestay. The two-yearly event has already raised $660,000 for this amazing homeaway-from-home for families and part-

ners that have to come to Dubbo from western NSW for urgent and vital medical treatment. “We had 27 riders last year and we’re getting close, but not quite there yet,” Rotary Club of Dubbo South Tour de OROC Fundraising Committee Chair, Ben O’Brien said. “About 50 riders is the number we’re aiming for, that would be great,” he added. He said that being a top-line road rider is not the criteria for success, but being able to sit in the saddle for hours is. “You don’t have to be a professional rider or anything, you should do a bit of training beforehand; it’s not the riding so much, it’s getting used to long hours on the bike.

“It’s about being able to sit on the bike for long periods, there’s not many hills or rises, so it’s a pretty easy ride around the region,” Ben said. The Toyota Tour de OROC, run by the Rotary Club of Dubbo South, this year runs from the week starting Monday, March 18 and will cover the towns of Coonamble, Lighting Ridge, Walgett, Brewarrina, Bourke, and Cobar. This year again, the event is also being boosted with a touch of glamour, with a couple of Australia’s premiere cyclists taking part; and an old stalwart as well! “We’ve got two top champion riders, two-time Olympian, Sara Carrigan, and Brad McGhee, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics. “Founder of the event, (Dubbo Mayor)

Mathew Dickerson, has also confirmed he’s taking part again; he’s the only rider to have ridden all Tours.” Ben pointed-out that, any money raised, is often matched by State and Federal Government agencies, eager to support the good work of the family hospital accommodation facility. “It’s good to have Toyota back on board, but we’d love to have other Dubbo businesses to put their hands in there as well,” Ben said. “As for the ride, we’re just hoping there’s not too many headwinds, it seems that every time we start, a breeze comes up, and it seems ten degrees hotter,” he laughed.

Dubbo Specsavers’ new chum, Anthony:

“BUSH CUSTOMERS ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!” BY DAVID DIXON

C

ity born-and-bred, Specsavers’ new optometrist Anthony Ly didn’t ever believe he’d make his home in sunny Dubbo… far from the big smoke. Anthony, who grew up and worked while studying in western Sydney, however, credits the Golden West with reviving the love of his chosen field. “I was training for the last five years and then had to do my regional work placement. I could have chosen anywhere, as a regional store, but I chose here,” he said. “That is because I’d only heard good things about both the town and the store, I thought I’d try it, and I had a really good time,” he added. Anthony explained that it was not just the town and colleagues, but the friendly and appreciative manner of his clients, that won him over. So, he said, when a position subsequently came up here, he jumped at the chance. “After I had my placement here, I couldn’t wait to come back, I thought, it has a good variety of work and really nice patients. “So, when they offered me a job, I took

it straight away; if anyone had asked me before if I’d work in a regional area, I’d say, ‘not a chance’, that was until I worked here.” Having worked as an optical assistant for five years while he trained in Sydney, he said the friendly courtesy of people in the bush can be a far cry from what one sees in some metropolitan areas. “In terms of patients, sometimes in Sydney, they come in 10–15 minutes late, and say, ‘Aren’t you done yet?’ There’s not quite the same appreciation of your work. “In Dubbo, though, people are really, really grateful… they are just as happy to see me as I am to see them, and I feel I’m doing good work” he enthused. Specsavers, he adds, is a great company to work with, though he says that, after having just relocated, he is looking forward to the cooler months. “They are a good company to work with, really nice people, and it’s a good experience. “Dubbo is such a peaceful place, I only moved into my place last week; and I’m only now getting used to the heat,” Anthony laughed.

Dubbo PCYC’s new food van: Good Aussie grub for a great local cause By DAVID DIXON

Cooking-up a storm to help our youth: State Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders with long-time PCYC food van volunteer Peter Rendell, who was also a driving force behind fitting out the new van. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

STRAITENED times have made fundraising much tougher for many not-forprofits, but most of us still love a great bacon and egg roll. Enter Dubbo Police Citizens Youth Club’s (PCYC) brand spanking new catering van, which has already proven a hit at local outdoor events. Recently launched with the help of State Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders, the van has become one of this local community group’s main sources of outside fundraising, Club Manager Sonya Raith said. “We are a not-for-profit, a charity, and we simply have to be sustainable,” Sonya said. “The food van’s a good fundraising vessel for us, as it’s hard to otherwise raise funds at the moment, everything’s pretty tight,” she added. The new van replaces a rather archaic predecessor

o canned beetroot in our shops? It ranks up there with the great Cheesybite scandal of 2009! Vegemite, pavlova (that’s only a maybe, New Zealanders claim), macadamia nuts, fairy bread, Tim Tams, meat pies, Anzac biscuits, and chicken parmigiana… While Australia can reasonably claim to be one of the best countries in the world, the same cannot be said of our cuisine. Which is why the sudden disappearance of one of our favourite Australian foods from our supermarket shelfs is such a bitter blow.

A regular Dubbo Photo News reader contacted us last week with this story of calamity and ill fortune: our beloved beetroot cannot seemingly be sourced from our two major supermarket chains. “There simply isn’t any on the shelves at either Woolies es or Coles – I had to go to Midwest dwest Foods to buy some, they’ve got it in big cans,” the reader revealed. ealed. The same tale of worry and nd woe has been found online on such Reddit tags as: “I can’t find tinned sliced beetroot anywhere, and I’m suffering.” While “suffering” is a relative

launched way back in 1987 that has served the PCYC well for decades. “It’s just updated, a little bit bigger, more spacious, better food preparation areas and cooker. “We’ve been doing this for years, we are regulars at events from Carols by Candlelight, new years eve, to NRL (National Rugby League) fixtures. “The new van is operating now, our first event was at the speedway last Saturday night, so it’s already up and running,” Sonya said excitedly. The PCYC is a statewide organisation that was established in 1937 to provide young people from poorer areas with a safe and positive alternative to the streets. Originally run by off-duty officers and funded by the NSW Police Force and Rotary and known as ‘Police Boys’ Club’ they are now largely self-governing sports, cultural, and community organisations providing a range of vital engagement services for

Online explanations, include that the beets have not grown properly due n to water shortages; supply chain issues; problems with ch the rring-pull lids; a cyclone in New Zealand; and a longdecline in popularity of term d old-fashioned tinned sliced the old variety, so beloved on school variety lunches and home-made hamburgers. our young. “We actually have a lot of kids in our local police Orana Youth Command programs, such as our fantastic Friday Night Unites events, where we provide a drop-in centre for local youth,” Sonya said. “This includes activities like basketball, gymnastics, touch football, a free meal, and then we drive the kids home in the evening; there’s about 150 kids there on average.” While the new van, with the moniker ‘Good Aussie Tucker’ has all the advantages of 40 years of kitchen technology, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, Sonya said. “We always need volunteers, that hasn’t changed. People like Peter Rendell, he’s been with us for years, but we always need more,” she concluded. Note: The new food van was purchased through the previous NSW Government’s Community Building Partnerships program, with $63,689 provided for the special catering trailer.

way to the Pacific during World War II – did not originally have beetroot as an ingredient. The website Love Beets claims that its first use on Australian hamburgers was as a “prank” on US troops, unfamiliar with this Australian salad and sandwich classic. Believe it or not, this humble little Aussie battler was also recently crowned a “super-food” due to its high levels of antioxidants, as well as being an excellent source of iron, fibre, vitamin A, C, and a range of B vitamins. So it’s a bloody beetroot-red nose for knockers of the humble beet!

A promising career as meat inspector

By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY

FORMER Mudgee High student, Brad Cockerell, 23, is now a meat inspector contracted to Fletcher International Exports, working with a team of about 14 others to ensure meat prepared for export is disease free and of the highest quality. Raised near Hill End, Brad started his abattoir career after seeing an advertisement on Facebook in 2020 and started working for Fletchers in the boning room before being asked if he’d like to try for the role of meat inspector. Those early years were a proving ground to understanding the business and the expectations of international customers and their country’s standards. Offered the new role last year, Brad jumped at the chance and Fletchers have supported him through the steps toward achieving his meat inspector qualification. “There’s two parts to the train-

ing, and we did the first part through TAFE Queensland. The instructor came down to Dubbo for two or three weeks, and we sat in the training room here to complete that element and do the test. “Then, we had to pass the vet course, where the vet inspects you, to ensure you know what you’re doing, then you can work in your ‘whites’ and then you’ve got 12 months to pass the second part of your TAFE, which are a bunch of assignments.” The health of the meat being processed through Fletchers is of critical importance and meat inspectors like Brad are tasked with reviewing product to confirm each carcass is disease free and fit for human consumption. “We have to look for any pathology, anything wrong with the sheep, then make our deposition and remove the sheep from the process if there’s signs of cancer for example, because of course it can’t be used.” Given thousands of sheep can

pass through the meat processing plant on any given day, it’s no small task to be monitoring the quality of the product. “We must inspect everything, even the offal. There’s seven of us now on night shift and another seven on day shift. “We’ve got two people who inspect the carcass, one person on inspecting green offal and one inspecting red offal. Green offal is the stomach and red offal is the blood and organs, and we’re looking for conditions like ecchymosis, jaundice, or emaciation where the sheep hasn’t been eating or drinking properly and gets skinny, for example. “Depending on where the meat is going in the world, like the USA or Europe, we have to inspect that meat according to the client country’s standards.” Since those early days working in the boning room, Brad has met ‘the boss’ many times and recalls the day when he showed up to the boning floor late for work. “My supervisor asked me why

I was late, and I said I was downstairs in the boot washing room and Roger started talking to me, and every time I tried to walk off, he’d grab me to ask me what I thought about something else he wanted to talk to, it’s pretty good he treats everyone with respect.” One of the biggest surprises he found working at Fletchers is the number of people from around the world. “I never thought I’d meet people from so many places in the world. In my first year here, I was invited to a Chinese New Year celebration and the way they mixed Aussie culture with their culture was really good, and I realised the food you get in our Chinese restaurants isn’t like the food we were ate. It was really interesting,” Brad said. Looking back to the time he left school in Year 11, Brad says he recommends giving Fletchers a go because there’s plenty of opportunities and many pathways to progress if you want to.

School of Rural Health growing rural medical workforce By LANA EATHER THE University of Sydney’s School of Rural Health has enabled medical students to study and participate in clinical placements in their third and fourth year at the Dubbo Campus and the Western NSW area for over twenty years. In recent times the Dubbo Campus has commenced delivering the full four-year degree with onsite accommodation available. The Moran Drive campus is equipped with six tutorial rooms, anatomy laboratory, two learning studios, lecture room and six state-of-art simulation rooms. 2024 marks the third year of the first cohort of students attending the Dubbo Campus, with a majority being from rural areas. Associate Professor Georgina Luscombe

from the University of Sydney’s School of Rural Health shares that research into medical graduate outcomes has demonstrated “we can potentially grow the rural medical workforce by increasing the proportion of rural origin students admitted to medical schools. But also, by increasing opportunities for students originating from metropolitan areas to have those extended placement opportunities in clinical schools in places like Dubbo, Orange and Broome.” Associate Professor Randall Greenberg is the new Deputy Head of the Clinical School at the School of Rural Health in Dubbo and is overjoyed to encourage those wanting to experience life in rural areas. “I came to Dubbo from Sydney over twenty years ago. I worked as a GP in rural

South Coast and Bourke. For over seven years I experienced being a ‘rural generalist’, and then I was employed as part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service for over 15 years, with many years as the

chief medical officer. Our aim at the School of Rural Health is to promote social awareness of rural and indigenous health as well as providing appropriate placements, and scientific knowledge. We are very fortunate that Dubbo Base Hospital offers the bulk

of placements and clinical experiences and is located directly next to our campus.” Eager first-year students commenced tuition this week, many originating for rural areas and empowered by the possibility to study locally.

TREE TROUBLE? TALK TO THE EXPERTS, TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SECOND CHANCE W

hen it comes to trees, it’s best to go to the experts first!

Three-decade arborist Mark Ramirez from Central West Tree Service has seen what can happen when people try and take on too much in their own gardens and properties. “A tree is always bigger and heavier than it looks, and where it falls, can depend on wind direction, disease, its weight, its roots,” Mark said. “We can do anything, except heritage trees, but chopping down your own trees can be a tricky business, and if you’re using a chainsaw, it’s doubly-dangerous,” he added. He said that while most people are aware of the potential risks of traditional petrol-driven equipment, some of the new electric-powered hand-held units, can also be a risk. “They’re marketed as almost like little toys that anyone can use, battery-powered and to hold in one hand, but they’re not. “If you cut yourself, hit an artery, they’re just as dangerous, and it usually happens when you least expect it,” he said.

SUNSET STROLLS TO THE RIVER, TOGETHER.

Mark added that, he and partner, Brett Gore, are often called in on jobs where people have decided to trim or lop a tree themselves, and have realised the size and scope of the project is outside their skill. “They get started, and they know how big it is, it can be sometimes three to four times as big once it’s down, as it looks when it’s standing-up. “We sometimes say to people, ‘how big is it’, and we then say, ‘triple it’, it should always be safety-first when you’re dealing with trees,” Mark emphasised. Hi services also include stump griding, mulching, trimming, with free quotes and pensioner rates. “Some people want it done straightaway, ‘chop it down’ others just want some advice, sometimes we say ‘don’t chop the tree,’ you may trim it you may be able to keep it,’ they’re just after a professional opinion,” Mark said. “We always turn up and do our best, it’s a good job, you get to meet people and solving problems for them sometimes, or you just give them ideas,” Mark concluded.

Walk around our estate, and you’ll meet people who value the things you do; community, comfort and connection. We’re ready to welcome you to a lifestyle designed by you.

Dubbo West Public 1/2A

PHOTOS: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/LANA EATHER

1/2A are learning about the difference between a welcome to country and an acknowledgement of country. They all enjoyed utilising the yarning circles Dubbo West Public have available. All students were very receptive, inquisitive, and respectful of culture. We discussed some differences and similarities between nations. Pupils collected leaves during their breaks as a gift to teachers because the book, “Welcome to Country” written by Aunty Joy Murphy and beautifully illustrated by Lisa Kennedy, mentioned receiving leaves was a form of welcome to country on Wirunjuri Nation. This inspired an adlib art lesson where students painted leaves to create their own acknowledgement of country for the classroom.

Principal of East Coast Supplements in the Orana Mall, he said that assisting customers make the correct decisions for their own needs, is the key to his business. “One hundred per cent, education is the biggest one, helping people choose the right product, is essential,” Jaden said. “Everything I sell is hand-picked, whether it’s health and fitness, sleep and meal replacements, it’s all 100 per cent proven natural plant or protein-based,” he added. Top-line proved products that East Coast retails, includes popular thermogenics (fat burners); body

All these, he said, can assist locals battle the worsening health crisis afflicting modern western societies; issues caused by sedentary lifestyles, obesity, lack of exercise, and poor overall nutrition, Jaden said. “The availability of fast foods at almost any time, menu-log, pre-prepared meals, the problem, is that many of these options are actually cheaper than eating healthily. “We actually have many people in here who have had stomach bypass surgery, lap bands, that sort of thing, who still want to enjoy

protein drinks and the like, and we can help them” he said. He said that anyone who is involved in serious sporting competition, body-builders, martial arts, footballers, track-and-field athletes, can utilise any of his products without fear of contaminating testing results. “Absolutely, the regulations are very strict, and we abide by them 100 per cent,” Jaden revealed. ARIES: You’ll speak honestly this week. However, this could lead to some criticism. Therefore, it’s important to consider being more tactful in certain situations. If you’re in a relationship, a spontaneous activity could allow you to have a wonderful experience together. TAURUS: If you’ve been thinking about buying a property, an opportunity that fits your budget and your family’s needs could reveal itself by the end of the week. If you take your finances seriously, you’ll stop worrying about them. GEMINI: Action is on the agenda! You’ll be on the move and must drive your loved ones around. Renewing certain communications contracts will be a challenge but will allow you to pay the right price. CANCER: You could be suffering from seasonal depression. Fortunately, getting physically active is likely to be an effective remedy. You could even discover a new season sport you love. LEO: Accumulated fatigue is taking its toll on you. However, a visit to a massage therapist or doctor will restore your vitality. If you’re single, some people may lack manners, indicating they’re not the right match for you. VIRGO: Stress could be getting to you. Making a few adjustments to your lifestyle could improve the situation. You’ll be rewarded for being bold. You must identify your goals so that achieving them will become child’s play. LIBRA: Your friends will invite you on an exciting adventure. If you’re in a relationship, you’ll feel particularly romantic this week. If you’re single, someone could show a keen interest in you, especially if you participated in a Valentine’s Day activity. SCORPIO: This week will be an emotional rollercoaster. If your financial situation is troubling you, take the necessary steps to fix it. It may be easier than you think! This will help you regain your zest for life. SAGITTARIUS: You may receive an unexpected declaration of love from someone close to you. At work, you’ll organise an event that will bring together more people than you expected. The changes you suggest will be well received. CAPRICORN: You’ll take the time to finish what you’ve started and kept putting off. You’ll also find an effective treatment to improve your quality of life. In your relationship, small gestures are always appreciated! AQUARIUS: You may face intense pressure at work that requires you to work extra hard to finalise contracts. You’ll commit to regular exercise to boost your vitality or lose weight and will see results quickly. PISCES: Work will take up most of your time, but a promotion could follow. You’ll also engage in exciting hobbies or sports. This will make your social life more active and dynamic.

YOUR STARS

Leo, Virgo and Libra.

THE TOONS’ VIEWS

TIME WARP Victoria Park By Lana Eather In 1876 the Dubbo Council began its plans to turn the future Victoria Park area into a park. The space was cleared, a swamp drained, and landscaping plans were designed. 1V ! ,]JJW¼[ ÅZ[\ JW_TQVO OZMMV _I[ WXMVML QV Victoria Park. However, it was not until the 1930’s that the space was fully utilised. The government supplied money from unemployment relief grants for the local council to employ teams to create Victoria Park as we know it today. These teams of workers completed a multitude of structures including the olympic pool, grandstand, new playing areas as well as a 1000-plant rose garden and improvements to the duck pond area. By 1980 the area comprised of the Rotary Corner, Begonia House, Propagation House, wishing well, kangaroo and bird enclosures - most build by the voluntary actions of the Rotary Club. The Park was initially called ‘Queen’s Park’ with the duck area called ‘Victoria Lake’.

Thrills and spills at the speedway By LAUREN ASHWORTH On Saturday night the local speedway revved up the action with a great turn out. Crowds wrapped around the stadium as the first race began. Many food trucks and coffee vans supplied the people with cool drinks as the weather was extremely hot. Despite an unfortunate accident delaying the races, the crowds stayed on in support. To the thrill of the spectators, the race drivers came out from the pits into the crowd, being swarmed by kids for photos and signatures.

AIF Swimming — Yabbies, Splashers, Platypi, Ducks, and some old Diggers!

By GEOFF MANN THE 61st AIF Western Districts Swimming Carnival played out on the wind-swept waters of Dubbo Aquatic Centre on Sunday with the team from Cobar declared overall winner on the day. More than 80 swimmers converged from Cobar (Yabbies), Nyngan (Dolphins/Splashers), Wellington (Platypi), Dubbo (Ducks), and the Condobolin Diggers, for an event that has been running since 1963. “The first carnival was held in Parkes and included Forbes and Warren, but the changing demographic has seen those towns drop out,” Western Districts President, Bill Fugar said. “Hopefully, it will only be temporary for Forbes, especially with next year’s event just down the road at Condobolin,” he added. The first events, he revealed, were largely of swimmers who had served their country in its time of need. “Initially, there were a majority of ex-Servicemen and then women joined in but, as the original swimmers have aged, there are less and less of the RSL competitors. “Actually, we only had half a dozen or so this year, but we will maybe try and look outside the square and invite those currently or recently serving in the Navy, Airforce, and Army to join us for future events.” All clubs agreed it was a terrific vibe on Sunday with plenty of “friendly fire” across the bows. “Especially between Dubbo and Wellington and Nyngan/Cobar,” Bill laughed. Results:  50-metre President’s Handicap (Ian and Margaret Settree Memorial Trophy) – Ron Lovett (Nyngan) from John Caswell (Cobar) and Henry Willcockson (Dubbo Ducks);  30-metre RSL Handicap – Tom

Gray and David Mexted (Cobar) – both ex-Navy;  30-metre Open – Col Sheridan (Wellington);  50-metre RSL Handicap – Bill Greenwood;  50-metre U/50 RSL Champion – Dave Mexted;  50-metre RSL 50–64 years – David Gibbons (Nyngan);  50-metre RSL 65 years plus – Tom Gray, from Dave Sparkes and Bill Greenwood;  50-metre Open Sprint – Mark Scullard, Jack Allen, and Conor Gibbons (Nyngan);  50-metre Ladies Champion – Katrin Thomas (Condobolin);  100-metre Open Handicap – Judy Walsh (Ducks), Ben Plush (Cobar), and Katrina Thomas. The relays were shared between the Ducks (4 x 50-metre RSL Scratch and Open events), Nyngan (4 x 50-metre 200+ years), and Cobar, who grabbed the 6 x 50-metre, as well as the 10-person title) The fun and friendship continued at the Dubbo RSL Memorial

ONE man was conspicuous by his signature snorkel and mask when the AIF swimmers entered the water on Sunday. Wayne Rich from the Wellington Platypi, was having his first swim in more than three years since a devastating stroke struck him down. But here he was, doing his best, with his Wellington Platypi friend and fellow swimmer, Donna Dray, reflecting on his courageous return to the pool. ‘We all had tears when we saw him stroking his way along the pool with his snorkel and goggles,” she said. “Wayne is an inspiration to all of us with his determination to get on with his life; e is our champion!” she added. The Platypi enjoyed their day out with former local, Ian Matthews, donning his home colours for the annual races. Ian, and wife Pauline, have been living in Parkes for many years but said: “Wellington is always our home”!

THE SUNDY BOWLER

Big-scoring weekend as tricky cross-wind, affects final results Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ IT was a Sundy of big scoring, with otherwise almost perfect conditions, other than a tricky cross-wind with which the 52 bowlers had to contend. Di Cullen, Eric Satchell, and Col Cottee, extracted their best against Sue Armstrong, Cheryl Storch, and Al Andriske, in the closest game of the morning. Nine shots in the first half built a two-shot buffer for Col and his team, although Al’s side stayed in the hunt until a big five on

end 14 by the others. Not giving up, they did manage to add four shots before the end, to go down 15 to 18. Annette McMillan and Trish Gosper also took a two-shot lead into the break against Chris Strojny and Phil Knight in a game of pairs. A five-count on the fifth, followed by a four, and then another quintuplet and a triplet to finish, ensured a convincing 21 to 14 win. First place of the morning, however, went to John Davis, Roger Sherwin, and Jill Fraser,

The “triple G’s”, Gavin Cullen, Gary Huggins, and Graham Ross, proved a winning combo against Jeff Ross, Julie Brownand, and Pete Furner. The G’s forged a 15-3 lead, before heading into the second half. Gavin, Gary, and Graham, were then awarded second place with their 22 to 7 win. Pat Sherwin, Vicki Hummel, and Tod O’Dea, could but wonder when Elaine Hart, Gaye Cottee, and Trevor Tink, chalked-up a five count on the sixth end. Tod’s mob only scored six for the game, and went down 21-6!

Another one-sided result saw John Kennedy, Ray Strawhan, and Pete Sinclair, overpower Di Hildebrant, Frank Armstrong, and Anthony Coe. The trio John, were third for the morning with their 26 to 10 win. This keeps Pete’s golden dream alive – six from six since New Year! Paul Martin, Allan Stratford, and John Cole, turned their three-shot halfway lead into a 22-8 win over Ros Joseph, Steve Kelly, and Ian Humphries. The highlight, was a big six on the way home.

Reg Cullen, Therese Gaio, and Pete Ruzans, also had to lick their wounds after Ron Millgate, Mel Giddings, and Mick Strawhan, recovered from a six-shot deficit to claim an amazing 10-shot win. Hornets sting Cougars in a real T20 Cup final boil-over

By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL

SOUTH Dubbo Hornets pulledoff the stunning upset of the season against competition heavyweights, CYMS, in Friday’s Megahit T20 cricket final under lights. After restricting the Cougars to 8/107, skipper Ed Murray led the run chase with his invaluable 68 continuing a productive season to ensure an unexpected win in the

big game. The bowlers also played their part, co-captain Lachie Rummans with 2/21 combined well with Harrison Quinn, who bagged 3/19, to bring down the high-flying Whitney Cup leaders. South’s title is their first in a number of years, and brought back memories of great teams from the past led by Ian Drake and John Armati in the 1960s and 1970s, and John Colwell and Andrew Zell in the 1990s.

The win is also a tribute to the belief of Hornets’ officials who placed so much faith in a group of youngsters, pouring plenty of time and encouragement into them over the past few years. The CYMS team of champions seemingly did not count on the commitment of the Hornets who fielded well with Cougars President, Marty Nelson, praising Souths batsman Ed Murray who he rated as close to the best batter in the Western Zone in a breakout year.
