Call for blood donors to support people living with cancer, as demand rises

T
his February Lifeblood is calling on Dubbo locals to support cancer patients by donating blood or plasma. Currently, more than 10,000 blood donations are needed every week to support people living with cancer and – with diagnoses predicted to increase by 72per cent by 2040 – cancer patients will need even more donors to support them over the next decade. Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has joined forces with Cancer Council to help boost donations as those living with cancer are currently the biggest users of donated blood in Australia. Cancer Council CEO Professor Tanya Buchanan said as cancer diagnosis increases dramatically over the coming years, so too will the need for life-saving blood products. “Almost one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, and the number of Australians living with

or beyond cancer in 2040 is expected to reach 1.9 million people, up from one million people in 2018,” Professor Buchanan said. “It takes many hands to tackle cancer and, with this in mind, we have joined forces with Lifeblood to help raise awareness that donating blood is a great way to support someone living with cancer,” she said. Lifeblood’s Executive Director of Donor Experience Cath Stone said 34 per cent of blood prod-
ucts are used by cancer patients. “There is a common misconception that most blood is used in trauma and emergency situations, but a third of blood and blood products are used by cancer patients.” People living with cancer often need many transfusions of blood, plasma, or plasma medicines during their treatment. This month 18 members from the Dubbo Nepalese Community rolled up their sleeves to provide life-giving donations

of blood and plasma. Sunsil Bhandari is on his 35th donation: “The Dubbo Nepalese Community are strong supporters of Lifeblood. Each few months we ensure a group of donors are here to offer their help. This month we have seven new donors. It is an important matter because anyone could need this blood. I am so proud to be able to help someone that may need these resources.” ◊ To donate please contact Lifeblood on 13 14 95 or visit: lifeblood.com.au

By DAVID DIXON ENCOURAGING and nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers, local kids are about to compete in an event that is truly a test of the mind, not the body. The annual Western Plains Science and Engineering Challenge is on again in Dubbo, and organisers are calling for a helping hand. This year’s event will also feature a celebration of Indigenous technology with teams asked to recreate one of our best-known examples of Aboriginal engineering. The challenge is on from Monday, March 4, at Dubbo Showground and involves students from a dozen schools from across the district, organising committee Chairperson Tony Geraghty said. “It’s been running in Dubbo since 2000 with just about all the local schools participating at one time or another, though we did have a dropoff post-pandemic,” Tony said. “The challenge is actually a national event, and our geographical spread makes ours the biggest one in NSW,” he added. Schools coming from as far away as Mudgee, Coonabarabran, Warren, Parkes, and locally, Wellington, have entered about 200 students each day for the event – secondary school teams on the first two days, primary school teams, the next two – in teams of eight over a series of mini-events to test their knowledge, teamwork, and creativity. “There’ll be eight activities; all deal

with some form of construction process – electricity, wind power, hydraulics,” Tony said. “They then have a set time and will work as team together to try and come up with some solutions.” The 2024 event also features a section on the oldest technology in the world, that of Indigenous Australians. “It’s really exciting, we’re incorporating Aboriginal science and technology, with a challenge based on the Brewarrina fish traps,” Tony said. “We’re hoping to have local Indigenous people here, to help explain and overlook this activity to celebrate what was ancient engineering and that is still effective in the modern day.” Newcastle University are setting up and coordinating the challenge and a social event on the Wednesday night with a guest speaker from Squadron Energy for the students to attend; though locals are still being sought to help out for the week. “Definitely, we can do with some more volunteers… anyone can apply to just help with setting up activities and supervising the students,” Tony said. “You just need a Working With Children Check number from Service NSW; it won’t be terribly onerous, and they’ll get well fed and watered,” he concluded. Local Rotary clubs provide financial sponsorship, and Rotarians and friends volunteer their time to organise the event and supervise students participating in the activities. Steve’s ready to march for a great cause
Will you join him?

S
teve Bassett is one lucky man, thanks to his wife Anne for encouraging him to have a skin spot checked. That spot, that she had discovered on his back, turned out to be a malignant melanoma. It was late 2018, and by January, 2019, Steve was meeting with none other than recent Australian of the Year Professor Georgina Long, and Prof. Omgo Nieweg, in Sydney at the Melanoma Institute. Steve’s melanoma was serious: it was in Stage 3. He began treatment with immunotherapy at Dubbo Cancer Centre under the guidance of Medical Oncologist Dr Rajat Rai. After six months of treatment Steve was feeling quietly confident but in August, 2019, after a routine MRI scan a tumour was discovered on Steve’s brain. A CT also revealed tumours on his liver, spleen, and kidneys. It was a dark day for Steve. Dr Rai

made immediate contact with Prof. Long and three days later, Steve was back in Sydney where it was found that his melanoma had progressed to a Stage 4. A full PET scan and consultation with Prof. Long and Radiation Oncologist Prof. Angela Hong left Steve with a grim prognosis that treatment would only have a ten per cent success rate, and Steve had possibly twelve months to live. Steve began radiation treatment in Sydney and returned to Dubbo to begin a three-month course of immunotherapy. Steve calls it the “immuno cocktail” which he was given every three weeks. Steve became quite depressed and anxious over the next twelve months after the effects of radiation, its side effects and of course the “immuno cocktails” had left their mark on him. Thankfully both MRI and CT scan results showed a reduction in the size of the tumours. Throughout COV-
ID Steve was unable to have his routine scans which was worrying, but in September, 2020, he was again able to have an MRI and CT scan which gave Steve the allclear. He still continued with an infusion of Nivolumab drug every four weeks. By May, 2022, Steve was able to have his full PET scan at the new Dubbo Oncology Centre, and he was one of the first patients to have a PET scan at the Dubbo facility. To Steve and Anne’s delight his scans were all clear of cancer. “If I didn’t have Anne in my corner every minute of this melanoma journey, I don’t think I would have made it, my darling wife and best mate,” Steve lovingly explained. “I am very happy and very lucky to be where I am today thanks to the caring and very professional doctors, nurses, medical staff, Dubbo Cancer Centre and the Melanoma Institute Australia,” Steve says. His last lot of scans in January 2024 were

clear of cancer, and Steve continues with an infusion of the Nivolumab drug every four weeks. Come March 9, Steve will be marching with Anne, his family and friends, the Melanoma March committee and the many hundreds of people expected on the day. Around 16,800 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, with Melanoma being the third most common cancer in Australia. One Australian is diagnosed with melanoma every 30 minutes. It is estimated 1300 Australians will die from melanoma this year. The Melanoma March committee encourages all of Dubbo residents and surrounding communities to participate on March 9, Melanoma March Day. The event will commence from 8.30am in the morning. Dubbo event shows Aaa trainee GPs the appeal of a country practice By AAA
aaa Offering trainee doctors a look at work and life in the Golden West, a group of GP registrars were recently welcomed to the region at a special event in Dubbo. The reception – which included 23 registrars including the return of three former students from the University of Sydney’s School of Rural Health – is the second event like this to be held in Dubbo. “The aim to promote the local opportunities for rural doctors in the hope they will stay in the region,” a university spokesperson said. “These events have had a lot of positive feedback, and we are now in talks with other regions to do the same thing,” they added. The welcome is designed to showcase the support and career opportunities available to
general practitioners in the Dubbo Region and, hopefully, encourage more GPs to consider going bush once they graduate. “The event provided a platform for GP registrars to connect with locally based doctors,” the spokesperson said. “Attendees had the chance to learn about the diverse opportunities and appeal of rural/regional practice and gain insights into the training pathways chosen by experienced locally based doctors.” The event was organised by the Western NSW Regional Training Hub in collaboration with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), and supported by the Dubbo Regional Council’s Economic Development team.

The gig economy: pros and cons for workers and employers THE gig economy, characterised by short-term, flexible work arrangements, presents advantages and challenges for workers and employers. For workers The gig economy offers flexibility for workers, enabling them to choose when and where to work. It can benefit those wanting to control their work-life balance or manage multiple commitments. Additionally, gig work often provides opportunities for diversifying skills and experiences, which can enhance employability and personal growth. The downsides for workers are income instability and a lack of benefits, like superannuation and leave entitlements. Gig workers often face unpredictable work availability, leading to financial insecurity. Additionally, the isolation that can come with remote and short-term work might lead to feelings of disconnection and limited professional growth. For employers The gig economy offers employ-
ers the potential for cost savings and access to a diverse talent pool. Businesses can hire specialised individuals for specific projects and minimise overhead costs associated with full-time employees. This agility in workforce management allows companies to scale up or down swiftly in response to market demands. On the other hand, managing remote workers and maintaining a sense of company culture might
be more difficult when you rely on freelancers. Furthermore, relying heavily on gig workers can hinder long-term strategic planning and impede the development of a loyal, cohesive team. Whether you’re looking for work or workers for short-term projects or long-term positions, an employment agency in your area can help you find the right fit. Uber as an example Uber’s integration into the gig
economy epitomises the model’s advantages and challenges, offering insights into the dynamic between flexible work arrangements and the need for employment stability. On the positive side, Uber provides significant flexibility and autonomy to its drivers, who can choose when, where, and how much they want to work. This flexibility is particularly appealing to individuals seeking to supplement their income, manage work alongside studies, or balance caregiving responsibilities with earning potential. Some people argue that Uber’s model democratises access to employment, reducing barriers for those who may not have the qualifications or opportunities for traditional jobs, and it stimulates local economies by providing a convenient transportation alternative. However, the cons of Uber’s gig economy model highlight substantial concerns regarding worker protection and benefits. Unlike
traditional employment, gig workers like Uber drivers have been classified as independent contractors, which means they often lack access to benefits such as paid leave. This classification also leaves them vulnerable to income instability, as earnings can fluctuate widely without guaranteed minimum wage protections. There is also an ongoing debate about the lack of job security and the potential for exploitation, as drivers bear most operational costs (such as vehicle maintenance and fuel) without the compensations and protections afforded to regular employees. While Uber’s model offers unprecedented flexibility and opportunities for individuals to earn income on their own terms, it also raises critical questions about the sustainability of gig work and the rights of workers in this evolving economy. ADVERTORIAL
FROM THE BOOKSHELVES VES ] By DAVE PANKHURST, The Book Connection
TIME and again, we encounter individuals or topics that spark our interest, prompting us to think, “I must delve into this when I find the opportunity.” Recently, a number of new publications have emerged to support this quest for knowledge. From our school days, where learning to read was a cornerstone of education – assuming it hadn’t been addressed at home – the expectation to engage with the works of Dickens, Shakespeare and other literary figures was crucial for our cognitive development. For some, this requirement was tedious, while for others, it was a catalyst for a lifelong passion for reading. This varied attitude towards reading persists, with many of us eager to explore more. This article considers several books that fuel this motivation. For those with experience in rural or farming environments, the role of dogs is indispensable. They not only alert us to the arrival of unfamiliar vehicles but also play a significant part in our daily operations. Lisa Millar’s recent release “Muster Dogs”, based on an ABC TV series, explores the transition of dogs from ‘pups to pros’, detailing the stories of ten dogs that have made a significant impact. The book highlights the collaboration between expert breeders, trainers, and their canine pupils to demonstrate the remarkable abilities of these animals in improving livestock health, farm management, and environmental sustainability. Offering insights and tips from professionals, the book promises to immerse readers in the themes of loyalty, resilience, and the close bonds formed between humans and dogs. Heather Cameron’s autobiography “Never Underestimate a Woman” narrates her life in outback NSW. As one of seven children in a family grappling with domestic violence, drought, and financial hardship, her story is one of resilience and determination. Leaving school at 16 to work in shearing sheds, and later contributing to the establishment

We’re eager to explore more of an earth-moving business, her journey encompasses the breadth of rural enterprise and the overcoming of significant challenges. “Sunshine” by Kim Kelly is a heartfelt narrative set in 1921, in the aftermath of the Great War. It tells the story of hope and recovery through the lives of three ex-servicemen – an Aboriginal horseman, a farmer, and an engineer – who come together on a plot of farmland along the Darling River. The arrival of the engineer’s wife, a seasoned nurse, introduces a dynamic of healing and wisdom, offering a poignant exploration of friendship, healing, and the rediscovery of life’s purpose. Geoff Smith’s “Australian Bush Poetry” is a celebration of rural life and storytelling, encapsulated in 227 pages. Raised in Dubbo until the age of 21, Smith’s poem “Dubbo” offers a detailed and affectionate portrayal of the city. His collection continues to explore the essence of country living, affirming poetry as a means of storytelling, entertainment, and the exchange of ideas. Betty Stroud’s “Puffin’ Along With Betty” recounts her solo travels from Afghanistan to Venice and beyond, capturing a diverse range of experiences from Edinburgh to Moscow. Known to me for 60 years, Betty’s family had a business on Brisbane Street in Dubbo, adding a personal connection to her tales of adventure. These books, each in their own way, contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the importance of reading, offering insights into diverse lives and experiences that enrich our understanding and appreciation of the world around us. One of the most captivating accounts of Australian travel I’ve encountered is “Skirmish Hill” by Bill Stanford. Drawing from his experiences working on cattle stations across South Australia, Queensland, and north-western NSW, Stanford takes read-
ers on a journey to the secluded Skirmish Hill, situated near the SA border in WA. This sacred Aboriginal site, which requires registered access, serves as the focal point of a broader narrative spanning 505 pages. The book extends well beyond this single expedition, weaving together family history, rural adventures, and interactions with Indigenous Peoples. Interestingly, the author lives in Dubbo, and this updated edition is enhanced with colour photographs. “The Habit Revolution” by Dr Gin Cleo is a thought-provoking exploration into the psychology of habits. Dr Cleo, a prominent brain habit researcher, delves into why we often find ourselves trapped in cycles of unwanted behaviour and how exhaustion and diminished willpower exacerbate these patterns. Through insights from behavioural science, she illustrates how our brains operate and provides strategies for rewiring them to foster immediate and enduring life changes. The book highlights the numerous benefits of reading, from providing encouragement and knowledge to offering solace, comfort and inspiration. In “The Orwell Tour”, Oliver Lewis guides readers through the life and legacy of George Orwell. Born in northern India in 1903, Orwell’s journey took him from Catalonia to Motihari, Marrakech, Paris, and finally to England, where he passed away in Oxfordshire in 1950. Notably, part of his career involved selling books in a Parisian bookstore. Orwell is celebrated for his influential works, such as “1984” and “Animal Farm”, which prompt profound reflections on the human condition. Andrew Pettegree’s “The Book at War” examines the powerful role of literature in shaping
history. Spanning from the American Civil War to the recent invasion of Ukraine, Pettegree demonstrates how books, writers and readers have been entwined with conflict, serving as both weapons of war and advocates for peace. Highlighting the literary interests of figures such as Chairman Mao, a librarian, and Stalin, a published poet, the book underscores the transformative power of literature. It also recalls the dark chapters of book burnings in the 1900s and the establishment of libraries in the London Underground during the Blitz, emphasising books’ enduring impact. “Confessions of a Bookseller” by Shaun Bythell offers a unique glimpse into the life of a Wigtown bookseller. Presented as a diary, it details the diverse interests of his customers and the personal touch he brings to helping them find their next read. Bythell’s narrative captures the charm and challenges of running a bookstore, from making reading recommendations to fulfilling unusual requests. Richard Flanagan’s “Question 7” is a compelling narrative about the complexities of love and its consequences. Integrating elements of dream, history, place, and memory, Flanagan discusses how our identities are shaped by the stories of others. A Booker Prize winner for “The Narrow Road to the Deep North”, Flanagan continues to enchant readers with his storytelling prowess. With nearly 45,000 titles available, our shelves offer a treasure trove for book lovers, each at a discount off the recommended retail price. We invite you to explore our collection and discover books that resonate with your interests - and... Enjoy your reading, Dave Pankhurst

Recent luncheon to celebrate the Inner Wheel turning 100 IT was a special occasion that was a century in the making. Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Dubbo recently enjoyed a luncheon at Devil’s Hollow Brewery to celebrate 100 years since the charter of the first Inner Wheel Club, the Inner Wheel Club of Manchester, England. Tables were decorated with flags of the world to represent International Inner Wheel as it is today. Celebrations included the 100th anniversary celebration cake cut by President Susan Furnell, and Diane McKeowen, one of the club’s longest serving members. The concept of Inner Wheel began in Britain during World War I, when the wives of Rotarians voluntarily helped their husbands with community service. The club itself was formed on January 10, 1924, when Margarette Golding and 27 other Rotarian wives met in the northern city. The aim was to form a club for women that was based on Rotary, with the objects to foster friendship between the wives of Rotarians and provide community service. Today, membership is based on friendship and service where like-minded women are invited to join. The name the “Inner Wheel Club of Manchester”, and the model and rules upon which the Inner Wheel is based, were there adopted. The emblem chosen was a small wheel contained in the Rotary Wheel… hence the name “Inner Wheel”. he International Inner Wheel is now one of the largest women’s volunon tary organisations in the world ta with more than 100,000 members w across 103 countries. International ac Inner Wheel even sits on the CounIn cil of the United Nations! ci The 2024 International Inner Wheel Convention will be held W in Manchester, in May to celebrate 100 years of friendship and br service. se The Inner Wheel Club of Dubbo itself was chartered in July, 1962, its and celebrated its 60th anniversaan ry in July, 2022. The club meet the third Tuesday of each month. th More information, and how to join, can be found on the Inner jo Wheel Australia website. W

Three tips for selling your home and moving into a seniors’ village
A
re you thinking about moving into a private seniors’ residence? If so, you’ll need to sell your current home. Here are three things to consider to help you make this significant transition as easy as possible..
tenfold.
1. First, find the perfect residence. Of course, the facility must meet your needs and budget. However, you must also like the atmosphere. Don’t hesitate to hire a housing consultant to help you find properties and set up tours. Once you’ve secured the perfect residence, your motivation to sell your current home will increase
3. Finally, the most important thing is to work with a real estate agent you trust. They’ll guide you through every step and help take the weight off your shoulders.
2. Secondly, the process of selling a property can be quite stressful, especially if it’s been decades since you last moved. Enlist the help of family and friends to sort through your possessions.
Get ready to step into your new life with the support of those around you and a trusted real estate specialist.
The Real Estate Chat with Karen Chant from Chant and Co
How To Buy And Sell At The Same Time If you’re aiming to buy and sell properties simultaneously, a strategic approach and planning are crucial to minimise stress and ensure a seamless process. Here’s a guide: 1. Appoint a Selling Agent: Ensure your current property is ready for sale. Select a real estate agent who understands your goal of selling and purchasing simultaneously Discuss your plan with the agent to formulate an effective sales strategy. Your agent may be able to assist in finding potential new properties that align with your needs. 2. Engage with a Lender: Speak to your preferred lender to explore finance options for simultaneous buying and selling. 3. Search for a New Property: Begin searching for a new property, and if you find a suitable one, make an offer based on your finance approval. Notify the selling agent that your purchase is contingent on selling your existing property. 4. Secure Legal Representation: Engage a conveyancer and communicate your goals to ensure that both sales contracts have the necessary clauses for a smooth process. 5. Maintain Proactive Communication: Stay proactive in communicating with the agents and conveyancer Work closely with your lender to understand and facilitate finance options. Buying and selling simultaneously involves multiple moving parts, and clear communication with all parties involved is essential. Have a question? ARIES: You may spontaneously decide to take a training course to improve your job prospects. A revelation will illuminate your path to satisfaction but will also require considerable effort. TAURUS: You could obtain the necessary financing for a project close to your heart. A consultation with your financial adviser should enable you to consolidate your debts and live your life as intended. GEMINI: Tidying up at home could help you clear your head. Before talking about separation, take the time to discuss certain subjects. Deciding on impulse could leave you with bitter regrets. CANCER: Before presenting any files and proposals at work, make sure you refine them to ensure they get accepted. You’ll inevitably want to renew your wardrobe to reward yourself for your success. LEO: You’ll suggest interesting projects to your friends. Dedicate time to developing your creative skills in a field you’re passionate about. Self-confidence is the key to achieving success and accomplishing great things in the near future. VIRGO: You’ll meet inspiring people who will enrich your social circle and deepen your spirituality. A professional or personal opportunity could make you consider moving. LIBRA: A dose of sensitivity and affection will be crucial in your relationship to avoid misunderstandings. Open communication will help improve things, but financial confusion could arise. SCORPIO: An action-packed week is on the horizon! If you love to travel, now might be the perfect time to revive a plan that was previously postponed due to circumstances that no longer apply. Even a short solo getaway could create some unforgettable memories. SAGITTARIUS: If you have an artistic soul, your overflowing imagination will enable you to create an exceptional piece of art. Adopting a lifestyle that aligns with your aspirations will bring balance to your life. When you go with the flow, everything will fall into place. CAPRICORN: A moment of relaxation and rejuvenation would be welcome. Explore your artistic or spiritual talents that seem to want to emerge. Getting involved with those who are less fortunate could also be an inspiring option. AQUARIUS: You’ll expand your circle of friends by having a more active social life, even if it’s just through social media. Joining a gym with friends to try out a new sport could also be a great option. PISCES: You’ll be full of joy and optimism this week. This contagious state of mind will spread to those around you. At work, you’ll complete your tasks more quickly and support those who need help. Your extra efforts will be rewarded.

Could it be the old grandstand at Dubbo Showground? Thanks in advance!” 0M UIa JM ZQOP\ IJW]\ \PM aMIZ" the mauve car with the white roof and white-walled tyres, second from the left, is a Holden EK (released in May 1961); easy to identify with its distinguishing »[PIZS ÅV¼ \IQT TQOP\[ <PM ÆIZML LZWX _IQ[\ [_QVO LZM[[M[ 2IKSQM 3MVVMLa [TIKS[ and bob-cuts of the young ladies, and the button-down, Brylcreamed pre-Beatles look of the gents, seems \W []XXWZ\ \PQ[ \PMWZa The incongruity? Dubbo and Forbes Dragons combine for Lunar New Year By GEOFF MANN IT’S the “Year of the Dragon”; and the dragons were certainly out in force to celebrate the occasion! Last weekend, the waters of Darling Harbour were a swirling mass of foam as 80 dragon boat crews from all over Australia paddled it out to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Local competitors, the Outback Dragons from Dubbo, were bolstered by a team from the Lachlan Dragons who normally paddle on Lake Forbes, but who brought home a silver medal and trophy as the second fastest Regional Team at the meet. “We had such a great few days in Sydney,” National Masters champion, Rhonda Betts, said. “Our combined crew has been training on each other’s water for a few months, and we just gelled on the weekend,” she added. The Outback Dragons finished 20th out of 64 teams overall. “That is such a top effort,” Rhonda said. “We have to travel to train and

compete, while most of the coastal teams and those from Sydney and Canberra, have a much easier time getting together,” she explained. Other team from the western
of the mountains included the Orange City Colour Dragons, as well as paddlers from Mudgee, Bathurst, Parkes, and Narrabri being sprinkled amongst other crews.
The Dragons continue to train during the week and on Sunday mornings, with plenty of regional, State and national events throughout the year. Check-out the Outback Drag-
ons FaceBook page for contact details, or just head-on down to Sandy Beach, South Dubbo, and join the group on the Macquarie Wambul River.
THE SUNDY BOWLER
Unbeaten Pete finally meets his bowls match! Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’ ALTHOUGH storms were swirling all around, in Dubbo itself it was a nice morning to roll a bowl or three. In big bowls news on the day, Pete Sinclair’s unbeaten run finally came to an end. The six-inrow run finished when Pete and Alan Stratford went down, leaving Col Dover as the only unbeaten bowler on the day. In other games, Col, Jasmine Bourke (a Nyngan gal); and Greg Brown, played Di Hildebrandt, Therese Gaio, and Trish Gosper. Despite trailing by four shots at the break, Jasmine, Greg, and Col, “owned the next eight”. They pocketed a foursome and a triple,
to boost their score to 17, leaving Trish and her team stranded on nine. Leo Balstad, Cheryl Storch, and Al Andriske, in tier game shared eight ends apiece with Paul Martin, Ruby Stockings, and Anthony Coe. However, Al and his crew were fired-up from the very first end with a quad to lead by that margin at the halfway mark. Paul, Ruby, and Anthony then stepped-up with three shots for ends nine and 10, but dropped a second triple and four, leaving Leo, Cheryl and Al to win 19-13. A foursome was a good opening play for John Kennedy, Pete Bennison, and Brian Jones, but they trailed Doc Livingston (back
after a few weeks), Pete Furner, and Mick Strawhan by one after eight. The game opened-up during the second half – nine-all 9 on end 10; 12-all on end 13, before a triple and a single on the last couple of ends clinched, a tight 16-15 win to John, Pete and Brian. Coming-off the massive win the previous week, Roger Sherwin enjoyed playing with Gordon Scott. The pair took seven of the first eight ends against Al Stratford and Ricky See, and five of the next in a master class win 25 to 6, easily enough to be awarded first place for the morning. It’s been a poor start to the bowls season for Pete Ruzans, struggling to win a game. Last

week, he was buoyed with the good help of Julie Brown and Helene Emblen, but excellent bowls by Ross Pharo and Ros Joseph with Trevor Tink the skip, ensuring “Pistol’s” run of outs continued. The heads were tight, accuracy was the key, but Trevor and his side got better the longer the game went on, and they received second place after their 25-8 victory. Gary Huggins, Ruth Shanks, and Phil Knight powered their way through the first eight ends leaving Chris Strojny, Ray Strawhan, and Pete Sinclair stunned. They added seven more shots to four on the way home to earn a strong 21-8 win and third place for the morning.
Chris Castlehouse, Vicki Hummel, and skip Cooper McMullen ran-away with their game against Daphne Dunbar, John McKenzie, and Ian Humphries, taking six of the first eight ends and five of the second to win 14 shots to six. John Davis, Frank Armstrong, and Col Cottee, had the determination; Ron Millgate, Steve Kelly, and Graham Ross had the drive! A six on end three, showed drive outbid determination in the first section! Ron, Steve, and Graham, led 10-5 at the break; but determination was on show after as John, Frank, and Col pulled-off a triple on the last to snatch a 13all draw! All in all, another great Sunday’s bowling!

Dubbo grabs the Plate before the big storm! By GEOFF MANN Photos by MEL POCKNALL AS weird-looking clouds swirled and lightning bolts flashed menacingly in the southern sky, Dubbo conquered their Lachlan challengers to clinch the Western Zone Plate cricket final on Sunday. Chasing 177 for victory, the locals made it without the need for the Duckworth-Lewis revised target needing to be applied, mainly thanks to youngsters Rudy
Peet (South Dubbo) and Eric Herbert (Macquarie), who both peeled-off impressive half-centuries. In the bowling department, Kane McFarlane had earlier picked up 4/21 to restrict Lachlan to only 176. This was Kane’s best performance of the season, and came in spite of Lachlan Skipper, Brett Tucker’s defiant knock that yielded 83 runs. Dubbo now holds both the Cup and Plate, while Gilgandra easily won the Western Zone Small Towns Plate.

A heavy storm on Thursday night made it tough for teams batting on Saturday on what proved to be sticky local wickets. On day one of the second last round before the finals, teams padding-up first, had to work hard for their runs. This gave the fast bowlers and fielding sides the edge in most of games played locally. CYMS speedster Bailey “Buzz” Edmunds enjoyed just such luck, routing RSL Colts for just 105. Buzz took a chainsaw to the Colts 11, finishing with red-hot figures of 7-52 in a warning to other teams with premiership matches ahead. Marty Jeffrey (46) provided the only resistance with CYMS resuming on 2/60 next Saturday. Newtown were also smiling when they dumped Macquarie for a modest 115, but these turned to frowns all-round later in the day when, by stumps, they themselves had slumped to 5/35. Ricky Medway was a beacon for Macquarie, scoring two-thirds of their runs with a fine 67. Meanwhile, Rugby defied Souths to reach 243, thanks mainly to half-centuries from Jack Kempston and Ben Wheeler and handy contributions from several others. Lachie Rummans was best of the South’s bowlers, finishing with 5/35.

TRIUMPH IN TOWNSVILLE
Coach and hooker celebrate All Stars’ victory By GEOFF MANN
LOCAL rugby league coach, Jess Skinner from Trangie, is on top of the world, after guiding the Indigenous All Stars to a 26-4 win against the Maori Ferns to regain the Fanning-Murphy Trophy in Townsville on Friday night. The former Trangie Central School Principal, who is now the NRL Pathways Development Manager, became the first women to coach the All Stars in the annual clash celebrating rugby league’s strong Indigenous representation. However, her triumph has been
no overnight success, she was eventually handed the top job after spending three years as an assistant. “I am so proud of what we achieved,” a buoyant Jess said. “The whole week in camp, was about bonding and learning and sharing our culture so to bring it all together on the field was just incredible,” she smiled with pride. Jess was especially proud of young local hooker, Taneka Todhunter, who came-on from the bench. “Tanika is a true-blue country kid; she has come from Western Rams Under 17s, to earn a three-
year NRLW contract with the Roosters. “Like all ‘bushies’, Tanika can thank her grandparents who have travelled with her to Sydney sometimes two and three times a week, just to train and follow her dream.” Jess says Tamika deserves all the good things she has worked for, especially as she has to work to pay her way. “Tam is a construction worker; like all of our female players, there is no full-time professional positions at present but, with her energy and increasing level of strength, there is no doubt she
will be there soon,” jess predicted. “The NRLW is growing in status and the number of teams, but it is still a little way off; working outside of the game, is great for her physically and mentally.” Jess is also chuffed that the Castlereagh League has introduced the Jessica Skinner Trophy for the local League Tag competition. “It is a real honour. “I’m a Trangie girl, I’ve played League Tag and tackle for the Castlereagh and, to be around now as new players are emerging across the ages, is very heartening.” Jess now works full-time with the NRL, but says she will return
to teaching at some stage. “I miss the interaction with the kids and mentoring young teachers coming through. “I keep my hand in at the schools, and will return to my vocation once I have achieved a couple more goals,” Jess said. Coaching the Indigenous All Stars to a win on Friday night was one tick; taking the NSW Gems to the Nationals in a few weeks will be another, but she admits that there is a bigger lure for the rugby league fanatic. “I am aiming for the 2026 World Cup with the Jillaroos!”

Group 10 beats Group 11 - as Western legends of ’74 hold their golden jubilee

Group 11 retains Western U18s Shield
NEARLY 50-years after the most famous bush footy win of all time – the legendary Western Division victory in the first-ever mid-week cup – Group 10 has regained the Western Rams rugby league mantle, after a hard-fought 16-6 win over Group 11 at Wellington on Saturday. The home Group had, however, earlier won both Women’s League Tag by 12-10 and the Under 18s by 24-6, in what proved to be an excellent early season hit-out for all the local representative teams. In other games, in Parkes on Sunday, the Westerners had a powerful win over Monaro in the Andrew Johns Under 16s Cup, while the Under 18s went down in a disappointing match against the southerners. Meanwhile Brad James’ Castlereagh team competed strongly, before going down against both Group 10 and Group 11. In coming games, the Western Rams will play Northern Tigers on Saturday, March 2, with a moving tribute to the famous 1974 AMCO Cup winning team, who are reuniting for their golden jubilee. That iconic victory of Western Division over Penrith in the final of the first-ever televised mid-week cup by 6-2 – including contributions of local heroes like “TV Ted” Ellery, the coach, illustrious former St George and Kangaroo winger, Gilgandra’s very-own Johnny King, and captain Paul Dowling – will no doubt all be relived at the event! Group 11 proved too strong under the leadership of CYMS playmaker Jordan Porter seen with Group 10 Chair Linore Zamparini and Bob Walsh, Group 11

SPORT Rudy drives generational change BY GEOFF MANN SOUTHS opener Rudy Peet stepped up to open for the Dubbo 11 against Parkes on Sunday and walked off with the Western Zone Plate. Rudy’s dad Russell usually batted at the other end of the order but steamed in with the ball in South’s halcyon premiership years in the 90s. Rudy and teammate Max Richardson, son of Richie, are aiming to add to their dad’s South Dubbo trophy cabinet in years to come. PHOTO: MEL POCKNALL
