EMMA FAIRBANK

Where do you work? Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Have you always lived in Dubbo? I grew up in Cobar but I think I can class myself as a Dubbo local after 21 years.

What are your favourite memories of growing up in your hometown? How quiet it was and how freerange we were, as long as you were back by sunset it was all good.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Sewing is a favourite and something I would like to teach my kids.

Do you have any hidden talents or special skills? I do a somewhat passable Irish slip jig.

Are you a morning person or a night owl? I would like to be a night owl but have accepted my fate as morning person.

Do you have any pets? What are they and what are their names? I have two dogs, Bonnie the sheltie and Saoirse the bull terrier x whippet, and seven silkie chickens who do all have names but they never answer to them.

What are you watching at the moment? The live-action remake of Avatar The Last Air Bender. The cartoon was great and the live-action has not disappointed.

Have you read any good books lately? I’m working my way through Terry Prachett’s Discworld series…10 down, 21 to go.

What music do you like to listen to? I do love a good sea shanty or anything with a bit of a Celtic spin.

MARCHING ON FOR KOKODA

Beverly Fearne would one day love to walk the Kokoda Track but, for now, she’s doing the next best thing.

Bev is one of hundreds of Australians replicating the distance of the famous route by Australian troops who held the might of the Japanese Imperial Army at bay during World War II, for a cause close to her heart.

“March On” involves committed Australians completing the distance of the famous trail this month, to raise awareness for the debilitating condition – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – suffered by many of our veterans.

this!’,” she laughed.

He commitment, she reveals, also has a personal element to it; one very near to home.

“My daughter, Harmony, is also in the Cadets as a Lance-Corporal; she wants to join the Army as a psychologist, so that she can treat conditions like PTSD,” Beverly explained.

“it’s such a good cause, I pretty much just signed-up and started a bit of walking and health work to get me prepared.”

be really cool, inspiring; we had planned to do it, but Harmony got a bung knee, so we won’t be doing it this year.

“This is the first time I’ve done something like this, and I’m loving it, it’s been great,” she enthused.

Local RSL Sub-Branch President, Shaun Graham, who himself served, said that the Dubbo office also does important work locally for veterans.

“We provide a fair bit in regards for mental well-being; for mental health support in this area,” Shaun said.

Having been a Lieutenant in the local Army Cadet Unit, ACU 235, Beverly wanted to achieve something tangible for the thousands who served their country, but who now pay a terrible personal cost.

Now approaching midmonth, she has been surprised at how much she has enjoyed the challenge.

Dubbo Black Dog Ride 1 Dayer head out on the highway

DUBBO ‘Black Dog Ride 1 Dayer’ is on this Sunday at Victoria Park from 7am.

Coffee and Rotary breakfast vans will be available for the riders and the public are also most welcome to attend.

The ride will commence at 9.30am, which is quite spectacular to watch.

Dubbo ‘Black Dog Ride 1 Dayer’ has attracted 150-plus riders from Sydney the Central Coast, Moree,

Coonabarabran, Walgett, Coonamble, Gulargambone, Armatree, Gilgandra, Bourke, Nyngan, Warren, Narromine, Parkes, Forbes and Peak Hill, just to name a few. Also on site will be a number of mental health and road safety stands in the park.

The ride finishes at the Western Star Hotel, Dubbo, with lunch, raffle draws and some conversation from around 12:30pm.

Please see their Facebook page to register and for more information.

“Initially, I signed-up for just the outward trek, which is 96km, but now I think I might be able to do the return journey as well, about 192km.

“We do some important work at the coal-face for many veterans, non-professionally and non-clinically, we also facilitate applications to Veterans Affairs, to make sure the outcome is beneficial,” he added.

“I have a very good friend who was in the Army for 10 years, and they did it, and then I read it about in Dubbo,” Beverly said. “I’m the most t person in the world, and I thought, ‘you know what? I’m going to do

“I do mornings and afternoons, more than 70km so far, so we’ll see how I go… my goal is to raise about $1000; I’m at about $300 already,” Beverley added.

Her aim, she adds, is to one day complete the journey that covers the 2500-metre mountain range in Papua New Guinea through which the Australians, many part-time militiamen, beat back the until-then undefeated Japanese Army.

“I would love the do the Kokoda Track itself, that would

With veterans in the region covering from World War II, through to Korea and Vietnam, to the two Gulf Wars and Afghanistan, they’re plenty busy at the Sub-branch.

“There are close to a thousand veterans in the local government area, including the oldest living Spitfire pilot, Ray Winslow,” Shaun said.

“They can just drop-in to the Sub-branch at 79 Bultje Street, Monday to Friday, from 10am to 2pm, we’ll be there,” he concluded.

For more information, contact Shaun on 0447 272 230.

DUBBO is set for an exciting health upgrade as principle physiotherapist, Poonam ‘Pia’ Hingorani, brings her internationally acclaimed physiotherapy services to her newly opened clinic, Infinity Physiotherapy Services, located at 6/77 Myall Street in Dubbo where she celebrated the Grand Opening Ceremony on the 8th of March 2024.

To commemorate the opening of her physiotherapy clinic, Pia has chosen to donate the generous sum of $2001 to Little Wings Organisation, who fly rural children to bigger cities for urgent medical care. She is supporting this cause because the organisation is dear to her heart having known 2 families with children that lost little ones to illnesses that potentially may have been treated if this service had been available to them.

Pia says that “These were lives that could have contributed to the betterment of this world to make it a better place. A child’s body is very delicate and requires utmost attention to even the smallest of infections, it’s so crucial for children to get the urgent medical attention they require and Little Wings is doing such an incredible job with that.”

Tegan Ferguson representing Little Wings was on hand to receive the wonderful donation and Dubbo Mayor Mathew Dickerson, was also in attendance.

From a young age Pia has always cared deeply for the health and well-being of those around her which led her to become a physiotherapist. She eschews those values in her commitment to community health and she continually strives to deliver top-tier physiotherapy care to every one of her clients. Her newly established state-

of-the-art clinic reflects her vision, offering exceptional service in a welcoming environment, as reflected by her positive client reviews.

Originally from India, Pia arrived in Australia in 2015 to complete her Masters degree at the University of Queensland after having worked as an accredited physiotherapist in Singapore. For over a decade, Pia honed exceptional client service skills at one of South East Asia’s elite private hospitals, garnering awards “for outstanding service” and working with a star-studded client list.

While completing her specialist degree in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, at the University of Queensland, she also worked at a private clinic in Broken Hill before settling in Dubbo, where she is now happy to call home.

With over 20 years experience, Pia has a vast wealth of expertise, including complex pain management and rehabilitation. One unique asset in Pia’s skill-set includes vertigo management of which she is one of a handful in the country who possess this unique capability and thus far, she has had a 100 percent success rate with healing vertigo in her clients.

The branch comprises of a dedicated team of volunteers that fundraise to provide financial assistance to people that are undergoing cancer treatment. All the monies raised stay within the local area to assist locals.

Dubbo Branch Executive member Mike Blake praises the commitment of the hundreds of volunteers involved in Can Assist.

“Everyone adds their bit to helping fundraise. It is a massive undertaking to organise our annual Garden Day each year. It is our major fundraising event, and it a wonderful occasion.

”We have four beautiful gardens to experience with many stalls and morning tea and lunch available.”

This year’s Can Assist Garden Day will be Sunday 4th May 2024 from 9.30am to 4pm. Tickets will be available on the day from the garden gates or beforehand from 123tix.

This centre is already making a monumental difference for patients and their families, who can now undergo life-saving treatment much closer to home. Clinicians at the Western Cancer Centre have stated the lack of affordable accommodation is critical to the productivity of the WCC, and that there is a real risk of patients not commencing or limiting treatment options if appropriate and affordable accommodation options are not available in Dubbo for the duration of their treatment.

Geurie ladies knit up a storm ...a ni li “yarn”

DOING their bit to help those less fortunate; a group of local women are knitting up a storm.

Dedicated ladies from the Geurie Craft Group recently handed over crafted items made with love and care over the past 12 months.

Charities supported include the Orana Support Group, Macquarie Home Stay, Wellington and Dubbo Ambulance Services, and Little Wings, spokesperson, Colene Forster explained.

The handing over of the knitted items such as blankets, beanies, and soft toys also normally includes a presentation by a representative of the non-profit of the good work they do in the local community, she revealed.

“When we donated to Orana Support Service we were lucky enough to have Emily, on behalf of Tina Reynolds, come and inform us of their great challenges and work that they do. After a cuppa, we helped Emily load her car with our donations,” Colene said.

“Rod Crowfoot from Macquarie Home Stay also came to pick up our donation; this time Rod enlightened us on the new project of the building additions going up and

the needs of their clients.

This was very helpful and has inspired us to continue with our donations during 2024,” she added.

For practical purposes, the ladies support local charities for whom driving out to pick up the items is less of a burden.

“Orana support helps refugees, sufferers of domestic violence… there’s a women’s refuge, a men’s refuge, and with they support large number of homeless people.

“These people often go the refuge with nothing; there was a lady who went in the morning and had a baby in the afternoon, and had nothing, we provided baby clothes and blankets that the girls had knitted.”

Colene said that the group provide items to order, depending on the need of the charities they support. Each donation consists of no less than 30 knitted animals, teddies, winter beanies, scarfs, baby clothes, and blankets.

“Macquarie Home Stay, for instance, supports families coming down all the way from the border and out in western NSW, who need to go to hospital here,” Colene said. “So, we provide, beanies for those being treated with chemotherapy, knee rugs, and blankets for

children.”

The group could not do their good works without kind donations of yarn and other materials for their work.

“All these toys cannot be made without wool, and we would like to thank the ladies in the community that have donated. Of course, if anyone else wants to donate to the group, that would be fantastic.

“Plus, we wish also thank the ladies that have also knitted teddies and donated them to our growing stockpile.”

Like many volunteer organisations in the community, however, no one is getting any younger, and more help is always appreciated.

“All the ladies are over 70; we get together once a week and it’s a social day for us, many of whom live on their own, our ladies are now known as ‘The Nana Knitters’, as they continue to keep-on, keeping-on.

“We are very fortunate to be able to meet every Wednesday at Geurie Bowling Club for a day of knitting, sewing, and chatter, so if you are crafty and would like to join us, come along – we start around 9.30am and go to 2pm, or call me on 0400 422 335,” Colene concluded.

I ndigenous dance is one of the world’s oldest creative forms incorporating practices, values, and themes going back millennia, with a local performer starring next week in a visiting production.

Dubbo girl Amberlilly Gordon is a member of Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing arts company, Bangarra, who are presenting Frances Rings’ powerful production of Yuldea, at Dubbo Regional Thea- tre and Convention Centre (DRTCC).

Yuldea explores the abrupt moment the traditional life of the Anangu people collided with the industrial ambition of a growing nation in South Australia’s

In Yuldea, the ancient waterhole Yooldil Kapi connected important trading routes and dreaming stories that crossed through the site for thousands of years. As a result of the impact of colonisation on the permanent waterhole, though, the water quickly ran dry.

Yuldea is Rings’ first work as Artistic Director of Bangarra and represents a deeply personal ceremonial af firmation of history and heritage, inspired by her family’s connection to the area, Dubbo’s Regional Events Manager Linda Christof said.

“Yuldea is a fantastic production, and we look forward to welcoming the

Bangarra Dance Theatre to the DRTCC stage,” Linda said.

“One of the company dancers Amberlilly Gordon is a Dubbo local and proud Wiradjuri and Ngemba woman,” she added.

It’s been a long journey for Amberlilly who, in 2022, was promoted to the company’s Youth Programs Trainee before joining the performing company as the 2023 Russell Page Professional Development Scholarship recipient.

“Amber started her journey in dance at age 14 in Dubbo with Bangarra’s ‘Rekindling’ program.

“This year, she performs with Bangarra as a full-time company dancer,” Lin-

da revealed.

Bangarra Dance Theatre is performing on Saturday, March 16, at 7.30pm; book online at: drtcc.com.au, drop in to the Box Of fi ce or call 6801 4378.

As part of DRTCC’s commitment to community engagement and investing in local performers, the theatre is also hosting a free dance workshop for school students that is being facilitated by Bangarra company dancers.

Because the Dubbo Region is the best place to build your career

DUBBO WORKS is highlighting the excellent career and learning opportunities the Dubbo region offers. DUBBO WORKS is a community-building initiative brought to you by Fletcher International Exports and Dubbo Photo News. To contribute ideas, email dubboworks@dubbophotonews.com.au phone 6885 4433.

Joaquin is kicking goals at Fletchers

THERE’S an excellent chance while Joaquin Munoz is working in the load out section of Fletcher International Exports, he’s dreaming about soccer.

The Chilean national holds a masters in sports management, is a sports technician and a football referee and after arriving in Australia last year, he spent eight months living in Melbourne, where one of the thirty-year-old’s first jobs was with the Victorian football association.

“At home I’m a soccer referee, with the national association in the capital, Santiago, which was a fulltime job refereeing elite games, so when I came to Dubbo to work at Fletchers it really impacted me because in Chile, I’ve never done this kind of job working with animals in this way.

“Fortunately, they have put me in the load out so I’m lifting boxes in the cold room, where we’re given

jackets and all the equipment, we need to stay comfortable, and it’s interesting because I see all the different types of meat products, such as premium lamb and where it’s being sent.

“Trucks come in from Costco, and we send to China, and America is big customer but no, not Chile,” Joaquin said.

“We don’t have lamb in Chile, and we tend to eat a lot of chicken and beef. I do like cooking but I’m trying to eat more salads here and I just tried salmon for the first time with a little bit of pepper on top and really liked it, because we don’t have that at home either.”

Though English isn’t spoken widely in Chile where the first language is Spanish, Joaquin is fluent and says he enjoys being able to practice at work every day.

“I was working in traffic control in Melbourne for a while and I found it hard to understand people talking on the radio because of their accent,

but it’s a bit like that at home too, because American Latinos or people from Spain can’t understand us in Chile because we speak so fast, a bit like Australian English I think.”

The young adventurer came to Australia early last year and in order to extend his working holiday visa he has to work in the regions, which is how he came across the opportunity at Fletchers.

“I came to Dubbo in November last year for the interview and within a week they asked me to come and start working here, so it’s very different of course because at home I live five minutes from the beach, but I hear Newcastle beaches are good and not too far away, so I’ll visit there one day.

“Because of my visa, I am like a backpacker but my goals are different, I don’t need to take a holiday in Bali or things like that, because I’m here to earn money to take home with me one day,” Joaquin said.

FUTURE INNOVATORS

From fi sh traps to wind farms

– so we are told – are the future of our prosperity and economic growth.

Supporting this admirable goal; country kids were recently offered the chance to try-out their skills in a competitive and fun environment; while learning at the same time.

Rotary clubs of Dubbo and surrounding towns, recently ran a highly-successful 2024 Western Plains Science and Engineering Challenge.

Held in conjunction with the University of Newcastle for the past two decades; this year’s Challenge at Dubbo Showground, again involved Rotarians and other volunteers coordinating a series stimulating activities for secondary and primary school teams from around the region.

“The students were given Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)-based challenges which required them to design solutions, try them out, and improve them on the basis of what they learned from their first attempt,” a spokesperson for the

event said.

“This year, two new activities were introduced, which have special local relevance,” they added.

The two new challenges, they explained included one based on very ancient engineering, the other, some very modern concepts.

“Fish Traps, was based on the Aboriginal technology of the Brewarrina fish traps, while ‘Wind Turbine’, gave students practical understanding of the design of wind turbines, like those being constructed at Uungula wind farm near Wellington.” the spokesperson explained.

“In both activities, students were successful in finding ways to improve their designs, after testing their prototypes.”

Local business sponsors of the Challenge also joined Rotarians and friends at dinner on Wednesday night with spokesman from Squadron Energy – who are developing the 69-turbine Uungula wind farm – offering insights into what it will achieve for renewable energy and the local community.

Ngumbaay-dyil has a grand opening

On Wednesday, February 28, a special Aboriginal shared learning hub was opened at the Delroy Campus, after a number of years of planning. Educators and students gathered to watch the ribbons being cut to this unique Aboriginal learning space.

Called ‘Ngumbaay-dy- il’ (which means ‘together in one place’). Jamie Mclennan, Colby Ross, Miley Ship and Aunty Marg were given the honour of cutting the ribbon. As staff and students gathered at the site, country was recognised, and a smoking ceremony cleansed the site to make it ready for the students. The guests also witnessed a dance by the students in one of the outside gathering places. After some speeches, all the guests got to go inside the centre and see for themselves how advanced this space is. A unique building designed and built by Barnson brings the inside to the outside and the outside in.

Some of the students are Junior members of the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) being trained to be leaders of the future.

tales of hardship, resilience, and both the beauty and dangers of our unique region.

“I love it here… I grew-up in Sydney, and then when I was 17, I moved to Bourke and I never went back,” she enthused.

“I told my dad, ‘I’m going to live in the country when I grow up’; I knew I wanted to be here,” she added.

Her inspirations are some of the industry’s greats, but she walks her own path with her songs.

“My influences are Joni Mitchell, the Indigo Girls, Australian performer Archie Roach, Shane Howard from Goanna, and James Taylor, he’s definitely my favourite,” Nerida explained.

“I do some covers, but I generally perform my own original folk, some ballads, but also lively and fun songs on a range of bush-themed topics.”

Her lyrics explore the nature of life in the country, the triumphs and challenges, hardships and heroism. The tour is called ‘Strength of Stories’, with the songs telling stories of rural lives and landscapes, she reveals.

“Although the concert won’t get people up and dancing, it’s sure to get them laughing, wondering, reflecting, possibly a tear or two, and hopefully singing along at times; though that is strictly optional,” she adds.

Performing in Dubbo tonight: Nerida Cuddy is a natural storyteller, who’s life in regional Australia has inspired her to tell the tales of lives and landscapes in her songs for more than years.

“I’m revisiting the ‘red dirt country’, as I call it, because it played a big role in my young adult life and in my growing into a songwriter.”

Her work as a music teacher at the flood-hit township of Eugowra has also inspired one of her favourite tunes, she explains.

“I’m a music teacher at St Joey’s at Eugowra, one of the schools destroyed by the floods, and this song is about the effect of that on everyone,” Nerida recalled.

“I actually had the kids in my class help write the lyrics to the song, which was performed on (ABC TV show) Back Roads recently.”

Her concerts, which also take in towns like Coonabarabran, Bourke, and Coonamble, is also a way of thanking and acknowledging people in the bush, for all they given her over the years.

“This tour is about having a great time together with songs that people can relate to; it will make you laugh and make you cry,” Nerida said.

“It’s also about enjoying performing for people in the country, the place I call home.”

Nerida is bringing her unique folk-country style to the Black Box Theatre at the Western Plains Cultural Centre tonight, Thursday, March 14, from 7pm.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

What to really expect in the toddler years

Inspired by council clean-up and realising we haven’t fought for a while, Hubby and I decided to spend Saturday arguing about what to declutter from the garage and lounge room. Obviously, we have to keep every loose screw that’s ever been found on the floor “just in case”, and I have no intention of getting rid of the picture books I read to sleepy children for 11 years straight, but that have been collecting dust for the last four.

probably won’t be the scary bleach, it is more likely to be a dog worming tablet, printer toner, a glue stick or dishwashing detergent. “I wanted to fart bubbles, Mum”.

Forget everything you ever read about feeding a toddler. They only eat chicken nuggets and Tiny Teddies. Everyone on Instagram with pics of kids eating broccoli are filthy liars with excellent Photoshop skills.

You won’t go to the toilet alone for approximately four years. This is especially fun in public toilets where they will excitedly commentate your bowel movement for everyone unfortunate enough to be in the same public bathroom as you.

But then I came across the biggest case of false advertising in the world – my old copy of What To Expect: The Toddler Years. I attempted to give it away for free on Marketplace but didn’t get a single taker. See, this piece of garbage contains guides around development, toilet training, behavioural management and toddler diet, but absolutely nothing about a two-yearold peeing in your favourite shoes. “I was checking my aim, Mum!” So buckle-up, parents, here’s some realworld advice for you:

...I was checking my aim, Mum!” So buckle-up, parents, here’s some real-world advice for you...

They won’t learn “please” or “thank you” for many, many months. But call one driver on Peisley Street a “motherf****** s***head” and they’ll repeat that for their pre-school teacher, your mother-in-law and your elderly next door neighbour EVERYTIME they see them.

Toddlers want independence. They will assert this independence from the safety of your arms because they also want to be carried everywhere by you, their slave. Except in carparks. Oh no, carparks are not for carrying, they’re for running away.

You now live in a Fisher Pricesponsored trash dump with Bunnings safety corners on all of your expensive imported furniture. Don’t worry, though, your mother-in-law will tidy up when she comes over as she makes little comments about how competent parents were “back in her day”.

Tantrums. Reasons for said tantrums include, but are not limited to: Not letting them play on the road. Brushing their teeth. Not buying them a pet polar bear. Not being able to identify what their painting is. Someone ate the last Paddle Pop (it was them).

You will call the Poisons Hotline in a mad panic one day because your child consumed something while your back was turned for 2.1 seconds. It

You now drink iced coffee. Not by choice of course, just because you ran out of time to drink it while it was hot and you can’t heat it up because the inside of the microwave is covered in spaghetti sauce.

Toddlers don’t sleep. They can’t possibly… what if they miss out on something? The only way they can eventually fall asleep is at the end of a five-hour car journey as you pull into your driveway, or in your bed, between you and your partner.

But, don’t worry, you will eventually have some time alone with your partner. Your parents will eventually step in and babysit so the two of you can finally reconnect. This is the night you will fall pregnant with baby number two.

Stay tuned for What To Expect with a Newborn and a Toddler. Spoiler alert: So. Many. Nappies.

Clare’s Angels was formed in 2012 by a group of friends after Clare Diffey was diagnosed with a rare neurological regressive disorder called Rett Syndrome at 18 months old. Rett Syndrome affects one in 9000 girls, with boys more rarely affected. The clinical diagnosis has often been uncertain in early childhood as the symptoms may be confused with those occurring in other disorders such as autism, cerebral palsy and non-specific global developmental delay.

With further research the syndrome is now often confirmed with genetic testing. From 2012 Clare’s Angels have raised money for notfor-profit organisations benefitting children with special needs and disabilities, and Rett Syndrome research.

First 2024 meeting for the Gilgandra Evening Branch

Looking forward to a wonderful year of friendship, fellowship, and serving the community, first meeting of 2024 for the CWA’s Gilgandra Evening Branch News was held on Wednesday, February 21, at the CWA Rooms in Warren Road.

President, Rebekah Makila, welcomed members and guests after the Branch’s long Christmas break, before thanking everyone for their support at the Australia Day Breakfast, which was held in conjunction with Gilgandra Lions Club.

In more good news, the CWA involvement in the Christmas Wonderland event, was a huge success with everyone having a great time, with congratulations also to Maxine Elsom on her announcement as Gilgandra’s 2024 Citizen of the Year.

A recent highlight for the local CWA, involved members recently attending the official announcement of the successful tender for giant builder, Renascent, for construction of Dubbo’s Macquarie Home Stay Stage Two project.

The second part of the hospital accommodation facility for those from western NSW, is to be named, “The CWA of NSW Guest House”. Constructions of this wonderful resource is ready to begin and likely to be finished by late this year.

Home Stay CEO, Rod Crowfoot, recently thanked the CWA for all they do, and acknowledged the support the Association has provided over the years.

In upcoming events the local CWA Market Day is being hosted at the Tractor Pull on Easter Saturday, March 30. The Gilgandra Show in April will also include the CWA kiosk open on the Friday, April 19 for three hours and most of the day on the Saturday.

On Anzac Day, Thursday, April 25, the Laying of the Wreath will occur with a Morning Tea will at the CWA rooms also.

Members who are organising jams, cooking, and other preserves, for the CWA Kiosk at the Royal Easter Show, should have them ready for collection by Monday, March 18.

Members should also note that The Quest for Life Foundation morning tea, is a community event being held in early May.

Among the well-received reports; the International Report revealed that the country of study

for 2024, is France, with Helen presenting 10 Interesting facts about this cultural and technological power-house. These included that the world’s first artificial heart and face transplant took place in France; with the country also the world’s most-popular travel destination!

The Agricultural/ Environment Report announced that the topic of study for 2024 is that terrible biological and agricultural pest, Red Imported Fire Ants. The pathway of entry to Australia for this grave threat, is unknown, but they were first detected in Brisbane in February 2001, and it’s one of the worst invasive species to reach Australia with the ants damaging crops, robbing bee-hives, and killing newborn livestock.

The Cultural Report involved Jessica taking members into the language of France via numerous quotations with words including: “Salut”: Hi, Hello, Goodbye. ( only use it with friends and family); and “Bonsoir”: See you soon, (both formal and informal).

The Land Cookery Report discussed the Macquarie Group Land Cookery event held in Gilgandra involving Jan Young travelling from Ba-

thurst to judge the many delicious entries in a range of sections on the day. Rebekah, our Gilgandra CWA Cook, was also congratulated on her win with a first place for her Jaffa Marble Cake; her second in the Butter Cake; and third for the Gluten-Free Whole Orange Cake.

Members will all have an opportunity to cook a sultana cake to be judged for the next meeting.

The Publicity report discussed two Zoom meetings with the Publicity Support forum with Simon Marnie, an ABC presenter, calling-in for a brief visit at the February Zoom event.

Members found his time with us to be informative about his many interviews with CWA members in the extensive area of his travels in his role with ABC Radio.

There will also be a Publicity Support Forum Webinar in March; check The Country Woman’s Magazine for details with the guest speaker, Simon Marnie.

Members will need to register prior to the Webinar to be able to participate.

All in all, it was a great first meeting for 2024, followed by a delicious supper!

We are the fabulous 2 Blossoms from Buninyong Public School, Dubbo. There are 26 students in our class and our teacher is Miss Brennan. We also have the amazing Mil as our helper, who helps each one of us at different times.

This term we are learning about patterns and how we can create them using 2D shapes. Miss Brennan has been reading The Witches by Roald Dahl this term while we enjoy our fruit break every morning. It has quickly become our favourite book.

We have also been learning about how materials change in science and doing experiments including making playdough and creating our own utensils using natural resources.

Henry Ma chose the rather singular name of his traditional Cantonese diner in the Orana Mall, the “Happy Chinese Restaurant”, for a very good reason.

“It’s a good name, isn’t it? I just like it, no-one’s going to forget it,” he said.

“It’s lucky, it’s easy to remember, and my wife (Joanna) likes it, too,” he added.

His journey to the golden west came via Canberra and Warren, where he worked running a restaurant for a decade, before moving to Dubbo just over five years ago.

The local summers, he adds don’t bother him, likening them to those of Guangzhou

Week

in southern China, where he grew-up.

“I like Dubbo, it’s got friendly people, it’s good for the children’s study, it’s got culture and everything, it’s also got sports of every kind; football, netball, everything you want to play.

“The heat? It’s the same as China, you still have spring, summer, winter, and autumn, it’s no different here.”

With chef’s suggestions ranging from red curry chicken, rainbow beef, salt and pepper pork chop, honey mustard calamari, and Chu Hou sauce beef brisket, Henry finds it hard to pick out his own top item on the menu.

“I actually like a lot of dishes, I don’t really have a favourite myself,” he explains.

“A lot are good, it just depends on the type of meal that different people prefer, seafood, beef, pork, or chicken,” he added.

One thing, diners shouldn’t have any trouble picking a day to eat out, the Happy Chinese is open for almost any time you want.

“I’m the chef and owner, and I work six days and seven nights, I keep very busy,” he said.

“I have Monday lunchtimes off though; I like my work, and we all have to pay the rent,” he concluded.

Yes! I’m a

This is a remarkable collection.

Mainly oil cans and locks and other farming Knick knacks.

This is Jenny’s collection. However, Jenny has passed away, but her husband Robert has kept the collection to remind him of her and her collecting days.

He has them beautifully displayed in glass cabinets. She collected these over 50 years.

Jenny loved all this farming and grew up on a farm as did Robert. He has not added to the collection but keeps them on display for friends and family to admire.

Are you a collector too?

Masterful ladies bring home medals from three-day meet

DUBBO Cycle Club recently had another successful salient; this time at the Masters NSW Track Titles, with the trio of Erica Lunney, Simone Grounds, and Emily Williams, taking a swag of medals home after a triumphant weekend of racing.

Day One witnessed Erica Lunney in the Women’s Master Three Division, opening the weekend of racing in the 3000-metre Individual Pursuit where she claimed a Gold medal against Toireasa Gallagher from Bathurst. Emily Williams in the Women’s Master One event replicated the results with a Gold in the same race with Simone rounding-off the first event with a silver in the Women’s Master Four division.

The three ladies then prepared for an explosive event – namely, the Teams Sprint – where each rider completes only one lap. The event involves the first rider getting the team started with the first lap, and then “swinging-up” and allowing the remaining riders to come through at top speed, the sec-

ond rider then keeps-up the pace, and swings-up the track to allow the last rider to finish the event.

The three ladies completed the distance in a credible time of 57.67 seconds and took the Gold and top-spot on the podium.

Day Two featured sprint events being contested with good qualifying of all riders to keep in the top three. All ladies returned a fantastic result, with Simone, typically an endurance specialist, claiming silver. Erica and Emily gained the top-spot in taking gold in two very fast rides in their respective divisions.

The next event was the Women’s Open Teams pursuit over 4000-metres. Our very-own Erica and Simone, along with Toireassa from Bathurst, and Laurelea Moss from Coffs Harbour, tookout the event in a time of 5:43.028.

Lining-up yet again for the last event of the day, the scratch race, Simone and Erica both scored a medal each with a Bronze for Simone and a Gold for Erica.

Day Three rounded-off the competition with the Time Trial, Keirin, and

Point Score events being held.

For the 500-metre Time Trial, Simone was awarded silver in 41.238 seconds and Erica the Gold medal in a time of 39.063 seconds. In the Keirin racing, Erica again claimed Gold with her explosive strength while Simone, more suited to endurance, returned an awesome result in bagging silver.

In the final event, the Pointscore, riders are awarded points on sprint laps during the race. Erica claimed her eighth Gold medal for the event, and Simone a silver, in a closely-fought race in which she just missed out on top=spot.

Local riders have all prepared very well, and are now in the final stages of fine-tuning their fitness in readiness for the National Track Titles in Brisbane with Erica, Simone, and Emily, as well as Darrell Wheeler, to ride in the Master’s Division from Saturday, March 16 to Wednesday, March 20.

In other news, Emily Hines in the Under 17 Women’s Division is also competing a little earlier between March 13–17.

DUBBO HOCKEY MASTERS NOW INTO ITS FOURTH YEAR

DUBBO Hockey will host 15 teams from as far afield as Sydney, Newcastle, and Canberra, for three days starting this Friday over the weekend for its Masters in the Bush tournament.

Dubbo Hockey Association President and international Masters player, Tracey Hardie-Jones, explained that as the club enters its fourth year hosting this prestigious event, every club or district previously entered, has decided to come back, with facilities now the only limiting factor, she said in discussing the field restrictions in the golden west.

“We have embraced hockey in this community for nearly 100 years…we could easily have another 15 teams, if we had another court,” Tracey said.

“We’ve moved from Garden Park to the Riverbank Ovals, and now have our own synthetics and club house, but it’s difficult to grow the sport, when other places like Parkes, Orange, Bathurst, and Lithgow, have multi-field facilities,” she added.

As DPN have reported earlier, Dubbo will also be the focus of three new-concept “Hockey 5” tournaments later this year.

“With Australian Hall of Famer, Brent Livermore, canvassing his former team-mates, and the likelihood of current Hockeyroos, including Mariah Williams coming to town, we are certain to draw crowds and hopefully raise funds to build-up our case for a new field,” Tracey added.

The action starts at 7.30 on Fri morning, with a dinner at the club house on Saturday night.

Dubbo is the hub, with locals the curtain-raiser in perfect weather

DUBBO will be the hub of bowls for the next few weeks, but Sundy Bowls was the perfect “curtain-raiser” with 38 bowlers enjoying another ideal morning of social bowls.

Big winners for the morning, were Mary Perry, Cheryl Storch, and Phil Knight, who proved too good for Chris Castlehouse, Frank Armstrong, and Ian Humphries.

After winning seven of the first eight ends and racking-up a five and a six count, they were up by 17 shots. Chris and Co. did manage a four on 10, but only added a further three for a total of nine for the game. The final 24-9, scoreline was good enough for the best of the morning!

Sue Armstrong, Pete Bennison, and Tod O’Dea also rolled well in the first eight. In fact, Tod rolled a couple of his bowls almost onto the Jack on one end! But it was not enough against Ros Joseph, Helene Emblen,

and Graham Ross, who took a two-shot lead into the break and extended it by adding six of the second eight for a 15-8 win, and second place for the morning. A five count on end six, kept Mel Giddings and Trevor Tink in reach of Steve Kelly and Pete Ruzansthen, and a four on the first after the turnaround, gave them a one-shot lead. Another three sets of quads saw them snatch a commanding 25-15 win, and third place for the morning.

Having won only two of the first eight meant that Sue McCauley, Therese Gaio, and Gordon Scott, were well off the pace. Leo Balstad, Eric Satchell, and Gaye Cottee, then moved into the second half ahead and blew it out to seven in the face of a comeback from their opposites. Final result – 18-12 to Leo’s mob.

Three sets of triples enabled Di Hildebrant, Greg Hough, and Mick Strawhan, to jump five shots ahead of Gordon Lummis, John Davis, and Bryan O’Sul-

livan. Mick’s side maintained their advantage with three more doubles, to claim the points 16-11.

Sue O’Dea, John Kennedy, and Anthony Coe made a statement during their first eight ends, recording 10 shots against Ron McCauley, Chris Strojny, and Ruby Stocking’s five. Anthony and his side were made to fight by Ruby and her boys though who finished just three off the pace. Chris won the raffle; a nice consolation after a courageous battle.

Alan Stratford and Col Cottee were also involved in an enthralling contest with Ray Strawhan and John Cole. Leading by four on seven, Al and Col rolled a triple on five, and a four on eight, to smother any possible threat. Another four-count on nine was negated by Ray and John, but the A-C combo won by 18-15.

Enjoy the State Championships over the next 10 days, bowlers! paired-up for second, while Brian Championships continue on Sunday.

Macquarie play on, while mourning loss of club stalwarts, Bert and Greg

Photos

MACQUARIE Scorpions cricketers battled-on with mixed emotions and their hearts on their sleeves last Saturday for the final round of the Whitney Cup.

In recent weeks, the Club have farewelled Bert Morton, a former player, parent, and well-known local umpire; a loss that was followed by the shock passing of Life Member, Greg Paris.

Life-long member, Jason Green and his sons, Cody and Kyan, shared a special moment as a tribute to the two by playing on Saturday, remembering those who have

built the Macquarie Cricket Club. The stalwart having family on the field with him on the weekend, was still a sad occasion, though it did epitomise the spirit of the Blues.

Unfortunately, Macquarie were no match for the semi-finals bound RSL Colt, going down by 112 runs.

Both proud clubs acknowledged the loss of two men who had left a mark on both cricket and the wider community, with Bert a hockey legend and Greg, the former head greens-keeper at Railway Bowling Club.

In this week’s finals, RSL Colts meet Newtown with the winner to play minor premiers, CYMS, in the Grand Final.

The world is watching our Facebook fight!

An open letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

Dear Prime Minister, Your first response to Facebook brazenly announcing they’ll stop paying for our news that they use to make a fortune from was…perfect!

“That’s not the Australian way,” you said.

Exactly.

Australians hate bullies. Australians fight for a fair go. And this battle is not just a fight for a fair go here - the whole world is watching.

Meta, the trillion dollar tech giant that owns Facebook has built an empire out of content they don’t own. They don’t produce anything. They ‘share’ the great work of others and keep the cash.

The Australian government was the first in the world to call out this scandal, and in 2021 the News Media Bargaining Code forced them to finally pay for news content. But not anymore.

Meta is betting that if they bully the Australian government, they win the world. PM, this is a fight for the future of news and democracy. This is fight against fake news and a fight for a fair go for all journalists who hold the powerful to account, all around the world.

Let’s make sure Australia shows Facebook what a fair go is. The world is watching.

Yours sincerely,

Bowls history is being created in Dubbo with Disability Championships on show

BY the time the first bowlers rolled-off the greens at North Dubbo Sporties on Tuesday, a new chapter on inclusion, had been written in Australian Sport.

For the first time, the NSW Disability Championships are being held in conjunction with the NSW Open.

Club Dubbo Bowls Manager, Anthony Brown, who is competing in both tournaments, is very excited.

“This championship is usually run by Wheelchair Bowls, but NSW has taken it on this year and it is sensational!” Anthony said.

“NSW has really gotten behind it, and the numbers are up from previous years,” he added.

The Championships rolled-off at North Dubbo Sporties on Tuesday morning, and the Opens will be played on all three club’s greens right through until Wednesday, March 27.

Anthony says the opportunity for bowls-lovers to see the best of the best, is unequalled.

“Australian Disability Champion, Jimmy Reynolds will be on the rinks.

He is someone we all aspire to be,” Anthony said.

He explained that his sporting ethos is about including everyone in the love of the sport.

“It is amazing to watch

him compete against other athletes, who may have missing or prosthetic limbs, and other physical as well as intellectual challenges,” Anthony explained.

“The thoughtfulness of each bowler in their preparation and during games, is something to behold.”

Anthony says there are so many people who haven’t previously been involved because of their “limitations” now on the greens in clubs all over the State.

The championships are in pairs and singles, played in a round-robin format with finals determined by results in the preliminary rounds.

The age group competing is broad – juniors playing Opens through to Seniors – and Anthony is proud of the number of volunteers who are committed to the success of this innovative event.

“All the clubs have come together like we do for major events, and the enthusiasm of everyone is quite unbelievable.

“We recognise this as a chance to build on all the big events like touch footy, golf, racing, greyhounds, the trots, cricket, tennis, swimming, cycling, and all the motor sports that attract people to our city and the region,” Anthony concluded.

Entry is free every day, and all the clubs welcome visitors and new members to the Championships.
