learn more about youth homelessness when an event to raise community awareness on the social issue is held on Wednesday, April 17.

Youth Homelessness Matters Day (YHMD) is a national day that began in 1990 to raise awareness and public discussion about child and youth homelessness.

The day is marked annually nationwide on the third Wednesday in April.

Dubbo’s YHMD event will be at Macquarie St Rotunda and is a joint operation between Uniting, Mission Australia and YFoundations.

Stephen Newman, a case worker at

event is about generating greater community awareness and understanding of homelessness.

Uniting Doorways is a drop-in service for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Doorways for Youth, Reconnect and Targeted Early Intervention are bodies of Uniting that seek to improve the lives of youth that are dealing with complex challenges including homelessness.

Mr Newman said homelessness came in differing levels and creating understanding of this and how many people it affects is crucial.

“It’s a serious issue,” Mr Newman said.

DUBBO’S OWN

“Our aim is to raise awareness of youth

Mr Newman explained many homeless people can be sleeping rough and sleeping under bridges, while others may couch surf with family and friends.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics uses six operational groups for presenting estimates of people experiencing homelessness on Census. These groups are:

 People living in impoverished dwellings, tents or sleeping out.

 People living in supported accommodation for the homeless.

 People staying temporarily with other households.

 People living in temporary lodgings.

 People living in ‘severely’ crowded dwellings.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed in the 2021 Census that 122,494 people were estimated to be experiencing homelessness on Census night that year. Of that figure, 55.9 per cent were male, 44.1 per cent were female and 23 per cent of all people facing homelessness that night (28,174) were aged between 12 and 24.

In Australia in 2023, it was estimated that more than 38,000 youths had experienced homelessness at some stage that year.

Dubbo’s YMHD event will commence around 10am.

A life celebrated with Love and Laughter

Andrew ‘Doc’ Livingston was never one to be left wondering, or to allow others’ ideas to hold him back from where he wanted to go. It’s why he and his wife Barb were married by Elvis in a Las Vegas chapel, why he became a WWI Ger- man machine gunner (albeit for a week in a 2011 war movie they filmed locally), and why he and Barb got their kit off along with 1000 strangers on the Opera House steps for the famous artist Spencer Tunic.

He lived for the next laugh. He loved his cricket and he loved professional wrestling. Footy to him was all codes.

“You don’t need to choose!” he demanded whenever people wanted to debate.

He loved his Sharks, and he loved the Swans, and he tried to teach his toddler daughters the team song as their first words: “Cheer, cheer the red and the white…!”

You couldn’t pin a label on Doc Livingston… he was a chameleon in the community and loved to just be out and about, doing things.

You were equally likely to find him at a Screaming Jets concert or at the DRTCC lapping up local theatre. He lived for ex-

periences. He was cheeky beyond measure and loved a joke.

A beloved PE teacher at Delroy Campus and the Senior Campus of Dubbo College between 2001 and 2012, it was on a teaching exchange in Canada in 2013 when they discovered a massive tumour in his brain. And so, for the past 10 years, he had fended off the lurking Grim Reaper, and he just got busy living.

He was a proud office bearer in the Masonic Lodge and an active member of the Dubbo Men’s shed and the Dubbo RSL Sub-branch.

On Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2024

we farewelled a mate all too soon. A husband to Barb, father to Hazel and Bridget, son to Peter and Jenny, brother to Ruth, Sarah and Simon.

A huge gathering of family, old school friends, long-time Army buddies, colleagues and community members met in the RSL auditorium to pay tribute to a bloke who lived as an example to us all. It was a ceremony of celebration, and the beers, tears and laughter flowed freely into the evening. Doc would have loved it.

Vale, Andrew ‘Doc’ Livingston, and may your brand of mischief live on in us all and bring you immortality.

Hard work and high energy is what Orange musician can promise at Stock Route Festival

HARD work has taken Robbie Mortimer to the Stock Route Music Festival and high-energy is what he can promise fans that head to Dubbo’s Lazy River Estate on Saturday, April 20.

The guitarist and singer-songwriter from Orange has been performing in one way or another since he was 18, but only last year was Robbie able to make music a full-time role.

The biggest moment in his career has come recently, with the March 22 release of his single Blow The Speakers.

Blow The Speakers is a high-energy country anthem that follows the dreams of a country kid, his website states.

“It’s about how a song can instantly transport us back to a moment in time,” Robbie remarked on robbiemortimer.com.

The single has come off the back of being a 2023 Toyota Star Maker Grand Finalist.

Robbie said when he released Blow The Speakers, he received an Instagram message from Lee Kernaghan asking if he could call him.

Of course, the answer was yes, Robbie fondly recalling playing Kernaghan’s famous single The Outback Club (1992) as a child.

“I was listening to his music when I was eight,” Robbie enthused. “For him to ring me and wish me all the best, that was special.”

Robbie said there has been no other special ingredient other than determination and drive to reach this point.

“It’s been 12 years of hard work to get here,” he said.

“People think it’s sort of happened over-

night but it’s been a lot of hard work to get to this stage.”

Some of the hard yakka isn’t just on stage, it’s behind the wheel.

Mortimer put 78,000 km on his utility as he drove around Australia taking any work he could get.

That led him to move to Newcastle where he can touch base with industry contacts more.

As far as the Stock Route goes, he promised a high-energy rock set with a Central West team.

Goolagong’s Phil Burke (drums) and Dubbo’s Simon Allen (guitarist) will be Mortimer’s team at the Stock Route.

The fact he is now performing within the region he grew up in isn’t lost on him.

“When a major event was on in Orange or Dubbo, we’d go to it,” he explained.

“I understand that it is an honour to have people travel regionally … so it means a lot to me to perform in the Central West.”

Picking up his first guitar as a nine-yearold, writing songs and making music has always been natural for him.

But natural enjoyment and natural talent don’t always lead to success.

There have been pitfalls and tough times along the way.

Robbie is lucky to have two people entrenched in the music industry that he can lean on for advice.

James Johnston and Coy Bowles from the Zac Brown Band are the two that have helped him the most.

“It’s pretty special my friendship with Coy, me a kid from Orange and Coy being in one of the world’s best-known (country music)

bands,” Robbie said.

Robbie grew up in a rugby league family with his father Peter a NSWRL premiership winner with Canterbury.

Robbie enjoyed a relatively successful career himself in the 13-man-code with lower-grade stints at Balmain, Parramatta and Redcliffe but music was always his primary passion.

A former teacher, the 30-year-old has left education behind, moved to Newcastle and his dedicating himself to his music.

Robbie believes his varied life helps his musical story-telling.

More importantly, a range of roles and experiences has developed his empathy, lifeskills and just being a person people can easily like and depend upon.

“I always understood what I was meant to do, even if other people didn’t,” he said.

“People say to me that with the number of things I have done I’ve lived 10 lives already.

“I’ve been lucky to have a varied background.

“It does make you a better writer, but more importantly it makes you a better person,” And he knows the path he is on now is his own.

“There was never that pressure of expectation within the family,” he said of playing rugby league. “It was more from outside sources. I was always allowed to do what I wanted to do. I had a very supportive family.”

Outside of the Stock Route Festival, Robbie just played at Winton’s Way Out Festival in north-western Queensland and will again be on the Professional Bull Rider’s Association Monster Energy Tour.

Music lovers have the chance to see Robbie Mortimer in action with Canada’s Dan Davidson, Travis Collins, Max Jackson, Aaron Jurd and The Bushwackers at the Stock Route Music Festival.

Thousands voted on the outcome, with Aaron coming first in a close finish.

Aaron is releasing new music early next year, which he will now showcase at the festival.

First in a series of articles recognising our veterans’ service as we approach Anzac Day, we recognise here the local lads who attended Dubbo schools, and then went on to train at the RAAF’s No. 5 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) at Narromine. Much of the original research is from essays provided to Dubbo Photo News, by local historian Patrick Bourke. •••

‘THOSE magnificent men in their flying machines…’, so the words of the old music hall song went. Locals that trained at the RAAF No. 5 Elementary Flying School at Narromine during World War II, were exactly that.

However – far from the rather glamorous, though dangerous, escape from a life in the trenches that it had been on the Western Front in the Great War – being an aviator in World War II was a deadly serious business.

The unveiling last October by Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston KC, AFC (retired) at the Narromine Aviation Museum of the Memorial Wall with over 2000 names of servicemen who trained there, graphically displays this fact, Museum co-founder, Beryl Hartley explains.

“Of the 2800-odd airmen who trained here during the war, about a third didn’t come home,” Beryl says. “The wall contains all

the classes that went through, and the ones with ‘Xs’ next to them, were those killed-in-action or other mishaps.”

The figures were even worse for those in the first classes to pass through during the early days of the war, when the often technically- and numerically-superior Luftwaffe of the Nazi’s and the Mitsubishi Zeroes of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service took a heavy toll on Allied aircraft and crews.

Later in the war, the British bombing campaign against German industry also paid a huge price in the lives of air crews in cumbersome bombers that nightly played dice with intercept

fighters and increasingly accurate flak over occupied Europe.

For Dubbo youth, the toll was even higher, with Patrick Bourke’s research showing that fully half of all local students who went on to train at Narromine are still in the skies, waiting for their final clearance to land.

“In early 1940, the Narromine Aerodrome was handed-over to the RAAF for the establishment of the Number 5 Elementary Flying Training School (No. 5 EFTS),” Patrick explained.

“This was one of a dozen such training schools which were formed as part of the Empire Air Training School,” he added.

SHAKESPEARE FUNERALS

Training on the open fields and clear skies over the Central West in World War I-era Tiger Moths, the RAAF training school at Narromine graduated around 2850 pilots during its four years of existence.

“At least 25 ex-students of Dubbo High School graduated from the No. 5 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) at Narromine during World War II,” Patrick revealed. “Many of these graduates would die during the Second World War, including 13 ex-students of Dubbo High School.”

As well as a high casualty rate, the local flyers also displayed exceptional courage and daring during a time when our very existence as a country, was under threat.

“Quite a number of the graduates from the No. 5 EFTS were awarded military awards for bravery.

“Dubbo High School ex-students were awarded one Victoria Cross (VC) and six Distinguished Flying Crosses (DFCs),” Patrick said.

Patrick provided this list of Dubbo High School ex-students who graduated as pilots from the No. 5 EFTS at Narromine, but who died during the War:

Let's Taco'bout...

“It was a great crowd for our first ever ‘Let’s Taco Bout’…” say the organisers.

Sharon Quill (Social Gain) and Psychological Therapist Renee Webster held a thought-provoking dialogue last Wednesday, delving into the intricate topic of identity.

“We went from origins to influences and even had the crowd sharing their

thoughts about Dubbo and its identity,” explained Sharon, “and people were up for it. They listened, laughed, and shared.” She emphasised that these nights are not presentations. They are fun, interesting discussions that get people thinking on a nuanced subject and taking them home for more questioning, discussion and connection.

‘Let’s TacoBout’ is a monthly chat on nuanced topics over a margarita and a taco. Having the right space was essential, and Sharon is thrilled to be holding these at The Establishment in Macquarie Street, a great space which immediately invites comfortable and intimate conversation.

Spoilt for choice – getting your career decisions right in jobs market boom

JOBS, we spend most of our adults lives at them, and yet often choose our careers by chance, inclination, latent talents, fashion, parental expectation, or simply proximity.

For the first time in decades though, regional Australia is now enjoying a jobs boom with more positions available in so many fields - ranging from hospitality, to education, to health, than candidates to fill them.

In this situation, choosing the right career is more important than ever. While many regional workers from the early 1970s, right up until the COVID-19 lockdowns, were happy-enough with any reasonable job with a decent salary, now is a great time for employees to set their sights on a position that is both fulfilling and rewarding.

What happens then, when you have to decide between a range of job or career or job opportunities, money versus satisfaction, ease over interest?

Think long-term – while people often say, “I’ll only stick with it for six months or a year” every career decision you make, ultimately impacts on your long-term work tra-

LOVE YOUR WORK

jectory. It is easy to get in a rut at a position that you can fufill easily, but which provides little long-term satisfaction or enjoyment, which means it’s all the more important to make the right choices early.

Long-term ambitions should act as an end goal, and whichever job choice you make now, it should move you further down the road towards that end goal.

Be careful of “push” factors –don’t take a new position, just because you want to be free of your current situation. Ask yourself, whether the new job fulfils the reasons you decided to look for a new job in the first place.

If the new job on offer doesn’t address these issues, you could be left feeling unfulfilled and wondering if it was all worth it. In simple terms, don’t end-up jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire by choosing the wrong position to leave your current one for.

Assess your work/life balance

– Be careful of “the job comes first at all times” cultures with an over-emphasis on appearance, rigid punctuality, and loyalty. Think, “what impact will this job have on

my own needs and requirements?”

If you have a young family, sick parent, or other responsibilities, do they offer work-from-home or flexibility in working hours and days’ off? Also consider weekends and nights, few jobs are worth becoming strangers to your partners, children, and friends, and other life commitments like sports, church, or volunteering. Money isn’t everything, and you don’t want to get to your retirement, regretting putting a demanding boss first at every turn.

Consider the culture “fit” – a company’s internal emphasis and focus, are critically-important when deciding which career to go into, because you need to be sure, you’ll enjoy going into work every day.

What constitutes a “good” culture depends on the individual, so take clues and insight wherever they can to assess if the workplace is right for you, such as asking friends or ex-employees who may know the business. Think about the types of roles you’ve enjoyed in the past, and which of the roles on offer comes closest to replicating

that environment.”

Don’t get blinded by salary –while money is important in any job, you should fairly reflect the level of work expected, it shouldn’t be the only factor determining whether you accept or reject a position, ever! Some roles can offer a range of non-monetary perks such as, increased responsibility, learning opportunities, or career development. If you want to make a decision unbiased by salary, ignore the financial package, and focus

instead on what excites you about the career.

Trust your gut – Your instincts are your greatest gift in deciding what job you want to devote a large part of your life to. Taking on a career is never without its risks, regardless of how much thought has gone into the move. Being risk-averse isn’t a bad quality when looking to choose careers or change jobs, but at some point, you may just have to trust your gut and take that leap of faith!

New technology in upgrade to Wello’s sewerage system

REPLACING the near century-old sewerage system in Wellington is now going to be a lot easier, with the project imminently underway that locals should barely notice!

New pipe-bursting technology will allow Council and contractors to do the job without digging-up footpaths, backyards, and public land to achieve these vital public works.

“Actually, it’s a very good story, Wellington’s sewage pipes are quite old and they’re coming to their use-by date,” local representative and Dubbo Deputy Mayor, Councillor Richard Ivey said.

“They were in danger of malfunctioning, that is why Wellington is being done before Dubbo, I understand,” he added.

Innovative technology, however, should mean that, in the vast majority of cases, the days of backhoes and work crews leaving piles of clay and mud after they finish over a wet winter, are now over.

“The new process allows for a type of conduit to be run through the course of the old pipe, with the new pipes simply then being expanded-out to fit the dimensions perfectly,” Cr Ivey explained.

“So, you don’t have to dig-up the old pipes and then replace them with the new with all the cost, noise, and inconvenience that that causes,” he said.

Council’s Capital Programs Coordinator, Paul Yeo, said the pro-

cess of relining the mains provides several benefits, including being more customer-friendly.

“Previously, such rehabilitation required excavation only techniques be undertaken, which is an expensive, high-risk, and intrusive approach when considering that work is often required inside private property and at great depths,” Mr Yeo said.

“Whilst some excavation will be required, the works are mostly performed by rehabilitating the sewer system via process of relining the existing pipes,” Mr Yeo said.

“This process improves the customer experience due to the limited requirement for by-pass pumping of sewage, reducing public exposure to potential health and environmental risks, while also providing cost savings to Council in the process,” he added.

Rehabilitation works will be completed in Wellington before moving on to Dubbo with all works expected to be completed by about August.

Cr Ivey said that Wellington being first cab-off-the-rank with the project, is a good sign of the regional council’s commitment to its second town.

“When we first amalgamated in 2016, there was a sense that we weren’t getting that much of a look-in,” Cr Ivey said.

“But since this new Council came-in, I think that feelings has turned-around, and we seem to be getting a lot more in the way of capital works and attention,” he concluded.

APRIL 11-17, 2024 DUBBO PHOTO NEWS 21

We all know about the housing crisis, which is even impacting regional cities like Dubbo, with home prices through the roof.

While the average Australian can’t do much about the drivers of this long-term problem that seems out of the control of even our elected officials to fix, there are some innovative ways that potential home-buyers can look to live with the current squeeze.

Although they all entail a degree of innovation, effort, and sacrifice that was not really required by young Australians of previous generations, they do offer some hope to families looking to enter a market that is more seller-friendly than at almost any time in recent memory.

Two incomes are better than one…pair up to purchase!

While more and more first home-buyers are buying properties with friends, colleagues, and even strangers, the key is getting some really-solid legal advice beforehand. Make sure you have a very detailed contract drawn-up, in case anything goes awry. Have a thorough understanding about if and when you plan to sell, what will happen in the event of job loss, or what you’re going to do if one of you wants to sell before the other is ready.

Getting Mum and Dad to go guarantor…

This old-style financial guarantee was popular in the post-war years during a previous housing crisis in which parents (or even grandparents, auntie’s uncles) go guarantor on their children’s loans or even an early inheritance. Sometimes this “help” comes in the form of a lump sum payment, or parents and family members can use the equity in their own home to provide security for a portion of your loan.

It’s a fantastic gesture, but it’s important that parents get good legal advice around exactly what they’re entering into, and to remember, if something goes wrong, the buck stops with Mum and Dad! Consider some alternative options

Landlording – Get help paying your mortgage by renting out your extra room. Having a housemate also means splitting utility bills.

Buying off the plan or building –Purchasing off the plan means you only pay stamp duty on the value of the land, not the house and land, potentially saving you tens of thousands of dollars.

Buying a subdivided lot – Fewer square metres equals fewer zeros at the end of the purchase price.

Buying in the next village out –You may have your heart set on a new Dubbo estate, but once you’re in and settled, is being 20 minutes further-out, really going to matter

more than having a bigger garden or an extra bedroom?

Save, Save, Save…

It’s the old “smashed avocado” argument, should you crimp your lifestyle in your best years, so as to be able to purchase home for your future? To get a loan, however, you need to be able to show you’re able to repay the loan, meaning you need a healthy savings history. So shop around for a high interest savings account, and start to make regular deposits.

Remember, it’s not just the deposit you’re saving for – you’ll also need money for stamp duty, legal fees, mortgage insurance, pest inspections, building inspections, moving and other fees.

Increase your income

Not so easy when living in the bush, where most of us are in careers where there are few opportunities to move on and up in the wage stakes easily.

But how about selling unwanted things at a garage sale or online, get a part-time waiting job at nights, or look to innovative income streams such as one-off business ventures, house-sitting, pet walking, or a weekend retail job.

Housing crisis have come and gone over the near-250 year history of modern Australia, don’t despair, you find a way forward to your dream home!

Creating Competition For Your Property

Creating competition for your property is a vital aspect of securing the best possible sale price, and a skilled real estate agent can play a key role in achieving this. The process involves a strategic sales campaign that emphasizes the property’s unique features, effectively markets to a diverse pool of potential buyers, and sustains interest to attract offers.

A successful sales campaign starts with meticulous property preparation, ensuring it stands out by addressing minor repairs and presenting it in the best possible light. The marketing strategy then unfolds, narrating the property’s story through visual, verbal, and written elements, with a focus on platforms where the target audience is most active such as online portals.

Open homes and inspections become crucial stages where potential buyers assess if the property aligns with their expectations. The goal is to generate interest and gauge whether the pricing is competitive. A skilled agent uses this opportunity to engage with potential buyers, understand their intentions, and identify serious contenders.

Negotiation is the final step, and a proficient agent excels in this phase by determining each buyer’s willingness to pay and creating urgency.

Overall, the art of creating competition involves a strategic blend of property presentation, targeted marketing, effective pricing, open house dynamics and skillful negotiation, all orchestrated by an experienced real estate professional.

Drop into Bras N

Things for your best underwear, lingerie, lounge, nightwear

A s any woman knows, choosing the right bras, underwear, lingerie, and nightwear, is about far more than just cost and convenience.

Sandra Betts from Bras N Things in the Orana Mall, says that they are central in ensuring your comfort and confidence, health and happiness.

“It’s extremely important, you may say, ‘you can’t see them’ but how important are the foundations of your house?” she asked.

“They provide support, comfort, and confidence, they impact the whole look of an outfit, your state of mind and your self-esteem,” she added.

Bras, particularly, also play a vital role in ensuring every women’s ease and well-being, she believes.

“A correct-fitting bra gives good support and is central in avoiding issues to do with back and neck pain; we provide sizes for all women, right from 8A to 22H.

“It is important also for girls to choose the right fit from an early age, it has to look and feel right, and these are things that will help you develop good choices for the rest of your life,” Sandra said.

But that’s not all they offer, with the Dubbo outlet offering a recent expansion in comfort clothes for women of all shapes, ages, and sizes.

“We have a nice new range

of lounge and sleepwear for winter that has just come-in.

“These are clothes you can feel good in around the home, but, if someone comes to the door, or you have to slip down the shops, you can also get away with them as well,” Sandra said.

With plenty of new stock just arrived, there are also some great buys for bargain-hunters looking to restock for the season ahead.

“We’ve actually also got a sale on at the moment for a whole range of stuff,” Sandra said.

“These are real savings, up to 70 per cent of for some of our selected stock, so come on down and have a look!” Week

Cindy’s Candid double at Dubbo, as Wellington Boot meet kicks off Friday

LOCAL racehorse trainer, Cindy Monaghan, is certainly in a purple patch at the moment and, on Saturday, added two more notches to her premiership ladder.

Her double started with Always A Saint in Race Three and, when Candid held-on to beat Onyspeed in the next, it was smiles-all-round for everyone involved.

One of the leading hoops in the

west, Michaela Weir, was also celebrating a double, after scoring with Connie Greig’s Laisvas in the second and Fletchlo in the last, to also cap a memorable day.

Now all eyes turn to the beautiful track at the foot of Mt Arthur for the time-honoured Wellington Boot Carnival.

Racing starts at the Wellington track on Friday with the feature race, the 2400-metre Iron Horse and, then on Sunday, it’s the Boot that attracts the

best two-year olds, followed by the Wellington Cup, a qualifier for the “Big Dance” to be run at Randwick later in the year.

An added feature of this year’s Carnival, is the introduction of the Nigel Tolhurst “Clerk of the Scales” Memorial Jockey Challenge.

The Memorial Trophy, put together by the Wellington & District Leader and Nigel’s wife, Sharon, honours the great man’s loyal service to the club.

RHINOS UNDER NEW Management

The Rhinos have been impressive in pre-season trials, with many familiar faces sprinkled with an

Castlereagh League underway as 2024 season kicks-off with knock-out event

RETURN of Coolah Roos and the loss of Dunedoo Swans are major talking points in the Castlereagh League competition this year. The 2024 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League season will kick-off this Saturday when the Coonabarabran Unicorns host the League Tag and Youth League knockouts.

Being played over two fields with a 10.30am start, the day will feature a combined total of 28 games of both League Tag and rugby league, with the League Tag final set to kick-off at 3.20pm, followed by the Youth League Final.

Castlereagh League chairman, Chris Deighton, said that teams

and local clubs are all keen for the season to get underway for 2024, “As always, our knockouts provide an opportunity for the players and coaching staff of teams to fine-tune their preparations for the season proper after months of putting-in on the training paddock,” Chris said.

“Players will be eager for some game-time under competitive conditions,” he added.

Following the knockouts at Coonabarabran this Saturday, the Coolah Roos, in their comeback year to the Castlereagh League competition, will be hosting the 2024 Senior Rugby League Knockout with the Round One of the competition set-down for the last Saturday in April.

Motocross Champion

Stella Harding is a nineyear-old with a passion for riding fast and having fun. In 2023 Stella – with the support of her family, parents Luke and Kerry and sponsor Dubbo City Motorcycles – participated in motocross races across Australia. With her trusty KTM motorcycles Stella achieved first place in the 2023 Queensland Junior Motocross Female State titles in Mackay, and a strong ninth place in the Darwin Australian Junior Motocross titles.

Stella’s father Luke has been racing for many years so, from two years old, Stella was adamant she wanted to ride as well. From those early training-wheel days to riding competitively as a four-year-old to now competing in Australian title races and competitions, Stella has shown determination and talent to compete to the utmost of her abilities in a male-dominated sport. Stella shares the love of motocross with her cousins, and most weekends find the extended family travelling to race together. In 2024 Stella has her eye on the upcoming NSW titles and, later in the year, the Australian titles in Perth. Good luck, Stella!

Big wet for 2024 season start, leads to Western Premier League postponement

THE much-anticipated 2024 Western Premier League Football competition was expected to start with a bang on Saturday afternoon, but fell victim to the big wet.

RAOWWW! Mighty Mendooran Tigers Reunion, for the mouse that roared!

THE small town of Mendooran’s rugby league Tigers were once described by Rugby League Week legend, the late, great, Ian Heads, as “The mouse that roared.”

into Group 14 against the bigger towns like Coonabarabran, Baradine, Coonamble, Gilgandra, and Dunedoo.

when they downed competition hot-shots, Coonamble by 64-4 in a massacre at Gilgandra.

The double-header featuring Macquarie United, Orana Spurs, Dubbo Bulls, and Parkes Goats matches, will now be rescheduled. This weekend sees Bulls aiming to get their 20th Anniversary celebrations underway with a win over Macquarie United, while Spurs have the bye.

The tag came after the club won three successive Group 14 Premierships from 1983–85 and became the team to beat in the famous regional competition.

Seven teams will compete over 21 rounds following the withdrawal of last season’s runner-up, Barnestoneworth United from Orange.

Success was almost immediate as Alan “Wacka” Bull, who had himself played with Mudgee and Dunedoo, led the Tigers to their first premiership in 1983.

Steve “Bear” Hall came over from Dubbo Macquarie, after forging a reputation at Walgett and Coonamble, the next year while former Coonabarabran half, Graham Suckley completed the trifecta in 1985.

“Bear” recreated that level of excellence two years later when he guided Dubbo CYMS to a 56-nil thrashing of “Lord” Ted Goodwin’s Forbes Magpies in 1986. He wenton to coach Country against City and is remembered as a true legend of league in the bush.

Mendooran had competed over the years in local challenge matches against the likes of Gulargambone, Quambone, and Tooraweenah, before stepping

Good start to new rugby season, Roos win Warren Challenge Cup

DUBBO Kangaroos started the new rugby season with a morale-boosting win at Victoria Park, Warren, on Saturday.

The Roos brought some former Colts with them and unveiled a couple of new players, taking the final 5-0 over the reigning Western Plains premiers, Warren Pumas.

THE SUNDY BOWLER

Chocolate Ducks weighed down by their Easter Eggs

A total of 27 swimmers dived – or fell – into the pool last Sunday for the Veteran’s regular swim.

According to Club Captain Dave Sparkes: “there was an obvious record of the previous week’s festivities” as many broke their times, some by a considerable margin, apparently!

The Central West Northern competition also kicked-off on Saturday with Coolah Kangaroos defeating Yeoval Eagles, 3112, 2023 Premiers Wellington, downing Canowindra by 27-17, while Molong were 75-0 victors over Trangie.

Wellington, while Molong fell 48-0 against the strong Parkes Boars.

The Molong and Yeoval clubs also fielded Women’s teams in the 10-a-side competition with Yeoval winning 56-21 against

The South-West Cup kicks-off this Saturday, while the Blowes Cup and New Holland teams will be in action on Saturday, April 20.

“There were lots of breakers, obviously, the chocolate was ‘loaded’ and timekeepers are taking a close look ahead of this week’s resumption,” he added.

On amore serious note; our annual Presentation Night is next weekend, Saturday, April 20, and speculation as to Club Championship points, have attracted plenty of banter!

“Gentle giant” Bryan gets best win in many a year!

Contributed by ‘PISTOL PETE’

DESPITE the absence of 14 regulars, a very pleasing cohort of 34 bowlers kept the greens full on Sunday.

Bryan O’Sullivan was skip with Frank Armstrong and Paul Martin for one notable match-up. The “gentle giant” then recorded his biggest win for many years, working closely with his team-mates on a perfect post-Easter contest. Ron McCauley, Julie Brown, and Graham Ross, could only watch in awe as Sully’s mob chalked-up 13 shots over the first eight ends and piled on another 16 on the way home.

Paul, Frank, and Bryan were over-the-moon to not only win the game, but be awarded first place for the morning by a fair margin, with their comprehensive 29-6 win from the 13 ends won.

Chris Castlehouse, Cheryl Storch, and Ray Strawhan, found themselves in a good position against Sue Armstrong, John Kennedy, and Ian Humphries after eight ends. They put together 12 shots, including a four and a few doubles, to lead by 10 at the turnaround, before Chris, Cheryl,

and Ray scooped-up a five, but the leaders closed ranks and ended up winning 21-9. Second place!

Sue O’Dea, Vicki Hummel, and Ruby Stockings rolled-up 13 shots in a stirring first eight ends, leaving Sue McCauley, Di Hildebrant, and Kevin Scott mulling a solution. They launched a mini-comeback to win five ends, but that was not enough to stop Ruby’s side from recording a strong win, 18 to 10, 11 ends to five, plus the prize for third place of the morning.

John Zeb, Steve Kelly, and Phil Knight against Mary Perry, Gordon Lummis, with Pete Sinclair,

was expected to be a close one. Each team won four ends but, at the break, Pete’s group led 8-5. They blew it out to six after a quintuplet on 10 and were headed for glory. Mary, Gordon, and Pete finished up 18-10 winners, the five-count proving decisive.

Paul Goodstat, Allan Stratford, and Ros Joseph found themselves rather short over the first eight, Rob, as first time skip, did well with Greg Brown and Mark Morton banking 10 shots by the turn and almost doubled that by 16 to take the game 19-11.

In was a tough Pairs match on

Rink 14, Therese Gaio and Gordon Scott played Helene Emblen and Pete Ruzans.

It was fairly even in the first half with Therese and Gordon ahead. Helene and Pete fought back, adding a few good shots to take the lead by four after eight. It was 10-all in 11. A triple by Helene and Pete pushed them ahead however, and Therese and Gordon set hearts pounding as their bowls threatened an upset, then found their mojo and rolled home Helene and Pete 17 to 11.

High-flying and free motocross show in Dubbo and Wello these school hols

SOMETHING very different is about to hit the central west for these school holidays –and it’s absolutely free.

Freestyle motocross, or “FMX” as it’s known in the industry, is one of the fastest-growing sports (and very expensive) for participants and spectators in Australia.

The desire to ensure country children don’t miss-out on the opportunity to see FMX in action, was the driving force behind a group of community-minded organisations banding together to bring the Aussie FMX show to the communities of the central west.

“My sons used to ride MX from primary school to adulthood,” Narromine Community Skills Project Inc Skill-builder Activities Coordinator, Ann-Louise Stonestreet, said.. It’s an exceptional sport and it has always been a goal of mine to bring something like this to our communities,” she added.

Ann-Louise was particularly keen to make sure the event was free for kids, as many could not afford to see the Nitro Circus when it visited Dubbo.

“After speaking with Aussie FMX Brodie Carmichael, I was impressed with his passion for country kids. He has a team of professional athletes who train all year round to provide an unforgettable experience.

“They perform for small country towns

with a handful of people and in front of thousands in stadiums, and they put everything they have into each show,” Ann-Louise said.

She then went to work garnering support from other nearby communities and potential sponsors to create a mini-tour across the central west.

“We are a small non-government organisation, working in the community for over 40 years.

“Activities are put on through hard work and ingenuity to find the most efficient and effective ways to put events on, depending on outreaching services and grants to make it possible.”

It was here that the genuine regional interest in the idea really grew.

“Surrounding small towns have to do the same.

“I knew kids and families would be captivated by what [the Aussie FMX team] did and offered the opportunity for all these towns to be part of a mini-tour I put together,” Ann-Louise explained.

Interest was strong and the mini-tour was born. The event kicks off in Nyngan next Monday and travels on to Warren, Trangie, Narromine, Wellington, Dubbo, and finishes off in Gilgandra on April 18.

Performers include:

 Brodie Carmichael, a three-time world record holder for front-flip combos, and

the only person in the world to perform a front-flip to a steel ramp,

 FMX champion who landed the world’s first body varial “twist top” manoeuvre in Madrid.

 Tyler Wakeford, an award-winning rider, who has performed at Gap Creek and in Melbourne.

The great thing about the program is that it has an educational element to it.

“The Aussie FMX team know what it’s like to be a kid in the crowd because for most of us that’s where our passion for bikes began,” said team spokesperson and director, Brodie Carmichael.

“We take the time to talk to the kids after the show and the riders are happy to answer questions, pose for photos, sign autographs and allow the kids the opportunity to see the bikes up close,” he added.

He explained that performances highlight a winning combination of exciting tricks,

The show is free to attend and there’s also a free sausage sizzle to follow thanks to the support of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Communities for Children, Narromine Community Skills Project, Narromine Council Sport and Recreation, Orana Support Services, and the NSW Government.

The Aussie FMX show comes to Trangie and Narromine next Tuesday, appearing at the Trangie Showground in the morning and the Noel Powell Ovals in Narromine in the afternoon. Your free tickets can be obtained from 123.Tix and this will help the organisers know how many people to expect and how many to feed!

Dubbo Regional Council is sponsoring the local show on Wednesday, April 17 in the morning at Wellington, and in the afternoon, in Dubbo.
