Australia Day 2022: Dedicated sporting and community members honoured By BROOKE CHANDLER AUSTRALIA DAY is back again. While the usual barbeques and poolside splendour hung in shadow of an ongoing omicron outbreak, the local turnout was appeasing. The sizzle of eggs and bacon at Dundas Park marked the beginning of this year’s events. Narromine Lions Club was responsible for the cook up, with assistance of the Narromine Rotary Club members. Managing a crowd under the current COVID-19 restrictions was a challenge for Narromine Lions Club service director Keith Elrington. “We didn’t know how much food we would need to supply and if we would have enough hands to distribute,” he said. “I am surprised with the turnout seen today.” All formalities of this year’s awards ceremony were conducted by Narromine Australia Day Committee president Les Lambert. ‘Reflect and respect’ was the opening message to all attendees as January 26 recognises the day Captain Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Sydney Cove and proclaimed British sovereignty, in 1788. Mr Lambert acknowledged, “the 200 nations that make Australia today. That is truly remarkable,” he said. Mayor Craig Davies addressed the crowds shortly afterward and spoke of his appreciation of Australia’s resilience. “Drought, floods, and now a pandemic... we, particularly Narromine, have experienced it all.” Kuldip Singh was sworn in as an Australian citizen, watched on by his wife and two young daughters. “This is a new beginning for my family,” Mr Singh told the Nar-

Year Award went to Haleigh McCarney. Mr Lambert acknowledged Ms McCarney as a successful football player, best demonstrated through her selection in the Far West Academy of Sport Women’s Rugby League Program and in the inaugural women’s WSSA rugby league team. When receiving her award, Ms McCarney said her thankfulness had her lost words. The longstanding instructor of Narromine Line Dancing group, Sandy Andrews, was named Senior Sportsperson of the Year. Ms Andrews divides her time amongst many local organisations including, meals on wheels, public speaking days, patient transport, Narromine Book Club
and Narromine Parkrun. “If you can count to eight, then you should come to line dancing classes,” reminded Ms Andrews as she accepted her award. Joy Kirkby was applauded as she was announced as Senior Citizen of the Year. A wife, mother, grandmother and now great-grandmother, Ms Kirkby was recognised as the ‘unofficial grief counsellor’ of Narromine. She regularly visits Timbrebongie House and Narromine hospital residents in addition to her roles at the craft shop, garden club and Singing Australia. Holding back tears, Ms Kirkby said she could not think of a better place to live than Narromine. Continued page 10
