Good Samaritans assist St Mary’s By SHARON BONTHUYS LAST week’s front page story about the senseless vandalism at St Mary’s Anglican Church in Narromine struck a chord with many people. The 89-year-old church was vandalised twice over the Mother’s Day weekend. A toilet was destroyed and a window smashed in the St Mary’s hall, and a vent broken in the foundations of the church building, enabling a hose to be pushed through and left running two nights in a row. Last Thursday, a local Narromine man who does not wish to be identified contacted the Narromine Star and expressed disgust with the vandalism. He then put into motion a plan to replace the smashed toilet for the church. Continued page 2

ON May 12 the Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton, announced that residents of Rawsonville, Dickygundi, Minore and Terramungamine just outside Dubbo will benefit from improved mobile services. The remote border community of Boggabilla in far northern NSW was also a recipient of funding for mobile upgrades under the second round of the Regional Connectivity Program (RCP). With the exception of Boggabilla, all the other communities are a very short drive from the bustling regional centre of Dubbo. Why these communities were singled out for funding when many other rural, regional and remote communities across the central west NSW have greater need for mobile services, is being questioned by other community leaders. “Almost anywhere in NSW and particularly west of the Newell Highway has third world connectivity,” said Narromine Shire Mayor, Cr Craig Davies. “I don’t believe that this government has taken the issue as seriously as it needs to. The Newell Highway taskforce in a letter to Min-

the places that really need it? ister McKenzie highlighted the lack of mobile service for much of the highway and the response spoke of other work being done but indicated the highway was not a priority,” Cr Davies said. “This is the third busiest freight route in Australia. The areas to the west have been almost completely forgotten and even on the very flat Mitchell Highway between Trangie and Narromine, the calls regularly drop out. “Mr Ballhausen’s incident was indicative of the outcomes we can expect in the absence of a reasonable level of service.” Cr Davies was referring to the appalling situation in March when farmer Alex Ballhausen was seriously injured in a fall at his property 60 kilometres from Narromine and was unable to call for help. Mr Ballhausen is still recovering from his ordeal and his injuries. “I realise all of these areas with no coverage can’t be fi xed immediately but

I would have thought this funding could have been distributed across more communities rather than concentrated around a major regional centre that already has good connectivity,” Mr Ballhausen said. “As for my experience, I have been contacted by a customer service specialist from Telstra who is investigating what upgrades are planned for our area.” A spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications told the Narromine Star that under the second round of the RCP, the Government announced $140 million in Commonwealth funding for 93 place-based telecommunications infrastructure projects to improve digital connectivity across regional, rural and remote Australia. “This includes Australian Government funding of $72.4 million for projects through the Connecting Northern Australia Continued page 2
