Terrific Trangie Action Group Christmas street party STORY: PAGE 5 Trangie servo update: what the stakeholders say By SHARON BONTHUYS IT’S looking increasingly unlikely that the temporary fuel operation proposed for Trangie will be available before Christmas, meaning locals will have to continue to travel away to refuel until the matter is resolved. The Narromine Star sought updates on the proposed development from relevant stakeholders. A spokesperson for the Narromine Shire Council has said development approval (DA) for the temporary service station was given last Friday. “As with any DA, a number of conditions of consent are required to be met. Several of these are provided by the land owner,” the spokesperson said. “We understand that Inland Petroleum is working through these conditions and planning is underway to begin construction of the temporary facility. “We will continue to work closely with the proponent, where we can, to bring this temporary fuel supply to Trangie. We are hopeful that this temporary supply will be available soon.” Narromine Shire Mayor, Cr Craig Davies, was fairly scathing about the state legislation that governs developments, a contributing factor in this case. USMC donates vehicle to Eugowra family By SHARON BONTHUYS A FAMILY in Eugowra who lost their disabled access vehicle in the devastating floods last month, and with it their only method of transport for their adult son, have received a replacement vehicle donated by the Narromine United Services Memorial Club (USMC). Recently retired Secretary-Manager Bob Walsh told the Narromine Star that the club had heard about the Tulloch family’s predicament through his daughter, Kim Ryan, from Parkes. Bob raised the matter at a board meeting last month as the USMC just happened to have a vehicle available with wheelchair access that was suitable for the Tulloch family and their son Trent. “The USMC was in the process of trying to sell that particular vehicle when we heard about young Trent losing his vehicle. It was all fitted out with the wheelchair access at the back of it and everything he needed,” Bob said. USMC spokesperson Matt Zell told the Narromine Star that when the Board of Directors became aware of the situation, “they voted unanimously to donate the vehicle to this family in their hour of need.” Following this decision, the club moved swiftly to deliver the vehicle to Eugowra. “My daughter Kim took the vehicle [to Eugowra] and delivered it to the family on No-

The USMC received a letter from Trent Tulloch on December 1, thanking the club for helping him to regain his independence. “I would like to express my deepest gratitude and thanks for the donation of the disa-
bled access vehicle. “This kind donation has allowed me to regain my independence and to be able to continue on with my volunteer work four days a week, family outings and be able to attend medical appointments in Sydney which happens a
few times a year,” wrote Mr Tulloch, who was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy at 18 months of age and has used a wheelchair for his entire life.

Council receives $4 million for water utilities and roads NARROMINE Shire Council is set to embark on a multi-million-dollar scope of works to upgrade the region’s water infrastructure and improve roads, with the support of the NSW Government. Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders announced earlier this week that more than $4 million from round nine of the Resources for Regions Program. “This funding includes $2 million to improve storm water drainage in the Narromine catchment, alleviating local flooding, improving public health and safety and minimising council’s ongoing maintenance costs,” Mr Saunders said. “There’s also over $1.2 million to continue re-sheeting and sealing Newhaven, Farrendale, Belmont, Pineview and Backwater Roads. “We know the region’s roads have been hit hard by continued wet weather for nearly three years now, and these improvements on five key agricultural freight routes will mean safer and more efficient journeys for everyone.” The funding also includes: f $500,000 for Narromine northern zone water pressure booster system (Nymagee Street Reservoir); and
Dugald Saunders (centre) with Narromine Shire Mayor, Cr Craig Davies (left), and Infrastructure and Engineering Services Director, Andre Pretorius. f $250,000 for Tomingley water reticulation and access. Narromine Shire Council Mayor, Cr Craig Davies, said the improvements were essential to keep up with growing demand. “Over the past five years,
Council has experienced a record period of residential and commercial subdivisions and construction activity, with further residential subdivisions to be released on the north-western side of town,” Councillor Davies said.
“This project is critical to maintain the correct pressures and flows within the Nymagee Street Reservoir to future-proof our network. “Meanwhile, renewing Tomingley’s water reticulation pipeline system will ensure a safe and secure drinking water supply not only for the village’s 313 residents, but the increasing interstate highway traffic as well.” Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said Resources for Regions has delivered 355 projects worth $560 million to mining communities since its inception in 2012, stimulating local economies and delivering critical infrastructure. “It’s absolutely crucial we continue to support regional mining towns that supply our State with the resources needed to keep the lights on and the economy moving forward, and this program is just another example of the NSW Government’s commitment to the future of our mining regions,” Mr Toole said. “I would like to congratulate Narromine Shire Council for putting forward these projects, which will make a big difference for the people and organisations in this local community.”

By SHARON BONTHUYS THE month-long “Shop Local” campaign involving businesses across the Narromine Shire ends this week. The Narromine Star understands a large number of businesses from across the shire were registered to participate in the “Shop Local” campaign, which encouraged local residents to spend money locally before going farther afield. Shoppers could win prize vouchers as part of this promotion for spending as little as $20 in a participating business. In Narromine and Trangie, the Narromine Shire Council-led campaign also featured late night shopping experiences as part of its outreach, promoted across various media to locals as well as enticing residents from Dubbo and other communities to shop in the shire. There was late night
shopping in Narromine on December 8, while in Trangie, this was tied in with the popular Trangie Action Group’s Christmas street party held on December 10. The smaller community of Tomingley did not hold a linked evening event during the campaign. In Trangie, the “Shop Local” campaign ran concurrently with a local “Shop ‘n Win” initiative organised by the Trangie Action Group (TAG). This essentially provided locals with the chance to win twice – one in the locally run promotion which concluded on December 9 and one in the shire-wide council-led promotion which ended on December 13. In Tomingley, few businesses participated in the “Shop Local” campaign and some proprietors told the Narromine Star they weren’t aware a promotion was even taking place. After months in the plan-

The Narromine Star spoke to several businesses that said the late night trade had brought more sales than expected. “I’ve done better in the last hour and a half than I have all day,” said Ashleigh McKeown from Archie’s Corner. Sarah Weir’s Cheeky Boots stall joined Rebecca Cullen’s Beautifully You By Becc display inside Ezmay’s Hair Bar. “It’s very busy and there’s a nice vibe going on,” Sarah said. Musician Duncan Ferguson returned to play again in front of Ezmay’s, as he did last year. He described the event as “something different” for him, but just as enjoyable as his other musical activities. The Modern Foodie team were very excited with the

trade that visited their pop-up stall while Norma Reid created her own photo-booth inside the Keirath Shopping Centre to attract trade to her delicatessen. Several businesses took advantage of the opportunity to trade into the night at the Trangie Action Group’s street party on December 10. The Narromine Star team of Tim, Zoe and myself were busy volunteering at the street party, feeding hungry hordes, and unfortunately missed the opportunity to speak with those businesses that stayed open that night. Reports from others attending the street party suggested the late night trade was an excellent addition to the event program at Trangie. Prize draws linked to the “Shop Local” campaign were announced by Narromine Shire Council on December 14.

Trangie Moorambilla students to perform in Sydney
Bridie Hayden is looking forward to this week’s performance.
By SHARON BONTHUYS ANOTHER group of talented singers from the Moorambilla Voices ensemble will perform in Sydney this weekend, including two excited students from Trangie. They’ll be singing for a good cause: raising spirits during the festive season and raising money for flood-impacted western NSW communities. Almost 50 members of the MAXed OUT ensemble featuring high school students will perform at Carols on Norton in Sydney on December 17 and 18. Among them will be Katelyn O’Neill and Bridie Hayden from Trangie. The teens, who are also close friends, are Moorambilla veterans, having participated in the iconic performing arts program every year since year three, except for the shutdown period during the pandemic.
Both are looking forward to performing at Carols on Norton this weekend with their friends in the MAXed Out ensemble, bringing a little Christmas cheer to those attending and ultimately to those impacted by the devastating flooding in rural communities. “This is my third time singing at this event. It’s a fun night and we get to sing Christmas carols and raise money,” Katelyn said. The year 11 Trangie Central School student said she loves participating in Moorambilla Voices’ events because of the friendships she has made and the atmosphere of performing. “I’m very excited about going to Carols on Norton,” said Bridie. the community at a time when Christmas will be difficult for so many in the flood-impacted areas. “Lots of people have suffered this year,” Bridie said. Bridie and Katelyn know many of the performers in the ensemble and are looking forward to singing with them once again. A coach will take the regional students to Sydney for the event which is a collaboration between several organisations including the Leichhardt Espresso Chorus, Inner West Council, and the Country Women’s Association of NSW (CWA). The Carols on Norton artistic director, Michelle Leonard OAM, is also the driving force behind the renowned Moorambilla Voices program. With this long history and connection with children from regional NSW, Ms Leon-

ard has joined forces with the Inner West Council Mayor, Darcy Byrne, to stage the fundraiser for flood-impacted communities. “The Leichhardt Espresso Chorus has a nearly 20-year legacy of singing and making music with the children of regional NSW through the Moorambilla Voices program,” said Ms Leonard. “At this year’s Carols concert, we are supporting high school students from across north-west NSW [to come] to Sydney to once again sing with us. “While we must perform our concert indoors due to the impact of the La Nina weather pattern, we’re only too aware of the devastation that the floods are having in western NSW. “We are proud to offer our city audiences and community the chance to help out by com-
ing along to the concert and offering their donation and support.” Eva Campbell, Chair of the CWA NSW State Cultural Committee, said the organisation was moved by the generosity of the inner west community in supporting the flood disaster relief. The CWA is on the ground offering support to communities impacted by flooding and all the money raised will go directly to families in need, she said. “The people of the inner west of Sydney have always been generous and we’re asking the community to come along to the Carols concert, and support the CWA Disaster Relief Fund by donating,” said Mayor Byrne. “At this time of year, we want to show country NSW that big city people care as well.”

Held in the town’s main street for the fi rst time in many years and in perfect weather conditions, the event was billed as family oriented with ‘something for everyone’. large crowd in attendance. Murphy’s Law was in full play when the suppliers of a number of children’s activities succumbed to the dreaded Covid that caused a last-minute cancellation. Nevertheless, Santa was on the scene and spirits were quickly revived. The year 2022 has been unprecedented in that we have been asked to deal with the aftermath of a four-year drought, a mouse plague, then bushfi res, followed by a massive amount of rain that decimated a number of what looked like record crops and threatened many others. Council’s generosity in funding this event that was de-
signed to boost the local economy and inject some Christmas spirit into the community is much appreciated, as both goals were achieved with great success. Trangie Action Group would like to acknowledge the contribution of local businesses for the donation of raffle prizes. A total of 32 draws saw many people leave with a little surprise or in some cases, a big surprise. The ever-popular chocolate wheel afforded many the opportunity to secure their Christmas ham or prawns, while the talent of Kirby McCutcheon’s Dance Experience provided an entertaining respite.

The Trangie Action Group now takes a break until our next meeting early in the new year. A YEAR after melanoma took the life of her father, Lionel McGuire, Narromine’s own Sally Everett has accepted an invitation to join the board of the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation (ASCF). In her new role, Sally and the other ASCF directors are on a mission to continue to raise awareness about the importance of regular skin checks, and to make those checks affordable and available to the community. The invitation to join the foundation followed a hectic but successful several months this year raising funds for the foundation following dad Lionel’s untimely death in November 2021. “They’re a really fantastic, supportive organisation,” Sally said of the foundation. “We started doing a lot more with them through Mission Melanoma: Doing It For Lionel and they asked me if I would consider joining the board of directors. I was really honoured when they approached me about that.” Sally said the ASCF directors share similar goals, values and passion. “We’ve all been personally affected and we’ve all got the passion to make change.” The ASCF board includes a cancer survivor, and members who have lost a parent to cancer and a friend to melanoma. Sally is one of two board members who have lost a parent to melanoma. Awareness is one of the key messages the foundation would like to spread in the community. “We’re learning more and more about melanoma. Some people don’t have their primary point [of melanoma] diagnosed. They don’t know where in the body it started,” Sally said. In the case of her father, Lionel, his melanoma occurred in the groin area, which is not exposed to sunlight. “He always had ongoing issues with sunspots and [his doctors] think there may have been a really bad one that has gotten into the lymph nodes and spread through there. Once it gets into the lymph nodes it gets a bit scary.” Sally said that another key focus of the foundation is advocating for skin checks to become more affordable and available. At present, the cost of skin checks can vary wildly and the checks are not readily available in rural and remote areas of NSW. “Something we’re advocating for is to make skin checks more affordable and accessible. There’s a lot of feedback and research that shows people aren’t having [skin checks] because they can’t afford them. Essentially there’s no set price and dermatologists can charge whatever they like.” Availability is also a big issue, with only a single skin check clinic in Dubbo for a large geo-
graphical area beyond the town with tens of thousands of people. A mobile service does visit some local communities in the region and staff had commented that they were booked out each visit, she said. This is particularly frustrating to Sally, who draws the comparison between bowel scanning checks, which are free of charge, and the sometimes prohibitive cost of skin checks. The foundation recently hosted a 333-kilometre, ten-day Mission Melanoma walk from Canberra to Government House, spreading the cancer prevention message every step of the way. Sally’s husband, Anthony Everett, and her sister, Carin McGuire, were part of the Mission walkers and walked every day. Sally joined them for the last two days of the walk. Terminally ill woman Hayley Bourke also joined the walk, as did countless others during various stages. “They said it was one of the best things they’ve ever done. The raw emotion and hearing people’s stories, and being part of this massive awareness-creation event is something they’ll never forget.” Sally said one of the things she likes about her new board role is that she lives in a rural area and it is important that rural and remote residents also get these important messages and access to services. “We get these really hot, 46-degree summer days and we need to remember it out here as well.” Sally said that education is another important aspect of their work, taking the sun safety and skin health message into schools and the corporate sector. She said that during the Mission Melanoma walk, the team of walkers went into a number of schools and gave talks to students. She said that it is also important to make businesses more aware of how they can support their employees. Sally said the support from the local community has been incredible this year, and she and her family are extremely grateful. Not only has the family raised funds for the ASCF, but people have also been actively seeking skin checks. With Lionel so adamant that his family should wear hats and sunscreen, Sally reflected that prior to his illness and growing up she was not a fan of doing either. As an adult, she had also let opportunities to have skin checks pass her by. But not any more. “I think he would be very proud that we’re spreading the message now.” Lionel McGuire lives on through the awareness and prevention activities that his family is involved in. “Sometimes telling our story gets quite hard, but it’s nowhere near as hard as a battle with melanoma.”

stroying it and my means of transport. “Your business’s donation to me of the vehicle is something that has changed my life, as I was unsure how I was going to replace the vehicle that was
washed away, therefore losing my independence and means to be able to do the things that are important to me. “So again, I sincerely thank you for gifting me this vehicle and allowing me to live life to
its fullest,” Mr Tulloch wrote. Congratulations to the USMC and all involved in making this donation possible. It really reinforces the ethos of the club which continues to support the wider community

AWA enjoys festive feast By SHARON BONTHUYS THE Narromine branch of the Anglican Women of Australia (AWA) gathered to enjoy a festive feast at St Mary’s Church hall on November 9. Those gathered included AWA members and volunteers assisting the group. They enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by members. Member Bev Shields told the Narromine Star the Christmas party was the last gathering for the year and the group was grateful for the support it had received. The Narromine group started in 1952 and is now 70 years young. Wendy Jeffrey said her late mother, Kath Field, was part of the original group that met many decades ago. Another member, Nona Leeds, was also part of the earlier group.

COULTON’S ULTON’S CATCH TCH UP Comment ment by K COULTON, MARK Federal ral Member for Parkes arkes
Local pensioners can earn more I’M pleased that pensioners across the Parkes electorate will now be able to earn an additional $4000 before their income has an impact on their pension rate. The boost will see the income cap lifted from $7800 to $11,800 for eligible age and veteran pensioners, before their pension is reduced. This change allows pensioners to earn an extra $300 per fortnight before the income test is applied, which will provide some relief ahead of Christmas. It will also help businesses that are desperate to hire reliable and experienced staff.
Have your say on cost of living pressures THE rising cost of living is having a significant impact on household budgets, community groups and businesses across the Parkes electorate. The Coalition has established a Senate Select Committee on the Cost of Living to inquire into and report on the causes of cost of living pressures and how they are impacting Australians, as well as develop sensible solutions to address the issue. I encourage individuals, families and community organisations in the Parkes electorate to make a submission via the Committee’s website.
AROUND UND THE ELECTORATE TORATE Comment nt by D DUGALD SAUNDERS, ERS, State Member ember for Dubbo bo THE Trangie Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) has received $1,000 from the NSW Government to help host its Reconnecting Seniors to Sport event, as part of the 2023 NSW Seniors Festival. The event will be a whole-of-community affair – after enjoying a delicious
SHARING their stories of family separation, living with auditory dyslexia, and coming to terms with being gay, three talented young storytellers from the Parkes electorate were last week named 2023 Heywire winners. Congratulations to Olivia from Gilgandra, Sophie from Broken Hill and Jack who goes to school in Tamworth who were among the 39 winners from across Australia. Well done to each of them for candidly sharing their personal stories, providing a unique insight into what it’s like to grow up in regional Australia. Heywire provides a powerful platform for rural youth to share their stories, ensuring their voices are heard far and wide.
Grants available for local caravan parks CARAVAN parks in the Parkes electorate have just under two weeks left to apply for a share of $10 million to upgrade facilities. Grants are available to assist caravan parks to upgrade or create new infrastructure and facilities to enhance visitor experience, including improvements to accessibility and environmental sustainability practices. For more information or to apply, visit the Grant Connect website.
Time for giving THIS time of year is a great opportunity to give to those less fortunate, so I was pleased to be able to place a gift under the Big W Giving Tree while in Dubbo last week. The Giving Tree initiative aims to support local families in need and spread some Christmas cheer. The Dubbo team has chosen to support the charity Doin It For Rural Aussie Kids. I couldn’t resist buying a John Deere tractor to put under the tree, and hope it brings great joy to a local child this Christmas.

Our seniors were hit hard by the isolation of recent years, and it’s great to be able to support activities that will encourage them to socialise, learn, get active, and demonstrate their skills and knowledge to their peers and the broader community! Trangie servo update: what the stakeholders say The Trangie servo site is now closed off. PHOTO: NARROMINE STAR. From page 1 “THE amount of legislation designed to impede activity and investment should be the fi rst priority of the incoming Government after the March election. Inland Petroleum are doing their best to get this across the line as soon as possible,” Cr Davies said. Representing the asset managers as well as the NSW government, a Transport for NSW spokesperson has said this about what it calls a “property matter. “[The department] is continuing to work with Narromine Shire Council to support the council with its determination for this property matter.
“Transport for NSW is currently waiting for council to upload the referral into the portal in order to provide the necessary documentation to keep the application progressing.” When the Narromine Star recently spoke to Harry Mooring, Business Development and Sales Manager with Inland Petroleum, he reiterated that the company was committed to getting the temporary site operational as soon as practical so that locals and businesses will be able to refuel in Trangie. This is not progressing as quickly as expected. Although not a stakehold-
er, Member for the Dubbo electorate, Dugald Saunders, offered these views on the matter. “It’s vital communities like Trangie have access to essential services, and that includes fuel. “It’s disappointing that continuity of service has not been able to be maintained, however, I have full confidence in the stakeholders involved to resolve the situation, and I am always willing and able to lend any support I can.” The local community would welcome any support to resolve the situation, and fast.

Classroom News Year six farewelled at graduation assembly at NPS Contributed by CLARE MACDONALD GILL NARROMINE Public School (NPS) officially farewelled their year six students at a graduation assembly. The NPS choir performed beautifully and our school community was entertained by a full staff and stage three dance performance. We congratulated our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Bronze, Silver and Brilliant Blue students on a fantastic effort also. All the best to the year six students as they take the next big step in their education.

OUR students and staff are excited to see the new murals installed under the Primary COLA. One features a peaceful scene of tree branches with key words that we aspire to including ‘Belonging, Working together, Helping each other and We don’t give up.’ On the brick building, facing toward the back playground, the murals depict a nature and sustainability theme and include our ongoing projects like the bee garden, our chickens and our vegetable patch. Other panels focus on our rural, farming community. The children were all suitably impressed. The 17th annual Nanga Mai Awards were presented at the Sydney Opera House on November 30. The Education Department website says the “awards celebrate and recognise the outstanding achievements of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander students, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal teachers, other departmental staff, Aboriginal community members and schools that demonstrate excellence across a diversity of areas.” Congratulations to Zalia Terry and Tawhiao Selway on receiving awards this year.

Sport RACING NG REPORT ORT By COLIN HODGES
Cobar Picnic Races – Saturday, December 10 ORIGINALLY from America, Kate Petersen made her debut as a jockey on Saturday and won the opening race at Cobar Picnics on Jawsome for local trainer, Wayne Prisk. Working for Goulburn trainer, Danny Williams, for the past four years as a forewoman, Petersen (aged 29) was offered several mounts at the Cobar meeting by Prisk, with her long journey rewarded when the 10-year-old Jawsome came-up trumps in the 1000-metres Cynend Building And Construction Handicap. Taking prizemoney earnings to more than $100,000 with eight wins and 19 placings from 91 starts, Jawsome (the $2 favourite) travelled in third position before taking control and winning by a length and three-quarters from Rebecca’s Quest (John Wilson at $3) and the early leader, Bizarro (Breanna Bourke at $6). Four-year-old gelding, Celtic Harp has only started 12 times, but has already had three trainers, Chris Waller and John O’Shea in Sydney, and David Vandyke in Queensland, before recently joining the Connie Greig stable at Dubbo. Celtic Harp (John Wilson at $2.80) was a fi rst-up win for Greig coming from last with a strong, wide run to beat Flying Foxy (Emily Waters the $2 favourite) and the early leader, Jester Diva (Ricky Blewitt at $8) in the 1000-metres Nutrien Russell Class One Handicap at Cobar.

Greig also won the $50,000 Picnic Championship with Hemsted earlier this year, and her quest has already started to qualify multiple runners for the 2023 Final. Menindee-trained Budget King set the pace in the 1370-metres QUBE Trophy Handicap, however the fi rst two home were from Greig’s stable – Inzaghi giving Dubbo jockey, John Wilson a winning double when beating Get Up Alby (Breanna Bourke) and the Prisk-trained Equilibrium
(with Kate Petersen). Narromine-based Ricky Blewitt also rode a winning double, with Bella Days and Dutton Ranch. Trained at Forbes by Peter Kirby, Bella Days (the $1.60 favourite) strolled home over seven-lengths clear of More Than Luck (Emily Waters at $3.50) and Rebel Lilly (Kate Petersen at $4) in the 1200-metres Nicholsons At Nymagee Class B Handicap. Visiting trainer, Benno Bowen from Cunnamulla, Queens-
One weekend of competition only LAST weekend, only sufficient players turned up for one competition on the Saturday. Obviously, the crop harvesting, Christmas activities, and a local cricket match, played havoc with the attendance at the weekend golf On Saturday, a good field of 18 players took part in the only weekend competition; a Par Plus event over the 18-holes. This event was won by Tony Mann with a score of Plus 4 with runner-up Mitch Smith on Plus 3. The NTP (nearest-the-pin) on the Third Hole, went to Lewis Hamilton while Tom Hogan won the prize on the 10th with Blake Richardson winning the longdrive on the Fourth. The Jackpot hole was drawn and won by Robert Burns on the Ninth Hole. As mentioned, the Sunday event fell victim to the weekend’s other activities with no players turning-up for the planned event. Next week, the programmed events are: on the Saturday, an
18-hole Stableford and, on Sunday, the event is a “Three-Person Shambles”. Better contact “Bocky” if you want him to explain this match. Business House Comp. The midweek Business House competition attracted a top field of 68 players. This week, the winning team was the “Dozer Chicks” with a score of 23.25. Hopefully, next week, I will be able to give a progress score in the Business House teams competition. This week’s individual winners were Judy Heckendorf with 31; Tony Jeffery on 27; Jamie Roberts on 26; Peta Ferrari on 25, and Mandy Dunbar also on 25. The NTP events were won on Third Hole by Steve Thompson; on the Ninth, by Ross King; on the 10th, by Bill Gibbs; and on the 17th, by Kim Handsaker. The straight-drive winners were John Sevil on the First, and Bill Gibb on the 11th. That’s it for this week – see you all at the 19th!
land, also had wins with Ice Kitten and Dutton Ranch on the day. Ice Kitten (Breanna Bourke at $7) led by five-lengths in the 1200-metres Dean King Constructions Maiden Plate, and lasted to win by a short-neck from Red Card Rosie (Ricky Blewitt at $6). Dubbo-based Sebastian Galea, riding at his fi rst-ever meeting, was a fast-fi nishing third on the $4 chance, Her Call. Jackal (Emily Waters on the
$2.20 favourite) at one time led by six-lengths, but was run-down and beaten by a half-length by Dutton Ranch (Ricky Blewitt at $2.80) with Outback Pat (Breanna Bourke at $4) third in the 1370-metres PJL Class B Handicap.
As was the case on Saturday, the Cobar club has hosted additional pop-up meetings this year to assist the racing industry when other clubs have been forced to abandon meetings due to rain-affected tracks.
Semi-finals held for Consistency Singles IN bowls activities this past week, semi-finals of the Consistency Singles were played on Saturday afternoon with the usual outings of social bowls on Thursday and Sunday to whet the appetite of the bowling fraternity. Firstly to what happened in the consistency singles; in the fi rst match, Ray Anthony’s experience proved the telling factor in his game against Kane Adams; whilst Adam Jermyn and Phil Harding had a ding-dong battle before Adam fi nally prevailed. This means the fi nal is setup nicely this Saturday afternoon, with Ray and Adam playing for the title in which we wish them both good luck. Social Bowls on Thursday, saw Clifton Harris, Kerry Martin, and Bill Wilkie atop the podium at day’s end with Phil Harding, Noel Delboux, and Bob Christoff cashing the runners-up cheque. Sunday’s field wasn’t huge, with just a couple of matches. But that didn’t stop
those in attendance enjoying the hit-out, none more-so than Mark Smith and Henry Buttsworth whose winning efforts over Ross and Bill, was enough to garner them the chocolates. Just a reminder that the ZONE 4 Triples and Fours Championships are being played in early February and, to that end, nomination sheets for all formats/disciplines have been available to members for a couple of weeks now. Narromine will host the Presidents Reserve Format of these two Zone events, and it is expected that we will have some 80–100 bowlers grace our greens over these two weekends. So, if you would like to be a part of the action, please nominate sooner rather than later to avoid missing-out, as spots are limited. Well that’s it for me for another week/ Year. Not sure what’s happening next week, but whatever, I hope to catch-up with you up at the “Bowly”!

Weekly winners were Harding, Richardson
Dale Harding. A NICE, cool morning greeted some 18 hardy golfers taking part in the weekly Gerries Golf Competition at the Narromine course. Eleven men took on the front Nine and, here we saw, Mal Richardson revel in the conditions to win with 27 Stableford points. Terry Willis was a close second on 25 points with Greg Kearines winning the Men’s
Bob Fletcher and Greg Kearines. NTP (nearest-the-pin) and also collecting the NAGA prize for this week with 15 points. Seven ladies battled it out on the back Nine and, here we saw, Dale Harding in top form with 24 points, collecting the major prize. Last week’s winner, Maida O’Mally overcame a handicap reduction to return with 20 points and defeat Michelle Ashdown (also on 20 points) on
a count-back. There was once again no winner of the Ladies NTP with the Ladies NAGA winner Carol McDonald with 15 points. Well done to all the golfi ng winners! Attention then moved to the Pool table where six players battled it out in the weekly competition. The fi rst match was between hot-favourites Chris Harding
and Terry Willis against Greg Kearines and Bob Fletcher. In a big upset, Kearines and Fletcher defeated their more-favoured opponents to advance to the fi nal. Here, they met Alan Kearines and Chris Peter with great rivalry between the father-and-son Kearines, with “Fletch” and (Greg) “Keiro” playing really well to win and take the title of Pool Champs

for the week. This win actually completed a treble for Greg, as he also won the NTP and NAGA in the golf, and then the Pool. All in all, it was a pleasant morning for the Gerries.
