Local hero, Lynda, is a finalist in Aboriginal Woman of the Year By EMILY MIDDLETON A FAMILIAR face in Narromine, and a fi nalist for NSW’s Aboriginal Woman of the Year, proud Wangkumara and Barkandji woman, Lynda Edwards is continuing to make positive waves in her community, and Australia-wide. “I am just so honoured to be able to be in the same category as the other women that have been nominated,” she said. One of six fi nalists, Ms Edwards was nominated for her passion and advocacy around the fi nancial rights and fairness of First Nations people across NSW and Australia. But Narromine may know her as a dedicated volunteer, popping up everywhere she can. “I came to Narromine in 1993 and have been here ever since pretty much,” she said. “I can’t even remember all the things I’ve done in Narromine. It’s just nice to be recognised for everything I’ve done in the community, as well as at a state and national level.”
Inspiring local Indigenous woman, Narromine’s Lynda Edwards, named as a finalist in the NSW Aboriginal Woman of the Year awards. Ms Edwards facilitated many community events including Carols By Candlelight, the Sports Council which raised funds for many children to attend national and international sporting events,
Narromine Gala Nights, she’s the treasurer for Little A’s, was a secretary for the Narromine Basketball association, and so much more in-between. Working from home, Ms Edwards’ current role at the peak
body Financial Counselling Australia, is to support all the capability workers across Australia. She works with them in professional development and training, and sets up a national conference.

“But my other big role is anything fi nancial service in First Nations people, ensuring First Nations people are engaged with in a culturally engaging and culturally safe way.” In this role for the past five years, Ms Edwards loves the work she does. “I actually speak to the banks and some of the utility companies around how they are engaging the service appropriately for First Nations people. In 10 years, there has been so much change, a lot of the places actually have a First Nations phone line now,” she said. Lynda was instrumental in highlighting Telstra’s mis-selling of telco products to First Nations people in remote communities. Deemed unconscionable conduct by the Federal Court, Telstra was ultimately fi ned $50 million in the action brought by the ACCC.

CREATION of a “Cultural Garden” in Narromine has been funded to help understanding of First Nation’s experiences in the district. Narromine Local Aboriginal Land Council recently received $50,000 for creation of the unique facility, so that the Narromine community will have a quiet place to connect to and learn about the region’s Indigenous history. The grant from the NSW Government’s inaugural Community and Place Grants Program is designed to support solutions-focused projects to engage and benefit Aboriginal communities, State Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders said. “This project will transform the former market garden into a culturally significant space, a place
for this space and I can’t wait to see the end result!” The project will also include landscaping and shelter so the space can be used all year round, and the creation of a front showroom to house artefacts and artwork. Narromine Land Council CEO, Sherry Bayliss said she was “elated” to receive the news of the funds saying: “It’s awesome for the community”.

Solar panels and heat pumps Local hero, Lynda, is a for a warmer Aquatic Centre finalist in Aboriginal Woman of the Year From page 1
Making a splash with new heating pumps for Trangie Aquatic Centre, State Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders, with members of the Trangie Amateur Swimming Club. WITH unseasonably mild summers in recent years, new funding has now been provided to warm things up at Trangie Aquatic Centre. Two new grants for Trangie Amateur Swimming Club will see solar panels and heat pumps installed at the popular facility. The money includes $50,000 from the Community Building Partnerships (CBP) program, and $145,657 from the Stronger Country Communities Fund (SCCF), State Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders said. “Water lovers at Trangie aren’t able to take full advantage of the local pool because the water has been too cold,” Mr Saunders said. “That means less time for local children to learn to
swim, train and just have fun, and the elderly and those with a disability have less access to valuable water-based therapies.” With the support of a $15,000 Local Sport Grant, the club has already installed a solar blanket. Stage Two of the project will include the purchase and installation of two 58kw heat pumps, made possible through the CBP program. The SCCF grant will enable the club to install solar panels to offset the cost of running the heat pumps, and support the development of a masterplan for the precinct. Trangie Amateur Swim Club Secretary, Neroli Brennan, said that the upgrades will help more young chil-
dren across the district learn to swim. “We’re hoping this creates that opportunity where we can get kids in at an earlier age and for a longer period of the season, so they’ll be really confident by the time they’re fi nished,” she said. “For our broader community, it’s going to allow us to have some of our elderly participate in sport that’s not so hard on their bodies and allow them to enjoy themselves as well! “The Trangie pool really provides a safe place for people to be physically fit and mix with their community, and I commend the Trangie Amateur Swimming Club on their determination to improve the facility for everyone,” Mr Saunders said.

THIS action was based directly on fi nancial counselling casework headed by Ms Edwards in her role as the Coordinator for Financial Capability with Financial Counselling Australia, and as the facilitator for The First Nations Network where many of the case studies for the mis-selling originated. “It’s always asked of me where does this drive come from, and I always talk about how fi nances have only really been in the First Nations communities and societies since we were colonised,” said Ms Edwards. “In majority of First Nations communities, money has only been around for three to four generations, and are expected to catch up in a short time. My grandfather as an example was only paid in rations, and after the war when people were given parcels of land, First Nations people weren’t allowed that. “So I am really mindful when I speak to fi nancial services to say the expectation you have from the general community isn’t applicable to First Nations people, we are behind the eight ball as we haven’t had this in our society.” As written in her submission piece for the award, Lynda’s work, both paid and volun-
ON I CT U A
tary, has been fi red by a genuine sense of purpose and a desire to achieve better, fairer fi nancial outcomes for First Nations people who are too often the target of unfair dealings. “Her deft and gentle mentoring of fi nancial capability and literacy workers has had a potent multiplier effect that has improved thousands of people’s lives and livelihoods throughout Australia. This work has equipped her to provide vital advice in the development of Reconciliation Action Plans across many organisations, always with a lens on what is best for First Nations customers and consumers,” Ms Edwards submission read. Humbled by her nomination, and further by making the finalist list, Ms Edwards wanted to dedicate the award to all the people she has worked with. “The work I do isn’t possible without people on the ground. I had a lot of support from the Narromine community, and without those organisations, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.” Ms Edward’s stands along other fi nalists Natalie Ahmat, Debbie Barwick, Dr Jodie Edwards, Kirsty Hargraves, and Noami Moran.

Geyer and Wendell grace Rams dinner TRANGIE RLFC held its much-anticipated Sportsman’s Dinner last Saturday night with radio presenter, Triples M’s Anthony Maroon the host with former rugby league internationals, Mark Geyer and Wendell Sailor also in attendance. The night was a huge success with more than 200 people coming from as far away as Orange and Wagga Wagga. To begin the night, Eugowra’s “Eat Your Greens” dished-up a magnificent two-course meal that kept all in attendance raving at how amazing it was. Later, the guests took the stage and shared some stories that included local Wayde Day as well as Narromine legend, Glenny Wallace. Many great laughs, stories, and the occasional tear, made the night one to remember. To fi nish of the evening, an auction took place with some amazing items including a Shane Warne-signed cricket ball, a Tyson Fury-signed boxing glove, a 2022 Australian-signed World Cup jersey, a 2022 Penrith Panthers-signed jersey, with all monies being donated to Trangie’s local schools. Trangie Rams RLFC thanked all that attended, including the representation of the Narromine Jets RLFC the Orange United Warriors RLFC. “The Rams Committee would like to thank everyone that helped make the night successful, including those that set-up the hall, those that worked tirelessly with bits and pieces over the past few months, our special guests and, most importantly all those that attended that made it the night it was,” a Club spokesperson said. “The Rams would love nothing more than to have more of these kind of events in the future,” he added.

MORE than $3 million was recently set-aside for urgent repairs to 1676km of Council-owned roads in Narromine Shire The money is for getting local roads back up to a safe, useable standard and repairing the widespread damage from last year’s flooding rains, State Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders said. Councils across Dubbo electorate will receive more than $12 million to fi x the potholes on local roads as part of the NSW Government’s $500 million Regional and Local Roads Repair Program, he added. “Driving around the region, whether it’s Trangie in the west or Gulgong in the east, we’ve all seen just how bad the potholes have become,” Mr Saunders said. “The $500 million Region-
al and Local Roads Repair Program to fi x the potholes on council roads right across the State – this is about fi xing the roads you use every day,” he added. Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Sam Farraway said the injection of funds means councils can plan and undertake work now to restore roads and help protect against reoccurring problems. “We managed to secure an additional $280 million for regional councils. We also provided cash advances for emergency disaster funding to eligible councils and have diverted Transport for NSW road crews to help fi x local roads,” Mr Farraway said. “I encourage councils to get the deeds signed quickly so that funding for your local and regional roads gets to you sooner for essential repairs to get underway,” he added.

Call for LRCI funding details to be released I’M calling on the Labor government to release the funding details for the next phase of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program, to provide certainty to local councils as they plan their capital works budgets for the year. When I was the minister for local government, I helped implement the LRCI program in 2020 as a stimulus for local economies during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has proven to be one of the most beneficial programs for local councils and when I travel throughout the Parkes electorate, I can see the direct and indirect benefits the LRCI program has brought to our communities. I was pleased when Labor committed an additional $250 million (on top of the $500 million previously budgeted by the former coalition government) in the 2022-23 October Budget. However, local councils are still waiting to fi nd out the amount of funding they can expect to receive, and the conditions attached to it, under phase four. This is making it very difficult for our councils to plan their capital works budgets for the year ahead. Our councils will be even

I call on the Labor government to write to every council advising exactly what funding they will receive from the LRCI program to enable councillors and staff to get on with the job.
Heavy vehicle safety grants on offer THERE are only a few weeks left for those in the heavy vehicle industry to apply for crucial project funding through
Nations people, school groups, tourists, and the whole community to visit and reflect. The garden will include traditional bush tucker and medicinal plants, with signage recognising the history of the people who have lived on this Country for millennia. I commend the Narromine LALC on its vision for this space, and I can’t wait to see the end result! the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI). Approximately $4 million is available under round eight of the HVSI to support industry-led projects that address an existing issue for the transport and logistics sector and all road users. I encourage councils, industry and community groups in the Parkes electorate with a tangible project idea to apply for this funding to help keep heavy vehicles moving safely and efficiently. er the fi rst stage of its masterplan for the Trangie Sporting Precinct – the project will upgrade the existing tennis, netball, multi-purpose bitumen and grass courts to synthetic material. The upgrades will help clubs attract more players and competitions and allow them to secure more school holiday activities and coaching clinics for players young and old! Council has also received $195,305 to extend footpath infrastructure in Trangie and Narromine, and $126,633 to improve accessibility and upgrade the public toilet at Dundas Park. The Trangie pedestrian project will provide connectivity to Trangie MPS whilst the Narromine project will provide connectivity for residents
Assistance for tertiary students WITH many young people in the electorate about to head off to university, I thought it was timely to highlight the financial assistance available to those who wish to further their studies. The costs associated with attending tertiary education in another town or city is often the biggest barrier for students from our regional, rural and remote areas. The former coalition government recognised this and implemented a number of improvements to eligibility criteria to ensure more
and school aged children to retail precinct, sporting and recreation and education areas. The Stronger Country Communities Fund has delivered over 2000 grassroots projects over the last 5 years, and we know it’s often the little things that make a big difference to our lives here in the bush. I particularly commend the Council on its commitment to improving accessibility across the shire, so everyone can live, work, play and thrive in the region. NARROMINE Shire Council has received $3,056,154 from the NSW Government’s $500 million Regional and Local Roads Repair Program to repair 1,676km of coun-

students from regional Australia could access tertiary education without having to face the fi nancial barrier. A range of assistance is available to students including Youth Allowance for students and Australian Apprentices, Austudy, ABSTUDY, the Student Start-up Loan, the Tertiary Assistance Payment and the Relocation Scholarship. Eligibility criteria for each of these payments varies, so it is important to contact Services Australia before starting a claim. We’ve all seen just how bad the potholes have become around the region.
That’s why the NSW Nationals announced the $500 million Regional and Local Roads Repair Program to fi x the potholes on council roads right across the state. This is about fi xing the roads you use every day.
This builds on the $4,710,000 in block grant funding delivered by this government to Narromine Shire Council since 2019, and the more than $2 million delivered through grant programs, such as Fixing Local Roads Pothole Repair Round, and Fixing Country Roads. Until next time, Dugald

Minecraft fun with top-line “Mentor” at Library event BELOVED for its innocent sense of creative fun, local Minecraft enthusiasts had the unique opportunity to work with a real games’ expert at Narromine Library during the recent school holidays. More than a dozen local kids were invited to get down and get creative by building and playing the worldwide phenomena with certified “Global Minecraft Mentor”, Noelene Callaghan from the organisation, World of Minecraft. As these images of Ms Callaghan and the participants show, it was a great chance to really get their teeth into the computer game that is whimsical, informative, and educational, all at the same time.

Golden Perch and Murray Cod fingerling release aids Macquarie River ecosystem RESTORING native fish stocks is a vital component in maintaining a balanced river ecosystem, with release of about 12,000 native fi ngerlings recently taking place at various locations on the Macquarie River at Narromine. The initiative is part of the “Dollar-for-Dollar Native Fish Stocking Program” being funded by Narromine Shire Council, the Macquarie Cotton Growers Association, and the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI). Council has been involved with this restocking program for nearly a quarter of a century with hundreds of thousands of young fish released in that time, Narromine Shire General Manager, Jane Redden said. “Council has participated in the restocking program for over 24 years and 210,000 native fi n-
gerlings have been released during this time,” Mrs Redden said. Today, we released Golden Perch and Murray Cod,” she added. As it takes an estimated three– four years for the fi ngerlings to reach maturity, Council and the Macquarie Cotton Growers Association, view the program as a long-term strategy in working towards maintaining a balanced river ecosystem “It really is important to maintain fish numbers and improve our threatened freshwater species,” Mrs Redden explained. “NSW DPI’s ‘Dollar-for-Dollar Native Fish Stocking Program’ is recognised for its significance in terms of improving future conservation and recreational fishing outcomes in the Macquarie River,” she concluded.
All ready for the big release of about 12,000 fingerlings into the Macquarie River, Narromine Shire Council’s Manager for Health Building & Environmental Services, James Cleasby; local landholder, Robert Webb; Narromine Shire Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dawn Collins; Council’s Landcare Co-ordinator, Craig Bennett; and OzFish Project Manager, Bron Powell.
New media fund helps country publishers with emerging opportunities up to a maximum of three projects per applicant.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, Paul Toole, said the funding is set to bring to life projects to help regional media outlets tell stories in new ways and ensure regional communities have access to trusted news sources covering the stories that matter to them.
“We know how important it is for people in rural and regional NSW to have access to the news and information they need, about the issues that affect them,” Mr Toole said.
“In rapidly changing times, the NSW Government is committed to ensuring that our regionally-focused media and news gathering organisations continue to serve their communities well into the future.
“That’s why we’re investing $3 million to help these news outlets drive innovation, tell stories in new ways and provide more people in regional NSW with access to the news that matters to them. HELPING smaller country and rural publishers survive in the new media environment is the aim of a new recently-launched $3 million Regional Media Fund. Independent country newspaper publishers have welcomed the funding which they believe will help them continue to share local stories on new and emerging platforms, according to the president of Country Press NSW Lucie Peart. “We have been working with the Deputy Premier and members of the cabinet throughout 2022 to develop a greater understanding of the important role independent publishers play in their communities,” Mrs Peart said. “We are grateful to the Deputy Premier and the NSW Government for their commitment to establish this dialogue with our organisation.” Independent publishers are also keen to explore other digital mediums such as podcasting and social media, with the Regional Media Fund kick-starting projects by giving publishers the fi nancial backing to create potential new revenue streams, she said. “While our readerships across the state still greatly value their print edition newspapers, there is a growing demand to access news online,”

Big win for Turgenev connections in Tooraweenah Cup
RACING NG REPORT ORT By COLIN HODGES
Tooraweenah Cup, Saturday, February 4 Locally-trained and owned horse Turgenev was a popular winner of the feature event, the 1550-metres Mountain View Hotel Tooraweenah Cup, on Saturday at Gilgandra. Raced by a big syndicate, including Gilgandra Jockey Club president, Jason Tate, and trained at the track by Kieren Hazelton, Turgenev had, earlier at the New Year’s Eve meeting, been part of a winning treble for Hazelton and Sydney-based jockey, Andrew Banks.
Another great ride by Banks in this event, saw Turgenev (in from $3.60 to $2.70) get away quickly from an outside barrier, to trail behind then leader, Blue Channel. In the straight, Turgenev then shot-away to win by over four lengths from Northern Borders (Zara Lewis at $91) and Blue Channel (Shayleigh Ingelse at $5.50). During a good day for Gilgandra trainers, Bryan Dixon also won the 1000-metres Rohr’s Home Timber and Hardware Benchmark 50 Handicap, with his rank-outsider, Stryke ‘Em Onesie, ridden by the stable apprentice, Zara Lewis. Official starting price for Stryke ‘Em Onesie, was $61, however, the TAB dividend paid $83, and the TAB Fixed Odds, $101! Leading for home by a slen-
der margin, Stryke ‘Em Onesie, held on gamely to win by a neck from Byzantium (Shayleigh Ingelse at $7) and the fast-fi nishing Starlink (Tony Cavallo at $3.70). Newcastle trainer, Andrew MacDonald, who had previously won at Gilgandra in 2022 with Midas Star, enjoyed his return visit on Saturday to land a winning double with Emerald Reach and Jumping Power Two, both being ridden by Clayton Gallagher. Settling-in fi fth in the 1000-metres Aquawest Maiden Handicap, Emerald Reach (in from $6.50 to $5.50), hit the lead in the straight to win by a length from Charge Away (Serg Lisnyy at $4.60) and London Tycoon (Tony Cavallo, the $1.90 favourite). Three-year-old gelding, Jumping Power Two, also produced a good perfor-
Wins for O’Mally and Masling Contributed by NORM LEWIS LAST Saturday’s cool weather attracted a strong field of 25 golfers for the weekly Gerries Golf competition. In the Ladies Division played on the back nine, there were 10 competitors with winner on the day that “Grand Lady of Golf”, Maida O’Mally, with a great round scoring 25 points. Runner-up was Carol McCalam on 21 with great golf from both ladies! Rumour has it, that our winner will be celebrating her 95th birthday on the day this paper is published, and we all wish her a very happy birthday, and I am sure the handicapper will allocate her a birthday present of a new handicap. Well done to both ladies on some great golf. Gail White also collected the jackpot of four golf balls, with a great shot on the ladies nearest-the-pin (NTP) hole. The NAGA prize for the ladies went to Vicki Gainsford.
The men’s comp attracted 15 players on the front nine and, here we saw very good scores of 18 points by two players, Brian Masling and Jamie Roberts. Both these golfers recorded four pointers on a couple of holes. The count-back was again called on to decide the winner – Masling. The handicapper was not in attendance, but I am sure he will have some fun reducing the handicaps of these players. There was no winner of the men’s NTP, but Mal McIntyre was lucky enough to win the NAGA for the week. Oh, how the mighty have fallen – a winner one week, and NAGA the next! Once again there was no weekly pool competition due to insufficient numbers, The organiser was sadly missed. Next Saturday, the ladies will play the front nine with the men on the back. See you all on the tee at the usual hit-off time of 9.30am.
mance when carrying the 60.5kg top-weight, by coming from an outside barrier to win the 800-metres Geronimo Farm Equipment Class One Handicap. Jumping Power Two (the $1.60 to $1.40 favourite) had raced outside the leader and, responding to powerful riding from Gallagher, won by a short-head from So Extra (Serg Lisnyy at $5) with over two lengths to Mr Bobcat (Will Stanley at $14). With an apparent dislike for rain-affected tracks, the nine-year-old gelding, Sons Of Bourke when running on a good racing surface at Gilgandra, returned to form in winning the 1280-metres Freck’s Electrical And Solar Benchmark 50 Handicap. Well-ridden by Wellington-based apprentice, Dylan Stanley, Sons Of Bourke (at
$13), came from midfield to beat Valadyium (Ken Dunbar at $17) and Punkzy (Andrew Banks at $21). Owned by Mark Spencer, Kurt Dickson, Frank Hollman, and Glen Knight – all from Bourke – and now trained at Nyngan by Rodney Robb, Sons Of Bourke has recorded eight wins and 18 placings from 69 starts with an accumulated $185,000 in prize-money. Dubbo trainer Michael Mulholland and Wyong jockey Serg Lisnyy, who are proving a successful combination, won the 1280-metres Bendigo Bank Maiden Plate with Rubiland. Finishing fast from near the tail of the 12-horse field, Rubiland (at $5) arrived home just in time to beat Cherry Blue (Tony Cavallo at $5.50) and Outside Edge (James Rogers at $16).
Battle for business house supremacy Contributed by NORM LEWIS A TOTAL of five teams are in the battle for supremacy in the Narromine Golf Club Business House competition with only five weeks remaining in this popular event for 2022/23. After last week, there are three teams leading by one point – they are team NDT, team Dozer Chicks, and team Gerries, which are all on 42 points. One point behind are team Deep Divots and team Epiroc both on 41 points. It will be interesting to follow the leadership battle over the next five weeks, to see who comes out on top. Last Wednesday, 78 players participated in tis comp with the winning team on the day, being AGMART with a score of 22. The five best individual scores on the day went to Roz Reynolds, 27; Vicki Gainsford, 23; Stu Crawford, 23; John Savel, 23; and Viv Wright, 22. The nearest-the-pin (NTP) winners were, on the third Greg Barling; on the ninth, Dan Coen; the 10th, George Mack; and on the 17th, M McPherson. The long drives went to Greg Barling on the fourth and Viv Wright on the 11th. An interesting battle to see who the best team over the next five weeks it will be! On the weekend, some 12 players hit-off in the 18-Hole Individual Stableford event on Saturday. Jason McPherson won with 36 points from Mal McIntyre on 35.
McPherson won the NTP on the ninth and completed the day by winning the Long Drive the 15th. There was no winner of the jackpot prize. Sunday saw 16 players on the course for the 4BBB competition. Here, the Brown brothers Matt and Luke cleaned-up with a score of 44 points. Runner-ups were Mal McIntyre and Rob Gainsford on 42. The NTP on the third went to Henry Buttsworth and, on the 10th, to Craig Duff. The long drive on the 11th went to Mitch Smith, but there was no winner of the jackpot prize on the day. Next weekend, the competitions are as per the programme, Saturday is an 18-hole Par plus event and, on Sunday, a Two-Person Irish competition. During the week the Club AGM was held, and the following were elected to run the Club for the ensuring year: President Matt Gainsford; Vice President Jason McPherson; Secretary Steve Buckley and Committee Alex Sambrook, Mitch Smith, Rob Burns, Henry Buttsworth, Doug Potter, and Peter Gainsford. Unfortunately, no nominations were received for the Captain and Vice-Captain positions, and it was decided that Alex Sambrook and Mitch Smith will act in these until the matter is finalised at the fi rst committee meeting. That’s all for this week – we’ll see you all at the 19th!
